KOHIMA, MAY 27 (NPN): Unidentified miscreants vandalized and demolished the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) central office at the Naga Club building in the heart of the state capital Kohima in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

The miscreants also vandalised at least five shops, an advocate’s chamber and three printing presses. However, offices of the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANSCU) and Kohima Press Club (KPC) located in the same building were left untouched.

formed that the incident took place around 3 a.m.

A five-member Special Investigating Team (SIT) has been set up to probe into the incident headed by addl SP Relo Aye. An FIR has been lodged, police said.

It was learnt that the police, who reached the spot, also seized some items that may have been used by the accused persons. Police also said that the miscreants

may have used heavy machineries to carry out such destruction.

NSF president K Tep remarked the federation’s office was a house of all Nagas and that he was deeply saddened to see documents of Naga students and Nagas in general being destroyed.

He mentioned that NSF did not suspect anyone as of now and hoped that the investigation of-

ficer would do a good job in bringing the culprits to justice.

NSF 24-hour ultimatum: Naga Students’ Federation has served a 24-hour ultimatum (w.e.f May 27) on the state government to arrest the culprits responsible for the vandalism and destruction of its office.

This was among several resolutions adopted during the extra emergency

presidential council meeting held on Saturday at DC’s conference hall, Kohima.

NSF cautioned that failure to arrest those responsible with the stipulated time, the federation would to resort to actions it deems befitting for which all the federating units and subordinate bodies shall extend their fullest support.

The house unanimously condemned the act of vandalism perpetrated upon NSF by some “unknown anti-Naga elements”.

The house also unanimously affirmed to stand by the decision of the emergency presidential council meeting “to protect the Naga Club building with the collectively support of all the federating units and the sub-ordinate bodies.”

It was resolved that all federating units and subordinate bodies shall publicly condemn the criminal action. (Cont’d on p-11)

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 7 (NPN): Two days after chief minister Neiphiu Rio held a consultative meeting with the non-Naga communities of Dimapur to deliberate on the Inner Line Permit (ILP) issue, PHE and cooperation minister Jacob Zhimomi reiterated the stand of the government on implementation of ILP. Jacob said this while speaking as the special guest at the 40th general conference of the Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) at WSH Hiyam, Chekiye under the theme “Friendship and Unity”.

Expressing serious concern over the increasing number of illegal immigrants in the State, Jacob said that they (illegal immigrants) have already started to interfere in the society’s social fabric and livelihood.

would be in utter chaos if there was no rule of law.

He therefore reminded that the provision (BEFR 1873), which was already in place, was being implemented to protect and safeguard the future and identity of the Nagas, and for this he sought the cooperation of all. He further pointed out that the state government has come out with two cut-off years-- 1963 and 1979 under which the ILP regime would be enforced.

He mentioned that non-Nagas who had been residing and owning lands

before statehood (1963) can own landed property but can only sell to indigenous Naga inhabitants of the state.

Jacob further said that non-Nagas who settled on or before December 1,1963 cannot be eligible to obtain indigenous certificates but would be eligible for permanent residential certificate (PRC). Those who have settled after the Statehood (1963-1979), would be eligible for PRC and ILP including those who have settled after 1979, he said.

He further said the state government has listed out various categories like labourers, tourist missionaries, professors, traders and students etc. covered under the ILP regime with fixed fees and time duration. The minister further said that for any non-Naga employee seeking to work in Nagaland, the employer would be the guarantor.

According to The Free Press Journal report, the Koh-e-fiza police station house officer Vijay Singh Sisodia said that the survivor woman (30) had met accused Krishnapal (26) in Nagaland in 2021. They fell in love after which Krishnapal proposed her for marriage and brought her to Bhopal.

NEW DELHI, MAY 27 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday asked the states and districts to develop a long-term vision to make India a developed country by 2047, when the country completes 100 years of Independence.

Addressing the eighth Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog in the national capital, Modi also urged the states to take financially prudent decisions which are capable of delivering programmes that meet the aspirations of the people.

He said, after meeting then general secretary of Naga Club Vilavor Liegisie, NSF agreed to pay Rs 500 as rent and that was how the student body came to occupy the building.

APO: Angami Public Organization (APO) has expressed deep concern over the vandalism of NSF office, which it said was also a heritage building.

NEW DELHI, MAY 27 (IANS): China is soon likely to become the world’s first country with oral insulin availability.

After successfully completing Phase III trials of oral insulin, China’s Hefei Tianhui Biotechnology (HTIT) submitted a marketing authorisation application (MAA) to the country’s National Medical Products Administration. Oramed’s US-based ORA-D-013-1 Phase III trial for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes showed significant lowering of A1C levels, which reflects (Cont’d on p-8) the average blood sugar

level for the past two to three months. HTIT is a strategic partner of Israeli company Oramed Pharmaceuticals.

“Oral insulin is a paradigm shift from the traditional injectable insulin market.

Therefore, there would be a lot of opportunities and challenges in the commercialisation of oral insulins,” said Prashant Khadayate, Pharma Analyst at GlobalData, in a statement.

“Even though insulin delivery through injections has improved significantly for patients, compliance is always an issue for injectable forms of insulin. Hence,

oral insulin will always be preferred, potentially reducing the discomfort associated with injections and thereby, improving overall compliance, provided it is equally effective in terms of efficacy and safety. Notably, it is difficult to comment on its efficacy and safety with injectable insulins as Phase III trials included only placebo,” Khadayate added.

In November 2015, HTIT in-licensed exclusive rights to Oramed’s oral insulin ORMD-0801 in China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

On the contrary, its partner Oramed terminated its oral

insulin clinical trial activities in the US in T2D following disappointing results of the Phase III ORA-D-013-1 trial in January 2023. Back in July 2006, Pfizer launched the world’s first inhaled insulin, Exubera, but barely a year later, it withdrew Exubera from the market as it was not commercially successful.

“A new mode of insulin delivery is always appreciated... Since, oral insulin is a new form of insulin delivery, HTIT and Oramed should develop an effective commercial strategy to make it successful in the market,” Khadayate said.

Security forces intensify operation in Manipur D I M A P U R , M AY 2 7 (NPN): Following the recent spurt in violence in Manipur, Indian Army and Assam Rifles have launched large scale combing operations in vulnerable flashpoints, including the higher reaches surrounding Imphal Valley.

Continuing with the operations, army and the paramilitary force launched multiple search operations in areas of Kangchuk, Motbung, Saikul, Pukhao and Sagolmang from the wee hours of Saturday to track down armed insurgents op-

erating in these areas. These operations are part of overall ongoing efforts of the army and Assam Rifles to restore peace and normalcy in the State. Army columns are using latest technology, equipment and other force multipliers while operating in the mountainous areas.

PRO (Defence) said that relentless action by the army and Assam Rifles on Friday night resulted in successful prevention of loss of life at one village each in Churachandpur and Imphal East districts of the State.

A DIPR report informed that the advisor who interacted with the principal and employees of ITI Mokokchung, wa s i m p r e s s e d b y t h e number of students at ITI, Mokokchung. He said out of the nine ITIs in the State, there were hardly any students in some of the ITIs. On being informed that ITI Mokokchung was one of the best in the State, he asked the teachers/ instructors to be zealous in imparting training to the students with sincerity so that they could compete and at par with other ITIs even outside the State.

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 7 (NPN): Two-day, Lotha Baptist Church Diphupar (LBCD) golden jubilee celebration commenced on Saturday, at its church premises, Diphupar.

The celebration programme was held under the theme “celebrating 50 years of God’s faithfulness”.

Fo c u s s i n g o n t h e theme, Kohima Lotha Baptist Church senior pastor Rev. Dr K Benri Lotha said that God’s faithfulness was demonstrated by His power in and around us as Lotha Baptist Church Diphupar celebrates 50 years of its existence.

Rev. Benri reminded the gathering that there was

no power on earth greater than the Almighty God who controls everything.

At the celebration programme, jubilee monolith was unveiled by LBCA executive secretary Rev. Dr Ezamo Murry, jubilee pandal was inaugurated by LBC Purana bazar senior associate pastor Rev. AK Jami, jubilee programme was inaugurated by LBC Bor-Lengri pastor Rev. Y Arhonthung Odyuo. The celebration programme was unveiled by special presentation from CNY department.

DIMAPUR: Primary Health Centre (PHC) Chunlikha under Tseminyu district and currently functioning under Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kohima office has been granted “Quality Certification” under PHC category, National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) program by National Health Mission (NHM), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (H&FW), government of India.

In a press release, CMO Kohima, Dr. Tumchobeni informed that the certification was received under the leadership of medical officer I/C, Dr. Cheyale Kath.

He informed that NQAS external assessment of Chunlikha PHC was done on April 21-22, 2023. Under PHC category, NQAS external assessment are done for six departments, i.e., OPD, Labour Room, IPD, Laboratory, National Health Program (NHP) and General Administration. Each department in NQAS are broadly arranged under eight Areas of Concern (AoC) – Service Provision, Patient Rights, Inputs, Support

Medical team and employees of PHC Chunlikha.

Services, Clinical Care, Infection Control, Quality Management and Outcome.

Under each AoC there are standards which are accredited by International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua) and meets global benchmarks in terms of comprehensiveness, objectivity, evidence and rigor of development.

Nodal officers from the district for NQAS external assessment for extending facilitatory support were, deputy CMO Kohima, Dr. Imchatoshi Jamir and DPM (quality assurance), Dr. Imnanoktsung Longchar.

The external assessors for the national certification of Chunlikha PHC were, district family welfare officer, West

Siang District, Arunachal Pradesh, Dr. Tomar Kamki and medical officer, PHC Bilkhawthlir, Kolasib District, Mizoram, Dr. Lalchhanhima Hmar.

It may be noted that dispensary Chunlikha was established in 1964 and upgraded to PHC in 2001 and Health and Wellness Center (HWC) in 2019. Healthcare system unfair to PwDs : Commissioner for PwDs

DIMAPUR: State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Diethono Nakhro lamented that healthcare system was unfair for Persons with Disabilities

(PwDs) and needed to be relooked to be more friendly and accessible for everyone, regardless of being a PwD or non-PwD. She said this while

delivering keynote address at the second workshop on “Rights of children with disabilities” related to health organised by Prodigals’ Home with support

from “Office of the State commissioner for Persons with Disabilities” at Tourist Lodge, here on May 27.

Nakhro pointed out that PwDs faced so many barriers, both minor and major, while accessing healthcare.

She said even the examination bed of a doctor was a major challenge and an embarrassment for persons like her, who were wheelchair bound and has to climb up the high bed.

She pointed out that almost all the toilets in hospitals and other healthcare were not disabled people friendly and that many medical examination equipment were not designed for PwDs. Citing a report pub-

lished by WHO in 2020, she pointed out that PwDs face more premature deaths, to the extent of 20 years gap, than non-PwDs owing to healthcare system and facilities not being PwD friendly and easily accessible.

Further, Nakhro called for collaboration of key stakeholders and also inputs and consultation from PwDs whenever policies affecting PwDs were in question.

Condemnations against killing of student leader in Tizit

DIMAPUR: Several organizations including deputy chief minister TR Zeliang have condemned the May 25 incident in Tizit where Tizit Area Student’s Union Action committee chairman, Ahoa Konyak was hacked to death by an alleged drug peddler.

TR Zeliang: In a condemnation note, TR Zeliang while condemning the murder of Ahoa, said that the ruthless act has left him heartbroken. He appealed to all concern to cooperate with the investigation agency and hoped that the investigation would be carried out without fear or favour so that justice was delivered at the earliest.

Zeliang also conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that God grant them solace and the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.

ENWO: Eastern Nagaland Women Organisation said it was outraged and anguished by the brutal and gruesome act of the accused, which only resulted in the loss of an innocent life.

ENWO fervently called upon the government to take serious note of the menace of alcohol and drugs abuse in the state, which has become a threat to the society.

ENWO also appealed to the law enforcing authorities to impose rigorous and befitting punishment to the perpetrator as per the relevant section of the law. It said that no leniency should be shown towards such criminal and appealed that justice be served to the deceased at the earliest.

In a statement, LSU president Lirhonthung E Kithan and general secretary Chanpenthung demanded the law enforcing agencies to award befitting punishment to the accused for fair justice and also appealed to the concerned authorities to enforce a policy in order to eradicate the trafficking and usage of drugs and substances in the state.

ZLSU: Zeliang Students’ Union Nagaland (ZLSU) expressed shocked and outraged by the coldblooded murder of a young and dynamic student leader whose life was tragically taken away while on duty to curb the menace of drugs and drug trafficking in the society.

ZLSU president Kingsalt Hegwang and general secretary Sanlakbo Namdau urge the investigating and law enforcing agencies to expedite the probe and award the highest degree of punishment to the culprit and deliver justice to the victim and to the Tizit Area Students’ Union.

ZLSU extended condolences to the bereaved family and said that the union stand in solidarity with the family and TASU at this hour of grief and sadness.

AKM: Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) vehemently condemned the gruesome attack and murder of Ahoa Konyak, chairman of the action committee, Tizit Area Students’ Union by a drug peddler while on official duty.

While appealing for justice, AKM president Lanutoshi Aier and general secretary Satemmongba said that such inhuman act was unacceptable in a peaceful society. AKM further urged upon the concerned authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and award

befitting punishment to the culprit.

AKM also expresses heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the bereaved family members and prayed that the departed soul may rest in peace. AZSU vice president Edward Nring and asst. general secretary Ireibam Pame said that every organization in its own area and jurisdiction has the right to carry out its own course of duty, which may not be palatable to many, but this does not give anybody the authority to strangulate such course of duty.

The union said it was deeply concerned about the incident, which has taken the life of a committed leader. It urged upon the law enforcing agencies to bring to book the perpetrator and deliver justice without any delay.

KVSU: Kongan Village Students Union vehemently condemned the barbaric act perpetrated by one Menshan Konyak son of Kapnyei Konyak upon late Ahoa,

who was cold bloodedly murdered while on official duty. The union has invoked all right-thinking citizen to condemn such uncultured act.

In this tough time, KVSU said it stands with TASU and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. Further, the union reminded the law enforcing agency to initiate stern action against the perpetrator.

PSC: Phom Laivangh Pangthai has expressed shock and sadness at the death of TASU student leader who was allegedly killed by a drug dealer while on official duty.

In a condemnation note, PSC noted that despite Nagaland being a small state with sizeable population, the state predominantly has higher rate of substance abuse of various forms than the national average, and expressed concern over the issue.

Appreciating TASU for pioneering a step against substance abuse, PSC also asked the state government to seriously look into the matter as Mon district borders with Assam State and international borders.

PSC also questioned the effectiveness of the State Substance Abuse Policy 2016, and emphasized on the need to implement the policy with all the stakeholders and make necessary amendments if required.

IMPHAL, MAY 27: Ahead of Union home minister Amit Shah’s scheduled visit, Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande arrived in Imphal on a two-day visit in strife-torn Manipur on Saturday.

He was scheduled to visit various places where Army personnel were deployed to take first hand stock of the situation. He will also interact with the troops, the source added.

In the afternoon, the Army Chief along with Lt General RP Kalita GOCin-Chief called on Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Imphal Raj Bhavan.

During the meeting, they discussed and deliberated over the current situation and future trajectory to restore normalcy at the earliest, a press communiqué of the Raj Bhavan said.

Talking about Friday’s operations, the official said that New Keithelmanbi village is adjacent to National Highway-37, which is the only lifeline to Manipur at this moment. “We had reports that people in the village have firearms and explosives. Our prime objective is to protect the highway so that no untoward incident can take place there. Around 250 trucks are using this road every day, carrying essential supplies.

TSL condemns attack on Tangkhul women

DIMAPUR, MAY 27 (NPN): The Tangkhul Shanao Long ( TSL) (Association of all Tangkhul women) has condemn the May 24 incident at Kwaikeithel bazaar Imphal, where four of its members were assaulted by a mob on their way to the airport to travel to Mumbai.

A press release by Tangkhul Shanao Long president Thing reiphi Lungharwoshi stated that after their vehicle stopped in the traffic congestion, a mob consisting of both men and women attacked them with iron bars.

Narrating the harrowing ordeal, the release stated that they were dragged down from the vehicle by their hair and their clothes, including their undergarments, were ripped. To save themselves, the girls shouted they are Tangkhul,

but the mob responded with words like You Nagas, You killers.

Their belongings were checked, strewn and their bags were ripped apart.

They were then taken to a secluded place and released after they were traumatized physically and mentally.

After such harrowing experience, they were stopped again by armed persons and threatened by loading and unloading their guns.

They were allowed to go only when they pleaded they are from Ukhrul. The women are being treated at Health Care Diagnostic Centre Mumbai, the release added.

The Tangkhul Shanao Long said it is appalled at such carnage and an at unprecedented time where “women are active actors and agents of violence and

even abetting their men to commit heinous crime and acts of violating tribal women.”

Ta n g k h u l S h a n a o Long said is shocking that the “streets are still ruled by mobs and tribals are unsafe in Imphal city even in broad daylight.”

The Tangkhul Shanao Long also condemns the attempt of COCOMI superficially apologizing that there was confusion in the identity as if it is alright to attack other lives and people.

This communal attack on any identity and ethnic group should stop.

Cong questions govt on economy, national security

GUWAHATI, MAY 27 (PTI): Senior Congress leader Ajay Maken on S a t u r d ay a c c u s e d t h e Narendra Modi government of “compromising” on national security, using “politics of hatred” for electoral gains, and “weakening” constitutional values and democratic institutions.

The Congress on Friday had said it would hold press conferences, titled ‘Nau Saal, Nau Sawaal’ (nine years, nine questions), in 35 cities over the next few days to highlight the “failures” of the Central government in the last nine years.

Accusing Modi of not addressing important issues, the grand old party asserted that it will continue to play the role of a responsible opposition and hold the government accountable for its actions.

Addressing a press conference here, Maken s a i d , “A s t h e M o d i gover nment completes nine years in power, the Congress has nine questions and we want to know their response.

“We know that they don’t want to address serious issues like unemployment, price rise and will rather try to divert attention to frivolous matters.”

for electoral gains”, “methodically destroying foundations of social justice”, reducing budgets of welfare schemes, and enacting “restrictive rules” against the poor and tribals.

The Congress also accused the government of “mismanagement” during the COVID-19 pandemic and failing to compensate families who lost their near and dear ones to coronavirus.

Maken also pointed out that the prime minister has failed to address a single press conference in the last nine years.

“We are not hopeful that he will answer these nine questions we have raised. But as a responsible opposition, it is our duty to raise the questions and tell the people the issues on which the government needs to come forth with their response,” the All India Congress Committee general secretary added.

I M P H A L , M AY 2 7 : Amid people’s demand for withdrawal of the Central security forces for their alleged “bias” in dealing with the situation, Manipur police on Saturday arrested three personnel of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) for allegedly setting a meat shop on fire in Imphal on Friday night.

In a quick response, the CRPF authority in New Delhi has placed the three RAF personnel belonging to the 103 battalion CRPF under suspension from their services pending an inquiry.

T h e y we r e a m o n g a large number of RAF personnel deployed in the state after the ethnic violence hit the state on May 3.

Commandant Dharmendra Singh of the 103 battalion RAF/CRPF placed the three personnel under suspension from their services, contemplating an inquiry against them.

During the suspension period, they will remain in force at the battalion headquarters at New Delhi, the order that was made available to the media stated.

The three RAF personnel allegedly torched a meat shop located only a few meters away from Tribal Market where a mob set a house on fire after some miscreants threatened vendors and shopkeepers at the Tribal Market on May 22 last. Friday night’s arson

incident took place after police arrested four persons including former MLA TT Haokip and one of his sons in the aftermath.

The police as well as local sources said that three RAF personnel who came on a car driven by a civilian set fire to the meat shop last night, around 9.30 pm before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.

The locals, however, prevented the fire from inflicting major damages by dousing the fire before it spread to other shops and houses. The shop was partially damaged.

A tension brewing up in the locality after the incident was, however, subsided after the local MLA Th Arunkumar calmed the locals and leaders of the Kabui based CSOs. The torched shop b e l o n ge d t o a p e r s o n belonging to the Kabui community. He interacted with the Kabui residents of the locality at Dimthailong Community hall and calmed the people while informing that the arrested three RAF personnel were suspended from their services, in a prompt action.

On Saturday, a sitin-protest was staged at various places across the state demanding abrogation of suspension of operation (SoO) truce with the Kuki militants, withdrawal of Central security forces and to safeguard the territorial integrity of Manipur.

AIZAWL, MAY 27 (PTI): With Mizoram slated to go to polls later this year, the Election Commission (EC) held a meeting with officials in Aizawl on Friday to review the preparedness, a statement said.

Various heads and nodal officers of central agencies were present at the meeting, which was chaired by Deputy Election Commissioner Dharmendra Sharma.

In the meeting, Sharma emphasised the EC mandate for ensuring free and fair elections, the statement said.

He pointed out that checking money and muscle power in the election will be the responsibility of central agencies working in the state.

He also directed them to take any perception of threat very seriously and to ensure a level playing field for all.

Deadlier than the first

W

orld Health Organisation (WHO) Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the world must prepare for a virus that is “even deadlier” than Covid which has killed at least 20 million.

While declaring the end of the pandemic, Dr.Tedros, warned of the threat of another variant emerging that causes new surges of disease and death remains, and the threat of another pathogen emerging with even deadlier potential remains. This is not a very reassuring message since it is largely believed that vaccines have more or less greatly minimised the threat from the virus. It was cold comfort when global media reported that China is bracing for a new wave of Covid infections that could see as many as 65 million cases per week by the time the surge peaks at the end of June.

This was another shocking news that a country that appeared to have managed to contain the spread of the pandemic originated in late 2019, that only months ago had enforced some of the harshest Covid control protocols on the planet is going to face another serious crisis. Now, with the latest omicron variant, XBB, fuelling a resurgence in cases, the response from China’s government and the public is muted at best. The new wave’s data was revealed by respiratory disease specialist Zhong Nanshan at a medical conference this week in the southern city of Guangzhou. According to state media, the wave that started in late April was “anticipated,” and that the modelling suggested China could be approaching 40 million infections per week.

Zhong Nanshan said by the end of June, the weekly number of infections will peak at 65 million. During China’s first omicron wave in December and January 2019, a different omicron variant was infecting millions of people every day, overwhelming hospitals and crematoriums in cities across the country. Store shelves were emptied of fever medications and schools were shut down. If the outbreak simply does not end, then declaring a time point at which “it’s over” is understandably tricky. As the WHO indicate in their recent statement, there needs to be a continued focus on COVID beyond any defined end of the public health emergency. This focus must remain even as countries consider how to mainstream their disease control into more routine public health and health service infrastructure. The fact is that COVID pandemic may never be over. However, the public health threat of this virus should continue to decline. The need to learn lessons from this pandemic ahead of the inevitable next time is essential. History has shown us that infectious diseases have the capacity to evolve and emerge unpredictably. Scientists had predicted that the next virus will be deadlier but it is possible that it may have already arrived but the world is yet to recognise it and when it does it could be too late.

The Holy Spirit has been given; the Lord is glorified— our waiting is not dependent on the providence of God, but on our own spiritual fitness.

The Holy Spirit’s influence and power were at work before Pentecost, but He was not here. Once our Lord was glorified in His ascension, the Holy Spirit came into the world, and He has been here ever since. We have to receive the revealed truth that He is here. The attitude of receiving and welcoming the Holy Spirit into our lives is to be the continual attitude of a believer. When we receive the Holy Spirit, we receive reviving life from our ascended Lord.

It is not the baptism of the Holy Spirit that changes people, but the power of the ascended Christ coming into their lives through the Holy Spirit. We all too often separate things that the New Testament never separates.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not an experience apart from Jesus Christ— it is the evidence of the ascended Christ.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit does not make you think of time or eternity— it is one amazing glorious now. “This is eternal life, that they may know You…” (John 17:3). Begin to know Him now, and never finish.

Being ambivalent about faith-based terrorism is harmful

A

midst the continuing danger posed to national s e c u r i t y b y t h e Pa k instigated radicalisation and terrorism, many academicians and even some major think tanks are underplaying the problem by suggesting that since terrorism had still not been ‘defined’ it was not possible to properly assess it - in the Indian context they are only diverting attention from the doings of a hostile neighbour that was now hand in glove with China for stepping up anti-India operations.

These analysts do acknowledge that firm adherence to religion could enlarge into fanaticism and that advocacy of fundamentalism was in reaction to the gradual e r o s i o n o f r e l i g i o n’s erstwhile preeminence in social and political spheres.

They are thus aware that a strong injection of religion in the political domain is what presaged the rise of the new global terror.

What these scholars leave unsaid however, is that Islam is one religion that made no distinction between faith and politics on the plea that Islam embraced all aspects of human life - personal, socio-political and even economic - and that more than in any other religion it made it easier for the forces behind terrorism to manipulate Islamic faith for enrolling militants - after converting their minds in the name of Jehad.

F u r t h e r, I s l a m i c extremism is the broad umbrella under which faith-based terrorism was nourished by those who wanted to use it as an instrument of politics.

Communal militancy giving rise to domestic hate crimes is a different m a l a dy r e q u i r i n g a n effective socio-political and legal response and is not to be mixed up with terrorism that has, in the Indian context, a cross-border input and a geopolitical dimension.

The apologists of the new global terrorthat was rooted in the exploitation of faith are raising an academic discussion around the ‘definition’ of terrorism describing it as both a ‘tactic’ and a ‘doctrine’, and while noting the role of a ‘political goal’ behind terrorism, watering down the ambit of terrorist violence by suggesting that it was confined to ‘direct attacks on non-combatants and civilians’. This is a bookish interpretation since terrorism essentially is a ‘resor t to cover t

violence for a perceived political cause’ and it can take recourse to such violence in innovative ways.

Terrorists indulge in surreptitious violence since the might of the state would be able to thwart an open attack. Also, without a ‘political cause’ terrorism would be reduced to sheer criminality which is certainly not the case.

W h e r eve r t h e r e i s a question of ‘cause’ there has to be a ‘commitment’ which in turn is determined by ‘motivation’.

Now ‘motivation’ can be ‘ideological’ as was the case with Naxalism or an assertion of ethnic identity as was noticed in insurgencies of the North East in the Indian context.

The new terror, however, is rooted in ‘faith-based’ motivation which in the case of Islam could be really strong if the call of ‘religion in danger’ or ‘protection of the faithful’ could be whipped up.

Terrorism takes on State targets as well and does not only attack the civilian population - which it does of course for creating political destabilisation.

Te r r o r i s m f a c i n g India is an instrument o f ‘ p r ox y w a r ’ t h a t Pakistan - presently in an all-weather alliance with China - has been waging in Kashmir and elsewhere in the country. The new faith-based terror is now operating on a geopolitical scale too because its origins lay in the antiWest Jehad launched by some prominent Ulema in the 19th century on the Indian subcontinent and elsewhere, that unleashed ‘radicalisation’.

In the proxy war against India, Pak ISI had used Islamic extremist outfits under its control - such as Hizbul Mujahideen, L a s h k a r e To i b a a n d Ja i s h e M o h a m m a d as an instrument of terrorism earlier but it was also subsequently able to induct Islamic radicals like those of Al Qaeda, Taliban and ISIS in covert attacks against this country. These latter outfits found shelter in Pakistan- deemed to be a US ally - even though the US-led West was the prime enemy of Islamic radicals in the Global War on Terror launched by the US in the wake of 9/11.

Many ‘experts’ on global terror miss the point that within the world of Islamic extremism, there are two distinct streams - one of the Islamic radicals who are ‘revivalists’ carrying the historical memory of the

anti-British Jehad waged by the Wahhabi Ulema in India in the middle of the 19th century on the call of return to the pristine Islam of the period of Pious Caliphs and the other appearing later in the 20th century that was led by Islamic thinkers like Hasan Al Banna who advocated that ‘Quran is the best Constitution’ but also held that an Islamic state could live ‘in competition not conflict’ with the Western democracies.

T h e Wa h h a b i s contented that the political decline of Islam was attributable to the deviation of Muslim rulers from the mandate of the faith. It is significant that Darul Uloom Deoband established by the protagonists of this Jehad - after its failure against the superior British might - devotes itself to the non-political work of teaching pure Islam but even today carries an antiWest ethos.

On the other hand, the other fundamentalist Islamic force that arose in the region of Iraq and Syria in the name of Ikhwanul Musalmeen (Muslim Brotherhood) founded by Hasan Al Banna, devoted to launching a militant campaign against the proSoviet Arab regimes of Nasser and Hafiz Saeed and called for a return to an Islamic rule. This was appreciated by the US for obvious reasons.

Soon Maulana Maudoodi - an admirer of Hasan Al Banna - created Jamaate Islami at Lahore with the same anti-Communist and pro-West ideology.

Some Islamic specialists erroneously paint Muslim Brotherhood as a ‘radical movement’ with the same brush as was used for describing t h e Wa h a b b i l e g a c y re presented today by the Taliban, Al Qaeda and ISIS. Radicalisation received a fillip in recent times because of the USled ‘war on terror’ that was started first in Afghanistan and then in Iraq and which was essentially a combat between US-led West and Islamic radicals.

N o t a b ly, t h e r i s e of Taliban-Al Qaeda combined in the AfghanPak region was later matched by ISIS - a competing radical force that came up in the IraqSyria belt. India’s security concerns have multiplied because Pakistan has manoeuvred to cultivate radical outfits while retaining the goodwill of the US. In fact, by pretending to mediate between the

Taliban and the US in the talks held to facilitate the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, Pa k i s t a n e a r n e d t h e goodwill of the US and at the same time ensured the reinstallation of the Taliban Emirate at Kabul to its great strategic advantage against India.

Pak ISI is now using both Islamic extremists and Islamic radicals in its proxy war against India using terrorism as its instrument. Al Qaeda and ISIS proxies based in Pakistan have been floated for this purpose.

A n ew c h a l l e n ge h a s r i s e n f o r I n d i a ’s Intelligence agencies because of the organised use of social media by Pak ISI to surreptitiously reach out to its potential agents, recruit ‘lone wolves’ for terror operations and tap civil society groups for building anti-India narratives on Kashmir as well as on alleged lack of protection for Muslim minority under the present regime.

Those behind the raising of terrorists often play the card of ‘supremacism’ of faith that acted as a ‘pull’ factor in regard to ‘motivation’. The Sino-Pak axis has added a new dimension to India’s national security in which external threats are causing internal destabilisation because of the planned attempt of the two hostile neighbours to fish in our troubled waters.

Pakistan is openly fanning the HinduMuslim divide in India and instigating communal militancy so that it could facilitate the recruitment of potential terrorists.

The recently banned Popular Front of India (PFI) - known to have been spreading radicalisation and working for ISIS - was linked also to SIMI, a front of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, that was banned earlier after it had attracted notice for creating a terrorist body called Indian Mujahideen in the early Twenties this year.

Pak ISI has thus been exploiting various Islamic extremist and radical outfits to create trouble for India. Radicalisation is a geopolitical danger but is a prime threat to the security of India on account of the mischief potential of Pakistan, Taliban domination of Afghanistan and the support of China to Pakistan on the issue of Kashmir.

India has done well to highlight the threat of ter rorism at ever y international forum and expose the danger

facing the democratic world as a whole from the Sino- Pak combine - an alliance between a Marxist dictatorship and a fundamentalist regime.

India has done well to maintain that Pakistan was behind cross-border terrorism against India and avoid any bilateral contact with Zardari, Pak Foreign Minister, who had come to attend the SCO meet at Goa recently.

A significant geopolitical development relating to the Muslim world is the increasing influence of radical stream in West Asia and its anti-West positioning in the Cold War type of polarisation that was developing between the US on one side and the ChinaRussia camp on the other.

Saudi Arabia with its pronounced fundamentalism has been the chief supporter of the US in the Islamic world but it had invited the wrath of radicals precisely for its political alignment.

Its conflict with Yemen symbolised this ideological contradiction within the Islamic world.

The radical Islamic rule of Taliban-Al Qaeda in Afghanistan is politically on the same side of the fence as China and this certainly helped Pakistan in evolving a ‘give and take’ between the Kabul Emirate and Xi Jinping whereby no controversies would be raised about the minorities in China and China would make an economic investment in Afghanistan.

Somewhat similar has been the equation o f r e s t r a i n t b e t we e n Afghanistan and the Central Asian Republics(CARs) that we r e s t i l l u n d e r t h e i n f l u e n c e o f Ru s s i a Pakistan was aware that Russia was averse to any spread of Islamic extremism in its former territories.

Equally important is the case of Iran under the fundamentalist regime of Ayatollahs.

Shia extremism is ideologically averse to Western Capitalism and Caliph Ali is even said to have glorified ‘poverty’.

Opposition to the US puts Iran and China on the same side of the geopolitical divide and it does not come as too much of a surprise that Xi Jinping has tried to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia, two countries with an opposing outlook on world politics.

Saudi Arabia as the Chair man of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) has

been realising for some time, however, that a group within - comprising Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia - was prepared to consider Islamic radicals as a legitimate segment of the spectrum of Islam and not discard them just because of their opposition to the US-led West.

Call for a return to the ‘golden period’ of Islam had always held its own appeal in the Muslim world and Islamic radicals were great advocates of this ‘revivalism’.

India has to deal with Islamic extremism and radicalisation considering its national interests.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iran are to be given special attention by India independently in order to handle the cross currents currently sweeping the Muslim world.

At home, the spread of radicalisation has to be checked through a multi-prong strategy of enhancing the state’s outreach to the sections of the minority that wanted p e a c e a n d h a r m o n y, stepping up action against potential Pak agents and curbing the funding of terrorism.

In today’s situation, India’s internal security has become highly vulnerable to the effects of civil society groups with vested interests joining hands with international lobbies led by Pakistan, to spread the narrative of alleged lack of protection for Muslim minority under the present regime.

Minority politics is also in full swing as political parties realised the importance of their votes in the crucial elections ahead. Sectional appeals for votes would be a part of the game provided they did not encourage ‘separatism’ which in the Indian context would raise an alarm because of the legacy of history.

Minority politics could generate militancy of a kind that would feed terrorist violence under the instigation of India’s hostile neighbours.

Indian democracy must continue to derive strength from a healthy sense of nationalism of all its citizens regardless of class, creed or region- in keeping with the mandate of ‘one man one vote’ on which it was conceived.

It should be remembered that the Preamble to our Constitution itself appeals to all citizens to work for the ‘Nation’.

eople from urban areas are buying honey from the market but many may not have seen bees’ everyday.

We must remember that we all depend on the survival of bees but the irony is that bees and other pollinators, such as butterflies, bats and hummingbirds, are increasingly under threat from human activities.

Nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depend, entirely, or at least in part, on animal pollination, along with more than 75% of the world’s food crops and 35% of global agricultural land. To raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the UN designated 20 May as World Bee Day. Bees and other pollinators are fundamental for the health of ecosystems and food

security. They help maintain biodiversity and ensure the production of nutritious food.

There is no doubt that bees are under threat. Present species extinction rates are 100 to 1,000 times higher than normal due to human impacts. Close to 35 percent of invertebrate pollinators, particularly bees and butterflies, and about 1 7 p e r c e n t o f ve r t e b r a t e pollinators, such as bats, face extinction globally.

If this trend continues, nutritious crops, such as fruits, nuts and many vegetable crops will be substituted increasingly by staple crops like rice, corn and potatoes, eventually resulting in an imbalanced diet. One of the career or business opportunities can be apiculture . Beekeeping or apiculture is the maintenance of bee colonies, commonly in man-made beehives. Honey bees in the genus Apis are the most commonly kept species

but other honey producing bees such as Melipona stingless bees are also kept. Beekeepers (or apiarists) keep bees to collect honey and other products of the hive: beeswax, propolis, bee pollen, and royal jelly.

Pollination of crops, raising queens, and production of package bees for sale are other sources of beekeeping income.

Bee hives are kept in an apiary or “bee yard”.

The keeping of bees by humans, primarily for honey production, began around 10,000 years ago. Georgia is known as the “cradle of beekeeping” and the oldest honey ever found comes from that country. The 5,500-year-old honey was unearthed from the grave of a noblewoman during archaeological excavations in 2003 near the town Borjomi.

Ceramic jars found in the grave contained several types of honey, including linden and

flower honey. Domestication of bees can be seen in Egyptian art from around 4,500 years ago; there is also evidence of beekeeping in ancient China, Greece, and Maya.

To promote beekeeping in India we have the National Bee Board and National Beekeeping and Honey Mission. Khadi & Village Industries Commission also promotes activities related to bees in the countr y. At KVIC through its Central Bee Research & Training Institute (CBRTI), 15 State Beekeeping Extension centers (SBEC), 100 registered institutions, Cooperatives and State Khadi and Village Industries Boards undertake training programs throughout the country. Few training includes Diploma in Beekeeping (6 months) for which required qualification is B. Sc. (Biology/ Agri. / Forestr y). There are other courses for which required

academic qualification is either 10th pass or even without academic qualifications. The courses are Certificate course in Beekeeping, Rock-bee handling, Elementary Beekeeping, Short term course in beekeeping, Queen Rearing, pollination, bee pathology, CF Sheet, etc, Honey Processing, Analysis of honey, there are few tailor made or customized training programs according to need and demand , Training in Honey Testing Kit, etc .

Young people can be part of the sweet revolution and get engaged in beekeeping and honey production. Interested people may take up the required training and plan their future with apiculture. We must protect bees as they are important for us so getting engaged means earning and saving at the same time which would enhance sustainable development.

Jawaharlal Nehru’s legacy stands 11 CMs skip NITI Aayog meet; ‘losing out’: Govt tall: Rahul’s tribute to India’s 1st PM

NEW DELHI, MAY 27 (AGENCIES): Eleven Chief Ministers are skipping the NITI Aayog Council meeting presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi today. Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has cited health reasons for not attending, and Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has not given any specific reason for his absence.

Arvind Kejriwal wrote to the PM on Friday, announcing his boycott of the meeting over the Centre’s recent ordinance, and charged that cooperative federalism in the country was being turned into a “joke”. The controversial ordinance by the BJP-led Centre effectively cancels a May 11 Supreme Court order that granted the Delhi government executive control over the bureaucracy.

Punjab’s Bhagwant Mann has written a note to the Centre saying it’s not paying attention to Punjab’s

interests, which is why he will boycott the meeting.

In the previous meeting, in August last year, the Chief Minister had raised the issues of Rural Development Fund (RDF), stubble burning, and farmers’ concerns which he says the Centre paid no attention to. Calling it a mere “photo session”, Mr Mann in his note has said there’s no use in participating in the meeting until pending issues have been addressed.

Three other prominent Opposition leaders -- Telangana’s K Chandrashekar

Rao, West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee and Bihar’s Nitish Kumar -- who have been trying to stitch together a grand united Opposition front to counter the BJP in next year’s Lok Sabha elections, are also skipping the meeting.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who maintains a calculated distance from both the NDA and the Opposition, was also absent from the meeting. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Mr Patnaik did not attend the meeting as he has a prior programme.

“11 Chief Ministers didn’t attend the meeting.

But several other Chief Ministers did. I have seen similar attendance in previous NITI Aayog Governing Council meetings. They might have their personal reasons,” NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam was quoted saying by news agency ANI. The BJP said the missing Chief Ministers did not bring the voice of the people to a crucial planning meeting, where over a hundred issues were listed to be discussed. NITI Aayog is a significant platform to evolve a shared vision of national development priorities, sectors and strategies with the active involvement of states, it said, adding that it’s an important body for determining the entire policy-framework and the road map for the development of the entire country.

“NITI Aayog is very important for the development and planning of the

country. 100 issues have been fixed for this meeting, and the Chief Ministers who have not come are not bringing the voice of the people of their state here.

How far will you go to protest against Modi?” BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

Government sources have said boycotting NITI Aayog Governing Council Meetings by Chief Ministers is equal to boycotting the state’s development. More than a hundred important issues will be discussed at the Governing Council Meeting (GCM), and states not being represented will lose out, sources said.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has said if non-BJP Chief Ministers are boycotting the meeting, it means the Centre is not treating them properly.

“Whoever is not obeying the Centre, the NITI Aayog is not listening to their demands,” he said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 27 (PTI): The Congress on Saturday paid rich tributes to Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary with former party chief Rahul Gandhi saying the legacy of the country’s first prime minister stands tall like a beacon, illuminating the idea of India and values of freedom and democracy.

Gandhi also visited Nehru’s memorial at the Shanti Van and paid floral tributes to him. Senior leaders KC Venugopal and Pawan Bansal were among those present at the memorial.

Several party leaders paid tributes on social media to the Congress stalwart.

Born in 1889, Nehru remains India’s longest-serving prime minister. He was prime minister between

August 1947 and May 1964.

He passed away on May 27, 1964.

“India of the 21st century cannot be imagined without the contribution of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru,” Kharge said in a tweet in Hindi.

A fearless defender of democracy, his progressive ideas strongly propelled India’s social, political and economic development despite challenges, the Congress president said. “My humble tribute to ‘Hind ke Jawahar’,” he said.

Paying tributes to the former prime minister, Gandhi in a tweet said Nehru’s legacy stands tall, like a beacon, illuminating the idea of India and the values he dedicated his life for – freedom, democracy, secularism and modernity. “His vision and values always guide our conscience and actions,” Mr Gandhi said and tagged an audio-visual montage on Nehru.

DNSU has, therefore, appealed to the responsible authorities to immediately take the necessary actions and bring those involved in public domain.

KPC: Kohima Press Club (KPC) through its president Alice Yhoshü and general secretary Atono Tsükrü Kense expressed deep concern over incident, which “indirectly” affected the temporary working office of the KPC that was housed within the Naga Club building.

KPC stated that any act of vandalism was unwarranted and that of cowardice, and had no place in a civilized society. The club has urged the responsible authorities to conduct a swift investigation into the incident and take action as per the law of the land.

ASU: Angami Students’ Union (ASU) expressed anguish and concern over the act of vandalism and appealed to the law enforcing agencies to immediately arrest the perpetrators and “initiate the most befitting action” as per the law of the land.

ASU through its president Bisevi Nakhro and vice president Kevilelhou Zumu stated that such vandalism was alien to the Naga people. The union stated that the audacity of some miscreants to mastermind “this heinous act” in Angami homeland was a direct confrontation with the ASU. ASU stated that it would not tolerate “this cowardly barbarism” and

APO has, therefore, appealed to all Nagas to show understanding of the positions taken in the conflict.

APO also appealed all to desist from aggravating situations but show the compassion in helping resolve the issue, which it said would also help all sides in evolving a solution that will serve the larger cause of the Nagas.

NEW DELHI, MAY 27 (AGENCIES): Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) continued to buy in Indian equities for the entire month of May as of now.

An inflow of Rs. 37,317 crore has been recorded till May 26th, which is the highest investment in nine months by FPIs. Foreign investors have been buyers across sectors with massive investment pumped in financial services stocks.

The trend in FPIs is likely to continue ahead, which does bring a possible case for the Nifty 50 to touch a new record high.

by Mint, as per the NSDL data, FPIs inflow in Indian equities comes to Rs.37,317 crore from May 1st to 26th.

This is not just the highest monthly buying of 2023, but also the highest since November last year.

N E W D E L H I , M AY 27 (AGENCIES): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a fine of Rs 84.5 lakh on Central Bank of India for noncompliance with fraudclassification norms.

According to Financial Express report, a statutory inspection for supervisory evaluation of the bank was conducted by the Reserve Bank of India and it showed that the bank had failed to report certain accounts as fraud within seven days of the decision of the joint lenders’ forum (JLF) to declare those as fraud.

The bank also recovered SMS alert charges from its customers on a flat basis rather than on an actual usage basis.

“In furtherance to the same, a notice was issued to the bank advising it to show cause as to why penalty should not be imposed on it for failure to comply with the said directions, as stated therein,” the central bank said in a press release.

NEW DELHI, MAY 27 (PTI): Court is not an institution to sermonise society on morality and ethics and rather, it is bound by the rule of law while taking decisions, the Supreme Court has said.

The top court made this observation while ordering premature release of a woman convicted for murder of two children.

The woman had an affair with a man who used to often threaten her. So she decided to commit suicide along with her children.

She bought pesticides meant for plants and administered poison to her two children. Thereafter, when she poured the pesticide in a tumbler to consume it herself, her niece pushed it down.

Unfortunately, the two children were declared dead on arrival in the hospital and an FIR under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code was lodged.

The trial court convicted the woman under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 309 (suicide) and sentenced her life imprisonment besides a fine.

The high court partly allowed her plea by acquitting her under Section 309 while upholding the conviction under Section 302 of IPC. The woman pleaded for premature release, saying she was in prison for almost 20 years. However, the recommendation of the State Level Committee was rejected by the Tamil Nadu government considering the cruel and

brutal nature of the offence committed by her. A Supreme Court bench of justices Ajay Rastogi and Ahsanuddin Amanullah said the woman never tried to murder her sons with a view to continue her illicit relationship.

“On the contrary, she had tried to commit suicide herself along with her children not with a view to continue her illicit relationship with her paramour but rather, in disappointment and frustration over the quarrel picked up by her paramour. “This court is not an institution to sermonise society on morality and ethics and we say no further on this score, bound as we are, by the brooding presence of the rule of law,” the bench said.

The apex court said the case cannot be simply bracketed as a ‘cruel and brutal’ offence as the woman herself was trying to end her life but was prevented by her niece in the nick of time.

“Moreover, the recommendation of the State Level Committee conveyed by the Additional Director General of Police/Inspector General of Prisons also notes her undisputed reflective conduct as also the long period of incarceration already undergone,” it said.

The top court said there is no valid reason or justifiable ground for the State not accepting the recommendation of the State Level Committee for premature release of the woman.

Born in 1877 in Sialkot, in undivided India, Iqbal had written the famous song “Saare Jahan Se Achha.” He is often

credited with giving birth to the idea of Pakistan.

The university’s academic council passed a motion on Friday for the removal of the chapter titled ‘Modern Indian Political Thought’.

It is part of the BA sixth-semester paper, officials said, adding that the matter will now be presented before the executive council of Delhi University (DU) for a final call.

Discontentment after K’taka cabinet expansion

BENGALURU, MAY 27 (PTI): While joy swept Raj Bhavan as 24 ministers were sworn in on Saturday, the discontent among many senior legislators who were denied a ministerial position in the 34-member Cabinet of the Siddaramaiah government erupted in the form of protests outside.

Dejected supporters of the legislators who could not make it to the Cabinet raised slogans outside the Governor’s residence where the ministers took oath.

Along stated, “People who did this are not fit to be called citizens of Nagaland. NSF carries the aspirations of Naga people in every sphere of life. Booking the miscreants under law will not be enough. Their names and faces should be revealed to the society so that every Naga knows them and what they did.”

Tongpang Ozukum, who also visited the site, condemned the act and said that there was nothing left to say as the people who did this were not in their right state of mind, adding that any person with a nationalistic mindset could not do such a thing with the building.

Terming the entire episode as a “shameless act”, he said that the building and infrastructure could be demolished, but the spirit of Naga student community can never be trampled upon.

Jacob reiterates state govt’s stand on implementation of ILP

BEIJING, MAY 27 (AP): Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said on Saturday that it detected three Chinese warships, including the Shandong aircraft carrier, passing through the Taiwan Strait, as Beijing keeps up pressure on the self-ruled island it claims as its own.

The ministry said it was monitoring the movements of the ships and will respond accordingly. In a tweet, the ministry said that the three vessels were headed north along the Taiwan Strait at noon and were steering along the west of the median line — an unofficial boundary once tacitly accepted by both sides.

China has stepped up its military activities around Taiwan in recent months amid deteriorating US-China ties. China claims Taiwan as its own territory to be brought under its control by force if necessary and regularly sends ships and warplanes into airspace and waters near the island.

The ministry also said that in the 24 hours from 6 am Friday to Saturday, it detected 33 of China’s People’s Liberation Army aircraft and 10 navy vessels around Taiwan.

Twelve of the aircraft had crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait or entered the island’s air defense identification zone.

In response, Taiwan’s armed forces deployed aircraft, navy vessels and land-based missile systems.

In April, the Chinese military said it was “ready to fight” after completing three days of large-scale combat exercises around Taiwan that simulated sealing off the island in response to Taiwanese President Tsai Ingwen’s trip to the US. Russia said on Thursday it was pushing ahead with the first deployment of such weapons outside its borders since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said the weapons were already on the move. Biden said on Friday he had an “extremely negative” reaction to repor ts that Russia has moved ahead with a plan to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. The

HONG KONG, MAY 27 (AP): One of the few remaining pro-democracy parties in Hong Kong voted to dissolve itself on Saturday, joining a growing list of organizations that have disbanded as authorities crack down on dissent.

Civic Party chairman Alan Leong told reporters that the dissolution of the party was a “writing on the wall” as there was no one to take over. None of its members at an extraordinary general meeting filed nominations for executive positions.

anjay Leela Bhansali’s Alia Bhatt-starrer ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ bagged three technical awards at the IIFA Rock night, which marked the beginning of the three-day 23rd edition of the International Indian Film Academy and Awards (IIFA) at Yas Island on Friday night.

The awards the film got were for Cinematography (Sudeep Chatterjee), Screenplay (Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Utkarshini Vashishtha), and Dialogue (Utkarshini Vashishtha and Prakash Kapadia). ‘Gangubai...’ was followed by Anees Bazmee’s horror comedy, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’, featuring Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani, which won two awards -- Choreography for Title Track (Bosco Caesar) and Sound Design (Mandar Kulkarni).

Ajay Devgn’s crime thriller ‘Drishyam 2’ received one award -- Editing (Sandeep Francis) -- as did Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s action adventure, ‘Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva’ (Special Effects-Visual, DNEG, Redefine); Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan’s ‘Vikram Vedha’ (Background Score, Sam CS); and ‘Monica O My Darling’, starring Rajkummar Rao, Huma Qureshi and Radhika Apte, for Sound Mixing (Gunjan A. Sah, Boloy Kumar Doloi, and Rahul Karpe). The awards were announced on an evening of memorable music performances by Amit Trivedi, Badshah, Sunidhi Chauhan, Sukhbir Singh, Palak Muchhal and Iulia Vantur Sobha, presented by choreographer and director Farah Khan and Rajkummar Rao.

The musical spectacle began with a dance performance by Palak Muchhal, followed by Farah Khan, who also danced her way onto the platform. Rajkummar Rao took the stage while playing the song ‘Main Hoon Na’, and the two recreated a scene from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ in which they both greeted the crowd and engaged in a witty conversation about friendship. Sunidhi Chauhan and Badshah, starring Jacqueline Fernandez, Rakul Preet Singh and Nora Fatehi, gave enthralling performances later in the evening. Amit Trivedi captivated the audience with his lovely voice while performing with Arun Kamat, Devendra Palse, Meghna Mishra and Yashita Sharma.

And then everyone began dancing to the dhols thanks to Sukhbir Singh and Iulia Vantur. The evening came to a thrilling conclusion with none other than Nucleya.

One of the key highlights of IIFA Rocks was a made-for-the-occasion collection showcased by Manish Malhotra, Bollywood’s favourite designer. It reflected “old world charm meets the new world” and had Salman Khan and Nora Fatehi as the showstoppers for the evening.

day after a video of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s security team pushing aside actor Vicky Kaushal went viral, the superstar was seen hugging Vicky at an IIFA event in Abu Dhabi. Both Salman Khan and Vicky Kaushal were seen wearing a formal and stylish black pants suit at the function. The two shared a warm hug and also interacted with each other for a moment.

Earlier, Vicky also reacted to the viral clip, saying: “A lot of times there is unnecessary chatter about things. There’s no point about it. Things don’t actually are as they seem in the video.”

He added: “There is no point in talking about that.”

In another viral video, Salman was seen enjoying the IIFA Rocks 2023 event

where he is seen enjoying singer Sukhbir’s live performance with his sister Arpita Khan Sharma.

bout 20 per cent or one in five adults considered healthy by medical standards, have glucose metabolism similar to those with prediabetes, finds an alarming study.

These healthy adults were identified using a new method of analysis, developed by scientists at Klick Health, a US based life sciences company, that flags a precursor to prediabetes called impaired glucose homeostasis (IGH).

In the study, published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Digital Health, the team stressed the need for intervention to stop these adults from becoming diabetic. “For people with diabetes, blood glucose levels can rise and fall like a wild roller-coaster ride with steep drops and peaks,” said Jaycee Kaufman, study lead author and research scientist at Klick Labs. “We found a similar pattern in patients with IGH, albeit those pat-

terns were more like gentle waves than dramatic peaks, but intervention on this population could limit the likelihood of progression to full diabetes,” she added.

A total of 384 people were equipped with a continuous glucose monitor for the study and assessed by a physician over a two-week time period. Participants were diagnosed diabetic, pre-diabetic, or healthy, according to guidelines outlined by the American Diabetes Association.

After applying the mathematical model, patients were then re-classified into two groups based on their glucose homeostasis parameters: effective or impaired. “What was most surprising is that 20 per cent of participants, who were assessed using the standard screening tools for diabetes and cleared as healthy by a physician, were then found to have impaired glucose homeostasis-reinforcing it

is now possible to provide an earlier, more accurate and sensitive assessment of people’s diabetic status,” said Yan Fossat, Vice President of Klick Labs.

With research suggesting it is possible to reverse diabetes, or at least slow its progression, there is growing demand for screening tools that can flag at-risk individuals. Screening and monitoring involve reviewing risk factors such as age, BMI, and family history; and diagnosis relies primarily on the blood tests like glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). “This new method of analysis is a major step forward in the prevention and management of diabetes,” Fossat said. “Early detection and intervention is critical in the management of Type 2 diabetes, so our method has the potential to have a significant impact on the lives of millions of people worldwide.” (IANS)

KUALA LUMPUR, MAY 27 (PTI): Star Indian shuttler HS Prannoy entered the men’s singles final of the Malaysia Masters after his opponent Christian Adinata of Indonesia conceded the semifinal match following a nasty knee injury here on Saturday.

India lose to Britain 2-4 in FIH Pro League Hockey

LONDON, MAY 27 (PTI): A lacklustre India suffered their second successive defeat in the European leg of the FIH Men’s Hockey Pro League, going down to dominant hosts Great Britain 2-4 here on Saturday.

Timothy Nurse struck a field goal for Great Britain in the sixth minute while Harmanpreet equalised for India from a penalty corner in the 13th minute.

Sorsby Thomas scored Britain’s second in the 31st minute, helping them regain the lead before Lee Morton came up with an excellent goal on the 33rd minute after catching the Indians napping.

Harmanpreet reduced the deficit for India with his second goal of the day -- this one too from a penalty corner -- in the 42nd minute, the strike helping him become the all-time top-scorer in the Pro League with 35 goals.

Jyothi Yarraji clocks 12.84 seconds to win Kurpfalz Gala CHENNAI, MAY 27 ( AGENCIES): 100m hurdler Jyothi Yarraji won at Kurpfalz Gala, a World Athletics Continental Tour-Challenger event at Weinheim, Germany, on Saturday with her career’s third sub-13 timing, registering a season-best 12.84s (+1.0m/s). It is the fastest time by an Asian this year, reports Sportstar.

This is now the Reliance Sports Foundation (RSF) athlete’s second-best effort after her national record of 12.82s, which had Jyothi Yarraji at the 61st National Open Athletics come at the 61st National Championship 2022.

Jyothi, who is the only Indian hurdler to go sub-13, first achieved the feat at the National Games 2022, where she had crossed the line in 12.79 seconds. However, the wind gauge at the IIT Gandhinagar stadium had registered a tailwind of 2.5 seconds. Only timings with a tailwind of less than 2.0 m/s are considered eligible for records. Sapna Kumari, the other Indian in the field and also from the RSF, came sixth, clocking 13.81s.

Day-6 : Senior men’s Inter-district tournament DIMAPUR, MAY 27 NPN): 1st Semi-final, Nagaland Cricket Stadium: Dimapur triumphed over Kohima by 3 wickets in a closely contested match.

After Kohima won the toss and opted to bat first, Imomenba Walling produced yet another exceptional batting performance as he scored 48 runs while his opening partner Hikato Aye also contributed 19 runs.

However, the remaining batsmen could not contribute much to the score as Dimapur bowled them all out in 39.3 overs with 135 runs on the board. Santosh Mahto and Raja Swarnkar took 3 wickets while Nagaho, Tahmeed and Hem claimed 1 wicket each.

Needing 136 for the win, Shamphri Terang (34 runs) and Hem Bahadur Chetri (57 runs) gave Dimapur the start required in the run chase however Sepichem displayed brilliance with the ball and scalped 4 wickets alongside Kelhousilie who also scalped 3 wickets.

Dimapur looked like they were in deep trouble when they required 27 runs in 118 balls with only 3 wickets remaining but Hoponkyu Sangtam who scored a vital 10 runs with Hem Bahadur Chetri secured the win for Dimapur to put them in the finals versus Niuland.

Man of the Match was awarded to Hem Bahadur Chetri for his 57 runs and 1 wicket.

2nd Semi-final After Chümoukedima won the toss and elected to bat first, Mughavi (16 runs) and Sedezhalie (12 runs) were the only batsmen who could manage double digits as the batting line up collapsed and managed to put up a paltry total of 69 runs all out in 27.3 overs.

In the run chase, Niuland felt the Semi-finals pressure as two quick wickets fell in just 3 runs in the form of Vishal Sahani 1 run and Wahid Ali for a nought. Both wickets were

claimed by the prodigy Khrievitso Kense.

However Afzal Hussain (40) runs and Hokaito Zhimomi (27) runs made sure no further damage was done and played sensibly to steer their team to an impressive win in just 21.5 overs and book a berth for the finals.

Man of the match was awarded to Vino G Zhimomi for his brilliant bowling figures of 5 wickets in 8.3 over with 1 Maiden over and conceding only 19 runs with an economy rate of 2.24. Finals of the Senior men’s Inter-district tournament between Niuland and Dimapur will be played on May 29 (Monday) at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium, Vilasier Khate and Fardeen Mohammad secured runners-up at the AITA Sovima.
