Census unlikely anytime soon

NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): The decennial census, supposed to be held in 2020-21 but postponed due to the Covid pandemic, will not be held anytime soon. Centre has directed States not to alter the boundaries of the districts and other civil and police units till June 2022 -- a mandatory requirement three months prior to the country's biggest enumeration exercise. With the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic looming large, Union Home Ministry officials said so far, no decision has been taken on when to conduct the census and then update the National Population Register (NPR). The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India has conveyed to the states that the central government has put a ban on the alteration of boundaries of districts, sub-divisions, taluks, police stations, etc. till June 2022, an official from the Home Ministry said. Ban on alteration of

boundaries of administrative and police units, at least three months prior, is mandatory for conducting the census operations. Since the boundaries of the administrative and police units have been freezed till June 2022, there is no question of launching the census operations before October, the official said. The central government had first ordered freezing of the boundaries of the administrative units from January 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021. Subsequently, after the outbreak of the pandemic, it was extended till December 31, 2020. The ban on alteration of the administrative boundaries was again extended till December 31, 2021 and now till June 30, 2022.

The total number of districts in the country in 2011, when the last census was conducted, was around 640. India now has about 100 more districts. The number of statutory towns stands at 4,657 -- up from 4,041 in 2011 and the number of census towns is 5,050 -- up from 3,892 in 2011. However, the number of villages has gone down from 6,40,934 in 2011 to 6,39,083 now. The housing listing phase of the Census and the exercise to update the NPR were scheduled to be carried out across the country from April 1 to September 30, 2020 but postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. According to the earlier schedule, the census would have its reference

date as March 1, 2021 and the snow-bound Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, it would have been October 1, 2020. In March 2020, when the Covid lockdown was announced, the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India was all set for the first phase of the census and updation of the NPR that was scheduled to begin from April 1, 2020. Even though some state governments opposed the NPR update, all offered full support to the census exercise. While the census exercise was estimated to cost Rs 8,700 crore, the Union Cabinet had approved Rs 3,941.35 crore for the NPR exercise. The census is the largest single source of a variety of statistical information on different characteristics of the people of India. With a history of more than 130 years, this reliable, time tested exercise has been bringing out a veritable wealth of statistics every 10 years.

OSU dismayed at PM’s silence on December 4 & 5 killings

WYH supports Shamator district demand DIMAPUR, JAN 3 (NPN): Western Yimkhiung Hoho (WYH) has appealed to the state government for the early declaration of Shamator ADC Hq to a full-fledged district. WYH said this was for the upliftment and overall development and also for administrative convenience of the Shamator sub-division and the entire administrative circle that comes under the proposed Shamator district. WYH pointed out that Yimkhiung tribe, an indigenous tribe of Nagaland, was the only tribe devoid of a district and the community deserved to have a district of its own in tandem with other recognized tribes of Nagaland “after asserting the genuine land demarcation claim of the parties.” The hoho lauded the decision of the chief minister and the cabinet for declaring Shamator district “in principle” towards the Yimkhiung tribe.

DIMAPUR, JAN 3 (NPN): Oting Students’ Union (OSU) has expressed dismay at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence over the killing of 14 innocent Konyak civilians on December 4 and 5, 2021. W h i l e c o nv e y i n g condolences to bereaved families of the 12 killed in stampede at Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu & Kashmir on behalf of the Oting victims’ family members, the union asked why the Prime Minister was so adamant or reluctant to issue a simple sympathy and condolence message when 14 innocent Konyak youth were massacred. In a press release, OSU president Keatwang Konyak wondered whether India was not a secular State and whether Konyaks were not Indian citizens in the eyes of Modi. OSU said few words of solace from the Prime Minister’s mouth would have comforted them a lot.

Referring to Indian Army’s court of inquiry team’s visit to ground zero Yatong on December 29, 2021 and Tizit on the subsequent day, OSU said when the victims’ families were hoping for justice and placed all hopes on the ongoing investigation, they were shocked at the locals being tagged as non-cooperative. The union asserted that no official intimation was given to OSU except a request by superintendent of police (SP) Mon seeking permission for the army enquiry team’s visit to ground zero only. Accordingly, OSU said the Konyak civil society organisations (CSOs) had granted permission in spite of their “non-cooperation” against the Indian armed forces in order to pave the way for the inquiry team to visit the site and find the actual truth, on condition that they should visit without arms or uniform. OSU said the people of Oting had

DIMAPUR, JAN 3 (NPN): ACAUT Nagaland has made a clarion call on all Nagas to let the New Year 2022 be a harbinger for Nagaland “to stomp our feet together and declare- enough is enough of everything that is rotting in Nagaland”. Satya Pal Malik (File)

NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (AGENCIES): Union Home Minister Amit Shah meant no disrespect to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik clarified Monday afternoon to NDTV hours after a videothat shows him making contradictory remarks- went viral, and the opposition parties latched on to his comments. Malik has been a vehement critic of the BJP over

farmers’ issues. On Monday, a video that shows him talking about his recent meeting with Modi was widely shared on social media. “When I recently went to meet the Prime Minister over the farmers’ issues, I picked up a fight within five minutes... I told him 500 people have died... He asked‘Have they died for me?’” “I told him yes, since you are the king. Anyway, I ended up having a fight with him. He told me to meet Amit Shah and so I did,” he is heard saying in the clip. Congress MP Mallikarjun Kharge tweeted the video with scathing comments: “Meghalaya’s Governor Sri Satya Pal Malik is on record saying PM was ‘arrogant’ on the issue of Farmers & HM Amit Shah called the PM as ‘mad’. infections in the country... I must also say something more important and that is that around the major metro cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and particularly Delhi, it is over 75% of all the isolates now,” said Dr Arora. “India is clearly in the third wave. The whole wave seems to be driven by a new variant and today it is Omicron,” Dr NK Arora said, adding this is supported by evidence from the last fourfive days that saw “galloping increase in the number of cases”. It also reminded that by August 2022, the cease fire signed with NSCN(IM) will be 25 years old and as the longest ever running cease fire in the world, merits jubilation and analysis. 3rd wave on, 75% cases in metros are Omicron: Covid Task Force chief NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (AGENCIES): A large chunk of Omicron cases in India as the country faces a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic have been reported from big cities, the head of the country's vaccine task force told NDTV on Monday, adding the third wave of the pandemic is very much here. ACAUT also reminded that contrary to views of Naga CSOs which had demanded solution before election in 2018, the BJP incharge of North East Ram Madhav declared “Election for Solution” in order to justify holding of assembly elections. ACAUT also lauded the coming together of all legislators under United Democratic Alliance (UDA)

complied with the request with utmost respect in spite of the pain that had been inflicted upon them. However, OSU said they came to learn that the investigation team had reportedly refused to talk or listen to other witnesses available at ground zero. The union said the team only interacted and recorded the statement of BJP Mon district president Nyawang Konyak and Lenwang Konyak, CHM, on December 29, 2021. Demands clarification: Refuting a news filed by Press Trust of India (PTI) on December 30, 2021 that the locals had refused to cooperate with the inquiry team, OSU termed it as totally fictitious distorting the truth. OSU said such “malicious venom” was nothing but a bid to make the aspirations of victims’ family members for a justice a distant dream.

DVC against move to bifurcate village DIMAPUR, JAN 3 (NPN): Darogapathar Village Council in its emergency meeting held on December 29, 2021 resolved that any move to bifurcate the village along the Nagarjan By-pass from 3rd Mile area (NH 29) would be opposed, maintain the integrity of village boundary and not let formation of the new district/s affect it. Mentioning this in a memorandum to chief secretary J Alam, council’s chairman K Ado Bizo and secretary I Jamir, and head GB Yashimeren Ao said the meeting resolved by majority vote to continue under the same administrative circle (Seithekema/ Chümoukedima, EAC Circle) and preferably under the new district of Chümoukedima. They said the meeting felt that creation of new districts, especially Dimapur and Chümoukedima, could lead to bifurcation of the village, it being in the boundary of the two districts. For reference, they pointed out that Da-

rogapathar village was located in the eastern region of erstwhile Dimapur district with Naharbari village in north, Thilixu and Chekiye villages in south, Phaipijang village in west and Padumpukhri village, Aoyimti village, ARTC/airport along NH 29 in east. Claiming that Darogapathar, established in 1811, was one of the oldest villages in the plains of Dimapur, they said ever since the formation of Dimapur district, the village has been directly under the administrative control of EAC Seithekema/Chümoukedima circle. Alleging that Darogapathar village nomenclature had been misrepresented by GB Union, East Dimapur without their knowledge, they clarified that the GBs of Darogapathar village had always been under the umbrella of GB Union, Chümoukedima circle. In this regard, the council sought rectification and positive implementation of the memorandum.

NPC anguished over extension of AFSPA

DIMAPUR: Expressed unhappiness over government of India’s decision to continue Armed Force Special Power Act (AFSPA) for another six months, Nagaland Peace Centre (NPC) said that the enactment of this military act was a direct threat to peace; a violation to the Right to Life and depriving its citizens of their Constitutional Rights. In a press note, NPC chairman Pedi Miacheo reminded that it had earlier written to the President of India-- who is also the constitutional head of the country, to lift AFSPA and Disturbed Area Act from The first phase of Shamator district demand organized by Yimkhiung Tribal Council Nagaland. that enforcing Armed Force Special Power Act was a not only a threat to peace and security of the people, but also deprived citizenship rights. It also mentioned that the Government of India has breached all three ceasefire agreements (1964, 1975 and 1997) made between the Centre and the Nagas by introducing Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Nagaland. It also mentioned that Nagas had been waiting for peaceful and amicable settlement of the political issues. Nagaland Peace Centre said it was displeased with the Government of India for labelling Nagaland as still

‘disturbed and dangerous’ and at the same time the inhabitants of Nagaland were being terrorized by the act for many years now. “The extension of Armed Force Special Power Act shows the ill motive of the Government of India, whose only reason is to suppress the Naga people,” Nagaland Peace Centre stated. Meanwhile, Nagaland Peace Centre has urged Nagas in general and the Konyaks in particular, to not resort to violence but act wisely so that peace and security was maintained in the land, adding that the NPC would continue to stand on its principle of non-violence.

Plea against ILP: SC notice to Centre, Mnp

NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (IANS): Supreme Court on Monday sought response from the Centre and the Manipur government on a plea questioning validity of Inner Line Permit (ILP), which restricts entry of non-indigenous people into the state. The petition, filed by organisation Amra Bangalee, argued that system was draconian, and fundamentally opposes policies of social integration, development, and technological advancement in the area outside the Inner Line.

It further argued that ILP hampers tourism within the state, which is a major source of revenue generation for these areas. After hearing the plea, a bench of Justices Abdul Nazeer and Krishna Murari sought a response from the Union and Manipur government. The petition said: “The effect of ILP system in the state of Manipur is that no person who is not a resident of the said state is permitted to enter the state or engage in business there without applying for a special per-

mit known as Inner Line Permit.” It contended that the system violated fundamental rights of citizens guaranteed under the Constitution, while granting unqualified power to the state government to restrict the entry and exit of non-indigenous persons. The plea contended that permit system was introduced by way of the Adaptation of Laws (Amendment) Order, 2019 (2019 order) which extends 140-yearold “colonial legislation” Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations, 1873 (BEFR), which was enacted by the British to create monopoly over the tea plantations in Assam. The plea further added that by virtue of the 2019 order, the ILP system has effectively been made applicable to Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, and districts of Nagaland, which are notified from time to time.

Agartala airport (File) AG A RTA L A , J A N 3 (AGENCIES): The opposition CPI-M in Tripura on January 3 demanded that the Centre reverse its decision to give over the operation of the Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala to the Adani group and declare it as an international airport, a day before the formal opening of the new terminal of the airport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Manik Dey, a former transport minister and senior CPI-M leader, said that the new terminal was

the result of the previous Left Front government’s spending Rs 35 crore from the state budget to rehabilitate 78 families in order to provide land for the expansion of the airport and the construction of a modern terminal. “The Ministry of Civil Aviation had been persuading to run the air publicprivate partnership but we didn’t agree because we didn’t want to privatise the most precious public property to any private group. The Left Front government had paid compensation of

Several BJP, CPM MLAs in touch to join Trinamool in Tripura: Abhishek AG A RTA L A , J A N 3 (AGENCIES): Several MLAs, belonging to the ruling BJP and Opposition CPI(M), are in touch with his party leaders and keen to join it, claimed Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, The Indian Express report stated. However, he said his party would choose members based on their commitment to serve unconditionally for TMC. A full-fledged state committee of the party is expected to be announced by February 10. Banerjee, who is touring Tripura to take stock of the party organisation, said his is the only political party capable of giving a proper fight to the BJP and said anyone from any political party desiring to fight BJP should join the Trinamool Congress in Tripura. “There are many elected representatives, many MLAs from BJP, even CPIM who are contacting us. Our message is clear – people should join TMC unconditionally and actively work for the people out in

Abhishek Banerjee the field,” Banerjee said. Asked if certain rebel MLAs in BJP’s Tripura chapter, who were recently critical of the leadership of CM Biplab Kumar Deb, would be joining his party, the Trinamool leader said the entry of leaders would continue throughout the next several months. Banerjee also said he visited several party workers’ homes during his visit and felt families of political workers are not given respite in political violence in the last few months in Tripura. In the national scenario, Banerjee said his party

is working to give a tough battle to BJP. However, he denied allegations that TMC’s recent political maneuvering could potentially harm Congress prospects and make way for the return of BJP to power. “We want to fight BJP politically, tooth and nail. We certainly don’t want to harm Congress. That’s why we didn’t venture into Uttar Pradesh or Punjab. But the fight against BJP can’t indefinitely wait for someone,” he said, in an oblique reference to his party’s allegations of lack of Congress activity. Trinamool Congress has had three previous attempts to expand party based in Tripura, starting with former Chief Minister Sudhir Ranjan Majumder who started TMC’s state unit in 1999. Six Congress MLAs shifted camps and joined Trinamool Congress in 2016, only to further shift to BJP a year later. TMC’s rank and file has seen a swell since the party’s win in Bengal earlier in 2021.

He said the police has to “redefine” its role and focus on fighting crime firmly, improve quality of investigation and be more citizen centric. Addressing the inaugural session of a two-day conference of superintendents of police here, Sarma said the force needs to tackle insurgency and also maintain the sovereignty of the country. He said top officials of the Army and the Air Force were attending the meet to present their perspectives on how the forces can coordinate better. The AOC-in-C of the Eastern Air Command and the GOC of the 4 Corps were also present on the occasion. “We shall be able to hear their views on law and order, insurgency and the role of Assam Police in the event of conflict in the international border,” the chief minister said. “This conference is

Sarma said insurgency was on the wane in Assam, with very few instances of tribal militancy and all groups coming forward for peace talks. He said police personnel in the state have dedicated themselves in the last few decades to protect India’s sovereignty, and many have been killed by insurgent groups “patronised by forces inside and outside the country”. There were a “few more obstacles” before police can discuss post-militancy scenario in the state, the CM said. “Of course, we have challenges from other fronts and we will discuss emerging threats in the state, in the northeast and elsewhere during this meet.”

CPI-M opposes handing over of CM rolls out vaccination Agartala airport to Adani group drive for 15-18 yr-olds Rs 35 crore for rehabilitation of the residents of the area to retain the airport with the government but now Modi government gave it to Adani group. We condemn and demand the roll back of the decision,” Dey said. He said that the importance of Agartala airport was increasing because of passenger traffic from neighbouring Bangladesh who has been travelling to Indian cities, mostly for medical treatment, via Agartala. From the beginning, the then Left Front government has persuaded to make it an international airport connecting Dhaka, Chittagong and other important South Asian destinations for the economic development of Tripura, Dey underlined. “It is seen that the number of flights is higher in comparison to the population of this state. Hence, from where do so many flight passengers appear? After railway connectivity in 2008 following our movement, people from Barak Valley of Assam opted for flights from Agartala,” he stated.

Violence had erupted in Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3 last year when farmers were protesting the visit of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya to Mishra’s native place. Four agitating farmers were run over by a vehicle while four others, including a journalist, two BJP workers were also killed in the violence that ensued.

EC asks five poll-bound states to step up vaccination drive NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): Days after assessing the COVID-19 situation in the five poll-bound states, the Election Commission (EC) has asked them to step up the inoculation drive against the viral disease and ensure that the personnel to be deployed on election duty are “double vaccinated”. In a recent letter to the chief secretaries of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur and Punjab, the EC has also reminded the five states that polling personnel come under the category of frontline workers and are eligible for the “precaution dose” of the Covid vaccines, sources said. The commission has said the polling personnel to be deployed in these states should be fully vaccinated and those eligible for the second dose of the vaccines should be administered the jabs on a priority basis, the sources said citing the letter. While the tenure of the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly ends in May, the terms of the legislative assemblies of Goa, Manipur and Punjab end on different dates in March. The EC is likely to announce the poll dates for the

five states in the first half of this month. The personnel to be deployed on election duty in the five poll-bound states will be included in the category of frontline workers and will be entitled to the “precaution dose” of the COVID-19 vaccines, the Union health ministry had said a few days ago. In a letter to the states and Union ter ritories, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan had said the personnel to be deployed on election duty in the pollbound states will be included in the category of frontline workers. “As a matter of abundant precaution, for those healthcare workers and frontline workers who have received two doses, another dose of COVID-19 vaccine would be provided from January 10, 2022.

“The prioritisation and sequencing of this precaution dose would be based on the completion of nine months i.e. 39 weeks from the date of administration of the second dose,” he had said in the letter. The EC, along with Bhushan, had assessed the Covid situation in the five states on December 27 and asked the government to expedite the vaccination programme in these states. It had noted that the percentage of those who have received the first dose of the vaccines was still less in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Manipur, while it was nearing 100 per cent in Uttarakhand and Goa. The poll panel had also asked the Union health secretary to expedite the administration of the second dose of the vaccine to those eligible in these five states.

Centre refutes reports of ‘expired Covid vaccines’ NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): Dismissing reports alleging expired Covid vaccines are being administered in India as “false and misleading”, the Centre on Monday clarified that the national regulator had approved the shelf life extension of Covishield and Covaxin in February and October, 2021 respectively. “There have been some media reports alleging that expired vaccines are being administered in India under its national COVID-19 vaccination programme. This is false and misleading and based on incomplete information,” the health ministry said in a statement. CDSCO had on October 25, 2021 approved the extension of shelf life of Covaxin (Whole Virion, Inactivated Coronavirus Vaccine) from nine months to 12 months, the ministry said. Similarly, shelf life of Covishield has been extended by the national regulator from six months to nine months on February 22, 2021. Shelf life of vaccines is extended by country’s drug regulator based on comprehensive analysis and examination of stability study data furnished by vaccine manufacturers, it stated.

KOTTAYAM (KER), JAN 3 (PTI): Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday expressed his strong disapproval of attempts to ridicule other religions and create dissensions in the society, saying every person has the right to practice and preach his or her faith in the country. “Practice your religion but don’t abuse and indulge in hate speech and writings,” the Vice President said at an event organised to mark the 150th death anniversary of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara, a spiritual leader and social reformer from the Kerala Catholic community, at Mannanam near here. Observing that hate speeches and writings are against culture, heritage, traditions, constitutional rights and ethos, Naidu said secularism is in the blood of every Indian and the country is respected world-over for its culture and heritage. In this context, the Vice President called for strengthening the Indian value sys-

The Congress considers Chauhan a prize catch as the party is wary of AAP cutting into its votes in the hill state. The AAP is eyeing the vote bank of ex-servicemen with Colonel Ajay Kothiyal heading the party. Kothiyal, is a decorated former officer of the Indian Army and AAP CM candidate for the 2022 Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly elections. The Congress sensed this move of the AAP and organised a rally to honour veterans. The party felicitated veterans of the 1971 India-Pakistan war after the end of the year-long celebration of 50th anniversary of Bangladesh Liberation.

ment order for his extension, he has been sent back to his parent organisation DRI, officials said. The DRI is an investigation agency under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). Officials said the NCB did not seek the officer’s extension. Wankhede has been in the limelight following the high-profile October, 2021 raids by the NCB on a Mumbai cruise after which the agency arrested Aryan Khan, the son of actor Shah

Rukh Khan, and around 19 others and claimed to have seized some narcotics too. Aryan Khan and many others arrested during these raids were later released on bail. Soon after this action, Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik levelled multiple charges of alleged misconduct and corruption against the officer. Wankhede has denied the allegations, including a charge of forging his caste certificate. T h e N C B, u n d e r

Wankhede, had earlier arrested Malik’s son-in-law Sameer Khan in a narcotics case and the agency has recently moved the Bombay High Court to cancel the bail given to the latter in this case. Prabhakar Sail, an ‘independent’ witness in the cruise drugs case, had claimed and filed an affidavit that there was an extortion bid of Rs 25 crore by some agency officials, and others for letting off Aryan Khan from the case. Sail had stated that he overheard that Rs 8 crore ‘bribe’ out of this money was to be paid to Wankhede. Following these allegations, the agency headquarters here had removed Wankhede from the case apart from five others and had placed their investigation under a team led by its deputy director general (DDG) operations based in Delhi. Another DDG (northern region) is conducting a vigilance probe into the allegations of extortion in the cruise drugs case. Wankhede and his family had categorically denied these charges and said these allegations were made to deter the officer from taking strong action against drugs peddlers and syndicates operating in Mumbai.

Delhi HC extends time for FB, WhatsApp to respond to CCI notices

NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): The Delhi High Court Monday extended the time for filing replies by Facebook and WhatsApp to two notices issued to them by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) which has ordered a probe into the instant messaging app’s new privacy policy. WhatsApp and Facebook have challenged the CCI’s June 4 and 8, 2021, notices respectively, asking them to furnish certain information for the purpose of inquiry conducted by it. A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh noted that the Data Protection bill is yet to be finalised and, therefore, adjourned the proceedings to March 30. The court was hearing the appeals of Facebook and WhatsApp challenging its single-judge order dismissing their pleas against the probe ordered by the CCI into WhatsApp’s new privacy policy. “Till then the time to file replies to the June 4 and June 8, last year, notices issued by CCI to the appellants (Facebook and WhatsApp) is extended,” the bench said. The court had earlier granted time to the social

media platforms to file replies to notices and thereafter, the time was further extended. Senior advocate Harish Salve, representing WhatsApp, submitted that the Data Protection bill was tabled in the Parliament and the court had earlier granted time to file replies to the notices till October 11, 2021, but it could not be extended thereafter as the matter was not taken up. Additional Solicitor General Aman Lekhi, appearing for CCI, contended that Data Protection bill is “irrelevant” to this controversy and that the case does not deal with ‘privacy’ but with the provisions of Competition Act relating to abuse of dominant position and inquiry into certain agreements and dominant

position of an enterprise. Meanwhile, the counsel for Facebook India submitted that he has filed an application seeking to be impleaded as a party to the case. However, the court asked him to file a fresh petition. The case relates to the appeals of Facebook and WhatsApp against a single judge order dismissing their pleas against the probe CCI ordered into the instant messaging app’s new privacy policy. The division bench of the high court had on May 6, 2021, issued notices on the appeals and asked the Centre to respond to it. WhatsApp and Facebook had challenged the CCI’s March 24, 2021, order directing a probe into the new privacy policy.

Beyond AFSPA

ow that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 has been extended for a further period of six months in Nagaland, it will be a continuation of over 60 years. The extension of the AFSPA was contrary to the expectations that the government of India, would heed to the massive protests across Nagaland and the north east to repeal the Act. It may also be recalled that on December 20, all the 60 members of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, at the one-day special session unanimously resolved to urge upon the Centre to repeal of AFSPA in Nagaland by all the legislators of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), comprising of the NDPP, BJP, NFP and Independents. Such a unanimous resolution is not something that can be or should be ignored. The elected legislators represent the entire state of Nagaland and the constitution gives them the power to adopt resolution that is in line with their constitutional duties. The union home minister Amit Shah then held a meeting on December 23 with Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio, deputy chief minister Y.Patton and NPF leader T.R.Zeliang along with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the issue. Following the meeting, the home ministry instituted a 5-member committee to look into aspects of removal of AFSPA in Nagaland. The committee was given 45 days to submit its report to the government. This decision by the home ministry that was a consequence of the December 23 meeting over AFSPA raised high expectations that the Act was on its way out. However, by December 30, the union home ministry, against all expectations and demands, instead issued a notification declaring all of Nagaland as a disturbed area and extended AFSPA for another six months. The extension of AFSPA by a BJP government at the Centre, was like a slap on the face of the all-party and opposition-less UDA government where BJP is a major alliance partner. The response of the home ministry to the pleas and house resolution only makes it obvious, that when it comes to law and order, the state government has not exactly endeared itself with the Centre. True that AFSPA provides armed forces with draconian powers even to the point of committing murder “while assisting” the civilian government and then protected against trial in civil courts. There is no second opinion that AFSPA is fatal law. The Supreme Court had in 2016 dealt a big blow to the immunity enjoyed by security personnel under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act of 1958 (AFSPA) against criminal action for acts committed in disturbed areas. The apex court held that “there is no concept of absolute immunity from trial by a criminal court” if an Army man has committed an offence. AFSPA is as controversial as it will be but the all-party and opposition-less UDA government which unanimously resolved to seek its repeal in Nagaland, will have to ascertain if a house resolution could be brushed aside without any explanation. It makes a mockery of the state assembly and for which the triumvirate of the UDA have to do some explanation. The UDA also should explain whether solution to the Naga political issue is top priority or the repeal of AFSPA? Was it not formed for the sake of early solution to the Naga political issue? Also whether repeal of AFSPA will immediately or likely bring solution to the Naga political issue? Or has AFSPA become the red herring?

DailyDevotion Clouds and Darkness

Clouds and darkness surround Him… —Psalm 97:2

A person who has not been born again by the Spirit of God will tell you that the teachings of Jesus are simple. But when he is baptized by the Holy Spirit, he finds that “clouds and darkness surround Him….” When we come into close contact with the teachings of Jesus Christ we have our first realization of this. The only possible way to have full understanding of the teachings of Jesus is through the light of the Spirit of God shining inside us. If we have never had the experience of taking our casual, religious shoes off our casual, religious feet— getting rid of all the excessive informality with which we approach God— it is questionable whether we have ever stood in His presence. The people who are flippant and disrespectful in their approach to God are those who have never been introduced to Jesus Christ. Only after the amazing delight and liberty of realizing what Jesus Christ does, comes the impenetrable “darkness” of realizing who He is. Jesus said, “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). Once, the Bible was just so many words to us — “clouds and darkness”— then, suddenly, the words become spirit and life because Jesus re-speaks them to us when our circumstances make the words new. That is the way God speaks to us; not by visions and dreams, but by words. When a man gets to God, it is by the most simple way— words.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, JANUARY 4, 2022

Post-mortem

ACAUT calls for united approach to tackle issues A CAUT Nagaland reminds the people of Nagaland that expediting the Naga political settlement was one of the key resolution of the ACAUT public rally on 31st October 2013, which was reaffirmed on 26th August 2017 public rally. ACAUT wholeheartedly was part and parcel of the Core Committee of Nagaland Tribal Hohos and Civil Organisations (CCNTHCO) that stood for “Solution before Election” in 2018, which has its precedent set in the 1998 election. However, the BJP incharge of Northeast India Ram Madav declared “Election for Solution” and went ahead with the polls. In the unfolding political arena of Nagaland, the formation of the oppositionless United Democratic Alliance (UDA) government by all the collective elected members of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly was the logical step taken to bring solution before next election as mandated. The elected legislators should resolve during their short timeline tenure

to resign in mass to prove their commitment and pave the way for the Centre to take a final call for early solution otherwise the Nagaland electorates should reject all the present elected members in the next year election. This year is the silver jubilee milestone for one of the longest running Ceasefire in the world. Nagas should deliberate whether that merits jubilation or introspective analysis. As for the general public the Ceasefire have instead granted legal licence for multiplying factions with unaccounted weapons issued under various categories, monitored by an effeminate Ceasefire Monitoring Group. The dozens of recognized Naga Political Groups (NPGs) are contented with the status quo and have resulted in the flooding of multiple and unabated taxations making life unbearable for the general public. On the other hand, the cancerous growth of unchecked corruption has rendered the fruits of statehood concentrated in the

t is a modern age fact that education and literacy are the keys to a good future for any individual, yet it is observed that much of our population remains illiterate even after knowing the importance of the education. It is the responsibility of every Indian citizen to stand up against the illiteracy and help nation fight against this curse. However young people do need to play a key role in this and they have a social responsibility to help eradicate illiteracy in their country. India, since ever, has been divided into two sections of society that includes the privileged and the deprived sections. There have been constant debates and discussions on how to merge this difference and create a prosperous nation. A ray of hope that could reduce this difference can be in the form of education. Education can help one gain a lot, an educated person is well in the knowledge of his rights and is in a state to do work in a better way and hence is never short of opportunities to make his life successful. But unfortunately, the access to education has not been really easy for the deprived sections in our country. There is a lot of caste and community-based differences also prevailing in the society as a result of which, the poor kids are not able to get the education that they should. Though the government has made provision for the education of every single child of our country and also made elementary education compulsory by RTE Act, still these children do not get what they deserve and

hands of a few. The delay in settlement has led to the decay of basic Naga tenets and ethos. The competencies and agreed positions should be publicly discussed through the apex Naga tribal bodies with a sense of urgency under a given deadline. Every Naga citizen as the major stakeholders should be part of any concluding agreement, as the will of the people reigns supreme. The horrendous Oting massacre is a major symptomatic eruption of a dysfunctional state where an animal life has more rights than a human life. The provisions of APSPA not only curtails the fundamental rights of a citizen under the Indian Constitution but treats people living under the disturbed area as suspects and can be killed without question. The very basic right to live is trampled under this draconian law enabling military occupation. For 64 years long Nagas have endured extra judicial killings, random unaccounted rapes, unwarranted arrests and excesses that have degraded human

dignity without a ray of hope for justice. The Supreme Court of India continues to be a stoic and gagged spectator against its own citizens when it upheld the imposition of AFSPA in 1997 after 15 years of lawsuit. If the Centre has not given prosecution sanction under the pretext of threat to national security and sovereignty, then the Centre should neither delay in giving an honourable Naga solution. The resurrection of APSPA vis a vis the 4th December 2021, Oting massacre should be the wake up clarion call to resolve the protracted IndoNaga political issue once and for all. The Hornbill Festival preceded the Oting massacre and the overwhelming mourning period brought about an abrupt ending to the festival of festivals, exposing the contradictory events and paradoxical world with which the Nagas live every day. It was in the same Festival in 2014 during the inaugural speech that the Prime Minister em-

phasized to showcase the Nagas “unique cultural heritage” to others and make Nagaland and India beneficiaries. However, the rupturing of the sensitive political wound of Nagaland’s “unique history”, every now and then curtails and punctures the window of hope and opportunities especially for the youths. India as a signatory of the United Nation Universal Declaration of Human Rights is not only belittling its commitment but also committing apartheid among the mongoloid Nagas in the eyes of the world. Many Naga revolutionary leaders have given their all but some have instead mired in petty infighting making the Naga cause minuscule and demeaning the generational sacrifices. The upcoming young generation of Nagas should be dignified global citizens, proud of our cultural identity and factual historical foundation, based on truth and respect. The 20th December 2021 Assembly resolution to repeal APSPA has been made a farce by overriding

are either left to work as child laborers or denied education due to lack of awareness. Certainly, there is no doubt that the quality education empowers an individual towards quality life and a secure future as well. Education is something that opens all the doors towards success and free thinking and an educated person tends to create a much better and confident approach towards the life. The government has also taken various measures to ensure proper education level in the country with the help of various plans, projects and schemes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan, Mid-Day Meal and different education laws like the Right to Education Act to promote as well as ease the access to education in India. The main aim is the social development of the nation. At the same time there is also need for the citizens, especially the youth of India to actually become dedicated towards the cause of making education accessible to all the children of India, and also make their contribution towards the cause as much as possible. Government is really concerned on the issue of education and is constantly coming up with various educational schemes and is also spending a plenty of funds, but lack the people who can make these schemes work effectively and judiciously. There is a lack of motivation and desire as well. Hence there is a need that young people should come up with innovative ideas and also make groups help out as much number of people as they can. There are

a lot of student groups who are giving free education to needy children in the form of free tuition or teaching them some basic knowledge during evening time. Need for the Concept Each One Teach One Education is like a flame of fire that needs just a medium to be spread, a small spark can ignite a whole flame. Even in this 21st century also, there are millions of people in our country who are still ignorant of the world of knowledge. There also a lot of people who clearly understand the need and benefits of the education but still either do not enroll their children in education or do not have sufficient resource to manage education for their children. There are also some who are just negligent about the need for education. Many factors work for their situation does not give time for the education at school. One of the reasons can be attributed to the economic backwardness. There are also a lot of children who leave their school even before completing their basic schooling. There is no doubt that India is developing at quite a fast pace, and this is a fact that there are still millions of people in the country who don’t want to send their children to the schools. There is no doubt that the government is taking many initiatives to ensure basic education for all the children, but the major limitation is public awareness, these initiatives also don’t seem to become fruitful because of lack of public consciousness as well as

awareness. Role of Youth in the Cause Youth has an important role to play in the developmental process of a nation. Youth can lead a nation towards some really high achievement levels. If youth take their interest in these activities, they can really help out in achieving some really surprising results and also can help in creating a lot of awareness among the people. Apart from the plans initiated by the government or collaborative efforts made by some non-government organizations, the educated young people of our society should take a keen interest and contribute by spreading awareness about the need for education and practicing simple phenomena like ‘each one teach one’. Students and young professionals can help out in a lot of ways. You need not be a scholar, but still, your basics can even prove out to be really useful knowledge for someone else. If different groups of students from colleges decide to take up the challenge they can spread awareness about the need for being educated. Apart from this they can organize classes in a group for the needy children or may also organize regular weekend camps in some nearby rural areas which may also prove out to be a good fun trip with the friends. This can also prove out to be really motivating for others who are really concerned about the education level of our country and are also equipped with the talent to provide a lot to society, but cannot work for the cause due

the Article 371(A) provision which state that no Act of the Parliament shall apply in Nagaland unless the State Assembly decides by extending the APSPA for another 6 months. The Pied Piper’s tune of the politicians for early solution during every election has taken the Naga public for a ride, as many ran with the hare and hunted with the hounds for too long. The time of reckoning has come for the young Nagas to decide to live for something rather than die for nothing, to sink in chaos or rise to challenges. The New Year should be a harbinger for the Nagas to stomp our feet together and declare, enough is enough of everything that is rotting in Nagaland. We are at the threshold of transition and when the right time comes to rise to the occasion, the onus will be on us to roll. Kuknalim! to family constraints or due to lack of motivation and support. Watching other groups doing this can also be a motivating force to join them and help out in the cause. Advantages of the Concept Each One Teach One Each one, teach one is a concept that brings with it a lot of mental satisfaction if you are involved in teaching someone or even if you are promoting the concept of spreading the awareness. The idea of working for a social cause gives you an immense sense of satisfaction and peace of mind. It is a really noble cause that may change the whole life of an individual being taught. Apart from mental satisfaction, the progress of the country is also directly related to the education level of the country that further determines the crime rate of a country as well. Some other advantages related to the concept are: H e l p yo u r h o u s e m a i d , watchman, garbage collector, a vegetable vendor and those underprivileged people to learn; read and write, and these people help make your life better and easier. You can also offer to teach others or bring people who want to learn. You can motivate some others who have the skills to do this but just need a boost. You can also contribute materials or space for teaching which also gives a great sense of satisfaction towards a noble cause. Vijay GarG Retired Principal, Malout

An eye-catching CD Plate

ince day one of my transfer to the national capital after ab-initio training, the first guideline was from our seniors for not taking any lift from a vehicle having the blue number plate with first two letters such as CD (Corps Diplomatic), UN (United Nations) registration, CC (Consular Corps), or engaged with embassy personnel at social function to safeguard ourselves from any undercover activities. Defence Service called it as espionage and we suffered sometime from a phobia about that CD / UN (blue plate), CC (yellow plate) as New Delhi surrounded by Embassies, Consulates and High Commissions near Shanti Path that any Delhiite witnesses day to day. In early years of 90s, aspirational middle class Indian didn’t access to any luxury sedan other than people’s car Maruti or India’s most loved family car

Premier Padmini. We saw red beacon flashing from atop a Hindustan Ambassador and a chauffeur at the wheel speeding down the Delhi road. The white car was associated with people in power ferrying the elite including prime ministers, bureaucrats, politicians and high-society celebrities. It was the de-facto vehicle of officialdom. The original backseat Babu car was based on the 1950s British Morris Oxford which was the only car available in India during early 1960s. But the capital of India hosts a large number of people from various diplomatic missions that gave opportunity to see foreign luxury vehicles on Delhi roads. The list is endless of four rings of Mercedes to three-pointed star of Audi, three overlapping ellipses of Toyota and what’s more, the new brands and logos were zoomed off on every outing. We didn’t cower in alarm as

cars whizzed past on smooth surface of Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The movements were almost seamless albeit heavy traffics, emission and thudding noise of tires over the fine sticky dark bitumen roads. The Arjun Path goes through our huge campus and there was a flag meeting at Trishul there with Commander-in-Chief of Wester n Air Command on other day. The securities had been warned to be extra vigilant for that occasion forcing DSCs (Defence Security Corps) to check everyone entering through our by-pass. It was my first winter in Subroto Park and felt very cold and bleak on that wintry day. I was in the armchair at the fireside seeping a coffee at supper bar. Dense fog in the evening is usually prevailed over there thereby reducing visibility. In the meantime I detected one approaching black Sedan under fog using

headlamps and fog lamps. The plate wasn’t visible and failed to read the registration number too but only thing I noticed of uniting four rings. Its windshield wipers were failing to clean tiny water droplets and fogging obstructed my vision to identify the visitor. The DSC guard was puzzled and challenged the intruder. After it was finally stopped and indicating its Hazard Lights on the middle of the road. As I heard the guard shouting, I quickly moved near and couldn’t resist peeping in. while the tinted glass pulled down by the driver seat, I saw one gentleman at steering wheel smoking tobacco out of a pipe and a half filled wine glass on cup holder. The insane deep voice of the person shocked me. “I want to cross the road.” It came to my mind of Diplomatic Corps assuming him to be embassy personnel. “Sir, do you have any

pass please?” The reply was instantly ‘No’. I tried to convey him as there was restriction on that day for a special security reason from SRO (Station Routine Order) of military establishment. But he seemed to be adamant that he was not going to follow. I politely asked him again “Would you mind showing me your ID please? or to follow the main road instead. The next line caused me to feel worried as he flashed his most winning smile. “Gentleman, I am ex General Batra” and had shown his ID card. The general surely earned a salute from me upon knowing his Rank although retired Officers aren’t entitled. He nodded to wave me back too. It’s a sign of respect; one may salute to anyone, one wish. But I faithfully followed my profession, never hesitating to respond to the call of duty. The car moved speedily from a standstill

and lastly saw it neither a blue diplomatic plates or yellow of foreign mission, nor a black plate starting with broad arrow by Armed Forces but Delhi registration for Private Vehicle DL on a white plate instead. Things are no longer an instant eye-catcher in my hometown today but old habits die hard as the other day I had shown to my daughter of white lettering on a light blue background UN number plate differentiated with other registration. Private cars take up way too much space in our city these days also we saw a many black lettering on a yellow background too. These are commercial vehicles but I am starting to wonder whether I did the right observation in finding General’s diplomatic plate. I realized I had made a serious faux pas and made some real gaffes. Kamal Baruah, Guwahati

NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): Congress president Sonia Gandhi asked chief ministers of party-ruled states and CLP leaders in states where the Congress shares power to pull up their socks and ensure that the threat of Omicron and Delta variant of coronavirus are adequately prevented. Sources said Gandhi called some chief ministers and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leaders Monday morning and some on Sunday, and sought to know the government’s preparedness in tackling the spread of the virus in the wake of the Omicron threat. While Gandhi called Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Sunday,

Man fakes own kidnapping

GURUGRAM, JAN 3 (IANS): A man was arrested for allegedly faking his kidnapping and demanding a ransom worth Rs 2 lakh from his wife as he wanted to repay a debt he had taken from people, the police said. The accused was identified as Anoop Yadav, a resident of Rajiv Nagar in Gurugram. The accused decided to fake his kidnapping as he was unable to repay the debt he had taken from people. On January 2, Deepika, the complainant, lodged a complaint at the Sector-29 police station about kidnapping of her husband Anoop Yadav from Down Town Club in Sector-29 and that the abductor has sent a WhatsApp message to her, asking her to pay Rs 2 lakh for his release. According to the complainant, the message read -- “Anoop Yadav is in our custody, and if you want to see his face, then arrange Rs 2 lakh”. Acting swiftly, the police through technical surveillance nabbed the accused from IMT Chowk on the Delhi-Jaipur expressway on Monday. During interrogation, the he disclosed that no one had abducted him. “Yadav who is a supervisor at the club himself had sent messages to his wife on WhatsApp informing about his kidnapping and asking for the ransom...” investigating officer told IANS.

Sonia Gandhi she dialled Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday. She also talked to Maharashtra minister Balasaheb Thorat and CLP leader and senior minister in Jharkhand Alamgir Alam over their preparedness on checking the spread of Omicron. According to the sources, the Congress chief asked them about their govern-

ment’s policy on checking the extent of the infection and testing. She also sought to know about the plans of each of the states where Congress is in power to increase testing and ensure availability of beds, ventilators and oxygen in their states. She also sought details of the steps to control the crowds and what orders have been issued in this direction, besides tracing protocols for those arriving from foreign countries. Gandhi is also learnt to have enquired about the state of vaccinations, particularly for the elderly and people with co-morbidities, corona warriors and children and how quickly can they meet up the targets.

NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday reviewed the country’s prevailing security situation and emerging challenges that include threats from global terror organisations, illicit use of cyberspace and “movement of foreign terrorist fighters”. This was the first such high-level meeting, chaired by Shah and attended by the top brass of the country’s security and intelligence apparatus, in the new year. “Hon’ble Union home minister conducted a highlevel security meeting today to review the prevailing threat scenario in the country and the emerging security challenges,” an official statement

Bulli Bai app row: Delhi Police seek info from Twitter, GitHub DCW asks cops to appear before it NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): Amid outrage over Muslim women being targeted through a dodgy app, the Delhi Police sought details from the GitHub platform about the developer of the ‘Bulli Bai’ mobile application and asked Twitter to block and remove related “offensive contents” on its platform. The police have also sought from Twitter information about the account handler who first tweeted about the app. Leaders from across the political spectrum condemned the cyber harassment of women belonging to the minority community and called for strict action against the guilty. Many blamed it on right-wing elements. Terming the matter “serious”, Delhi Minorities Commission issued a notice to city police chief Rakesh Asthana seeking an actiontaken report on January 10. It said the interests of Muslim women need to be safeguarded by nabbing the culprits. The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has also asked police officials to appear before it later this week. Hundreds of Muslim

women were listed for “auction” on the app with photographs sourced without permission and doctored. It has happened for the second time in less than a year. The app appeared to be a clone of Sulli Deals which triggered a similar row last year. Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge condemned the harassment of Muslim women and alleged that it was the result of the repeated “dehumanisation of minorities by the BJP”. “Strongly condemn this disgusting harassment of Muslim women. This is the result of repeated dehumanisation of minorities by the BJP leadership,” Kharge said on Twitter. “Why were previous instances of similar harassment ignored? I hope this time, the strongest action against the guilty will be taken,” he added. BJP leader and Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi accursed those behind the app and said any “cyber criminal commu-

nal conspiracy” against the country’s composite culture will not succeed. Interacting with reporters, Naqvi, who is the Union Minister for Minority Affairs, noted the government has been acting in the matter and said such targeting of women is unacceptable. Stern action is being taken against such criminals and their “communal conspiracy” will be exposed soon, he said. She pointed out that Rajya Sabha has 29 women members, and the Lok Sabha has 81 women members. “I am sure all my female colleagues will have much to contribute to the discussion on this issue. “I request you to use the powers of your office to open the meetings of the Committee on this issue to testimonials from any of the Honourable women members, and request you to allot time accordingly,” she said. DMK leader and Lok Sabha member Kanimozhi also expressed her displeasure over the inadequate representation of women in the panel. “There are a total of 110 female MPs but the govt. chooses to assign a

SKM to meet on Jan 15, Tikait says its time govt acts on MSP

SRINAGAR, JAN 3 (PTI): Two terrorists including a wanted LeT ultra Salim Parray were killed in two encounters with security forces in Harwan area on the outskirts of the city on Monday, police said. “Srinagar police neutralised dreaded terrorist of proscribed terror outfit LeT Salim Parray,” IGP Kashmir Zone Vijay Kumar said. He said details of the operation will be shared later. Another encounter broke out between the ultras and security forces at nearby Gasu village, police officials said. “An unidentified militant has been killed in the operation which was going on till reports last came in,” the officials said adding the identity and group affiliation of the slain militant was being ascertained.

NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (IANS): Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait, who was one of the main faces of the farmers movement, said that the issue of Minimum Support Price (MSP) is pending for a long time, and it is time that the government takes early decision on it. In an exclusive chat with IANS, Tikait said that a meeting of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) will be held on January 15 in which further strategy on MSP will be decided. He said all political parties are hungry for votes and they don’t care about the welfare of farmers. Questioning the over-

bill that affects every young woman in the country to a panel that has 30 men and only one woman. Men will continue to decide the rights of women. And women will be made mute spectators,” she wrote on Twitter. “The much-lauded change in the legal age of marriage for women glides through the rocks of underrepresentation, inadequate stakeholder consultation and ignoring expert opinion,” Rajya Sabha member from NCP Fauzia Khan said “We can keep making committees to ensure granularity in focus but if the democratic values are compromised, it’s never really welfare,” Khan said. Chaturvedi said it was of utmost importance that the interests of all stakeholders were taken into account and that the voices of all, especially women, are heard and understood by the committee. The bill will apply to all the communities and once enacted, supersede the existing marriage and personal laws. The introduction of the bill in Parliament was opposed by some members, who had contended that the move infringed upon several personal laws in violation of the fundamental rights and demanded that it be referred to a parliamentary panel for greater scrutiny.

Rakesh Tikait nment’s intention, he said that it has not taken any steps to resolve the issue of MSP, nor has there been any discussion with farm leaders on the issue. Also, cases registered against the farmers have not yet been withdrawn, while the farmers who died during the agitation have also not been compensated.

Quoting India’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru, Singh said, “When I want to know the future of India, I do not look at stars and planets, but into the eyes of little children. NEW DELHI, JAN 3 (PTI): Women MPs on Monday sought greater participation in the scrutiny of a bill that seeks to increase the legal age of marriage for females from 18 to 21 years, expressing dismay over their inadequate representation in the parliamentary panel examining the proposed law. Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev, a Rajya Sabha member from West Bengal, is the lone woman member in the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports that is scrutinising the Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill. “This is disheartening to note that a bill so pertinent to women and the Indian society will be deliberated upon in a committee where the representation is highly skewed,” Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi, a member of the Upper House of Parliament from Maharashtra, said in a letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu. Chaturvedi urged Naidu to ensure more participation of women in the discussion around the Bill. “Therefore, I request you to ensure that there should be more representation and participation of women in the discussion around the bill that concerns

during the COVID-19 pandemic, from testing to datatransfer and analysis. He also recalled the four major pillars of reforms in the sector envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These pillars are freedom of innovation to private sector; role of government as an enabler; preparing the youth for the future; and viewing the space sector as a resource for progress. He hoped that the actions identified in the pillars will take the space sector to newer heights and give new direction to the country’s progress. The defence minister likened KCCRSST with ‘pride of India’ Kalpana Chawla, hoping that the research facility will touch new heights of success, similar to the remarkable achievements of the late India-born astronaut who

through satellite imagery, and identifying problems related to crops and fields for farmers is helping the government in many ways,” he added. The Union minister also called for working towards development of futuristic technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Big-Data and Block-chain for the overall development of the nation. Remembering Kalpana Chawla, he described her as a symbol of women empowerment who “took a flight beyond imagination”. Notably, the Kalpana Chawla Centre for Research in Space Science & Technology has been established with the objective of training students in space science, satellite development and meet future challenges in space research. The state-of-the-art facility will be the Ground Control Station for the Chandigarh University’s Student Satellite (CUSat), an in-house developed nanosatellite being designed by the students of the university and a Geo-Spatial Centre for research, besides other projects. The CUSat will be among the 75 student-built satellites to be launched into space on the eve of the Independence Day in 2022.

tor is exposed to a large number of opportunities in the space sector. Whether it is defence or space, we are fully welcoming the private sector,” he said, reiterating the Centre’s commitment of strengthening the private sector for the holistic development of the nation. Singh also listed out some of the measures aimed at tapping the potential of the private sector, and said, the government is sharing technology and expertise and opening its various facilities for the industry. He stated that transfer of matured technologies is under consideration. On setting up of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), he said, the independent agency will act as a single window for matters related to the space sector. He also commended the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for being one of the world’s top space agencies since decades through its hard work and vision. “The government is laying special emphasis on promoting the use of spacebased applications through every sector, including use of geo-tagging for roads and other infrastructure in villages, monitoring of development work in remote areas

CHANDIGARH, JAN 3 (PTI): India is undertaking such reforms in space sector which were not thought about earlier, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday as he underlined the crucial role played by the sector during COVID-19 pandemic in keeping the world connected from testing to data-transfer and analysis. “We are undertaking such reforms in space sector which were not even thought about earlier,” Singh said after inaugurating the Kalpana Chawla Centre for Research in Space Science & Technology (KCCRSST) at Chandigarh University. He also launched a scholarship scheme worth Rs 10 crore for the wards of defence personnel of the three services. The minister said keeping in view its importance and understanding its potential, the government has made space sector an important part of its vision. Underlining the importance of the sector in contemporary times, he said it is deeply connected with mapping, imaging and connectivity facilities, speedy transportation, weather forecast, disaster management as well as border security. Singh noted that it played a crucial role in keeping the world connected

The clampdown, critics said, came just ahead of elections in five states, including Punjab and Uttar Pradesh where the issue had been raging since 2020. “Modi ji cancelled the laws when he understood the concerns. If he would have heard me earlier, the political backlash and the loss of lives could have been avoided,” Malik further told NDTV on Monday. “But better late than never. BJP should not be rigid in its approach. The PM’s cancellation of laws... people have now accepted. Earlier the resentment against him had grown which has now lessened.” To the opposition parties latching on to his comments, he has just one message- “This is an internal issue. Now, today, with the experience and the time, since when the vaccine was produced, the shelf-life has been evaluated through various animal studies. Russia and the U.S. have engaged in high-stakes diplomatic discussions over Ukraine in recent weeks. Biden urged Putin to de-escalate tensions in a 50-minute phone call Thursday. Biden warned Putin that the U.S. could impose new sanctions if Russia takes military action against Ukraine. The call, the second between Biden and Putin last month, was requested by the Russians. “We made it clear to President Putin that if he makes any more moves and goes into Ukraine, we will have severe sanctions. We will increase our presence in Europe with our NATO allies, and it will be a heavy

Biden made similar remarks in a call with Putin in early December, when Biden said Moscow would face “severe consequences” if it moved on Ukraine. Putin warned on the call that relations could be completely severed if Biden imposed sanctions, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov told reporters Friday, according to the Russian news agency TASS. In a phone call Wednesday with Zelenskyy, Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed U.S. support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in a statement. “The two discussed

The former British colony that was returned to China in 1997 was once

Regrettably, what was ahead of us is not just pouring rains or blowing winds, but hurricanes and tsunamis,” Citizen News said in a statement on Sunday, when it announced the closure. The outlet is the third to close in recent months, following the shuttering of the territory’s last pro-democracy print newspaper, Apple Daily, and the online site Stand News. Citizen News was founded in 2017 by a group of veteran journalists. The small site focused on political news and analysis pieces, as well as investigations — and in recent months became a refuge for many journalists who had lost their jobs when other outlets closed or faced other pressures.

The demonstrators on Sunday were holding placards that said “our seized money should be handed over!” and “Give us our frozen money”, reports xinhua news agency. “The special demand of Afghan people and my demand is to unfreeze our money, it is our rights, they should give our rights, otherwise we will continue our demonstration to make our voice heard,” a protester Zekrullah said in a diplomatic district near the shuttered US embassy, adding that the demonstrators came from different provinces. The protesters said a ban on Afghan assets was an act against the international laws and a violation of international principles.

SEOUL, JAN 3 (AGENCIES): A person who crossed the border from South Korea into North Korea on New Year’s Day was likely a defector who had slipped through the same heavily fortified frontier in the other direction to settle in South Korea in late 2020, the military said Monday. South Korean surveillance equipment detected an unidentified person moving into North Korean territory across the eastern portion of the border on Saturday. The military said a security camera showed a person earlier Saturday crawling over a barbedwire fence along the southern edge of the border. On Monday, the Defense Ministry said in a statement it suspects an earlier North Korean defector was the border crosser and that it is trying to confirm related information. A ministry official said the statement refers to a former North Korean citizen who was captured south of the border in November 2020. The man identified himself as a former gymnast and told investigators that he had crawled over barbed wire fences to defect before be-

The official said the appearance of the person detected by the South Korean security camera on Saturday matched the former defector. The person’s fate isn’t known. A South Korean thermal observation device detected four people in the northern part of the border after Saturday’s border crossing, the Defense Ministry official said. This could suggest three North Korean soldiers came to take the border crosser away from the border. South Korea asked North Korea to ensure the person’s safety via a mili-

ISLAMABAD, JAN 3 (PTI): Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Monday that his country was ready to host the 19th SAARC Summit and India can join it virtually if the leadership in New Delhi is not willing to visit Islamabad. Addressing a press conference to highlight the achievements of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2021, Qureshi accused India of making SAARC dysfunctional through its stubbornness by refusing to come to Islamabad for the Summit meeting. “I reiterate the invitation for the 19th SAARC summit. Summit was originally planned to be held in Islamabad on November 1519, 2016. But after a terror attack on an Indian Army camp in Uri in Jammu and Kashmir on September 18 that year, India expressed its inability to participate in the summit due to “prevailing circumstances”. The summit was called off after Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan also declined to participate in the Islamabad meet. Noting that there was no change in relations with India in 2021, Qureshi cited the alleged dominance of “Hindutva thinking” in India for sabotaging the prospects of good ties between the two countries.

Biden reaffirms US support to Ukraine WASHINGTON, JAN 3 (AGENCIES): President Joe Biden spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by phone Sunday, reaffirming U.S. support for Ukraine as it faces growing Russian aggression, the White House said. Russia has built up 100,000 or so troops along the border with Ukraine, prompting fears of an invasion as early as this month. Russia has repeatedly denied that it plans to attack its neighbor, but Biden administration officials have said they are prepared for the possibility. The call is the second the two leaders have held in recent weeks. Biden also urged Russian President Vladimir Putin last week to de-escalate tensions on Ukraine’s border. Biden told Zelenskyy that the U.S. and its allies and partners will “respond decisively” if Russia invades, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement. “Biden underscored the commitment of the United States and its allies and partners to the principle of ‘nothing about you without you,’” Psaki said. “He also expressed support for confidence-building measures to de-escalate tensions in Donbas and active diplomacy to advance

‘Spider-Man’ perched at No. 3 spot among all Hollywood films released in India

I

n just 18 days since its theatrical release, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, with Tom Holland and Zendaya playing the lead roles, has become the third highest grosser among Hollywood films in India, after ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019) and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018). Till date, the film, which has globally surpassed the $1-billion-mark, has grossed Rs 259.67 crore in India, netting Rs 202.34 crore after tax. That makes it No. 3 among all films released in India in 2021, after Allu Arjun’s ‘Pushpa: The Rise’ and the Akshay Kumar-led ‘Sooryavanshi’. Among Hollywood films in India, ‘SpiderMan’ is within leaping distance from the pickings of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (Rs 227.43 crore), but is still quite far from ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (Rs 373.22 crore). Analysts expect the global earnings of ‘Spider-

Man’ to see a sharp spike after its release in China, the world’s largest cinemagoing market. The film’s unexpected success would have been a cause for celebration, but for the shadow of the Omicron surge, which has made the Delhi government shut down cinema theatres and several state governments reverting to the 50 per cent occupancy rule. TS member Suga has made a “full recovery” from COVID-19, the management agency of the popular South Korean music septet BigHit Music said on Monday. Suga, who tested positive for the virus on December 24, will now resume his day-to-day activities. “We would like to inform you that BTS member SUGA has made a full recovery from COVID-19 and his quarantine has concluded as of today at noon, January 3. “SUGA who had been receiving treatment from home for the past ten days from Friday, December 24 is now able to return to his daily activities,” BigHit Music said in a statement shared on the fan community forum Weverse. The 28-year-old rapper, whose real name is Min Yoon-gi, did not exhibit any particular symptoms during his quarantine. Suga is currently recuperating while resting at home. Later in the day, he took to Weverse to inform fan group ARMY that his time under quarantine had ended. “Released from the quarantine,” Suga wrote. In the statement, BigHit Music expressed their gratitude to fans who have shown concerns for the artist’s health as well as those in the medical field who are doing their best to overcome COVID-19. “We will continue to place the health of the

artists as our top priority, and to vigilantly follow the healthcare guidelines,” the agency further said. Suga had tested positive for the virus during his self-quarantine, after taking the PCR test upon his return to South Korea from the US on December 23. “ I ’ m ve r y g o o d . Don’t worry too much,” he had written in an update for the band’s fan group ARMY on Weverse on December 27. (PTI)

rector S.S. Rajamouli’s multi-lingual ‘RRR’ -- have been put in the backburner because their makers wish to wait and watch how the Covid-19 surge pans out. Talking about the success of ‘Spider-Man’, independent film trade analyst Sumit Kadel said: “It was bound to do well because it is a Marvel Studios film. Films coming out of the Marvel universe are hugely popular in India. The coming together of all the actors who had previously essayed the title role,

namely, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, also did the trick.” Media and internet research analyst Karan Taurani added: “The film offers a large-scale cinema experience. That is why people have gone out to watch the film in large numbers as this experience cannot be replicated on a smart screen or on TV.” Turning his focus on the audience profile, Taurani said: “If you look at the demographics, what is missing right now from the theatres is the 45-60 age bracket. These are the people who haven’t started coming to the cinemas in the way they used to before the pandemic. The footfalls of the younger audience, though, have gone up to the pre-pandemic numbers.” ‘Spider-Man’, Taurani concluded, has really benefited from the ‘youth footfall’. (IANS)

inger Bryan Adams thinks his photography work has given him some of the skills he would need to direct a movie. Adams said: “I would indeed be interested (in making a film). I can easily see myself as a cinematographer, maybe even a director. I remember working with Laszlo Kovacs, who did ‘Easy Rider’, on one of my early videos. “He had a glass round his neck and was constantly looking at the cloud formations waiting for the right light. The singer told Ramp Style magazine: “With smartphone cameras that can capture every moment, everyone can be a photographer. The future will be more interactive and intense, and there will be

more cameras documenting everything all the time. “Police body cameras have infrared capabilities to check your body temperature, there will be more drones... these are just some examples. That’s

La Liga: Getafe ends Madrid’s unbeaten streak

BARCELONA, JAN 3 (AGENCIES): After watching Real Madrid lose its first match in three months, Carlo Ancelotti had one simple message for his players: The holidays are over. Madrid’s run of 15 consecutive games without a loss in all competitions came to an end Sunday when it slumped to a 1-0 defeat at modest Getafe in the Spanish league after a nearly twoweek winter break. League leaders Madrid fell behind early when Getafe striker Enes Unal stole the ball from defender der Milito near the goal and beat Thibaut Courtois. Luka Modric’s shot off the woodwork in the first half was as close as Madrid got to an equalizer. Even though Madrid remained in control of the league with an eight-point lead over second-place Sevilla Ancelotti chastised his team for its attitude.

important exception of forward Vincius Jnior, who had been out due to COVID-19 Barcelona earned a 1-0 win at Mallorca with a team badly hit by the coronavirus. The absence of 10 first-team players gave the rarely used Luuk de Jong the chance to finally show his worth as a striker since he joined Barcelona on loan at the end of the summer transfer market as a bargain replacement for Antoine Griezmann.

Advisor Medo Yhokha along with others during the inaugural function of ZVYSO annual sports meet on January 3, 2022.

DIMAPUR, JAN 3 (NPN): The 60th anniversary of Zhadima Village Youth and Sports Organisation (ZVYSO) and week-long annual sports meet 2022 commenced Monday with advisor for technical education and elections Medo Yhokha gracing the inaugural session as the chief guest. Addressing the players from the eight khels and villagers at Zhadima village ground, Yhokha said that government jobs in the State have reached a saturation point, but maintained that the present government under leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio was making all efforts to promote sports in the State. He said the state government was working on improvised sports policy

and improving the sporting infrastructure in the State to provide opportunities for the young sporting talents. Lauding ZVYSO for creating a platform for sportspersons, Yhokha expressed hope that it would continue to provide an opportunity for the youngsters to compete in higher level of competitions. He said that participation and achieving medals at the village level sports should not be the end, but the target should be to conquer higher levels of competitions. Advisor, therefore, encouraged the sportspersons not to end their achievements at the village level but continue to seek the blessings of the elders and seniors to accomplish higher. “Let

us stop basking on the past glories but work to achieve greater heights in the present time,” he exhorted. Yhokha lauded chief minister Neiphiu Rio, who represents the 11 Northern Angami-II assembly constituency, for providing a stable government for which the people of the State are benefitting the fruits of development and progress. Later, Yhokha unfurled the ZVYSO flag and declared the week-long sports meet open. IPR deputy director & senior PRO Nagaland house New Delhi Kuolie Mere graced ZVYSO Naga Wrestling closing ceremony as the special guest. Mere also distributed the prizes to the winners of the 60th ZVYSO wrestling championship.

Madrid’s previous loss came on Oct. 3 when it fell 2-1 at Espanyol. Since then, it had won 13 and drawn two across all competitions. Ancelotti had steered Madrid to wins over Barcelona, Atltico Madrid, Sevilla and Inter Milan during its unbeaten run. But it was unable to rally after a mistake by Milito who tarnished his otherwise

excellent season with centerback partner David Alaba, with the pair filling the void left by the exits of veterans Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane. Toni Kroos appeared to have snuffed out Getafe’s attack when he recovered the ball and shuffled it over to Milito, but Unal pressured him hard and poked the ball clear before scoring in the ninth minute. Sometimes as a striker, you just sense that there can be something there. Luckily it worked out, Unal said about his goal that gave Getafe its first victory over its star-studded crosstown rivals since August 2012. Getafe started the season losing its first seven matches. But the modest club from a neighborhood of Madrid has turned things around in the league after Quique Snchez Flores took over in early October and is unbeaten in six rounds.

MELBOURNE, JAN 3 (AGENCIES): Australian Open boss Craig Tiley said Sunday there was still “quite a bit to play out” on whether Novak Djokovic will defend his title in Melbourne, with a clearer picture “in the coming days”. There is speculation that Djokovic has applied for one, which would be assessed by an independent panel of experts and remain confidential. Tiley said the clock was ticking.

“We’ve still got a few charter flights coming in until the end of this week and then all the players will be here,” he told the Nine Network. “As far as the status relates to Novak, I think we’ll have a much clearer picture in the coming days otherwise it’s getting pretty late to show up and play the Australian Open.” “There’s quite a bit to play out and I think it will play out in the coming days,” he added. Government officials in Victoria state, which hosts the Australian Open, have been adamant for months that only vaccinated players can play the tournament. “They’re the rules. 2nd Test: South Africa restrict India to 202

JOHANNESBURG, JAN 3 (IANS): Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen took South Africa to 35/1 at stumps and trailing India by 167 runs on day one of the second Test at the Wanderers on Monday. On a day that saw eleven wickets fall for 237 runs, South Africa kept themselves on top after a solid bowling performance, led by Marco Jansen’s 4/31, helped them restrict India to 202. After being bowled out for a modest score, Mohammed Shami gave India the first breakthrough as Aiden Markram was trapped plumb in front of the wicket. Shami got the ball to skid in from a good length and Markram tried to defend but was beaten and struck on the pads. Shami continued to trouble Elgar, beating and squaring him up on multiple occasions as Jasprit Bumrah kept the pressure up from the other end. Keegan Petersen collected two fours off Shami to get going. During the 18-over spell, Elgar and Petersen were beaten on multiple occasions but did well to survive. Bumrah almost had the wicket of Petersen if Rishabh Pant had caught a tough catch with his right glove. Elgar was beaten four times in an over by Mohammed Siraj. But an over before stumps, Siraj walked off midway from his over, clutching the right hamstring.

Earlier, stand-in skipper KL Rahul made a fighting fifty while Ravichandran Ashwin missed his half-century by four runs in a batting display where the middleorder, minus an injured Virat Kohli, failed to get going. Just like Centurion, India had won the toss and elected to bat first. But the similarities ended there as India got starts but couldn’t stitch a big partnership. The start of India’s innings was clearly split into two halves: 36/0 in the first hour and 17/3 in the second hour. Mayank Agarwal was more aggressive of the opening duo, driving Duanne Olivier for fours through cover and down the ground before giving the same treatment to Rabada.

A cautious Rahul survived a caught-behind appeal as a short ball from Olivier brushed his shoulder. South Africa took the review, thinking of the sound as outer edge, and burned it. Rahul replied with back-toback fours -- an on-drive and an outer edge through third man and gully. After drinks break, Agarwal fell while trying to drive a full ball from Marco Jansen and edged behind to keeper Kyle Verreynne. Cheteshwar Pujara was troubled by Ngidi, Rabada, and Olivier consistently bowling incoming deliveries, which kept short leg interested thrice. Ngidi bowled two maidens in his four-over spell, keeping the pressure on India.

Rahul continued to find a boundary each off Olivier and Rabada. But saw his partners go down in quick succession in the 24th over as Olivier sent back Pujara and Rahane on backto-back deliveries. Pujara’s forward defence resulted in extra bounce taking the shoulder edge of the bat to Temba Bavuma at gully. Next ball, Rahane steered a back of length delivery straight to Keegan Petersen at third slip. Hanuma Vihari was given a life at nine when Bavuma dropped a straightforward catch at point off Ngidi. Rahul and Vihari crunched five boundaries in the next six overs, with the stand-in captain’s drive through cover and latter’s slap over point being the standouts. But the solid 42run stand was brought to an end by Rabada, taking out Vihari at the stroke of drinks break. A short ball with extra bounce took an inner edge off Vihari’s bat to short leg, where Rassie van der Dussen dived to his left and put out his left hand to take a stunning catch. Rahul continued to march forward with a leaning drive through cover off Olivier and pulling Rabada through fine leg. He then brought up his half-century in 128 balls. But in the next over, Rahul attempted to pull a short ball from Jansen but the top-edge was caught by Rabada diving in from

fine leg. Ashwin and Pant build a stand of 40 runs for the sixth wicket, with the offspinner being the more aggressive of the two. But Jansen ended the partnership, taking out Pant with a delivery angled towards offstump and coming in to take the inner edge to Verreynne. In the next over, Olivier picked his third wicket as Shardul Thakur slapped away from the body straight to Petersen at gully. Ashwin continued to counter-attack, clipping Rabada through mid-wicket with the full face of the bat, and leaned forward to drive Olivier through mid-on. Shami cut Rabada solidly but drove straight back to the bowler, who completed a superb caught and bowled dismissal. Ashwin survived a chance at 44 when Bavuma almost pulled off a screamer at deep cover. But on the very next ball, Ashwin backed away to upper-cut a short ball from Jansen and miscued it completely to Petersen at point. Bumrah brought out the long handle to smash Rabada for 14 runs, including two fours and a six to take India past 200. Rabada then wrapped the Indian innings by strangling Siraj down leg. India will be aware they need to bounce back with the ball on day two to topple South Africa from pole position in the match.

ISL: Odisha FC outplay leaders Mumbai City in 6-goal thriller VA S C O DA G A M A (GOA), JAN 3 (IANS): Odisha FC registered an impressive 4-2 win over Mumbai City FC in the 2021-22 Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Tilak Maidan Stadium, here on Monday. Odisha FC’s Aridai Cabrera (4’) scored an early goal against the run of play but Mumbai City’s Ahmed Jahouh (11’) quickly brought the game on level terms with a superb finish. Igor Angulo (38’) then headed his team into the lead before Jerry Mawihmingthanga (70’, 77’) scored a memorable brace to hand the lead back to the Kalinga Warriors. Jonathas (89’) put the result beyond any doubt by scoring the fourth for Odisha FC. The result leaves Des Buckingham’s men winless in three games. Victory for Kiko Ram’rez’s men means that only three points separate them from the league leaders despite being in seventh place on the table. The match began at a rapid pace as Odisha FC scored an early goal. Mumbai City FC’s Mourtada Fall gave the ball away with an unforced error in his own half which led to Aridai Cabrera cutting inside from the left flank and unleashing a curling shot towards the far post. Mohammad Nawaz got both hands on the ball

and yet could not prevent the ball from rolling inside the net. A few minutes later, Ahmed Jahouh found the back of the net with a sensational curling shot from almost 25-yards out. The midfielder was fed by Cassio Gabriel with a perfectly weighted pass for the equaliser. Raynier Fernandes had a great opportunity to send his team into the lead at the half-hour mark but the midfielder miscued his header which went wide to his disappointment. However, it was Igor Angulo who finally gave the Islanders the lead with a precise header from a Jahouh free-kick. The second half also started on a fiery note as OFC began on the front foot. Moments after the hour mark, Sahil Tanwar missed an easy header to score the equaliser from 12-yards away after finding himself unmarked inside the

box. Ygor Catatau looked to have scored another goal from the bench but he was adjudged to be in an offside position. Within seconds on the other end, Jerry Mawihmingthanga scored his first goal of the season and equalised with a diving header at the far post. The winger then proceeded to score OFC’s third and stunned the league leaders with a powerful drive that went straight into the top corner from the right flank. To inflict more misery, Jerry turned provider by delivering a pinpoint cross for Jonathas who calmly placed his shot in the back of the net to score the fourth. A late-headed attempt from Catatau was saved by Kamaljit Singh from pointblank range who showed incredible reflexes to keep the Islanders at bay. The Kalinga Warriors held on to their lead and managed their fourth win of the season.

PKL 8: Bengal Warriors prevail over Pink Panthers Jaylen Brown scores 50 in Celtics’ OT win BENGALURU, JAN 3 (IANS): Captain Maninder Singh and all-rounder Mohammad Nabibakhsh helped the defending champions Bengal Warriors beat Jaipur Pink Panthers 31-28 in a closely contested match in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 8 at The Sheraton Grand Whitefield, here on Monday. Maninder scored 13 points while Nabibakhsh fetched 10, including a last-minute Super Tackle, to help Bengal overcome a stiff challenge from Jaipur. Arjun Deshwal was the sole performer for the Pink Panthers, clinching Super 10 and finishing the game with 16 points. But his failed attempt in the last raid of the match cost Jaipur a chance to win. Bengal and Jaipur went into the match with the worst tackle strike rates in the league and it wasn’t surprising to see the raiders dominate the early stages. Bengal captain Maninder Singh was in red-hot form with Mohammad Nabibakhsh supporting him. The two clinched successive multi-point raids in the 6th minute of the match to get Bengal their first all-out in the seventh minute and open a 5-point lead. At the other end, Arjun Deshwal was equally impressive in the pink jersey. His crucial points, especially in do-or-die raids, ensured Jaipur stayed within touching distance of the defending champions. Bengal led at the interval with scores 18-14. The second half was not a lot different for the raiders as both Maninder

Singh and Arjun Deshwal picked up their Super 10s. This was Arjun Deshwal’s 5th Super 10 in as many matches, but Jaipur failed to support him with captain Deepak Hooda not bringing his A-game to the mat. But the Pink Panthers smelled an opportunity when they Super Tackled Maninder Singh in the 9th minute. That was followed by a Yellow Card for defender Abozar Mighani for arguing with the referee. But Bengal kept producing important tackles to stay in the lead.

Going into the last five minutes they had a narrow three-point lead, but Jaipur tackled Maninder successfully to reduce that gap. But Mohammad Nabibakhsh immediately produced a 2-point raid. A last-minute failed tackle by the Warriors made it a 1-point game, but Nabibakhsh, the hero of Bengal in the Season 7 final, produced a stunning Super Tackle in the last raid of the match on Arjun Deshwal to clinch the match.

BOSTON, JAN 3 (AGENCIES); Jaylen Brown scored a career-high 50 points, rallying the Boston Celtics from 14 points down late in the fourth quarter to a 116-111 overtime victory over the Orlando Magic on Sunday night. Brown scored 21 in the fourth quarter, then opened OT with his fifth 3-pointer of the game. Brown, whose previous career high was 46 against the Knicks on Oct. 20, also finished with 11 rebounds as the Celtics avoided losing for the fourth time in five games. “We needed to win. No way we could have lost this game. It wouldn’t have been good,” said Brown, who made nine of 12 shots in the fourth quarter while leading the Celtics on a frenzied comeback. Marcus Smart added 17 points, seven assists and seven rebounds for the Celtics, who needed an 11-2 run down the stretch to force overtime. Dennis Schroder had 21 points and seven assists. “We let the game come to us,” Smart said. “It wasn’t pretty. It was a little ugly. But we came out with the win and that’s because we

kept our composure and we kept with it.” Terrence Ross scored 33 for the Magic, who outscored Boston 35-20 in the third quarter. They closed the period on a 20-4 run to take a 77-65 lead into the fourth and were ahead 9682 with a little more than 4 minutes remaining in regulation. “Everybody was just going extreme tonight. We were playing with a lot of energy, a lot of hustle,” Ross said. “Any time you play like that, you’re going to give yourself a good chance.” Shortly after missing the free throw on a three-

Man City’s ‘title to lose’ after Chelsea, Liverpool fall on their swords

LONDON, JAN 3 (AGENCIES): Even after a weekend in which Manchester City produced the worst performance of the Premier League’s top four, the champions streaked further clear towards a fourth title in five years. City manager Pe p Guardiola admitted his side were second best despite coming from behind to beat 10-man Arsenal 2-1 with a 93rd minute winner that secured an 11th consecutive league win. As Guardiola’s men have hit their stride, Chelsea and Liverpool have run out of steam to turn a tight three-horse race, into a procession. Struck down by coronavirus outbreaks and injuries, the two challengers for City’s crown threw themselves into a titanic battle at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but a 2-2 draw did little for either side’s hopes of reeling in the leaders. City’s advantage now

two-legged League Cup semi-finals over the next two midweeks despite calls from managers for the ties to be switched to one-off games. Chelsea’s record signing Romelu Lukaku was dropped for Sunday’s crucial clash after an explosive interview with Italian media in which he revealed his displeasure with how his first season back at the Bridge is going. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was also absent due to a Covid infection, along with Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip.

stands at 10 points from Chelsea, with Liverpool a further point back with a game in hand. “It’s a big gap, so they have the title maybe to lose at the moment,” said Liverpool de-

fender Virgil van Dijk, one of those forced into a swift return to action after testing positive for Covid-19. “We just have to get results, play good football and win games. It sounds pretty

easy but it’s tough.” Rather than cutting the gap, there is a likelihood it could grow in the coming weeks as Chelsea and Liverpool tackle their own issues. Both are involved in

to the AFCON, while first choice wing-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell face months out injured. “How should we compete in a title race?” Blues boss Thomas Tuchel complained earlier this week after his side were forced to fulfil all of their December fixtures, while 18 other Premier League games were called off due to Covid outbreaks. Even if Tuchel and Klopp’s men recovered their early season form, City’s relentless consistency shows no signs of offering a ray of hope. They have averaged a total of 95 points in each of Guardiola’s three titlewinning seasons in England and are on course to hit that mark again. “We showed our champion mentality, we never give up,” said midfielder Rodri after his late strike at the Emirates kept City’s winning run going.

point play attempt with 1:40 left, Brown drove for a layup to tie it at 98-all with 38 seconds to go. He added another layup that briefly put Boston up 100-98 with 30 seconds remaining, but Tim Frazier tied it up again and the game was decided in overtime. “We’ve just got to shake it off and learn from the situations that we were in, because we’ll find ourselves in more of these as the year goes on,” Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley said. Boston, which beat one of the top teams in the league Friday with a 123-108 win over Phoenix, couldn’t stop the lowly

Magic (8-29) two days later. Both teams were without their top scorers. Cole Anthony was out for the Magic with a sprained right ankle and Boston’s Jayson Tatum missed his fourth straight game after being placed on the COVID-19 health and safety protocols list last week. Gary Harris added 23 points and Wendell Carter Jr. finished with 15 points and 16 rebounds for Orlando. Frazier, who also scored 11 in the third, finished with 14 points. The Celtics led 45-42 at halftime despite committing 14 turnovers in the first half and nearly letting a 14-point lead vanish before the break. Frazier opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to tie it, starting the Magic on a roll that would put them up by as much as 14. “We got a little careless there. We were playing really fast and a little reckless at times and let them get back into the game, but overall we showed growth,” Boston coach Ime Udoka said. “We’ve lost quite a few of those this year and got out there defensively and got what we wanted towards the end of the game.”

Spain, Poland, Argentina win 2nd consecutive matches at ATP Cup

SYDNEY, JAN 3 (AP): Spain, Poland and Argentina remained perfect at the ATP Cup with 3-0 wins in their matches Monday, their second consecutive victories in the team event. Robert Bautista Agut clinched the match for Spain by beating Casper Ruud of Norway 6-4, 7-6 (4) after Pablo Carreno Busta defeated Viktor Durasovic 6-3, 6-3. Bautista Agut improved to 9-2 in singles at the team event. Kamil Majchrzak gave Poland the early lead over Georgia with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Aleksandre Bakshi before Hubert Hurkacz clinched it with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1 win over Aleksandre Metreveli. Argentina defeated Greece as Federtico Delbonis beat Michail Pervolorakis 7-6 (5), 6-1 and Diego Schwartzman came from

behind for a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3 victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas. The three sides then completed their victories by winning their doubles matches. Poland and Argentina will play for a pot in the semifinals when they meet in their final group game on Wednesday. Majchrzak needed only 53 minutes to beat Bakshi. Chile remained in contention for a semifinal place with a 2-1 victory over Serbia. Filip Krajinov put Serbia in front by beating Alejandro Tabilo 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) only for Chile to pull even when Dusan Lajovic retired in the third set of his match with Cristian Garin. That set up the deciding doubles match where Tabilo and Tomas Barrios Vera beat Nikola Cacic and Matej Sabanov 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.
