Suspension of MPs: Oppn walk out in Parl NEW DELHI, NOV 30 (PTI): The suspension of 12 Rajya Sabha members rocked both houses of Parliament Tuesday with the opposition and the government locking horns over the issue and seeking an apology from each other after Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu rejected an appeal by some leaders to revoke the decision. Members of the Congress and other opposition parties staged a walkout from Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha in protest against the suspensions, even as Naidu justified the action saying they haven’t shown any remorse for their “act of sacrilege” of the House in the previous session in August. The opposition MPs also staged a protest near Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Parliament complex and raised slogans against the government. The suspended MPs would sit outside Gandhi’s statue starting Wednesday morning in protest. Kharge raises issue: Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue inside the house and alleged the motion for suspension by

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi was in gross violation of the rules and action was undemocratic. He again wrote to the chairman urging him to reconsider his decision. In his letter, the Congress leader said excessive action has been taken against the MPs by suspending them without providing them an opportunity to be heard. He noted that the suspension of these members, is an unprecedented excessive action for the
unfortunate incidents. Naidu refuses to revoke suspension: Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday said that the suspension of the 12 MPs will not be revoked. “The members who had committed the sacrilege against the house have not shown remorse. So, I think the appeal by the Opposition [to revoke the suspensions] is not worth considering,” Naidu said. “All procedures in the Rajya Sabha were
done according to rules when 12 MPs were suspended on Monday,” he said. Naidu said he was not considering Mallikarjun Kharge’s appeal of revoking the action as the suspended MPs have not shown any remorse, but on the contrary, justified their acts. He added that the action has been taken and “it is final”. If MPs apologise, then we can review: The government was “forced” to suspend 12 opposition MPs
from this Parliament session for “misbehaviour” - related to the events of August 11, the last day of the previous session- but will consider revoking the suspension if they apologise, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said. “To maintain dignity of the House, government was compulsorily forced to place this proposal of suspension... But if these 12 MPs apologise..., the government is ready to consider their proposal positively with an open heart,” he said. Suspended MP react: Binoy Viswam from the CPI, who was one of the members suspended, said there was no plan to apologise, “What apology? We are not Savarkar to apologise. It is not our culture to write letters of apology.” “This is a government that looks down at parliamentary procedure and at the opposition...We will not bend before them,” Binoy added. He also said that he will look at legal avenues to challenge the move. However, Shiv Sena’s Priyanka Chaturvedi and Anil Desai have distanced themselves from this remark.
Centre extends nationwide containment norms till Dec 31 States, UTs asked to ramp up testing Omicron does not escape RT-PCR, RAT tests NEW DELHI, NOV 30 (PTI):
Amidst a heightened level of concern over the Omicron variant, the Centre on Tuesday advised states and UTs to ramp up testing and undertake effective surveillance of international passengers, asserting that the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 does not escape RT-PCR and RAT tests as it extended the nationwide COVID-19 containment measures till December 31. The strict norms for international passengers arriving in the country, especially from 'at-risk' countries, will also come into effect from December 1 as part of the government's efforts to keep the spread of the new variant at bay. Chairing a high-level meeting with states and UTs to review public health pre-
paredness in the country, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan advised states and UTs not to let their guard down and keep a strict vigil on the international passengers coming to the country through various airports, ports and land border crossings and stressed on strict monitoring of hotspots. He also noted that the revised guidelines and international travel advisories have been shared with the states. During the meeting, DG, ICMR Dr Balram Bhargava informed the participants that the Omicron variant doesn't escape RT-PCR and RAT and hence, states and UTs were advised to ramp up testing for prompt, an official statement said. The Centre also extended the nationwide COVID-19 containment measures till December 31 and Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla wrote to state and UTs, asking them to strictly adhere to the November 25 advisory issued by the Health Ministry, recommending rigorous
screening and testing of all international arrivals. Bhalla also said the contacts of the international travellers must be closely tracked and tested as per the health ministry guidelines, and the samples of travellers turning positive sent to the designated Genome Sequencing Laboratories promptly, as per the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) Guidance Document. Under the new travel norms, effective from Tuesday midnight, RT-PCR tests are mandatory for passengers arriving from 'at-risk' countries and they will be allowed to leave the airport only after the test results come. The government has advised international passengers from 'at-risk' countries to prepare to wait at the airports till the report of RT-PCR test was available and not book connecting flights beforehand. Union Health minister Mansukh Mandaviya told Parliament that Omicron has not been reported in India yet.
GGPNL Award: CM calls for documenting oral storytelling Covid: H&FW caution against lowering guard than 22 countries now was believed to be more virulent than the previous variants as notified by health experts. However, they added that no fatality among the patients of the new variant has been recorded so far. Although there was very little information about Omicron, Neikhrielie hoped that more details would be made available by health experts soon so that necessary preparations could be put into place. He of course claimed that not a single case of the new virus variant has been detected either in the State or country as on Tuesday.
Nodal officer, IDSP, Dr Nyan Kikon emphasised that as there was no complete cure for the virus, the only way to avoid it was through prevention. He stressed following CAB since this has proven to be the most effective tool in combating Covid-19. He urged the citizens to be responsible in order to avoid getting infected or spreading the virus. On holding Hornbill Festival, Neikhrielie mentioned that the health department had shared all data on the current situation vis-à-vis the virus with the government, following (Cont’d on p-8)

DIMAPUR, NOV 30 (NPN): All Nagaland Pre-Service Teachers’ Association (ANPSTA) has expressed surprise over chief minister Neiphiu Rio and school education adviser KT Sukhalu’s statements in Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) regarding excess teachers. In a statement, the association termed the statements as unjust, detrimental and an attempt to deprive employable rights of deserving trained teachers through open means. ANPSTA demanded to know how did the State government claim that there were around 10,000 excess teachers and under what head they were recruited, as the last open recruitment was in 2015- the SSA recruitment conducted by the Department of School Education (DoSE).
Citing reliable sources that annually around 250 teachers retired, ANPSTA wondered how did the question of excess teachers arose and requested the government to share in public domain the basis of the information. ANPSTA asserted that it had the right to know how and when were the vacant posts filled, if not done through backdoor, when NPF Legislative Party leader TR Zeliang and MLA Yitachu expressed concern over shortage of teachers due to ban in appointments. The association urged the chief minister to be unbiased, take a stand against unethical practices and walk the talk by “laying down impeccable undefiled decree” for the future of students and teachers by conducting fair recruitment of trained teachers.

13 arrested for lynching AASU leader in Assam
Animesh Bhuyan Education Minister Ranoj Pegu visited Bhuyan’s house in Dergaon on Tuesday morning as per the instructions of Sarma, who also announced a relief of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the deceased. Meanwhile, Jorhat Superintendent of Police Ankur Jain told PTI that 13 people have been arrested so far from various locations for the barbaric incident, which has sent shockwaves across the state. “The main accused, Neeraj Das alias ‘Kola Lora’ (dark boy), was also arrested. We are talking to
eyewitnesses and corroborating with video footage to find out if more people were involved in the incident,” he said. Das, a drug peddler, was earlier arrested in one such case, but later released on bail as the trial was yet to begin. Several other cases were also lodged against him, Jain said. The lynching took place in broad daylight when an old man fell down from a scooter in front of Bhuyan’s four-wheeler but some people claimed that the AASU leader had hit the two-wheeler. He and his two friends got down from the vehicle to help the elderly person. The old man’s son and some friends, who were nearby, rushed to the spot and started thrashing Bhuyan and his two friends, accusing them of causing the accident. A large number of people were present at the spot but they remained mute spectators. Bhuyan was the educa-

Politics heats up as Mamata arrives in Mumbai M U M BA I , N OV 3 0 (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s two-day visit to Mumbai from Tuesday has generated immense political interest as she is scheduled to meet top Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party leaders, besides leading industrialists. They include NCP President Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena’s Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray and MP and chief spokesperson Sanjay Raut, both members of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance which comprises Congress as the third partner. “The CM of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee-ji will pay a courtesy visit to our party President Sharad Pawar Saheb tomorrow, 3 p.m. at his residence ‘Silver Oak,’ in Mumbai,” said NCP national spokesperson and Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik said. This evening, Raut and Thackeray Jr. were slated to

call on Banerjee - who is also the Trinamool Congress chief - at a five-star hotel in Nariman Point, south Mumbai, though the meeting agenda is kept under wraps. Banerjee landed here this evening and drove down to the famed Shri Siddhivinayak Ganptai Temple at Prabhadevi - which has deep religious significance
for Maharashtrians - to offer prayers. From there, she proceeded to Girgaum Chowpatty Beach and paid homage at the memorial of the 26/11 hero - policeman Tukaram Ombale, who caught the Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab alive there early on November 27, 2008 at the height of the Mumbai terror attacks.
There was speculation in some circles - of a possible meeting with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, but it was categorically ruled out as he presently convalescing after a spinal surgery, though she enquired after his health from Raut. On Wednesday, Banerjee is expected to meet several top industrialists and corporate honchos to lure them for investments in her state, and invite them for the upcoming Bengal Global Business Summit in April 2022. However, the Congress’ Maharashtra General Secretary and Media Coordinator Zakir Ahmed slammed Banerjee’s style of politics, saying she has failed to assess the ground reality and must discard a neo-political novice like Prashant Kishore. “The Congress and Rahul Gandhi fight the RSS, BJP and (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi- (Home
Minister) Amit Shah. But Mamta will challenge Rahul Gandhi and the Congress. Knowingly or unwittingly, she is helping the saffron groups and committing the same blunders that people like Mayawati, Mulayam Singh Yadav and others did in the past,” Ahmed contended. At the same time, NCP’s Malik said that Pawar has repeatedly stressed the need for all opposition parties to unite, but such an alliance was not possible without the Congress. “We feel that if the Sena-NCP-Congress could join hands in Maharashtra, then even the AITC can cooperate with the Congress... If there are some differences, these can be hammered out, let’s see,” Malik said. On a new high after sweeping the West Bengal Assembly elections last May, Banerjee is currently flapping her wings for a national political flight.

Why is India not banning int’l flights, Kejriwal asks PM NEW DELHI, NOV 30 (IANS): In the wake of emergence of a new Covid-19 variant -- Omicron, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban international flights as most of them land in the national capital. “Many countries have stopped incoming flights from Omicron-affected countries. Why are we not following their suit? In the first wave also, we had taken time to stop foreign flights,” Kejriwal said in a tweet, adding that most of the foreign flights come to Delhi, which is the most affected state. He requested the prime minister to “kindly stop flights immediately.” The AAP leader had quoted a media report: “A South Africa returnee has tested positive for COVID-19 in Chandigarh. One of his family members and domes-
tic help are also positive for the disease. The samples of positive cases will be sent for whole-genome sequencing to NCDC, Delhi to ascertain a variant of coronavirus”. With the news of Omicron, being detected in South Africa, scientists and health experts in India have said that new waves of infection are anticipated and unless we act quickly and efficiently, the country will possibly see repeat waves. The variant has also been declared as a variant of concern by the World Health Organisation (WHO). On Sunday, Kejriwal wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to stop international flights from regions witnessing a rise in Covid-19 cases. journed from 2017, when he was found guilty of contempt. Additionally, he was also accused of not disclosing his assets and also secretly trying to dispose of the assets to defeat the purpose of recovery proceedings.

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXI NO. 357 DIMAPUR,WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2021
Nagaland’s Founding Fathers
I
t has been 58 years after Nagaland became the 16th state under the Indian union on December 1,1963. This even had a beginning when the founding fathers of Nagaland state representing various tribes held a series of public meetings under the aegis of Naga People’s Convention (NPC) with the government of India to seek a way out of the hellish nightmare that people in Naga Hills and Tuensang Frontier Division (under NEFA) were facing. The NPC withstood all dangers from those who condemned any negotiation which was deemed as ‘surrender’. Those against the NPC vowed for total political independence and nothing less. The NPC’s negotiations with the government of India led to formation of one administrative unit called Naga Hills Tuensang Area (NHTA) through merger of Naga Hills district and Tuensang Frontier Division(under NEFA) in 1957. However, NPC pursued for better status and eventually signed the 16 Point Agreement with the government of India, which was believed to be almost a carbon copy of the 9-Point Agreement signed between representatives of the Naga National Council (NNC) led by its president Aliba Imti and joint secretary T.Sakhrie with Governor of Assam Sir Akbar Hydari on June 26, 1947. The 9 point agreement fell through when certain developments overshadowed it. NPC pressed for full statehood and the government of India acceded to the demand by signing the 16 Point Agreement in July 1960. The first step towards statehood began when on February 18,1961 a five-member Interim Executive Council headed by the NPC president Dr.Imkongliba Ao as its first chairman and P.Shilu Ao as the first Chief Executive Councilor. Most tragically Dr.Imkongliba was martyred for what he stood for, on August 26,1961 at the hands of an assassin at Mokokchung town. Then in 1962, Parliament then gave the constitutional nod for formation of the new state ‘Nagaland’ in December 1,1963. It may be recalled that India’s second president Dr.S. Radhakrishnan flew by chopper to Kohima on December 1,1963 to inaugurate India’s 16th state. However, this most historic date goes largely unnoticed since December 1 also happens to be the beginning of the 10-day Hornbill Festival. All the focus of attention has been on the festival and at times, it is quite strange that the state neglects to put on record the importance of the day. It also shows how the state and its leaders seem to be suggesting that they either care less or don’t care at all. The mindset also exposes how the vain pursuit of pleasure has overtaken the sense of acknowledging the services rendered by the founding fathers of Nagaland. It may also be noted that Nagaland enjoys a super special constitutional status under Article 371A which some legal experts say, is far superior to Article 370 that existed for Jammu and Kashmir. The legal experts say while Article 370 was constitutionally a temporary provision that accorded special status for J&K, the Article 371A on the other hand was a constitutional guarantee. The NPC leaders could have accepted the pre-1960 status but they pressed on determinedly and were able to negotiate a state with full guarantee. In this, perhaps people of Nagaland should acknowledge their founding fathers who led Nagas to a tryst with destiny.
DailyDevotion “By the Grace of God I Am What I Am”
By the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain… —1 Corinthians 15:10 The way we continually talk about our own inabilities is an insult to our Creator. To complain over our incompetence is to accuse God falsely of having overlooked us. Get into the habit of examining from God’s perspective those things that sound so humble to men. You will be amazed at how unbelievably inappropriate and disrespectful they are to Him. We say things such as, “Oh, I shouldn’t claim to be sanctified; I’m not a saint.” But to say that before God means, “No, Lord, it is impossible for You to save and sanctify me; there are opportunities I have not had and so many imperfections in my brain and body; no, Lord, it isn’t possible.” That may sound wonderfully humble to others, but before God it is an attitude of defiance. Conversely, the things that sound humble before God may sound exactly the opposite to people. To say, “Thank God, I know I am saved and sanctified,” is in God’s eyes the purest expression of humility. It means you have so completely surrendered yourself to God that you know He is true. Never worry about whether what you say sounds humble before others or not. But always be humble before God, and allow Him to be your all in all. There is only one relationship that really matters, and that is your personal relationship to your personal Redeemer and Lord. If you maintain that at all costs, letting everything else go, God will fulfill His purpose through your life. One individual life may be of priceless value to God’s purposes, and yours may be that life.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2021
Post-mortem
Paramountcy of women: India’s future dependent on A t the time of India’s Independence, India was a low-income, poverty-ridden, laden with all ills such as poor life expectancy, high-infant mortality rate (IMR), but with high-fertility. If we apply a parameter known as Median age that divides a country’s population into two halves – younger and older, the data bring more clarity to it. In the 1950s, India’s median age was below 20, a level seen across most of Africa now. Incidentally, India’s median age is still among the youngest in the world. It has itched closer to where Europe was in the 1950s. In another domain, India’s total fertility rate – births per woman – has declined from 5.9 in the 1959s, when the UK and the US were at 2.2 and 3.3 respectively, to 2.2 now. It is among the lowest in large Asian countries, which erased the fears of ‘population explosion’. Apparently, since the 1950s, India’s life expectancy has increased from 37 years to 69 years. While considering fertility rate of women, the findings of the fifth National Family Health Survey confirmed that India’s total fertility rate (TFR), the average number of children born per woman, has finally dipped below the replacement level of 2.1. In addition to it, data revealed that women could outnumber men (1020-
1000). While on the other, 2011 census findings revealed that 940 females per 1,000 males. Sex ratio has started tilting towards the males. Politicians who have been over-emphasizing population explosive bomb should focus on job creation, because the working age population would rise for a while tends to increase at least for the present. Gender parity and women’s equality though spoken in the national and international fora, in reality, the future of girl children and women continues to be bleak. This should be borne in mind and not evaded or undermined. ASER surveys points out that between 20062016, girls out of school between ages 11-14 fell to 4.1% from 10.3% from over 20%. Girls aged between 15-16 not enrolled in school dipped to 13.5% from over 20%. Women aged 15-19 pregnant or already mothers declined in this period from 16% to 6.8%. Several data, facts and figures point to women gaining autonomy such as nearly 80% of bank accounts of women risen from 54%. (NFHS-4 (2015-16); 54% have mobile phones against 46%. earlier; 77% used hygienic methods during menstruation as against 57% earlier. Though there have been marginal improvements in few areas, but indicators show that in many areas India has failed.
In the economic domain, the role and participation of women continues to remain bleak. For example, women employed in the past 12 months marginally rose to 25.4% from 24.6% earlier; health insurance coverage has reached merely 41% of households. Rising figures of anemic women and children since 2015-16 have reached 67% of children under 6 and nearly 60% of women under 60 stands against the global average of 33% anemic women in reproductive age – point to intensifying malnutrition that India’s food security and nutrition supplementation schemes have failed to address to which they have been directed. Rape and abuse of girl children are on the rise stupendously. Though we talk about gender parity and empowerment of women, discrimination and exploitation of women in polity, economy, socio-religio-cultural and educational domains are visibly present. The root cause is patriarchy, wherein intersectionality of power operatives in covert and overt ways. Patriarchy functions in subtle ways manifesting within families, communities and in the society. Attacks against women in diverse ways and raping women and then killing women and girls in crude and cruel ways have become somewhat a regular pattern in the India so-
ciety. We are in the 3rd decade of the 21st Century with tall claims and laudable achievements. Issuing statements and talking big about women hardly matches to the happening for women we have been witnessing day-in and dayout. The episodes happening across the country have been horrifying and mindboggling because of the fact that our societal order is constructed on patriarchy in such ways that totally negates and relegates women as inferior and objects and thus commodified. Women in the Indian by and large have hardly been treated as equals with dignity, value and respect. It is intensely regressive and deeply entrenched in maledominance, and so, a long way to go to dismantle. The present equation is solidly built on male dominance. Indian society is struggling to recognizing women on par with men A long way to go for the society to mature, to accept and to acknowledge that both men and women enjoy equal rights, freedom and dignity respecting one another. In fact, when we proudly say that we have 88% institutional births as against 78% signifies that secondary healthcare systems – community and district hospitals are accessible to more people A functional health system is indeed considered as an important link
Education for CWSN: NEP’s Recommendations & SS’s provisions
that adds to others aspects leading to progress and development. COVID-19 has leveraged the deficiencies of our public and private health systems to deplorable levels. Women experienced the severity of COVID-19. Patriarchy is pervasive. Over centuries it has penetrated into the base structure of our society and thus penetrated into all facets of the Indian society. Enjoined with caste, patriarchy further cuts into the hierarchical schema leveraging oppressive and exploitative fissures against women in appalling ways. Despite all odds, women across the country keep resisting and fighting for their rights and privileges. Movements for the promotion of women’s rights that demands their autonomous agency to be recognized and acknowledge in all societal facets. Forces of patriarchy unleash its diabolical tentacles countering and deterring the progression of the women’s movements that are gaining momentum. Women’s movements have made significant inroads smashing the all kinds of obstacles that patriarchal forces keep inflicting against women. Women have all the right to take their due space and share as they contribute to family, community and society in multiple ways and so are pivotal. Unless and
until their status as equals is recognized enjoined with innate strengths and innovative skills, without them India society and India as a country shall never achieve inclusive progress and development. Patriarchy is corrosive and counter-productive. By all means it ought to be countered by those who are concerned about equality, dignity and fraternity. As Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen has rightly pointed that “Anything that increases the voice of young women tends therefore to reduce the fertility rate.” A wise nuanced statement from Amartya Sen that unpacks the intricacies involved within the Indian society in view of the fact that how patriarchal mind-set treats women. For any society to survive and progress there should be constant flow of human beings. Fertility rate is the crucial determining factor to the present and future of any society. Women should never be commodified as means for something else, rather they are the means and ends. A nation/society that respects women will enjoy the fertility in totality. Throttling and silencing the voice of women tantamount to destroying the core of human existence because women are centripetal and enlivening force and agency as well. Dr. John Mohan Razu

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2021
spoken to PM, Amit Shah Channi writes to PM Modi, demands Parl panel seeks correct ‘Have on alliance’: Amarinder Singh complete waiver of farmers’ debt portrayal of freedom fighters today, our own feedback is that there’s a total swing towards the BJP. Many Hindus are supporting the BJP and my party. There are 36% Hindus in Punjab and we are going to take up that chunk, more than the Congress. Hopefully, we will also get a lot of support from farmers,” he said. On BJP’s communal language and tone, Singh said he was not at all uncomfortable with it and cited the example of the Akali Dal that was in alliance with BJP for over two decades. Akalis are a party of Sikhs and they have had no problem with the BJP, he said, stressing that communalism wasn’t an issue in Punjab. “I have never been involved in any way in any communal business, especially in Punjab. This has been one state where we call ourselves members of Punjabiyat, which means all the religions are part of one family,” he said. When asked about violent and abusive comments by some BJP leaders against the protesting farmers, Mr Singh dismissed them as rhetorical remarks made in the heat of the moment.
CHANDIGARH, NOV 30 (PTI): A day after Parliament passed a Bill to repeal the farm laws, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a complete waiver of the debt of farmers and farm labourers. Channi also said his government is ready to share with the Centre a part of the cost of debt waiver. He said farmer leaders had recently met him in Chandigarh with their demands and only one major issue that remained pending was that of farm debt. “With your announcement of revoking the three farm laws, the farmers and the government have moved a step closer to resolving some major pending issues which have taken centre stage along with the demand to repeal three farm laws. The foremost of these being agricultural debt,” said Channi in his letter to the prime minister. There is a ray of hope after the Government of India’s changed stance, he wrote. “Prime Minister Sir, the farmers of Punjab are the ones who picked up the gauntlet of food security of the nation and became the
of agricultural loans which forms the root cause of suicides by them and stress in the rural economy.” “I, therefore, extend an invitation to you to accept my proposal of complete waiver of farmers’ and farm labourers’ debt. My government is ready to take over our share of this burden of debt along with the Government of India,” Channi said in the letter. “A Centre-state shared scheme of an appropriate ratio spread over some time with proper modalities needs to be framed to handle this issue and end the debt of our farmers and farm labourers once and for all,” he said. The chief minister stressed that despite the stressed revenues of the state government, “no sacrifice would be big enough than the weight of this moral obligation that we owe to farmer fraternity”. “Let’s make a fresh start and work towards improving the entire ecosystem of agriculture in Punjab in particular and the nation in general. We as stakeholders are ready to commit ourselves to any new arrangement that is decided mutually between all the stakeholders,” Channi urged the prime minister.
NEW DELHI, NOV 30 (PTI): Noting that many historical figures and freedom fighters have been portrayed in an incorrect manner as “offenders”, a parliamentary panel has recommended that wrong portrayal of the heroes of India’s freedom struggle should be corrected to give them due respect in history textbooks. The standing committee report, titled “Reforms in Content and Design of School Text Books”, lays emphasis on the need to make additions from Sikh and Maratha history in the curriculum as well as making the books genderinclusive. The report of the panel headed by Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, which was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, noted that Indian history writing needs a thorough professional review due to ideological biases and political considerations suffered by it in the past. Knowledge from the four Vedas -- Sama Veda, Yajur Veda, Atharva Veda and Rig Veda -- and the Bhagavad Gita should also be part of the syllabus.
Parts from Agam Literature (scriptures from Jainism, including preachings from Lord Mahavir) should be included too, the panel said. “The committee during its interaction noted that many of the historical figures and freedom fighters of Indian freedom struggle have been portrayed in an incorrect manner as offenders. Therefore, the Committee is of the view that wrong portrayal of our heroes of freedom struggle should be corrected and they should be given due respect in our history textbooks,” the report said. “...in the context of the unequal representation of various periods and dynasties in the history textbooks by the stakeholders, (the Committee) observes that NCERT should take a relook at the guidelines for the writing of the history textbooks so that equal weightage and importance is given to the various eras, periods and events in the history textbooks,” it added. The panel noted that school textbooks do not give adequate coverage to some of the great Indian empires like that of Vikramaditya,

Bihar MLAs engage in ugly spat outside assembly PATNA, NOV 30 (PTI): The Bihar legislature premises here witnessed an unseemly sight on Tuesday when two MLAs of rival political groups engaged in a nasty verbal exchange and virtually came to blows. B J P M L A S a n j ay Saraogi and RJD legislator Bhai Virendra were brought face to face by television journalists to offer their respective takes on some issue, a common practice
whenever the House is in session. Differences of opinion soon led to frayed tempers that gave a lie to the camaraderie, which is often seen among the political class of Bihar. In the heat of the moment, Saraogi addressed Bhai Virendra as “tum”, the Hindi pronoun usually reserved for equals or juniors. The RJD MLA, who
is senior to Saraogi by many years, blew the fuse and roared, “How dare you speak to me like that”. A red-faced Saraogi tried to hold his ground with the retort “you people have looted the state for years” - an allusion to the RJD’s 15 years in power.

The police who escorted Waze were from Navi Mumbai police as he is lodged in Taloja jail. Both Waze and Singh are co-accused in an extortion case filed in Goregaon, a Mumbai suburb. Speaking to reporters in Pune, Nawab Malik alleged that Singh, who was then Mumbai police commissioner, and Waze planned the `Antilia’ bomb scare episode. An explosives-laden SUV was found near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s residence `Antilia’ in south Mumbai in February this year. A few days later, businessman Mansukh Hiran, who had claimed that the
SUV had been stolen from his possession, was found dead in a creek in neighbouring Thane district. “Param Bir Singh and Sachin Waze had planned the Antilia bomb threat. They had even made a fake passport with the entry and exit stamps of Pakistan for a goon. If Mansukh Hiran hadn’t been killed or had he surrendered, the the duo had planned the fake encounter of the goon, showing him as a terrorist,” Malik claimed. “Singh and Waze... were briefing the home minister (Anil Deshmukh, who later resigned) and the CM (Uddhav Thackeray) and based on it the latter were speaking in the legislature. Both the officers were misleading the minister,” Malik claimed. Singh was not available for comment on Malik’s allegations.

When they toiled on the soil, their sons defended the sensitive borders with their lives,” Channi wrote in the letter. India is indebted to these sons of the soil, he said. “I am of the firm opinion that this great nation, which they have served for decades, now owes a moral obligation to shake its inertia and completely write off agricultural debt, including that of farm labourers.” The chief minister said no banking or non-banking institution should knock the doors of “our farmers or farm labour for recovery

NEW DELHI, NOV 30 (PTI): Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday hit out at the Uttar Pradesh government over the law and order situation, saying the BJP may paint a rosy picture but the factual crime statistics in the state are “scary”. Her attack on the Yogi Adityanath dispensation came over a media report which claimed that there had been seven murders in seven days in Gorakhpur district. “BJP ki door been ke dhol suhavne hain, lekin asliyat mein UP mein apradh ke aankde daravne hain (BJP may be painting a rosy picture but in reality, the crime statistics in UP are scary),” Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi. “Law and order in the chief minister’s area stand surrendered to criminals, you can well imagine the condition in the rest of the state,” the Congress leader said. The Cong ress has been attacking the state government over the issue of law and order, alleging that criminal activities are rampant, a claim denied by the Yogi Adityanath dispensation.
MUMBAI, NOV 30 (PTI): The Maharashtra government on Tuesday ordered a probe into a meeting between dismissed police officer Sachin Waze and IPS officer Param Bir Singh which has caused a flutter as Waze is in judicial custody and both are accused in an extortion case. State minister Nawab Malik, meanwhile, accused Waze and Singh of planning the `Antilia’ bomb threat episode which rocked the state in March this year. “Waze is in judicial custody and as per the rules he is not supposed to meet anyone. I have instructed Mumbai police commissioner Hemant Nagrale to probe the matter,” state Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil told reporters here. He also objected to Singh -- now Director General of Home Guards who
Cholas, Chalukyas, Vijaynagar, Gondwana or that of Travancore and Ahoms of North-Eastern region, whose contributions in expansion of India’s standing on the world stage cannot be ignored. “New discoveries are taking place, new facts are coming up, and textbooks just cannot remain the same. This is worsened if the history is written with certain pre-conceived biases resulting out of politically-constrained ideological bindings,” the panel said. “History writing in India has suffered on these unacceptable considerations, and it must be extracted -and liberated -- out of gross subjectivity and ideological bias to transparent objectivity, and openness of mind, willingness to enter into dialogue with those holding diametrically opposite views,” it added. The Committee noted that new facts have emerged around us, including Aryan invasion theory, Saraswati River, Ram Setu, and so many more, solely because of new scientific advancements and new tools that have led to new researches.
NEW DELHI, NOV 30 (AGENCIES): My only condition for an alliance with the BJP was the resolution of the farmers’ agitation, former Chief Minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh said about his new party’s alliance with the BJP. “I have already met the Home Minister and spoken to him about an alliance. On Saturday, I hope to see the BJP president,” he told NDTV, hinting that a formal announcement could be expected soon. He said that a formal alliance with the BJP can be worked on now that the three contentious farm bills have been repealed and other issues raised by farmers are being discussed. Rubbishing swipes from the Congress that he doesn’t actually have any MLAs supporting him, he said many Congress MLAs are eager to join him and are just waiting for the model code of conduct to be enforced. Singh also refuted Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s comment that Mr Singh is harming his own chances in the assembly elections by allying with the BJP, which he claims has no support in the state. “As of

A Bill on Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency for introduction in the Lok Sabha has been included in the Lok Sabha Bulletin-Part II, as part of the government business expected to be taken up during the ongoing winter session. He remarked that if people followed CABs, there should not be any cause for worry about another outbreak of the pandemic since the recent data had shown that the drop in new cases and fatality had come down to a very safe level. He pointed out that although the State couldn’t perform well in administering the first dose of Covid vaccine, which was 59.1% against the national average of 85%, it had done well in administering the second dose – 43.8% against the
data was released, which showed a revival in October at 7.5 per cent as compared to a moderation seen at 4.5 per cent in the previous month. The sharp sequential growth of the core index at 7.3 per cent was driven by a massive recovery in coal production along with healthy sequential growth in output of cement, fertilisers and refinery products. Except for electricity generation, which has seen a slight sequential contraction due to both seasonal factors and the earlier coal shortage, there has been a broad-based growth across all the core segments, raising hopes of an improving momentum in industrial activity. The core sector output has exceeded the prepandemic levels with the weighted average index in April-October higher by 0.6 per cent as compared to the same period in 2019. Six segments of the core sector have shown healthy positive growth over this seven-month period visa-vis that in FY20, except for crude oil and refined petroleum products.

September period of 2021. He also said the seminal second-generation reforms would help the country grow by over 7 per cent during this decade. With regard to fiscal deficit, he said the Budget estimate is likely to be met. The government estimates a fiscal deficit of 6.8 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) for the current financial year ending on March 31, 2022. Commenting on the GDP numbers, former finance minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said it was not yet a V-shaped recovery and there are sectors of the economy that are still “crippled” and need help to recover. “Let us extend a cautious welcome. It is NOT yet a ‘V’ shaped recovery. The fine print will bear that out,” he tweeted. “In 202122, GDP growth in Q1 was 20.1 percent on a previous year’s Q1 growth of -24.4 percent. In Q2, the growth is reported as 8.4 percent on a previous year’s Q2 growth of -7.4 percent”. Separately, core sector

down. GVA clocked 8.5 per cent year-on-year growth in July-September 2021 and the data shows broad-based expansion across sectors. While private consumption is likely to pick up as the economy nears complete normalisation, a new coronavirus variant has emerged as the top threat to global recovery. Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) K V Subramanian said India is expected to log double-digit growth in the current financial year (April 2021 to March 2022), aided by rising demand and a robust banking sector. “The overall growth for the first half has been 13.7 per cent so even a little more than 6 per cent growth in the subsequent quarters should be able to deliver doubledigit growth for this year,” he said. “We are projecting 6.5-7 per cent next year and thereafter 7 per cent plus over different scenarios.” India’s GDP projection for 2021 compares with 8 per cent projected for China and 6 per cent for the US. Agriculture chipped in on the back of a good monsoon, delivering backto-back 4.5 per cent growth. Manufacturing posted a 5.5 per cent increase, reflecting both a recovery in domestic demand and buoyant exports. The effect of unlocking was reflected in the 7-8 per cent growth in construction, trade, hotels, transport and financial services. What seemed to have moved the needle meaningfully was the strong 17.4 per cent growth in government services that include public administration and defence. The absolute real GDP value at Rs 35.73 lakh crore has exceeded the pre-pandemic levels of Q2 FY20 by 0.33 per cent. NEW DELHI, NOV 30 (PTI): The Indian economy remained on track to post the fastest growth among major economies this year as its GDP expanded by a better-than-expected 8.4 per cent in the July-September quarter to cross pre-pandemic levels. The GDP growth in the second quarter of the current fiscal (2021-22) was slower than the 20.1 per cent expansion in the previous quarter -- which largely reflected a bounce back from last year’s crash -- but was better than the contraction of 7.4 per cent in July-September 2020, official data released on Tuesday showed. With economic activities returning back to normalcy post the second wave of pandemic earlier this year, this is the fourth consecutive quarter of positive growth after a two-quarter contraction witnessed last year. The Q2 FY22 GDP print reflects a healthy recovery in private consumption expenditure driven by an unlock of the economy, the declining intensity of the pandemic and the sig-

Tsunami fears as La Palma volcano New variant poses ‘very high’ risk: WHO warns eruption rages on even after 70 days
GENEVA, NOV 30 (AP): The World Health Organisation warned Monday that the global risk from the omicron variant is “very high” based on the early evidence, saying the mutated coronavirus could lead to surges with “severe consequences.” The assessment from the U.N. health agency, contained in a technical paper issued to member states, amounted to WHO’s strongest, most explicit warning yet about the new version that was first identified days ago by researchers in South Africa. It came as a widening circle of countries around the world reported cases of the variant and moved to slam their doors in an act-now-ask-questions-later approach while scientists race to figure out just how dangerous the mutant version might be. Japan announced it is barring entry to all foreign visitors, joining Israel in

doing so. Morocco banned all incoming flights. Other countries, including the U.S. and members of the European Union, have moved to prohibit travellers arriving from southern Africa. WHO said there are “considerable uncertainties” about the omicron variant. But it said preliminary evidence raises the possibility that the variant has mutations that could help it both evade an immune-system response and boost its ability to spread from one person to another.
“Depending on these characteristics, there could be future surges of COVID-19, which could have severe consequences, depending on a number of factors, including where surges may take place,” it added. “The overall global risk ... is assessed as very high.” The WHO stressed that while scientists are hunting evidence to better understand this variant, countries should accelerate vaccinations as quickly as possible. While no deaths linked to omicron have been re-
ported so far, little is known for certain about the variant, including whether it is more contagious, more likely to cause serious illness or more able to evade vaccines. Last week, a WHO advisory panel said it might be more likely to re-infect people who have already had a bout with COVID-19. Scientists have long warned that the virus will keep finding new ways to exploit weaknesses in the world’s vaccination drive, and its discovery in Africa occurred in a continent where under 7% of the population is vaccinated. “The emergence of the omicron variant has fulfilled, in a precise way, the predictions of the scientists who warned that the elevated transmission of the virus in areas with limited access to vaccine would speed its evolution,” said Dr. Richard Hatchett, head of CEPI, one of the founders of the U.N.-backed global vaccine sharing initiative COVAX.
Spain on Monday became one of the latest countries to report its first confirmed omicron case, detected in a traveler who returned Sunday from South Africa after making a stopover in Amsterdam. While the majority of omicron infections recorded around the world have been in travellers arriving from abroad, cases in Portugal and Scotland have raised fears that the variant may already be spreading locally. “Many of us might think we are done with COVID-19. It’s not done with us,” warned Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO’s director-general. Days after the variant sent a shudder through the financial world nearly two years into the pandemic that has killed over 5 million people, markets had a mixed reaction Monday. European stocks rebounded and Wall Street steadied itself, while Asian markets fell further.
Sharma Oli re-elected UML Chairman by huge margin KATHMANDU, NOV 30 (IANS): Former Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli was elected as Chairman of the Nepal Communist Party-UML for the second time on Tuesday, defeating senior party leader, Bhim Bahadur Rawal, by a huge margin. The party is currently holding the 10th national Congress to elect
the new party leadership where Oli had imposed his decision on the selection of a new leadership without voting. As past party Chairman, he read out the list of the party office bearers and the central committee on Sunday. But a section of the party leaders opposed Oli’s single decision to nominate the party’s office bearers
and Central Committee members and demanded the elections though they knew that they were sure to lose. After strong reservations from party leaders to his actions, Oli finally agreed to go for elections. As many as 2,175 representatives from across the country voted to elect 301 members for the new Cen-
tral Committee. As per the election results that are all set to be announced by Tuesday evening, Oli had secured 1,840 votes while his rival, Rawal has obtained just 223 votes, according to the CPN-UML leader, Rajan Bhattarai. The final announcement will be made after completing the counting of
votes for different posts but Oli’s camp is set to make a sweep. Oli’s aides have won the rest of the office bearers’ posts including to the Central Committee. Insiders say even though elections happened, it is certain that everyone proposed by Oli is going to win, which will establish Oli’s grip on the party.
Lava flows as volcano continues to erupt on the Canary island of La Palma, Tuesday. (AP/PTI)
LA PALMA, NOV 30 (AGENCIES): A volcanic eruption in La Palma continues to rage on after more than 10 weeks, sparking fears of a potential tsunami. The eruption began on September 19 and has continued for more than 70 days. This means it has become the longest seen volcanic eruption on the island, according to EuroWeekly. Before this, the record belonged to a 66-day eruption which began in late 1677 and ended in early 1678. Volcanodiscovery. com reports that well over 1,000 earthquakes were reported at the Spanish island in the past two weeks. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center publishes
a tsunami watch when an earthquake occurs with a magnitude over 7.5. Most those recorded in the past two weeks have had a magnitude of between 2 and 3, with close to a third coming in at between 3 and 4. But the figures are creeping upwards, with the largest earthquake since the eruption began being registered on Friday morning. This came in with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale, sparking new fears that a tsunami could be triggered. The risk of tsunamis is also increased by landslides, which the volcano on La Palma is believed to be prone to. On Sunday morning, several new vents opened at the northern and
northeastern base of the volcano’s main cone. Volcano Discovery reported that this produced new lava fountains and emitted new lava flows and came as a result of a surge in magma under the surface. Reuters fact checkers have, however, played down fears of the eruption sparking a so-called “mega tsunami” that could hit the US East Coast. The Canary Islands Government plans to provide 200 temporary homes for families who have lost their own homes to the lava. Housing minister Sebastian Franquis said moving families into new permanent housing will take years. La Palma is home to around 83,000 residents.
Attack on Ukraine would be costly, NATO warns Moscow
RIGA, NOV 30 (AGENCIES): Russia would pay a high price for any new military aggression against Ukraine, NATO and the United States warned on Tuesday as the Western military alliance met to discuss Moscow’s intentions for massing troops on the border of the former Soviet republic. The West has already shown that it can wield economic, financial and political sanctions against Moscow, NATO SecretaryGeneral Jens Stoltenberg told reporters ahead of talks of the alliance’s foreign ministers in the Latvian capital Riga. “There will be a high price to pay for Russia if

they once again use force against the independence of the nation, Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to brief his 29 NATO counterparts on Washington’s intelligence on what is going on at the alliance’s eastern flank and in Ukraine, which is not a member. “Any escalatory actions by Russia would be a great concern to the United States... and any renewed aggression would trigger serious consequences,” he said at a news conference before the meeting. “We will be consulting closely with NATO allies and partners in the days ahead... about whether there are other steps that we should take as an alliance to strengthen our defences, strengthen our resilience, strengthen our capacity.” Kyiv’s aspirations for integration with the West have triggered a standoff with Moscow.
BAKU (AZERBAIJAN), NOV 30 (AP): A military helicopter crashed in Azerbaijan during a training flight on Tuesday, killing 14 people and wounding two more, Azerbaijani authorities said. The helicopter of Azerbaijan’s State Border Guard service crashed on Tuesday morning during a flight over the Garaeybat training ground in the east of Azerbaijan, according to a joint statement of the border guard service and Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s office. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash, which the two state agencies are investigating.

CHATTOGRAM, NOV 30 (IANS): Pakistan secured a convincing eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the opening Test here with skipper Babar Azam and Azhar Ali guiding the tourists to victory after fine half centuries by Abid Ali and Abdullah Shafique had laid the platform for a win on Monday evening. Though Bangladesh claimed two big wickets -- of overnight batters Abid Ali (91) and Shafique (73) -midway through the morning session, they still needed a miracle to deny the tourists victory early on the fifth day. And, Babar Azam (13 not out) and Azhar Ali (24 not out) completed the formalities in the morning session to help Pakistan take a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series. Earlier, Pakistan resumed the day on 109/0, with only 93 needed and 10 wickets in hand. After scoring just one run in the

first three overs, Abid struck a boundary off Taijul Islam. In the spinner’s next over, the Pakistan opener smashed him for three fours in a row with victory in clear sight. In the 10th over of the day, the introduction on Mehidy Hasan did the trick for Bangladesh. He scalped the wicket of Shafique, trapping him in front for 73 and breaking the productive opening partnership of 151. Azhar Ali joined Abid at the crease, coming in at No.3. The latter crunched
a couple of boundaries and moved into the nineties but Taijul got the better off Abid’s nerves as he had him trapped lbw for 91. Abid was declared ‘Player of the Match’ for his contribution with the bat -- 133 and 91. Shafique, who made his Test debut, had scores of 52 and 73. Messi wins record seventh Ballon d’Or Goals galore as Odisha beat East Bengal BARCELONA’S ALEXIA PUTELLAS CLAIMS WOMEN’S AWARD
PARIS, NOV 30 (IANS): Argentina’s Lionel Messi has bagged the Ballon d’Or award for a record-extending seventh time, as his former club Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas clinched the women’s award after a stellar season with the Catalan club. Messi, 34, beat another favourite Robert Lewandowski of Poland to receive the trophy from his friend Luis Suarez late on Monday night. Now the Paris SaintGermain (PSG) striker is two triumphs clear of arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo as the five-time winner finished sixth this year, the first time that he was voted out of the top three since 2010. Paris Saint-Germain dominated the award from 2009 to 2012 and won another two in 2015 and 2019, Xinhua repor ts. “It’s incredible to be here again,” Messi said at the ceremony, which was held at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. “Two years ago I thought it was the last time. People were start-

ing to ask me when I was going to retire but now I’m here in Paris and very happy,” he added. Messi helped his country win the Copa America this summer which ended his longwaiting title-drought with the senior national team. He was also named the best player of the tournament and claimed the Golden Boot. Despite the shocking exit from Barcelona in August, he has ended the last season with the La Liga
giants in style, scoring 38 goals in 48 games and winning the Copa del Rey. “It’s a special year for me with this Copa America title. It meant a lot to win at the Maracana stadium and I was so happy to celebrate with the people from Argentina,” Messi said. “I don’t know if it’s the best year of my life -- I’ve had a long career -- but it was a special one with the title with Argentina after the tough times and the criticism.”
Bayern Munich forward Lewandowski came second with only 38 points behind Messi (613 vs 580), which proved that the 170 juries from all over the world also highly recognised the prolific striker’s performance. Lewandowski has been the favourite to claim the award in 2020, but the organisers finally cancelled the vote due to the coronavirus pandemic. Even Messi admitted that his biggest contender “deserved to win it last year”. The captain of Poland scored 53 goals in all competitions in 2021 for Bayern and was awarded the ‘Striker of The Year’ prize, a new award that was only announced hours before the ceremony began. Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, having won the Champions League with his club and Euro 2020 with Italy, ranked third in the vote as Karim Benzema of Real Madrid, who is enjoying an impressive run this season, was in the fourth place. Putellas, captaining Barcelona to
a treble-winning season, won the third edition of the women’s Ballon d’Or. Her Barcelona and Spain teammate Jennifer Hermoso was second, with Sam Kerr of Chelsea coming in third. The 27-year-old Putellas was not the only Barcelona player to take a prize the night as the 19-year-old Pedri won the Kopa Trophy for the best player aged under-21. Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, who helped Italy win Euro 2020 in which he was named the best player, won the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper. Winners list of the 2021 Ballon d’Or: Ballon d’Or - Lionel Messi, Paris Saint-Germain, Argentina Wo m e n’s B a l l o n d’Or - Alexia Putellas, Barcelona, Spain Striker of the year - Rober Lewandowski, Bayern Munichen, Poland Kopa Trophy - Pedri (Pedro Gonzalez Lopez), Barcelona, Spain Yachine Trophy Gianluigi Donnarumma, Paris Saint-Germain, Italy.
VASCO, NOV 30 (IANS): Odisha FC came from behind to beat SC East Bengal 6-4 in the 2021-22 Hero Indian Super League at Tilak Maidan Stadium here on Tuesday. Darren Sidoel (13’) opened the scoring for the Kolkata side with Semboi Haokip (80’) and Daniel Chima (90’, 90+2’P) also getting into the scoresheet. However, goals from Hector Rodas (33’, 40’), Javi Hernandez (45’), Aridai Suarez (71’, 90+4’), and Isak Vanlalruatfela (82’) left the red and yellows still winless as the Bhubaneswar-based side equal ATK Mohun Bagan with six points on top of the table. It took under thirteen minutes for the floodgates to open. East Bengal started proceedings. Veteran Raju Gaikwad in one of his signature long throw-ins delivered into the box. A mistimed clearance from the Odisha defence saw the ball put in space for Sidoel, who banged into the top-right corner of the net. Odisha had the chance to equalise soon with Nandhakumar Sekar shooting wide. However, amends were made by defender Hector Rodas. The former Levante man first nodded home a long freekick delivered from Javi where SC
Odisha FC players celebrate after their side goal.
East Bengal defenders failed to mark Rodas’ physical presence. The same pair that linked up again for Odisha to take the lead. Javi’s corner-kick was headed into the net by Rodas who left Raju Gaikwad for dead inside the box, making it 2-1. It could have been a hat-trick for both Rodas and Javi in the goals and assists department but this time, Javi, the former ATK Mohun Bagan man scored a high-quality Olympic goal, curving the ball past the goalkeeper’s reach from the flag-kick before halftime. While Javi never made it back onto the pitch post the break, Kiko Ramirez went for the offensive. Aridai Suarez and Jonathas were introduced with Mongil making way.
There was a triple change for the Kolkata side at the hour mark too. Chima, Mrcela, and Amarjit were brought in, shuffling in fresh legs. Aridai’s ballistic freekick left Suvam Sen no chance as he started the second-half goal show. The first five goals in the match got delivered through set-pieces. Semboi Haokip nodded in a second-half consolation, heading in a swerving delivery from Mohd Rafique. But Isak who came on as a substitute also joined the party with a fine sharp strike. Chima too got his first two goals in East Bengal colours in the dying embers of the game but Aridai delivered the final blow in a ten-game thriller. WEDNESDAY’S MATCH

L O N D O N, N OV 3 0 (AGENCIES): Cristiano Ronaldo has hit back at comments made by Ballon d’Or organiser Pascal Ferre, saying the editor-inchief of France Football “lied” about his rivalry with Lionel Messi. Ferre told the New York Times on Friday that Manchester United for-
ward Ronaldo’s sole ambition was to retire with more of the awards for the world’s best player than Messi. Argentine Messi, who joined Paris St Germain on a free transfer from Barcelona during the close season, beat Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski and Chelsea mid-
fielder Jorginho to claim a record-extending seventh Ballon d’Or award. “Pascal Ferre lied, he used my name to promote himself and to promote the publication he works for,” Ronaldo, who has won the award five times, said in an Instagram post on Monday. “It is unacceptable that the person responsible for awarding such a prestigious prize could lie in this way, in absolute disrespect for someone who has always respected France Football and the Ballon d’Or.” France Football did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment on Ronaldo’s post. “I always win for myself and for the clubs I represent, I win for myself and for those who love me. I don’t win against someone,” added the Portugal forward. “The biggest ambition of my career is to leave my name written in golden letters in the history of world football.”
Z U R I C H , N OV 3 0 (AGENCIES): FIFA have announced an 11-player shortlist for this year’s Puskas Award, with Patrik Schick’s goal against Scotland at Euro 2020 among the nominees. Czech forward Schick beat goalkeeper David Marshall with one of the most remarkable goals in European Championship history, a stunning 45-metre strike from just inside the halfway line as his team beat Scotland 2-0. Schick’s effort was subsequently voted goal of the tournament. Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min won the award in 2020 for his solo effort against Burnley in the Premier League in which he ran nearly the length of the pitch, dribbling past several Burnley defenders before scoring. Manchester City’s Caroline Weir makes a second consecutive appearance in the shortlist, courtesy of a deft chip from the edge of the box in an FA Women’s Super League derby match against Manchester United.

The 19-year-old Swede has underlined his growing credentials with sterling performances all week, stunning his more illustrious opponents, including Timo Boll, Ahmed Saleh, Chuang Chih-Yuan, Patrick Franziska, Lim Jonghoon and Quadri Aruna. On the women’s part, world No 4 Wang Manyu beat compatriot and world No 2 Sun Yingsha 4-2 (1113, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6, 11-8, 17-15) in a nail-biting match. Sun seized the early initiative by winning the first game 13-11, taking control
of the opening contest with her compact strokes, speed and aggression. Wang has however leveled the score 1-1 after winning the second game 11-7. The advantage swung back to Sun who takes a 2-1 lead after winning the third game 11-6. Then, the match was evenly poised at 2-2 with Wang dominating and winning the fourth game 11-6. Wang led 3-2 after winning the fifth game 11-8. After saving six game points in the sixth game, Wang finally took down Sun 17-15 in the compelling spectacle. Earlier in the day, Wang and Sun combined to retain the women’s doubles
title with a straight-game victory over Japanese combination Mima Ito/Hina Hayata 3-0 (11-9, 11-7, 118). Novak Djokovic and his father Srdjan.
MELBOURNE, NOV 30 (IANS): World No. 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic “probably won’t” play the Australian Open beginning January 17 next year as his father Srdjan feels the tournament organisers’ decision to not allow unvaccinated players -- or players who don’t share their Covid-19 vaccination status -- amounts to “blackmail”. Djokovic is keeping the Australian Open organisers and his fans guessing about his Covid-19 vaccination status, adding to the uncertainty over whether he will compete at next year’s
opening major. The Australian Open director Craig Tiley has categorically stated that only fully vaccinated players will be allowed to compete in the tournament. Djokovic, the nine-time and defending Australian Open champion, has refused to divulge his vaccination status, or whether he intends to get vaccinated before the event. Recently, Tiley had said that, “He (Djokovic) has not shared his status with anyone.” In an interview with Serbian television programme TV Prva, which was later reported in English
by B92, Srdjan Djokovic said that Djokovic’s participation in the opening major of 2022 will “depends on how they (organisers) position themselves”. “He would want it with all his heart because he’s an athlete, and we would love that too,” Srdjan said of Novak’s appearance in Melbourne. “Under these blackmails and conditions, he probably won’t. I wouldn’t do that. And he’s my son, so you decide for yourself.” Srdjan said even he did not know about Novak’s vaccination status, adding that he respected his son’s privacy. “As far as vaccines and non-vaccines are concerned, it is the personal right of each of us whether we will be vaccinated or not,” he said. “Everyone has the right to decide on their health. Whether he is vaccinated or not, that is his exclusive right. Will he publish it, I don’t think so. I don’t know that decision either, and if I did, I wouldn’t share it with you. He has the right to decide as he wants.”
