12 suspected Omicron cases in Delhi
NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (AGENCIES): Twelve suspected cases of Omicron have been admitted to hospitals in Delhi after they arrived on international flights over the past three days. Their samples have been sent for genome testing to confirm whether they are infected with the Omicron strain. All are at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) hospital in Delhi. Eight were hospitalised on Thursday after they tested positive for Covid. Four more were admitted on Friday but their Covid tests were not out yet. "Four are from the UK, four from France, some from Tanzania, one from Belgium. All are stable, only one has a fever," said Suresh Kumar, Medical Director, LNJP Hospital. He said samples have been sent for genome testing and whether any of them is Omicron-infected will be known in five or six days. "Genome sequencing is a lengthy and complicated

One of them is a 46-year-old fully vaccinated doctor from Bengaluru with no travel history. The other patient is a 66-year-old South African who came to India with a negative Covid report on November 20 and left for Dubai on a flight seven days later. The Karnataka government has filed a case alleging he "escaped" from a
hotel and took a flight out. The state is trying to track down 10 more people who reportedly went missing from the airport. "By tonight (Friday) all 10 people who have reportedly gone missing should be traced and they should be tested. Travelers will not be allowed to leave the airport until their report is out," Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashok said after a top-level meeting on Omicron. 30 foreign returnees untraceable in Andhra Pradesh: Andhra Pradesh administration is searching for 30 foreign returnees for

NPCC condemns attack on churches in K'taka DIMAPUR, DEC 3 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K Therie has condemned the alleged attack on churches by some Hindu organisations on December 1 in Karnataka. In a statement, Therie also condemned the alleged action by BJP’s organs and their attitude, and the Karnataka government for its reported bias and ill-will against the Christian community. According to Therie, since 2008, organisations like Bajrang Dal and Shri Ram Sena were attacking Christians and churches as per a plan. He said the attack on 14 churches within one hour in various places proved that this was premeditated. Referring to adoption of anti-conversion laws in BJP-ruled States,

He further alleged that there was persecution of Christians with police arresting pastor and locking him with devotees, even as sangh parivar activists barged inside churches singing bhajans. He accused the police of giving friendly warnings to Christians and

Centre anticipates severity of Omicron variant in India to be low NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (PTI/AGENCIES): The Centre on Friday said it anticipates the severity of the Omicron variant of coronavirus to be low in the country given the fast pace of vaccination and high exposure to the Delta variant, a day after the first two cases of the new variant was reported in Karnataka, and that a decision on a COVID vaccine booster dose will be on the basis of scientific guidance from experts. The Union Health Ministry, however, said the scientific evidence for the expected severity of the
disease is still evolving, as debates about the booster jabs heat up and several states ramp up testing and step up surveillance for the potentially more contagious variant. It also noted there is no evidence to suggest that existing vaccines do not work on the new variant that was reported by South Africa to the World Health Organisation (WHO) on November 24. In the Lok Sabha, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said RT-PCR tests have been conducted on 16,000 pas-
sengers from "at-risk" countries, of whom 18 have tested positive for COVID-19. The number of the positive cases is expected to be slightly more than 18 going by reports from states. Replying to an 11-hourlong debate on the COVID-19 pandemic, he said the swab samples of the affected passengers have been sent for genome sequencing to screen for the Omicron variant of the virus. Booster dose recommended for above 40: After several members had flagged the issue of booster doses of COVID vaccines
and had expressed concern over the new variant of the virus during the debate on Thursday, top Indian genome scientists recommended a booster dose of Covid-19 vaccines for those above 40 years with preference to high-risk and high-exposure population. According to PTI, the recommendation was made in the weekly bulletin of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Sequencing Consortium (INSACOG), a network of national testing labs set up by the government to monitor genomic variations of Covid-19.

Quoting media reports, Therie claimed that there was little evidence of forced conversion and pointed out that religion was an acceptance by an individual’s inner heart. He explained, “I believe God has created the
RK Singh during the meeting at Guwahati on Friday.
DIMAPUR, DEC 3 (NPN): Union power and new & renewable energy minister RK Singh on Friday said that the power scenario in the Northeast has developed tremendously in the past three-four years and almost all States in the region have managed to revamp their power system. “Today, the power system in the Northeast is very different than what it was
four years back,” he added. Addressing a meeting with power ministers and officials concerned of North Eastern states at Guwahati on Friday to discuss the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, Singh claimed that availability of power in the country, including Northeast, has gone up to an average of around 21 hours per day in rural areas and 23 hours in urban areas.
Singh claimed that the power sector witnessed tremendous growth in the past few years in areas of generation, transmission and distribution, adding that the objective was to give 24×7 power supply to every household in rural and urban areas of the country and make India a world leader in power production. Talking about the Revamped Distribution Scheme, Singh said that the scheme would help reduce the losses, even as he underlined that the increasing demand for electricity necessitated strengthening and modernisation of the distribution infrastructure. The meeting was attended by representatives of all apex frontal Rengma organisations– Rengma Students’ Union, Rengma Selo

NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (AGENCIES): Opposition MPs on Friday protested in Rajya Sabha after Bharatiya Janata Party legislator KJ Alphons sought to introduce a Bill to amend the Preamble to the Constitution, reported Deccan Herald. The Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2021, seeks to replace the word “socialist” with “equitable”, among other changes. Alphons has argued that the term “socialist” has “political connotations and carries a historical
baggage which is not acceptable to a large section of India”. Alphons, through the Bill, also wants the descriptions for equality and fraternity changed by enlarging its ambit and introducing “happiness, assuring a high gross domestic happiness” in the Preamble. The Bill seeks to change the words “Equality of status and of opportunity” to “Equality of status and of opportunity to be born, to be fed, to be educated, to get a job and to be treated with
dignity”, reported The Hindu. It also proposes adding “access to information technology” in the objectives of the Preamble. On Friday, after deputy chairperson Harivansh Narayan Singh allowed the introduction of the Bill following a voice vote, Opposition MPs claimed that he ignored their “no-es” in rejection that were more prominent than the “ayes” in support. Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Jha argued that the Bill needs the prior approval of the president before it is introduced. Singh, however, said the Bill does not need the president’s consent to be introduced and that the House would decide on the matter. “Preamble is part of the basic structure of the Constitution... “Please do not do this,” Jha said. Alphons then sought permission to speak on the Bill but the chairperson refused.
DIMAPUR, DEC 3 (NPN): Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) served a five-day ultimatum on Dimapur district administration effective from December 2 to crack down on night pubs/clubs, restaurants and hotels that were openly selling liquor on the pretext of running business. In a letter to Dimapur deputy commissioner (DC) Rajesh Soundarajan, union president A Kughato Achumi and general secretary X Hinoka Chophi regretted that there was no positive response from the former to their November 22 letter in this regard. They said they were dismayed over the administration’s lack of response, which had chosen to sleep over the issue despite knowing the ground reality, thereby shattering their high hopes and faith. In the light of the above, WSSU urged the DC to look into the matter on a priority basis and do the needful within a period of five days effective from December 2, failing which they warned that they would have no other option but to resort their own course of action for the welfare of student community and general populace.

Therefore, I have accepted Christ as my saviour and protector and His teachings as my religion. I have faith in Him that my prayers will be answered. I have faith that God will do everything right in His own time.” And by doing so, Therie asserted that no individual offended either any religion or the Constitution of India. He said every Christian that believed in Christ and had faith would surely admit that the Karnataka government was wrong. As a Christian State, he said it was shameful to have a government that was alien to persecution of Christians.

writers for coming out with creation from writing and reflection from unwritten literature and giving that to the Nagas and the world. He wished the festival a success and hopped that many more will follow. The Consul General also said that there could be a possibility of exchanges in literature with Max Mueller Bhavan in Kolkata. He also inaugurated the book corner, art exhibition and stall. Delivering keynote address, Easterine Kire said “we are still traversing the past, let us do it with great wisdom, we are the present and umbilically connected to our past and at this present time we are respectfully drawing lessons from our
past in order to hopefully engender a more understanding future”. She said that Nagas are writing ourselves, rewriting history by using a Naga centric lens to chronicle and set right the very misunderstood and misinterpreted past. Kire said that many books written by Naga researchers on tribal ways of life are precious as they give an inestimable documentation of Nagaland. She maintained that writing ourselves is an important movement of psychological, intellectual and emotional sovereignty. Kire said “As we write ourselves, we are interrogating, resisting and blasting stereotypes”. She pointed
out that Nagas have had many stereotypical images written down and this is a dangerous trend. She said that there were instances of colonial stereotyping which paved the way for Indian administrators’, mainstream media and non-Naga researchers to construct Naga identity which was far from the truth. Kire said “On the other hand, we have to be grateful for the first writings since we depended on oral narratives passed on from generations”. She further stated that narratives were silenced and interrupted on many points. Urging writers to take over and find out what was correct and incorrect in the representation of the Nagas, Kire said they have started retrieving their past and not as how it was defined by others. She further cautioned on not to be dictated by cultural thieves but to resist by writing themselves by putting back values on what has been devalued The gathering was enthralled through a song “Kelhou Kevira” by Petsüsetuo Liezietsu and Khrieyie Belho. Spoken word was presented by Christina Suohu and Marüni Kadete.

G U WA H AT I , D E C 3 (IANS): One more militant outfit, the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), once active in Assam and West Bengal, has made peace overtures to the government, an official said on Friday. A senior Assam government official, refusing to disclose the details of the KLO’s proposals, has indicated that the outfit, which operates from Myanmar, has recently sent feelers to the government willing to start peace talks. “The matter is now at the initial stage. The Assam government is in touch
with the Centre about the KLO’s peace proposals,” said the official, refusing to be identified. He said that after the Bangladesh security forces had started counter-insurgency operations against the militant outfits of northeast India including United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent, the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the KLO, most cadres of these outfits took shelter in neighbouring Myanmar. “After the ULFA-I last month extended their unilateral ceasefire for another three months, the KLO’s peace proposal is a very
positive development,” the official said. About the KLO’s proposal, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had tweeted: “In Continuation with Govt of India’s efforts to bring lasting peace in the region, I welcome the desire of KLO leadership to join mainstream at an early date to resolve all issues through political dialogues. Govt of Assam would fully reciprocate this goodwill measure.” Besides the ULFA-I and the KLO, several other extremist outfits in Nagaland, Manipur, and Meghalaya are in a peace mode. The KLO, which had came into existence in 1995, has been demanding to carve out a separate Kamtapur state comprising six districts -- Cooch Behar (or Koch Bihar), Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, North and South Dinajpur, and Malda of West Bengal and four adjoining districts of western Assam -- Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, and Goalpara.

High Court directs M’laya not to implement entry, exit regulations S H I L L O N G, D E C 3 (PTI): The High Court of Meghalaya has directed the state government not to implement its entry and exit regulations for outsiders into the state. The state government has set up several check gates across the state under the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016, which made it mandatory for non-residents to register at the check gates. Although the state government referred to Article 19(5) of the Constitution while drawing up the Act, the grounds on which entry to or movement within the state may be regulated have not been spelt out in the impugned statute or any rules framed thereunder, a Division Bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice W Diengdoh observed on Thursday. Article 19(5) grants the government the power to impose reasonable restrictions upon the freedom to move freely throughout the territory of India and the freedom to reside or settle in any part of the territory of the country in the interest of the general public or the
protection of the interests of any Scheduled Tribe. “The challenge here is to the validity of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016 and the possible draconian manner in which it may be implemented as appropriately apprehended by the petitioners,” the order said. In her petition, Ibanhunlang Nongkynrih had submitted that the gates have been set up at several points for checks to be conducted on persons seeking to enter the state without any objective parameters being set down for denying entry or regulating the movement of any citizen of the country in the state. The petitioner had also said that such check-posts may be “impermissible” and the exercise of authority thereat may be “wholly arbitrary”. “It is made clear that the apparent omnibus charter conferred by the impugned statute without indicating any parameters for restricting or regulating the entry or movement of Indian citizens into and within the state may be not exercised,” it said. .
the objective to reduce cost in HIV programming. However, in the context of Manipur, it is not clear as to why this modal is to be initiated, he said alleging that people do not come to ART centres due to fear of stigma and discrimination. “If the government breaks all confidentiality of a patient and provides ART to them at their doorsteps when they are reluctant to come to ART centres for fear of discrimination and stigma, the initiative will generate more stigma and discrimination,” he asked He stressed the need to take consent of the patient before delivering the ART at the doorstep as consent was the main focus area of the HIV AIDS Act. “If the government breaks the confidentiality of a patient, the consequences will be harsh,” he cautioned. At the same time, the state government must not take the step hastily. The state government should
have a series of meetings involving all stakeholders including the community before initiating the doorstep delivery of ART medicines, he suggested. “If we need to end HIV & AIDS, we need to end inequalities and inequalities is nothing but the stigma and discrimination associated with the disease,” he said. If the HIV services were to be improved, stigma and discrimination should be addressed first, he added. He also urged the state government to materialize and strengthen the Ombudsman appointed on November 8, 2021, asserting that the Ombudsman will play a pivotal role in reducing stigma and discrimination among the PLHIVs. The CoNE president observed that many were dying of advanced HIV diseases (AHD) despite the considerable progress in providing HIV care and treatment to people living with HIV.

IMPHAL, DEC 3: An NGO working for the people living with HID/AIDS was apprehensive of the generation of more stigma and discrimination by the doorstep ART medicine delivery initiative of Manipur government. On World AIDS Day, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh had earlier announced that the government will start doorstep delivery of ART medicines from the current month (December). Reacting to the initiative of the government, Community Network for Empowerment (CoNE) on Friday expressed strong apprehension that the initiative will generate more stigma and discrimination. Addressing a press conference at its office in Imphal today, CoNE president RK Nalinikanta suggested the state government to take prior consent of the
beneficiaries or consult with NGOs working for people living with HID/AIDS. “We welcomed the government initiative. However, it is not clear as to why this modal is to be initiated leaving behind other priorities to be made by the government,” he said. He added that there were other priorities to be made at this point of time instead of delivering ART medicines at the doorsteps of PLHIVs. He urged the state government to resolve the problem of routine investigations at healthcare facilities, regular breakdown of CD machines and irregularity in its functioning, and most importantly the issue of disruption in viral load testing of PLHIVs. He admitted that the doorstep delivery of ART medicines is now being promoted by WHO and UNAIDS globally and is a model known as Differentiated Service Delivery (DSD) modal with

Manipur students protest fare hike, clash with police leges as they are unable to bear the fare. The students displayed placards with slogans and their protest led to disruption of normal traffic along the busy state highway. Police who rushed to the spot tried to convince protesting students not to block the traffic. As they refused to comply, the police had to use force to disperse them. An altercation also broke out which was diffused by the womenfolk of the area and they prevented police from further using force on the students. A girl student who took part in the agitation fainted in the altercation and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. The agitating students strongly condemned a male police personnel who allegedly took action against female students. A leader of the students, talking to the media during the agitation, said many students were not able to attend classes as passenger vehicles were fixing exorbitant fares at
their own will as if there were no authority to fix the passenger fares. They also defied the order of the government to limit the number of passengers to only 50 per cent of the seat capacity in view of the Covid pandemic, he further alleged. The students further demanded abolition of the non-performing state transport department, stating that the officials of the department were not ready to address the grievances of the public despite the hue and cry over the unprecedented fare hike. They also drew the attention of the state education government to make an arrangement for the students with regard to fare and for the students from remote areas who could not attend classes due to the hike in passenger fare. Many students from the remote areas could not attend schools or colleges due to fare hike coupled with suspension of services of inter-district buses, they said.

SHILLONG, DEC 3: The opposition Congress in Meghalaya on Friday suffered yet another jolt with the mass resignation of Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) members. At least 400 youth Congress workers led by its General Secretary, Fernandez S Dkhar quit the party by submitting their resignation at the Congress Bhavan here. Dkhar accused the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee led by its president Vincent Pala of neglecting MPYC members. He said the State Congress and AICC acted in an arbitrary manner by dissolving the present body of the MPYC before the election to elect the new members. Dkhar said that by convention the old body
continues to run the affairs of youth members of the party till the new body is constituted through an election. However, he said that convention was not followed and the Pradesh Congress and the AICC acted without consultation and dissolved the present body before the election. “At present, we have here around 400 members from across the state who have resigned from the party, “ he added. The resignation of these youth Congress members comes after the merger of 12 rebel Congress legislators , led by former Chief Mukul Sangma, with the Trinamool Congress. Meanwhile, Dkhar has not said which party these members would join following their resignation. However, it’s most likely that they would join the TMC.

Bills for 5 year tenures for CBI, ED chiefs in Lok Sabha
NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (PTI): Two bills were introduced in the Lok Sabha on Friday to extend the tenures of Directors of the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate up to a maximum of five years from the present two years amid strong protests from opposition members. The Central Vigilance Commission (Amendment) Bill and the Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Bill were introduced in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh to limit the tenures of Directors of the CBI and ED to maximum five years respectively. The two bills seek to replace Ordinances issued during the intersession period. Opposing the introduction of the two bills, Congress member Shashi Tharoor said the move to extend the tenures of the directors of central investigative agencies were in “flagrant disregard” of the Supreme Court observations. Tharoor said the apex Court had observed
that extension of tenure granted to officers who have attained the age of superannuation should be done only in rare and exceptional cases and the gover nment move was “malafide”. Trinamool member Saugata Roy opposed the move contending that both the ED and CBI were two arms of the government used to harass opposition leaders. Congress members K Suresh, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhur y and RSP member N K Premachandran also opposed the introduction of the bill. The members said piecemeal extensions would lead to officers’ loyalty to the government. Seeking to allay the apprehensions of the opposition members, Jitendra Singh said the earlier laws only fixed minimum limit on the tenures of Directors of CBI and ED. “The earlier laws never put any limit on the tenures, we are limiting it to five years,” Singh said. The minister said the Ordinances were necessitated as Parliament

People will teach the BJP government a lesson: Gehlot
NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (PTI): The BJP on Friday mounted counter-protests outside Parliament where 12 suspended opposition members of Rajya Sabha were on a sit-in demonstration against the action on them. There were some tense moments as BJP members, carrying placards, marched towards the opposition members near the Gandhi statue in Parliament premises to condemn their “undemocratic actions” inside the House. “We are here to highlight the duplicity of the opposition parties,” BJP member G V L Narsimha Rao said. The issue also figured in both houses of Parliament when opposition leaders complained about “hooting” by BJP members to the presiding officers. In Rajya Sabha, RJD MP Manoj Jha said BJP members “gatecrashed” the site in Parliament complex where the 12 suspended members were staging a demonstration.
Ashok Gehlot JAIPUR, DEC 3 (PTI): Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday accused the Centre of not paying attention to the problems of the people saying they would teach it a lesson in times to come. He also said that Congress’ ‘Mahagai Hatao Rally’ scheduled on December 12 will be successful. “The Centre is not even listening to the problems of countrymen, whether it is inflation that’s troubling the common man, or something related to farmers, they don’t care at all,” Gehlot told reporters after visiting the rally site in Vidhyadhar Nagar here. BJP govt has left behind British in terms of atrocities: Akhilesh
Akhilesh Yadav JHANSI (UP), DEC 3 (PTI): Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday alleged that the BJP’s policy is “kill and rule” and its government has left behind the British in terms of atrocities on people. Yadav, who is on a three-day visit to the Bundelkhand region, said that every section of the society is troubled under the BJP rule. “This government has left behind the British in terms of atrocities. Farmers are crushed to death by vehicles for opposing the government and no concrete action has been taken in the (Lakhimpur Kheri) matter so far. Those who oppose are being put in jail. Their policy is ‘maro aur raj karo’ (kill and rule),” he told a press conference here. “There has been a rise in fake encounters under this government. For this, the
BJP government has got the maximum number of notices from NHRC (National Human Rights Commission). What can be expected from a chief minister who withdraws cases against himself,” Yadav said, targeting Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The SP chief is touring Uttar Pradesh with his “Samajwadi Vijay Rath” ahead of the assembly polls early next year. He said the people of Bundelkhand gave their full support to the BJP in the past elections but now they have understood their gimmicks. Now the people of Bundelkhand have made up their minds to send the BJP empty-handed from the region, he added. Yadav said his party’s ‘Vajay Rath’ yatra was getting full support form the people. During the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown, barricades were put up on the state’s border to prevent labourers from returning home, he alleged. “That time, the government had left the poor helpless and only samajwadis helped them then,” he said. He alleged that the BJP, instead of doing anything concrete on its own, turned to changing names of projects and works done during the previous regime.

The Directors of CBI and ED enjoy a fixed tenure of two years from the date of their appointment in the wake of the directives of the Supreme Court in the famous Vineet Narain case. The ED Director is appointed by the central government on the recommendation of a committee chaired by the Central Vigilance Commissioner and members comprising of Vigilance Commissioners, Home Secretary, Secretary DOPT and Revenue Secretary. The Director CBI is selected on the basis of the recommendation of a committee consisting of the Prime Minister, the Chief of Justice of India and the Leader of Opposition. arrogance. People will teach them a lesson in the times to come.” He said it was unfortunate that the party was not given permission to hold a rally in the national capital. “Inflation remains an issue across the country. Why was permission not given to the proposed rally? It only would have represented the sentiments of the entire country,” Gehlot said. The AICC has called for a ‘Mahagai Hatao Rally’ on December 12 against the rising inflation in the country, which will be held in Jaipur instead of New Delhi now. To oversee the preparations for the rally, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal and state in-charge Ajay Maken reached here on Friday. The Congress leaders accompanied Gehlot to the proposed rally site. Gehlot thanked party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi for choosing Jaipur for this rally and said people from all over the state and country will come to this rally to make it a success.

‘No proposal for banning any group named NSO Group’ NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (PTI): The government on Friday said there is no proposal to ban any group named ‘NSO Group’ and it does not have any information on whether the US has blacklisted the group for providing Pegasus spyware. Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar was responding to a written question in Rajya Sabha on banning of NSO Group. On whether the US has blacklisted NSO Group and Candiru for providing Pegasus spyware that was allegedly used to maliciously target journalists, embassy workers and activists, he said: “No such information is available in this ministry”. To a question on whether the ministry has also banned the NSO Group in India, Chandrasekhar said: “There is no proposal for banning any group named ‘NSO Group’ “. Earlier this year, a row erupted over Israeli spyware Pegasus allegedly being used for targeted surveillance in India. In October, the Supreme Court set up a three-member independent expert panel to
Rajeev Chandrasekhar probe the alleged use of the spyware for targeted surveillance in India. The apex court had also observed that the state cannot get a ‘’free pass’’ every time the spectre of national security is raised and that its mere invocation cannot render the judiciary a ‘’mute spectator’’ and be the bugbear it shies away from. Responding to another question, the minister said the government is well aware of the risk and danger posed by growing phenomena of misuse of various media platform and the user harms caused as a consequence by criminals and anti-national elements. “Gover nment has taken appropriate steps to address the challenges of misuse of social media,” he said.

Kangana’s car waylaid by protesting farmers in Punjab
CHANDIGARH, DEC 3 (IANS): The car of actress Kangana Ranaut was stopped and surrounded by protesting farmers in Punjab’s Kiratpur Sahib town on Friday, demanding an apology from her for comments against the women farmers. The incident took place close to Bunga Sahib gurdwara on the Chandigarh-Una highway. She was travelling from Manali to Chandigarh to board a flight to Mumbai. Video footage showed the farmers carrying their organization flags surrounded the Mercedes car and demanded an apology from her. Police personnel were also seen there, convincing the protesters to clear the road. In the video, the actress said, “I have left from Himachal and arrived in Punjab because my flight was cancelled. My car has been sur-
rounded by a mob who are calling themselves farmers and are attacking me. They are hurling abuses at me and threatening to kill me.” “In this country this kind of mob lynching is happening openly, if I didn’t have security then what would have happened? The situation is unbelievable. If the cops wouldn’t have been here then they would be lynching openly. Shame on these people!” In another video, Kangana was seen interacting with a woman from the crowd and holding her hand. “I am completely safe and have left from there. Thanks to Punjab police and CRPF,” she added. Kangana was disappointed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the government is scrapping the three controversial farm laws.
Cong in ‘deep freezer’, oppn wants Mamata to lead: TMC
Will vote against BJP if not given OBC status: Malik
KOLKATA, DEC 3 (PTI): Amid the ongoing war of words between the TMC and the Congress, the ruling camp in West Bengal on Friday launched a fresh attack on the grand old party, stating that it has gone into a “deep freezer” with opposition forces now looking up to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to fill the vacuum. The TMC, which had been inducting disgruntled Congress leaders in its fold, iterated in its mouthpiece ‘Jago Bangla’ that it was committed to fight the BJP. Referring to Prashant Kishor’s latest tweet against the Congress, the article said it’s not just the poll strategist but also Congress leaders themselves who are criticising the party leadership. “The TMC has been saying this for a long time that the Congress is a spent force. They don’t have the zeal to fight the BJP. The party is so bogged down by infighting that it hardly has time or energy to build an opposition. The UPA does
M AT H U R A , D E C 3 (PTI): The Akhil Bhartiya Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti has said it will call for voting against the BJP if its demand to include Jats in the OBC category is not met before the UP assembly elections. “A call, ‘No Vote to BJP’, will be given during the Vidhan Sabha elections if assurances made by union leaders, including the Prime Minister, are not fulfilled shortly,” samiti national president Yashpal Malik on Thursday said. He said they will appeal to people to not vote for the BJP in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab elections if Jats are not included in the said category. Malik claimed that the community was assured of reservation at central level under the Other Backward Communities (OBC) category by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 26, 2015.
not exist,” the article titled ‘Congress in deep freezer’ said. “The country currently needs an alternative front and opposition parties have given that responsibility to Mamata Banerjee. They are looking up to her to fill the vacuum. She is presently the most popular opposition face in the country,” it said. Kishor, on Thursday, took to Twitter and said that Congress’ leadership is not the “divine right” of an individual, especially when the party has “lost more than 90% elections in last 10 years”, in an apparent dig at senior leader Rahul Gandhi. Banerjee during her recent visit to Mumbai had said that “UPA doesn’t exist”. The ruling camp of West Bengal, which is trying to expand its footprint nationally, has been up in arms against the grand old party over its alleged failure to counter the BJP. In a massive jolt to the opposition Congress in Megha-
laya, 12 of its 17 MLAs, led by former chief minister Mukul Sangma, joined the TMC last week. The TMC, in its bid to enter Tripura’s political arena in a big way, recently engaged in a bitter battle with the BJP during the municipal elections there. It is also gearing up to contest the assembly elections in Goa to pitch Banerjee firmly as the foremost antiBJP opposition voice. Earlier, the TMC, in its mouthpiece, had termed the
Congress as an “incapable and incompetent” party, and maintained that the Mamata Banerjee-led camp cannot be blamed for Congress leaders jumping ship. The ties between the Congress and the TMC got further strained after ‘Jago Bangla’ recently claimed that party supremo Mamata Banerjee, and not Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, has emerged as the face of the opposition against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Antilia bomb scare case: Naresh Gaur moves Bombay HC MUMBAI, DEC 3 (PTI): Cricket bookie Naresh Gaur arrested in the Antilia bomb scare case has approached the Bombay High Court challenging a special court’s order last month granting him bail, which was later stayed for 25 days. The NIA arrested Gaur in March this year, accusing him of being involved in the Antilia bomb scare case and in the killing of businessman Mansukh Hiran. On November 20, a special NIA court granted him bail after observing that prima facie, he did not seem to be aware of the conspiracy. Gaur was the first accused in the case to be granted bail. The special court, however, stayed its own order for 25 days after the prosecution requested for the same saying it wished to challenge the grant of bail before an appellate court. Gaur then approached the High Court through his counsel Aniket Nikam, challenging the stay the special court had granted on his bail order. In his plea, Gaur has stated that the special court had granted him bail after observing that he did not have a role in the conspiracy to kill Hiran or the Antilia bomb scare case.

OPINION/EDITORIAL
Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 2 DIMAPUR, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2021
W
More for less
hat state chief minister Neiphiu Rio had said in his address on the occasion of the 59th Nagaland statehood day in Kohima on December 3,2021, could be understood in various ways. The chief minister acknowledged that despite much achievements made in Nagaland since statehood in 1963, much still remained to be done(or achieved). Having thus said so, the chief minister assured that, the government is committed to take necessary steps for all-round development of Nagaland so as to ensure that people are provided with the best of opportunities for growth and progress. He said Nagaland has achieved considerable progress in the field of education (literacy from 42% in 1963 to 80% at present), health (Three main district hospitals at Kohima, Mokokchung and Tuensang to presently 11 major district and two TB hospitals, 21 CHCs, 123 PHCs and 398 Sub Centres); and road (from around 1000 kms in 1963 to around 14,000 kms today). However, in power, Nagaland is till dependent on import as its demand during peak hours falls below 80% of its requirement. It may be also pointed out that the annual budget of the state has been high with regard to the quantum of central assistance as well as the grant-in-aid component till 1989 which had then, made the state cent per cent centrally funded. The annual budget of the state since the regional parties-NPF and NDPPformed their respective governments since 2003 will reflect the law of diminishing returns. The state’s annual budget rose significantly from an average of Rs.2000 crore to Rs,4000 crore and ultimately to Rs.22,816.61 cr for 2021-22. On an average since 2003 the average annual budget for Nagaland is approximately Rs.9000 to 10,000 crore. Government has focussed on construction of palatial office buildings, bridges, indoor stadiums, guest houses, VVIP residences, town halls, multi-utility centres, school buildings, road projects, huge subsidies for farmers undertaking various activities, assistance to several thousand entrepreneurs estimated at a total of around several hundred crore rupees, tourism amenities and facilities etc. The list is indeed impressive and indicates that no project that is implementable as per central scheme, has been left out in Nagaland. All the projects worth a few lakh crore rupees taken up since 2003 should have brought about a major transformation to the economy. So if much is still left to be desired, as had been said, then there are several questions that are raised. Whether it means that more projects, are needed to satisfy the state’s rulers and bureaucrats? The most important need and perhaps which remains unfulfilled for decades, is effective governance. That is a reason why construction projects in Nagaland fall behind schedule and inversely costs escalate many times. A project estimated at Rs.5 crore will eventually jump to nearly Rs.35 crore after five years. There is no accountability fixed on who should be held responsible, but rather such delays translate to additional fund since delayed projects serve as the golden goose for politicians, technocrats and bureaucrats. The huge central funds have been cornered by a privileged few and widened the economic divide. Instead of good governance, the focus for nearly 20 years has consistently been on solution to the Naga political issue. This can also unintentionally mean the issue is responsible for the ills.
DailyDevotion “Not by Might nor by Power” My speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power… —1 Corinthians 2:4
If in preaching the gospel you substitute your knowledge of the way of salvation for confidence in the power of the gospel, you hinder people from getting to reality. Take care to see while you proclaim your knowledge of the way of salvation, that you yourself are rooted and grounded by faith in God. Never rely on the clearness of your presentation, but as you give your explanation make sure that you are relying on the Holy Spirit. Rely on the certainty of God’s redemptive power, and He will create His own life in people. Once you are rooted in reality, nothing can shake you. If your faith is in experiences, anything that happens is likely to upset that faith. But nothing can ever change God or the reality of redemption. Base your faith on that, and you are as eternally secure as God Himself. Once you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you will never be moved again. That is the meaning of sanctification. God disapproves of our human efforts to cling to the concept that sanctification is merely an experience, while forgetting that even our sanctification must also be sanctified (see John 17:19). I must deliberately give my sanctified life to God for His service, so that He can use me as His hands and His feet.

Post-mortem
Students protest over offline examinations in Nagaland
T
he Covid 19 pandemic and its impact are observed in every sector around the world. It has compelled the maintenance of social distancing in every sector leading to panic and disruptions across the world. The education sector was also not spared and was badly affected by the pandemic in India as well as all over the world. As a result, Education has changed enormously with a transition for the students as well as teachers to online teaching-learning. With the easing of various restrictions in Nagaland, educational institutions have started opting for offline classes with approval from the State Government. In the wake of this transition from online to offline and the decision to conduct offline examinations for the colleges in the state by Nagaland University(NU), there has been some unrest among a certain section of the students demanding online examinations. This unrest among the students led to the protest against the decision of conducting offline exams out in the streets of Dimapur, Mokokchung, and Longleng on 25th -26th November 2021. The street protest
C
by students in Dimapur raised the Slogan “What started online should end online”. The student protestors in Dimapur submitted a representation to the DC of Dimapur which was to be forwarded to the ViceChancellor of Nagaland University. The representation claimed to represent “Students of All Nagaland College” which has justified the demand for online examination where they demanded that the examination should either be online or postponed. It justified that conducting offline examination compromises the safety of the students as well as the teachers as they’re also required to be present for spot marking. It also alleged that the standard of online teaching and assignments were below par where all these reasons violate articles 14 and 21 of the Indian constitution as per the representation. This demand and protest by the college students till the day has received various mixed opinions. The Dimapur Naga Student Union (DNSU) declared its stance on the protest held by the students against the offline mode of examination and stated that online examination should not be
endorsed for the benefit of the student community in the state at the moment. Also, it was said that due to continuous lockdown most of the colleges failed with the coverage of the syllabus and therefore wished the NU to consider a decrease in the syllabus. The Nagaland State Unit of National Students’Union of India(NSUI), the student wing of Congress Party said that that the best option for quality education was the offline mode of examination. But at the same time, it could not turn a blind eye to what’s happening around us. It was also stated that the exam routine has been announced on short notice leaving the students unaware. The union also appealed to the NU Authorities to access the situation and listen to the grievance of the students. The Nagaland College Principe Association (NCPA) stated that a massive majority of the students opted for offline examination in the student’s Assessment in the college. In this regard, The NCPA affirmed to stand firm with Nagaland University over its decision. All Nagaland College Students Union (ANSCU) in a press
note, has stated that it disowns the improper gathering of students protesting without the consent and approval of the ANSCU and has also expressed concerns over no or fewer gaps between exam dates. It has also condemned the high-handedness of police personal against the students in uniforms and that they should be penalized as per law. The Private Colleges Association Nagaland (PCAN) expressed apprehension over what turned as the most unexpected protest by some misguided students. It has further stated that the members fully endorse offline exams and in the time frame of the present routine noticed by Nagaland University. The protesting students who claimed to represent Students of All College could not be justified as the protest did not happen in all the districts of the state and also various student unions from different respective colleges have renounced taking part in the protest. Also, The All Nagaland Students Union (ANSU) which represents all the colleges in the state did not endorse the protest which questions the validity of the claim that
it represents students of all colleges. Further, the Controller of Examinations Nagaland University has justified against the allegations of sudden announcement of exam routines as it has been updated in October. The complaints of the students of various issues like connectivity, incomplete syllabus, limited class times could have been further justified if it has been brought to light if not in the wake of the examination. Though the recent demand of the students for online exams isn’t justified there exist some drawbacks from the other party too on how classes have been conducted and the various limitations it comes with online classes especially in the state of Nagaland where internet connectivity is a major issue. With the advancement in technology and its advancement in the teaching-learning process especially during the time of the pandemic, online teaching has gained more positives than negatives but the same cannot be applicable in Nagaland due to its poor connectivity issues and its lack of proper infrastructure. The lack of advancement in technology for conducting exams on-
line, in the state also gives rise to the chance of malpractices by the students during their exams thus leading to the reduction of quality education in the state. In a highly competitive world where quality education is projected as the main ingredient in a student’s life, it is very important to not compromise on the quality of education imparted. Though certain demands and grievances are understandable it is also important to note that the topmost priority of an educational institution is to impart quality education and that exams are conducted not for the sake of it but to identify talents, give values, extraordinary thinking, and to clarify and rectify various shortcomings which play a very important role in a students future thus its very important to deal diligently with various grievances but not at the cost of quality education. 1. Christmas Celebration
hristmas is celebrated throughout the World. But there is a lot of confusion about the true meaning of the festive season. Everybody wants to be happy and joyous. If you ask anyone of them, why they are happy? Every body has their own reason for the happiness. Some are happy for family reunion, restoration of friendship, fresh clothes, plenty of good food, and commercial expansion. At this time of Covid--19 (Corona Virus) pandemic, people are searching for personal profit devoid of their health. Pharmaceutical industries are trying to be the first to find a vaccine in order to dominate the World market. We are living in a modern World but exactly like the people in the days of “Babel.” (Let us make ourselves a name. (Gen. 11:4) This is the tragedy of a fallen World in which we live. For us, as believers in Jesus Christ, we must enter into a deeper understanding of the purpose of God. If we read the events that took place in the beginning of the Book of Genesis, God created everything. The Crown of His creation was man. He was formed from something which God had already created. Out of the dust of the Earth, was man formed and breathed His breath of life for a specific purpose. (Gen.2:7) He was to take full control and to take care of all God’s creation and rule over them. “Care” means to “love”. Gen.2:15. He was to be the “Steward” of God’s creation. We do not know how long this harmonious atmosphere lasted. The Devil, as the master of deception, deceived Adam and Eve. And this harmonious relationship with God was destroyed. Man relinquished his responsibility and handed over to the Devil. God therefore began a salvage operation to restore the original intent of creation. In Genesis chapter 3, verse 15, “and I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall bruise you on the head
and you shall bruise him on the feet.” This is termed as proto-evangel, which means the beginning of evangelism that we are all familiar in our mission vocabulary. The entire narrative of the Bible is one threat of the seed of the Woman which culminated with the coming of Christ into the World. Adam to Noah to Abraham, the Judges, and the kings to David. When, Mathew wrote the gospel, he began with the genealogy of Jesus from Abraham and David the king, to Jesus Christ. The Prophets thundered on the people of Israel for their disobedience but sincerely went on reminding them of the coming of their Messiah. The count- down of the exact time began in the reign of king Darius of the Mede-Persian king. (Dan.9:1). Cyrus the king of the united kingdom of Mede-Persian kingdom released the Exiles to go back to their homeland..All the preparation to receive the Messiah,(Anointed) was made. The Temple was reconstructed, the city wall was completed for the reception of the Redeemer. Alexander the great made, Greek language lingua franca of his Empire. After him the Romans came and imposed Roman justice. In our modern World “justice” has become “Just us”. Communication was constructed throughout the Empire and the roads were made safe for all travellers. Pax- Romana (Roman Peace) was enjoyed by the people. At a time like this, the time for the birth of Jesus Christ arrived. The time and of the coming of the Messiah ,revealed to Daniel was accomplished. “So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there will be seven weeks and sixty two weeks; it will rebuild again with plaza and moat; even in times of distress”.(Dan.9:25)He was conceived supernaturaly. The Hebrew people rejected their Messiah by crucifying Him but rose again on the
third day. The Messiah was thus cut off from them. (Dan.9:26) The Age of Grace, the Church AGE. After the end of this mystery Age,(Church) the Messiah will return. The trumpet sound for the rapture of the Church is knocking at the door. Just because the celebration of Christmas has been compromised by the World, some of the Christian denominations refuse to celebrate it. Personally I feel, it is right for us to celebrate it. We have already seen the historical evidence of the genealogy of Jesus Christ.(Matt.1:1) A king must traced his family line of succession. But, what about the theology of Christmas? Our entire purpose for the celebration; rests on this .For this, let us go back to Philippines chapter 2. From verse 6 “Who, being in very nature God”. “Being,” means all the attributes of God. “Did not consider equality with God” tells us that He gave up His rights of His attributes. He did not abandon His attributes. He remained Eternal God. He retained His identity but surrendered His will to His Father God. He became in the likeness of man, humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even the death on the cross. He is fully man and fully God. Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name. And every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. Those, who were dead and we, who are still on earth and even those, who are in Hell will bow down to Him. (Ps.76:10) His name is now “Lord”. What we have already said as above was fulfilled exactly on the ground. After the supernatural conception, the foetus followed as normal process of human pregnancy to its full term. Joseph and the full term pregnant, Mary had to travel to the City of David for four days on the rocky path of the Judean Hill. They travelled under the safety of a Roman road.
In Bethlehem, He was born in a stable; delivery was just like the birth of a slave. He grew up in a normal rural home. Learned the family trade, as a carpenter. Live with the rural society. Experienced hunger, thirst, tired physically like any other human being. Experienced human emotion; wept for Lazarus death, wept for the impending destruction of
the city of Jerusalem. He was numbered among us. His name was registered in the census of the Roman Empire. If He was in our modern World, He must have been registered in the Electoral roll for political election.. He is Immanuel. (God with us). He went through the physical torture on the Cross. Died, buried but
rose again on the third day. When He ascended to heaven, He was given a name above all names, “Lord”. The birth day of somebody like in the person of Jesus Christ, deserves celebration. Let us therefore, focus our attention to Him alone. Let us not be carried away by the world, however attractive it may be.. Merry Christmas to you all. Amen. Dr. L. M. Murry
Reader’s Post Sir,
Nagaland Post 31-year anniversary greetings
I have been in Nagaland stationed at Kohima from 1975 to 2015, 40 years. As a close observer, researcher and social worker, I have witnessed the ups and downs in and around Nagaland. When the excesses by militants became unbearable coupled with malicious propaganda to cover up their sins, I used to write articles in local media including Nagaland Post. Very often I got serious rejoinders accompanied with threatening. Gruesome murder of Dr. Mahesh Chandra Joshi, Dean in SASRD, Ghaspani, Nagrajan Chief Engineer PHE Nagaland; Dr. LV. Reddy, DC Kohima; Chalie Kevichusa, threat on the life of Dr. BB Kumar, Principal Science College Kohima, repeated assassination attempts on the life of Commissioner SC Dev, Dr. Hokishe Sema and Padma Bhushan Dr. SC Jamir and the likes worried me. Though a Central Government employee in office of Accountant General Nagaland Kohima I wrote several articles narrating the incidents and it’s grave consequences on Naga psyche. The glorification of insurgent leaders and their hostile acts were another serious problem that needed to be brought over to surface. The constructive journalism under the umbrella of Nagaland Post edited by none other than you have a lion share of contribution in shaping today’s Nagaland. Press is the voice of people, the helpless mass and the victims of militancy. But it was a risky job for Nagaland Post to raise the voices of victims because of gun culture. Writing editorials was a herculean task. It could neither condemn the secessionist and antisocial acts of insurgents nor can it appreciate the acts of law enforcing agencies. In fact, press in Nagaland was passing through a testing time lying between ditch and deep ocean. During these turbulent times, Nagaland Post was walking on sharp edge of sword maintaining a balanced reporting. It could be possible because of your wisdom, right perception, perseverance, commitment, courage and hard work. It could be possible because of the art of reporting in the prevailing circumstances of which you are the master. Today Naga perception of SOVEREIGNTY stands fully changed. The people of Nagaland want perfect peace and rapid development. Here again at today’s crucial time, Nagaland Post has a great responsibility of giving the correct informations about changing scenario at national and international levels. I believe that your mighty pen accompanied with responsible reporting will certainly deliver the good which will give a desired shape to our future Nagaland. On completion of 31years of publication I wish a bright future of Nagaland Post and a long life to your mighty pen. With best regards, Jagdamba Mall
Dear Editor Sir, On this glorious 31st Anniversary of your esteemed newspaper which has always hit the stands and educated us common people of the state and outside, the Nagaland Gorkha Association alongwith the citizens most sincerely congratulate the publisher, editor and staff of Nagaland Post. We pray and hope that your paper which has become a “morning habit” for all of us goes on to even greater heights in the coming days! Congratulations once again! ‘NCB wants to take over top 5 drug cases from Maha police’ MUMBAI, DEC 3 (PTI): Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik on Friday said the NCB has asked the state police’s Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) to transfer its “top five cases” to the central agency, and questioned the Union government’s intentions. The Narcotics Control Bureau’s (NCB) letter to the ANC attributed the decision to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, he claimed in a video shared on social media. He also shared the text of the purported letter. NCB Director General S N Pradhan wrote to Maharashtra Director General of Police on November 24 asking for a list of five cases fit to be handed over to the NCB, said the senior NCP leader.
Nawab Malik
The letter sought that state governments prepare lists of cases having “interstate and international” ramifications and consider handing them over to the NCB to help it unearth entire networks, he said. “We want to know what is the criteria for (selecting) top five cases. Are they the ones which garnered a lot of publicity?” Malik said.

Government must regulate online gaming industry: Sushil Kumar Modi
NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (PTI): Voicing concern over children getting addicted to mobile games, Rajya Sabha member and senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi on Friday demanded that the government should regulate the online gaming industry and impose a uniform tax on it. Raising the issue during the Zero Hour, he said these online games have now given way to gambling and betting. Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu asked Ashwini Vaishnaw, who is Minister of Communications, Electronics & Information Technology, to take note of this issue. “Consult the Law

Ministry and do the needful. It’s a big menace,” Naidu remarked. Modi said the booming online gaming industry has become a big problem for the youngsters in this country. “Online gaming is becoming a big addiction. I would like to highlight that this sector, like the crypto industry, certainly has a
regulatory lacunae. So, I would urge the government to bring a uniform tax on online gaming. I urge the government to make a comprehensive framework of regulation for online gaming,” he said. If there are no regulations, Modi said it will be difficult to stop children from getting addicted. “Crores and crores of youngsters have become addictive to online gaming. As it is online, it is very difficult to prevent kids from getting addicted. And now this online gaming has been converted into gambling or betting. And now there is a controversy whether it is a game of skill or it is a game of chance,” the BJP leader said.
New Navy chief strongly backs theaterisation plan
NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (PTI): In the backdrop of the Chinese Navy’s rapid expansion and its frequent forays into the Indian Ocean, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar said on Friday that his force is fully capable of confronting any security threat and fully backed the ambitious tri-services reforms that included setting up of a maritime theatre command. Addressing a press conference on the eve of Navy Day, he said the situation along India’s northern border has added to the security
complexities at a time the country was reeling under COVID-19 and that the “dual” scenario continues. “In these testing times, the Indian Navy aims to stand steadfast in furthering our national and maritime interests. Our focus on maintaining combat and mission readiness resulted in deterring any misadventure in the maritime domain,” he said without elaborating. On the Chinese Navy’s growing combat capability and presence in the Indian Ocean, the newly-appointed Navy Chief said the on-
Omicron: NCBS monitoring situation in four top cities HYDERABAD DEC 3 (IANS): The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), which confirmed the first two cases of the Omicron variant in Bengaluru on Thursday, is continuously monitoring the situation in four cities - Bengaluru, Hyderabad, New Delhi, and Pune. The NCBS is a part of a consortium of national laboratories performing genomic surveillance across four city clusters. The consortium was established four months ago with support from The Rockefeller Foundation’s Pandemic Prevention Institute, and is led by the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad. Dr Rakesh Mishra at the CCMB said on Friday that the consortium is continuously monitoring the situation in all the four cities and has upscaled its efforts to sequence as many samples as possible Apart from the CCMB and the NCBS, the consortium includes CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology - IGIB in New Delhi and the Pune Knowledge Cluster, Indian Institute of Science
Education and Research (IISER), Pune, and CSIRNational Chemical Laboratory in Pune. The consortium is focused on upscaling genomic surveillance as part of national efforts led by the INSACOG - Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium - to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic. The consortium intensified its sequencing efforts after the World Health Organisation announced Omicron as a Variant of Concern. Such an intensified effort enabled the Bengaluru team at the NCBS, a member laboratory of INSACOG, in collaboration with Strand Life Sciences and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), to detect, rapidly sequence and verify the existence of the omicron variant in samples from two Covid-19 infected individuals. They hope this will aid in a rapid response to contain the spread of variants of concern. Prof Satyajit Mayor from the NCBS conveyed the information to local and national authorities, and the Indian government released a statement on December 2, all within four days of receiving the samples.

going developments and deployments in the region are factored into the Indian Navy’s capability development plans and preparedness. “We are aware of the developments of the Chinese Navy. They have built
138 ships in the last 10 years. Every nation is entitled to have its own capability development. We keep an eye on all developments in our area,” he said. The Navy chief said China’s PLA Navy has been present in the Indian Ocean Region since 2008 and the Indian Navy has been watching it. “It is not just the numbers that matter. It is also about people, how you employ the weapons that you have, your strategy and your operational plans etc. There are a whole lot of issues,” he said. “I want to assure
you that the Indian Navy is a well-balanced force and is confident of defending India’s maritime interests for sure,” he added. Admiral Kumar said that Acceptance of Necessity (approval) has been accorded for 72 projects worth Rs 1,97,359 crore for the Navy and out of which 59 projects worth Rs 1,74,027 crore will be implemented indigenously. Referring to the theaterisation plan of the armed forces, he said the details on setting up of the maritime theatre command are being worked out.
NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (PTI): The Global Hunger Index (GHI) does not reflect India’s true picture as it is a flawed measure of hunger, the government said on Friday. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said the India’s ranking is 101st in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2021 brought out by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe. Nepal and Bangladesh are ranked 76 and Pakistan is at the 92nd place, she said. As per the GHI report, the composite GHI scores of India have improved from 38.8 in 2000 to 27.5 in 2021. Thus, the country has shown consistent improvement over the years. “The calculation of GHI is based on four indi-
BJP MPs from WB demand CAA in state NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (IANS): BJP MPs from West Bengal on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state. The delegation, led by state unit president Dr Sukanta Majumdar, also requested the Prime Minister to visit the state. Repor tedly, it also urged the Prime Minister to frame rules for CAA and implement it in the state. “We requested Prime Minister Modi for early implementation of CAA in West Bengal after framing the rules. Those who are eligible should be given citizenship,” a team member said. The delegation also sought allocation of funds announced in the budget which is still pending. “The budget announced is still pending. Funds for the North South corridor are yet to be allocated. Development of tea gardens is still to take off. We requested the Prime Minister to implement the budget,” he said. Raising the issue of post-poll attack on the BJP workers, the MPs said despite a an ongoing CBI probe, the violence has not stopped. The delegation also apprised the Prime Minister of the corruption in the MGNREGA scheme.
cators - Undernourishment, Child Stunting, Child Wasting and Child Mortality. Global Hunger Index (GHI) does not reflect India’s true picture as it is a flawed measure of ‘Hunger’,” Jyoti said. Only one indicator, which is undernourishment, is directly related to hunger, she added. “The two indicators i.e. stunting and wasting are outcomes of complex interactions of various other factors like sanitation, genetics, environment. and utilisation of food intake apart from hunger which is taken as the causative/outcome factor for stunting and wasting in the GHI. “Also, there is hardly any evidence that the fourth indicator i.e. child mortality is an outcome of hunger,” the minister said. Sadhvi highlighted that
the government has enacted the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013 which provides for coverage of up to 75 per cent of the rural population and up to 50 per cent of the urban population, thus addressing the hunger alleviation of the bottom 67 per cent of the population, which at Census 2011 is at a maximum of 81.35 crore persons. Identification of beneficiaries under the Act is under two categories -households covered under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Households. The Priority Households are entitled to receive 5 kg foodgrains per person per month and AAY households are entitled to receive 35 kg per household per month at Rs 1-3 per kg for coarse grains/wheat/rice respectively.
India supplies 70 per cent of world’s vaccines: Mandaviya
Mansukh Mandaviya
NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (IANS): India caters to 70 per cent of the world’s Covid vaccine requirements, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Friday. Responding to a question in the Lok Sabha on the coronavirus pandemic, he said that two Covid vaccines - Covaxin and ZyCoV-D developed indigenously by Indian scientists and other Covishield developed by the technology transfer have been approved for the emergency use. He said that before Covid, India was importing several equipment like N-95 masks, PPE kits, ventilators, but now the country has become an exporter of these.
“As on April 11, 2021, there were 20 plants manufacturing Remdesivir in the country producing 30,000 injections in a month. We have helped the country’s manufacturing companies from approval to assembling raw material from around the world,” Mandaviya said. While the number of these plants increased from 20 to more than 60, the production capacity in a month has exceeded more than 10 million. “The Prime Minister Cares Fund had approved setting of 1,225 oxygen plants. These plants have been started in all the states. Today, a total of 829 plants are in the process of being established. More than 70 per cent of these Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) plants have been installed across the country,” he said. About economic aid to the states during the Covid pandemic, Mandaviya said: “In July 2021, while giving ECRP-2 package, more than Rs 23,000 crore were made available to the states.

Observing that India has proved to the world that it is second to none when it comes to adopting technology, he said transformational initiatives under Digital India have opened doors for innovative Fintech solutions to be applied in governance. Sharing India’s financial inclusion drive led by technology, Modi said from less than 50 per cent of Indians having bank accounts in 2014, India has almost universalised it with 430 million Jan Dhan accounts in the last seven years. processing around 4.2 billion transactions last month, and almost 300 million invoices being uploaded on the GST portal every month. Emphasising that financial inclusion is the driver of the Fintech revolution, he said Fintech is resting on four pillars -- income, investments, insurance and institutional credit. “When income grows, investment becomes possible. Insurance coverage enables greater risk-taking ability and investments. Institutional credit gives wings for expansion. And we have worked on each of these pillars. When all these factors come together, you suddenly find so many more people participating in the financial sector,” Modi said. Highlighting the importance of trust in Fintech in the light of the wide acceptance of these innovations among the masses, the Prime Minister said the common Indian has shown immense trust in the ecosystem by embracing digital payments and such technologies.

NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday underlined the need for converting Fintech initiatives into a Fintech revolution with a view to ensure financial empowerment for every single citizen. The Fintech industry has achieved huge scale and found acceptability among the masses, he said while inaugurating the Infinity Forum. “Now, it is time to convert these Fintech initiatives into a Fintech revolution. A revolution that helps to achieve financial empowerment of every single citizen of the country,” the Prime Minister said. Stressing that technology is bringing a big shift in finance, he said mobile payment last year exceeded ATM cash withdrawals. Citing another example, he said, fully digital banks without any physical branch offices are already a reality and may become commonplace in less than a decade. “As humans evolved, so did the form of our transactions. NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (PTI): Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday called for a “collective global action” for effective regulation of ever-changing technology and tech-driven payment systems. So far, regulators are only “catching-up” in regulating ever-evolving technology and hence there is no one point formula with which it can be regulated, she said. Her comments also come against the backdrop of the government preparing to come out with legislation to regulate cryptocurrencies. “Even as we are thinking about at a national level, there should simultaneously be a global mechanism through which we are constantly monitoring the movement of technology, so that whether it is your cryptocurrency, whether it is tech-driven payment system, data privacy, whether it is ensuring that data is used ethically... “When you are looking at data as one of the

MUMBAI, DEC 3 (PTI): Domestic markets lurched lower on Friday after India reported its first case of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, prompting investors to dial back risk exposure. The Centre on Thursday said two cases of Omicron have been detected in Karnataka. Both the patients are men, aged 66 and 46 years, with mild symptoms. Severe symptoms have not been noted, an official said. The government has asked people not to panic and follow COVID-appropriate behaviour. It also said while there is no evidence to suggest that existing vaccines do not work against Omicron, some of the mutations reported may decrease the efficacy of the jabs. INTERNATIONAL Pakistan mob lynches SL citizen over ‘blasphemy’
NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2021
Russia amassing troops: Ukraine KYIV, DEC 3 (AGENCIES): Ukraine’s defense minister estimated Friday that Russia has amassed more than 94,000 troops near their borders and said there is a probability of a “large-scale escalation” in late January. Ukrainian and Western officials recently voiced alarm about a Russian troop buildup near Ukraine, saying they feared it could herald an invasion. Moscow has denied planning to invade and accused Ukraine and its Western backers of fabricating claims to cover up their own allegedly aggressive designs. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov told lawmakers Friday that the number of Russian troops near Ukraine and in Russia-annexed Crimea is estimated to be 94,300. “Our intelligence service analyzes all scenarios, including the worst ones. It notes that a probability of a large-scale escalation on the part of Russia exists. The most probable time when (Russia) will be ready for the escalation is end of January,” Reznikov said. The minister noted an escalation “is a probable

Measures against delta work for omicron variant too, says WHO
LAHORE, DEC 3 (PTI): A mob in Pakistan on Friday lynched a Sri Lankan national before burning his body over alleged blasphemy in the country’s Punjab province. Priyantha Kumara, who was in his 40s, was working as general manager of a factory in Sialkot district, a Punjab police official told PTI. “Mr Kumara allegedly tore a poster of the hardline Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) in which Quranic verses were inscribed and threw it in the dustbin. The poster of the Islamist party was pasted on the wall adjoining the office of Kumara. A couple of factory workers saw him removing the poster and spread the word in the factory,” the official said. Hundreds of men, enraged over the “blasphemy” incident, started gathering outside the factory from adjoining areas. “The mob dragged the suspect (the Sri Lankan national) from the factory and severely tortured him. After he succumbed to his wounds, the mob burnt his body before police reached there,” the official said.
MANILA, DEC 3 (AP): World Health Organisation officials in the Western Pacific say border closures adopted by some countries may buy time to deal with the omicron coronavirus variant, but measures put in place and experience gained in dealing with the delta variant should remain the foundation for fighting the pandemic. While a few regional countries are facing surges, COVID-19 cases and deaths in many others have decreased and plateaued, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Dr. Takeshi Kasai told reporters Friday in a virtual news conference broadcast from Manila, Philippines. “Border control can delay the virus coming in and buy time. But every country and every community must prepare for new surges in cases,” Kasai said. “The positive news in all of this is that none of the information we have currently about omicron suggests we need to change the directions of our response.” Much remains unknown about the new variant, including whether it is more contagious, as some

KABUL, DEC 3 (AP): The Taliban decreed Friday that they are banning the forced marriage of women in the war-torn country, in what appears to be a move to address criteria that developed nations consider a precondition to recognise their government and restore aid. The move announced by Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhunzada came as poverty is surging in Afghanistan, following the religious militia’s takeover in August that pushed out US and international forces and led foreign governments
to halt funds that had been a mainstay of the economy. “Both (women and men) should be equal,” said the decree, adding that “no one can force women to marry by coercion or pressure.” Women’s rights improved markedly over the past two decades of international presence in Afghanistan, but are seen as under threat with the return of the Taliban, whose earlier rule in the 1990s saw them virtually cloistered. Forced marriages have become more commonplace in the poor, conservative
accusations and threats with Ukraine, the United States and its NATO allies this week. The West threatened the Kremlin with the toughest sanctions yet if it launches an invasion of Ukraine. Russia, seeing new U.S. and European support for Ukraine’s military, sternly warned that any presence of NATO troops and weapons on Ukrainian soil represents a “red line.” The Kremlin also expressed concern that Ukraine might use force to reclaim control of the country’s rebel east. country, as the internally displaced marry off their young daughters in exchange for a bride-price that can be used to pay debts and feed their families. The announced decree did not mention a minimum age for marriage, which previously was set at 16 years old. Women in Afghanistan for decades were treated like property — as an exchange token for blood money or ending disputes or tribal feuds. The Taliban now state they are against the practice. They also said a widow will now be allowed to re-marry 17 weeks after her husband’s death, choosing her new husband freely. Longstanding tribal traditions have held it customary for a widow to marry one of her husband’s brothers or relatives in the event of his death. The Taliban leadership says it has ordered Afghan courts to treat women fairly, especially widows seeking inheritance as next of kin. The group also says it has asked government ministers to spread awareness of women’s rights across the population.

Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev reemphasized Friday that Russia is not planning to attack Ukraine. “We don’t have any plans to attack Ukraine. We don’t have any heightened military activity near Ukraine’s borders. There is no preparation underway for an offensive,” Kosachev told Russia’s state TV channel Russia-24.
of Iranian nuclear facility
NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (IANS): Israel’s Mossad recruited a team of Iranian nuclear scientists to carry out a covert operation which blew up one of the regime’s most secure nuclear facilities earlier this year, the Jewish Chronicle reported. Up to 10 scientists were approached by Israeli agents and agreed to destroy the underground A1000 centrifuge hall at Natanz in April, though they believed that they were working for international dissident groups. Some of the explosives they used were dropped into the compound by a drone and quietly collected by the scientists, while others were smuggled into the high security facility hidden in boxes of food on a catering lorry, the report said. The ensuing destruction caused chaos in the highest echelons of the Iranian leadership. It demolished 90 per cent of the centrifuges at the nuclear
plant, delaying progress towards a bomb and putting the key complex out of action for up to nine months, the report added. The new details are among astonishing secrets of three connected Mossad operations that took place over an 11-month period of sabotage in Iran. The first two, in July 2020 and April 2021, targeted the complex in Natanz using explosives, while he third, in June this year, took the form of a quadcopter assault on the Iran Centrifuge Technology Company (TESA), in the city of Karaj, 30 miles northwest of Tehran, Jewish Chronicle reported. Mossad spies hid explosives in building materials used to construct the Natanz centrifuge hall as long ago as 2019, then triggered them in 2020. Agents sneaked an armed quadcopter, weighing the same as a motorbike, into Iran piece by piece, and used it to launch missiles at the TESA site in Karaj in June, the report said.
BERLIN, NOV 3 (AGENCIES): German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle said Friday it is suspending four employees and one freelancer during an investigation into allegations that they expressed antiIsrael and antisemitic views. Munich daily newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung this week quoted social media comments allegedly made by members of DW’s Arabic service, including some that appeared to downplay the Holocaust or perpetuate antJewish stereotypes. DW said in a statement that it requested an independent external investigation into the allegations. The probe will be conducted by former German Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger and psychologist Ahmad Mansour. The broadcaster said all employees are required to abide by DW’s values and principles, which include a clear commitment to Israel’s right to exist and a rejection of antisemitism.

WHO calls for strengthening response measures in South East Asia
As India confirmed two cases of Omicron, the World Health Organization on Friday said countries in the SouthEast Asia Region should further strengthen COVID-19 response measures to curtail the spread of the virus and its variants. “Strengthening surveillance to rapidly detect importation of any new variant and transmission of existing virus and its variants, implementing calibrated public health and social measures and scaling up vaccination coverage should continue to be our focus,” Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director of the WHO South-East Asia Region, said in a statement. Within a week of announcement of Omicron as a new variant of concern, India on Thursday confirmed the variant in two persons detected with COVID-19, the first few cases in WHO South-East Asia Region. Preliminary evidence suggests higher transmissibility and potential immune escape that could lead to surge in cases.
Tweets from Pak embassy in Serbia criticise PM Khan Allege non-payment of salaries; FO says account hacked ISLAMABAD, DEC 3 (PTI): Pakistan on Friday said the social media accounts of its embassy in Serbia have been “hacked”, hours after the official Twitter handle of the mission criticised the Imran Khan government over recordbreaking inf lation and alleged non-payment of salaries for the past three months. The verified Twitter account of the Pakistan had tweeted, “With inflation breaking all previous records, how long do you expect @ImranKhanPTI that we [government] official will remain silent & keep working for you without been paid for past 3 months & our children been forced out of school due to non payment of fees. Is this #NayaPakistan?” A parody song was also embedded in the tweet that mocked Khan for his often
used catchphrase ‘ghabrana nahi hai (we do not have to worry)’. In a tweet, the embassy said: “I am sorry @ ImranKhanPTI, am not left with another option.” Soon after the tweets went viral, the Foreign Office issued a statement on Twitter that the social media accounts of the embassy have been hacked. “The Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts of the Embassy of Pakistan in Serbia have been hacked. Messages being posted on these accounts are not from the Embassy of Pakistan in Serbia,” it said. The tweets have been deleted. The prime minister’s digital media aide, Arslan Khalid, also said that the account was “hacked” and the foreign office is “conducting an enquiry into it”. The “aap nay ghabrana nahi hai” phrase often used by Khan while addressing citizens has become a taunt in Pakistan in the wake of the worsening economic situation and people often tease one another with the jibe.

BEIJING/VIENTIANE, USD 6 billion cross-border DEC 3 (PTI): China on train of its multi-billionFriday launched the first dollar Belt and Road Ini-
tiative (BRI) from Laos, which Beijing says will help the small and only landlocked country in South East Asia turn into a landlinked hub, boost regional connectivity and supply chain resilience. Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Laos’ counterpart Thongloun Sisoulith jointly witnessed the opening of the China-Laos railway via video link on Friday. The first train of the China-Laos Railway left Vientiane soon after the cross-border railway was
officially put into operation, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Besides China, Laos shares borders with Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia which offered Beijing to extend the train project to those countries. Laos is the only landlocked country in South East Asia. Like China, which is ruled by the Communist Party, it is a one-party socialist republic governed by the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.
The 1,035-km electrified passenger and cargo railway, connecting Kunming in southwest China’s Yunnan Province with Laos’ capital Vientiane, fully adopts Chinese technical standards and consists of two sections, the report said. Construction of the section in Laos from the border town of Boten to Vientiane started in December 2016, and construction of the section in China from the city of Yuxi to the border town of Mohan
France signs weapons mega-deal with UAE as Macron tours Gulf NICE (FRANCE), DEC 3 (AP): France announced the signing Friday of a 16 billion-euro (USD 18 billion) armaments megacontract for the sale of 80 of its upgraded Rafale warplanes to the United Arab Emirates. The French Defense Ministry said the deal was France’s largest-ever weapons contract for export. It came as French President Emmanuel Macron is in the Emirates on the first stop of a two-day visit to the Persian Gulf. There was no immediate confirmation of the signing from Emirati officials. Manufacturer Dassault Aviation said the UAE is buying the upgrad-

in the arm for France’s defense industry after the collapse of a $66 billion contract for Australia to buy 12 French submarines. Dassault Aviation
boss Eric Trappier called the sale “a French success story” and “excellent news for France and for its aeronautical industry.” The purchase marks a sizeable step up for the UAE’s military capabilities in the oil- and gas-rich region. Charles Forrester, a senior analyst at Janes, said the fighter “will significantly upgrade UAE’s airpower capabilities in terms of strike, air-to-air warfare, and reconnaissance.” Dassault said the Rafale will give the UAE “a tool capable of guaranteeing sovereignty and operational independence.” Macron and Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, were
present at the contract signing, it said. French defense officials were jubilant. The defense minister, Florence Parly, said the deal “directly contributes to regional stability.” France has deep ties to the United Arab Emirates, a federation of seven sheikdoms on the Arabian Peninsula, particularly since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The UAE opened a French naval base in 2009 at Abu Dhabi’s Port Zayed. French war planes and personnel are also stationed at Al-Dhafra Air Base, a major facility outside the Emirati capital of Abu Dhabi that’s also home to several thousand American troops.
started in December 2015. As a docking project between the China-proposed BRI and Laos’ strategy to convert itself from a landlocked country into a landlinked hub, the railway is of great significance to bilateral economic, social and cultural exchanges as well as the regional connectivity, the report said. With a maximum operating speed of 160-km per hour, the travel time from Kunming to Vientiane takes about 10 hours, including customs clearance time.

Third Nagaland Film Festival begins
T
he third Nagaland Film Festival Hornbill edition started at Capital Convention Centre, here on Friday afternoon with Nagaland chief secretary, J Alam as the special guest for the inaugural programme. Chief secretar y, J Alam in his address said films play an important role in a person’s life especially in this time and age of communication. He said the film industry had grown massively over the years and as a medium it had reached every nook and corner not only through the theatres and cinema halls but even through other internet platforms. Alam said people in the organised film industry were opportune since entry into the field was extremely difficult and only the best people make the cut and become successful. He observed although entry into the film world was difficult, there were many other avenues where people could succeed in this time and age especially through the help of internet. The chief secretary pointed out that many young people these days

were creating their own stories, documentaries, short films, upload it on YouTube and become celebrities overnight. Taking all these into consideration, Alam said people of this age were living in very exciting times and that there was a huge opportunity waiting for them. However, he said one main obstacle could be how to facilitate that opportunity and that was where Film Association of Nagaland (FAN) had come in and was playing the vanguard role while department of information and public relations was also trying to facilitate in
the best way possible. Earlier FAN president and renowned Naga film maker, Kivini Shohe, in a brief remark said film making in Nagaland was still in a very nascent stage, however, by coming together under the FAN umbrella, Kivini said the Naga filmmakers were striving to equip themselves to become better story tellers, cinematographers, editors, script writers, directors, producers and actors. She pointed out that in the second edition of the film festival, only films from the northeast were screened during which the participants learned a lot
about their neighbours and fellow filmmakers from the region. “It was a good experience for all of us and this time with the festival becoming part of the Hornbill festival, we decided to have a mixed up screening of films,” Kivini said. She wished that the participants of the festival would be enriched by the presentations and be able to widen their knowledge in the field of film making. Shohe hoped that Naga filmmakers also would be able to come out with some good and outstanding works in the days to come. During the inaugural, winners of the Online Film Competition 2021 organised by FAN in collaboration with Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) and Task Force for Music and Arts (TaFMA), were announced. Naga Silat Competition Jr Hockey WC: Germany dash India’s hopes 1sttoHornbill be held in Dimapur on Dec 8 BHUBANESWAR, DEC 3 (PTI): Defending champions India’s dream of a second consecutive FIH Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup title was shattered on Friday as six-time winners Germany defeated the hosts 2-4 here. Germany will meet Argentina in the summit clash of the premier tournament. The Indians, who last won the Junior World Cup title in Lucknow in 2016, looked a pale shadow of themselves against Germany. The Germans scored through Erik Kleinlein (15th minute), Aron Flatten (21st), skipper Hannes Muller (24th) and Christopher Kutter (25th). For India, Uttam Singh (25th) and Boby Singh Dhami (60th) were the goal getters. India will play France in the third-fourth place classification match on Sunday, before the final. India had earlier lost 4-5 against France in the pool stages. The Indians’ game on Friday was in stark contrast to the way they played against Belgium in the quarterfinals. While their defence was extraordinary in the last match, the backline was caught napping by the
Ronaldo reaches 800 career goals with Arsenal double
LO N D O N, D E C 3 (AGENCIES):Cristiano Ronaldo took his tally of career goals to 801 as the five-time Ballon d’Or winner struck twice for Manchester United against Arsenal on Thursday. Ronaldo’s return has been pinpointed as one of the reasons for United’s decline this season as they have struggled to find the right balance with the Portuguese up front. However, the 36-yearold has now scored 12 goals in 17 appearances since returning to the club where he first made his name as a world star. His double against the Gunners took his tally across two spells at United to 130.

Germans. There was no cohesion between the midfield and forwardline with Uttam showing his brilliance in patches. The Germans were the better side on display in the first quarter and pressed the Indian defence from the word go. Maximillian Siegburg missed a golden opportunity to take the lead for Germany as he failed to connect a loose ball in the far post with an open goal in front. In the next minute Germany secured their first penalty corner but India goalkeeper Prasanth Chau-
han made a fine save. Instead of going full throttle, India preferred to play half-press and utilised the flanks to build their attacks, but they faltered in stopping and trapping the ball in wet pitch conditions. Ger many, instead, played better under the constant drizzle compared to the hosts and took the lead just 25 seconds from the end of first quarter. Kleinlein scored from a rebound from Germany’s second penalty corner after the initial flick was saved by Prasanth. Five seconds from the
first break India secured a penalty corner but vicecaptain Sanjay Kumar failed to find the back of the net. Germany continued to press hard for the second goal and dominated the proceedings in the second quarter too. Six minutes into the second quarter Germany once again caught the Indian defence napping and doubled their lead through Flatten. Minutes later the Germans surged 3-0 ahead when skipper Muller found the back of the Indian net to the right of Pawan with
a reverse hit from the top of the circle. India responded immediately and pulled a goal back through Uttam who tapped in Rahul Kumar Rajbhar’s cross from the left flank. But India’s joy was shortlived as they conceded another penalty corner seconds later, which resulted in a penalty stroke, and Kutter made no mistake from the spot as Germany led 4-1 at half time. Trailing by three goals, India tried to press hard after the change of ends but the German defence stood tall. While India created a few good moves in the third quarter, the finishing was not up to the mark. In the 42nd minute, Rajbhar found himself in a scoring position but Germany keeper Anton Brinckman came out of his line to close down the angle. With four quality penalty corner specialists in the side, India’s weapon was set pieces but the German defence conceded just one to take that factor out of the contest. Instead of trying to earn penalty corners, the Indian players were guilty of holding on to the ball and dribbling too much inside the opponent’s circle.
BWF: Sindhu loses final group match, Srikanth bows out
BALI, DEC 3 (PTI): Already Assured of a semifinal berth at the BWF World Tour Finals, India’s P V Sindhu on Friday suffered a three-game defeat to top seed Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand in her third and final group A women’s singles match here on Friday. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, couldn’t apply enough pressure on the world no. 10 Chochuwong to go down fighting 12-21 21-19 14-21 in a match that lasted an hour and 11 minutes. It was Sindhu’s third loss to the 2016 world junior champion Chochuwong in seven meetings. Sindhu thus finished in the second position in Group A, behind Chochuwong and her opponent in Saturday’s semifinal will be Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi.

In another last-four clash involving an Indian, Lakshya Sen will take on reigning Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen. Earlier, Kidambi Srikanth bowed out of the season-ending tournament after losing to second seeded Malaysian Lee Zii Jia 1921 14-21 in 37 minutes in his third and final group B match. It was Srikanth’s second loss to the world no. 8 Malaysian, who had defeated the Indian at Hylo
Open in straight games. Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy too ended their campaign though they eked out a hard-fought 21-19 9-21 21-14 win over England’s Chloe Birch and Lauren Smith in the inconsequential third and final group match. Sindhu, the reigning world champion, was quite erratic and couldn’t control the rallies against Chochuwong, who rode on her quality of strokes to stay a
step ahead. In the first game, Sindhu erred in her lengths early on as Chochuwong led 5-3. The Indian managed to collect a few points but she never looked in control. Chochuwong took the initiative and kept things under her control, leading 11-6 at the interval. The Thai player got rewarded for her angled and crisp returns, while Sindhu lacked consistency as Chochuwong took 17-9 lead. An attacking return gave Chochuwong eight game points and she sealed it when Sindhu went wide again. After the change of sides, Chochuwong, playing with the drift, committed few unforced errors as Sindhu led 6-3 before managing a healthy five-point advantage at the break with her rival going long.

Busta and Ecuador’s Emilio Gomez. Medvedev broke serve twice in the first set and three times in the second against No. 94 Mikael Ymer, Sweden’s top-ranked player. “Today I should’ve served better, but I’m really happy to bring the point to the team,” Medvedev said. “The most important thing is that we are winning a lot of matches. We didn’t lose a tie in the group and we are really looking forward
to Saturday.” Russia beat Serbia in the quarterfinals of the event’s first edition in 2019 before losing to Canada in the last four. Russia is seeking its third Davis Cup title after triumphs in 2002 and 2006. The Russian team is officially being called RTF (Russian Tennis Federation) in the competition amid its ongoing doping suspension in international sport.
ISL: Chennaiyin FC, East Bengal play out a goalless draw

GOA, DEC 3 (IANS): Chennaiyin FC and SC East Bengal shared points after playing a goalless draw in the 2021-22 Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Tilak Maidan Stadium, here on Friday. K Y M C
Chennaiyin now sit on top of the table with 7 points while SC East Bengal after back-to-back heavy defeats found some solace, placed 9th with a couple of points. SC East Bengal made
a host of changes after their defeat in the goalfest against Odisha. Daniel Chima Chukwu and Amarjit Singh Kiyam were handed their first starts. Suvam Sen, still filling in for the injured Arindam
Bhattacharja, kept the Kolkata side in the game early on. First Mirlan Murzaev tested him from point blank range before Lallianzuala Chhangte shot straight at the goalkeeper. Chennaiyin dominated proceedings as Amir Dervisevic almost scored an own goal in the 25th minute. The Slovenian, in an attempt to intercept a low cross from Chhangte deflected it towards his own goal, but luckily brushed the side-netting. While there was a flurry of halfc h a n c e s, n e i t h e r s i d e looked promising enough to break the deadlock before the break. Seasoned campaigners Adil Khan and Raju Gaikwad were brought in after the change of ends. Despite that, SC East Bengal’s defensive frailties were apparent. Suvam reduced again with a great fist on Koman’s incoming ball. Chhangte shot the loose ball but his attempt was
blocked, five minutes in the second half. Chennaiyin, who have been scarce but clinical this season so far showed glimpses of the old as the finishing abilities suddenly when missing. Captain Thapa had found Jerry on the through as the full back flung a wild shot. Ariel Borysiuk, the Polish international had a shot after Koman and Chhangte’s onetwo from a corner kick but the attempt was blocked by Tomislav Mrcela. The Red and Golds in the final quarter of the match had a few opportunities themselves. Chukwu first released a weak shot on target before Raju, who connected from a Dervisevic corner headed it, only to bounce and nestle into the ‘keeper’s gloves. SC East Bengal got their final chance with back-toback spot kicks in the final minute but the night’s trend continued as both were wasted to the comfort of Chennaiyin FC.

2nd Test: India reach 221/4 at stumps
Indian batter Mayank Agarwal plays a shot on the first day of 2nd Test match played between India and New Zealand at Wankhede stadium, in Mumbai on Friday. (PTI)
MUMBAI, DEC 3 (PTI): Under pressure to prove his worth, Mayank Agarwal made the best statement possible with a superb hundred as India recovered from a sudden top-order collapse to reach 221 for 4 in two extended opening day sessions against New Zealand in the second Test here on Friday. Agarwal (120 batting, 246 balls), who is all but certain to sit out once Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul come back during the next series (if South Africa then away, if West Indies then home), added to a happy headache for coach Rahul Dravid, on a day when vicecaptain Ajinkya Rahane had to be “dropped” because of a hamstring niggle. Worse, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli failed to trouble the scorers and it was a hundred that came under pressure with India being 80 for 3 and 160 for 4 at different stages of the game. Had the Indian team management been forced to play Rahane, the axe was likely to fall on Agarwal and
it’s never a great feeling to go out there in such a situation. He was jittery to begin with as a streaky boundary through slips came early on but once he marched down the track to loft Ajaz Patel (29-10-73-4) for a straight six, his nerves had all but vanished. The boundaries --- 14 in all and four sixes, all off Patel showed his class as he got his fourth hundred in Tests. In fact, Patel, who was by far the best New Zealand bowler in view, having reduced India from 80 for no loss to 80 for three, did look pedestrian in front of Agarwal at times. When an airbor ne Agarwal punched the air after a square driven boundary off part-time seamer Daryl Mitchell, one could sense that pressure weighing a thousand tonne must have come off his chest. Agarwal was the first choice opener during the England series but before the first game, he got hit on the head and KL Rahul coming in his place, grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
With Rohit also having his best overseas series as Test opener, Agarwal was confined to the reserves. He could again be back in the reserves but he made a statement of intent with his strokeplay as he dominated the 80-run fourth wicket stand with Shreyas Iyer (18). Along with another reserve player in Wriddhiman Saha (25 batting, 53 balls), Agarwal added another 61 runs before the close of play. New Zealand had erred in not playing Neil Wagner on a track where there was a lot of bounce on offer. If Agarwal showed discretion, same couldn’t be said about Shubman Gill (44, 71 balls), who was dazzling till he was around in their 80-run opening stand before Patel snuffed him out. Gill looked fluent before paying for his impetuosity which led to a mini collapse. Mumbai-born left-arm spinner Patel also picked up Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli in quick succession with both failing to trouble the scorers.
Patel became the second Mumbai-born cricketer after legendary England captain Douglas Jardine to play against India in his city of birth. He altered the length cleverly and the extra bounce, which is always a speciality of Wankhede, helped him immensely. He had Gill on the mat when he flighted one to entice him to come out and the ball tuned and jumped with keeper Tom Blundell making a hash of a stumping. However, the very next ball saw him shorten the length as Gill tried jabbing at it and it turned enough to take the outside edge into Ross Taylor’s palms. Pujara’s confidence has hit nadir after too many failures and he survived a DRS appeal from New Zealand before he jumped down the track to york himself. Patel, very wisely, fired one with an angle straight into his toes and what happened with Pujara often happens with out-of-form batters. For skipper Kohli, it was a delivery that straightened after pitching as the Indian skipper tried to play a forward defensive stroke. Straight umpire Anil Chaudhary gave him out and Kohli immediately asked for a review. The replay was inconclusive on whether it hit the bat first or pad and as per rule, TV umpire Virender Sharma went with his on-field colleague, leaving Kohli absolutely livid. He had a word with leg umpire Nitin Menon and was seen expressing his displeasure. The TV cameras then caught him standing in the dressing room balcony, visibly upset with the decision, which was a touch and go one.
SAI approves Neeraj’s off-season training in USA NEW DELHI, DEC 3 (PTI): The Sports Authority of India (SAI) on Friday approved an urgent proposal to enable Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra to travel to the US for a 90-day offseason training ahead of a busy 2022 season. The proposal, moved by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), was approved inside four hours to ensure the javelin thrower can fly out on Sunday, SAI said in a press release. The cost approved to train at the prestigious Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Centre under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) will be Rs. 38 lakh. The proposal was moved after the plan to base the javelin throwers in Potchefstroom was scrapped due to the new COVID-19 strain in South Africa. Given the uncertainty across the world, SAI decided to not wait for the Mission Olympic Cell meeting to approve the proposal. The nodal sports body will seek ratification of the decision from the next meeting of the MOC since the approval was granted to make sure that Chopra can leave India on Sunday. Chopra will thus start his preparation for the 2022 World Athletics Championships, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games at the training centre in Chula Vista, San Diego. The state-of-the-art centre, spread over 155 acres, is one of the world’s finest training and competition venues. The proposal for the camp is from December 5 to March 4 next.
