IMPHAL, MAY 30: In an effort to bring back normalcy in strife-torn Manipur, Union home minister Amit Shah met and interacted with leaders of various civil society organisations (CSOs) of both the conflicting ethnic communities on Tuesday.

Shah, who arrived Imphal Monday night with a mission to restore normalcy and peace in the state, began the day with a meeting with women CSO leaders at Imphal Raj Bhavan, followed by a closed-door meeting with Kuki-based CSO leaders in Churachandpur district. He also met several prominent personalities from the Meitei community before leaving for Churachandpur.

Shah also held a closeddoor meeting with chief minister N Biren Singh and ministers at CM’s secretariat late Monday night soon after his arrival in Imphal.

During the meeting, which lasted about one hour, a five-point decision was adopted which included among others payment of compensation amount of Rs10 lakh (Rs five lakh to be borne by the state and Rs 5lakh as Central share) each to the families of the deceased persons and provision of government jobs to a member of family of the deceased persons, a DIPR release said.

While resolving to work for restoration of normalcy and bring peace to the state at the earliest, the

meeting also resolved to take up necessary action to improve the law-and-order situation and build confidence among the public. It was also decided to expedite relief measures and make essential items like petrol, LPG gas, rice and other daily requirements available to the common people and install telephone lines.

Shah, who was accompanied by Intelligence Bureau chief and Home Secretary, also held three rounds of talks with various groups such as Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF),

Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) and other civil society organisations. He also met five Kuki MLAs from the BJP. “We demanded total separation from Manipur-both political and geographical. We also sought President’s Rule as the law and order has totally collapsed in the state,” ITLF secretary Muan Tombing told PTI.

DIMAPUR/KOHIMA, MAY 30 (NPN): The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), on the advice of its seniors, on Tuesday decided to suspend its ongoing agitation to protest against the State government’s failure to arrest the culprits involved in vandalizing its office on May 27. However, NSF said that the federation would continue to press for justice to be delivered at the earliest.

In a statement, NSF president Kegwayhun Tep and general secretary Siipuni Ng Philo said that the decision was made at the emergency seniors consultative meeting of NSF held at Angami Public Organisation (APO) conference hall, Kohima on Tuesday.

The meeting also resolved not to recognise the unmandated group of individuals claiming to be Naga Club and sole ownership of Naga Club building, which the federation had been zealously guarding as (Cont’d on p-8) its custodian. It contended

The house also resolved to let the Naga people decide as to whether the Naga political issue, history and their rights could be owned and inherited by some individuals. As the Naga Club belonged to all Nagas, the meeting decided that no individual or group could claim ownership over it. In the best interest of all Naga

people, the NSF asserted that it could not allow few individuals to usurp the legacy of unity and Naga nationhood, insisting that the Naga must not be exclusive but inclusive of all Nagas without borders.

It further resolved to place in public domain and let the Nagas decide whether there was a need to revive Naga Club and also whether it was relevant in the present context. The Nagas should collectively decide on the fate of the club and not be misled by narratives and half-truths.

D I M A P U R , M AY 3 0 (NPN): The Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has appealed to Meitei and Kuki communities of Manipur to refrain from indulging in any further provocative acts of violence and maintain peace and harmony at all levels. In a statement, NTC called upon the two communities to shun from all forms of violence and give peace a chance and restore the ageold peaceful atmosphere and tranquillity, and rebuild the past glory of Manipur.

According to NTC, the glory of clashes and arson was only destruction, impacting economy of the people and loss of God’s beautiful creation of precious lives that could not be given by any man on earth. The council said it was against humanity. “Anger is the shortest form of madness and by the time it is regretted, the devastation done is gone beyond management,” the statement emphasised.

State logs 2 fresh Covid-19 cases

D I M A P U R , M AY 3 0 (NPN): Nagaland on Tuesday recorded two more fresh cases of Covid-19 pushing the total caseload to 36028.

According to health department, out of two cases, one each was reported from Kohima and Zunheboto.

With this, the state currently has five active cases.

The death toll remained unchanged at 782 (including 5 non-Covid deaths but with positivity).

KVC said that the vandalized building was heritage and an iconic monu-

CEC, NUTA: Central Executive Council (CEC), Nagaland University Teacher’s Association (NUTA) expressed deep dismay over the vandalism carried out at NSF office and destruction of the Naga Heritage building (the symbol of Naga Aspiration for self-governance) by some miscreants.

13 colonies object to DMC notification for food vendors D I M A P U R , M AY 3 0 (NPN): Thirteen colony councils under Ward-20/ Ward-4 under Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) have urged the DMC to revoke the notification dated May 22, 2023, for re-allocation of space for food truck/food cart street vendors at Naga Shopping Arcade (Super Market).

In a representation addressed to the DMC administrator, chairmen of 13 colonies- Bank Colony Council, Rengma Colony Council, Bangjak Phom Colony Council, Central Colony Council, Chakhesang Colony Council, Northern Angami Colony Council and Walford area Colony Council-

Termed the decision to reallocate space was “abruptly” made without any prior information, consent or proper consultation with the stakeholders and colony councils of Ward20/Ward 4. The signatories informed that the collective joint meeting comprising of Ward-20 and other council surrounding the area have decided to strongly oppose the notification.

They revealed that there was an already “disturbing reality” that exists in the vicinity of Naga Shopping Arcade (Super Market).

They said that the colony councils of Ward-20/Ward 4 have since inception, been tackling issues in the area, that attracted many chal-

lenges and problems requiring constant attention for maintaining law and order.

The signatories said that colony councils always faced difficulties in tackling with the prevailing issues such as overnight illegal activities, late night parties, scuffles arising out of such illegal activates etc. They said such prevailing issues have largely affected the general public at large and particularly the public of Ward -20/Ward 4.

The signatories affirmed that the colonies vehemently object the notification in allowing the relocation of the Food Truck/ Food Cart/Street Food Vendors in Naga Shopping Arcade (Super Market) when the area already created

enough space for attracting immense problems, The signatories expressed strong belief that the notification would only create space for more practical problems and adding more and more nuisance.

While supporting street food vendors community and in no way disrespecting or demeaning their dignity of labour, the joint council has, however, urged the DMC to revoke the notification in the interest and greater good of the public of Ward -20 and the surrounding colonies.

The signatories warned that in the event of failing to comply with their appeal, the joint colony councils would be forced to implement “any necessary steps/actions”.

(Niki) informs 30 medical colleges derecognised in onNSCN valid ‘work permit’ 2 months, 100 more in line: Report NEW DELHI, MAY 30 (PTI): Around 30 medical colleges across the country have lost recognition over the past two months allegedly for not following standards set by the National Medical Commission (NMC), official sources said on Tuesday.

About 100 more medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Assam, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry and West Bengal may also face similar action, they said.

The colleges were not found to be complying with the set norms and several lapses related to CCTV cameras, Aadhaar-linked biometric

attendance procedures and faculty rolls were found during inspections carried out by the Commission, an official source said.

According to government data, the number of medical colleges has increased significantly since 2014. There is an increase of 69% in medical colleges from 387 before 2014 to 654 as of now, minister of state for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar had told the Rajya Sabha in February.

Further, there is an increase of 94% in MBBS seats from 51,348 before 2014 to 99,763 as of now

and an increase of 107% in PG seats from 31,185 before 2014 to 64,559 as of now. To increase the number of doctors in the country, the government has increased the number of medical colleges and subsequently increased MBBS seats, she had said.

The measures taken by the government to increase the number of medical seats include a centrally-sponsored scheme for establishment of new medical colleges by upgrading district/referral hospitals, under which 94 new medical colleges are already functional out of 157 approved. (Cont’d on p-8)

In a press note, secretary kilo (home) affairs office cautioned all those who employ non-Nagas in workplaces-shops, firms, companies etc. to ensure proper verification of documents that would prove his/her identity and address.

The office also informed all concerned to thoroughly verify the documents issued by competent authority. “Non-compliance of the directive of this notification shall be dealt with as per the Yezabo,” it stated.

DIMAPUR: Office of the Assistant Commissioner of Excise (Zonal) Kohima on May 30 destroyed 15137 bottles of assorted Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) at Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) Garbage Dumping area, Merima.

In a press release, assistant commissioner of excise (Zonal) Kohima, Vithoselie Terhuja informed that the seizures were during the period, January 2022 to March 2023.

He said the destruction was done in the presence of the board members consisting of representative from the district administration and KMC.

DIMAPUR: Deputy Commissioner (DC) and District Election Officer (DEO) Dimapur, Sachin Jaiswal has informed all vehicle owners/drivers, who performed election duty within Dimapur district at the recently concluded 14th Nagaland L e g i s l a t ive A s s e m b ly 2023, that payment for hiring/holding charges would start from June 2-7 at the office of DC and DEO Dimapur during office hours.

All vehicle owners/ drivers have been requested to produce requisition slip at the time of payment.

DIMAPUR: Advisor of Minority Affairs and Sericulture, Imkongmar along with department officials visited government sericulture farms and district sericulture offices from May 19-22.

According to a DIPR report, during the visit, meetings were held in all the places with the respective officers and staff of the districts in some of the farms/offices.

Speaking at the meetings, the advisor appealed to the farm officials to work hard with dedication and emphasize more on farm production to generate more revenue.

Imkongmar suggested organizing awareness programmes for the farmers from time to time and also selecting the farmers based on their performances.

DIMAPUR: A training to prevent all forms of violent conflicts, and peace building was conducted for interfaith women leaders on May 27 at Peace Centre, Chümoukedima.

A press release by Peace Channel informed that around hundred women leaders from different religions, denominations and communities were trained.

Delivering a keynote address, Director of Peace Channel and principal North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Dr. Fr C P Anto

said women play a vital role in peace building in North East India. He also deliberated on preventing, intervening and resolving conflicts and briefed the gathering on brought processes and techniques of conflict resolution.

Re s o u r c e p e r s o n , Mhabeni Ngullie spoke about women’s leadership in peace negotiations and encouraged women folk to understand how important it was to know and initiate peace negotiations when circumstances arise.

Speaking as the chief guest on the concluding day of the programme at Bengaluru, joint secretary RD and Mission Director, NSRLM, Imtimenla said the State Rural Livelihoods Mission (SRLM) has taken the challenge to bring a new revolution in providing financial literacy by providing training to 1.2 lakhs house-holds (HHs)

of SHGs. She expressed shock at the Nagaland’s financially literate rate (8%) and expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), for sponsoring the training while acknowledged the NAR for providing a suitable training slot, during such a time of need.

Imtimenla assured that the three pillars of Financial Literacy (FL) intervention viz. the RSETIs, the Financial Literacy Centers (FLCs/LDMs) and the SRLMs would jointly take the FL intervention forward with all sincerity, as per the directive of government of India, RBI, MoRD in providing financial literacy to the SHG members.

She also acknowledged the prominent resource persons from NAR and senior bankers and expressed thanks to the convenor, State Level Bankers Coordination (SLBC), the chairman Nagaland Rural Bank (NRB) and the Managing Director, Nagaland State Cooperative Bank (NSCB) for deputing senior officials to the training.

DIMAPUR: Expressing concern over huge challenges faced by the farming community in the state due to climate change, advisor of Agriculture, Mhathung Yanthan suggested change in cropping patterns in line with scientific and improved practices.

Yanthan was speaking as special guest at the coordination meeting-cumworkshop of Agriculture & Allied departments/ Institutions in Nagaland on May 30 at the MultiPurpose Hall, SAS, NU organised by Research & Extension Cell (REC), SAS, NU. He said it was everyone responsibility to address the challenges and to evolve strategies and solu-

tions and ensured that the production system was in consonance with conservative measures.

The advisor also urged the participants to make agriculture attractive by focusing on farming as a business model and an enterprise and help farmers develop the mind-set of an entrepreneur.

Yanthan further informed that to create a platform so that concerned departments and institutions will be able to interact and bring effectiveness or beneficial results.

He also emphasized on the need for creation of more infrastructure for post-harvest produce which would be location specific and monitored properly

Correspondent IMPHAL, MAY 30: As many as eight militants are feared killed in a gunfight with a combined force of Manipur police commandos and Central paramilitary forces at Litanpokpi, a village in the periphery of valley in Imphal East bordering with Kangpokpi district on Tuesday.

The gunfight erupted after the combined force rushed to the area after a villager sustained bullet injuries in a gun attack by the militants towards a group of villagers guarding their village (Litanpokpi).

Reports said that a 37-year-old person identified as Sagolsem Budha sustained injuries on his chest after he was hit by a bullet

fired from the top of the hill near Litanpokpi village around 6 am on Tuesday.

Litanpokpi is among several villages in the periphery of the valley where male villagers continued to guard their houses even as armed miscreants had torched most of them since the beginning of the ethnic conflict on May 3 last. With critical bullet injuries on his chest, the injured person was admitted at a hospital in Imphal and his condition was stated to be critical.

Local reports said that miscreants allegedly camping on top of the hill near their village fired several rounds. In the aftermath of the attack, security forces rushed to the spot and launched a massive search operation to flush out the

attackers. The operation was in progress till Tuesday evening. Villagers claimed that the suspected militants carried out the attack using sniper fire and that the shot that hit the villager was fired from a long distance.

It was also reported that some militants also attacked a village neighbouring Litanpokpi, and set ablaze around 30 houses.

To flush out the militants, a combined force comprising state police commandos, Assam Rifles and other paramilitary forces rushed to the spot.

In the exchange of fire, the police believe that at least four militants were slain.

As the combined force continued the operation to dominate the areas occupied by the militants, they once again engaged in the exchange of fire around 4 pm on Tuesday. At least four more militants were believed to have been eliminated by the combined forces, initial reports said. The gun battle between the security forces and militants was reportedly continuing till the time of filing this report.

KANGPOKPI, MAY 30 (AGENCIES): A huge consignment of relief materials, including three trucks of food grains, and a fully loaded truck of medicine from Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio reached Kangpokpi today at around 1:00 pm.

The consignment was received by the District level Relief Committee formed under the Committee on Tribals Unity, Sadar Hills in the presence of Minister Nemcha Kipgen, and MLA Haokholet Kipgen at Brig. M. Thomas ground Kangpokpi.

The consignment trucks were accompanied by the Nagaland police.

Chairman of the District-Level Relief Committee, Lunseh Kipgen expressed sincere gratitude to the Chief Minister of Nagaland for extending a huge consignment of relief materials for the Internally Displaced Persons in Kangpokpi district.

He said that the people of Kangpokpi, especially the Internally Displaced Persons, are

thankful to the Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio for providing such a huge consignment of food grains and the most needed medicine at this critical juncture.

“I on behalf of the people of Kangpokpi and the Internally Displaced Persons extend my sincere gratitude to the Chief Minister of Nagaland for his love and generosity to the Kuki people by extending a huge consignment of foodgrains and medicines”, he added.

Meanwhile, the Kuki Inpi Manipur, the apex body of the Kuki tribes in Manipur President, Ch. Forester killed, 3 injured in attack by timber mafia GOALPARA (ASSAM), MAY 30 (PTI): A forester was killed and three others were injured in an attack allegedly by the timber mafia in Assam’s Goalpara district, police said on Tuesday.

The forest personnel were attacked with sharp weapons at Krishnai Shalpara Darapara under the Krishnai range forest office in the district late on Monday night, the official said.

The forest personnel had rushed to the area on receiving information about felling of trees in the proposed reserve forest area and recovered a tractor filled with sal trees.

They were attacked when they started to bring the tractor to the forest department office, the official said. The injured were rushed to a hospital at Goalpara, while two of them have been referred to Guwahati.

NEW DELHI, MAY 30 (IANS): An eight-member team of Congress led by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday met President Droupadi Murmu appraising her of the situation in Manipur where violence erupted on May 3 and demanded a probe by a highlevel inquiry committee headed a serving or retired Supreme Court Judge.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here after submitting the memorandum with the President, Congress General secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Our delegation went to meet President Murmu over the Manipur issue. The delegation was led

by Congress chief Kharge and a four-page memorandum was submitted and demanded what action should be taken.”

AIZAWL, MAY 30 (PTI): The Mizoram government has sought Rs 5 crore assistance from the Centre to provide immediate relief to people who have taken shelter in the state from violence-hit Manipur, a senior official said on Tuesday.

People from Manipur, affected by ethnic conflict, continued to flock to Mizoram, and the number rose to 8,282 till Monday, state home department commissioner and secretary H Lalengmawia said.

“A letter seeking monetary assistance of Rs 5 crore as immediate relief for the internally displaced people was sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs last week. We are hopeful that the Centre will provide the assistance as the displaced people are none other than Indian citizens,” the state home secretary told PTI. Notably, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is on a four-day visit to strife-torn Manipur. The majority of the displaced people are lodged at temporary shelters in several villages, while many are residing at their relatives’ residences, Lalengmawia said.

According to the Mizoram home department, 2,925 people from Manipur have fled to Kolasib district, followed by 2,738 to Aizawl and 2,257 to Saitual.

The remaining 363 people took shelter in Champhai, Khawzawl, Hnahthial, Serchhip, Mamit and Lunglei districts, it said.

I

n a horrendous attack carried out in public view, a 16-year-old girl was stabbed over 34 times and bludgeoned to death by a youth in a busy bylane in northwest delhi’s Shahbad dairy area as passersby looked on - an incident that has drawn massive outrage as the video of the horrific killing appeared online.

The footage shows around a dozen people walking by even as the attacker repeatedly stabs the teenage in a lane. The accused, Sahil khan, an Ac and refrig erator mechanic, fled the city and was nabbed from Aterna village in Bulandshahr Up monday afternoon after cops tracked a call he made from his aunt’s phone to his father. A nearly 90-second video of the incident that was shared online showed the accused pinning the victim to a wall with one hand and stabbing her repeatedly. He did not stop even when the girl slumped to the ground, jabbing the knife into her over 20 times, kicking her and then slamming a cement slab on her repeatedly. While the horrific murder took place in full public view, what was also shocking was the display of public apathy, where people can be seen passing by, with some bystanders staring in alarm, but not doing anything to stop the brutal attack.

The accused is seen walking away from the victim in a casual manner, only to turn back and again hit her with the slab before leaving the site. The inhuman savagery of the horrific murder by the attacker Sahil khan, left none in doubt about his total lack of human feelings. The brutal murder also brought recollections of another horrific brutal murder and gang rape of a female psychotherapy intern, commonly known as the Nirbhaya case, on december 16, 2012 in munirka, a neighbourhood in South West delhi. Had even one of the many passersby and bystanders on monday intervened to stop the savage attack, perhaps the victim would have been alive.After the horrific 2012 Nirbhaya case, it was believed that crime against women would witness a dip but instead, it has risen sharply. delhi commission for Women’s head met parents of the murdered Rohini teen on Tuesday and said the commission received 2,000 complaints every day on crimes against women. According to the National crime Record Bureau(NcRB) , the number of crimes against women grew from 56.5% in 2020 to 64.5% in 2021, (incidents per 1 lakh population). In the initial half of 2023, crimes against women register increase by 15 per cent. Haryana tops the chart in crime against women in region as per NcRB data of 2021.

The perpetuation of violence against women in India continues as a result of many systems of sexism and patriarchy in place within Indian culture. The gender inequality in India has been the cause for discrimination against females right from childhood where boys are shown preferential treatment. Women who are put in a situation where they are being subjected to gender-based violence are often victim shamed, being told that their safety is their own responsibility and that whatever may happen to them is their own fault.

This needs to change if women in India can feel safe.

If a person is ever going to do anything worthwhile, there will be times when he must risk everything by his leap in the dark. In the spiritual realm, Jesus Christ demands that you risk everything you hold on to or believe through common sense, and leap by faith into what He says. Once you obey, you will immediately find that what He says is as solidly consistent as common sense.

By the test of common sense, Jesus Christ’s statements may seem mad, but when you test them by the trial of faith, your findings will fill your spirit with the awesome fact that they are the very words of God. Trust completely in God, and when He brings you to a new opportunity of adventure, offering it to you, see that you take it. We act like pagans in a crisis— only one out of an entire crowd is daring enough to invest his faith in the character of God.

More so, Naga Club must not be exclusive but inclusive of all Nagas without borders.

The Naga people should collectively decide on the fate of the Naga Club and not be misled by narratives which are barely even the half truth. If need be, every Frontal Organization of the Naga tribes must come together under one roof and decide on the fate of the Naga Club.

NSF will extend our fullest co-operation and support towards achieving that end.

NEW DELHI, MAY 30 (PTI): Giving a fresh push to its ambitious plan to infuse private sector talent in its departments, the Centre has decided to recruit 17 senior officers through lateral entry mode.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has asked the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to induct these senior officers from the private sector in six departments at the level of joint secretaries, directors and deputy secretaries on contract basis, officials said on Tuesday.

This is the fourth such recruitment drive proposed to be undertaken by the Narendra Modi government which had in 2018 initiated lateral entry - referred to as the appointment of private sector specialists in government departments - to bring fresh talent and augment the availability of manpower.

Mamata seeks Centre’s Political leaders condemn permission to visit Manipur civilian’s killing in J-K’s Anantnag

KO L K ATA , M AY 3 0 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said she has written to the Centre, seeking permission to visit the strife-torn state of Manipur.

According to officials, the TMC supremo has been closely monitoring incidents in the northeastern state.

Questioning the “delay” by central leaders in reaching out to Manipur, she also said the “country wants to know the real picture in Manipur”.

“I want to be with the people of Manipur … I have no intention to breach any protocol but wish to be with the peace-loving people of the state,” Banerjee told reporters at Nabanna, the West Bengal secretariat, adding that she had sent the letter to the central government on Monday.

She had, last week, accused the BJP of trying to create “Manipur-like

conflicts” in West Bengal.

To visit, work or do business in Manipur, all people from outside the state require an inner line permit.

However, the permit is issued by the state government and not the Centre.

Banerjee’s party, TMC, has been trying to expand its footprint outside West Bengal without much success.

While it managed to win five seats in the recently held elections to the Meghalaya assembly, the party drew a blank in polls to the Tripura assembly.

The TMC used to have one MLA in the Manipur assembly, prior to the elections held last year.

However, TMC legislator Tongbram Robindro had joined the BJP ahead of the 2022 elections.

Notably, Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in strife-torn Manipur on Monday night to try to restore peace by hammering out a solution between the warring communities.

The northeastern state, afflicted by ethnic conflict for nearly a month, witnessed a sudden spurt in clashes and firing between militants and security forces on Sunday, after a relative lull for several weeks.

SRINAGAR, MAY 30 (PTI): Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday condemned the killing of a civilian by militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district and sought strict security measures to prevent such targeted killings.

Deepu Kumar (27), who worked at a circus in the district’s Janglat Mandi area, was gunned down by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in the latest incident of targeted killing when he had gone to the market to buy milk around 8.30 pm on Monday.

Singh, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office wrote on Twit-

ter, “While on a visit to Chennai, I was extremely shocked to learn about the brutal killing of young Deepu who hailed from Majalta, district Udhampur and was earning meagre livelihood in Anantnag. BJP Karyakartas have already reached the house of the bereaved family to provide all possible help.

“While strongly condemning the killing of this youth from a poor family, it is strongly urged that strict security measures be enforced to prevent such target killings and also to act as deterrent against terror activities.”

JHAJJAR KOTLI/JAMMU, MAY 30 (PTI): Ten Vaishno Devi pilgrims, most of them from Bihar, were killed and 57 injured on Tuesday as the bus they were travelling in skidded off the road and rammed into the railing of a bridge before falling off it, officials said.

The death toll may go up as Government Medical College Hospital Principal Shashi Soodan said two of the injured admitted there are critical.

The officials said the bus, which was on its way to Katra from Amritsar, met with the accident in Jhajjar Kotli area on the JammuSrinagar National Highway between 6.30 and 7 am.

Katra is a base camp for the pilgrims visiting the famous shrine atop the Trikuta hills.

They said most of the travellers were members of an extended family from Bihar’s Lakhisarai and were on pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi temple for a ritual of a child.

“The accident took place at Jhajjar Kotli bridge.

Ten people have died. Rescue operation is almost complete,” Jammu Senior Superintendent of Police Chandan Kohli told PTI. “We are investigating the reasons behind the accident.”

Local residents, CRPF and police personnel rushed to the spot and launched the rescue operation.

B H O PA L , M AY 3 0 (IANS): The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has arrested two persons allegedly for smuggling marijuana in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district.

They were arrested by the police at Uchehra railway station on Monday.

According to the RPF, the arrested persons have been identified as Sundaram Tiwari, a resident of Panna district, while the other accused has been identified as Raj Chaurasia, a native of Chandauli district in Uttar Pradesh.

Sanjay Mishra, a senior RPF official said around 22 kg marijuana of worth Rs 1.7 lakh was recovered from their possession.

GURUGRAM, MAY 30 (IANS): A crime branch team of the Gurugram Police has arrested three persons for allegedly betting on an Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match, an official said on Tuesday.

The arrested accused were identified as Rajkumar, Sajjan and Pramod - all residents of Gurugram.

The accused were arrested on Monday from Sector-38 in Gurugram. The police have recovered four mobile phones, one laptop and a register from their possession.

Woman duped of Rs 1.8 crore by Nigerian ‘friend’

GURUGRAM, MAY 30 (PTI): Two Nigerian nationals were arrested for allegedly swindling a woman of Rs 1.80 crore on several pretexts after befriending her through Instagram, police here on Tuesday said. According to police, the victim was a local woman who reported the matter on April 10 at Manesar Police Station. In her complaint, the woman said she was cheated of 1.80 crore by a man who she had met on Instagram last year. The man had introduced himself as a British Airways pilot, she told police.

NEW DELHI, MAY 30 (PTI): Accusing the government of attacking federalism, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday condemned the central ordinance on control of administrative services in Delhi and extended his party’s support to AAP in opposing it in Parliament when a bill will be brought to replace it.

T h e d eve l o p m e n t comes after Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal met Yechury at the CPI(M) office here, seeking the Left party’s support on the issue.

Yechury appealed to the Congress and other opposition parties to support the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on the issue, saying promulgation of the ordinance on administrative services in Delhi is a “brazen violation” of the Constitution and this can happen with the government of any non-BJP party.

He said the BJP government has been attacking the pillars of the Constitution --- its federal structure -- which he said was not only being “violated” but also destroyed.

“I appeal to all political parties to come forward to protest against this ordinance. Parties which have

not condemned it so far should understand that today it is the Delhi government, tomorrow it could be Kerala, Rajasthan and other places where there is Congress government or states with governments of regional parties. The Modi government can go to any extent to destabilise nonBJP government,” Yechury said in a joint press briefing soon after the meeting with Kejriwal.

“We have condemned the ordinance brought by the Centre. It is unconstitutional. It is also contempt

of court. We appeal to the biggest opposition party Congress to come forward to save our Constitution,” he asserted.

Kejriwal also said that when the ordinance comes up in Parliament, it is in the Rajya Sabha and that the opposition unity can reject it.

He said he has met TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, Telanana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackaray and NCP chief Sharad Pawar over the matter.

Asked about Congress state leaders’ opinion on not supporting the AAP, Kejriwal said the ordinance is not about him but about the entire country and the people of Delhi.

“This issue is not about Kejriwal, but of the people of this country. It is about the insult of the people of Delhi. I appeal to them to forget Kejriwal, but stand by the people of Delhi. They have to decide if they are with the BJP or with the people of Delhi,” he said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 30 (PTI): Leaders from BJP, AAP, and Congress on Tuesday met and condoled with the family members of the 16-year-old girl who was killed in broad daylight in the Shahbad Dairy area of northwest Delhi.

The girl was stabbed over 20 times and bludgeoned to death by a youth in a busy bylane of Shahbad Dairy area as passersby looked on in fear and disbelief.

While AAP leader Atishi met the girl’s family members, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced an ex-gratia sum of Rs 10 lakh to her kin to help them tide over the tragedy.

SHILLONG, MAY 30 (PTI): Concerned with the high dropout rate in Meghalaya, the state government on Tuesday signed an MoU with the National Institute of Open Schooling to facilitate the return of dropouts to educational institutions.

While Assam recorded the highest dropout rate in the country with 31 per cent of out-of-school students at the secondary level, Tripura with 29.8 per cent is ranked number 2, an official of the education department said.

Meghalaya with 27.9 per cent drop out rate in secondary level is ranked third followed closely by Madhya Pradesh (26.1 per cent) and Nagaland (24.4 per cent), he said. “An MoU for identification of Out of School Children (OoSC) and enrolling them into the NIOS Study Centres was signed between the Samagra Shiksha authorities and the National Institute of Open

GUWAHATI, MAY 30 (PTI): Two zebras were released at the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden after 30 years along with a giraffe by Environment and Forest Department Chandra Mohan Patowary.

The two zebras, one male and a female, have been brought from Mysore Zoo in Karnataka and they are one and three years old respectively. The forest minister on Monday named the zebras Joy and Joya.

SHILLONG, MAY 30: The Meghalaya government on Tuesday re-constituted an all-party committee to discuss on the implementation of job reservation roster and the contentious job reservation policy, a review to which is being sought by the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP).

The government made the announcement that it’s willing to discuss the sensitive state job reservation policy after VPP President and legislator, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, went into an indefinite fast. The fast is on its eighth day on Tuesday.

Basaiawmoit is on an indefinite hunger strike since May 23 after the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government refused to review the state job reservation policy which is in vogue for 51 now years ever since statehood, has also been included in the all-party panel.

VPP General Secretary, Ricky Syngkon said the party would send representatives for tomorrow’s (Wednesday) meeting on the roster system and job reservation policy. “Our party leader will decide on whether to continue or

withdraw his hunger strike depending on the outcome of the all-party committee meeting,” Syngkon said.

The VPP said it would continue with the protest if the party felt that the deliberation with the government was not as per their expectations. Earlier, Hynniewtrep Youth Council took out a procession in support of Basaiawmoit.

The nascent political party VPP, which won four seats in the February 27 Meghalaya Assembly elections, has been demanding for a review of the job reservation policy, saying that the state is “outdated” and “unfair” to the indigenous Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills population which has outnumbered the of the tribal Garos over the years.

Since the inception of Meghalaya in 1972, the state has followed the 40:40:5:15 job reservation policy. The policy earmarks 40 percent each for the indigenous people of Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills and Garo Hills, five percent more is reserved for other Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes tribes of the state and the rest 15 percent is open for general candidates.

Drone attack jolts Moscow, while Kyiv bombarded

KYIV, MAY 30 (AP): A rare drone attack jolted Moscow early Tuesday, causing only light damage but forcing evacuations as residential buildings were struck in the Russian capital for the first time in the war against Ukraine.

The Kremlin, meanwhile, pursued its relentless bombardment of Kyiv with a third assault on the city in 24 hours.

The Russian Defence Ministry said five drones were shot down in Moscow and the systems of three others were jammed, causing them to veer off course.

President Vladimir Putin called it a “terrorist” act by Kyiv.

The attack, causing only what Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called “insignificant damage” to several buildings, brought the war home to civilians in Russia’s capital.

CAPE TOWN, MAY 30 (AGENCIES): South African gover nment has granted diplomatic immunity to all international participants, including Russia President Vladamir Putin and other Russian officials, at BRICS-related events to be held in the country, local media reported.

The immunities and privileges in terms of the United Nations Convention grant immunity from personal arrest or detention.

A gazetted notice was issued by the International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor for the Diplomatic Immunity and Privileges Act to be granted to all international officials at BRICS-related events in the country, according to the Daily Maverick, a South Africanbased publication.

The notice, signed on May 19 and gazetted on Monday, states that Putin and his international counterparts will be granted immunities and privileges provided in terms of Section 6(1)(a) of the act.

“I haven’t decided to do any film as of now. I want to spend time with my family right now. I’m feeling good about it because that’s what I want to do right now. I’ll do a film when I’m emotionally ready, for sure,” Aamir told reporters here.

athlete registered three legal jumps of 16.34m, 16.78m and 16.25m. However, his second jump was enough to win him a medal and break the junior national record.

Julian Konle of Australia finished second with a jump of 16.60m while local athlete Dimitrios Tsiamis claimed third place with a 16.33m effort.

In the men’s long jump event at the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meet, India’s Jeswin Aldrin finished overall fifth with a best jump of 7.66m.

The 21-year-old Jeswin Aldrin holds the men’s long jump national record courtesy of an 8.42m leap at the National Open Jumps competition in Bellar y earlier this year.

NEW DELHI, MAY 30 (IANS): Indian athletes stole the show in meets in Europe in the last few days with hurdler Jyothi Yarraji bagging gold in the T-Meeting 2023 athletics meet in Tilburg, the Netherlands while Selva Prabhu wins a gold medal in the triple jump at VenizeliaChania 2023 athletics in Greece.

In Tilburg, Jyothi Yarraji clinched the gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles event while Mohammed Afsal Pulikkalakath finished third in the men’s 400m race at the T-Meeting 2023 athletics meet, on Monday.

The 23-year-old Jyothi clocked 13.20s in the final to win the event at the category E World Ranking competition. En route to the final, Jyothi topped the heats with a time of 13.08s.

Angel Agwazie of Belgium clinched the silver with 13.64s while Dutch athlete Mira Groot clocked 13.78s to bag the bronze.

This was Jyothi Yarraji’s second gold medal in two days. The Andhra runner clinched the gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles event at the Kurpfalz Gala 2023 athletics meet, in Weinheim, Germany on Saturday.

In Germany, Jyothi Yarraji clocked a seasonbest time of 12.84s - just 0.02 seconds off her national record -- in the final to medal at the World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger meet.

In the same meet, India’s Sapna Kumari finished fourth in the heats of the women’s 100m hurdles event but didn’t start in the final.

Wrestlers return without immersing medals in Ganga

HARIDWAR, MAY 30 (PTI): On a drama-filled Tuesday, some of India’s best wrestlers accompanied by hundreds of supporters gathered here on the banks of the Ganga, threatening to immerse their World and Olympic medals in the holy river but refrained after being convinced by Khap and farmer leaders who sought five days to address their grievances.

Olympic medallists Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat arrived at Har ki Pauri to protest the inaction against outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has allegedly sexually harassed several women grapplers.

Sakshi, Vinesh and her cousin Sangeeta were seen sobbing as their husbands tried to console them, even as scores of their supporters formed a cordon around them.

The wrestlers stood for about 20 minutes in silence after reaching Har ki Pauri. They then sat on the banks of the river holding their medals and looking distressed.

Bajrang joined them after 40 minutes. Sombir Rathi, husband of Vinesh, was holding the Asian

Games medals won by her wife. Sakshi was holding tightly the framed Olympic bronze medal she had won in 2016 in Rio. The whole episode was reminiscent of the 1960 incident when the legendary Muhammad Ali, then Cassius Clay, threw his Olympic gold medal into the Ohio river to protest racial segregation in the US. H owe ve r, a f t e r spending an hour and 45 minutes, they returned after several khap and political leaders urged them not to take such an extreme step.

As the deadline for the immersion of the medals drew closer, senior farmer leaders Sham Singh Malik and Naresh Tikait sought five days’ time from the grapplers to resolve the issue.

“The khap leaders put their turbans before us and said ‘do not lose hope’. Keep the dignity of the turban and return. So we decided to wait,” said wrestler Jitender Kinha, who has been a part of the protesting group.

Close on the heels of the wrestlers announcing they would immerse their medals, sports ministry sources said the trophies and medals also belonged to the country.

“The medal that the wrestlers have won do not belong to them alone, but to the country, because they played under the Indian flag and their medals have been won with the efforts of not just the wrestlers’ hard work

but also the hard work of multiple people like their coaches, support staff,” a ministry source told PTI. He added that crores of taxpayers’ money had gone into their training.

“More than 150 crores have been spent in the last 5 years in wrestling just so that the wrestlers can get the best training, coaching and infrastructure facilities.

They have been sent for foreign training, trained at national camps and competed internationally to hone their skills and win medals in Olympic, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. This money belongs to taxpayers.”

“India Gate is not a protest site and police will not allow wrestlers to protest there. We will suggest alternate site for protest including Ramleela Ground and Burari,” the source added.

The protesting wrestlers said after that they will come back to Delhi and sit on hunger strike at India Gate.

On Tuesday a statement from Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) further strengthened the report, and it stated that Bajrang Punia attended the meeting organised by SKM. “Bajrang Punia, r e p r e s e n t a t ive o f t h e Wrestlers’ Action Committee, was a special invitee in the meeting organised by SKM. Bajrang said that the working

committee of wrestlers will fully support the decisions of SKM in support of their struggle and will make all efforts to continue their fight for justice till the arrest of WFI chief, accused of sexual harassment of women wrestlers.

“It was assured in the meeting that SKM would support and actively participate in the struggle of the wrestlers till their victory. After discussion in the meeting, further course of action was decided.”

SKM will coordinate with all other sections including trade unions, women, youth, students and businessmen, intellectuals

and social movements to make this action massive and successful, it said.

“On June 5, SKM plans to expose Brij Bhushan criminal conduct so far and burn his effigy at village and town level across India. SKM will call a meeting of the National Council in New Delhi immediately after that and decide the future course of action to continue the struggle,” the statement read.

The protesting wrestlers have now reached their respective homes and are in talks with each other through phones and discussing further plans.
