IMPHAL, MAY 28 (PTI/ AGENCIES): Days ahead of Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the violencehit Manipur, fresh violence erupted in several parts of State. Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Sunday said nearly 40 armed militants involved in torching houses and firing at civilians have been killed by security forces since they began an operation to bring peace and normalcy in the State.

Meanwhile, police officials on Sunday said at least two persons were killed and 12 injured in different instances of firing upon civilians and clashes between militants and security forces since the early hours of Sunday. At Phayeng in Imphal West district, one person died and another sustained bullet injuries after being fired at by suspected militants, police officials said.

He said many militants involved in killing civilians and destroying property and torching houses have been captured by the Jat regiment. Singh said 38 vulnerable areas have been identified and that the state police has been conducting

operations there.

The house of BJP MLA Khwairakpam Raghumani Singh at Uripok in Imphal West was vandalised and his two vehicles were set on fire, a top security official told PTI. He said that clashes broke out in the early hours of the morning at several places both between rival ethnic militant groups as well as between militants and security forces.

“According to our information, firing incidents were reported from Sugnu in Kakching, Kangvi in Churachandpur, Kangchup in

Imphal West, Sagolmang in Imphal East, Nungoipokpi in Bishenpur, Khurkhul in Imphal West and YKPI in Kangpokpi,” the official said. New roadblocks have also sprung up in areas manned by women.

There were also an unconfirmed report of arms being looted from Kakching police station by a Meitei group, the official told PTI. At Napat, Serou and nearby Sugnu in Kakching district militants burnt down some 80 houses prompting villagers to flee in midnight hours. State police personnel deployed in the area retaliated leading to heavy exchange of fire, police said.

One police personnel was killed and another injured at Sugnu in the firing.

Violence in the last 10 hours has also prompted district authorities to shorten the 11-hour curfew relaxation period in Imphal East and West district to just six and half hours.

NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (AGENCIES/PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday unveiled the new Parliament building describing it as a “symbol of aspirations, hopes and dreams” of 140 crore people in an event that started with the installation of a now-contentious ‘Sengol’ and amid a boycott by some Opposition parties.

In a speech delivered from the grand and cavern-

ous Lok Sabha hall decorated in peacock motif, Modi said the ultra-modern complex was the “need of the hour” in view of the expected increase in the number of members of Parliament.

Some moments in the developmental journey of a nation get immortalised, today is one such day, he said amid repeated thumping of desks by the audience.

“More than just a build-

ing, the new Parliament encompasses the aspirations and dreams of 1.4 billion people. It sends a powerful message to the world about India’s unwavering determination,” he said and hailed the country’s democratic ethos.

Modi inaugurated the new building at a grand ceremony which included a havan, a multi-faith prayer ceremony and the installation of the Sengol in a special enclosure in the Lok Sabha chamber.

In his speech, Modi said that as India develops, the world progresses. He asserted that this new Parliament building will give a call for the development of the world as well. He also talked about the ‘Sengol’, saying that it was a symbol of power transfer from the British and had now been given the respect it deserves.

Naga Club says tenants given prior NPF, NSCN (I-M), student unions and GNF flay vandalism of NSF office notice before building demolition

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 8 (NPN): In the aftermath of demolition of office of NSF at Naga Club (NC) building, president NC Kuolachalie Seyie and secretary K. Gwanilo Himb admitted that the Club had entrusted some youths to carry out the demolition since the tenants had refused to vacate the premises despite notices issued.

NC termed the FIR lodged by NSF with O.C.incharge North PS as ‘vexatious’ since the question of vandalizing public property

or criminal trespass by unknown miscreants as alleged by the NSF did not arise.

NC said its members were not miscreants, but bonafide owner of the land and building. Instead, NSF was the “unlawful” and forced occupant of the Naga Club Building since eviction notices had been issued, it said.

NC also pointed out that some empty houses and rooms were demolished about three weeks ago after the occupants vacated the building.

It pointed out that vacation notice was also served on the remaining shops and establishments, besides informing them in person, but they refused to vacate.

In this regard, NC said that the FIR filed by the NSF was “malicious, baseless, misconceived and misleading”. Further the club said the present case between the NSF and the Naga Club was a civil issue, competent to be tried and decided by a civil court.

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 8 (NPN): Naga People’s Front (NPF), NSCN (I-M), Government colleges student bodies and Global Naga Forum (GNF) have condemned the act of vandalism of Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) office on May 27 by unknown miscreants.

In a press note, NPF press bureau said it strongly condemned such act of uncivilized and alien culture practised by the Naga society.

“Whoever, the culprits maybe, but destroying one of our most preserved heritage building is nothing but

purely a barbaric plan,” NPF stated.

NPF therefore, urged upon the law enforcing agency to come into conclusion immediately by booking the culprits as per the law of the land.

NSCN (I-M): NSCN (I-M) said that such act of insanity of vandalizing the Naga Club heritage building that house the NSF office was beyond comprehension and has shaken the consciousness of all right thinking Nagas.

NSCN (I-M) said that it was an insult of the highest degree not only to NSF,

the apex body of Naga students units spread across Nagalim but also to the identity of Naga freedom movement.

“Naga Club building has been standing as a ‘historical memory’ to reminds us of our national identity when the Naga political movement for freedom started,” it stated.

NSCN appealed to the law enforcing agency to act with all seriousness to identify the culprits.

The meeting further resolved to impress upon the Education department to count GTs seniority with effect from the date of appointment or date of joining with equal treatment for the benefit of Modified Assured Career Progression Scheme (MACPS).

The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) will hold a sit-in protest in front of its demolished office premises here from 9 a.m. on Monday after expiry of 24-hour ultimatum served by the student body on the State government to nab the culprits responsible for vandalising its office building on wee hours of Saturday.

Addressing media persons in front of the vandalised office, NSF president Kegwayhun Tep said the decision to hold the sit-in protest was taken at a meeting on Sunday evening.

Speaking to this reporter here on Saturday, a shopkeeper in Naga Arcade also complained that the market has turned into an unhygienic place and that the unhygienic environment was a daily hazard not only to shop keepers but also shoppers.

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 8 (NPN): Nagaland Governor La Ganesan on Sunday expressed hoped that the bond of friendship between the Gorkha community of Nagaland and the Nagas would grow stronger and remain steadfast.

He said this while speaking at the reception organised by the Gorkha Public Panchayat, Kohima (GPPK) Kohima in his honour. Ganesan said he expected that the two communities would always remain good citizens and continue to contribute towards nation building.

He further mentioned that the state government, in acknowledgment of their immense contribution to the State, had declared the

Gorkha community of Nagaland as indigenous nonNaga local residents, He said that the Gorkhas of Kohima had a history of sacrifice for the nation, noting that settlers from the community in Nagaland, especially in Kohima and in Angami region, seemed to be almost two centuries old. He said their forefathers might have come after the advent of the British or they might have been brought for various purpose like recruitment as armed personnel in different forces.

Ganesan remarked that the Gorkhas being hill people might have been chosen for their suitability to the climatic condition of the region as well as for the common features they shared

with the Naga people.

He observed that their food habits, traditional rituals, simplicity, bravery, modesty, honesty, trustworthiness, faithfulness and hardworking nature were almost similar to the Nagas. He mentioned that the adaptability and the determination of Gorkha people helped them become an integral part of the Naga society, towards which they had contributed immensely.

He said prior to World War-II, Kohima being the headquarters of then Naga Hills, most people from the community were engaged here. And the Gorkhas being an amenable lot with an affable nature, he pointed out that they had automatically started mingling with the na-

tives of different neighbouring villages and khels, thus establishing a strong bond.

Ganesan mentioned that such relationships helped the Gorkhas settle down in different parts of Kohima during that period.

He said when the Gorkha community grew into a sizeable number, the British government established two Gorkha villages – Chandmari and Aradhura – with the consent of the neighbouring villages and khels.

He noted that though majority of the Gorkha settlements were concentrated in these two villages, with the expansion of township and municipality, the areas converted into colonies though called by the same nomenclature.

The governor also visited Gorkha Singhadevi Mandir and offered prayers and assured that he would extend help to the community in renovating the temple. He also saw the photos displayed by the organiser. Kohima town 9-A/C legislator Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, who was also present on the occasion, thanked the community for their contribution to the State Capital and urged them to put forward their problems and grievances, if any, to the governor for further discussion with the State government.

In his speech, GPPK’s former adviser Ranjit Lama highlighted the genesis of Gorkhas in Kohima.

Leaders of Tsütuonuomia council as guardians of Chandmari Nepali community were also present on the occasion. GPPK president Santu Thapa delivered the welcome address while former advisor of GPPK Ranjit Lama shared about the genesis of Gorkhas of Kohima. Gorkha Students Union vice president Jenny Lamechane Chettri chaired the programme while Vivela Club Kohima presented a patriotic song and vote of thanks delivered by GPPK general secretary Suresh Kumar Lama.

DIMAPUR: Three class-9 students of Little Garden School (LGS) Tuli namely Limsen Imsong, Senkatula Jamir and Shityben Lkr attended a two-week “Young Scientist Programme” also known as “YUva VIgyani KAryakram (YUVIKA)” organised by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on May 15-26 at the North-East Space Applications Centre, Umiam, Meghalaya.

DIMAPUR, MAY 28(NPN): A motorcyle rider died while the pillion rider sustained serious injuries when the two wheeler reportedly rammed on a dumper truck.

Police sources said the bike with the two riders rammed on to another dumper on a sharp turning before Dhansiri bridge. The bike rider died on the spot while the pillion rider was rushed to nearby Zion hospital with head injury. The driver and helper of the truck were arrested and the vehicles seized.

Sophia said governments, decision-makers, and educators must take menstrual hygiene and education more seriously and stressed on the need for state-wide sensitization and menstrual awareness.

DIMAPUR: A “District No Tobacco Club” under the motto, “Rejuvenation” was launched on May 27 at Cornerstone Higher Secondary School, Immanuel Higher Secondary School and Olympic Higher Secondary School under Zunheboto district.

DIMAPUR: One day awareness training on People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) and the process of its verification was organised by Nagaland State Biodiversity Board (NSBB) on May 26 at Kohima.

A press release by NSBB informed that the programme was part of the national celebration of “International Day for Biodiversity 2023”, for which Union Minister of State for environment launched the national

campaign on up-dation cum verification of PBR on May 23.

The training in Kohima was attended by college/university students from life sciences background and the members of Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) from different villages.

Subsequent to the training, 21 student participants were assigned several villages to carry out the PBR up-dation cum verification activity on May 27. NSBB said at least 40 PBR verification process would be completed by June 4, 2023. All together 48 participants attended the training.

Modi to flag off NE’s first Eviction drive in Orang National Park PM Vande Bharat Express today

TEZPUR (ASSAM), MAY 28 (PTI): A fourday-long eviction drive to clear an “encroached” animal corridor in Assam’s Orang National Park was launched by the government on Sunday amid heavy security, a senior official said.

The operation will be carried out in Sonitpur district for the first two days while the exercise will be conducted for the remaining two days in Darrang district.

The Orang National Park is spread over an area of 89 sq km in Sonitpur and Darrang districts and the eviction exercise is being carried out to clear “encroached” land for an animal corridor to Kaziranga National Park.

Sonitpur deputy commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra said all the areas to be covered by the eviction drive are ‘char’ (riverine) areas in the district.

“Eviction drive was carried out in five char areas today and it will be done in another four such spots on Monday. The drive went off smoothly

Nearly 800 families were residing in the encroached land and the majority of them had already cleared the area, the official said.

Over 13,000 acre in the National Park is targeted to be cleared during the operation, of which more

than 6,800 acre are in Sonitpur. The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led dispensation in the state has been carrying out eviction exercises in the state after assuming power in May 2021.

In one of the largest eviction drives in Assam, the administration in a three-day exercise from

February 14 cleared 2,099 hectare in Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary and nearby revenue villages in Sonitpur district, affecting almost 12,800 people.

On February 15, in Digboi of Tinsukia district in upper Assam, security personnel resorted to lathi charge when alleged en-

croachers of railway land pelted stones to prevent an eviction drive there.

On the same day, the Barpeta district administration carried out an eviction drive in Bhabanipur area to clear nearly 300 hectare belonging to Gopal Dev Aata Satra (Vaishnavite monastery). In Pava Reserve Forest under Lakhimpur district, the administration started an eviction drive to clear 450 hectare of encroached land on January 10, which continued for several days, displacing around 500 families of “illegal settlers”.

The drive in Nagoan’s Batadrava on December 19 was billed as one of the largest in the region as it uprooted more than 5,000 alleged encroachers.

It was followed by another exercise on December 26 to clear 400 bighas in Barpeta.

Setting aside opposition criticism, the chief minister had on December 21 last year told the state Assembly that eviction drives to clear government and forest lands in Assam would continue as long as the BJP is in power.

Vande Bharat at Guwahati GUWAHATI, MAY 28 (PTI): The first Vande Bharat Express connecting North East region will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.

The train will be flagged off virtually by Modi at 12 noon when it commences its journey from Guwahati railway station, an official release said here on Sunday.

Connecting Guwahati with New Jalpaiguri, the train will help save about an hour of journey time, when compared with the

current fastest train connecting the two places. Vande Bharat Express will cover the journey in 5 hours 30 minutes, while the current fastest train takes 6 hours 30 minutes to cover the same journey. The state-of-the-art Vande Bharat Express will provide people of the region the means to travel with speed and comfort and also boost tourism in the region, the release said.

The prime minister will also dedicate a 182 km route of newly electrified section.

This will help provide

pollution-free transportation with trains running at higher speeds and reduced running time of trains.

It will also open the doors for trains running on electric traction to enter Meghalaya, the release said.

Modi will also inaugurate a newly constructed DEMU/MEMU shed at Lumding in Assam.

This new facility will be helpful for maintaining DEMU rakes operating in this region, leading to better operational feasibility, the release added.

Two hurt as Manipur MLA’s Museum documenting traditional sports of Assam son fire gunshots at crowd

IMPHAL, MAY 28: A mob on Sunday ransacked the house of an MLA of the ruling BJP in Manipur after two persons were injured in a firing by the son of the MLA. The irate mob also torched the private office of the MLA as well as some vehicles parked nearby.

The gun firing incident occurred when a group of people, including women of Uripok Assembly Constituency in Imphal West district, went to submit a memorandum to the local MLA Kh Raghumani Singh at his residence at Uripok Sorbon Thingel today, around noon.

When the people converged at the gate of the MLA, his son Kh Sushil opened fire toward them injuring two persons.

The injured persons were immediately rushed

to RIMS hospital. One of the injured was later shifted to Raj Medicity hospital at North AOC after his condition became critical.

Following the firing, a large number of people thronged the residence of the MLA and set fire the private office of the MLA. They also smashed a Gypsy (used by the security escorts of the MLA) and a Scorpio vehicle of the MLA before setting fire the vehicles on fire.

The mob was, however, controlled by a strong team of Imphal West district police. The police also called out fire tenders to douse the blaze before it spread to adjacent houses.

As narrated by a woman leader, as done in other Assembly constituencies, they went to the residence of the MLA to submit a memorandum in connection with the current turmoil situation of the state.

In the memorandum, they explained what the people of the constituency wanted to appraise the Union home minister AmiT Shah when he visit the state to take stock of the current chain of violence.

However, on seeing the people approaching, the security guard of the MLA closed the gate after which some youths among them knocked at the gate insisting them to open it and allow them to submit the memorandum.

When the people in the lead tried to forcibly open the gate, the son of the MLA opened fire some rounds toward them, injuring two of them, she narrated.

“We strongly condemn the act of the MLA. Raghumani is unworthy of being a representative of the people. He must resign as an MLA on moral ground,” she demanded.

GUWAHATI, MAY 28 (PTI): ‘Nao-khel’, ‘Alang Dalang’, ‘Koni juj’, ‘Moh juj’, and ‘Khomlainai’ are words that may seem unfamiliar to many but these are among 600 games traditionally played in Assam since yore which an ardent sports enthusiast has attempted to document by setting up a museum here.

Assam’s rich heritage of traditional sports since the days of the Ahom rulers may have waned over the centuries due to varied reasons but Chiranjib Sarma has taken the onus to revive these games and sporting activities. ‘‘The first step in this direction is the setting up of the Olympia Traditional Sports Museum here which showcases the various traditional sporting activities practised by the indigenous people of the state’’, Sarma told PTI. to the advent of modern sports and more due to the emergence of online gaming apps. The traditional games are now played only during certain festivals, the former sports journalist said. ‘‘The idea for setting up a museum came while I was researching for my book on traditional indigenous sports which has not been given the importance it de-

serves and I have published six books on the topic’’, he said.

During his research, Sarma found that there was not much information about these sporting activities. ‘‘I travelled far and wide to collect details on how the games were played, the rules and the equipment used for each game. ‘‘Many people helped

me in the project and we decided not to keep the information confined to books but set up a museum where the details of the games, particularly those played by the tribal communities, will be on display in various forms’’, Sarma said.

Information relating to over 600 sports and games traditionally played in the state by men, women and children was collected by him. The Museum, a first of its kind in the North East by an individual, showcases through illustrations, photographs and books the way the various games are played along with the equipment used in the games.

Assam’s indigenous wrestling, boat race, buffalo, cock and bird fights, bamboo stilt walking, butterfly catching, ‘tekeli bhonga khel’, bow and arrows along are some of the games that are still practised mostly in rural areas during certain festivals, including the state’s spring festival ‘Rongali Bihu’’, he pointed

out.

The Museum is the first step towards preserving Assam’s sports history but Sarma and his team is also planning to revive these sporting activities and motivate children and youth to play these games. ‘‘We have already initiated the process of setting up small centres in different parts of the state to promote our traditional sports. The students will stay there, receive education in nearby schools as well as training in selected sports’’, he added.

A senior official of the Museum, Uday Borgohain, said that earlier, sports was an extra-curricular activity and not a compulsory subject in the school syllabus. ‘‘There have been changes in the attitude of educational institutions as well as parents who want their children to pursue sports as a career. We want them to give equal attention to both traditional and modern sporting events’’, he said.

Infighting in dist units: Assam Over 3,300 appear for UPSC prelims in Imphal Assam principal held for allegedly sexually assaulting minor BJP President warns of action

GUWAHATI, MAY 28 (IANS): Assam BJP has been witnessing infighting in several district units over the last few days. At least in four district committees, a section of leaders has revolted against the local leaders.

In Goalpara, seven block-level leaders of the BJP complained to the party president in Assam, Bhabesh Kalita, for the removal of district president Brighu Ranjan Rabha.

A similar situation has also surfaced in Bongaigaon, Nalbari, and Jorhat districts.

This has caused a degree of displeasure among the top party leaders in the state. As the Lok Sabha elections are to be held within a year, the BJP is eyeing to win at least 12 out of 14 seats in Assam.

BJP leaders are very much aware of the fact that the party must do well in Assam to have a commendable position in the northeast after the Lok Sabha polls. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has set a target of winning 12 seats. The party has even started gearing up for the polls, and a few preparatory meetings were held in Guwahati.

At this juncture, the news of infighting is a cause of concern for the party.

Bhabesh Kalita “In the BJP, we all have to abide by the disciplines of the party. The district leaders should learn how the party leadership maintains good equations.

We cannot accept indiscipline within the party. If needed, strong actions will be taken against a section of leaders,” Kalita said.

A few days ago, a closed-door party meeting was held in the BJP’s Jorhat district office, and some of the local leaders made the discussion public.

This has irked the top party leaders in the state.

Kalita stated, “The matters that were discussed in a closed-door meeting can not be made public.

This is our party’s system.

We have sent show-cause notices to the persons involved in this incident.”

However, apart from these four districts, friction is happening in other district units of the party as well.

IMPHAL, MAY 28 (PTI): Overcoming all the challenges arising out of the ethnic violence in Manipur, more than 3,300 candidates on Sunday appeared for the UPSC preliminary examinations at 12 designated centres here, an official said.

No untoward incident has been reported in the state capital since this morning, police said.

“Altogether, 4,051 candidates had registered for UPSC preliminary tests at 12 sub-centres in Imphal.

However, due to the ongoing violence, 700 had opted to appear for the exam at centres outside the state” an official of the Manipur Public Service Commission said.

one of the most important stages for aspiring civil servants in the country, was affected to some extent due to the suspension of the internet.

“Our pre parations were affected to some extent in the last 25 days due to the suspension of the internet as our tutors and instructors could not share study notes with us. However, we have come here to appear for the exam without any disturbance.”

During this month, ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kukis in Manipur claimed the lives of over 70 people, and 10,000 security forces were deployed even as a curfew was imposed and internet services were suspended.

Assam BJP slams Borah’s ‘trouble engine’ govt remark GUWAHATI, MAY 28 (IANS): Following Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah’s cryptic dig at the state government, terming it a “trouble engine,” the BJP sharply reacted to it.

The state BJP leaders said that unlike the previous Congress governments in Assam, the current dispensation led by Himanta Biswa Sarma does not have to rely on the Centre’s fund for paying even the salaries of state government employees.

Debajit Mahanta, an Assam BJP leader, said, “Since India’s Independence, Assam was ruled by the Congress for a number of years, but only after the BJP came to power here, the state government is no longer depen-

dent on funds from the Centre to pay the salaries of its 4.5 lakh employees.”

“Perhaps Borah made the comments because he was unaware of the most recent events in the state,” he said. He alleged that the recruited youths had to pay money as soon as they received the appointment letters when Congress was ruling Assam, but now that the BJP is in power, the youths received jobs on the basis of merit. The state government has recently distributed appointment letters to nearly 45,000 youths who have been selected to serve in various departments.

Borah earlier said that people had to give bribes to get jobs; however,

nobody is telling the truth now out of the BJP’s fear. “I request the Assam Congress president to show a single candidate who got the jobs by giving bribes,” Mahanta said.

He also warned Borah not to make any irrational claims in the future. The BJP leader claimed that several Congress employees had also gotten appointment letters in the most recent round of recruitment examinations, in addition to the newly hired employees. Speaking further in response to Borah’s remarks about borrowing loans to create a fictitious GDP, Mahanta claimed that the debt in states with Congress-led governments is significantly lower.

GUWAHATI, MAY 28 (IANS): A school teacher in Assam’s Karimganj district has been arrested after a complaint was lodged against him on the charges of sexually assaulting a minor girl in the school premises, police said on Sunday.

On May 18, an FIR was filed at the Badarpur Police Station in the district against Bhanga Higher Secondary school’s head teacher Asar Uddin, alleging that he had called a student into his room and had sexually abused her.

Police issued an arrest warrant after filing a complaint against him under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). Asar Uddin, however, fled the scene following the event. A number of social organisations organised demonstrations against the incident and called for Asar Uddin’s immediate arrest. He was located in the Nilambazar area on Saturday night

by Karimganj police, who then brought him before the court.

Asar Uddin was hiding in a house there, according to Karimganj’s Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das, adding that police got the information about his hide-out on Saturday.

“Our team carefully planned an operation and

caught him from that house based on the exact information. He has been brought before the court by us. Those who assisted him in hiding are suspected, and we are looking into the situation more deeply,” Das added.

Asar Uddin was last week removed from his position by the Secondary Education Department of Assam and advised to assist the police with their investigation.

NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (PTI): The inauguration of the new Parliament building on Sunday was marked with a boycott by 21 opposition parties which accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of treating the event like his “coronation”, and said democracy is run by people not by buildings.

The opposition leaders also accused the government of violating Constitutional nor ms by not inviting President Droupadi Murmu to the event. They said when the inauguration ceremony was underway, protesting wrestlers, who have accused a BJP MP of sexual harassment, were removed from Jantar Mantar as they sought to march towards the new Parliament House.

The government has rejected the opposition argument, saying no protocol were violated and that Modi respects the President.

The Congress claimed the new Parliament was inaugurated in a grand fashion by a “self-glorifying authoritarian PM with utter disdain for Parliamentary procedures”.

KANNUR, MAY 28 (PTI): Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday lashed out at the BJP-ruled central government over its decision to cut down the borrowing limit of the state by half by terming the move as “sadistic”.

Vijayan said while the central government jumps at every opportunity to fill its coffers, like implementing G S T, i t wa s t a k i n g a “negative approach” when it came to helping the state progress.

Vijayan said the stand taken by Centre was another crisis being heaped upon a

At the same time he also indirectly criticised the Cong ress-led UDF opposition in the state for allegedly remaining silent over the Centre’s decisions which were not beneficial for the state.

“But despite all this, some people are not ready to respond to this,” the CM said while speaking at an event held at the Pinarayi Convention Center here.

H oweve r, t h e C M made it clear that as long as the Left government was in power in the state, there would be no denial of benefits to the workers and the poor.

O n S a t u r d ay, t h e ruling-CPI(M) had termed the Centre’s move to cut the borrowing capacity of Kerala as an “attempt to suffocate the state” by any means necessary.

The Left party had said that the central government had earlier given permission to borrow Rs 32,442 crore but the limit has now been reduced to Rs 15,390 crore.

Aurangabad, Sushil Kumar Singh, who attended the inauguration of the new Parliament building, said, the tweet put out by the RJD was “in poor taste”.

“What do you expect from this par ty (RJD) which is now a partner of the JD(U) in the Bihar government. Those who are making this odious comparison with a coffin, their politics will be sealed in a coffin,” he told reporters in Delhi.

Caught in a bind

I

t has been around four years since the government of Nagaland extended the Inner Line Permit to entire Dimapur (including newly carved districts of Chümoukedima and Niuland) on December 10,2019 but which has remained unimplemented for various reasons. It may be noted that when Nagaland was created as a tribal state on December 1,1963 with continuation of the ILP,somehow then Dimapur sub division was excluded from the purview since it was not defined as a ‘tribal area’. Some NGOs have rightly maintained that when the entire Nagaland itself is a tribal state and tribal area, there is no need for another Tribal belt or Compact area to be curved out of the existing tribal area.For unknown reasons, when a notification declared Dimapur as a tribal area on November 21,1979 ILP was not included for the next 40 years. Though ILP was not implemented in Dimapur due to various reasons, the state government in 2019 extended the ILP to Dimapur following pressure from various civil society groups in view of the rising cases of illegal immigrants in Nagaland.

After extending ILP all over Dimapur district including two new districts carved out of it, the government of Nagaland somehow faltered over the issue of making up its mind about the cut-off year for the purpose of implementing the ILP. In order to do that the government had initiated the process for Registration of Indigenous Inhabitant of Nagaland (RIIN) in first week of July. After some objections, a three-member Commission on RIIN headed by retired chief secretary Banuo Z.Jamir was constituted on July 29,2019 to frame modalities and given three months to submit its report. The Commission submitted its report to the government sometime in November 2019 but till date no discussions have been held in the assembly.

The RIIN commission had recommended December 1,1963 as the cut off date to determine inhabitants of Nagaland state. However, the state government for reasons best known to it has applied a different yardstick for Dimapur by proposing to have November 21,1979 as the cut-off year to determine inhabitants of the state. It is inconceivable that there can be two different cut-off dates in a tiny State like Nagaland, ie; December 1, 1963 for the other district and November 21, 1979 for the Districts of Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland. In this connection the Civil Societies have submitted representations after representation to the government since 2014 highlighting the merits of enforcement of 1-12-1963 as cut-off date and year throughout Nagaland on the basis of the standing government Notification NO. AR-8/8/76 dated Kohima the 28th April, 1977, but remains a deaf ear. At a recent meeting with chief minister Neiphiu Rio, the non-Naga inhabitants in Dimapur had expressed reservations about ILP and December 1,1963 as cut-off year since many would have issues of proving their claims of having settled on or before December 1,1963 due to non-availability of proper documents. In response the chief minister said relevant documents for the non-Naga inhabitants would be issued based on the verified data. Rio also made it clear that indigenous inhabitant status would not be accorded, but permanent resident status for those who had settled in Nagaland prior to 1963. For those who have settled in Nagaland after 1963, they would be given temporary resident status. The two categories would have to be considered for enactment in the assembly as the government will now have to repent at leisure for having remained ignorant all these decades.

India was the largest destination for the FDI in setting up of R&D bases by multinationals. The government hopes that it is temporary phase and would be corrected soon. But the way the post Hiroshima G7 meet sanctions on Russia have been tightened, it may not possibly be easy.

The Boeing had planned investing in aircraft maintenance operations in India. It is however lukewarm to the recent call of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Naga Club terms NSF FIR as ‘vexatious’

Sub: Vexatious FIR dated 27.05.2023 filed by the NSF. Sir, May we, the undersigned, have the utmost privilege to state the following for your kind appreciation and necessary action: 1.That it has been reliably learnt that one FIR dated 2705-2023 was filed by the Naga Students Federation alleging that their office premise and building has been damaged on the early hours of 27-05-2023 by unknown miscreants.

2.That the land on which the NSF Office is established along some other adjacent buildings where other shops/ offices/printing press were established were given to the Naga Club by Kohima Village.

It is pertinent to state that Naga Club was established in the year 1918. Thereafter, vide Ref. No. NSF/Corres/2/83-85 dated 04-04-1983 (ENCLOSURE-A) written by their then President the NSF requested for the utilization of the Naga Club building as their office.

Accordingly, vide Order dated 07-04-1983 (ENCLOSUREB) it was agreed that NSF shall be tenant of the Naga Club Building for a monthly rent of Rs.500/-. However, excepting for the first month (i.e. April 1983) no proper rent has been paid by NSF to the Naga Club thus far. It may be noted that during the life time of Shri. Vilavor Liegise the General Secretary, Naga Club whenever demand for rent was made a mere Rs.50/- & Rs.100/- were paid citing that they don’t have money. Despite that the Naga Club continued to keep the NSF as tenants for about 40 years thus far.

3. That all those decades ago, the Naga Club building was built with the purpose to unite the Nagas without borders by providing free accommodation and facilities to the Nagas coming from the remotest regions of the Naga inhabited areas so as to get to know each other better and to cooperate as brothers and sisters. Your benign authority is well aware that things back then were not as they are these days including the political scenario, economic status and general development.

However, the noble objective of our forefathers is completely distorted by the NSF by converting the Naga Club building and plot into a commercial establishment and by

collecting rents from various tenants behind the back of the Naga Club. As such Kohima Village Council, the traditional land owners who donated the plot came heavily on them that no one shall distort the Naga Club history vide Letter dated 11-02-2023 (ENCLOSUREC). The historic legacy passed down to us by our forefathers like Shri. Rhreichalie Pienyu and others of the then DC’s Office must not be distorted.

4.That when a person of exemplary standing such as Shri. Krurovi Peseyie was elected as President Naga Club in 2017/18 the NSF refused to have meeting with his team citing that their meeting with the Naga Club would legitimize and recognize the Naga Club. Perhaps things could have been different if the NSF had sat down with the Naga Club then.

5.That in 2018 when Naga Club was to observe its Centenary, Shri. Kewezu Mero, the Joint Secretary and Caretaker of the Naga Club sent Greetings Message to Shri. Krurovi Peseyie’s team. However, some people threatened Shri. Kewezu Mero to withdraw his Greetings Message which he accordingly did. It was only after some tall Chakhesang public leaders approached Shri. Kewezu Mero that he again withdrew his withdrawal Letter.

Further, in 2018 on the year of Centenary in order to commemorate the same a monolith was decided to be erected on the Naga Club Building site. However, on several occasions NSF obstructed the erection of the monolith at the Naga Club Building site by mobilizing innocent school and college students against the Naga Club who were unaware of the actual story, but were blindly following their leaders. Tense situation developed on some occasions. By the grace of God, it was then that some members of the Lotha tribe came forward offering the Naga Club monolith to be erected at Wokha;also some members from the Sumi community came forward offering the monolith to be erected at their area; also came Jotsoma villagers offering the monolith to be erected at their village.

The Naga Club after considering that a native of Jotsoma village Zasibeito Nagi was the first martyr to die for the Naga political cause decided that the monolith shall be erected at Jotsoma. Accordingly, the monolith was erected at Jotsoma on 29-11-2018

near Zasibeito Nagi’s tomb (ENCLOSURE-D).

6. That on 24-11-2020 and 20-10-2021 (ENCLOSURE-El & E2) the Naga Club wrote to the NSF to have a meeting regarding the Naga Club Building. However, the NSF never turned up neither did they pay the rent. Hence, after patiently waiting for 6-7 years requesting the NSF to have a meeting vide Ref. No. NC. NSF/VNNCB-01/2022 dated 12-07-2022 (ENCLOSURE_F) the Naga Club served eviction notice to the NSF. Then again without vacating the premise, the NSF instead issued clarification in the local dailies which was published on 25-07-2022 (ENCLOSURE-G) laden with incorrect facts and misleading narration. It is stated that before the occupation by the Forest Department, the Naga Club Building was also utilized by the NNC. Thereafter, the Forest Department came and occupied the building as tenant. It is pertinent to state that the Forest Department paid all their rent to the NagaClub. After Forest Department vacated the Naga Club Building the NSF were granted tenancy by considering the aforesaid Application dated 04-04-1983 at a monthly rent of Rs.500/-.

7.That again vide Re f . N o. N C - N S F / G S NCB/1-2023 dated 06-03-2023 (ENCLOSURE-H) the Naga Club served vacation notice to the NSF. However, it was not adhered to. As such vide Ref No.NC/DC-1-23 dated 19-05-2023 (ENCLOSUREI) the Naga Club wrote to the Deputy Commissioner, Kohima on the subject “Clarification on Naga Club plot of land near Old Secretariat Complex, Kohima”.

8.That some of the occupants of the Naga Club Building such as Japfu Printing Press, Mero Tea Stall, Kewezu Mero quarter of 4-5 rooms on being asked to vacate the building, did the same. As such those empty houses and rooms were demolished about three weeks ago. However, since the place is in the middle of the town and heavy machinery/ vehicle is required to dispose the debris it was decided that inorder to avoid public inconvenience the same shall be removed in the early hours of 27-05-2023. It may be noted that the vacation notice was also served to the remaining shops and establishments, besides informing them the same in person, but they did not vacate the building. Some of

them requested for extension of time to vacate the building which the Naga Club agreed.

However, despite the lapse of the extended time the building was not vacated. Pertinently, it is stated that the Naga Club did not keep any other tenant in the building except NSF. Accordingly, some youths were entrusted to dispose the debris of the already demolished building in the early hours of 27-05-2023. Meantime, those shops and establishments who did not vacate the building despite eviction notice being served upon them, the Naga Club entrusted the youths to demolish the structure on 27-05-2023 so that the debris shall be removed on the same day without creating public inconvenience. Therefore, the question of vandalizing public property or criminal trespass by unknown miscreants as alleged by the NSF does not arise. It is expected that the NSF being a highly respected organization which has produced many tall Naga leaders over the years shall act in an honest, fair, transparent and reasonable manner. It is stated that the undersigned are not miscreants, but bonafide owner of the land and building. Rather, it is NSF that is in unlawful and forced occupation of the Naga Club Building since the eviction notice was issued.

In the premises aforesaid, it is stated that the FIR dated 27-05-2023 filed by the NSF is malicious, baseless, misconceived and misleading. Be that as it may, the present issue between the NSF and Naga Club is a civil issue competent to be tried and decided by a Hon’ble Civil Court having jurisdiction. The practice of giving a criminal cloak to cases of civil nature has time and again been deprecated by the Hon’ble Supreme Court and the Hon’ble High Courts across the country. Further, the dispute is regarding immoveable property as such filing of FIR for offences under IPC is misconceived as the said statute is ill-equipped for deciding such cases. Therefore, it is requested that your benign authority may not take cognizance in the case so in order to allow the matter to be resolved in an appropriate court of law or before an appropriate forum.

If a sales executive approaches Romesh Saharia to open a new bank account, he can’t say ‘no’. Same is the case with fixed deposits. But nothing is of significant amount. Once opened, it remains unattended forever.

Now, after retirement, the couple is struggling to keep a track of their investment/deposit records. The Saharia couple is not alone. If not to this degree, most of us struggle to keep a track of our old bank accounts or investments. So, what happens to our old investments when we don’t operate these for long? Let’s learn.

If a bank account or a fixed deposit remains unattended for ten ears, it is considered an unclaimed deposit. This means, if you didn’t deposit or withdraw from an account for a decade, it is considered unclaimed. And when an account or deposit is declared unclaimed, the deposited amount along with the accumulated interest, is transferred to RBI in an account called Depositor Education and Awareness Fund.

This fund is utilised to educate depositors so that they don’t end up contributing to an unclaimed deposit. But the problem is enormous. To give you some perspective, a staggering Rs. 35,012 crore rupees has been deposited in this account only from the public sector banks until this February.

It’s also possible to claim an unattended account. For this, you have to visit our bank’s website. All the banks in India have a page on their websites for this. In the appropriate place. type your name to find out your deposits. Most of the websites will ask you to submit another detail along with the name. In most cases, it is your date of birth or PAN number or telephone or passport number. etc. Once the system verifies the details, it will give you the details of the deposits. Once you find out your deposits and want to regularise the account, you need to visit any branch of your bank. There you need to submit a letter stating the reason for not operating the account and your intent to regularise it. Along with the letter, you need to submit an ID and residence proof.

In case of a non-individual account, you need to submit a letter in the letterhead of the organisation. This you need to submit along with relevant documents.

The current system is to visit every individual bank or its website to find out about your deposits. This is a tedious exercise, more so if you don’t even remember where you have made the deposits or have the account. Very soon, however RBI will be coming up with a centralised system where, on a single page, you will be able to find information about all our unclaimed deposits. But the system is not yet ready.

NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (IANS): Youth unemployment in India is climbing sharply, a development that risks undermining the new darling of the world economy at the very moment it was expected to really take off, local media reported.

In contrast to China, where economists fear there won’t be enough workers to support the growing number of elderly, in India, the concern is there aren’t enough jobs to support the growing number of workers, CNN reported.

While people under the age of 25 account for more than 40 per cent of India’s population, almost half of them - 45.8 per cent - were unemployed as of December 2022, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), an independent think tank headquartered in Mumbai, which publishes job data more regularly than the Indian government. Some analysts have described the situation to

CNN as a “time bomb”, warning of the potential for social unrest unless more employment can be created.

JAIPUR, MAY 28 (PTI): Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday said the Congress will “compel” the Centre to implement the old pension scheme (OPS) in the entire country, asserting that the committee on the new pension scheme (NPS) was constituted under pressure mounted by his party.

Gehlot also announced to increase old age pension from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 if the Congress government retains power in Rajasthan.

“Under the chairmanship of finance secretary, the Centre has formed a committee to find out a way forward for what can be done after combining OPS and NPS. They formed the committee after we mounted pressure,” he said. The chief minister was addressing a ‘Kisan Mahasammelan’ in Maulasar of Nagaur district on the sidelines of inflation relief camp review. In a statement, the department said that the earthquake occurred at 10.50 a.m. and struck at a depth of 223km. Tremors were felt in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

CAIRO, MAY 28 (AP): The United States and Saudi Arabia called on warring sides in Sudan to extend a fragile cease-fire due to expire Monday, as weeks of fighting reached a stalemate in the capital and elsewhere in the African country.

The Sudanese army and a rival paramilitary force, battling for control of Sudan since mid-April, had agreed last week to the weeklong truce, brokered by the US and the Saudis.

Until late last year, its national leadership was still ready to lock down whole neighbourhoods and districts, even cities, in a bid to stamp out what were sometimes just small clusters of cases, reports ANI. The Chinese health authorities have reported a rise in Covid cases since April, especially from newer subvariants spreading worldwide. Zhong Nanshan, a prominent doctor

Sudan military ruler seeks removal of UN envoy CAIRO, MAY 28 (AP): Sudan’s military ruler demanded in a letter to the UN secretary general that the UN envoy to his country be removed, officials said Saturday. The UN chief was “shocked” by the letter, a spokesman said.

The envoy, Volker Perthes, has been a key mediator in Sudan, first during the country’s fitful attempts to transition to democracy and then after worsening tensions between military rivals exploded into open fighting last month.

Director Justine Triet won the Palme d’Or for her tense courtroom drama, which tells the story of a writer accused of her husband’s murder.

She becomes the third female director ever to win the prestigious prize, which was first awarded in 1955.

Her thriller stars German actress Sandra Hüller, who also stars in the Cannes runner-up, The Zone of Interest.

As she accepted the award, Triet slammed the French government over its response to recent pension protests.

“These protests were... repressed in a shocking way,” she said in her speech, after being presented with the award

by Hollywood star Jane Fonda.

According to WABetaInfo, this feature will allow users to easily share their screen during a video call.

This feature may be unavailable on old versions of Android, may not work in large group calls, and the recipient may be unable to get the content of the users' screen in case they are using an outdated version of WhatsApp. The report said that this feature is only enabled if users give their consent to share the content of their screen.

minor changes regarding the new bottom navigation bar.

NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (IANS/PTI): After protesting wrestlers were detained and the site was cleared at Jantar Mantar, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal took to Twitter and condemned the police action.

“This is Sakshi Malik. Olympics medallist, Padma Shri and Khel Ratna awardee. This is how she was dragged on the streets of Delhi today,” Maliwal tweeted while sharing the picture of Sakshi Malik being forcefully taken into police custody. “This is @ BajrangPunia. He is also an Olympics medallist and PadmaShri, Khel Ratna awardee. He has put his entire career on risk to fight for justice for women wrestlers.

Top wrestlers, including the likes of Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, were detained for violation of law and order after they breached the security cordon while trying to move towards the new Parliament building for a planned women’s ‘Mahapanchayat’.

Chaotic scenes were witnessed at the protest site at Jantar Mantar as wrestlers and police officers shoved and pushed each other when Vinesh Phogat, her cousin sister Sangeeta Phogat and Sakshi Malik tried to breach the barricades.

With the win, Prannoy secured his first men’s singles title in more than six years, marking a significant achievement in his career. He had previously

clinched the title at the 2017 US Open, which was a part of the BWF Grand Prix, the precursor to the current BWF World Tour.

Playing his first final of the year Prannoy and Yang went toe-to-toe early on in the first game. As the game progressed, both shuttlers battled to gain the upper hand. With the scores tied at 16-16, the Indian raised his game and went one game up in the match.

LOS ANGELES (USA), MAY 28 (IANS): Two-time Olympic champion Ryan Crouser demolished his own world shot put record at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix, the seasons sixth World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting.

Crouser added 19cm to the previous world record to register the throw of 23.56m on Saturday.

The previous world record was 23.37m, which the 30-year-old recorded at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene in June 2021.

B E R L I N, M AY 2 8 (IANS): Front runners Borussia Dortmund were held to a 2-2 draw with Mainz and allowed the second-placed Bayern Munich to snatch their 11th consecutive title and 33rd overall thanks to Jamal Musiala’s last-gasp 2-1 winner against Cologne in the last round of the Bundesliga 2022-23 season on Saturday night.

The German giants knew they needed a victory over Cologne to maintain their chances as well as a draw or defeat from Dortmund against Mainz.

Bayern caught a fairytale start into the last match day as Kingsley Coman finished off a counterattack from the edge of the box into the top right corner with eight minutes gone.

The visitors should have extended their advantage ten minutes later, but Thomas Muller’s header rattled only the woodwork, a Xinhua report said.

Thomas Tuchel’s boys thought they had made it two just before the break, but Leroy Sane’s goal was disallowed due to a foregone hand ball.

Cologne increased the pressure after the restart whereas Bayern remained harmless and got punished with the equalizer in the 80th minute when Dejan Ljubicic converted a hand

ball penalty to stun the visitors.

Bayern pressed frenetically as a draw wasn’t enough and got rewarded in the 89th minute after substitute Musiala danced through Cologne defence before drilling the ball past goalkeeper Marvin Schwabe to nail the 2-1 win.

“The game pretty much sums up my spell here. We controlled things from the get-go, we took

the lead, but we missed to add more goals. We then handed over control once again and conceded a penalty. Jamal had his moment though and saved us,” said Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund gave away the title at the last round as the BVB played out only a 2-2 draw with stubborn Mainz which wasn’t enough due to Bayern’s goal difference.

“Congrats to Bayern, who

sit atop the standings and deservedly defended the title. It is hard though, and it doesn’t feel right. We were 90 minutes away from bringing the title back home,” said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic.

Leipzig completed the season on the third spot after easing 4-2 past Schalke, who relegated after finishing the season on the 17th spot.

Union Berlin booked its berth for the Champions League after finishing fourth thanks to a 1-0 win over Werder Bremen.

Eintracht Frankfur t came from behind and stunned Freiburg 2-1 courtesy of second half goals from Randal Kolo Muani and Eric Junior Dia Ebimbe.

Relegation-threatened Bochum stayed in Germany’s top flight after trashing tenmen Bayern Leverkusen 3-0.

Wolfsburg missed the chance to play in Europe after losing 2-1 to alreadyrelegated Hertha Berlin.

Stuttgart shared the spoils with Hoffenheim and will have to go through the relegation play-off while Borssia Monchengladbach overpowered Augsburg 2-0.
