Efforts on to revoke AFSPA from NE: PM

DIPHU/DIBRUGARH/ GUWAHATI, APR 28 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday while speaking at a rally at Diphu, 250 kms east of Guwahati, said efforts are on to remove AFSPA completely from the northeast region. Later, addressing a rally at Dibrugarh in Assam after inaugurating seven cancer care centres and laying the foundation stone for seven others across the state, Modi said that he does not want anyone to fall ill but if they do, “we have built hospitals for them to get the best treatment without any financial burden.” Addressing a ‘Peace, Unity and Development’ rally, he said the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act could be withdrawn from various parts of the region as the law and order situation has improved in the last eight years. “As the (law and order) situation improved with 75 per cent decrease in violence in the region, there have been changes in the imposition of laws. The AFSPA was first

revoked in Tripura and then in Meghalaya,” he said. “Due to the proper control of the situation in the last eight years, the AFSPA has been removed from most parts of the state. We are trying to withdraw it from the remaining parts too. “The Act is applicable in some areas of Nagaland and Manipur, and we are working speedily to revoke it completely,” he said. Modi also said the effect of the BJP’s “double engine” government is evident in the return of permanent peace and speedy

development in Assam. The government has entered into peace agreements in Assam’s Karbi Anglong and in Tripura, while efforts are on to ensure permanent peace and speedy development in the entire region, he said. He said several outfits in the region had returned to the mainstream to march forward in the path of peace and development. Permanent peace returned to the region, and speedy development in the northeastern states was ensured due to a collective effort of the Centre and the

state governments, Modi said. He stated that this process is “on and will continue in the future.” “Earlier, the northeast was known for bomb blasts and violence and the worst sufferers were our mothers, sisters and children. Now as I see the smile on their faces when the youths have given up their arms, I feel God is showering blessings on me,” the Prime Minister said. The prime minister also laid the foundation stone for colleges of veterinary science and agriculture and a model government

CNCCI takes serious note of traders paying GST to other States DIMAPUR, APR 28 (NPN): Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) has taken a serious note of many traders allegedly indulging in the unethical practice of getting their GST registered in other States, especially in neighbouring States, and paying GST to those States while importing in bulk for supply, retail and reselling in Nagaland. CNCCI chairman Dr Khekugha Muru and general secy. Dr Seyievilie Mor also claimed that it had come to their knowledge that many establishments were purchasing in bulk off the counter from other States by pay-

ing GST to those State and importing to Nagaland for supply, retailing and resell. Noting that many godowns, distributors, wholesalers etc. had mushroomed in neighbouring towns, it clarified that while they had no objection to such a development, the crux of the matter was most of them paid GST to other States while conveniently wholesaling and distributing their products in Nagaland through small private cargo vans/ vehicles throughout the day. In all the three cases, they claimed that it impacted GST revenue of Nagaland. While the exact amount of revenue losses

could not be ascertained at this point of time, they said they were convinced that it ran into several crores of rupees annually. CNCCI warned such business establishments and traders that they would not hesitate to take stern action against them and also report to appropriate authorities to initiate action against them. They reasoned with such business houses and traders that since their principal place of business was Nagaland and were availing benefits like roads, electricity, security, sanitation, etc, from the State, it should be their responsibility to pay GST to Nagaland for development,

services and facilities. Appreciating the Department of Taxes for being able to adapt to GST regime at ease despite many difficulties and for being every ready to help the business community, they stressed that GST revenue generation was the most important component for State fiscal health. Therefore, they request the department to double their efforts on the three areas to improve GST revenue collection. It also directed all confederate district chambers to be vigilant of unethical businesses practices and assured the department of Taxes that CNCCI would extend all cooperation if needed.

college in Karbi Anglong and also launched 2,985 ‘Amrit Sarovar’ projects across Assam. The Rs 1000-crore projects for Karbi Anglong will give new opportunities to youths, particularly those who have returned to the mainstream to participate in the nation-building process, the PM said. “These foundations are not just that of any building or institution but are the foundations for the bright future of the youths of Karbi Anglong,” he said. Liezietsu said : “The NPF MLAs are working together with the all party

In a press release DUCCF president Tsenthungo Nyamo and general secretary Zasivikho Zakiesato said that the fuel adulteration has been operating in Nagaland for a long period of time and that it has to

come to a logical end. DUCCF also demanded that the state government explain to its citizens of Dimapur as to why the public were not receiving their monthly quota of kerosene oil. Lauding the Raising People’s Party (RPP) for exposing “such illegal activities”, DUCCF has urged the RPP to reveal the names of those involved weather be it student bodies, civil societies, organizations, government departments or individuals. “All these names should be exposed immediately, those who are

involved in this Fuel Adulteration racket,” DUCCF stated. Further, the federation has appealed to the law enforcing authority to arrest those involved “without any sympathy for their illegal activity.” Stating that it was keeping a close watch on the latest developments of the investigation, DUCCF affirmed to take stern action against anyone who attempts to manipulate the investigation. “We appeal to the investigation officer to leave no stone unturned,” it stated.

and amounting to approximately Rs 3.56 crore annually in energy bills. In its step towards “GoGreen” mission, it has also successfully commissioned 585 kWp of rooftop solar systems at various railway stations and other service

buildings in the last financial year. Out of 585 kWp, 195 kWp capacity was commissioned at Lumding railway station, 100 kWp at Dimapur railway station and 120 kWp at Kamakhya Coaching Depot under Lumding division. (Cont’d on p-8)

DIMAPUR, APR 28 (NPN): Western Sumi Hoho and Western Sümi Kükami Hoho have sought the intervention of the state government to resolve the KiyeviLamhai boundary issue. In a press note, WSH through its media cell demanded immediate attention of the state government on the Kiyevi-Lamhai boundary issue “before it becomes volatile as in the past.” WSH claimed that there has been “a heavy encroachment going on with sophisticated weapons at the disputed side where the state government ordered to maintain a status quo between the disputed parties.”

WSH alleged that new encroachments were taking place even despite deployment of IRB personnel at the site and the state government’s June 25, 2019 order. “The situation has become very tense once again and could explode out anytime. The WSH therefore urges the state government to intervene without any bias and settle the issue without delay,” WSH said, adding that the hoho would not be held responsible for any untoward incident that may rise up from this issue. WSKH: Western Sümi Kükami Hoho (WSKH) has appealed to the state government to look into issue of

land encroachment at Kiyevi village and resolve the matter at the earliest. This was among the two-point resolution adopted during the emergency meeting, attended by WSKH executive members; WSKH advisory board; area chairman/member and WSKH ex-presidents held at WSH office on April 28 in connection with the land encroachment scuffle, WSKH general secy. Kughato Awomi stated. WSKH said that failing to address the issue by the government would compel Zeliang and Sümi tribe to resolve the matter within their own customary law and that the government

would not be allowed to intervene during such time. While stating that there was “no land in Western Sümi areas that is yet to be developed”, WSKH said that “any individual/group carrying out development works within Western Sümi areas, with the permission of Western Sümi is acceptable but carrying out any development works without the permission attracts conflicts.” Therefore, it said that in order to avoid such conflicts among Naga brothers, WSKH has appealed the particular tribal hohos to look into the matter and recall/retrieve those land encroachers.

already decided to continue with their pre-poll alliance forged in 2018 on a seat sharing formula of 40 (NDPP) and 20 (BJP). Senior BJP party sources also informed that the alliance (NDPP/BJP) would continue, as it was made clear by the Central leadership. Talking about the Naga political issue, Dr. Lieziestu said that the government of India would never agree to a “piecemeal” or “separate settlement” for different groups over the same issue. He said the two Naga political groups ought to come to an understanding and “we (political parties) are appealing them to come together because the Government of India will never have piecemeal or separate settlements”. “Our main job now is to bring together the two conflicting groups to form a common front otherwise the Indian government may not continue to have separate talks for a final solution to the Naga political issue,” Liezietsu said.

Congress alleges `4600 crore food scam under BJP NEW DELHI, APR 28 (PTI): Congress on Thursday alleged a Rs 4,600-crore food scam, which, it said, has exposed the “real face” of the Modi government as the party demanded a full disclosure as well as punishment for those involved. At a press conference, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi alleged the government changed the rules of auction in 2018 under a scheme to provide pulses of Rs 4,600 crore to the poor and the armed forces only to “benefit a few big millers”. He claimed the CAG has found how by NAFED “allowed” big millers to “swindle” tonnes of pulses meant for the poor with the conventional auction rules rewritten. Congress leader claimed it was a “huge scam”. “I don’t think the facts are out before us. I don’t think that this is possibly even a part of the iceberg. We call upon the government to make a full disclosure immediately,” he said and demanded a comprehensive report on how this was allowed and punishment at the highest levels. “We condemn this and call upon the public to condemn it. Above all, this shows the true nature of this government,” Singhvi said.

Will be Oppn in Assam, NE states: TMC

GUWAHATI, APRIL 28 (IANS): The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders during a function, where several Congress leaders and workers quit the party and joined the TMC, on Wednesday announced that they launched an expansion drive of the party to fill the vacuum created by the opposition parties in Assam. Wednesday’s joining programme in Guwahati was held five days after veteran leader and former Assam Congress Chief Ripun Bora was appointed as the TMC’s Assam unit President by party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. TMC Lok Sabha MP, Mahua Moitra while speaking at the function said the party headed by Banerjee

would be the voice of the common people of Assam as all opposition parties have “become puppets” in hands of the BJP. “There is no party to raise the voice of the common people. We would fill the opposition vacuum,” she said, claiming that after Bengal, Assam is her second native state as she was born in the north-eastern

state. Moitra without naming Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a Congress-turned-BJP leader, said the BJP-ruled Assam government is in reality run by former Congress leaders. “They (BJP) bought them all and are still trying to buy the opposition leaders,” the TMC leader

claimed and said the saffron party was trying to divert the attention of the people from inflation and unemployment by focusing on religion, loudspeakers, food and other insignificant matters. “The TMC will fight the anarchy and not allow them to divide and rule,” she added. Bora, former Assam Education Minister, said soon a large number of workers and leaders of Assam would join the TMC, which he added would not enter into any alliance with either Congress or the Muslim-based and perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). Court reserves order on Mewani bail plea BA R P E TA , A P R 2 8 (PTI): A court in Assam’s Barpeta district on Thursday reserved its order on Gujrat’s Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani’s bail plea in a case where he is accused of “assaulting” a policewoman while being brought by a police posse from Guwahati to Kokrajhar. Mevani’s advocate Angshuman Bora told PTI that the District and Sessions Court has reserved the order in his bail petition till Friday. “We placed our arguments before the court. The prosecution side tried to take an adjournment. But the court declined it and asked them to submit their arguments today itself,” he said. The Congress, which supports Mewani politically, took out a protest march against the arrest of the Dalit leader, resulting in the detention of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief among others. Jignesh Mewani had

Jignesh Mewani been picked up by a posse from Assam police last week from Gujarat and arrested in a case against him for a purported tweet on Prime Minister Narendra Modi where he had claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “considered Godse as God”. The independent MLA from Vadgam seat in Banaskantha, who has pledged his support to the Congress, had used the same tweet to also urge Modi to appeal for communal harmony during his visit to Gujarat, the FIR at Kokrajhar Police Station, which was accessed by PTI, said. After being released

on bail in the case on his tweet, the Dalit leader from Gujarat was rearrested after being charged with assaulting a policewoman who was part of the police posse which accompanied him to Korkrajhar. Congress continued its demonstrations for Mewani’s release, even as Prime Minister Modi toured different part of the northeastern state. Party MPs, MLAs, former MPs and MLAs, members of the Youth Congress, NSUI, Seva Dal and officials from all cells and organs of the party participated in the protests in different parts, including in Barpeta and Guwahati. APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah led a silent march here and took out a procession through the streets of the town to the party office. The protestors were, however, not allowed to proceed as they did not have the requisite permission and were detained by the police, Barpeta Superintendent of Police Ami-

tava Sinha told Sinha said, “They had not taken permission for any demonstration and had to be detained when they tried to carry out the protest.” He added that prohibitory orders under CrPC 144 are in place in the district. Talking to reporters here, Borah questioned the complaint based on which Mevani was arrested by Barpeta Police. “How is it possible to molest a woman official when other officers were present and that too inside a police vehicle?” he questioned. Borah, taking a dig at the ruling party, also said “The state government is spending Rs 30 crore to welcome Modi while another honourable MLA from the same state is being held for allegedly assaulting a police official.” Party legislators and senior members also staged a protest in Guwahati, claiming the arrest of Mevani to be an “unconstitutional” one.

Assam Congress Secretaries Gajendra Prasad Upamanyu, Diganta Bhusan Barman, Babul Sonowal, Congress Spokesman Anup Jyoti Bhuyan, among others joined the TMC on Wednesday. The function was also attended by former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul M. Sangma and TMC Rajya Sabha member Sushmita Dev, who hails from southern Assam’s Silchar. Dev, a former Congress Lok Sabha member, while Sangma and 11 other MLAs of Meghalaya had quit the Congress and joined the TMC in 2021. Sangma in his address slammed the Congress and said no party in the north-eastern region was highlighting the cause and concern of the people.

Devgn-Sudeep banter: K’taka CM, former CMs insist Hindi not national language

issue. Just because a large population speaks Hindi, it doesn’t become a national language, Kumaraswamy said adding, less than nine states, Kashmir to Kanyakumari, have Hindi as second or third language or not even that. “This being situation what is the truth in Ajay Devgan’s statement? What do you mean by not to dub?” Kumaraswamy sought to know. According to him, from the beginning, ‘Hindi’ based political parties at the Centre have been making efforts to destroy regional languages. The Congress started ‘suppressing’ regional languages and that is being continued by the BJP, he charged. However, Ashwath Narayan said there will be topmost priority for Kannada in

the state and simultaneously it is necessary to treat Hindi as the communicative language at the national level. “There is no need to hate any language in order to strengthen our own language. We need to do what is possible in a constructive manner to nurture Kannada but there is nothing wrong in learning Hindi when we are giving overemphasis to learn English,” Narayan maintained. Bollywood actor Devgn and Sudeep engaged in a ‘brotherly argument’ on Twitter on the topic of whether Hindi is a national language or not. However, Sudeep clarified that the context in which he made the statement was different from the way it was perceived and that it was not intended to provoke, hurt or start a debate. The trigger for the argument was Sudeep’s statement a few days ago during a function in Bengaluru where the who’s who of the Kannada film industry celebrated the nationwide success of ‘KGF-2’ starring Yash. When the compere of the event said ‘KGF-2’ had a pan-India effect, Sudeep said Hindi is no more a national language.

BENGLURU/HUBBALLI, APR 28 (PTI): The friendly conversation between Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn and Kannada actor Kichcha Sudeep took a political turn with Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and former Karnataka chief ministers Siddaramaiah and H D Kumaraswamy joining the debate and insisting that Hindi is like any other language in India and not the national language. However, Bommai’s cabinet colleague Dr C N Ashwath Narayan said there is nothing wrong in learning Hindi as a communicative language at the national level. “Whatever Sudeep has said is correct. After the formation of states on linguistic basis, languages got importance there (in those regions). That is supreme. The same has been said by Sudeep, which is right. Everyone should accept and respect it,” the Chief Minister told reporters in Hubballi. “Hindi was never & will never be our National Language. It is the duty of every Indian to respect linguistic diversity of our country. Each language has its own rich history for its

Reacting to the dig at her on Wednesday, Mayawati said she never aspired to being the President and the Samajwadi Party leader was dreaming about it only to clear his own path to become the Uttar Pradesh chief minister. “I can only dream of becoming the chief minister of UP and the prime minister of the country in the days to come but can never dream of becoming the President,” the Bahujan Samaj Party leader, who has been chief minister four times, told reporters. “I have not spent my life in comfort and have struggled to work on the path shown by Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram to ensure that

India-Japan ties have deepened in every sphere in 70 years: PM NEW DELHI, APR 28 (PTI): On the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Japan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the ties between the two countries have deepened in every sphere, be it strategic, economic or people-topeople contacts. The recent visit to India by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for the annual summit laid out a roadmap for deepening the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between the two countries in a post-Covid world, Modi said in a tweet.

In Mainpuri on Wednesday, Yadav said the BSP “transferred” its votes to the BJP in the recent Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. “Now it will be interesting to see whether the BJP makes Mayawati the President or not in return,” he added. “The reality is that the SP is dreaming of making me the president in order to clear the path (for Akhilesh Yadav) to become the CM of UP, which is not possible,” Mayawati has now responded. “Despite striking alliances with different parties, the SP has not been able to form the government,” she said. Her own party won just one seat out of 403 and got about 13 per cent of the vote in these elections. The SP won 111 seats, emerging as the main opposition to the BJP in the state. During the elections too, Yadav had claimed that there was “nexus” between the BJP and the BSP as part of a deal to appoint Mayawati to a constitutional post.

NEW DELHI, APRIL 28 (IANS): Muslim bodies have appealed for calm and peace ahead of Eid next week in the wake of the recent communal violence. An open letter signed by the President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Jamiat Ulamai-Hind and 14 other bodies, said: “All Muslims should remain calm and composed both on their way to the Eidgah and also while returning home. They should not fall prey to anyone who tries to provoke and instigate them. New variant of Corona detected in Patna

India had highest number of internet shutdowns for 4th straight yr in 2021

PAT N A , A P R I L 2 8 (IANS): The health depar tment of Bihar on Thursday detected a new variant of Omicron in Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS). T h e n e w va r i a n t BA.12 is 10 times more dangerous than BA.2 which was detected during the third wave of Corona in the country. Prof Dr Namrata Kumari, the HOD of microbiology department of IGIMS, said: “Keeping in view the rising Covid cases, we had started genome sequencing of samples of Omicron variant of Corona. There were 13 samples tested and one of them had BA.12 strains. The remaining 12 samples have BA.2 strains.” “ We h av e a s k e d the authority for contact tracing of all the positive samples of Omicron. The BA.12 variant is 10 time more dangerous than BA.2. There were two to three cases detected in Delhi and now one case in Patna.

NEW DELHI, APR 28 ( AGENCIES): India recorded the highest number of internet shutdowns in the world in 2021 for the fourth year in a row, a report by digital rights and privacy organisation Access Now said on Thursday. Out of the 182 internet shutdowns globally in 2021, India alone accounted for 106, the report said. Of these, 85 were reported in Jammu and Kashmir as part of “counterterrorism measures” by the government. In 2020, India had accounted for 109 of the 155 internet shutdowns globally. The report said that there was a possibility of more shutdowns in India but the data could not accessed due to lack of government transparency. “The Indian government has been reluctant to create and maintain a centralized repository of data on the shutdowns authorities order across the country,” it said. The report noted that the Indian government had faced criticism when it imposed internet shutdowns in places where farmers were protesting against the now-repealed farm laws. But the global outcry has not led to improvements in

the situation on the ground, it said. “The government continued to impose shutdowns during protests, and continued to pursue prolonged shutdowns that leave people cut off from the internet just when they have the greatest need to connect,” it added. Access Now’s Asia Pacific Policy Director Raman Jit Singh Chima said that Indian authorities’ “bold and unwavering pounding of the kill switch” should stop. “An internet shutdown is not a solution – it is a disproportionate, collective punishment that violates human rights and is unacceptable in a 21st-century society,” Chima said in a press release. “The world’s largest democracy can only be preserved and strengthened with a commitment to facilitating access to the internet for all.”

After India, Myanmar had imposed the highest number of shutdowns in 2021 with 15 disruptions, followed by Sudan and Iran with five shutdowns each, according to the report. The reasons cited by the authorities for shutting down the internet ranged from political instability to elections, protests and even examinations, the report said. Access Now fellow Marianne Diaz Hernandez said that internet shutdowns and the rise of authoritarianism go hand-in-hand. “In 2021, governments across the globe proved how powerful blackouts can be as all-in-one tools to assert control over populations,” Hernandez said. “But we – civil society, the tech industry, UN bodies – also proved how powerful people can be in resisting and fighting this unstable online despotism.”

Moily slams PM’s ‘reduce VAT’ on petrol, diesel’ remark NEW DELHI, APR 28 (PTI): Former petroleum minister M Veerappa Moily on Thursday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his attack on the opposition-ruled states for not reducing Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel, saying his remarks amount to “travesty of justice” in light of the Centre not cutting excise duty. The senior Congress leader also said the prime minister should have focussed on Covid-related issues at the meeting with chief ministers called to discuss the pandemic situation in the country. “Prime Minister Modi should have addressed the rehabilitation of COVID-19 victims, the loss of employment and the varying figures of reported Covid deaths in India as against the figures reported by WHO which has shocked the nation and the world,” he said. M Veerappa Moily to opposition states to reduce VAT as against any semblance of reduction in excise duty by the Centre amounts to travesty of justice,” Moily said. He said Prime Minister Modi should have addressed the issue of skyrocketing prices as the average consumer food price has increased by 100 per cent between March 2021 and March 2022, according to the All India Consumer Price Index (CPI) released by the National Statistical Office. The increase in prices of milk, meat, fish, edible oils, cereal and vegetable prices translated into food inflation surging by 7.47 per cent on a year-on-year basis, he said. Moily said the prime minister has not uttered a word on these pressing issues. Between March 2014

and October 2021, the excise duty on petrol increased by over 200 per cent and the excise on diesel by over 600 per cent, he said. The central and state governments levy taxes on fuel and these taxes constitute 55 per cent of the total retailing price of petrol, while in the case of diesel, it is 50 per cent, Moily said. Pointing to remarks by the prime minister and BJP leaders that the BJPled state governments have reduced VAT on petrol and diesel, Moily said if one looks at the figures the the statements are found to be untrue. “For example, Madhya Pradesh levies 33 per cent VAT, Manipur 36.50 per cent and Assam 32.66 per cent on petrol,” he said. The former petroleum minister said that during the UPA regime, petrol and diesel as well as cooking gas and kerosene were sold at subsidised rates before fuel prices were deregulated. Instead of paying direct subsidy to oil marketing companies from the budget, the then UPA government issued oil bonds totalling Rs 1.34 lakh crore to the state-fuel retailers in a bid

to contain the fiscal deficit, he said, stressing that such practice of issuing bonds was commenced during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 2002. “It is not correct to say that the present government has paid the entire amount of bonds issued during the UPA period. Instead the present NDA government has just paid 10 per cent of it,” Moily said. During the UPA government, the price of crude oil was USD 108 per barrel but petrol and diesel were subsidised and sold at Rs 71.41 and Rs 55.49 per litre respectively, he said. The average price of crude oil in the last three years of Modi government has been around USD 60.60 per barrel, which in comparison was 108.46 USD in the last three years of the UPA government from 2011 to 2014, he claimed. When the BJP came to power in 2014, a litre of petrol in Delhi cost Rs 71, while diesel was Rs 55 per litre. The latest prices of petrol stand at about Rs 105.41 per litre in Delhi, Rs 120.51 per litre in Mumbai, Rs 115.12 per litre in Kolkata and Rs 110.85 per litre in Chennai.

Muslim bodies appeal for calm ahead of Eid

LU C K N OW, A P R 2 8 (PTI): BSP supremo Mayawati on Thursday trashed SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s remark suggesting that the BJP could make her the President, saying she would prefer becoming the country’s prime minister someday to realise her goals for the downtrodden.

There is nothing to find fault in his statement. Actor @ajaydevgn is not only hyper in nature but also shows his ludicrous behaviour.” According to him, Hindi is also one of the languages like Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Marathi. “India is a garden of several languages. The Ladder on the Foundation of Stability

VOL. XXXII NO. 142 DIMAPUR, FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 2022

India’s many languages

A

mong languages, Hindi is the third most spoken language of the world in 2019 with 615 million speakers. The language data of the 2011 census reports that Hindi is India’s fastest-growing language. According to this census data, there has been an increase of 100 million Hindi speaking people in the country i.e. 25.19 percent. The figures are indeed impressive and confirm that Hindi is not only widely spoken but popular and continues to grow. However, not all in India, especially those in the south and east (Bengal and Odisha) support the suggestion by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre to make Hindi a national language. After the Modi government came to power, the language issue has erupted into a divisive debate. In 2019, an RSS-linked committee (Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas) wanted the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to draft the question papers for the civil services examination in Hindi, and then translate them into other regional languages and English. This ignited the old linguistic war of Hindi versus English versus other regional languages reached a fever pitch after the aspirants from Hindi speaking states had gone on an agitation against what they described as ‘English bias’ for the UPSC preliminary examinations. Again the issue resurfaced in June 2020, when the draft National Education Policy (NEP) proposed the imposition of “three-language formula” that mandated learning of Hindi along with two other languages across all schools of India. Though the policy recommends learning in three languages, it does not compulsorily prescribe Hindi. Even in 2018, the then External Affairs Minister late Sushma Swaraj had demanded the United Nations to make Hindi the official language. She argued that Hindi is a widely spoken language. She said Hindi is spoken in Fiji, Mauritius, Trinidad, Tobago and Suriname and the Indian diaspora all over the world knows the Hindi language. This argument stood on weak grounds since even Arabic though spoken in 22 countries is not the official language of the UN. Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s reported statement that all eight Northeastern States had agreed to make Hindi a compulsory subject up to Class X. This was met with clarifications from north eastern states. The Department of School Education (DoSE) has clarified that Nagaland followed a three-language formula up to Class VIII and Hindi was already a compulsory subject up to Class VIII. There is no second opinion that Hindi should be encouraged but many do not support it being imposed in any manner. The national language is any language that is used for political, cultural, and social functions. The official language is the language that is used for government business, like in the national court, parliament, or business purposes. Even then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, himself a graduate of Trinity College London and every aspect a westernised Indian, had chosen Hindi as the official language of India in 1965. Even the Indian constitution states that Hindi should be the official language of India. According to article 343(1) of the Indian constitution, Hindi in Devanagari script and English are the official languages in India. The Eighth Schedule of the Constitution makes note of 22 regional languages, including Hindi. Hindi is limited to particular regions in the country — just like Bengali, Gujarati, Odia, or Kannada. Hindi is not under threat but growing; rather other Indian languages are in danger if Hindi is imposed. Therefore, the government should promote these regional languages also along with Hindi and recognise the rich cultural heritage and diversity of India.

DailyDevotion What You Will Get

I will give your life to you as a prize in all places, wherever you go. —Jeremiah 45:5

This is the firm and immovable secret of the Lord to those who trust Him– “I will give your life to you….” What more does a man want than his life? It is the essential thing. “…your life…as a prize…” means that wherever you may go, even if it is into hell, you will come out with your life and nothing can harm it. So many of us are caught up in exhibiting things for others to see, not showing off property and possessions, but our blessings. All these things that we so proudly show have to go. But there is something greater that can never go– the life that “is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). Are you prepared to let God take you into total oneness with Himself, paying no more attention to what you call the great things of life? Are you prepared to surrender totally and let go? The true test of abandonment or surrender is in refusing to say, “Well, what about this?” Beware of your own ideas and speculations. The moment you allow yourself to think, “What about this?” you show that you have not surrendered and that you do not really trust God. But once you do surrender, you will no longer think about what God is going to do. Abandonment means to refuse yourself the luxury of asking any questions. If you totally abandon yourself to God, He immediately says to you, “I will give your life to you as a prize….” The reason people are tired of life is that God has not given them anything— they have not been given their life “as a prize.” The way to get out of that condition is to abandon yourself to God. And once you do get to the point of total surrender to Him, you will be the most surprised and delighted person on earth. God will have you absolutely, without any limitations, and He will have given you your life. If you are not there, it is either because of disobedience in your life or your refusal to be simple enough.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR FRIDAY, APRIL 29, 2022

D

ifferent nations have tried various religious principles and convictions, political ideologies, and philosophical options as the foundation of their nations. For example, Haiti and Caribbean islands opted animistic Voodooism, and Marxism, Nazism, Communism, Non-religion and Secularism by some nations while biblical principle of human governance by some nations. In all these human journeys, shrinking and sinking foundation bring disasters and catastrophes. But strong foundation has not regret but flourishes with escalation. Case of Israel Israelite forsook their Deliverer and worshiped idolatrous gods. Their apostasy brought successive captivity from Assyria, Babylon, and Persia respectively. The fatal consequence was the result of the denial of their monotheistic faith in true God. This proves that nothing can go against the sovereign will of God. Unfaithfulness to God brought complete annihilation to the chosen nation. Few stood firm and strong in captive lands, namely, Joseph, Daniel and his friends, Mordecai and Esther, and Nehemiah who were responsible for the survival, rebuilding of the succeeding generations, continuing existence of their nation, biblical his-

tory, and paving the coming of the Savior, Jesus. The history of Israel is the evidence that vulnerability or stability of a nation depends upon its foundation. Nagaland – which way? Current issues include liquor prohibition, clean election, political ideology and Naga political solution, peace and harmony, and issue of new world order in global level. These are all good and pertinent subjects. But far more than and beyond all this is ‘lasting foundation’ for generations hereafter which is “Nagas now for the upcoming decades and forthcoming centuries.” It is high time for us to ponder over and contemplate about a strong foundation for the youth in the midst of many relativistic influences, doctrines and ideologies. Concerning banning or lifting Liquor Prohibition, law enforcing authorities, manufacturers, dealers and suppliers, and drinkers and indulgent are all collectively responsible. Human machineries may fail but eventually, all involved in violation are accountable to God. The Bible warns us with divine consequence for misleading, destroying and harming people (Luke 17:2; Galatians 6:7). People who breach the law of moral value of the citizens and cause others to fall and sin cannot escape. It may happen now or in genera-

tions down the road. Regarding Clean Election, voting is a birthright. Esau sold his birthright for a small quantity of food. It is fundamentally wrong to sell our votes or in exchange for something. Many sell their votes in exchange of benefit or assurance of employment of their sons and daughters. This transaction is an evil practice against our culture, principle of democracy, and ethical value of Christians. Sanctity of vote is a spiritual issue and a moral duty. The man of God refused to accept if Jeroboam would offer him even half of his possession (1Kings 13:8). The prophet Elisha said, ‘No’ to Naaman who offered him his big gifts as a sign of appreciation for his healing (2Kings 5:16). A person of integrity is vindicated in Election. Both Christian candidates and Christian electorates should uphold democratic principle of electing leaders. Money must not buy leaders we want to lead us. We must elect our leaders by clear conscience guided by God to lead people and promote strong moral foundation. Continuing the journey of Political Solution, monotheistic faith in one God must lead us in the course of political destiny. The principle of the Prince of Peace must be our yardstick that includes peace and harmony, and truthfulness that form the

foundation of national stability (Psalms 33:12). In case of political impasses or stalemate, it is spiritual issue. Biblical principle has room for any political form Naga people choose or opt to govern the land. Addressing the GrassRoot Issue It is the stable foundation of the ladder of a nation. The importance is ‘laying strong spiritual and moral foundation’ while we talk high of many things and theoretical propositions. The ladder may slip, collapse and tumble down, if it stands on sandy and shaky ground. The teeming hundreds of thousands of children and youth are the people of our foundation. They are your children, grandchildren, and children yet to be born. They must know and learn the truth and put them to practice. Nagaland will not regret decades and centuries ahead if the truth is laid as the foundation of our generation. Our boys and girls have the right to know their fundamental right and spiritual heritage in their education system. They must be given an opportunity to learn the value of life by connecting themselves to their Creator, God. They will become responsibly mature men and women on stable foundation if they are made aware while they are trainable (Proverbs 22:6). They will become dependable and

he past month has witnessed a resurrection of the debate over the supposed growth of ‘majoritarian’ tendencies in Indian politics. Beginning with the spat in Karnataka and culminating in the fracas in different states over the Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti celebrations, concern has been expressed by Opposition parties and a clutch of notables at the wilful targeting of the Muslim community by the Narendra Modi government and its camp followers. Although the political protests against this apparent rise in sectarian tensions have been subdued — the emphatic victories of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere may well be a factor — there have been louder expressions of outrage in the English language media, particularly against the rampant use of bulldozers against communities believed to be responsible for stoning Hindu processions. The belief that the Modi government, in association with the larger Hindu nationalist ecosystem, is determined to change the fundamental tenets of Indian democracy has been making the rounds over the past seven years. In an article in a collection, Majoritarian State: How Hindu Nationalism is Changing India (2019), the political scientist, Suhas Palshikar, observed that “the change that came about in 2014 is a regime change, a change in the nature of party competition and above all, a decisive move to craft hegemony that would ensure long term changes in the tenor and texture of democratic politics in India.” In another essay, Thomas Blom Hansen, the Reliance-Dhirubhai Ambani Professor at Stanford University, argued that “the deepening of democracy Reader’s note:

trustworthy people when their childhood habit is over (1Corinthians 13:11). Their spiritual maturity will overcome side effect and problem of consumption of liquor and its harmful effect. Democratic maturity coupled with spiritual sanctity will do away with undemocratic practice of election. In the same way, our youth or students must be given opportunity to learn and recognize ‘right direction’ in the life course of their socio-political journey. It is a missing link when we debate over transitory issues without addressing grass-root education or treatment. The truth is the power that can defuse and eradicate forces against morality and integrity of the people. In Nagaland, it is the biblical truth of Christian faith. It is high time for Nagaland to legislate the use of the Bible or Bible literatures in schools for Christian boys and girls. It is also high time for Nagas to formulate Naga political history as social science in education of our youth. The 18th century British statesman Edmund Bruke rightly said, “Evil triumphs when Good Men Do Nothing’? Of course, the statement referred to action of the dictators or totalitarians that led to human devastation during Second the World War. But the truth in it is ‘timeliness to act to generate good result.’ Beyond

and above all our debates and arguments, it is time to consolidate our solidarity towards stability of our imminent generation. Revisiting ‘Nagaland for Christ’ The slogan ‘Nagaland for Christ’ is not a mistaken theme. It was thoughtfully, prayerfully and unanimously coined in 1946 by the Naga leaders and was christened by the NBCC in 1958 as the nomenclature stands for eternal salvation in Christ, transformation in Christ, passion for mission, and clean management of human institutions. It coveys and reflects the foundation of Christian faith when the Nagas turned to Jesus Christ from animistic darkness and emptiness. It could have been an ambitious political motivation if it were ‘Christ for Nagaland.’ But ‘Nagaland for Christ’ is, subjectively, an indication and response to ‘transformation from darkness’, objectively, a passion and zeal for missionary responsibility, and obviously, it is a commitment for responsible and honest governance of human affairs. It is the integrity and a uniqueness that the Nagas want to express. It is a desire and a vision that the Nagas want to do something beautiful and good for their Savior and people. Varma with Thapar on breakdown of Heatwave, fuel blackouts across states talks between Cong & Prashant Kishor erage of 15 hours 7 minutes against the scheduled 18 hours. Similarly, electricity is being supplied on an average of 19 hours 3 minutes against the scheduled 21 hours 30 minutes in towns and 19 hours 50 minutes against 21 hours 30 minutes in tehsil headquarters. However, 24 hours of electricity is being provided at district headquarters. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav hit out at the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh for failing to provide sufficient electricity. The government claims to provide 18 to 20 hours of power in rural areas while only 4 hours of electricity is being made available and there is a blackout all night in many places. Kashmir valley is facing one of its worst power crisis as unscheduled and prolonged cuts in supply in the holy month of Ramzan have left the people distraught. Officials in the electricity department said the supply in April was around 900 to 1,100 MW while the demand was 1,600 MW.

NEW DELHI, APR 28 (PTI): A potent combination of sweltering summer and acute coal shortages have triggered blackouts across many parts of the country as states struggle to manage record demand for electricity and low feedstock at power plants. Fr o m Ja m mu a n d Kashmir to Andhra Pradesh, consumers are facing power cuts ranging from 2 hours to 8 hours. Factories are the worst hit as the industrial sector is the first port of call for regulating electricity supplies. After the hottest March on record, a large part of the country continue to experience extreme heat in April, sending power demand to an all-time high. The total electricity shortage in the country has hit 623 million units, surpassing the total shortage in March. At the heart of the crisis are low inventories of coal -- the fossil fuel that produces 70 per cent of India’s electricity. While the government insists that there is enough coal available to meet the demand,

the reduced availability of railway rakes to transport coal has led to coal inventories being at the lowest pre-summer levels in at least nine years. Also, with international energy prices shooting up following the war in Ukraine, coal imports have dipped. Besides measures to increase coal supplies to power plants, the Union government has asked states to step up coal imports for the next three years to build up inventories. Thermal plants across

‘Covid cases rising in Delhi but no severe disease’

Russia-Ukraine conflict highlighted Need to prepare for intense, short ops: IAF chief need for military self-reliant: Rajnath

NEW DELHI, APR 28 (PTI): Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Thursday said that though COVID-19 cases have increased in the capital, people are not developing severe disease and the hospitalisation rate is low. He attributed the low hospitalisation rate to vaccination and naturally acquired immunity. “Though Covid cases have increased in Delhi, people are not developing severe disease and the hospitalisation rate is low. This is because our population is fully vaccinated and a large number of people have had the disease in the past,” Jain told reporters here. He also said there is no need to panic about Covid cases among children. Several serosurveys have shown that though the infection rate among children and adults is almost the same, the severity of disease is “very low” in children. With the national capital witnessing an uptick in coronavirus infections over the past few days, the number of active cases on Wednesday stood at 4,832, up from 601 on April 11, according to health department data. However, the hospitalisation rate so far has been low, accounting for less than three per cent of the total active cases, the health department’s bulletin said on Wednesday. As many as 129 COVID-19 patients are admitted to Delhi hospitals, while 3,336 are recuperating in home isolation, it said. Earlier, when Delhi would have 5,000 active cases, Jain said, 1,000 people would require hospitalisation.

NEW DELHI, APR 28 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday the Russia-Ukraine conflict has highlighted that being self-reliant in military hardware is a vital necessity, even as he called for tri-services synergy in dealing with national security challenges. In an address at the Navy Commanders’ Conference, he said “jointness” in operations will be critical in any future wars and restructuring of military commands and establishment of theatre commands is the way ahead. “I am aware that adequate progress has been made towards the study on maritime theatre command,” he told the commanders. According to the plan, each of the theatre commands will have units of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force and all of them will work as a single entity looking after security challenges in a specified geographical

the country are grappling with coal shortages, indicating a looming power crisis in the country, All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) said. Peak power demand met or the highest supply in a day was 200.65 GW on April 27 while peak power shortage was 10.29 GW. Latest data showed that 147 non-pit head plants with total capacity of over 163 GW monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) had 25 per cent of the normative coal

territory under an operational commander. “Coming to the prevailing security environment in the world, the ongoing Russia and Ukraine conflict has once again highlighted that being self-reliant without dependencies is a vital necessity,” Singh said. In the last few years, the government has been focusing on making India a hub of defence manufacturing. The defence minister said the delivery of the first indigenously built aircraft carrier, Vikrant, would be “another milestone” event. The ship has already

stocks on April 26. These plants had 14,172 thousand tonnes of coal against the norm of 57,033 thousand tonnes. Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, has a 3,000 MW deficit. Against the demand of around 23,000 MW, the supply is just 20,000 MW, resulting in load shedding in rural areas and smaller towns. According to the data made available by the state power department, at present, electricity is being supplied in rural areas on an av-

successfully completed three sea trials. “All out efforts need to be made so that the ship is delivered and commissioned in the 75th year of our Independence. This would be a fitting tribute to the ‘Azadika Amrit Mahotsav’,” he said. The defence minister also noted that 39 ships and submarines out of 41, which are on order, are being built in Indian shipyards. “While the Navy has been at the forefront of indigenisation, it is important for us to leverage on the momentum that we have gained thus far. I urge the senior leadership to maintain their focus on futuristic capability development to ensure that the nation’s maritime power grows in tandem with our economic interests,” Singh said. In his address, Singh reiterated that the sovereignty of India and prosperity is dependent on the armed forces.

NEW DELHI, APR 28 (PTI): The current geopolitical situation necessitates the Indian Air Force to prepare for intense and small duration operations at a short notice, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari said on Thursday. In an address at a seminar, he also said that there would be a need for the force to prepare for “short swift wars” and be ready for long-drawn standoff akin to what has been seen in eastern Ladakh. “In the force, space and time continuum, there would be a need for us to prepare for short swift wars as well as be ready for a long drawn standoff akin to what we are seeing in eastern Ladakh,” he said. India and China have been locked in a bitter face off at certain friction points in eastern Ladakh for nearly two years though the two sides carried out disengagement of troops from a number of areas following a series of military and diplomatic talks.

Karan Thapar (L) grills TMC vice president Pawan Varma April 28. (The Wire)

NEW DELHI, APRIL 28 (THE WIRE): Prashant Kishor’s close friend Pavan Varma, of the Trinamool Congress, has suggested that the reason for the breakdown of talks between the Congress and the former is not due to the Gandhis, but due to the resistance from other Congress functionaries. In a 45-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Varma has revealed extensive details of the understanding and agreements reached between the three Gandhis and Kishor

Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari said the recent experiences of the Indian Air Force (IAF) as well as the evolving geopolitical scenario mandates it to be operationally and logistically responsive at all times. “The current geopolitical situation necessitates the Indian Air Force to prepare for intense and small duration operations at a short notice. This new paradigm of high-intensity operations, coupled with minimal buildup time would require major changes in terms of operational logistics,” he said. Though he did not specifically elaborate on the geopolitical situation, the

while explaining why the talks did not fructify. Varma has explicitly and repeatedly said that the reason behind the failure of talks was not Rahul Gandhi, as is being reported in the media. He denied that Rahul distrusts Kishor and thinks of him as “BJP’s Trojan horse”. Instead, Varma seemed to suggest that the problem was the opposition from other Congress functionaries. He firmly and repeatedly says that all three Gandhis were in agreement with Kishor’s views.

However, after a point in the interview one gets a clear impression that Rahul differed over the pace of implementation of those proposals. But Varma denies this. According to Varma, Kishor is committed to Congress’s idea of India and believes its restoration is critical for the country’s future. Varma then goes on to add that Kishor will be “happy” to try working out a deal with Congress a third time if Sonia Gandhi knocks on his door in the future.

There will be a need to cater for “resources bridging” and transportation for such contingencies, he said. “A focused action plan needs to be developed for indigenisation of all critical components in order to achieve the nation’s mandate of ‘Atma-Nirbharata’ (self-reliance),” he said. Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari said logistics have been identified as a critical tool for the nation’s economic progress, noting that there would be a need to cater for resource bridging and transportation to deal with contingencies.

Sanctions can have unintended effects: FM

WASHINGTON, APR 27 (PTI): Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that in an interconnected world, sanctions can have unintended consequences, and India is trying to work through them. Economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the US and European Union following the invasion of Ukraine in February this year have led to a fall in bilateral trade with Moscow. The ongoing war also fuelled energy prices and a shortage of foodgrains. Speaking at Stanford University, she said India’s stand on the RussiaUkraine war is with the view to safeguard its economic and security interest. “So, India’s position is not just for its economic interests, but also its security interests. The balance that India has taken in every decision in this context... because of the geopolitical location of India,” she said. Sanction always has an impact on not just the country on which it is imposed but on many other nations, she said, adding “it can have collateral impact

Nirmala Sitharaman

on many others who probably didn’t intend to have the sanction”. So, unintended consequences do bear an immediate and strong impact on countries in this digitally connected world, she said. Speaking about inflation, Sitharaman said in the interconnected world it spreads faster. This time it is not because of the US Fed tightening its monetary stance but the Russia-Ukraine war. Inflation is going to be largely driven by rising commodity prices and foodgrains, she said, adding the war has led to the shortage of wheat and edible oil. Crude oil prices are not coming below the USD 100 per barrel level and af-

fecting many countries. India imports about 85 per cent of crude oil from various countries, including Russia. Noting that inflation causes worry, she said the RBI is ceased of the matter and moving in that direction to keep it within the targeted band. Recently, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) headed by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das expressed concern over inflation and stressed that the central bank will have to constantly re-assess the “dynamic and fast-changing situation” and tailor its actions accordingly. MPC, which held its meeting from April 6-8, unanimously decided to keep the borrowing costs unchanged at a record low for the 11th time in a row in a bid to continue supporting economic growth despite inflation edging higher, especially in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The government has mandated the central bank to keep the inflation at 4 per cent (+,- 2 per cent).

Mukesh Ambani plans takeover of Walgreen Boots NEW DELHI, APRIL 28 (IANS): Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani is reportedly planning a takeover bid for the UK high street chain Boots, a media report said. Ambani is the biggest shareholder and chairman of retail-to-energy group Reliance Industries. Reliance is reportedly working on the potential bid with US buyout firm Apollo Global Management, reports the BBC. Earlier this year, the Walgreen Boots Alliance announced a review of the Boots business and reportedly put the company up for sale. The deal could see Boots expand into India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, according to The Financial Times, which first reported the joint bid citing people familiar with the matter. Under the plan, Reliance and Apollo would reportedly own stakes in Boots, although it was not clear whether they would be equal partners in the business, the BBC reported. Boots, which has more than 2,200 pharmacies, health and beauty stores in the UK, could be valued at as much as $7.5 billion.

(From p-1) Speaking on ‘Amrit Sarovars’ in the state, as a part of the Azadi ke Amrit Utsav to commemorate 75th anniversary of India’s Independence, Modi said he had started this in Jammu and Kashmir last week, and in Assam, “these facilities will not only be a source of water but also of income generation”. Later, addressing a rally after dedicating seven cancer care centres and laying the foundation of an equal number in Dibrugarh, Modi said that his government was committed to further strengthen the health infrastructure and facilities to provide the best and the cheapest treatment to the ill,

particularly those suffering from cancer. He said that he does not want anyone to fall ill but if they do, “we have built hospitals for them to get the best treatment without any financial burden”. The Prime Minister said that the centre has also focused on cancer treatment in the Rs 1500 crore Special package earmarked for the North East in this year’s Union budget as this serious disease weakens the economic condition of the cancer patients family with many forced to take loans. Medicines will be made available to cancer patients at half the price under the ‘Jan Aushadi’ scheme and make 900 medicines available at a lower rate.

Russia deploys military dolphins at UN chief Antonio Guterres tours Ukraine Black Sea naval base at Sevastopol BACKS THOROUGH INVESTIGATION INTO WAR CRIME ALLEGATIONS BY ICC

U N I T E D NAT I O N S / KIYV, APR 28 (PTI): Asserting that war cannot be acceptable in the 21st century, UN chief Antonio Guterres on Thursday voiced his support for a thorough investigation and accountability into war crimes by the International Criminal Court and appealed to Russia “to accept to cooperate” with the body. Secretary General Guterres, who met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow before arriving in Ukraine on Thursday, visited different locations outside of Kiyv, destroyed by the Russian invasion. At the Church of St Andrew the First-Called All Saints in Bucha, Guterres said that when “we this horrendous site, it makes me feel how important it is [to have] a thorough investigation and accountability. I am glad that the International Criminal Court is seized of the situation and that the prosecutor’s office

Antonio Guterres visits the town of Borodianka, as Russias attack on Ukraine continues, outside of Kyiv, April 28.

was already here. I fully support the International Criminal Court and I appeal to the Russian Federation to accept to cooperate with the International Criminal Court. But when we talk about war crimes, we cannot forget that the worst of crimes is war itself.” In Borodyanka town, he said that when he sees the destroyed buildings, he imagines his own family in

one of those houses that is now destroyed and black. “I see my granddaughters running away in panic, part of the family eventually killed. So, the war is an absurdity in the 21st century. The war is evil. And when one sees these situations our heart, of course, stays with the victims. Our condolences to their families, but are emotions are that there is no way a war can

be acceptable in the 21st century. Look at that.” At a destroyed Irpinsky Lipki residential complex in Irpin, he said this horrific scenario demonstrates something that is unfortunately, always true, “civilians always pay the highest price. Innocent civilians were living in these buildings. They were paying the highest price for a war for which they had not contributed at all. And this is something everybody should remember, everywhere in the world. Wherever there is a war, the highest price is paid by civilians.” Guter res ar rived Wednesday in Ukraine for his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, after his visit to Moscow where he met Putin who agreed “in principle” to the involvement of the UN in evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal plant in Mariupol. “I have ar rived in Ukraine after visiting Moscow. We will continue our

work to expand humanitarian support & secure the evacuation of civilians from conflict zones. The sooner this war ends, the better – for the sake of Ukraine, Russia, and the world,” Guterres had tweeted. Guterres and his team travelled from Rzeszow, Poland to Kyiv, Ukraine. On Thursday, the Secretary-General will meet Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. According to a readout of his tête-a-tête meeting with Putin, Guterres reiterated the United Nations’ position on Ukraine, and they discussed the proposals for humanitarian assistance and evacuation of civilians from conflict zones, namely in relation to the situation in Mariupol. Two months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Guterres travelled to meet Putin and Zelenskyy as he called for “urgent steps to save lives, end the human suffering and bring about peace in Ukraine.”

Israel PM’s family receives Don’t test our patience: Russia warns West death threat and bullet in mail

JERUSALEM, APR 28 (AP): family of Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has received a death threat and bullet in the mail for the second time this week, the police said Thursday. According to an Israeli official familiar with the matter, the target of the threats was Bennett’s 17-year-old son. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. Officials have not said who might be behind the threats. Bennett, who leads a small nationalist party, has come under heavy criticism from Israeli hard-liners who accuse him of abandoning his ideology. In 1995, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by a Jewish ultranationalist opposed to his peacemaking attempts with the Palestinians. Also, tensions have been heightened with the Palestinians recently following a series of deadly Palestinian attacks in Israeli cities, Israeli military raids in the occupied West Bank and clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police at a sensitive Jerusalem holy site. In a nationwide speech marking Israel’s Holocaust memorial day, Bennett lamented the deep polariza-

tion in Israeli society as he warned his citizens against letting internal divisions tear society apart. “My brothers and sisters, we cannot, we simply cannot allow the same dangerous gene of factionalism dismantle Israel from within,” Bennett said in Wednesday night’s ceremony, broadcast on national TV. Bennett’s speech, coming on one of Israel’s most solemn days of the year, came in a deeply personal context. On Tuesday, his family received the first letter with a live bullet and a death threat. Israeli authorities tightened security around the premier and his family and were investigating. That prompted his son oldest son Yoni to write on Instagram how upsetting the episode had been. “It’s just sad to see that real people write such horrible things,” he said. “To think that he lives and breathes like me but has a brain that was created by the devil is crazy.” Israeli media said Yoni, who is 17, was the target of Thursday’s threats. Police have said they are investigating both incidents. They have placed a gag order on the investigations and released few details.

LO N D O N, A P R 2 8 (AGENCIES): Russia on Thursday warned the West that there would be a tough military response to any further attack on Russian territory, accusing the United States and its key allies of undermining European security by openly inciting Ukraine to assault Russia. Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine has killed thousands of people, displaced millions more and raised fears of the most serious confrontation between Russia and the United States since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Two months since Russia invaded Ukraine, Russia has in recent days reported what it says are a series of attacks by Ukrainian forces on Russian regions which border Ukraine, and has warned that such attacks risk a significant escalation. Ukraine has not directly accepted responsibility but says the incidents are payback, while Russia has taken umbrage at statements from NATO-member Britain that it is legitimate for Ukraine to target Russian logistics. “In the West, they are openly calling on Kyiv to attack Russia including with the use of weapons received from NATO countries,” Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters in Moscow.

Maria Zakharova

“I don’t advise you to test our patience further.” The Kremlin said Western - and in particular British - attempts to supply heavy weapons to Ukraine threatened the security of Europe. “In itself, the tendency to pump weapons, including heavy weapons, to Ukraine and other countries are actions that threaten the security of the continent and provoke instability,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. Sergei Naryshkin, the chief of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), accused the United States and Poland of plotting to gain a sphere of influence in Ukraine, the strongest signal from Moscow that the war could end with forced partition of Ukraine between the West and Russia. Russia’s defence ministry said on Tuesday that if such attacks continued then Moscow would target decision-making centres in Ukraine, including those where it said Western advisers were helping Kyiv.

“Kyiv and West capitals should take the statement from the Ministry of Defence seriously that further inciting of Ukraine to strike Russian territory will definitely lead to a tough response from Russia,” Zakharova said. Zakharova cast Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as a puppet of the West, who was being used by the United States to threaten Russia. “You are being used,” Zakharova said. The United States has ruled out sending its own or NATO forces to Ukraine but Washington and its European allies have supplied weapons to Kyiv such as drones, Howitzer heavy artillery, anti-aircraft Stinger and anti-tank Javelin missiles. Total U.S. security assistance since the invasion amounts to about $3.7 billion, a U.S. official said. Ru s s i a n P r e s i d e n t Vladimir Putin casts such large arms shipments as part of a broader plan by the United States and its allies to destroy Russia - and has promised that it will never succeed. Putin says the “special military operation” in Ukraine is necessary because the United States was using Ukraine to threaten Russia and Moscow had to defend against the persecution of Russian-speaking people.

C O LO M B O, A P R 2 8 (PTI): Nearly 1,000 trade unions in Sri Lanka staged a one-day nationwide strike on Thursday demanding the immediate resignation of the government, including President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, over its failure to tackle the country’s unprecedented economic crisis. Sri Lanka is currently in the throes of unprecedented economic turmoil since its independence from Britain in 1948. The crisis is caused in part by a lack of foreign currency, which has meant that

the country cannot afford to pay for imports of staple foods and fuel, leading to acute shortages and very high prices. The unions from a number of sectors, including the state service, health, ports, electricity, education and postal joined the strike under the theme ‘Bow to the people - government go home’, urging the President, the Prime Minister and the government to ‘go home’. Teachers’ trade union spokesman Joseph Stalin said that the Rajapaksa government tries to hang on to power when the people

have got into the streets and demanded them to go. Ravi Kumudesh from the health workers’ trade union said that after Thursday’s strike, they would give the government a week to resign. “After that, we would strike continuously till the government resigns”. He said that over 1,000 trade unions joined the strike. The bank employees’ union said that all banks remain closed and public transport was crippled with just a handful of government-owned buses operating.

L O N D O N, A P R 2 8 (IANS): Russia has deployed trained military dolphins at its naval base in the Black Sea - possibly to protect its fleet from an underwater attack - according to a new analysis of satellite images, the media reported. The US Naval Institute (USNI) reviewed satellite imagery of the naval base at Sevastopol harbour, and concluded that two dolphin pens were moved to the base in February at the start of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, The Guardian reported. Russia has a history of training dolphins for military purposes, using the aquatic mammal to retrieve objects or deter enemy divers. The Sevastopol naval base is crucial for the Russian military, as it sits in the southern tip of Crimea which Moscow seized in 2014. According to the USNI’s analysis, many of the

NATO chief says Finland, Sweden could join quickly B RU S S E L S, A P R 2 8 (AP): NATO SecretaryGeneral Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday that Finland and Sweden would be embraced with open arms should they decide to join the 30-nation military organization and could become members quite quickly. Stoltenberg’s remarks came as public support in Finland and Sweden for NATO membership mounts in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Media speculation in the two countries suggest the two might apply in mid-May. “It’s their decision,” Stoltenberg said. “But if they decide to apply, Finland and Sweden will be warmly welcomed, and I expect that process to go quickly.” He gave no precise time frame, but did say that the two could expect some protection should Russia try to intimidate them from the time their membership applications are made until they formally join. Stoltenberg said he’s “confident that there are ways to bridge that interim period in a way which is good enough and works for both Finland and Sweden.” NATO’s collective security guarantee ensures that all member countries must come to the aid of any ally under attack.

Satellite images of Sevastopol and the dolphin pens at the entrance to the Sevastopol Bay.

Russian ships anchored there, while out of range from missiles, are potentially vulnerable to undersea attacks, The Guardian reported. Ukraine had also trained dolphins at an aquarium near Sevastopol, in a programme born out of a Soviet-era scheme that fell into neglect in the 1990s. During the Cold War, both the US and the Soviet Union developed the use of dolphins whose echolocation capabilities can allow them to detect underwater

objects such as mines. The US has spent at least $28 million maintaining its own troops of dolphins and sea lions - which are also trainable - to potentially help with conflicts. The Sevastopol programme was resurrected in 2012 by the Ukrainian navy, but the mammals fell into Russian hands after the 2014 invasion of Crimea. Ukraine unsuccessfully demanded the return of the animals, and RIA Novosti reported that Moscow planned to expand the scheme.

India ties with Russia as US couldn’t do it earlier: Blinken

WASHINGTON, APR 28 (PTI): India built its partnership with Russia out of necessity as America was not in a position to do that earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has told a Congressional hearing, underlining that Washington is now investing in that effort. Blinken, during a Congressional hearing by the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations on Wednesday, said that the India-US partnership has the potential to be one of the most important and foundational partnerships going forward over the next decades. Amidst Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the US has been pressing India and other nations to impose sanctions on Moscow and reduce their reliance on Russian weapons, oil and other commodities. “In the case of India, there is a relationship that goes back decades. And Russia, for India, was out of necessity a partner of choice when we were not in a position to be a partner,” he said in response to a question from Senator William Hagerty. “Now, we are investing in that effort. I think there is a growing strategic convergence between the

Antony Blinken

United States and India. “And of course, China is a big part of that,” Blinken said. Hagerty, a Republican Senator, had sought Blinken’s views on the India-US relationship. “What I see before us is something I’m certain that is very frustrating in the short-term when we have our differences and you deal with that every day. “But in the long-term, the strategic partnership that we have with India I think poses the opportunity to do more good in the 21st century,” Hagerty said. In response, Blinken said that he very much shares the perspective shared by the Senator. “I think this partnership has the potential to be one of the most important and foundational partnerships that we have going forward over the next decades,” he said.

Devgn-Sudeep language row: RGV says ‘north stars are jealous of south stars’

fter a war-of-words kicked off between Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn and South cinema’s Kiccha Sudeep on Hindi being the national language of India, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma came out with a statement saying that the “north stars are insecure and jealous of the south stars”. It all started when Sudeep said: “Someone said that a pan India film (‘KGF: 2’) was made in Kannada. I’d like to make

Today we are making films that are going everywhere.” To this, Ajay shared a strong statement on Twitter, saying: “@KicchaSudeep my brother, According to you if Hindi is not our national language then why do you release

The title for ‘Avatar 2’ has finally been confirmed

T

he title to the long awaited Avatar sequel has finally been confirmed. It’s been 13 years since the release of Cameron’s original sci-fi epic starring Sam Worthington (who plays Jake) and Zoe Saldaña (Neytiri). Now, director James Cameron has finally given the follow-up a name ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The film, which is set to be released in cinemas on December 22, 2022, will see Jake and Neytiri with their own family now, including Na’vi kids Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss). It is the first of four

sequels, which will focus on the family. According to Variety, CinemaCon spectators were given 3D glasses to watch the film’s first official trailer, which contained almost no dialogue and saw viewers immersed in different regions across the film’s world of Pandora. T h e f o o t a ge a l s o showed the local tribe of Na’vi interacting with various species resembling whales and pelicans, some of which flew through the screen and into audience member’s faces thanks to the three-dimensional technology. Cameron also appeared in a pre-recorded video to tell viewers the sequel is “designed for the biggest screen and the most

Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours to minimize the risk of food going bad. The bacteria that cause food poisoning grow quickly at room temperature. To make sure it’s safe, put food in the fridge or freezer in the 2 hours after it’s cooked or taken off a heat source, such as a warming tray. If it’s hot outside (above 90 F), do this within 1 hour. One in 3 people admit to eating pizza left out overnight. If those slices have been sitting out for hours, throw them away. Myth: Cool Hot Foods Before Refrigerating You can put hot foods directly into the fridge, especially if it’s a smaller item. You don’t need to wait until leftovers are room temperature. You can put hot foods directly into the fridge. Large amounts, such as a pot of soup or a whole chicken, can take too long to cool. If you’d like to chill them quickly, you can divide them into smaller, shallow portions or put them in a leak-proof container in a large bowl of ice and a little water. Fact: Set Your Fridge to 40 F or Below Set your refrigerator temperature to 40 degrees or below to inhibit bacterial growth. More than a third of Americans have toowarm refrigerators. This can lead to bacteria growth. Check that your fridge is set to 40 degrees or below; the freezer should be 0 F or below. If the control doesn’t show the exact temperature, you may need an appliance thermometer. And it’s best to leave room between items. This helps the cold air circulate and cool down food.

while to warm up. That means your leftovers may stay between 40 and 140 F for too long. Instead, microwave them, bake them at 325 F or higher, or bring sauces, soups, and gravies to a rolling boil. No matter what method you choose, always check the temperature with a thermometer before serving.

Myth: Leftovers Are Safe Until They Smell Toss food out after 3 to 4 days to protect against food poisoning. You can’t see, smell, or taste the bacteria that can make you sick. To protect against food poisoning, toss out food after 3 to 4 days in the fridge or move it to the freezer. While frozen leftovers are safe for a long time, they lose flavor and texture after 3 to 4 months. Always use airtight packaging or containers, and write down the date.

Fact: You Can Freeze Leftovers More Than Once It is safe to freeze leftovers more than once. Didn’t finish all those leftovers? Don’t toss them out. Put them back in the freezer and save them for another meal. Just make sure that you heated them to 165 F first. If a large container of leftovers was frozen and only a portion of it is needed, it is safe to thaw the leftovers in the refrigerator, remove the needed portion and refreeze the remainder of the thawed leftovers without reheating it.

immersive 3D available,” adding that he “set out to test the limits of what cinema can do.” The trailer for Avatar: The Way Of Water will debut in cinemas ahead of Marvel’s Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness on May 6. M e a n w h i l e, Jo h n Oliver recently spoke out about Cameron’s upcoming Avatar sequels, saying that “no one gives a shit” about them. (NME)

Myth: Microwaves Kill All the Bacteria Cover and mix your food mid cycle to kill bacteria in the microwave during cooking. Microwaves cook food from the outside in. This leaves cold spots where bacteria can grow. One study found that simply zapping a dish for 5 minutes didn’t kill salmonella. To microwave safely, cover leftovers with a lid or vented plastic wrap. Halfway through cooking, stir, rotate, or turn the food upside down. Let stand for a few minutes, and put a thermometer in different places to check the temperature.

Fact: Don’t Use Hot Water to Thaw Frozen Foods Thaw frozen foods safely to avoid bacterial growth. Putting frozen foods in hot water or leaving them on the counter to thaw can make bacteria grow faster. There are three safe ways to thaw food: in the refrigerator, in cold water, and in the microwave. It’s also safe to cook foods straight from frozen.

Myth: Eat Leftovers Right Away After Reheating Let food sit for several minutes after reheating in the microwave to make sure it’s safe to eat. If you’ve microwaved leftovers, you’ll need to wait a few minutes before digging in. Microwaves work by making food molecules vibrate quickly. Even afterward, they continue to create heat and cook that dish, so the temperature can rise by several degrees. To make sure your leftovers are safe to eat, let them stand for 3 minutes (Reviewed By: Christine Mikstas, RD, LD)

Myth: Freezing Food Destroys Bacteria Reheat thawed leftovers right away to keep food safe. While freezing can slow the growth of bacteria, it doesn’t kill them. When you thaw leftovers, the bacteria may start growing again and make you sick. That’s why it’s important to reheat thawed leftovers the right way. Myth: It’s OK to Reheat Leftovers in a Slow Cooker You should not use a slow cooker to reheat food because it could encourage bacterial growth. Slow cookers and chafing dishes can take a

Food Safety: Myths & Facts About Leftovers

Goalkeeper Radu’s howler dampens Inter’s Serie A title hopes ROME, APR 28 (IANS): Goalkeeper Ionut Radu dashed Inter Milan’s Serie A title hopes, as his terrible mistake allowed Bologna to complete a 2-1 comeback victory in a rescheduled match on Wednesday. The fixture should have taken place in January, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A win would have seen Inter Milan overtake AC Milan at the top of the table. Inter’s regular goalkeeper Samir Handanovic was injured, so Radu stepped into the starting line-up, which became the turning point of the match. Marko Arnautovic’s header canceled out Ivan Perisic’s opener for Inter, and dramatic scenes occurred in the 81st minute, when Radu prepared to gather what looked like a simple throw-in, but ended up sending the ball towards his own net. Bologna’s Nicola Sansone was on hand to tap in from close range, reports Xinhua. In a desperate bid for a win, Inter threw caution to the wind and poured forward, but to no avail. With the defeat, Inter remain second with 72 points, two points off AC Milan. In other rescheduled fixtures, Udinese sailed away with a 4-0 victory over Fiorentina, while Atalanta and Torino played out a 4-4 thriller with both sides converting two penalties.

Curry, who has been recovering from a foot injury, made five three-pointers, five rebounds and five assists, setting up a Western Conference clash with the Minnesota Timberwolves or the Memphis Grizzlies. “Steph Curry is a special, special player and you’ll probably never see another player like him again,” said Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson. “Some of the threes he made were so incredible, also getting to the rim and making the pocket pass.” Giannis Antetok-

The victory - which is Milwaukee’s first post-season series win over the Bulls since 1985 - sealed a 4-1 win in the best-of-seven series. “After game two, the team knew what the deal was,” Antetokounmpo told ESPN. “We knew what we had to do, we had to be desperate. We had to go out there and compete at a high level.

Oslo chess: Praggnanandha, Magnus Carlsen to fight for title in final round

OSLO (NORWAY), APR 28 (IANS): Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa will fight it out with World N.o 1 Magnus Carlsen for the Oslo Esports Cup title after losing his penultimate round match in the rapid chess tournament on Wednesday night Three points ahead going into the penultimate round of the $210,000 event, thev16-year-old Pragg suffered a painful defeat against Poland’s World Cup winner Jan-Krzysztof Duda. It handed world Champion Carlsen a golden opportunity to go level on points with the youngster and overtake him on the leaderboard due to their head-to-head score. Carlsen, as always, grabbed the opportunity with both hands by thrashing the lowest-ranked player in the field, Canad’s Eric Hansen. The Norwegian is now hot favourite to win the first Major of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour season. Duda also isn’t out of it, as he sits just one point behind on the leaderboard. However, the Pole needs a 3-point win against Hansen and defeats for both Carlsen and Pragg. Carlsen, meanwhile, faces the dangerous

Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in Round 7 while Pragg is up against Anish Giri. For Pragg, it was nowhere near as comfortable a day as he’d hoped. Game 1 started unconventionally as Duda played an English Opening with 6.e3 and then the ultra-rare 9.b3. Duda was allowed to advance a pawn on the f-file to the seventh rank and the result was inevitable. Pragg resigned on move 65, according to a report by the organisers In the second game, the 16-year-old from Chennai overstretched with 24.c6 and from there Duda was ruthless. Pragg shook his head as he resigned in an impossible position on move 37. It left the youngster with an uphill struggle

needing to win both remaining games on demand just to take it to tiebreaks. It wasn’t to be as the third game ended in a draw after the queens came off. The match ended 2.5-0.5 in Duda’s favour. Asked if he can win the tournament, Pragg said: “I just want to play better chess and then we’ll see.” So far, both matches had finished in three games and the third was no different as Liem Quang Le thrashed Play Magnus Group’s new ambassador, Dutch No.1 Anish Giri 2.5-0.5. The last match to finish was which went to a fourth game in which the Azeri needed to win to take it to tiebreaks, which the former won 2-0.

Sindhu, Satwik-Chirag enter BAC Kuldeep, Mustafizur, Warner shine as Delhi beat KKR by 4 wkts quarterfinals; Srikanth, Saina out

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty and Sindhu. MANILA (PHILIPPINES), APR 28 (PTI): Star Indian shuttler PV Sindhu notched up a straight game win over lowly-ranked Yue Yann Jaslyn Hooi of Singapore in women’s singles competition to advance to the quarterfinals of Badminton Asia Championships here on Thursday. The Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also made it to the quarterfinals but it was curtains for London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal and world championships silver winner Kidambi Srikanth.

Sindhu, seeded fourth, who had claimed a bronze in the 2014 Gimcheon edition, defeated Jaslyn Hooi, ranked 100th, 21-16 21-16 in 42 minutes to set up a clash against third seed Chinese He Bing Jiao, whom she had beaten for a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics. World number 7 Sindhu, a double Olympic medallist, has a 7-9 head-to-head record against Bing Jiao, whom she has beaten twice in the last two meetings. The third seeded mixed doubles duo of Satwik and Chirag too produced a fine performance to sail into the last-eight round with a 21-17

21-15 win over Japan’s Akira Koga and Taichi Saito. The world number 7 Indian pairing will next face either fifth seeded Malaysian combination of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik or Singaporean duo of Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Jun Liang Andy Kwek. H o w e v e r, S a i n a ’s dream of claiming her fourth medal in the prestigious tournament ended after she ran out of steam to eventually lose 21-12 7-21 13-21 to 22-year-old Chinese Wang Zhi Yi, ranked 16th in the world. Saina is on a comeback trail after recovering from some nagging injuries and had skipped the selection trials for the upcoming major events such as Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and Uber Cup. Srikanth, seeded seventh, too couldn’t step up his game when it mattered, going down narrowly to China’s Weng Hong Yang 16-21 21-17 17-21 in a men’s singles second round match that lasted an hour and 17 minutes.

MUMBAI, APR 28 (IANS): After the super bowling by Kuldeep Yadav (4/14) and Mustafizur Rahman (3/18), David Warner and Rovman Powell played remarkable knocks to help Delhi Capitals beat Kolkata Knight Riders by four wickets in Match 41 of the IPL 2022, at the Wankhede Stadium here on Thursday. K u l d e e p Ya d a v looked at his brilliant best against his old franchise and bowled like he had something to prove. He sent back KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer (42), Baba Indrajith (6), Sunil Narine (0) and Andre Russell (0) to finish with 4/14, breaking the back of KKR batting. It was a pity that he did not get to bowl his fourth over or could have completed a fifer. Mustafizur claimed three wickets in the 20th over, sending back Nitish Rana, Tim Southee and Rinku Singh -- Rana and Southee off successive balls. Chasing the target, Delhi reached 150/6 in 19 overs thanks to vital knocks by David Warner (42 off

DC captain Rishabh Pant celebrates with Kuldeep Yadav and teammates during the IPL match against KKR on Thursday. 28) and Rovman Powell (33 not out off 16), winning the match with six deliveries to spare, Rishabh Pant’s team got off to a worst-possible start as Prithvi Shaw was out for a first-ball duck in the first over, caught and bowled by Umesh Yadav. Mitchell Marsh was out for 13 runs off seven balls,

becoming Harshit Rana’s first IPL victim, holing out to backward square leg. David Warner (42) and Lalit Yadav (22) raised 65 runs for the third wicket before the Aussie was out, trying to negotiate a difficult bouncer on the middle by Umesh Yadav and holing out to Sunil Narine just two yards inside the rope.

Though the other batters were struggling, Warner looked in control, hitting Tim Southee to two boundaries in the 4th over and two boundaries off successive deliveries by Nitish Rana in the ninth over. Delhi lost their way a bit after that as Lalit Yadav and skipper Pant fell in quick succession

but Axar Patel kept them in the hunt as he blasted a 17-ball 24 to take them to 36 off 30 deliveries at one stage. Patel was run-out at a crucial juncture, caught short going for a second run as Shreyas Iyer made a brilliant throw running in from the boundary. But Rovman Powell saw them through in the end, hitting a 16-ball 33 to help them record their fourth win and move to eight points. KKR remained in the eighth position with six points from nine matches. Delhi with eight points are placed in sixth position. Brief scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 146/9 in 20 overs (Shreyas Iyer 42, Nitish Rana 57; Kuldeep Yadav 4/14, Mustafizur Rahman 3/18) lost to Delhi Capitals 150/6 in 19 overs (David Warner 42, Lalit Yadav 22, Axar Patel 24, Rovman Powell 33 not oot; Umesh Yadav 3/24). DC won by four wickets.

CL: Liverpool beat Villarreal 2-0 in first-leg semis Stokes succeeds Root as Eng test captain

L O N D O N, A P R 2 8 (IANS): Liverpool are one step closer to a third UEFA Champions League final in five seasons after a 2-0 win against Villarreal in the first-leg of their semifinal tie at Anfield, here on Wednesday. L i ve r p o o l s c o r e d twice in three second-half minutes to assume control of their UEFA Champions League semifinal against Villarreal. An own goal from Pervis Estupinan and Sadio Mane’s 20th of the season in a three-minute second-half spell did the damage and the only criticism which could be levelled at Jurgen Klopp’s side was that they should have scored more. First, Sadio Mane headed wide 12 minutes into a characteristically dominant display. Jordan Henderson hit a post with a cross-shot and Mohamed Salah twice missed the target before a thunderous Thiago Alcantara effort came back off the crossbar. If not dominant

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah fights for the ball with Villarreal’s Etienne Capoue, Alfonso Pedraza and Manu Trigueros during the CL semi final, first leg match. (AP) enough in the opening period, the six-time winners went up a gear after the interval. Fabinho’s header was ruled out for an offside in the build-up, but three minutes later the hosts

were in front when Henderson’s cross ballooned into the net via a deflection off Pervis Estupinan and a Geronimo Rulli’s fist. Liverpool threatened to cut loose when Mane

latched on to Salah’s pass before poking past Rulli, but Villarreal managed to limit the damage. Mane, whose combination with Mohamed Salah looked back to its

best, had three efforts, Salah himself had a couple while Luis Diaz cut in from the left to blast a rightfooted effort at Geronimo Rulli who unconvincingly claimed at the second attempt. Villarreal achieved what they set out to achieve in the first half - defend in numbers, slow the pace down and frustrate Jurgen Klopp’s players. It worked a treat until the visitors were hit by a quickfire double in the opening stages of the second half, putting Liverpool firmly in the driving seat ahead of the second leg in Spain. It will take an astonishing comeback from the Yellow Submarine to deny the Reds. Under Unai Emery the visitors had lost just one of 12 away games in Europe, in stoppage time at Old Trafford last September, and had beaten Juventus and Bayern Munich to reach their first Champions League semifinal since 2006.

LO N D O N, A P R 2 8 (AGENCIES): England unveiled Ben Stokes as their test captain on Thursday, hoping for a swift turnaround under the talismanic all-rounder after a tame end to Joe Root’s five years in charge of the team earlier this month. Root led England in a record 64 tests but his role became untenable after they managed one win in their last 17 tests, a run which included a 4-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia and a 1-0 series defeat in West Indies. “I had no hesitation in offering the role of test captain to Ben,” Rob Key said in a statement in his first major appointment since taking over as the managing director of England men’s cricket earlier this month. “He epitomises the mentality and approach we want to take this team forward into the next era of red-ball cricket.” Root, who initially wanted to continue in the job, stepped down citing the heavy toll it took on him.

Ben Stokes The 30-year-old Stokes, who has scored more than 5,000 runs and taken 174 wickets in his 79 tests for England, called it an “honour” to lead the test side. “This is a real privilege, and I’m excited about getting started this summer,” the Durham player said. Arguably the greatest all-rounder of his era, Stokes acknowledged Root’s role in his development as a leading figure in the England dressing room. “I want to thank Joe for everything he has done for English cricket and for always being a great ambassador for the sport all across the world,” Stokes said of

England’s batting mainstay. “He has been a massive part of my development as a leader in the dressing room, and he will continue to be a key ally for me in this role.” While Stokes was an obvious choice to replace Root, his battles with injuries and workload remain a concern for the team. He also took an indefinite break from cricket last year to focus on his mental health. England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive Tom Harrison was optimistic of a glorious “new era” under Stokes. “He cares deeply and passionately about what it means to represent England and he will lead us into a new era with great pride,” Harrison said. “It’s an important summer for our test side and Ben will, I am sure, relish the challenge before him and his team.” Stokes’ first assignment will be a two-match home series against New Zealand in June.
