Govt will go all out to facilitate solution: Rio example, Rio said there are 23 wards presently without the elected councillors. He said the entire wards were administered by one administrator and with people voiceless like a situation under president's rule. He said the decision for nomination was taken in the presence of the civil society organizations in view of an opposition-less government.
Correspondent KOHIMA, NOV 23 (NPN):
State chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday affirmed that his government was ready to go all out to facilitate a solution to the vexed Naga political issue. Addressing the 4th general convention of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) at its newly constructed office building here, the chief minister also informed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had recently asked him to go to Delhi, soon after conclusion of the ensuing Assembly session, to discuss some issues with regard to the Naga political issue. Rio said he had been told to go to Delhi with Assam chief minister and North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) chairman Himanta Biswa Sarma, as the latter has been involved in the Naga issue. Rio said he was hopeful that some honourable solution would take place soon. On the issue of nominations to the Urban

Local Bodies (ULBs), Rio said the cabinet met with ENPO, CNTC and TPO during which the tribal bodies were told that the state cannot get grants for municipal and town councils if ULB elections were held without women reservation and taxation. He said while the rest of the country followed the Panchayati Raj system, Nagaland has its own rural local bodies in the form of village councils, village development board (VDB). He said Nagaland was exempted from Panchayati Raj
through the 73rd Amendment of the Parliament Act for Rural Administration. However, he said the 74th Amendment, for urban local bodies, was mandatory for the whole country. Rio said Nagas wanted to apply rural administration over urban areas because of lack of understanding about the two amendments. He said that since urban areas were cosmopolitan in nature and inhabited by people from all parts of the country, the urban areas in Nagaland would also have to follow the Act of
Parliament which has been applied all over the country. Rio said women reservation would also have to be included in ULB polls until the State makes some arrangements of its own or get some concessions from the ministry. Rio however, said until such time, Nagaland will have to abide by the regulations passed by the amended Act. Further, he said that since there was an elected government in place, it has the authority to nominate people to run the ULBs. Citing Dimapur as an

Big third wave unlikely: Experts ‘HYBRID’ IMMUNITY, VACCINATION BEHIND LOW COVID CASES NEW DELHI, NOV 23 (PTI): The worst of India’s Covid crisis could be over, feel experts. With cases continuously dipping even after Diwali and a large section of the population already exposed to the virus, there is less likelihood of a big third wave striking the country, according to several health experts. Experts also credit a timely step up in the vaccination campaign for the downslide in fresh cases. They said that while there is always the possibility of a new more transmissible variant (like Delta), the possibility the third wave would be as devastating as the second is highly unlikely. Covid cases may rise, perhaps across late December-February, but the impact will be milder than what India experienced in the second wave when thousands died and many thousands more were hospitalised. Hybrid immunity: Experts feel that India’s Covid slowdown is primarily due
to hybrid immunity that has kicked in over the last few months. Many scientific studies suggest that people who become naturally infected with Covid and recover before vaccination develop “hybrid immunity”, better immunity than those who only have antibodies from vaccination. Several sero surveys conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have found that a high percentage of the population had been exposed to Covid during the second wave. The latest survey, the findings of which was released in July, showed that over one-third of India’s population had already been exposed to Covid. This is further boosted by an uptick in vaccination in the last few months India has partially vaccinated well over half its population while nearly 30% of the people are now fully vaccinated against Covid. Accounting for just the adult population - who are
currently eligible for vaccination - around 82 per cent has received the first dose of the vaccine while around 43 per cent has been fully inoculated. Vi r o l o g i s t A nu r a g Agrawal said the low number of cases can be attributed to a high fraction of the population being infected by the Delta variant during the second wave, followed by most adults having received at least one vaccine dose further boosting the immune response. “Serosur veys have shown that the majority of the population is likely to have been infected,” Agrawal, director of the CSIRInstitute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi, told PTI. It is a well-established fact that complete vaccination as well as previous exposure with SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes Covid-19, lead to a significant decrease in the severity of the disease, added immunologist Vineeta Bal. (NPN): Expressing dismay over the “unfortunate development” within the NSCN (R), the Sümi Kükami Hoho (SKH) Tuesday said it condemned split within the political groups “as such move would only jeopardize and prolong the much awaited solution.” In a press note, SKH president H Kashito Yepthomi, general secretary Hetoho S Zhimomi and finance secretary Ghuhevi Khujumi said that at a time when Nagas were “eagerly anticipating final political solution of the vexed Indo-Naga issue”, further defragmentation within the Naga political groups (NPGs) was “unwelcomed and undesired.” Reiterating the stand and the resolution of the 14
Nagaland GBs Federation and other Nagaland based organisation, SKH affirmed that it did not support any particular group, but “firmly reject” any split within NPGs. SKH, therefore, urged upon both Wangtin Naga and Akato Chophi to sit together and “work out the differences and reconcile and come together as it is the desire of the people.” Further, SKH has appealed to the “NNPG leaders to reconsider and revoke the expulsion order of Ino Akato Chophi but intervene once again to see that the differences are buried once and for all.” SKH urged all the political groups to be united and pursue for early solution to the protracted Naga issue.

Claiming that the Rengmas had also toiled under the same sun as any other tribe for the Naga cause, Polem said the community was yet to receive its due. NPF only party that truly worked for Naga issue: TR Zeliang RPP appeals to whistle-blowers to report anomalies of projects
DIMAPUR: NPF Legislature Party leader T.R. Zeliang on Tuesday said that NPF was the only political party that truly worked and talked about Naga political issue. Addressing the NPF Central Women wing coordination meeting at the party’s central office in Kohima, Zeliang said: “Many political parties talk about Naga political issue during the election time but NPF’s principle is purely for the Naga cause.” He further claimed that NPF walked the talk when it came to Naga political issue and recalled how it had called for an all-party meeting and included civil society groups while in power and had adopted a resolution not to distribute party tickets or file nomination for the 2018 Assembly elections as part of “solution before election”. He reminded how BJP had walked out of the resolution
the same day. Stressing on women’s role in society, Zeliang pointed out that NPF was the only party that truly believed that women have vital role in the society and hence it had announced 33% reservation to urban local bodies (ULBs) in 2017 while in power. But, he regretted that due to hue and cry from the public, this did not materialise. Speaking on Manipur Assembly elections scheduled next year, he expressed confidence that NPF would secure more seats. He also called upon women to come forward and play their role in politics for shaping the society. NPF president Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu, who also spoke on the occasion, reminded that the party was formed in the midst of blood and tears and with a purpose for Naga people. He said that other political parties were formed for
grabbing power and money, while claiming that NPF was formed purely for the benefit Naga people. Asserting that NPF belonged to every Naga people, he remarked that some leaders currently in other political parties might join NPF one day as it belonged to no one but the Naga people. constructing road Political violence in Tripura affects Tripura polls: SC seeks detailed Mizoram inside Assam forest: Govt reputation of party, PM: BJP MLAs security arrangement plan
NEW DELHI, NOV 23 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a detailed security arrangement plan from the Tripura government to ensure free and fair municipal elections slated on November 25 and also for the declaration of results. A bench headed by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud was hearing a contempt plea by All India Trinamool Congress claiming that law and order situation is worsening in the state, as the date for local body elections draws closer and the government authorities have not followed the top court’s direction on security arrangements. Ju s t i c e C h a n d r a chud asked senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing the Tripura government, to bring on record the detailed security arrangement, which will be in place to ensure free and fair local body elections, and also the

Justice Chandrachud asked Jethmalani to come back with instructions, from the DGP and home secretary, at 12.45 p.m. The top court also sought to know the presence of the central paramilitary forces so that the same can be deployed to the areas. On November 11, the Supreme Court asked the Tripura Police to ensure that none of the political parties were prevented from exercising their rights

to campaign, for the upcoming local body elections, in a peaceful manner. On Monday, a counsel mentioned the contempt petition before a bench headed by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. Citing the earlier writ petition in connection with the Tripura elections, the counsel submitted that the top court had passed directions for the arrangement of security, but the situation is worsening. He added that recent incidents happened and they are happening across the board now, and insisted for urgent hearing of the contempt petition in the matter. The counsel said: “The situation is very volatile. It requires the court’s considerations...” On November 11, the top court had said: “We expect that necessary arrangements will be made by the state government and the DGP along with law enforcement machinery of the state.”
GUWAHATI, NOV 23 (PTI): The Assam government alleged on Tuesday that people from Mizoram were constructing a road inside a reserve forest within its territory in the Hailakandi district, in a fresh escalation between the two Northeastern states. Hailakandi Superintendent of Police Gaurav Upadhyay said the road was being constructed near the remote Haticherra village inside the reserve forest over the last few days. “We first got the information from the Forest Department about the road being built on our side. Subsequently, we contacted the Mizoram counterparts, who then stopped the construction. There was no activity in the last two days. “However, we got information that three JCBs were seen today at the location. So, Hailakandi DC and I will visit the spot on Wednesday with officials concerned and do a spot verification. Only then we will be able to tell the details,” Upadhyay told PTI.
Tension brewed between Assam and Mizoram along the inter-state border in Hailakandi district on October 29 after a “lowintensity blast” near the Baicherra forward outpost of the Assam Police and the arrest of a Mizoram Police personnel for his alleged involvement in it. At least six Assam Police personnel and one civilian were killed and more than 50 people injured as the festering border dispute between the two Northeastern states erupted into a bloody conflict on July 26. On August 17 again, miscreants from Mizoram opened fire on workers engaged in the construction of a road in Hailakandi district that was retaliated by the police force of the state. On August 20, a few workers from Mizoram were trying to build a bridge at Kachurthal in Ramnathpur police station area. Around 40-50 security personnel from Mizoram reached the bridge site when Assam Police had objected to the construction.
AGARTALA, NOV 23 (IANS): Dissident BJP MLAs on Tuesday said that the political violence in Tripura damaged the reputation and credibility of the party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and this might affect the party’s poll prospects in the upcoming assembly elections in five states including Uttar Pradesh. Rebel MLAs of the ruling BJP Sudip Roy Barman and Ashis Kumar Saha said that the Supreme Court, Tripura High Court and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had to intervene into the recent political violence in Tripura ahead of Thursday’s civic polls. “About the political violence causing damage to the reputation and credibility of the BJP, we have apprised in details to National President J.P. Nadda, National General Secretary (Organisation) B. L. Santhosh and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday,” Barman told the media.
IMPHAL, NOV 23: Meghalaya chief minister and NPP national president Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday expressed worry on the ugly political scenario in the pollbound state of Manipur. Sangma, who is currently camping in Imphal to take part in election campaigns of the party, accused some leaders of political parties and sitting legislators of the state of leading youths in the wrong path for their political gain. The NPP leader was referring to a recent series of poll-related violence in-

The open dissent and internal dispute in the ruling BJP began after Barman, who was holding the Health and Information Technology departments, was sacked from the ministry in May 2019 following differences with Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. On October 31, a BJP MLA and a scheduled Caste leader Ashis Das joined the Trinamool Congress here at a rally in presence of the party’s National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

D I M A P U R , N OV 2 3 (NPN): Nagaland state unit National People’s Party (NPP) has strongly condemned BJP national vicepresident and Meghalaya in-charge Dr. M Chuba Ao for making a veiled attack on the party and demanded an “immediate, unconditional and appropriate public apology” from him. Chuba had reportedly stated during an interview with a newsdaily on November 20 that “These regional parties with national outlook have one agenda– go to Delhi with a begging bowl...” In a press release, NPP State unit stated that the immature statement of Chuba not only presented people of the Northeast in poor light, but also caused irreparable damage to the party’s image as a national party with regional outlook. No party can survive by creating enmity among the people.” The BJP MLA, also a former minister, said that Tripura witnessed so many Chief Ministers but the incumbent Chief Minister is not following any political grammar. “Despite so much of political violence in Tripura, the state Home Minister (Biplab Kumar Deb) has made no statement. Police turned into powerless tools. CPI-M goons entered into the party and they are being utilised to obtain political gain,” he claimed. NPP called upon all right-thinking political leaders, even from BJP, to condemn such immature statements from a senior party functionary that did not go down well with its senior leaders led by its national president Sangma. The party said it did not understand why a senior leader like Chuba made such a “nefarious” statement to belittle a well-established national party, which was an ally of the BJP-led NDA government. Since, Chuba belonged to Nagaland, NPP said it was equally embarrassed by such a vociferous and shameful statement directed at it and Meghalaya Chief Minister, who was also its national president

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in February 2019 had directed the Assam Rifles to shift its battalion headquarters from Aizawl to Zokhawsang by May 31 that year. However, it was not done so far. The base of the country’s oldest paramilitary force is located on a vast stretch of land in the heart of Aizawl since 1917. The Mizoram chief minister informed Shah that his government is undertaking bamboo development projects to uplift the state’s economy and sought the Centre’s help to construct link roads to successfully implement them.

Manish Tiwari slams UPA for non response to 26/11
he said. The nation would observe the 13th anniversary of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks this week. Citing excerpts of the book, the BJP on Tuesday alleged that the grand old party-led UPA government put the national security at stake by not responding strongly after the Mumbai terror attacks. Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said this confirms that the UPA government was “useless”.
(From p-1) The chief minister, therefore, said that until an election was held, the gover nment decided to formulate a plan to nominate councillors to head the ULBs. He said that out of 23 wards in Dimapur, 10 councillors would be nominated that included, one male and one female each from BJP, NPF and NDPP. He said all three female candidates will make up the 33% reservation. Rio further said one each will be nominated by ENPO, CNTC and TPO while the tenth will be nominated by the government. He said the same formula would be applied in all the districts with the concerned apex body making the nominations. He said willing candidates can take up the nomination process while those not willing can stay away from the process. On the issue of SARFAESI Act, Rio said the
state government was planning to make some amendments in the Act, which would enable the indigenous Nagas to avail bank loans after mortgaging their land or property. He said the mortgaged land or properties will not be sold / auctioned off by banks to non-Nagas even if the borrower defaulted in repaying loan. He said the clause would enable Nagas to get loans at minimal interest and avoid going to private money lenders and loan sharks. On the issue of Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN), Rio said this was a necessity since there were many false certificates possessed by non-Nagas who use them to compete with indigenous Nagas for competitive examinations or employment opportunities. Sinha, who has been tracking the reproductive number (R-value) for the country since the beginning of the pandemic, said there has been no post-festival spike at least at the national scale but there was a spike before the season set in. R-value is the number of people getting infected by an already infected person on average. According to Vineeta Bal, the spread of asymptomatic or symptomatic Covid-19 during the second wave was possibly on a much bigger scale in India as compared
to Europe. “This is apparent from sporadic serosurveys though such generalisation is associated with difficulties. Va c c i n a t i o n c ove r a ge, especially that of first dose, has significantly improved,” Bal said. “Besides the winter is not that severe, as in Europe, in many parts of the country. Based on this, my prediction is there might be some increase in cases in India in the forthcoming months, but it is unlikely to reach very huge proportions,” she added. Agrawal said although the immediate future for the Covid-19 situation in India “looks fine,” the long-term future depends on multiple factors including new variants.

Citing reported excerpts of senior Congress leader Manish Tewari’s new book, the BJP on Tuesday alleged that the grand old party-led UPA government put the national security at stake by not responding strongly after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said this confirms that the UPA government was “useless”. According to reports, Tewari, who was a Union minister in the UPA government, has criticised the erstwhile dispensation for not actioning “a kinetic response in the days following India’s 9/11” in his book -- ‘10 Flash Points; 20 Years - National Security Situations that Impacted India’. Bhatia said Tewari’s book confirms that the “Congress-led UPA government was insensitive, useless and was even not concerned about national security”. The UPA government had put the national security at stake, he alleged. In a tweet on Tuesday, Tewari, MP from Anandpur Sahib, said that his book will be available in the market very soon. As many as 166 people were killed in the Mumbai terror attacks carried out by 10 Pakistani terrorists at different places in the city. The attacks began on November 26, 2008, and went on till November 29. Ajmal Kasab, the only terrorist who was captured alive, was hanged four years later on November 21, 2012.

Minister Amit Shah about the operations of “fundamental group” PFI and how no action has been taken by the Pinarayi Vijayan government against the accused. He also alleged that police is not taking action against the culprits of these killings as there is nexus between the ruling CPI(M) and PFI. BJP’s Kerala unit had alleged that the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political arm of PFI, was behind the killings, an allegation denied by SDPI.
NEW DELHI, NOV 23 ( AGENCIES): The Trinamool Congress (TMC) Tuesday inducted three new leaders — Kirti Azad, Ashok Tanwar and Pavan K. Varma, all former MPs — into the party as part of its efforts to go national, reports The Print. While Azad, a former cricketer, has been in both the Congress and the BJP, Tanwar is a former Haryana Congress chief once known to be close to Rahul Gandhi. Varma is a former Janata Dal (United) leader who was removed from the party in 2020 alongside Prashant Kishor, whose political consultancy I-PAC counts the TMC as a client. He will also be going to Goa. He will also come to Kolkata. Then he will go all across Haryana. I will come to Haryana once you are ready. Close to my house. No difference in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab,” Mamata added.

Rio said the party had suffered a huge loss over the demise of Imtikumzuk Longkumer, Vikho-o Yhoshü, CM Chang and Toshi Wungtung. He said the past leaders had contributed much to the party as legislators and party workers. Urging party workers to take responsibility, Rio said it was not only the party leaders but every member was equally responsible to help the party grow. Later in a tweet, the Samajwadi leader said, “Shri Jayant Chaudhary ji ke saath badlav ke ore (With Jayant for change).” When asked Rashtriya Lok Dal state president Masood Ahmad said that both the leaders met in the state capital and “there is a discussion on seat sharing”.

Tewari has also hit out at the Modi government, alleging that the scrapping of the Mountain Strike Corps is the “greatest disservice” that this government did to India’s national security. The former minister said in July 2018, the defence and finance ministers of the subsequent Modi-led government shelved all the plans of raising the Mountain Strike Corps against China citing financial constraints. Mounting pressure on the LAC leading to the Doklam crisis in 2017 could have been averted provided the mountain strike corps would have been raised, trained, resourced and efficaciously deployed, he said. “Scrapping the Mountain Strike Corps is perhaps the greatest disservice that this government did to India’s national security,” Tewari said.

NEW DELHI, NOV 23 (PTI): Congress leader Manish Tewari has in his latest book criticised the UPA government for its response to the 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes, saying restraint is not a sign of strength and that India should have taken kinetic action following the attack. Tewari is a member of the ‘Group of 23’ leaders who had written to Sonia Gandhi seeking organisational overhaul and elections for every post in the Congress party. “Happy to announce that my Fourth Book will be in the market shortly ‘10 Flash Points; 20 Years - National Security Situations that Impacted India’.

n 2001, the government of Nagaland introduced and passed the Nagaland Municipal Act with regard to urban local bodies(municipal and town councils) in respect of the 74th Amendment to the constitution under Article 243T for reservation of seats for SC/ST and women. Under this amendment, the discretion of the state Government has been drastically curtailed in the sense that it has now constitutional obligations to set up the Municipalities as per article 243T. The criteria to set up the municipalities have been fixed and now it is more rational and scientific. With this act, the district planning has been given the Constitutional Status. Due to this the planning process itself has changed. However, the ULB elections in 2004 were held without women reservations. Before the next scheduled ULB election was to be held in 2009 the issue got embroiled in court battle when the women group and also the state government fought it out in the court. Under pressure, the government in 2006 then amended the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 by inserting Section 23A to the Nagaland Municipal Act which made Part IX A operative. The amendment made by the DAN-I government appeared to have been done as constitutional obligations under Part IXA of Article 243T. However the ULB elections in 2009 could not be held owing to massive protests by various apex tribal organisations who opposed 33% women reservation. This amendment was vehemently opposed by various tribal organisations on the ground that it was said to be in conflict with Article 371A which is considered a sacred law as it gave special protection to Nagas of Nagaland from any law passed by parliament in respect of religious or social practices, Naga customary law and procedure, administration of civil and criminal justice involving decisions according to Naga customary law, ownership and transfer of land and resources. The government found itself caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. The court battle also led to the government passing another resolution on September 22,2012 to make Article IXA operative in the Municipal Act 2001. The ruling DAN-III government then hurriedly convened the house where the one-day sitting on November 24,2016 revoked the September 22,2012 . On December 15,2017 the Nagaland Legislative Assembly then passed the resolution revoking the November 24,2016 resolution that had made Article 243T of Part IXA inoperative. Polls were announced but tribal organisations vehemently opposed it and ultimately the government withdrew the notification till the matter was resolved. Protests against women’s quota turned violent and NMA withdrew its name from the SLP. Presently, the NDDP-led NDA coalition government planned to take the middle path- funcionalise ULBs but with nominees and avoid holding elections since this would invite complications. However, even on this there are objections from political parties. The Congress has pointed out that there was no provision for nominating advisory councils as elections are mandatory. Further, the party also reminded that though the NMA had withdrawn its Special Leave Petition(SLP) filed in the Supreme Court on the issue, yet the case was retained by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties(PUCL) and therefore, the government’s notification for nomination was subjudice . The government should have taken court matter more seriously since the SLP has the potential of attracting court judgment against Article 371A.
DailyDevotion The Distraction of Contempt
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us! For we are exceedingly filled with contempt. —Psalm 123:3 What we must beware of is not damage to our belief in God but damage to our Christian disposition or state of mind. “Take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously” (Malachi 2:16). Our state of mind is powerful in its effects. It can be the enemy that penetrates right into our soul and distracts our mind from God. There are certain attitudes we should never dare to indulge. If we do, we will find they have distracted us from faith in God. Until we get back into a quiet mood before Him, our faith is of no value, and our confidence in the flesh and in human ingenuity is what rules our lives. Beware of “the cares of this world…” (Mark 4:19). They are the very things that produce the wrong attitudes in our soul. It is incredible what enormous power there is in simple things to distract our attention away from God. Refuse to be swamped by “the cares of this world.” Another thing that distracts us is our passion for vindication. St. Augustine prayed, “O Lord, deliver me from this lust of always vindicating myself.” Such a need for constant vindication destroys our soul’s faith in God. Don’t say, “I must explain myself,” or, “I must get people to understand.” Our Lord never explained anything— He left the misunderstandings or misconceptions of others to correct themselves. When we discern that other people are not growing spiritually and allow that discernment to turn to criticism, we block our fellowship with God. God never gives us discernment so that we may criticize, but that we may intercede.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2021
Post-mortem
Abrahamia: A new faith on the horizon?
News reports about a new faith to be implemented globally, has caused consternation amongst the people and also raised questions about its validity and designs behind it. Recently in this era of conspiracy theories, in vogue particularly after the onset of the Covid pandemic, I recently received a message on WhatsApp. The message gave a link to a report published by BBC Hindi with details about a new faith to be introduced soon in the world and which will be called ‘Abrahamia’. According to reports the new faith will likely appear in the Middle East. Further research revealed that this not a new phenomenon but a project, and as described by the BBC was set in motion soon after the signing of Abraham Accord between Israel and the UAE, Morocco, Sudan and Bahrain normalising relations with Israel. This new faith was pur portedly denounced by the Grand Imam of Al Azhar Sheikh Ahmed Al Tayyab at the recent 10th anniversary celebrations of the Egypt Family House, an organisation devoted to promote interfaith relations and coexistence. The Grand Imam described the new faith as one, which will not have any soul, sense or guidance. Many people are still wondering that why did the Sheikh raised this
issue when most of the people even don’t have a clue about it? What is Abrahamia? As per unverified reports Abrahamia will combine the core principles of the three-monotheistic faiths- Christianity, Islam and Judaism. The name of the alleged faith is taken from Prophet “Ibrahim, the father of the prophets” from whose family all other faiths of the book have flowed. Egyptian General Khairat Shukri in an interview with RT Arabic has warned that the Abrahamia will allegedly unify all the faiths in the Middle East and is an evil plan made by the US and Israel. He further revealed to RT Arabic that the Abrahamia is a new schema that is ‘not less dangerous’ than Henry Campbell’s document of 1907, which resulted in the forming of the Zionist state; saying that the new faith might be a follow up plan to the ancient Campbell’s document to force people to acquiesce and normalise relations with Israel, and it purports to solve all ‘the Middle Eastern crises.’ On social media too, the new faith has been slammed, some described the possible ideas of the Abrahamia as more of an evil plan to benefit Israel and the US as well as to force more Arab countries
to normalise relations with the occupying nation. On social media many religious personalities also have voiced their concern and called on people to stick to their faith and not be tricked into such ‘fake’ propagandas. In addition many people have pointed out the conspiracy theories angle, like establishment of a New World Religious Order- under which there will only be one major faith throughout the world, with major portions borrowed from the Judaism. A person has linked the Abrahamia to an under construction project in Abu Dhabi, UAE which will be ready by 2022, claiming it will be the first place for the new worshippers to pray in. While another user has linked the new faith with devil worshipping claiming that it is already found among the Freemasons’ beliefs. Abrahamic Family House This new cultural landmark in the UAE capital, which includes a synagogue, a church and a masjid, and is meant to be a beacon of understanding and peaceful coexistence, inspired by the Document on Human Fraternity will be opened to the public in 2022. As reported by the Vatican News website, constructed on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, the
capital of the UAE, the project is closely followed by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam Ahmed Al Tayyab of Al Azhar, who have also endorsed the design. The names of the three separate iconic houses of worship in the Abrahamic Family House complex were officially unveiled as “Imam Al Tayyeb Mosque,” “St. Francis Church,” and “Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue”. Besides the 3 places of worship, the site includes a cultural centre that aims to encourage people to exemplify human fraternity and solidarity within a community that cherishes the values of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, while the unique character of each faith is preserved. In a statement Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture, Government of Abu Dhabi has described the Abrahamic Family House epitomising interfaith harmonious coexistence and preserving the unique character of each faith. Abrahamic Faiths The Abrahamic faiths—most prominently Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—are those faiths that trace their origins to the Israelite prophet Abraham and are also called faiths of the book. In the past both Chris-
tianity and Islam have been particularly successful at seeding any new religious movement. In Christianity, Protestantism has been an especially fertile ground for new religious movements (NRMs). J. Gordon Melton’s edited Encyclopaedia of Protestantism gives historical and cultural context for Christian-derived NRMs, while displaying the tradition’s heterogeneous nature. Although many Christian offshoots (e.g., Mormonism and Christian Science) have achieved a degree of mainstream acceptance, others, like the Unification Church and the Family International, remain on the cultural fringes. Islam, like Christianity, is a world faith with a long history, millions of adherents, and many derivative religious sects. The twovolume Encyclopaedia of Islam and the Muslim World, edited by Richard Martin, covers the multifaceted nature of modern Islam, including the convergence of the faith with socialism, NRMs like the mystical Iranian Shaykhiyya, and “anti-cult” movements like the anti-Baha’i Hojjatieh Society. The Encyclopaedia of Islam in the United States, edited by Jocelyne Cesari, focuses on Islam in the United States. It details American NRMs like the Nation of Islam, the Muslim Peace Fellowship, and the
Naqshbandi-Haqqani Sufi Order. Global Salafism: Islam’s New Religious Movement, edited by Roel Meijer, describes the Islamic NRMs such as the Salafi and Wahhabi Muslims. Modern Islamic movements also include progressive and moderate NRMs, like the Gülen movement, originating in Turkey in the 1980s. Gülenism is a social/civic movement within mainstream Islam that advocates ideas like the separation of church and state and interfaith dialogue. It is also notable for the high level of organisation and commitment found among its members, which has resulted in the epithet “cult” being used against it. But the moot question remains that how this new faith will be promoted and new adherents converted, as the NRMs have been unable to assert themselves as an option or alternative to any major faith, and historically each faith has labelled NRMs as deviant sects not as separate faiths. Brahmaputra Dilemma: A Geopolitical Aspect of Water on Sino-Indian Relations Introduction The Brahmaputra is one of the major rivers in South Asia that originated from Himalaya. It is called Yarlung Tsangpo by the Tibetans and Tsan-Po by the Chinese. The river originates from a glacier around Mt. Kailash/Mansarovar and flows at an average altitude of 4,000 metres in Tibet. It is considered to be the highest river on earth. It flows eastwards over 2,057 km in Tibet and took Uturn which is called Great Bend in the Brahmaputra, the point in the Himalayas where the river curves south into India’s state Arunachal Pradesh where it is known as Sing, and then, moves to Assamese plain and finally enters Bangladesh at Bahadurabad Ghat. In Bangladesh, the width of the river varies from 2 km to 12 km. In total, the length of the river from its place of origin in Tibet to the sea is about 2,840 km. China’s population and economy have continued to grow, so its water requirement is ever increasing. Industrialisation and urbanisation have multiplied usage of clean water and, thus, made it further scarce. The northern and northwestern region of China is populated and its developments are concentrated in these areas, but holds only very little water resources. Acknowledging the gravity of water scarcity, China has responded in a number of ways in an attempt to tackle the problem but unable to solve the water menace with standard measures. China is now on verge to work on large-scale water project like the Southto-North Water Diversion to solve its water crisis in the country, more specifically, China considers this as ‘a must project’ for economic development to continue in northern China. Why China Need to Divert Brahmaputra? As China’s population and economy have grown, so have its water requirements. Due to the growth in Industrialisation and urbanisation usage of clean water too has risen and, thus, made it further scarce. Wa-
ter shortages have become prominent as the aquifer levels are dropping, lakes are disappearing, rivers are drying up, or becoming polluted. As per the statistics of the World Bank, due to widespread water pollution, 700 million people drink contaminated water every day. To add to this, the lopsided distribution of water in China has further compounded the problem. South China has 36.5 percent of the country’s total area, but holds 80.9 percent of the country’s total water resources. The northern and northwestern region makes up to 63.5 percent of the total territory, but holds only 19.1 percent of the country’s total water resources (Nair, 2011: 142). Thus, the North and NorthWestern part of China is dry, with little rainfall, and has a great need for water. There are vast areas of wilderness waiting for development, which really means they are waiting for large quantities of water to be brought in, because once they have water, the desert can become green, and only on that foundation can development begin (Arpi, 2014). Therefore, people are very interested in projects to bring water from the South to the North. With regard to the extremely difficult “western line” project, many tempting plans have been proposed for largescale water relocation. Acknowledging the gravity of water scarcity in some areas, China has responded in a number of ways in an attempt to tackle the problem. Local, regional and central governments have not only passed stringent laws and issued a number of policies/ regulations, but also made enormous efforts to reduce the effect by reforming water management strategies and adopting water saving technologies. However, many plans have failed to achieve their water quality and pollution control target (Addressing China’s Water Problem, 2004:113). Therefore, the inability to solve the water menace with standard measures like improving
efficiency in irrigation, reducing water wastage, recycling of water and controlling pollution, China is now focusing on large-scale water works like the Southto-North Water Diversion Project. Diversion of Brahmaputra The late Mao Zedong first proposed the idea of the water diversion project from South to North-West in 1952, to ease the growing water shortages in China’s north. However, it was only on August 23, 2002, after extensive research, planning and discussion that the project was approved for execution. The first component of the project would include construction of a gigantic dam for hydropower generation; the second for diversion of the waters northwards to feed its thirsty northwestern provinces through the western route of the South-North Water Transfer Project. Chinese engineers envisages building a vast tunnel under the ridge that separates the two arms of the Great Bend to divert 50 billion cubic meters of water a year from the northwestern flowing arm of the river to the south-eastern arm over a succession of nine cascading hydropower dams that will generate 40,000 MW of power ( Jha:2014). The original plan was proposed in the 1950s and 1960s, however, at that time, the project appeared too immense and costly to be undertaken. At present, armed with new technology, feasibility studies are being conducted by China to effect the diversion. In the first phase, China is planning to connect three tributaries of the Yangtze – the Jinsha, Yalong and Dadu rivers to the Yellow river, across mountains and the Tibet- Qinghai plateau, which would then carry it across north China; while in the second phase, the Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) waters are planned to be diverted northwest to feed the Yangtze. Though possible, the terrain complexities and technical difficulties make
the project challenging. However, it is likely that China, in spite of several difficulties would carry out its mission of SouthNorth water diversion project. As this water diversion project is the groundwork for the Yellow River shipping waterway project, and without it, there is no room to even talk about opening up the Yellow River for marine shipping. Because the Yellow River has only 50 billion cubic meters of flow per year not enough for drinking and industry (Arpi, 2014). This alternative route would allegedly transport over 200 billion cubic meters of water extracted annually from the Brahmaputra River at a point just to the southeast of Lhasa along a route moving north/northeast towards the headwaters of the Yellow River (Wirsing, 2012). Impact on Northeast India When the diversion of water from the river Brahmaputra is completed the Indian Northeast will see a severe disaster on its
environment and economy. An event, which occurred in June 2000, could be an illustration at a reduced scale of what could happen if the Tsangpo project is one day completed. At that time, the breach of a natural dam in Tibet led to severe floods and left over a hundred people dead or missing in Arunachal Pradesh. It is not difficult to understand that areas downstream in Arunachal or Assam are extremely vulnerable to what takes place upstream in Tibet. It is said that when Nehru visited the Indian side of the border and made a long vivid description of the damages and sufferings of the people. On his return from Assam, he made a broadcast to the nation on All Indian Radio (Selected Works of Jawaharlal Nehru, 1993:166): “It is said that the epicenter of the earthquake was somewhere in Tibet, near a place called Rima, some miles from the Assam frontier. We know nothing of what has happened in Tibet or on the mountainous regions of the border.
As a result of the landslides, rivers were blocked up for a while, and when they broke through, they came down with a rush and a roar, a high wall of water sweeping down and flooding large areas and washing away villages and fields and gardens. T h e s e r ive r s h ave changed their colour and carried some sulphurous and other material, which spread a horrible smell from some distance around them. The fish in them died. The remains of villages, animals, including cattle and elephants and, large quantities of timber floated down these raging waters. Paddy fields were destroyed, stocks of grains were washed away and some tea gardens also suffered great damage.” (To be Concluded...) Dr. Mhonthung Yanthan Asst. Sir,
Rise of unemployment, together we can stop unemployment
I am always been so proud holding one of the noblest professions in the world nurturing young minds and moulding them in to something great, until someone told me that teacher was a small job and I should be appearing NPSC. Here is my question. How can we erase the mentality of the Nagas that there is no small or big job? Every Nagas talk about the ‘Dignity of Labour’, however, only few meant it. Often times, people feel superior holding high post in the office despite holding the same qualifications. When we really mean the “Dignity of Labour” in letter and spirit, it is irrefutable that Nagas would be seeing capturing the economy of our state, but it’s always an empty gesture. Therefore, most of the economy have been captured by non-Nagas. Most Naga youths today have been trying hard to clear the states exam, NPSC which only few would make it. In fact, if the people who considered themselves a superior, support and encourage the youngsters about the ‘Dignity of Labour’, it is apparent that another individual would be treated equally regardless of the work/job they do. That way, the rise of unemployment could be gradually reduced to certain extent. However, the sad fact remains that Nagas respect only those people who holds high post in the office or have a name tagged in the society which impacted tremendously to the rise of unemployment. One should always not forget to remember that anyone can be a Teacher, Doctor, Engineers, Officers, Minister, Businessman etc. however, everyone can’t be a teacher, Dr., Er., bureaucrat, etc. When the Nagas take the Dignity of Labour seriously in practical and respect each other’s profession without discriminating anyone for the job they hold, rise of unemployment could be halted in the state. Modi government too has responded with the rhetoric of youth should be a job giver not a job seeker. ‘Together we can’. Lovely Irang, teacher, Government Primary School, Old Jalukie, Nagaland.

Plight of Punjab schools, teachers a misfortune: Kejriwal ent transfer policy, banning non-teaching work by teachers and permanent recruitment on vacant posts. Kejriwal along with AAP state president Bhagwant Mann was interacting with the media here. The party’s Punjab in-charge Jarnail Singh and co incharge Raghav Chadha were also present on the occasion. Recognising the importance of education and teachers for the development and uplift of society, the Delhi Chief Minister gave the first guarantee to create a ‘good environment for education’ in the state. He said just as a good atmosphere in education has been created in Delhi, a similar atmosphere would be created in Punjab under which a high standard of education would be provided.
caused, farmers were called naxalites, separatists, even terrorists and some of the ministers’ kin even mowing down people,” the former Union minister said. If that much animosity was there then what prompted the government to withdraw the laws, Pilot asked rhetorically and added that, “obviously there were political considerations”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced his government’s decision to repeal the three farm laws over which the farmers have been protesting over the past year on Delhi’s borders, urging them to return to their homes. Pilot alleged that there was no discussion held with the farmers’ unions before announcing the laws, which were imposed upon with
Violence in 2002 Gujarat riots perpetrated through design: Zakia Jafri tells SC
NEW DELHI, NOV 23 (PTI) : The violence in the 2002 Gujarat riots was perpetrated through a “design” which emanates from the documents, Zakia Jafri Tuesday told the Supreme Court while arguing that the Republic is like a ship that will only be steady if the “majesty of the law prevails”. Zakia Jafri, the wife of Zakia Jafri slain Congress leader Ehsan Jafri who was killed at Gul- abad on February 28, 2002, berg Society in Ahmed- during the violence, has
challenged the SIT’s clean chit to 64 people including Narendra Modi, the then Gujarat chief minister during the riots. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Zakia Jafri who has alleged larger conspiracy during the riots, told a bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar that this is a case where the majesty of the law has been “deeply injured”. Terming the 2002 incidents of Godhra and sub-
sequent riots as a “national tragedy of gargantuan proportions”, Sibal said the petitioner is concerned with how the majesty of the law will deal with such issues when men “behave like animals”. “These are not matters of an individual case of murder or violence committed. It is violence which was perpetrated through design and the design emanates from the documents,” he told the bench, also comprising Justices Dinesh Mahesh-
wari and C T Ravikumar while referring to the materials placed by Jafri. Sibal said that these documents were part of the official record and the SIT had not investigated these aspects. He said the petitioner is neither concerned with individuals nor pointing a finger or wish to prosecute A or B. “The issue is much larger than the issue of prosecuting individuals. It deals with the polity of this country. It deals with the manner
in which institutions are to act in a national emergency. This was a national emergency. What happened in Sabarmati (train) resulted in a national emergency,” Sibal said. The S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express was burnt at Godhra, killing 59 people and triggering riots in Gujarat in 2002. During the arguments, the senior advocate said what happened after the Sabarmati Express incident was equally a national tragedy.

AMRITSAR, NOV 23 (IANS): Aam Aadmi Party National Convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday termed the plight of government schools and teachers in Punjab as a misfortune. Kejriwal gave eight guarantees to teachers for comprehensive education reforms in Punjab and promised that these guarantees would be implemented on priority if the AAP government is formed in 2022. He also called upon all teachers to join the AAP’s campaign to transform the state’s government school education system like Delhi. The eight guarantees include creating a Delhilike environment in the education sector in Punjab, regularising outsourcing and contractual teachers, implementing a transpar-
The BJP president’s meeting with the Sikh community in the gurdwara comes weeks after the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, in which eight people including four Sikh farmers were killed. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, BJP state president Swatantra Dev Singh, BJP state in-charge Radha Mohan Singh and other senior party leaders were also present on the occasion. On the second day of his two-day visit to pollbound Uttar Pradesh, Nadda also inaugurated the BJP’s regional office here and seven other district offices. “I always say that the wanderer should not stop and always keep walking. Our goal is to strengthen the party,” he told party workers.

from Ghanawat and Gulati, the third member is P.K. Joshi - in January this year while staying the three farm laws. The Committee had submitted the report in March after a wide multistakeholder consultation. However, since then neither did the apex court make use of any of its recommendations nor was the report made public. Ghanawat had, in September, written to the then Chief Justice of India, to release the report so that its recommendations can be used by the government for resolving the agitation of the farmers that had turned widespread with even violence disturbing at some places. This is Ghanwat’s second letter after his first in September to the apex court.

“brute majority’’ in Parliament and then “shoved down the throat of farmers”. They have been withdrawn now but more needs to be done as there has been a “kind of breakdown of trust” between the government and the farmers which is “damaging” for future dispensations also, the Congress leader said. “They (farmers) will always view the government with suspicion. We owe our farmers who feed this country a lot more,” he asserted. Asked about the farmers’ demand for a law guaranteeing MSP, Pilot said the mere announcement of MSP even if it is made into law will not be adequate as there is also a need to make some regulation or laws for procurement. “What happens today is that you announce the MSP but there is no guarantee of procurement. If you want to really benefit the farmers then you have to ensure adequate and appropriate procurement, that is the key,” he said. If the farmers are demanding a law and regulation for MSP, it is a genuine demand and the government should act to fulfil it, he said.

Explaining that he and his team never wanted to pitch farmers against farmers and therefore never took to streets till date, Ghanwat said, however, now that the PM has announced to repeal the laws, we will take to the streets if needed. “But we don’t want to disturb Delhi. We will bring at least a lakh genuinely worried farmers, who support reforms in agriculture,” Ghanwat said. Commenting on the Samyukt Kisan Morcha’s demand to legalise Minimum Support Price (MSP) along with cancelling the three laws, Ghanwat said, “MSP is not the answer, it can never be. Farmers need to diversify. Look at progressive farmers in Maharashtra - farmers are doing dairy, fisheries, poultry and orchards.” Technology freedom and trade freedom should help the farmers as against the current practices of price regulation by the government by way of import or export ban, he said. Sanjeev Sabhlok, an advisor, said, “We need an Agriculture Policy, we need a white paper on the issue with wider consultation.”
NEW DELHI, NOV 23 (PTI): The BJP’s bypoll losses and a “looming bad performance” in the upcoming assembly polls led to the announcement of repealing the farm laws, Congress leader Sachin Pilot said on Tuesday, asserting that there will be “consequences” for the ruling party in the elections as farmers’ “distrust” of the government will not go away with one rollback. The former Rajasthan deputy chief minister said the government should not only ensure a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) as demanded by farmers but must also provide a regulation or a law ensuring that procurement takes place. In an interview with PTI, Pilot said no matter what the government does now, it is “far too late” to erase from the farmers’ minds the suffering caused during the farm laws agitation. “In Indian history, such a long agitation by the farming community which lasted for a year, has not been seen. If they had to rollback (the laws) then what was the need to waste lives and livelihoods, so much damage was

NEW DELHI, NOV 23 (IANS): Member of the Supreme Court appointed committee on farm laws, Anil Ghanwat, on Tuesday wrote to the apex court to release their committee’s report and also said he will mobilise a lakh farmers, who support farm reforms, to Delhi. Ghanwat’s Committee has submitted a report in connection with the three contentious farm laws, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced to repeal on November 19. The Shetkari Sanghatana leader from Maharashtra reached Delhi on Monday and held a meeting with another member of the panel, agriculture economist, Ashok Gulati. Ghanwat told media, “I have written a letter to the Supreme Court again today demanding it to release our report. Now that the three laws are going to be repealed, this report can play an educational role.” Whether or not the Committee will bring out that report in public by itself will be decided later, he said. The Supreme Court had appointed the threemember committee - apart
KANPUR (UP), NOV 23 (PTI): BJP president J P Nadda on Tuesday paid obeisance at the Namdev gurdwara here and asserted that no other leader has done the kind of work that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done for the Sikh community. He also credited Modi with ensuring that copies of Sikh scripture Guru Granth Sahib reached India from Afghanistan. For ty-four Afghan Sikhs carrying three copies of the Guru Granth Sahib reached India on a special flight on August 24 after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan earlier that month. Addressing people at the gurdwara, Nadda said, “Being a soldier of the BJP, I bow my head at the feet of Guru Namdev ji and say with pride that no one else has done the work that our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done for the Sikh community and the Sikh brothers.” “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done a lot of work for the Sikh community and has fulfilled their old demands. The prime minister has sent those involved in the 1984 riots to jail, no matter how influential they were,” he said.

As a result of this, the people feel they may be small but they can also access some kind of help from the government and credit from the banks, the minister added. Seeking the cooperation of the people in facilitating outsiders to set up their units in Jammu and Kashmir, she said a lot of people want to come and set up industry here and take benefit from the industrial package of the government. “I will invite more youth to come forward to set up their businesses in J&K. in eastern Sri Lanka
ISLAMABAD, NOV 23 (PTI): Pakistan on Tuesday rejected as “baseless” the Indian stand that a Pakistani F-16 aircraft was shot down by an Indian pilot during an aerial combat in February 2019. Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman (now Group Captain) shot down the Pakistani F-16 jet during an aerial combat before his MiG 21 Bison aircraft was hit on February 27, 2019. He was captured by the Pakistani Army and later released on the night of March 1. He was conferred with the Vir Chakra award by President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday for displaying an “exceptional sense of duty” in the dogfight. Vir Chakra is India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award after Param Vir Chakra and Maha Vir Chakra. “Pakistan categorically rejects the entirely baseless Indian claims that a Pakistani F-16 aircraft
COLOMBO, NOV 23 (PTI): A ferry with 20 people on board capsized in eastern Sri Lanka on Tuesday, killing at least six people, including children, police said. Eleven people sustained injuries after the ferry capsized near Kurinchankerny bridge in Kinniya in Trincomalee district and were admitted to a hospital, the police was quoted as saying by the Colombo Gazette. Hospital sources said that some of those receiving treatment were in critical condition. Sri Lanka Navy has rescued people from the ferry that capsized in the district. Among the rescued were three school children, the Navy was quoted as saying by the Colombo Page. The Navy said it has commenced a dedicated rescue mission to locate the missing persons deploying rescue teams representing Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS), Special Boat Squadron (SBS), Marines and Divers and operations are underway to search missing persons, it said. About 20 people were on board at the time of the accident.

The pilot’s release “was a testimony of Pakistan’s desire for peace despite India’s hostility and ill-conceived aggressive action,” it added. In the early hours of February 26, 2019, the IAF jets bombed the Jaish-eMohammad (JeM) terror camps in Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of Pakistan and avenged the Pulwama terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel. An intense aerial confrontation ensued between both countries the next day, in which the Indian pilot was captured and later released by Pakistan.

SOFIA, NOV 23 (AP): A bus carrying tourists back to North Macedonia crashed and caught fire in western Bulgaria early Tuesday, killing at least 45 people, including a dozen children, authorities said. The bus apparently ripped through a guardrail on a highway, though authorities have said the cause is still under investigation. Photos taken shortly after the crash showed the vehicle engulfed in flames as plumes of thick, black smoke rose. Daylight revealed a burned-out shell with all of its windows blown out, sitting in the median. A portion of the guardrail was peeled away and lying in the road. Seven people were taken to hospitals for treatment after the crash, which happened as a group of buses was returning from a trip to Turkey. Bulgarian Interior Minister Boyko Rashkov told reporters at the crash site that he had “never in my life seen something more horrifying.” “The picture is horrifying, the people who were on the bus are turned to charcoal,” Rashkov said. “It is impossible to

The country’s prime minister, Zoran Zaev, traveled to Bulgaria as well, visiting survivors in the hospital. He told Bulgarian television channel bTV that one said he was awoken by an explosion. His government observed a minute of silence Tuesday and declared three days of national mourning in the

Over the last several weeks as reports of this work became public, oil prices are down nearly 10 per cent,” it said. India will release 5 million barrels of crude oil from its emergency stockpile in tandem with the US, China, Japan, and other major economies to cool international oil prices, the government announced in New Delhi on Tuesday. This is the first time ever that India, which stores 5.33 million tonnes or about 38 million barrels of crude oil in underground caverns at three locations on the east and west coast, is releasing stocks for such purposes. Of this, about 5 million barrels will be released. “India strongly believes that the pricing of liquid hydrocarbons should be reasonable, responsible and be determined by market forces,” a government statement said. “India has repeatedly expressed concern at the supply of oil being artificially adjusted below demand levels by oil-producing countries, leading to rising prices and negative attendant consequences.”

BEIJING, NOV 23 (AP): China on Tuesday protested the passage of a U.S. Navy destroyer through the Taiwan Strait, calling it a deliberate move to undermine stability in the region. The U.S. Navy said in a statement the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Milius “conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit” on Tuesday “in accordance with international law.” It said the ship’s transit through the strait “demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.” “The United States military flies, sails, and operates anywhere international law allows,” said the statement posted on the website of the 7th Fleet. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said U.S. warships have been “flexing muscle and stirring up trouble in the Taiwan Strait repeatedly in the name of freedom of navigation.” “This is not a commitment to freedom and
openness, but a deliberate attempt to disrupt and undermine regional peace and stability,” Zhao told reporters at a daily news briefing. U.S. Navy ships routinely transit the Taiwan Strait, which lies in international waters and is a main conduit between the South China Sea and northern waters used by China, Japan, South Korea and others. Beijing’s protest follows Taiwan’s introduction of upgraded F-16V fighter jets into its air force to help counter the threat from the increasing number of incursions by Chinese warplanes into the airspace around the island. China claims the selfruling island of Taiwan as its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary. The U.S. has only unofficial relations with Taiwan, but provides the island with defensive weapons and is legally bound to regard threats to the island as matters of “grave concern.”

so that “we can prevent those threats before they fall on us” is critical to better counter the threats such as those posed by improvised explosive devices. “How to better protect our camps against attacks, which also implies the use of technologies… medical support. So all these areas are absolutely critical to be better at countering those threats that are absolutely growing and they will continue to grow,” he said. The UN is gearing for a crucial Peacekeeping Ministerial that will be hosted by South Korea on December 7-8.
the ministerial would be “pledges” from Member States because “we need capacities and we expect our Member States to provide us with those capacities.” He outlined the need to make more efforts to ensure better protection for peacekeepers, which he stressed is “closely interlinked with our capacities to better protect the civilians.” Further, technology expertise against mine and improvised explosive devices is also very important. “We need to have more mobility and to be more reactive and hence, the importance of helicopters or other means to improve our mobility and quick reaction forces,” he said. Lacroix also stressed the need to improve medical support, noting that while lot of efforts have already been made, “we need to do more.” He also highlighted the importance of more women in UN peacekeeping, saying “we consider that more women peacekeeping means more effective peacekeeping. We’ve made a lot of progress, but we need to do more.”

Lacroix termed it as a “very important meeting”, the first such high-level meeting on peacekeeping since the pre-COVID-19 time. “The first thing that we would expect from that meeting is a reaffirmation of our member states’ support to peacekeeping at a political level. That is crucially important and it is all the more important as our peacekeeping missions are facing many challenges,” he said, adding that UN peacekeepers are making a “big difference” every day in terms of prevention and protection of civilians. “But it is clear that they’re facing a number of very daunting challenges. And I think in addition to this very important political support, what we would also expect is an expression of support to the efforts that we’re currently making… with our member states to improve the impact and effectiveness of peacekeeping,” he said. While the number of fatalities as a result of those attacks has been on a downward trend since 2017, he reiterated that one peacekeeper killed is one too many. he US space agency is all set to launch its Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft, intended to deliberately crash into an asteroid, on Wednesday. This DART mission is targeted to launch at 1:21 a.m. EST (11:51 am India time) on November 24, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg S p a c e Fo r c e B a s e i n California, NASA said in a statement. The DART spacecraft is designed to impact an asteroid as a test of technology to see if it can change the motion of an asteroid in space. The mission aims to see if intentionally crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid is an effective way to change its course, if an Earth-threatening asteroid is discovered in the future. The spacecraft target is the binary near-Earth asteroid Didymos and its
moonlet, which pose no threat to Earth. “ DA RT w i l l b e humanity’s first test for planetary defence -- to see if we could change the course of an asteroid should we ever discover one headed toward Earth,” said Thomas Z u r b u c h e n , N A S A’ s associate administrator for the science mission directorate, in a blogpost. DART is currently scheduled to reach the Didymos binary asteroid system between September 26 and October 1, next year. When it reaches Didymos, it will need to differentiate between its impact target Dimorphos and the larger parent asteroid that Dimorphos orbits, Didymos - all the while millions of miles away from Earth, Zurbuchen said. It will do this with the help of its single instrument, the Didymos Reconnaissance and Asteroid Camera for
O p t i c a l n av i g a t i o n (DRACO) camera and a sophisticated suite of algorithms called SMART Nav. Once DART identifies and locks onto Dimorphos, it will kinetically impact the asteroid moonlet at a speed of 15,000 miles per hour -- for reference, this means DART will cover its last four miles in one single second -- which will change the amount of time it takes Dimorphos to orbit Didymos. This change in time will be measured through an international observation campaign and will be key to proving that asteroid deflection though kinetic impact is possible. While “Didymos system is not a threat to Earth... we need to be prepared should we ever be threatened by one of these enormous bodies emerging from the void of space,” Zurbuchen said. (IANS)
dele’s ‘30’ was the top selling album in the US after three days. The ‘Easy On Me’ singer, 33, has broken the record held by Taylor Swift’s ‘evermore’ - which sold 462,000 copies in the first week - by selling more than 500,000 copies of her new LP in the first few days of release. According to Billboard, stats from MRC Data revealed the new album - which contains songs such as ‘I Drink Wine’ and ‘My Little Love’ - takes the title of this year’s biggest individual week of sales, beating the record set by Taylor’s re-released version of ‘Red’, ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’, which dropped on 12 November and sold 396,000 copies by the week ending November 18. When taking into account streaming figures, the total volume of Adele’s new album sold has hit more than 575,000 copies, according to the first drop of numbers, and the figure will be confirmed on Thursday (25.11.21). It is expected to hit number one on the Billboard chart - when it is announced on December 4 - and would therefore become the hitmaker’s third album to do so Stateside, after 2015’s ‘25’ and 2011’s ‘21’. Adele’s promotion of her album has led her to do two television specials - one on CBS, which featured a performance and a heartfelt interview with Oprah Winfrey, airing on November 14 in the US, and another on ITV in the UK, with the star answering questions from the star-studded crowd. The latter, titled ‘An Audience with Adele’, featured a host of famous faces in the audience, such as her good pal and comedian Alan Carr. (Contactmusic)

46th Hovishe memorial football & 5th FIFA wraps up inspection of 2026 WC venues Henito Chishi volleyball trophies underway
TO RO N TO, N OV 2 3 ( AG E N C I E S ) : F I FA , world soccer’s governing body, wrapped up site visits to potential venues for the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico with a stop in Toronto on Monday, saying a decision on cities can be expected in April. After inspection tours of 22 cities and 23 venues a FIFA delegation will now submit a report from which 16 hosts will be chosen although FIFA’s chief tournaments and events officer Colin Smith suggested that number was not written in stone. “When the bid was presented 16 was referenced and we’ve taken note but ultimately it is up to FIFA,” said Smith, following a lunch-time media conference on the top floor of a downtown Toronto hotel overlooking Canada’s national stadium BMO Field. “We’ll wrap up these visits and then we will decide the most appropriate

number we need to host the tournament. “We haven’t set the exact time (of the venue announcement) yet but I suspect it will be more likely April than March. Toronto and Edmonton are the two Canadian cities bidding for games while Guadalajara, Mon-
terrey and Mexico City are the Mexico candidates. With the 2026 World Cup expanding to a record 48 teams, the joint bid calls for Canada and Mexico to each get 10 games with the rest going to the United States. Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Dal-
las, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York/New Jersey, Orlando, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay area, Seattle and Washington, D.C. are potential U.S. venues. The FIFA delegation looked at everything from infrastructure to legacy
projects to stadiums and practice facilities. “Overall we have been absolutely delighted with the quality of the presentations,” said Smith. “It has been a very competitive process, one that is going to make our decision all the more harder.” Vancouver, venue for the 2015 Women’s World Cup final, has expressed late interest in getting in on the World Cup action but Victor Montagliani, the CONCACAF president and FIFA vice-president, on Monday threw cold water on the suggestion. “I know that the premier of British Columbia (John Horgan) had expressed some interest and that’s great,” said Montagliani, who was joined at the head table by Smith, Toronto Mayor John Tory and Lisa MacLeod, Ontario’s Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture. “But right now we’re dealing with the players we have, not the players that are not on the team.”

BAMBOLIM, NOV 23 (PTI): Chennaiyin FC pulled off a hard fought 1-0 win over Hyderabad FC in their opening match of the Indian Super League here on Tuesday. Vlag yimir Koman (66th minute) scored from the spot to give Chennaiyin a crucial lead, eventually sealing all three points as Hyderabad were left to rue
their wastefulness in front of goal, especially in the first half. Hyderabad, whose average age of the Indian players in the lineup was just 24, was dealt a major blow early on with Halicharan Narzary limping off in under 10 minutes. That did not deter their resolve to stamp their impression as former ATK

NEW DELHI, NOV 23 (IANS): Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen fought hard before going down to top seed Kento Momota of Japan, while Parupalli Kashyap suffered a disappointing 11-21, 14-21 defeat against Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew in the opening round of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 event in Bali on Tuesday. Kashayp was struggling in the entire game and stumbled to a straightgame loss. However, Sen tried hard to overcome the world’s number one challenges, eventually failed, and
Sindhu to contest BWF Athletes’ Comm polls again
KUALA LUMPUR, NOV 23 (IANS): Two-time Olympic Games medallist and Indian badminton player PV Sindhu will stand for reelection in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Athletes’ Commission polls in Huelva, Spain on December 17. “World champion and 2-time Olympic medallist Pusarla V. Sindhu is the only current Athletes’ Commission member standing for re-election. 9 candidates have been nominated for the available 6 positions,” BWF said. Sindhu has not been in her best form of late and had crashed out of the Indonesia Masters last week in the semifinal, losing to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in a one-sided match. Women’s doubles specialist and gold medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, Greysia Polii of Indonesia, is also contesting the elections. “I would like to assist my fellow players to achieve their dreams and help them out with their requests around competing on the international circuit,” said Polii after her nomination.
lost the match. Sen took four points on the trot to regain the lead in the second game when the score was 8-5. But Momota came back with a flurry of points and managed to win the match, 23-21, 21-15, at last. The Badminton Federation of India later applauded the efforts of Sen on Twitter, “@lakshya_sen put up a brave fight to make top seed, WR- 1 Japanese Kento Momota work hard for each point before going down 21-23, 15-21 in the R32 at #IndonesiaOpen2021.
Mohun Bagan man Edu Garcia’s shot was cleared away in a hurry but Bartholomew Ogbeche could not follow through. Chennaiyin had goalkeeper Vishal Kaith to thank for keeping the former champions in the g a m e. T h e H i m a c h a l Pradesh-born was tested a few times but he emerged unscathed.
Hyderabad were in fact wasteful in the opportunities the brittle Chennaiyin defence gave them. Ogbeche missed more than handy chances but substitute Nikhil Poojary’s work-rate near the box only gained him new admirers. Kyrgyz playmaker Mirlan Murzaev almost gave Chennaiyin a glimmer of hope late in the first half,
but his header went offtarget from a darting cross in by Reagan Singh. Chennaiyin carried over the momentum post the break. Mirlan Murzaev and Lallianzuala Chhangte proved hard to contain. Chhangte arguably had the best chance of the night when he beat Akash Mishra on the run, cut in and shot hard, only to be tipped off by Kaith. New captain Anirudh Thapa then made it count for his side winning a penalty as he was brought down by Hitesh Sharma inside the box. Former AS Monaco man Vlagyimir Koman stepped up to deliver a powerful piledriver that gave goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani no chance, breaking the deadlock with little over 20 minutes to play. Chennaiyin led against the run of play, leaving Manolo Marquez to make four changes at a go. Joel Chianese, Javi Siverio, Sahil Tavora and young striker Rohit Danu were introduced in the 77th minute. However, there wasn’t to be another goal in the game. WEDNESDAY’S MATCH Odisha Fc Vs Bengaluru FC Time: 7:30 pm

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Dean Wade (32) defends Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant (7) in the second quarter at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
CLEVELAND, NOV 23 (AGENCIES): Kevin Durant scored 27 points, including the go-ahead basket late in the fourth quarter, as the visiting Brooklyn Nets rallied for a 117-112 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night. Durant returned from sitting out Friday’s twopoint win over the visiting Orlando Magic on Friday due to a minor right shoulder sprain and struggled at times on a night when the
Nets overcame a 12-point deficit. Durant also collected nine assists and six rebounds. Reserve LaMarcus Aldridge added 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Brooklyn. James Harden totaled 14 and a season-high 14 assists. Darius Garland scored 24 points and handed out 11 assists as Cleveland dropped its fourth straight. place in Champions League last-16
Xavi Hernandez
M A D R I D, N O V 2 3 (IANS): FC Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez insisted that “every game” the club plays is vital as he prepares for the Champions League clash at home to Benfica late on Tuesday, which will have a huge influence on the rest of Barca’s season. A win for Barca against the Portuguese side, who beat them 3-0 earlier in the season, will book their place in the knockout stage of the competition, but a defeat or a draw would leave them
with one foot out of the competition and having to settle for a place in the much less lucrative Europa League in the New Year. “Every game is vital, but this is Barca and we have to compete every three days,” said Xavi, who insisted he saw the game “as an opportunity. It is a golden opportunity to qualify for the last-16 and to get revenge and to say that ‘we are Barca’.” “We are playing at home and I like the challenge,” said the coach in
his pre-game press conference, Xinhua reports. Xavi has important selection problems, as Pedri, Martin Braithwaite, Sergio Kun Aguero and Ousmane Dembele, who all missed 1-0 win over Espanyol on November 20 are still unable to start, while the young wingers, Ilias and Abde, who played at the weekend, were not included in Barca’s squad for the Champions League. “We’ll have to see how (Sergino) Dest is, see how Ousmane and Sergi Roberto are,” said Xavi. “ We a r e w i t h o u t any pure wingers, maybe Coutinho can play or (Yusuf) Demir, so we’ll go out with who we have,” commented the coach. “We’ll see if we are better than Benfica tomorrow; we were better than Espanyol and deserved to win by more goals, but you have to show that on the pitch. Barca aren’t at a moment where we can be overconfident, but we have to be optimistic and positive. We have to be brave and go out to attack to get the win we need to be in the last 16,” Xavi insisted.
