Sheela Khan, a bisexual better known as Queen Bee, ran the module from Lakhipur Math in Burdwan for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence or ISI and the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) of Bangladesh. She fled to Bangladesh before the security forces could raid her hideout in 2001.

Village guards rest house inaugurated at Thizama DIMAPUR: Advisor for Information & Public Relations and Village Guards, S. Keoshu Yimkhiung on Wednesday said that in his few months of taking charge as the advisor of Village Guards (VG), he observed that the VG organisation today had many loopholes in its infrastructure and development which “needs to be seriously worked out.” According to a DIPR report, he was speaking at the inaugural programme of the village guards rest house at
Thizama, Kohima. The advisor also suggested a separate directorate/HoD for the Village Guards in order to maintain a proper system in its working and functioning. He expressed hope that the rest house would benefit VG personnel and the public by providing the much-needed accommodation during their visit for official works. In his speech, minister for Health & Family Welfare, S. Pangnyu Phom said that this was a long-felt need of the VGs. With the removal of the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), Pangnyu said there would be more failures, problems and hurdles in law and order issues, and in such
a situation, the VG personnel had a responsibility toward the state. He said they would play an important role in assisting the state government and the public, especially in border areas. The minister said norms and guidelines of VGs need to be framed at the earliest and accordingly, the 21 elected members working in the VG areas submitted various representations for which the chief minister had entrusted and endorsed to the concerned department/authority to take up and expedite the matter. Presenting the technical report for VG rest house, executive engineer, CAWD, Er. IDAN to organise 2-day Edu Connect Fair in Kma Correspondent KOHIMA, APR 20 (NPN): In a bid to offer exposure for local students to educational institutions outside the State and interact with their representatives, Investment and Development Authority, Nagaland (IDAN) will organise Edu Connect Fair here on May 10 and May 11. Announcing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, IDAN chief executive officer Alemtemshi Jamir said the authority partnered with Northeast Educational Council to both identify and verify the authenticity of the institutions, including colleges and universities, that would be participating at the fair. He said so far about 40 colleges from various parts of the country had confirmed their participation. He said that the objective of the fair is to provide a platform to local students where they will be able to connect with educational institutions outside the State and at the same time learn about various courses and vocational trainings provided by institutions. He urged more institutions to come and join the fair, adding that IDAN wanted more participation of students from districts like Mon, Tuensang and other such outlying areas. Jamir said there were many educational institutions that provided free education about which Naga students were unaware, while some of these institutions even help students avail educational loans. Shops bulldozed in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri
SC intervenes to stop demolition
NEW DELHI, APR 20 (PTI): Bulldozers rolled into troubled Jahangirpuri on Wednesday morning and tore down several concrete and temporary structures close to a mosque as part of an anti-encroachment drive by the BJP-ruled civic body, days after the northwest Delhi neighbourhood was rocked by communal violence. The Supreme Court had to intervene twice to stop the drive after it took cognizance of a petition filed by Jamiat Ulama-iHind against the demolition. The area was teeming with hundreds of policemen, including anti-riot contingents, as the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) launched the operation against enroachers. In less than two hours, several shops and businesses were pulled down amid scenes of chaos, with many owners insisting their establishments had the sanction of the Delhi Development Authority and the local civic body. Politics erupted over the demolition drive, with Congress leader Rahul

Gandhi calling it “statesponsored targeting of poor and minorities”. CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat, who visited the area with the court order to stop the NDMC action, was livid. “The Supreme Court ordered status quo at 10:45 am. Our lawyers Kapil Sibal and Dushyant Dave mentioned it before the court. I have come to stop this demolition....to stop the authorities from tearing the Supreme Court order to shreds (dhajjiyan udane se rokne aayi hoon),” she said. Some distraught women sat on the road, wailing, as bulldozers smashed to the ground several shops and roadside kiosks. Streets were littered with concrete slabs and bricks, but there were no violent protests. Shop owners, whose
establishments were demolished, claimed the NDMC launched the encroachment drive without giving prior notice to them. “If you (authorities) wa n t t o p u n i s h , t h e n punish the accused who have been arrested. Why are you punishing the whole community? People have lost their livelihood,” Mohammad Rahman, whose shop was razed, said. Ganesh Gupta, who ran a juice vend, claimed the DDA had allotted the shop in 1977. “I showed them the document but nobody listened to me,” he said. The NDMC’s action came a day after Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta wrote to the mayor to identify illegal constructions of the “rioters” in Jahangirpuri and demolish them using bulldozers, raising questions
about political intention behind the action. “ S h o b h a Ya t r a k a badla liya ja raha hai (it’s an act of revenge for what had happened during the Shobha Yatra),” said Sajid Saifi whose electrical repair shop was also razed. According to locals, the anti-encroachment drive continued for an hour and half after the Supreme Court’s initial order to stop it and maintain status quo. A civic body official, requesting anonymity, said the drive continued because of the absence of a written order from the Supreme Cour t. It was stopped as soon as the order was received, the official added. Senior lawyer Dushyant Dave approached the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana for a second time after an earlier order failed to stop the civic body from continuing with the demolition. “I am sorry to mention it again...In the morning, I had mentioned the matter. Despite communicating t h e ( s t ay ) o r d e r, t h e y (authorities) are not stopping the demolition. They are saying that they have not officially received any communication. “I request you to ask the secretary-general to communicate the order to
the police commissioner and the mayor and the commissioner of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC),” Dave said, adding “it will be too late otherwise.” The Supreme Court directed the apex court’s Secretary-General to convey the earlier order to stop the demolition immediately. The bench, in the forenoon, ordered a stay on the drive and agreed to hear the petition challenging the action of the civic body allegedly aimed against the accused in Saturday’s communal riots. M ayo r R a j a I q b a l Singh insisted the drive was stopped after the Supreme Court order. “We will follow the Supreme Court orders. We have stopped the drive. We have removed only a few sacks of garbage and dirt along with a few ‘tirpal str uctures’ (temporar y structures),” Singh told PTI. He claimed it was a routine action against encroachers and not linked to the April 16 riots. The action came in the backdrop of demolition drives carried out by the BJP governments in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone and Gujarat’s Anand districts where bulldozers were used to pull down encroached properties belonging to the alleged rioters.
Demolition of India’s constitutional values: Rahul Gandhi on bulldozers
NEW DELHI, APR 20 (PTI/IANS): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday attacked the government over the use of bulldozers in violence-hit areas of Delhi and Madhya Pradesh and alleged that this is a demolition of India’s constitutional values and targeted against the poor and minorities. He also urged PM Narendra Modi to switch off “bulldozers of hate” and switch on power plants, while highlighting the shortage of coal in the country due to which power plants were being shut down. “This is a demolition of India’s constitutional values. This is state-sponsored targeting of poor and minorities. BJP must bulldoze the hatred in their hearts instead,” Gandhi said on Twitter, while sharing a picture of a speeding bulldozer on one side and the Constitution on the other. His attack came on a day bulldozers were used in Delhi to demolish structures in violence-hit areas of Jahangirpuri, a drive against encroachments which some allege is against those indulging in rioting in the area, that was later stopped with the intervention of the Supreme Court which is now hearing the case. The Congress also
Rahul Gandhi
said that “not only houses are being demolished by bulldozers, our Constitution is being demolished”. “Riding on the bulldozer of hate, the ruling
BJP is totally disturbed. These people have fallen to this low level only to divert the attention of the people from the issues of inflation and unemployment. That is why it is necessary to raise voice against this hatred,” the party said in a tweet. Several Cong ress leaders have criticised BJP government for misusing power against a certain section of people. Gandhi also shared a news report that claims that India stares at outages as coal stocks at power plants hit a low.
When will bulldozers demolish Chinese encroachments: Cong
The Congress on Wednesday attacked the Centre for not immediately stopping the demolition drive in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri and termed it as ‘brazen contempt and defiance of SC order’, and also asked for a similar action against the Chinese encroachments in Arunchal Pradesh and Ladakh. “Continuing of demolition despite Supreme Court stay order is brazen c o n t e m p t a n d a ve r y dangerous precedent of defiance set; Court must heavily come down to uphold majesty of law for sake of our Constitution!
India is not banana republic yet, that SC orders r defied like this-Shocking,” said Jaiveer Shergill Congress spokesperson. In his tweet, Shergill raised a series of questions: “When r bulldozers running over China encroachment in Arunachal&Ladakh? “When r bulldozers running over fuel price hikes? “When r bulldozers running over Cylinder price hikes? “When r bulldozers running over rising Inflation? “When r bulldozers running ovr rising unemployment?”

Atishi Marlena
Similarly, BJP leaders and officials of the saffron party-ruled civic bodies in Delhi got Rohingyas and Bangladeshis “illegally” settled in the national capital over the last 15 years, it alleged and demanded that the houses of these leaders and officials should also be demolished using bulldozers. “The BJP is saying v i o l e n c e, r i o t s a n d hooliganism will stop by running bulldozers and removing encroachments. But actually, the BJP itself is engineering hooliganism,
violence and riots not just in Delhi, but across the countr y,” Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi Marlena said in a video message. She alleged that Shah and the BJP were behind all the recent incidents of communal violence in various parts of the country during Hanuman Jayanti and Ram Navami celebrations. “Bulldozers should be run on the BJP headquarters and on the residence of Amit Shah. After this, riots will not happen in this country,” the Kalkaji MLA said. Her remarks came after bulldozers razed several structures in Jahangirpuri during an anti-encroachment drive conducted by the BJP-r uled North Delhi Municipal Cor poration (NDMC) amid a heavy deployment of paramilitary and police personnel until the authorities received “a written order” from the Supreme Court to stop it.
100-member suicide squad formed: TDP detractors attack Naidu in the hope that this would help them reach higher positions. Meanwhile, Housing Minister Jogi Ramesh lashed out at Buddha Venkanna for making the remarks. The minister wondered how anyone can talk about forming suicide squads. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader said instead of cutting cake on Naidu’s birthday, Buddha Venkanna has said something mindless. The minister also said just as Chandrababu Naidu “backstabbed” his father-in-law (N.T. Rama Rao) to usurp power, his own party leaders would backstab him.

The TDP leader made controversial remarks while talking to reporters in Vijayawada after participating in birthday celebrations of Chandrababu Naidu. He said they would not keep quiet if

NEW DELHI, APR 20 (PTI): Razing the residence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the BJP headquarters using bulldozers will free the country from communal violence and riots forever, the AAP said on Wednesday, slamming the saffron party for the demolition of several structures in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri. The Arvind Kejriwalled party alleged that it was the BJP that had engineered clashes between two communities in Jahangirpuri during a Hanuman Jayanti procession last week as well as other such incidents of violence in various parts of the country during Ram Navami. With the sole motive of triggering communal violence and riots, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got Rohingyas and Bangladeshis “illegally” settled in different parts of the country over the last eight years, the AAP alleged.
NEW DELHI, APR 20 (PTI): In view of a spike in coronavirus cases in the national capital, the Delhi government on Wednesday decided to make the wearing of masks mandatory again in public places and impose a fine of Rs 500 in case of a violation. T h e d e c i s i o n wa s taken at a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), which also decided not to shut schools and come up with separate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in consultation with experts for them. L t G ove r n o r A n i l Baijal in a series of tweets shared details of the DDMA meeting and said,”it was decided to make the wearing of masks mandatory in public places.” The gover nment is expected to issue an official order regarding the mandatory use of masks soon. Fine on not wearing a mask was lifted by the Delhi government on April 2 after the decline in COVID cases in the city. T h e D D M A meeting emphasised strict

enforcement of the SOPs for schools by the school management concerned. “In the larger interest of students, in case of noncompliance or violation of SOPs, a penalty as deemed appropriate should be imposed for creating a deterrent effect,” Baijal tweeted. Officials said authorities have been asked to keep a close watch on social gatherings and ramp up testing in the national capital. They said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is closely monitoring the situation and instructions h av e b e e n i s s u e d t o officials to ensure the implementation of steps to check the spread of the virus and preparations for
the treatment of COVID patients. In the DDMA meeting, emphasis was also laid on early vaccination of eligible groups as it will help keep in check the impact of the pandemic, officials said. Several participants asserted that there was no need to panic since the number of hospitalisations was low despite a rise in COVID cases, they said. It was highlighted that the trends of hospitalisation needed to be closely monitored for the next fortnight as well as conducting genome sequencing of all positive samples, put through the RTPCR test. It was also decided to increase the number of tests being done with the focus

All said and done
fter a gap of several years, bringing a society divided along ideological and political lines has been reemphasised at the penultimate day of the 40-day revival held in Dimapur, organised by the Sinai Ministry. Those in attendance included state chief minister Neiphiu Rio and members of the opposition-less United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and factions of various Naga Political Groups(NPGs). The re-focus on reconciliation assumes importance against the expectations of an early settlement of the protracted Naga political issue. State chief minister Neiphiu Rio used the religious gathering to urge upon all to retrospect and introspect to renew and reconcile coming together at the scheduled assembly election in 2023 and thenceforth, press the government of India for early solution. Both UDA chief minister Neiphiu Rio (at the revival meet)and deputy chief minister Y.Patton (at the CNSA meet), reminded that legislators were one in resolving to pave way for an alternative arrangement, if and when political solution was arrived at. They however hastened to add, that if solution was still not secured by 2023 when the state goes to the polls, then all legislators will abide by their constitutional obligations. Patton also made it clear, that once elected in 2023, legislators won’t resign if solution comes post-election. Reconciliation in politics is something that is a politically correct sounding word. It has been pursued at many occasions and during different periods through football matches and meetings galore but went back to square one. The pursuit of unity and reconciliation among Nagas/ all sections of society etc for a common cause, as it may, is practically a challenging task in an environment where differences of opinion are not taken too kindly of and where being factionalised preserves the hegemony of vested interests. What has been observed is that groups of people meet together to promote unity but it has not broken the barrier due to inadequacies in putting this noble objective into workable action. It may be recalled that the effort had gained prominence when the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) was formed in 2008 with Rev. Dr.Wati Aier as convenor. Reconciliation is the process of two people or groups in a conflict agreeing to make amends or come to a truce. This part was achieved and to a large extent passed the first obstacle. Reconciliation involves seeking forgiveness and forgiving wrongs committed for restoration of peace. However, the “third party” the victims of the perpetrators have been excluded from the domain. Sincere or well meaning as state political leaders are, at least to the agenda of peace and solution; they have had their time and share of showcasing Naga political issue. Since 2003, the Naga political issue, at least, was spoken of as a very crucial issue by state politicians. They spoke as if they depended solely on it and reminding people how sincere they were for solution. All political parties came together to create the first ever opposition-less assembly in India when eight opposition Congress MLAs joined the DAN-III coalition in May 2015 which included NPF and BJP. Again for the second time it was the turn of NPF to join the PDA that included NDPP and BJP to form the UDA in mid-August 2021. These opposition-less formations were in the name of Naga political issue. Perhaps it is time rhetoric end and time to reform and rebuild.
DailyDevotion Can a Saint Falsely Accuse God?
All the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen… —2 Corinthians 1:20 Jesus’ parable of the talents recorded in Matthew 25:14-30 was a warning that it is possible for us to misjudge our capacities. This parable has nothing to do with natural gifts and abilities, but relates to the gift of the Holy Spirit as He was first given at Pentecost. We must never measure our spiritual capacity on the basis of our education or our intellect; our capacity in spiritual things is measured on the basis of the promises of God. If we get less than God wants us to have, we will falsely accuse Him as the servant falsely accused his master when he said, “You expect more of me than you gave me the power to do. You demand too much of me, and I cannot stand true to you here where you have placed me.” When it is a question of God’s Almighty Spirit, never say, “I can’t.” Never allow the limitation of your own natural ability to enter into the matter. If we have received the Holy Spirit, God expects the work of the Holy Spirit to be exhibited in us. The servant justified himself, while condemning his lord on every point, as if to say, “Your demand on me is way out of proportion to what you gave to me.” Have we been falsely accusing God by daring to worry after He has said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you”? (Matthew 6:33). Worrying means exactly what this servant implied— “I know your intent is to leave me unprotected and vulnerable.” A person who is lazy in the natural realm is always critical, saying, “I haven’t had a decent chance,” and someone who is lazy in the spiritual realm is critical of God. Lazy people always strike out at others in an independent way. Never forget that our capacity and capability in spiritual matters is measured by, and based on, the promises of God. Is God able to fulfil His promises? Our answer depends on whether or not we have received the Holy Spirit.

Post-mortem
Desecration of the Cabinet
T
he Nagaland Legislative Assembly(NLA) is the highest decision making authority under the Parliamentary system of government. All the laws of the State are enacted on the floor of the House by NLA. Whereas, in governance (in enforcement of the laws), the Nagaland State Cabinet is the highest decision making authority. The State Cabinet is therefore sacred and it has its own established decorum. The Chief Minister is the Chairman of the meetings of the Cabinet. In the event of his absence from any scheduled Cabinet meeting, he officially authorizes one of the senior Cabinet members to chair such meeting. The Chief Secretary of Nagaland State is the Cabinet Secretary by designation. The Chief Secretary therefore attends all the Cabinet meetings and records every decision of the Cabinet except when the Cabinet members meet exclusively in camera on a given matter and to which the Chief Secretary is not called. The State of Nagaland is entitled to have just 12 Cabinet Ministers including the Chief Minister against the total 60 MLAs under the downsizing rule. Yet, for the sheer purpose of ensuring political stability in the State, Nagaland used to have Advisors with Deputy Minister rank and manning the allotted Departments. These arrangements are done by flouting the spirit of the downsizing law which prevents such beyond the specified Cabinet berths. According to parliamentary practice, no Advisor, no MLA or no bureaucrat is entitled to enter the room where the Cabinet meeting is on. An Advisor, an MLA or a bureaucrat can participate in the meeting of the Cabinet only on call. In other words, when a Departmental subject being manned by any of the mentioned authorities is to be discussed by the Cabinet whereby the know-how of the Departmental representative becomes a requisite, only then the concerned authority is asked to apprise the Cabinet on the given matter within the stipulated time of discussion and leave. Well, about the existing
F
rom Christ’s Crucifixion on Good Friday followed by Holy Saturday to Easter a.k.a. Resurrection Sunday, various views/ understanding have been written by various qualified personalities and published in the preceding week. There are diverse passages in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark concerning Christ’s sufferings. This write-up focuses on one particular aspect relating to two thieves amidst whom Christ was crucified and some lessons given to understand from Gospel of Luke. Two other men, both of them criminals (thieves), were also led with Jesus to the place of execution at Calgary--the place of the skull. There Jesus was crucified between them. This was a painful and shameful death above any other. Thus he was not only treated as a transgressor, but numbered with them. The soldiers who were employed in the execution seized His garments as their fee, divided them among themselves by lots. Jesus was reviled and reproached. The people stood beholding the once in a lifetime scene and the Jewish leaders stood among the rabble, and derided Him, and they said, “He saved others, let him save himself if he is the Messiah whom God has chosen.” The soldiers also mocked Him; they came up to Him and offered Him cheap wine,
Cabinet, it is reportedly known that several of the Cabinet Ministers are found to be too lazy to read the circulated Cabinet Memos. When one does not read the Cabinet Memos, one cannot know what is happening to Nagaland now and will happen to people of Nagaland in future. Under such circumstance, those members have nothing to contribute to the transaction of the business during the Cabinet meetings except sitting like owl as mute spectators. It is also reportedly known that some of those irresponsible Cabinet members used to play with their Cell phones like Mobile phone addicted child while the State Cabinet is on serious discussion for the welfare of the State. Such drought of the sense of responsibility of the Cabinet members with no sense of accountability to the public cannot be expected to deliver anything good to Nagaland. When several of the Cabinet members do not care for the wellbeing of the people, what rational decisions can evolve out of those namesake Cabinet meetings. Such attitude of the Cabinet members leads to autocratic rule. What a tragedy! It is also found that due to lack of experience of the existing Cabinet Ministers on Rule of Executive Business and Parliamentary practices adding to their lackadaisical attitude, the decorum of the Cabinet is being defiled. It is reportedly known that non-Cabinet member of whoever is not entitled to attend the meeting used to participate in most of the Cabinet meetings. If so, such is not permissible. Such practice defiles the sacredness and degrades the very status of the State Cabinet. Such violation of the decorum is a mockery of the standing Cabinet ethics and its decorum. If what I heard is true, it is for the first time in the history of Nagaland Statehood, the State Cabinet is desecrated and degraded. Creating bad precedents is condemnable. Preserve the established systems for the posterity. Rule Nagaland if one is able to, and yet do not extirpate the established systems, please. Z. Lohe
WC, NNPG leaders’ commentary on recent past, principles of justice and hope
(From previous issue) The GoI will do well to recall that Nagaland tribes are the supreme lawmakers or law breakers in their own land. Their political sense on land is keenly reflected for centuries. Beyond Naga civility and inborn decency, no outsider dare trespass and cut a blade of grass in their territory. “Agreed Position” calmed the nerves of Nagas. Interlocutor Mr. R.N Ravi admitted that Nagas have strong political foundation and basis to pursue right to self determination. Agreeing that solution will be worked out basing on contemporary political realities, the delay is breeding anti-social elements in Nagaland. It is time for GoI to take the call. THE STATE GOVERNMENT: Today, the sixty elected members of Nagaland Legislative Assembly, representing sixty constituencies of Nagaland, must take a public stand. Enough consultations with Nagaland tribes, civil societies and Naga negotiating groups have taken place. There has been a number of committees and platforms to facilitate and assist the negotiators. Despite the best efforts, the stalemate persist. To the misfortune of Nagas, all politicians are blessed, or rather cursed, with three tongues. One for themselves, the other for their party and the third for their future. Former Governor R.N Ravi announced in the floor of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on 17th Jan. 2020 that negotiations have concluded. Has the facilitator become a political harlot, in the arms of anti-solution elements? The 2018 election slogan of “Election for Solution” cannot be repeated in any manner. We will not accept a recycled slogan. The wilful collective betrayal by political parties will naturally lead to serious repercussions. WC, NNPGs will take appropriate decision at an appropriate time. The treachery and deceit against the people of Nagaland have a price to pay. The current oppositionless government and its predecessors, at every
opportunity, claim they are prepared to pave the way for Naga solution. God in Heaven knows what transpires once they land in New Delhi. They are elected by electorates of Nagaland, and not by Manipur Nagas, Arunachal Nagas or Assam Nagas. They represent the people of Nagaland alone and no other state. We acknowledge the desire of the elected representatives to give a final push to usher in solution by forming an oppositionless government. On 1st April 2022, the state Chief Minister Mr. Neiphiu Rio and oppositionless UDA Chairman Mr. T.R Zeliang reaffirmed to WC, NNPGs of their commitment to Naga people that they were ready to pave the way for solution. Now, with a five year tenure slated to end in months, we believe it will be in the interest of Naga people to translate words into action. Our great hope in the days ahead is that the august house and members of NLA collectively will look at new direction, as primary stakeholders for the future, will put in papers en-masse, to enable an inclusive transitional arrangement for implementation of the Indo-Naga Agreement, for an enduring peaceful coexistence. This, we believe, will be a practical stance to prove who are, and who are not, for honorable and acceptable future of our children and grandchildren. We all must seek the Lord’s wisdom. QUESTION OF NAGA SELF DETERMINATION: The late Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru described the status of Nagaland on August 19, 1946, in connection with the proposed British Colony of Couplan Plan, as; “ The tribal areas are defined as being those long frontier of India which are neither part of India nor of Burma, nor of Indian states nor of any foreign power” History is clear. It was not heavily armed Naga soldiers who staged a walkout at Kohima ground on 30th March 1953, much to the astonishment of Indian Prime Min-
The Thief who ‘stole’ Paradise
and said, “Save yourself if you are the king of the Jews.” (Luke 23:36 & 37). The superscription over His head, setting forth His crime was “This is the King of the Jews.” (Verse 38). He was put to death (on the allegation) for pretending to be king of the Jews. This was written in the three learned l a n g u a ge s o f G r e e k , Latin and Hebrew that it might be known and read by all men. In these three languages, Jesus is “proclaimed King.”But God intended it to be a declaration of what He really was; He is the “King of the Jews,” and the Cross was the way to His Crown. Pontius Pilate had super inscribed the words as a mockery of Jesus firstly in Latin and the abbreviation I.N.R.I. which is now seen on the Cross stands for “Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum” meaning Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. Pilate unknowingly did Christianity a great favour for the Cross is the emblem of all Christians. Christ’s prayer for his enemies “Forgive them, Father! They don’t know what they are doing.” (verse 34)---Seven remarkable words (read sentences) Christ spoke as he was nailed to the cross, and before He died, and this was the first, as soon as He was fastened to the cross, or while they were nailing Him. It is to be noted that the nails were solid and several inches
long and were driven into that part of foot near the ankle which exacted the greatest physical pain. This moment He prayed His prayer. The sins they were now guilty of might justly have been made unpardonable. No, these were particularly “prayed for.” Now He made intercession for transgressors. This was the meaning and intent of His death. He prayed not only for his enemies but for all “that shall repent, and believe the gospel.” The great thing which Christ died to purchase and procures for us is the forgiveness of sin. His plea was because if they had known, they would not have crucified Him. There is a kind of ignorance that does in part excuse sin; ignorance through lack of means of knowledge or of a capacity to receive instruction. The crucifiers of Christ were kept in ignorance by their leaders, and had prejudice against Him instilled into them, so what they did against Christ and His doctrine they thought they did God service. Such are to be pitied and prayed for. The great thing we must beg of God, both for ourselves and others, is the forgiveness of sin. To “love your enemies” is Christ’s example to His own rule. Conversion of The Thief As Christ was crucified between two thieves, in them were represented
the different effects which the Cross of Christ would have upon the children of men. Now the Cross of Christ is to some a “savior of life unto life,” to others of “death unto death.” Here was one of the thieves that was “hardened to the last.” He hurled insult at Christ, “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us.” (Verse 39). Though he was also in pain and agony, yet this did not humble his proud nature nor dared to speak good language to his fellow sufferer. He challenged Christ to save both Himself and them. There are some that have the impudence to rail at Christ, and yet confident to expect to be saved by Him. The other thief on the other hand was “softened at the last.” This implies that it was the fear of God which restrained him from following the multitude to this end. He reproved his co-thief, “Don’t you fear God? You received the same sentence He did. Ours, however, is only right, because we are getting what we deserve for what we did; for He has done no wrong.” (verses 40, 41). True penitents acknowledge the justice of God in all the punishments of their sin. We received the rewards of our deeds. This penitent thief believed Christ to have suffered wrongfully. He was convinced by his conduct in sufferings that Christ had done nothing amiss. The
ister Nehru and his Burmese counterpart U-Nu, who had to address empty seats. The evaporated audience were plain everyday village folks who came to listen and wanted to be listened to. They were disallowed from airing their grievances to the leaders. The spontaneous walkout was a Naga way of conveying, “It is our land, not India’s or Burma’s, leave us”. In the months ahead a miffed Nehru flooded Nagaland with Indian Army. By early 1954, the simple village boys and farmers had galvanised themselves into fearless warriors, unbeatable Naga Army, ambushing mighty Indian forces at will. Today, the very sensitive Nagas await Prime Minister Modi’s sincere assurance to solve the Naga issue. If co-existence, respecting each other’s history and right, as declared, in “Agreed Position” is devalued, WC, NNPGs will have no option but to call upon the Naga tribes for public reiteration and reaffirmation of MAY 16, 1951 PLEBICITE for NAGA INDEPENDENCE. This is the original position of the Nagas. Gandhian principle of Non-violence or AHIMSA did not say India must remain free and peaceful while small nations like Nagaland be crushed and suppressed for another thousand years. Honorable and acceptable Naga solution is paramount. The wisdom of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi will matter most in the coming days. Hurting the Naga sentiment is insulting the core Naga pride and this should not happen again in our lifetime. (To be concluded) N. Kitovi Zhimomi, Convener, WC. Zhopra Vero, Co-Convener, WC. Y. chief priests would have cr ucified Jesus as one of the malefactors, but this thief had more sense than they. For he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy Kingdom;” or, in simpler terms, “Remember me, Jesus, when you come as King!” (Verse 42). This was the prayer of a “dying sinner” to a “dying saviour.” It was the honour of Christ to be thus prayed to. It was the happiness of the thief ‘thus to pray.” Perhaps he never prayed before, and yet was now heard, and saved at the last gasp. Observe his “faith” in this prayer. In his confession of sin (verse 41) he discovered “repentance towards God.” In this petition, he discovered “faith towards our Lord Jesus Christ.” He owns Him to be “Lord”, and to have a “Kingdom,” and that those should be happy whom He favoured; and to “believe” and “confess” all this was a “great thing” at this time of day. He believed “another life” after this, and desired to be happy in “that” life, not as the other thief, to be “saved from the cross,” but to be well provided when the cross had done its worst. Observe his humility in this prayer. All he begs, is “Lord, remember me,” referring himself to Christ in what way to remember him. There was an air of importunity and fervency in this prayer. He does, as it were, breathed out his
soul in it. To be remembered by Christ, now that He is in His Kingdom, is what we should earnestly desire and pray for, and it will be enough to secure our welfare living and dying. Eternal Life Christ remembered this thief, hence the extraordinary grants of His favour by saying, “I promise you, that today you will be in Paradise with me.” (Verse 43). Though Christ Himself was in the greatest struggle and agony, yet He had a word of comfort to speak to a poor penitent. Even great sinners, if they be true penitents, shall, through Christ, obtain not only the pardon of their sins, but a place in the Paradise of God---eternal life. This thief was snatched as a brand out of the burning, and made a monument of divine mercy and grace. This means not to put off repentance, for though it is certain that true repentance is never too late, it is as certain that late repentance is seldom true. In normal circumstances, one might assume that some souls of the saints would accompany Jesus on his return to Paradise but He was instead accompanied by a penitent thief. Of one thing is certain. And that is, this thief had probably never prayed in his life but at the last moment he prayed with all his heart and soul in his belief and thus stole Paradise. Jack T. Chakhesang

support, investments needed to India to introduce AYUSH Mark: PM Modi Govt support traditional med: WHO chief
GANDHINAGAR, APR 20 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that to promote the traditional medicine industry, India will soon launch `AYUSH mark’ which will give authenticity to quality AYUSH products made in the country. Speaking of “Heal in India”, he also announced that a special visa category will be created soon for those who want to travel to the country to avail of AYUSH therapies. Modi was speaking after the inauguration of the three-day Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit at Mahatma Mandir here in the presence of Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and Director General of the World Health Organization Dr Tredos Ghebreyesus. `AYUSH’ denotes Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy. India has a central ministry dedicated to these alternative medicine systems. “India will soon in-
the prime minister said. “Before 2014, the AYUSH sector was less than USD 3 billion. Today it has also crossed USD 18 billion,” he said. There are also possibilities of investment and innovation in supply chain management, AYUSHbased diagnostic tools and tele-medicine, Modi said. The Union Ministry of AYUSH has also taken steps to encourage start-up culture in the field of traditional medicine, and an incubation center developed by the All India Institute of Ayurveda was inaugurated recently, he noted. “In India, this is an era of unicorns. In 2022, so far 14 start-ups from India have joined the unicorn club. I am sure unicorns will emerge from our AYUSH start-ups very soon,” Modi said. India of the 21st century wants to move ahead by sharing its experience, knowledge and information with the world, the prime minister said. “The main reason for
the prosperity of Ayurveda has been its open source model. Ayurveda has developed through open source tradition. Even today, we should learn from our ancestors to work with intellectual openness,” Modi said. The government is also working on the modernization and expansion of AYUSH e-market portal to connect farmers with companies which make AYUSH products, he said, noting that medicinal plants can be a good source for increasing farmers’ income. “It has a large scope for employment generation. But we have seen that the markets for such plants and products are limited and specialized. It is very important that farmers involved in the production of medicinal plants get the facility to easily connect with the market,” he said. The new category ‘AYUSH Aahar’ introduced by the FSSAI last week in its regulations will help the producers of herbal nutritional supplements, Modi said.
taries were present. “Going forward, longterm strategic investment along with the government commitment is needed to support the innovation ecosystem for the health in general and the traditional medicine in particular,” said Dr Ghebreyesus. He also stressed that innovators, industry and the government should come forward to develop traditional medicine “in a sustainable, environmentally sensitive and equitable manner”. “When bringing traditional medicines to market, we must make sure that the communities which had
passed on this knowledge and nurtured these traditional products also benefit from their development, including by sharing the fruits of intellectual property,” said Dr Ghebreyesus. According to him, the AYUSH sector, which comprises six Indian systems of medicine - Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy is “growing significantly by 17 per cent per year since 2014”. The WHO director general added that the AYUSH industry is projected to reach USD 23 billion by the end of this year. “This fast-moving industry which spans so many areas, such as dietary, well-being and pharmaceutical, just to name a few, is attracting investment from entrepreneurs and large manufacturers. Through the AYUSH sector, India will go to the whole world and the whole world will come to India,” he said.
‘Report within 72 hours’: Cong No more man-days lost in WB due to strikes: Mamata on Prashant Kishor’s proposal
Vishwas booked over ‘inflammatory remarks’ on Kejriwal
NEW DELHI, APR 20 (AGENCIES): Election strategist Prashant Kishor had another round of what was effectively a job interview at the Delhi home of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi today. Apart from the team that was to evaluate his proposal, there were two more leaders today -- Ashok Gehlot and Bhupesh Baghel, Chief Ministers of the two last Congress-ruled states. A report on the matter is expected within 72 hours, the Congress said. Today’s meeting -- the fourth with Mr Kishor in recent days -- was also attended by senior leaders Jairam Ramesh, Ambika

After the meeting, party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said the party is “evaluating” Prashant Kishore’s proposals. “Various others’ inputs are also being deliberated upon and a final report to be submitted within the next 72 hours to the Congress President,” he added. While Mr Kishor -- or PK -- is known to be an election winner, his goals for the Congress include nothing less than the rejuvenation of the 137-year-old party that is practically facing a wipeout. The Congress, thus, wants to take a collective decision, even though the
Shivamogga airport to be named after BS Yediyurappa: K’taka CM
S H I VA M O G G A (K’TAKA), APR 20 (AGENCIES): The airport that is coming up at Sogane near will be named after former chief minister B S Yediyurappa, Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai said on Wednesday. The airport, with international standard facilities, will be inaugurated in December this year, he said. “I’m happy to note that our cabinet has decided to name this as B S Yediyurappa airport. We will send it (proposal) to the Civil Aviation Ministry, Government of India. Once approved, we will issue an order naming the airport before it is commissioned,” Mr Bommai said. He was speaking after inspecting the ongoing air-
port work at Sogane on the outskirts of the city. “The airport is currently under UDAN, a clearance from the Airport Authority of India is required, we will obtain it...we will have ATC and night-landing facilities here. The inauguration will happen in December, before that we will complete all the pending work and open it for the public,” he added. The Shivamogga airport will have the second longest runway in Karnataka after Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Shivamogga is the political base of Yediyurappa, he is the MLA from Shikaripura assembly segment in the district, while his elder son B Y Raghavendra is MP from Shivamogga parliamentary constituency.

The possibilities of investment and innovation in the field of AYUSH are limitless with the country having witnessed unprecedented growth in the production of AYUSH medicines, supplements and cosmetics,
final call will be taken by Sonia Gandhi. Initially, most Congress leaders had played down the proposals of Mr Kishor, saying it was only a one-time proposal for Gujarat. Only later, Mr Kishor’s organisation IPAC said it involves the rejuvenation of the Congress and a strategy for the 2024 general elections. There is also the question of Mr Kishor’s entry to the party -- talks for which fell through last year. The wariness of the Congress stems from the big bang approach of Mr Kishor, which Gandhis feel might antagonize some leaders especially belonging to the Old Guard.
KOLKATA, APR 20 (PTI): The state, which was at one time known as the strike capital of the country, has brought down man-days lost to industrial action to zero from 75 lakh annually, said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday, as she wooed investors from across the globe at a big-ticket business summit here. Banerjee, addressing a large gathering of industry tycoons at the Bengal Global Business Summit, however, also took a dig at the Union government, urging the state’s Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to talk to central authorities to ensure that industrialists are “not disturbed by some agencies”. Her off-the-cuff comment is being seen as a pos-
sible response to the Governor’s inaugural speech where he had advised the chief minister to distance the state from “partisan stance” to fuel prosperity in Bengal. Banerjee also revealed the state planned to set up a Rs 72,000-crore industrial zone in the densely forested and backward ‘Junglemahal’ area along the eastern freight corridor being built by the Centre, linking north India with West Bengal’s ports. “We have allocated 2,483 acre of industrial land at Purulia for the ‘Junglemahal Shundori Kormonagari’ project along the eastern freight corridor from Amritsar to Dankuni,” she said. CHANDIGARH, APR 20 (PTI): A Punjab Police team visited the Ghaziabad home of former AAP leader Kumar Vishwas, days after he was booked over his “inflammatory statements” against party chief Arvind Kejriwal ahead of the state Assembly polls. Vishwas shared information about the police team reaching his home in a tweet on Wednesday. The case against Vishwas was registered in Rupnagar town’s Sadar police station on April 12. The former AAP leader ahead of the elections had accused Kejriwal of supporting separatists. “We have registered a case under relevant provisions of the law against Kumar Vishwas,” Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Garg said over the phone. In a notice, Vishwas has also been asked to produce evidence to support his allegations.

Cement prices expected to increase by 6-13 percent
NEW DELHI, APR 20 (AGENCIES): Following the rise in prices of imported coal, pet coke and crude oil against the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, domestic cement prices are expected to increase by 6-13 per cent across the country. According to industry sources, coal and petcoke prices have increased sharply by 30-50 per cent in the last 6 months due to the Ukraine crisis. According to a Crisil report, after rising to Rs 390 per bag over the past 12 months at an all-India level, domestic cement prices are set to climb another Rs 25-50 across regions in April as manufacturers start to pass on rising costs, Business Standard reported. Coal and pet coke are the most important elements of clinker, which is a critical raw material used in the cement manufacturing industry. “Apart from the ever-increasing price of
coal and pet coke, the cost of petroleum products like petrol and diesel prices is also increasing in the national and international markets, which very badly impacts the cost of production of raw materials of cement, Packaging materials, production, transportation and distribution cost of cement,” said Vishal Kanodia, MD, Kanodia Cement. After the war broke out in Ukraine, Brent crude prices saw an increase of 21 per cent to an average of $115 a barrel in the month of March. For the entire financial year, prices were up 79 per cent, too. Similarly, international petcoke prices shot up 43 per cent on-quarter in March. Last fiscal, US petcoke prices were up 96 per cent. Domestic petcoke prices (Gujarat ex-refinery) have followed suit, rising 26 per cent on-month in March and 21 per cent on-month in April. Industry sources indi-
cate that due to higher sea freight and supply-side constraints, the cost of imported petroleum coke has more than doubled to around $130 per tonne on a yearly basis. “In FY23, cement volume growth will be stable at 5-7 per cent, driven by affordable housing demand from tier-2 and tier-3 cities, along with infrastructure. However, high construction costs will limit the demand uptick,” said Hetal Gandhi, director, CRISIL Research. Though demand had picked up by 20 per cent during the first half of FY22, it came down to 7 per cent, owing to unseasonal rains, sand issues and labour shortage. The South India Cement Manufacturers Association (SICMA) has already come out in public stating that it is being hit by the main three input costs – fuel, power and transport. It also raised concerns about coal availability due to the ongoing war.

NEW DELHI, APR 20 (PTI): Gold in the national capital on Wednesday plunged by Rs 915 to Rs 52,367 per 10 grams amid a decline in international precious metal prices and rupee appreciation, according to HDFC Securities. The precious metal had finished at Rs 53,282 per 10 grams in the previous trade. Silver also tumbled Rs 2,221 to Rs 67,969 per kg from Rs 70,190 per kg in the previous trade. Meanwhile, the rupee appreciated 29 paise to settle at 76.21 (provisional) against the US dollar on Wednesday, tracking positive domestic equities and some moderation in crude oil prices. In the international market, gold was trading lower at USD 1,942.5 per ounce and silver was marginally lower at USD 24.94 per ounce. “Gold prices traded lower with spot gold prices at COMEX trading 0.38 per cent down at USD 1,942 per ounce on Wednesday.
obligations prescribed by it as part of the recent spectrum recommendations are easy, fair and rational, and fully in line with global 5G norms. Responding to the telecom industry’s views that minimum rollout obligations are a ‘retrograde step’ and should be done away with, a senior TRAI official told PTI that the regulator’s recommendations are aimed at ensuring efficient use of radiowaves for the maximum benefit of telecom consumers. The rollout obligations are reasonable and the logic is well-explained in TRAI’s recommendation document, the official said, adding that the minimum rollout obligations have been prescribed in other 5G markets as well. Moreover, the network rollout terms spelt out by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) are easy and and simple, the official added. Further, the official said that TRAI is duty-
bound to see that the benefits of 5G are available to not only the service providers but also to customers and citizens, and accordingly, the recommendations aim to ensure efficient utilisation of spectrum. Not prescribing minimum rollout conditions may lead to under utilisation of spectrum resources, given that the pricing of radiowaves have been recommended with near 40 per cent cut across bands, the official noted. Explaining the math behind the rollout conditions, the official also pointed out that the regulator looked at 4G rollout average of five years and prescribed
one-fourth of those levels that too spread over different circles for the next 3-5 years. If an operator leverages an existing tower or street furniture and adds small cells, it will be treated as a site under the rollout obligations, the official added. When asked about mobile operators’ demand for a review of spectrum pricing and other conditions, the official said that there is no provision under TRAI Act for re-look, and that too within one week of release of recommendations, which are completely “rational” and backed by thorough analysis. Setting the stage for the rollout of 5G services, the regulator, earlier this
base price across multiple bands for radiowaves to be allocated over 30 years. Overall, TRAI recommended about a 39 per cent reduction in the reserve or floor price for the sale of spectrum for mobile services, including the latest 5G offering, as it looked to match revenue expectations with the industry’s paying capacity. The Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI), however, expressed anguish over TRAI’s 5G recommendations, terming the spectrum pricing suggested by the regulator as “too high”, while also objecting to roll out conditions and other nuances. COAI had also said that by introducing mandatory rollout obligations for 5G networks without even factoring the huge cost of such a rollout, “TRAI has delinked itself from reality and is running counter to the government’s efforts of enhancing ease of doing business”.

SL protests: Curfew to continue in Rambukkana after violence
C O LO M B O, A P R 2 0 (PTI): The police in Sri Lanka on Wednesday said that curfew will continue in the southwestern region of Rambukkana where one person was killed and 13 others were injured in violence after the police opened fire at unarmed anti-government protestors demonstrating against the latest fuel price hike. At least three of the 13 hospitalised protesters at Rambukkana, some 90 kilometers northeast of Colombo, were critical at the Kegalle hospital, according to officials. Fifteen police personnel have also been injured. Police chief Chandana Wickremaratne told reporters that the police curfew imposed in the area would continue. “Protesters got violent yesterday and blocked the railway track. They were demanding fuel at the old price having waited in the fuel queue for a long time,” he said. When the police arranged two fuel bowsers, the protesters took out the battery of one of the vehicles, blocking the railway track, Wickremaratne said. “The police used minimum force by firing tear gas,” the police chief said. The death of a protester was the first during the ongoing protests over the worst-ever economic crisis

in the country’s history. Top bureaucrat of the public security ministry Jagath Alwis said the protesters tried to set on fire a fuel tanker having 33,000 liters of fuel. The police were forced to open fire to prevent the bowser being set in flames by the protesters. Alwis said a threemember probe committee has been appointed to probe if the police had used excessive power in opening the fire at protesters. The embassies of the US, the EU and the UN resident coordinator have issued statements condemning the police shooting. The latest fuel price hike on Monday night triggered street protests in many areas on Tuesday. Oil entities in the island
nation have been hiking the price regularly due to the shortage of fuel. Meanwhile, the trade unions have collectively said that they would launch a black protest to force the resignation of the government for bungling on the ongoing economic crisis. “We would hold a picketing campaign wearing black,” the teachers’ trade union boss Joseph Stalin said. On Tuesday, the federation of university teachers staged a walk in solidarity with the main anti-government protest being held at Galle Face at the entry to the presidential secretariat. The Galle Face protest enters its 12th day on Wednesday. Sri Lanka is
grappling with unprecedented economic turmoil since independence from Britain in 1948. The crisis is caused in part by a lack of foreign currency, which has meant that the country cannot afford to pay for imports of staple foods and fuel, leading to acute shortages and very high prices. The island nation is witnessing large-scale protests against the government’s handling of the debtridden economy - the worstever economic crisis in the country’s history. Protests demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his Sri Lanka Podujana (Peramuna)-led government have intensified as shortages continued and prices soared.
C O LO M B O, A P R 2 0 (PTI): Sri Lanka’s Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa on Wednesday claimed that Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene had assured that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was ready to resign if all political parties request him, media reports said on Wednesday. There have been growing calls for President Rajapaksa’s resignation over the past few weeks over his government’s mishandling of Sri Lanka’s worsening economic crisis. Speaker Abeywardene, however, denied informing party leaders that the President was ready to step down, the Daily Mirror newspaper reported. “There is a report circulating on social media that I have informed party leaders of the President’s willingness to resign if they (party leaders) make a request. I only said the President is ready to handover the government to anyone who commands majority,” the Speaker clarified in Parliament. Leader of Opposition Premadasa reiterated that Speaker Abeywardena had said this at a party leaders’ meeting. “You said to the party leaders that all party leaders
of his House go and ask him to step down, he is ready for it. We’re ready to do that. You give us the opportunity. All of us in the Opposition are ready to unanimously make that statement. “I am not a fool to distort what you said. Don’t deny your statement. You are a Tom Pachaya (blatant lier),” Premadasa said. The Speaker said it was Premadasa who was coming up with “Tom pacha (blatant lie)”. Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella also confirmed that the Speaker did not say. A unanimous call from party leaders would have to include the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), led by President Rajapaksa’s elder brother Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. Political analysts say it is unlikely that the SLPP will back such a call. Sri Lanka, which is on the brink of bankruptcy, is grappling with an unprecedented economic turmoil, the worst since its independence from Britain in 1948. The crisis is caused in part by a lack of foreign currency, which has meant that the country cannot afford to pay for imports of staple foods and fuel, leading to acute shortages and very high prices.
C O LO M B O, A P R 2 0 (PTI): Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who is under pressure to resign, was dealt a further blow on Wednesday when three more parliamentarians withdrew their support to the government. Earlier this month, 39 lawmakers out of 156 MPs pulled their support to Rajapaksa in the 225-member Parliament. The breakaway group, which sits independently, has declared not to align with any other coalition, including the Opposition. The independent group demands the formation of an all-party interim government with the resignation of the Rajapaksa family from power. Sri Lanka Muslim Council (SLMC) MP Faizal Cassim informed Parliament that he along with MPs Ishak Rahuman and M S Thowfeek will withdraw their support to the government. The three MPs were part of the opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) coalition, including from the SLMC. They had been Rajapaksa’s allies since 2020 and voted for the controversial 20A which conferred absolute power on the President. A heated exchange
er upted on Wednesday morning when Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana denied a claim by main Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa that the Speaker told the party leaders that Rajapaksa was ready to resign if all party leaders requested him to do so. Abeywardana, a member of the ruling coalition, said it was a misinterpretation by Premadasa. However, the main Opposition leader stood by his statement calling Abeywardana a liar. An extended public protest, which began near Rajapaksa’s secretariat on April 9 demanding Rajapaksa’s resignation, entered on its 12th day. Sri Lanka is grappling with unprecedented economic turmoil since its independence from Britain in 1948. The crisis is caused in part by a lack of foreign currency, which has meant that the country cannot afford to pay for imports of staple foods and fuel, leading to acute shortages and very high prices. “I will be seeing Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi in Delhi, meeting Indian business people investing in the UK and visiting British investments in India,” he said. Prime Minister Modi had addressed the G7 summit at Carbis Bay virtually as his travel plans were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The two leaders met in person later in the year, when Modi travelled to Glasgow for the COP26 climate summit in November. This followed John-
son’s planned visits to India in 2021 being cancelled twice due to the pandemic situation in either country. This week, it is expected that the Russia-Ukraine conflict will feature prominently during the bilateral talks between the leaders when Johnson is in New Delhi on Friday. Downing Street has stressed that the UK would not look to “lecture” India over its neutral stance in the United Nations or its decision to hike Russian oil imports. “This visit is not framed on the RussiaUkraine crisis. Obviously, that is really important but this is a visit we have planned for a very long time. India is an incredibly important partner,” Johnson’s official spokesperson, who is accompanying him to India, told reporters at Downing Street.
WikiLeaks Editor in Chief Kristinn Hrafnsson shows up during a protest in support of Julian Assange on Apr 20.
LONDON, APR 20 (AP): A British judge on Wednesday formally approved the extradition of Julian Assange to the United States to face spying charges. The case will now go to Britain’s interior minister for a decision, and the WikiLeaks founder still has legal avenues of appeal. The order comes after the UK Supreme Court last month refused Assange permission to appeal against a lower court’s ruling that he
could be extradited. A judge at Westminster Magistrates’ Court issued the order in a brief hearing. Home Secretary Priti Patel will decide whether to grant the extradition. The move doesn’t exhaust the legal options for Assange, who has sought for years to avoid a trial in the US on charges related to WikiLeaks’ publication of a huge trove of classified documents more than a decade ago.

Local civilians walk past a tank destroyed during heavy fighting in an area controlled by Russian-backed separatist forces in Mariupol, Ukraine, Tuesday, April 19, 2022.
KYIV, APR 20 (AP): Russian forces pressured a stubborn pocket of resistance in Mariupol amid renewed hopes Wednesday for an evacuation of thousands of civilians from the shattered port city that is a key battleground in Moscow’s new onslaught to take control of Ukraine’s eastern industrial heartland. In addition to pounding Mariupol, Russian forces have intensified their attacks along a boomerangshaped front hundreds of miles long in what is known as the Donbas, home to coal mines, metal plants and factories vital to Ukraine’s economy.
If successful, the offensive would give President Vladimir Putin a badly needed victory following the failed attempt by Moscow’s forces to storm the capital, Kyiv, and stronger-thanexpected resistance in the nearly two-month war. Ukrainian troops said Tuesday the Russian military dropped heavy bombs to flatten what was left of a sprawling steel plant — believed to be the last holdout of troops defending Mariupol — and hit a makeshift hospital where hundreds were staying. The reports could not be independently confirmed. Elsewhere, Russian
Defense Ministr y said Wednesday its forces kept up intense attacks on Ukrainian targets, hitting 1,053 with artillery and 73 with airstrikes. Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov also said there had been missile strikes on concentrations of Ukrainian troops and vehicles in the Kherson Region in southern Ukraine. Those claims could not be independently verified. The General Staff of Ukraine’s military said in a statement that taking control of the Azovstal steel mill and thus fully capturing Mariupol remains a top Russian priority. But it added that Moscow’s forces were
continuing to mount offensives across the east as its forces probe for weak points in the Ukrainian defensive lines. A siege on Mariupol since the early days of the war has flattened much of the city on the Sea of Azov and inflicted some of the most dramatic suffering of the conflict, which has also pushed more than 5 million people to flee the country. Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said that there was a “preliminary” agreement to open a humanitarian corridor for women, children and the elderly to leave Mariupol and head west to the Ukraine-controlled city of Zaporizhzhia on Wednesday afternoon. Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko urged locals to leave the city, though previous such agreements have fallen apart, with Russians preventing buses meant to pick up evacuees from entering the city or shelling escape routes. “Do not be frightened and evacuate to Zaporizhzhia, where you can receive all the help you need — food, medicine, essentials — and the main thing is that you will be in safety,” he wrote in a statement issued by the city council.

HONG KONG, APR 20 (AP): YouTube on Wednesday took down the campaign channel of Hong Kong’s sole candidate to become its next leader, John Lee, citing compliance with US sanctions imposed against the former No. 2 official. Lee had set up a Facebook page and a YouTube channel to promote his campaign, even though he is running uncontested in the election for chief executive on May 8, in which an Election Committee of about 1,500 people will select the city’s leader. The committee is made up largely of pro-Beijing members, including legislators and representatives of different professions and industries in the city. Lee, who resigned as chief secretary earlier this month to run in the election, had been live-streaming
his meetings with media and political figures in the city on both Facebook and YouTube prior to the termination of his YouTube channel. He is among a group of top Hong Kong and Beijing officials — including current leader Carrie Lam — who were sanctioned by the US in 2020 for undermining the city’s autonomy and restricting its freedoms following Beijing’s imposition of a tough national security law on the semi-autonomous city. Google, YouTube’s parent company, said in a statement that it “complies with applicable US sanctions laws and enforces related policies under its Terms of Service”. “After review and consistent with these policies, we terminated the Johnlee2022 YouTube channel,” it said. A spokesperson for Facebook, now called Meta, said Lee will be allowed to “maintain a demonetised presence on Facebook and Instagram, and we have taken steps to prevent the use of payments services.” His Facebook page remained accessible Wednesday evening.

your mental and physical well-being in other ways. Omega-3s The traditional Mediterranean diet, which includes omega 3-rich-fish, is linked to a lower risk of dementia. But can omega-3 supplements help? So far, large studies (including one sponsored by the National Institutes of Health) haven’t proved that. One possible exception: People with the APOE4 gene mutation, which is tied to Alzheimer’s, might benefit if they start taking the supplements early enough, a 2017 review shows. Vitamin E This antioxidant combats free radicals, including those that may damage brain cells. But large studies aimed at
finding out whether vitamin E supplements can protect against dementia haven’t yielded great results, though at least one study found that they might slow the worsening of Alzheimer’s in people who already have it. For now, experts say most healthy people should stick with food sources like nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils. Ginkgo Biloba Although it’s a staple in traditional Chinese medicine, modern research has found that ginkgo supplements probably w o n’ t p r o t e c t y o u r memory. Although some studies have suggested there might be benefits, the most well-designed trials -- notably the Ginkgo Evaluation Memory study that included 3,000 older adults -- showed that ginkgo doesn’t prevent or slow dementia. Ginseng Often used along with ginkgo, ginseng is another popular supplement that hails from Asia. As with ginkgo, some studies have suggested that ginseng might be a potent brain booster. But the evidence d i d n’ t h o l d u p w h e n scientists homed in on the
best-quality research: A review of several trials concluded there’s “no convincing evidence” that ginseng will protect your mental skills. Curcumin Found in turmeric (an ingredient in curry powder), curcumin has been hailed for its antioxidant powers. Does it help explain why Alzheimer’s rates are lower in India? A UCLA study found that people who took curcumin fared better on memory tests and had less buildup of abnormal proteins in their brains. But this study only included 40 people, and other research hasn’t found this result, so more studies are needed. CDP-choline I n E u r o p e, C D P choline isn’t sold as a dietary supplement. Instead, it’s a prescription drug. According to researchers who reviewed 14 studies, there’s decent evidence that it can benefit memory in elderly people who already have memory problems. But whether it can prevent them in healthy people isn’t clear. Ask your doctor if you’re thinking of trying it. What About Combos? Many memory supplements aren’t sold
as single ing redients. Though some ingredients might work well together, combined supplements are harder to study and could be risky. Supplements may cause side effects, and the risk rises with the number you take. Mixing them with prescription drugs can be risky, too. Review all the drugs and supplements you’re taking (or considering) with your doctor or pharmacist, so they can tell you what’s safe. Food First While certain supplements might help in some cases, most healthy people don’t need pills to stay sharp. Eating a diet that’s rich in vegetables, ber ries, whole g rains, and fish (key parts of the so-called MIND diet) is a way to support brain health as you age. Staying physically active, getting enough sleep, taking care of any medical conditions you have, keeping up your social connections, and challenging your mind by being a life-long learner can make a big difference, too. Take a Pill, Protect Your Memory? “Improves memory.” “Sharpens focus.” These are just some of the claims you may see on the supplements that 25% of adults over age 50 are taking to try to keep their brains healthy. Three second-half strikes which included a brace from substitute Tarun Slathia meant Punjab picked up their first win of the tournament. Rajasthan made a bright start. Amit Godara’s attempt from outside the box in the second minute was saved by a diving Harpreet Singh. The corner led to another attempt from outside the box, this time from youngster Sahil Khan, but the goalkeeper once again thwarted the attempt. Those two quick fire attempts woke up the Punjab players who then went on to boss the remainder of the first-half. Their first chance fell to Manvir Singh who drifted in from the left. A chipped pass was expertly controlled by the winger but brave goalkeeping from Rajasthan’s Gajraj Singh ensured it remained goalless. Both the Punjab wingers kept cutting in from the flanks, which made it

Amarpreet Singh cut in from the right and unleashed a powerful left-footer from just outside the box. Gajraj Singh was left rooted to the spot and he was a relieved man as the ball went narrowly wide of the goal. With Rajasthan dropping deeper and deeper, it was becoming difficult for Punjab to play the killer through ball. So the players in yellow resorted to tak-

ing shots from deep. Jaginder Singh’s rasping drive was parried to safety by a full stretch Gajraj. The ball dropped just in front of him which made it awkward for the goalie to save. Rohit Sheikh then had the ball in the back of the net after some neat buildup play but the referee called play back for offside. The period of sustained pressure finally paid off for Punjab in the 37th minute. A cross from the right was
headed down by Manvir Singh and a snap shot with his left foot by Amarpreet Singh finally beat Gajraj as Punjab took a deserved lead into the half-time break. The second half was completely one-way traffic as Punjab players had nu-
merous chances to increase their lead. The insurance goal came via a spot-kick in the 63rd minute. Manvir Singh cut in from the left and was tripped inside the box by Trilok Lohar. Skipper Parmjit Singh stepped up and coolly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to give Punjab a 2-0 lead. The goal seemed to kill the little resistance the Rajasthan players were putting in. Substitute Slathia then came on and made an immediate impact. He latched onto a lofted ball, held the defender at bay and swept the ball past Gajraj using his left foot to triple the advantage. The Punjab players kept shooting at will and Gajraj had to time and again come to Rajasthan’s rescue. The fourth and final goal was once again scored by the substitute strike Slathia. Miscommunication inside the box within the Rajasthan camp gave him the chance to dispatch the gift and he did so emphatically.

ROME, APR 20 (AP): Five-time champion Novak Djokovic can come to Rome and play at the Italian Open next month even if he is still not vaccinated against the coronavirus, the president of the Italian Tennis Federation said on Wednesday. “The rules regarding players’ participation are established by the government and the ATP,” federation president Angelo Binaghi said at the presentation for the May 8-15 tournament. Binaghi indicated that he had discussed the issue with Valentina Vezzali, the Italian government’s cabinet undersecretary in charge of sports, who was seated next to him. Current entry rules for Italy require either proof of vaccination against COVID-19, proof of recovery from infection or a negative test. Djokovic says he has tested positive at least twice for COVID-19, with his last case coming in December. Djokovic couldn’t defend his Australian Open title in January after he was deported from the country for not being vaccinated. He also had to skip tournaments in Indian Wells, California, and Miami because he couldn’t travel to the United States for the same reason. Djokovic recently returned to action at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he lost his opening match to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The 20time Grand Slam champion is playing at home in the Serbia Open this week.

Wimbledon ban on Russian players would be ‘unacceptable’: Kremlin
The Kremlin said Wednesday that banning Russian tennis players from Wimbledon over Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine would be “unacceptable.” “Once again they simply turn athletes into hostages to political prejudice, political intrigues,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. “This is unacceptable.” “Taking into account that Russia is a very strong tennis country, our athletes are at the top of world rankings, the competition itself will suffer from their removal,” he added.
The Times reported that organisers are to ban Russian and Belarus players due to Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine. T h e m ove c o m e s amid Russia’s growing sporting isolation on the global stage following President Vladimir Putin’s decision to send troops to Ukraine on February 24. MUMBAI, APR 20 (IANS): After Mitchell Marsh tested positive for Covid-19 on April 18, another Delhi Capitals overseas player has got infected, hours ahead of their match against Punjab Kings at the Brabourne Stadium on Wednesday, says a report in ESPNCricinfo. The latest positive result takes the tally of Covid-19 positive cases in the Delhi camp to six. The report says that the unnamed overseas player had tested positive for Covid-19 after a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) was conducted on Wednesday morning. It added that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will organise another round of testing, which will decide whether Delhi can take the field against Punjab on Wednesday evening. “It is understood that the organisers have kept open the option of rescheduling the match, which on Tuesday was shifted from Pune to Mumbai.”
MUMBAI, APR 20 (PTI): Delhi Capitals showed remarkable resilience to overcome a COVID crisis in their camp and hand Punjab Kings a nine-wicket thrashing in the Indian Premier League here on Wednesday. Delhi, who had a chaotic build up to the game with a sixth COVID positive case being reported on the morning of the game, dished out a clinical bowling display to bowl out Punjab Kings for a below-par 115. Delhi seemed in real hurry to close the game with Prithvi Shaw (41 off 20) and David Warner (60 not out off 30 balls) getting them off to a flying start. Their 83-run partnership off 39 balls ensured Delhi cantered to victory in 10.3 overs, giving a big boost to their net run rate. However, Punjab bowlers could not be blamed on the night with batters letting the team down on a good pitch. With Delhi racing to 81 for no loss in the powerplay, the game was as good as over.
It was Delhi’s third win in six games while Punjab, who had a game to forget, suffered their fourth loss in seven games. Earlier, the Delhi spin trio of Lalit (2/11), Kuldeep (2/24) and Axar (2/10) did the bulk of the damage. Punjab were tottering at 35/2 after losing openers
Mayank Agarwal (24) and Shikhar Dhawan (9) early. Mayank, who recovered from his toe injury that forced him to miss the previous game, started with a cut for a boundary. He then launched into Shardul Thakur, striking three fours in the third over that fetched 14 runs. But off-spinner Lalit removed Dhawan (9) cheaply, after the left-handed batter’s attempted paddle resulted in a nick to Rishabh Pant. Punjab were soon reeling at 46/3, as Axar struck in his first over removing the in-form Liam Livingstone (2), who was stumped by Pant. Wickets kept on tumbling for Punjab as Jonny Bairstow (9) gifted a sitter to Mustafizur at fine-leg in the seventh over off Khaleel Ahmed (2/21). BRIEF SCORES: Punjab Kings 115 all out in 20 overs (Jitesh Sharma 32, Mayank Agarwal 24; Axar Patel 2/10, Lalit Yadav 2/11) lost to Delhi Capitals 119/1 in 10.3 overs (David Warner 60 not out, Prithvi Shaw 41; Rahul Chahar 1/21) by nine wickets

above Manchester City for 24 hours at least Liver pool is back where Manchester United is far from reaching: top of the Premier League.
To know why there is such a deficit in quality now between English football’s most successful clubs just look at how Liverpool’s forwards tormented
United in a 4-0 rout on Tuesday. It wasn’t just Mohamed Salah scoring twice at Anfield, following a hat trick in the 5-0 humiliation
in the reverse fixture. Salah also assisted Luiz Diaz’s opener. Salah’s first was set up by Sadio Mane. And Mane’s goal was provided by Diaz’s pass. All before Salah compounded another night of misery for United with a chipped finish for his second provided by Diaz’s replacement — Diogo Jota. A glorious night for Liverpool ended with four fist pumps by manager Jurgen Klopp in front of the Kop. For the four goals? And maybe for the four trophies the season could yet end with. The League Cup has already been collected and there’s an FA Cup final meeting with Chelsea next month. Before then there’s a Champions League semifinal clash with Real Madrid. And there is the hope Manchester City does not regain first spot in the Premier League, although the two-point lead could be wiped out by the champions beating Brighton on Wednesday.
wrestlers win two more bronze
ULAANBAATAR (MONGOLIA), APR 19 (PTI): S a c h i n S a h r awa t a n d Harpeet Singh grabbed bronze medals on Wednesday as India’s Greco Roman contingent cherished its second best show at the Asian Championship with five medals. Competing in the 67kg category, Sachin dominated the bronze play-off, winning by fall against Uzbekistan’s Mahmud Bakhshilloev. This was after he lost his quarterfinal in a similar manner to Meiirzhan Shermakhanbet from Kazakhstan. Harpreet Singh (82kg) did not have to move a sinew in his medal bout as his rival from Qatar, Jafar Khan M Khan, did not take the mat due to an injury. The medal-winning show from Sachin and Harpreet meant that India ended up with five medals in the Greco Roman event of the championship. In the 2020 edition, In-

dia had won one gold (won by Sunil Kumar) and four bronze medals in Delhi. On the opening day of the championships on Tuesday, Sunil Kumar (87kg), Arjun Halakurki (55kg) and Neeraj (63kg) had won bronze medals. Encouraged by the team’s stupendous show, the Wrestling Federation of India said that it will ensure that the country’s Greco Roman wrestlers will have sparring partners from abroad at the national camp so that their performances keep getting better.
“To win these medals when you have a strong Japan, Iran and Kazakhstan in field is no mean achievement. The wrestlers have asked for better training partners from abroad and we will get them after this Championship,” WFI Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar told PTI. “We have told Indian coaches that they have to run training programme at the camps. We are not hiring any foreign coach now. Regular practice at the camp has given us results this year,” he added.
