Covid in India may be entering endemic stage
NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (AGENCIES): COVID-19 in India may be entering some kind of stage of endemicity where there is low or moderate level of transmission going on, chief scientist of the World Health Organisation Dr Soumya Swaminathan said. The endemic stage is when a population learns to live with a virus. It’s very different from the epidemic stage when the virus overwhelms a population. In an inter view to Karan Thapar for news website The Wire, Swaminathan said given the size of India and heterogeneity of population and immunity status in different parts of the country, it is “very very feasible” that the situation may continue like this with ups and downs in various parts of the nation. “We may be entering some kind of stage of endemicity where there is low level transmission or moderate level transmission going
on but we are not seeing the kinds of exponential growth and peaks that we saw a few months ago,” she said. “As far as India is concerned that seems to be what is happening and because of size of India and heterogeneity of population and immunity status in different parts of country in different pockets, it is very very feasible that the situation may continue like this with ups and downs in different parts of the country, particularly where there are more susceptible population, so those groups who were perhaps less affected by first and second waves or those areas with low levels of vaccine coverage we could see peaks and troughs for the next several months,” she said. She said she hopes that by the end of 2022 “we would be in that position that we have achieved vaccine coverage, say 70 per cent, and then countries can get back to normal”.

On prevalence of Covid among children, Swaminathan said parents need not panic. “We can take from the sero survey and what we learnt from other countries also that while it is possible that children could get infected and transmit, children luckily have very mild illness most of the time and there is a small percentage that gets sick and get inflammatory complications and few will die but much much less than the adult population…But it is good to prepare… preparing hospitals for paediatric admissions, paediatric intensive care is going to serve
our health system in many ways for other illnesses children have but we should not panic about thousands of children crowding into ICUs,” she said. On use of drugs like Remdesivir, HCQ or Ivermectin for treatment, she said as of now, there is no evidence that HCQ or Ivermectin have any role to play in reducing mortality or morbidity in people infected with the virus or actually preventing people from getting infection, so therefore there are no grounds on which recommendations can be made in use of either of these drugs for treatment or prevention. “Solidarity trial showed Remdesivir does not reduce mortality, it may have a marginal benefit in subgroup of patients who are ill enough to need oxygen but not ill enough to be on ventilation so there may be a marginal benefit but certainly Remdesivir does not do much
in stage of moderately or severely ill patients. It is also very expensive. Drugs like Dexamethasone and Oxygen are the two essential ones that save lives,” she added. On clearance to Covaxin, she said she is fairly confident that the WHO’s technical group will be satisfied to give Covaxin clearance to be one of its authorised vaccines and that could happen by mid-September. “The Bharat Biotech submitted their data in the third week of July which was the first data set, then there was an updated data set that came in the middle of August. The committee has gone back to the company with some questions which they must be in process of answering now. I think the technical advisory group that ultimately approves will meet in the first 10 days of September and so we are hoping it happens soon after that,” she said.

Naga Tribunal may not be required, says Nagaland Dobashis’ Association
D I M A P U R , AU G 2 4 (NPN): Nagaland Dobashis’ Association (NDA) has appealed to the State government to enact and insert the Third Amendment Act, 1984 in the Nagaland Code at the earliest and pave way for constituting customary courts in consonance with the customary practices and usages of the Nagas. “This will undoubtedly strengthen the function and essence of the courts in dispensing justice to the people, and the purpose of establishing Naga Tribunal may not be required,” it added. In a press note, NDA NDA general secretary R KemerioYanthan stated that the Third Amendment Act, 1984 failed to find a page in the ‘Nagaland Code’ till date, which might have delayed or hampered constituting the customary courts in Nagaland. Mentioning that Naga(Cont’d on p-8) land, as per the third Amendment Act, 1984 of ‘the Rules for Administration of Justice and Police in Nagaland 1937’, chapter IVA, should have three courts viz, i) village courts, ii) subordinate district customary courts and

MUMBAI, AUG 24 (PTI): Union minister Narayan Rane was arrested on Tuesday over his controversial remarks against Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, which triggered a political row and protests. After his arrest, Rane was taken to Mahad in Raigad district where he was likely to be produced before a court, police sources said. FIR at Mahad was registered under IPC sections 189, 504 and 505. The arrest followed Rane’s statement targeting Thackeray in Raigad district during the Jan Ashirwad Yatra on Monday. “It is shameful that the chief minister does not know the year of independence. SUD: Extending support to NFHRCC resolution, the Sangtam Union Dimapur (SUD) urged the state government to respond to the cry of its people by making the foot hill road pliable. SUD president Nukshiba Sangtam and asst. general secretary Mongli Sangtam maintained that foothill road, which affects districts of Dimapur, Wokha, Mokokchung, Zunheboto and the Eastern Nagaland, was a ‘people’s Project’ and would benefit all the Nagas in general. SUD affirmed that it would be forced to join the indefinite agitation as resolved unanimously by all the affected tribes in the event of state (Cont’d on p-8) government’s failure to take action.
ing to customs and traditions of Nagas. Regarding documentation of customary practices and usages, he said the association strongly supported the concept as it would uphold the practices and usages of customs and traditions for the younger generations. Informing the government that all tribes of Nagaland had documents of historical practices regarding customs and traditions, NDA said the records were well maintained by all customary courts. However, as codifications of customary usages might require wider consultations and insights because, once these were codified and became law, the very essence of customary nature would vanish and end up in the hands of experts, the association said it left the matter to the good wisdom of policy makers. The association regretted that Nagaland, which was born out of unique customs and traditions, failed to give due acknowledgments to the two institutions that had been instrumental in bringing the State thus far.

LH, SUD, KUD back NFHRCC 30-day ultimatum on govt DIMAPUR, AUG 24 (NPN): Lotha Hoho (LH), Sangtam Union Dimapur and Konyak Union Dimapur have joined other CSOs to express support for the Nagaland Foothills Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC)’s 30-day ultimatum served on the state government.” In a press release, LH chairman Mhondamo Ovung and general secretary S Abenthung Ngullie questioned why was the state government not bothered about foothill road, which was the lifeline of the border districts including Dimapur, Wokha, Mokokchung, Longleng, Mon and even Zunheboto and Tuensang districts.
iii) district customary courts, the association pointed out that the village courts were the only courts constituted by the State government till today. NDA claimed that the customary courts in Nagaland had been functioning for over 120 years, safeguarding the age-old culture and tradition by adjudicating civil and criminal cases, besides those customary in nature, though not formally recognised/constituted by the Government. It said performances of the customary courts could be best understood by the remarks made by visiting high officials during the British era. While appreciating the State government’s initiative to establish Naga Tribunal to adjudicate cases according to customary practices, NDA however, suggested to the government to consider the views of customary custodians before that. NDA emphasised that by virtue of the nature of the services the customary courts dispensed, they deserved to be given due recognition in matters relat-
KUD: Konyak Union Dimapur (KUD) while extending “full support” to NFHRCC expressed the need for Nagaland have a proper foothill road connecting all parts of Nagaland. KUD therefore, urged all irrespective of tribes to support the NFRCC demand. The union affirmed that it was willing to participate in any course of action to make the demand of foothill road into reality.

Tension started after one personnel of the Assam Police camp allegedly misbehaved with a man from Meghalaya. DIPHU (ASSAM), AUG 24 (PTI): A group of people from Meghalaya on Tuesday allegedly damaged a bunker of the Assam police near the inter-state border during a protest, a senior police official of West Karbi Anglong district of Assam said. Senior police officers of both states have rushed to the area and brought the situation under control. Tension started at the Umlapher area in the morning after one personnel of the Assam Police camp allegedly misbehaved with a man from the bordering state on Monday night at
a checkpoint, SP of West Karbi Anglong district A Basumatary said. There is no restriction on crossing the interstate border. In protest against the “ill-treatment”, a group of people from Meghalaya gheraoed the Assam Police camp at Umlapher and some of them damaged a bunker of the camp. The West Karbi Anglong superintendent of police rushed to the spot and held discussions with his counterpart of neighbouring Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya. The situation
was defused and normalcy restored, “It was a result of a misunderstanding. Everything is peaceful now,” Basumatary told PTI. Meghalaya was carved out of Assam as a separate state in 1972. The problem between the two states started when Meghalaya challenged the Assam Reorganisation Act of 1971, which gave Blocks I and II of the Mikir Hills or presentday Karbi Anglong region to Assam. Meghalaya contends that both these blocks formed part of the erstwhile United Khasi and Jaintia Hills district when it was notified in 1835. At present, there are 12 points of dispute along the 733-km Assam-Meghalaya border. The chief ministers of the two states had held two rounds of talks since July at the end of which it was decided to set up two regional committees to resolve the vexed border disputes in a phased manner.

BALLIA (UP), AUG 24 (PTI): RSS-affiliate Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) on Tuesday warned of a nationwide agitation from September 8 if the Centre fails to act on its demands on farm laws and MSP by the end of this month. Minimum Support Price (MSP) should be decided on the basis of cost, and a new law should be formulated, keeping in mind the concerns raised by farmers, to resolve the dispute arising out of the new farm laws, it said. “For these demands, a nationwide symbolic dharna will be organised on September 8. The Modi government has been given time till August 31 to act on the demands. If it does not take a positive stand on our demands, then after the dharna on Sept 8, a decision will be taken on further steps,” BKS treasurer Yugal Kishore Mishra said. “Farmers do not get a remunerative price for their produce. MSP is not remunerative,” he added that his organisation was being compelled to agitate because of this. “RSS does not run the Modi govt, otherwise our organisation would not have to resort to agitation. No govt has been serious on issues that are in farmers’ interest,” BKS leader said.
KO L K ATA , AU G 2 4 (PTI): Trinamool Congress Tuesday lashed out at the newly unveiled National Monetisation Pipeline calling it a “dangerous bid” by the “bankrupt” Narendra Modi government to raise money by gradually handing over sectors like rail, road, airport, mining to the corporates. TMC deputy leader in Rajya Sabha, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy told a press meet here that the National Monetisation Pipeline is an “unprecedented anti-people move” which did not figure in the BJP election manifesto for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. There had neither been any discussion in the Parliament about the move, Roy, who is also TMC chief whip in Rajya Sabha, said. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had unveiled a four-year NMP worth Rs 6 lakh crore on Monday. “The NMP is a dangerous bid by the bankrupt Modi government ... Na-

tional highways measuring 26,700 km will be privatised, along with 400 rail stations, 150 trains. a staggering 42,300 km transmission line, 8000 km-long GAIL pipeline, 4000 km-long oil pipeline, BSNL and MTNL towers are going to be handed over to corporates for 25-30 year lease which will be extended afterwards,” Roy said quoting from some documents. Referring to the provision in the NMP for extension of the lease, he said “The Modi government will be there till 2024. How can it decide what wil be done after the next Lok Sabha
elections?” The lease will become a perpetual lease, he claimed and added that a total 160 coal mining projects, 21 airports and 31 ports will be handed over to private companies in a similar manner, Roy said. Expressing outrage that such a central policy had been announced on the 75th year of Independence and terming it an “unprecedented anti-people move”, he said the Modi government has earned the moniker of “government of corporates, for the corporates and by the corporates.” Describing the situation as an “economic disaster”, the TMC MP said “While the Modi government is selling off everything to raise money to meet the Centre’s financial bankruptcy, there is no explanation why the central vista project is being commissioned at a cost of Rs 20,000 crore and Rs 190 crore is being spent to build new house for the vice-president”.
NHRC seeks report on action taken to end child labour NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (PTI): The NHRC on Tuesday said it has taken a serious view of the “contradictory reports” from authorities in Rajasthan in connection with a 2019 complaint that alleged “rampant trafficking” of children in three districts. In a statement, the National Human Rights Commission observed that even after seven decades of Independence, despite various laws and schemes to protect the rights of children; their bonded labour and trafficking, and the existence of child labour “raises a big question mark on the effectiveness of the state machinery to control the menace of child labour”. A c c o r d i n g l y, t h e NHRC has asked the chief secretaries of all states and the administrators of union territories to file a report about the steps taken to implement the provisions and articles of the United Nation Convention for Right of Child and the Child and Adolescent Labour (Amendment) Act 2016 in their respective jurisdiction
in particular, the position of child labours. The secretary in the department of labour of all the states and union territories are directed to file the report within eight weeks about the legal action taken against the companies and their management, who are employing or employed children in their factory premises or use them for production activity of any kind, against the letter and spirit of the UN convention for right of a child. The Commission noted that in 1992 India had ratified the UN Convention for Rights of Child; the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution declaring the year 2021 as the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour, which necessitates calling for reports from all states and union territories. The instant case referred to a complaint received in the Commission on December 22, 2019, in which it was alleged that in Udaipur, Dungarpur and Banswara districts of Rajasthan, “rampant trafficking of children aged
between 8-15 years is going on”, the right panel said in the statement. They are sold for Rs 500 to Rs 3,000. Even a commission of Rs 50 was charged on every deal. The complainant also supported his allegations on the basis of a media report carried by a prominent newspaper on the issue, it said. In the wake of these allegations, the Commission had issued a notice to the Director General Police (DGP), Rajasthan calling for a report. In response, the Superintendent of Police (HR), Criminal Investigation Department (CB), Jaipur, Rajasthan informed that the news published was of old incidents, in respect of which no case had been registered, the statement said. The report stated that all the boys and girls went to earn wages with their families. It said that no case of children leaving
or missing or becoming handicapped, from the district, after coming from Gujarat, had come to the fore in relation to the children of Rajasthan. Most of the children keep going to Gujarat for child labour and to stop the same timely action by police stations and antihuman trafficking units in the border areas had been taken, it added. The Superintendent of Police, Dungar pur, informed that there was no organised gang active for human trafficking in Dungarpur. The report also stated that the AntiHuman Trafficking Unit was already working in the district to prevent such incidents. Along with this, a special team of the district had also been formed and for the prevention, checking is being done continuously in police station area bordering Gujarat, the NHRC said.

But this entire scheme is designed to create monopoly,” he alleged. “All the sectors that I have named are there to bring monopoly. We say do privatisation but not at the cost of loss to the country,” he said, claiming that when these assets are privatised or sold to private players, then there will very less employment opportunities.

NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (AGENCIES): In an important development, India and Russia have agreed to form a “permanent bilateral channel” for consultations on Afghanistan. The announcement of bilateral channel has been the most visible practical cooperation between India & any of its allies on Afghanistan in the aftermath of fall of Kabul to Taliban since 15th August. The development was announced hours after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi & Russian President Vladimir Putin held 45-minute telephonic conversation on Tuesday. In a tweet, PM said, “Had a detailed and useful exchange of views with my friend President Putin on recent developments in Afghanistan...” Had a detailed and useful exchange of views with my friend President Putin on recent developments in Afghanistan. establishment of peace and stability in this country, ensuring security in the region as a whole”. The situation in Afghanistan is seen as security challenge to both India & Russia. For India, Afghanistan could become a safe haven for Pakistan-based terror groups, and for Russia, a spillover of the crisis can impact friendly central Asian countries like Uzbekistan, Tajikistan. Important to remember, India’s Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) Pankaj Saran met Russian NSA Nikolai Patrushev last week in Moscow & discussed Afghanistan. Last week was the first week since the fall of Kabul, and Taliban emerging as dominant force in Afghanistan. During the talks both sides also had conversation on trade, Covid crisis, manufacture of Russian Vaccines in India. Next few months will see increased India, Russia engagement, given India will host BRICS summit in September as the chair of the grouping, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s much-awaited India visit for annual India Russia bilateral summit & deliveries of the first units of S400 air defence systems.

NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (IANS): A Day after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the government’s four-year National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) worth Rs 6 lakh crore, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of bringing the process of selling the “crown jewel” assets built by his party in last 70 years. He also contended that the Congress is not opposing the privatisation process but “the entire NMP is designed to create a monopoly”. Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters along with former Finance Minister P. Chidamabaram, Gandhi said: “The Prime Minister and the BJP said that the Congress had done nothing in last 70 years. There is a list here of all the assets that the Congress has helped build using the public money.” “Now the Prime Min-

Working for the future
N
agaland has landed itself in a situation where honest work does not pay and anymore since there is no reward in it. This is a clear indication that the priorities have been messed up and society is in a reverse motion. It’s a topsyturvey situation going around -socially, morally, politically and economically. The prevailing environment for some years has troubled many thinkers and concerned citizens who feel that after a good start from the 60s till the early 80s, the leaders of the state have taken a wrong turn in pursuit of fast and easy development. The leaders themselves were not immune from the sense of entitlement and so, they too passed on this to the people. The combination of such elements with politics has also led to evolution of politicians who are disinclined about adherence to rule of law for self benefit. This has led to gradual erosion of rule of law and adherence to the constitution (of India) and which are not something that should be ignored. In a way, along with the political issue, what needs to be realised today is that, the socio-economic problems have multiplied because of the imbalanced perception which accorded too much focus on politics. Guns and culture cannot bring glory but only through achievements in progress and development. That is the global economic language of identity. That calls for putting the horse before the cart and not vice versa. For too long have people placed the cart before the horse and it is time to do what is needed. All leaders may have their own considered viewpoint on challenges facing contemporary society but unless they mainstream these views, no common vision can be made. The young future generation have to be prepared in the way that enables them to move ahead to lead their people into the 21st century, where there is place and space for those are willing to move and not just sit and talk of their dreams. Traditional values that have imbibed the spirit of self reliance in the past, have almost disappeared and made way to a life of dependency upon government largesse. Such a trend has led to erosion of the base for professionalism which severely weakened the fundamental structures during the decades. It is also a time for Nagas to seriously ponder over the practice of resorting to rhetoric and self proclaimed dispensers of Naga-ness and damning others as anti-Naga or pro-Indian, not uncommon during the 50 and 60s.The situation has changed and today people need leaders who apply logic, clarity and courage to do what is right and good in the sight of God. Every notion and concept has to be developed and sustained over the decades or even centuries. However for the Naga people the concept of development continues to be barraged by the negative aspects of emotive and often, mythical politics. People of every race or nation throughout the world are proud of their unique identity or history and the pride is sustained by a sense of responsibility to build and develop society. Being proud of one’s believed past glory should not lead to being captive with the past but active for advancement towards the future.

S
India needs sports culture in its true sense T
achin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Mary Kom, Deepa Malik, Mithali Raj, Saina Nehwal and the list goes long. These are some of the names we often come across in our day to day life. Well, who are they? They are neither doctors nor engineers; they are sportspersons. Everyone appreciates them, loves them, but how many of us dare to become like them? What are the reasons that dissuade us from choosing sports as a career? What is the value and significance of sports in our modern society? How do we contextualize sports to India and find ways to promote sports culture? These are some of the questions that dive profoundly into the idea of sports culture, and the way we perceive sports in our society. The objective of this article is to promote sports culture among the people and integrate sports in their development process. Sports are an integral part of our evolution and development as a human being. Running has substantially shaped human evolution (Bramble). The endurance running hypothesis illustrates the evolution of certain human peculiarities as adaptations to long-distance running. We can also experience this in our surrounding nature. If we observe pets or animals closely, especially during morning and evening, they play among each other in their unique ways. Nature is the same for all, and living beings are designed in such a way that we love to play. It is somewhere connected in the process of our development. This is the reason why, when a child starts walking, they learn to run and jump gradually on their own. One of the main problems in our society is the age-old notion of showing sports as inferior to education. But, it can be argued that sports are an inevitable part of education. There is a local saying: “padhoge likhoge banoge nawab, kheloge kudoge banoge kharab” This proverb means that to achieve success in life, you have to study and at the same time, reflects that if you play, you will ruin your life. If we analyze this phrase in our current times, it shows that most of our parents believe that sports are just means of passing the time and that students should not devote their crucial time in playing. They suspect that sports are an excuse for children to escape their studies. The outcome of this mentality is quite apparent in our
generation, especially at a time when virtual and mobile gaming devices have occupied a large part of one’s life. It has significantly reduced the time children used to devote to fields and physical sports. I reckon, everyone reading this article must have remembered the time when we used to get a free period during our school days or dedicated game period as such, how we used to run to the ground and play like it is the last day of our life. But as we grew old, we lost that sportsperson inside us. It is truly remarkable to realize what sports nurture inside us, and how it is as important as education for success. Sports teach us many things in the process of playing, which also serve as an essential factor in our physical, mental and personal development. It teaches us valuable qualities like time management, leadership, responsibility-taking, teamwork, challenging authority and winning enthusiasm, excitement and confidence. These are some intangible advantages of sports that cannot be discovered in books or virtual gaming devices. Apart from this, it is not a hidden secret that sports keep us fit and healthy, and it helps us function better and perform well in our day-to-day routine. It has been found in several studies that those who play sports are less prone to stress and other health disorders than those who do not. Sports can also serve as a critical suicide prevention mechanism. Nowadays, we hear a lot of students and young people ending their life due to an over-competitive environment and other societal pressures falling prey to worsened mental health conditions. Sports can be very much helpful to curb these kinds of difficulties. In the context of India, sports is generally associated with cricket, where the majority of people follow the Indian cricket team. We are all aware of the excitement in the India-Pakistan match, and the Indian Premier League, which also gets worldwide attention. But, the subtle question is that: is it the only sport that deserves recognition? Even, when we say, Indian cricket team, how many of us think about the Indian women’s cricket team? What about other sports, like swimming, shooting, badminton, volleyball, football etc.? The answer lies in the question itself. It is that we do not appreciate these sports enough
What man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? —Matthew 7:9
Quotes

because we are relatively less familiar with them. This public opinion must be transformed to give an inclusive space to all kinds of sports, and every gender must get equal recognition. The very nature of sports is to unite. It doesn’t discriminate, and it has no boundaries as such. There are many hidden talents in our country especially in the rural regions, which, if provided with a platform and training, can make India proud in various national and international level events like the Olympics, the Commonwealth etc. For example, tribal children living in the forests of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand have enormous potential in terms of sports. They are very good at swimming, tree climbing, running etc. without any formal training. The need of the hour is to build a sports culture where proper coaching could be provided to the individuals that help them in their development. But, the idea of development here is different from the prevalent belief. Instead of following some rigorous age-old learning, there should be a proper learning methodology, primarily driven by sports. It is a two-way exercise where both students and instructors participate in the learning process. People should come together so that they can impact the lives of each other for a positive change and a better future. Now, the problem is, how can we participate in the process and rebuild society to elevate the status of sports? How can we contribute to the change? We need authentic platforms and NGOs that can serve the desired purpose. Some of the organizations like Play and Shine foundation are working tremendously at a pan-India level for the novel cause of social development by sports and reaching out to the most vulnerable and underprivileged children from time to time. It is a platform where each one of us can come together to promote sports as a means of development. Change is a process, and it is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end. Let’s join our hands to bring out the change and come together to guarantee every individual the right to have an equal opportunity to play sports. And, expand the outreach of touching at least one million lives by the end of 2022. Kaustov Kashyap, Jail Road, Jorhat
A land that has never seen peace
oday let me take you through the history of the land on which several battles have been fought and is still continuing in that direction. A land which is rich in natural resources but the people lack basic rights. They say that this land has never seen peace, which is unfortunate. I’m talking about our neighbour country Afghanistan. Afghanistan is in world news because of withdrawal of US and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) forces from Afghanistan and takeover by Taliban which essentially is a terrorist organisation. Taliban has made several attacks in different countries including India aircraft hijack in 1999, terror attack at World Trade Centre(9/11 attacks) in US. In this blog I’m gonna write about how Taliban was formed, other organisations in Afghanistan, the US’s role and where does India fits in all this. Let’s start from the beginning. Afghanistan has always been a matter of interest for various invaders and kings because of its richness and it is a gateway to Asia and Europe. It was conquered by Darius I of Babylonia and Alexander of Macedonia. Mahmud Ghazni who created an empire from Iran to India, also conquered Afghanistan. After that several Arab rulers invaded the territory and Islam took its root. Then came British forces. British made India its colony. In the southern part, USSR (Russia) was a big empire. Afghanistan was the gateway from Central Asia to India. British were afraid that Russia might attack to take over India. This led to 3 Anglo-Afghan wars to conquer Afghanistan but ultimately Afghanistan became independent. Then several Afghan kings ruled this land and several reforms were introduced. Then several incidences happened- India got independence in 1947, the world got divided into two ideologies which were Communism supported by USSR and Capitalism supported by US (Cold War). These countries were trying hard to persuade other countries to support their ideology. So, in 1979 USSR attacked Afghanistan to support the communist party. US-supported Mujahideen(anti-communist) politically, economically to fight communists. Pakistan was help-
ing US in all this. In 1991, USSR disintegrated and now there was no competition for US. But Mujahideen was still there and it got divided into several groups and one of them was the Taliban. The US along with Pakistan backed the Taliban with arms and finance. Taliban was a radical outfit and was against both Russia and US. It wanted Afghanistan to be run as per Islamic law. Now Taliban started ruling Afghanistan with violence and people lost their rights. Taliban became powerful and wanted to oust US from its land and attacked WTC in 2001. US took revenge by killing Osama Bin Laden and sent its troop in Afghanistan to suppress the Taliban and set up a democratic government. For next 20 years US troops stayed in Afghanistan and more than $2 billion had been spent. Then Donald Trump came to power in US and announced that US would withdraw its troops because it has caused huge loss to America. And in August 2021 US troops have been withdrawn completely and the Taliban has took over Afghanistan. The world is apprehensive about the Taliban- will it be the same Taliban as it was 20 years back, what does it mean for the whole world, etc.? All countries are evacuating their nationals, diplomats including India. Now where does India lie in this. India has been a victim of violence caused by the Taliban and is still in the danger. If the Taliban again turns into a violent outfit, it would be disastrous to India. India has spent $3 billion in Afghanistan’s infrastructure projects. It all might go into ruin and India’s gateway to Central Asia and Europe might be blocked. What should India do? There is actually no clear answer for this. There are few options for India like it can support the democratic government, India can directly talk to Taliban, India can support anti- Taliban forces like US, Britain, or India can just wait and watch. India has always supported a democratic government and supports Afghan-led government. Currently, India has not taken made any stand clearly. Let’s see what step would India opt for. Let’s see if this land will see peace or not in near future. Shivani Tyagi, (As published by The Times of India)
Post-mortem
The Spiritual Search
The illustration of prayer that our Lord used here is one of a good child who is asking for something good. We talk about prayer as if God hears us regardless of what our relationship is to Him (see Matthew 5:45). Never say that it is not God’s will to give you what you ask. Don’t faint and give up, but find out the reason you have not received; increase the intensity of your search and examine the evidence. Is your relationship right with your spouse, your children, and your fellow students? Are you a “good child” in those relationships? Do you have to say to the Lord, “I have been irritable and cross, but I still want spiritual blessings”? You cannot receive and will have to do without them until you have the attitude of a “good child.” We mistake defiance for devotion, arguing with God instead of surrendering. We refuse to look at the evidence that clearly indicates where we are wrong. Have I been asking God to give me money for something I want, while refusing to pay someone what I owe him? Have I been asking God for liberty while I am withholding it from someone who belongs to me? Have I refused to forgive someone, and have I been unkind to that person? Have I been living as God’s child among my relatives and friends? (see Matthew 7:12). I am a child of God only by being born again, and as His child I am good only as I “walk in the light” (1 John 1:7). For most of us, prayer simply becomes some trivial religious expression, a matter of mystical and emotional fellowship with God. We are all good at producing spiritual fog that blinds our sight. But if we will search out and examine the evidence, we will see very clearly what is wrong— a friendship, an unpaid debt, or an improper attitude. There is no use praying unless we are living as children of God. Then Jesus says, regarding His children, “Everyone who asks receives…” (Matthew 7:8).
NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25, 2021
Is it ok to be gay? (From previous issuee) enesis 13:13 says, Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the LORD. All have sinned. But the men of Sodom were especially wicked and evil. The English word, “Sodomy” means same-sex intercourse. The Lord told Abraham in Genesis 18:20, their sin is very grave. Some say, “But Abraham prayed for the gays and asked God to have mercy on them.” No, Abraham said in v.23, Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? He interceded for the righteous living in Sodom, that God would spare the whole city if there were ten righteous people there. But there weren’t. Notice, Abraham did not defend homosexuality. He called them wicked. He didn’t say, “Lord, they can’t help it, they were born that way. Love is love.” Jude 1:7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. Nothing is said about a lack of hospitality in this verse. In one recent posting, a transvestite said that he was generally accepted by the people in his state, but that the elders needed to be
G
educated. As if homosexuality was a new idea. No, we see as far back as in the days of Abraham there were Sodomites. It is not that the elders need to be updated. It is a younger generation that is biblically illiterate that needs to be warned. Romans 1:26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; That means women having sex with other women, lesbianism, is just as wrong. And Paul calls this dishonorable passions. It is not love, it is sexual perversion. “Love is love.” What if a man loves an animal? What if he loves his sister or his daughter? What if he loves his stepmother? In the church at Corinth a man having sex with his father’s wife. In 1 Corinthians 5:5, Paul instructed the church, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. Paul didn’t say, “You can love whoever you want to love.” And notice they were to initiate judgment on this erring man so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. The implication is that if they didn’t do something to arrest his attention and bring him back to his senses, if he continued, he would not go
to heaven. 1 Corinthians 6:9 says homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom. They won’t go to heaven. But then he added this in v.11, And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. Notice the verb were is past tense. Previously, before they were washed and sanctified and justified, some of them were homosexuals. Gays definitely can be saved. But they cannot continue to practice homosexuality. S o m e w o u l d s ay, “They can’t help it, they were born this way. God made them like this. In fact, Jesus even said so.” They’re referring to Matthew 19:12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. After teaching on marriage and divorce, the disciples said to Jesus, “It’s better for a man not to be married.” But Jesus said, “That’s not true for everyone.” They’re not talking about homosexuality, they are talking about celibacy. T h e wo r d e u nu c h (Greek, eunouchos) means a castrated man, or im-
potent man, or one who otherwise does not engage in sex. No one ever made himself a homosexual “for the sake of the kingdom.” But some men, like Paul, have been celibate. But as Paul said in 1 Corinthians 7:7, I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another. God wants all men to be saved and Jesus died for the ungodly, including homosexuals. There is a difference between someone who is struggling in this area and someone who is openly, unashamedly promoting it. Many years ago I received a telephone call from a young man I hadn’t seen in a long while. I don’t know how he got my telephone number. We had previously attended the same church. I asked him where he was going to church and he said he wasn’t. He said frankly, “I’m backslid.” I thought maybe he had neglected his prayer life or had grown cold spiritually. But he told me that before he was saved he was involved with homosexuality and that he had fallen into that again. He was living with some other ungodly men. I spoke with him in tones of kindness and reminded him that God loved him and that the blood of Jesus would wash him but that God wanted him to live free from sin.
I wasn’t sure how he would respond. He might just hang up the phone angrily. But he said, “I’m doing something I haven’t done in a long time. I’ve got my Bible open and I’m reading it.” If people fall into sin, we want to restore them. And we don’t really help people by giving the impression that we agree with their sinful lifestyle choices. Young people today need clear teaching on this subject. Many gays are the victim of sexually assault. Often it occurred while they were young. I think it is safe to say that, generally
speaking, every homosexual is looking to make a new convert. Just as most drug addicts don’t get hooked by a stranger but a friend, the same is true with the gay lifestyle. It is actually a misuse of the English language. The word “gay” means happy, and there are many homosexuals who are anything but happy. Keeping environment clean should be a duty of every citizen
Sir,
With the relaxation of lockdown, of late, I have been seeing a lot of littering in the city. When it comes to understanding the importance of cleanliness, you simply can’t overstate how much it impacts everyone’s life. It should be the duty of every citizen to keep his/her city clean just as much we clean our homes religiously. In Indore, door to door garbage collection there had mightily reduced its presence on roads. Its also very encouraging when we see organisations conduct cleanliness drives in their towns, setting an example for everyone. In Dimapur, sadly, the dustbins kept along the footpaths are mostly wrecked by miscreants. Most of us are in love with foreign countries but cleanliness is a major attribute of their beauty. We can certainly achieve this if we as citizens do out bit because keeping our city clean should be a shared responsibility of all. Areni, Kohima

5.1 magnitude quake in Bay of Bengal CHENNAI/KAKINADA, AUG 24 (PTI): Tremors were felt in Chennai and Kakinada on Tuesday following an undersea earthquake in the Bay of Bengal, but there were no reports of damage to life or property. The 5.1 magnitude quake in the Bay of Bengal was reported at 12.35 pm, the National Center for Seismology said. The quake was at a depth of 10 km in the Bay of Bengal and was about 296 km south-south east of Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh and 320 km east north east of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, it said. Tremors were felt by residents of Chennai and Kakinada and nearby areas briefly. Slight tremors were felt in Kakinada, Razole, Palakollu and Narsapuram towns in Andhra Pradesh following the 5.1 intensity earthquake on Tuesday afternoon. In Kakinada, residents suddenly felt their ceiling fans shaking and things falling off their shelves. Some of them said it lasted just a couple of seconds and no damage happened. In Chennai, the tremors were felt in some parts.

constitutional position that Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh had till August 4, 2019. It is our constitutional right,” he said. Tarigami, who was flanked by other leaders of the alliance, including Abdullah and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, said a few people were interpreting their demands some other way and calling them “anti-national activities”. “They try to harass the leaders associated with the alliance and continue with slanderous campaigns. Perhaps, it has not happened before that the voice of the
people was being stopped this way. It is impossible to keep stopping the voice of the people,” he said. The alliance spokesperson said the silence in Jammu and Kashmir has been considered as normalcy. “Even today, they think Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh should be silent like a graveyard, and it is not acceptable to the present government and leadership that anyone should raise his voice or keep his head high,” he claimed. “The present government has vowed to humili-
ate us, they think of our humiliation as their pride, which is not acceptable to us,” the CPI(M) leader alleged. Tarigami said the alliance wants to send a message to the country and its people that the PAGD is committed to seek the rights which were guaranteed by the Constitution. The PAGD spokesperson said the alliance adopted a unanimous resolution at its Tuesday meeting, reiterating that the constitutional position of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh which the erstwhile state enjoyed on August 4, 2019, be restored. “Articles 370, 35-A and full statehood has been our constitutional position and the constitution of Jammu and Kashmir, which was abolished unconstitutionally, be restored. This is our basic agenda and our basic demand,” he said. The PAGD, he said, has vowed that insult and humiliation of the people and political leadership will not be acceptable. Tarigami said they had raised the issue of the release of political prisoners at an all-party meeting with
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but no such prisoner has been released as a confidence building measure. “We want to ask the gover nment how many people have been released since the all-party meeting chaired by Modi was held,” he said. Tarigami claimed that there is a campaign to humiliate the political leadership and workers “as if only thieves exist here”. “This humiliation must be stopped and we will keep our case before the people of India, its civil society, media houses and Parliament. We appeal to them that this humiliation must stop or its consequences can be dangerous not only for Jammu and Kashmir but for the entire country,” he said. He also said that all main administrative officers whether in the civil administration or police were from outside and locals were being sidelined. Referring to the denial of the permission for the meeting in view of the Covid pandemic, Tarigami said “it seems even this small meeting is not acceptable to the administration”.
CHANDIGARH, AUG 24 (IANS): The demand to ‘replace’ Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh just months ahead of the Assembly polls once again gained momentum with Congress’ 34 ‘sulking’ legislators, comprising four Cabinet ministers, on Tuesday decided to apprise the high command over the widespread dissidence among the party ranks. They were categorically clear in saying after the closed door meeting that it was high time for the party to opt for a change of the guard ahead of the polls. “Changing the CM is the prerogative of the party high command. But we have lost faith in him,” Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi told the media here. He said the legislators unanimously authorised a five-member committee to apprise the party President Sonia Gandhi at the earliest about the dissent of the party workers over nonfulfillment of poll promises by the government. The five-member com-
Amarinder Singh
mittee are Cabinet ministers Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, who backed state unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu in the recent power struggle, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, Channi and Pargat Singh, considered close to Sidhu. Channi slammed the Chief Minister and his aides over unfulfilled poll promises, particularly the delay in action in the 2015 sacrilege and police firing cases. He said the panel would seek time from the Congress high command to listen to grievances of legislators and ministers, otherwise it will be difficult for the party to get a repeat
in Punjab. He said the MLAs have raised a number of issues, including the existence of sand, drug, cable and transport mafias. Moreover, the issue of sacrileges and subsequent police firing cases has not only annoyed the party cadres, but also hurt the religious sentiments of the common man. Also the government has failed to deliver the promised action against drug dealers, they said. Joining the chorus, Randhawa said they have the best portfolios with them. “But we are not bothered over losing the portfolios. Our concern is that the poll promises like justice in Bargari and scrapping the faulty power purchase agreements have not been fulfilled so far.” Interestingly, the bickering within the party came to fore just a day ahead of state affairs in-charge Harish Rawat’s visit to Chandigarh over the growing ‘war of words’ between Amarinder Singh and state president Sidhu.
Rahul meets Baghel, Singh Deo in bid Evacuation from Afghanistan: India brings back 78 people to resolve differences in Chhattisgarh
Rahul Gandhi with Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel and others.
NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and state Health Minister T S Singh Deo in an effort to resolve the power tussle between the two senior leaders in the state. AICC in-charge for Chhattisgarh P L Punia and AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal were also present during the meeting convened by Rahul Gandhi at his residence. Sources said the two Chhattisgarh leaders had separate meetings with the former Congress president. The meetings lasted almost
three hours. Rahul Gandhi heard the two leaders patiently in his attempt to iron out differences in the state leadership, the sources said, adding that some more meetings with the senior party leadership are likely in the coming days. Punia told reporters later that issues of development in the state were discussed during their meeting. He also denied that the leadership issue was discussed. Singh Deo and Baghel have been at loggerheads, with the former claiming that the leadership at the time of the election victory in 2018 had proposed a rotation of the chief minister’s
post after 2.5 years. Both have said they would abide by the decision of the party high command. “Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are our leaders and we would abide with whatever they say,”Singh Deo told reporters before the meeting.
NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (PTI): India on Tuesday brought back 78 people, including 25 of its nationals and a number of Afghan Sikhs and Hindus from Dushanbe, a day after they were evacuated from Talibanbesieged Kabul to the Tajik city. The group along with three copies of the Sikh scripture, Guru Granth Sahib, was airlifted from Kabul to Dushanbe by a military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force on Monday. With Tuesday’s evacuation, the number of people brought back to Delhi reached over 800 since August 16 when the first group was airlifted from Kabul, a day after the Taliban seized control of the Afghan capital city. The evacuees were received at the Indira Gandhi International Airport by Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and V Muraleedharan. “Blessed to receive
& pay obeisance to three holy Swaroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji from Kabul to Delhi a short while ago,” Puri tweeted. An Air India flight brought back the people from Dushanbe. “Joined Minister Shri @HardeepSPuri ji at Delhi Airport in receiving Swaroop of Shri Guru Granth Sahib ji arrived from Afghanistan along with evacuees,” Muraleedharan tweeted. Earlier, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said 78 people are being brought to Delhi on an Air India flight.
“Helping in the safe return from Afghanistan. AI 1956 en route to Delhi from Dushanbe carrying 78 passengers, including 25 Indian nationals. Evacuees were flown in from Kabul on an @IAF_MCC aircraft,” he said on Twitter. On Monday, India brought back 146 of its nationals to Delhi in four different flights from the Qatari capital Doha, days after they were evacuated from Kabul by NATO and American aircraft. India has stepped up efforts to evacuate its citizens as well as its Afghan
partners from Kabul in view of the deteriorating security situation in the Afghan capital and other parts of the country after the Taliban swept to power last week. On Sunday, India evacuated 392 people including two Afghan lawmakers in three different flights under the evacuation mission. The Taliban seized control of Kabul on August 15. Within two days of the Taliban’s capture of Kabul, India evacuated 200 people, including the Indian envoy and other staffers of its embassy in the Afghan capital.

SRINAGAR, AUG 24 (PTI): The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) on Tuesday demanded the restoration of the pre-August 5, 2019 constitutional position of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, saying it would continue the fight to seek the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. The alliance of the six mainstream political parties, which seek the restoration of the special status of the erstwhile state, held a meeting at its chairman and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah’s residence at Gupkar here. The meeting was also attended by the middle and lower rung leaders of the constituent parties of the alliance. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, PAGD spokesperson and CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami said seeking the restoration of the special status, which was revoked by the Centre on August 5, 2019, is the constitutional right of the people of the erstwhile state. “We are not seeking anything other than the restoration of the special

It said the bridge was targeted to have been commissioned on October 15, 2016 as per Work Order. Further, LH has urged the state government and the responsible authorities including NFHRCC to complete the road at the earliest, failing which the hoho would be compelled to resort to other means of seeking solution to the matter including revival of FIR.

Rupee edges 3 paise higher to close at 74.19 against US dollar MUMBAI, AUG 24 (PTI): The rupee appreciated by 3 paise to close at 74.19 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, supported by a strong rally in the domestic equity market. However, a strong dollar in the overseas markets and rising crude prices weighed on the investor sentiment, forex traders said. At the interbank forex market, the local unit opened strong at 74.12 against the greenback and moved in a range of 74.11 to 74.20 in the day trade. It finally ended at 74.19 against the American currency, registering a rise of 3 paise over its previous close of 74.22. On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex ended 403.19 points or 0.73 per cent higher at 55,958.98, while the broader NSE Nifty advanced 128.15 points or 0.78 per cent to 16,624.60.

Based on this assessment, Barclays has forecast India’s economy expanded 21.2 per cent y/y in Q2 21 (April-June, or Q1 of fiscal year 2021-22), as a low base and a much smaller loss of activity due to the second COVID wave pushed growth to an all-time high for a single quarter. Bajoria said that Government expenditures fell short of total revenue collections, but this will not weigh too much on activity. Moreover, within services, the low year-earlier base is likely to offset a sequential loss of momentum, as public transport services, fuel demand and financial services likely experienced some loss of activity erosion during the short but intense second COVID outbreak. Still, these sectors are rebounding quickly and should add more meaningfully to growth in Q3 GDP, Barclays said. Despite continued expansive government expenditures, we expect output in the public administration sector to contract y/y, as a large of share of the spending is transfer payments, which will not contribute to GDP, the report said.

Taliban will be judged by deeds, not Refugee body urges not to recognize Taliban words, says Johnson ahead of G7 meet
NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (IANS): Soon after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan after toppling the democratically-elected government of Ashraf Ghani, the war torn country has been passing through a humanitarian crisis across the provinces. With an aim to counter the challenges posed by Afghan militia, an international body, the World Refugee & Migration Council (WRMC) has urged the global leaders to withhold the recognition of the Taliban’s new government and access to financing. The ongoing situation in Afghanistan has brought focus to the war-torn people seeking refuge in several countries amidst their uncertain futures. The WRMC has also suggested some urgent priorities with an objective to avert further human suffering and bloodshed in war ravaged country. Under these priorities, the international body has suggested that the Hamid Karzai International Air-

port should be kept secure for evacuation flights for as long as necessary. There should be no artificial deadlines for the removal of NATO forces that have been deployed to secure the airport. UN Member States must ensure that UN Funds and Agencies on the ground in the region have the requisite resources to provide humanitarian relief to the hundreds of thousands of Afghans who have been forcibly displaced in recent months. More than 10 per cent of the Afghan population has been forcibly displaced and there has been a 60 per cent shortfall in the
United Nations’ Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA). A humanitarian land corridor should be negotiated with the Taliban to permit access to humanitarian assistance to those in Afghanistan facing famine and those who have been displaced by the decade long war, the WRMC suggested. The council also underlined the need that future of Afghan refugees should not be determined simply by geography but according to the principles of responsibility sharing in the ‘global compact’ of the United Nations (UN).
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has said that the US is engaging with the Taliban on a daily basis as the ongoing Afghan evacuation faces the August 31 deadline. President Joe Biden has left open the possibility of extending the ongoing evacuation beyond August 31, the date he previously set to end the US military mission in Afghanistan, Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday. Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen, however, made clear in an interview with Sky News that such extension would be unacceptable. At a White House briefing on Monday, Sullivan told reporters that the US has been consulting with allies and the Taliban on the evacuation issues. “We are in talks with the Taliban on a daily basis through both political and security channels,” he said when asked about talks with the Taliban over the extension issue. “I’m not going to get into the details of those discussions here to protect those discussions, which are covering a wide range of issues.” Sullivan added that the US is consulting the Taliban “on every aspect of what’s happening in Kabul right now” and would continue those conversations. “As the president has said before, we believe that we have time between now and the 31st to get out any American that wants to get out,” he said, while noting “the president will ultimately make his decision about the precise shape and scope of this operation.” State Department spokesperson Ned Price said later in the day that the US had discussed the issue of Kabul airport with the Taliban. “There is actually an agreement between and among all these actors, of course between the US and our partners and allies, but also with the Taliban, that all of our interests would be served with a functioning airport,” he told reporters during a daily briefing.
LONDON, AUG 24 (PTI): The Taliban will be judged by its deeds rather than words, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said ahead of chairing an emergency G7 virtual meet to coordinate international response to the Afghan crisis. Downing Street said that during the meeting Tuesday, the UK PM will call on the Group of Seven leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States to continue to stand by the Afghan people and step up support for refugees and humanitarian aid. He is expected to urge international partners to match the UK’s commitments on aid and the resettlement of those most in need in order to protect human rights and contribute to the stability of the region. “Our first priority is to complete the evacuation of our citizens and those Afghans who have assisted our efforts over the last 20 years – but as we look ahead to the next phase, it’s vital

we come together as an international community and agree a joint approach for the longer term,” said Johnson. “That’s why I’ve called an emergency meeting of the G7 – to coordinate our response to the immediate crisis, to reaffirm our commitment to the Afghan people, and to ask our international partners to match the UK’s commitments to support those in need. “Together with our partners and allies, we will continue to use every humanitarian and diplomatic lever to safeguard human rights and protect the gains made over the last two decades. The Taliban will be judged by their deeds and
not their words,” he said. According to a Downing Street communique, the leaders of the world’s seven major industrialized democracies are expected to reiterate their commitment to safeguarding the gains made in Afghanistan over the last 20 years – in particular on girls’ education and the rights of women and minorities. Discussions are set to cover the ongoing collaboration on evacuation efforts at the Kabul airport and the longer-term work to secure a more stable future for Afghanistan and ensure any new government is inclusive and abides by its international obligations. The meeting will take place by video conference and the NATO and UN Secretaries-General have also been invited to join the discussion. It comes as the Taliban issued a stark warning that it would not entertain any suggestion of an extension to the August 31 deadline for the US-led NATO troops to exit Kabul.

Noh Kyu-duk, South Korea’s special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, held a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov who arrived here on Saturday for a six-day trip, reports Xinhua news agency. The South Korean Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that Noh and Morgulov exchanged opinions on the entire peninsula situation, discussing bilateral cooperation for progress in the complete
denuclearization of and permanent peace settlement on the peninsula. Noh assessed Russia’s support and cooperation for progress in inter-Korean cooperation and the resumption of dialogue between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States. The South Korean diplomat called on Russia to play a constructive role in the DPRK’s return to dialogue. Morgulov shared the need for a rapid resumption of dialogues involving relevant countries, including those between the DPRK and the United States and between South Korea and the DPRK, and the importance of sustaining stability on the peninsula and in the region.

In the occupied West Bank, officials said a Palestinian teen was killed in a clash Tuesday with the Israeli military. Palestinian authorities said the 15-year-old boy died after being shot in the head during clashes with soldiers in the city of Nablus. The Israeli military said soldiers were carrying out an arrest raid in the Balata refugee camp when they came under attack from nearby rooftops. WASHINGTON, AUG 24 (PTI): It is more probable that COVID-19 spread when an infected animal passed the SARS-CoV-2 virus to a human at a live animal market in Wuhan, China rather than the disease originating from a laboratory accident, according to a team of global scientists. vaccines should be mandated and an electorate is divided over which political party should control Congress after the 2022 midterms, NBC reported. It all produced a ‘summer of discontent’ for Biden, said Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates, who conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies.
“The promise of April has led to the peril of August,” Horwitt said, arguing that Covid -- more than Afghanistan -- has dented Biden’s numbers. “It is the domestic storm, Covid’s delta wave, that is causing more difficulties at this stage here at home and for President Biden.” According to the survey, 49 per cent of adults approve of Biden’s overall job performance, while 48 per cent disapprove. That’s down from April’s NBC News poll, when 53 per cent of adults approved of Biden’s job and 39 per cent disapproved -- with some of the biggest declines for Biden coming from independents, rural residents and white respondents.

The poll also finds fewer Americans support Biden’s handling of the coronavirus and the economy now than they did last spring, and just a quarter of respondents approve of his handling of Afghanistan. The survey findings demonstrate the public has grown more pessimistic about the coronavirus since April, the country remains split over whether Covid-19

Covid-19-like pandemic may hit within next 60 years: Study U
T
he world will likely see a pandemic similar to Covid-19 within the next 60 years, say researchers stressing the need to prioritise efforts to prevent and control them. Researchers from the Universities of Padua in Italy and Duke in the US used new statistical methods to measure the scale and frequency of disease outbreaks including a row of pathogens like plague, smallpox, cholera, typhus, and novel influenza viruses over the past 400 years to estimate the intensity of those events and the yearly probability of them recurring. The findings showed that the probability of a pandemic similar to the deadliest pandemic in modern history -- the Spanish flu, which killed more than 30 million people between 1918 and 1920 -- ranged from 0.3 per cent to 1.9 per cent per year over the time period studied. These figures also mean it is statistically likely that a pandemic of such extreme scale would occur within the next 400 years. But the data, appearing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences, showed the risk of intense outbreaks is growing rapidly. Based on the increasing rate at which novel pathogens such as SARSCoV-2 have broken loose in human populations in the past 50 years, the study estimates that the probability of novel disease outbreaks will likely grow three-fold in the next few decades. Using this increased risk factor, the researchers estimate that a pandemic similar in scale to Covid-19 is likely within a span of 59 years, a result, they write, is “much lower than intuitively expected”. “That is not to say we can count on a 59-year reprieve from a Covid-like pandemic, nor that we’re off the hook for a calamity on the scale of the
Spanish flu for another 300 years. Such events are equally probable in any year during the span,” said Gabriel Katul, Professor of Hydrology and Micrometeorology at Duke. “When a 100-year flood occurs today, one may erroneously presume that one can afford to wait another 100 years before experiencing another such event,” Katul said. “This impression is false. One can get another 100-year flood next year.” The reasons outbreaks are becoming more frequent are population growth, changes in food systems, environmental degradation and more frequent contact between humans and disease-harbouring animals may all be significant factors. nable to manage your blood pressure levels? Eating flavonoid-rich foods like berries, apples, pears and drinking red wine can lower systolic blood pressure levels, as well as improve greater dive r s i t y i n gut microbiome, according to new research. The study, published in the journal Hypertension, showed that up to 15.2 per cent of the association between flavonoid-rich foods and systolic blood pressure could be explained by the diversity found in participants’ gut microbiome. Flavonoids are broken down by the body’s gut microbiome - the bacteria found in the digestive tract. Eating 1.6 servings of berries per day (one serving equals 80 grams, or 1 cup) was associated with an average reduction in systolic blood pressure levels of 4.1 mm Hg, and about 12 per cent of the association was explained by gut microbiome factors. Drinking 2.8 glasses (125 ml of wine per glass) of red wine a week was associated with an average of 3.7 mm Hg lower systolic blood pressure level, of which 15
per cent could be explained by the gut microbiome. “Our gut microbiome plays a key role in metabolising flavonoids to enhance their cardioprotective effects, and this study provides evidence to suggest these blood pressurelowering effects are achievable with simple changes to the daily diet,” said lead investigator Aedin Cassidy, chair and professor in nutrition and preventive medicine at the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Recent studies also found a link between gut microbiota -- the microorganisms in the human digestive tract -- and cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is the leading cause of death worldwide. Gut microbiota is highly variable between individuals, and there are reported differences in gut microbial compositions among people with and without CVD. With increased research suggesting flavonoids may reduce heart disease risk, this study assessed the role of the gut microbiome on the process. (IANS)

2 in 3 Indian adults addicted to being online due to Covid: Report
N
early two in three Indians (66 per cent) have become addicted to being online as a result of the Covid pandemic, a report released on Tuesday said. The 2021 Norton Cyber Safety Insights report by consumer security company NortonLifeLock is based on an online survey of more than 1,000 Indian adults conducted by the Harris Poll. The survey found that on average, adults in India spend 4.4 hours a day in front of screens, outside of work or educational time. About eight in 10 (82 per cent) said that the amount of time they spent on screens, aside from educational or work purposes, has increased significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic. Smartphones by far are the most common device Indian adults surveyed feel they are spending too much time on (84 per cent). The majority of Indian adults (74 per cent) agree that the amount of time they spend in front of a screen negatively impacts their physical health, while more than half (55 per cent) say it negatively impacts their mental health. “It is understandable that the pandemic has increased our dependence on
screens for activities that could otherwise have been done offline. It is important for every individual, however, to find a healthy balance between their onscreen and off-screen time so that their health and, more importantly, their children’s health is not adversely impacted,” NortonLifeLock’s Director, Sales and Field Marketing, India & SAARC Countries Ritesh Chopra said in a statement. The sur vey also showed a lack of trust among Indian adults in smart home devices and/ or the companies that manufacture them. Nearly half of adults decided against purchasing a smart home device due to security concerns or because of privacy concerns (40 per cent). People also cited a
lack of information about smart home devices (40 per cent) and a lack of transparency from smart home device manufacturers about how they use consumer data (35 per cent) as reasons for not purchasing a smart home device. “The online landscape has seen an increase in the numbers and types of cyber threats. Users must take great care of how and where they use their connected devices. Convenience should not come at the cost of security,” Chopra said. “Today, the loss of personal or confidential information can have very serious repercussions indeed. It is important for parents to be aware of this fact and to educate their children on the need for cyber safety,” he added. (IANS)
Martian snow is dusty, can potentially melt: Study Too much groundwater pumping is draining many of the world’s rivers A
team of US scientists has developed a new approach to determine how dusty Mars ice really is, and whether it could melt. Mars is a dusty planet, so much of its ice is also dusty and much darker than fresh snow we might see on Earth. The dustier the ice is, the darker and thus warmer the ice gets, which can affect both its stability and evolution through time. Under certain conditions, this might also mean that the ice could melt on Mars. The team from Universities of Arizona State and Washington combined data from NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter with computer simulations to successfully match the brightness of Martian ice and determine its dust content. Their results have been published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets. “There is a chance that this dusty and dark ice might melt a few centimetres down. And any subsurface liquid water produced from melting will be protected from evaporating in Mars’ wispy atmosphere by the overlying blanket of ice,” said Aditya Khuller, a planetary
H
scientist at Arizona State University. Based on their simulations, the team predicted that the ice dug up by the Phoenix Mars Lander formed by dusty snowfall, sometime over the last million years, similar to other ice deposits found previously across the mid-latitudes of Mars. “It is widely believed that Mars has experienced multiple ice ages throughout its history, and it looks like the ice being exposed throughout the mid-latitudes of Mars is a remnant of this ancient dusty snowfall,” Khuller said.
For next steps, the team hopes to further analyse ice exposures on Mars, assess if the ice could actually melt, and learn more about Mars’ climate history. “We are working on developing improved computer simulations of Martian ice to study how it evolves over time, and whether it might melt to form liquid water,” Khuller said. “The results from this study will be integral to our work because knowing how dark the ice is directly influences how warm it gets.” (IANS)
umankind’s collective thirst is slowly desiccating landscapes worldwide, a study of groundwater finds. Water stored in aquifers underground makes up the vast majority of accessible freshwater on Earth. Its abundance has fueled forays into drier locales, such as California’s Central Valley, enabling a boom in crop production (SN: 7/23/19). And overall, about 70 percent of the groundwater being used worldwide goes to agriculture. But surface waters — rivers and streams — rely on groundwater, too. When people pump too much too quickly, natural waterways begin to empty, compromising freshwater ecosystems. A study in the Oct. 3 Nature finds that this ecological tipping point, what scientists call the environmental flow limit, has already been reached in 15 to 21 percent of watersheds tapped by humans. Most of those rivers and streams are in drier regions like parts of Mexico and northern India
where groundwater is used for irrigation. If pumping continues at current rates, the authors estimate that by 2050, anywhere from 42 to 79 percent of pumped watersheds will have crossed this threshold. “It’s really quite alarming,” says Inge de Graaf, a hydrologist at the University of Freiburg in Germany. “Groundwater and surface waters are intimately connected, and too much pumping creates a ticking time bomb.” A healthy aquifer but-
tresses ecosystems against seasonal fluctuations in water availability, providing stability for resident plants and animals. But if too much groundwater is pumped, surface waters begin to seep into the aquifer, draining the life from many river and stream habitats. De Graaf and colleagues created a statistical model that linked groundwater pumping with groundwater flow to rivers from 1960 to 2100. Projecting into the future, the researchers tweaked the
model based on different climate projections, but kept groundwater pumping rates constant. The team found that more than half of watersheds where pumping occurs will likely cross this ecological threshold before 2050. “We need to be thinking about this now, not in 10 years,” de Graaf says. “We can decrease pumping in these areas, develop better irrigation…. Our study shows us where to target more sustainable efforts.” (ScienceNews)
Google to revamp Play Store app ratings

oogle is planning to improve Play Store ratings by filtering reviews and ratings based on where users are. Soon, Play Store users on phones will see app ratings based on the average of submissions from only the country they are registered. “We have heard from both Play Store users and developers that ratings and reviews could be more helpful,” the company said in a statement late on Monday. “This is especially true when ratings from one area unfairly impact another — like when a bug that only impacted a single country negatively affects the app’s rating everywhere; or when positive improvements in a tablet experience are overlooked because of the number of users on phones,” Google added. From November 2021, users on phones will start to see ratings specific to their registered country. Early in 2022, users on other formfactors such as tablets, Chromebooks, and wearables will start to see ratings specific to the device that they are on. Ratings would help people decide which apps to download and they are taken into consideration for featuring and placement on Play Store, the company said. “But because the app experience can vary depending on the user’s region and device type, aggregate ratings don’t always tell the whole story,” it added. Starting in November, Google is going to change the ratings that individual users see based on where they are registered, and later in the year what device they are using. (IANS)

The situation improved for West Indies as Nkrumah Bonner (37) and Jermaine Blackwood (33) put on a steady 60-run stand to take them past 100. Unfortunately for Kraigg Brathwaite’s side, the duo’s hard work came undone across two overs. Bonner was the first of the pair out, edging a

It was a collapse when Afridi bounced out Blackwood with a ball that ballooned off the outside shoulder of the bat to be taken by Fawad Alam -the star of Day 3, diving back and to his right to take a good catch at gully.

Since my debut, senior players have been the biggest source of my motivation. They have helped me play my natural game without any fear and pressure, and that is the biggest reason behind why I could win the 2019 FIH Rising Star of the Year Award and also stand a chance to win the accolade for the second time,” added Prasad. On the bronze-medal performance in Tokyo, Prasad said that it was just the beginning of the resurgence of Indian hockey. “However, we also need to realise that this is just the beginning, and there’s still a lot of room for improvement. Imran Butt (37), Azhar Ali (22) and Azam (33) all managed contributions at strike rates of better than 70, with the promoted Hasan Ali hitting two sixes on his way to 17 off 11. Hasan and Abid were among four Pakistani batters to score at better than a run a ball as Azam declared 10 overs into the evening session. West Indies finished the day with nine wickets in hand, needing another 280 runs to win. They enjoyed a solid start to their innings as Brathwaite and Kieran Powell added 34 runs for the first wicket before the latter was run out by a direct hit from Afridi from the boundary’s edge. Brathwaite (17*) and Joseph (8*) will resume play on day five with all four results possible. 3rd Test: Buoyant India eye unassailable series over Eng

LEEDS, AUG 24 (IANS): The Indian Test team returns to Headingley after 19 years, buoyant and hopeful of taking a 2-0 unbeatable lead with a win in the third Test that begins on Wednesday against an England that is struggling on multiple fronts. India lead the series 1-0 after two Tests. The first one at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, was drawn while the tourists won the second at Lord’s, London, by 151 runs. India, despite three of their most experienced batsmen - Cheteshwar Pujara, skipper Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane -- failing to notch up with big scores and being easy meat, have the advantage thanks to opener
K.L. Rahul’s form and the pace bowling attack. Rahul and the pace bowlers have shone in the first two Tests. Bowlers Jaspit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami haven’t just taken wickets but also scored important runs in the second innings of the second Test that eventually won India the match. Unlike India, England’s batting has struggled with only skipper Joe Root putting up scores of note. They’ve had to bring in Dawid Malan, who was otherwise considered a white ball specialist and have already removed two of the top three batsmen that started the series. Zak Crawley and Dominic Sibley, who both were open-
ers at the start of the series, are already out. But what has made matters worse is injuries to the leading bowlers. As if injuries to Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes (a pace bowling all-rounder and an X-factor player), Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad and Olly Stone weren’t enough, England have lost the services of Mark Wood, who is out of the third Test due to a shoulder injury. England have called up Saqib Mahmood, who is likely to get a look-in for the third Test. The host wouldn’t have been in such a poor situation had they held their nerve in the second Test. As Virat Kohli’s men tempted them into losing temper, they walked into the trap and handed the advantage back to India in the first session of the fifth and final day. Though Joe Root, who will be playing at his home ground, has promised that they will let India play the way they want to and will focus on their own style of play, it remains to be seen if England have within them the ability to overcome the setback at Lord’s in the second Test and win the series.
Liverpool refuse to release Salah for WC qualifiers
LONDON, AUG 24 (AP): Liverpool has refused to release Mohamed Salah for Egypt’s upcoming World Cup qualifying matches because of coronavirus restrictions, the country’s soccer association said Monday. Egypt is on Britain’s red list, so Salah would be required to quarantine upon his return from Cairo and miss two Premier League games. Egypt is scheduled to play Angola in Cairo on Sept. 2 before traveling to face Gabon three days later in Franceville. The association said it “continues its contacts

with the FIFA …. to have international players be exempted from travel restrictions imposed on them in countries where they play due to coronavirus.” The Egyptian federation also wanted Salah to
play for the national team at the Tokyo Olympics, but it said Liverpool denied the request. Clubs are not obligated to release players for the men’s Olympic tournament.
Salah, who has twice won the Premier League’s Golden Boot award, tested positive for the virus during a visit to Cairo in November, where he attended his brother’s wedding. At the time, he was to join the national team for its game against Togo. The 29-year-old Salah was the first Egyptian player to become a Premier League champion after joining Liverpool in 2018 from Roma. Liverpool is seeking to strike a new deal to keep Salah with the club. Egyptians see Salah as a sign of hope for a country battered by poverty and years of political turmoil.

Peace treaties to make AICF richer by Rs.1.30 crore

C H E N NA I , AU G 2 4 (IANS): Peace brings prosperity, while litigation results in cash and energy outgo. The officials of the All India Chess Federation (AICF) and Chess Association of India (CAI) will vouch for that now. The AICF is expected to be richer by about Rs.1.30 crore after signing peace treaties with its rivals -- CAI and the Calicut registered AICF (AICF-Calicut). A couple of days back, AICF and CAI announced that the latter will merge with the former so that the sport can progress with a lower number of court cases. “We had approached the new management of AICF --Sanjay Kapoor, President, and Bharat Singh Chauhan, Secretary -- with the merger proposal and ending litigation. They agreed to the idea. With this move, the years of litigation will come to an end and people can focus on the game,” S.L.Harsh, Senior Vice President, CAI told IANS. “It is to reduce court cases and create a good atmosphere for chess in the country,” Chauhan told K Y M C
IANS. The CAI was a rival organisation to AICF formed several years back and conducted tour naments. On its part, the AICF not only filed a case against CAI but also, banned the players who had participated in the tournaments organised by its rival. In order to re-admit the banned chess players into its fold, AICF demanded the full prize money and later some portion of that from the players who had won the CAI organised tournaments. The AICF also sought an apology letter from the players for readmission. “We had to travel a
long distance to attend to the case that was filed in the Madras High Court,” Harsh a former player and an advocate practicing tax laws hailing from Rajasthan said. As to the legal formalities of the merger, Harsh said AICF and CAI are registered societies. Under the Societies Act, one organisation can go for dissolution and transfer the assets and liabilities to another. “While there are no liabilities for CAI, there will be some cash balance and some chess boards and clocks. These will now go to AICF,” Harsh said. According to him, the state units affiliated with
CAI may also get merged with the state units of AICF over a period of time. Both Chauhan and Harsh said there was no agreement on offering positions in AICF to the office bearers of CAI. “The AICF elections got over and no post can be offered to anyone,” Chauhan said. While the CAI treaty will bring in little money to AICF’s coffers, it is the peace deal with AICF-Calicut that is expected to boost its cash balance. It was late P.T.Ummer Koya, a former FIDE Vice President and AICF Secretary who had registered AICF in Calicut in 1991. Opposing this, chess officials in Tamil Nadu filed a case saying that the AICF registered in Chennai is the real chess body registered in long back and got a favourable verdict. There is also a case pending between AICF and AICF-Calicut. As per the current scheme of things, the AICF will withdraw the pending case against AICF-Calicut and get its cash balance. “Calicut AICF funds will be transferred to AICF soon. It is around Rs.1.30
crore,” Chauhan said. Be that as it may, the merger of CAI with AICF as things stand now is not going to benefit the players who were banned or who were penalised their prize monies by the latter. “I welcome AICF President Kapoor’s decision to agree to merge CAI with AICF. But there are some issues,” said Gurpreet Pal Singh a chess player and who was banned by AICF. “Over 100 chess players had suffered as AICF had banned them for playing in CAI conducted tournaments. In order to readmit them to its fold, the AICF had asked the players to pay it the prize monies won in the CAI tournaments,” Singh said. “With the merger of CAI with AICF, the next logical step for AICF is to pay back the prize monies collected from the players as a penalty. This will generate goodwill for AICF,” Singh said. He also said the AICF should also withdraw its appeal filed with the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) against the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) order.
L O N D O N, AU G 2 4 (AGENCIES): Captain Gareth Bale remains committed to Wales as he aims to lead them to their first World Cup since 1958, says manager Robert Page. There were questions over Bale’s future with speculation before Euro 2020 he may retire after the tournament. The 32-yearold walked away when he was asked about his Wales future following the round of 16 defeat by Denmark. But Bale has been named in Wales’ squad for their World Cup qualifiers in September and intends to keep playing. “As a player, manager, you want to be part of a World Cup. The boys will go down in history if they qualify,” said Page. Real Madrid forward Bale is joined in the Wales squad by Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey. The star duo helped Wales reach the last 16 of this summer’s delayed Euro 2020 but have not played a qualifier together since 2019. There are no uncapped players as Page sticks with the bulk of his Euros squad.

Sarfraz Nawaz has written to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to nominate either Zaheer Abbas or Majid Khan as next chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), while urging his former new-ball partner against the possible appointment of Ramiz Raja, given his past record, Dawn reported. “Reports are circulating in the media that with your approval, it has been decided to replace Ehsan Mani with Ramiz Raja as the chairman PCB. In this regard, there is no doubt that as Patron in Chief of the PCB, you have a right to appoint anyone as the Chairman PCB,” the London-based Sarfraz wrote in a letter. Sarfraz further said, “If the news about your approval for appointment of Ramiz Raja as next chairman PCB is true, who blatantly and shamelessly advised Pakistan to become shameless by accepting the Indian supremacy and domination in the ICC [vehemently opposed by many renowned Pakistanis] and so much so that he [Ramiz] said that we should leave aside Pakistan in surrendering before the Indian hegemonist plan to rule the cricketing world through monopoly in the ICC”. “Although, you are the best judge of your decisions, but in my humble opinion highly respectable legend Majid Khan who in the past had excellent relations with all ICC board members, or Zaheer Abbas [ex-ICC president] may be appointed the next chairman of the PCB instead of Ramiz since his appointment will be against the national sentiments and also severely hurting the patriotic feelings of the entire nation.” K Y M C

Tokyo Paralympics start with glittering opening ceremony
TOKYO, AUG 24 (PTI/ IANS): In manner most fitting, the Tokyo Paralympics began here on Tuesday with the central theme of ‘We Have Wings’ in a colourful opening ceremony, depicting the para athletes’ endeavour to fly high in the face of unimaginable adversities. At times tugging at the heartstrings, the otherwise joyous and colourful opening ceremony -- the main character of which was a ‘little one-winged plane’ -- encapsulated the idea that every human being has its own wings, and by mustering courage and spreading them wide, it can go anywhere irrespective of which way the wind blows. Emperor Naruhito declared the Games open in front of a near-empty stadium before the Paralympic flag was carried into the National Stadium. International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons said the organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics can deliver a “safe” Games. “I cannot believe we are finally here,” said Parsons. “Many doubted this day would happen, many thought it was impossible. Thanks to the efforts of many, the most transformative event is happening.
“Organisers never lost faith and have worked tirelessly along with the Japanese Government.” Prior to that, the ceremony paid homage to the resilience of para athletes while giving the message of moving forward amid the unrelenting devastation being caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Paralympics have returned to Tokyo for the first time in 57 years, making the Japanese capital the first ever city to host the Games twice. The ceremony was set in a ‘Para Airport’ -- a symbol of diversity and inclusion -- and began with a video that depicted the strength of para athletes. In the video, a gentle breeze turned into a huge gust of wind that reached the stadium and swept through the field of play. Following this, a group of crew members, who work at the airport, began a countdown at the end of which fireworks lit up the night sky to celebrate the start of the Games. IPC chief Parsons and Naruhito were welcomed to the stadium following which the Japanese flag was carried to the stage by six individuals including Kaori Icho, four-times Olympic freestyle wrestling champion and Takumi As-

tani, a rescue worker. Sombre music played in the background. After introducing the 22 sports and events at Tokyo 2020, a colourful line of light appeared at the end of the first video, which then transformed into the runway of the Para Airport. Giant propellers and balloons surrounded the outer stage, forming the Agitos symbol of the Paralympics. After the Parade of Nations came the ‘little onewinged plane’ - performed by young 13-year-old wheelchair-bound Yui Wago, who had never acted before. The little one-winged plane
does not believe she can fly. But inspired by the others around her -- a group of vehicles who are unlike anyone she has ever met before including a huge, dazzling truck and his companions -she musters enough courage and confidence and returns to Para Airport, where she heads towards the runway in the darkness alone. The crew join her, begin clapping to a beat and cheer her on. Before long, she takes off into the night sky, her wing shining brightly. Meanwhile, during the Parade of Nations, catching everyone’s attention, a guide dog helped lead the Israeli team out.
Tek Chand leads Indian contingent Tek Chand, who will compete in shot put, led the Indian contingent out during the opening ceremony after replacing high-jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu as the flag bearer at the last minute after the latter came in close contact of a COVID positive person during his flight to Tokyo. Apart from Tek Chand, others in the opening included chef de mission Gursharan Singh, deputy chef de mission Arhan Bagati, the contingent’s other administrative staff and one coach, Satyanarayana. This edition of the showpiece will feature an unprecedented 4403 athletes. The previous record was 4328 which was set at the Rio 2016 Games. The Tokyo edition will have 2550 male athletes and 1853 female athletes vying for the top honours. India is being represented by its largest ever delegation of 54 athletes in competitions spread across 12 days.
No athletes, but Afghanistan flag included in opening ceremony Though their home-based athletes and representatives could not make it to Tokyo for the Paralympic Games, Afghanistan’s flag was carried as part of the Opening Ceremony parade here on Tuesday. Zakia Khudadadi, who is the first female athlete from Afghanistan to qualify for the Paralympic Games in taekwondo, and some National Paralympic Committee (NPC) officials could not make it to the Games because of the chaos in the country after the Taliban ousted the elected government and took
control of the country. Flights to and from the country are not operational following the regime change and that was one of the reasons why the team could not make it to Tokyo. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) decided to include the Afghanistan flag in solidarity with the athletes who were denied a chance to participate in the Paralympic Games. The IPC has invited the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative here to act as the flag bearer.

L O N D O N, A U G 2 4 (AFP): West Ham extended their perfect start to the season as Michail Antonio became the club’s record Premier League goalscorer with a double in their 4-1 win against 10-man Leicester on Monday. David Moyes’ side took the lead through Pablo Fornals’ first half goal at the London Stadium. Leicester’s Ayoze Perez was sent off for a dangerous stamp on Fornals just before half-time. Said Benrahma bagged West Ham’s second after the break before Youri Tielemans got one back for Leicester. Antonio went into the game tied with Paolo Di Canio on a joint-record 47 goals for West Ham in the Premier League era. The 31-year-old took sole possession of the record with a brace in the closing stages as West Ham followed up last weekend’s 4-2 win at Newcastle with another four-goal blitz. table and look capable of emulating last season’s sixth place finish. The Hammers have won their opening two fixtures of a Premier League campaign for only the second time. West Ham were the only team to beat Leicester twice in the league last season and they maintained that hold over Brendan Rodgers’ men as the FA Cup holders slumped to
their first defeat of the new campaign. Allowed a capacity crowd for the first time since February 2020 after the easing of coronavirus restrictions, West Ham fed off the fans’ energy in a fast start that saw Benrahma’s 20yard curler saved by Kasper Schmeichel. Containing Leicester effectively and launching counter-attacks at will, West
Ham’s confident display was rewarded in the 26th minute. A sweeping move ended with Fornals finding Benrahma wide on the left before racing into the area to meet the cross with a clipped finish into the far corner from 12 yards. Leicester suffered a self-inflicted wound in the 40th minute when Michael Oliver sent off Perez after
consulting the pitchside monitor to review the forward’s reckless stamp on Fornals’ ankle. In the 56th minute, Caglar Soyuncu played a woeful backpass towards Schmeichel without looking and Antonio intercepted. Antonio slipped the ball to the unmarked Benrahma and the Algerian smashed in his first goal at the London Stadium since signing from Brentford last season. Against the run of play, Tielemans stabbed home from close-range after West Ham failed to clear James Maddison’s 69th minute cross. But Antonio wrapped up the points with 10 minutes remaining when he took Declan Rice’s cross, held off Soyuncu and swivelled to blast past Schmeichel. After celebrating his goal by holding up a large cardboard cut-out of himself on the touchline, Antonio produced another memorable moment in the 84th minute.
