Shah calls for peace in Manipur, assures justice

GUWAHATI, MAY 25 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday appealed to the people of Manipur to maintain peace and promised that justice will be ensured to all sections of society.

Asserting that Narendra Modi will become the Prime Minister for the third consecutive term after the general elections next year, he claimed that the opposition Congress will not be able to even secure its present tally in the Lok Sabha.

Shah, while laying the foundation stone of the tenth campus of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) at Changsari in Assam’s Kamrup district, said he will travel to Manipur to help resolve disputes.

IMPHAL, MAY 25: A sit-in-protest was held at Motbung Model village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district Thursday to demand that N Biren Singh must be made to resign as chief minister of Manipur.

The protest was held as part of an ongoing series of protests in Kangpokpi district, initiated by the recently formed Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), (Cont’d on p-8) Sadar Hills. At Thursday’s

protest, the participants demanded that the Centre immediately remove N Biren Singh as chief minister.

According to a DIPR report, the prohibition order was issued to avoid untoward incidents and also as a safety measure and to facilitate the immediate repair and renovation of the same.

Nagaland logs 2 fresh Covid cases

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 5 (NPN): Nagaland on Thursday recorded two fresh cases of Covid-19 pushing the total caseload to 36024.

According to health department, one each case was reported from Dimapur and Kohima. With this, the state currently has five active cases. The death toll remained unchanged at 782 (including 5 non-Covid deaths but with positivity).

Meanwhile, India recorded 535 new cases, while the active cases have decreased to 6,168 from 6,591, the Health Ministry said on Thursday. The death toll has increased to 5,31,854 with five deaths.

Lift restrictions on media for Parliament coverage: PCI

NEW DELHI, MAY 25 (PTI): Press Club of India (PCI) Thursday urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to lift the restrictions on media covering Parliamentary proceedings that were imposed during the Covid pandemic.

In a letter to the Speaker, PCI said a large number of journalists were still being denied the opportunity to cover Parliament proceedings despite having permanent press gallery passes. PCI said the “superfluous” restrictions on media have “no logical basis or rationale” as the Covid situation had

eased and even the World Health Organization had announced that it was no longer a global health emergency. “…we strongly feel that these curbs are part of a wider agenda aimed at controlling the media and restricting freedom of press in order to impede free flow of independent news stories and information to the people of the largest democracy of the world,” PCI said in the letter, which came days ahead of the inauguration of the new Parliament Building on May 28.

K O H I M A , M AY 2 5 (NPN): In a tragic incident, a student leader from Tizit under Mon district was reportedly hacked to death Thursday morning.

The victim has been identified as Ahoa Konyak, a resident of Tizit town who was serving as Tizit Area Students Union’s (TASU) Action Committee chairman.

According to reports, Ahoa was attacked by one person identified as Menshan Konyak during a surprise check carried out by TASU against drug peddlers. During the alterca-

Police sources said they received the information about the incident around 9:30 am, following which the situation in Tizit became volatile. A group of irate

A case has registered and investigation was going on, police said.

Manipur violence: NSCN (I-M) warns against harassing Nagas

DIMAPUR, MAY 25 (NPN): Describing as “something very detestable” the ongoing violence between the two communities—Meiteis and Kukis— in Manipur, the NSCN (I-M) has warned against harassing Nagas in any manner.

NSCN (I-M) through its MIP stated that the attack against the place of human inhabitants (villages) was very inhuman.

It also stated that burning down of places of worship (Churches) was considered as “sacrilegious acts” com-

mitted on religious lines.

NSCN (I-M) asserted that all those acts of violence were violation of human rights that were applicable to all members of human society.

NSCN (I-M) sough to put on record that the Naga minor tribes—Aimol, Chiru, Chothe, Kharam, Koireng and Kom—were part of Naga community.

It stated that those minor Naga tribes have been actively involved in the “Nagas’ political struggle for their freedom from India and Myanmar till our goal

is achieved.”

“Our Meitei brothers and Kukis should not take them otherwise and harass them in any manner,” NSCN (I-M) said. It expressed regret that one Kom village (Kangathei village) had come under attack by Kuki militants and the villagers were forced to vacate their village. “Such vicious violence will only aggravate the situation and this must be put to stop forthwith for the sake of humanity and peaceful coexistence,” NSCN (I-M) stated.

DIMAPUR: A threeday introduction training for Surveillance Workers (SWs) organised by National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC), Directorate of Health & Family Welfare Kohima, Nagaland concluded Thursday at the Conference Hall of Department of Under Developed Areas (DUDA) Guest House, Kohima.

A press release by NCVBDC informed that joint director and SPO, NCVBDC, Dr. Neisakho Kere welcomed the SWs and emphasized on upholding sincerity to the work.

Dr. Kere presented the roles and responsibili-

ties and basic information on vector borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, Japanese Encephalitis (JE), filariasis, chikungunya and kala azar.

KO H I M A , M AY 2 5 (NPN): A three-day 12th I n d i a ’s I n t e r n a t i o n a l Movement to United Nations (IIMUN) state level conference of Nagaland began on Thursday at G. Rio School Kohima with minister of Tourism and Higher Education, Temjen Imna Along as the chief guest.

Speaking at the inaugural programme, the minister said he was impressed to see such a young dynamic organisation that dreams and upholds the aspiration of the future of this nation. He thanked the G. Rio School for initiating and organising the event which holds an energetic

future and strategy of the students.

Along stated that he was more impressed with the conference because this was something very new and interesting way of shaping the young people.

“This was a platform to discuss and debate on topics to bring out the best, we should be more open to discuss real issues openly and with honesty”, he added.

He informed that the first step to education is to be able to listen, hear criticism and to be patient.

“Get rid of tribalism and practise that we are one, don’t be afraid to say what is in your heart, be bold and be fearless and work hard towards your goal”, he advised.

Dr. Tseilhoutuo (Ato) Rhütso, MLA who was also a special guest shared that, to shape for a better Nagaland is within the four walls of each class room and advised the students to identify God’s given talent and aim for the best.

The MLA also mentioned that each individual’s pride is not defined by wealth or the size but one should be proud if they have proper education and skills. He said one should not just hold a degree certificate but should also have the skills to be employed.

A press release by Nagaland State Disability Forum (NSDF) informed that the event was organised by the All India Federation of the Deaf (AIFD), New Delhi, and hosted by the Assam Association

of the Deaf (AAD) at Madhavdeva International Auditorium, Guwahati.

The 7th AICD took place after a gap of 35 years. The four-day conference included a host of activities from presentations to discussions on various topics concerning deaf people’s rights to deaf cultural shows.

DIMAPUR: One day orientation programme for head teachers of government schools under Mon district was organised by District Education Mission Office, Samagra Shiksha Mon Thursday at Council Hall, Mon. According to a DIPR report, delivering a keynote address, Sub-Divisional Education Officer (SDEO) Tizit, District Education Officer (DEO) in-charge of Mon, I. Moala Aier, urged the head teachers to utilize the school library book issued by the school education department.

“Let the children read the books and inculcate reading habits and in their later age they will develop reading skills and understand better what they are

reading,” said Aier.

She also expressed the hope that through the orientation programme many teachers would be more reliable, oriented, and responsible and implement all programmes laid down by the department, which would ultimately lead to success and achievement in the district.

A brief description of the roles and functions of school heads in light of National Educational Policy (NEP) 2020 was given by associate professor, DIET Mon, Wanme. He said, as responsible head teachers, each should be thorough with the documents policy of education and likened it to a “Bible in the educational system”. He also highlighted the key principles of

NEP 2020 and called upon the head teachers to be great teachers and create more leaders for the betterment of society.

According to a DIPR report, the DC was speaking at the “Yuva Utsav” celebration organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan Zunheboto under the Ministry of Youths Affairs and Sports government of India under the theme, “Panch Pran of Amrit Kaal” at Cornerstone Higher Secondary School Zunheboto, Thursday.

Cautioning the students against bad vices, Mali said choosing good over bad depends on each individual, and encouraged the students to avoid bad habits. He

asked them to use technology for their own benefits and study purposes but not become addicted to it.

AGARTALA, MAY 25 (IANS): The Tripura government has asked its employees to maintain punctuality in attending office otherwise strict action will be taken against the erring staff.

The Tripura government’s general administration department secretary Abhishek Singh in a notification on Thursday said that it has been observed that the employees working in various departments, offices, public sector undertakings are not observing punctuality and maintaining regular attendance as expected by the government.

In view of this, all the employees are directed to be punctual and maintain regular attendance henceforth, it said.

The notification said that the employees should reach the office in time, so that the public can avail their service from 10 a.m. sharp on all working days. “ S i m i l a r ly n o o n e should leave the office during working hours (10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.) during the working days without sufficient and unavoidable reasons and without intimation to the controlling authority under any circumstance.”

In case of any failure in abiding by the government instructions, the department will take necessary action against the concerned employee, the notification said, asking all the departmental heads to strictly comply with the instructions.

GUWAHATI, MAY 25 (IANS): A businessman was killed by unidentified miscreants in Assam’s Dhubri district, officials said on Thursday. The incident happened in the wee hours of Thursday at the victim’s house in Bilasipara area of the district. The victim, named Baser Ali, was a wellknown and well-established businessman in the area.

Ali was fatally shot from close range by unknown criminals, according to police.

Then the miscreants left the area and vanished into the night.

Local police arrived on the spot to begin an investigation. Additionally, the police found an empty cartridge at the crime scene.

ITANAGAR, MAY 25 (PTI): Researchers have discovered a new species of tree in Arunachal Pradesh.

The discovery of the new tree species in Arunachal Pradesh was published in the May 19 edition of the Edinburgh Journal of Botany.

Meiogyne Arunachalensis was discovered by researchers during a biodiversity expedition to the “Adi hills of Arunachal Pradesh,” the report published in the journal said, adding that the expedition was supported by the Hem Chand Mahindra Foundation, the Wildlife Institute of India, and Forest department of Arunachal Pradesh.

Researcher Navendu Page, one of the members of the group, mentioned in the report that this is the third species from India and the first from eastern Himalayan and Northeast India. “The genus Meiogyne is distributed throughout South and Southeast Asia and includes approximately 33 described taxa,” Page said. The species shows morphological similarity with Meiogyne maxiflora, a species distributed in Thailand, but it differs in a number of vegetative and reproductive characteristics, Page said in the report.

Union minister of state for home Nityanand Rai informed the media persons in Imphal today that Shah would arrive on May 29 stay in the state for three days till June 1.

Rai arrived in Imphal today to review the efforts being put in place to restore normalcy in the state.

Addressing the press at chief minister’s secretariat Thursday afternoon, Rai said that during his three-day visit, Shah would meet people from different communities and have dialogues with them in order to restore peace and tranquillity in the state.

ITANAGAR, MAY 25 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen K T Parnaik has emphasised on the need for comprehensive surveillance of border areas in the state and coordination among the intelligence agencies, an official said.

During a meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday, the governor stressed on the security of borders and the need for collaborative efforts between forces and villagers living near international boundaries. Parnaik is on an official visit to New Delhi.

He apprised the defence minister of the need for providing additional Central Armed Police Forces to guard the border as well as deter smuggling of narcotics in the state, a Raj Bhavan official said on Thursday.

Even after 21 days since the spate of violence, no positive action to end the crisis was taken up till today, the Congress Legislator Party (CLP) leader alleged.

Addressing reporters at Imphal Congress Bhavan, O Ibobi Singh said Congress was unable to remain silent as the double engine government failed to take appropriate action to save the life and property of the people of both the conflicting communities.

He said tension is still prevailing in the state as killings and burning of houses continue unabated.

Shah is on a day-long visit to Assam to attend three events to mark the completion of two years of the Himanta Biswa Sarmaled BJP government in the state. Taking a dig at Shah, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “The Union Home Minister goes all the way to Guwahati today, but does not deem it fit to visit Imphal when Manipur has been burning for 22 days.”

“This is the same Union Home Minister who held 16 rallies and 15 road shows in Karnataka, but cannot find time for the people of Manipur who are suffering a lot due to the ideology and politics of the so-called Double Engine Sarkar,” Ramesh said in a tweet. Later, at an event in Guwahati, Shah said that he will travel to Manipur to resolve all disputes, but all

groups should remove mistrust and suspicion among themselves.

“I will go to Manipur soon and stay there for three days but before that, both groups should remove mistrust and suspicion among themselves and ensure that peace is restored in the state,” Shah said.

The Centre will ensure that justice is given to all who suffered in the clashes which broke out in the state, but “people must hold a dialogue to ensure peace in the state,” the Home Minister said. SHILLONG, MAY 25: Two Meghalaya Ministers Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh and Rakkam A Sangma on Thursday appealed the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) legislator, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit to withdraw his ongoing fast over the state’s job reservation policy.

Basaiawmoit began his indefinite hunger strike on Tuesday to mount pressure on the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government to review the state job reservation policy.

“I will continue fasting till the government agree to VPP’s demand. The government is fully aware of our demand,” said Basaiaw-

moit, who is staging his hunger strike at a parking lot near the additional state secretariat.

Lyngdoh, who is also the chairperson of a Committee to examine the job roster system, appealed to the VPP legislator Basaiawmoit to come to the negotiation table and discuss the matter.

“I request Basaiawmoit please come to the negotiating table and let us discuss this matter. I cannot promise Basaiawmoit whatever he says it will be get done because I have to first understand what he wants,” Lyngdoh said “I feel that if he stop this hunger strike it will be good for everyone and we could get together and

discuss this matter without harming anyone of the communities because we are Meghalayans,” she added.

The state reservation policy earmarks 40 percent each for the indigenous people of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo Hills regions, five percent more is reserved for other tribes of the state and the rest is open category.

Education Minister Rakkam Sangma also strongly appealed to Basiawmoit to end his indefinite fast and come forward to the negotiating table to discuss the matter.

He also expressed concern that the Supreme Court may strike down the state

job reservation policy that the state is currently enjoying right now.

The Education Minister cited a case from 2014 in Maharashtra where the Supreme Court had invalidated an ordinance enacted by the state government that exceeded the permissible reservation limit of 50 per cent for a particular tribe.

The apex court subsequently issued a circular to all states, including Meghalaya, reinforcing the 50 per cent cap.

“Therefore, I appeal to every citizen and political leaders of the state that we have to understand the consequences of the actions

done today. With this kind of politics and drama we are playing with fire and that fire will burn everybody including VPP,” Sangma said.

Meanwhile, supporters of the VPP and various political leaders and civil society groups visited Basaiawmoit to express their solidarity with him.

United Democratic Party (UDP) general secretary Jemino Mawthoh who visited Basaiawmoit said that his party, which is part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance coalition government, would soon meet the government and demand to review the job reservation policy.

irls outshone boys as per the results of the Nagaland board of School Education (NbSE) examination 2023 for both High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate(HSSLC). It has become almost like an annual feature where girls do better than boys in the NbSE exams since the past few decades. Overall, out of a total of 17130 qualified, 9350 were girls and 7780 were boys. In the top 20 merit list, out of a total of 99 candidates, 66 were girls and 33 were boys. In HSSLC examination, the girls again proved their mettle as per the results of different streams. In Arts, the pass percentage was girls (86.27%) and boys (78.44 %). In Commerce the pass percentage was girls (90.34 %) and boys (82.47 %). In Science, the pass percentage was -girls (90.39 %) and boys (82.51 %). In the top 10 list in Arts stream all 18 positions were held by girls while boys drew a blank. In Commerce, there were eight girls and four boys while in Science there was gender equality with nine girls and nine boys. The achievements of girl candidates during the past few decades convey a strong message that they are capable and dependable. perhaps this could be due to paradigm shift in society that once was heavily loaded in favour of boys. It is a welcome change since progress is about partnership and no critical segment can be ignored for whatever reasons.

Society has acknowledged that when it comes to consistency, girls can be trusted to do that. According to findings , girls today are purpose driven as they have become more confident of their abilities in getting better-paid professional jobs. Even in sports, women are proving their mettle in sports and the military. It is also found that girls are more attentive and can sit for longer periods than boys and therefore, are able to engage in processoriented thinking while the boys engage in a lot of physical activity and are more inclined to goaloriented thinking. perhaps most telling, however, is how the genders are raised during childhood.

Males are raised to be independent thinkers, while females are raised to be thinkers capable of arriving at a decision that’s good for a group, rather than an individual. In a male-dominated society like Nagaland, the imbalance in investment in education that favor boys over girls, has shifted though changes that are slowly taking place. As against political quota, it is time to walk the talk in giving women quota in employment. Unless there is significant change in attitude in this regard progress would be incomplete. A dramatic shift is needed when one considers the fact that in addition to child bearing, women are the main work force in the state and contribute much to the economy. perhaps the old adage proves true- educate a man, and you educate an individual. Educate a woman, and you educate a nation. In this day and age, women are no longer content to play second fiddle as they have proved that anything men can do, women can do better.

New Parliament building inauguration debate unites Opposition

Releasing the Joint Statement of Like-Minded Opposition Parties, Sanjay Rout, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP said, “All opposition parties have decided to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28 and we will also do the same,” said Raut. The statement has name of the Congress and 18 other parties.

It paves the way for most non-BJP parties coming together on a common issue of not maintaining propriety and parliamentary tradition of the protocol precedence of President of India. The joint opposition has said the President could not be ignored and prime minister cannot take the precedence in matters of Parliament. It is possible that the entire opposition would meet in Delhi to decide the course of action for the elections to 2024, just a year ahead. The coming

together of the Opposition would force BJP to have new strategies to adopt and throw challenges to keep the rivals at bay. The Indian politics is warming for an intense year-long electoral battle and polarisation of votes.

If the boycott extends to the new building itself as some parties expressed so, it can lead to almost a direct clash between the ruling party and the opposition conglomerate. It is unprecedented in the history of Indian democracy.

It is to be seen if it smoothens up the internal contradictions of the opposition as also how it would share the seats in each of the states. Though AAP is part of the combine it is yet not clear how it would stay together with Congress.

At present Lok Sabha has 543 members and Rajya Sabha 250. There is no Central Hall in the new building.

James Marape, the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, speaking at the Third Forum for India Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit, hailed Modi as the leader of the Global South and said all island nations will rally behind India at all international forums.

He sought Modi’s good offices to bring their narrative to the attention of platforms like G7 and G20.

There is thus an opening for India, both bilaterally and multilaterally to engage with the Pacific Islands.

Clarification On April 20, 2023 I posted an article through your esteem daily and there has been a mistake in reporting the number of teaching staff of a Government High School from our end. There were only 26 teaching staff in Government High School,Nihoto but it was published as 28 teaching staff and apparently with the number of P.T and G.T, where it was published as 24 and 22 respectively.

This matter has created more misunderstanding with the Union in general and could be for withdrawal of any teacher based on this information.

I would like to state that the information posted on April 20, 2023 is invalid since it’s a wrong.

CRIMHSC: The fourth day of the ongoing “stress awareness week” programme conducted by the Carl Rogers Institute of Mental Health and School Counselling (CRIMHSC) in collaboration with the Directorate of State and Family Welfare, was conducted

on May 25 at Baptist Higher Secondary School, Kohima.

During the programme, resource person, Kezhazolie Mere spoke to both the students and the teachers about what psychology was, and delivered a brief history about Carl Rogers. He also mentioned about the different physical and psychological symptoms of stress which results in prolonged unmanaged stress. Mere concluded the

talk by giving some tips on how to control and manage their stress such as having a healthy me-time, maintaining a healthy diet, having a set sleep-wake routine, physical exercise, listening to music with good lyrics, gratitude journalling, etc.

KOHIMA, MAY 24 (NPN): The 53rd Ura Academy seminar entered the second day with an orientation programme of Tenyidie teachers at Ura Academy Hall, Mission Compound, Kohima.

In a brief speech, president Ura Academy, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, termed the teaching fraternity as the language ‘missionary’ who will be the carriers of the knowledge of Tenyidie to the students and masses in general.

During the programme, the keynote address was delivered by Kikruneinuo Liezietsu , Jt. Secretary Ura Academy and she stated that as language develops with time, teachers are in dire need to be updated and refreshed as such an orientation program such as this

On the last day of the seminar, the Tenyidie Kephrünuoko Krotho will be organising competitions on debate, story writing, poetry writing, essay writing for the high and higher secondary schools.

DIMAPUR: Tsungiki Village Council (TVC) has vehemently condemned the blatant and irresponsible action where some miscreants burned down the private residence of its chairman, Janthungo Kikon, on May 22.

In a press release, Tsungiki village head GB, Npyingo Kikon and TVC secretary, E Chenithung Kikon described Janthungo as a much respected, honest, responsible and lawabiding member of the village, who has been actively serving the society through various capacities.

TVC said it would not remain a mute spectator and demanded that the law enforcing authority to arrest the culprit(s) at the earliest and award befitting punishment under relevant sections of the law. Failing which, TVC said it would take its “own course of action” and that the law enforcing body would be held solely responsible in case of any eventualities.

ALTNE: Amotsü Lobemo Tsoro-Nichen Ekhung (ALTNE) Tsungiki has vehemently condemned the barbaric fire incident of May 22 at Tsungiki Village, where the residence of Tsungiki Village Council chairman, T. Janthungo Kikon was burned down by some miscreants.

In a condemnation note, ALTNE Tsungiki village chairman, Rhanbemo Kikon and sessional secretary, Chenithung Kikon said the incident was an insult to the “Ekhung” and that such act would not be tolerated. ALTNE Tsungiki has requested the district administration and the law enforcing agencies to immediately arrest and book the culprits under relevant sections of law and award befitting punishment.

It further warned that district administration and the law enforcing agencies would be held solely responsible if it fails to arrest the culprits, thereby causing any further damage of property, physical harm, and Kikon’s life was threatened.

BERLIN, MAY 25 (IANS): Germany has fallen into recession after high prices took a bigger toll on the countrys economy than originally anticipated, official data revealed on Thursday.

The data by Germany’s federal statistical office showed gross domestic product (GDP) fell by 0.3 per cent in the first quarter compared with the previous three months, which also recorded a contraction, reports the Guardian.

The revised numbers confirm that the German economy shrank for two straight quarters -- the technical definition of a recession -- following a 0.5 per cent drop in the three months to December 2022.

Initial estimates released in April had suggested that Germany had narrowly avoided a recession, merely stagnating with 0 per cent growth.

The budget carrier, which is undergoing a voluntary insolvency resolution process, stopped flying on May 3.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) advised the airline on May 24 to submit within a period of 30 days a comprehensive restructuring plan for a sustainable revival of operations, the source at the regulator said.

Addressing a CII conference, Singh said the electricity generation capacity addition is a big challenge, as people are sitting on several projects won under the bidding process.

Singh said that all these projects (power) are won under the bidding process and if they miss the SCOD (scheduled commercial date of operation or deadline to complete the project), then the developer will be banned from participating in project bidding for one year.

SAN FRANCISCO, MAY 25 (IANS): Sam Altmanrun OpenAI has closed a $175 million investment fund focused on empowering other AI startups, with backing from Microsoft and other investors.

The Information reported first about the fundraise, citing a US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing.

The company had earlier said it would put $100 million into the startup fund.

However, the SEC filings show that the fund, called OpenAI Startup Fund I, is bigger than initially expected and is 75 per cent higher than the original plan, the report mentioned.

Representatives for OpenAI did not immediately respond to the report.

The fund, managed by OpenAI CEO Altman and COO Brad Lightcap, raised the money from 14 investors, according to the filing.

Writing to Shah, Stalin drew the Centre’s attention to the issues arising out of milk procurement by the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (Amul) in the Tamil Nadu milk shed area.

Recently, it has come to the state government’s notice that Amul has utilised its multi-state cooperative license to install chilling centres and a processing plant in Krishnagiri district, Stalin said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 25 (PTI): With India making testing of cough syrups before export mandatory from June 1, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has asked specified state laboratories to examine such samples from manufacturers on “top priority and issue the test report at the earliest”.

Cough syrup exporters will have to produce a certificate of analysis issued by a government laboratory before the product is exported, effective June 1, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification on Monday.

The move came amid instances of quality concerns being raised abroad on cough syrups exported

MUMBAI, MAY 25 (PTI): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday urged the non-BJP parties to unite and defeat in the Rajya Sabha the bill related to the Centre’s ordinance on control of services in the national capital.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor was addressing a press conference after meeting Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar,

who assured to support the former in his party’s fight against the ordinance.

The Delhi CM said he will seek time on Friday for a meeting with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi to discuss the issue. “If all non-BJP parties unite, the bill can be defeated in the Rajya Sabha as no party enjoys majority in the Upper House of Parliament,” he said.

“The ordinance has affected the federal structure of the country. Elected governments not being allowed to work by using ordinances is not good for the country,” Kejriwal added.

Pawar, who was present at the press conference, said the right of elected governments to govern needs to be protected and said all non-BJP parties should support the AAP in this matter.

“Kejriwal should also meet all non-BJP parties to convince them. It is our responsibility to persuade everyone - be it Congress or Biju Janata Dal (BJD),” he suggested. Describing national interest as a matter of priority, the former Union minister called for the need to have a dialogue between all non-BJP parties to provide a stable and progressive government when the time comes. Parliamentary democracy needs to be saved, Pawar said, adding that the NCP will support the AAP in this matter.

BENGALURU, MAY 25 (PTI): JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Thursday said he will be attending the inauguration of the new Parliament building in New Delhi on May 28, saying it is a property of the country and built from taxpayers’ money.

The JD(S) patriarch questioned whether it was the office of the BJP and RSS for boycotting its inauguration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to inaugurate the building on Sunday. “I am attending the inauguration of the new Parliament building. It is the property of the country. It is not anyone’s personal matter,” Gowda said. Speaking at the JD(S) introspection

“That magnificent building was built with the tax money of the people of the country. It belongs to the country. As of now 21 opposition parties have said they will not be attending the inauguration ceremony, primarily taking exception to Modi doing the honours rather than President Droupadi Murmu.

Stating that he has many reasons to oppose BJP politically, Gowda, according to an official release said, “I do not like to bring politics in the matter of opening the Parliament building.”

“I have been elected to both houses of Parliament. I have performed duty there in the constitutional framework, and I still am a member (of the Rajya Sabya),” he said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 25 (PTI): The Congress Thursday targeted the Narendra Modi government over rolling out fortified rice under PDS and accused it of going ahead with the decision without ascertaining the outcome of independent research and the ill effects of such rice on the health of 80 crore poor people.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera asked what was the tearing hurry to implement the scheme of providing fortified rice containing prescribed micronutrients and “what relation does the government have with the foreign conglomerate Royal DSM” which has bagged a major contract to distribute the rice in the country He also sought to know whether any quid pro quo was involved. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address in 2021 said the government aims to distribute fortified rice via government schemes by 2024.

Thereafter, a scheme for the distribution of fortified rice, containing prescribed micronutrients -iron, folic acid, Vitamin B12 -- was launched on October 2021 in a phased manner to address the problem of anaemia among women and children.

Congress spokesperson Khera alleged the Modi government rolled out fortified rice under the Food Security Act despite “failed”

pilot projects and multiple warnings by experts, government officials, FSSAI and Niti Aayog advisors.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Independence Day in 2021 made the rather “unusual and unconventional” announcement about implementing the fortified rice scheme despite warnings.

Three days later, NITI Aayog officials began drawing up a plan to universalize rice fortification. But on November 29 that year, Niti Aayog’s member on Agriculture Ramesh Chand raised the concerns expressed by some medical experts about the adverse effect of iron-fortified rice on the health of children, Khera claimed.

This was also mentioned by the director general of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) who called for the need for consultation with a wide range of experts on the effect of fortification of rice on human health before pushing it further, he said.

Snow storms in Mongolia kill 290,000 livestock

ULAN BATOR, MAY 25 (IANS): More than 290,000 livestock have been killed in the Mongolian provinces of Sukhbaatar and Khentii due to the recent dust and snow storms, local media reported on Thursday.

The overall number of fatalities is however, expected to increase since many livestock still remain still unaccounted for, Xinhua news agency quoted authorities as saying.

TALLINN (ESTONIA), MAY 25 (AP): Russia and Belarus signed a deal on Thursday formalising the deployment of Moscow’s tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of its ally, although control of the weapons remains in the Kremlin.

Ru s s i a n P r e s i d e n t Vladimir Putin announced the deployment of the shorter-range weapons in Belarus earlier this year in a move widely seen as a warning to the West as it stepped up military support for Ukraine.

When the weapons would be deployed wasn’t announced, but Putin has said the construction of storage facilities in Belarus for them would be completed by July 1.

Also unclear is how many nuclear weapons would be kept in Belarus. The US government believes Russia has about 2,000 tactical nuclear weapons, which include bombs that can be carried by aircraft, warheads for short-

ISLAMABAD, MAY 25 (PTI): Former prime minister Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and more than 600 leaders and former assembly members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party have been barred from leaving the country, media reports said on Thursday.

Khan and several top leaders of his party are facing cases following the violence after he was arrested on May 9 in a corruption case.

Citing sources within the Federal Investigation Authority (FIA), the Geo News reported that the names of the PTI leaders and its party chief have been added for their involvement in the May 9 violence and desecration of martyrs’ monuments.

However, there was no official confirmation on the development from Khan’s party.

The names have been added to the FIA’s Provincial National Identification List (PNIL) to prevent them from going abroad, the sources said.

The sources claimed that some of the PTI leaders and office bearers tried leaving the country in the last three days, however, they were stopped at the airports.

The list includes Murad Saeed, Maleeka Bokhari, Fawad Chaudhry, Hammad Azhar, Qasim Suri, Asad Qaiser, Yasmin Rashid and Mian Aslam Iqbal. Fawad Chaudhry has

Lautaro Martinez scores 2 as Inter beats Fiorentina 2-1 for Italian Cup title

ROME, MAY 25 (AP): Take note, Manchester City: the bigger the match, the bigger the performance from Lautaro Martinez lately.

After scoring key goals against Benfica and city rival AC Milan to help secure Inter Milan a spot in the Champions League final, Martinez netted twice as the Nerazzurri produced a 2-1 comeback win over Fiorentina to defend the Italian Cup trophy on Wednesday.

It’s the second trophy that Inter has won this season after also beating Milan in the Italian Super Cup in January — when Martinez also scored.

After a couple of matches to finish up Serie A,

Martinez and Inter will be aiming for one more trophy when they face City in the Champions League final on June 10 in Istanbul.

“In all honesty, I am moved, because for a couple of years we have been bringing trophies to this great club and we’ve got to continue this way,” said Martinez, who also played a big role when Inter won Serie A in 2021. “I want to keep contributing for Inter, because that’s what matters.”

Martinez now has a career-best 27 goals across all competitions for Inter this season, having also helped Argentina win the World Cup in December.

He’s also the only player to

have appeared in all 54 of Inter’s matches this season.

The match at the Stadio Olimpico was lively from the start as Nicolas Gonzalez put Fiorentina ahead three minutes in following a lapse by Inter’s defense. A cross from Jonathan Ikone was allowed to float across the area for Gonzalez to knock in at the far post.

Then Martinez took over to put Inter ahead before the break.

KO H I M A , M AY 2 5 (NPN): Naga wrestler, Vekhonielü Curhah, won a bronze medal in the 55 Kg Women’s Classic Style category at the ongoing United World Wrestling (UWW), Asian Belt-Wrestling Championship held at Jizzakh in Uzbekistan.

She is representing the country in three styles including Women’s Clas-

sic Style, Women’s Freestyle and Women’s Qazak Kuresi all in the 55 Kg category.

She along with another Naga athlete participating as a referee at the event, Khrievotuo Nicholas Sekhose, are part of the team of 10 athletes representing India at the event which started on May 23.

Final call on Asia Cup venue to Rodrygo scores late as Real Madrid be taken after IPL final: Jay Shah beats Rayo amid tributes to Vinícius Jr

NEW DELHI, MAY 25 (PTI): A decision on Asia Cup’s fate will be taken on the sidelines of the IPL final, which will be attended by a host of top Asian Cricket Council (ACC) dignitaries, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah said on Thursday.

Pakistan have the hosting rights for this year’s Asia Cup but with Board of Control for Cricket in India deciding against sending its team to the neighbouring country without government permission, PCB chairman Najam Sethi had proposed a ‘hybrid model’ where they will organise at least four games on home soil and India will play their matches at a neutral venue.

It couldn’t be confirmed whether Sethi has been formally invited for the IPL final.

“As of now, the decision with regards to hosting of Asia Cup hasn’t yet been finalised. We are busy with IPL but the top dignitaries of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), Bangladesh and Afghanistan Cricket Board are coming to watch the IPL final.

We will have a discussion and take a final decision in due course,” Jay Shah told PTI. It has been learnt from ACC sources that Sethi’s proposed hybrid model looks like a feasible solu-

tion although ACC had made no formal statements.

According to the model, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Afghanistan play four preliminary matches in Pakistan and India would play all their games at neutral venues, The two India-Pakistan games will also be held in Sri Lanka although the PCB wants them in Dubai.

The weather in UAE in September is not at all conducive for 50- over games although to make the ‘hybrid model’ work logistically, UAE is a far better option for the Asian Cricket Council.

“Asian Cricket Council head Jay Shah will summon an executive body meeting where a formal announcement will take place. The PCB doesn’t mind playing India at a neutral venue.

“PCB would prefer Dubai because it would lead to more gate receipts but it is open to playing in another country (read Sri Lanka) provided the Asian Cricket Council matches the gate receipts amount (USD 0.5 million) that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) received in 2022 from the Indo-Pak games in Dubai,” an ACC source privy to development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The window for the Asia Cup this year is between September 1-17.

Real Madrid’s Rodrygo celebrates by raising his right fist above his head in a stance against racism.

MADRID, MAY 25 (AP): Rodrygo scored an 89thminute winner as Real Madrid defeated Rayo Vallecano 2-1 in a Spanish league match marked by tributes to Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior.

It was Madrid’s first game since the latest case of racial abuse against Vinícius, who considered leaving the field Sunday after being insulted by Valencia fans.

Rodrygo celebrated on Wednesday by raising his right fist above his head in a stance against racism.

He dedicated the goal to his Brazil teammate.

“We’ve gone through

a lot together because we both left Brazil at a very young age,” Rodrygo said.

“We came to this great club and won everything, and it’s very sad to have to go through this situation.

I wanted to salute Vini, he knows that I’m always by his side. We will keep fighting against racism.”

Madrid’s players came to the field wearing Vinícius’ No. 20 jersey, and a huge banner was displayed behind one of the goals with the words “We are all Vinicius. Enough is enough.”

Vinicius did not play because of a minor knee problem. Wearing street

clothes, he came out briefly before the match to salute the fans and his teammates.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in the 31st, with the visitors equalizing with Raúl de Tomás in the 84th.

AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers: India placed with UAE, Maldives and China

NEW DELHI, MAY 25 (PTI): India have been drawn alongside United Arab Emirates, Maldives and China in Group G of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024 Qualifiers.

The official draw of the tournament was held at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Thursday. Group G of the Qualifiers will be hosted by China between September 6 to 12.

The draw saw 43 teams divided into 10 groups of four and one group of three.

Each group will be played at a centralised venue in a

single round-robin format, with the 11 group winners and four best second-placed teams qualifying for the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024.

They will join Qatar, who have received automatic qualification as hosts, to form the final cast of 16 at the tournament, to be played between April 15 to May 3, 2024.

The AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024 will also serve as a qualifier for the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Paris.

The top three teams will directly qualify for

the Olympic Games as the AFC representatives, while the fourth-best team will play in the AFC-CAF Play-off.

AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024 will be the competition’s sixth edition, and India will attempt to make it to the final tournament for the first time.

Police on Tuesday also detained three people accused of verbally abus-

ing Vinícius with racist slurs during a match on Saturday in Valencia at Mestalla Stadium, which will have parts of stands closed for the next five games. Those three were also released from custody.

The 22-year-old Vinícius, who is Black, has been subjected to repeated racist taunts since he arrived in Spain five years ago from his native Brazil.

In Spain, hate crimes are typically punished with one-to-four years of prison time, while crimes against a person’s moral integrity are punished with six-to-24 months behind bars.

U-20 Football WC: Colombia beat Japan 2-1, seal last-16 spot LA PLATA (ARGENTINA), MAY 25 (IANS): Colombia came from a goal down and weathered an avalanche of Japanese chances late on at La Plata Stadium to win 2-1 in the Group C match and sealed their spot in the round of 16 of the FIFA U20 World Cup.

In a one-sided match, Niuland displayed total dominance and won over Phek by 207 runs. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Niuland made the highest total of the tournament by scoring 282 runs in 30 overs losing only 4 wickets.

Afzal Hussain (20 runs), Vishal Sahani (32 runs), and Wahid Ali (63 runs) gave the perfect start for the Niuland team. However it was the blistering knock of Hokaito Zhimomi (122 runs not out) in 77 balls studded with 17 boundaries (4s) and 2 huge Sixes (6s) that helped the team post an imposing score.

Hokaito was well supported at the other end by Jalal Uddin who remained not out on 15 runs.

Lawrence Vero, captain of Phek team fought back by picking 2 wickets but could not find support

from the other bowlers except for a consolation wicket from Deto Rhakho.

Requiring 283 runs from 180 balls , Phek succumbed to another high pressure game as all their batsman failed to rise to the occasion. The only fightback was by Deto Rhakho with 23 runs but it was never enough for a win.

up 7 wickets for to contain Wokha to a manageable 150 for his side to chase.

Mon got off to a shaky start as they lost 3 of their top order batsman cheaply but Shamwang Wangnao 64 runs and Ahon Konyak 29 runs made some worthy contributions to counter the challenge.

Later Phaknyu Konyak also made 14 runs, however they still fell short of the target and lost to Wokha by 5 runs.

For the Wokha bowling unit, Renchio Odyuo and Romokhon Humtsoe took 2 wickets each while Bonthungo Murry and Sulanthung Kithan picked up 1 wicket each to win a close contest. Wokha’s Renchio Odyuo was named the man of the match.

2nd Match: Dimapur beat Tseminyu by 66 runs Defending champions Dimapur won the toss and their plan to bat first was well executed as their batsmen made a solid start with Shamphri Terang ( 37 runs), Joshua Ben Ozukum (30 runs), Hem Bahadur

Chetri (44 runs), Temjentoshi Jamir (21 runs), Tohuka Zhimo (24) and Santosh Mahato (15 runs) all contributing for Dimapur to pose a convincing total of 191 runs to defend.

Nuntilo continued his fine bowling performance for Teseminyu as he claimed 3 wickets while Ntsenlo, Henry and Monu claimed 2 wickets each to bowl out Dimapur in 24.1 overs.

In their run- chase for Tseminyu, the brother duo of Potouzo Kent (43 runs) and Kepesilie Kent (23 runs) gave the team a solid headstart but with the growing run rate, they eventually perished when trying to go out for big hits.

Ntsenlo Semp 22 runs and Monu 11 runs who both remained not out were the other notable run getters for the Tseminyu Team.

With a star studded bowling line- up Dimapur restricted Tseminyu to 125 runs by taking 4 wickets and thereby winning the match by 66 runs.

Tohuka Zhimo took 2 wickets while Renben and Santosh settled for 1 wicket each. With the win, Niuland has qualified for the Semi-finals.
