Chaos over Pegasus inside Parliament TMC MP snatches I-T minister’s Snoopgate statement and tears it in Rajya Sabha NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): A Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP snatched papers from Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday and tore them as the Pegasus snooping row turned ugly. As the proceedings in the Upper House descended into chaos, Shantanu Sen, who targeted the Communications and Information Technology Minister as he was making a statement on the snooping issue, also alleged that Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri abused him in the House and was on the verge of physically assaulting him before he was rescued by colleagues. Sen also claimed that Puri even rudely gesticulated at him. Official sources said the government will seek action against some Opposition MPs who allegedly misbehaved with the treasury bench members in the

Rajya Sabha on Thursday after TMC member’s act. Sources said some Opposition MPs “misbehaved” with the treasury bench members, including a minister, even after the House was adjourned. While BJP president J P Nadda accused the opposition of creating “obstacles” in the country’s development journey by disrupting Parliament to “save” its political existence, Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi condemned the conduct of the opposition members as a “new low” in India’s parliamentary democracy. Opposition par ties have stalled proceedings in Parliament alleging the
union government’s involvement in the alleged snooping following reports that nearly 300 mobile phone numbers including of journalists, activists, opposition leaders and even of union ministers from India figured in this list of potential snooping targets by Israel’s NSO group which sells its Pegasus spyware only to “vetted” governments and government agencies. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that the alleged snooping using the Pegasus spyware was “worse than the Watergate scandal” which erupted in the US during the Nixon presidency.
An AICC statement said that Pradesh Congress Committees held protest marches in different states demanding an impartial inquiry monitored by the Supreme Court and the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah. In the Rajya Sabha, the TMC, Congress and other opposition party members, who had earlier forced two adjournments of the proceedings, rushed to the well of the House as Minister Vaishnaw was called to make a statement on the snooping controversy. Shantanu Sen snatched the papers from the hands of the minister, tore and flung them in the air, prompting
the minister to stop making the statement after reading a few lines amid the ruckus and say he was laying a copy on the table of the House. Deputy Chairman Harivansh asked the members to desist from unparliamentary behaviour, before adjourning the proceedings of the House for the day. He said the minister has laid the statement on the table of the House and asked if the MPs want to ask him any questions on that. But the opposition MPs continued to raise slogans against the snooping controversy. The statement that the minister laid on the table of the House was similar to the one he had made on July 19 in the Lok Sabha, a day after the reports of alleged snooping emerged. Representatives of the Press Club of India, Editors Guild of India, Indian Women’s Press Corps, Press Association, Delhi Union of Journalists along with some eminent media personalities demanded at a news conference that the government should launch a probe into the Pegasus spyware case and come clean on the issue.

DIMAPUR, JUL 22 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has expressed deep shock at the “unconstitutional” and “illegal” hacking of cell phones of country’s prominent personalities, including Rahul Gandhi and his office staff. Holding Prime Minister Narendra Modi responsible for spying on India’s security forces, judiciary, cabinet ministers, opposition leaders, journalists and other activists through a foreign entity’s spyware, NPCC president K Therie in a press release accused him of committing treason and an inexcusable
breach of national security. He also demanded sacking of Union home minister Amit Shah immediately for his alleged failure to uphold provisions of the Constitution of India, which he had sworn to uphold. According to Therie, the tapping scandal was a blatant reflection of loss of ideas and wisdom of the BJP government, which had to stoop so low as to snoop for others’ ideas. It was also an exposure of the BJP’s greed for power that knew no bounds, he added. He alleged that the BJP had indulged in EVM fraud in past elections, adding that a clearer picture

Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya is significant as Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair a meeting with the North Eastern States’ Chief Ministers on Saturday in Shillong to draw a roadmap to resolve the vexed boundary disputes among the North Eastern States. Assam has boundary disputes not only with Meghalaya, but with other neighbouring states of Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh stretching over decades creating unrest in the border areas. “The Union Home Minister had desired that before the 75th year Independence of the country, all these issues not only with Meghalaya and Assam but Assam and other states
also should be resolved. It will be our endeavour to resolve this within that time-frame. However, it all depends on how the talks move forward,” Sangma said.“We are of the view that with the new leadership in Assam now having a very positive mindset, we shall be able to move forward and try to find an amicable solution to the dispute,” Sangma voiced optimism. In the past, Meghalaya had submitted documents and maps on its claims to the 12 sectors/areas of Upper Tarabari, Gizang Reserve Forest, Hahim, Langpih, Borduar, Boklapara, Nongwah-Matamur, KhanaparaPillangkata, Deshdemoreah, Block I and Block II, Khanduli-Psiar and Ratacherra. The total area of difference is 2,765.14 square km, of which Blocks I and II cover 1,583.42 square km. The Meghalaya Assembly had in March 2011 passed a resolution to urge the central government to constitute a Boundary Commission to re-examine and redefine the inter-state boundary between the two states.

COVID situation due to mismanagement: Mnp Cong DGGI unearths Rs 338 cr fake

IMPHAL, JUL 22: Opposition Congress on Thursday came down heavily on the BJP-led coalition government in Manipur, accusing it of “mismanagement of the Covid situation” in the state. AICC Manipur incharge, Bhakta Charan Das, camping in Imphal to take stock of the organizational matter of the state unit of the party, expressed his concerned over the alarming COVID-19 situation in the state. Addressing a news conference at Imphal Congress Bhavan, Das observed that daily surge of infection around 1000 and 10 to 15 deaths daily due to the pandemic in a small state like Manipur having population around 30 lakh was not a matter to be taken lightly. “It is due to the mismanagement on the part
of the state government,” he said. “The BJP-led government is not taking the COVID-19 management seriously. BJP is not busy in managing the COVID-19 and serving the people, they are busy in strengthening the government, he said. They (BJP) were indulging in all kinds of illegal activities for the survival of the government, he accused. Das alleged that the state government was doing nothing for controlling the spread of the virus except imposing curfew and various restrictions in the name of stopping the spread of the virus. The government was not fighting the pandemic with a definite policy. The state government has not implemented an effective policy to effectively control
the spread of the virus, he added. The state lost the fight against COVID-19 under the leadership of chief minister N Biren Singh as a health minister of the state, he further said. Asserting that the N Biren Singh-led government was responsible for the devastating condition of the COVID-19 in the state, Das demanded that Biren and his government must offer apology to the people of the state their COVID-19 mismanagement. He further criticized Modi-led government at the Centre for remaining silent even though people of the state are at the limit of woes due to mismanagement of the COVID-19 crisis. Taking up the matter of disqualification of 12 MLAs of the ruling parties for the question of holding office of
profit, the AICC Manipur in-charge said that the state government does not have the legal right to appoint the 12 MLAs as parliamentary secretaries. The 12 MLAs should also accept this and respect the constitution. They are illegally in the government and they should resign from being MLAs of the state Assembly, he demanded. It may be mentioned that the Supreme Court of India had fixed July 26 for the announcement of judgment in the case seeking disqualification of the BJP MLAs for holding the office of profit. On queries from the reporters over the organizational matter of the party in the state, he said that new president of the MPCC will be completed within seven days, he said.
invoicing racket in Assam
GUWAHATI, JULY 22 (IANS): The Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) has unearthed a Rs 338 crore fake invoicing racket in which fake input tax credit involving Rs 28.97 crore of Goods and Services Tax was generated, officials said on Thursday. According to the officials, two accused persons -- a trader and a tax consultant -- were arrested on Tuesday for violation of different provisions of the GST Act. They were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court, which remanded them to 14 days’ judicial custody. Additional Director General (GST In-
telligence, Guwahati Zonal Unit), L.S. Gangte, said that the duo was arrested as they were involved in a racket of receiving and issuing fake invoices for coal. “The firm of a trader showed purchase of coal from Gujarat, Punjab and Delhi to his Guwahati unit to avail input tax credit (ITC). The unit subsequently issued invoices to cement and coke manufacturers, and other traders in the northeast without the supply of any goods. “The fake invoices and bills for coal, issued by the trader, were used as cover documents for the coal procured clandestinely and to pass on irregular ITC,” the official said.

He said that whatever he or his colleagues talk over phone, everything is transparent and they say the same thing to the people and the media, and there is nothing to hide. The AASU leader asserted that the core issue is very clear and it is the influx of illegal foreigners, which is a threat to the identity of the indigenous people of Assam and the Northeastern region. “Assam Agitation took place because of this and the Assam Accord was signed. But it has not been implemented and the situation became graver. Northeast was becoming a dumping ground with the imposition of Citizenship (Amendment) Act,” he added.

Elastic plastic ban
A
fter the recent deluge in Dimapur, some small nullahs cutting across the city erupted into streams of all manner o f plastic and the sight was electrifying. Layers of plastic and garbage topped the nullahs as they looked like glacier flow. The scene clearly reminded all and sundry in Dimapur especially the civic authorities that despite ban on plastic which was highlighted in the media, little has changed. This is one of the many instances where everybody appears more intent on other aspects than on health and hygiene. The civic bodies are not able to do what is needed to be done simply because of composition or because those in authority are too busy chasing new projects. When ban on plastic was officially announced, the government did it with much fanfare as if it was actually either capable or prepared or determined. It may be recalled that Nagaland officially declared a complete ban on single-use plastic following the cabinet decision on June 10,2019. According to the notification in the Nagaland Gazette stated, the ban went into effect midSeptember 2019. Plastic items banned included- 1.all plastic carry bags, with or without handles, irrespective of thickness and size; 2. plastic cutlery including plates, plastic cups, straws, stirrers etc, 3. cutlery and other decorative made of styrofoam (thermocol) and 4.polythene, nylon, poly-vinyl-carbohydrates, poly-propylene and poly-Styrene. Though a majority of states have not been successful in totally banning plastic use, Sikkim is among the few states where it has been successful. Sikkim’s success was mainly through its three-pronged strategy. It strictly enforced the ban, made awareness compulsory in all institutions including market places and third, provided affordable alternative bags and at the same time, encouraged people to take their own shopping bags to market. At the national level, the government of India has identified the Single Use Plastic (SUP) items to be banned based on an index of their utility and environmental impact. Environmental experts have welcomed this move while plastic manufacturers have expressed reservations and asked for putting off the ban by a year on account of the pandemic-induced economic slump. The new draft will replace the existing rules on plastic waste management which were notified in 2016 and amended in 2018. The new 2021 draft rules have proposed to prohibit manufacture, import, stocking, distribution and sale of certain singleuse plastics from January 1, 2022. While mulling on suggestions and objections from people across the nation till May 11,2021, the ministry of environment will act on the feedback on three areas. In the threestage ban, the first category of SUP items proposed to be phased out are plastic sticks used in balloons, flags, candy, ice-cream and ear buds, and thermocol used in decorations. The second category, proposed to be banned from July 1, 2022, includes items such as plates, cups, glasses and cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straws, trays; wrapping and packing films used in sweet boxes; invitation cards; cigarette packets; stirrers and plastic banners that are less than 100 microns in thickness. A third category of prohibition is for non-woven bags below 240 microns in thickness. This is proposed to start from September 30, 2022. The government may be driven by a sense of duty and purpose but it will need more than planning to effectively and successfully implement them.
DailyDevotion Sanctification (1)
This is the will of God, your sanctification… —1 Thessalonians 4:3 The Death Side. In sanctification God has to deal with us on the death side as well as on the life side. Sanctification requires our coming to the place of death, but many of us spend so much time there that we become morbid. There is always a tremendous battle before sanctification is realized— something within us pushing with resentment against the demands of Christ. When the Holy Spirit begins to show us what sanctification means, the struggle starts immediately. Jesus said, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate… his own life…he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). In the process of sanctification, the Spirit of God will strip me down until there is nothing left but myself, and that is the place of death. Am I willing to be myself and nothing more? Am I willing to have no friends, no father, no brother, and no self-interest— simply to be ready for death? That is the condition required for sanctification. No wonder Jesus said, “I did not come to bring peace but a sword” (Matthew 10:34). This is where the battle comes, and where so many of us falter. We refuse to be identified with the death of Jesus Christ on this point. We say, “But this is so strict. Surely He does not require that of me.” Our Lord is strict, and He does require that of us. Am I willing to reduce myself down to simply “me”? Am I determined enough to strip myself of all that my friends think of me, and all that I think of myself? Am I willing and determined to hand over my simple naked self to God? Once I am, He will immediately sanctify me completely, and my life will be free from being determined and persistent toward anything except God (see 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24). When I pray, “Lord, show me what sanctification means for me,” He will show me. It means being made one with Jesus. Sanctification is not something Jesus puts in me— it is Himself in me (see 1 Corinthians 1:30).

others have done it; mothers in law are doing it; wives and husbands are not far behind in it as well as lovers and neighbors and the corner house people and the vendor. As everyone is snooping around, on their neighbors, spouses and siblings, can the government be far behind… Every government is doing it….by various means and times. Only now they have all graduated to use the mobile phones to tap into conversations, likes and dislikes etc. It is then human nature to snoop around. It is in their blood as it were. Can we then ignore it? The Pegasus Pegasus is the winged horse in Greek mythology, which sprang from the blood of Medusa when Perseus cut off her head. Pegasus was ridden by Perseus in his rescue of Andromeda, and by Bellerophon when he fought the Chimera; the spring Hippocrene arose from a blow of his hoof. Pegasus is the spyware developed by the Israeli firm NSO to snoop on people, sold and used by government agencies around the world. The spyware gets installed on mobile phones without the knowledge of the user and taps into conversations, preferences, likes and so on. The governments around the world use this spyware to tap into the phones of journalists, politicians and all

others who in any way oppose and criticize the government, and compromise the nation’s security - whose acts are considered anti-national and anti- government, causing law and order problems etc. The Problem The question that arises out of this situation is crucial because it not only impacts the governance of the nation and authorities but also the people - the man on the street. How much does the government trust its people? Has it got the right to snoop on people? Aren’t the people free to criticize the government and its governance and express dissent in a democracy? Is this snooping activity authorized by the constitution? Isn’t there freedom of speech? Further, even if it is authorized legally by the government, can acts and speeches thus considered anti-national can be snooped upon? Can this act of snooping be questioned for legal redress if it is not considered anti-national? While snooping is usually for a time and in a particular setting as in a situation of war, invasion or national insecurity, snooping can go on in times of political upheaval too. Snooping can be a widespread activity consisting of trade, commerce, defense deals etc., too. In brief, snooping is a widespread activity and done for various reasons. Arun Kumar Wesley
ivestock rearing is an important livelihood activity performed throughout India. Good housing and proper hygiene is an integral part of human and animal welfare. The World Health Organization defines hygiene as, “conditions and practices that help to maintain health and prevent the spread of diseases.” The overall aim of animal hygiene is to keep animals healthy and protect them from all factors that can impair their health, well- being and production. Diseases are not caused by a specific infectious agent but by a number of environmental factors such as inadequate housing, poor air quality, unhygienic/ unsuitable feeding, bad handling, insufficient quarantine and biosecurity measures (cleaning and disinfecting). Animal housing in any system (large scale, small scale or backyard) of livestock rearing is to be designed in such a way that it allows optimum standards of hygiene and comfort, protect them from all kinds of weather conditions and harsh climate. Overcrowding of animals is detrimental for their well- being and must be avoided, a safe distance between animal housing area and human residential area is mandatory. For a good shelter, sufficient water availability, sunlight and efficient drainage is vital as livestock are exposed to the challenge of potential pathogens in their sheds, pens, brooders etc. These pathogens are often brought from outside by wind (viral agents can travel a great distance through air), dust (Q fever, brucellosis, tuberculosis), vectors (mosquitoes, lice, ticks, fleas,) etc. Improper ventilation is injurious to the animal as stagnant air, dust, condensation of water on surface, harmful gas, microbes etc. can exacerbate respiratory and enteric diseases, mastitis and
How unique is being unique
ntroduction We live in an epoch of instantaneous copycat culture, severe competition and polarised ethnic identity politics. The idea of copyright, patent, DOI, etc., are all geared towards maintaining the uniqueness of something, an idea, an art, a music note, a literary piece, etc. Over the centuries, humans construct their patterns of categorization (Brosius et al, 1986), culture, language, worldview, vastly influenced by their past experiences and geographical locations. For example, people who settled near the oceans have myths connected with the sea; so also, people who have lived in the mountains carry myths related to trees, animals, mountains, streams and rivers. All these people (naively) think that their habits are (so) unique. At best, people who can trace their origin as distant as possible will be sensible as they possess some sort of scientific temper leading to social learning (Social learning theory suggests that new behaviours can be attained by seeing and emulating others). Open-mindedness is a linchpin for societal harmony (behaviour). But if you converse with people who do not regard (or have no idea) the million years of the evolutionary process from Ameoba to Homo Sapiens but begin their origin from their (about 100 years old) villages, it will be hard to come to a sensible discussion. What is so unique Uniqueness arises from a common mental exercise of “comparison” while mingling with others. If you are not associating with others, there is no chance to find out that you are unique from others. C. R. Snyder and H. L. Fromkin (1980) predicts that the perception of extreme similarity (SM) of self to others leads an individual to seek a behavioural strategy that gives him/her a greater sense of uniqueness. Therefore, others become a reference for your uniqueness. True, there are some things unique and irreplicable on this planet. On the other hand, there are many things commonly found in many places but unscientifically claimed by a few. Food items and preparations may be unique but when broken down into scientific analysis – they are either protein, carbohydrate, fats, fibre, vitamins, minerals, etc. Some people claim spears, knives, spades, chicken, ducks,
sugarcanes, onions, beans, rice, chillies, yam, etc with some prefixes (of their tribe or culture). If you ask them details such as – who invented it, who discovered it, who first brought it in, who planted and harvested it, the chemical composition, etc, they would be flabbergasted. Perhaps, they had to give those local names for the sake of identifying them from other things. That process is tolerable for the sake of communication. But, fervidly claiming these unscientific and village-level names are just a sign that they have not seen the same animal or crop growing in others parts of the world. So, if the so-called unique things are found in other places, then they are not so unique. The only explanation could be “ignorance or lack of exposure”. You may think that your idea is so unique until you find out that someone already had that idea before you. It is similar to “re-inventing the wheel”. Is uniqueness shareable Yes, it is shareable. The uniqueness of a particular species, tribe, community, music, dance, embroidery, a story is itself shared by people of the same or similar type. Either this is pointed out as unique by an external force or the people within the community feel and find that their peculiarity in something is unique. Considering oneself (one’s community) as unique but not considering others as unique is a wrong syllogism. This thought pattern itself can be considered unique and one can apply for “patent”. Ha… ha…ha… If uniqueness exists in you, others must be different from you. That difference itself is unique. If you cannot consider the other as unique, you cannot be unique either because the principle of “uniqueness” is a borrowed English word. What does not exist on this earth cannot possibly exist in you alone. You may not share similar patterns of life with others but at least you can share the concept of uniqueness with others. At times, unscientific and cocooned ethnic frames of mind blind people from seeing larger truths. It is like asking, “Is there anymore village beyond my village?” If different groups of people share the same thing, it is not so unique anymore; rather it is common to many. Then the idea of uniqueness vanishes.
What I find unique I find it unique – how people magnify micro differences for geopolitical gain and consciously numb their senses in acknowledging macro similarities; how people accumulate countless things on this earth but cannot carry anything after death; how people fight for the uniqueness of their history, culture, land, tribe and community without having a civil sense that others also feel the same (or similar) level of uniqueness; how people try to annihilate others while at the same time claiming to be worshipping God (their God would be amused); how people use convenient pieces of written or oral histories to stitch their myopic ethnic pictures while forgetting that others also can read them through and through. These human behavioural patterns are truly unique. Conclusion The farther you can trace your human origin along with migrations, settlements, destructions, developments and refinements, the more likely you will have a wide-ranging outlook in life. Histories (oral & written) are man-made but humanity is divine, and being “humane” is an innate quality we all have. Very few enlightened people (like Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, etc) can cultivate, nurture and practise it. A multi-cultural mindset is what we require to survive in the twenty-first century. Despite the hype on uniqueness, at the end of life, humans return to earth as manure for plants. We eat plants for survival and after our death, plants use us as manure for their growth. After all, what was so unique humans claimed in their life when they all die and perish? It is unique that humans claim to be so unique but all end up as dust. This mindset is so unique to the human kingdom (if not to animal and plant kingdoms). If you consciously feed your brain with lies over and over again, your subconscious mind will assume as truth. Get closer to truth, far from fabrication. Genuinely ask “what is so unique about being unique?” Fr Paul Lelen Haokip (The author is a PhD research scholar, Department of Sociology and Social Work, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bangalore, Karnataka, India. other illnesses. Therefore, proper ventilation and dry surroundings is imperative. Environmental pollution poses deleterious effect on both man and animal, so regular and careful disposal of sewage and farm/ animal waste is necessary to prevent pollution in air, water, soil and risk to pathogenic organisms present in farm such as Salmonella spp, Schistosoma spp, ascaris, etc.. The infective agents excreted by diseased animals serve as source of infection to healthy stock by contact (leptospirosis, African swine fever), ingestion (salmonellosis, parasitosis, brucellosis and H.S., etc.), inhalation (tuberculosis, brooder pneumonia, and foot and mouth disease) to site a few instances. A major approach to reduce this challenge relates to separating sick animals from healthy stock and cleaning the farmstead by scrubbing, dusting, washing and disinfection between batches of animals to the house. Although most disinfectants are effective against a lot of bacteria, enveloped viruses and fungi, there is no single perfect disinfectant for use in all circumstances so it is important to consider the surface to be cleaned and the harmful microorganisms most likely present. A stronger degreaser should be used periodically to deal with body oils and other grime that builds up in the shelter over time, as these can render disinfectants ineffective. Farm wastes can be met with sustainable approach by recycling them through composting and biogas production. Another major aspect of hygiene in livestock production involves inculcating hygienic feeding practices, as feed provides direct entry of entities. It is essential for persons in charge of an animal or farm to maintain good personal hygiene such as washing hands
and feet with warm, soapy water or disinfectants before entry in animal shelter because loads of pathogens having zoonotic potential can be transfered from human to animals. The utensils and equipments used in animal feeding and collection of animal food products such as milk, eggs must be clean and sterilised with hot water or other needful agents. Poor feed storage practices deteriorates feed quality and is harmful to animal health, this can be avoided by making sure that the feed quality is acceptable and storage places are hygienic, dry and free from rodent, insect, or pest. Applying pest control protocols will help reduce insect and pest related diseases. Lastly, Routine examination of animals by a veterinarian is cardinal and must be consulted for vaccination against prevalent diseases in the area. In case of meat producing animals, when suitable slaughter age is attained, animals are to be handled with hygienic and safe slaughter practices to avoid contamination. Prioritize both antemortem and postmortem care as stress, injury, discomfort and improper slaughter methods can affect the meat quality. In case of sudden death or death due to disease, the carcass of animal should be carefully buried or incinerated. Following these will not only help avoid bacterial, viral, parasitic infections and related illness in animals, it will also protect people from numerous zoonotic diseases and thus resulting in a healthy community/ population along with thriving livestock. Proper hygiene is also fundamental for bridging the demand- supply gap and hence encouraged. Address Covid anxiety in children
W
hile Covid has affected all age groups and sections in society, children are probably the worst affected and most ignored. Most observations and research have focused on health impact, mortality, morbidity, financial and geopolitical impact of the pandemic. During all this, children are stuck within the bounds of their homes, surrounded by sad and scary news of sickness and death, many have lost their parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts or heard of the loss in their classmates’ homes. Being confined to a limited space, unable to meet peers and friends, unable to indulge in sports and physical activities, pursuing education via Internet on mobile and laptop screens or sometimes being left out of classes because the facility is not available, it’s a difficult world to adapt to. And while everyone gets a say, they are asked to shut up and study, they are expected to be grateful that they are not getting infected. This causes immense stress on a child, leading to fear, anxiety, sleep disturbance, mood disturbance and behavioural issues. Many children who were already vulnerable have developed panic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders and anxiety and mood related disorders. The impact on self-esteem and confidence is significant. Some have witnessed higher levels of family conflicts and domestic violence. The uncertainty associated with exams, future, career has further confused high school children. Internet and gaming addiction is on the rise and psychosomatic problems are widespread.
The problem statement is huge but it needs to be defined to take effective steps. As psychiatrists, we often see children being referred for behavioural issues but parents are reluctant due to stigma associated with the word psychiatry. But closing one’s eyes doesn’t make the problem go away. We, as adults, need to anticipate the problem and take preventive measures. Taking into cognizance that children are vulnerable is the first step. Talking to them about their feelings, letting them express their emotions, taking guidance and counselling to manage stress are all measures which can help in avoiding negative outcomes. We need a proper routine, a mutually supportive social environment and discipline to engage in daily activities productively. The emphasis has to be on finding a balance with new way of life, apart from Covid-appropriate behaviour to avoid infection, there needs to be a strategy to ensure balance between physical, emotional and social aspects of life. Interacting regularly with friends and families in small groups, taking time out to play, getting off the screen to enjoy the beauty of nature surrounding us, cooking and eating together, music, dance, arts and crafts are all ways to add creative interest in daily life and de-stress regularly. Those who have lost close family members and parents need professional intervention to deal with the trauma associated with sudden loss. With foresight and empathy, we can find a way to adapt to the post-Covid world and hopefully make it even better. Jyoti Kapoor is Senior Psychiatrist and Founder of Manasthali (IANS)
Reader’s Post Sir,
The field heroes
While the pandemic has been putting our families, communities, economies under unprecedented pressure, farmers have been standing strong in the middle of this storm. Their activity is so much more than a business and this has become more evident today. Despite facing drought situations, infestations, etc., they continue to do the hard work it takes to grow crops and have been taking necessary precautions to farm safely during this time. They say that agriculture represents the backbone of our societies and we know that you have not stopped farming. For this, we are grateful. Yetoli Swu, Kohima

Ladakh row: India seeks to resolve remaining issues
India and China have been locked in a standoff at multiple friction points in eastern Ladakh since early May last year.
round of commander level talks should be convened at the earliest where the two sides should discuss all the remaining issues and seek a mutually acceptable solution. The spokesperson said Jaishankar recalled that both sides had agreed that a prolongation of the existing situation was not in the interest of either side and that it was visibly impacting the relationship in a negative manner. “The external affairs minister emphasized that maintenance of peace and tranquillity in the border areas has been the foundation for the development of ties since 1988. Attempts to change status quo last year, which also disregarded commitments under the 1993 and 1996 agreements, have inevitably affected ties,” Bagchi said.
End protest and come for talks: Tomar to agitating farmers
Narendra Singh Tomar
NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): With a group of farmers reaching Jantar Mantar here to protest against the three new farm laws, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Thursday urged them to leave the path of agitation and come for talks. Tomar said farmers across the country have favoured the three farm laws. Asked about the farmers’ protest at Jantar Mantar, Tomar said, “I want to tell through you (media) that farmers should leave the path of protest and come for dialogue. We are ready for talks if they come with issues in the bills.” “...If they come with their proposal, we are ready to discuss,” he told reporters. Asserting that the government is sensitive towards farmers, the minister said in the last seven years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, major steps have been taken in the agricul-
ture sector, the benefits of which are reaching cultivators across the country. “The three farm bills are also a step in this direction. Farmers across the country have favoured the bills,” he asserted. Tomar, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, had reiterated that the government will remain open to discussions with protesting farmers’ unions to resolve issues over the three agriculture laws passed by Parliament in September last year. “ T h e g ove r n m e n t has been engaged in serious, sensitive and active discussions with the farmers’ unions to resolve the issues. During various rounds of discussions, the government continuously requested the farmers’ unions to discuss the provisions of the farm laws, so that if there is an objection to any provision, the advancement can be made towards resolution of those,” the minister had said.

“It was, therefore, in mutual interest that the two sides work towards early resolution of the remaining issues along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh, while fully abiding by bilateral agreements and protocols,” he said. Bagchi said there was also an understanding in the Jaishankar-Wang meeting that both sides will continue to ensure stability on the ground and neither side will take any unilateral action that could increase tension. India and China have been locked in a military standoff at multiple friction points in eastern Ladakh since early May last year. The two sides completed the withdrawal of troops and weapons from the North and South banks of Pangong lake in February following a series of military and diplomatic talks. There was no visible forward movement in disengagement of troops in the remaining friction points as the Chinese side did not show flexibility in their approach on it at the 11th round of military talks. The 12th round of military talks is likely to take place by July-end or in the first week of August.

Sensex snaps 3-session slide
MUMBAI, JUL 22 (PTI): Market benchmarks roared back to life on Thursday after a three-session losing streak as investors piled into IT, banking and finance stocks amid a bullish trend overseas. A recovering rupee and optimism surrounding the flurry of IPOs added to the momentum, traders said. The 30-share BSE Sensex soared 638.70 points or 1.22 per cent to finish at 52,837.21. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty vaulted 191.95 points or 1.23 per cent to 15,824.05. Tech Mahindra was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, jumping 5.65 per cent, followed by Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Steel, L&T, Infosys and ICICI Bank. On the other hand, H U L wa s t h e b i g ge s t laggard, tumbling 2.27 per cent, even as the FMCG major re por ted a 10.7 per cent increase in its consolidated net profit at Rs 2,100 crore for the June quarter. Asian Paints, Bajaj Auto and M&M were the
other losers, shedding up to 1.73 per cent. Market breadth was in favour of bulls, with 26 of the Sensex 30 stocks closing in the green. According to Milind M u c h h a l a , E x e c u t i ve Director, Julius Baer, Indian markets made a smart pullback suppor ted by the positive global set-up and a decent start to the Q1FY22 earnings season. “Markets are clearly rewarding the stocks/ sectors where the earnings momentum is strong (such
as IT - especially midcap IT, cement, metals) or where growth visibility remains good (such as chemicals, healthcare, etc.). “Moreover, with the f lur r y of IPOs, which are seeing a very healthy response from investors, the related sectors are seeing interest due to benchmark valuations. Also with the headline index remaining steady at elevated levels, the broader market (Midcaps/ Smallcaps) continues to witness a lot of excitement/ participation,” he said.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, said, “Taking cues from firm global markets, domestic market witnessed robust momentum shrugging off concerns over the spread of COVID-19 and FII selling.” “Global markets continued to hold onto g a i n s ow i n g t o s o l i d earnings reports and turned its focus on the European Central Bank’s policy announcement. A confirmation by Fed to continue its supportive policy in the upcoming meet despite rising inflationary pressure will be a key factor in maintaining the direction of the rally,” he added. BSE metal, telecom, capital goods, industrials, power and IT indices rose up to 3.02 per cent, while the FMCG gauge ended in the red. Broader BSE midcap and smallcap indices rose up to 1.52 per cent. Global equities shrugged off recent worries over the Delta variant of the coronavirus, with investors focussing on the upcoming ECB policy announcement.
NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR FRIDAY, JULY 23, 2021
RPP team visits Tzürangkong range along... (From p-1) They said chief minister Neiphiu Rio and his cabinet members should have been in Tzürangkong by now to take stock of the situation. Claiming that situation in the area was very tense and that it could erupt any moment, they demanded a clear cut policy from the State government for resolving the border issue. Warning of violence in the area again, they asked the State government to ensure that there was no bloodshed and further cautioned that the state government should hold solely responsible if anything happens. An RPP leader on the occasion suggested that the State government unilaterally withdraw from the 1972 agreement with Assam and mentioned that, by doing so, the Disturbed Area Belt (DAB) would
automatically get nullified and the government could then directly administer the belt. Explaining that the visit was to express solidarity with people in the area, the team members promised that RPP would monitor the issue and demanded that the State government should also speed up the process of completing the Foothill road which, if completed, would go a long way in easing sufferings of the people. They also questioned the Nagaland government that, when other North-eastern States were so sensitive to their respective border issues, why it was not doing enough on the matter. They claimed that the Assam government was pursuing a proactive policy in border areas and alleged that neutral forces stationed in the area were biased towards Assam.
T h e y u r ge d c iv i l s o c i e t y organisation and NGOs to view the border issue as that of Nagaland, and not just of a particular tribe along the border. Commenting on the formation of RPP, the leaders claimed that the party dreamt of bringing true change to Nagaland, “a change in the system of electing representatives”, and wanting to sow the seeds of accountability and transparency to ensure real democracy in Nagaland. They appealed to the people of Mokokchung to repose their trust on RPP and confirmed that the party would contest the forthcoming Assembly elections in 2023. Asserting that RPP was an opportunity for youngsters to bring the much-needed change, they assured that the party would continue to raise issues that affected people.

(From p-1) The two bodies said Assam police destroyed huts and arecanut plantations besides illegally establishing camp and encroaching more than 2kms of land. NSH and NSSSU pointed out that the 1972 agreement signed between the government of Assam and government of Nagaland agreed to withdraw all its forces to maintain status quo in border belt area. However, they said that the government of Assam had failed to maintain in spirit multiple times. Further, the two two bodies, on behalf of the Northern Sumi public, have appealed to state government to take up necessary measures with government of Assam to withdraw its police personnel that had “illegally established” its camp at Vikuto village area in order to avoid further escalation between the two states.

NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): Twelve BJP MLAs from Maharashtra on Thursday moved the Supreme Court challenging their one-year suspension from the state Legislative Assembly for allegedly misbehaving with the presiding officer. Advocate Abhikalp Pratap Singh said he has filed the petition in the apex court on behalf of these MLAs and they have challenged the resolution passed by the Assembly to suspend these lawmakers for one year. They were suspended on July 5 from the Assembly after the state government had accused them of “misbehaving” with presiding officer Bhaskar Jadhav in the Speaker’s chamber. The 12 suspended members are- Sanjay Kute, Ashish Shelar, Abhimanyu Pawar, Girish Mahajan, Atul Bhatkhalkar, Parag Alavani, Harish Pimpale, Yogesh Sagar, Jay Kumar Rawat, Narayan Kuche, Ram Satpute and Bunty Bhangdia. The motion to suspend these MLAs was moved by state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anil Parab and passed by a voice vote. Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis had termed the allegation as false and said Jadhav’s account of the incident was “one-sided”. “This is a false allegation and an attempt to reduce the numbers of opposition benches, because we exposed the government’s falsehood on the OBC quota in local bodies,” Fadnavis had said, adding that BJP members had not abused the presiding officer. However, Jadhav had sought a probe into the allegation that some Shiv Sena members and he himself made uncharitable remarks, and said he was ready to face any punishment if it was proven true. “Today is a black day for me. Abusive words were directed at me. Some people are saying I made uncharitable remarks. Let there be a probe into it after checking the CCTV footage. If I have used any inappropriate language, I am ready to face any punishment,” Jadhav had said.
NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): The government will seek action against some Opposition MPs who allegedly misbehaved with the treasury bench members in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday after a TMC MP snatched papers from Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and tore those as he was about to make a statement on the alleged snooping row. Government sources said some Opposition MPs “misbehaved” with the treasury bench members, including a minister, even after the House was adjourned. “We are approaching the Rajya Sabha chairman seeking action against them as their behaviour is a blow to parliamentary decorum,” a Union minister, who did not wish to be named, said. Tr i n a m o o l C o n g r e s s ( T M C ) M P S h a n t a nu S e n snatched papers from Vaishnaw after TMC, Congress and other opposition party members, who had earlier forced two adjournments of the proceedings in the Rajya Sabha, rushed into the well of the House as the minister was called to make a statement on the Pegasus snooping row. Government sources said Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal and his deputy Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi reached out to the Opposition members and assured them that the minister will reply to their queries after he makes his statement, but in vain.

Posters such as “Save the country, Save the farmer” were also waved by opposition members. The Question Hour barely continued for 12 minutes before Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House till 12 noon. Birla said members are elected to raise issues related to the common man and not raise slogans and wave placards inside the House. The speaker also said he would allow discussions on all the issues the opposition members were raising through slogans and placards. As the House reassembled at 12 noon, Bhartruhari Mahtab who was in the Chair asked the protesting MPs to go back to their seats and engage in discussion. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the government was ready to discuss any topic the opposition wanted.
“The Rajya Sabha had a discussion on Covid... We are ready for discussion on whatever topic you want... Question Hour is a right of every member,” Joshi said. Mahtab said the government is agreeable to discussion on any topic and the Business Advisory Committee can finalise the subject. As the uproar continued, Mahtab adjourned the House till 2 pm. Similar scenes were witnessed at 2 pm also and the Chair adjourned the proceedings till 4 PM. The uproar continued when the House reassembled at 4 pm even as Mahtab, who was in the Chair, asked the protesting members to go back to their seats. However, the opposition members did not relent, forcing the Chair to adjourn the House proceedings for the day.

NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): Lok Sabha proceedings were repeatedly adjourned on Thursday as opposition members raised slogans and waved placards against the three agriculture laws and the alleged snooping using Israeli spyware Pegasus. While Zero Hour could not be taken up, only one question could be asked during the Question Hour as opposition members repeatedly trooped into the Well of the House and raised slogans. Amid the din, the Essential Defence Services Bill and the Inland Vessels Bill were introduced in the lower house. Since Monday, when the Monsoon Session began, Lok Sabha proceedings have been marred by protests of opposition parties on a variety of issues, including farmers, fuel price hike, economy and the Pegasus row. As soon as the House assembled for the day, members from various opposition parties raised slogans slamming the government over the three agriculture laws. They later trooped into the Well of the House holding placards and raising slogans. Some of the placards were in Gurmukhi. While members of the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal targeted the government on the farmers’ issue, TMC members gathered near the Speaker’s podium raising the Pegasus snooping issue. They shouted slogans seeking answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

snooping story “concocted, IT dept raids Dainik Bhaskar, Bharat Samachar Pegasus fabricated, evidence-less”: BJP GOVERNMENT RESPONDS TO CRITICISM SAYING ‘NO INTERFERENCE’
NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): The Income Tax Department on Thursday conducted raids across several states against prominent media group Dainik Bhaskar as well as Uttar Pradesh-based TV channel Bharat Samachar for alleged tax evasion, drawing a sharp response from several quarters, sources said. The raids against the multi-media Dainik Bhaskar group -- which has presence in 12 states and runs newspapers as well as operates radio stations, web portals and mobile phone apps -- were taking place in 30 locations, including Bhopal, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Noida, sources said. The searches started around 5.30 am and were going on till evening. “The group is also involved in textiles and mining businesses and the department is also looking into these transactions,” an official said on condition of anonymity. There was no official word from the Income Tax Department or its policymaking body, the Central

Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), on the searches targeting the promoters and staffers of Dainik Bhaskar, and Bharat Samachar. The issue was raised in the Rajya Sabha. It also came in for wide condemnation from several leaders, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Rajasthan’s Ashok Gehlot and Delhi’s Arvind Kejriwal. “Agencies are doing
their own work and there is no interference in them.” Union minister Anurag Thakur said in response to the criticism “… one should take complete information and sometimes many issues come up that are far from truth...,” he said, replying to a question on the Congress’ allegation that the raids were intended to throttle the voice of democracy. Both Dainik Bhaskar and
Bharat Samachar have been critical of the COVID-19 management in the country and done numerous stories highlighting the failings of authorities and the distress of people during the second wave of the pandemic. Giving details of the searches, sources said the premises of Bharat Samachar and its promoters and staffers were raided in Lucknow. Bharat Samachar TV said on its official Twitter handle that searches are being conducted at the “house of its Editor-in-chief Brajesh Mishra, state head Virendra Singh, houses of some employees and the channel office”. Tax sleuths also raided some premises linked to BJP MLA from Uttar Pradesh’s Harraiya assembly seat Ajay Singh and his associates. It was, however, not immediately clear if the raids were connected to the media groups. In Bhopal, personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force and the Madhya Pradesh police were seen providing security to tax officials searching
the residential premises of Dainik Bhaskar’s promoters. The group brings out 65 editions of newspapers and 211 sub-editions in Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi, according to information provided on the website of its parent company D B Corp Ltd. It also operates 30 radio stations in seven states and has online presence with six web portals and four mobile phone apps. Dainik Bhaskar posted a message on its website saying the government was scared of its true journalism. From bodies in the Ganga to Corona deaths, the group that brought the real numbers in front of the country is being raided by the government, it said in a message in Hindi. “I am independent because I am Bhaskar, Only the readers’ will matters in Bhaskar”, it added. The group said the raids were carried out at the homes of many staffers. The mobile phones of those in office were seized and they were not being allowed to go out, it said.
Amarinder Singh seeks Union minister’s 5 B’deshis apprehended by BSF resignation for calling farmers ‘mawali’ incidents of alleged violence during their protests. While the assault on the journalist at Jantar Mantar where the farmers are protesting the new agriculture laws was deplorable and action should be taken against the guilty, the Union minister’s reaction was totally uncalled for and provocative, said the chief minister. Lekhi had no right to “defame” the farmers in such a manner, he said. The BJP had no right to condemn the farmers in such an outrageous manner over the incident, he added.

KOLKATA, JUL 22 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday claimed that the snooping on Supreme Court judges, journalists and political leaders among others using the Pegasus spyware, news of which broke earlier this week, was “worse than the Watergate scandal” which broke in the US during the NIxon presidency. Banerjee likened the scandal which allegedly involved using a spyware developed by a Israeli firm to infect the mobile phones of hundreds of Indians in a bid to spy on them to the imposition of a “super-emergency in the country”. The chief minister claimed that all impartial institutions have been politicised by the BJP-led Government. “Pegasus is worse than Watergate scandal; it is super emergency,” Banerjee told a press conference at the state secretariat here. “They (BJP leadership) don’t trust even their own officers and ministers,” she said, adding “I have heard they tapped the phones of several RSS people”. The chief minister recently managed to win a high voltage electoral battle to elect the state legislature after a bitter campaign where she was pitted against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

alleged “brazen” attempts to “stifle” all voices of dissent and protest, the fact that it had failed to break the spirit of the farmers was clearly rankling, said Amarinder Singh in an official statement. that it never said that the recently leaked phone numbers were specifically a list of numbers targeted by Pegasus spyware. Lekhi told reporters that 10 countries have been named as places where this spyware was used and hit out at opposition parties, including the Congress and TMC, suggesting that rival parties other countries have not behaved the way they have in India. Opposition par ties have stalled proceedings in Parliament, alleging the Modi government’s involvement in the alleged snooping, following reports that nearly 300 mobile phone numbers including of journalists, activists, opposition leaders and even two ministers from India figured in this list of potential snooping targets by NSO which sells its Pegasus spyware only to “vetted” governments and gover nment agencies. She claimed, “This is not a story. This is a nonstarter across the globe be-
cause based on a concocted, fabricated, evidence-less story, nobody does story. Because that story itself calls for forgery and defamation. Leaked data is an offence and that leads to further complications for people who base their stories on leaked data. it only happens in India.” “The published story is based on a list of numbers available in any directory. Second, Amnesty International has denied this. The company (NSO) which manufactures Pegasus has said that these claims are uncorroborated and do not tally with their customer base,” she said. Claiming that the Pegasus row is linked to the report of a parliamentary committee, which was headed by her and examined the Personal Data Protection Bill, she said it has been submitted to the Lok Sabha Speaker and is ready to be adopted by Parliament. “Data protection is going to become the law of the and. This is directly related to that. This is to undermine Indian institutions that such kinds of stories are being floated,” she said. NSO, the Israeli firm behind the spyware, has denied such a list, Amnesty International has “denied” this and yet opposition is disrupting Parliament, she said, claiming that such a narrative is built repeatedly to damage India.

CHANDIGARH, JUL 22 (PTI): Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday demanded immediate resignation of Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi for dubbing the farmers protesting the Centre’s three farm laws as “mawali”. NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): The BJP on Thursday claimed that the story on the alleged snooping through Israeli spyware Pegasus is “concocted, fabricated and evidence-less” and that the news reports based on it call for “defamation”. Union minister and BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi cited reports to claim that Amnesty International, the human rights group associated with Pegasus Project, has denied the existence of a list of potential targets of the alleged snooping. Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters here, she alleged that the “fake” list is like a collection of mobile numbers drawn from yellow pages and those have been used for “yellow journalism”. She was referring to news reports about the suspected snooping of people, including politicians and journalists, in India and several countries. Amnesty International, however, said in a statement that it “categorically stands” by the findings of the Pegasus Project and asserted that the data is irrefutably linked to potential targets of Israel-based NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware. The comments by Amnesty International came after some media reports quoting a few Israeli journalists said that the human rights group has claimed

NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (IANS): Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday slammed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath saying people have the right to their views and abusing power to intimidate them is a “heinous crime”. She also reminded the Chief Minister that the property on which he is sitting can be confiscated by the people. In a series of tweets in Hindi, Priyanka Gandhi, who is in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Congress said, “It is a constitutional right to raise your voice, to

The resolution pointed out that racism impacts where a person lives, learns, works, worships and plays, creating inequities in access to a range of social and economic benefits, such as housing, education, wealth and employment, often referred to as social determinants of health. “This nation and the states and municipalities within have been designed to systematically disadvantage underrepresented racial and ethnic groups thereby creating health disparities that have persisted even after the Civil Rights Movement following the
abolition of slavery,” the resolution said, noting that the Covid-19 pandemic has shown how pre-existing structural inequities created heavier burdens of disease, death and social consequences in communities of color in Utah. Citing data from the Utah Department of Health, the resolution said odds of infection were three times more likely in areas where there are high percentages of Latino and non-white residents. “The Latino communities account for 14.2 per cent of Utah’s population, but 40 per cent of the state’s Covid-19 cases.

JOHANNESBURG, JUL 22 (PTI): Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the traditional prime minister of the Zulu nation, has made an impassioned plea for an end to anti-Indian sentiment that has seen rising tensions between Indian-origin South Africans and their Black compatriots. The tensions have been particularly high in the sprawling Indian township of Phoenix, north of Durban, and residents of three surrounding Black areas following the deaths of 22 people in Phoenix during the riots and looting last week by vigilante groups trying to protect their businesses and homes from looters. The unrest started with protests after the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma on July 7, but rapidly degenerated into mass mob looting and arson allegedly fuelled by poverty and unemployment. divisions. However, it has failed to carry out its duties completely and has been at the receiving end of insurgent attacks, the most deadly being the attack carried out in Ormara on Oct 15, 2020 when 14 Pakistan security personnel were dragged out of a bus and killed by Balochi militants. Chinese workers and engineers, wherever they work within Pakistan, are guarded 24x7 by armed guards, making them hostage to the Pakistan army. “This has led to a number of near-riot situations where fistfights have turned ugly, especially when it re-
in Xinjiang, there is huge likelihood of revolts and riots breaking out in the besieged province, a stark rerun of 2009. The weapons adorning the persons of the Chinese engineers are mostlikely bought off the shelf from the Haqqanis. “The Chinese workers are not known for their compassionate behaviour towards other nationalities and this has been evident from their actions in large parts of Africa as well as Pakistan, where they have assaulted Pakistani soldiers and gotten away with it,” the source said. It is only a matter of time when they fire their bullets in anger, causing mass casualties, the source said. Further, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) even tried to deflect the anger by attempting to run hashtags on Twitter such as #CPECMakingProgress, but all in vain as the entire Belt and Road Initiative’s pivot in South Asia threatens to implode in Pakistan, creating conditions for chaos and anarchy.

Not only this, the maritime force created by the name of Task Force 88 has been given two frigates, which again do not fit this scheme. The July 14 bomb blast is not the first attack on the Chinese nationals in Pakistan, whose work ethics and culture, apart from the rapacious nature of the Chinese CPEC projects, have upset the locals. Given the current situation in Afghanistan, even the western borders of Pakistan have become active, with groups like ISIS and TTP rampaging against Pakistani troops. After the deadly attack on a bus carrying Chinese engineers to the Dasu dam site in Upper Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on July 14, which killed nine Chinese nationals, the Pakistani establishment’s failure to protect the Chinese workers has been exposed. A massive sum of Chinese money has been pumped in to create, train and equip two Special Security Divisions (SSDs) -- the 34 and 44 Light Infantry Divisions -- with 15,000 troops each. While the 34 Light Division was created in September 2016, the 44 Light Division was developed in 2020. The Pakistan army had asked for and received money for equipping these

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR FRIDAY, JULY 23, 2021
Jailed Zuma allowed to attend brother’s funeral
Jacob Zuma
JOHANNESBURG, JUL 22 (PTI): Jailed former South African president Jacob Zuma was granted compassionate leave by prison authorities on Thursday to attend his brother’s funeral. Zuma arrived at his late brother Michael Zuma’s residence under security escort to attend the latter’s funeral. Michael died on Sunday after battling an undisclosed illness for seven years. He was the spokesman for the family during his elder brother’s two terms of office as president of the country. Zuma, 79, has been incarcerated at an Estcourt correctional facility since July 7 when he started a 15-month contempt of court prison sentence imposed on him by the country’s apex court. Zuma was jailed after he refused repeatedly to re-
turn to the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture. In a statement on Thursday morning, Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed that the permission was granted under section 44 (1)(a) of the Correctional Services Act. Provisions of the Act include consideration of the activity that a prisoner wished to attend, how long he should be temporarily released and the security risks involved as he still needed to be protected by the Department. “A sentenced offender who is granted permission to leave a correctional centre remains a sentenced offender even while temporarily outside. The permission granted to Mr Zuma is for July 22, 2021. “As a short-term, low-
risk classified inmate, Mr Zuma’s application for compassionate leave was processed and approved following the correctional services prescripts,” Nxumalo said. Nxumalo said Zuma did not have to wear the standard orange overalls of the Department while he was outside. Zuma was whisked to Michael’s home under great secrecy to avoid crowds gathering again as the country recovers from the widespread looting and arson that wracked the country last week in the wake of his imprisonment. The protests about this rapidly devolved into unprecedented looting and violence, with thousands of people looting ceilings and counters from stores and warehouses and burning trucks on arterial transport routes. President Cyril Ramaphosa later called the incidents “a failed insurrection” in an organised way. On Thursday, Zuma was escorted by teams from the department’s security division, who were activated for the “exercise’’ as early as last Sunday, a report published by Mail & Guardian, a local daily of South Africa, reported.

Death toll from heavy rains in China reaches 33
Aerial image show devastation in Chinese province.
BEIJING, JUL 22 (IANS): The death toll from torrential rains in central China’s Henan province increased to 33 on Thursday, while eight people still remain missing and more than 3 million others affected, local authorities confirmed. A total of 376,000 local residents have been relocated, said the provincial emergency management department. Rainwater has damaged more than 215,200 hectares of crops, causing a direct economic loss of about 1.22 billion yuan ($188 million), reports Xinhua news agency. The Henan provincial meteorological observatory activated the highest level of rainstorm alert at 11 a.m. Thursday, as rainfall is expected to continue for the next three hours in a number of cities including Anyang, Hebi, Xinxiang and Jiaozuo. The local accumulat-
ed precipitation is likely to exceed 100 mm, according to the forecasts. Downpours also lashed the city of Huixian between 8 a.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Thursday with precipitation reaching 400 mm. Local authorities have mobilised 39,583 rescuers for disaster relief, and 37,953 people have so far been evacuated in Huixian. Despite the heavy rain in the region, traffic has gradually resumed in the province. Zhengzhou Xinzheng Inter national Air por t scheduled 397 flights on Thursday, 219 inbound and 178 outbound, an increase of 315 flights from the previous day. Meanwhile, 204 of Henan’s 403 highway toll stations have opened, while 193 have partially opened with traffic control and six others remain closed due to water-logging and flood control.

Taliban has gained strategic momentum: Top US General WASHINGTON/NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (IANS): The Taliban now controls a total of 212, or roughly half of Afghanistan’s 419 district centres, a top US General said, adding that the insurgents appear to have gained “strategic momentum” since the withdrawal of American troops. “Strategic momentum appears to be sort of with the Taliban,” General Mark Milley, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at a press conference at the Pentagon on Wednesday. “We’re going to find out, the levels of violence, does it go up, does it stay the same, there’s the possibility of negotiated outcome still out there, there’s the possibility of a Taliban takeover (and) any other number of scenarios,” Milley said. He still expressed confidence in the ability of Afghan forces to fend off a Taliban takeover of the country. “The two most important combat multipliers, actually, is will and leadership. And this is going to be a test now of the will and leadership of the Afghan people, the Afghan Security Forces and the government
Gen. Mark Milley
of Afghanistan. “I don’t think the end game is yet written. A negative outcome, a Taliban automatic takeover, is not a foregone conclusion,” he added. While the militants are yet to capture any of the country’s 34 provincial capitals, they are pressuring about half of them, said Milley. Afghan security forces are consolidating their positions to protect those major urban centres including Kabul, he said. “What they’re trying to do is isolate the major population centres. They’re trying to do the same thing to Kabul.” As of Wednesday, the Taliban now controls about 212 of Afghanistan’s 419
district centres, Milley said, adding that it was a significant jump from the 81 district centres a month ago. The top US General attributed some of the Taliban’s recent gains to Afghan forces consolidating in order to protect population centre, The Hill news website said in a report. “Part of this is they’re giving up district centres in order to consolidate their forces because they’re taking an approach to protect the population,” Milley said. “And most of the population lives in the provincial capitals and the capital city of Kabul. So they are right now, as we speak, adjusting forces to consolidate into the provincial capitals and Kabul.”
14 killed, 26 injured in rainrelated incidents in Pakistan P E S H AWA R , J U L 2 2 (PTI): At least 14 people were killed and 26 others injured in rain-related incidents in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the last 24 hours, officials said on Thursday. The Provincial Disasters Management Authority (PDMA) said that incessant monsoon rain stuck various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and inundated low lying areas in the province’s Dera Ismail Khan, Hazara and Malakand divisions and resulted in the complete
damage of four houses and partial damage of 21 others. “Houses were damaged due to the continuous monsoon rain that struck Khyber Pakhtunkhwa resulting in the death of 14 people and injuries to 26 others in the last one day,” a senior official from the PDMA said. The respective district administrations in the province have geared up relief and rescue activities in areas affected by the monsoon rains and issued necessary travel advisory for the tourists, the official said.

ndian amateur photographer Sharan Shetty on Thursday won ‘First Place Photographer of the Year’ at the annual iPhone Photography Awards (IPPAWARDS) for his image titled ‘Bonding, where a man and his horse commune in an empty landscape, offering each other comfort and soft words. Shetty started off by clicking landscapes and later moved to photographing portraits. “Humans, their behaviour, culture and connection with nature are what have been inspiring me lately. The winning photograph is close to my heart and I hoped it would at least get a mention somewhere. It is a proud moment for me,” Shetty told IANS. Regarding his winning photo that was shot on iPhone X in Baku, Azerbaijan, he said: “What caught my attention was the man’s con-

The connection between a man and his best friend was so apparent”. “It looked like they were supporting and consoling each other. I chose this particular photo because it brings out the bond shared by both so beautifully. Hence the name ‘Bonding,’” he added. The iPhone Photography Awards is the first and the longest running iPhone photography competition since 2007. “I have never taken part in any completion in the past, but being a die-hard fan of Apple and IPhone, I decided to submit my images. I am truly grateful to IPPA for choosing this photograph as a winner,” Shetty said. From thousands of photographers from all over the world, the Grand

TOKYO, JUL 22 (AP): After images of Olympic soccer players taking a knee were excluded from official highlight reels and social media channels, the IOC said Thursday that kneeling protests will be shown in the future. P l aye r s f r o m f ive women’s soccer teams kneeled in support of racial justice Wednesday, the first day it was allowed at the Olympic Games after a ban lasting decades. The concession under Olympic Charter Rule 50, which has long prohibited any athlete protest inside event venues, was finally allowed this month by the Inter national Olympic Committee. The IOC has tried to reconcile enforcing the rule while recognizing, and sometimes celebrating, the iconic image of American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos each raising a black-gloved fist on the medal podium at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. the United States, Sweden and New Zealand players in later kickoffs. The Australia team posed with a flag of Australia’s indigenous people. Those images were excluded from the official Tokyo Olympic highlights package provided by the IOC to media including The Associated Press that could not broadcast the games live. Official Olympic social media channels also did not include pictures of the athlete activism. “The IOC is covering the Games on its owned and
operated platforms and such moments will be included as well,” the Olympic body said Thursday in an apparent change of policy. The IOC said hundreds of millions of viewers could have seen the footage watching networks that have official broadcast rights and “can use it as they deem fit.” The decades-long ban on all demonstrations was eased by the IOC three weeks ago when it was clear some athletes — especially in soccer and track and field — would express opinions on the field in Japan.

Olympics: Brazil beat Germany 4-2
TOKYO, JUL 22 (IANS): Forward Richarlison scored the first hat-trick in the men’s football event at the Tokyo Olympics as defending champions Brazil defeated 2016 finalists Germany 4-2 at the International Stadium, Yokohama, on Thursday. Richarlison scored his first goal of the day in the seventh minute. He saw his first shot saved by goalkeeper Florian Mueller. But the ball rebounded perfectly for the striker and he made no mistake the second time around, slotting past Mueller to give Brazil the lead. The Everton forward’s second goal came in the 22nd minute with a header past Mueller from a delightful cross by Guilherme Arana. The hat-trick came in the 30th minute as Richarlison turned on his right and curled a strike past Mueller into the far corner. Richarlison’s strikes helped Brazil, the 2016 Rio Olympics gold-medalists, lead 3-0 at half-time. In a match that is repeat of the final of the 2016 Rio Olympics, Germany pulled one back in the second half with a superb strike from Nadiem Amiri. they thenmade it 2-3 despite

Meanwhile in a Group A clash at the Tokyo Stadium, despite their dominance, a hosts Japan saw a wave of offense upset by a poor finish and a strong performance by the South African goalkeeper, until Real Madrid youngster Takefusa Kubo’s strike inside the box found the net after hitting the far post. Several members of South Africa’s football team, including players, have tested positive for Covid-19, forcing the team
into observing quarantine. Head coach David Notoane told the post-match press conference that the team has been affected but he was proud of the performance of the team and is looking forward to the next game, reports Xinhua. In another Group A match, French defenders were unable to stop the skillful Mexicans by conceding four goals in the second half, only to make the score 4-1 through a penalty kick by captain Andre-Pierre Gignac. I n G r o u p C, t i t l e favourite Spain encountered a staunch defense from Egypt as the match ended in
a goalless draw. Even worse for the European side was an early exit of Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos in the first half due to injury. In a later match of Group C, Australia shocked 10-man Argentina 2-0. In Group B, Chris Wood’s lone goal in the second half was enough to propel New Zealand to a 1-0 win over South Korea, while Romania beat Honduras 1-0, with the only goal of the game coming in the first half through an own goal. In another Group D match, AC Milan player Franck Kessie scored a winner and Cote d’Ivoire beat Saudi Arabia 2-1.

Kobayashi’s axing follows the resignation of opening ceremony music composer Keigo Oyamada, who had a d m i t t e d t o b u l ly i n g children with disabilities years ago. “It came to light that during a past performance, [Kobayashi] used language that mocked a tragic fact of history,” Tokyo 2020 O ly m p i c c h i e f S e i k o Hashimoto told the media. “The organising committee has decided to relieve Kobayashi of his post,” she added. In a statement, Kobayashi has apologised for the skit in which he and a fellow comedian pretended to be famous children’s TV entertainers. While performing an activity, Kobayashi called some paper doll cutouts as “the ones from that time you said ‘let’s play the Holocaust’”. The audience had laughed at it.

Unfortunately, we did not avoid sports tragedies, I am extremely sorry,” said Martin Doktor, sports director of the Czech team. The Czech Olympic committee launched an investigation into the spread of the disease on a charter flight to Tokyo.
The investigation will focus on whether safety measures against the spread of COVID-19 before, during and after the charter flight were observed and whether some individuals “neglected their duties during the trip”. TOKYO, JUL 22 (AP): Novak Djokovic knows how close he is. Not just to creating history and becoming the first man to achieve a Golden Slam by winning all four major tennis tournaments and an Olympic singles gold medal in the same year. S u r e, t h a t ’s o n Djokovic’s mind as he enters the Olympic tournament starting Saturday. But it’s the bigger end product that would be the result of such an achievement that is weighing most heavily on him — surpassing Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to be considered the greatest tennis player ever. The goal is so great t h a t D j o k ov i c d o e s n’t even want to consider the consequences. “I don’t want to be part of the debate. I don’t want to be compared to anybody,” the top-ranked Serb said Thursday. “It’s still a very long way to a potential historic achievement. “I know that there is a lot of things on the line. on the line. I’m privileged and motivated to be in this position. I’ve worked very hard to be here. … But let’s talk about history if everything goes great here,” Djokovic added. “Right now all focus goes to the next challenge.” In Serbia, the debate is already over. Olympic committee chief of mission Natasa Ja nk ov i c i n t r o d u c e d Djokovic at the team’s news conference as “the most successful tennis player ever.” B y w i n n i n g
Wimbledon this month, Djokovic matched Federer and Nadal with his 20th Grand Slam title — having opened the year by capturing the Australian and French Opens. He is the only one of them to have won each Slam twice. He is the only one to hold all four major titles simultaneously, something he did over the end of 2015 and start of 2016. The only tennis player to achieve a Golden Slam was Steffi Graf in 1988. “I’m not in touch with Steffi, but if you can connect her, I would be delighted
to ask her how she did it,” Djokovic said, recalling how he briefly worked with Graf ’s husband, Andre Agassi. “When I was thinking about her (Golden Slam) I didn’t think that would be achievable. But right now it seems more and more realistic for me. Of course that’s one of the goals and dreams.” Making matters more straightforward for Djokovic is that neither Federer nor Nadal are playing in Tokyo. B u t t ha t a l s o wa s the case at last year’s U.S. Open, where Djokovic was disqualified for unintentionally hitting a line judge in the throat with a ball. “I have not experienced too many big tournaments in the past 15 years without Roger and Rafa playing,” Djokovic said. “So it’s a little bit strange, to be honest, because I’m used to seeing at least one of them.” Djokovic will open against No. 139 Hugo Dellien of Bolivia on the hard courts of the Ariake Tennis Park.
India denied entry into ITF World Junior Finals
NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): The Indian team has been denied entry into the upcoming ITF World Junior Tennis Finals in Prostejov as India has been classified as ‘extreme risk’ nation in COVID times. The Czech Republic Embassy here has refused to issue visas to the players. The All India Tennis Association (AITA) earlier this month named a threemember Under-14 boys team comprising of Rethin Pranav RS, Kriish Ajay Tyagi and Tejas Ahuja for the prestigious tournament, scheduled to be held from August 2 to 7. The AITA reached
out to the Sports Ministry on July 17, seeking intervention in the matter and the SAI subsequently approached the External Affairs Ministry on July 19. But the matter remained unresolved. “It’s unfortunate. The boys needed exposure. If they had to deny us visas, why did the ITF enter our team in the tournament,” s a i d A I TA s e c r e t a r y General Anil Dhupar. India reeled under a horrific second wave of coronavirus but the situation has improved now, prompting the central and state and governments to re-open the economy.
