Rio says NagalandAssam ready for outof-court settlement Four committees to be set up to chalk out modalities Correspondent/PTI

KOHIMA, JAN 24 (NPN): Nagaland Assembly select committee to examine the Nagaland-Assam border issue on Monday reiterated to resolve the longstanding border issue with Assam out of the court. Sources informed Nagaland Post that during the meeting of the select committee, it was decided to constitute four committees to examine and work out the modalities. Each committee will comprise of the local legislators, government officials and civil society organizations. One committee will look into the border issue in

Further, two more patients succumbed to the virus in Dimapur, pushing the death toll to 706 (including 16 non-Covid deaths but with positivity). Dimapur, Peren and Nuiland districts, one for Wokha, one for Mokokchung and one committee for Longleng and Mon districts, sources added. Sources said that union home minister Amit Shah had categorically urged all the states in the region to solve their boundary disputes by August 15, 2022, when the country will be celebrating 75 years of its Independence. Meanwhile, talking to media persons after the meeting, chief minister Neiphiu Rio informed that he, accompanied by deputy CM Y. Patton and NPF legislature party leader TR Zeliang, held a fruitful discussion

with Assam chief minister on the border issue at the latter’s official residence in Guwahati on Sunday. He said that both the states were prepared to settle the border issue amicably out of the court. “Both the state governments are in favour of an out-of-court settlement,” he stated. Rio also said that he and Sarma had also met Amit Shah in Delhi on December 23 last year to discuss about the border issue. Therefore, in order to discuss the modalities, Rio said that a delegation, comprising of representatives from both Nagaland and Assam governments, would be

meeting Shah in Delhi likely by next month. “Our delegations will meet Shah likely in the first week of February to discuss on how to go about it,” Rio said. On the issue of royalty on petroleum and natural gas along the border, Rio said: “If we resolve the border dispute and the issue of royalty, it will be good for both sides as we are going to remain neighbours.” No more district creation: Asserting that Nagaland state motto was “Unity”, Rio said it was not in the interest of the Nagas to further fragment the tribal population. Therefore, Rio reiterated that the state government had decided to not divide any tribal district that was already in existence. “There are demands for division of Mon, Mokokchung, Zunheboto, Wokha and Phek districts. But the fragmentation of tribal districts is not in the interest of Nagas. I appeal to various tribal organisations to understand this policy of

DIMAPUR, JAN 24 (NPN): Aboi District Demand Committee (ADDC) has resolved to impose an indefinite total bandh band from January 25 in protest against the non-declaration of the long pending demand of upgrading Aboi sub-division to a full fledged district. ADDC media cell in a press note asserted that the committee will not remain quite till their demand was fulfilled by the state government, adding that this was a “public demand without any differences and division within the tribe.” ADDC said that the committee also successfully completed its first phase of bandh in Aboi Hq, Chen Hq and Longchang Hq by picketing government offices and restriction on movement of government vehicles. The committee urged the state government to listen to the call made by the common public “without making any excuses on (Cont’d on p-8) any tribal aspects.”

DIMAPUR, JAN 24 (NPN): To protest the imposition of the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has asked Naga youth and student community to refrain from taking part in the upcoming Republic Day celebrations. Federation’s president Kegwayhun Tep and general secretary Siipuni Ng Philo in a press communiqué reiterated that Naga people should disassociate themselves from such celebrations as long as the Central government continued its policy of “militarising our Naga homeland”.

They explained that this was not in defiance of any forces on earth, but the assertion that the voice of Naga people cannot be muted despite continued subjugation by forces reeking of colonial ideologies and practices. They further reminded federating units and subordinate bodies of NSF to comply with the earlier directive to restrict their members from associating with Indian armed and paramilitary forces and also from accepting any form of humanitarian aid from them, adding that such efforts would not be able to

purchase the rights of Naga people nor mitigate the effects of the evil perpetrated upon them by the forces. The duo also appealed to the State government to ensure that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report pertaining to the Oting massacre was made public and the culprits awarded befitting punishments at the earliest. They asserted that NSF stood with the family members of the Oting massacre and all other victims of army excesses in Naga homeland and would continue to strive with them until justice was delivered.

WHO chief warns against talk of ‘endgame’ in pandemic GENEVA, JAN 24 (AP): The head of the World Health Organisation is warning that conditions remain ideal for more coronavirus variants to emerge and says it's dangerous to assume omicron is the last one or that “we are in the endgame”, while saying the acute phase of the pandemic could still end this year — if some key targets are met. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO's directorgeneral, laid out Monday an array of achievements and concerns in global health over issues like reducing tobacco use, fighting resistance to anti-microbial treatments, and risks of climate change on human health. But he said “ending the acute phase of the pandemic must remain our collective priority”. “There are different scenarios for how the pandemic could play out and how the acute phase could end. But it's dangerous to assume that omicron will

D I M A P U R , JA N 2 4 (NPN): Western Sumi Kukami Hoho (WSKH) has expressed apprehension of a “factional clash and social unrest”, which could further escalate into bloodbath, in the three districts of Dimapur, Niuland and Chümoukedima if immediate measures were not taken. Reacting to the statement of ‘declaration’ by Akato Chophi-led group of NSCN/GPRN pertaining to ceasefire, WSKH general secretary X Kawoto Aye in a memorandum, copies of which were marked to Union home minister Amit Shah, Ceasefire Supervisory Board and Ceasefire

Monitoring Group chairman, Centre’s interlocutor for Naga talks, Intelligence Bureau director, governor, chief minister, deputy chief minister, director general of police, GOC-in-C Eastern Command and NGOs/ CSOs, said they viewed the content of the ‘declaration’ very seriously. Observing that some long-pending internal conflicts within NSCN (R) leading to the split, with one group under Wangtin/ Tikhak and another led by Akato Chophi coming into existence, WSKH said the group led by Akato Chophi announced the split and declared “unilateral ceasefire”

DIMAPUR, JAN 24 (NPN): Agriculture and cooperation minister G Kaito Aye inaugurated Static Soil Testing Laboratory (STL), Fertilizer Quality Control Laboratory (FQCL) and Bio Organic Quality Control Laboratory (BOQCL) of Department of

Soil & Water Conservation (DSWC) at the department’s office here on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Aye stressed on having soil testing lab facilities in every district to help farmers determine fertility of the soil. He asked DSWC officials to give importance on testing soil, while encour-

aging farmers in Dimapur to utilise the testing lab so as to maximise quantity and quality of production. He also asked officials to encourage farmers to get their soil tested, besides hosting activities to evince interest among the farmers, adding “Farmers are the backbone of the country”. Later, when asked whether the state government had provided any compensation to farmers who had faced drought-like situation in the State, Aye maintained that the state government had not committed to compensate the farmers. He pointed out that the drought-like situation was a natural calamity and that no institution or govern-

be the last variant or that we are in the endgame," Tedros told the start of a WHO executive board meeting this week. “On the contrary, globally, the conditions are ideal for more variants to emerge.” But he insisted that “we can end Covid-19 as a global health emergency, and we can do it this year,” by reaching goals like WHO's target to vaccinate 70 per cent of the population of each country by the middle of this year, with a focus on people who are at the highest risk of Covid-19, and improving testing and

sequencing rates to track the virus and its emerging variants more closely. “It's true that we will be living with Covid for the foreseeable future and that we will need to learn to manage it through a sustained and integrated system for acute respiratory diseases" to help prepare for future pandemics, he said. “But learning to live with Covid cannot mean that we give this virus a free ride. It cannot mean that we accept almost 50,000 deaths a week from a preventable and treatable disease.” In stark terms, Tedros also appealed for strengthening WHO and increasing funding for it to help stave off health crises. “Let me put it plainly: If the current funding model continues, WHO is being set up to fail. The paradigm shift in world health that is needed now must be matched by a paradigm shift in funding the world's health organisation,” he said.

ment could be blamed for that. He however claimed that in view of the situation, advance supply of seeds and inputs were being extended to the farmers. When further asked about his views on government’s plans for developmental activities at Agri Expo apart from the AC Market, he said that a 150-capacity (men and women) hostel for farmers was under construction and would be completed by March this year. Meanwhile, soil & water conservation, geology & mining minister and NSMDC chairman V Kashiho Sangtam said that the State now had enough soil testing labs and (Cont’d on p-8)

with the Centre on November 19, 2021. While expressing regret for the “unprecedented” split, WSKH however said it was apprehensive about possible outbreak of factional clash. Stating that Akato was a bonafide founding member of many Western Sumi organisations, unions, association, hoho, etc, and responsible for many upliftment works in the society and a brainchild of many creative conducts, WSKH said Akato was one of the most important figures and an asset of Western Sumi areas. As such, WSKH said it would not remain a mute

spectator when one of its most important member was treated unfairly and given step-motherly treatment. Referring to its November 22, 2021 declaration extending full and unconditional support to Akato Chophi, WSKH reiterated the resolution and said the hoho stood firm on its decision. Meanwhile, considering all these impending issues, WSKH appealed to competent authorities to take into consideration the offer for maintaining ceasefire by NSCN/GPRN (Akato) and immediately address the issue of signing a ceasefire agreement and (Cont’d on p-8)

The NVCO strongly suspects that the state government particularly the politicians/cabinet ministers are only supporting and recommending corrupted retired bureaucrats/public servants who had accumulated so much of wealth while in service to be appointed as Upa-Lokayukata and a cabinet minister openly lobby for this type of corrupted retired bureaucrats/ public servants. However, Lokayukta is to check corruption and therefore, the corrupt retired bureaucrats/public servants who were likely to be appointed as Upa-Lokayukta

cannot check the present or retired corrupted public servants. The NVCO strongly voiced to the state government particularly the two-member search committee to find a competent person to be appointed as Upa-Lokayukta where he or she was not having record of corrupt practices and no pending cases against them with scam and importantly not having political party affiliation. Having so much of genuine concern for the appointment of Upa-Lokayukta, the NVCO warned the state government particularly politicians/cabinet ministers not to commit the same mistake as the first Upa-Lokayukta was ap-

DIMAPUR, JAN 24 (NPN): Garbage thrown by pedestrians, houses and shop owners virtually everywhere except at designated places has emerged as the biggest hurdle in keeping the commercial hub of the State clean. collection service was in operation and litter bins were provided for use of pedestrians. But for this to happen, public awareness was required, he added.

He mentioned that more than 140 cleaners were covering more than 90 colonies under the municipal council as well as market areas to keep the

city clean. For cleaning of drains, Ezung claimed that DMC has tied up with colony authorities to sensitise, check and impose fine to those found littering the drains. Yet, he lamented that people still continued to litter. He pointed out that the cleaners who collected garbage from the colonies have been assigned to clean the drains as well. “The sludge that accumulates at a particular place is being removed with excavators (JCB) to make

enough room for the water to flow,” he added. He remarked that undeterred use of polythene bags by residents and shopkeepers alike and which later found their way to drains, blocking them, affected the council’s efforts to keep the city clean. Mentioning that generation of waste was a continuous process as waste was produced each day, Ezung claimed that DMC strived to cope with it through collection, transportation and disposal daily.

of 7 Dimasa Kachari villages

DIMAPUR, JAN 24 (NPN): Dimasa Students Union Nagaland (DSUN) has strongly opposed the bifurcation of seven Dimasa Kachari villages from Dimapur district by the State government while announcing creation of new districts recently. Observing that another new district were created and a tribe was officially recognised overnight by overlooking their appeal, union’s president Faihamti Longmailai and general sec-

retary Hamrongdau Difoe in a press release said they were deeply disheartened that their cries for their rights based on history were being ignored. They said the creation of new districts were an injustice to the whole Dimasa community due to segregation of seven Dimasa villages from Dimapur despite the fact that Dimapur ruins, also called Kachari Rajbari and looked after by Archaeological Society of India (ASI), (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C

MoU signed to setup mini-grids in rural areas

DIMAPUR: In a landmark development, Mon district administration, State government and Mithun Rural Development Foundation (MRDF) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly undertake an initiative to set up solar mini-grids in economically-constrained villages to deliver last-mile access to electricity. MRDF is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) specifically designed to service electricity access needs of North-eastern States and is supported by organisations like Smart Power India (SPI), ONGC Ltd and NABARD. The goal of the initiative is to enable last-mile clean energy access, improve livelihoods, support women entrepreneurs and increase GDP of the State, while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. SPI will play an important role in supporting the entire programme framework and value chain, including design, delivery and facilitating financial and market linkages. The programme envisages to improve access, covering 1,000 villages in the next seven years. The first three

mini-grids will be set up in February in the villages of Longkei, Totok Chingha and Chenwetnyu in Mon district. The MoU aims to align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reduce carbon footprint while generating green jobs over the next 20 years. The initiative aims to encourage use of a clean energy platform to increase household incomes by 1520% and for enterprises by 20% in the targeted villages. The highlight of the MoU is the strong support that the local administration has brought to the initiative.

For the first time, the setup of the mini-grids will aim to develop the community through an Integrated Village Development Programme involving all members of the community and not just the customers. The local administration will facilitate coordination between village councils/ village development boards and MRDF. The district administration will also assist MRDF by coordinating the efforts of various departments like health, education, renewable energy and rural development with the work in the villages.

Mon deputy commissioner Thavaseelan K said, “We fully support MRDF and SPI in their efforts to improve the living conditions of our people in the villages. These clusters are economically backward and decentralised renewable energy (DRE) mini-grid interventions will bring an all-round development to the region as they will integrate clean, highquality and reliable energy with livelihoods, agriculture, health, education and public infrastructure. They will also help in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25-40 tons per village

per annum, which is an encouraging milestone to achieve.” Talking about the memorandum, SPI CEO Jaideep Mukherji and senior director Samit Mitra said they were glad to be a part of the joint initiative that aimed at sustainable socio-economic development through DRE. Stressing reduction of carbon footprint, they said this would require a collective effort from every level of the society. They added that they looked forward to working with MRDF and the State government establish a solar PV-based mini-grid to encourage clean energy generation. MRDF managing director Vijay Bhaskar said the association with the stakeholders was aimed at arriving at a sustainable and holistic model of rural economic development based on DRE mini-grids, which could be implemented and scaled to about 1,000 villages of Nagaland. “We hope that communities can achieve holistic wellbeing as a result of the initiative,” he remarked. This was stated in a press release.

Govt urged to enact law against abuse, corruption

DIMAPUR: State Medical Officer, State Mental Health Institute, Dr. Viketoulie Pienyii has suggested that government should enact law to stop abuse, exploitation, corruption, etc, and also advised youths to be vigilant and remain alert to develop a strong accountability system. A press release by District Field Coordinator, NFI, Vekulu Demo stated that Dr. Viketoulie made this suggestion while speaking as resource person at the seminar on SDG Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institution on January 24, at the office of ARK Foundation, Kohima organised by National Foundation for India (NFI). He also lamented about crimes committed against children and women, corruption, injustice, inequality, unemployment, climatic change etc. According to Dr. Viketoulie, all such social elements results in serious repercussions in the larger society. He therefore, emphasized the need to transfer investment from upper section to less privileged section. He noted that this could create balance in

various classes prevailing within society. He further challenged the youths to take up issues which would lead to sustainable life in future. Debabrata Saikia GUWAHATI, JAN 24 (PTI): Leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia on Monday expressed suspicion that his telephone was being illegally tapped by the BJP-led state government. The senior Congress leader also claimed that such an act was an attempt to “strangle democracy, which is already in ICU”. Talking to reporters here, Saikia claimed that the Pegasus spyware controversy had exposed the illegal tapping of phones of important personalities in the country. The spyware row erupted in July last year after an international consortium of media outlets and investigative journalists reported

that the phones of several Indian ministers, politicians, activists, and journalists were potentially targeted by Pegasus, Israeli company NSO Group’s phone hacking software. “The Pegasus controversy had revealed that the government was tapping phones of leaders of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) movement in Assam. And the Congress had been at the fore of this movement from the beginning,” he said. Saikia said, “I suspect that my phone is being tapped. The government can tap phones legally as well as illegally. All the government has to say is that it is not doing so illegally.” He had expressed similar apprehensions on Twitter on Sunday. “This isn’t only a gross violation of my fundamental right to privacy, but this govt by tapping the phone of the LOP is making another attempt to strangle democracy, Which is already in ICU,” he had tweeted, tagging Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the post.

Tripura violence: SC allows petitioner to file rejoinder NEW DELHI, JAN 24 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Monday allowed the petitioner, seeking probe into recent communal violence in Tripura, to file a rejoinder to the state government’s response, which urged the court to dismiss the plea. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing advocate Ehtesham Hashmi, submitted before a bench headed by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud that “C” grade TV channels indulge in such whataboutery, but this is not expected from a state government in such a sensitive case of communal violence. The Tripura government, in an affidavit, had asked why public-spirited citizens who filed PIL, were silent on West Bengal violence. Citing the state’s response, Bhushan said this does not show it in a good light. After hearing arguments, the bench, also comprising Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, asked the petitioner to give their rejoinder in the matter and scheduled the matter for further hearing on January 31. The Tripura government said: “No individuals or group of individuals pro-

fessionally functioning as public-spirited persons can selectively invoke the extraordinary jurisdiction of this court to achieve some apparent but undisclosed motive.” It also claimed that allegations against it started with planted and pre-planned articles in tabloids. The state government further added that these people were selectively outraged with it, though they remained silent on largescale post-poll violence, which occurred in West Bengal. On November 29, the top court issued notice on a plea seeking independent SIT probe into the communal violence in Tripura. The plea has been filed by Hashmi, through Bhushan

has arrayed Centre, the DGP, Tripura, and the TripuraAgovernment as respondents. The plea claimed that between October 13 and October 27, last year, hate crimes were perpetrated in Tripura by organised mobs. “These included damage to mosques, burning of business establishments owned by Muslims, organising rallies shouting Islamophobic and genocidal hate slogans and delivering hate speeches targeting Muslims in various parts of Tripura,” said the plea. The plea said no arrests have been made of persons who were responsible for desecrating mosques or vandalising shops and delivering hate speeches targeting the Muslim community.

She replied that she likes her because of her commitment to excellence and the balance that she strikes as a sportsperson and as a mother. the whole society. “You all must work keeping in mind how your work can help the country,” the prime minister said while interacting with the Rashtriya Bal Puraskar recipients. Calls on youngsters to support ‘Vocal for Local’

S R I NAG A R , JA N 2 4 (PTI): About 135 militants are present at launch pads across the border and are waiting to infiltrate into India, BSF Inspector General, Kashmir, Raja Babu Singh said on Monday. However, he asserted that the overall situation at the Line of Control (LoC) is “peaceful” and said the number of infiltration bids was lesser in 2021 in comparison to previous years. “The overall scenario along the LoC is peaceful. Since the signing of the ceasefire agreement, there has been a general peace all along the LoC in the Kashmir frontier,” the Border Security Force (BSF) officer said while speaking to reporters here. Giving details on infiltration bids, he said in 2021, 58 attempts were made, in which five terrorists were killed, 21 returned and one surrendered. “There have been reports that 31 infiltrated in 2021, 130 in 2019, and 36 in 2020,” the inspector general (IG) said.

Each child was also given a medal and a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000. The youth are at the centre of all policies being framed by his government, the prime minister said and added that the country feels proud to see that CEOs of all the big companies of the world are young Indians. Calling for support to the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign, Modi said children had played a major role in the success of the Swachh Bharat campaign and asked them to encourage people around them to use Indian goods. “Just like you came forward for the cleanliness campaign, you should also come forward for the Vocal for Local campaign. You count at home, make a list of the products that are not made in India, and urge the people of the house that when a similar product is bought in the future, it

should be made in India” the prime minister said. Noting that women are doing wonders in areas where they were not even allowed earlier, he said this is the new India that does not hold back from innovating and is known for courage and resilience. “Today we feel proud when we see that the youth of India are innovating and taking the country forward.” “Today we feel proud when we see that the CEOs of all the big companies of the world are young Indians and when we see the youth of India achieve laurels in the world of startups,” Modi said. Speaking to many of the children who received the awards, the prime minister praised their grit, determination and passion to make a difference in their chosen fields. He also lauded the children for their participation

BSF Kashmir frontier IG, Raja Babu Singh, addressing annual press conference on Monday.

During 2021, the BSF successfully recovered or seized three AK-47 rifles, six nine-mm pistols, 1,071 ammunitions, 20 hand grenades, two IEDs and 17.3 kg of heroin -- worth Rs 88 crore -- in different operational incidents, he said. The IG BSF said there are reports that “104 to 135 terrorists” are present at different launch pads across the LoC and waiting to infiltrate. “There are also reports that some guides have gone from here and crossed the LoC to that side. So, we

need to monitor them as and when they return. Their families need to be monitored,” he said. Singh said there is a lot of synergy between the army and the BSF. “The more we conduct area dominations, keep watch and surveillance, the more difficult it will be for them to infiltrate. We are putting in all-out efforts so that no infiltration is allowed, that zero infiltration happens,” he said. “As and when anyone is spotted crossing the LoC, he is challenged and if firing

is used, he is killed like the recent killing of a terrorist on January 2,” the IG BSF added. Asked about the Taliban threat, he said Taliban, “there is nothing like that till now, but we are keeping an eye on the developments”. “Nothing concrete has come into notice so far, but we are keeping an eye on it. We are keeping a strict vigil,” he said while responding to another question about the apprehensions of weapons from Afghanistan making their way into Kashmir. On the issue of drones, the IG BSF, said the drone threat is “very real”. “Last year also, drones were noticed, but no one ventured inside our territory. This year, we are taking enough measures, antidrone techniques, we are also getting a few drones, and we will tackle it very effectively,” he said. “There have been attempts to push narcotics from the other side. We have seized it. We have a zerotolerance policy against narcotics,” Singh said.

Amar Jawan Jyoti: Flame stokes political war of words NEW DELHI, JAN 24 (AGENCIES): Never before has a national memorial to soldiers or a national icon sparked so much controversy that the decision to extinguish the 50-yearold eternal flames –Amar Jawan Jyoti – at India Gate or installation of Netaji statue at a canopy once occupied by the British ruler, George V. Earlier, a proposal to install Mahatma Gandhi’s statue there was not considered and then abandoned. The point now is why the statue of national icon like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose be installed there? As India Gate was a memorial for the 80,000 Indian soldiers who died in wars in Europe, Persia, East Africa and Afghanistan; the Jyoti - four flames - was lit at its arch in 1972 by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi to commemorate the victory against Pakistan in 1971, creation of Bangladesh and tributes to the soldiers. The dispute now is sparked by an apparent targeting of the Congress at the height of the elections to UP and four other states. West Bengal chief minister Ma-

The government says that in 1972 though flame might have been lit but the names of 3843 martyrs of the 1971 war were not put. The National War Memorial next to India Gate is the first national monument, Air Marshal BR Krishna, chief of integrated defence staff, merging the flames at NWM stresses. An unseemly situation is developing. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slamming the government says that flames are for our soldiers and would be lit

again. “This is insulting history and memory of the martyrs of Bangladesh war. It is shocking outrage”, says former Congress minister Anand Sharma. Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan says it’s “unnecessary controversy” and the opposition lacks knowledge of history. The Congress is accusing the present government of not giving due to leaders like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi even as BJP appropriates freedom fighters like Vallabhbhai Patel, BR Ambedkar Patel and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Beyond politics people in Delhi are feeling that the

memorial is to Indian ethos and soldiers of the same army regiments whether in the British Indian army or succeeding Indian army. It is the same army that boasts its heritage since the East India Company days. The Jyoti is supposed to be historic and should have continued. Many Hindu shrines, including Badarinath, have jyoti lit continuously for centuries. It is being echoed that now it is not the same jyoti at NWM. The nation has to respect, honour and be proud of its heritage. Doing anything new is not a novelty. Let the nation think, consider, discuss and then do. The government says that dignitaries cannot pay tributes at two shrines. People wonder why suddenly the decision to install the Netaji statue being carved out of black granite in Telangana is being announced without a discussion. The statue of George V was removed in 1968. In 1991, Former prime minister Chandra Shekhar wanted the canopy demolished and a Gandhi statue there. But since the canopy housed a colonial occupier,

who was removed by Indian freedom fighters, a statue of an Indian leader was found inappropriate and insulting. So Gandhi was never given that place. Netaji has been raised to an iconic figure by RSS executive member Indresh Kumar who initiated an event in Andaman to celebrate Netaji freeing the island and setting up the first national Azad Hind government every December end. Prime Minister Modi has taken it forward. Still many within are not comfortable with Netaji statue at the canopy. Most senior leaders feel he should have an independent place and not a “tainted” one. But it is more than that. Modi wants to trounce Mamata Banerjee. In 2021, he tried by having 125th birth anniversary celebrations on eve of Bengal elections at Kolkata’s Victorial Memorial, an incongruous British symbol. Mamata had stolen the show. Now the government wants to install the Netaji statue fast to spite on her. Would that help BJP? Unseemly battles do not behove a great nation. But politics is at new ebb. (Shivaji Sarkar)

Modi government is for the rich: Cong Says budget should focus on reducing widening income gap NEW DELHI, JAN 24 (PTI): Citing a report that stated the incomes of the rich increased and that of the poor declined during the pandemic, the Congress on Monday charged the Modi government is for the rich and said the union budget should focus on bridging the widening income divide. Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi alleged that while the entire country suffered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the poor and the middle class faced more sufferings due to the “economic epidemic” of the Modi government as the gap between the rich and the poor widened further. “The entire country suffered during the Covid pandemic, but the poor and the middle class are also victims of the ‘economic epidemic’ of the Modi government. The credit for digging this widening gap between the rich and the poor goes to the central government,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi. He cited a news report that claimed that incomes of the poor reduced by 53 per cent while that of the rich increased during Covid times. The report showed the widening disparity in annual

household incomes, with the poorest 20 per cent of the population witnessing 52.6 per cent decline in their incomes and the lower middle class comprising 20 per cent facing a decline of 32.4 per cent in their income, while the richest (20 per cent) saw 39 per cent rise in their incomes. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate told reporters that the Modi government is only working for the benefit of the rich and the incomes of 20 per cent poor population have halved and the income of 60 per cent of the population has reduced to its lowest level during the Modi regime. “We categorically and assertively insist that the union budget must focus on bridging this divide.... The union budget should only focus on increasing money in the hands of the poor. The union budget should pay attention on how urban poverty is going up many fold and rural poverty in comparison has gone up,” she said. Shrinate also demanded that the government institute a gross economic mismanagement index to know how badly mismanaged the Indian economy is. Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala alleged that the “Modi government is only for the rich! It is now before us - ‘The poor is poorer and ‘Hum do, hamare do’ is reaping

silver.” “Hit the poor-middle class, Modi government is the government of the rich,” Surjewala alleged. Shrinate said the government is not even admitting the state of the economy and the increase in poverty. She said first an Oxfam report and now the ICE-360 survey, which has been done by the People’s Research on India’s consumer economy, have very categorically stated how the divide and the deep fissures between the rich and the poor in this country are only widening. According to this report, she said, for more than 15 crore households’ incomes have dipped by 53 per cent as compare to 2016 and the incomes for lower middle income group have dipped by 32 per cent, and for the middle income group by nine per cent. So on a broad level 60 per cent of India is today earning less than what it was earning five years back and one survey after the other are showing this. “So there has got to be some truth in how the income divide is widening,” she claimed. “It is also important to point out here that the 20 per cent for whom income has halved under the Modi government, the same population saw their income surge by 183 per cent under the UPA rule from 2005 to 2015, when we lifted 27 crore people out of poverty.

No saint can be CM: Seer on Yogi PRAYAGRAJ, JAN 24 (PTI): A saint cannot be a chief minister as after taking the oath of secularism as a constitutional dignitary, he cannot stay “religious”, a prominent seer said here on Monday, in an apparent reference to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The claim was made by Swami Avimukteshwaranand in his reply to a query on Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s status as a saint and the mahant of Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur. “No man can abide by two pledges. A saint can be a ‘mahant’ but not a chief minister or prime minister. This is possible in the ‘khilafat’ system of Islam in which the religious head also happens to be the king,” the seer, attending the Magh fair here on the bank of Ganga, said. The seer also expressed concern over the alleged mismanagement in organising the Magh fair in Prayagraj this year. “The Magh fair has been greatly ignored this year. Some saints have

Swami Avimukteshwaranand and Yogi Adityanath

gone to extent of threatening fast and self-immolation too. If the leaders are busy in elections, can’t the government officials properly manage the fair?” he asked. On the sudden rise of water level in the Ganga, inconveniencing the saints, Swami Avimukteshwa-

ranand asked, “Why the water level is not being controlled when the government has the mechanism to regulate the flow in rivers?” Owing to the sudden rise in the water level, many people had to shift their tents, he said. On the alleged interference of politics in religion, the seer accused all political parties of making transgression into religion. He said all parties have transgressed into politics and the trend is no longer limited to merely having ties with saints and seers but they are installing their men on key religious positions.

PM interacts with RBP recipients

NEW DELHI, JAN 24 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday urged youngsters to support the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign just as they had taken forward the cleanliness campaign in the country and asserted that the youth are at the centre of all policies being framed by his government. During an online interaction with the recipients of the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, Modi also talked about the unveiling of the hologram statue of freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose at the India Gate and said the “biggest inspiration we get from Netaji is - duty and nation first”. “Taking inspiration from Netaji, you have to proceed on your path of duty for the country,” the prime minister said. Twe n t y - n i n e c h i l dren, including 14 girls, were awarded in six fields - innovation, scholastic achievements, sports, arts and culture, social service and bravery. The Bal Puraskar recipients were awarded certificates digitally using blockchain technology.

Discordant nationalism

A

llegations made by the opposition, that the Modi government is rewriting, re-interpreting or erasing India’s history for political benefit cannot be dismissed outright if recent decisions serve as proof. Besides throwing up controversial claims on ancient history , the leaders of the ruling party at the Centre have also made no bones about bringing a series of amendments to change the basic character of Indian democracy for a one nation, one people and one constitution. The most recent ones involve the dropping of the hymn “Abide With Me” from this year’s Beating The Retreat ceremony of India’s Republic Day celebrations. The move to drop the hymn from this year’s ceremony came days after the Centre’s decision to merge the Amar Jawan Jyoti flame at the India Gate with the eternal flame of the National War Memorial (NWM). The Beating Retreat ceremony is held on January 29 every year as part of the culmination of the celebrations of Republic Day. Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite hymn “Abide With Me” will cease to be played and replaced by the popular rendition of the patriotic song “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon”, sung by Lata Mangeshkar and written by Kavi Pradeep to commemorate the supreme sacrifice made by Indian soldiers during the 1962 Indo-China war. The other decision of the government was to merge the Amar Jawan Jyoti flame at the India Gate with the eternal flame of the National War Memorial (NWM). The Modi government deployed several military officers to defend the move on the ground that merging of the flame was logistical. The other was the unveiling of a hologram statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose installed at India Gate on the occasion of Bose’s 125th birth anniversary on January 23. The BJP move to honour Netaji is appreciated at face value but there is more than meets the eye. In all these moves- dropping the hymn “Abide With Me”; merging the flames of Amar Jawan Jyoti with the National War Memorial and installing a statue of Netaji at India Gate- are the BJP’s determination to change historical events. The dropping of the hymn “Abide With Me” was said to be on the ground of accommodating other popular Indian songs. In 2020, reports had emerged about the hymn being dropped from the Beating Retreat Ceremony and being replaced by poet Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s Vande Mataram. The hymn is always the last piece to be played by the brass bands before the troops recede up Raisina Hill to the tune of poet Allama Iqbal’s Saare jahan se achha. The other decision to merge the flame at Amar Jawan Jyoti was nothing but trying to milk patriotism. Amar Jawan Jyoti was conceptualised and constructed after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 and inaugurated on 26 January 1972. The flame was to commemorate the sacrifices of Indian soldiers in the First and Second World Wars. It was known as the National War Memorial till the Modi government constructed a new memorial with the same name in 2019. There is no debate that Netaji is a giant among freedom fighters who believed in use of force. Trying to appropriate history is an illogical move since it (history) belongs to the people of India and not any party of leader(s). Also there are many issues that are needlessly raised due to the vested interest behind such decisions that only serve to divide the country.

DailyDevotion God’s Overpowering Purpose

I have appeared to you for this purpose… —Acts 26:16 The vision Paul had on the road to Damascus was not a passing emotional experience, but a vision that had very clear and emphatic directions for him. And Paul stated, “I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision” (Acts 26:19). Our Lord said to Paul, in effect, “Your whole life is to be overpowered or subdued by Me; you are to have no end, no aim, and no purpose but Mine.” And the Lord also says to us, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go…” (John 15:16). When we are born again, if we are spiritual at all, we have visions of what Jesus wants us to be. It is important that I learn not to be “disobedient to the heavenly vision” — not to doubt that it can be attained. It is not enough to give mental assent to the fact that God has redeemed the world, nor even to know that the Holy Spirit can make all that Jesus did a reality in my life. I must have the foundation of a personal relationship with Him. Paul was not given a message or a doctrine to proclaim. He was brought into a vivid, personal, overpowering relationship with Jesus Christ. Acts 26:16 is tremendously compelling “…to make you a minister and a witness….” There would be nothing there without a personal relationship. Paul was devoted to a Person, not to a cause. He was absolutely Jesus Christ’s. He saw nothing else and he lived for nothing else. “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2).

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, JANUARY 25, 2022

Post-mortem

Petrol, diesel, gas & electricity to fuel the Naga economy O f late, with the construction of four-lane highways and widening of rural roads, improved connectivity has been ensured across Nagaland. Likewise, the number of vehicles plying on the roads also seem to be doubling by the day. A significant portion of Nagas now own a four-wheeler (if not more). Today, vehicles have become the lifeline because commuting from point to point (whether for official or personal jobs) is becoming almost impossible without one. A rough mental count on the total number of vehicles in Nagaland can be gauged by the number of traffic jammed in long vehicular queues around Dimapur and Kohima. One can also make out the percentage of Naga population on the roads at any time, every day. Further, our fuel consumption pattern vis-a-vis the number of vehicles (both new and used) will make interesting statistics. As a result, dependence on essential fuel and electricity has become the prime mover for the Naga society. What concerns us is that Nagaland still does not have a single refinery nor a self-sufficient power grid to generate sufficient electricity for our own consumption. We are fully dependent on our next-door neighbour State Assam which is a risky proposition we are living on.

T

In case of any eventuality due to unforeseen reasons; the ugly truth is that all energy driven and related activities in Nagaland will come to a standstill. Our vehicles will not move. Motors and engine will not work. In such a scenario, do we have any alternative in place? What if another lockdown is declared and our neighbours shut their supply doors? Therefore, a point for everyone to ponder upon is whether the present supply system of essential fuel or even electricity is sufficient to meet our energy needs? The scenario becomes more uncertain in a time when world nations are shifting towards investing and developing alternate sources of energy. While the central government has made an ambitious target to make India a 100 percent Electric Vehicle (EV) nation by 2030, we are still caught up in the geopolitical dynamics over who owns the land and its minerals in the sub-surface. To reiterate, can we sustain the demand and supply for fuel and electricity in its present form alongside a fast-growing population with high rate of unemployment? This is the moot point we all need to ponder upon. The concern stems out from the fact that the Naga economy is still evolving and in a nascent stage. There is an urgent need to leverage the state’s potential in terms of building

our very own hydrocarbon (oil and natural gas) industry before it may be too late for oil exploration in Nagaland. In the past, Nagas were made to believe that there is abundance of oil and gas reserves in our land. While this may or may not be true, what we were not told is about the business of oil and gas – a subject grossly misunderstood to be as easy as digging a water well or sinking a tube well. For the benefit of everyone and in very simple terms, the oil and gas business is divided into three verticals viz UPSTREAM ,MIDSTREAM and DOWNSTREAM. ‘Upstream’ is about extracting crude oil and natural gas from beneath the ground. ‘Midstream’ is about safely storing and transporting them to safe storages while ‘Downstream’ Sector is about converting crude oil and natural gas into thousands of finished products we depend on every day. In a way, what is discovered in the upstream segment becomes input to feed the downstream segment. Some of the more obvious products are petrol, diesel, kerosene, jet fuels, LPG etc. Almost all plastic and synthetic products has some connection to oil and natural gas. Crude oil will first have to be extracted (upstream) and then fed to refineries (downstream) before finished products like petrol,

lenging which is precisely why oil and gas exploration will not be as easy as we perceive. Let us not forget that it generally takes about 5-10 years to bring an oil well into production. In conclusion and having sufficiently written on the subject earlier; yours truly is of the opinion that the message of urgency is loud and clear. This is an opportune time for all right thinking Nagas, student bodies, tribal Hohos, NGO’s and all public organizations to come together and make an all-out concerted effort to push our government for early industrial economic development. Pending peace talks or on-going court cases should not stall or be a hindrance to economic development of Nagaland. Without bringing in tribalism or factionalism, all of us need to come and stand united on this issue. Together we need to engage, lobby and demand for developing core sectors that will trigger economic activities to generate gainful productive employment and income. With the gift of natural resources that we Nagas are endowed with, oil exploration and production can be a vital link to usher in economic independence, growth and prosperity for the present as well as future generation. Voters: The Dominant Face of Democracy

he assembly elections of five states h ave b e e n a n nounced, but the biggest irony which is being seen like every time is that these elections are issueless and the situations of changing the parties are a common thing. From Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand to Goa, Manipur and Punjab, now the fortune of political parties and leaders are in the hands of the voters. Like every time in these elections also, themain issue is casteism, communal bigotry and attempts to woo voters are weakening the roots of democracy. At present, money and power are becoming dominant traits in elections, politics was once a means of service, but today it is becoming a business, it is a matter of concern and it is weakening the roots of democracy. In the elections of these five states, the voter will have to play a dual role - as the owner of the house and also as the watchman of the house. As a proprietor, it will be his duty to try and see those who are called contractors of public interest and as the watchman of the house; it becomes his duty not only to stay awake but also to be constantly alert. It is the need of this awareness and caution that he weighs the words and deeds of those who want to sit in power on the scales of conscience.

Since he is the one to lose the most and gain the most, he also has the greatest responsibility. Voters should fulfill this responsibility at the individual level as well - by asking themselves what would be the basis for their voting. The first decision the voter has to make is whether he has to vote. Then it has to be decided that he will not vote in favour of the ‘wrong’. When every voter uses his vote very thoughtfully, then only democracy will be strong and only then a strong India can be built. Ahimsa Vishwa Bharti is running voter awareness campaign to make voters aware. The main purpose is to force the voter to think that how criminals get our vote? How do the corrupt that play with the wealth of the nation become our ideals? Why do we vote for the corrupt, opportunists and criminals and then they rule us? We accept these conditions silently. But for how long? How long will we keep being cheated? For how long will we continue to watch the nation being looted as a mute spectator? Change can take place in the society only by the collective improvement of the individual and the system. Unless the hands that govern the law are holy, even changing the law will be insufficient. To strengthen the democracy,

it is necessary to choose the right candidate. Just as criteria are necessary in various examinations, in the same way the criteria of eligibility should be fixed in politics. Vote for those who are honest, free from destruction, free from casteism obsession and communal fanaticism and believe in national unity, human values and social harmony. Just as a person thinks while handing over his daughter’s hand, in the same way while casting his vote, he should cast his vote after considering it. Political parties have started preparing for the elections in their own way. There was no talk of alliances; the strategies for alliances were being prepared. Defection is happening. Various political parties have started manipulating the equations. There is a ruckus in some national parties, while for some regional political parties; these elections remain a question of prestige. Amidst these situations, the voter also has to be aware. Voters should present their role in such a powerful way in the coming election that the political party cannot dare to ignore it after the election. Even political parties should learn that today’s voter is not a puppet of their hand although a strong component of this election

system. This system of king and ruler is a universal truth of world. Methods keep changing. Earlier the king was born from the queen’s womb and now he is born from the ‘ballet box’. That is why the most important aspect in democracy is elections. It is a reflection of the national character. To maintain healthy values in democracy, the health of elections and the active participation of common voters are essential. Voters have to wake up before political parties. All political parties publish their manifestos will make the people rich in five years, every hand will get work, there will be houses for all, roads, schools and hospitals, now there will be competition to provide electricity and water for free. In the newly emerging political culture of freebies people keep taking sweet dreams. How many five year elections were held and so many five year plans were completed but it is the eighth wonder of the world that no goal was achieved in its totality. Every time the voter was cheated, misled. Why don’t his eyes open yet? There was an era when emperors, kings and rulers used to protect their kingdom and subjects by fighting with the strength of their arms and sacrificed their lives for this duty and

diesel, and LPG are made available for public consumption. As mere consumers of the oil downstream industry; our contribution towards the value chain of the oil and gas business is rather negligible. Together, these three sectors of the oil and natural gas industry ensure and sustain the steady flow of fuel and material products that make our lives better, comfortable and safer. While all three segments are vertically independent in terms of activities; the business can be horizontally merged in the sense that an oil Company can be a fully integrated E&P Company meaning the Company has all three verticals. Unfortunately, till date, none of the three verticals has a presence in Nagaland though there is high potential. We must appreciate the fact that the state of Assam commands the position it enjoys today in the E&P Business (upstream to downstream) and is poised to become a major energy supply hub in the region for the nation in the near future. Leaving aside our fuel dependency on Assam, interestingly, there is no record of any systematic oil exploration activity being carried out in Nagaland till date. Our land covers huge tracks of area that is geologically complex, environmentally sensitive and logistically chal-

ts, not new to the word, patriarchy, chauvinism, misogynist, etc whatever word to put for describing implicating at males. Its, has become an ease to implicate everything to males, especially in modern generation society. If something is hindered, especially in gender related agenda, its not new to point at males as in patriarchy, chauvinism, etc. There is a saying, “You educate a man, you educate a man, but you educate a women, you educate a generations”, but what I have observed that this saying is only one side of the coin and

is very irony. The other side of the coin is a trump card to implicate everything that hinders their gender, infact an educated woman should be intelligible, rather than implicating at others. Infact, the modern society emphasize so much on females, that the taboo topic especially on menstruation has become not taboo at all, thanks to print media, social media, etc for sensitizing. Because of that, even males are aware of whats going on in females body (cramps, mood swings etc). But, nevertheless

what I have observed is that opposite gender assume that males don’t know what’s going on with females body especially females period, when modern males are already aware. Obviously males cannot comfortably talk openly, but are much aware now a days. I want the readers, especially our respected sisters, daughters, mothers and all females folks to think positively and questioned themselves (not only to implicate males at everything), but to help the entire society. N. L. Naga, Kohima

ideal. Today the fight is being fought with slogans and notes, elections are being fought – to get power. The one who can give an alluring slogan, who can spend as much money, can only mislead the voter today. That is why not only the political parties have to prepare for the elections; the voters also have to do it. But do we make any preparations? Or are you preparing? The games of political manipulation and distribution of freebies should be happy only to the political parties, but only the awareness of the voter can give pure breath to the nation and democracy and for this the voter will also have to strategize. Why should anyone get my vote? Has the one I voted for lived up to my expectations? Wasn’t the wrong thing influencing my decision to vote? The one I didn’t vote for, has he tried to correct his shortcomings? These and many more are questions that voters will have to constantly ask themselves. Our misfortune is that voter apathy and neglect is the biggest cause of political corruption and criminalisation. The truth is that the job of a voter is not only to vote judiciously, but also to constantly check whether his vote is being used properly or not. The question is not only of the interests of

the political parties, it is a question of the frequent betrayal of the voter. And what is the voter doing to make himself eligible for democracy? Despite the huge budget in the name of development, why do conditions of drought, illiteracy, unemployment, inflation, malnutrition have to be seen? A long chain of such questions should arise in the mind of the voter. The question is also that why political interests often outweigh the interests of the society and the country? The question is also why do situations like demonetisation come in the country? The question is also that when a strong atmosphere is being created in front of the parties which have been raising slogans on corruption and black money for a long time, then why were these parties stealing their faces from this campaign? Will they remove the worries of the poor people in the country who do not even have time to overcome the worries of maintaining their power? Will such political parties build a corruptionfree strong moral nation, which is being accused of corruption every day? The biggest control in democracy should be public opinion, not politics. An open letter to Nagaland government concerning education Dear Home Department Nagaland, I am pleading for our nagamese families and naga children ....please we need to teach foundation maths and literacy in the classroom from February 1st. Surely as we look around with the maskless shopkeepers and many events constantly promoted in the papers - it is safe for our children to be in class. We already follow more rules than anyone else. We cannot ruin their future and continue to raise the teacher’s challenge unless absolutely necessary. Louise Shishak, Parent and Teacher, Patkai Christian College, (louiseshishak@gmail.com)

Exercise democratic right enthusiastically: CEC to voters NEW DELHI, JAN 24 (PTI): Asserting that arrangements have been made for “absolutely Covid safe” assembly polls in five states, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra on Monday appealed to voters in these states to exercise their democratic right enthusiastically. In his message on the eve of the 12th National Voters’ Day, he also said the presence of voters at polling stations strengthens democracy. The Election Commission came into being on January 25, 1950, a day before India became a republic. For the past 12 years now, January 25 is celebrated as National Voters’ Day. Chandra said that holding elections in the past two years amid the coronavirus pandemic had been “extremely challenging”. The Commission, while holding polls, ensured that the vote and the voters were protected. In the recently-held elections to six assemblies and various bypolls, voters defied naysayers and sceptics to turn out in large

numbers to exercise their franchise amid the pandemic, he said. Referring to the elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab and Manipur to be held in seven phases between February 10 and March 7, he said the poll panel has emphasised on increasing the pace of COVID-19 vaccination in these states. In his message, Chandra also referred to the recent poll reforms implemented by the government on the Commission’s recommendation. These include linking voter list with Aadhaar to weed out duplicate entries and giving four dates to young citizens turning 18 to register as voters every year. So far, January 1 of every year was the only qualifying date for those turning 18 on or before that day to register as a voter. Now the youth can register on January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1. He said this National Voters’ Day assumes greater significance as it marks 70 years of the first election held in India.

Nadda said. After the press conference, a BJP delegation led by Union Minister Gajendra Shekhawat met Election Commission of India officials to complain against Sidhu’s principal strategic advisor Mohammad Mustafa for allegedly making communal remarks at a public meeting in Malerkotla. 46% of girls under 15 anaemic in India: Report NEW DELHI, JAN 24 (IANS): About 46 per cent of girls in India under the age of 15 are anaemic, according to a report released on Monday on the National Girl Child Day, annually observed on January 24 to raise awareness to promote the rights, education, health, and nutrition of the girl child across the country. The findings by SRL Diagnostics is based on a total of 8,57,003 haemoglobin tests conducted in the past 7 years, between January 2015 and November 2021. The study shows that 63 per cent of all samples, across all age groups of women, tested positive for anaemia. But in girls less than 15 years, the percentage of samples positive for anaemia was 46 per cent. Of these, 13 per cent were severely anaemic. Further, the study also showed that Assam is the worst affected with 72 per cent of married women being anaemic, followed by Haryana (69.7 per cent) and Jharkhand (68.4 per cent).

were also dropped using drones... They were meant for carrying out some nefarious activity,” Singh said. Taking on his bete-noire and Congress’ Punjab unit chief Navjot Sidhu, Singh said, “Our bravehearts are fighting Pakistan at the borders. Yet, Sidhu wants to hug it out with the enemy.” Singh was referring to Sidhu hugging Pakistan Army Chief General Bajwa during the oath taking ceremony of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan. After resigning from Punjab chief ministership, Singh quit the Congress and floated his own party Punjab Lok Congress and forged alliance with the BJP and SAD (Sanyukt). The BJP’s is paying the role of senior partner in the alliance in Punjab, where it had always played second fiddle in its more than twodecade long alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal.

Sinha sniffs ‘dictatorship’ in BJP’s ‘double engine’ talks PANAJI, JAN 24 (PTI): Trinamool Congress (TMC) vice-president Yashwant Sinha on Monday dubbed the BJP’s oft-re peated phrase ‘double engine governments’ as a way to promote “dictatorship”. The for mer Union minister assured that prepoll promises made by the TMC in Goa would be implemented if the Mamata Banerjee-led party comes to power in the coastal state after the February 14 assembly polls. Talking to reporters here, the bureaucrat-turnedpolitician said, “Sometimes in ‘double engine governments,’ it is possible that one engine goes in one direction, and the other in another direction.” “On a serious note, I want to mention that if the central government of the BJP is trying to emphasize on wanting to run double engine governments then all they want is to run a dictatorship,” Sinha said. He said insisting on ‘double engine’ means the BJP does not want any other party to come to power in states and form government.

“Today, they are talking about double engines with respect to state governments, tomorrow they will talk about triple engine with respect to panchayats. How will this work?,” he questioned. As part its ‘double engine’ campaign narrative, BJP leaders appeal to voters to select the same party (BJP or the alliance led by it, NDA) in poll-bound states as the one ruling at the Centre to ensure better development of their states. Sinha said the TMC’s pre-poll assurances in Goa are doable and the party will implement them when voted to power. The TMC has forged an alliance with Goa’s oldest regional party MGP for the assembly polls.

RAIPUR, JAN 24 (PTI): Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel on Monday accused the BJP of garnering votes in the name of religion and caste to come to power, and claimed the saffron party was doing the same in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh. Talking to reporters at Swami Vivekanand Airport in Raipur before leaving for Uttarakhand, which will also go to polls next month, Baghel accused the central BJP-led government of wanting to take control over states through proposed amendments to the IAS (Cadre) Rules-1954. Baghel is the Congress’s senior observer for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, scheduled to be held in multiple phases over the next two months. To a query on Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray’s comments targeting the BJP on Sunday, Baghel

Bhupesh Baghel

said, “The BJP has indulged in dividing people on religious lines to get elected to power. It did the same thing last time in UP (during 2017 Assembly polls) and is doing the same now. Except this, it does not have any other formula (to woo voters).” “…you (BJP) get votes by scaring people. You garnered votes in the name of religion and caste, but the question is what did the voters get in return? You got the power, but what did the voters get? The BJP talks about Hindus, but what have

Hindus achieved? It is the BJP which has gained, not the voters,” he alleged. But, the people of Chhattisgarh have rejected them (the BJP), he further said. “It (the BJP) tried to sow the seed of poison over the issue of communalism and conversion, but it was badly defeated in the recently held civic body elections in the state. The people have understood their (BJP’s) tricks and intention. I believe that today the main issues (to be addressed) are inflation, unemployment, farmers, youth and security of women,” Baghel added. Notably, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said he has accepted the challenge thrown by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that the Shiv Sena should contest elections on its own, and targeted the BJP over its “politicallyconvenient” Hindutva.

According to Hiranandani, for metro markets the cap should be raised up to Rs 1 crore so that more number of buyers are incentivised and are thus encouraged to purchase a home. According to Pankaj Bansal, Director, M3M India, reduction in taxes and additional rebates provided by the government will encourage more millennials and Gen Z buyers to enter the housing market. “Buyers are looking for better tax rebates. NEW DELHI, JAN 24 (AGENCIES): With demand for residential steadily bouncing back, realtors in the country are demanding consumer friendly measures from the finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the upcoming Budget to boost home sales further. From raising the decades old cap on the deduction against home loan interest to increasing the horizon of affordable homes in key metro markets, most of the demands from the country’s real estate developers are focused on incentivising home purchases. According to Niranjan Hiranandani, Co-founder and Managing Director of Mumbai-based real estate major Hiranandani Group, in the upcoming Budget a stimulus will help the sector’s growth momentum to sustain. “We demand raising the Rs 2 lakh cap to Rs 5 lakh on deductions on home loan. This would not cost more than Rs 5,000 crore directly to the exchequer but, in return, it will help boost the sector to a much greater extent. This is long due as the cap was imposed some two decades ago and its high time for a revision”, he told Business Today. Further, given the high land prices in and around

Rio said. Asked whether Nagaland will get a forensic laboratory, the chief minister said that he will take up the matter with Shah. On R-Day boycott: On Konyak Union and Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation giving a call to boycott Republic Day celebrations in protest against the killings, Rio said they are asking the government only to hoist the Tricolour in public offices. “They can say whatever they want in a democracy but the government will also do whatever it deems necessary,” he said.

They asserted that DSUN would in no way accept this “betrayal” by the State government against “our community” and strongly opposed the decision of bifurcating Dimasa Kachari villages as this division was completely non-consensual, arbitrary and in no way protected the rights of “our community”, but only “murdered” the aboriginality of the entire Dimasa Kachari community. The DSUN leaders therefore demanded an amendment to the State government’s December 20 notification and provide justice to the community, failing which they threatened that the community would take vigorous actions.

Western UP. According to Deepak Kapoor, Director at Noidabased Gulshan Group, while the real estate market sentiment is way more positive this year, when compared to the two pandemic years gone by. Kapoor also feels that its high time the government confers industry status to the sector. “That will give developers ease of availing cheaper credit facilities from financial institutions and banks. Terminating stamp duty and registration charges in the gamut of GST would be highly acknowledged. The sector is counting on the government,”, he said. Dhr uv Agarwala, Group CEO, Housing.com, Makaan.com and Proptiger. com said, to deal with the legacy issues and new challenges, the real estate sector needs support in the upcoming Budget. “The corpus of the government-backed stress fund SWAMIH should be hiked to at least Rs 1 lakh crore. The current corpus of Rs 25,000 crore has already been committed. This will help in completion of stuck projects and bring back the much-needed consumers’ trust in the under construction property market,” he said.

Sangtam encouraged the farmers of Dimapur to avail the benefit of soil testing lab in the district, adding that only minimal charges would be levied for the tests. Sharing the technical report on the occasion, SWC director K Zhekheto Awomi stated that setting up STL and FQCL cost Rs 75 lakh each, while BOQCL cost Rs 85 lakh. the key metro markets, increasing the Rs 45 lakh cap on prices of affordable homes is important. Nearly to-third of young Indians – below 35 years of age are emerging as borrowers of home-loans. These are all active home-loan audiences and jointly, with the age group of 36-45 years - account for 53 per cent of annual originations. Investments in real-estate from these young millennials will only grow with the relaxation in taxes and rebates by the Govt in the Union Budget”, he said.

Ukraine crisis: war fears heighten US orders families of Ukraine embassy staff to leave country WASHINGTON/BRUSSELS JAN 24 (AGENCIES): The State Department on Sunday ordered the families of all American personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine to leave the country amid heightened fears of a Russian invasion. The department told the dependents of staffers at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv that they must leave the country. It also said that non-essential embassy staff could leave Ukraine at government expense. The move came amid rising tensions about Russia’s military buildup on the Ukraine border that were not eased during talks Friday between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Geneva. State Department officials stressed the Kyiv embassy will remain open and that the announcement does

action and COVID-19. Exercise increased caution in Ukraine due to crime and civil unrest. Some areas have increased risk,” the department advised. The travel advisory for Russia was also changed: “Do not travel to Russia due to ongoing tension along the border with

Ukraine, the potential for harassment against U.S. citizens, the embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia, COVID-19 and related entry restrictions, terrorism, harassment by Russian government security officials, and the arbitrary enforcement of local law.”

NATO said Monday that it’s putting extra forces on standby and sending more ships and fighter jets to eastern Europe, as Ireland warned that new Russian war games off its coast are not welcome given tensions over whether President Vladimir Putin intends to attack Ukraine. The US-led military organisation said it is beefing up its “deterrence” presence in the Baltic Sea area. Denmark is sending a frigate and deploying F-16 war planes to Lithuania; Spain will also send warships and could send fighter jets to Bulgaria; and France stands ready to send troops to Romania. Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said NATO will

“take all necessary measures to protect and defend all allies.” He said: “We will always respond to any deterioration of our security environment, including through strengthening our collective defence.” The announcement came as European Union foreign ministers sought to put on a fresh display of resolve in support of Ukraine, and paper over concerns about divisions on the best way to confront any Russian aggression. “We are showing unprecedented unity about the situation in Ukraine, with the strong coordination with the US,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who is chairing their meeting, told reporters in Brussels.

not constitute an evacuation. The move had been under consideration for some time and does not reflect an easing of U.S. support for Ukraine, the officials said. In a statement, the State Department noted recent reports that Russia was planning significant military action against Ukraine. However, the Russian Foreign Ministry has accused NATO countries of escalating tensions around Ukraine with disinformation. The State Department added: “The security conditions, particularly along Ukraine’s

Burkina Faso’s President is held by mutinous soldiers OUAGADOUGOU, JAN 24 (AP): Burkina Faso’s President Roch Marc Christian Kabore is being held by mutinous soldiers, two of the rebellious soldiers told The Associated Press by phone early Monday. They did not say where Kabore is being held, but said he is in a safe place. Gunshots were heard late Sunday night near the president’s residence and in the early hours of Monday a battle took place at the presidential palace while a helicopter flew overhead. The roads of the capital were empty Sunday night except for checkpoints heavily guarded by mutinous soldiers. State news station RTB was heavily guarded on Monday morning. Fighting began on Sunday when soldiers took control of the Lamizana Sangoule military barracks in the capital, Ouagadougou. Civilians drove into town in a show of support for the rebellion but

were broken up by security forces firing tear gas. The mutiny came a day after a public demonstration calling for Kabore’s resignation, the latest in a series of anti-Kabore protests as anger has mounted over his government’s handling of the Islamic insurgency. The government has not made any statements since Sunday when Minister of Defence Aime Barthelemy Simpore told state broadcaster RTB that a few barracks had been affected by unrest not only in Ouagadougou but in other cities, too. He denied, however, that the president

had been detained by the mutineers, even though Kabore’s whereabouts was unknown. “Well, it’s a few barracks. There are not too many,” Simpore said. Kabore had been leading Burkina Faso since being elected in 2015 after a popular uprising ousted longtime strongman President Blaise Compaore who was in power for nearly three decades. Kabore was reelected in November 2020 for another five-year term, however, frustration has been growing at his inability to stem the spread of jihadist violence across the country.

Intercepted 2 ballistic missiles over Abu Dhabi: UAE DUBAI, JAN 24 (AGENCIES): The United Arab Emirates intercepted two ballistic missiles claimed by Yemen’s Houthi rebels over the skies of Abu Dhabi early Monday, authorities said, the second attack in a week that targeted the Emirati capital. The missile fire further escalates tensions across the Persian Gulf, which previously had seen a series of assaults near — but never indisputably on — Emirati soil amid Yemen’s yearslong war and the collapse of Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers. American troops at Al-Dhafra Air Base in the capital took shelter in bunkers there during the attack. Videos on social media showed the sky over Abu Dhabi light up before dawn Monday, with what appeared to be interceptor missiles racing into the clouds to target the incoming fire. Two explosions later thundered through

the city. The videos corresponded to known features of Abu Dhabi. The state-run WAM news agency said that missile fragments fell harmlessly over Abu Dhabi. The Emirates “is ready and ready to deal with any threats and that it takes all necessary measures to protect the state from all attacks,” WAM quoted the UAE Defense

Ministry as saying. The missile fire disrupted traffic into Abu Dhabi International Airport, home to the long-haul carrier Etihad, for about an hour after the attack. Houthi military spokesman Yehia Sarei claimed the attack in a televised statement, saying the rebels targeted several sites in the UAE with both Zulfiqar ballistic missiles and drones, including Al-Dhafra Air Base. He warned the UAE would continue to be a target “as long as attacks on the Yemeni people continue.” “We war n foreign companies and investors to leave the Emirates!” Sarei shouted from a podium. “This has become an unsafe country!” The Dubai Financial Market dropped 2% after the attack, with nearly every

Thousands march in Washington against Covid vax mandates WASHINGTON, JAN 24 (IANS): Thousands of Americans from across the country gathered in Washington D.C. for a march against Covid-19 vaccine mandates and other pandemic restrictions, as people were frustrated and fatigued by the recent surge in cases and the overall health crisis. During the march on Sunday called “Defeat The Mandates: An American Homecoming”, protesters walked from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. to decry Covid-19 mandates, reports Xinhua news agency. The march was billed as a protest of vaccine mandates, vaccine passports, vaccines for children, and other pandemic requirements and restrictions.

Thousands of people gathered in the center of the US capital on January 23, 2022.

Among those marching were firefighters, teachers, first responders, antivaccine activists and other groups. “We are gathering together in peace and solidarity for the preservation of personal sovereignty and to STOP medical coercion, dis-

crimination and mandates,” organizers of the march said on the event’s website. The march came just a week after Washington D.C.’s vaccine mandate, which requires patrons of indoor businesses to show proof of vaccination, took

effect, in response to a surge in Covid-19 cases and the highly infectious Omicron variant. The march also came after US Supreme Court earlier this month blocked the Biden administration’s vaccine-or-test mandate for large businesses amid an increasingly heated nationwide debate on antipandemic regulations. In a 6-3 decision, the conservative-majority in the high court said the White House overstepped its authority by seeking to impose the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) rule requiring workers at US businesses with 100 or more employees to either get vaccinated or submit a negative Covid-19 test weekly. The court’s decision came as Americans are be-

coming intensely divided over coronavirus-related measures, and some are fed up and frustrated by the strain the pandemic has put on daily life. At a press conference last week, President Joe Biden acknowledged that “there’s a lot of frustration and fatigue in this country” due to the pandemic. “I know that after almost two years of physical, emotional, and psychological weight of this pandemic, the impact it’s had on everyone, for many of us, it’s been too much to bear,” Biden told reporters. But Biden insisted that the US has made great progress in the fight against pandemic, and the administration will stick with vaccination efforts “because vaccinations work”.

At Al-Dhafra, which hosts both American and British forces, U.S. troops took shelter in bunkers during the attack, the U.S. Air Force’s Mideast command said. Al-Dhafra is home to the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing and has seen armed drones and the F-35 stealth fighters stationed there. “U.S. military forces successfully reacted to multiple inbound threats during an attack near Abu Dhabi,” the Air Force said, without elaborating. Videos on social media suggested outgoing interceptor fire came from the base. The U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi later issued a security alert to Americans living in the UAE, warning citizens to “maintain a high level of security awareness.”

tended by representatives of the EU, the US, Britain, France, Italy and hosts Norway. The three-day talks opened on Sunday with direct meetings between the Taliban and civil society representatives. A joint statement tweeted overnight by Zabihullah Mujahid, the Afghan deputy culture and i n f o r m a t i o n m i n i s t e r, following the talks reads that “participants of the meeting recognized that understanding and joint cooperation are the only solutions to all the problems of Afghanistan,” and emphasized that “all Afghans need to work together for better political, economic and security outcomes in

the country.” The United Nations has managed to provide some liquidity and allowed the Taliban administration to pay for imports, including electricity. But the UN has warned that as many as 1 million Afghan children are in danger of starving and most of the country’s 38 million people are living below the poverty line. Faced with the Taliban’s request for funds, Western powers are likely to put the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan high on their agenda, along with the West’s recurring demand for the Taliban administration to share power with Afghanistan’s minority ethnic and religious groups.

Yang added that the capital city should work to improve animal welfare and raise awareness of the issue. Dog meat consumption has long been at the centre of controversy here, as it has been part of the country’s cuisine for centuries. South Korea’s Animal Protection Law aims to prevent the cruel slaughter of dogs and cats, but it does not ban the consumption of dog meat. Public interest in the matter has grown over recent years with a sharp increase in the population of those who raise pets.

biggest movie ever, Spidey’s latest adventure has done especially well in the U.K. -- Holland’s birthplace -- amassing $116 million to date. Other top-earning territories include Mexico with $73.4 million, South Korea with $60.6 million and France with $59.9 million. It’s notable that “No Way Home” has managed to shatter records and smash expectations without playing in China, which is the world’s biggest moviegoing market. (Reuters)

DUBAI, JAN 24 (PTI): Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was on Monday named ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year while England Test captain Joe Root took home the top honours in the red-ball category, beating competition from, among others, Indian offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Babar’s team-mate and left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi won the Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year. He was bestowed the honour for taking 78 wickets across formats in 36 internationals at an average of 22.20 in 2021. The 27-year-old Babar scored 405 runs in six games at an average of 67.50 in 2021. He was the second-highest run-scorer with 228 runs and was the Player of the Match in both of Pakistan’s wins in the 2-1 series victory against South Africa. The architect of Pakistan’s chase of 274 in the first ODI, Babar made a century and laid the foundation with an 82-ball 94 in the final ODI where the

He accumulated 177 runs in three games but found no support as none of the other batters managed to score more than 100 in the series. Babar’s best performance this year came in a losing cause in the final ODI against England. Walking in to bat early in the innings, Babar

Liverpool edge closer to City, Chelsea back to winning ways

LO N D O N, JA N 2 4 (AGENCIES): Liverpool took advantage of Manchester City’s dropped points with a 3-1 victory at Crystal Palace on Sunday, taking a small bite out of City’s commanding lead of the Premier League. It was far from vintage form for Liverpool who led 2-0 after a dominant first half but needed a late penalty by Fabinho to quell a stirring Palace fightback at Selhurst Park. Third-placed Chelsea got back to winning ways with a 2-0 home victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge with an exquisite strike by Hakim Ziyech setting them on their way to a first victory in five league games. Manchester City were denied a 13th successive league win on Saturday in a 1-1 draw at Southampton and now lead Liverpool by nine points having played a game more. Chelsea are 10 behind City but have played a game more. Arsenal missed an op-

12th draw of the season. Goals by Virgil van Dijk and Alex OxladeChamberlain put Liverpool in charge at Selhurst Park. But Palace grew in belief after the break and when Odsonne Edouard tapped in after 55 minutes

they looked capable of salvaging something until a controversial late penalty awarded when Diogo Jota collided with Palace keeper Vicente Guaita. “A big three points today for us, really big,” Liverpool manager Juergen

Klopp said, although he played down the significance of the win in the title race. “The distance is too far to talk about it but we don’t have to. We just need to win football matches. Each Premier League game is difficult like we saw today,” Klopp said. Chelsea recorded a third win this month against Tottenham, including two in the League Cup semifinal, to get back on track after a worrying slump in league form. They were far too good for the visitors but had to wait until Ziyech’s superb curled effort two minutes after the restart to go ahead. Thiago Silva made it 2-0 shortly after and Chelsea could have won by more. Harry Kane did have a first-half goal disallowed for Tottenham but they surrendered their unbeaten league record under Antonio Conte in rather tame fashion. “We were working extremely hard for it and it

was a tough match,” said Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, who was celebrating one year in charge of the club. “The effort was outstanding and it was a deserved win. “It is so hard to create chances against them but we were relentless and kept on believing.” While Tottenham have slipped to seventh with 36 points, they have games in hand over all the teams battling for fourth spot. Arsenal edged above them on goal difference but were disappointing as they could find now way past Burnley. “To win this match you need to have a different level of quality,” said manager Mikel Arteta, whose side were booed off at the end and have endured a disappointing January. The Premier League now takes a two-week winter break with the focus switching to the transfer window that closes on Jan. 31. Action resumes on Feb. 5.

Matteo Berrettini

MELBOURNE, JAN 24 (IANS): Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini of Italy rode his luck to advance to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open with a 7-5, 7-6(4) 6-4 win against 30-year-old Spanish stalwart Pablo Carreno Busta at the Melbourne Park here. T h e wo r l d N o. 7 earned a crucial first-set break, which set him on course for his maiden Australian Open quarterfinal appearance in a late Sunday game. With Carreno Busta, ranked 21st in the world, serving at 5-5 in the first set, Berrettini benefited from two dead netcords in the game to break to love. He then slammed consecutive aces in the next game to close out the set 7-5. Berrettini said he was delighted to make his first quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open after he was forced to withdraw in Round 4 last year due to an abdominal injury in the match against Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas. “It was really tough last year. I really wanted to play, but I couldn’t with the tear in the ab,” Berrettini was quoted as saying by atptour.com. “But I believe there is a reason for everything that happens and I’ve been wishing to come back as soon as possible and the way I won today shows how much I care about this tournament.” Berrettini will take on a resurgent Gael Monfils of France who emerged a 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3 winner against Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic. “I was really precise with my serving and he wasn’t reading my serve, which is why I hit a lot of aces,” Berrettini said. “My serve percentage was high, which was important. I felt I had more energy going into the third set. When my serve is working it’s always good for my tennis.” This was 25-year-old Berrettini’s first straightsets victory of the tourna-

ment, having gone four sets with Americans Brandon Nakashima and Stefan Kozlov in the first two rounds. He then won a gruelling fifth-set tie-break against Spaniard teenager Carlos Alcaraz in the third round. Berrettini slammed 57 winners, including 28 aces, against Carreno Busta in the two-hour, 22-minute match. He put 77 per cent of first serves into play and won 87 per cent of firstserve points and 57 per cent of second-serve points. The Italian has now reached the quarterfinals at all four Grand Slams, the 10th active player to achieve the feat. He is also the fourth Italian man to reach the last eight in Melbourne. Berrettini holds a 2-0 ATP edge over Monfils, including a fifth-set tie-break win at the 2019 US Open quarterfinals.

DUBAI, JAN 24 (IANS): India opener Smriti Mandhana on Monday was named as ICC women’s Cricketer of the Year for 2021. After being named in the ICC’s women’s T20I team of the year, Smriti has now won the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Trophy awarded to the ICC women’s cricketer of the year for the second time after 2018. The left-handed opener beat competition from Tammy Beaumont of England, Lizelle Lee of South Africa and Gaby Lewis of Ireland to clinch the honour. Despite India enduring a difficult 2021, Smriti’s stock continued to rise this year, scoring 855 runs in 22 international matches at an average of 38.86 with one century and five halfcenturies. In the limited-overs series against South Africa where India won just two of the eight matches at home, Smriti played a major role in both wins. She made 80 not out as India chased down 158 in the second ODI that helped them level the series and scored 48 not out to win the final T20I. Smriti was in good touch in the multi-format series against Australia, starting with the ODI series where she scored 86 in the second match. She compiled a brilliant century in the only Test (the first of her career), and was awarded the Player of the Match for the same. She scored her second T20I fifty of the year in the final T20I, though India fell short and lost the series 2-0. She made India’s first-ever pink-ball Test even more memorable by smashing her maiden century in the longest format. The left-hander played her natural game to begin with, and scored a run-a-ball half-century, playing with caution under the lights. Smriti was caught on 80, but was given a reprieve after replays showed Ellyse Perry had overstepped. She made the most of the lifeline, reaching her first Test century in style with a boundary. Her innings finally came to an end at 127, after putting India in a strong position. The match ended in a draw, and Mandhana was declared the Player of the Match.
