Repealing of AFSPA needs a different approach: Army chief
NEW DELHI, JAN 20 (AGENCIES): Army Chief General MM Naravane said that the argument on repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) needs a different approach, wherein the Disturbed Areas status of states needs to change. Taking the example of Tripura, where the act was repealed, Naravane said that repealing AFSPA from Nagaland is a decision of the state government and Centre but added that the Army will be ‘most happy’ if the Army is relieved from its policing duties in disturbed areas so that it can focus on its primary role of fighting a conventional war. “We (Army) are only the instruments in implementing AFSPA. Booster dose effective against Omicron: Lancet LONDON, JAN 20 (PTI): A third dose of COVID-19 vaccine increases the level of antibodies that can effectively neutralize the Omicron variant of coronavirus, according to a study published in The Lancet journal. Researchers from Francis Crick Institute and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), UK, found that antibodies generated in people who had received only two doses of either the AstraZeneca or the Pfizer vaccine were less able to neutralize Omicron as compared to Alpha and Delta variants. They also found that antibody levels dropped off in the first three months following the second dose
but a third ‘booster’ dose raised levels of antibodies that effectively neutralise the Omicron variant. The study found that in people who had received the Pfizer vaccine for all three doses, antibody levels against Omicron after a third dose were similar to those previously reached against Delta after only two shots. Overall, antibody levels were nearly 2.5 times higher against Omicron after three doses compared to after two jabs, according to the researchers. Higher levels of antibodies against Omicron were also found in people who received two doses of either vaccine and also reported previously having COVID-19 symptoms, com-
pared to those who didn’t have disease symptoms in the past. While levels of antibodies alone do not predict vaccine effectiveness, they are a very good indicator of protection against severe COVID-19, it said. The study confirms that three doses of vaccine are essential to boost antibodies to quantifiable levels and maximize the amount of protection against severe disease and hospitalization. “People who have queued outside vaccination centres should be reassured that a vaccine booster is the best way of protecting them from Omicron,” said Emma Wall, an infectious diseases consultant at NIHR.

As per state wise bamboo bearing area under different classes in recorded forest area (RFA), Nagaland has 172 sq km of pure bamboo area, 772 sq km of dense bamboo area, 2,917 sq km of scattered and 86 sq km
of regeneration of bamboo. On analysing the forest area of different States according to bamboo density, it has been observed that the pure bamboo brakes are found in less than 1%, dense bamboos in about 4% and scattered bamboos in about 12% of the RFA. Nagaland gets Rs.541.02 cr in tax devolution
DIMAPUR, JAN 20 (NPN): Nagaland would receive Rs. 541.02 crore from an advance instalment of tax devolution and regular devolution for the month of January 2022, which was released by the Centre on Thursday. The finance ministry released Rs 95,082 crore to states, which includes an advance instalment of tax devolution of Rs 47,541 crore. According to the finance ministry, this release was in addition to the regular devolution for the month of January 2022. As per the State-wise break-up of the amounts, Nagaland would receive a total of Rs.541.02 crore, which includes Rs.270.51 crore as regular monthly instalment for January 2022 and Rs.270.51 crore as advance instalment in January 2022.

ANPWDFWA warns of indefinite stir DIMAPUR, JAN 20 (NPN): All Nagaland PWD Field Worker’s Association (ANPWDFWA) PWD (R&B) Housing and National Highway has threatened to launch indefinite agitation if pending salaries of work-charged employees under B, C and D categories were not released within January 31, 2022. In a press release, ANPWDFWA president K Atovi Awomi and general secretary Zebemo Ngullie have directed the unit office bearers to be prepared for the proposed agitation.

DIMAPUR: Wokha District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) deliberated on district healthcare issues during its monthly meeting held at the Conference Hall of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Wokha on January 20.
According to DIPR report, at the meeting chaired by DC and vice chair man DPDB Wokha, Orenthung Lotha, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Wokha, Dr.Tumchobeni Kikon presented the district Co-
vid-19 scenario. The CMO informed that the oxygen plant at Dr. Motsuo Memorial District Hospital remained nonfunctional due to shortage of power supply and sought the intervention of the board.
The Chief Medical Officer also requested all concerned to spread awareness and encourage and motivate public to get vaccinated as the department would be conducting colony-wise vaccination drive from next week.
While deliberating on power issue, the DC said that in-spite of repeated effort from the Wokha DPDB and DTF for Covid-19, installation of separate transformer for the hospital remained unsuccessful. The Deputy Commissioner said the board has requested the department concerned to install the same at the earliest as various health care equipment/facilities installed at the hospital has become non-functional. M/S district hospital while briefing on the preparedness status on Covid-19 stated that at present the hospital has 10 ICUs, four isolation and nine beds. During the meeting the board also recommended the registration of society- NNM Foundation, Pangti Village for consideration to higher authority. DIMAPUR: Several shops, two houses and a hostel were razed by fire which broke out from a general store on January 19 at Aghunato Town, Zunheboto. According to DIPR report, several shops including a general store, garment shop, hostel, household appliances shop and two houses were destroyed in the fire. It said six households were affected and properties worth crores of rupees were destroyed by the fire. The report said the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. Meanwhile, in a joint press statement, Aghunato Town GBs and Lukikhe Village GBs claimed that the fire broke out at 8:30 pm from one of

Chairman Aghunato GB Association, GB Vikishe Awomi; GB Hoshito Viiye colony and GB Akavi Katty Lukihe village stated that the inferno destroyed properties worth crores of rupees and six households. They claimed that besides the general store, a garment shop, one hostel attached and appliance and household goods shop including two households were destroyed in the fire. The GBs claimed that the hostel attached to the shop lost properties and cash amounting to Rs. 50 to 60 lakh, and all important documents for both students and owner of the hostel, Nipato Yeptho were also
destroyed. A two storey building belonging to Kakiye Yeptho of Lukikhe village was also completely razed down to ashes. The damage could have been controlled or lessened but due to lack of fire service, the fire went beyond control leading to a massive destruction and endangered many lives, the GBs stated. However, the GBs have acknowledged the Fire Service department from Zunheboto, which was 35 km away from Aghunato, rushed to the spot and brought the fire under controlled. They also acknowledged the brave general public of Aghunato Town for their timely intervention.

DIMAPUR: Pfutsero Police personnel along with D Coy 9th NAP (IR) Bn, during routine vehicle checking on January 19 at Razeba gate, located about 2km away from Pfutero town, intercepted a car and recovered approximately 360 kg of contraband ganja. According to DIPR report, the duty party intercepted a vehicle (Maruti

Haiying said the government was ready to promote tourism sector in the region and particularly advised the youth to contribute and create tourism friendly place. Thangou said, Khaozaosie Hok-Ah marks the end of all agricultural activities of the year, a time to rest and to give thanks to God for the bountiful harvest and triumph over adversities all throughout the year. Folksong was presented by Khiamniungan Menyiu Hoikam, Noklak town unit; invocation was pronounced by Hempao Lam, ES KBCA and benediction by pastor LBC NT, A. Penglang. DIMAPUR: Nagaland Press Association (NPA), Kohima Press Club (KPC) and Dimapur Press Club (DPC) have expressed grief on the demise of Ruuluotonuo Theunuo, treasurer of KPC, who passed away on January 19 at Referral Hospital, Dimapur. In a condolence message, NPA stated that her (Theunuo) untimely demise has left the press fraternity devastated, but will always be remembered for her contribution. NPA further conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that Almighty grant solace to them and the departed soul to rest in peace. KPC: Members of Kohima Press Club (KPC) have mourned the passing away of one of its members—Rüülhoutuonuo Theünuo, who held the post of treasurer till the time of her untimely demise. She was 49. KPC in a condolence note, described late Theunuo as an amazing human being, who selflessly and diligently worked behind the scenes and made a lasting impression on everybody who knew her. Ruutuou served the KPC as an executive member for three different tenures- as treasurer from 2012 to 2014; she was re-elected to the same post for the tenure 2014 to 2016; and because of her dedication, sincerity and genuine concern for the press fraternity, the press club members elected her again for the third term in 2019, a position she held till today. KPC conveyed condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace. Dr.Wati Aier on Thursday, at Tourist Lodge, Dimapur. Releasing the book, Rev Aier dwelled on the subject of identity, culture, and globalisation, stating that identity was not universal, but relative and plural. Maintaining that many Nagas of Nagaland might have perception of Naga identity comprising of 10 to 12 tribes, he however asserted it as “incorrect”. He added that while Nagas were fond of talking about cultural identity and past, he reminded that the present should be in relation with future and past, and should not dictate the present. He termed cultural identity “ontological” claiming it as alive and not monolithic and cited that the term “tribal” was indeed “colonial”. It cautioned that high brucellosis prevalence in animals poses greater risk of disease transmission to animal handlers, veterinarians and is a menace to livestock farming community and butchers. Indian Army seeks return of Arunachal youth
ITANAGAR, JAN 20 (IANS): The Indian Army through hotline has contacted the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) and sought return of abducted Arunachal Pradesh teenager Miram Taron, defence sources said on Thursday. A defence PRO tweeted: “17-yr-old youth Miram Tarom of Zido, Arunachal Pradesh, was reportedly captured by the PLA across the LAC. On receipt of info, Indian Army imdtly contacted PLA through a hotline. Assistance from PLA has been sought to locate and return him as per protocol.” An Arunachal Pradesh government official said here that the state government had also sought the Defence Ministry’s intervention to ensure the safe return of the youth. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said that the Defence Ministry through diplomatic channels took up the matter with the Chinese authority.
Miram Tarom “I am hopeful that the youth would be released and return to his village soon,” the Chief Minister told the media on Thursday. Arunachal Pradesh Health and Family Welfare Minister Alo Libang, also a local BJP MLA, said that he is optimistic that the youth would be returned very soon. The Chinese Army reportedly abducted Tarom from the Indian territory where China had constructed 3-4 km road in 2018. The incident was reported from Upper Siang district on January 18. His friend, who managed to escape, reported the
matter to the authorities and brought it to the notice of Tapir Gao, an MP from the Arunachal East parliamentary constituency. “Chinese #PLA has abducted Sh Miram Taron, 17 years of Zido village on Tuesday from inside Indian territory, Lungta Jor area (China built 3-4 kms road inside India in 2018) under Siyungla area (Bishing village) of Upper Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh. His friend escaped from the PLA and reported to the authorities. All the agencies of the Central government are requested to step up for his early release,” Tapir Gao had tweeted on Wednesday. In September 2020, the Chines PLA had kidnapped five boys from Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district before releasing them after about a week. The villagers in the region are always forced to trek through the remote mountainous areas of Arunachal Pradesh due to the lack of proper roads.
Meghalaya celebrates 50 years of statehood today

There has been consistent demand from NGOs, student unions and the state government as well for implementation of the Inner Line Pass (ILP) in the predominantly tribal state, to ward off immigration of outsiders. Cutting across party lines, all members of the Meghalaya legislative assembly had unanimously
adopted a resolution urging the Centre to implement ILP in the state and also accord constitutional recognition to the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo languages by including these in the 8th Schedule to the Constitution. The state, which shares a long stretch of international border with neighbouring Bangladesh, is also strategically placed for international trade, which is yet to be fully realized due to several bottlenecks. Sanjay Dutt can be seen taking his producer-actor Rahul Mittra on a virtual journey across Arunachal Pradesh, exhibiting its rich heritage, traditions, and culture. Arunachal Governor Brig Dr. BD Mishra launched the campaign featuring Sanjay Dutt to mark 50 years of Arunachal Pradesh’s statehood on Thursday. The event was held at the Ziro’s Padi Yubbe stadium and it also marked the commencement of a month-long festival starting from 20 January onwards.

Lurinjyoti Gogoi said in a statement. He claimed that the Himanta Sarma government is taking the decision to give away land to Meghalaya “in a hurry as per the political instructions of Union Home Minister Amit Shah”. Earlier, Congress, the principal opposition party in the state, had called for more discussion on the matter, particularly in the Assembly. The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti has also opposed the idea of Assam giving its “constitutional land” in favour of Meghalaya without consulting the people living in those areas. The Assam cabinet had on Wednesday approved the recommendations of the regional committees formed by the two states to resolve border disputes in six areas in the first phase. Three committees each were formed by the two state governments in August
2021 after two rounds of talks between Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma to resolve the vexed issue in a phased manner. As per the joint final set of recommendations given by the committees, out of 36.79 sq km of disputed area taken up for settlement in the first phase Assam will get full control over 18.51 sq km and Meghalaya on 18.28 sq km. Sarma and Sangma are scheduled to meet the union home minister in the national capital on Thursday evening with the recommendations of the committees so that the Centre takes the matter forward. On January 18, Sarma had held separate meetings with leaders of different political parties of the state and also with All Assam Students’ Union along with delegates of Rabha, Gorkha, Garo and Bodo students’ unions on the issue.

The first of its kind Mobile Diagnostic Laboratory (I-LAB) is capable of performing both RT-PCR and ELISA. Dr Jitendra Singh said, the Lab developed with the support from the Department of Biotechnology, govt of India, is meant to provide COVID testing access to rural and remote parts of North Eastern Region of India. He said, the unit has biosafety facility and is capable of performing both RT-PCR and ELISA tests and this facility can also be utilised for testing of other infectious diseases like TB, HIV, and therefore will remain relevant even in
post-COVID times. Exuding confidence that India will emerge triumphant from the current pandemic situation, Dr Jitendra Singh said that PM Narendra Modi is personally monitoring the COVID situation on a daily basis and taking effective steps for pandemic control activities. In asymptomatic and mild cases, antimicrobials are not recommended for therapy or prophylaxis, the ministry said. In moderate and severe cases, antimicrobials should not be prescribed unless there is clinical suspicion of a superadded infection, the ministry said. In case of septic shock, empirical antimicrobials, according to body weight, are frequently added to cover all likely pathogens based on clinical judgement, patient host factors, local epidemiology and antimicrobial policy of the hospital, it said. The guidelines stated that steroids are not indicated and are harmful in asymptomatic and mild cases of Covid-19. They are indicated only in hospitalised severe and critically ill Covid-19 cases under strict supervision, the guidelines said. Steroids should be used at the right time, in right dose and for the right duration, they stated. Corticosteroids may be used in rapidly progressive moderate and all severe cases, such as dexamethasone 0.15 mg/kg, maximum dose six mg once a day or methylprednisolone 0.75 mg/kg, maximum dose 30 mg once a day, the guidelines stated. They can be continued for five to seven days and
tapered up to 10-14 days, depending on clinical assessment on daily basis, they stated. Steroids should be avoided in the first three to five days since onset of symptoms as it prolongs viral shedding, the guidelines stated. Anticoagulants are not indicated routinely and all hospitalized children should be evaluated for risk of developing thrombosis and monitored for development of thrombosis, the ministry said. As far post-Covid-19 care is concerned, the guidelines stated that children with asymptomatic infection or mild disease should receive routine childcare, appropriate vaccination (if eligible), nutrition counselling, and psychological support on follow up. In addition to the above, parents or caregivers of children, who suffered moderate to severe Covid, during discharge from hospital should be counselled regarding monitoring for persistence or worsening respiratory difficulty and explained the indications for bringing the child back to the facility, the guidelines stated. Children who develop any organ specific dysfunction during hospital stay or subsequently, should receive appropriate care, they said. These guidelines are dynamic, and will be reviewed and updated, on availability of new evidence, the ministry stated.

(From p-1) PTI: Use of antivirals or monoclonal antibodies is not recommended for those less than 18 years of age, irrespective of severity of Covid infection, and if steroids are used, they should be tapered over 10 to 14 days, subject to clinical improvement, the government said on Thursday. In the ‘Revised Comprehensive Guidelines for Management of Covid-19 in Children and Adolescents (below 18 years)’, the health ministry also said that masks are not recommended for children aged five years and below. Those aged 6-11 years may wear it depending on the ability of the child to use a mask safely and appropriately under direct supervision of parents, it said. Those aged 12 and above should wear a mask under the same conditions as adults, the ministry said. The guidelines were reviewed by a group of experts in view of the current surge that is mainly attributed to the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, which is also a variant of concern. The available data from other countries suggests that the disease caused by the Omicron variant is less severe. However, there is a need for a careful watch, as the current wave evolves, the ministry said. It categorised cases as asymptomatic, mild, moderate and severe. According to the guide-

ot only is getting to identify and specify the coronavirus so confusing as virologists continue to announce new variants discovered almost every quarterly, but apparently even the policy on covid-19 by the government of India has been no less confusing. The Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR), the government managed health think tank is the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world. The Governing Body of ICMR is presided over by the Union Health Minister. It is assisted in scientific and technical matters by a Scientific Advisory Board comprising eminent experts in different biomedical disciplines. The Board, in its turn, is assisted by a series of Scientific Advisory Groups, Scientific Advisory Committees, Expert Groups, Task Forces, Steering Committees etc. which evaluate and monitor different research activities of the Council. ICMR is in a powerful position that’s made it a controversial face of India’s struggles with Covid-19. As the ICMR has acted as a key medical adviser to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Health Ministry, it’s increasingly drawn criticism from the nation’s doctors and independent scientists, who have questioned its drug recommendations and the group’s lack of transparency on data related to variants identified in India that are now spreading globally. ICMR had created controversy in 2021 by advising use of hydroxychloroquine as covid therapy. ICMR, a controversial face of India’s struggles with covid, has had a chequered record since the pandemic. This is because ICMR is an advisory body that also has to take the advise of the government. That is why the government and the ICMR have also been accused of withholding data about Covid and its variants that left physicians in the country flying blind, and of promoting a homegrown vaccine before it had passed key clinical trials. Such unscientific and hasty policy announcements have led The Lancet comment “ICMR, a controversial face of India’s struggles with Covid.” Indeed the ICMR has been singled out by experts for straying from scientific evidence, appearing at worst politically motivated and at best overly optimistic. In the recent instance, ICMR advised the Centre on new guidelines, in which asymptomatic patients do not need to undergo a test. ICMR also advised the Centre that, contacts of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients do not require a test unless they have comorbidities or are aged above 60. ICMR’s new advisory waives off testing requirements for many including those who have been in contact with confirmed Covid-19 cases and those planning inter-state domestic travels. The ICMR guideline may have been issued to restrict unnecessary testing. However, it only managed to send the wrong message across states that there was no need of testing unless there are symptoms. This could also be having an impact on the national case count, whose trajectory has flattened in the last few days. The Centre then reversed its decision by asking state health departments in the country to increase testing, highlighting a decline in several states and Union Territories over the last few days. The ICMR’s inclination to be over cautious has only caused uneasiness within the scientific community and that itself is a serious issue when India is facing a huge surge in covid cases.

Being born again from above is an enduring, perpetual, and eternal beginning. It provides a freshness all the time in thinking, talking, and living— a continual surprise of the life of God. Staleness is an indication that something in our lives is out of step with God. We say to ourselves, “I have to do this thing or it will never get done.” That is the first sign of staleness. Do we feel fresh this very moment or are we stale, frantically searching our minds for something to do? Freshness is not the result of obedience; it comes from the Holy Spirit. Obedience keeps us “in the light as He is in the light…” (1 John 1:7). Jealously guard your relationship with God. Jesus prayed “that they may be one just as We are one” — with nothing in between (John 17:22). Keep your whole life continually open to Jesus Christ. Don’t pretend to be open with Him. Are you drawing your life from any source other than God Himself? If you are depending on something else as your source of freshness and strength, you will not realize when His power is gone. Being born of the Spirit means much more than we usually think. It gives us new vision and keeps us absolutely fresh for everything through the never-ending supply of the life of God.

ell, it’s official: 2 0 2 1 wa s o n e of the planet’s seven hottest years since records began, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) declared this week. The year was about 1.11 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels – the seventh year in a row that the average global temperature rise edged over 1 degree Celsius. The WMO report echoes two separate official US analyses released last week that found 2021 was the sixth hottest year on record, tied with 2018. For many of us in Australia and overseas, however, 2021 may have felt generally colder and rainier than usual. This is because of the effect of back-to-back La Nina events, a natural phenomenon that brings cooler, rainier weather in our region. The fact 2021 was among the world’s hottest years despite these cooling forces shows just how strong the long-term warming trend is. Indeed, 2021 may well be the coldest year we’ll ever experience again. Let’s reflect on the year that was, and what we can expect for this year and beyond.

La Nina dampens the heat, but not enough 2021 started and ended with La Nina events. While it’s unusual for this climate phenomenon to occur two years in a row, it’s not unheard of. In La Nina years, we see the global average temperature decrease by about 0.1-0.2degree Celsius. So how does it work? During La Nina we see cool water from deep in the Pacific Ocean rise to the surface. This happens when wind strength increases at the equator, which pushes warmer water to the west and allows more cool water to rise off the coast of South America. Essentially, the net transfer of energy from the surface to the deeper ocean brings the average global surface temperature down. While La Nina is a natural phenomenon (it’s not the result of human activities), human-caused climate change remains a constant underlying influence that sets a long-term warming trend. The La Nina conditions of 2021 took the edge off the global average surface temperature. Parts of Australia, southern Africa
and northwestern North America saw cooler temperatures during 2021 compared to recent years as the effects of La Nina kicked in. Unless we have another strong La Nina very soon, we’re going to keep seeing even hotter years than 2021 for the foreseeable future until net global greenhouse gas emissions cease. A year with massive, extreme events As the world warms we’re becoming more accustomed to extreme events, especially severe heatwaves. This was no different for 2021, which was characterised one incredibly extreme heat event in particular, which occurred in western North America. In late June and early July, heat built over northwest United States and southwest Canada. New temperature records were set across the region – at some sites, by several degrees. A staggering 49.6 degree Celsius was recorded in Lytton, British Columbia, which is Canada’s highest temperature measurement. This heatwave was disastrous, including in Seattle and Portland where death rates spiked. Soon after, wildfire destroyed the town
of Lytton. While many other parts of the world also saw heatwaves, including significant events in Europe and Asia, the western North American heatwave stands out. The scale of this event would have been virtually impossible without human-caused climate change. Severe floods were also a feature of 2021 in many places. Short bursts of extreme rainfall that bring flash flooding are becoming more frequent and intense due to the human influence on the climate. We saw especially devastating events in central Europe and in China in July. Australia’s coolest year since 2012 Australia not only experienced back-to-back La Nina events, but also the negative Indian Ocean Dipole – a bit like the Indian Ocean’s version of La Nina, bringing cool, rainier weather to Australia during winter and spring. Both left their mark, with Australia experiencing its coolest year since 2012 and its wettest year since 2016. And still, 2021 was warmer than any year in the observational series prior
to 1980. In fact, Australia is warming faster than the world as a whole, with Australian temperatures already up about 1.4 degree Celsius since 1910. We also saw major floods in Australia that inundated eastern New South Wales in March, and Queensland more recently. However, the influence of climate change on extreme rainfall in Australia is less clear than for other parts of the world because Australia has a high climate variability - swinging from drought to flooding rains and back again. Another reason is because our major floods are often caused by extreme rain that falls for several days, and the effect of climate change on this type of rain is difficult to unpick. What’s in store for 2022 and beyond We can’t forecast the weather beyond about ten days, but we can make a couple of forecasts for 2022 with confidence. First, while 2022 may experience a slight cooling influence from the ongoing La Niña, it will still be among our warmest years. To have an individual year as cool as those we ex-
perienced as recently as the 1990s is exceptionally unlikely due to our high greenhouse gas emissions. Second, there will be more extreme heat events somewhere on Earth this year, because our influence on the climate has greatly increased the odds of record-breaking heatwaves occurring. Even if we start acting on climate change with more urgency, we will experience more frequent and intense heatwaves in coming years. This means we need to build greater resilience to these extremes and adapt cities and towns to a hotter world. Beyond 2022, we know we will see continued global warming until we stop emitting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. And with global carbon dioxide emissions rebounding to nearrecord levels in 2021 after a brief drop in 2020 from the pandemic, we’re a long way off stopping global warming. Rapid decarbonisation is needed to reduce further warming of the planet. It’s not too late to avoid the most dangerous climate change impacts. eed conversion ratio or FCR is a measure of an animal’s efficiency to convert feed into increased body mass such as milk for dairy cows and goats, eggs for laying birds, meat for meat animals such as broilers, goats, pigs, etc., wool for wool animals like sheep, goats, rabbits, etc. From the FCR a farmer can know whether his animal are efficiently converting the feed into milk, meat, eggs, wool, etc after consuming the given amount of feeds to his animals. FCR is easily calculated from a simple formula where FCR = Feed eaten/ animal weight gain. The lower the value of FCR, the better feed utilized because lower FCR simply means lower feed cost. For example, a broiler bird having an FCR of 1:2 means that to gain 1 kilo of body weight the broiler birds has consumed 2 kilo of feeds. Similarly, a broiler bird having a FCR
1:1.5 means that to gain 1 kilo of body weight the broiler birds has consumed 1.5 kilo of feed. So, here broiler with FCR of 1:1.5 is more efficient in converting feed into meat and saves more feeds which directly reduces the cost of rearing broiler. The ratio of 1:1 is considered the best in Animal Husbandy but it is impossible to maintain such ratio as it is impossible to fetch 1 kilo of broiler meat with 1 kilo of feed. FCR for different animals 1. Poultry: Average FCR is 1:1.5. A standard broiler chicken has FCR of 1:1.3 to 1:1.6 2. Sheep: 1:4 to 1:5 on high quality feed, 1:5 to 1:6 on good quality feed and 1:6 when fed low quality feed. 3. Cattle: 1:12.5 4. Pigs: 1:3 to 1:3.2 5. Delivering the keynote address at the national launch ceremony of ‘Azadi Ke Amrit Mahotsav se Swarnim Bharat Ke Ore’ virtually, Modi noted that one’s progress is aligned with the nation’s progress and stressed the need for giving importance to one’s duties for the country’s rise. He also spoke about efforts being made to tarnish India’s image, including at the international level, and said there was a need to counter them and present a proper picture of the country. Emphasising on duties, he said, “We also have to admit that in the 75 years after Independence,

KO L K ATA , J A N 2 0 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote yet another letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to withdraw the proposal to amend IAS (Cadre) Rules, 1954, as it would “create a fear psychosis among officers and impact their performance”. In the letter to the PM on the issue, her second in a week, Banerjee said the amendment will “destroy” the federal polity and basic structure of the Constitution. The BJP hit back, stating that it was the “trend” to oppose every Centre’s decision which is against the country’s federal structure. Banerjee, in her twopage missive, warned the PM of “greater movements” in case the Centre does not reconsider its decision. “I humbly urge you to kindly reconsider this move by the central government

and not to go ahead with the proposed amendments and request you not to push us to the points of greater movements on this issue to protect the soul of this great democracy that India is and has been (sic),” the CM wrote. The Union government has proposed an amendment to IAS (Cadre) rules, which would enable it to post IAS officers on

On January 13, too, the CM had written to Modi, requesting him not to go ahead with the amendment. “I’m constrained to invite your kind attention to the issue of IAS Cadre management yet again, twice in a week’s time. I had written to you on this, conveying my reservations... but I had to write again, further reiterating my points, because the central government has, meanwhile, further accentuated its stand, proposing yet another revised draft, taking the matter to further non-federal extremes,” she wrote in her letter to Modi on Thursday. (AGENCIES): The eternal flame of Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, which has not been extinguished for 50 years, will be put off on Friday, as it will be merged with the flame at the National War Memorial. The National War Memorial was inaugurated in February 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Official sources said that earlier, there was no war memorial to pay homage to all military personnel who had laid down their lives for the country in various wars and conflicts, which is why the flame was at India Gate. Now that there is a dedicated museum, the flame will be merged with the one at the National War Memorial. After the National War Memorial was set up, political and military leaders would lay wreaths at the new site, and not at India Gate. Sources said that it was felt that merging the two flames will allow it to be in one place now. The flame of Amar Jawan Jyoti was established to pay tributes to the soldiers who had died in the 1971 war. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Republic Day 1972.

WELLINGTON, JAN 20 (IANS): New Zealand’s annual food prices were 4.5 per cent higher in December 2021, the biggest annual increase since September 2011 when the annual food prices increased 4.7 per cent, the statistics department Stats NZ said on Thursday. The main contributor to this increase was higher prices for tomatoes, it said, adding tomatoes nearly doubled in price between December 2020 and December 2021, increasing 99 per cent, reports Xinhua news agency. The weighted average price of 1 kg of tomatoes increased from NZ$3.33 in December 2020 to NZ$6.61 in December 2021, consumer prices manager Katrina Dewbery said in a statement. Higher prices for tomatoes were partly offset by cheaper prices for kiwi fruit, kumara, and avocados, Dewbery said. At a more aggregated level, grocery foods had the biggest impact on the annual food prices movement, increasing 4.5 per cent. Within this, yoghurt, standard two-litre milk, and fresh eggs were the main contributors, she said. Overall food prices rose 0.6 per cent last month. This shows that food prices increased by more than they usually do in December, Dewbery said.

LAHORE, JAN 20 (PTI): A powerful bomb blast on Thursday ripped through a crowded market where Indian commodities are sold in Pakistan’s cultural capital here, killing three persons and wounding 28 others, police said. The blast took place near the Paan Mandi in the famous Anarkali market, where Indian commodities are sold. Lahore Commissioner Muhammad Usman told reporters that two people, including a nine year-old boy, were killed in the blast claimed by a Baloch insurgent group. “It was a high explosive device targeting a crowded place to ensure maximum casualties,” he said. According to the lineup for the 72nd edition, Hong’s 27th feature, ‘The Novelist’s Film’, was listed as one of the 18 movies that will vie for the Gold and Silver Bears at the festival scheduled for February 1016, reports Yonhap News Agency. It is the third consecutive year that a Hong Sangsoo film has been invited to the competition section of the Berlin fest. Hong was awarded the Silver Bear for best director for the film ‘The Woman Who Ran’ in 2020 and ‘Introduction’ won the Silver Bear for the best screenplay in 2021. The 28-year-old Spaniard has made just three appearances for the Gunners this season. Mari joined Arsenal on loan from Brazilian side Flamengo in January 2020 before making a permanent move to the club that summer. He was a Manchester City player from 2016-19, but never made a first-team appearance for the club. The centre-half was sent out on season-long loans at Girona, NAC Breda and Deportivo La Coruna, before joining Flamengo on a permanent deal in the summer of 2019.
