Cyclone Sitrang leaves a trail of destruction

DIMAPUR/IMPHAL/ SHILLONG, OCT 25 (NPN): Cyclone Sitrang that made landfall on Monday is said to spared India and hit Bangladesh, but the effects of the cyclone were felt in several Northeast states leaving behind a trail of destruction and even leading to loss of lives.

At least 35 people were killed and several homes destroyed as cyclone Sitrang ravaged Bangladesh’s southern coastlines and central parts after it made a landfall overnight, according to officials and media reports.

Meanwhile, Nagaland witnessed incessant rainfall as a result of the impact of cyclone Sitrang while Kiphire district was one of the worst affected.

TKM closes down schools, EBRC DIMAPUR, OCT 25 (NPN): Following the expiry of 15-day ultimatum served on the school education department on October 10, 2022, the Tzürangkong Kaketshir Mungdang (TKM) under Mangkolemba sub-division, Mokokchung on Tuesday closed down all the schools and Educational Block Resource Centre (EBRC) for an indefinite period or until their demands were met.

In a press release, TKM president Imlisunep informed that the decision for closure was taken after the department failed to respond to the union’s demand for deployment of appropriate number of teachers in schools under their range.

TKM has cautioned that the mode of protest could be “altered” if no positive response was given by the department.

Reports said that two women were missing in Ukhrul district after they were swept by the current of a stream they were crossing amid strong current triggered by continuous heavy downpour Monday evening. Soon after the news spread, villagers swung into action to rescue them. But, due to heavy downpour and strong water current, the victims could not be traced till Tuesday.

LONDON, OCT 25 (PTI/ AGENCIES): Rishi Sunak on Tuesday took charge as Britain’s first Indian-origin Prime Minister with a promise to fix recent “mistakes” after an audience with King Charles III, a day after he was elected the new leader of the Conservative Party in a historic leadership run.

The 42-year-old investment banker-turned politician is the youngest British prime minister in 210 years.

He is also Britain’s first Hindu Prime Minister.

A string of members of Liz Truss’s team of ministers were asked to step down as a precursor to the announcement of his new cabinet.

NSCN (I-M) rebuts SCAN charge on encroaching Ntangki NIDA serves 48-hr ultimatum on DIMAPUR, OCT 25 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) has refuted “the misleading statement” made by Senior Citizen Association of Nagaland (SCAN) that it has encroached Ntangki National Park and put it under its full control.

NSCN (I-M) reiterated that matters of national interest cannot be allowed to escape public scrutiny if there is suspicion that something has gone wrong. NSCN(I-M) through its MIP said for the same reason, “no bewildering allegations will stand the test of time”, when the factual story unfolds.

Given the magnitude of the issue, NSNC (I-M) said SCAN should have acted in a

more responsible manner and not make such highly inflammatory allegations.

NSCN(I-M) said SCAN should have been chosen a path that reflected wisdom and temperament on the issue instead of crying foul against it that was bereft of valid justification.

On the contrary, it said, had it not been the countermeasures taken by it, the national park could have been another story today.

Seeking to put the record straight, NSCN (I-M), said Ntangki National Park originally belonged to Old Bisumpui village with well-defined boundaries. It also pointed out that the critical need to protect Ntangki

forest and wildlife was taken up at NSCN National Assembly, Gilgal Camp, in 1996 where it was resolved to protect and preserve the forest as wildlife reserved forest. Accordingly, no newly set-up village was allowed to exist inside the national park.

NSCN(I-M) said that “during the course of Indo-Naga political talks”, the national park was never a topic of discussion since it had nothing to do with Naga political settlement.

It said whether or not there was solution, the park would remain protected and preserved as Naga national property.

It also cited the recent interview of Ntangki National Park director T Aochuba,

where there has been no indication that it there has been any encroachment on the national park.

Significantly, it said Hebron was outside the boundaries of Ntangki National Park.

NSCN (I-M) also clarified that Hebron originally belonged to Old Jalukie village, while Jalukiekam village was established with the permission of Old Jalukie village, and a recognised village with specific boundaries. It said Hebron camp was very much within the Jalukiekam village jurisdiction and outside the boundary of Ntangki National Park and not as “recklessly claimed by SCAN”.

KOHIMA, OCT 25 (NPN): Nagaland In-service Doctor’s Association (NIDA) has served a 48-hour ultimatum starting midnight of October 25, on the state government to positively respond to its demand for enhancement of superannuation from 60 to 62.

NIDA president Dr. Bernard Amer and general secretary Dr. Nitovi Shikhu, in the ultimatum addressed to the state chief secretary, secretary health and family welfare and principal director health and family welfare, stated that NIDA has not received any response from the state government over its representation dated August 1, 2022. NIDA said it had submitted

the representation in connection to demand of “62 years of Superannuation for all doctors without any condition or criteria”. NIDA said that it has, therefore, decided to serve another 48 hours to the government for a positive response.

NIDA warned that in the event of failure on the part of government to respond to the demand within the given period, it has decided to start indefinite cease work except emergency and life-saving service. NIDA said the state government would be solely held responsible for any untoward incident occurring during the agitation. NIDA also said it would be compelled to intensify its agitation, depending on the response from the government.

DIMAPUR, OCT 25 (NPN): In view of President of India Droupadi Murmu’s proposed two-day visit to Nagaland (November 2 and 3), chief secretary J Alam has asked all AHoDS and HoDs to be in station.

In this regard, Alam said that suitable instructions may also be issued to all officers/staff including those posted in the directorates and districts. Further, he said leave to any government employee is to be avoided as far as practicable with immediate effect till November 7.

Meanwhile, teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined the village in the rescue operation today afternoon. On the other hand, strong winds accompanied by heavy rain battered many parts of Tamenglong, Noney and Senapati districts of the state, causing widespread damage. The strong winds that lashed on Monday night damaged houses, uprooted trees, and broken electric polls and damaged crops, reports said.

As many as 20 houses were damaged partially after the roofs were blown away by the strong wind in Tamei sub-division of Tamenglong district. Roofs of many houses were also damaged in Tamenglong district headquarters, reports said. There were reports of causing widespread damage to the houses, structures and ready to harvest paddy crops and other crops in Noney districts also.

KOHIMA, OCT 25 (NPN): Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Nagaland state unit has blamed the absence of a strong opposition in the state for ceding space for rampant corruption at all levels.

This was stated by State NCP unit president Vanthungo Odyuo, while speaking at the state party executive meeting held in Kohima on Tuesday.

Odyuo said that Nagaland was under “undeclared financial emergency” be-

cause there was “no strong opposition to bring them to accountability”. He said Nagas were “all confused in party politics with no clear vision” and that “we are all a part of this confusion, as we are all a part of the society.”

Odyuo admitted that every individual shared equal responsibility for not being able to stand up to the occasion in challenging those at the helm of state’s affairs and governance. He urged upon party workers to believe in the NCP national and state leaders, who were “very keen to play a major role in Nagaland political arena.”

‘no pay no work’ agitation

DIMAPUR, OCT 25 (NPN): Dimapur Municipal Council Employees Welfare Union (DMCEWU), has decided to begin “no pay no work” agitation starting October 25, 2022 till the government fulfilled its demand. The DMCEWU said the proposed agitation against non-payment of salaries was earlier was put on hold due to several request and appeal made by civil society groups and DMC administrator on behalf of the government.

DMCEWU president T Revo Anar informed that the decision to begin agitation was taken at an emergency executive body meeting on October 21, 2022 held in DMC Office premises.

DMCEWU however, said the government failed to fulfil its demand and therefore, the house after deliberation, decided to go ahead with the agitation as decided at the previous meeting minutes October 7, 2022.

DIMAPUR, OCT 25 (NPN): Combined Technical Association of Nagaland (CTAN) Tuesday has reiterated that it will not accept the “illogical demands” of the All Nagaland Junior Engineer’s Association (ANJEA) and Power Department Junior Engineer’s Service Association (PDJESA) for 70% through promotion and 30% through NPSC. CTAN through its media cell said it has appealed to the authority not to accept and entertain the representation dated February 18, 2022 and June 8, 2022 submitted to the principal secretary department of power and the chief secretary by PDJESA and ANJEA. CTAN pointed out that there was an existing Engineer-

ing Service Rule 7, 2012 (Group A and B) Section 6, which stated that “60% of post of SDO/Asst.

Engineer/Asst. Architect should be filled through NPSC and 40% through promotions from lower grade”, which has to be retained.

CTAN said a number of engineering graduates were passing out from different universities each year in hundreds and there were currently over 5200 registered qualified engineers seeking to sit for exams.

In the light of the above, CTAN appealed to the responsible authority to take wise decision and not to entertain “any such selfish demands” in the interest and welfare of the educated engineers.

Informing this to Nagaland Post, deputy commissioner (DC) Dimapur Sachin Jaiswal said the operation was carried out within the five-day time frame and that restriction of vehicular movement from Old Dhansiri bridge till Nagarjan police point has been relaxed.

On the beautification of the area, he clarified that the particular NGO was not chosen by the Forest department but that the recommendation was given by the Development Authority of Nagaland (DAN) since the area was under DAN. According to Vivika, a collective decision was also taken during the Dimapur District Planning Board (DDPB) meeting and accordingly the order was also passed.

Vivika also admitted that he was unaware about the project presented by two environmentalists since he was not part of the DPDB meeting.

DIMAPUR, OCT 25 (NPN): Despite inclement weather, several hundreds, mainly womenfolk, in their traditional attire took part in the public rally organized by the Eastern Nagaland Women’s Organisation (ENWO) Tuesday at Parade Ground Tuensang in support of ENPO’s August 26, 2022 resolution for a separate ‘Frontier Nagaland’ state.

During the rally, all educational institutions and business establishments remained closed. Leaders of various organizations including ENPO and ENSF attended the rally. Womenfolk were seen with placards that read “Frontier Nagaland first,

election second”, “Our demand for Frontier Nagaland is politically and historically legitimate”, “Oppression since birth of statehood” etc.

ENWO president A. Shamthai Phom and media secretary M. Chongthen had said that the decision to hold the public rally was made during the consultative meeting held with all seven tribal federating units at Tuensang HQ on October 13.

According to an ENWO member, president Shamthai in her address reaffirmed the resolution adopted by ENPO on August 26, 2022 “not to take part in any election process of the central and state

until and unless a separate statehood- (Frontier Nagaland)- is granted by the Government of India, as demanded by the people of Eastern Nagaland under the aegis of ENPO.” She also highlighted about the longstanding demand of people of Eastern Nagaland asserting that it was a legitimate demand.

Shamthai reminded that it was a public movement and a legitimate demand to have a separate ‘Frontier Nagaland’ state. ENWO said people of Eastern Nagaland had been lagging behind in all spheres, particularly socio-economic development.

North East lags in job creation: Official

NEW DELHI, OCT 25 ( PTI): Despite the central government more than doubling budgetary support in the last eight years, the northeast region has lagged behind in economic output and job creation, an NEC official said here on Tuesday. Lakhs of youth from the region are going to other parts of the country for jobs, which implies that “something is amiss in terms of economic development”, North Eastern Council Secretary K Moses Chalai said.

In 2013-14, the total 10 per cent GBS (gross budgetary support) was around Rs 34,000 crore. This financial year, it has reached Rs 76,000 crore. “Despite this, the production and distribution of goods and services are not happening enough and there are not enough jobs, Chalai said, while speaking at a function at the North Eastern Hill University here.

Fifty-five central ministries and departments are mandated to spend at least 10 per cent of their gross budgetary support (GBS) for the central sector and centrally sponsored schemes in the northeastern region to accelerate the pace of development. Chalai, who has recently been appointed as chairman of the inter-ministerial committee for development of border areas in the region, said that the north-east is today surrounded by the world’s fastest developing economies, including Bangladesh.

Ghy beautification gets top priority GUWAHATI, OCT 25 (PTI): The Assam government is giving priority to the beautification of Guwahati city as it is a crucial link between India and South East Asia, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said here on Tuesday.

The chief minister visited the site of the old Deputy Commissioner’s office at Panbazar and inspected the ongoing work on the proposed Brahmaputra riverfront beautification project.

“We’ve prioritised beautification of the historic city of Guwahati, which isn’t only the Gateway to NE but also a crucial link

The chief minister also directed officials and the construction firm to ensure the timely completion of the project without compromising on quality.

Arunachal Students bodies call for bandh call on Nov 2 ITANAGAR, OCT 25 (AGENCIES): Arunachal Student unions All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) and All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) have called a 12hour bandh in Arunachal Pradesh on November 2 over the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) paper leak case despite government’s decision to replace and suspend officials of APPSC along with a dozen of arrests made with regards to the case, reports India Today NE. AAPSU and ANSU have also maintained that unless all incumbent members and remaining officials of APPSC are removed, the Unions won’t roll back their bandh call. The Unions have also demanded that the report of the SIC investigation and the three member enquiry committee should be made public. In a major development, the APPSC chairman, Nipo Nabam, on October 14 resigned amid the ongoing investigation into the paper leak case.

‘Miya’ museum in PMAY allotted house sealed in Assam GOALPARA, OCT 25 (PTI): The ‘Miya Museum’, set up in a house allotted under PMAY, in Assam’s Goalpara district was sealed and its owner was taken into custody on Tuesday a district official said.

The museum was opened to the public on Sunday. The president of the Mia Assam Miya Parishad, Mohor Ali set up the museum on the premises of the house allotted to him under the Prime Minister’s Awas Yojana. A team of government officers sealed the museum at Dapkabhita under Lakhiur police station and put up a notice that it has been done on the orders of the deputy commissioner.

The opening of the Museum in a house allotted under the Prime Minister’s Awas Yojana led to a controversy with senior BJP leaders demanding its immediate closure.

BJP Minority Morcha member Abdur Rahim Gibran had filed a complaint against the setting up of the museum in the house.

Some agricultural implements and fishing equipment, hand towels and checked ‘lungis’ (sarongs worn by men) are on display as Ali claimed that these are the identity of the ‘Miya’ community.

In Assam, the word ‘Miya’ refers to Bengalispeaking migrants whose origin can be traced to Bangladesh. Ali along with his two minor sons sat on a dharna outside the house demanding the immediate reopening of the museum.

“We are displaying objects with which the community identifies itself so that people from other communities can realise that the Miyas are not any different from them”, Ali said.

The police later took

him into custody. Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that such activities by some members of the Miya community posed a threat to the “Assamese identity”.

“How can they (Miya community) claim that the plough is their identity? It has been used by all farmers in the state for ages. It is only the lungi that they can claim as their own,” Sarma said at the sidelines of a programme.

Those who have set up the museum will have to answer to an expert committee on what basis the claims were made, he added.

The setting up of a Miya Museum was first proposed by former Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed in 2020. He had written to the director of museums urging for its establishment at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra to showcase the culture and heritage of Bengali-speaking Muslims living in the riverine areas of the state. Sarma had rejected Ahmed’s proposal.

Pol parties agreed to liquor rule change: Mizoram CM Meitei surname by non-locals is AIZAWL, OCT 25 (PTI): Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Tuesday said the recent notification on grape wine was done with the consent of various political parties.

The Mizoram Liquor Prohibition rules notified on September 7 allowed the manufacture, sale, and export of grape wine processed from locally grown grapes.

Processing, sale, and export of grape wine were previously prohibited under the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Act, which came into force in the state, except in three Autonomous District Council (ADC) areas in the

Zoramthanga southern part of the state, in May 2019.

The chief minister on Tuesday paid a visit to a grape winery set up by Champhai Grape Growers’ Society (CGGS) at Tlangsam village in Cham-

phai district, about 191 km from the state capital Aizawl.

During an interaction with leaders of the grape growers’ society, Zoramthanga said that grape wines are being manufactured legally following the recent notification of grape wine rules by the government after it was approved by several political parties in the state.

He said that the government is contemplating fixing the price of grape wine.

Zoramthanga said that the Mizo National Front (MNF) government has

been taking measures for the welfare of grape growers since its previous term and had waived a loan amounting to over Rs. 83 lakh owed

by CGGS in November 2020.

Apart from grapes, Champhai district has a great potential for the production of other fruits and crops because of its favourable climate, he said.

The five JD-U legislators are Khumukcham Joykisan Singh (Thangmeiband), Ngursanglur Sanate (Tipaimukh), Md. Achab Uddin (Jiribam), Thangjam Arunkumar (Wangkhei), and L.M. Khaute (Churachandpur).

ITANAGAR, OCT 25 (PTI): Around 700 shops were reduced to ashes in a massive fire that broke out at Naharlagun Daily Market near Itanagar on Tuesday morning, police said.

There was no casualty in the fire that was first spotted around 4 am, they said.

The market, the oldest in the state, is situated near the fire station and Naharlagun police station, around 14 km from Ar unachal Pradesh’s capital Itanagar.

The fire is suspected to be caused by firecrackers or lamps lit for Diwali celebrations, police said.

Firefighters swung into action immediately but as the shops were made of bamboo and timber with dry items stored in abundance in the market, the blaze spread fast, they claimed.

Panicked shopkeepers

Three fire tenders, one of which was brought in from Itanagar, fought for hours to bring the blaze

under control, police said.

The exact damage caused by the fire is being assessed, but it is estimated to be in crores of rupees, they said.

ram said the exact cause of the fire would be known after the completion of the investigation by the fire department.

Shopkeepers alleged that after spotting the blaze they rushed to the adjacent fire station but no personnel could be found. Further, when the fire services personnel arrived, the fire engines did not have water.

To refill the engines, the personnel had to travel a long distance, and they could come back with water only around 5 am, by which most of the market was already gutted, the shopkeepers alleged.

“The police also did not act. All of them should be terminated from service for failure to perform their duties,” Naharlagun Bazar Welfare Committee president Kipa Nai said.

After speaking to the shopkeepers, Arunachal Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACC&I) president Tarh Nachung demanded that all fire personnel on duty be suspended for negligence.

It was the failure of the government that it did not set up the minimum infrastructure required for fire fighting -- such as water filling points, which should immediately be made available at different locations in the Capital Complex, he said.

“If this is the situation in the heart of the capital, what would be the situation in the districts,” he questioned.

Itanagar MLA Techi Kaso told reporters that the market would be rebuilt by the state government in cooperation with ACC&I.

The truck bearing registration number RJ 19GC 3301 was intercepted by a police team led by Khatkhati OC SI Raju Dowarah.

“The consignment was brought from Dimapur and was supposed to be delivered at Byrnihat in Meghalaya from where it would be further smuggled to North India,” said a senior police officer.

“During search, 300 bags containing suspected Burmese Black Pepper weighing 13,500 kg were recovered concealed under 70 rice bags of 50 kg each inside the truck.” the official said.

KOLKATA, OCT 25 (PTI): Cyclone Sitrang crossed the Bangladesh coast near Barisal after skirting the West Bengal coast, the IMD said on Tuesday.

The weather in the southern West Bengal districts is likely to improve from forenoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The system, which moved towards Bangladesh from north Bay of Bengal at a speed of 56 kmph caused moderate to heavy rain and squally weather in West Bengal’s coastal districts of South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur, dampening festive spirits on Deepavali and Kali Puja.

Sitrang made landfall between Tinkona island and Sandwip near Barisal in Bangladesh between 9.30 pm and 11.30 pm on Monday with a sustained wind speed of 80 to 90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph, the Regional Met Centre in Kolkata said.

NEW DELHI, OCT 25 (PTI): Astronomy enthusiasts turned their gaze towards the sun as the moon started to cover the solar disc as a partial solar eclipse began on Tuesday.

The partial solar eclipse is being observed in several parts of the country with Srinagar witnessing the maximum obscuration of the solar disc at 55 per cent.

The first contact, where in the moon begins to cover the solar disc, happened at 4:29 pm in Delhi, where the moon was expected to cover 43 per cent of the solar disc.

Since the eclipse is taking place in the evening, the ending of the celestial phenomenon will not be visible as it would take place after sunset. “A solar eclipse occurs on a new moon day when the Moon comes in between the Earth and the Sun and when all the three objects are aligned. A partial solar eclipse will occur when the lunar disk covers the solar disk partially,” an official said.

Government officials cautioned that eclipsed sun should not be viewed with the naked eye, as it could lead to blindness.

A safe technique to observe the solar eclipse is either by using proper filter like aluminized Mylar, black polymer, welding glass of shade number 14 or by making projection of sun’s image on a white board by telescope.

AICC general secretary communications Jairam Ramesh said respecting diversity has been India’s hallmark for many years and cited the examples of Zakir Hussain, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed and A P J Abdul Kalam who held the top constitutional position in the country for many years.

Our society will be strengthened through diversity,” he noted.

ritain had its third prime minister within three months when Rishi Sunak was chosen to head Britain on October 25 after Liz Truss resigned on October 20 following her government’s failed tax-cutting budget that rocked financial markets and which led to a revolt within her own Conservative Party. Truss had earlier replaced the then irrepressible prime minister Boris Johnson on September 6 after he was forced to resign on July 7 due to covid-19 pandemic party gate scandal, backlash over skyrocketing costs of living, and other crises.

She had been in office for just 44 days, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in British history. Rishi Sunak, an Indian-origin British lawmaker was chosen as the next prime minister of the UK on October 24. He is the UK’s first leader of colour and also son in law of N.R. Narayana Murthy, well known founder of Indian software giant Infosys.

Sunak took charge after meeting King Charles III who invited him to form the government. Sunak’s win came after Penny Mordaunt backed out of the Tory leadership contest and failed to secure the necessary 100 nominations from her fellow Tory MPs. Sunak’s phenomenal rise to the office of the prime minister of the UK has also sparked debate in India between liberals and right wing politicians about his Hindu credentials. The political spectrum in India is using the elevation of Rishi Sunak to talk about the issues they hold dear. The Hindus especially in the BJP, are just celebratory because someone who has asserted his Hindu faith proudly in the past by doing Gau Puja etc, is becoming the leader of a Western Nation. Besides being the first Hindu Prime Minister of Indian heritage, Sunak is also the youngest for around 200 years at 42 years.

Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P.C. Chidambaram said, “I think there is a lesson to be learned by India and the parties that practise majoritarianism.” Chidambaram pointed out that first, Kamala Harris was chosen as vice president of the USA and then Rishi Sunak as the prime minister of UK. In all these, he said both the USA and UK have embraced the non-majority citizens of minority religions in choosing them as leaders of their countries. He opined that there was a lesson learnt by India and also a strong message for those who practise majoritarianism. The debate in India that clearly has political overtones, does no credit to the British politicians who seen Rishi Sunak as the man who may have the answer to their economic problems. Rishi is first a British citizen and then a prime minister of his country. Be it Rishi Sunak or Sadiq Aman Khan , the Mayor of London, since 2016; both belong to different religions. Both were chosen on the basis of their capabilities and not because of their race of religion. A social media post after Rishi was chosen as the prime minister of UK, listed the three top leaders –Rishi a Hindu, Khan a Muslim and King Charles III a Christian.. It would take an incredibly naive person to believe that just because Sunak is a proud Hindu and a leader of Indian origin, he is going to take decisions that are beneficial to India.

“I chose you…” (John 15:16). Keep these words as a wonderful reminder in your theology. It is not that you have gotten God, but that He has gotten you. God is at work bending, breaking, molding, and doing exactly as He chooses.

And why is He doing it? He is doing it for only one purpose— that He may be able to say, “This is My man, and this is My woman.” We have to be in God’s hand so that He can place others on the Rock, Jesus Christ, just as He has placed us.

Never choose to be a worker, but once God has placed His call upon you, woe be to you if you “turn aside…to the right or the left…” (Deuteronomy 28:14). He will do with you what He never did before His call came to you, and He will do with you what He is not doing with other people. Let Him have His way.

hen we travel to various cities of the globe particularly those that are developed and doing well, we come across city centre or centres which are not only a must see but also like nerve centres and is a part of the character of the city. Some examples are Times square, new York, champs de elysee, Paris, Picadilly circus, London, La Rambla, Barcelona and so on so forth. Most of the elected leaders or others from Nagaland have travelled widely around the Globe and are fully aware but unfortunately, we have not been able to put it in place in our state.

There was a time during DAN 1 Government of Nagaland had proposed city centre in the area of the old secretariat, Kohima but nothing got translated on ground and even discussions do not seem to happening. Hopefully the Kohima smart city project will take this into consideration. In fact the Commercial capital, Dimapur requires at least one city centre and it would be possible in the Naga shopping arcade area now in Dimapur district or in the Northeast Agri Expo area, now in Chumukedima district.

The state Government will do well to look into this aspect beside priorities such as Roads, Power, Water supply, Health, Education and other essential

services. People of Nagaland are eagerly awaiting “ change is coming” – the slogan of the present Government.

It is heartening to note that during the recent visit of the Advisor(Urban development) Dr. Nicky Kire and the principal Secretary Shri Himato Zhimomi there was a discussion about City Centre in the Naga Shopping Arcade area as was reported by a local daily. There is a great need for us to keep pace with the rest of the world. A city centre is not just a place for leisure but rather a nerve centre of the city.

Important events, conferences, meetings can happen in this location which will have required facilities such as IT centre, Mall or convenience stores, fuelling station, Movie complex, Cafes/ restaurants, souvenir stores, Bookshops, Conference halls and a sizable outdoor space for large meetings/events and also for parking. The details can be worked out as per requirement by technical experts as per the original plan, space is still available.

The recent unfortunate incident of a few eucalyptus trees collapsing in the Shopping Arcade area leading to loss of precious lives and injuries to some others was indeed tragic. The District Magistrate in consultation with disaster management and other related

departments ordered for felling of all the trees along that stretch from Nagarjan police point to Walford Junction.

More than 400 standing trees have been felled and the area looks like the bald head of some of our esteemed leaders.

The main area of concern is that this cleared area should not be misused for allotment of stalls or such other structures. It is so heartbreaking to note that the beautifully planned Arcade is slowly turning into concrete jungle and structures have sprung up all over the complex and even worse it has become a vice den. There is still hope if the political leaders as well as the local leaders, officers and the public are able to see the larger picture and come up with clear vision and concrete plan to rejuvenate this precious location and make it a place of pride for not only Dimapurians but Nagas in general. Food wastage in India: A concern

very year, World Food Day is celebrated on 16 October. This day aims at tackling global hunger and striving to eradicate hunger across the world. But question arises are we learning something from the celebration not to waste food in order to tackle hunger?

As per ancient wisdom, food is hailed as nectar, and wastage of food is considered a sin. But one-third of all food globally goes to waste. That’s enough to feed 3 billion people! Food wastage is fast assuming serious dimensions. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), a staggering 1.3 billion tonnes of food is being wasted annually. The FAO report further states that one-third of the total global food production is wasted, costing the world economy about $750 billion or Rs. 47 lakh crore. According to the UN Hunger Report, although the world produces enough food to feed the entire global population, still as many as 811 million people go hungry every day.

It is because of food wastage. As per Food and Agricultural Organisation report, nearly 931 million tonnes of food go to waste each year which accounts for nearly 17% of global food production. As per the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Food Waste Index Report, 2021 61% of food waste comes from households, 26% from food service and 13% from retail.

According to the report, the US wasted 59 kg per household and China 64 kg per household. The household food waste estimate in the US 19,359,951 tonnes a year, while China accounts for 91,646,213 tonnes of food wastage a year That amounts to a staggering 68,760,163 metric tonnes of household food waste per year. According to a report by the National Resources Defence Council (NRDC), 40 per cent of the food goes uneaten in the US, whereas in Asia, India and China cause a loss 1.3 billion tonnes of food wastage every year.

It’s a grim paradox; a country that struggles to feed its starving population also wastes a lot of food. This contradiction puts

In India, 40% of the food is wasted which is equivalent to Rs 92,000 crores a year. Around 1% of the GDP is depleted in the form of food wastage. According to the Ministry of Agriculture (Govt of India), Rs.50,000 crores of food produced gets wasted every year.

Food loss and waste undermine the sustainability of our food systems. When food is lost or wasted, all the resources that were used to produce this food - including water, land, energy, labour and capital - go to waste. Food wastage’s carbon footprint is estimated at 3.3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent of GHG released into the atmosphere per year.

Only government policies are not responsible for food waste problem we are facing today, but our culture and traditions are also playing a lead role in this drama.

So, stopping the wastage of food is one single step that can make our country and planet a better place to live. It is a very easy habit that needs a small tweaking of our existing habits of how we consume and store our food.

Acute power blackout at Phek neighborhoods

ower outages in an around Phek headquarters is not a new trend and citizens are not strangers to regular blackouts.

But this time, it seems to be going beyond reasonability. Since 11th Oct., there has been no electric power supply in some villages around Phek town like Lozaphuhu, Losami & Lanezho and ignorant villagers has no clue of what has happened. Even if electricity comes for few moment, it blinks which is as good as no power. Perhaps, one of the consequences of officers’ absenteeism that District Offices has come to wrought with, directing the field and offices from the comfort of Kohima and Dimapur while the over strained lower staff are often made to bear the brunt of public wrath. Covid-19 has changed the way things function and regular electricity and good internet connectivity has become the san qua non for many things to function. Especially students, teachers, researchers, educational institutions, work-from-home office people, time bound online works, entrepreneurs, workers whose machinery is power driven, etc. gets terribly affected whenever there is power failure or poor net connectivity. In the past, we hardly see neighboring Manipur villages lighted while Nagaland villages remained lighted but today it is becoming opposite. It is so unfortunate that while other states are going forward, we are advancing backward.

Depriving of electricity is no less a violation of basic human right enshrine in the Constitution of India in Article 25 (1) & Article 39 (a) under Right to Adequate Standard of Living under Socio-economic right and enforceable by the court of law. We earnestly appeal to the authorities to restore power supply.

Naga leaders’ meeting with Gandhi in Delhi on July 17, 1947

n July 17, 1947, the Naga delegations headed by A.Z phizo met Mahatma Gandhi at Bhangi Basti in Delhi. The Naga Delegations submitted the points that they wanted to discuss with Mahatma Gandhi as follows: 1. The Nagas are from a country in the NE frontier of India, Which lies between two huge countries namely, India and China.

2. The Nagas were independent before the British advent.

3. They were first attacked in 1849. They fought the British for 30 years for independence. The last battle was fought in 1879. And the Nagas were conquered.

4. The Naga (British subjects) demanded independence In 1929 when the Simon Commission visited Kohima, the headquarters of the Naga hills.

5. The Naga Hills has been a totally “excluded area” since the 1935 act came into force.

6. Again in 1946, the Nagas demanded complete independence when the British decided to withdraw from India. An interim arrangement on the lines of district autonomy has been offered to the Nagas by the authorities and the Nagas have rejected it.

7. The Nagas fought for independence when the British threatened to take

away their independence back in the 19th century.

8. Again the Nagas resisted the Japanese invasion with all their might in 1944 for their independence.

9. This demand of the Nagas for independence is not the opinion of the Dewan or ruler (The nagas have no ruler and the British are going). It is the will of the people.

10. The Nagas will declare independence on August 14, 1947.

Points of discussion: 1. The Nagas are determined to have complete independence. They will not join the Indian Union.

They will die before losing their independence.

2. Will the Government of India use force to bring the Nagas under the Indian Union? Does anyone under the Sun have the right to take away their independence? It might still right.

Mahatma Gandhi assured that “ Nagas have every right to be independent if they did not want to join the Indian Union. When the Naga delegates pointed out that the Assam governor Sir Akbar Hydari was threatening to use force against the Nagas in case they refused to join the Indian Union, Gandhi exclaimed: “ Sir Akbar is wrong.

He cannot do that….. I will come to the Naga Hills; I will ask them to shoot me

first before one Naga is shot” Gandhi even went so far as to say “why wait until 14 August? Why not even declare your independence tomorrow?”

The Naga delegation came back assured by Gandhi’s assurances and declared their independence on August 14, 1947, one day prior to India’s own declaration of her own independence.

I wonder why Indian successors forget the words of their “Father of the Nation”. He said clearly stated, “ Nagas have every right to be independent if they did not want to join the Indian union”.

I guaranteed no political parties bring independence to the Naga people except Naga National Council NNC/FGN. Because the documents or papers were signed by NNC for independence and NNC is the chosen one of the Naga people.

The common people never accept interim government or packages; we want only independence as assured by Mahatma Gandhi to the Nagas. The talk never concluded even a hundred thousand round talk without the NNC. Don’t waste your precious time and money.

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Khestra on Tuesday said 50 per cent of the construction work of the temple has been completed and the overall progress is satisfactory.

“The temple will be opened to devotees in January 2024 after the installation of idols of Ram Lalla in the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine on the festival of Makar Sankranti,” trust general secretary Champat Rai told PTI. He said the ground floor of the temple will be ready by December next year and around January 14, 2024, idols of Lord Ram will be installed.

COIMBATORE, OCT 25 (PTI): The stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act has been invoked in the case relating to a car explosion in the city that killed one person, while five others have been arrested over the incident and police have intensified the probe covering all aspects including terror angle.

The arrested were identified by the police as Muhammad Talka, Muhammed Azharuddin, Muhammed Riyaz, Firoze Ismail and Muhammed Nawaz Ismail, all in their 20s.

With some of them being enquired by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2019, the police were also probing their activities after that, City Police Commissioner V Balakrishnan said. Hours after the Tamil Nadu BJP questioned why the police had not specified the reasons for the arrest of the five and the sections under which they have been detained, Balakrishnan said that besides the UAPA, other IPC sections like conspiracy have also been included in the case. Police are also probing if the man killed in the gas cylinder explosion in the car on Sunday, Jemisha Mubeen had any links with Mohammed Azharuddin, an accused in the Easter Sunday bomb blasts in a Sri Lankan Church in 2019, which killed over 250 people. Maoists torch vehicles in Odisha PHULBANI (ODISHA), OCT 25 (PTI): Armed Maoists allegedly torched vehicles and other equipment used in road construction work in Odisha’s Kandhamal district, police said on Tuesday.

DIMAPUR, OCT 25 (NPN): Food Corporation of India (FCI) has reiterated that sufficient stocks of rice were available in central pool to meet the requirement of NFSA and other schemes of the Centre as well as for additional requirement of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) for the state of Nagaland.

Last week, the market watchdog had imposed a penalty of Rs 1,337.76 crore on Google for abusing its dominant position in multiple markets in the Android mobile device ecosystem.

Pakistan to probe killing of journalist in Kenya ISLAMABAD, OCT 25 (PTI): The Pakistan government on Tuesday decided to set up a judicial commission to probe the killing of prominent journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya.

Sharif was shot dead in Kenya by the local police on Sunday night, with an official police statement later expressing “regrets on the unfortunate incident”.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a video message announced to officially probe the killing after questions were raised in the media about the mysterious circumstances of his death.

Deploring the tragic incident, the prime minister also assured the entire nation that an independent probe would bring all facts about the killing to light.

“I have decided to probe the killing and for this, I will ask the high court,” he said, adding the government would seek

approval from the Cabinet for it.

Pakistan’s powerful army had also asked the government to probe the killing.

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb also confirmed through a statement that a judicial commission would be formed to probe the killing.

Cyclone Sitrang kills 35 people in B’desh: officials DHAKA, OCT 25 (PTI): At least 35 people were killed and several homes destroyed as cyclone Sitrang ravaged Bangladesh’s southern coastlines and central parts after it made a landfall overnight, according to officials and media reports.

Sitrang completed its landfall and weakened to a tropical depression over Bangladesh in the early hours of Tuesday, Prothom Alo, a Bengali daily newspaper, reported.

Newspaper tallies and unofficial counts stated that the cyclone claimed 35 lives alongside leveling homes and other infrastructures, uprooting trees and disrupting road communication and power supplies.

Around 10 million people were without power in districts along the coasts on Tuesday. “Until 6 pm this evening, reports of 35 deaths were reported from 16 (of the 64 administrative) districts,” the mass circulation Prothom Alo said, but officials preferred several of the deaths as “missing cases”, confirming so far 16 deaths.

NABLUS (WEST BANK), OCT 25 (AP): Israeli forces raided a stronghold of an armed group in the occupied West Bank’s second-largest city, blowing up a bomb lab and engaging in a firefight, the military said on Tuesday.

Five Palestinians were killed and 20 were wounded, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The overnight raid in the old city, or kasbah, of Nablus, was one of the deadliest in the West Bank in 2022 and comes at a time of escalating tensions.

Television footage showed flames and smoke rising in the night sky over Nablus. The army said it used shoulder-launched missiles. Local residents reported a large explosion that rocked the old city and surrounding neighbourhoods.

The target of the raid was a group of Palestinian gunmen calling themselves the Lions’ Den. The group was responsible for the recent fatal shooting of an Israeli soldier and several attempted attacks, the army said.

The five men killed in the raid were in their 20s and 30s, the Health Ministry said. Several of the wounded were in serious condition, the ministry said.

didas has ended its partnership with the rapper formerly known as Kanye West over his offensive and antisemitic remarks, the latest company to cut ties with Ye and a decision that the German sportwear company said would hit its bottom line.

“Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech,” the company said in a statement Tuesday. “Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness.”

The company faced pressure to cut ties with Ye, with celebrities and others on social media urging Adidas to act. It said at the beginning of the month that it was placing its lucrative sneaker deal with the rapper under review.

Adidas said Tuesday that it conducted a “thorough review” and would immediately stop production of its line of Yeezy products and stop payments to Ye and his

companies. The sportswear company said it was expected to take a hit of up to 250 million euros ($246 million) to its net income this year from the move.

The move by Adidas, whose CEO Kasper Rorsted is stepping down next year, comes after Ye was suspended from Twitter and Instagram this month over antisemitic posts that the social networks said violated their policies.

He recently suggested slavery was a choice and called the COVID-19 vaccine the “mark of the beast,” among other comments. He also was criticized for wearing a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt to his Yeezy collection show in Paris.

Swift revealed that the ‘Anti-Hero’ music video was treated “as a first single,” but ‘Bejeweled’ was made for the “fans who like certain things like glitter and Easter eggs and lots of little cameos,” reports ‘People’ magazine.

Swift called it “a twist on a Cinderella story” and shared that the cameos are just as magical. According to ‘People’, she revealed that her longtime friends and collaborators, the HAIM sisters, appear as the stepsisters and Oscar winner Laura Dern plays her evil stepmother.

“How did you get in touch with Laura Dern?” asked host Jimmy Fallon. Swift playfully replied that she told the actress, 55, that she wrote a one-page script in which Dern would get to call her a “tired, tacky, wench.”

Giving a synopsis on the book, former HoD of English department at KCK, Dr. Kevileno Sakhrie said the book explores the

profound interaction between an individual’s inner self with the outer world.

She shared her observation on why many Naga women today were writing or were feeling the need to write was because, for a long time they did not have access to education and that their voices were unheard of.

Dr. Sakhrie said Jamir was a poet of great depth and therefore a reader needed to read her poems over and over in order to get to the bottom of what she actually was trying to say.

“Her poems are sharp, precise. Her touch is light even with heavy topics and this book is somewhere where anguage itself becomes a way of life,” the critique said.

Sharing the publisher’s note, Rita Krocha said she and the author had been strongly bonded through their shared love for writing and books.

Eating these types of grains can lower your heart disease risk • A new study has found that eating refined grains was linked with a greater risk for coronary artery disease.

• It also found that eating more whole grains seemed to have the opposite effect.

• Refined g rains have a great deal of their nutritional content removed during the refining process.

• Nutritionists say that the nutrients removed — especially fiber — help protect the heart.

• They recommend starting slowly and making healthy swaps as you increase your intake of whole grains.

A new study that is being presented this week at the American College of Cardiology Middle East 2022 Together With the 13th Emirates Cardiac Society Congress, reports that eating more refined grains was linked with a greater risk for premature coronary artery disease (PCAD).

Additionally, consuming whole grains was associated with reduced risk.

considered to be premature when it develops at an earlier age than generally expected. For this study, those ages were defined as 55 for women and 65 for men.

PCAD can lead to chest pain or heart attack as the coronary artery narrows or plaques rupture and block blood flow. Smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes put people at greater risk for developing this condition.

This study is significant because it is one of the first to look at how the type of grain eaten is related to heart disease in a Middle Eastern population. The study participants were all citizens of Iran.

The team of researchers, led by Mohammad Amin Khajavi Gaskarei, MD, of the Isfahan Cardiovascular Research Center and Cardiovascular Research Institute at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in Isfahan, Iran, recruited 2,099 people with PCAD from various Iranian hospitals who had undergone coronary angiography (X-ray imaging of the heart’s blood vessels).

Altogether, 1,168 people with healthy coronary arteries were recruited, while there were 1,369 who had CAD with blockages

equal to or above 75% in at least one coronary artery or equal to or above 50% in the left main coronary artery.

Their diet was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire to see how much whole or refined grains they were taking in before being diagnosed with heart disease.

Upon analysis of the data, it was found that higher intakes of refined grains were associated with increased PCAD risk.

Higher intakes of whole grains, on the other hand, were linked to reduced risk.

The conference is being held October 7-9, 2022 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

How whole grains differ from refined grains According to Samantha Snashall, a registered dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, who was not a part of the study, there is a big physical difference

between whole and refined grains.

“Physically, whole grains contain all parts of a wheat kernel (the bran, endosperm, and germ),” said Snashall.

The process of milling grains into white flour removes both the germ and bran from the endosperm.

Snashall said the main reason that these parts of the grain are removed is to improve shelf life, texture, and chewability. The fats within the germ can make grains spoil more quickly.

Also, the fiber found in the bran can make grain products more chewy and dense, which many people do not enjoy.

However, this also makes refined grains nutritionally very different from whole grains. “Each part of the kernel has different benefits to it,” she noted.

“The bran, which is the outer layer, contains a large source of fiber, B vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals,” said Snashall. “The most inner layer is the germ. This is where more nutrients such as B vitamins, Vitamin E, healthy fats, and more antioxidants will be found.”

Without the bran and germ, only the inner portion of the grain, the endosperm remains.

The endosperm is mostly carbohydrates, along with some protein and very few B vitamins, she noted.

Why whole grains are better for heart health Snashall said whole grains are overall better for your health because they contain more nutrients, which include: • fiber • healthy fats • vitamins • minerals • antioxidants • phytochemicals Refined grains, on the other hand, are mainly just starchy carbohydrates.

She also noted that fortification doesn’t really make refined grains equivalent to whole grains. “[T]hey won’t have as much as the whole grain counterpart,” noted Snashall. “Nor will they have the antioxidants and phytochemicals that whole grains have.”

When it comes to heart health specifically, she said fiber is an important component of whole grains.

“Fiber helps lower our cholesterol levels, specifically our LDL cholesterol (“bad cholesterol”) which can be impacted by other foods we consume (trans fats and some saturated fats).”

Additionally, refined

grains are more likely to be used in foods that contain added sugars, like cookies or pastries, according to Snashall. Sugar is linked to an increased risk of heart problems.

She does note, however, that just because something is labeled “whole grain,” this does not automatically make it healthier.

“Whole grain cookies, pastries, and specialty breads like cinnamon raisin can still have plenty of added sugars,” she said.

How to increase your intake of whole grains Samantha Coogan, Program Director of the Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, suggests that you start slowly and make sure you are taking enough fluid when you first begin eating more whole grains.

The reason? They’re higher in fiber, especially soluble fiber.

Fiber helps with intestinal motility, Coogan explained, but introducing it too quickly can lead to constipation, bloating, gas, and discomfort.

US Dietary GuidelinesTrusted Source recommend eating 25 to 34 grams of fiber per day from whole foods. Women should shoot for the lower end of the range at about

25 grams per day, while men should aim for the higher end of the range at 34 grams per day.

“Start with a lower amount at first,” Coogan advised. “If you don’t regularly consume fiber, start with 10 to 15 grams per day, then increase by about five grams every three to four days until you reach your goal, depending on your individual symptoms/ comfort.”

Coogan said it’s natural to see a bit of bloating at first or even constipation.

However, this will pass as your body adjusts.

If you’re stuck for ideas on foods to eat, Coogan noted that one way to get more whole grains is to simply swap out white bread for whole grain or eat brown rice instead of white.

She also suggests adding corn to salads and salsas and recommends eating popcorn. In addition to being a popular snack food, it’s also a whole grain.

According to the Whole Grains Council, one way to ensure that you are getting adequate whole grains is to look for their stamp. Three foods with the 100% Stamp or six foods with any Whole Grain Stamp are equal to three servings.

T20 WC: Australia hammer Sri Lanka by 7 wkts

PERTH, OCT 25 (PTI): Marcus Stoinis destroyed the Sri Lankan attack en route to scoring the fastest fifty by an Australian as the hosts got their T20 World Cup campaign back on track with a seven-wicket victory here on Tuesday.

Charith Asalanka’s 38 not out off 25 balls helped Sri Lanka put up a fighting 157 for six after Australia put them in.

Sri Lanka fought hard before they were blown away by the brute force of Stoinis who remained on 59 off 18 balls as Australia romped home in 16.3 overs.

The all-rounder raced to a record half-century in 17 balls. His memorable knock included half a dozen sixes and four boundaries.

Despite losing fast bowler Binura Fernando to injury in the first over, Sri Lanka kept themselves in the game for a major part of Australia’s chase.

LONDON,OCT 25 (AGENCIES): Rafael Nadal will return to competition at next week’s Paris Masters before taking his place at the season-ending ATP Finals, coach Carlos Moya said.

Captain Uttam Singh (3’), Rohit (12’), Johnson Purty (21’), Boby Singh Dhami (31’) and Amandeep Lakra (51’) found the back of the net for India, while Ikumi Saeki (15’) scored the only goal for Japan.

After a delayed start, India got out of the blocks quickly, as Uttam Singh’s attempt beat the Japanese goalkeeper after a spell of domination. And even though Japan threatened with a couple of penalty corners right after that, India’s defence wasn’t allowing them any space.

India absorbed the pressure from Japan, before Rohit fired home a penalty corner to give his side a 2-0 lead. However, just before the hooter, Japan pulled one back through Ikumi Saeki (15’), who converted a penalty corner to make it 2-1.
