NEW DELHI, MAR 30 (NPN): Nagaland has witnessed a significant rise in crime against children, some unreported, between 201921 where a total of 140 cases were registered and 22 persons convicted during the period. As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which compiles and publishes statistical data on crimes “Crime in India”, 59 cases were registered in 2019, chargesheets were filed in 35 cases, 48 persons were arrested and 31 were convicted.

In 2020, out of the 31 cases that were registered, chargesheets were filed in

26, 39 persons were arrested and 13 persons convicted.

In 2021, out of the 51 cases registered, chargesheets were filed in 37, 66 persons were arrested and five were convicted.

According to Union Ministry of Home Affairs, ‘police’ and ‘public order’ are State subjects under the 7th Schedule of the Constitution of India. “The responsibility of maintaining law and order, protection of life and property of the citizens

including investigation and prosecution of crime against citizens including children rest with the respective State governments,” it stated.

The State governments are competent to deal with such offences under the extant provisions of laws.

The ministry said it had been issuing advisories to States and Union Territories to effectively deal with crime against children.

As per available information, the Ministry of Women and Child Development is implementing a Centrally-sponsored scheme “Child Protection Services” (CPS) – formerly Integrated Child Protection Scheme –

director school education regarding Model College Wakching and reconstruction of GHS Wakching.

KSU stated that Model College Wakching remained non-functional even after five years of its inauguration on February 3, 2019. It also stated that GHS building at Wakching, which was constructed in 1974, had been abandoned ever since without any renovation.

KSU alleged that the “deliberate negligence” by the state government has resulted in the depletion of entire infrastructure.

Despite repeated appeals, KSU said the state government turned a deaf

ear to the issue risking the future of the students.

The union expressed apprehension that any form of development in the district was “nothing more than a petty appeasement policy towards the deprived community.”

KSU cautioned that failure to provide assurance within the stipulated period, the state government would be held solely responsible for any untoward incident that could arise. It may be mentioned that ENCSU last year had also urged the state government to make Wakching New Model College functional by academic session 2022.

DIMAPUR, MAR 30 (NPN): Lauding the State government’s stand for repeal of the Nagaland Municipal Act (NMA), 2001, Chakhesang People’s Organisation (CPO) urged upon the government to hold wider consultation and heed and consider people’s voice while framing the new Act.

CPO president Vezuhu Keyho and general secretary Chepetso Koza Chakhesang also assured that the Chakhesang tribe would always stand with fellow Nagas against all forms of exploitation and unfair appropriation of land and resources that belong to them. The signatories also appreciated the decision

powerful solar flare, causes blackouts:

WASHINGTON, MAR 30 (IANS): The Sun has emitted a strong solar flare severely affecting radio communications on Earth, according to NASA.

The flare, classified as X1.2, is the seventh solar flare to hit Earth this year, and was captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the Sun constantly.

X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength. The strong solar flare peaked at 10:33 p.m. ET (8:03 a.m. IST) on March 28, the observatory said.

“A R3 (Strong) HF radio blackout event occurred due to a X1.2 flare from Region 3256 on March 28, at 10:33 p.m. EDT,” National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center said in a statement. The strong solar flare

Meanwhile, a scientist at the University College London (UCL) has discovered a giant ‘hole’ on the surface of the Sun. Daniel Verscharen, Associate Professor of space and climate physics at UCL said the hole is 20 times larger than the Earth, and could result in a geomagnetic storm, reaching our planet at a speed of about 1.8 million miles per hour. It is likely to hit Earth by Friday, he was quoted as saying to Business Insider.

of the newly-formed coalition government to repeal the controversial NM Act in the just-concluded first Assembly session of 14th Assembly. CPO said the landmark decision would act as a precursor to restoring people’s trust in the government, despite divergent views on several other issues of public importance confronting the society today. They also mentioned that the burning desire of people of Nagaland is to live in peace without having to be forced to accept something that was utterly foreign and unacceptable to the people, such as certain parts of NMA which pose a clear and present threat

to the perpetuation of Naga people as a whole.

While the people genuinely respected the authority of a government, CPO said they also strongly believed that any popular government should in turn respect their sentiments and desires whom it represented.

They said the government was expected to reciprocate by protecting and safeguarding people from fringe elements that would harm the congenial socio-cultural atmosphere and legacy that was bequeathed to the people by the forefathers. In light of the government’s decision to repeal the Act, CPO also acknowledged the sincerity

and commitment shown to the people by the government led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio, and also power and parliamentary affairs minister KG Kenye who initiated the move to repeal the act. “We are equally thankful to all MLAs who walked the talk inside the Assembly and actively took part in taking the right step in shaping the history of our people, and for which posterity will not forget,” they stated. According to CPO, it was a win-win situation for the government, apex tribal bodies and pressure groups who had been vocal and consistently campaigned against the lacunas and flaws in NMA.

Zunheboto police continue ‘war on drugs’ operation

DIMAPUR, MAR 30

(NPN): After obtaining nonbailable warrant of arrest and search from the court on March 27, the Zunheboto police carried out “a search and arrest operation” at Mahadev Pharma in Dimapur and arrested alleged accused identified as one Manoj Barman and the searched premises (Shop & Godown) in Dimapur were sealed to “preserve the evidence.”

According to a DIPR report, the Zunheboto police had identified the premises as the source of the drugs after interrogation of the accused persons in relation with Aghunato police station C/No.06/23 u/s 22 (c)

NDPS Act & C/No.0/23 u/s 22 (c) NDPS Act.

Further, during further course of investigation in connection with Akuluto PS C/NO. 03/23, the Special Operation Team (SOT) Zunheboto seized Suspected Brown Sugar 11.63 grams (approx), from the possession of Viloto Muru, resident of ‘B’ Khel colony Satakha town, who was arrested on march 23, 2023.

As part of continued ‘war on drugs’ operation and based on intelligence input, Zunheboto police on March 23, conducted house raid at Inavi Colony, Aghunato town and seized 730 nos of suspected Spasmo

Proxyvon capsule, 17 nos of Cough Syrup. During the raid, police arrested three persons identified as Atoka Achumi (45), Atoba Kiho (38) and Nito Achumi (38) and registered three separate cases.

The report stated that none of the arrested persons were found to have any license/permit to sell restricted medicines or any medical prescription for its usage. During investigation, it was revealed that SP capsule and codeine (cough syrup) bottles were sourced from a person in Dimapur, who apparently ran a pharmacy and sold restricted drugs.

Since the arrested persons were found to be carrying the prescribed drugs without any prescription by a doctor or a medical petitioner, the report said there was reason to believe that the scheduled prescription drugs were being sold illegally in contravention of provision of law including the NDPS Act.

Therefore, the report said that non-bailable warrant of arrest and search warrant was obtained from the court and a search & arrest operation was carried out at Mahadev Pharma, which the Zunheboto police had identified as the source of the drugs after interroga-

tion of the accused persons.

According to the report, further investigation was being pursued to unveil the nexus in the case of drugs smuggling and obtaining further information about the origin and stocks of the scheduled drugs. Nagaland police have advised the public not to sell purchase or transport or use restricted/ prescription drugs without advice from medical practitioner. The Pharamacists and chemists have also been warned and advised that prescription drugs should not be sold without medical advice as the same was a contravention of

Germany ‘takes note’ of Rahul’s disqualification

BJPaccusesoppnof ‘invitingforeignpowers’to interfereininternalmatters

NEW DELHI, MAR 30 (PTI): Amidst an ongoing face-off between the Congress and the BJP over Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from Lok Sabha, Germany has ‘taken note’ of the issue, triggering a fresh political slugfest here on Thursday with the ruling party accusing the opposition party of “inviting foreign powers” to interfere in internal matters.

The BJP attack came after senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh thanked the German foreign ministry and Richard Walker, Chief International Editor of Deutsche Welle, for “taking note of how democracy is being compromised in India through the persecution of Rahul Gandhi”.

Singh also tagged a tweet by Walker in which the senior journalist had posted a video of a German foreign ministry spokesper-

son reacting to Gandhi’s disqualification. At a press briefing, Germany’s foreign ministry spokesperson has said, “we have taken note of the verdict of first instance against Indian opposition politician Rahul Gandhi as well as the suspension of his parliamentary mandate.”

“To our knowledge, Mr Gandhi is in a position to appeal the verdict. It will then become clear whether this verdict will stand and whether the suspension of his mandate has any basis,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying by Deutsche Welle. Germany expects that “standards of judicial independence and fundamental democratic principles” will equally apply to the proceedings against Rahul Gandhi, the spokesperson added.

A host of BJP leaders attacked the Congress and Singh, accusing the party of “inviting foreign interference” in internal affairs.

Sharing a screenshot of Digivijaya Singh’s tweet, Union Law Minister Kiren

Rijiju said, “Thank you Rahul Gandhi for inviting foreign powers for interference into India’s internal matters.” “Remember, Indian Judiciary can’t be influenced by foreign interference. India won’t tolerate ‘foreign influence’ anymore because our Prime Minister is:- Shri @narendramodi Ji,” Rijiju said. Appearing to be in damage control mode, the Congress said it firmly believes that India’s democratic processes themselves have to deal with the threats posed to its democracy. It also hit out at the BJP, accusing it of attempting to divert attention from the Adani issue. Without taking names,

lowing economic offenders such as Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi and Mehul Choksi get away and flee abroad with people’s money. In a series of tweets, Lalit Modi said, “I see just about every Tom, Dick and Gandhi associates again and again saying I am a fugitive of justice. why? How? and when was I... convicted of same.”

NEW DELHI, MAR 30

(PTI): The Congress on Thursday used embattled IPL founder Lalit Modi’s tweets threatening to take Rahul Gandhi to court, to attack the BJP and said that “global scamsters” were now coming to the defence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Former IPL chief Lalit Modi, accused of financial irregularities in India, launched a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, and also hit out at the Congress party for referring to him as a “fugitive of justice” even though he had never been convicted of any charges. Reacting to his remarks, Congress general secretary in-charge organisation K C Venugopal said,”Lalit Modi is a fugitive in multi-million dollar frauds whose cowardice made him run away. He now enjoys a plush life abroad thanks to BJP’s inaction.

It’s laughable if he thinks anyone takes him seriously.”

“A new low for PM Modi, that global scamsters are coming to his defence,” Venugopal said.

Taking a dig at the BJP, Congress’ media and publicity department chief Pawan

Mamata gives ‘aur ek dafa Delhi chalo’ call to oust BJP from power

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter,”@INCIndia firmly believes that India’s democratic processes themselves have to deal with the threats posed to our democracy by Mr. Modi’s assault on our institutions & his politics of vendetta, intimidation, threats & harassment.”

The Congress and opposition parties will take him on fearlessly, Ramesh said. Attacking Rijiju for his comments, Congress’ media department head Pawan Khera said, “Mr. Rijiju, why divert from the main issue? The issue is that the Prime Minister cannot answer Rahul Gandhi’s questions about Adani.”

Instead of “misleading” people, please answer the questions, Khera said.

Slamming the Congress over Singh’s tweet, Information and Broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur said,”disgrace to nation, @ INCIndia & @RahulGandhi don’t believe to fight India’s democratic, political and legal battle within coun-

try, hence, invite foreign powers to interfere in our internal matter. But New India headed by @narendramodi Ji will not tolerate any foreign intervention.”

Finance Minister Niramala Sitharaman also lambasted the Congress over Singh’s tweet. “Apparent that @INCIndia wants foreign interference in our affairs. Sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Communist Party of China with opaque contents. During interactions abroad, plead for help to change government. Thank them when help forthcoming. Any more proof needed?” she tweeted.

Commerce minister Piyush Goyal retweeted Sitharaman’s comments.

Tagging Singh’s tweet, BJP’s foreign affairs department head leader Vijay Chauthaiwale said on Twitter,”look how happy @digvijaya_28 ji with comments from Germany. It only shows how they are desperate to involve external agencies in domestic matters.”

KOLKATA, MAR 30

(PTI): Taking forward her sharp attack against archrival BJP, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, who has been on an overnight ‘sit-in protest’ here against the Centre’s alleged discrimination against West Bengal, called for an “aur ek dafa Delhi chalo” (another march to Delhi) to oust the right-wi ng party from power.

A day before, the West Bengal chief minister and stormy petrel of Indian politics had in a change of stance urged all parties in the country to unitedly fight the BJP in next year’s Lok Sabha election, a departure from an earlier decision to remain equidistant from both the Congress and the saffron party.

The “aur ek bar Delhi Chalo” call made from the feet of the Dr B R Ambedkar’s statue on Kolkata’s Red Road, an obvious take on Netaji S ubhas Bose’s more famous “Delhi Chalo” clarion call delivered in

Singapore 80 years ago, resounded well with her supporters, who had thronged the venue of the sit-in, in large numbers.

Banerjee had started the two-day demonstration on Wednesday noon against the Centre’s “stoppage” of funds to the state for MGNREGA and other schemes of the housing and public works departments.

“All of us have to unite, fight against the BJP and defeat it. If needed, we will march to Delhi to protest against the Centre’s attempts to destroy the country’s federal structure and keep states ruled by non-BJP parties bereft of funds.

AAP launches ‘Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao’ campaign

NEW DELHI, MAR 30 (IANS): The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday launched a nationwide ‘Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao’ poster slogan in 11 languages against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Earlier, AAP workers had put up posters of, ‘Modi Hatao, Desh Bachao’ all over the national capital. Taking cognisance of the matter, the police had filed 49 FIRs and had arrested six people, including owners of two printing press firms. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai stated that all the state units of the party have

Gopal Rai

been asked to paste the posters in their respective areas. Rai added, “I want to know if this poster is objectionable? If the Prime Minister is failing to fulfill people’s aspirations, then he is attack-

ing the country’s constitution.” Criticising the arrests, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that even the British did not arrest those who put posters against them during the Freedom movement. He said, “Even before independence, when freedom fighters used to put up posters, no FIRs were filed or actions taken against them by the British. Bhagat Singh had pasted many posters during British rule, not a single FIR was registered against him.” BJP supporters, on the other hand put up posters of, ‘Arvind Kejriwal Ko Hatao, Delhi Bachao’, in several areas.

Beyond the VVIPs

It is not unnatural to do some quick window dressing for an event which means that the host has to put up the best foot forward in order to impress the visitors and guests. This is what is being done by the state government to welcome the distinguished dignitaries of the G20 business summit who will be arriving Kohima via Dimapur for the April 5 conclave. Sprucing up is not a difficult thing to do but even that has its limits. According to the state chief secretary Jane Alam, about 110 delegates are being expected to visit, of which about 100 will be from 28 G20 countries and the remaining from international organizations that are part of the grouping. The delegates represent big continental corporations, ambassadors and other senior representatives of their respective countries will be attending the summit. The state government is leaving no stone unturned to welcome the visitors with traditional Naga hospitality. For this, the state government has also decided to relax sale and consumption of alcohol for the foreign guests so as to ensure they lack nothing. The relaxation of the NLTP Act 1989 is supposed to be for a limited period of the summit. It is expected that the relaxation could be extended in some way and it won’t be unexpected since there has been a growing realisation that the dry law is not only a failure but has become a lucrative source for black marketing and black money. The worse is that the NLTP Act has neither prevented sale or consumption of alcohol while the government is losing very heavily on excise revenue. Be that as it may, the other most important aspect for welcoming thousands of visitors and travellers is the urgent need for improvement of Nagaland’s only airport and railway station at Dimapur, the latter being among the oldest in the region. Both these services are way behind airports and railway stations of neighbouring states. Nagaland Post has been highlighting on the factors behind the stagnation of these two very vital links which have almost come to a grinding halt. The reason is due to encroachment of and the main factors is because the local authorities have failed to nip trouble in the bud. The issue of encroachment of land at the airport figured in the 12th session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly. The minister in-charge disclosed the names of 22 persons who had encroached airport land. The minister expressed the hope that the High Court would pass a favourable judgement and after which the state will issue eviction order. The state government finally woke up from slumber and filed a petition in the high court only in 2022 and exposed lack of seriousness. The same is the case with Dimapur railway station where no development can take place due to encroachment. The highest revenue for NFR is Guwahati with around 20,000 train passengers daily, while the second highest revenue is from Dimapur with a little over 4000 passengers l daily. However today, NFR has removed many trains from Dimapur such as Nagaland Express and BG Express to Assam. The state government owes an explanation as to why it has been inactive with regard to land issues at the airport and railway station at Dimapur since these are vital for trade, travel and tourism- the 3 ‘Ts’ for economic development of the state.

Holiness or Hardness Toward God?

He…wondered that there was no intercessor…

—Isaiah 59:16

The reason many of us stop praying and become hard toward God is that we only have an emotional interest in prayer. It sounds good to say that we pray, and we read books on prayer which tell us that prayer is beneficial— that our minds are quieted and our souls are uplifted when we pray. But Isaiah implied in this verse that God is amazed at such thoughts about prayer.

Worship and intercession must go together; one is impossible without the other. Intercession means raising ourselves up to the point of getting the mind of Christ regarding the person for whom we are praying (see Philippians 2:5). Instead of worshiping God, we recite speeches to God about how prayer is supposed to work.

Are we worshiping God or disputing Him when we say, “But God, I just don’t see how you are going to do this”?

This is a sure sign that we are not worshiping. When we lose sight of God, we become hard and dogmatic. We throw our petitions at His throne and dictate to Him what we want Him to do. We don’t worship God, nor do we seek to conform our minds to the mind of Christ. And if we are hard toward God, we will become hard toward other people.

Are we worshiping God in a way that will raise us up to where we can take hold of Him, having such intimate contact with Him that we know His mind about the ones for whom we pray? Are we living in a holy relationship with God, or have we become hard and dogmatic?

Do you find yourself thinking that there is no one interceding properly? Then be that person yourself. Be a person who worships God and lives in a holy relationship with Him. Get involved in the real work of intercession, remembering that it truly is work— work that demands all your energy, but work which has no hidden pitfalls. Preaching the gospel has its share of pitfalls, but intercessory prayer has none whatsoever.

Installation of opposition-less government in Nagaland- What citizen can do?

The Nagaland Legislative Assembly election was held in Nagaland on 27 February 2023 to elect all 60 members of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. The votes were counted and the results were declared on 2 March 2023. All the secrets have been revealed. All the cards have been shown. After the election, coalition of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party and Bharatiya Janata Party formed the state government, with Neiphiu Rio becoming Chief Minister for the record fifth time. The BJP retained its share in Nagaland in 2023. It has become a part of the government. The NDPP-BJP alliance bettered its tally by 3 to 33 seats from 30 last time when it formed the government with support of 4 other MLAs (2 from NPP, 1 from JD (U) and 1 independent. The BJP saw an upswing in its vote share in Nagaland, where it is led by its charismatic party chief Temjen Imna Along. While Nagaland shed the ignominious record of being the lone state not to have even one woman legislator since Independence, having an opposition-less assembly for the second consecutive term has only helped Nagaland add yet another inglorious chapter to its political history – achieved by undermining the electorate’s verdict.

In all this drama, Nagaland witnessed the rise of two men with their own, individual distinct political stands. Kahuto Chishi Sumi, an independent candidate and Joel Naga, President of Rising People’s Party were defeated however, their presence and the voting share that they garnered gave a strong signal to the current politicians, supporters and masses that the ‘alternative political culture’ for the state of Nagaland has begun to be woven. Kahuto chishi successfully managed to get 1,671 votes which accounts to 5.24% of the votes whereas Joel Naga who received 3,718 votes which accounts to 16.49% of the votes directly affected the vote bank of veteran politician R. Khing in Tseminyu constituency. It seems both Kahuto Chishi and Joel Naga firmly decided follow the age old formula of politics- “WILL

Introduction: Every Naga tribe of north eastern states of India and western hilly regions of Myanmar where Naga resides have major festivals of their own and they usually celebrate according to tribal customary practices and traditional system.

Those festivals have a significances and importance of their own.

The celebration period continues from the month of February till October and normally feasting activities stops only in winter season accept minor festival of jhum farming jungle cleaning feast. And the trees felling and vegetation cleaning is one day feast observe in jhum field. Like that of rest of the Nagas, Konyak Naga community celebrates Aoleang festival which is very important and a week-long feast.

The Aoleang festival normally celebrates within the months from February to May every year by the Phom, as Monyiu, Ao as Moatsu, Tangsas as Moh-Mol, Wancho as Oriah and Konyak of Aoleang. Among the many festivals Aoleang stands top in feasting stratums of the Konyak and the second most celebrated is harvest festival called “Lau-ong Mo” of Konyak, Chachaban for Wancho and Chalo-Loku of Nocktee. In the same spring season, Assamese celebrates Bihu, Bengalis of Poila Boisakh which is their New Year festival, and this Poila Boisakh new year celebration spread across the border of Bangladesh, West Bengal, Tripura and some districts in Assam. The Pongal festival of southern Indian states like; Tamil, Kerela, Andhra and Karnataka occurred in February which is harvest feast. Around the world there are hundreds of festivals that are being celebrated in the months of February to April and most of them are related as New Year festival. The Konyak, Phom, Ao,Wancho and Tangsa Nagas festivals are coinciding with Easter “Eostre”pagan goddess Feast of the Europeans. The resurrection Sunday is coincided with the Easter Sunday in Roman world as its Roman King Constantine

LOSE, WILL CAUSE THE OPPONENT TO DEFEAT, WILL WIN” (Haarengay, Haraayengay, Jeetayangay).

Moreover, in current assembly election many educated and vigilant citizens belonging to various villages in the state of Nagaland successfully raised their voice and fought against the illegal, unconstitutional, criminal practice of declaration of “CONSENSUS CANDIDATE”. Stand taken by such free, fearless and spirited Naga individuals sent a strong message to the “village councils” in the state that village councils being auxiliary to the administration under Sec 15 of The Nagaland Village Council Act 1978 was bound to be remained neutral in matters related to elections- in short, interference of Village council in election process is a criminal offence.

Nagaland State assembly election of 2023 is marked with the fall of noted, powerful leaders, rise of woman’s power and initiation of politics of ‘transformation’, also eventually turned out to be different than other elections in Nagaland that were fought in the past. The Frontier Nagaland Movement, which positively taken up its pace and reached to every nook and corner of the Eastern parts of Nagaland also cast its shadow over the election as we have seen the defeat of good number of sitting Members of Nagaland Legislative Assembly representing the various constituencies in the Eastern region of the state. One of the biggest example of anti-incumbency factor especially in the eastern region is S. Pangnyu Phom, former minister of Health and Family welfare in the fourth Neiphiu Rio Ministry; who had been elected in Nagaland Legislative Assembly election in 2008, 2013 and 2018 from 50 Longleng A/C from Bhartiya Janata Party has been defeated by debutant A. Pongshi Phom in the General Assembly Elections 2023. There are other examples too, however, the primary take away from all these observation is that the people of Nagaland are now awakened to their own ‘space’ in the nation which I believe can

change the course of destiny of the Nagas in coming days.

While appreciating the “changing wind” in the state of Nagaland and saluting the spirit of “National citizenry” shown by the Naga people, especially well educated, young generation, I reiterate the wise words of my student from 6th Semester, Dept of Political Science. I quote her verbatim- “THE TIME HAS COME TO TEST THE METAL OF ALL THOSE SITTING IN THE NAGALAND STATE ASSEMBLY. LET US MAKE THEM FULFILL EACH AND EVERY PROMISE THEY MADE DURING 2023 ASSEMBLY ELECTION CAMPAIGNS”. These words are very valuable. A young Girl courageously expressing her desire to make ‘her’ state government accountable tells us about the direction in which todays’ Nagaland is positively moving.

In the state Assembly elections, for which results were declared on March 2, the pre-poll alliance partners NDPP-BJP won 25 and 12 seats respectively, totaling 37 in the 60-member House. Other political parties, including NCP have won 7 seats, NPP 5, LJP (Ram Vilas), Naga People’s Front (NPF) & RPI (Athawale) 2 each, JD(U) 1 and Independents 4. This is the first time that Nagaland has witnessed the victory of so many political parties in the state Assembly elections. LJP (RV) and RPI (Athawale) are newbies in the State politics.

Despite current political diversity; which of course is a highly positive political development, it is tragic to observe that the current Nagaland state assembly is opposition-less. As Nagaland has witnessed its third opposition-less government with all the parties extending support to BJP-NDPP alliance, political analysts and commentators in the state have slammed the arrangement, calling it a mockery of democracy. When there is no opposition or less opposition, the government itself becomes totalitarian where they will have absolute authority whatever they implement as no one will be there for an objection towards the decision of the

government. When there is strong and effective opposition in large they keep in check every move of the government. Moreover, it needs to be taken into account that, opposition or no opposition is primarily an electoral mandate and not the assembly’s mandate and if the people-that elected political representatives ‘will’ that the latter or former is needed, then that needs to be adhered to and not on the whims of the elected. In short every MLA or MP must take ‘sentiments’ of the people from his constituency into account. The election for the government was meant for the welfare of the people of the state that voted for them through a democratic process.

Parliamentary democracy is characterised by a system of mutual accountability of the ruling party and opposition party and a much-crucial deliberative process. The Political Opposition in parliament and state assembly plays a crucial role in preserving the true essence of the democracy and raising the concerns of a larger number of people of the country. The role of the opposition is to ensure that any government maintains the constitutional guardrails. As a polity following the ‘first past the post’ system of voting, the role of the opposition is especially significant. Engendering state assembly opposition that is the conscience of the people of Nagaland is important for the state of Nagaland to function as a true democracy. Modern generation of the Nagaland is very much aware of this fact.

Now, how to positively initiate checks and balance mechanism in the absence of opposition in the Nagaland State assembly?

As a constitutionally empowered citizen of India, there are many ways to positively engage with the government.

An individual can submit a suggestion to the government of Nagaland. The best way is to write letter to the secretary in the concerned ministry/department, however, on some occasions, there may be doubts as to which ministry is concerned with the suggestion. In that eventuality, one may address their letter to the

Konyak Aoleang Festival

has adopted Christian faith as their national religion of Rome in 313AD. It is also fact to note that, the Passover Feast of the Jews falls within the Easter feast of the Romans and later Easter celebration became the Lord Jesus resurrection Sunday from the dead. Reason being was, just before the beginning of Passover day feast, Lord Jesus was crucified on Friday and the next day was Saturday of the Jullian calendar which is 7th Sabbath day of Jewish calendar depiction. The Lord Jesus was resurrected on Sunday, the first day of the Jewish weekend and the Sunday might have coincided with Easter festival which converted Easter feast day as Resurrection Sunday in Christendom.

The Aoleang Monyu is a New Year festival of Konyak Naga usually celebrates in spring season. Though this festival has been celebrating from the different time zone yet it is more or less related to harvest feast because after burning down of the fell vegetations and stumps in the jhum field, just before the beginning of seeds sowing, various rites and ceremonies have to be performed by the priest, by invoking blessings upon the crops, livestock and health of the people. The Aoleang festival celebrates within the period of three (3) months starting from February till April. The first ever this spring New Year festival celebration usually starts by Ukha and Jakphang villagers in upper area of Konyak and the Pongo village in Longleng District of Phom community celebrates last of all which marks the end of Aoleang Monyiu festival. However, most of the upper range villages of Konyak, usually celebrates in March to April as per luni-moon cycle and solarSun rising indication. But then no villages dare to overtake the sequence of Aoleang Monyu celebration time frame. As per southern Konyak tradition, until and unless the Chui village Chief Angh announced to begin the feast and subsequently started

celebration by Chingkhao Laipa villagers, they won’t celebrate because it is a traditional practices and taboo to do so. The consequences of overtaking the rows of back-to-back celebration may face the wrath of divine curse upon the crops, livestock and human beings. The folk song says, “Chi Wang me dak oh Laipa ma jaih pu Wan” which means this festival had been started by the Chief Angh of Chi village and brought forth through Chingkhao villagers. But then in the northern part of Konyak area, first of all Hongphoi and Wangla villages must start celebration of Aoleang Festival, subsequently other villages will follow suit the celebration en masse. As per Hongphoi and Wangla villagers tradition and history, these two villages were lately migrated to present Konyak territory from the Assam valley because majority of the Konyak, Wancho and Nocktee communities settled once in Brahmaputra river valley of Sibsagar District in Assam after crossing Patkai mountain range from eastern country site and subsequently they have migrated towards the present hilly tract of Eastern Naga Hills. This is to note that late settlement of Hongphoi and Wangla villagers might be a true story because while they have departed from their inmates in Assam plain, they have requested to mark the message of Aoleang Festival being celebrated by sending the spring red flowers to flow on the river course so as to learn that their own friends, lovers and relatives are celebrating the festival.

It is also empirical viewed that, Aoleang Monyu festival is related with Assamese Bihu and among the Konyak Naga villages, only the Hongphoi and Wangla villagers had made hollow wooden drum covering with animal’s skin like that of Assamese and Ao Naga people did. And they does beats wooden drum while dancing and singing folk songs and such dancing and singing follow with the drum beats did not know to the rest

Hon’ble Chief Minister or his Excellency the Hon’ble Governor of Nagaland. These letters are usually acknowledged and followed up by the CMO or the Raj Bhavan as the case may be. A local MLA can regularly be contacted through personal meetings, letters or e-mails, he may be regularly reminded of his/her own promises and his/her party’s “Election Manifesto” and citizens can see that everything that is listed in the manifesto be implemented.

A common citizen is fully empowered to take necessary steps to establish the accountability of his government in the context of its legal and constitutional obligations. Moreover, a Public Interest Litigation-a potent weapon for the enforcement of “public duties” where executive action or misdeed resulted in public injury, and as a result any citizen of India or any social action groups can approach the apex court of the country under Art. 32 of the Constitution seeking legal remedies in all cases where the interests of general public or a section of the public are at stake. A Public Interest Litigation can be filed in High Court (Under Art. 226)/Supreme Court (under Art. 32) against a State, Central Govt., Municipal Authorities. The definition of State is the same as given under Article 12 of the Constitution and this includes the Governmental and Parliament of India and the Government and the Legislature of each of the States and all local or other authorities within the territory of India or under the control of the Government of India.

The Constitution of India has empowered the people to positively engage with their government. There is no reason to feel sad to see opposition-less government. If an individual NAGA citizen desire to bring change in Nagaland he/ she alone can do so by taking help of the Constitution of India and the legal mechanisms available at his/her disposal.

It is easy to establish accountability, when mind and heart is genuine.

of the Konyak society.

Importance of Aoleang Festival: I did intensive study on this Aoleang Monyu Festival and some of the important findings are quoted here for populous consumption. And the youngsters who are keen interested in the subject may do more research on it so as to benefit the readers, researcher scholars and historians in long run. The practice and tradition of Aoleang Monyu festival differ from each other and it may vary from region to region in Konyak community. However, the invocation of the blessings, performing the rites and offering ceremonies by the priest, celebration, dancing, singing folk songs, merry making and beliefs are all common and had a same meaning. One of the significances of the Aoleang Monyu festival is; this celebration did mark the New Year or new beginning of life and season. During festive season a priest has to perform rituals and ceremonies and also offers meat, food grains and animal sacrificial to malevolent spirits. By such rituals and ceremonies, various predictions are being made for whole year eventualities of life and activities.

During the festival, peace treaty and reconciliation are be made between the two warring villages and disputes among the communities, clans, families and individuals may be settled down amicably for lasting peace, harmony and co-existence. Also Aoleang festive creates opportunity and congenial atmosphere to mingle with opposite sex as a result match making is done or suitor may propose for bride’s hand during this occasion. In day one of luni-Moon appeared in the sky and solar-Sun rising indication is announced by the old people and the priest of the village, young people have to start beating Log Drum in the Morung. The first drum beating sound is an announcement of the Aoleang Festival approaching and the first-ever Cuckoo bird call sound is sign of spring

season fall. Moreover, rich traditional attires, ornaments, and properties are being showcased and exhibited during the Aoleang festival and adult men and women also singing folk songs and dances with peers. Festival is joyous and merry making occasion also treated as marketing days because buying and selling are also done here. An adult who had attained puberty may admit into Morung or community life with their peer which is known as “Ei” same age group ism and it is the new beginning of soldier stage life. Aoleang festival displays the rich traditional attires, ornaments, customary and cultural practices and also preserves folk songs and dances with participation in celebration.

Another significance of Aoleang festival is; the in-laws, family members and relatives are get together and made bond of friendship in celebration with them. Because during the festival, married away aunts, sisters/daughters along with their spouses and children, also guests and friends from another villages are cordially invited to join the celebration.

And the gifts in kinds, ornaments, meat and best food grains are to be exchanged. And the married away aunts and sisters/ daughters would be given limb portion of killed animals in feast and variety of food is serves. Such gifts of provisions to married away female offspring of the family means, the paternal family is compensating for the denied of their parent’s immoveable property inheritance rights. This compensating to each other is a manner of give and take policy because during the marriage of the daughter, the suitor’s family has to pay bride’s price as paternal family is losing the work force in farming and new member is adding to the family. Therefore, such compensation with gifts and family bond is an importance of Aoleang festival.

30 (PTI): Ram Navami was celebrated across the country on Thursday with grand processions and special pujas, but the festivities were marred by the deaths of 14 devotees in separate incidents in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, and clashes and arson in some parts of the country.

Eleven people died during a ‘havan’ at Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore after they fell into a well as its cover caved-in under the weight of a huge crowd, while three others got fatally electrocuted during a Ram Navami procession in Rajasthan’s Kota.

Man rescued from mob after beef found in house

DHANBAD (JHARKHAND), MAR 30

(PTI): The police on Thursday rescued a youth, a resident of Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district, from a rampaging mob which claimed that beef was found in his house.

Six people including three police personnel were injured and the force used batons to disperse the attackers who also ransacked police vehicles and set on fire some goods kept in front of the house of the accused.

Slaughter of bovine animals and selling their meat are banned in Jharkhand.

The situation is under control now, Nirsa Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Pitamber Singh Kherwar said.

The incident occurred at Bhurkunda locality under Nirsa police station, around 190 km from the state capital Ranchi, where some villagers reportedly found a slaughtered cow and its meat in the house of a person identified as Nasruddin Ansari.

Soon, a mob assembled there and started throwing stones at the house. Some household goods kept in front of it were torched.

President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished people on the auspicious occasion.

“’Maryada Purushottam’ Lord Ram’s life was based on sacrifice, tapasya, restraint and resolve,” Modi tweeted.

The incident occurred at around 5.45 pm when the procession was being taken out with display of stunts. The iron ring with which the youngsters were displaying stunts got stuck in a high tension overhead power line.

Rahul’s disqualification manipulated by BJP govt: Kharge

KOTTAYAM (KERALA), MAR 30 (PTI): Congress

president Mallikarjun

Kharge on Thursday said the hurried disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha was the “darkest day in Indian democracy” and indicated “brutal vindictiveness” of the Narendra Modi government.

Kharge claimed the BJP government “manipulated” the entire matter beginning from the filing of the defamation case against Gandhi, for his remarks during an election campaign speech back in 2019 in Kolar, Karnataka, and ending with his disqualification on the very next day of his conviction.

“The disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha was the darkest day in Indian democracy.

“The manipulations of the BJP government in the matter have to be pointed out and if you see the timeline of the whole case it would be clearer from that,” he said.

The Congress chief further said that “such actions are condemnable, destroy the democratic norms of our country and push us towards a dictatorial regime”. He

also said that the haste with which Gandhi was disqualified, despite the trial court giving one month to file an appeal against his conviction and sentence, “indicates the brutal vindictiveness of the Modi government”.

Kharge was speaking here at the inauguration of the year-long centenary celebrations of the Vaikom Satyagraha, a renaissance movement against untouchability and linked to temple access.

The satyagraha, which began on March 30, 1924 and ended on November 23, 1925, was a non-violent agitation for access to the prohibited public environs of the Vaikom Temple in the Kingdom of Travancore.

During their attempt to take out the ring, seven persons sustained injuries, three of whom died, official said. Violence broke out between two groups when a procession was taken out in West Bengal’s Howrah city. Several vehicles were torched and shops were ransacked on Thursday evening. Police said a number of people were detained in this connection.

The police used force to disperse the mob. A large contingent of police was deployed in the locality where the situation is stated to be under control.

As the March 10 order to replace the English word ‘Curd’ with ‘Dahi’ left a sour taste in the two southern states, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said the Food Business Operators (FBOs) may use the term ‘Curd’ along with any other prevalent regional common name in brackets on the label.

For example, ‘Curd (dahi)’ in Hindi or ‘Curd (mosaru) in Kannada, ‘Curd (thayir)’ in Tamil, ‘Curd (perugu)’ in Telugu can be used, the FSSAI said in a statement.

The order has been revised following various represe ntations received

recently on the omission of the term ‘curd’ from the Standards of Fermented Milk Products and mentioning only the word ‘Dahi’. “As many representations were received recently on the omission of the term ‘Curd’ from the Standards of Fermented Milk Products, it has been decided that FBOs may use the term curd along with any other designation (prevalent regional common name) in brackets on the label,” the FSSAI said.

In its earlier directive issued to milk cooperatives and private dairy located in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the FSSAI had asked them to use the term ‘Dahi’ with prevalent regional names in

brackets. They were told to use regional nomenclature used in different states for ‘Dahi’ while labelling the product, like Dahi (curd), Dahi (mosaru), Dahi (thayir), Dahi (perugu). The directive was issued to Karnataka Cooperative Milk Producers Federation (KMF), Bengaluru Rural and Ramanagara District Cooperative Milk Producers Societies Union Ltd, Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation and Hatsun Agro Products Ltd.

A row erupted after the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation -- which sells dairy products in brand name Aavin -- declined to use the Hindi term ‘Dahi’ in its printed sachets.

NEP based on teachings of visionaries like Gandhiji: Shah

HARIDWAR, MAR 30

(PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday hailed the central government’s New Education Policy for its emphasis on learning in mother tongue and universal education based on the teachings of Indian visionaries such as Mahatma Gandhi and Dayanand Saraswati.

Addressing the 113th convocation of the Gurukula Kangri here, Shah credited the university (deemed to be) for the revival of vedic education in India and combining it with modern education.

Shah paid tributes to the university’s founder Swami Shraddhanand saying he set India’s education system free from the

stranglehold of the British and revived the country’s vedic education system, all the while emphasising on culture and modern education.

Shah praised the NEP brought by the Narendra Modi-led central government saying it represents the combined visions of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, Swami Shraddhanand, Mahatma Gandhi, and Lala Lajpat Rai.

“The new education policy, which is the country’s third, contains the visions of four great people. Accessible education as propagated by Maharshi Dayanand, combining vedic education with modern as propagated by Swami Shraddhanand, Mahatma Gandhi’s educa-

Govt exempts import duty on spl-use drugs

NEW DELHI, MAR 30

(PTI): The government has exempted basic customs duty on all drugs and food for special medical purposes imported for personal use for treatment of rare diseases.

The import duty waiver will come into effect from April 1.

Also, the government has exempted Pembrolizumab (Keytruda), used in treatment of various cancers, from basic customs duty.

Drugs/Medicines generally attract basic customs duty of 10 per cent, while some categories of life saving drugs/vaccines attract a concessional rate of 5 per cent or Nil.

“The Central Government has given full exemption from basic customs duty on all drugs and Food for Special Medical Purposes imported for personal use for treatment of all Rare Diseases listed under the National Policy for Rare Diseases 2021,” a finance ministry statement said.

Food for Special Medical Purposes is a food formulation intended to provide nutritional support to persons who suffer from a specific disease, disorder or a medical condition, as a part of their dietary management.

In order to avail this exemption, the individual importer has to produce a certificate from Central or State Director Health Services or District Medical Officer/Civil Surgeon of the district.

While exemptions have already been provided to specified drugs for treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy or Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the government has been receiving many

Indian economy likely to grow at 6.5%: CEA

NEW DELHI, MAR

representations seeking customs duty relief for drugs and medicines used in treatment of other rare diseases.

Drugs or Special Foods required for the treatment of these diseases are expensive and need to be imported.

The ministry said it is estimated that for a child weighing 10 kg, the annual cost of treatment for some rare diseases, may vary from Rs 10 lakh to more than Rs 1 crore per year with treatment being lifelong and drug dose and cost, increasing with age and weight.

“This exemption will result in substantial cost savings and provide much needed relief to the patients,” the ministry said.

Addressing an event here, Nageswaran further said going forward, global exports growth volumes may be somewhat tepid in terms of their growth rates due to the kind of uncertainties the world is facing.

“So, I think the restoration of the financial, credit and the investment cycle in the commercial sector and the real estate sector will probably see us growing on an average of six and a half per cent in the coming decade,” he said.

The Asia’s thirdlargest economy recorded year-on-year growth of 4.4 per cent in OctoberDecember, down from 11.2 per cent a year back and 6.3 per cent in the preceding quarter.

India to unveil new Foreign Trade Policy today

NEW DELHI, MAR 30 (PTI): India will unveil its much-awaited new Foreign Trade Policy 2023-28 on Friday, with a view to boost exports amid slowing global trade. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will announce the foreign trade policy, according to the ministry.

Noting that it was easier to change oneself than another, she discussed the malady of internalised patriarchy and urged all women present to confront this intimate enemy. She stressed for peaceful and non-violent strategies to challenge inequalities inherent in patriarchy.

NMA legal adviser Zheviholi Swu unpacked the legalities of the Municipal Act and traced various legal actions and recourses taken by petitioners, the Government of Nagaland and the court to date.

Given that the

Act was a constitutional legislation, she asserted that its implementation was inevitable and that the latest bid by NLA to repeal this would be viewed seriously as it was sub-judice in Supreme Court. She said Any person or organisation aggrieved by the court order could implead themselves in the case. Speeches were also delivered by director of Women Studies Centre, Nagaland University Prof Lungsang, NMA founder and current adviser Sano Vamuzo, Abeni TCK Lotha, adviser NMA,who was also the chairperson of Red Cross Society, Nagaland.

During the open discussion, women representatives from NDPP, BJP and other party workers as well as representatives from Naga Women Hoho, Dimapur, Zeliang Mepui

It stated that police action was solely intended to check drug abuse and not hinder any business activity.

PhonePe calls off deal to acquire ZestMoney: Report

NEW DELHI, MAR 30 (AGENCIES): After three months of discussions, PhonePe has called the deal to acquire buy-nowpay-later (BNPL) platform ZestMoney, a report on Thursday said. The announcement of the same will soon be made to the employees of ZestMoney.

acquisition after months of due diligence.”

The main reasons the deal fell out were lapses in due diligence, disagreement over valuation, sustainability of the business and the platform’s shareholding

structure. Reports also said that ZestMoney’s valuation of $200-300 million might also be a reason for the deal not fructifying.

In September 2021, the company raised $50 million from Zip and was expecting

Kd

to raise $100 million more. But it could not go ahead with the deal due to the global slowdown.

FORT CAMPBELL

(US), MAR 30 (AP):

Nine people were killed in a crash involving two Army Black Hawk helicopters in Kentucky, a military spokesperson said. Nondice Thurman, a spokesperson for Fort Campbell, said Thursday morning that the deaths happened the previous night in southwestern Kentucky during a routine training mission. A statement from Fort Campbell says the two HH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, part of the 101st Airborne Division, crashed around 10 p.m. Wednesday in Trigg County, Kentucky. The 101st Airborne confirmed the crash about 30 mile (48 kilometres) northwest of Fort Campbell. The crash is under investigation.

Islamic teachings

DUBAI, MAR 30 (AP):

Prosecutors in the Arab Gulf nation of Bahrain on Thursday have handed down yearlong prison sentences to three people for debating Islamic theology in a series of blog posts and online videos. The three are part of a local cultural society called Tajdeed, Arabic for Renewal, that says it questions traditional Islamic scholarship and jurisprudence but not the religion itself. Critics, including prominent Shiite clerics in the kingdom, have accused the group of attacking the foundations of Islam and have waged a campaign of incitement against them. The case has divided the majority Shiite community in Bahrain, which is ruled by a Sunni monarchy.

4 Pak policemen killed in 2 coordinated attacks

ISLAMABAD, MARCH 30 (IANS): Four policemen were killed and six others injured in two coordinated attacks on Thursday in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, an official said. Some unknown attackers stormed a checkpost with sophisticated weapons in Lakki Marwat district, injuring five cops in an exchange of fire, Xinhua news agency quoted the police official as saying. The attackers fled the scene amid retaliatory fire by the police who also called for an extra contingent of force for a search operation.

Philippine ferry fire kills 31 people; at least 7 missing

MANILA, MAR 30 (AP):

A fire broke out on a ferry in the southern Philippines and raged overnight for eight hours, killing at least 31 of the approximately 250 passengers and crew, officials said Thursday.

Many of the more than 200 people who survived the blaze jumped off the MV Lady Mary Joy 3 and were rescued from the dark sea by the coast guard, navy, a nearby ferry and local fishermen, said Gov. Jim Hataman of the southern island province of Basilan. Rescuers were still

Hataman said the burned ferry was towed to Basilan’s shoreline, where the bodies of 18 of the 31 victims were discovered in a budget section of the passenger cabin.

“These victims perished on board due to the fire,” Hataman said by telephone. He said more people may have been on the ferry who were not listed on its manifest.

Vatican: Pope improving since hospitalisation with infection

RO ME, MAR 30 (AP): Pope Francis rested well overnight and was “progressively improving” Thursday, the Vatican said, after he was hospitalised with a respiratory infection that has called into question his participation in Palm Sunday and upcoming Holy Week events.

The 86-year-old pontiff, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, ate breakfast, read the newspapers and was working from his hospital room at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, according to a statement from Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni.

“Before lunch he went to the little chapel in the private apartment, where he gathered in prayer and received the Eucharist,” the statement said.

Francis was hospitalised Wednesday after having trouble breathing in recent days and was diagnosed with a respiratory infection that wasn’t COVID-19.

The Vatican said he would remain for a few days of treatment; his audiences were cancelled through Friday.

Despite his absence, the Vatican was abuzz with activity Thursday: Two Vatican offices issued an historic statement repudiating the “Doctrine of Dis-

covery,” the legal theory backed by 15th century papal bulls that legitimised the colonial-era seizure of Native lands and form the basis of some property law today. And there was continued fallout over the sudden resignation of a founding member of the pope’s sex abuse prevention board, with Boston Cardinal Sean O’Malley pushing back against Rev. Hans Zollner’s critiques in his remarkable resignation statement issued the previous day.

The ferry was traveling to Jolo town in Sulu province from the southern port city of Zamboanga when it caught fire off Basilan close to midnight, Hataman said. At least 23 passengers were injured and taken to hospitals.

“Some of the passengers were roused from their sleep due to the commotion caused by the fire. Some jumped off the ship,” Hataman said. The steel-hulled ferry could accommodate up to 430 people and was not overcrowded, Marfe said. According to the manifest, it was carrying 205 passengers and a 35-member crew, he said.

Pro-China demonstrators waving the Chinese flag were out on the streets for President Tsai Ing-wen’s first hours in New York on Wednesday. “Tsai Ing-wen big traitor of China,” the slogan on a sign held by one protester declared.

In a speech Wednesday night to fellow Taiwanese in New York, Tsai thanked the United States for its security assistance and urged Taiwanese unity.

“The safer Taiwan is, the safer the world will be,” she said. She pledged Taiwan would work with its democratic partners to remain on the path of democracy. Tsai arrived in New York on Wednesday and was expected to spend Thursday in closed events in the city. While Taiwan is carefully calibrating Tsai’s

stops in the United States and forgoing official meetings with senior US leaders in Washington in an effort to limit the scale of China’s response. China is focusing on an expected meeting next week between Tsai and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. It would be one of the highest-level in-person sessions for a Taiwanese leader on what that government calls “transits” through the United States. Officials did make not public advance details of Tsai’s schedule for her stops in the United States, under-

scoring the sensitivity of her travel here.

On Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning restated China’s furious objections to any interactions between Tsai and US officials.

“China firmly opposes any form of official interaction between the US and Taiwan,” Mao told reporters at a daily briefing in Beijing. “China will continue to closely follow the situation and resolutely safeguard our sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

A senior Chinese diplomat in Washington,

embassy charge d’affaires

Xu Xueyuan, pointed to the anticipated meeting between Tsai and the US House speaker as one that would have significant repercussions overall and a “serious, serious, serious” impact on US-China relations. Neither Taiwan nor McCarthy, R-Calif., has publicly confirmed any inperson get-together during Tsai’s travel. Analysts have framed a session between the two outside Washington as possibly less provocative than a trip by McCarthy to Taiwan, which he has said he also intends to do.

Beijing responded to a visit by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., last August by launching missiles, deploying warships across the median line of the Taiwan Strait and simulating a blockade of the island. China also temporarily suspended dialogue with the US on climate and other major issues and restricted militaryto-military communication with the Pentagon.

King Charles III addresses German parliament, meets Scholz

BERLIN, MAR 30 (AP):

King Charles III became the first monarch to address Germany’s parliament, the Bundestag, on Thursday as part of a high-profile visit by the U.K. head of state aimed at bolstering ties between the two European powers.

Speaking to lawmakers and other dignitaries in the packed lower house, Charles stressed the close bonds between the United Kingdom and Germany going back centuries, including his own family links to the royal House of Hannover, and the present-day economic, scientific, cultural and military cooperation between the two countries.

Charles noted that London and Berlin have provided considerable aid to Ukraine in its efforts to fend off Russia’s invasion, a point that will appeal to German government of -

“Germany’s decision to provide so much military support to Ukraine is extremely brave, important and welcome,” Charles said. Speaking mostly in fluent German, he noted how the intertwined history of the two nations could be seen in the home of the Bundestag itself.

The restoration in the 1990s of the former Reichstag building, that was heavily damaged during World War II, was capped with a glass cupola designed by British architect Norman Foster intended as a symbol of transparency and accountability.

“From here the citizens can actually watch their politicians work,” Charles said. “Democracy in action.”

Environmental exposure major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases in India: Study

Environmental exposure is a significant risk factor for the occurrence and progression of cardiovascular diseases in adults in India, says a study by the Indian Institute of technology (IIT) Mandi.

The researchers analysed data from over 60,000 people, aged 45 years and above, in both rural and urban India, and the findings suggested that older adults in India are prone to physiological risk followed by genetic, indoor environmental and behavioural risk factors, a statement said on Thursday.

“A majority of the population of India resides in rural areas and uses unclean fuel for

Children exposed to pet cats or indoor dogs during foetal development or early infancy tended to have fewer food allergies compared to other children, according to a study.

The study showed that among children exposed to indoor dogs and cats, there was a significantly reduced incidence of food allergies, though there was no significant difference for children in households with outdoor dogs. Children exposed to indoor dogs were significantly less likely to experience egg, milk, and nut allergies specifically and children exposed to cats were significantly less likely to have egg, wheat, and soybean allergies. The findings are from a study published in the open-access journal

PLOS ONE by Hisao Okabe from the Fukushima Regional Center in Japan.

cooking and other purposes, exposing them to harmful smoke emitted from burning them,” said Ramna Thakur, Associate Professor, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Mandi. Thakur, who conducted the study along

with her team of scholars, said secondhand smoke exposure, commonly referred to as passive smoking, is believed to have similar cardiovascular effects and risks comparable to active smoking.

The study also identified behavioural risk

factors such as physical inactivity leading to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).

The research team utilised data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI), a nationally representative longitudinal survey.

Explaining the basis of the research, Thakur said there are several traditional risk factors for CVDs, including high systolic blood pressure, low HDL cholesterol, obesity, unhealthy food, poor nutritional status, age, family history, physical inactivity, smoking, and alcohol consumption.

Exposure to air pollutants is another significant risk factor, she added. (PTI)

The data used here were self-reported (supplemented by medical record data gathered during the first trimester of pregnancy, at delivery, and at the one-month check-up), so relies on the accurate recall of participants. While the study cannot determine if the link between pet exposure and food allergy incidence is causative, still, it suggests that these results can help guide future research into the mechanisms behind childhood food allergies, the researchers said. Music streaming platform Spotify has said that it is testing a redesign of its user profiles, including a cardstyle layout that allows users to establish more of a social identity on the platform while also providing easy access to its unique features, such as personalised recommendations, Blend playlists, co-listening experience, and more. According to TechCrunch, the changes were first spotted by American blogger Chris Messina, who shared screenshots of the tests on Twitter, mentioning the extra cards on profiles, as well as how the new layout directed users to press a button to “discover more features”.

The company, however, did not commit it would make the feature available for everyone at any particular time. “We routinely conduct a number of tests.

Some of those tests end up informing our user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We don’t have anything further to share at this time,” a company spokesperson was

quoted as saying.

Moreover, the report said, in the revamped user profiles, users will find a new heading at the top of the screen, which appears more like something they’d see on a social network. There’s also a fun feature that will supposedly allow users to set a “vibe” above their name to spice

up their profile.

On the new profiles, users can also find live events, “like” more songs to enhance recommendations, create Blends with friends, check out Spotify’s new audiobooks and more under the “Discover more features” section.

The profiles also include a message at the bottom that says “View more cards”, implying that there will be more additions to this area beyond the playlists and recently played artistes, the report said. (IANS)

However, in the men’s doubles, India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who won the Swiss Open 2023 recently, retired just seven minutes

into their match against the world No. 41 Japanese duo of Ayato Endo and Yuta Takei after an injury to Satwik.

“I just came back from an injury so I wasn’t 100 percent fit for the match so I didn’t want to push it,” Satwiksairaj explained the decision to forfeit the match.

“We had a good last week and we played good matches at the All England Open so we didn’t want to push ourselves too much as we have more important tournaments coming up,” he added.

ranked Jan Louda of Czech Republic. The Indian won an hour-long duel by a 2116, 18-21, 21-12 scoreline. Aakarshi Kashyap, ranked 42nd in women’s singles, stunned Canada’s world No. 15 Michelle Li 12-21, 21-15, 21-18 while Ashmitha Chaliha beat France’s Leonice Huet 2112, 22-20 at the BWF Super 300 event. Malvika Bansod also progressed to the second round of women’s singles while Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George also crossed the first round hurdle in men’s singles.

Among those present in the draw was the All India Football Federation (AIFF) Secretary General, Dr Shaji Prabhakaran. “This season of the IWL is like a qualification competition of a more competitive league that will come into effect in the next campaign,” Dr Prabhakaran said. “My best wishes to all the 16 teams, who will be part of the IWL. We had a meeting with several clubs and all efforts have been made to create a holistic situation for the development and rapid growth of Indian women’s football,” he added. The 2022-23 season of the top women’s meet will see a format having 16 teams split into two groups. The top four teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stage, consisting of quarterfinals, semi-finals and final.

The top eight teams will also get direct slots in next season’s IWL, which will be played on a homeand-away basis.

BALI, MAR 30 (AGENCIES): Fifa has stripped Indonesia of hosting rights for the Under-20 World Cup.

The decision follows the cancellation of the official draw for the tournament, which was due to be held in Bali last Friday, reports BBC Sports. The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) said Fifa was forced to cancel the draw after Bali’s governor Wayan Koster refused to host the Israeli team.

The U20 World Cup is set to take place from 20 May to 11 June. Indonesia does not

have any formal diplomatic ties with Israel and recently protesters have held marches demanding Israel be stopped from competing in the tournament, in support of Palestine. Indonesia were awarded hosting rights in 2019, before Israel qualified for the tournament. England’s U20 team is also set to compete.

“Fifa has decided, due to the current circumstances, to remove Indonesia as the host of the Fifa U20 World Cup 2023,” a Fifa statement said. “A new host will be announced as soon as possible, with the dates of the tournament currently

remaining unchanged. Potential sanctions against the PSSI may also be decided at a later stage.” Half an hour before Fifa’s announcement, PSSI executive committee member Arya Sinulingga said he was “very pessimistic” about Indonesia keeping the hosting rights. “If we make political requirements in sports, it’ll always be like this. We will be exiled from the football ecosystem.

“It’s very tough for all of us. We’re headed into a calamity in sports. We have to separate football or sports and politics.”

Rohit wasn’t afraid to say what he had to say: Anil Kumble

NEW DELHI, MARCH 30 (IANS): Former India captain Anil Kumble, who served as a mentor of Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2013 season, has revealed that the then newly-appointed captain of the team Rohit Sharma was not afraid to say what he had to say, used to reached out to the experience players but took his own decisions.

“He was not afraid to say what he had to say. He had plenty of experience around him and he reached out to them as well but then but took his own decisions. That’s what you want from a captain,” said Kumble on JioCinema’s Insiders Preview show.

The 52-year old Kumble also spoke about Rohit leading a new team in 2017.

“2017 was a new team and the kind of captaincy we saw from him in terms of defending low scores, that’s when your true leadership comes out,” he said.

Meanwhile, former India pacer Zaheer Khan

emphasised on how a captain’s role is the most important.

“The captain’s role is of utmost importance, the way he is thinking and taking decisions in crucial stages in a cool manner and the right decisions, and if it doesn’t go your way, how he is handling the situation. It is a long tournament and

every game’s performance can have an impact in the next game,” Zaheer said.

“Rohit has the ability and personality to absorb pressure very well. The way he communicates in a cool way, not just with players but also in press conferences, I think that is his biggest strength,” he added. Mumbai Indians have

Virat Kohli shares his Class X marksheet

NEW DELHI, MAR 30 ( AGENCIES): Virat Kohli on Thursday took the internet by storm when he shared a glimpse of his Class X marksheet just days before the Indian Premier League season, reports Indian Express.

“It’s funny how the things that add the least to your marksheet, add the most to your character,” Kohli captioned his post on the Koo app.

In the marksheet, Kohli’s scored the highest in English with 83, followed by 81 in social science, 75 in Hindi, 74 in introductory IT, 55 in Science and tech and 51 in Mathematics.

Back in 2018, students appearing for their Class X English state board exam in West Bengal were in for a pleasant surprise when they found an essay question on Kohli. The students were delighted to answer the question on the cricketer who has become a “national icon”.

Kohli who has hit a rich vein of form after ending his century drought in all three formats will be taking the field for the Royal Challengers Bangalore team against the Mumbai Indians on April 2.

Kohli has been one of the stalwarts of the franchise. He has played many match-winning knocks for them. However, his form dipped last season and could only manage 341 runs at a strike rate of 115.99. However, coming into this IPL the batter has been in decent nick in international cricket. “If I am able to get to the level I want to play at and help the team, it will be exciting,” he had said recently.

MiamiOpen:Cirsteareachessemifinal

MIAMI (USA), MARCH

30 (IANS): For the first time in 10 years, Sorana Cirstea will play in the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event after the unseeded Romanian upset No.2 seed and reigning Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals at the Miami Open, here.

In their first career meeting, Cirstea beat Sabalenka 6-4, 6-4 in the last eight on Wednesday night to move into the penultimate round of a tournament of this size for the first time since finishing runner-up to Serena Williams in Toronto in 2013.

It’s been a resurgent tournament for 32-year-old Cirstea in more ways than one, as she hasn’t dropped a set in five victories. She’s also beaten No.5 seed Caro-

line Garcia this week (after beating her in Indian Wells, too) and former Top 20 players Karolina Muchova and Marketa Vondrousova. She took the next step in her second quarterfinal in this Sunshine Double: The 85-minute win over Sabalenka was her first victory over a player ranked

in the Top 2 of the WTA rankings. (She was beaten by World No.1 Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open earlier this month.)

“I think I’m a bit speechless. I came out knowing that it’s going to be a really tough match. Aryna hits so hard, so I knew I had

to hold my ground, and I’m very, very happy with my performance today,” Cirstea was quoted as saying by WTA.

“I guess people like to keep count of the age, the years, the results, but I never do that. I just mind my own business, work hard, do my thing, believe in my game, work with my coach Thomas Johansson -- we just started in December and so far, I think it’s going great.

I’m not defined by numbers.

I’m just trying to keep my head down and work hard,” she added.

For a place in the final, Cirstea will face the winner of the evening quarterfinal between two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, the No.15 seed, and unseeded Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Criticism of Russia return to sport is deplorable: IOC

LAUSSANE, MAR 30

(AGENCIES): Criticism by some European governments of a plan to see a full return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international sport is deplorable and cuts into the autonomy of sport, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said on Thursday, reports BBC Sports.

The IOC on Wednesday issued a set of recommendations for international sports federations that will allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to return since their ban last year following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

This does not include the 2024 Olympics in Paris. A separate decision on that will be taken at a later date.

But governments in Ukraine, Poland and the Czech Republic among others have been angered by the IOC’s plan for Russian and Belarusian athletes to return, saying they have no place in world sport with the war still ongoing.

“It is deplorable to see that some governments do not want to respect

the majority within the Olympic movement and all stakeholders, nor the autonomy of sport,” Bach told a news conference at the end of an executive board meeting.

“It is deplorable that these governments do not address the question of double standards. We have not seen a single comment on their attitude on the participation of athletes from countries of the other 70 wars and armed conflict around the world.”

Athletes from Russia and Belarus, Moscow’s ally, were banned from most international competitions last year following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which

Moscow calls a ‘special military operation’.

The Lausanne-based IOC’s latest guidelines to allow for their return to world sport cite human rights concerns for Russian athletes and the current participation of Russians and Belarusians in some sports as reasons for the decision.

“Government interventions have strengthened the unity of the Olympic movement,” Bach said. “It cannot be up to the governments to decide which athletes can participate in which competition. This would be the end of world sport as we know it today,” he added.

Hope glitz of IPL will not erase India’s ODI series loss to Australia: Gavaskar

MUMBAI, MAR 30

(IANS): Legendary India

batter Sunil Gavaskar hopes that the glitz and glamour of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will not erase the memory of India losing the ODI series to Australia 2-1 earlier this month.

On the road to preparing for the ODI World Cup, to be held later in October-November at home, India have won the ODI series opener in Mumbai by five wickets. But they lost the next two ODIs in Visakhapatnam and Chennai by ten wickets and 21 runs respectively, to lose a bilateral 50-over series at home after four years. “India losing a oneday series at home after four years should have made headlines. That it didn’t was because everybody’s attention was on the soonto-commence Indian Premier League.”

“Maybe not everybody because the support staff of the Indian team -- coach

Rahul Dravid and his colleagues, who cannot be linked with any IPL franchise -- will have the whole of the IPL to look at the areas that need improvement.”

“The glitz and glamour of the finest T20 league in the world, it is hoped, will not erase the memory of the series loss. The loss should rankle and make the players motivated to get their back on the opposition again,” wrote Gavaskar in his column for Sportstar on Thursday.

Gavaskar, a member of India’s 1983 ODI World Cup-winning team, also pointed out India’s recent batting collapses

(IANS): The International Chess Federation (FIDE) on Wednesday announced the launch dates and format of Global Chess League (GCL). The 12-day GCL will begin from June 21July 2. GCL will be played in ten round-robin matches, with six teams competing (six players in each team), followed by a final match between the top two teams. GCL is the world’s first and largest official franchise league of its kind, with chess players competing in a unique joint team format. GCL will feature male and female chess champions competing on the same team. The league’s joint male-female teams will have the rare distinction of being the only joint team in a professional sports league.

FIDE president, Arkady Dvorkovich, said, “We are very excited to announce the dates and format of this one-of-a-kind GCL with Tech Mahindra.

As a partner, Tech Mahindra brings in its tech expertise to help scale and take the game to millions of fans. The league will help increase Chess’s popularity while expanding commercial opportunities. As a part of FIDE’s commitment to

in international cricket as a cause of concern. At Mumbai, K.L. Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja took India home in a chase of 189 after being 83/5 at one point.

After being shot out for 117 in Visakhapatnam, India were on track to chasing 270 on a slow Chennai pitch. But dismissals of Rahul, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar in quick succession meant India were bundled out for 248 in 49.1 overs to lose the ODI series decider.

“What the loss showed was that the batting certainly needs to be looked at. If anything, Indian batting isn’t as reliable as earlier. The bowling has come on very well, and fielding overall has improved too.”

“There are far too many batting collapses in all formats of the game, and that is a cause for concern. The openers lay down the foundation, but this is where the team has struggled in recent times.”

growing women’s chess, this league will also witness the joint male and female team format, a first-of-itskind in a professional sport. We invite team owners and sponsors to join in the effort to bring chess closer to its fans around the world. We are looking forward to meeting the teams and new talent in June 2023.”

GCL will aim to bring sports fans together to witness chess in a neverseen-before avatar. The winning team will get crowned with the title of World Champion Franchise Team.

Viswanathan Anand, five-time world chess champion and Indian chess legend, said, “Chess is a game that millions of people all over the world enjoy playing. We’ve seen a surge in new fan engagements since the pandemic, increasing the fan base. It is indeed a momentous occasion for the world of chess to stage a Global Chess League with players participating worldwide.

I am confident that the league will bring a new perspective to chess and chess viewership. Looking forward to collaborating with FIDE and Tech Mahindra to make the 12day GCL a huge success.”

The 16 teams were divided into four groups with the top two teams from each group progressing to the knockout stages, which consist of the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final.

India have been drawn against three-time winners Japan, Vietnam and Uzbekistan in Group D of the tournament.

IPL beckons for NE as Guwahati gears up for 2 matches

GUWAHATI, MAR 30 (PTI): The Northeast is all set to debut as an Indian Premier League (IPL) host for the first time since the marquee tournament started, with two Rajasthan Royals’ ‘home’ games scheduled in Assam’s Guwahati next month.

NEW DELHI, MAR 30 (IANS): Durham have signed Australia’s leftarm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann for their upcoming County Championship season. Kuhnemann’s arrival to Durham comes as a replacement for his countrymate, off-spinner Todd Murphy. Durham said in an official statement that it had initially engaged with Murphy for the 2023 County Championship season, but he was deemed unavailable for the first block of County Championship matches. Depending on clearance from Cricket Australia, the club added that they are still hopeful Murphy will join the Club following the Ashes.

The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Stadium has been designated as one of the ‘home’ venues for RR, which will take on the Punjab Kings on April 5 and Delhi Capitals on April 8.

“We were allotted two IPL matches of RR in 2020. But, the matches couldn’t happen due to the outbreak of COVID-19. We are happy two games have been scheduled here this year,” ACA secretary Tridib Konwar told PTI.

He said preparations are in full swing, and ACA is working in close coordination with the Rajasthan Royals team.

“We urge the cricket lovers of Assam as well as the entire Northeast to come and watch the matches. Rajasthan Royals has already started online

World’s third largest cricket stadium to come up in Jaipur

JAIPUR, MAR 30 (IANS):

Vedanta’s Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) has signed an MoU with the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) for the development of the world’s third largest cricket stadium in Chonp village in Jaipur.

Vedanta’s HZL will spend Rs 300 crore on the stadium, one of the largest corporate investments in India’s sports infrastructure.

The international stadium will be named after Anil Agarwal, the founder and chairman of Vedanta Resources Limited.

To be spread over 100 acres of land with a seating capacity of 75,000 people, it will be the third largest stadium in the world after the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.

The MoU was signed by Bhawani Shankar Samota, Secretary, Rajasthan Cricket Association, and Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, in the presence of C.P. Joshi, Speaker, Rajasthan Assembly, and Chief Patron, RCA; Priya Agarwal Hebbar,

Chairperson, Hindustan Zinc and Non-Executive Director, Vedanta Ltd; and Vaibhav Gehlot, President, RCA. The stadium facilities will be spread across 100 acres and have a seating capacity of over 75,000. In terms of the size of the playing field area this stadium would be the largest in the world.

On this occasion, Joshi expressed happiness at the generous offer from HZL and signing of the MOU. He said that this would accomplish the long felt dream of construction of a modern International Cricket Stadium at Jaipur.

He thanked Anil Agarwal and Priya Agarwal Hebbar for their support and MOU for 1st Phase of Stadium. He hoped the 2nd Phase of the stadium would also be supported by Vedanta. The new stadium would develop the talent of new players. He also hoped that Vedanta would help young entrepreneurs to come up in Rajasthan. Vaibhav Gehlot highlighted the history and achievement of RCA. He hoped that similar support would be forthcoming for the construction work of the second phase and also thanked the State

Government for allotting 100 acres of land for the stadium at concessional rates.

Former Sri Lanka cricketer Kumar Sangakkara, Head Coach of Rajasthan Royals, expressed happiness at the construction of the proposed stadium. He hoped that this venture would give encouragement to the new talent.

Vedanta Chairman, Anil Agarwal, shared his vision for this contribution, “Sport gives us the best life lessons in leadership, teamwork, competition and hunger to succeed. If

India’s youth participates wholeheartedly with energy and passion, nurtured by world class infrastructure, they will become an unbeatable talent pool. Vedanta dedicates this stadium and its facilities to new India. Let’s play.”

Speaking on the occasion, Priya Agarwal Hebbar said, “Cricket is a national passion. We are proud and privileged to have the opportunity to set up this world-class facility which will benefit players and spectators.

India has huge potential as a sporting nation. Vedanta and HZL are committed to creating a best-in-class enabling environment for the flourishing of our country’s talent and interest in sports.”

The stadium will be completed in phases. A 40,000 capacity is set to be completed by October, 2023. The overall project of first phase will cost Rs. 400 crores, out of which Rs. 300 crores will be borne by Hindustan Zinc Limited and the remaining amount of Rs. 100 crores will be taken care by RCA.

ticketing for the games,” Konwar said.

The Jaipur-based franchise had earlier partnered with the association for a cricket academy, which is now functional at the ACA Stadium.

Devajit Saikia, joint secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said there are a lot of aspiring cricketers who cannot make it to the national side due to tough competition, and the IPL is a good opportunity for them.

All eyes will be on local boy Riyan Parag, who plays

for the Rajasthan Royals, during the two matches at Guwahati.

Budding cricketers

Rohit and Kamal, who are a regular at one the academies in Guwahati, said they cannot contain their excitement to watch their Riyan ‘da’ (elder brother) in action.

“We are happy that the IPL is finally happening here. It is the biggest tournament for us,” Kamal said.

“The Rajasthan Royals will be facing tough teams with star players. But, we are confident they will win and our Riyan ‘da’ will perform

well,” added Rohit. Roshan Basfor, who plays cricket along with Rohit and Kamal, hoped that organising the two IPL matches at Guwahati will make a case for the stadium to host matches of the 50over World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in India later this year.

“Guwahati has already made it to the long list of probable World Cup venues. We have seen a good wicket here in previous international matches, and are hopeful that the stadium will get a chance to host World Cup games,” Basfor said.

Formula 2: India’s Jehan Daruvala eyes double-podium repeat in Melbourne

MUMBAI, MAR 30 (IANS): Indian racer Jehan

Daruvala will be hoping to conjure up some Melbourne magic and score a repeat of his Jeddah double podium as the Formula 2 championship heads to Australia for some weekend action.

The 24-year-old, who races for Dutch team MP Motorsport, was the only driver to finish both races of the Jeddah round in the top three and will be hoping to repeat the Jeddah story as the F2 Championships heads to the historic Albert Park circuit for the newest fixture on the calendar.

The podium reignited Daruvala’s championship hopes, propelling him to fifth in the overall standings and the young Indian will be looking to build further momentum behind his title tilt at the lakeside street track this weekend.

“I am really looking forward to racing at the Albert Park circuit. It’s a historic and challenging track and it’s great to see it

join the F2 calendar. None of us have ever raced around here before so the learning curve will be incredibly steep. Nevertheless, it’s going to be the same for everyone,” said Daruvala.

“For our part, we’ve just focused on ourselves and prepared the best we can. Variable weather, with rain expected on Friday and Saturday, will add an extra element of unpredictability and excitement to the mix.

But we finally showed our hand in terms of pace in Jeddah and I’m confident we can be quick here again

this weekend,” Daruvala said.

The 5.2-km long Albert Park circuit in the heart of Melbourne predominantly comprises medium-speed corners, fast straights and a handful of tight, twisting turns.

The track layout, which has hosted Formula One since 1996, was tweaked last year to aid overtaking. Formula 2, as a support series to Formula One, will race around that same layout, which will also feature four DRS zones to further improve overtaking.
