Withdraw Aug 3 NLA resolution: NPCC
TERMS IT AS BLANK CHEQUE FOR TERRITORIAL COUNCIL IN INTANGKI parties had concluded talks for Nagaland on October 31,2019. NPCC said while Naga stakeholders aspire for early solution and for one government and one tax; the state government, owing to its inability to enforce the law of the land, has instead chosen to “reverse the clock and adopt the route of compromise in the garb of facilitation.” In this, NPCC said the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) after ignoring all the agreements and talks for the past 24 years and the voice of the stakeholders, adopted a fivepoint resolution on August 3,2021, “demanding that the government of India resume talks.”
NPCC claimed there are enough hints on “carving out Territorial Council with Ntangki National Reserve Forest” and that the Nagaland Legislative Assembly resolution can be construed as “blank cheque approval to carve out Ntangki Territorial Council or otherwise.” According to NPCC, only parliament as per Article 3, has authority to increase or decrease or alter state boundaries or rename names. Therefore, considering all the above, the extended executive committee of NPCC resolved to demand that the NLA “withdraw the five-point resolution adopted on 3rd August, 2021.”

and setting of the Sun,” he said. “However, in modern times and in the eagerness to race ahead, man disturbed the balance of nature and caused great harm to the environment. If we want to re-establish a life in balance with nature, the path to this life can only be lit by our Sun. In order to protect the future of mankind, we must go together with the Sun,” he said. Calling for ‘One Sun, One World, One Grid’, Modi said it was the solution to tackle the challenge of solar power available only during the day. “In one hour, the earth’s atmosphere receives enough sunlight to power the electricity needed by every human being on earth for a year. This unlimited energy is completely clean and sustainable. The only challenge is that solar energy is only available during the day and is dependent on weather conditions. One Sun, One World, One Grid is a solution for this very challenge.
MENLO PARK, NOV 2 (AP): Facebook said it will shut down its face-recognition system and delete the faceprints of more than 1 billion people. “This change will represent one of the largest shifts in facial recognition usage in the technology’s history,” said a blog post Tuesday from Jerome Pesenti, vice president of artificial intelligence for Facebook’s new parent company, Meta. “More than a third of Facebook’s daily active users have opted in to our Face Recognition setting and are able to be recognized, and its removal will result in the deletion of more than a billion people’s individual facial recognition templates.” He said the company was trying to weigh the positive use cases for the technology “against growing societal concerns, especially as regulators have yet to provide clear rules.”
D I M A P U R , N OV 2 (NPN): Against the backdrop of general expectation of an impending settlement to the Naga political issue, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), held a meeting to deliberate on the matter at its extended executive committee meeting on October 29. According to chairman communication department of NPCC, the party observed that the Naga political settlement has taken a paradigm shiftearlier from historical aspiration of sovereignty and integration of all contiguous Naga inhabited areas, to now, threatening Nagaland state with infiltration and division. NPCC reminded that Nagaland state
NEW DELHI, NOV 2 (PTI): Emphasising that everything is created from Sun, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called for ‘One Sun, One World, One Grid’ to improve the viability of solar power and announced that India’s space agency ISRO will soon provide the world a calculator that can measure solar energy potential of any region across the globe. Addressing world leaders at the event ‘Accelerating Clean Technology Innovation and Deployment’ on the sidelines of the climate summit here, Modi said that fossil fuel powered many nations to become wealthy during the industrial revolution, but it made the earth and environment poor. “The industrial revolution was powered by fossil fuels. Several countries prospered by the use of fossil fuels but it also left our Earth and environment poorer. The race for fossil fuels also created geopolitical tensions. However, today,
was constituted as the 16th state of the Indian union on December 1,1963. NPCC said the Framework Agreement (FA) signed on August 3,2015 at the PM’s residence “agreed to settle the political problem within union of India and that interstate boundaries shall not be changed”. NPCC said this confirmed the claim and stand of the government of India, that “sovereignty and integration are non-negotiable.” In the light of the above, NPCC said the Working Committee (WC) of the 7-member NNPGs also signed the Agreed Position (AP) with the government of India on November 17,2017 and that both

technology has presented us with a better alternative,” he said. Citing the ‘Suryopanishad’ during his address, Modi said that everything was born from Sun, Sun is the only source of energy and solar energy can take care of everyone. “In India, it has been mentioned in the ancient text, in the Suryopanishad, that everything is created from the Sun, the source of all energy is the Sun and it is the energy from the Sun that nurtures all. ment polytechnic at Aboi was functioning without a single teaching staff, but students were made to join class with other polytechnics through online mode. Stating that other polytechnic colleges were functioning with smart board and smart class, ENCSU has, however, said that Aboi polytechnic was without any educator, which it described was “a pure form of ‘discrimination’.” Further, ENCSU pointed out Wak-
ching New Model College, which was inaugurated on February 3, 2019, was still lying paralyzed. The union said several representations had been submitted, but the responsible authority chose to turn a deaf ear to its genuine demand. In the light of the above, the ENCSU has sought clarification from the directorate and state government as to why Aboi polytechnic was still without a

S H I L LO N G, N OV 2 (PTI): The residents of Punjabi Lane at Them Iew Mawlong in Shillong on Tuesday vowed to give “sleepless nights” to the Meghalaya government for its decision to relocate them. The state government had last week taken possession of the 12,444.13 sq m land at Iew Mawlong to relocate the residents of the colony. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said Rs 2 crore was given to Syiem of Hima Mylliem -the local cheftian, and the Urban Affairs Department will beautify the area. Singh said it was a fight for their survival and habitat and no effort will be spared to stop the government’s move. “The tripartite agree-
ment between the Government of Meghalaya, the Acting Syiem of Hima Mylliem and the Shillong Municipal Board is illegal, malafide and a clear violation of the constitutional and fundamental rights of the residents of Punjabi Lane, whose forefathers came here some 200 years ago and who have served Meghalaya honestly and diligently doing manual scavenging and other menial tasks,” he said. AG A RTA L A , N OV 2 (IANS): Members of five tribal organisations of Tripura held a protest on Monday in front of Bangladesh Assistant High Commission here condemning the attack and torching of the Katakhali Forest Buddhist Monastery under Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar district in the neighbouring country. A joint statement of the five tribal organisations on Monday said that at least 8 indigenous persons, including women, belonging to the Chakma community were injured during the attack on October 24. These organisations submitted a memorandum to Bangladesh Prime Min-

The memorandum said that the attack on the Katakhali Forest Buddhist Monastery took place following a series of incidents of vandalism and arson of Hindu temples, Durga Puja pandals and attacks on Hindu minorities from October 13, which shows that the government of Bangladesh has not taken any measure to ensure protection of the religious minorities in the country. “This is because the government of Bangladesh as on date has failed to punish those who destroyed 19 Buddhist temples and
about 100 houses at Ramu, Cox’s Bazar and Patiya of Chittagong in 2012,” the memorandum said. These organisations in their statement said: “The Bangladesh government has the responsibility to protect the life, property and right of the religious minorities to practice their religion.” The tribal organisations demanded to bring the perpetrators of the attack on the Katakhali Forest Buddhist Monastery and attack on at least eight indigenous persons belonging to the Chakma community to justice and ensure prosecution of those who destroyed 19 Buddhist temples and about 100 houses at Ramu, Cox’s Bazar and Patiya of Chittagong in 2012 through fast track courts. Nawab Malik digs out chats of drug peddler and Wankhede’s sister
that the peddler, Salman even tried to trap him and his family and lodged a fake police complaint earlier this year, but nothing came out of it. Malik also slammed Wankhede for his lavish lifestyle of wearing expensive watches worth Rs 25 lakh or above, shoes, shirts worth Rs 70,000, or T-shirts of Rs 30,000 and asked how the officer claiming to be honest and upright could afford such extravagance. He accused Wankhede of running “a private army” comprising people like Kiran Gosavi, Manish Bhanushali (both having BJP links), Fletcher
Patel, Adil Usmani, Sam D’Souza, through which he extorted crores of rupees by framing people in fake cases. H e s a i d l a s t ye a r Wankhede had summoned top stars like Deepika Padukone, Shraddha Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan and others for questioning after which there was no development for 14 months. “If there’s no case or charge sheet, then close it… Cases are deliberately kept open for extortion purposes,” Malik alleged. Responding to Malik’s charges, Yasmeen Wankhede pointed out that their mother’s wealth was bequeathed to her brother since he was a teenager and dismissed the allegations of an extravagant lifestyle suggested by the NCP minister. Malik questioned the BJP’s Fadnavis on the details of the lavish parties thrown at a luxury hotel where dr ug deals were cracked and asked why he did not probe them when he was the CM.

Humbly accept verdict in bypolls: Himachal CM
NEW DELHI, NOV 2 (IANS): The Jammu and Kashmir administration has sacked a Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy SP) Prison and a school principal for having terror links, sources said here on Tuesday. Dy SP Feroz Ahmad Lone and the principal of the Government Senior Secondary School at Bijbehra Javid Ahmad Shah have been terminated from service for actively working with terrorist outfits after the Union Territory administration invoked Sec 311 (2) (c) of the Constitution to sack the two employees after an investigation clearly established their terror links. The sources said that DSP Lone, appointed in 2012 during Omar Abdullah’s tenure as the Chief Minister of the erstwhile state, hatched a criminal conspiracy with terror commanders to send youths illegally to Pakistanoccupied Kashmir (PoK)

Goa deserves capable leadership, it deserves Cong: Rahul Gandhi NEW DELHI, NOV 2 (PTI): Ahead of the Goa Assembly elections early next year, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the state deserves capable leadership and congenial development. He posted a three-minute video of his interactions with the people of Goa during his recent visit to the state. “Goa deserves capable leadership. Goa deserves cultural conservation. Goa deserves congenial development. Goa deserves Congress. I stand with Goa for a better tomorrow,” Gandhi said on Twitter. Gandhi, in his speech-
es, has favoured legal mining and said “the most important thing Goa has is the environment and that has to be protected at all costs”. “We are pretty clear that we do not want Goa to be a coal hub when it does not benefit Goa to be a coal hub,” he also said during one of his events in the state. Kickstarting the Congress’ poll campaign in Goa, Gandhi on Saturday asserted that the assurances of the Congress in its election manifesto will not just be a commitment but a “guarantee”, as not keeping the word will dent his credibility.
couraging and I think public attitude is changing. This is a very significant result for us. The defeat of the BJP shows that the popularity of BJP among the people has fallen,” he told reporters. Senior Congress leader and former union minister Anand Sharma, who had campaigned in the bypolls, said the clean sweep and victories for Pratibha Singh and wins by Rohit Thakur, Sanjay Awasthi and Bhawani Singh Pathania despite the massive use of power, authority and resources are a “clear rejection of the anti-people policies of the BJP and betrayal of the mandate”. “The tide has turned, and the countdown has begun for the BJP,” he said. arrival to Ishaq Palla. However, getting unsatisfactory replies to their queries, the jail staff refused to give permission to Danish and Sohail to meet Palla and ordered them out of the jail premises. “When Rasool and Bhat were denied permission, Palla approached jail Dy SP Feroz Lone who after consulting with Ishaq Palla misused his official position and assisted in the issuance of passes in respect of both Danish and Sohail”, the sources said, adding that the Dy SP personally went to the reception area and brought both Danish and Sohail inside the prison premises to meet Ishaq Palla. It was in this meeting that a criminal conspiracy was hatched to send Danish and Sohail to PoK for arms training to join terrorist ranks to wage war against the Union of India. Both were arrested before they could cross over to Pakistan, they added.

NEW DELHI, NOV 2 (PTI): The CBI on Tuesday filed two charge sheets related to the alleged leak of confidential information about two different naval projects, officials said. This is one of the quickest probes in defence corruption cases as the agency filed charge sheet within 60 days of the first arrests made on September 3 to ensure that the arrested accused do not get easy bail. In one of the charge sheets, the CBI named retired naval officers --Commodore Randeep Singh and Commander SJ Singh -- while in the second case, besides these two, serving Commander Ajeet Kumar Pandey, and three executives of Hyderabad-based Allen Reinforced Plastics Ltd -- executive director TP Shastri and directors NB Rao and K Chandrasekhar -- have been listed.

The CBI has arrested six persons including the two accused retired officers, Pandey, another serving officer under him and two private individuals in an operation which started on September 3. One of the naval officers under custody has not been named in the charge sheet and may be listed in the supplementary charge sheet to be filed soon. The CBI has to file a charge sheet within 60 days of arrest of accused in corruption cases, else they become eligible for bail. The limit for special crime cases is 90 days. “We have filed two separate charge sheets as we are probing the role of the accused in the two different naval projects,” an official said. In its charge sheets filed before a special CBI court at Rouse Avenue, the CBI has slapped section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code and provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act. The case began when the agency received the input that some serving of-

It is alleged that the serving officers of Commander rank in Navy were allegedly leaking confidential information to their retired officers in return for pecuniary gains. The sources said further probe is continuing and the role of some foreign nationals is also under scanner. The Anti Corruption unit of the agency, which handles sensitive and high profile corruption cases, was tasked to unearth the leakage of information following which the operation was started, they said. The unit has questioned several other officers and ex-servicemen who were in regular touch with the arrested officer and retired personnel, they said.

s the commercial hub of Nagaland and also having a mix population from across states of the region and most parts of India; it may not be wrong to describe Dimapur as “mini India” to some extent. The population of Dimapur district is 4,14,921 of which 1,22,834 are in Dimapur City(Urban) alone and around twenty to thirty thousand floating population mostly labourers and traders from nearby Karbi Anglong etc. Dimapur is connected by road with Assam and Manipur besides Kohima and Mokokchung and air with other parts of India. Dimapur is also linked by small roads and paths with nearby Karbi Anglong. Dimapur’s border with Assam is so porous that it is almost impossible to plug the inlet and outlet. Therefore, policing a place like Dimapur district is a challenging task as the system needs to evolve concepts and strategies for effective enforcement of the rule of against rising number of offenders and those who enjoying patronage of politicians including parallel authorities all of which, have practically circumvented the process of law enforcement. As a result, the four pillars of policing-prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution- have suffered tremendously over the years. Tackling crimes, in Dimapur has become a heated subject against the backdrop of serious crimes and other offences that have frustrated the efforts of authorities in regaining lost ground. Even if number of cases have concluded with accused taken for trial, the system has also allowed them to be let off; first as bail on medical and other specious grounds and secondly when they end up perpetually absconding but no legal action on the guarantors. The friction between the police and judiciary over the years has also only compounded the problem of law enforcement. The state police has significant number of officers who are second to none in the country and who have, time and again, proved themselves as excellent policemen under adverse situations. If the law is to be effectively enforced, the police must have the right officers in the right place and brook any political interference. The adverse impact on the force can be seen in the systemic de-institutionalisation of the force, which has led to their overstepping the limits of law more frequently, in greater dimension, more daringly and in a variety of bizarre ways. It is also crucial that police reforms be implemented as it relates to transparency and accountability in selection of officers and men based on pure merit and ability. Nagaland has thrice the number of armed police over the civil police(DEF) like Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura. The multi task of prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of crime rests with the DEF, but the over focus on armed battalions have affected the outlook of the force. That is the catch that has caused problems in the system. If the state politicians are as serious and as sincere as they sound when they speak about tackling crimes, then they must effect a major overhaul of the policing system. Nagaland Police enjoys a good reputation as a professional fighting force and given the right leadership, training and motivation and independence, it has the potential of achieving new heights. Putting an end to political and bureaucratic interference in the force would be a Herculean task but that is a small price to pay for the huge cost of criminalization of the system and society.
DailyDevotion Obedience or Independence?
If you love Me, keep My commandments. —John 14:15 Our Lord never insists on obedience. He stresses very definitely what we ought to do, but He never forces us to do it. We have to obey Him out of a oneness of spirit with Him. That is why whenever our Lord talked about discipleship, He prefaced it with an “If,” meaning, “You do not need to do this unless you desire to do so.” “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself…” (Luke 9:23). In other words, “To be My disciple, let him give up his right to himself to Me.” Our Lord is not talking about our eternal position, but about our being of value to Him in this life here and now. That is why He sounds so stern (see Luke 14:26). Never try to make sense from these words by separating them from the One who spoke them. The Lord does not give me rules, but He makes His standard very clear. If my relationship to Him is that of love, I will do what He says without hesitation. If I hesitate, it is because I love someone I have placed in competition with Him, namely, myself. Jesus Christ will not force me to obey Him, but I must. And as soon as I obey Him, I fulfill my spiritual destiny. My personal life may be crowded with small, petty happenings, altogether insignificant. But if I obey Jesus Christ in the seemingly random circumstances of life, they become pinholes through which I see the face of God. Then, when I stand face to face with God, I will discover that through my obedience thousands were blessed. When God’s redemption brings a human soul to the point of obedience, it always produces. If I obey Jesus Christ, the redemption of God will flow through me to the lives of others, because behind the deed of obedience is the reality of Almighty God.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2021
Post-mortem
Jhum Cultivation is prerequisite for sustaining local food security As a way of introduction: I was fortunate to be a part of NEN Farm School program as the valedictory speaker on the topic “Building a Sustainable Future and Responsibility of Youths”. NEN, Chizami, organised this training program under the theme: “Bridging the Farm-to-Plate-Gap,” with participants from various states of North East India. During the experience sharing, one of the participants told us that he was able to count 20 (twenty) variety of crops grown in the jhuming field. It reminds me about the importance of jhum cultivation for maintaining local food security, food diversity and sustainable environment. Attempts of the state to abolish jhum cultivation: Recently, the Central government has allocated Rs. 20 Crore for rehabilitation of shifting/jhum cultivation in Nagaland state. For years, shifting cultivation,’ ‘jhum cultivation,’ ‘slash and burn method ‘or ‘swidden’ have been continuously under the scanner of policy makers for its productivity and ecological viability. There are peoples who consider jhum/shifting cultivation as unproductive and ecologically disastrous. Those who practice it are branded as uncivilised and undeveloped people (say villagers). This practice is considered as the sole factor of degradation of soil and forests. Hence farmers/villagers are urged to become ‘progressive farmers’ (favourite phrase of modern capitalists) by shifting from traditional type of cultivation to mono-cash crop cultivation. This, according to
them, will ensure livelihood security of the susceptible tribals and preserve forest wealth. I am apprehensive whether eradication of the age-old practice of jhum cultivation that has been the subsistence economy for tribal people since time immemorial years will be really a wise decision. However, in this mad rushing world blinded by mammon, everything is measured in terms of money value including human beings. Jhum cultivation versus modern agriculture: Many people (so called modern-educated people) wanted to eradicate jhum cultivation and replace it with a new scientific approach in order to gain high yield. This would enable farmers to come out of poverty. To do this, farmers have to get inputs (seeds, chemicals, fertilizers, production tools etc) from the companies. The signs of the times tell us that it is high time to seriously study the various traditional methods of agriculture practiced by our fore-parents for centuries and revive them. Traditional type of agriculture maintains biodiversity and ecological balance and ensured food security for everyone. In jhum field, varieties of crops are grown in a year. Whereas, in cash cropping, only one type of crop is grown (monocropping). This affects the quality of air, water, and soil as well as gives big burden to living creatures to either adapt to the changes or die. Modern agriculture does not really alleviate mass poverty. It needs technical knowledge to handle. The climate has to be
very suitable. The time of sowing, transplanting and harvesting must be done at the right time. It needs good storage, transport and market. Otherwise it would go waste. It needs lots of fertilizers, pesticides and chemicals to get maximum yield. This gives huge burden to eco-system. It is labour intensive. Most of the cash crops have to be sold to certain company. Farmers have no right to ask for higher price. It is completely under the monopoly of Companies. When crops failed (for various reasons), farmers are heavily indebted leading to suicide. Jhum cultivation as source of livelihood and culture: Our fore-parents have been practicing jhum cultivation for centuries. It is this practice that moulds and shapes our civilization since then. We were all cradled and brought up through the tradition of jhuming agriculture. It was part and parcel of tribal society from time immemorial. It was and is tribal’s culture (in fact the word ‘culture’ comes from agriculture). Jhum field provides platform for tribal people to work together. The spirit of solidarity is thus maintained. Many songs, dances and stories were composed based on jhum cultivation. In jhuming field, people worship gods/spirits - with many rites and rituals performedfor seed sowing, ploughing, and for harvesting. Can our people carry forward the ‘spirituality’ of jhum cultivation to cash cropping? In subsistence economy, people worship gods/spirit. In cash economy people
worship money and the capitalist. In jhum field they sing song together while working. In it, people share the produce with another (which can never happen with cash crop). Our people have a great sense of respect for nature. They have a well-guarded time-table for jhum cultivation giving enough time for nature to regenerate. Jhum cultivation provides both livelihood and culture. A good lesson can be learnt from Khonoma Village (Nagaland) whose villagers have been successfully practicing jhum cultivation for centuries providing local food security and also without affecting the ecological health. The state needs to give special attention to farmer’s security for they are the backbone of our economy. If every village’s economy is well developed, we will have abundant food with healthy environment. Cor r uption is the main cause of backwardness not jhum cultivation: Tribal people’s method of cultivation may appear to be ‘crude’ and ‘undeveloped’. But it has sustained life since time immemorial. I have not heard of tribal people who had died of starvation and hunger. I have not heard of ‘beggar’ in tribal society. Although each year’s harvest is crucial, their economic system –based on sharing and nature friendly method- keeps them alive at all times. Unfortunately, many town dwellers and educated people look down on villagers although they survive through the labour of farmers. Go and see those villagers living in faraway interior places. They lack nothing as far as food is concerned al-
though they suffer of modern infrastructures. This is because of corruption in the government administration. If there is no corruption in the state’s administration and all welfare schemes reach the villagers, they will not suffer for anything. For instance, if Public Distribution System (PDS) works well and reach the targeted masses, the living condition of villagers will be enhanced to a great extend. If government’s institutions such as school and health work effectively in villages, children will get quality education. If the roads connecting to villages are well constructed, they will be able to trade off their produce and earn good amount. If all the schemes for the villagers reach them, they will be able to take care of natural resources. But because of corruption, the villagers were forced to exploit natural resources to meet their needs. Hence, corruption of all forms in government offices needs to be dealt with iron hand, not only to enhance villager’s living standard but also to save natural resources. Concluding remark: For any type of cultivation soil erosion and ecological degradation will be there but is lesser in jhum cultivation. Daman Singh, the Daughter of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in her book, “The Last Frontier: People and Forests in Mizoram” stated “that a jhum system in which the land is cultivated for a single year, causes less soil and water loss than modern systems of agriculture and horticulture. The relatively low extent and intensity of cultivation together with
rapid regeneration, does not result in any climatic change due to deforestation in the jhums. The use of burnt vegetation makes far more economic and financial sense than the application of chemical fertilizer. The act of burning has many benefits other than building up soil fertility, and is an operation normally carried out with reasonable care”. Thus comparatively, jhum cultivation is more viable than modern agriculture in our context. It is high time for government to do intensive research on jhum cultivation and not to take decision in haste to abolish it. Jhum cultivation is not just an economic activity. It has social dimension where communitarian spirit is maintained. It has religious dimension where the relationship with gods/spirits is established. It has political dimension where land boundaries are demarcated. To eradicate jhum cultivation altogether is not feasible. However, we can talk of ‘upgradation’ or ‘improvement’ of jhum cultivation including planting more trees in and around the jhum field. Research has to be build on strong relationship between social actors and pooling of age-old local technical knowledge with new knowledge from science and technology. In this regard, NEN, Chizami, has many things to teach us. For a sustainable local food security, for healthy living and for healthy environment, the practice of jhum cultivation should be encouraged and maintained. Z. K. Pahrü Pou, Mission Colony, Pfutsero
Educational Vision: Best practices in school governance and management
E
ducational vision is an image of the future of students we seek to create. It is a vision which fosters the skills, mindsets and attributes required for students to be effective learners and find success in an increasingly unpredictable world. Educational vision is a statement or planning ahead to teach all children to acquire and develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to succeed at all stages of their education and equip them with high aspirations for their future lifelong learning. It is the capacity of creating futures of the learners that leads to commitments and goals. It also refers to a standard that guides an institution or school’s internal decision-making and aligns with its goals. Educational vision aims for an institution’s high-level goals for the future or what we hope to achieve if we successfully fulfill our organizational purpose through the best practices in school governance and management. Vision for education, as a teacher should hope to help the students learn how to combat the negative feelings and stereotypes that plague our society. Rather, empowering them to see that they have the ability to be a great generation. Our responsibility in their lives is to ensure that our students are getting the best education we can provide tapping into the resources of our school, parents and the community so that they can succeed in whatever area they choose. In Nagaland, the availability and accessibility of quality education is linked to long-term learning outcomes at it still remains a major issue. Teacher related issues like, irregularity in performance of duties in government schools, engagement of proxy teachers, irregular capacity building and training of teachers, lack of updated knowledge base as well as new teaching techniques by the teachers that could benefit in-classroom and out-of-classroom student teachers’ interaction are the challenges faced by the state towards improving the quality of education. The untimely transfer of
teachers during the academic session results in disturbance and affects the schools’ academic activities. Teacher shortage has been a common challenge at the school, higher and technical education levels. In Nagaland, there are excess teachers in many government schools. But some schools especially in remote areas are run only by one or two teachers. There is a major shortage of science and mathematics teachers at the upper primary level (classes 6-8) and the high school level (classes 9-10) which lands to the appointment of unqualified and untrained private teachers to take up the particular subjects in the government schools. As a result, every year it also leads to poor performance in HSLC and HSSLC state board examination. There is a lack of participation by civil society, village council chairman and members, VDB, VEC and the parents of students, particularly in rural areas where parents are less educated and may not see value in contributing to their children’s schooling. In government schools, there are often delays in school- related supplies like, delivery of textbooks and other teacher and student materials. Best practices in school governance School governance has an important role in ensuring that schools in particular perform well and continually seek to improve overall quality of education and also aims to transform the education system in the state. School governance is perhaps the largest collective voluntary endeavor in the state or country. Every school has a governing body and the ways in which schools are governed needs to change because of new approaches and methods of teaching and learning. The new National Education Policy aims to facilitate an inclusive, participatory and holistic approach which takes into consideration field experiences, empirical research, stakeholder feedback, as well as lessons learned from best practices. It is a progressive shift towards a scientific approach to education. If implemented in its true vision of education, the new
curriculum structure can bring our state, Nagaland at par with leading states in the countries of the world. There should be five different steps that need to be followed for a school to be well governed. The first step is to be efficient and effective.Efficiency is getting the best result from the resources, students or people in the school and in the community. The school board and the staff of the school led by the head teacher or headmaster need to make sure that they run a good school which teaches pupils to learn diligently. The students, parents, community members, neighborhood and the students’ body or unions can all help the school to run successfully. The second step is accountability which is a fundamental requirement of good school governance. The school needs to be accountable to parents, community members, school community, staff and its learners for parents-teachers meeting, school board meetings, annual general meetings, periodic evaluation of students’ performance, planning of academic calendar, and reports on pupils’ progress. The third step is transparency which means being open, honest and easy to see. Transparency practice in school governance can be used to stop corruption. Common forms of corruption in education in the state are bribery, fraud, extortion, abuse of discretion, favoritism, nepotism and improper political contributions. School governance can ensure transparency by doing assessment and monitoring, access to information, ethics and integrity, institutional reforms and targeting specific issues. The fourth step is equity which is about fair treatment. People are different and sometimes they have different needs. For example, a disabled learners who needs to use a wheelchair might need a ramp and other things to get into the classroom and around the school. The school must recognize that some children will have special needs in their learning.Equity practices at school means that the school
needs to be a place that can help everyone to be treated fairly. The school’s rules and practices must allow everyone, rich or poor, disabled, male or female to be included in discussions and decisions for the school and for children’s safety and education. School must become responsible for successful, changes and for development in children’s learning. The fifth step is community involvement and citizen participation. A school that works well needs the support and active participation of the citizens in the community so that it can go on working well and serving the community. To achieve learning and positive impact at community and school level, where parents are more involved in the welfare of their children, the school’s governance practices is monitored and relevant information is available to all citizens and learners are prioritized. Best practices in school management The success of every school depends on the way it is managed. The need for the efficient management of school has placed much more emphasis on the nature and quality of the work of the head teacher and head master as the leader of a team of professional educators and as the manager of the supply and effective use of resources like human, financial and material. The school head therefore needs to gain clear understanding of all the forces and factors which contribute towards management of the school. School management may be defined as an art and science in coordinating human and material resources of the school in such a way as to attain the objectives to optimal level of satisfaction of those served and with a high degree of morale and sense of attainment on the part of those rendering the service. School management also refers to the managerial process through which efforts of people in the educational system are controlled, directed and supervised towards the accomplishment and realization of educational goals and objectives.
The practices in school management can be done in four different categories 1. influenced by the public welfare-centric ideology of the BJP.” Singh also attacked SP president Akhilesh Yadav, alleging he makes statement to appease certain sections of the society. “Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who laid the foundation for the division of India, Akhilesh Yadav termed him great, and compared him with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who united the country. Which path does Akhilesh Yadav want to take the country on?” Singh added that there was a time, when the people of the Congress, SP and BSP used to feel afraid of going to a temple and putting on a ‘tilak’. “Owing to appeasement by the Congress, the level of politics has declined. They had rejected the existence of Prabhu Shri Ram, and had termed him imaginary. India functions as per the thought of Lord Ram. The BJP is moving ahead taking the ‘tyaag’ (sacrifice) and ‘tapasya’ (penance),” he said.

NEW DELHI, NOV 2 (IANS): Defending their party president Akhilesh Yadav’s decision of not contesting the Assembly polls, Samajwadi Party leaders on Tuesday claimed that in the past also several leaders, including incumbent Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, did not contest the polls. The Chief Ministers from 2007 till now have been the members of the upper house in the state, they said. Soon after Yadav’s announcement on Monday, the Opposition tore into the SP saying that the decision
was taken as the party had lost all hopes of winning. Samajwadi Par ty spokesperson Rajiv Rai said that the party, not the parliamentary board, will decide who will contest elections. As far as the BJP is concerned, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and both the Deputy Chief Ministers Dinesh Sharma and Keshav Lal Maurya are members of the Legislative Council. During his last term as the Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav was a Legislative Council member. He had not contested the 2012 elections. Similarly, BSP
supremo Mayawati who has been Chief Minister four times was a MLC but not a MLA. Yogi Adityanath is also a MLC. He did not contest the elections in 2017 when the BJP stormed into power but he was the MP from Gorakhpur and was later elected leader of the Legislative party. Keshav Lal Maurya and Dinesh Sharma are both MLCs elected after being appointed as ministers. For the Assembly polls, Akhilesh, the MP from Azamgarh, will be the face of his party’s campaign, Rai said.
MUMBAI, NOV 2 (PTI): A Mumbai court on Tuesday remanded former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh to the Enforcement Directorate’s custody till November 6 in connection with a multi-crore money laundering case. Deshmukh, arrested by by ED late Monday night after over 12 hours of questioning in the money laundering case linked to an alleged extortion racket in the state police establishment, was produced for remand before additional sessions judge P B Jadhav, who presided over the special holiday court, a little after noon. Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, appearing for the ED, sought 14-day custody of the NCP leader, stating that the custodial interrogation was required to carry out further probe into the case and to check the money trail. Deshmukh’s counsel
Vikram Chaudhri and advocate Aniket Nikam, however, opposed it and argued that the ED had no locus to investigate. The Bombay High Court had only directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the allegations against Deshmukh. No one asked the ED to investigate, Chaudhri told the court. He further informed the court that Deshmukh (71) is a senior citizen whose shoulder is dislocated and hence, he needs constant support. “He suffered from COVID-19 this February and is suffering from heart ailments and hypertension,” Chaudhri said. Before producing him in the court, the prosecuting agency had taken the NCP leader to the state-run J J Hospital for a regular medical checkup. After the ED arrested Deshmukh on Monday

night under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the agency officials had claimed the senior NCP leader was evasive during questioning. The ED had initiated a probe against Deshmukh and his associates after the CBI filed its FIR against the NCP leader on April 21 on charges of corruption and misuse of official position. The ED’s case is that Deshmukh, while serving as home minister, misused his official position and through dismissed cop Sachin Waze collected Rs 4.70 crore from various bars and restaurants in Mumbai. The money was allegedly laundered to Nagpurbased Shri Sai Shikshan Sanstha, an education trust controlled by Deshmukh’s family. Deshmukh had refuted these allegations earlier and said the agency’s whole case was based on malicious statements made by a tainted cop (Waze). The ED has so far arrested two persons in the case – Sanjeev Palande (additional collector-rank official who was working as Deshmukh’s private secretary) and Kundan Shinde (Deshmukh’s personal assistant). The agency last month submitted its prosecution complaint (equivalent to a charge sheet) against the duo before a special court.

PANAJI, NOV 2 (IANS): The only way to counter rising fuel prices was to end the country’s dependency on imported fuel and to manufacture alternative fuels in India, Union Minister for Road Transport and National Highways Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday. “The only solution is stop depending on imported fuel and manufacture alternative fuel in our country,” he told a press conference in Panaji.“We import 80 per cent fuel. I am introducing flex engines. Flex engine bikes and scooters. That means, you can use 100 per cent petrol or 100 per cent ethanol. Ethanol is Rs 65 per litre,” he said. Gadkari said this in response to a question about how the rising fuel prices could be combated. The Minister also said that flex engines, which can adapt to both petrol and alternative fuels like ethanol, would be made mandatory in India in six months.

MUMBAI, NOV 2 (IANS): India’s major automobile manufacturers posted subdued sales numbers for October on the back of production issues caused due to a global shortage of electronic components. High fuel cost and longer waiting periods also dampened the sales momentum. In terms of sales, auto major Maruti Suzuki India’s October total sales fell over 24 per cent to 138,335 units in October 2021 from 182,448 units sold during the corresponding period of last year. Besides, the company’s total domestic sales including passenger and commercial vehicles in addition to off-take by other OEMs fell during the month under review. The sales fell to 117,013 units last month from 172,862 sold in October 2020 . However, it reported its highest-ever monthly exports of 21,322 units in October 2021. “While the shortage of electronic components continued to affect the production of vehicles during the month, the company took all possible measures
to minimise the impact,” the automaker said in a statement. “Accordingly, the company sold more vehicles than the sales volume expected at the start of the month.” Hyundai Motor India also reported a decline in October cumulative sales. The company’s October sales fell by over 36.7 per cent on a year-on-year basis, falling to 43,556 units last month from 68,835 units sold during the corresponding period of 2020. Geography-wise, the domestic sales declined to 37,021 units from 56,605 units reported for the corresponding period of last year. Similarly, exports for the period decreased. The company was able to ship out 6,535 units down from 12,230 units sold abroad during October 2020. Carmaker Kia India re-
ported total sales of 16,331 units in October 2021. “The adverse supply chain situation has been an opportunity lost for us; however, our customers’ and vendors’ continuous support has enabled us to maintain a healthy performance throughout the year,” said Tae-Jin Park, MD and CEO, Kia India. “As we foresee the issue to continue for the next few months, we assure our customers to keep optimising our production to the maximum level and ensure delivery at the earliest. We are keeping a close eye on the situation and are ready to take the necessary steps as and when required.” Another automobile manufacturer Honda Cars India’s domestic sales fell to 8,108 units in October 2021 from 10,836 units sold in domestic market in the corresponding period last year.

GLASGOW, NOV 2 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a “fruitful” first meeting with his Israeli counterpart Naftali Bennett on the sidelines of the COP26 climate summit here on Tuesday during which they reviewed the bilateral ties besides exchanging views about expanding cooperation in areas of hightechnology and innovation. Prime Minister Modi and Bennett’s maiden formal meeting came after their brief interaction on Monday during the climate conference. Earlier, recalling their brief meeting on Monday, Prime Minister Modi said that the people of India deeply value the friendship with Israel. “Enhancing friendship with Israel. between India and Israel, which is a deep relationship between two unique civilizations – the Indian civilization, the Jewish civilization – and I know it comes from your heart. It’s not about interests; it’s about a deep conviction that you harbour and we feel it,” Bennett told Modi at the start of the meeting. “On behalf of all Israeli citizens, we deeply appreciate this whole new approach that will go down in history as something that you brought about. So thank you,” the Israeli premier said as per a communication from his media adviser. Bennett also cited the “remarkable dynamics” between Indian and Israeli
innovators during his days as an entrepreneur which he said helped shape his feelings. “Indeed, my personal experience, to a great degree, shaped my feelings. As you recall, when I ran a hi-tech company, we merged with an Indian company – the two ‘I’s, India and Israel in Manhattan. In the office, there were a bunch of Israelis and Indians, and getting together created a remarkable dynamic of innovation. There’s so much that we can learn from you,” he noted. Urging to carry forward the deepened cooperation between the two countries that started during his predecessor Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister vowed to bring the ties together to a new level. “This is indeed what we seek to do. Our goal is to continue the wonderful path that you placed with my predecessor, and bring it to a whole new level, so we can ensure that our two nations work together on innovation, technology, space, security, agriculture, food
technologies, and of course climate-related technologies,” Bennett stressed. The Israeli premier also extended Diwali greetings to Modi and Indians. Prime Minister Modi, who was accompanied by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, interacted with Bennett on Monday in a cordial brief meeting. In a video tweeted by Modi, the two leaders were seen exchanging pleasantries during their animated discussion. “Indeed! We shall continue working together for stronger bilateral ties and for a better planet,” Modi said in a tweet on Tuesday. “The people of India deeply value the friendship with Israel,” he tweeted. Prime Minister Bennett, in a tweet, said, “it was truly great to finally meet you, @NarendraModi.” The meeting between Modi and Bennett comes after Jaishankar, during his visit to Israel last month, extended an invitation to the Israeli premier on behalf of Modi to visit India.
Australia prime minister attacks French leader’s credibility CANBERRA, NOV 2 (AP): Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison attacked the credibility of French President Emmanuel Macron as a newspaper quoted a text message that suggested France anticipated “bad news” about a now-scuttled submarine deal. An Australian newspaper cast doubt on President Joe Biden’s explanation to Macron last week that the US leader thought the French had been informed long before the September announcement that their 90 billion Australian dollar (USD 66 billion) submarine deal with Australia would be scrapped. Macron this week accused Morrison of lying to him at a Paris dinner in June about the fate of a 5-year-old contract with majority French state-owned Naval Group to build 12 conventional diesel-electric submarines. Australia cancelled that deal when it formed an alliance with US and Britain to acquire a fleet of eight nuclear-powered submarines

built with US technology. Morrison told Australian reporters who had accompanied him to Glasgow, Scotland, for a UN climate conference that he made clear to Macron at their dinner in June that conventional submarines would not meet Australia’s evolving strategic needs. Two days before Morrison, Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the nuclear submarine deal, Morrison attempted to phone Macron with the news, but the French leader texted back saying he was not available to take a call, The Australian newspaper reported.
Macron asked: “Should I expect good or bad news for our joint submarines ambitions?” the newspaper reported Tuesday. A journalist asked why Morrison decided to leak the text message after Macron accused him of lying, but the prime minister did not directly answer. “I’m not going to indulge your editorial on it, but what I’ll simply say is this: We were contacted when we were trying to set up the ... call and he made it pretty clear that he was concerned that this would be a phone call that could result in the decision of Australia not to proceed with the contract,” Morrison said.

Britain says a few dozen boats have not been given permits because they have not shown the required paperwork to back up their applications. “We absolutely stand ready to grant more licenses should the requisite evidence be provided,” said Blain.
Amrullah Saleh
NEW DELHI, NOV 2 (IANS): Amrullah Saleh, Vice President of the former Afghan government, has asked former President Ashraf Ghani to release the tapes of the peace process with Zalmay Khalilzad and other relevant foreign diplomats in particular of the past July and August, Khaama Press reported. Saleh in a Twitter post said that Ghani must do it to counter the growing propaganda that accuses
Sudan tribal protesters lift port blockade CAIRO, NOV 1 (AP): Tribal protesters on Monday lifted their weeklong blockade on Sudan’s main seaport and oil pipelines, and reopened roads linking the port to the rest of the country, a tribal leader said, following a deal with the military to remove the barricades for one month. T h e d e ve l o p m e n t comes a week after the military dissolved the transitional government in a widely condemned coup in Sudan that threatens to further derail the country’s already fragile transition after a popular uprising forced the removal of longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir in April 2019. Pro-democracy activists have accused the military of engineering the port blockade and another pro-military protest outside the presidential place in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, to deflect from their military takeover of

the country. Kamal Sayed, secretary general of the Baja tribal council, told The Associated Press the tribal leaders have reached a deal with the military to lift the blockade of the Red Sea port and oil pipelines, and reopen roads in the eastern city of Port Sudan for one month, to allow the formation of a new government. The council represents six nomadic tribes that live in northeastern Sudan where the port is located. They have held street pro-
tests in Port Sudan for the past two months, setting up barricades and staying out on the streets to block the port, a lifeline for the country, oil pipelines and major roads. The protesters demand the military fully dissolve the transitional government of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, whom the army put under house arrest following the coup. They also demand that a peace deal struck last year with a rebel alliance in the east be rene-
gotiated. The generals have denied accusations of engineering the port blockade, saying that the protesters’ demands in Port Sudan and in Khartoum are legitimate and should be negotiated politically. In the weeks before the coup, Hamdok’s government and the UN had tried unsuccessfully to negotiate the reopening of the port and the key roads. Sayed, the tribal official, said the makeshift barricades at the port’s terminals and the main highway liking Port Sudan to Khartoum was removed on Monday morning. He said the barricades would be reinstated if their demands are not met. The blockade has caused food and fuel shortages across Sudan, with the government warning last month the country was running out of essential goods, including medicines, food and wheat.
the Afghan side of the collapse of Afghanistan. “I know these tapes exist and you have them. This is the time to release,” Saleh said in a tweet. This comes after Khalilzad, the former US special envoy to Afghanistan’s reconciliation, and US secretary of state Antony Blinken accused Ghani to have been behind the collapse of the previous Afghan government. Blinken in his latest interview with CBS said that he had talked with Ghani and he had endorsed to hand on the government to the Taliban but added that he fled Afghanistan the following day. Ghani in his remarks after leaving Afghanistan had said that he escaped his country to prevent bloodshed and destruction of Kabul.
Former US diplomat Richardson meets Myanmar General Hlaing BANGKOK, NOV 2 (AP): Former US Ambassador to the UN Bill Richardson, on a humanitarian mission to strife-torn Myanmar, met Tuesday with the head of the Southeast Asian nation’s military-installed government. Myanmar’s Information Ministry said Richardson held discussions with Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing about prevention and control of COVID-19. Also present were the ministers of foreign affairs, health and international cooperation, it said. The meeting was shown on the evening news broadcast of state television MRTV. Richardson’s mission was announced Sunday by his office, which quoted him as saying he is “visiting the country to discuss pathways for the humanitarian delivery of COVID-19 vaccines, medical supplies, and other public health needs.”
Will not travel to India: Pak National Security Advisor
ISLAMABAD, NOV 2 (PTI): Pakistan National Security Advisor (NSA) Moeed Yusuf on Tuesday said he would not travel to India for an upcoming conference on Afghanistan on November 10 as he dismissed India’s role as a “peacemaker” in the wartorn neighbouring nation. India extended the invitation to Pakistan to attend the regional conference on Afghanistan being hosted by Indian NSA Ajit Doval. Talking to reporters
here, Yusuf said that he will not travel to India to attend the conference hosted by India on Afghanistan on November 10, The Express Tribune reported. In response to a question during the press conference, Yusuf said that a “spoiler” could not take on the role of a “peacemaker”, the report said. Earlier, Pakistan’s Foreign Office confirmed the invitation from India but said the decision would be taken at an appropriate time.
Moeed Yusuf
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had earlier said that Pakistan’s decision would be based on keeping in view the current state of relationship between the two nuclear-
armed neighbours. Ties between India and Pakistan nose-dived after a terror attack on the Pathankot Air Force base in 2016 by terror groups based in the neighbouring country. Subsequent attacks, including one on an Indian Army camp in Uri, further deteriorated the relationship. The relationship dipped further after India’s war planes pounded a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training camp deep
NEW DELHI, NOV 2 (IANS): At least 19 people were killed and 43 wounded when two explosions followed by gunfire hit Afghanistan’s biggest military hospital in the capital Kabul, Al Jazeera reported. The sound of gunfire was also heard near the Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan military hospital in the Afghan capital, according to witnesses and a government spokesperson. Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesman of the Islamic Emirate, told reporters that at least two blasts took place at the entrance of the 400-bed hospital in Kabul’s 10th district. Witnesses told Al Jazeera it was a car bomb. Photographs shared by residents showed a plume of smoke after the blasts in the former diplomatic zone
inside Pakistan on February 26, 2019 in response to the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed. The relations deteriorated after India announced withdrawing special powers of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcation of the state into two union territories in August, 2019. India has told Pakistan that it desires normal neighbourly relations with Islamabad in an environment free of terror, hostility and violence.
However, his mission has also raised hopes that Richardson will seek the release of US journalist Danny Fenster, who has been jailed in Myanmar for the past five months. Myanmar’s health care system is largely broken amid widespread resistance to the military’s ouster in February of the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Medical personnel have been at the forefront of the opposition to military rule. The situation is exacerbated by Myanmar’s poverty and increasingly fierce fighting between the government and pro-democracy insurgents in various parts of the country. “Governor Richardson believes that, in moments of crisis and instability such as this one, we must ensure that humanitarian aid is delivered to those most in need,” his office said in a statement.

in the Wazir Akbar Khan area in central Kabul. Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate, said the first explosion occurred in front of the Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan hospital. According to Karimi, the second explosion also occurred in an area close to the hospital. Gunfire has also been heard from the blast area, Tolo News reported. Saeed
Khosti, spokesman of the Interior Ministry, said one of the explosions occurred at the entrance of the hospital. According to Khosti, the explosions have caused casualties but so far the exact details are not known. He said security forces have arrived at the scene. Ambulances were carrying injured people to hospitals from the area, Tolo News reported.

Paris has also suggested it might restrict energy supplies to the Channel Islands, which are heavily dependent on French electricity. The French president’s office said Monday the port blockade would begin at midnight if no compromise is found. The UK downplayed the significance of Monday’s meeting, saying it was “part of the ongoing, continuing discussions that have been going on for months now.” “We continue to have discussions with our French counterparts at a number of different levels,” said Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s spokesman, Max Blain. LONDON, NOV 1 (AP): French and British officials met Monday to talk about fishing, as the deadline for a threatened threatened French blockade of British boats and trucks loomed in just a few hours. The European Commission said it had called a meeting involving officials from Britain, France and the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, which are self-governing British Crown dependencies with control over their own territorial waters, “to allow for a swift solution on the outstanding issues” in the dispute over French fishing boats’ access to British waters. The spat has escalated into a major dispute. France has threatened to bar British boats from some of its ports and tighten checks on boats

Rathour reapplies for post of India batting coach
Blatter, Platini indicted for fraud Team India divided into two groups: Shoaib Akhtar
MUMBAI, NOV 2 (IANS): Former India player and current batting coach, Vikram Rathour, has reapplied for the post after the BCCI had advertised for key coaching positions last month. The tenure of the present set of coaching staff, including chief coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun, fielding coach R Sridhar and Rathour, among others, will end with the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup underway in the UAE. BCCI had on October 17 invited job applications for the coaching staff, indicating that the team could get an all-new support staff after the T20 World Cup. Rathour, the former Punjab wicketkeeper-batter was appointed on a two-year contract in 2019, starting with the home series against South Africa in September and his term ends with the conclusion of the T20 World Cup.
GENEVA, NOV 2 (AP): Former FIFA officials Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini were charged with fraud and other offenses by Swiss prosecutors on Tuesday after a six-year investigation into a controversial USD 2 million payment. The 85-year-old Blatter and 65-year-old Platini now face a trial within months at federal criminal court in Bellinzona. “This payment damaged FIFA’s assets and unlawfully enriched Platini,” Swiss federal prosecutors said in a statement. The case from September 2015 ousted Blatter ahead of schedule as FIFA president and ended then-UEFA president Platini’s campaign to succeed his former mentor. Swiss cases often take years to reach a conclusion. The case centers on Platini’s written request to FIFA in January 2011 to be paid backdated additional salary for working as a presidential adviser in Blatter’s first term, from 1998-2002. Blatter authorized FIFA to make the
NEW DELHI, NOV 2 (IANS): Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar expressed shock over India’s poor performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup and said that there appears to be “divisions” within the side. Akhtar’s remarks came after Virat Kohli and his brigade lost their second

Both Blatter and Platini have long denied wrongdoing and cited a verbal agreement they had made, now more than 20 years ago, for the money to be paid. Blatter has been charged with fraud, mismanagement, misappropriation of FIFA funds and forgery of a document. Platini has been charged with fraud,
misappropriation, forgery and as an accomplice to Blatter’s alleged mismanagement. Platini, a French soccer great, was not placed under formal investigation until last year, and months later the more serious allegation of fraud was included against both men. Prosecutors had opened criminal proceedings against Blatter in September 2015 ahead of a police raid at FIFA headquarters in Zurich on the day he and Platini attended a meeting of the soccer body’s executive committee.

swashbuckling all-rounder had announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in June 2019. There were also talks that he may come out of retirement to play domestic cricket for Punjab and was even included in the 30man list of probables for the 2020-21 Syed Mushtaq Ali but did not play.
Inter said it was a mutual decision to end his contract with one year remaining. The former Juventus and Italy coach was then in talks with Tottenham in the summer about becoming Jose Mourinho’s successor. T20 WC: Pakistan beat Namibia by 45 runs to clinch semi-final spot
ABU DHABI, NOV 2 (PTI): Opener Mohammad Rizwan continued his scintillating form with a blistering 79 as a thoroughly professional Pakistan stormed into the semifinals of the T20 World Cup with a 45run thrashing of Namibia here on Tuesday. Rizwan’s 50-ball knock contained four sixes and eight fours, while his skipper Babar Azam soaked up the early pressure with a classy 70 from 49 deliveries in a record-breaking 113-run opening stand. With the knock, Rizwan (1661) surpassed Indian skipper Virat Kohli (1614) and remained just five shy of Chris Gayle (1665) to become the batter with most T20 runs in a calendar year. Babar and Rizwan became the first opening pair to post five century-plus partnerships, bettering the Indian duo Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan’s tally of four. The pair also became the first to aggregate 1000-plus T20I runs -- 1041 -- in a calendar year as Pakistan seized control of the game. Mohammad Hafeez also returned to form with a sensational cameo of 32

not out from 16 balls (5x4), something that allowed Rizwan the much-needed breather in the middle. In reply, Namibia were restricted to 144 for five with David Wiese making 43 from 31-balls and Craig Williams scoring 40. Heading into the game, Hasan Ali’s bowling form
was the weakest link in Pakistan’s otherwise flawless show in this World Cup, but the pacer seemed to have got his rhythm back, returning impressive figures of 1/22 in four overs. Ali was given the new ball and he impressed early, cleaning up Michael van Lingen to give Pakistan a perfect start. Na-

reaching the finals. Tejongol Sothu of Viswemi and Winanthiu of Headhunters were cautioned for their unsporting behaviours. In the last quarter final match, Fifa FC dominated AYhome FC 4-1. Playing for Fifa FC, Moirangthem scored in the 7th minute and within 20 minutes he scored again. mibia needed 120 with eight wickets in hand at the halfway mark but Pakistan looked in complete control. Namibia’s superstar all-rounder Wiese kept producing his big hits but he lacked support at the other end in the daunting chase. Earlier, Namibia took the honours in the first 10 overs, giving away just 59 runs at the halfway mark. Trumpelmann led the attack superbly, returning with figures of 2-1-2-0 in his first spell, as Pakistan made just six runs in the first three overs. Rizwan struggled to get going and saw an LBW decision overturned while he was on two from 11 balls. The wicketkeeper was further tested after being hit by a Ben Shikongo short-pitched delivery but he managed to hold on, even as his skipper went after the bowling. Babar took the
early initiative and complemented well en route to his third half-century from four matches. Rizwan broke free against Namibia’s best bowler, Trumpelmann, stepping out to hit him over long-on. It also meant that left-arm medium pacer Trumpelmann, who just conceded two runs and bowled a maiden in his first two overs, went for 34 in his last two with Rizwan-Hafeez going for the kill. Pakistan also got some help with the dew settling in towards the back-end of the innings as the Namibians struggled to check the run flow. Brief scores: Pakistan 189/2 in 20 overs (Babar 70, Rizwan 79 not out, Mohammed Hafeez 32 not out; David Wiese 1/30) beat Namibia 144/5 in 20 overs (Craig Williams 40, David Wiese 43 not out; Hasan Ali 1-22, Imad Wasim 1/13) by 45

Injured Messi out of PSG’s CL clash with Leipzig
LEIPZIG (GERMANY), NOV 2 (AFP): Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi will miss Wednesday’s Champions League clash with RB Leipzig due to injury, Paris Saint Germain announced on Tuesday. The 34-yearold six-time Ballon d’Or winner has a left hamstring problem and a painful knee. Messi had gone off at halftime of PSG’s 2-1 Ligue 1 victory over Lille last Friday but coach Mauricio Pochettino had said he expected him to be fit for the Leipzig match. However, he missed training on Monday and on Tuesday the club confirmed he would not after all be fit. PSG’s statement said the four-time Champions League winner was suffering from “a pain in his hamstring in his left thigh and a painful knee due to bruising.” Messi may also be a doubt for Saturday’s Ligue 1 clash between table-toppers PSG and strugglers Bordeaux. He is due to then join up with his national squad for two World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil.
ABU DHABI, NOV 2 (PTI): Pacers Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje ran through the Bangladesh batting-line up to fashion South Africa’s comfortable six-wicket win, which took the Proteas closer to the T20 World Cup semifinals. South Africa skittled out a struggling Bangladesh for 84 in 18.2 overs and then knocked off their target in 13.3 overs to consolidate their second position in Group 1. With three wins from four matches, South Africa now have a match left against in-form table toppers and unbeaten England on November 6. Rabada’s (3/20) first spell in which he scalped three batters, including two in two balls, was instrumental in the slide of Bangladesh, who were playing without star-all rounder Shakib Al Hasan. Nortje (3/8) also got rid of three batters while Shamsi Tabraiz (2/21) dismissed two. Had it not been for Mahedi Hasan’s 27-run cameo, Bangladesh would not have even crossed the 80-run mark. Chasing a small total, South Africa lost openers Quinton de Kock (16) and Reeza Hendricks (4) cheaply and Aiden Markram also exited without scoring, as the Bangladeshis bowled with lot of firepower

and purpose. However, skipper Temba Bavuma (31 not out) and Rassie van der Dussen (22) steadied the innings, having taken some time to get the measure of the pitch which was assisting the fast bowlers. Eventually Bavuma got the job done in the company of David Miller (5 not out), who finished the match in style, with a four off Mahedi Hasan. Earlier, spinner Keshav Maharaj and Rabada were terrific with their line and length when they opened the attack. They did not let either Liton Das (24) or Mohammad Naim free their arms. When Naim (9) tried to break the shackles, the left-hander ended up giv-
ing a simple catch to Reeza Hendricks at mid-wicket, off Rabada. The young pacer trapped Soumya Sarkar (0) in the next ball which brought Mushfiqur Rahim to the crease. Nortje also kept the Bangladesh batters on a tight leash, which meant that the South Africans completely dominated the power play overs, conceding only two boundaries in 28 runs. BRIEF SCORES: Bangladesh 84 all out in 18.2 overs (Mehedi Hasan 27; Anrich Nortje 3/8, Kagiso Rabada 3/20), South Africa 86/4 in 13.3 overs (Rassie van der Dussen 22, Temba Bavuna 31, Taskin Ahmed 2-18).
