BALASORE/BHUBA N E S WA R , J U N 3 (PTI): Investigators were on Saturday looking into any human error, signal failure and other possible causes behind the three-train crash in Odisha’s Balasore district as officials submitted a preliminary inquiry report into the worst rail accident in India in nearly three decades that left at least 288 people dead and over 1,100 injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the accident site and was briefed by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw as well as officers of the disaster management teams. He also met some of the injured at the hospital.

“I do not have words to express the pain... Stringent action will be taken against those found guilty... No one will be spared,” Modi said.

del Express, which were carrying around 2,000 passengers, and a goods train occurred around 7 PM on Friday near the Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore, about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar.

Seventeen coaches were derailed and severely damaged in the accident, trapping hundreds of passengers. Both passenger trains were at a high speed

and it has been cited by experts as one of the main reasons for the high number of casualty.

From a vantage point high above the ground, the disaster site looked as if a powerful whirlwind had thrown the coaches like toys on top of each other.

Closer to the ground, bloodied, disfigured bodies and dismembered body parts lay enmeshed, creating a grotesque sight.

Large cranes were deployed to move the wreckage and gas cutters were used to extricate the bodies from the mangled, toppled coaches.

The rescue operation was wrapped up Saturday afternoon and restoration work started. The injured were admitted to four hospitals.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that a signal was given to Coro-

mandel Express to enter the main line but it was taken off and the train entered the loop line, where it crashed into a goods train parked there.

The Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express which was coming at high speed crashed into the coaches of Coromandel Express that had scattered on the adjacent track. More than 2,000 people gathered at the Balasore Medical College and Hospital at night to help the injured and many of them donated blood, officials said.

The morgue at the hospital was overflowing with shrouded bodies and was thronged by distraught relatives of passengers. As the nation mourned the massive tragedy, several states and parties cancelled their programmes and condolences poured in from across the world.

NSF office vandalism: ANCSU units hoist black flags

DIMAPUR, JUN 3 (NPN): All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) on Saturday informed that all its units hoisted black flag in their respective colleges ‘demanding justice’.

ANCSU through its

media cell stated that the exercise was carried out to express resentment against the inaction of the responsible authorities despite the “perpetrators publicly claiming their responsibility for the atrocious crime of

vandalizing the NSF and ANCSU office” in the wee hours of May 27, 2023.

ANCSU informed that the exercise would continue until the law enforcing agency initiate befitting punishment against the

culprits involved in the criminal act.

ENSA, ZSU-A condemn vandalism: Eastern Naga Students’ Association (ENSA) Myanmar has expressed deep concern over the vandalism of Naga

Students’ Federation (NSF) office.

In a press release, ENSA president Atimiu Makury and general secretary Wanglet Soktoo said that the act was “strongly condemnable” by every right-thinking Naga.

The association said it was shocked to learn about the incident as it came at a time when the eastern Naga student community was standing with NSF to “bring Nagas as one people and one nation surpassing the artificial boundaries.”

DIMAPUR, JUN 3 (NPN): Inviting the investors to invest in Nagaland, state chief minister, Neiphiu Rio, stated that the state government has instituted a dedicated government agency for investments and CSR programmes—Investment & Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN), which was pushing investment and corporate-friendly policies besides functioning as a single window clearance and ensuring ease of doing business.

Delivering keynote address at the North East Global Investors Summit 2023, Investors Roundtable held under the theme, “An Emerging Investment Destination”, at Rhododendron Hall, Police Complex, Chümoukedima, on Saturday, Rio said that since the attainment of Statehood in 1963, Nagaland has been an incredible story of development and progress. He said that the present government has dynamic outlook to keep pace with the growth of other states in the country and continuously making efforts for creation of investment-friendly ecosystem in Nagaland while formulating policies and incorporating good governance within the State.

Rio said that the state government has taken concrete steps to introduce new policies, laws and regulations to improve investment climate.

He said that suitable guidelines have been made to ensure smooth and easy availability of land in the

Rio said that the state government realized the lack of policy advocacy which discouraged new investors and existing investors looking to expand their operations. In its effort towards making Nagaland even more attractive as investment destination, Rio informed that the state government have proposed to establish new modern, fully planned township of an area measuring around 39 sq. km. (3900 ha) adjoining the

most important National Highway of the State (NH29), which is also part of the Asian Highway 1.

He reminded that Nagaland, as the gateway to South-East Asian countries, shared 215km international boundary with Myanmar with five identified trade centres. Rio said that this corridor was not just for State, but for entire country to create trade promotion and give wings to the Act East policy advocated by the Central government.

In order to facilitate better and cost-efficient transportation, the chief minister said the state was pursuing with Central government for development of an Inland Waterway on Tizu-Zungki river, the only east flowing river in the State and draining into Myanmar.

He said this would further help promote Indo-Myanmar trade and commerce and link up with Southeast Asian countries.

The chief minister expressed hope that the summit would be an opportunity to explore trade and investment potential of Nagaland.

He also expressed gratitude to Ministry of DoNER. Secretary ministry of DoNER, Lok Ranjan, in his speech, spoke on the strength of region and how collaboration could transform its resources to wealth.

He informed that DoNER ministry has limited resources, but added that one’s limitations could be transformed into wealth of opportunity, especially for a resource rich state like Nagaland.

Ex-Parliamentarians Association of Nagaland (Ex-PAN) has resolved to urge the state government to sincerely take up the implementation of Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN).

In a statement, Ex-PAN president Joshua Sumi and secretary S Supongmeren Jamir informed that the resolution was adopted at the general body meeting of the association of Nagaland held at Niathu Resort, Chumoukedima on May 31, 2023. Ex-PAN appreciated the state government for initiating the RIIN in order to check the influx of illegal migrants and immigrants in the Stale.

Ex-PAN noted that the process of political negotiations between the Government of India and the Naga negotiating groups—NSCN (IM) and Working Committee (WC) of seven NNPGs—

on October 31, 2019. It said that what remains was the signing of the final agreement between the negotiating parties.

The Ex-parliamentarians said that the protracted process of political negotiations has taken an immense toll on the lives and welfare of the people of Nagaland.

It stated that 26 years of political talks and negotiations was more than enough time for any issue to be resolved.

Therefore, Ex-PAN said it was “more than high time” to end the negotiations and declare whether the talks that have lasted over two decades was a success or a failure as the process cannot be left indefinitely anymore.

Proposal to empower Nagaland Lokayukta Correspondent

KOHIMA, JUN 3 (NPN): The Lokayukta or the Ombudsman that deals with corruption and mal-administration, has been reduced to a toothless tiger in many states of India.

One such case is the Nagaland Lokayukta, which has been divested of most of its powers. As per the proposal to amend the Nagaland Lokayukta Act 2017, the said Act (2017) has no provision for an investigation, prosecution wing or a special court unlike the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act 2013 where provisions have been made for an inquiry, investigation,

prosecution wings and special court under Section 2 (1) of the P.C. Act. It was also pointed out that the resolution of the state government constituting the State Vigilance Commission had been repealed vide Sec. 36 (1) of the 2017 Act. In this regard, all notifi-

cations issued by the government-- declaring vigilance police station, director of V&AC as officer-in-charge of vigilance police station, jurisdiction and offences into which V&AC officers can investigate has been repealed.

Under such circumstances, it said that officers

of Nagaland Lokayukta are deprived of the powers to arrest and do not have the advantage of custodial interrogation and registration of criminal cases. It further pointed out that not a single FIR has been lodged after the enactment of the Act of 2017 as there was no police station and no officer in-charge of police station.

Singh was addressing an interaction programme of the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) and the State Competent Authorities and representatives of Minority Educational Institutions

from Assam, Arunachal P r a d e s h , M a n i p u r, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim at Niathu Resort, Chumoukedima by hosted by department of Higher Education, Nagaland.

He said Article 30 Clause 1 gives religion and linguistic minority a fundamental right to establish and set up their own Institution.

Singh therefore encouraged the gathering to take this opportunity and set up institutions to

ensure quality and easy accessibility to education.

He also appreciated the Missionary Schools for imparting knowledge to the remote areas.

The union minster also mentioned that National Education Policy 2020 was brought about with an agenda for sustainable development and making educational institution more holistic to bring out capability of students.

up with creative ideas to improve education system.

A press release by WENN informed that aligning with WENN’s 2023 theme, “financial literacy”, the workshop was the first in a series of workshops which would be held in eight districts of Nagaland in 2023.

WENN chairwoman, Alemjungla Jamir said the WENN was committed to empowering women entrepreneurs in Nagaland with financial literacy skills that could elevate their businesses and contribute to their financial independence.

Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, JUN 3 (NPN): The new school building of Government Primary School Ikishe, was inaugurated on June 3,

by Principal Accountant General, Nagaland, A Pitoho Chophi. The new school building was constructed by the Round Table India (RTI), an NGO. Addressing the gathering, Chophi acknowledged the RTI for their commendable job in constructing the new school building, and said that their humanitarian work will go a long way in helping students achieve better education.

He also noted that their contribution was a big necessity for Ikishe village.

He fur ther urged the students, teachers and villagers to hold the responsibility of maintaining and taking proper care of the new buildings.

Delivering a shor t speech, member of RTI thanked Ikishe village council for allowing them to assist the village in constructing the school.

He said that students were the future of the nation and that it was the motive of RTI to make the students achieve better education to make the nation stronger and brighter. He said that

on average, RTI inaugurates a classroom everyday across the country.

DIMAPUR: Government High School (GHS) Saring village, under Longchem HQ in Mokokchung district has achieved 100 percent result in High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Examination for the fifth year straight.

To honour the students on their achievements, the school organized a thanksgiving and felicitation ceremony on June 1 at the school campus.

In her speech, DEO Mokokchung, Sentinenla congratulated the students and teachers for securing 100% in HSLC for the straight fifth year. She termed it as a great achievement and maintained that

the success of the school was due to passionate of the teachers, support from the community and the hardwork of the students.

EAC Longchem, N. Orenthung Kikon while congratulating the teachers and the students, said that the mind was the only thing that limits everyone and encouraged the students to never forget what they can achieve if they put their mind into it.

In his felicitation message, teacher-in-charge of the school, Imkongyapang narrated the journey of the school over the last five years. He credited the church leaders for organizing dedication prayer

programme for the students every year, SMDC and village council for their support.

He also thanked the parents for their care and support and congratulated the successful students.

Meanwhile, Saringyim Village Council gave away Rs. 5,000 each to the successful students.

The event was organized by L.I.V.E and Social transformation and educational platform (STEP) consultancy northeast, powered by NorthEast8.

Speaking at the event, resource person director & founder STEP northeast Worrin Muivah said that the objective of the workshop was to enable the gatherings to engage effectively in conversation and become an effective communicator.

The workshop focused on honing the gatherings communication skills, and was done through exercises on non-verbal communication such as body movement, posture, gesture, eye contact, facial expression, volume, pace, pause, fillers, tone and modulation while communicating with an individual and large audience.

At least two incidents have been reported in the last couple of days wherein students fainted in the midst of the scorching heat.

M e a n w h i l e, t h e School Education Department on Saturday asked all the district authorities to advance the school timings to deal with the heatwave conditions.

A few students at the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed High School in Biswanath district fainted during the Saturday morning prayers.

According to an education officer from the district, the students were rushed to the Biswanath Ghat Hospital from where they were shifted to the Biswanath Chariali subdivisional civil hospital.

While they are all out of danger now, the parents

In a related incident, at least 11 students fainted at Sonitpur Jatiya Vidyalaya in Tezpur on Friday due to excessive heat in the classrooms. The situation became chaotic when pupils in classes VII and VIII complained of feeling uncomfortable and few of them fell unconscious in the afternoon.

They were admitted to a hospital in Tezpur.

State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said that the district authorities have been asked to change the school timings if required, considering the heatwave.

“Due to the current heatwave condition, the School Education Department has instructed all the district commissioners to advance school hours to 7:30 a.m. if required, depending upon the district’s situation,” he said.

The Nagaon district administration has already issued an order and advanced school timings.

SHILLONG, JUN 3: A shocking case of sexual assault against 30 minors, both boys and girls has come to the front in a remote village in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills district.

The accused has been identified as Mebanrilang Syiem Shangoi who has been arrested and currently lodged at the Shillong district jail.

The disturbing incident was exposed only on May 31 after a mother of one of the minors lodged a complaint with the police that her 10-year-old-son was sexually assaulted by Shangoi.

After the arrest of the accused, 15 victims came forward and lodged their complaint against Shangoi.

The village heads in the area convened a meeting and slowly more victims started to come forward, which included the niece of the accused.

So far 30 minors have come forward accusing Shangoi had sexually assaulted them over a period of time.

Meanwhile, Shangoi was amember of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), a pressure group active in Khasi-Jaintia areas of Meghalaya.

The group has now distanced itself from the accused saying that the accused has been removed from the HYC.

88 pc wage payment under MNREGS done in May: Govt

NEW DELHI, JUN 3 (PTI): About 88 per cent of wage payments under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme (MGNREGS) was made through the Aadhaar Based Payment System (ABPS) in May, the Union rural development ministry said.

In a statement, the ministry also said that out of the total 14.28 crore active beneficiaries, Aadhaar has been seeded for 13.75 crore. Against these seeded

Aadhaar, 12.17 crore have been authenticated and 77.81 per cent are now already eligible for ABPS, it said.

In May, about 88 per cent of the wage payment was made through the ABPS, the ministry said.

Under the MNREGS, the ABPS has been in use since 2017. “After almost universal availability of Aadhaar number to every adult population, now the Government of India decided to

extend ABPS for beneficiaries under the (employment) scheme. The payment will land through ABPS only to the account associated with ABPS, which means that it is a safer and faster way of payment transfer,” the ministry said. National Payments Corporation of India data shows that there is a higher success percentage to the extent of 99.55 per cent or above where Aadhaar is enabled for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

World leaders mourn loss of lives in Odisha train tragedy LONDON/MOSCOW, JUN 3 (PTI): World leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, expressed their condolences to the families and the Government of India on Saturday over one of the country’s worst train accidents that killed at least 288 people. The accident, involving three trains, is one of the worst in the country and took place in Odisha’s Balasore district on Friday night.

The accident also injured 803 people. Russian President Putin expressed his condolences in a telegram to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Please accept our deep condolences over the tragic aftermath of the train collision in Odisha. We share the grief of those who lost their relatives and close ones in this catastrophe and we hope for a speedy recovery to everyone injured,” says the telegram, published on the Kremlin’s website.

UK Prime Minister Sunak extended his heart-

felt support and admiration to the survivors and those working tirelessly in the rescue operations.

Chinese President Xi sent separate condolence messages to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi over the train accident, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida sent a condolence message to Prime Minister Modi following the train accident. Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi also sent a condolence message to Foreign Minister S Jaishankar. Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau said at this difficult time, Canadians are standing with the people of India.

Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, who is on a fourday visit to India, tweeted, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished speedy recovery to those injured in the accident.

“Saddened to learn of the high death toll in the tragic train accident in Odisha, India. Our condo-

lences for the families of the victims. Wish speedy recovery to the injured,” Pakistan foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari tweeted.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said that he is “deeply saddened” to learn about the train accident in Odisha. He wished for a speedy recovery for all those affected in the accident. Bhutan’s Prime Minster Lotay Tshering tweeted, “Sending prayers to @narendramodi and the people of India as we hear developments of the tragic train crash in Odisha. May the loved ones find strength, as they come to terms with the loss and horror. We share your pain and pray for quick healing.”

The Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani also expressed condolences on the train tragedy. UN General Assembly president Csaba Korosi too expressed his deepest condolences to the families over the tragic train accident. Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen also extended heartfelt condolences to the victims.

A collision of priorities

T

o borrow an old saying, it was something that was waiting to happen and when it did, at least around 290 passengers were killed and over 900 injured in one among the worst train accidents of the decade. The accident involved the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express and SMVB – HWH Superfast Express, both of which derailed near the Bahanaga Bazar railway station in the Balasore district of Odisha Friday at around 6.55 pm. The horrific triple train accident at Balasore, Odisha involved three trains, when a few coaches of the Coromandel Express derailed and hit the parked goods train, and then the YeswantpurHowrah Superfast crashed into the wreckage.

The cumbersome process of extricating trapped passengers, counting the dead and transporting the injured is a race against time. The incident has once again sparked conversations about the safety measures taken by the Indian Railways.

An initial post-accident report of an internal probe by the Indian Railways has found that Friday’s Odisha train accident was likely caused by the failure of the signalling system, officials within the railway board had warned about “serious flaws in the system” and raised concerns on failure of interlocking in February and sought immediate action. The tragic train accident, which apparently happened due to technical failure has further exposed the contrast in the priority accorded by the Central government. The focus on super fast trains and launching of new hi-profile trains intended for political mileage has cast a shadow on train passenger safety. Expectedly, the opposition leaders have raised questions about why the trains involved were not equipped with the indigenously developed anti-collision ‘Kavach’ system, which was announced by the Modi government with a lot of fanfare last year. The Kavach Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) works by deploying the automatic brakes when two trains seem headed for a collision, stopping them in their tracks at a safe distance. In March 2022, the successful trial of Kavach was announced at an event where Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the then Railway Board chairman and CEO were on onboard two trains moving towards each other on the same track. “Several derailments have occurred during the past decade of which include the November 20, 2016, derailment of 14 coaches of the IndoreRajendra Nagar Express killing 152 and injuring 260 near Uttar Pradesh’s Pukhrayan. On May 28, 2010 Jnaneswari Express train heading to Mumbai, crashed near West Bengal’s Jhargram and was then hit by a goods train killing over 145 passengers. On September 9, 2002 the New Delhi-Howrah Rajdhani Express derailed near Bihar’s Rafiganj on the Dhave river killing around 140 people. Excessive traffic and inadequate upgrading of infrastructure are the two main causes of train derailments due to track failures. Also as passenger volume has increased by 59.21% from the level of 344.41 million in October 2021 to 548.36 million in September 2022, track safety is of prime importance, and controlling track, rail and weld failures pose a serious challenge. The use of technology for crack detection such as the ‘Kavach anti-collision system’ need to be urgently implemented for safety instead of focussing only superfast and bullet trains, to prevent mishaps.

Whenever there is doubt, stop at once. Never try to reason it out, saying, “I wonder why I shouldn’t do this?” God instructs us in what we choose; that is, He actually guides our common sense. And when we yield to His teachings and guidance, we no longer hinder His Spirit by continually asking, “Now, Lord, what is Your will?”

Plastic pollution: A serious issue in India W e are now facing our own createdproblems of environmental degradation, fragile ecosystem and human-kind damage though each year over the world each country has been observing World Environment Day on 5th June for 50 years.

This year the world on 5th June is observing World Environment Day on the theme “Beating Plastic Pollution” that was the same in 2018 when India was the host nation. Despite celebrating every year, the World Environment Day, we are still there where we were five years ago. This proves the style of human b e i n g s “ H i g h Ta l k i n g Simple Doing”. No doubt, the e nv i r o n m e n t a l i m p a c t of plastic pollution goes beyond the harm caused to individual animals.

Plastic debris can damage fragile ecosystems, and the chemicals released by degrading plastic can contaminate soil and water.

This can have a ripple effect on the entire food chain.

The most visible impacts of plastic debris are the ingestion, suffocation and entanglement of hundreds of marine species. Keeping these adverse impacts in mind, planners, leaders every year give call to the entire world to check plastic consumption but they never give call for reducing the production of plastic.

Globally production of plastics has risen almost 200 times in seven decades—the average male life expectancy.

It was two million tonnes in 1950 and, in 2021, it had risen to more than 390 mt.

Indeed, by 2050, we are expected to produce almost 4 times the plastics we do today. And going by the scenario today, the OECD projects, plastic waste will almost triple by 2060, with half of all plastic waste still ending up in landfills and less than a fifth recycled.

India is the secondlargest plastic polluter after the US. It produces 3.5 million tonnes of plastic annually, with 25,490 per capita, According a report, India generates around 3.4

million tonnes (MT) of plastic waste. According to the report, which has been prepared in association with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Praxis Global Alliance, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu together contribute 38 per cent to the total plastic waste that is generated in India. As per a report of Marico Innovation Foundation, over a fiveyear period, the plastic consumption in the country has risen at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.7 per cent to 14 MT in the financial year 201617 to 20 million tonnes in 2019-20.

into our ocean. India releases 1.5 crore tons of waste into the Indian Ocean each year and according to a study by Phew Trusts (2022), the plastic waste entering oceans is at an annual rate of 11 metric tonnes, and the massive amount of persistent plastic in the marine debris harms the coastline and marine ecosystems, making the Indian ocean the second most polluted ocean in the world.

Regular beach clean-up and awareness programmes should be conducted instead of annual ones. Many states claim Single Use Plastic above 50 microns is banned, but on the ground, the ban is not effective. Steps can be taken to execute such

legislations.

As the citizen we can help stop plastic pollution by doing our part to reduce our reliance on singleuse plastics. This means avoiding plastic straws, water bottles, and shopping bags whenever possible.

We can also recycle the plastic we do use, and support businesses that are working to reduce their plastic footprint.

Finally, we can spread the word about the issue of plastic pollution and its solutions to help raise awareness.

A plantation guide Introduction Tree plantation drives are conducted every year through various agencies and community groups, especially on the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5). It is a meaningful community activity with the message of caring for the environment, mitigating the impact of climate change, and reversing the damage human activity has on nature.

However, it is also true that such activities are not carefully planned or executed and with little or no follow-up care.

Only a small percentage of the tree saplings survive and huge resources are wasted such as human labour, valuable tree saplings, and management cost. Without proper review, such activities are repeated the following year through planting in the same spots where the plants have died in the previous years.

Therefore, we should pay careful attention to ‘planning’, ‘planting’, and ‘caring’ whenever large plantation drives are carried out.

Planning: 1. Know the purpose of planting. Are you planting for fruit, flower, shade, prevention of soil erosion, forest rejuvenation, reduction of air/noise pollution, privacy screen, wind break, to define ROW?

2. Choose the right plant for the right place. Is the plant variety suitable for the climate and soil? Consider the growth characteristics, leaf patterns, root system, and the matured size of the tree while choosing the location and spacing between plants. A quick Google search can provide the right answers.

Watch out for overhanging wires, surrounding buildings, concrete pavements, etc.

3. Avoid planting for the sake of the one-day program. If the area is under development, for example, a two-lane highway project is ongoing, do not plant there. Plantation can be done in the following seasons after the highway is completed. The roadside is not the only place for tree plantation drives. Consider planting on degraded forest lands, wastelands, public and community lands, borders of agriculture fields, along rivers, canals and streams.

4. Avoid cutting native trees. It is more reasonable to nurture an existing native tree than to cut it and plant a sapling in its place. Cutting down nearby trees to make protection fences for the saplings should be avoided.

Planting: 1. Properly handle the saplings while packing and loading from the nursery and during transport to the plantation

side. Avoid injuries and extreme exposure to sunlight.

2. Dig a hole that is 2 to 3 times wider than the root ball.

The depth can be the same as the size of the root ball.

3. If the roots are overgrown and circling inside the polybag or pot, break up the pattern so that the tree is not choked in the future by its roots.

4. Do not bury the trunk.

Plant at the level where the root flare (where the first main roots attach to the trunks) is at the surface level.

5. Fill the hole gently and firmly and remove air pockets.

Watering helps to remove air pockets. There is no need to use soil amendments. Break the soil you have dug out, remove the weeds and stones, and fill the same back in.

6. P l a n t w i t h a s t a k e (bamboo or wooden stick) in the same hole and loosely tie it to the sapling with a rope. This will help to stabilize the plant and prevent wind breakage.

7. In waterlogged areas, plants can be planted by creating mounds (slightly raised ground, a small hill, or heap of soil).

Caring 1. Around the base of the plant, put 3 to 6 inches thickness of mulch. Straw, leaves, pine needles, grass clippings, and compost can be used as organic

mulch. They keep the soil moist and prevent weeds. Do not let the mulch touch the base of the plant.

2. Protect the plants from grazing cattle. Make tree guards using bamboo or tree branches that are locally available.

3. Aftercare which includes removal of weeds, watering, pruning, etc should be done for a few years till the plants are established. If the day of the plantation drive is followed by a spell of hot and dry weather, regular watering will be vital for the survival of the plants. To entrust volunteers or respective department personnel or village youths to take care of the plants is important for the ultimate success of the plantation drive.

They are fast-growing (some can grow 3 feet a day), can be harvested every 3-5 years, and are super strong (more tensile strength than steel). With powerful machinery at our disposal such as excavators and chainsaws, we can prune a large tree to a manageable size and relocate it if it is an obstruction for another project work. It may take a lifetime for a small sapling to reach that tree size. With some effort, we can enjoy that tree in its glory again by relocating it.

T H I RU VA N A N T H A PURAM, JUNE 3 (PTI): The Kerala government on Saturday said it will hold Haritha Sabhas (green assemblies) across the state as part of World Environment Day on June 5, to evaluate the outcome of the ‘State with No Waste’ campaign held from March 15 to June 1, and to lay down the road map for the future.

The Haritha Sabhas, one of India’s largest awareness campaigns, will be held with the active participation of the Local Self Government (LSG) Institutions, the LSG department said.

“This is for the first time a state in the country is observing the World Environment Day for assessing waste disposal measures taken by all the LSGIs along with spreading its message,” the LSGD said in a release.

The campaign, planned to be implemented in three phases, was aimed at making all the LSGIs in the state garbage-free by 2024, it said.

INDORE, JUN 3 (PTI): A demand for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and reservation benefit to 11 subgroups of the Gorkha community in Madhya Pradesh has been raised during the two-day tour of Nepal Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal “Prachanda” which concluded on Saturday.

Nepali Sanskriti Parishad’s (International) India branch secretary Shailesh Gurung told PTI that they would meet Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan with their demand shortly.

“The Nepalese community see Shivraj Singh Chouhan as its well-wisher.

We demand that 11 subgroups of Gorkhas be given

Gurung said the number of Gorkhas in the health, and in IAS, and IPS was thin, and the quota will connect them to the mainstream. He also demanded the setting up of Nepalese Academy in Bhopal and Indore to promote and conserve their literature, language and culture.

The Delhi High Court on Friday allowed the jailed AAP leader to meet his ailing wife at his residence. Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma directed the Tihar jail superintendent to take Sisodia to his residence to meet his wife from 10 am to 5 pm.

The Union Health Ministry issued a notification on Friday in this regard.

JERUSALEM, JUN 3 (AP): A gunbattle involving an Egyptian border guard in southern Israel along the border left three Israeli soldiers and the Egyptian officer dead Saturday, officials said.

It was a rare instance of deadly violence along the frontier.

Lt. Col. Richard Hecht, an Israeli army spokesperson, said the fighting began overnight when soldiers thwarted a drugsmuggling attempt across the border.

He said several hours later, two soldiers in a guard post were shot and killed. Their bodies were found after the shooting, when they did not respond to radio communications.

Hecht said the killings appeared to be connected to the thwarted drug smuggling

attempt. The army said the Egyptian border guard was killed in a second exchange of fire in which a third Israeli soldier was killed.

The Egyptian military said an Egyptian border guard crossed the border security barrier and exchanged fire with Israeli forces while he was chasing drug traffickers.

It said in a statement that the Egyptian border guard was killed along with three Israeli troops.

Hecht said an investigation was being conducted in full cooperation with the Egyptian army. He said troops were searching for other possible assailants.

It was the first deadly exchange of fire along the Israel-Egypt border in over a decade.

‘First 1000 Days’ launched in Kohima

DIMAPUR: The “First 1000 Days” programme under National Health Mission (NHM) Nagaland was launched in Kohima

by Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Shanavas C on June 1 at the Conference Hall of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kohima Office.

According to a DIPR report, speaking at the programme, Shanavas lamented the habit of people of Nagaland of “taking things very lightly”, pointing out that such attitude may have negative impact, especially in health sector.

He expressed hope that the message of the “first 1000 days” would reach the rural populace through the concerned department, line departments, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and Self-Help Groups (SHGs). He then urged for mass participation to reduce child’s mortality rate.

DC also requested the Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) department to properly work out in making the Village Health Committee (VHC) functional through which

correct information could be disseminated to the people at the village level in eradicating the stigma.

He also urged the concerned department to give due importance to utilizing the machinery and equipment available in the health sector for the welfare of the public.

The objectives of the “First 1000 Days” campaign were highlighted by CMO Kohima, Dr. Tumchobeni, while the agenda on “Importance of ANC & Delivery at the Hospital” was delivered by Medical

Officer, PHC Chunlika, Dr. Cheyale Kath.

During the programme, a talk on “PMMVY Scheme & Nutritional support during the first 1000 days” was presented by the district co-ordinator, PMMVY, Depar tment of Social Welfare, Vidi Solo, while medical officer, Porterlane UPHC, Dr. Azhanuo Khezhie spoke on “Breastfeeding: The Complete Nutrition & Early Childhood Development”. A short introduction on the “Importance of Vaccination in Children” was given by Regional Project Officer, UNDP, Imli Longkumer; “SBCC through SHG Institution” its initiatives were highlighted by the State Program Manager, SISD (NSRLM), Department of Rural Development; “Village Health Sanitation & Nutrition Day and Convergence for Health” was highlighted by Medical Officer, Seikhazou UPHC, Dr. Bival Yalie.

During the launching programme, a video on the “First 1000 Days” was also released.

NEW DELHI, JUN 3 (PTI): Former India captain Virat Kohli and Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, among several other sportspersons, expressed their anguish over the devastating train accident in Odisha’s Balasore district, that has killed at least 238 people and injured more than 900.

The train crash on Friday, involving the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express and a goods train, is one of the deadliest such accidents since independence.

Officials in Bhubaneswar said 200 ambulances, 50 buses and 45 mobile health units were working at the accident site,

besides 1,200 personnel. The bodies were being taken to the hospitals in all kinds of vehicles, including tractors.

Kohli, who is in England with the India team for the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval from June 7, wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.

“Saddened to hear about the tragic train accident in Odisha. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost their loved ones and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured,” tweeted Kohli. India’s first individual Olympic gold medallist, rifle shooter Abhinav Bindra, he had been left heartbroken by the news of the accident.

“Heartbreaking news from Odisha about the devastating train accident. My heart goes out to all those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Please, let’s all extend our support and prayers to them. May the injured recover swiftly,” tweeted Bindra, the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medallist in 10m air rifle.

The train crash, the fourth deadliest in India according to available records, happened near the Bahanaga Baazar station in Balasore district, about 250km south of Kolkata and 170km north of Bhubaneswar, around 7 pm on Friday, prompting the Railway Ministry to order a probe.
