Mob storms house of MoS in Imphal

IMPHAL, MAY 26: Barely two days after a mob attacked the residence of PWD minister Konthoujam Govindas, another mob stormed the residence of Union Minister of State for external affairs RK Ranjan Singh at Kongba in Imphal East district at 8.30 p.m.

Thursday.

However, timely action by the police and security forces prevented the mob from vandalizing the residence of the Ranjan, police sources said.

Soon after receiving information, IGP Themthing Ngasangva Themthing and SP Imphal East rushed to the spot with additional forces and RAF to control the situation.

Meanwhile, curfew was relaxed in East and West Manipur from 5 am to 12 noon on May 26.

NBSE informs Hr. Sec. Schools D I M A P U R , M AY 2 6 (NPN): Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) has reminded higher secondary schools that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has brought changes regarding admission to BA (Economics) under Choice Based Credit System.

In a notification, NBSE chairman Asano Sekhose informed that under this new policy, students intending to go for BA Economics needed to have Mathematics as one of the subjects at higher secondary level. NBSE said that this policy would be adopted

by Nagaland University as well as other Universities across the country.

Therefore, NBSE has requested all heads of higher secondary schools offering economics as elective subject to take note of the changes and take necessary actions so that students desiring to study BA Economics honours in future were not deprived of the opportunity.

China faces a new Covid wave that could peak at 65 million cases a week

B E I J I N G , M AY 2 6 (AGENCIES): China is bracing for a new wave of Covid infections that could see as many as 65 million cases per week by the time the surge peaks at the end of June.

It’s a startling prediction in a country, where the pandemic originated in late 2019, that only months ago had enforced some of the harshest Covid control protocols on the planet.

Now, with the latest omi-

cron variant, XBB, fuelling a resurgence in cases, the response from China’s government and the public is muted at best.

The surge comes about six months after the country dismantled its sprawling infrastructure for dealing with Covid, including harsh lockdowns, mass testing, stifling quarantines and strict mask requirements.

The new wave’s data was revealed by respiratory disease specialist Zhong

Nanshan at a medical conference this week in southern city of Guangzhou.

According to state media, he told the audience that the wave that started in late April was “anticipated,” and that his modelling suggested China could be approaching 40 million infections per week. By the end of June, he said, the weekly number of infections will peak at 65 million.

The United States, by comparison, was reporting more than 5 million cases a week at its peak last January.

Though China’s current wave will not equal the “tsunami” of cases it experienced in December and January, older people and those with underlying diseases are still relatively under-vaccinated and are at high risk for developing severe disease, said Jin Dong-yan, a virologist at University of Hong Kong.

Nagaland logs 1 fresh Covid case

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 6 (NPN): Nagaland on Friday recorded one more case of Covid-19 pushing the total caseload to 36025.

According to health department bulletin, the fresh case was reported from Dimapur. With this, the state currently has six active cases. The death toll remained unchanged at 782 (including 5 non-Covid deaths but with positivity).

M e a n w h i l e, I n d i a logged 490 new coronavirus infections, while the active cases have decreased to 5,707 from 6,168, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Friday.

The death toll has increased to 5,31,856 with two deaths, the data updated at 8 am stated. The Covid case tally was recorded at 4.49 crore (4,49,88,916).

Highlighting their concern regarding implementation of ILP, the representatives of the non-Naga communities appealed for exemption of ILP in Dimapur.

They pointed out that though most of them had settled in Nagaland before and after statehood, many would have issues to prove their claims due to non-availability of proper documents.

In this regard, the members suggested to the government to put in place a different mechanism to keep check

on illegal immigrants instead of ILP. They further pointed out that implementing ILP in Dimapur would not only affect businessmen but also tourists or travellers, and as a result adversely impact the economy.

After patiently hearing the views shared by representatives of the non-Naga communities, sources privy to the meeting said that chief minister Neiphiu Rio had reportedly informed them that ILP would be implemented over entire Nagaland including Dimapur which was brought under the tribal belt in 1979.

Though ILP was not implemented in Dimapur due

to various reasons, the state government in 2019 extended the ILP to Dimapur following pressure from various civil society groups in view of the rising cases of illegal immigrants in Nagaland.

Taking note of the concerns raised by the non-Naga communities, Rio said that community verification committee would be formed by each community to verify and identify their people residing in Dimapur and accordingly prepare the data.

Based on the verified data, he said that relevant documents would be issued.

DIMAPUR, MAY 26 (NPN): While reaffirming its stand on Naga political solution, NSCN (I-M) cautioned that any Naga political group seeking political solution under the terms

of the Indian constitution would be repeating the past mistakes and tantamount to “violating the sanctity of God given Naga political rights.”

(I-M) through its MIP claimed that Article 371(A) or 16 Point Agreement of 1960, no longer bore any political meaning since the “historic Framework Agreement” (FA) signed on

SC rejects PIL for inauguration of new Parl building by President

NEW DELHI, MAY 26 (PTI): Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a PIL seeking direction to the Lok Sabha Secretariat for inauguration of the new Parliament building by President Droupadi Murmu.

A vacation bench of justices JK Maheshwari and PS Narasimha told petitioner in-person advocate Jaya Sukin that the court understands why and how the petition was filed and that it is not inclined to entertain the petition under Article 32 of the Constitution.

Article 32 gives individuals the right to approach the top court when they feel they have been

deprived of their fundamental rights. “What is your interest in filing this petition? We understand why you have come with such petitions. Sorry, we are not interested in entertaining this petition under Article 32 of the Constitution. Be grateful, we are not imposing costs,” the court told Sukin.

“It is not a function of the court to look into this,” Justice Narasimha said.

Sukin said under Article 79, the president is the executive head of the country and she should have been invited.

The bench told him the court understands Article 79 but how is it connected to inaugu-

ration of the building. Sukin then said if the court does not wish to entertain the petition, he be allowed to withdraw it.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, said if the petition is allowed to be withdrawn, it will be filed in the high court.

The bench then ordered, “After hearing the petitionerin-person for some time, we were not inclined to accept his submissions. Facing the said difficulty, the petitioner sought leave to withdraw this Writ Petition... The writ petition under Art 32 of the Constitution filed by the petitioner stands dismissed as withdrawn.”

Story behind cracking UPSC exam Staff Reporter

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 6 (NPN): Yimkum I Ozukum, who secured All-India Rank 203 (AIR 203) in the Civil Services Exam 2022 conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), advised civil service aspirants with the words: “work hard and study smartly”.

Hailing from Sungratsu village under Mokokchung district, 28-year old Yimkum is a resident of Dimapur. He did his early schooling from St Mary’s higher secondary school, then Higher Secondary at Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School.

He completed his civil engineering from Bits Pilani Rajasthan in 2017 and since had been preparing for NPSC and UPSC exams.

Yimkum has been serving as EAC for three years in Peren district before he cracked the UPSC in 2023.

In an exclusive interview to Nagaland Post here at Dimapur, Yimkum

revealed that his parents, teachers and seniors who had cracked the UPSC exams at college, were inspirational for motivating him to CSE. After graduation in 2017, Yimkum decided to study at home instead of enrolling at various coaching centres in other states, as he felt more comfortable with home environment surrounded by family, friends, relatives and well-wishers.

Yimkum also said that having good mindset, mental will power, realizing one’s capabilities and knowing oneself helped him a lot through his UPSC journey.

Plight of children with disabilities highlighted

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 6 (NPN): A workshop on “Rights of children with disabilities (CWDs) related to education” highlighted the various challenges and difficulties faced by CWDs and the need for the state government to take effective action on those issues.

The workshop organised by Prodigals’ Home and supported by Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (SCPWDs), Nagaland, Kohima was held at Tourist Lodge, Dimapur, Friday.

Delivering a keynote address, SCPWDs Nagaland, Diethono Nakhro lamented that CWDs was one of the most marginalised and excluded groups, and that there was “lack of data, not only in Nagaland, but everywhere”.

Pointing out that Nagaland state lacks data relating to disability, she said the state was still following 2011 Census data for disability and termed it as an “underestimated” data.

Speaking on inadequate inclusive schools in the state and the need for more inclusive schools,

Nakhro lamented that even some of the few inclusive schools were not imparting proper inclusive education, and alleged the CWDs were even made to sit separately.

Pointing out that the current school education system was not inclusive, she said it was time to change the system and make education more accessible and inclusive. “We may have the best policies, but it all comes down to implementation.

Best laws without implementing properly will be of no benefit”, said Nakhro.

She also expressed concern over CWDs dropping out of schools, and said children becoming conscious of their parent’s struggles combined with inaccessibil-

ity to facilities make it impossible for them to continue higher education. Speeches on the topic “Scenario of CWDs related to education” were delivered by joint secretary, NSDF Nagaland, Ngaugongbe and special educator, and headmistress, Bumblebee Inclusive School, Kohima, Kopele Tepa.

In his address, Ngaugongbe said education for PWDs and CWDs in the state was one of the biggest issues which the state government needed to pay more attention. Though state government had been making changes and assuring inclusive education, Ngaugongbe lamented that not enough attention was being given for appropriate in-

tervention. Dwelling on the challenges faced by CWDs whilst pursuing education in the state, he cited access to information and admission, lack of special education, teaching and learning materials, scholarships, building accessibilities, lack of consultation with trained professionals, resource rooms in each Educational Block Resource Centre (EBRC), training for in-service teachers in inclusive education, etc., as some of the challenges.

Ngaugongbe suggested making inclusive education as part of B.Ed and DIET syllabus, consulting PWDs stakeholders for reforms in educational system, training and institute to be set up separately for special

education degree or courses, and proper provisions and facilities for the PWDs. Quoting 2011 census, Kopele Tepa said there are 29,631 PWDs in Nagaland, around 1.5% of total state population, and highlighted the importance of creating awareness about PWDs in schools, workspace and community as a whole.

Despite “a lot of talks and efforts” on inclusion, Tepa said she fails to understand why inclusion has somehow remained an “exclusive idea”, and why PWDs were not included on the “idea and discussion on inclusion”?

“Inclusion is not about what people with disability want but about what they need. People with disabilities have to be included in the planning and solution,” said Tepa. She also underscored the need for more trained professionals and schools in the state to open doors for PwDs, create more opportunities to get existing teachers trained within the state and create job opportunities and avenues for PWDs. Speaking on rights of CWDs related to education (RPWD Act 2016 and NEP 2020), panel lawyer, Dimapur District Legal Service Authority

(DDLSA), Rokovitsu Khate said appropriate government and local authorities should ensure that all educational institutions funded or recognized by them provide inclusive education to CWDs. He also dwelled on specific measures to promote and facilitate inclusive education.

Speaking on inclusive education in Nagaland, deputy director, Department of School Education, Nellayappan B said the state has 35 special education teachers attached to EBRCs while admitting that it was “very less” for the entire state. He said Samagra Shiksha was also carrying out activities towards inclusive education and SCERT had been conducting training for teachers for special education. However, he admitted lack of follow-ups. The deputy director also briefed the gathering on Nagaland Education Project – The Lighthouse (NECTAR) Project.

Sub-Urban Police Station for investigation, informed PRO. During the course of investigation, PRO said upon conducting meticulous examination, some suspects were identified and placed under police surveillance.

On May 26, a team led by ACP West along with OC SBN PS, 2nd OC SBN PS and SBN PS team proceeded to Kohima and with the assistance of electronic surveillance and hu-

man intelligence, the team raided a house and arrested the two persons.

During the raid, police also recovered and seized one 9mm Berreta with 42 live rounds, Rs. 10,000 cash, 17 booklets of extortion slips, and other incriminating documents along with a vehicle (Alto K10 LXI) used in the commission of the crime. PRO informed that the arrested accused persons are in police custody at SBN PS.

DISHA meeting held in Mokokchung

DIMAPUR: A review meeting of District Development Co-ordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) under Mokokchung district was held under the chairmanship of Lok Sabha, Tokheho Yepthomi on May 23.

A DIPR report stated that Tokheho in his address thanked all the former and present elected members of the State for their effort and contributions in constructing the DC office building in Mokokchung. He asked all the departments in the district to judiciously and effectively implement the Central Schemes and all other

programmes/duties so that living standard of people especially the downtrodden in the society would be lifted.

DIMAPUR: With the primary objective to inspect the effective implementation of “Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)”, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) Ministry of Finances, government of India, joint secretary, Rahul Jain visited Zuneheboto from May 24-26.

According to a DIPR report, the joint secretary, accompanied by scientistC, CGWB ministry of Jal Shakti, Anenuo Pienyu, met the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Zunheboto and all the departments associated with “JJM”, on May 24 at the Conference Hall of DC Zunheboto.

At the meeting, a PowerPoint presentation on the status of the scheme was presented by the nodal officer and executive engineer water resource department. The joint secretary applauded the way “JJM”, was implemented and asserted the need to complete the project i.e., water connection to every household as soon as possible or as targeted by December 2023.

DIMAPUR: As part of the ongoing “stress awareness week” programme, a seminar for officers of Nagaland police was held Friday at PHQ, Kohima.

The seminar was conducted by the Carl Rogers Institute of Mental Health and School Counselling (CRIMH&SC) in collaboration with the Directorate of State and Family Welfare, National Mental Health Program, informed a press release by CRIMH&SC. Addressing the gathering at the seminar, Director General of Police (DGP) Nagaland, Rupin Sharma mentioned the need for assistance for the addiction and mental health issues in the Nagaland police

department.

“Bad experiences lead us to resort to unhealthy means to deal with stress”, said Sharma.

He suggested that the department also should come up with some recreation activities to help themselves de-stress.

Resource person, Dr. Viketoulie Pienyu said that the worries and anxieties of life has become more prevalent in this generation as an individual’s needs and wants has increased as compared to the past.

He identified restlessness, sleeplessness, irritability, concentration issues, headache, hypertension, diabetes, blood pressure, stroke, etc., as some of the symptoms of stress.

Dr. Pienyu said some of the common sources of stress in a workplace includes income inequality, transfers, prolonged separation from family and as a result of which many soldier resorts to substance use to relieve their stress.

Stating that progress at work and a good family life was the best way to buffer stress, Dr. Pienyu discouraged substance use for relaxation as it could become addictive.

He also spoke about how addiction effects the physical and psychological health.

I am deeply saddened on the passing away of my beloved Nephew, Khekaho Zhimomi.

He was a young upcoming freelance writer who was passionate about his work. I will always honour his dedicated work as my co-author of the book, “The World’s Youngest General” which was published in the year 2022.

He is no more with us but his passion, hardwork, dedication, integrity and discipline will always continue to inspire us.

I convey my heartfelt condolence to all his family members and loved ones.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

DIMAPUR: A two-day awareness programme on “sex education” was organised for the students of Government Middle School (GMS) Sangtamtilla Dimapur culminated on Friday at the school.

A press release by the school informed that the initiative was taken up for the necessary awareness

among the students and the parents on sex education and to give preventive measures on various sexual offenses on minors.

At the two-day programme, teacher Tajunglemla spoke on the issue of menstrual hygiene, puberty, adolescence, early marriage and child labour.

‘First 1000 days’ campaign Educentre School of Business organises workshop on GST in Kohima launched in Tuensang DIMAPUR: A workshop on Goods and Services Tax (GST) was organised by Educentre School of Business (ESB) Friday at the Department of Industries and Commerce (DoI&C) Kohima.

DIMAPUR: The launching programme of the “First 1000 Days” campaign under Health Mission was held at the Conference Hall of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Tuensang, Friday.

According to a DIPR report, speaking at the programme, Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC), Zerotso Kesiezie thanked the Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) department for organising such events which would benefit the people.

He stated that it was a significant issue that should be addressed immediately for the well-being of pregnant women and children of two

years of age.

Kesiezie said successful implementation of the programme requires all-round support from the medical and allied departments, churches, civil societies, and NGOs. During the programme, an introduction to the First 1000 Days, the importance of antenatal care and hospital delivery, and the convergence of village health sanitation and nutrition day, was delivered by DPO RCH Tuensang, Dr. Imtijungshi Aier.

District Hospital Tuensang, OBG, Dr. Nusangtemjen spoke on the care of pregnant mothers, the

importance of vaccination among children, and breastfeeding and early childhood development. Co-ordinator of Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY) Social Welfare Department, Tonen Chang, gave a detailed presentation on the PMVVY schemes and nutritional support during the first 1000 Days, while Beti Chang from Nagaland State Rural Livelihood Mission (NSRLM), Rural Development gave a presentation on SBCC through SHG institutions. The programme ended with a vote of thanks

by CMO Tuensang, Dr. Keveduyi Theyo.

He deliberated on topics such as “what taxes do Nagas have to pay”, “what taxes are exempted for the Naga people”, “how GST contributes to the development of the country” and “what are some of the main objectives to look at while paying Taxes”. ICAR-NRC on Mithun conducts training for VFA trainees DIMAPUR: A five-day hands-on training on Mithun Husbandry Practices for Veterinary Field Assistant (VFA) trainees from Veterinary Field Assistant Training Institute, Medziphema organised by Indian Council of Agricultural Research- National Research Centre (ICAR-NRC) on Mithun under the Institute Tribal Sub-Plan culminated Friday.

DIMAPUR: Assam Rifles has outrightly rejected the allegation by NSCN (Khango) that one of its member, a special card holder was intercepted at MVCP and subsequently arrested, blindfolded and took inside the outpost.

PRO defence in a press statement clarified that based on report on the movement of armed cadre from Cease Fire office of NSCN (Khango), Block-V Thillixu village to “carryout extortion from fish market”, a check post was established on May 21 at around 9 pm near Block-I, Thillixu by following all protocols. PRO alleged that the suspected individual who was riding a motorcycle, was stopped for checking due to suspicious movements but tried to es-

cape. On being caught, the cadre “behaved in an aggressive manner, using offensive language and tried to intimidate Assam Rifles soldiers on duty”, PRO claimed. Following which, the individual was searched and one 9 mm pistol with a magazine alongwith ten rounds were recovered. The cadre was in possession of “three fake duplicate coloured photocopies of Special cards issued

by Cease Fire Supervisory Board (Khango) Supervisor, Impyangpa Ao” and after due verification, the individual was “freed, immediately with strict warning, not to carry fake & duplicate photocopies of Special cards”, PRO alleged.

PRO said the allegations regarding interruption in shifting of cease fire office

on March 25 was “absolutely baseless as Assam Rifles itself ensured secured environment at Thilixu village in view of likely inter faction clashes with splinter group of Khango faction”.

PRO claimed that all cadres moved to new Cease Fire office at Block-V, Thilixu uninterrupted except “SS Brigadier Phueka who was wanted by Nagaland Police on his involvement in Lamhainamdi killings 2021”. It also claimed that he was absconding followed recovery of huge cache arms and ammunition from his residence on March 4, 2023.

PRO therefore said that the news, “published ex parte, based on a press release” was an attempt to malign the image of Dimapur battalion of Assam Rifles.

Souring democracy

R

eflecting an almost irreconcilable animosity among ruling and opposition parties, even the opening of the new Parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led to bitter exchanges nationwide that is only hurting the spirit of democracy.

On May 24, Congress and 18 other parties decided to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28. Together, these parties have 242 MPs in both the Houses of Parliament. The political parties have stated that they strongly object to prime minister Modi inaugurating the new Parliament building by himself and “completely sidelining” President Droupadi Murmu. The Opposition has argued that it is the President and not the Prime Minister who is the head of the Indian state, and also the head of the Parliament and therefore, ignoring the President of India was a violation of the letter and spirit of the Constitution. In a joint statement, the parties quoted Article 79 of the Constitution which states, “There shall be a Parliament for the Union which shall consist of the President and two houses to be known respectively as the Council of States and the House of the People.” The Opposition sought to remind the government that it is the President who “summons, prorogues and addresses” the Parliament. They said this clearly proved that Parliament cannot function without the President. However, the prime minister has decided to inaugurate the new Parliament building without her they said. They termed it as an undignified act that insults the high office of the President and undermines the spirit of inclusion which saw the nation celebrate its first woman adivasi President. India’s president is an indirectly elected, non-party executive with only ceremonial powers, but is considered the country’s first citizen and is the highest constitutional authority. “Prime Minister Modi’s decision to inaugurate the new parliament building by himself, completely sidelining President Murmu, is not only a grave insult but a direct assault on our democracy which demands a commensurate response,” the statement issued by the opposition parties said. Attempting to lend credence to their stand, the parties pointed out that the new building was constructed at “great expense” during a “once-ina-century” pandemic, with “no consultation with the people of India or MPs”. Further, they accused Modi of relentlessly hollowing out Parliament by disqualifying, suspending and muting Opposition members, and by passing several controversial legislations without any debate. The 19 parties lamented that when the soul of democracy has been sucked out from the parliament, they found no value in a new building and therefore decided collectively, to boycott the inauguration. The opposition parties had hoped the Biju Janata Dal(BJD) would make a stand since President Murmu , is a tribal from Odisha. The BJD concurred in principle with the stand of the opposition parties that the president of India is the head of the nation while parliament represents the 1.4 billion people; both the institutions are symbols of Indian democracy which draw authority from the constitution of India (over which the President is the head). However, BJP chose to attend the inaugural. There’s much to be pondered over the politics of confrontation that is tearing the spirit of democracy to shreds. When magnanimity is needed, it unfortunate, that instead of bringing all together, the new Parliament will begin on a bitter note.

Our thinking about prayer, whether right or wrong, is based on our own mental conception of it. The correct concept is to think of prayer as the breath in our lungs and the blood from our hearts. Our blood flows and our breathing continues “without ceasing”; we are not even conscious of it, but it never stops. And we are not always conscious of Jesus keeping us in perfect oneness with God, but if we are obeying Him, He always is.

Prayer is not an exercise, it is the life of the saint.

Beware of anything that stops the offering up of prayer. “Pray without ceasing…”— maintain the childlike habit of offering up prayer in your heart to God all the time.

Jesus never mentioned unanswered prayer.

He had the unlimited certainty of knowing that prayer is always answered. Do we have through the Spirit of God that inexpressible certainty that Jesus had about prayer, or do we think of the times when it seemed that God did not answer our prayer? Jesus said, “…everyone who asks receives…” (Matthew 7:8). Yet we say, “But…, but….” God answers prayer in the best way— not just sometimes, but every time. However, the evidence of the answer in the area we want it may not always immediately follow. Do we expect God to answer prayer?

The danger we have is that we want to water down what Jesus said to make it mean something that aligns with our common sense. But if it were only common sense, what He said would not even be worthwhile. The things Jesus taught about prayer are supernatural truths He reveals to us.

Dimapur city- the crying need!

he quality of life in Dimapur seems to be going downhill as each year progresses.

Dimapur which was a subdivision in Kohima district became a full fledged district in 1997 and comprised of Niuland, Chumukedima (Nichugard and prior to that Samaguting) and Dhansiripar sub-division.

In 2022, Dimapur was trifurcated and now there are three districts- DimapurChumukedima-Niuland.

While the wisdom of the Government cannot be questioned- one wonders whether it was necessary to trifurcate the commercial capital district of the state into three without properly demarcating the inter-district boundaries and jurisdiction of the District authorities/departments. Proper planning of the development of the two new districts of Niuland and Chumukedima will be extremely helpful and in fact be the pride of Nagaland, however, there are certain issues which are

required to be attended to on a war footing so that the commercial capital can continue to be a place where the people can continue to live with grace and pride on the one hand and trade and commerce can be smoothly conducted and Dimapur can continue to flourish. A few suggestions are made in this regard.

1. Traffic has to be managed properly. While it may not be possible to expand the span of the roads, flyovers at strategic locations is a must. Driving in Dimapur has become a nightmare, there is no proper parking spaces created within the city and people park on the already narrow road itself making it impossible to have a smooth flow of traffic. There is an absolute need for multistoried parking at strategic locations within the city, People would be more than willing to pay the required parking charges just to do shopping or to attend to official/ bank or other work.

or NSCN, spearheading the Naga political movement, the signing of 1997 IndoNaga Ceasefire and the starting of political talks as invited by the Government of India had huge political implications.

It was mean to make redundant the past political decisions and do away with factors extraneous to the IndoNaga political issue. Thus, Article 371(A) as inserted into the Part XXI of the Indian Constitution in the year 1962 or 16 Point Agreement of 1960, no longer bears any political meaning as the historic Framework Agreement signed between the Nagas as represented by NSCN and Government of India on 3rd August 2015 has come into existence to nullify all the past acts of injustice to the Nagas and bring new solution/agreement that is honorable and acceptable.

Framework Agreement was not signed in clandestine manner. It took as many as 13 years of tough negotiations after Government of India granted official recognition to the uniqueness of Naga history and situation in 2002.

The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi was so much carried away by such political achievement that he made the arrangement to make the world bear living witness to the signing of the Framework Agreement as the high profile signing ceremony was live-telecast worldwide.

Going further, he called up all top political leaders of different political parties to share with them that he has solved the longest insurgency issue in Southeast Asia.

But the irony is that Prime Minister Modi is still not around to implement his brainchild Framework Agreement even after more than seven years.

In response to the unpredictable situation as reflected by the attitude of the Government of India, indulging in delaying tactics under one pretext or the other, without any demonstrative commitment to implement what has been agreed upon at highest level, NSCN put on record to call for Naga National Assembly on 31st May, 2022 wherein a resolute stand was taken that it shall never deviate from the Naga National Principle at any cost and uphold and protect the unique history. This implies that under no circumstances the core issues of Naga National Flag and Constitution (Yehzabo) that symbolized the Naga National identity will be compromised in the name of Naga political solution. Significantly, the letter and spirit of the Framework Agreement is very sharp and clear.

The Framework Agreement says, “The government of India recognizes the unique history and position of the Nagas.”

By unique history, it means- the Nagas have the history of independence. The Nagas have neither been a part of Union of India nor that of Burma (Myanmar), nor any other powers by consent or by conquest.

Flag and constitution are constituent parts of sovereignty. There is no ambiguity about it.

Many right thinking citizens do make efforts to do social work and clean up but that is once in a while and certainly not enough to deal with this gigantic problem. Some plants that can convert the waste to energy or even fertilizers or road construction materials need to come up at the earliest. Indore is the cleanest city in India as it has efficient waste trearment plants.

Let us look to some of the cities in the World for inspiration. Hudson river,

New York, Sienne river in Paris, Thames in London, Nile in Cairo, Potomac in Washington, Brahmaputra in Guwahati , Dhansiri in Dimapur and the list goes on in most parts of the world. Civilisations have grown around the world either on the rivers or the sea. Unfortunately, Dhansiri happens to be amongst the most polluted small rivers in India as per national survey. We are getting so much from nature and the river but are we doing anything worthwhile to preserve it or conserve it ? proper conservation and treatment can change Dimapur and the adjoining areas and improve our lives tremendously.

4. D i m a p u r C i t y Centre : All important/ successful cities in the world have city centres or important points of meeting. When we travel around the World and visit various cities particularly those that are doing well, we come across city centres which are not only must see but

are like nerve centres and are part of the character of the city. Some examples are Times square, New York-Champs de elysee in Paris- Picadilly circus, London- La Rambla, Barcelona and so on so forth.

The Naga shopping Arcade was a well planned complex and would have made an excellent city centre but unfortunately it has not been maintained well and has become dilapidated however the main problem may be the so called allottees and perhaps some unions which have been formed and of course those dealing in questionable items.

It would require a very strong will of the Government to bring it in line. One important saying comes to mind “ better late than never “ which the Government of the day must remember.

orruption, in all its forms, has plagued societies throughout history. Whether it manifests as political bribery, embezzlement, or the abuse of power, corruption undermines the very fabric of society and hampers progress. However, an intriguing perspective emerges when we consider the correlation between the corruption of society and the corruption of the self. It is a thought-provoking notion that suggests that the rot in our communities is often a reflection of the moral decay within individuals.

At its core, society is composed of individuals who come together to form a collective. Each person brings their own set of values, beliefs, and ethical principles, which shape the norms and functioning of the community. When individuals within that society engage in corrupt practices, it erodes the moral fiber that holds the community together.

The corruption of the self refers to the internal moral deterioration that occurs when individuals abandon their values and succumb to unethical behavior. This can manifest in various ways, such as indulging in dishonesty, engaging in fraud, or exploiting others for personal gain. When individuals prioritize their self-interests over the common good, they contribute to a culture of corruption. A society riddled with corruption becomes a breeding ground for further

misconduct. As corrupt practices become more prevalent and accepted, they permeate every aspect of life, from political institutions to business transactions and even personal relationships. Trust erodes, and people become suspicious of one another, leading to a breakdown in social cohesion.

Moreover, the corruption of society and the self is a cyclical phenomenon. When corruption becomes ingrained in the social fabric, it influences the behavior and mindset of individuals. Growing up in a corrupt environment normalizes unethical practices, making it more likely for individuals to engage in similar behavior. The cycle continues as these individuals perpetuate corruption, passing it on to future generations Psychologically, the corruption of the self can be attributed to various factors.

Greed, the desire for power, and the fear of missing out on opportunities are all drivers of corrupt behavior. Additionally, societal pressures, lack of moral guidance, and a culture that glorifies wealth and success at any cost contribute to the erosion of ethical standards.

Addressing the corruption of society requires a multi-faceted approach that encompasses both systemic and individual changes. On a systemic level, governments, institutions, and regulatory bodies must implement robust measures to prevent and pun-

ish corruption. This includes strengthening anti-corruption laws, ensuring transparency and accountability, and fostering a culture of integrity.

However, true change begins at the individual level.

Each person must cultivate a strong moral compass and prioritize ethical behavior.

This involves self-reflection, questioning one’s own motivations, and making conscious choices that align with one’s values. Education and awareness campaigns play a crucial role in promoting ethical conduct and instilling a sense of responsibility and empathy in individuals. It is essential to recognize that combating corruption requires collective action. When individuals actively reject corrupt practices and hold themselves and others accountable, they contribute to the creation of a society that values integrity and fairness.

The corruption of society is intricately linked to the corruption of the self. The choices and actions of individuals shape the moral landscape of communities, either strengthening or weakening the social fabric. By acknowledging the connection between personal ethics and societal corruption, we can foster a culture that values integrity, honesty, and transparency. “To accommodate the landless PMAY-G beneficiaries, the state has taken the initiative to provide land to construct a cluster of PMAY-G houses. Simultaneous efforts are being undertaken to mobilise funds from different programmes and CSR to provide other facilities in the cluster,” Dass said.

He said seven clusters have been completed so far covering 99 beneficiaries and work in 19 clusters are going on, covering 838 beneficiaries, across 10 districts.

“Also, we have formulated a standard operating procedure for PMAY-G housing in tea garden areas.

So far, 81,638 beneficiaries have been covered under it,” the minister added.

He also said that the state government is planning a mass ‘griha pravesh’ ceremony for more than 2.5 lakh completed houses.

Over 3,400 masons have also been trained in the state to meet locally the demand for skilled manpower for constructing the PMAYG houses, he said.

“A regional conference of nine eastern region states will be held in Assam on June 2-3 to monitor the process of implementation of the scheme as well as to share best practices amongst the states,” Dass added.

GUWAHATI, MAY 26 (PTI): Over 18 lakh houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) have been sanctioned in Assam so far, with construction of more than 11 lakh houses completed, state Panchayat and Rural Development (P&RD) Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass said on Friday.

Addressing a press conference here, Dass said more than 19 lakh beneficiaries are covered under the PMAY-G in the state.

“Since the inception of the programme and in alignment with the objective of the programme, i.e ‘Housing for All’, Assam has sanctioned 18,30,400 PMAY-G houses.

“Of these, 11,63,417 houses have be completed, of which 7,59,163 were done during the last two years,” he said.

The Panchayat and Rural Development minister said the remaining are targeted to be completed by August 15 this year.

Since the fiscal 202223 till date, the state has incurred an expenditure of Rs 12,504.79 crore for implementation of the PMAY-G, Dass said.

He also said that the state government has so far provided land to 40,096 landless PMAY-G beneficiaries.

GUWAHATI, MAY 26 (IANS): A BJP leader has been arrested in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district for allegedly collecting Rs 9.52 crore from a number of people in the name of providing them government jobs, an official said on Friday.

Moon Ingtipi, a leader of the Kishan Morcha wing of the BJP, was arrested on Thursday. Following the arrest, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expelled her from her position as well as the party.

A senior police officer told IANS on Friday that they have received numerous complaints against her, and on the basis of an official complaint, they launched an investigation.

“We uncovered enough evidence to make an arrest.

The police team is looking into the situation more thoroughly,” said Karbi Anglong district’s Additional SP, Nayan Barman.

ITANAGAR, MAY 26 (PTI): The police recovered a stolen Buddhist holy book from an Arunachal Pradesh village after a nine-hour trek and four persons were arrested in connection with the theft.

A police officer said the holy book which was stolen from a monastery in Tawang district last month was recovered from a place in Luguthang village on Wednesday.

The four accused were arrested from Meragoh village on Monday for allegedly stealing the book from Luguthang monastery on April 29, the police officer said.

After receipt of a written complaint from one Tsering Chombey, the district police, led by Jang police station officer in-charge, Pema Wangchu, launched an investigation and arrested the four persons.

“During interrogation, they revealed that they had stolen the holy book (Ser Choi) from Luguthang Gonpa and had hidden it at a place near Luguthang village,” the police officer said.

A police team, accompanied by two of the accused persons, recovered the stolen book from Luguthang village after nine hours of trekking from Meragoh.

IMPHAL, MAY 26: Efforts are being made to hold peace talks with all sections of people, said Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Friday.

Addressing reporters at his secretariat, Singh informed that Union minister of state for home Nityanand Rai who is camping in the state has started holding meetings with different Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).

Rai will visit places like Kangpokpi, Churachandpur and Moreh to hold talks with the CSOs based in the areas, the chief minister said.

He informed that additional security forces had been brought into the state and security personnel consisting of CAPF, state police, Manipur Rifles, IRB and VDF had been deployed at 38 highly vulnerable areas.

NEW DELHI, MAY 26 (PTI): Gold prices declined Rs 160 to Rs 60,080 per 10 grams in the national capital on Friday amid weak global trends, according to HDFC Securities.

The precious metal had ended at Rs 60,240 per 10 grams in the previous trading session.

In the overseas market, gold was quoting lower at USD 1,953 per ounce, while silver was trading higher at USD 23.10 per ounce.

NEW DELHI, MAY 26 (IANS): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday told the Delhi High Court that its decision to withdraw Rs 2,000 notes from circulation is only a “currency management exercise and not demonetisation”.

The central bank defended its decision on a PIL filed by petitioner lawyer Rajneesh Bhaskar Gupta challenging RBI’s decision.

The PIL argued that it lacks the independent authority, as per the RBI Act, to make such a decision.

Appearing for the bank, Senior Advocate Parag P. Tripathi urged before the court that the matter be heard on a later date as the bench has already reserved its judgment in a similar PIL by petitioner lawyer Ashwini Upadhya.

“This is a currency management exercise and not demonetisation. The bench has earlier reserved judgment in a matter. I am suggesting that let that order come and we can have it after that. Most of what is being contented would have been dealt with it there. It is the pure nature of economic policy,” Tripathi said.

rupt practices. He suggested that relevant technology for road construction - as per the geographical and topographical conditions of the place - must be adopted to maintain the quality and longevity of the project and check cost escalation during construction.

SHILLONG, MAY 26 (PTI): At least 117 pigs have died in Meghalaya due to African Swine Fever, a top Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department official said.

About 50 pigs have died at a government farm in Dalu in the West Garo Hills district and another 5 died in another government farm in Pynursla in the East Khasi Hills district, the official said.

“At least 117 pigs have died in 4 districts of the state affecting 11 villages.

The deaths have occurred since last month and they tested positive for ASF,” Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department secretary Dr Manjunatha C told PTI. Another 40 pigs have died in eight villages in RiBhoi and 22 pigs reportedly died in Nongstoin town of West Khasi Hills district.

The veterinary department first reported the outbreak of ASF last month following which instructions were issued under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, banning slaughter, movement of pigs and supplies at the affected villages and within 10 km of its vicinity.

(PTI): The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Friday announced a month-long agitation against the state government’s decision to teach maths and science in English in vernacular medium schools from Class 6 onwards.

The series of agitation will culminate with a meeting of academicians and educationists on June 27 at Guwahati, All Assam Students’ Union president (in-charge) and secretary Utpal Sarma and Sankarjyoti Boruah said here.

“The decision of the government to teach maths and science in English from Class 6 is detrimental to the growth of Assamese, Bodo and other local languages.

We have been opposing it since it was announced last year.

“Now, we will launch a month-long agitation from May 27 to press for withdrawal of the decision,” they said.

Rather than taking such decisions, students in vernacular medium schools should be taught English properly so that they can be fluent in the

Students’ Union leaders maintained.

The series of agitations will start with a discussion with the teachers’ associations of the state on May 28.

It will be followed by a 10-hour fast by all ‘anchalik’ (regional) committees of All Assam Students’ Union on May 31 and a ‘gana satyagraha’ at Guwahati on June 6.

All the local committees will undertake a mass awareness drive regarding the government’s decision from June 8 to 14, followed by protest demonstrations at the district level on June 15 and a bicycle procession on June 24 in all the sub-divisions.

The stir will end with a meeting of academicians on June 27 in Guwahati.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, at a review meeting of the Education department in July last year, had directed for the introduction of English as a medium of instruction for science and maths from Class 6 till Class 12, along with the continuation of the teaching of both subjects in the Assamese language.

ITANAGAR, MAY 26 (IANS): An ambitious 1,748-km-long Frontier Highway would be constructed linking West Kameng district in western Arunachal Pradesh and with Changlang district in the eastern region of the state, bordering China, Myanmar and Bhutan.

A top engineer of the Highways (PWD) department of Arunachal Pradesh government on Thursday said that the 1,811-km-long Trans Arunachal Highway is near completion, and the focus now is on the Frontier Highway and inter-connectivity corridor projects, which were recently approved by the Centre.

He said that the Frontier Highway is proposed to begin from Bomdila in West Kameng (bordering China and Bhutan) and end at Vijaynagar in Changlang (bordering Myanmar), covering a distance of 1,748 km.

Man booked for raping minor girl in Goa

PA N A J I , M A Y 2 6 (IANS): A 28-year-old man has been booked by Goa police for allegedly raping a minor girl and impreganting her in South Goa district. Police told IANS that the mother of the victim has filed a complaint stating that the accused person raped her daughter, because of which, she became pregnant. The accused individual is identified as Rahul Chandra from West Bengal. “He is working in Goa. But presently he is absconding. We are looking out for him,” police said.

AMARAVATI, MAY 26 (PTI): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Friday kicked off a week-long programme to distribute housing plots for 50,793 eligible poor women at Venkatapalem village in Guntur district within Amaravati area.

Besides the housing plots, the Chief Minister has also launched the programmme to hand over Andhra Pradesh Township And Infrastructure Development Corporation (APTIDCO) houses to 5,024 beneficiaries which were constructed at a cost

of Rs 444 crore in the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) region.

For the land given to the poor, documents for plots worth up to Rs 10 lakh will be given away, including photographing and geo-tagging each of the beneficiary in her own plot, spread across 25 layouts and 1,400 acres located in Tadikonda and Mangalagiri Assembly constituencies.

These plots created by the government amending the CRDA Act to facilitate allotment of house sites for the poor.

“This festival of distributing lands to 50,000

families is a legendary moment in the history of the state as well as the country as the state government took up a long legal fight to give land to the poor by even going up to the Supreme Court. We are witnessing this moment right here in Amaravati,” Reddy said.

In a symbolic gesture, he distributed the documents for a few women.

Addressing a large gathering, the Chief Minister alleged that many opponents, especially opposition TDP-backed farmers had attempted to derail this endeavour legally but failed.

Terming the pattas (land deeds) not just as

mere land documents, the Chief Minister said they are also “social justice documents”, adding that from today Amaravati will be a “social Amaravati”.

Besides giving documents, he said the steps to initiate building houses in the 25 layouts under three options for the beneficiaries to choose from will also begin during this week.

According to the Chief Minister, the state government will spend Rs 2,000 crore to construct the houses and provide infrastructure, benefitting 23,762 women who received plots in 11 layouts in Guntur district and 27,031 from 14 layouts in NTR district.

Forged documents: UPSC considering criminal action NEW DELHI, MAY 26 (PTI): The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is considering criminal and disciplinary penal action against two candidates for allegedly claiming selection in the civil services examination, the results of which were declared on Tuesday, according to an official statement.

The case relates to Ayasha Makrani (from Madhya Pradesh) and Tushar (from Bihar) who fraudulently claimed that they have been finally recommended by the Commission in the civil services examination 2022 against two roll numbers of genuinely recommended candidates, it said. “The claims of both persons are fake. They have forged the documents in their favour to buttress their claims,” said the statement issued on Friday. By doing so, both

NEW DELHI, MAY 26 (IANS): A total of 45.6 per cent respondents of a survey are of the opinion that the BJP-led Central government’s nine-year rule has not been marked by efficient and leakage-free welfare schemes.

However, 44.9 per cent respondents feel that the welfare schemes were provided efficiently and in a leakage-free manner, while 9.5 per cent said that they cannot say anything.

This was disclosed during an exclusive pan-India survey conducted by CVoter to mark nine years of the BJP-led government. Narendra Modi was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India on May 26, 2014 after he led the BJP to a historic majority of 282 seats in the Lok Sabha elections.

According to the survey, 46.2 per cent people from the rural areas, and 44.3 per cent from the urban areas also

feel that the welfare schemes were not provided efficiently and in a leakage-free manner under the Modi regime in the last nine years.

The survey also claimed that 45.6 per cent women and 44.2 per cent men feel that the welfare schemes have been provided efficiently, whereas 46.6 per cent men and 44.5 per cent women felt the opposite. Maximum people in the 25 to 34 age group -- 52.8 per cent -- feel that the welfare schemes were not provided efficiently and in a leakage-free manner by the Modi government in the last nine year, while 51.1 per cent people in the 18 to 24 age group also feel the same.

Even 50.2 per cent people from the middle income group, and 43.1 per cent from the lower income group felt that the welfare schemes were not provided efficiently and in leakage-free manner under the Modi regime in the last nine years.

NIA seeks death penalty for Yasin Malik

NEW DELHI, MAY 26 (PTI): The NIA Friday approached the Delhi High Court seeking death penalty for terrorist Yasin Malik, who was sentenced a life term by a trial court here in a terror funding case a year ago, asserting not giving capital punishment to such a “dreaded terrorist” will result in a miscarriage of justice.

The plea by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been listed for hearing on May 29 before a bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Talwant Singh.

The trial court’s conclusion that Malik’s crimes did not fall within the category of the “rarest of the rare cases” for grant of death penalty is “ex-facie legally flawed and completely unsustainable”, the anti-terror probe agency said.

Gold worth around Rs 3 crore seized

BA N G AO N ( W B ) , MAY 26 (PTI): Gold worth around Rs 3 crore was seized along the international border in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district while being smuggled from Bangladesh, BSF said on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at the Petrapole border seized 36 gold biscuits weighing a total of 4.8 kg from an empty truck coming from the neighbouring country.

JAIPUR, MAY 26 (PTI) :A passenger was detained at the Jaipur International Airport for allegedly smuggling gold paste valued at over Rs 70 lakh, officials said on Friday.

The passenger was intercepted by officials after his arrival from Sharjah, UAE on an AirArabia flight.

They said that a total of 1,144 grams of smuggled gold paste with an estimated value of Rs 70.69 lakh was seized from him, adding that the paste was hidden in his shoes and innerwear.

HYDERABAD, MAY 26 (AGENCIES): The Chief Ministers of at least four States including Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao have decided to skip the eighth Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog to be held in Delhi on Saturday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the meeting being organised on the theme of ‘Viksit Bharat @ 2047: Role of Team India’. While the Prime Minister is the chairman of the Governing Council, with all the Chief Ministers, the Lieutenant Governors of the union Territories, and several union Ministers as members, The eighth Governing Council Meeting is aimed at creating a roadmap for Viksit Bharat, the new poll slogan of the BJP-led union government, by 2047.

less’, had last attended the Governing Council meeting in 2018.

School job scam: SC refuses to stay ED, CBI probe against Abhishek Banerjee NEW DELHI, MAY 26 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Friday declined to stay the Calcutta High Court’s direction allowing the ED and CBI to probe Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the multicrore recruitment case in state-run schools of West Bengal.

A bench comprising Justices J.K. Maheshwari and P.S. Narasimha said that as far as an investigation is concerned, the court is not inclined to interfere.

However, the bench stayed the high court’s order imposing a Rs 25 lakh cost on the party’s national General Secretary.

Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, representing the ED, submitted that the high court order only said that investigate if you want and independently of that order, the probe agency has power of investigation.

NAG P U R , M AY 2 6 (PTI): A 25-year-old woman from Nagpur in Maharashtra was cheated of Rs 5.17 lakh by online fraudsters who asked her to click on a link as part of the recruitment process in a Dubai-based firm, a police official said on Friday.

The unidentified persons first made her appear for an online exam and then sought a bank transfer of Rs 1,500 for profile verification, the official said.

PRISTINA, MAY 26 (AP): Serbia put its troops on the border with Kosovo on the highest state of alert Friday following clashes between ethnic Serbs and Kosovo police that left more than a dozen injured on both sides.

The Serbs in northern Kosovo, who represent a majority in that region, were trying to block the entrance of municipal buildings to prevent recently-elected ethnic Albanian officials from entering them. Police fired tear gas and several cars were set ablaze. In response to the clashes, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that he put the army on a “highest state of alert.” Vucic also said that he ordered an “urgent” movement of Serbian troops closer to the borderline with Kosovo.

ISLAMABAD, MAY 26 (AP): Two top rights groups on Friday slammed the severe restrictions imposed on women and girls by the Taliban in Afghanistan as gender-based persecution, which is a crime against humanity.

In a new report, Amnesty International and the International Commission for Jurists, or ICJ, underscored how the Taliban crackdown on Afghan women’s rights, coupled with “imprisonment, enforced disappearance, torture and other ill-treatment,” could constitute gender persecution under the International Criminal Court.

The report by Amnesty and ICJ, titled, “The Taliban’s war on women: The crime against humanity of gender persecution in Afghanistan,” cited the ICC statute, which lists gender-based persecution as a crime against humanity.

YouTube to shut ‘Stories’ feature next month

oogle-owned YouTube has announced that it will be shutting down ‘YouTube Stories’ on June 26 as the company aims to focus on other essential areas, like Shorts, Community posts, live videos etc.

“Starting on June 26, 2023 the option to create a new YouTube Story will no longer be available. Stories that are already live on that date will expire seven days after they were originally shared,” YouTube said in a blogpost on Thursday. In addition, the company said that the Creators will be notified of the shutdown via a variety of channels, including forum posts, in-app messages, reminders in YouTube Studio, and more. While Stories are going away, the Google-owned video platform suggested that both “Community posts and

YouTube Shorts are great alternatives that can deliver valuable audience connections and conversations”. For creators who want to share lightweight updates, start conversations, or promote their YouTube content to their audience, YouTube Community posts could be a great option, according to the company. Moreover, the company said that YouTube Shorts is the way to go if users want to create short video content or reach a new audience, as amongst creators who use both Shorts and Stories, Shorts on average drive many times more subscribers than Stories. Meanwhile, Google has clarified that it will not delete accounts with YouTube videos, after announcing that it will delete personal accounts and their content that haven’t been used or signed in for at least two years.

NEW DELHI, MAY 26 (IANS): Anwesha Gowda, Anupama Upadhyaya and Unnati Hooda will be favourites to take their spots in the selection trials for the highly-anticipated Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2023 at the Karnail Singh Stadium here from June 4-7. The Badminton Association of India (BAI) will be conducting the selection trials to pick the Indian team for the tournament.

One of Asia’s most prestigious junior badminton tournaments, which is scheduled in Yogyakarta, Indonesia from July 7-16, provides a remarkable platform for young talents to showcase their skills and compete against the best players from across the continent, the BAI informed in a release. Playing the first match at Nagaland Cricket Stadium, Chümoukedima defeated Peren by 58 runs to book its slot in the semi-finals.

Sent in to bat first by Peren, Chümoukedima’s Keniezetuo Rio (16), Mughavi Sumi (26), Sedezhalie Rupreo (46 not out) and Imliwati (22) finely contributed to pose 148 runs on the board in a 20 overs reduced match.

OM Sangma was the pick of Peren bowlers as he took 3 wickets while Bamyibe Npanme and Poiring picked up 1 wicket each.

Peren came in for the run chase with an approachable attitude for a win but

bowling attack from Chümoukedima restricted their brave efforts and could not build any partnerships and managed to muster only 90 runs losing 7 wickets in 20 overs. Imliwati and Keduowhetuo picked up 2 wickets each while Mhalevor, Khrievitso and Aniezo took 1 wicket each for Chümoukedima.

NEW DELHI, MAY 26 (PTI): Vinesh Phogat on Friday said if WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh attends the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28, it will send a clear message about the state of affairs in the country.

Top wrestlers including Vinesh and Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, have been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar in Delhi since April 23, demanding Singh’s arrest for allegedly sexually harassing seven women grapplers, including a minor.

As part of their fight against Singh, the protesting wrestlers will now hold a women’s Mahapanchayat before the new Parliament building on Sunday, the day of its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“If Brij Bhushan is there at the new Parliament on May 28, then the whole country will automatically get the message,” Vinesh said when asked what kind of message it will convey if WFI chief is present during

“Whosoever is trying to save Brij Bhushan, is against us. I don’t know what is happening internally in the government but someone is trying to shield him and it is not right, he is harming the women of this country.” Asked if it is a demand of the wrestlers to not allow Singh to attend the inauguration of the new Parliament building, Vinesh tried to make her point with an example.

“When a letter was issued against me for indiscipline after Tokyo Olympics and on the basis of that, if he can stop me from meeting the Prime Minister, can

get my name removed from the list, then just imagine, there are so many allegations against him.

“Even after all that if he attends the Parliament on Sunday then you can understand where the country is heading.”

The protesting wrestlers are, however, yet to get permission from the Delhi Police for the Mahapanchayat. “Why won’t we get permission. We are the citizens of this country and if police stops us then I would request all to just sit there and start the panchayat,” Bajrang said.

Asked how can they proceed with the Mahapanchayat if they don’t get the permission, Vinesh said: “Law is for the people. I know there is an event of PM but who will give justice to the daughters of this country? “If people like Brij Bhushan sit in the Parliament, then definitely our seniors will be angry but we are not going inside Parliament. We will do everything in a peaceful manner.”

MENDOZA (ARGENTINA), MAY 26 (IANS): The Gambia overcame France 2-1 in the Group F match of the FIFA U20 World Cup to reach the last 16 with a game to spare, leaving their illustrious opponents on the cusp of elimination, here at Malvinas Argentinas Stadium on Thursday night.

Gambia stood strong on top of Group F with six points after two wins in two games, followed by Korea in second place with

four points, while France is rooted at the bottom with no win under their belts.

Gambia and Korea will square off in their last group-stage match on May 29 to decide the table topper of Group F. Gambia raced in front when Adama Bojang’s shot ricocheted off goalkeeper Yann Lienard and went in off defender Tanguy Zoukrou.
