Omicron thrice more transmissible than Delta
States/UTs asked to ‘activate’ war rooms, emergency Op centres
NEW DELHI, DEC 21 (PTI): Asserting that the Omicron variant is at least thrice more transmissible than Delta, the Centre Tuesday asked states and union territories to "activate" war rooms, keep analyzing even small trends and surges and keep taking strict and prompt containment action at district and local levels. In a letter to the states and union territories (UTs), Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan advised implementing strategic interventions for containment like imposition of night curfew, strict regulation of large gatherings, curtailing numbers in marriages and funerals besides increasing testing and surveillance. The letter highlighted measures that need to be taken in view of initial signs of surge in cases of CO-

VID-19 as well as increased detection of Omicron in different parts of the country. "At the district level there should be constant review of emerging data regarding the population affected by COVID-19, geographical spread, hospital infrastructure and its utilization, manpower, notifying containment zones, enforcement of perimeter of containment zones etc. In case of all new clusters of Covid positive cases, prompt notification of "containment zones", "buffer zones" should be done, strict perimeter control of con-
tainment zone according to extant guidelines must be ensured. All cluster samples must be sent to INSACOG Labs for Genome Sequencing without delay, Bhushan underlined. Listing some of the strategic areas of intervention focusing on containment, test, track, surveillance, clinical management to be taken, Bhushan asked states and UTs to ensure door to door case search, testing of all SARI/ILI and vulnerable/co-morbid people and right proportion of RT PCR tests in total tests being conducted daily.
Contact tracing of all Covid positive persons and utilizing the access to "AIR SUVIDHA Portal by state surveillance officers and district surveillance officers to monitor the international passengers who have arrived in their states and districts was also stressed. States and UTs have been asked to increase bed capacity, other logistics like ambulances, mechanism for seamless shifting of patients, availability and operational readiness of oxygen equipment, buffer stock of drugs to be ensured by prompt utilization of emergency covid response package (ECRP-II) funds released by Centre and other available resources etc. The existing National Clinical Management Protocol remains unchanged for Omicron, the letter stated. The states and UTs have been asked to ensure 100 per cent coverage of left out first and second dose eligible beneficiaries in an accelerated manner. They have also been asked to ensure advance engagement
Parl clears electoral reforms bill after RS approval
A scene inside Rajya Sabha during the Winter Session of Parliament in Delhi on Tuesday. (RSTV/PTI)
NEW DELHI, DEC 21 (PTI): A Bill to link electoral roll data with the Aadhaar ecosystem was passed by Parliament on Tuesday with the Rajya Sabha approving it amid a walkout by the Opposition and high drama when Derek O’Brien flung a rulebook at the reporters' table after which the TMC MP was suspended from the House for “'unruly behaviour'”.
Rejecting the opposition criticism of the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 that seeks to weed out fake voters from electoral rolls, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said in our democracy, the electoral process should be cleansed and that can happen only if the electoral rolls are clean. The bill, which was approved by voice vote, was cleared by Lok Sabha on Monday.
Calling the Electoral reforms bill as “very good” and a “revolutionary” step, Rijiju also said the linking of electoral rolls to the Aadhaar number is only voluntary and not compulsory, adding it will help end fake and bogus voting and make the electoral process credible. Sources in the government, meanwhile, said the move would solve a “major problem” of multiple enrolment of a person at different places and help in “cleaning” the voters’ list to a great extent. T h e g o ve r n m e n t sources said the Bill incorporates various electoral reforms which have been discussed for a long time, and shared a 2018 statement of the Election Commission (EC) fol-
lowing a meeting of all recognised national and regional parties on various electoral reforms. The Bill seeks to allow electoral registration officers to seek Aadhaar number of people who want to register as voters “for the purpose of establishing the identity”. The Bill was passed after an hour-long discussion with members of several parties supporting the bill though some concerns were voiced. The discussion continued amid protests by opposition members who were in the well throughout raising slogans. Members of the Congress, TMC, CPI-M, CPI, DMK, RJD, Samajwadi Party (SP), AAP and NCP walked out from the House in protest.

minister and home minister were answerable to the people of Nagaland. “They cannot run away from their responsibilities. They should answer whether troops from 21 Para had come with their knowledge. If yes, why? If not, why criminal procedure should not be initiated against them? They cannot take cover under AFSPA. I have already explained earlier,” he specified. Reiterating that people demanded justice, Therie demanded that the culprits must be booked as per law. But, instead of bringing the criminals to book, he observed that the Assembly surprisingly wanted them to apologise and escape from the crime of committing a massacre. He said the resolution was trying to give the impression that the State was innocent and that the army had conducted the operation without authority from the
State government. But, if it was so, then the army had violated the constitution and committed a crime against humanity, he pointed out. And if not, then the army should point out who was responsible, he demanded. Therie insisted that as constitutional provisions the army had no authority to just come from another State and indiscriminately shoot and kill innocent and peaceful citizens. “We are sorry for the people. Given an opportunity, Congress will deliver justice,” he declared. It may be recalled that the NPCC had written to the President of India with a three-point charter of demands, which include constitution of an all-party parliamentary committee to investigate Oting massacre, deliver justice by arresting the culprits and implement political solution under President’s Rule to avoid bias and ill-will.

NPCC attacks Assembly resolution, says people want justice not apology DIMAPUR, DEC 21 (NPN): Condemning the Assembly resolution which called for an “apology” from the appropriate authority…”, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) asserted that the people wanted justice not apology. NPCC president K Therie in a press release regretted that the entire resolution on Monday was demeaned by the call for apology. He said that the call for apology over a massacre was an insult to the bereaved families, their villages, the community and to the voice of people crying for justice. Maintaining that the Assembly had shamed Naga brave hearts, Therie asserted that apology over a massacre was not acceptable, adding that killings and apologies could not be made a precedence. Towards justice, he said the resolution was blunt and specified that the chief

At the meeting, they said the aggrieved employees expressed dismay that the responsible authority did not assure any deadline to clear the pending salary. The aggrieved employees have, therefore, resolved that once it becomes a legal matter, the authority would be held liable for attorney's fee and court cost related to the law suit. They also said that the authority would also be held liable to pay all the accrued interest as required legally. It was also resolved that no employees would “take the situation to get upper hand for personal gain that might obstruct from achieving the intended purpose.”
DIMAPUR, DEC 21 (NPN): Taking serious note of major power disruptions caused by unmindful felling of trees on the Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission lines, the power department has advised public to avoid felling trees that were likely to fall over the transmission lines. In a press note, chief engineer (T&G) Er. Penrithung Yanthan stated that the latest incident of power disruptions occurred on one of the 66kV EHV transmission lines on December 9, which caused total black-
out to Kiphire and Phek districts for two days. Er. Yanthan stated that such power interruptions, which were non-technical and were avoidable, added up extra workload for the department, which was struggling with the shortage of staff. Depending on the topography of the area of the incident, he said some of the cases even take days and weeks to restore, causing immense hardship to the public as well as the department. CE also said that snapping of the power lines due to felling of trees not only

DIMAPUR, DEC 21 (NPN): Reacting to the statement issued by NSCN (R) under Wangtin Naga and P. Tikhak, the Akato Chophi-led NSCN (R) maintained that it did not want to involve in cheap gimmicks and stoop low by pointing fingers at esteemed Naga platforms, and thereby avoid amusing scenes in public domain. In a press note issued by NSCN/GPRN, it said that though armed with proof (including audios/ visuals/phone recordings/
documents etc), it did not want to “scatter the dirty litters in the public area by picking names”. NSCN/ GPRN however said that if it was constantly hit below the belt, it would be constrained to do so. “Any person(s) who wants to check these documents are welcome to do so,” it added. Questioning Wangtin/ Tikhak camp (WTC) over “ludicrous and ridiculous” allegation with a personal vendetta against its president Akato Chophi, NSCN pointed out that its consti-
tution clearly mentioned that a two-third majority could impeach a collective leader. Hence, the claim of impeachment of Akato by 15/16 people at the meeting at Thilixu was “obnoxious and a huge embarrassment” to themselves, it added. Referring to the claim by the “so called spokesperson” in the media that Akato Chophi had only 15/16 arms, the group asked then why the question of 46 arms cropped up? It also asked where was its armoury/arsenal
and what types of weapons, how many short hands, or AKs or, MQs, M-16, M4s M22s, HKs, LMGs, etc, as claimed. It therefore asked WTC to specify the details, and not level wild accusations “if you consider yourselves as leaders”. NSCN said that some few weapons (9/10) that were displayed in the media belonged to Tikhak, “who brought it through cross-border exchange from Arunachal, since he was denied TNO (Take Note Of) (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C

In this regard, the RTI applicant wrote a letter to the chief engineer and appellate authority, Kohima demanding action against those found guilty for allegedly misusing funds within three days from the date of receiving the letter, however, they said that even after the expiry of the deadline, the department failed to take action and did not consider the issue on priority. The union has, therefore warned that if the department did not consider their issue on priority and failed to take punitive action against erring officers, it would “not be silent mute spectator” but fight tooth and nail till justice was delivered.

Mamata prays at Kamakhya TMC CELEBRATES KMC POLL TRIUMPH IN TRIPURA
Mamata Banerjee at the famous Maa Kamakhya temple in Guwahati. GUWAHATI/AGARTALA, DEC 21 (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday offered prayers at the famous Maa Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, while her party in Tripura celebrated Trinamool’s landslide victory in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections. After visiting the Kamakhya temple in the city’s Maligaon area, Banerjee, who was accompanied by her close relatives, left Guwahati for Kolkata. The Trinamool chief was received in Guwahati by the party’s Rajya Sabha MP, Sushmita Dev. “I welcome my leader Chief Minister of West Bengal and Chairperson of
AITC to Assam. She is here to offer her prayers to Maa Kamakhya and seek her blessings,” Dev, who hails from Silchar and is presently leading the Trinamool in Tripura, said in a tweet. Recently, 12 Congress MLAs from neighbouring Meghalaya led by former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had joined the Trinamool. The ruling party of West Bengal is making all efforts to make inroads in BJP-ruled Tripura. Meanwhile in Tripura, the Trinamool celebrated the party’s resounding victory in the KMC polls by distributing sweets among the leaders, workers and people. The Trinamool registered a historic victory in the KMC elections by
winning 134 out of the 144 seats. In 2015, it had won 113 seats, which was so far the highest in recent times. The BJP could manage just three seats, followed by the Left Front and Congress at two each, while three seats were won by Independent candidates. Addressing a gathering in Agartala, former West Bengal minister Rajib Banerjee and Tripura Trinamool leader Subal Bhowmik said that the party would be successful in the 2023 Assembly polls in the northeastern state, and defeat the BJP to restore democracy. Rajib Banerjee said that the BJP in Tripura is frightened after seeing Trinamool’s vote share in the recent civic polls in the state.

Mnp Women Commission logs 76 cases of women violence
Pressure on border residents of Assam to choose M’laya: Minister
IMPHAL, DEC 21: Manipur State Commission for Women (MSC) took up 76 cases of crime against women during the current year 2021 till date compared to 101 registered in the previous year 2020. While hinting that fewer cases does not mean a decline in the crime against women in the state, acting chairperson of the commission Tiningpham Monsang observed that it was due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Addressing a news conference at her office on Tuesday, the acting chairperson added that the case disposal rate was also low as only 13 cases were disposed of till date. She said that the hearings for the pending 63 cases were in progress. In the previous year too, a lesser number of cases related to violence against women were registered. The commission had taken up only 101 cases in 2020, she said. Besides, she said women across the state were facing difficulties and problems in lodging complaints to the police due to the shortage of female personnel. She said that women police stations across the
GUWAHATI, DEC 21 (PTI): Assam Border Areas Development Minister Atul Bora on Tuesday said that there are reports of “pressure” on people in disputed border areas along Meghalaya in Assam’s Kamrup (Rural) district to choose the neighbouring state while settling the boundary row. He did not specify from which source the pressure was being put, though local Boko MLA Nandita Das of the Opposition Congress claimed that Meghalaya Police also had a role in encouraging local residents to opt for the bordering state. Replying to a Zero Hour discussion raised by Das in the Assembly, Bora said, “We have some reports that police administration is encouraging people (in border areas) to choose Meghalaya.” “We have been observing all happenings in these areas minutely and our report will be based on it,” he added. Bora and Das are members of a committee formed by Assam government to look into the disputes in Kamrup (Rural) district areas bordering Meghalaya, and the panel had visited some of these areas a couple of months back for on-ground inspection.

state were understaffed and it was one of the main reasons behind women being unable to lodge their complaints timely. On the other hand, the acting chairperson said that the commission was going to study the status of women in the state beginning from January next year and the commission was eager to know the actual social status of the women in the state. The proposed study will not only reveal the actual status of the women of the state but also help in effective implementation of various programmes for upliftment of women. Monsang who took over the charge of chairperson after Dr Binota Meinam retired as chairperson upon completion of her tenure in October last reminded that the main objective of setting up the commission is to safeguard the interest of women. The Manipur State Commission for Women was constituted on September 15, 2006 as a statutory body under the Manipur State Commission for Women Act 2006. The commission had already started table work for the study and written to the state DGP seeking a report on details of the pending cases on crime against women.
Atul Bora They were accompanied by members of a similar committee from Meghalaya side and during the joint inspection visit, the delegates had held meetings with the public to gauge their preference for either state. Assam and Meghalaya had identified 12 points of disputes at chief ministerial-level talks in August this year, with six points, including the area under Boko legislative assembly constituency in Assam, taken up for resolution in the first phase. A final joint statement by the two states based on reports of ministerial-level committees set for dealing with the six points of dispute is slated to be announced at the end of this month. Bora further said willingness or preference of the residents to choose a state is not the sole criterion for settling the disputes, with ethnicity also being an im-
portant factor that will be taken into consideration. He also said Assam has administrative control in the areas under Boko LAC and though these are mostly Garo community dominated areas, many such villages are likely to opt to remain with Assam. The minister also said the government has received a memorandum submitted by the people of those areas through the local officials wherein they have mentioned their preferences and problems. “We have to ensure safety of lives and property in these areas. We have started patrolling by police and activated the village defence parties. Quick response teams are also on stand by in case of any law and order problem,” Bora added. Earlier raising the matter, Nandita Das alleged that people of Assam were being threatened by miscreants of Meghalaya to choose the neighbouring state during their representations for settling the disputes. “Meghalaya police is interfering with the choice the people make in these borders areas, though our police have abstained from getting involved in it,” she added.
80 percent liquor locally made in Meghalaya Powerful IEDs detected in M’laya, defused

SHILLONG, DEC 21: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma who laid the foundation for the office building of the Commissioner of Excise at Lachumiere in the city today, noted that 80 per cent of liquor consumed in Meghalaya was locally made. “With 80 per cent of liquor consumed in the State produced locally, the new building will also have an excise laboratory for proper checking of the liquors. The Meghalaya Excise logo launched on Tuesday will help create a brand name our homegrown wines, “he said. “This building has
been pending for a very long time. It’s going to be close to 50 years of our statehood and yet an important and revenue generating department like the excise does not have its own building. Once completed it will be one of the iconic infrastructures in the Secretariat area,” he said. Mentioning that the State’s revenue generation was badly hit during the pandemic period, he said that despite the difficult situation the excise department was one of the better performing ones bringing in steady revenue for the state. “In the last three and a half years, the MDA
(Meghalaya Democratic Alliance) government has been really focusing a lot on revenue generation. We went through a difficult time when Covid hit us, but in terms of our revenue collection, we saw that the excise department has done well. We have seen a constant growth of close to 10 to 12 percent in the revenue and that is a very positive indication,” said the Chief Minister who also holds the finance portfolio. He said that many other reforms are being initiated in the excise department that will ultimately result in increased capacity of the department for revenue generation, while
Only import without export behind slow progress in Act East Policy: Manipur CM Correspondent IMPHAL, DEC 21: Only import without export was the main reason behind slow progress in the Act East Policy, said Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh, in a speech on Tuesday. In the cross border trade between India and Myanmar at Moreh of Manipur under the Act East Policy, only the Chinese goods were imported but no goods from the state (Manipur) are exported to the country, the chief minister observed. The gap between export and import would have been the reason behind the little progress in the Act East Policy, he observed Singh was addressing the closing session of the ‘Two Day Discourse on the Present Status of Manipur Economy: Opportunities and Challenges’ held on Tuesday at the centenary hall of Manipur University, Imphal. He said that the state government was considering earmarking a certain amount of funds in the state budget allocation to invest in production so that the state’s products can be exported outside the country. On the other hand, he said that with the improvement of law and order, investors from outside the state have started investing in the state. With the investments, the state has been able to
also opening avenues for enterprising local entrepreneurs in the business of wine making. “A very important reform which we initiated in the department was to allow local wines to be legalized. A lot of people are into wine making and there was no policy in the beginning to monitor and to give legal licensing to these different home wine-makers or small-scale winemakers. They use a variety of locally sourced fruits for their products. So not only does it help those entrepreneurs who are making the wine, but it also benefits our fruit farmers who can sell their excess produce to these
wine makers. Fruits are perishable products therefore it makes complete sense to promote local wine,” he underscored. The Chief Minister also said the Government is trying to bring further reforms in local wine making by looking at the possibility of levying reduced fees and excise duties for local wines. “We are also exploring the possibility of making it accessible through many other channels through different retail outlets with minimum license fees so that they may be able to sell these products without really having to go for a full-fledged license, “he added.

Chairing a meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs on the topic ‘Cyber Crime: Threats, Challenges and Response’ here, Shah said that the work of making analytical tools against cyber crimes has been completed up to 40 per cent. He said that in the last seven years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has taken many important steps to tackle cyber crime, an official statement said. “In the last seven years, the work of setting up the infrastructure to deal with cyber crimes in the country has been completed fully up to the police post level,” he said. the prevention of cyber crime. “Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) has been implemented in all 16,347 police stations in the country. In 99 per cent of police stations, including newly established police stations, 100 per cent FIRs are being registered directly in CCTNS,” he said in the meeting attended by several MPs. The home minister said as public representatives, it is the responsibility of the MPs to try to spread awareness about cyber crimes. “The central government under the leadership
of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to deal with every aspect of this new menace,” he said. Shah referred to various e-initiatives of the Ministry of Home Affairs to deal with cyber crimes such as the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) which facilitates victims and complainants to report cyber crime online. So far more than 6 lakh complaints have been received and 12,776 FIRs have been registered, he said. The home minister said the National Cybercrime Threat Analysis Unit (NCTAU) has issued 142 cyber crime prevention ad-
visories and has blocked 266 mobile apps while 3,800 forensic services were provided by the National Cybercrime Forensic Laboratory (NCFL). He said that seven Joint Cybercrime Coordination Groups (JCCTs) have been constituted which include all States and Union Territories. Shah said the National Cybercrime Training Center (NCTC) registered 8,075 police personnel for online training and issued 1,877 certificates. The home minister said 960 cyber security tips were issued by the authorities and these are constantly being issued on social media. The initiatives focusing on cyber awareness and cyber hygiene promotion among general public through social media handle of MHA @CyberDost, regular SMSs to citizens, etc. are being taken so as to strengthen the mechanism to deal with cyber crimes in a comprehensive and coordinated manner were discussed.
Insta accounts of children also hacked: Priyanka
Derek O’Brien suspended from RS for remainder of winter session
LU C K N OW, D E C 2 1 (PTI): Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday alleged that her children’s Instagram accounts have been hacked. “Leave phone tapping… Instagram account of my children have also been hacked,” Priyanka told reporters when asked about allegations of phone tapping of opposition leaders by the government. “Does the government have no other work?” she asked. The Congress leader made the allegation two days after Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav accused Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of getting his telephones tapped and listening to the recordings of his conversations every evening. Gandhi also claimed that her ‘Ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon’ (I’m a girl and can fight) campaign has forced Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address a women’s meeting in Prayagraj. “Due to ‘Ladki hoon, Lad sakti hoon’ campaign of Congress, PM has to work for women. PM has bowed before the women power. This is a victory of women of Uttar Pradesh,” she said.
NEW DELHI, DEC 21 (IANS): Trinamool Congress floor leader in the Rajya Sabha, Derek O’Brien becomes 13th MP to be suspended for the remaining part of the winter session after the resolution was moved for his suspension by MoS Parliamentary Affairs V. Muraleedharan. In the Chair was Sasmit Patra who condemned the act of O’Brien for throwing rule book towards the Chair which could have hit any official. Patra said the conduct of the Trinamool leader has lowered the dignity of the office of the floor leader. The incident occurred during passing of bill on electoral reforms. The government on Tuesday faced stiff resistance from opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha and the BJP alleged that Trinamool Congress member Derek O’Brien threw the rule book on Secretary General. Leader of the house, Piyush Goyal said, “we thought that the opposition will learn some lessons but the same thing has been repeated.” G oya l s a i d D e r e k O’Brien threw the rule book and he should not have done

it. Goyal also sought apology from the 12 suspended MPs. While Bhupender Yadav raised point of order and said that the opposition has been questioning the Chair repeatedly, but rules say that the Chair’s ruling is binding on all. After being suspended from the Rajya Sabha, O’Brien said in a tweet, “The last time I got suspended from RS was when govt was BULLDOZING #FarmLaws. We all know what happened after that. Today, I was suspended while protesting against BJP making a mockery of #Parliament and BULLDOZING #ElectionLawsBill2021. Hope this Bill too
will be repealed soon.” Earlier the Upper House had suspended 12 MPs for the entire winter session for creating a ruckus in the House during the monsoon session on August 11. The members are Syed Naseer Hussain, Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Phulo Devi Netam, Chhaya Verma, Ripun Bora and Rajmani Patel of the Congress, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Anil Desai of the Shiv Sena, Elamaram Kareem of the CPI-M, Binoy Viswam of the CPI, Dola Sen and Shanta Chhetri of the Trinamool.
Govt decision to raise women’s marriage Oppn hold protest march; demand sacking of MoS Ajay Mishra age causing pain to some: PM Modi’s jibe
Narendra Modi meets BJP leaders during launch of a UP government’s scheme for women, in Prayagraj. (PTI)
PRAYAGRAJ, DEC 21 (PTI): Taking a swipe at his rivals, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said women are happy with the government’s decision to raise the marriage age to 21 but this has caused pain to some. Addressing a rally in Prayagraj, he also said that 25 lakh of the 30 lakh houses given under Prime Minister Awas Yojana are registered in the name of women in Uttar Pradesh. This shows the gov-
ernment’s commitment to “sacha (true) empowerment of women”, Modi said. “We are trying to increase the age of marriage of women to 21 years so that they can have time to study and progress. The country is taking this decision for its daughters. Everyone is seeing who is having problems with this...it has caused pain to some,” he said. Some Samajwadi Party (SP) MPs made adverse comments on the issue recently.
In an apparent dig at the SP’s rule in the state, the prime minister said, “Five years ago the mafia ruled the roost on the roads of Uttar Pradesh. The worst sufferer were our sisters and daughters”. “It was difficult for them to move out on roads and go to schools and colleges. But Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has put these hooligans in their right place,” he said. The SP, which was in power from 2012 to 2017, was succeeded by the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh. Hailing the Adityanath government, the prime minister said, “In Uttar Pradesh now there is security, rights and opportunities (for women). I am confident that with the blessings of our mothers and sisters, no one will push the state back to darkness again. Come let’s take an oath from this pious land of Prayagraj that Uttar Pradesh will progress.”
NEW DELHI, DEC 21 (PTI): Opposition leaders on Tuesday took out a protest march here demanding that action be taken against Union Minister Ajay Mishra in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi saying they will not rest till the minister is sent to jail. Leaders of several opposition parties took out the march from Gandhi statue inside Parliament complex to Vijay Chowk demanding that the minister, whose son has been arrested in the Lakhimpur violence case, be immediately sacked. They also demanded that the suspension of their 12 MPs be immediately revoked. MPs of various parties raised slogans against the government and held placards and banners demanding the immediate sacking of the minister. Talking to reporters at Vijay Chowk, Gandhi said the entire opposition was united in raising its demand for the sacking of Minister Mishra. Referring to the SIT

On February 1, Myanmar’s military grabbed power in the coup and imposed a state of emergency after detaining Nobel laureate Suu Kyi and other leaders of her National League for Democracy (NLD). The country witnessed massive protests following the coup. As the Myanmarese military continued its crackdown on civilians protesting against the coup, India in April condemned any use of violence and said it stands for the restoration of democracy in Myanmar.

Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and discussed their further strategy. Opposition parties have been protesting against the suspension of MPs, which they have termed as undemocratic and against the rules of the House. Proceedings of the Rajya Sabha have been disrupted repeatedly on the matter. Kharge and Congress MP Deepinder Singh Hooda also gave adjournment notices in the Rajya Sabha on the Lakhimpur matter. Congress MP Manickam Tagore gave a similar adjournment notice in the Lok Sabha on the Lakhimpur Kheri violence. Eight people, including four farmers, were killed in the Lakhimpur violence on October 3. “I have given a suspension of business/notice under Rule 267 to discuss the recent SIT report on the manslaughter of Lakhimpur. We demand that MoS Ajay Mishra be immediately removed from his position to ensure a free and fair trial,” Kharge said on Twitter.

Sacrilegious murders
P
unjab politics is revolved around religion of the dominant Sikh community, called Sikhism and nobody in Punjab can dare to take perceived offense against the religion lightly. Sikhs are known for their valour, hard work, generosity, philanthropy and respect for all communities and religions. The protectors of Sikhism are called Nihangs or Nihang Singhs, originally known as Akalis or Akali Nihangs. They are designated the Guru’s knights or the Guru’s beloved and are always armed and are usually seen mounted heavily laden with weapons such as swords, daggers, spears, rifles, shotguns and pistols. However, when it comes to defining loyalty to their religion, Sikhs don’t take any perceived offence lightly. In fact what has been witnessed during the recent weeks shocks the perception of how the hardy Sikhs can act just the opposite. Sikh Nihangs have not spared anyone for any perceived ‘insult’ or disrespect to the Sikh Holy Book called the Granth or Granth Sahib or religious articles such as the kirpan, pagdi(turban) and rumala. Any act of attempting to damage, tear or burn the Granth Sahib is considered ‘sacrilegious’while any attempt to insult the religious articles is considered ‘blasphemous’. Punjab has witnessed a heated political context to blasphemy. On December 18, a man was done to death for an alleged sacrilege at the Golden Temple in Amritsar when he jumped into the sanctum sanctorum where the Granth Sahib was kept and hit it with a nearly kirpan. He was charged with sacrilege at a village in Kapurthala and reportedly lynched after a scuffule between Sikh groups and police. Another person was killed the next day on Sunday morning by a mob at a village gurdwara in Kapurthala for suspected theft and attempted sacrilege. It may be recalled that on October 15 Lakhbir Singh, a Dalit Sikh from Tarn Taran district of Punjab had his hand and legs chopped off and later his body left hanging on a barricade near the farmers’protest site at Singhu border on charges of committing sacrilege. The victim bled to death and the act was claimed by a Nihang group. As Sikhs treat Guru Granth Sahib as a living guru, sacrilege is considered as heinous as murder. Any statement against those involved in the lynchings is treated against religion. Political parties in Punjab continue to remain silent on the recent lynching of persons accused of sacrilege. On the other hand, the lynchings are directly or indirectly justified by some politicians. There have been attempts in Punjab to frame Blasphemy laws to punish those who offend religious sentiments. However Sacrilege is blasphemy, but blasphemy may not be sacrilege. According to legal luminaries, the law distinguishes between injuring or defiling a place of worship, or any object held sacred by any class of person (Section 295 of the Indian Penal Code), and simpliciter outraging the religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs (Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code). The former requires only an intention to insult, while the latter the dolus specialis of deliberate and malicious intention to outrage. It is hoped that India will never see any Blasphemy law like in Pakistan where mobs become judge, jury and executioner in whatever they deem as blasphemy.
DailyDevotion Experience or God’s Revealed Truth?
We have received…the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. —1 Corinthians 2:12 My experience is not what makes redemption real— redemption is reality. Redemption has no real meaning for me until it is worked out through my conscious life. When I am born again, the Spirit of God takes me beyond myself and my experiences, and identifies me with Jesus Christ. If I am left only with my personal experiences, I am left with something not produced by redemption. But experiences produced by redemption prove themselves by leading me beyond myself, to the point of no longer paying any attention to experiences as the basis of reality. Instead, I see that only the reality itself produced the experiences. My experiences are not worth anything unless they keep me at the Source of truth— Jesus Christ. If you try to hold back the Holy Spirit within you, with the desire of producing more inner spiritual experiences, you will find that He will break the hold and take you again to the historic Christ. Never support an experience which does not have God as its Source and faith in God as its result. If you do, your experience is anti-Christian, no matter what visions or insights you may have had. Is Jesus Christ Lord of your experiences, or do you place your experiences above Him? Is any experience dearer to you than your Lord? You must allow Him to be Lord over you, and pay no attention to any experience over which He is not Lord. Then there will come a time when God will make you impatient with your own experience, and you can truthfully say, “I do not care what I experience— I am sure of Him!” Be relentless and hard on yourself if you are in the habit of talking about the experiences you have had. Faith based on experience is not faith; faith based on God’s revealed truth is the only faith there is.

Post-mortem
Remembering the Church foundation day in Nagaland A s Nagaland observes 149th anniversary today since the inception of the first Baptist Church in Nagaland, it is interesting to revisit the momentous day that dawned at Molungkimong on 22 December 1872. We glorify the mighty works of God and also acknowledge the perilous and sacrificial works of the pioneers - Supongmeren, Godhula and Dr. Clark. Since Clarks commissioning as Missionary to India by ABMU in 1868, Clark and Mary Mead left Boston for India and after travelling for more than four months arrived at Sibsagar in 1869, and took charge as Press Superintendent and general mission works at Sibsagar Mission Station under Assam Misssion. During the mission work of Clark, he became associated with Godhula who was converted while at the mission school at Nowgong. Godhula married one of the Christian girls named Lucy from the Mission school. Initially they went as evangelists to work at Majuli island. Later Godhula and his wife returned to Sibsagar again to work with Clark. Godhula was responsible for establishing the first contact between Clark and the Aos who came to Sibsagar for trade. At a time when Clark’s eyes were set on the Naga hills, he got acquainted with Supongmeren through Godhula. Supongmeren had gone down to Sibsagar in search of his son, who had
T
earlier went down to Sibsagar because of the prevailing Chicken box epidemic in the village. Within a short while of their acquaintance Godhula and Dr. Clark were drawn into evangelizing the headhunters, Supongmeren got fascinated by the teachings of Christianity and school at Sibsagar. With their new found reciprocal interests and with the objective of evangelizing the Aos, Supongmeren was entrusted by Clark with a pay to teach the Ao language and Culture to Godhula. In the process Godhula and Clark learnt the Ao language and since the Aos could also speak Assamese they could converse. In the course of their conversation, Godhula explained everything about the new religion and further assured that the God of the new religion will stop head-hunting and sickness in the village and that God would deliver peace and harmony among the people. Supongmeren was fascinated to hear the good news since the natives lived with threat of enemies, deadly diseases and famine. As his interest grew in the promise of the Gospel, he was convinced that this God would liberate them from every possible problem and fear. Supongmeren, along with other Ao natives, persistently invited Godhula and Clark to their village to teach them the gospel and also teach the ways of knowledge to their children especially after what they saw in the classroom at Sibsagar. “I saw that they
was ‘Temolung Meyipang, Temolung Meyipangma nu, which was a song of repentance. Later, when the elders found that Godhula was not a spy but a bearer of the new religion, they released him and provided him best of hospitality. As he got access to the people, he sang, prayed and told stories from the Bible with the help of his friend and translator, Supongmeren. After a week when Godhula proposed to return to Sibsagar women and children wept which is a testament of the impact that Godhula had created on the hearts and minds of the natives. Beginning October 1871 Godhula made several trips to the village and in the following year in April, Godhula was accompanied by his wife, Lucy, to Molungkimong to further evangelize the Ao Natives. As the hear ts and minds of the villagers were drawn in closer to the new religion, the general Village Council of Molungkimong resolved to accept the new religion. The council decided that the new religion will be accepted with collective responsibility of consequent adversity or fortune and to that end, one representative of every clan would be baptized. Godhula accompanied by nine natives returned to Sibsagar with his first fruits of labor and were baptized by Clark on 10th November, 1872. On their return to the village, a small chapel was built in the village with the permission of the Molungkimong
Kosasanger Village Council. In a short while, with the seeds of evangelism, there were more natives who were ready to accept the new religion. The Village Council made necessary arrangements and made an appointment and invited Dr. Clark to the village. Since it was a dangerous expedition for Clark, more so it was beyond the British flag, and a very risky task on the part of the natives to protect the life of the White man, the Village Council sent sixty warriors to escort Dr. Clark. The group set out for Molungkimong from Sibsagar on 16th December through the ‘Rongsensü Lenmang’ (Ao-Ahom Trade Route that ran through Molungkimong and connected Ao villages with Assam). They slept the first night in Buckingham Bunglow (Residence of Tea Garden Manager) at Amgoorie. The next day about mid day they set out into the realm of wild animals and head hunters and by evening they reached the banks of Tero River where they spent the night in the perilous jungle under the vigilant eyes of the warriors. The third day, they started early morning and after the fatiguing uphill journey, they reached Angotsükong hillock from where a smoke to signal was sent out declaring the arrival of the White man, which prepared the eager villagers to receive the group. Clark, safe yet exhausted, arrived at the Molungkimong village gate escorted by the
sixty fierce warriors at 12 O’clock on Wednesday, 18th December 1872. The 60 warriors included those 9 men who were baptized on 10 Nov’ 1872. Their services of escorting Clark was voluntary but for the non-Christians Clark paid them Rs. 14/- for their services but before Clrk left the village the non-believers returned the money to Clark as a donation to the mission. This was another testament of the natives’ role towards the support of the mission besides building a missionary’s house and a Chapel without any expense to the mission. Consequently, the following Sabbath on 22nd December, 1872, the fifteen men were baptized by Dr. Clark in the village pond after which they all partook the Lords Supper at the chapel hall. This event marked the establishment of the first Church in Nagaland at Molungkimong. The establishment of the first Baptist Church in Nagaland on 22 December 1872 is historic, and which unfolded with a lot of danger, threat and sacrifice. This part of history was carved out in an uncertain pretext of better or worse, blessing or curse upon their clan and village. Amidst criticism and warning from other village, our Naga forefathers accepted the Gospel in simple faith and took the call for baptism that changed the fate and course of life of the Nagas. Christmas as a Movement: A Critical Reflection
he unlocking phase of Covid-19 Pandemic is a welcome sigh of relief for many people walking out from the dark tunnel of self-isolation and nightmare. At the end of it, a slim yet promising ray of hope eventually appears in the sky. With Christmas around the corner, once again the market places, shopping malls and bazaars have been fully occupied. Everywhere you go, flashes of neon light hits the eye of the beholder. As they say, an ice-breaker isn’t a bad way to ease the uncomfortable silence. Let me therefore share one childhood memory. Long before online and social media was conceived, my friend and I were entertaining ourselves playing caroms. On one occasion, my friend managed to convert a seemingly difficult dice. Instantly, that feat became his eureka moment. While doing rounds of self-applauding, an uncle who was watching us said something, of course, with a degree of sarcasm. He said, “Hey guys, do you know that people landed on the moon 50 years ago?” Eventually, the celebration was short-lived and we continued the game. With this story in mind, I would like to pose a set of uncomfortable questions. Considering the era we live in, it’s easy to go with the flow. The techno-savvy comfort and the fun we derive from unexamined life has become the new normal. Apart from Biblical understanding of Christmas, we are being spoon-fed with the bazaar understanding and the religious understanding of Christmas. So the questions arise; have we lost/distorted the meaning of Christmas in the process of our celebration? Have we become self-

were anxious for something better for their children… but as for me the risk was too great to be taken at that time.” (Bowers, 1929: 198.) “In the great council of all the warriors, we considered carefully your fear, which my young men reported to me…and with power and assurance, he said, we the men of the town of a thousand warriors guarantee to protect you.” It was then that Dr. Clark promised to visit Molungkimong. To Dr. Clark’s surprise, Godhula, volunteered to go with them immediately and thus said Godhula, “I am a christian, a servant of the Master and in his name and strength I can go with them. You will soon come and then we will work together.” And thus Godhula, the young Assamese, became the first to carry the Good News gospel into the hills to Molungkimong. Eventually, Godhula made a trip to Molungkimong village with Supongmeren and some other Molungkimong natives in October 1871. However, on their arrival at Molungkimong, the village elders suspected Godhula as an agent of East India Company and kept Godhula in confinement. During the confinement he narrated stories from the Bible and sang songs. It is said that Godhula was a very good singer and in his confinement he sang the song “Nearer my God to thee” in Assamese. One song he sang with passionate zeal that touched the natives
applauding Christians while Christ is pushed to the backseat? Or are we blindly feeding the neo-liberal markets? These questions need to be raised because there is a danger of commercializing Christmas. The force of capitalism has swept across the global world. The local contexts like ours are not exempted either. The neon god seems to be thriving even better in this pandemic with prices shooting up almost every day. Unfortunately, we don’t have the Israeli “Iron dome” technology to intercept inflation. At the receiving end, poverty strikes many homes. Come January and we will see tear drops falling down from the eyes of parents who do not have the resources to pay their kids admission and tuition fees. Faced with such a situation, what do we do? Do we recall Sherlock Holmes, the detective, to solve this puzzle? Perhaps, we need to revisit Christmas in our times and recover the meaning of Christmas. One approach is to deconstruct the over-emphasized celebration. The extravagant parties and the glamorous possessions we often take pride in can be stripped off. Instead, we learn to give away and still lack nothing. More importantly, the experience of the person of Christ remains paramount. It is in this context where we begin to see the bigger picture of Christmas. It is where we begin to see Christmas or good news as a movement. Good news entails our encounter with Christ. In his birth, Jesus has entered into a system that was ailing, broken, chaotic, distrustful, egoistic and fragile. Greed had colonized societies and people were caged in hopelessness. Yet in the coming of Christ, we see healing, empower-
ment, forgiveness, reconciliation, truth and justice beyond law and legality. It is Jesus who laid down the framework of redemption and transformation to humanity and above all, setting up the vision of a new earth and a new heaven. It is good news for the present and the age to come. Jesus of Nazareth walked in and around the region of Galilee teaching, preaching, healing and serving even the least of all. As a movement leader, his other-worldly activism is not self-centred, neither appeasement, nor patronizing and non-status quoist. Rather, he employed the approach of humility and emphatically communicated the language of love. In this way, he has laid down the cornerstone of the kingdom of God. The introductory passage of the gospel of John says, “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”(John 1:14) It indicates the beginning of a limitless movement. Invariably, this movement is getting manifested in the lives of millions across communities, nations, and societies wherein the values and the virtues of the Kingdom are practiced and embraced. It is evident in the lives of many who have encountered Jesus. Few testimonies may be drawn for the present purpose. First, we have Simon Peter, the fisherman turned disciple. In his crude old-self, Peter is strong headed and someone who lacks consistency. Jesus had to rebuke and confront him many times and even warned him of his denial. Moreover, he had a preconceived notion towards the non-Jews based on circumcision. However, it was the experience of the Holy Spirit and the obedience to it that he began to practice tolerance and
embrace diversity. Second, we have seen how Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman has completely changed her worldview. The deep rivalry on the basis of traditions and religious practices had conditioned her life till. After the encounter, a new outlook is formed based on truth and spirit that is life-giving and empowering. The third person is Zacheaus, the tax collector who has been found excessively exploiting the people. Like Supaandi, he comically sat on a tree the day he met Jesus. Unequivocally, it prompted Zacheaus to do and practice justice. Fourth, under the bondage of slavery and sin, we have the woman caught in adultery. She was labeled and shamed by the Pharisees of the day who took the law in their own hands. It was Jesus who showed her grace, pronounced forgiveness and freed her ultimately. Fifth, we have Paul, also known as Saul, a highly learned man and a hardcore persecutor turned apostle. He was one of the convicts in the stoning of Stephen who instigated violence. He had his Damascus experience and later became an ambassador of Christ to the Gentiles. Paul became a robust defender of the gospel of peace, love and nonviolence. From the premise of the above testimonies, we may infer that this movement is radically subversive in terms of re-conception of the world and its systems. It is about conversion of our worldview based on the truth, justice, forgiveness and reconciliation. The legacy of this movement has been felt across race, caste, tribe and culture throughout the centuries. For instance, John Newton,
the slave trader had encountered Christ. Soon history would point out that slave trade was abolished. Martin Luther King junior, a vocal pastor spoke against racial discrimination. Mother Teresa walked outside the comfort of her home to stay with the destitute in India till her last breath. This good news and the story of Jesus have even influenced people outside the Christian faith. Talk about personalities like Gandhi and Ambedkar whose contribution towards non-violence and emancipation of caste still remains a reference point for us to stand for a cause. In our own Naga context, the much-romanticized headhunting culture was brought to an end with the message of the Good news. Likewise, this movement story needs to inspire, reignite and prompt us to move beyond the comfort zone of the festive mood. A critical reflection may, therefore, offer us to rethink Christmas, lest it become a self-applauding event like the way my friend and I did as mentioned earlier in the story. To conclude, I reiterate that we inherit an incommensurable legacy - a saga foretold through prophet Isaiah. Christmas as a movement is an everyday plebiscite and not merely a one-time ceremony. It entails our continuous experience and encounter with Christ both at the personal and the public domain. Most importantly, Christmas as a movement has a future. My hope and prayer is that we continue to engage proactively in this movement till the Kingdom of God is established here on earth as it is in Heaven. Use of ITK and its practice in Nagaland
n case of bloat or tympany in ruminant animals administration of mineral oil with asafoetida (hing) for removal of gas is a common practice. A teaspoon full of honey with water (50-100 ml) is used for diarrhea treatment. In Food and Mouth Disease (FMD) of animals sour honey (Teliane dui) is applied on the wounds to give relief. Finely crushed charcoal is used to feed animals in case of poisoning by Angami tribe.
One teaspoon of honey + a pinch of salt +100 ml of water is used to gas expulsion by Angami, Zeliang, Lotha, Sumi and Rengma tribes. Tradition-
al methods of treatments based on ITKs are still a crucial part of social life and culture in Nagaland. Knowledge gained by tribals remained confined to their near and dear ones and has been passed on from generation to generation as a guarded secret. The local healers are unwilling to share their knowledge with others not only because of the fear that their source of income will be affected but because they
are also aware that random harvesting would deplete these valuable plants. Acknowledging Indigenous Traditional Knowledge is very important in motivating the local people, especially the younger generation in carrying this noble tradition for future generations. KMC poll results: TMC registers landslide victory KO L K ATA , D E C 2 1 (IANS): After registering an unprecedented victory winning 133 of the 144 seats in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation election on Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated the people saying that the city will only show way to the people of the country. The Trinamool Congress registered a historic victory in the KMC election winning 134 of the 144 seats. In 2015, it had won 113 seats which was, so far, the highest in recent times and this year it has broken its previous records turning the Opposition into minnows. All the 16 boroughs have been under the control of Trinamool Congress. BJP that - even before the Assembly polls - was aggressive enough to challenge the supremacy of Trinamool Congress has been successful in bagging only three seats followed by congress and Left front that managed to get two seats each. The independent candidates got three seats. In 2015, the ruling Trinamool Congress had

Three seats were won by the Independent candidates. This year, the ruling party improved its tally further. Interacting with media after the victory, the chief minister said: “This is a victory of the people who have given their mandate
in favour of development. This is a victory of development that Trinamool Congress has been continuously doing since its inception to power in 2011”. “People have come out wholeheartedly to vote. This is a victory for democracy. This will help to keep a low profile and humbly work for the people of the city as well as of the state,” the chief minister added.
Speaking on a larger perspective, the chief minister stated: “This victory is very important on national level also because all the national parties like BJP, Congress and Left Front have been defeated by the people’s mandate. We will work more for the development of the state”. “The beautification of Kolkata has been done. We stay on-ground and don’t
fly by night. We will now work for the urban and semi-urban areas also,” she added. Outgoing mayor Firhad Hakim, who went to meet chief minister Mamata Banerjee after the results fuelling the speculation of becoming the mayor for the second time, told the reporters: “We should accept the mandate of the people. We also did opposition politics for 34 years but we never questioned the people. They defeated us and we accepted it with a whole heart”. Hitting out at BJP for their demand for repoll, Hakim said: “One should have the moral courage to accept the people’s mandate. BJP is insulting the common people - the voters who went all the way from their houses to the polling stations to give their vote. BJP is insulting them. They have given the answers.” Asked whether Firhad Hakim will be the next mayor, a senior Trinamool leader said: “That will be decided by the party. Once the result comes in the leadership will decide the future mayor of the city”.

The order also noted that Sengar was in judicial custody during the period when the alleged threat was extended to the victim or her family members. Admittedly the case of prosecution was that he conspired with the other accused to extend the threat to the victim or her family members and he himself not extended any threat, the court said. On August 1, 2019 the Supreme Court transferred the case to Delhi from a trial court in Uttar Pradesh. Besides, on December 20, 2019, Sengar was sentenced to jail for the “remainder of his natural biological life” in a separate case for raping the minor in 2017.
ALAPPUHZA(KER), DEC 21 (PTI): Claiming ‘good development” in the investigation of the recent killings of SDPI’s K S Shan and BJP functionary Ranjith Sreenivas here, the police on Tuesday said several suspects have been taken into custody and interrogation is progressing fast to identify whether they were directly involved in the crime. While SDPI state secretary Shan was killed by a gang on Saturday night while he was on his way back home, the BJP OBC Morcha state secretary, Sreenivas was hacked to death in front of his family by some assailants in his house on Sunday morning. ADGP (Law and Order) Vijay Sakhare, who is heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the two separate cases, said all aspects including the conspiracy angle would be investigated after the culprits are identified. Social media surveillance has been intensified
in connection with the murders, the officer said and warned of stringent action against those putting up provocative and illegal posts. The senior IPS officer also said there is good development in the investigation and he and his team were expecting to get a “breakthrough” in the case soon. “We have taken several suspects into the custody. But it is too early to say whether they were directly involved in the crime. Our immediate target is to complete the interrogation at the earliest, identify the culprits and record their arrest,” Sakhare told reporters here. No specific confirmation could be given right now unless the story is clear to the investigators, he said. Seeking to maintain the law and order situation and to check recurring of similar crimes, raids have been carried out across the district and several history sheeters have been taken into custody, the official added.
Anti-conversion bill will be black mark on Karnataka: Shivakumar BELAGAVI (KARNATAKA), DEC 21 (IANS): Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday said that the proposed anti-conversion bill is going to be a black mark on the state. He further stated that, if the proposed bill is introduced it will affect the foreign investments in the state. Speaking to reporters at Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi, Shivakumar said that children of all top BJP leaders are studying in Christian institutes. “I have also studied in a Christian institute. Is there any instance of forceful conversions?” he asked. The Christians are running academic and medical institutions which are service oriented and Hindu religious organisations are also running charities. “We are not forcing anyone to convert to Hinduism,” he stated. “We have been opposing the anti-conversion bill since the beginning. The bill is against the constitution and it has to be opposed. The bill is being introduced to create unrest in the society for political reasons. There has been an
J’khand petrol pumps demand reduction in VAT
RANCHI, DEC 21 (PTI): Around 1,400 petrol pumps across Jharkhand remained closed on Tuesday, demanding reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT), their association said. The strike evoked an overwhelming response as all the petrol pumps in the state remained shut since morning, said Jharkhand Petroleum Dealers’ Association (JPDA) general secretary Sharad Dudani. “We were left with no option but to go on strike as our demand to reduce VAT from current 22 per cent to 17 per cent on petrol and diesel, as well as clearance of outstanding dues of government institutions fell on deaf ears,” he told PTI. Several petrol pumps in the state, particularly those located along the national highways, were incurring losses as diesel and petrol were costlier in Jharkhand as compared to neighbouring Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal and UP, he said.

attempt to shift the focus of the people from real issues,” he stated.’ There is no scope for forceful conversions and presently the issue of religious freedom is being addressed by existing laws. Many foreign nationals who come to ISKCON, Mata Amrutanandamayi centres chant Hindu bhajans. When this is the scenario, this bill is going to create an uneasy atmosphere for all, he explained. This is a secular country and peaceful land. The foreigners have great respect towards the country as they think people of all faiths are living in harmony here. The bill is targeting Christians and it is a ploy to disturb peace, he reiterated. This nation has been ruled by the Moghuls, Por-
tuguese and Britishers in the past. Their population has not increased, so where is the question of conversion in a Hindu nation, he asked. “Forceful conversions have not taken place all these years and suddenly how did they discover religious conversions? Muslims are still 11 to 12 per cent in the country,” he maintained. When questioned about ‘Love Jihad’, Shivakumar responded that, if two persons are in love and if two hearts are united, does it become ‘Love Jihad’. C.M. Ibrahim, Congress MLC said that BJP should think about the safety of Kannadigas in foreign nations if they are planning to bring anti-conversion law in the state. “It is shameful on the part of BJP leaders who get their children educated at Christian institutes, avail health services at Christian hospitals and later blame Christians for conversions. If the bill is presented in the Legislative Council, it is going to be opposed,” he said. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai is on exit mode already, let him not make this mistake,” he underlined.
A pic that has seared the winter chill in Lucknow
Mulayam Singh Yadav with Mohan Bhahgwat. LU C K N OW, D E C 2 1 (IANS): A photograph has seared the winter chill and spun the political scenario in Uttar Pradesh almost out of control. The photograph in question is that of Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, which has created a major controversy. Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mohan Bhagwat met on Monday at the wedding reception of Vice President Venkaiah Naidu’s granddaughter in Delhi. Mulayam Singh and the RSS chief were seen sitting together in a photo tweeted by Union Minister
Arjun Meghwal. Hours later, the Congress shot off a tweet taking aim at the Samajwadi Party. “Is the S in the ‘new SP’ meant to be Sanghawad?” the Uttar Pradesh Congress said in its post in Hindi. The BJP gleefully replied, “Photograph says a lot.” The Samajwadi Party, meanwhile, has maintained a studied silence on the issue while rival parties are said to be preparing to carry forward the controversy by dishing out earlier photographs of Mulayam Singh with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top BJP leaders.
‘India has become exporter of State machinery should not be used to gather defence equipment under Modi’ crowds for PM’s rallies, says Samajwadi Party
PITHORAGARH (U’KHAND), DEC 21 (PTI): Union Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt on Tuesday said India has become an exporter of defence equipment under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing election rallies in Uttarakhand’s Dharchula and Pithoragarh as part of the BJP’s Vijay Sankalp Yatra, he said India has not only taken major steps over the last seven years towards achieving self-reliance in manufacturing defence equipment, but is also exporting those to 72 countries. “We have kept 209 defence equipment for domestic production, which used to be imported earlier,” Bhatt, who is also the MP from Nainital, said. “The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the leading research institute in the field
LUCKNOW, DEC 21 (PTI): The Samajwadi Party on Tuesday accused the ruling BJP in Uttar Pradesh of resorting to misuse of money and government resources to gather crowds for rallies addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner, SP’s state unit chief Naresh Uttam Patel said, “In the rally of the Prime Minister held in Prayagraj (on Tuesday), hundreds of UPSRTC buses and private buses in large numbers were arranged with he help of RTO (regional transport officer) in order to gather crowds. This is a misuse of government machinery
and money.” He also said the Prime Minister is a BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh, and only few days are left for the announcement of the election dates. The Prime Minister is holding rallies and addressing people for BJP’s electoral preparations and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is misusing the government machinery and money, Patel said. The SP leader urged the Election Commission to ensure free and fair elections and stop the BJP government in the state from misusing government machinery and money.

JAMMU, DEC 21 (IANS): Leaders of the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) on Tuesday termed the draft proposals by the Delimitation Commission as ‘divisive’ and said they will stage a peaceful protest against the draft proposals on January 1, 2022. The PAGD leaders met at the residence of National Conference president and Lok Sabha member Farooq Abdullah here on Tuesday. M.Y. of defence in the world, has listed India among the top 25 countries that export defence equipment,” he said. The researches being carried out by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are making the country self-reliant in the sphere of defence, the Union minister said. The Centre has also given projects worth Rs 1 lakh crore to Uttarakhand in recent years, he pointed out. “The Centre has helped in the opening of a plastic factory in the state, a fashion technology institute (NIFTI), a law university and institutes like the AIIMS,” Bhatt said. The Modi government has given the state three times of what it had received from the Centre in the last 50 years, he claimed. To s t r e n g t h e n t h e economy of the border villages, the defence ministry has launched a programme named “Sarhadon ki Suraksha”, under which over 1,500 farmers of the border districts of Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh and Chamoli have been trained to grow foodgrains and vegetables for the armed forces deputed at the Indo-China border, Bhatt said. The Army has already started purchasing these items from the farmers, he added.

‘Free’ import policy for three pulses
NEW DELHI, DEC 21 (IANS): The Centre has extended the ease in quantitative import restrictions policy for pulses such as tur, urad and moong till March 2022. Earlier, only tur and urad were under the ‘free’ category, which was supposed to be over by December 31, an industry insider said. The move entails that ‘bill of lading’ or ‘lorry receipts’ from the originating countries need to be obtained on or before March 31, 2022, and the cargoes should reach Indian ports by June 30, 2022, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a notification. The Centre’s move is seen as an attempt to stem rising food inflation in the country. “The move shall bring stability to the trade and provide continuity of shipments, thereby ensuring stability of prices, both at the place of origin and within India. Bill on CA, cost accountants, company secretaries referred to standing committee Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, the Institute of Cost Accountants of India and the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. Strengthening the disciplinary mechanisms, providing provision for timebound disposal of cases against the members of the three institutes, addressing the conflict of interest between the institutes’ administrative and disciplinary arms, and enhancing overall accountability are the Bill’s key objectives. Chartered accountants, cost accountants and company secretaries come under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949, the Cost and Works Accountants Act, 1959 and the Company Secretaries Act, 1980, respectively. On account of changes in the country’s economic and corporate environment, it has become necessary to amend the Acts. “Further, recent corporate events have put the
profession of chartered accountancy under a considerable scrutiny,” according to the Statement of Objects and Reasons of the Bill. In recent years, the role of certain chartered accountants has come under the scanner following various corporate frauds coming into light. The amendments to the Acts have been proposed on the basis of recommendations made by a high-level committee that was set up by the Corporate Affairs Ministry to examine the existing provisions in the Acts for dealing with the cases of misconduct in the three professional institutes. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, the Institute of Cost Accountants of India and the Institute of Company Secretaries of India are the three professional institutes and they also have the powers to take disciplinary action against their respective members.

tion was extremely challenging due to extreme weather and poor geological conditions. At the South Portal, near Dhundi, extremely fractured and pulverised rock led to complete collapse of the tunnel face at the Seri Nala fault zone. Almost 8,000 litres of water per minute gushed into the tunnel along with muck flooding the excavated area. This slowed down tunnelling progress from 120m per month to almost 20m per month, the company said in a statement. The problem was finally solved by Afcons with a unique innovation in the form of pipe roofing system. The heavily damaged roof was strengthened using a seamless array of long pipes (12-15m) to build an umbrella-like structure in the crown. While most of the area was covered by a single row of pipe roofing, in extremely weak zones, double rows were created. Slow, yet steady, progress was made, and 40,000m of single and double pipe roofing was installed, it said in a statement. “The Atal Tunnel is an engineering marvel in its true sense. Never in India before a tunnel of this scale and complexity has been

constructed. Although the Seri Nala fault zone was of 526m, the excavation took four years to complete. Due to heavy water ingress, the face of the tunnel literally used to flow like a river of mud and boulders. Securing the tunnel face under these circumstances and excavating further was a huge task,” said Satish Paretkar, Director and BU Head, Hydro and Underground Works, Afcons. “While overcoming the Seri Nala fault zone was daunting, this is one of the few tunnels in the world, and the first in India, that has been built with an emergency escape tunnel below the main tunnel. Passages have been provided at every 500m where a stairway leads to the escape route. In times of adversity, the escape tunnel can be used to evacuate people,” Paretkar added. The tunnel bypasses the treacherous Rohtang Pass, reduces travel time and ensures uninterrupted movement of people and supplies. It also opens a new chapter in the lives of locals at Lahaul and Spiti by ending their six-month isolation during winter months. Hiring for delivery boys in Kohima, Dimapur, Mokukchong. The group reminded Wangtin that after few days when oath of allegiance for VP to Akato was administered on October 28, 2017, Akato himself gave some of his personal weapons for Wangtin’s security, and so asked him not try to cut the hand that once fed him. Referring to the threat for action after one week, NSCN asked WTC how many guns, cadres and seasoned fighters did it have and dared WTC to fight any time anywhere. However, since the Naga public wanted peace, NSCN said it would honour their wish. “But the WTC continues to bark, because they know very well that the public will not allow any clash,” it stated. Hence, NSCN/GPRN requested NGOs/CSOs, public and competent authorities “to allow some 2/3 hours for a face-off so that there could be a showdown”.

It said that the CFSB office was also stationed adjacent to Wangtin’s residence, “but unfortunately without even a pen, let alone stationeries or documents.” NSCN alleged that Wangtin had usurped the land from one top official of NSCN (I-M) and in order to save his encroached land, he was keeping CFSB office there. Terming the allegation of Rs 7 crore misappropriation as too amusing due to the fact that WTC had taken a loan of Rs 5 lakh before Akato joined NSCN (R) to attend ceasefire meetings at Delhi by mortgaging private residence of former supervisor Newell Achumi, NSCN claimed that the case was settled and the amount refunded with an interest of Rs 12.50 lakh by then vice-president Akato. “Hence if WTC would bow so low as to take loan of just 5 lacs for some very important Delhi’s meeting, it is never in the league of WTC to uttering such huge amounts of 7 crore, so you are advised not to bite off more

the pragmatic trade policies being adopted by the Indian authorities,” said Vatsal Lilani, President at Overseas Agro Traders Association, Myanmar. Myanmar and Tanzania are two major suppliers of pulses to India. “Tanzania is Africa’s top pulses’ exporter to India and only comes third – behind Canada and Myanmar – globally. It has always been consistent in supplying the world’s leading pulses consumers with products of good quality for years now,” said Zirack Andrew, national coordinator at Tan-
on refined palm oil, extended ‘free’ import policy for three variants of palm oil, and banned seven agri commodities from exchange trading. According to Bimal Kothari, Vice Chairman, India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA): “When comparing the prices of pulses to the price of oil, the former have remained relatively stable over the last three to four months. Pulses have not seen a significant increase in their prices. Chana is being sold for lower than MSP whereas tur and urad are being sold at MSP, so prices of pulses aren’t increasing. “Tur harvesting has already been done in many places and is still in progress in some others. The late rains in the southern states may have caused some damage. In the next three months, however, tur’s availability on the international market will be limited.”

Vladimir Putin blames West for tensions in Europe
M O S C OW, D E C 2 1 (AGENCIES): Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday blamed the West for escalating tensions in Europe, saying it had incorrectly assessed the outcome of the Cold War. Speaking to senior military officials, Putin said Russia would respond “adequately” to any Western aggression and would develop its army further. “Why did they expand NATO and renounce the missile defence treaties? They are to blame for what is happening now, for the tensions building up in Europe,” Putin said. After what it regarded as its victory in the Cold War, Washington’s judgement has been clouded by euphoria, he said, leading it to poor policy choices. Russia has amassed tens of thousands of troops on the

border with Ukraine, demanding that NATO refuse to accept the former Soviet republic as a member and guarantee that no weapons or troops will be deployed there. Putin said he hoped for constructive talks with Washington and Brussels on Russia’s demands for security guarantees as there were signs the West was ready to work on the issue. “Armed conflicts and bloodshed are absolutely not something we would choose, we do not want such
a scenario,” Putin said. He said Russia’s proposals were no ultimatum, but it had nowhere to retreat over Ukraine. Speaking at the same meeting, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said the United States had deployed some 8,000 troops near Russian borders and, alongside NATO allies, frequently mounted flights by strategic bomber planes close to Russia. Attempts by NATO to get the Ukrainian army involved in the alliance’s activities present a security threat, Shoigu said. Earlier on Tuesday, a senior Russian diplomat said contacts had already begun between Moscow and Washington on the issue of security guarantees that Russia is seeking, and there was a possibility that the sides would reach an understanding.

2022 must be year to Pak’s decision to join America’s ‘war on end Covid-19, says WHO terror’ not made in public interest: Imran
G E N E VA , D E C 2 1 (IANS): Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), has called on the world to pull together to end the Covid-19 pandemic within the next year. Addressing reporters here on Monday, Tedros said the “fastest way” to get back to normal is to make “hard decisions,” this festive season amid the Omicron Covid-19 variant’s quick spread. “”Canceling an event is better than canceling a life. It is better to cancel now and celebrate later than to celebrate now and mourn later,” he added. “All of us want to get back to normal... We need to protect ourselves now,” Xinhua news agency quoted the WHO chief as further saying. He also asked the governments to exercise maximum caution in the coming weeks and avoid events with large gatherings.

Since the Omicron variant was first discovered in South Africa, it has now been reported in 89 countries and the number of cases is doubling in 1.5 to three days in areas with community transmission, according to the WHO. The new variant is not more severe than the Delta variant, but is possibly more contagious and resistant to vaccines. ISLAMABAD, DEC 21 (PTI): Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday regretted Pakistan’s decision to join America’s 20-yearlong ‘war on terror’ in Afghanistan by calling it “self-inflicted wound” and a decision made for the sake of money and not for public interest. Khan, who had long been critical of Pakistan’s participation in the about two-decades long war, claimed that he was close to the decision-makers in 2001 when the then military ruler, Gen Pervez Musharraf, decided to become part of the ‘war on terror’. “And so, I am well aware of what considerations there were behind the decision. Unfortunately, the people of Pakistan were not a consideration,” Khan said while addressing the officers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Imran Khan
here. “The considerations, instead, were the same as in the 1980s, when we participated in the Afghan jihad,” he said, referring to the Soviet-Afghan war, which was then dubbed as “holy war”. “We ourselves are responsible... as we let [others] use us, sacrificed the reputation of our country for aid and made a foreign policy that went against the public interest [and was devised] for money.” He termed the ‘war
on terror’ for Pakistan a “self-inflicted wound” and added that “we cannot blame anyone else for this outcome (of the war).” Khan in the past had often cited that Pakistan suffered more than 80,000 deaths and economic losses of over USD 100-billion as a result of the 20 years of war. Talking about the latest situation in Afghanistan, Khan said that it was a “big atrocity” that a man-made crisis was being created “when it is known that unfreezing Afghanistan’s accounts and liquidity will avert the crisis.” He said that addressing the situation in Afghanistan was important for Pakistan as being its neighbour, it could be hit badly due to the crisis. He said that Pakistan would continue to provide assistance to Afghanistan in these difficult times.

Queen cancels traditional Christmas plans amid Omicron
LONDON, DEC 21 (PTI): Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has been forced to call off traditional Christmas plans at her Sandringham estate in Norfolk, eastern England, and will stay on at Windsor Castle amidst a surge in coronavirus cases being driven by the Omicron variant of COVID-19. On Monday, she took what Buckingham Palace referred to as a “personal decision” to also call off plans to travel to Sandringham, where members of the royal family gather for church on Christmas morning. The 95-year-old monarch had already called off an annual pre-Christmas lunch tradition for royal family members due to a surge in coronavirus cases being driven by the Omicron variant of COVID-19. “It reflects a precautionary approach,” Buckingham Palace aides were quoted as saying. It is the second year the pandemic has caused the cancellation of the Queen’s traditional Christmas trip to Sandringham and the first without her husband Prince Philip, who passed away in April. The couple had spent Christmas together last year at Windsor Castle in Berkshire, south-east England. This year, family members are expected to visit the monarch over the Christmas period at the castle and “all appropriate guidelines” will be followed, the palace said.

BEIJING, DEC 21 (PTI): China on Tuesday reacted angrily to the US move to appoint Indian-origin diplomat Uzra Zeya as America’s Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, saying it will never recognise her designation as it amounted to interference in its internal affairs. While designating Zeya as Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that she has been tasked with promoting “substantive dialogue” between China and the Dalai Lama or his representatives in support of a negotiated agreement on Tibet. Responding to questions on Zeya’s appointment, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a media briefing here that Tibetan affairs “are purely China’s domestic affairs. They brook no foreign interference”.
“I would like to stress that since the peaceful liberation of Tibet 70 years ago Tibet has experienced social harmony, economic prosperity and religious and cultural development”. “People there lead a happy life (and) there is no need for certain US individuals to worry and there is no room for their criticism. If the US politicians can’t find anything better to do perhaps they should pay some attention to serious racial discrimination and human rights problems at home,” he said. The US should appoint Special Coordinator, not for Tibetan issues but to probe the genocide of American Indians, human rights affairs of the ethnic minorities and the “botched COVID-19 response” resulting in a heavy death toll, he said. Zeya, who was once posted in New Delhi during her diplomatic career, had quit the foreign service in 2018 in protest against the policies of then-president Donald Trump.

adonna is back in the studio and will be releasing new music next year. The 63-year-old hitmaker teased her 17m Instagram followers by letting them know she was in the studio alongside Swae Lee and Lauren D’Elia amongst others as they recorded “surprises for the new year.” She captioned her post: “So great to be back in the studio making Music again. Surprises in the
New Year @swaelee @ laurendelia @jozzy @ burberry.”(sic). The ‘Material Girl’ hitmaker - who has released 14 studio albums over her decades-long career - is reportedly re-recording her hit song ‘Frozen’ with the 28-year-old star after the song had a resurgence in popularity due to a viral remix on TikTok. A source told The Sun: “Madonna has always been an artist who has adapted
and moved with the times, which is why she is still proving popular after almost 40 years. The remix [of ‘Frozen’] has been used on loads of TikTok videos and she is hoping that by getting Swae Lee involved it will help the song reach new audiences.” The song appeared originally appeared on her album ‘Ray of Light’, which has sold in excess of 16 million copies since its release in 1998. The source added: “It has been a bit of a scramble to get things sorted but they ideally want to get it out as soon as possible.” Swae Lee - who worked with Madge on her last studio album ‘Madame X’ - previously spoke of his “excitement” at getting to collaborate with the Queen of Pop. He told Variety: “I was very excited when Madonna approached me,” he said. “It was dope to hear that she loved MY music, you know what I’m saying?.” (Contactmusic)

he first text message ever sent, reading “Merry Christmas,” was sold on Tuesday for 107,000 euros ($121,000) as a ‘Non-Fungible Token’ at a Paris auction house. The text, which was sent on Dec. 3, 1992, was put up for auction by the British telecoms company Vodafone. Vodafone engineer Neil Papworth sent the SMS from his computer to a manager in the United Kingdom, who received it on his 2-kg (4 lb) “Orbitel” telephone - similar to a desk phone but cordless and with a handle. “They were in the middle of end-of-year events so he sent him the message ‘Merry Christmas’,” said Maximilien Aguttes, head of development for the Aguttes Auction House. Non-Fungible Tokens,
or NFTs, are a type of digital asset that has surged in popularity this year, with NFT artworks selling for millions of dollars. Traded since around 2017, these digital objects, which encompass images, video, music and text, exist on blockchain, a record of transactions kept on networked computers. Each NFT has a unique digital signature. The selling of intangible goods is not legal in France and so the auction house has packaged the text message in a digital frame, displaying the code and communication protocol, Aguttes said. The buyer will receive the replica of the original communication protocol that transmitted the SMS and proceeds will go to the United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR. (Reuters)

TikTok expected to rank as 3rd largest social network: Report

new forecast has claimed that short video platform TikTok is expected to become the world’s thirdlargest social network in 2022. The report by Insider Intelligence -- the firm previously known as eMarketer -- predicts that TikTok will reach 755.0 million monthly users in 2022, after seeing 59.8 per cent growth in 2020, followed by 40.8 per cent growth in 2021, reports TechCrunch reported on Monday. “The rise of TikTok is especially challenging for Snapchat, with which it competes head-to-head for the youth audience,” Insider Intelligence principal analyst, Debra Aho Williamson was quoted as saying by the website.
“Although TikTok does not share much similarity to Twitter, its massive size relative to the more-established platform is a clear reflection of the addictive nature of TikTok’s content,” she added. Meta-owned Facebook, as of its most recent earnings, reported 2.91 billion monthly active users after seeing 6 per cent year-over-year growth. And recently, photo-sharing platform Instagram employees leaked its network had surpassed 2 billion monthly users, up from the 1 billion monthly user milestone reported in June 2018. However, the forecast is referencing its own 2022 predictions, which uses a slightly different set of calculations. The firm has
its own definition of a monthly active user that may differ from those of each company it analyses, the report said. For example, it only counts users who log in at least once a month consistently over a calendar year period, and it attempts to weed out the fake accounts from its estimates. This is meant to provide clients with a more consistent “apples to apples” comparison across all platforms. (IANS)

ATKMB beat NE Utd to register 1st win
FATORDA (GOA), DEC 21 (IANS): Juan Ferrando got off to a winning start as ATK Mohun Bagan coach after the Kolkata side registered a thrilling 3-2 win against NorthEast United in the Indian Super League game at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday. Ferrando jumped ship from FC Goa to Mohun Bagan after the Mariners let go of Antonio Lopez Habas in a dramatic turn of events over the last week. During the match, Ferrando looked unfazed by the noise around him and went about his job but was rocked early on as VP Suhair gave NorhEast United the lead in the 2nd minute. Hugo Boumous (53rd, 76th) scored a brace after Liston Colaco (45th) equalised for Bagan but Mashoor Shereef (87th) got the Highlanders in the game late on. In the end, the Kolkata side held firm and recorded their first win in four matches. Mohun Bagan now have 11 points from seven games.

NorthEast United remain in the ninth spot with seven points from eight matches. Stung by the early setback, Mohun Bagan upped the ante and should have pulled level but for Manvir Singh who fired over the bar from inside the box. Roy Krishna had a couple of half-chances thereafter but good reflexes from Mirshad Michu in the NorthEast goal and Krishna’s inefficiency keep the ball in target kept the score to 1-0. For the Highlanders,
seasoned defender Gurjinder Kumar got injured in the 26th minute and had to be replaced by Tondonba Singh. Tyrese Haliburton had a team-high 24 points for the Kings, who were without six players -- including De’Aaron Fox and Davion Mitchell -- for COVID reasons and Richaun Holmes due to an eye injury. Jazz 112, Hornets 102 Rudy Gobert scored 23 points and grabbed 21 rebounds, Bojan Bogdanovic also scored 23 points and Donovan Mitchell dropped in 21 to help Utah fend off a furious rally by Charlotte for a tense victory in Salt Lake City. The Jazz led by 17 points with about 8 1/2 minutes remaining -- and by as many as 22 points in
the second quarter -- before the Hornets went on a tear and eventually took the lead with 3:30 left. Utah, however, closed out strong to avoid a third home loss in four nights. Terry Rozier sparked the Hornets’ comeback, scoring 14 of his 20 points in the final 8:10. Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges each scored 21 points, with Bridges pulling down 11 rebounds and Ball dishing out 11 assists. Bulls 133, Rockets 118 DeMar DeRozan scored a game-high 26 points and Coby White followed with 24 to lead six players in double figures as host Chicago cruised past Houston for its second vic-
goal kick and the ball fell to Krishna who swung in a delightful cross for Colaco to head into the far corner. After the halftime breather, Mohun Bagan decided to go up a gear and Boumous made it 2-1 soon after the restart to underline their intent. NorthEast United failed to clear their lines for too long, leading to Subhasish Bose cutting the ball back from the left byline for Boumous to outfox the defender with a lovely piece of skill and tap home.

Guardiola confirms punishment for Grealish and Foden LO N D O N, D E C 2 1 (IANS): Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Jack Grealish and Phil Foden were both left out of the matchday squad against Newcastle United on December 19 for disciplinary reasons. Grealish and Foden were outstanding in Manchester City’s drubbing of Leeds United on December 15. After the match, they visited a bar and Guardiola’s staff were unhappy with their condition the following day. BBC reported this with Guardiola quoted in the article as saying he keeps a close eye on his players’ behaviour off the pitch. After their pictures appeared in the media, Guardiola dropped Jack Grealish and Phil Foden. The two England internationals have been key players for Guardiola’s side, though it’s clear the Spanish tactician expects very high standards from everyone in his squad. Speaking about their absence from the Newcastle game, Guardiola said, “I pay a lot of attention to behaviour on and off the pitch. And when off the pitch is not proper they are not going to play. So they have to be focused all the time”.

ty), Raiki Fujishima (2nd minute), Yoshiki Kirishita (14th), Kosei Kawabe (35th) and Ryoma Ooka (41st).
