‘Won’t hesitate to cross borders...’: Rajnath talks tough to terrorists
Rio stresses on need for water conservation
Rajnath Singh (PTI)
GUWAHATI, APR 23 (PTI/AGENCIES): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday asserted that India would not hesitate to act against terrorists who target the country from across the border. Speaking at a programme, where Assambased veterans of 1971 India-Pakistan War were felicitated, Singh said the government was working to wipe out terrorism from the country. “India has been successful in giving out the message that terrorism will be strongly dealt with. We will not hesitate to cross borders if the country is targeted from outside,” he maintained. Singh also said that the eastern boundary of the country is currently experiencing more peace and stability compared to the western frontier. “The problem of infiltration has almost ended. There is peace and stability at the border (in the eastern frontier) now,” he said. On the recent withdrawal of AFSPA from different parts of northeast, Singh said the government did so whenever the situation in a place improved. Maintaining that there was a “public misconception” that the Army always wanted AFSPA to remain in force, Singh said “It is the situation that is responsible for imposition of AFSPA, not the Army.” He said AFSPA was lifted from 23 districts of Assam and 15 police stations of Nagaland and Manipur due to huge role played by chief minister North-eastern states.

DIMAPUR, APR 23 (NPN): Describing land and water as the “most valuable natural resources”, state chief minister Neiphiu Rio Saturday urged upon the people to adopt better practices in utilization of water, which caters to the needs of all. Rio said this during the inauguration of the Hydrology Project Convention Centre (HPCC) at EE Investigation call, 4th Mile, here besides commissioning of Automatic Weather Station (AWS) and Peizometer, constructed under National Hydrology Project (NHP). While stressing on water management, Rio said “mother Earth” provided human needs but not greed and that people should take care of the environment that helps sustain life of all living beings. Citing the example of states having water disputes with their neighbours during dry seasons, the chief minister opined that Nagaland could also face the same scenario if citizens fail to conserve water. He also expressed grave concern over shrinking and drying streams, rivers and traditional wells due to excessive usage of water.
Taking the example of Israel, which is renowned for skills in management of water, Rio urged upon the people to practise conservation of water. He said over 70% of the state population were engaged in agriculture and allied sectors. Rio expressed hope that the newly inaugurated HPCC would meet the needs of all. Rio also expressed hope that the facility would go a long way in helping the state improve management of water and its uses in farming and industrial sector, including domestic sector. He also acknowledged the department for putting up hard work and dedication. Meanwhile, advisor water resources, Namri Nchang, informed that HPCC was constructed under the NHP. He said that the ministry of water resources, river development and ganga rejuvenation was coordinating the implementation of NHP as a central sector scheme with World Bank assistance. Nchang said approval of the union cabinet for implementation of NHP was conveyed on June 23, 2016 for duration of eight years. He said that under the project, the department was able to establish hydrometeorological observation
networks and Real Time Data Acquisition Systems (RTDAS). “RTDAS consists of a telemetric network of automated rainfall stations, automated weather stations and water level recording stations along the major rivers,” Nchang stated. He said it was imperative to check the quality and constituents of water, be it for domestic, industrial or farming purposes. “I presume that with these initiatives, days are not far when the state of Nagaland will be at par with all the leading mainland states in the areas of water resources management,” he stated. Short speech was also delivered by chief engineer, WRD and nodal officer (NHP), Er Hotovi Ayemi, while welcome address and technical report delivered by executive engineer and project manager, HPCC (NHP), WRD, Er Keduvizo Sophie and vote of thanks proposed by superintending engineer and deputy nodal officer (NHP), WRD, Er Chubasashi Chang. Naga political solution in the court of stakeholders, says Rio Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, APR 23 (NPN): Nagaland chief Neiphiu Rio on Saturday said that the Government of India was serious to resolve the vexed Naga political issue. Talking to media persons on the sidelines of the inaugural of Hydrology Project Convention Centre (HPCC) and commissioning of Automatic Weather Station (AWS) and Peizometer, Rio said when he along with UDA chairman TR Zeliang and deputy CM Y. Patton had recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home minister Amit Shah in Delhi, both Modi and Shah were serious and eager to resolve the Naga issue. In this regard, he said
the Centre had sent Government of India’s representative for Naga talks AK Mishra to Nagaland in order to stay here for at least a week and to hold thorough discussion with all stakeholders till they find a meeting point to have a settlement. Rio said that the ball was now in the court of all stakeholders to push for early solution. “The ball is in the court of all the stakeholders. Public support is required whether we want peace or not, whether we want settlement or not and whether the issues that are making a road block… should find a way for coming together to find the solution,” Rio said. When asked whether the Core Committee on Naga Political Issue had
recently met Mishra, Rio said the members had been meeting him regularly and that Mishra has been given free hand to hold parleys with those engaged in negotiations with the Centre. On fuel adulteration: Meanwhile, when asked about the fuel adulteration racket busted by the Rising People’s Party and the latter accusing the government of turning blind eye to such issue, Rio said blaming it on the government for everything was unfair. He said the public should report on such matters so that the government could take necessary action, adding that the “government cannot watch everybody’s kitchen”. Rio, however, assured that the government will do what is possible.

Patton, who holds charge of Home and Road & Bridges department, was divested of R&B. Informing this in partial modification of the February 9, 2022 notification, cabinet secretary J. Y. Patton (NP File)
SCERT, has been relieved from both departments and assigned the department of Road and Bridges. Adviser School Education, KT Sukhalu has been given additional charge of SCERT. When contacted, deputy chief minister Y. Patton informed Nagaland Post that it was the prerogative of the chief minister to decide on
portfolio allocation and did not wish to comment on it. With reports doing the rounds that the change in portfolio allocation was in connection with the Rajya Sabha seat that was given to the BJP, Patton said the present development had nothing to do with it. Patton clarified that it was a commitment made by NDPP in 2018 to support a BJP Rajya Sabha candidate in return for support extended to the NDPP candidate for the Lok Sabha. This commitment was made in the presence of central BJP leaders, chief minister Neiphiu Rio and cabinet ministers in Del-
hi where NDPP had also agreed upon, Patton said. It was learnt that Patton was in Guwahati, the nerve centre of the BJP in the North East, to meet Assam chief minister and NEDA chairman Himanta Biswa Sarma and other BJP leaders. It was not known whether his trip to Guwahati was in connection with the recent development. Meanwhile, NDPP p r e s i d e n t C h i n g wa n g Konyak informed this Correspondent that the changes were made after due consultation with all concerned and leaders of the two parties including the State BJP president (Cont’d on p-8)

This is it! Fuel adulteration: UDA govt silence is admission of guilt: RPP Gov, CM, DyCM extend Tsukhenye greetings DIMAPUR, APR 23 (NPN): Nagaland governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi has
“Don’t know whether the car broke down due to mechanical or petrochemical problem.” K Y M C
DIMAPUR, APR 23 (NPN): Rising People’s Party (RPP) has hit out at the UDA government for its “deafening silence” on the multi crore fuel adulteration scam, alleging that it was “nothing but an admission that the Food and Civil Supplies department is directly involved in the racketeering through diversion of Kerosene to the fuel racketeers.” While asking the government and the advisor for Food and Civil Supplies “to show some guts and stop running scared on the issue”, RPP demanded to know as to how
many litres of kerosene the State of Nagaland receives each month? and how many agencies across Nagaland are allotted the same? While pointing out that the name of the accused (the same person involved in the previous adulteration case) was clearly mentioned in the video by those at the adulteration site, RPP said that the authorities man-hunting for some Ashok was akin to ignoring the elephant in the room. Reacts to IOCL clarification: Further, RPP said it was also surprised to note the clari-
fication made by the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) deputy general manager Huwuto Sema that their tankers were at the adulteration site for repairing works on the night of April 21. RPP said there was no question of the trucks being there for repairing as the video evidence clearly showed IOCL tankers being connected to the motor pumps used for fuel adulteration. “Very importantly, unless one is stupid, no fully loaded tanker drivers will enter workshops where gas or electric
works are carried out,” the party said. With regard to GPS live tracking being fitted into the oil tankers, RPP said that the IOCL depot in Dimapur was very much aware of fuel adulteration racket that was taking place in that particular area. The Rising People’s Party alleged that the active participation of the local IOCL in the racket could not be ruled out. It my be recalled that the RPP on Thursday exposed a fuel adulteration racket that was being run at Gorapatti ward No 2 area in Dimapur.

Sarma also recalled how the armed personnel had provided logistical assistance to the members of Mukti Bahini (liberation army) of Bangladesh. Speaking at a programme, where 1971 war veterans from the state were felicitated, he said, “The role of Assam in the IndoPak war was not confined to the battlefield alone. Many police officials of the state had trained the Mukti Bahini members, besides serving through various other means.” Recounting the events that had unfolded during the war, which led to the birth of Bangladesh, Sarma said civil societies of the state had given shelter to refugees
from then East Pakistan. “Civil societies, especially those from the Barak Valley of the state, had provided shelter to the refugees and logistical support to the freedom fighters. “Besides help and cooperation from the government, what the people of Assam did (for East Pakistan refugees) was also phenomenal,” he maintained. Sarma said the 1971 War left an indelible mark on Assam’s history. “The sacrifices made by people, especially the soldiers from the state, continue to inspire generations. We are bound by responsibility to stand by our bravehearts and their families,” the CM added as the armed forces personnel who had participated in the 1971 War were felicitated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. NEW DELHI, APRIL 23 (IANS): Even when the entire northeast India has been experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall for the last few days, the spatial variability due to various reasons has meant that Meghalaya has received ‘large excess’ rainfall while Tripura has received ‘deficient’ and Mizoram ‘large deficient’ rainfall since March 1 till Saturday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) data has shown that for the period between March 1 and April 23, the quantum of rainfall received by Meghalaya is 473.8 mm, which is 99 per cent more than the normal rainfall 237.5 mm for this duration; Tripura received 98.8 mm rainfall, minus 58 per cent of 234.1 mm normal for the duration and Mizoram received 64.4 mm rainfall, minus 66 per cent of 187.3 mm normal for the duration. In IMD parlance, 60 per cent or more rainfall is termed as large excess; 20 per cent to 59 per cent is excess; rainfall that is be-
tween minus 19 per cent to plus 19 per cent is normal; minus 20 per cent to minus 59 per cent is deficient while minus 60 till minus 99 is termed as large deficient. Other states in the northeast received normal or excess rainfall. For the same duration of March 1-April 23, Manipur received 150.4 mm (against the normal of 149.4 mm); Nagaland received 137.8 (against the normal of 148.6 mm) and Arunachal Pradesh received 420.9 mm (against 403.5 mm normal) while two states, Sikkim with 417.4 mm against 276.0 mm normal (51 per cent more) and Assam with 321.1 mm against 202.3 mm normal (59 per cent more) received excess rainfall. Explaining the phenomenon, senior scientist from IMD, K.S. Hosalikar, said the orography of the region and wind direction played a major role. “The windward orography of Meghalaya and the hilly terrain further north is a major factor. Plus, this time round, the wind direction
is from southwest to northeast direction. Therefore, there was more rain in the northern part of the NE region while Tripura and Mizoram in the southern parts remained dry.” Hosalikar also pointed out the lack of favourable low pressure system in the northern Bay of Bengal in this season for the missing heavy rainfall over Tripura and Mizoram. Incidentally, Mizoram has recovered lost ground this week and showed normal rainfall while Tripura went from deficient to large deficient. For the duration between April 14-20, Tripura received 20.4 mm rainfall against the normal of 55.3 mm normal (minus 63 per cent) while Mizoram received 29.5 mm rainfall against the normal of 31.5 mm (minus six per cent). The IMD has further predicted widespread rainfall and thunderstorms over the region for next few days under the influence of strong southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal to northeastern states at lower tropospheric levels.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, APRIL 24, 2022
The govt cited specific instances of ‘hyberbolic’ statements by news anchors and ‘scandalous headlines and taglines’.
The government expresses serious concern about the manner in which television channels have gone about their operations in the manner of transmitting content, read the advisory issued by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. It strongly advised the channels to immediately refrain from publishing and transmitting any content which is violative of the provisions of the Cable Television Networks (Reg-
ulation) Act 1995 and the rules thereunder. Section 6 of the Programme Code under the Act states that “no programme should be carried in the cable service which offends against good taste or decency; contains criticism of friendly countries; contains attack on religions or communities or visuals or words contemptuous of religious groups or which promote communal attitudes; contains anything, obscene, defamatory, de-

It also observed that many journalists and news anchors of these channels made “fabricated and hyperbolic” statements intending to incite the audience. The advisory also cited instances of use of taglines or headlines such as ‘Parmanu Putin se pareshan Zelenski (Zelenski worried about nuclear Putin), ‘Parmanu action ki chinta se Zelenski ko depression’ (Zelenski goes into depression over nuclear action), and making of “unverified claims misquoting” international agencies that the third world war has already started.
MUMBAI, APR 23 (PTI): NCP president Sharad Pawar on Saturday said Union Home Minister Amit Shah could not protect Delhi from communal riots. Speaking at a rally of the Nationalist Congress Party at Kolhapur in western Maharashtra, Pawar referred to violence that broke out in Jahangirpuri area of Delhi during Hanuman Jayanti processions. “Few days back, Delhi was burning due to communal tensions. The state of Delhi is controlled by (chief minister) Arvind Kejriwal, but its police comes under the Union Home Ministry handled by Amit Shah. Shah failed to protect the city from communal riots,” he said. “If anything happens in Delhi, the message goes out to the world. The world would imagine that there is unrest in Delhi. You have power, but you can not handle Delhi,” Pawar further said. He also targeted the BJP government in Karnataka over riots in Hooghly.

JAGDISHPUR (BIHAR), APR 23 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a target of making India number one in the world by 2047, when the nation celebrates the centenary of its Independence. Shah was here to attend a function held in the memory of Revolt of 1857 hero Veer Kunwar Singh, which was marked by more than 77,000 BJP workers waving the tricolour, together, for five minutes. The feat went down in the annals of history as
the previous record, set in Lahore, Pakistan, where about 56,000 people had waved their national flags, got shattered. Shah delivered an unusually short speech wherein he touched upon the Modi government’s efforts during the coronavirus pandemic, including the vaccination drive and free monthly ration to the poor. He also spoke about the role of RSS ideologue V D Savarkar in highlighting the Revolt of 1857, which the latter had called “India’s first war of Independence” in an eponymous book.
LU C K N OW, A P R 2 3 (PTI): The Uttar Pradesh government is thinking seriously in the direction of the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the state, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said on Saturday. Maurya made the revelation while favouring the expeditious implementation of the UCC both in the country and the state. Terming the constitutionally-envisaged measure an “important step” for the realisation of the governance ‘mantra’ of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” (inclusive growth), he said it should be welcomed by everybody. “One law for all in one country is the need of the hour. It is required that we should get out of the system of one law for one person and another for others. We are in favour of a common civil code,” Maurya said while talking to newspersons here. “The Uttar Pradesh government is thinking in this direction seriously,” the deputy CM said.

BJP high command to decide on cabinet expansion: Karnataka CM
Basavaraj Bommai
DAVANGERE (KTK), APR 23 (PTI): Amid speculations over whether it will be cabinet expansion or rejig in Karnataka, ahead of assembly polls next year, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday maintained that he would get to know about it only after discussing with the BJP high command. He had recently said that BJP national Presi-
dent J P Nadda will hold a special meeting on Karnataka in New Delhi, and thereafter Bommai will be called to the national capital to decide on the cabinet exercise. “I will get to know about it only after discussion with the party high command,” Bommai told reporters in response to a question whether it will be cabinet expansion or reshuffle this time. Asked whether new faces will be given a chance in the cabinet, he said it will be known when the announcement is made. There is pressure mounting on the CM to expand or rejig his cabinet soon, after the Assembly elections in five states recently.

Presiding over the 75th state level Himachal Day function at Chowgan in Chamba recently, Thakur had also announced a 50 per cent relaxation in fare in HRTC buses for women and no water bill in rural areas, in addition to free power to all up to 125 units. ED lodges PMLA case against Jahangirpuri violence prime accused
NEW DELHI, APRIL 23 (IANS): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday initiated a money laundering probe against Jahangirpuri violence prime accused Mohammed Ansar Sheikh. On Friday, Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana had written to ED director to probe Ansar under Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The Delhi Police claimed that Ansar has acquired huge wealth through illgotten means and that all the real estates he owns is
nothing but the proceeds of crime. The probe agency has lodged an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), which is like an FIR against Ansar. Sources said that the case has been filed on the request of the Delhi police. A team of elite officials of the ED is likely to approach the Rohini court seeking his custodial remand. The Delhi Police has already given the FIRs lodged against Ansar and others to the ED along with several other incriminating documents.

OPINION/EDITORIAL
Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 137 DIMAPUR, SUNDAY, APRIL 24, 2022
Mediation on superannuation
G
overnment doctors under the banner of Nagaland In-service Doctors Association (NIDA) have resolved to resign en masse on receipt of the list of all government medical doctors by April 25. The reason behind the NIDA’s demand is a 2016 statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the retirement age of doctors under central government would be enhanced to 65 years considering their shortage. Just months after Modi’s statement, NIDA had submitted a memorandum to the state government to raise the retirement age. The government reciprocated by forming a cabinet sub-committee to look into the issue but thereafter, it did not take any steps. So, on October 27, 2020, the association had submitted another memorandum demanding that the retirement age be raised to 62 years for administrative posts and 65 years for clinical posts. However, NIDA subsequently trimmed it down to 62 years in 2022 and which remained as the main demand. According to NIDA the government had given a written assurance of responding to the demand within a period not extending beyond one year on April 17, 2021. However, as the matter passed ten months, NIDA decided to activate itself in order to have the government take a decision before April 17, 2022. It announced a three-day mass casual leave from April 18. Fearing a crisis in the public health services during the first wave of the pandemic when the NIDA was planning to launch an agitation, the state government had made a written commitment to resolve the matter within a year (April 2022). Since the Disaster Management Act, 2005, is still in force and the health services are an essential service under the Nagaland Essential Services (Maintenance Act, 1978) the government warned that such disruptive action will be deemed illegal. Despite this, NIDA went ahead with its threeday mass casual leave. To counter the move, the government formed a state level control room at Kohima headed by the principal director DHFW and district level control centres headed by MS. However the agitation was suspended after the government assured that the cabinet would take up the issue on April 21. However, NIDA resolved to take the step after the cabinet at its meeting on April 21, 2022 did not raise the superannuation but decided to provide a leeway but on the basis of automatic reemployment till 62 years on superannuation at 60. The demand by NIDA can be discussed on merit but what comes out prominently is that the state government was taking its own time to decided. If NIDA had made clear about its intention when it submitted its representation to the government even in 2020? After reminding the government of their demand, the government acknowledged it and in April 17, 2021 assured that the sub-committee form would come up with its report within one year, before April 17, 2022. Now the issue has gone beyond what could have been averted. One thing is clear, if a sizeable number of around 300 plus doctors resign en masse, it would disrupt the entire health service in government hospitals Nagaland. Probably patients in a few urban towns may not be badly affected as those who depend wholly on health care provided through government hospitals. It is only hoped that the government and NIDA will resolve the stalemate through a give-and-take agreement. To achieve this, it would require some well meaning organisation to play the role of mediator.

Post-mortem
Diversity, not majority is the strength of India M ark Twain rightly said; “India is the cradle of the human race, the birth place of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend and the great grandmother of tradition. Our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only.” In many aspects, India is one of the most diverse Nations in the World and one of them is the number of languages spoken in India. It is such diversity that makes India the quintessence of Democracy. Any non Hindi speaking citizens cannot be adjudged any lesser Indian than Hindi speaking citizens. We do not need a particular language to prove our nationality. In fact, it will place at a stark disadvantage for the non-Hindi speakers on the

ground that language has the feasible to divide as much as to unite. India is a Union of State having diverse linguistic Cultures and such linguistic diversity is the epitome of our cultural heritage. The Constitution of India under Article 343 has incorporated the official language of the Union to be English and Hindi. Article 345 provides for the State Legislature to adopt anyone or more language or languages or Hindi as the language or languages to be used for all or any of the official purpose of that State. Article 29 further protects the interest of minority by engraving the right of the citizens to conserve their distinct language, script or culture of its own. Article 30(1) also provides that all minorities, based on religion or language, shall have the right to establish
T
and administer educational institutions of their choice. This implies the right of a minority community to impart education or instruction to the children of its own community in the institution run by it and its own language and if such right is infringed, an institution run by the c o m mu n i t y m ay s e e k relief for violation of any fundamental right. It is also reiterated that as per Article 343, Hindi is not a National language, it is an official language. As such, One language, One religion or One dress code in no way signifies unity. India is a Democratic Republic Nation and so it should always strive for its unity with the ideology of democracy for all the religion and language and not otherwise. Although, Article 351 of the Constitution lays down
the duty upon the Union to promote the spread of Hindi language to develop it so that it may serve as a medium of expression for all the elements of the composite culture of India, it is also imperative to note that no expressive provision stating Hindi as the National language can be sourced. Only 22 official languages have been recognised in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India whereas India is home to more than thousand mother tongues. Therefore, any attempt to impose compulsor y Hindi all over India where the inclusiveness is represented by our vast cultural, customary and linguistic diversity is an imminent threat to the very fabric of existence. Be it Hindi, English or any other language, any
restriction in the choice of a particular language will give rise to fissiparous. To learn and acquire a particular language is the discretion of an individual and system of knowledge. Therefore, when someone has the necessity to learn a particular language, no force can deny him/her that right. As for instance, I am a proud Naga and I am proud to speak in my own language. Nobody can dictate me to speak Hindi, English or any other language. The rest is my necessity. W h i l e a c k n ow l e d g i n g the importance of Hindi language, it will be absurd and diminishing to impose Hindi on non-Hindi speaking citizens. Therefore, imposing Hindi for the purpose of integration requires utmost care and tact. Instead, it is encouraged that State
should constantly take the necessary steps to integrate and safeguard the language of the linguistic minorities into the education system as State is equally responsible to create equal opportunity for everyone regardless of Class, Caste, Creed, Colour, Religion and Language. Hence, “diversity and not majority is the strength of India”. Therefore, in the light of the above, Coercion or Compulsory to speak Hindi or any particular language in any manner is itself an invective to that language. C. SAYO on land dispute at Kezoltsa
o put the record in perspective, the issue of land dispute at Kezoltsa between Southern Angami with any neighboring village or tribe at Kezoltsa did not arise prior to the year 2000 until the destruction of JAPO rest house at Kezoltsa on 23-11-2000 by Songsong village under Mao Council (Then referred to as, Memai Council of Mao). Consequent upon the perpetration of destructing the JAPO rest house, it ultimately resulted in flaring up tension and dispute in the region and subsequently, the Tenyimia Central Union had to intervene. The Tenyimia Central Union after having examined the incident on the 14-02-2001, directed the Songsong Village through Memai Council of Mao to re-construct the JAPO rest house within 20 days period, w.e.f 15th February, 2001. We are God’s fellow workers… —1 Corinthians 3:9
Beware of any work for God that causes or allows you to avoid concentrating on Him. A great number of Christian workers worship their work. The only concern of Christian workers should be their concentration on God. This will mean that all the other boundaries of life, whether they are mental, moral, or spiritual limits, are completely free with the freedom God gives His child; that is, a worshiping child, not a wayward one. A worker who lacks this serious controlling emphasis of concentration on God is apt to become overly burdened by his work. He is a slave to his own limits, having no freedom of his body, mind, or spirit. Consequently, he becomes burned out and defeated. There is no freedom and no delight in life at all. His nerves, mind, and heart are so overwhelmed that God’s blessing cannot rest on him. But the opposite case is equally true– once our concentration is on God, all the limits of our life are free and under the control and mastery of God alone. There is no longer any responsibility on you for the work. The only responsibility you have is to stay in living constant touch with God, and to see that you allow nothing to hinder your cooperation with Him. The freedom that comes after sanctification is the freedom of a child, and the things that used to hold your life down are gone. But be careful to remember that you have been freed for only one thing– to be absolutely devoted to your co-Worker. We have no right to decide where we should be placed, or to have preconceived ideas as to what God is preparing us to do. God engineers everything; and wherever He places us, our one supreme goal should be to pour out our lives in wholehearted devotion to Him in that particular work. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might…” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, APRIL 24, 2022
per customary usages of our forefathers and on 3rd June, 2015 at Mozhuw Prayer Centre, Mao Gate in a meeting with the officials of Mao Council in the presence of United Naga Council (UNC) and Naga People’s organization (NPO), the Naga Hoho along with UNC and NPO made fervent appeal to Mao Council to withdraw its Memorandam. The Mao Council failed to respond positively to the appeal for withdrawing of the Memorandum. Hence, the Naga Hoho directed the Mao Council on two consecutive occasions, i.e, 5th and 10th June 2015 to immediately withdraw its Memorandum, in view of the fact that, the Naga Hoho was unable to move forward till the Memorandum was withdrawn but the Mao Council continued with its stand not to withdraw. Yet, the Naga Hoho in its attempt to further intervene into the impasse of the SAPO and Mao Council, convened a consultative meeting on the 1st July, 2015 at The Heritage, Kohima and resolved to direct the Mao Council to withdraw its Memorandum within five days. After the expiry of the five day period and the Mao Council having failed to withdraw the Memorandum, on the 6th July 2015, the Naga Hoho in its executive meeting unanimously resolved to suspend Mao Council as, it was fully convinced that, the Memorandum submitted by the Mao Council to the Government of Manipur was detrimental to
the wishes and aspiration of the Nagas and the very involvement of the communal Government for solving the issues among Nagas is uncalled for. The Kezoltsa issue which in nature being explicitly on basis of ancestral land ownership since time immemorial, on the 1612-17 the President of Southern Angami Public Organisation, the Chief of Maram Khullen Village and the President of Mao Council appended an Arbitration Undertaking in the presence of the President, TPO and Convenor, Board of Arbitrators (BOA) constituted by TPO while, fully concurring that, the land belong to the people and not to any State or Government and have agreed to resolve the dispute based on Naga Customary Laws and its usages (Tenyimi) and not to resort to approach any other Court(s). The signatories had committed to co-operate, abide and strictly implement the decision given by Board of Arbitrators (BOA) and also agreed not to destroy the forest (flora and fauna), collect forest produce, permit hunting and allow any road connectivity to the forest. To this effect, the existing road(s) shall also be cut-off. However, the Mao Council in contravention to the principles of the Arbitration Undertaking had defied the agreement; few instances are mentioned below: • The Mao Council had twice undertaken the construction of approach roads through PMGSY and Agri-link road
projects. • On 29th December, 2020 during the jungle inferno, the Manipur Government on the pretext of dosing the fire had undertaken forest clearing and constructed roads. • On the pretext and allegations of protecting its people and land, the Mao Council approached the Government of Manipur and subsequently, armed personnel were deployed, concrete buildings were constructed and 144 Cr.PC was promulgated through the District Magistrate, Senapati. • Under the patronage of Mao Council, Manipur Government has carried out massive development activities within the disputed area, which is under the custodian of the Hon’ble TPO Customary Court. The above cited instances of defying the standing Arbitration Agreement of the TPO had resulted in illegal activities by acts of aggression in the form of land encroachment, destruction of environment and exploitation of natural resources in large scale. Fr o m t h e t i m e o f o u r forefathers and till date, the Southern Angami and the Mao have shared common traditional land and its resources based on the Naga traditional values and customary practices. An instance can be of Okhro-Ikhro village, where the Manipur Government annually organizes its Cherry Blossom Festival without any objection from SAPO though, the particular location of the festival
falls within the Nagaland State Political Boundary. The Southern Angami in honouring the aged old Naga traditions and customs of land ownership have not oppose to any development works, setting up of Educational institutions and construction of settlements and buildings which were undertaken by the Mao. Since the inception of the dispute at Kezoltsa the Southern Angami has been rendered at the receiving end as a consequence of the continued unpleasant incidents and malicious activities, which were engineered to create disunity, manipulation of facts, arbitrary imposition of State sponsored forces and repeated attempts to stage fake claims over its land. However, the Southern Angami people in particular has unwaveringly stood to uphold the integrity and fraternity amongst all the Naga tribes and had firm conviction to maintain its age old relationship. Through this statement, the Southern Angami reiterates to render and continue all out efforts and co-operation to the Tenyimi Public Organization and Board of Arbitrators (BOA), TPO in an affirmative anticipation of a timely verdict. It is also however, imperative on the part of the stake holders and signatories of the Arbitration Agreement to commit sincerely to the undertaking so, as to enable in delivering a befitting conclusion to the issue. Khan unfortunately led to populist policies. An opposition party member of parliament Nafisa Shah accused Khan of having “destroyed political culture, weakened parliament, and institutions.” In a perceptive piece, journalist Marvi Sirmed warns that it would be foolish to conclude that democracy has prevailed in Pakistan and Imran Khan’s ouster is proof of that. She asserts that it is mostly the army’s doing and it will take quite some time for political parties to become truly independent of the army’s influence. The fact remains that unlike neighbouring India or also Bangladesh, Pakistan has suffered economic mismanagement and the high inflation is but one manifestation of that. Excessive dependence on debt, whether from the IMF or China is also a factor. Populism and fiscal recklessness have no happy ending. India’s 1991 crisis itself was the culmination of profligate fiscal policies tipped over by the Gulf War of 1990, high oil prices leading to a full-fledged currency crisis. Thankfully since then, despite many external macro shocks such as the East Asian crisis of newspaper nor that of the
1997, the dot com bust and 9/11, the Lehman crash, or presently the pandemic and Ukraine, India’s macro has been resilient and hence crises have been avoided. But that should be no reason for complacency. Some of the debt and deficit policies pursued by individual state gover nments are becoming unsustainable if not outright crisisprone. Punjab’s debt to state GDP ratio is already at 53 percent as against the 20 recommended by fiscal responsibility norms. The Centre’s debt to GDP ratio declined steadily from 63.9 per cent in 2006 to 47 per cent just before the pandemic i.e. in 2019. Since then it has risen steeply and is now at 61.7 per cent. Interest payments are 45 per cent of revenue receipts in 2021. Some states want to discard the national pension scheme in favour of fiscally irresponsible “defined benefits” schemes. Populism and large welfare spending are rising. We can’t ignore what happens to economic resilience when fiscal caution is thrown to the winds. Cong, Hardik praises Delhi’s R-value 2.1 this week: IIT-Madras AfterBJP,criticising but says he is not joining it BA.2 variant found in B’luru, experts warn of 4th wave
Mathematics, IIT-Madras, said it would be too early to declare an onset of another wave. “We can only say right now that every person is affecting two others.... but we need to wait a bit to declare onset...we don’t know about the immunity status and whether the people who got affected during the third wave in January are getting affected or not again,” he told PTI. For other metro cities -- Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, Jha said the number of cases are too low to ascertain a trend. Delhi is witnessing an uptick in the number of COVID-19 cases. The city logged 1,042 fresh Covid cases with a positivity rate
of 4.64 per cent on Friday. The Omicron sublineage BA.2.12 has been detected in a majority of the samples sequenced from Delhi in the first fortnight of April and it could be behind the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in the city, sources said on Thursday. However, an Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) source has claimed that Omicron variant derivative BA.2.12.1 has also been found in a few samples in Delhi which is said to be contributing to the recent rise in cases in the US. But officials have not confirmed that it indeed was found in some samples in Delhi.
‘Anti-drone tech needed to curb 2 teachers lock cross-border smuggling of drugs’ up girl students
Bhagwant Mann
MOHALI, APR 23 (PTI): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday underscored the need for developing indigenous anti-drone technology to effectively check the crossborder smuggling of drugs and weapons through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the first drone hub here at a private university, the chief minister said Punjab must be equipped with such ultra-modern technology as it is a border state, according to an official release. Anti-drone technology, Mann said, will help curb the cross-border smuggling of drugs and weapons through drones. Technology has transformed the world into a global village, he said, adding that new innovations and advancements must be
made for the well-being of humanity. Mann said unemployment is the root cause of all the social maladies, including the problem of drugs. He promised the Punjabi youths working abroad that his government will provide better job opportunities in the state and bring them back to their motherland. He said the Punjabi youths have huge potential but due to the “regressive policies” of previous governments, they have been forced to work abroad. Mann said his government will soon approach the industrial giants from across the globe for investment in the state so that new employment opportunities can be offered to the youth. Vowing to restore Punjab’s glory, he said the state has seen many ups and downs but it only emerged stronger every time. Punjabis gave a huge mandate to the Aam Aadmi Party and it will not sit idle until all the aspirations of people are fulfilled, he said. Mann said the state government is duty-bound to make Punjab a progressive, prosperous and frontrunner state in the country.

LAKHIMPUR KHERI (UP), APR 22 (PTI): Around 24 students of the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya at Behjam in Lakhimpur Kheri district were allegedly locked on the roof of the school by two teachers to pressure the district authorities into cancelling their transfer orders, officials said on Friday. The incident occurred on Thursday night. Officials and the local police managed to bring back the girls to their hostel after several hours. “The teachers resorted to such tactics to put pressure on the district authorities to cancel an order of transfer to other Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya on disciplinary grounds,” Laxmikant Pandey, the basic education officer of Lakhimpur Kheri, told PTI on Friday. Pandey and District Coordinator of Girl Education Renu Srivastav were informed about the incident by hostel warden Lalit Kumari. They rushed to the school and camped there for several hours. Women staffers of the local police were also called in and the matter was resolved, Pandey said.
Covid wave beginning in Karnataka in three to four weeks, and the BA.2 variant might be responsible for the surge. However, if a fourth wave hits the state, the number of people getting admitted to hospitals will be lesser than before though the infection will spread rapidly, Manjunath stated. “There are no restrictions in place in the state now and all activities have resumed just like in the pre-Covid period. This is going to result in a spike in Covid cases in another two weeks. People need to be cautious,” he warned. Those with comorbidities need to be cautious, while wearing masks should again be made mandatory, Manjunath said. He also advised people not to neglect symptoms of fever, cough and cold and get tested at the earliest. Earlier, Kar nataka Health Minister K. Sudhakar had said that some studies have shown that the fourth wave of Covid-19 may start in June-July and last till September, and the state is prepared to face it.
MUMBAI, APR 23 (PTI): Mumbai Police on Saturday evening arrested MLA Ravi Rana and his wife, MP Navneet Rana for allegedly “creating enmity between different groups” after escorting them out of their house in suburban Khar here amid high drama. T h e d e ve l o p m e n t came hours after the couple cancelled their plan to recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s private residence `Matoshree’ here. The Ranas were booked under IPC section 153 (A) (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to mainte-
nance of harmony), and section 135 of the Mumbai Police Act (violation of prohibitory orders of police), said an official of the Khar police station in western Mumbai. BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, speaking in Nagpur, said the Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government’s way of handling the entire episode was “very childish”. The state government tries to hide its failures by terming the situations it can’t handle as BJP-sponsored, the former chief minister said. “If allowed, the Rana couple would have gone there (Matoshree), recited Hanuman Chalisa and returned without creating any news. I don’t understand
why so many people had as if they (Rana couple) What kind of politics is gathered at several places were planning some attack. this?” the BJP leader said.

Considering the feedback of stakeholders and other prevailing conditions, the board is in favour of conducting the annual scheme of assessment at the end of the academic session 202223 and the curriculum has been designed accordingly,” a senior board official said. However, this is not the first time the board has dropped from the syllabus certain chapters which have been part of the curriculum for decades. As part of its decision to rationalise the syllabus, the CBSE in 2020 had announced that chapters on federalism, citizenship, nationalism, and secularism in the class 11 political science textbook will not be considered while assessing students, triggering a major controversy.

Training (NCERT). The dropped chapter “Central Islamic Lands” in the class 11 history syllabus talks about the rise of Islamic empires in the Afro-Asian territories and its implications for economy and society, according to the description in last year’s syllabus. The chapter focused on arenas of Islam in reference to its emergence, the rise of the caliphate and empire building. Similarly, in the class 12 history syllabus, the dropped chapter titled ‘The Mughal Court: Reconstructing Histories through Chronicles’ examined the chronicles of Mughal courts to reconstruct the social, religious and cultural history of the Mughals. The syllabus shared with schools for the 2022-23 academic session also hints at the board’s decision to revert to a single-board exam in a session from the two term examination last year. While the two term exam was announced as a one-time special measure taken in view of the Covid pandemic, the board officials

I do not see that it is fulfilling its responsibilities like the way it should for the benefit of the state...When someone speaks the truth, people (within the party) interpret it differently - as that person is planning to leave the party,” Patel added. He said that people will start looking for an option if the party fails to become their voice and take their interests as their primary concern. Asked whether he plans to the BJP, Patel answered in the negative. “If ever I need to take such a decision for the benefit of the people, I will definitely let you (the media) know. I will take this matter before the people with an open heart,” Patel said.

CBSE drops chapters on Islamic empires, Cold War, verses of Faiz from syllabus NEW DELHI, APR 22 (PTI): The CBSE has dropped chapters about the Non-Aligned Movement, the Cold War era, the rise of Islamic empires in AfroAsian territories, the chronicles of Mughal courts and the industrial revolution from the history and political science syllabi of classes 11 and 12. Similarly, in the class 10 syllabus, the topic “impact of globalisation on agriculture” from a chapter on ‘Food Security’ has been dropped. The translated excerpts from two poems in Urdu by Faiz Ahmed Faiz in the ‘Religion, Communalism and Politics — Communalism, Secular State’ section have also been excluded this year. The CBSE has also dropped from the course content chapters on ‘democracy and diversity’. Asked about the rationale behind the choice of topics or chapters being dropped, officials maintained that the changes are part of rationalisation of syllabus and are in alignment with recommendations by the National Council of Educational Research and
AHMEDABAD, APR 23 (PTI): Days after criticising his own party, Gujarat Congress leader Hardik Patel has praised the ruling BJP for its “decision-making capacity”, which he said is lacking in the leadership of the opposition party’s state unit. Stating that he was “proud to be a Hindu”, Patel, who is working president of the Congress’s state unit, denied speculation that he was joining the BJP, and said that if at all he needs to take such a decision, he would take the matter before people “with an open heart”. Assembly elections in Gujarat are due in December this year. The Congress’s plan to rope in Patidar leader Naresh Patel ahead of the state polls has apparently angered Hardik, who believes that his clout as the community leader will be over if the former joins the Congress. Talking to the media persons on Friday, nearly a week after criticising the state Congress’ “style of functioning”, Patel said he

The ‘R’ or reproductive value indicates the number of people an infected person can spread the disease to, and a pandemic is considered to end if this value goes below one. The preliminary analysis by computational modelling was done by IITMadras’ Department of Mathematics and Centre of Excellence for Computational Mathematics and Data Science headed by Prof Neelesh S Upadhye and Prof S Sundar. This was shared with PTI and according to it, Delhi’s R-value this week was recorded at 2.1. India’s R-value, at present, stands at 1.3, the analysis found. French accuse Russian mercenaries of staging a massacre in Mali O UA G A D O U G O U, BURKINA FASO, APR 23 (AGENCIES): The French military has released videos appearing to show Russian mercenaries burying bodies near an ar my base in northern Mali, which it says is part of a smear campaign against France who handed the base to Malian forces earlier this week. Aerial sur veillance images taken by the French m i l i t a r y o n T h u r s d ay mor ning and provided to The Associated Press show what appear to be 10 Caucasian soldiers covering approximately a dozen Malian bodies with sand 4 kilometres east of the Gossi military base in the country’s north, according to a French officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the press on the matter.
In the video one of the soldiers appears to be filming the scene. The Caucasian soldiers in the video are believed to be members of the Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary force, the officer said. Several tweets with pictures of the bodies have been posted on accounts that support Russia or fake accounts created by Wagner, the officer said. The tweets blame the French for the killings and the burials, according to the French officer. One tweet from an account called Dia Diarra, allegedly created by Wagner, said: “This is what the French left behind when they left base at #Gossi. These are excerpts from a video that was taken after they left! We cannot keep silent about this!” T h e Fr e n c h a r my transfer red control of
the Gossi base to Malian s o l d i e r s o n Tu e s d ay, in what the French said was a safe, orderly and transparent manner. Later that day a “French sensor observed a dozen Caucasian individuals, most likely belonging to the Wagner Group,” and a detachment from the Malian army arrive at the Gossi site and unload equipment, said the French military in a confidential report that was seen by AP. Mali’s army spokesman Colonel Souleymane Dembele said a team had been dispatched to Gossi to investigate, adding “it is still early for us to react on this case”. The French military said the move to discredit French forces operating in northern Mali was part of a coordinated campaign of multiple information attacks on them that has been going on for months.
Antonio Guterres
The invasion ordered by Putin is also a personal betrayal of Guterres who had said till the conflict began on February 24 that a war was unlikely. After the Moscow trip was announced on Friday morning, Guterres’s associate spokesperson Eri Kaneko told reporters: “He wants to discuss with the leadership, what steps can be taken right now in order to silence the guns in order to help the people and in order to allow the people who need to get out to get out and have safe passage.” Guterres had written to both Russia and Ukraine asking to visit their countries in an effort to end the conflict after various diplomatic initiatives by international leaders proved
unsuccessful. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed during phone calls with Putin and Zelensky to negotiate an end to the conflict. Representatives of Russia and Ukraine have been holding talks in Belarus and Turkey and online but have failed to make headway. Russian news service TA S S q u o t e d Fo r e i g n Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying on Friday that there was “slow progress in the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations”. Guterres cancelled a planned trip to Nigeria next week to visit Russia and Ukraine. His visits to the two adversaries come as Russia has intensified its assault in the face of stiff resistance by Ukraine. India extends additional $500M credit line to SL
NEW DELHI, APR 23 (PTI): India has agreed to extend an additional USD 500 million credit line to help Sri Lanka import fuel, Finance Minister Ali Sabry said, amid delays in chalking out a bailout package with the IMF to mitigate the dire financial crisis facing the island nation. Sri Lanka has been struggling to pay for imports after its foreign exchange reserves plummeted sharply in recent times, causing a devaluation of its currency and spiralling inflation. “India has agreed to provide an additional USD 500 million for our fuel imports,” Sabry said on Friday, while adding that he was hopeful that New Delhi would consider handing out another USD 1 billion
UNITED NATIONS, APR 23 (IANS): As peace efforts to end the intensifying Ukraine war have stalled, UN Secretar y-General Antonio Guterres will ramp up his mediation efforts through direct meetings with the Presidents of Russia and Ukraine Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, respectively, next week, according to the world body. G u t e r r e s ’ s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric announced on Friday that the UN chief will “be received by” Putin and Zelensky in their countries and will have working meetings with their Foreign Ministers. During that time there is a need to bring in more investments in US dollars into the central bank. We are talking with several countries. If these efforts are successful, and if investment of about USD 2 billion comes to the central bank, it will help stop the depreciation and stabilise the rupee,” Sabry said. Russian forces were hitting the Azovstal complex with air strikes and trying to storm it, presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych said, adding “the enemy is trying to strangle the final resistance of Mariupol’s defenders”. The biggest battle of the conflict has raged for weeks as Russia seeks to capture a city seen as crucial to its attempts to link the easter n Donbas region with Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula that Moscow seized in 2014. Ru s s i a ’s d e f e n c e ministry said on Friday the remaining fighters had been “securely blockaded” at the steel plant. Twitter bans ads that contradict science on climate change
T
witter says it will no longer allow advertisers on its site who deny the scientific consensus on climate change, echoing a policy already in place at Google. “Ads shouldn’t detract from important conversations about the climate crisis,” the company said in a statement outlining its new policy Friday. There was no indication that the change would affect what users post on the social media site, which along with Facebook has been targeted by groups
seeking to promote misleading claims about climate change. The announcement coinciding with Earth Day came hours before the European Union agreed upon a deal requiring big tech companies to vet their sites more closely for hate speech, disinformation and other harmful content. Twitter said it would provide more information in the coming months on how it plans to provide “reliable, authoritative context to the climate conversations” its users engage in, including from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The U.N.-backed science panel’s reports on the causes and effects of climate change provide the basis for international negotiations to curb climate change. The company already has a dedicated climate topic on its site and offered what it described as “pre-bunks” during last year’s U.N. climate conference to counter misinformation surrounding climate change. ohnny Depp, and exwife Amber Heard have been squaring off in a bombshell civil trial that opened in Virginia 12 days ago, accusing each other of physical and emotional abuse. Depp, 58, is suing Heard, 36, for $50 million over a 2018 op-ed she penned for The Washington Post, alleging that she was a victim of domestic abuse. The piece did not specifically name Depp. Attor neys for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star say her false allegations derailed his career and turned him into a pariah in Hollywood. Heard countersued for $100 million accusing him and his former attorney of conspiring to “destroy and

The couple’s brief marriage detonated in 2016 when Heard, sporting a bruised face, filed for a restraining order at a Los Angeles courthouse as a gaggle of reporters and photographers swarmed. The divorce was finalized in 2017, with Heard receiving a whopping $7 million payout for the 15-month union. But the mutual mudslinging has continued in full force, with both actors becoming better known for their toxic marriage than their movie roles. The civil trial left off Thursday with Depp wrapping up his third day on the stand in Fairfax County Circuit Court in Virginia. The “Black

But even if you don’t live in sunny South Florida, I suggest getting outside into the sunshine to increase your vitamin D naturally. Boost vitamin D levels like your ancestors did I encourage them to boost their levels the same way their ancestors did – with a practice I call gentle tanning. Here’s how it works: 1. Take it slow at first. If you haven’t spent a lot of time in the sun, start out gradually. If you’re fair-skinned, go outside for about 10 to 20 minutes a day. If you have a darker complexion, then you can push it to about an hour. 2. Put some skin in

While helpful, 30 ng/mL is on the lower end of where I want you to be. I tell my patients that I want them somewhere between 60 ng/mL and 80 ng/mL. As one of the first doctors in the country to test vitamin D levels, many of my patients were surprised by how low their vitamin D levels were. the game. This means peeling down and getting a good area of your skin exposed. Roll up your sleeves and pant legs. But do wear a hat. Your face gets enough natural sunlight exposure every day. 3. Pay attention to the time. Get out in the sun when your shadow is shorter than you are. Typically, that’s between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. That’s when the sun is highest and rays are strongest so you can get good exposure over a short time. Just 10 minutes in the midday sun can give you 10,000 IU of vitamin D. I understand, not everyone can get outside as often as they want. In that case, look for a full spectrum lamp. You can find these lightboxes online. Look for one that gives off 2,500 to 10,000 lux of light to mimic the sun. It’s also a good idea to supplement. I recommend vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol. That’s the type of vitamin D made by your own body. Take 5,000 IUs a day or more. And combine it with 45-90 mcg of vitamin K and 600 to 1,000 mg of magnesium to increase absorption. Al Sears MD

According to Sportstar, Pujara reached his ton by pulling a short ball from Joe Leach for the 14th four of his innings. He was eventually dismissed for a 206-ball 109. He had earlier scored an unbeaten double against Derbyshire. Pujara became only the second Indian to score a double-century in the County Championship. Mohammad Azharuddin was the first, having scored 212 against Leicestershire in 1991 and 205 against Durham in 1994, both for Derbyshire. The veteran batter has been suffering a lean patch of late. While his last international century came against Australia in January 2019 in Sydney, he managed just 124 runs in six innings in his most recent Test series against South Africa with an average of 20.66. His poor form led to his exclusion from India’s Test squad for the Sri Lanka series.
Novak Djokovic
BELGRADE, APR 23 (AGENCIES): World number one Novak Djokovic came back from a set down to beat Russia’s Karen Khachanov to reach Serbia Open final on Saturday, his first this year. Djokovic lost the first set 4-6 but then bounced back to win the second 6-1 before clinching the decider 6-2 to seal the victory in the semifinal that lasted one hour 59 minutes. Due to him not taking the vaccine against Covid-19, Djokovic was barred from playing at the Australian Open and the warm-up events leading up to it.
His first appearance on tour this year was at the ATP500 event in Dubai in February where Czech qualifier Jiri Vesely stunned him 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the quarterfinals, which took away the number one ranking from the Serbian. Russia’s Daniil Medvedev became the new world number one but Djokovic soon got the top ranking back courtesy of the Russian’s poor performances. Djokovic then played at Monte Carlo Masters where he received a bye in the opening round but lost to eventual runner-up Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets.
Carlos Alcaraz
BARCELONA, APR 23 (AP): Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz thrilled the home crowd by beating topseeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets to advance to the semifinals of the Barcelona Open. Alcaraz won the quarterfinal 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 after breaking the fifth-ranked Greek five times on the outdoor clay court named for Rafael Nadal. The 18-year-old Alcaraz is aiming for his third title of the season after he won at Rio de Janeiro in February and in Miami this month. Alcaraz called it his biggest win on clay. “Unbelievable game that I played, an unbelievable atmosphere
that I lived today on court. It was unbelievable everything,” the precocious talent who is drawing comparisons to a young Nadal said. “The atmosphere here, the crowd, the level that I played, the level of the match. It was incredible.” All of the players who reached the quarterfinals had already played thirdround matches earlier on Friday that had been pushed back from Thursday due to rain delays. Before facing Alcaraz, Tsitsipas needed just over an hour to beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-1, 6-4. Alcaraz similarly eased past fellow countryman Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-3.
Mumbai City crashes out of AFC Champions League Pant fined 100% match fee; 1-match ban NEW DELHI, APR 23 (PTI): Indian Super League side Mumbai City FC were eliminated from the AFC Champions League after suffering a 0-6 drubbing at the hands of Al Shabab of Saudi Arabia in a group B match here. It was Hattan Bahebri’s hat-trick which confirmed Al Shabab as the winners of group B on Friday night. The Saudi side took the lead in the 19th minute when former Al Hilal duo of Nawaf Al and Hattan Bahebri combined with the club captain feeding his teammate with a fine through pass that Bahebri finished with aplomb from inside the box. An unfortunate moment for Mumbai City captain Mourtada Fall then allowed Al Shabab to double their lead 10 minutes before the break. line but ended up sending it into the roof of the net. Coach Marius Sumudica’s men started the second half with the same drive of the first, and within seven minutes, they had extended
their lead through Abdullah Al Joui. Al Joui latched on to Muteb Al Harbi’s pass down the left and cut inside on his right before applying the finish from inside the area.
Another Al Joui run from the left saw him dance around the Islanders’ defenders and find Al Abid, who fed Bahebri inside the box and the latter added his second of the night in the
64th minute. Unbeaten in five and with 13 points to their name, Al Shabab march into the next round, joining city rivals Al Hilal and Qatar’s Al Duhail SC in the Round of 16. They conclude their group stage on Tuesday against Al Jazira, while Mumbai City have been officially eliminated and will look to improve their place on the table when they face Air Force Club. A mere minute later, Bahebri completed his hattrick with the pick of the goals, controlling Khalid Al Ghamdi’s pass from the right, maneuvering around Rahul Bheke before striking on the half-volley to make it 5-0. With nine minutes left on the clock, the hat-trick hero turned provider, advancing down the right and squaring for Junior who beat Fall for the ball, squeezing home his side’s sixth of the night.

During the last over of the chase, Rovman Powell heaved a hip-high full toss by Obed McCoy into the midwicket stands for his third consecutive six to bring down a six-ball 36-run target at the start of the over to 18 required off three balls. The full-toss prompted demand of a no-ball above waist height by Powell and
his partner Kuldeep Yadav. With umpires Nitin Menon and Nikhil Patwardhan standing firm on their ground, the Capitals dug-out made gestures asking the umpires to refer it to television umpire. With the rules having no such provision, Menon, India’s only umpire in world cricket’s elite panel, turned down the request.

Kohli gets another duck as SRH thrash RCB
MUMBAI, APR 23 ( P T I ) : Vi r a t Ko h l i ’s continued woeful form was a sign of things to come as Royal Challengers Bangalore were literally walloped by Sunrisers Hyderabad who cantered to an easy nine-wicket victory in Saturday’s onesided IPL match here. Kohli was once again dismissed outside the offstump off the very first delivery he faced as RCB were shot out for a meagre 68 in just 16.1 overs. This was the sixth lowest total in the history of IPL. The Sunrisers pace attack led by Marco Jansen (3/25 in 4 overs) and ably supported by Umran Malik (1/19 in 4 overs) and T Natarajan (3/10 in 3 overs) left the star-studded RCB line-up rattled with pace, swing and seam. In reply, it took SRH only eight overs as Abhishek Sharma butchered an already def lated RCB attack to score 47 off 28 balls in company of Kane Williamson (16 not out). The win also took

SRH to second place with 10 points while RCB, who are still placed third, will like to forget this game as a bad dream. But one
would wonder if Kohli can do the same as it’s only getting worse for one of the contemporary greats in world cricket.
There couldn’t have been a quicker end to a contest as Jansen removed Faf du Plessis (5), Kohli (0) and Anuj Rawat (0) off second, third and final delivery of the second over to make it 8 for 3. In between, leftarm spinner Jagadeesha Suchith (2/12) was also unrelenting as RCB never got elbow room to get some momentum going their way. It soon became 20 for 4 when Natarajan got Glenn Maxwell (12) caught brilliantly by skipper Kane Williamson at mid-off. The other player to reach double figure was Suyash Prabhudesai (15). B u t , i t i s Ko h l i ’s d i s m i s s a l t h a t wo u l d certainly deflate his legion of fans as his problems outside the off-stump seems to have resurfaced. There was not much resistance from the other batters and once Dinesh Karthik (7) was caught down leg-side off Suchith trying to sweep, it was all over for RCB.
Wokha District Football Association 2-0 in the third match. In a high pressure match, with both teams needing a win to progress gave it all but the match belonged to defending champion Phek. It was their captain, K h we t e l h i T h o p i w h o scored the much needed goal in the 14th minute of the match to bring much relieve for the team. Substitute, Muluyi Medeo made an impact for the team by scoring his first goal in 58th minute. Phek needing to win by a better goal margin to qualify fought tooth and nail to get more goals but couldn’t break through as the match ended 2-0. With today’s defeat, Wokha team bowed out of the tournament with a win and two defeats. Phek will now enter the quarterfinal of the tournament as the runners up from Group A. Gourav was down 0-8 in the final but produced a terrific comeback to make it 9-9 right at the end of the bout. But a bigger scoring move (four-pointer) from the Iranian meant the Indian grappler had to settle with the silver medal. It is Gourav’s second silver medal at the Asian Championships after finishing runner-up in 2020 as well. Meanwhile, men’s 70kg freestyle wrestler Naveen pinned Temuulen Enkhtuya of Mongolia

Gujarat snatch 8-run win over KKR
MUMBAI, APR 23 (IANS): Gujarat Titans’ bowling attack successfully defended 156 to defeat Kolkata Knight Riders by eight runs at DY Patil Stadium on Saturday. Despite losing seven wickets in the last five overs after Hardik Pandya’s 67 to end at 156/9, Gujarat’s bowling attack clicked in unison, taking four wickets in the first seven overs. They were also aided by fielders taking some stunning catches to restrict Kolkata to 148/8 in 20 overs. The result means that Gujarat are now on top of the points table. With a new opening combination in Sam Billings and Sunil Narine, Ko l k a t a ’s h o p e s o f a blistering start began well when the former brought out a glorious straight drive against Mohammed Shami. But Shami had the last laugh as Billings top-edged a pull to wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. Shami then setup Narine with two short balls on body and then slipped one on hips,

which the batter pulled uncomfortably to a diving short fine leg. Nitish Rana fell cheaply, forced to poke at a Lockie Ferguson delivery and took a healthy edge behind to Saha as Gujarat successfully overturned not out decision. Shreyas Iyer had begun to look comfortable at the crease but was undone by over the wicket angle from Yash Dayal and nicked behind to Saha. Rinku Singh found the boundary rope five
times in his stay of 35 and shared a 45-run stand with Venkatesh Iyer. But in an attempt to smash Yash Dayal over mid-wicket, Rinku could only manage a bottom edge going behind to Saha. Venkatesh tried to slog-sweep Rashid Khan but Abhinav Manohar took a stunning catch just in front of deep mid-wicket boundary rope. In between, Andre Russell got his first boundary with a thickish edge off Dayal over Saha’s head.
Russell smacked a Ferguson full toss over longoff. Khan got out Shivam Mavi and almost had Umesh Yadav lbw with the googly but replays showed ball missing the stumps. With 45 needed off 24 balls, Russell upper cut Shami over backward point for six. Umesh cleared his front leg to swat Ferguson over deep mid-wicket for six more. Russell hit a six down the ground off Dayal but could manage five runs off rest of the over for the equation to read as 18 off the final over. On the first ball, Russell smashed an Alzarri Joseph full toss over long-on for a huge six. But Joseph had the last laugh as Russell mistimed a pull to fine leg immediately. Brief Scores: Gujarat Titans 156/9 in 20 overs (Hardik Pandya 67, David Miller 27; Andre Russell 4/5, Tim Southee 3/24) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 148/8 in 20 overs (Andre Russell 48, Rinku Singh 35; Mohammed Shami 2/20, Rashid Khan 2/22) by eight runs
