the leadership matter. “Any out of turn remarks made from here onwards will be treated as indiscipline and action taken accordingly.”

Siddaramaiah is considered the front-runner while Shivakumar has dug his heels for the top post claiming that the assembly elections were won under his presidentship and that he has worked hard for ensuring this victory.

A section of the top Congress leadership feels Siddaramaiah’s popularity among several sections in-

cluding the poor, OBCs and minorities can get votes for the party in the Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing the media outside Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s 10 Rajaji Marg residence, Surjewala said the party chief has been authorised to appoint the leader of the legislature party and that is why deliberations are underway.

“It (the decision to name the CM) is a matter of today and tomorrow and we will have a leader of the legislature party. Within

DIMAPUR, MAY 17 (NPN): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall activity with lightning and gusty winds over Northeast region during next five days.

According to IMD, this was a result of the incursion of moisture in the atmosphere due to strong low-level Southerly/ Southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast. In this regard, IMD has issued yellow alert in the Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from May 17 to 21 and yellow alert in Arunachal from May 20 to 21. NEW DELHI, MAY 17

OKM demands revocation of teachers’ transfer order

DIMAPUR, MAY 17

(NPN): Ongpangkong Students’ Conference (OKM) has demanded revocation of government order transferring teachers on attachment basis from Fazl Ali College (FAC) and Mokokchung College of Teacher Education (MCTE).

In a press release, OKM Limatongzuk Jamir and general secretary Sungkumjang Kichu expressed deep concern over the transfer of teachers, which they said would create acute shortage of manpower in the affected colleges. Stating that FAC and MCTE

were “premier government colleges” in the district, the union said that majority of the students in the district availed their education from those two institutions. OKM said transferring out teachers would “definitely disturb the well set higher education ecosystem in the district.”

The union affirmed that it would “leave no stone unturned” in its demand to revoke the transfer order of the teachers. OKM has, therefore, requested the responsible department to revocation the order immediately.

primary healthcare medical officers on standard treatment work flow for NCDs initiated to realise healthcare services closer to the community.

the Amrit Kaal. Towards this goal, India is making efforts to achieve results in social indicators like life expectancy, maternal mortality rate, and NCDs at par with developed nations,’’ he stressed.

The outcome budget document of Union Budget 2023-2024 has for the first time introduced hypertension and diabetes treatment as output indicators, reflecting the government’s commitment to scale-up hypertension and diabetes coverage services.

SC asks Manipur govt to file status report on security measures taken

NEW DELHI, MAY

17

(PTI): Supreme Court on Wednesday directed Manipur government to take steps to foster confidence and ensure peace and tranquillity in the state torn by ethnic violence, asserting being the top-most court it can ensure that the political executive exercises its power and does not turn “a blind eye” to the situation.

Taking note of submissions on alleged provocative statements by Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh, SC asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to advise the constitutional functionary restraint. “Please advise the constitutional authority to make statements with a sense of responsibility,” said the bench of Chief Justice D Y Chanrachud and justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala. The bench made clear it will not deal with legal issues arising out of the

Manipur High Court’s decision on grant of reservation to majority Meiteis as the pleas challenging the order were pending with the larger division bench there.

“Law and order is the state subject and we as the apex court can ensure that the powers, which are entrusted to the authorities, are exercised by them and they don’t turn a blind eye.

“How to intervene and the manner in which the intervention has to be arrived at are the matters for the political arm of the executive and we must also as the court be conscious of the fact that certain matters are entrusted to the political arm of the executive. We are here to ensure that there is no inaction by them,” the bench said.

SC took into account the safety concerns of Kuki and other tribal communities in the state and the plea seeking appropriate directions so

that necessary steps can be taken for enhancing security measures in sensitive areas.

“The competent authorities shall immediately attend to the grievances after due verification and take such appropriate measures as are required to foster confidence and ensure peace and tranquillity,” it ordered. At the outset of the hearing, the bench expressed the view that the single judge order of Manipur High Court was “obnoxious” and it will set that aside.

Later, SC said tribals including Kukis can join the proceedings before the division bench of the high court hearing intra-court appeals challenging the quota order of the single judge bench. The appeal has been entertained by a division bench of the high court on May 15, and while issuing notice, the plea has been directed to be listed on June 6, it said.

Consumers buy chickens in Assam after PUD ban

DIMAPUR, MAY 17

(NPN): Hordes of people from Dimapur have started to visit nearby Lahorijan(Karbi Anglong) to buy chickens etc after Poultry Union Dimapur (PUD) called for a ban under its jurisdiction from May 17.

Indian economy expected to grow 6.7% in 2024

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): Supported by resilient domestic demand, Indian economy will remain a bright spot with an expected 6.7% growth in the calendar year 2024, according to a UN report which said higher interest rates and weaker external demand will continue to weigh on investment and exports this year for the country.

India’s economy, the largest in South Asian region, is expected to expand by 5.8% in 2023 and 6.7% in 2024 (calendar year basis), supported by resilient domestic demand, said the World Economic Situation and Prospects as of mid-2023

released on Tuesday. However, higher interest rates and weaker external demand will continue to weigh on investment and exports in 2023, it said. Inflation in India is expected to decelerate to 5.5% in 2023 as global commodity prices moderate and slower currency depreciation reduces imported inflation. Estimates for India’s economic growth in the midyear assessment remained unchanged from the projections made in World Economic Situation and Prospects 2023 report launched in January this year. The flagship report issued in January said that India’s GDP is projected to moder-

ate to 5.8% in 2023 as higher interest rates and global economic slowdown weigh on investment and exports.

Chief of the Global Economic Monitoring Branch, Economic Analysis and Policy Division, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Hamid Rashid had said at a press conference that India is a bright spot in the world economy. In response to a question by PTI on the trajectory of Indian economy, Rashid said India remains a bright spot. Our projection for India hasn’t changed since January and we see many positives, including the inflation has come down significantly.

UN predicts warmest ever period between 2023-2027

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): The United Nations has said 2023-2027 could be the warmest fiveyear period ever recorded, NDTV reported on Wednesday. According to the report, the United Nations warned as greenhouse gases and El Nino combine to send temperatures soaring.

“Global temperatures are soon set to exceed the more ambitious target set out in the Paris climate accords, with a two-thirds chance that one of the next five years will do so,” the UN’s World Meteorological Organization was quoted as having said. It said the hottest eight years ever recorded were all

between 2015 and 2022—but temperatures are forecast to increase further as climate change accelerates.

“There is a 98% likelihood that at least one of the next five years, and the fiveyear period as a whole, will be the warmest on record,” the WMO said as per the report. It said the 2015 Paris

Agreement saw countries agree to cap global warming at “well below” two degrees Celsius above average levels measured between 1850 and 1900 -- and 1.5°C if possible.

It added: “The global mean temperature in 2022 was 1.15°C above the 18501900 average”. The WMO said there was a 66% chance

that annual global surface temperatures will exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for at least one of the years 2023-2027, with a range of 1.1°C to 1.8°C forecasted for each of those five years, the report mentioned.

“While this does not mean that the world will permanently exceed the Paris benchmark, WMO is sounding the alarm that we will breach the 1.5°C level on a temporary basis with increasing frequency, said the agency’s chief Petteri Taalas,” the report said.

“A warming El Nino is expected to develop in the coming months and this will combine with human-

induced climate change to push global temperatures into uncharted territory,” it added.

“This will have farreaching repercussions for health, food security, water management and the environment. We need to be prepared,” it said.

El Nino is the largescale warming of surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, it mentioned.

“The weather phenomenon normally occurs every two to seven years. Conditions oscillate between El Nino and its opposite La Nina, with neutral conditions in between,” it stated.

that in Assam, price of live chicken was currently Rs 180-190 per kg while dressed chicken was Rs 300 per kg. On the other hand, the price fixed by DMC was Rs 160 per kg for live broiler and Rs 250 per kg for dressed broiler.

The non-availabili -

ty of poultry has caused hardship for those running restaurants, hotels and hostels. One poultry buyer requested DMC to conduct proper market research before fixing prices of such commodities.

Reconsider transfer of Ph.D supervisor: RSF(KSCJ)

DIMAPUR, MAY 17

(NPN): Research Scholars’ Forum of Kohima Science College (A), Jotsoma has expressed disappointment over the transfer of the dean of sciences and Ph.D supervisor to New Model College, Wakching, Mon and appealed to the responsible authority to reconsider the transfer order.

In a statement, the forum said that some scholars were currently working under the supervisor. Stating that the scholars were “solely dependent” on the supervisor, the forum questioned the policy and “actual inten-

tion” behind the transfer. It also questioned whether the authority took into consideration about the scholars and their future endeavours. Asserting that the supervisor was the only expert in the field of Freshwater Ecology and Fish Biology in the institute, the forum expressed apprehension that his absence would create a major hindrance in their research activities. It, therefore, appealed to the authority to reconsider the transfer in the interest of the RSF in particular and the students of Kohima Science College and Nagas in general.

Adinno calls for upholding 1951 plebiscite

DIMAPU R: NNC president

Adinno Phizo has called for upholding the plebiscite of 1951 even more strongly with an indomitable spirit of patriotism that Nagas did not lack.

In a message on the occasion of 72nd anniversary of the Naga Plebiscite of 1951 on Tuesday, she declared that the plebiscite was not a mere expression of what the Nagas wanted, but a sacrosanct covenant of what the Nagas were, are and would continue to be, that Nagaland was a sovereign nation.

She cautioned that if India in particular and the world in general today could not see the truth and took it for what it was, then the rights of all sovereign nations would be at peril from the likes of bullying larger nations like India.

“We cannot afford to shy away even if we have to face a narcissistic juggernaut with all its perplexities. In situations and circumstances like these where we may have to stand alone for our sovereign nation that we hold dear,” she asserted.

In spite of the plebiscite and historic legitimacy of Nagaland, Adinno accused India of choosing to invade Nagaland and the Indo-Naga war ensued.

She said that many Nagas had died in this defensive war against a mighty aggressor, “professing to be the world’s largest democracy”. To this day, she mentioned that it was baffling to think that India, the largest democracy, would do such a thing that was completely antithetical to the democracy the professed.

Zeliangrong body refutes Kuki MLAs’ claim

Correspondent

IMPHAL, MAY 17: All Zeliangrong Organization (AZO) Manipur Valley on Wednesday refuted the claim by 10 Kuki MLAs in a recent memorandum to Union home minister Amit Shah, that “there are no tribals left in the Imphal valley”.

The 10 Kuki MLAs, seven of whom are ruling BJP who recently demanded separate administration for the Kuki, in their letter to Union home minister Amit Shah, alleged that “Manipur is now partitioned, is the ground reality” after the May 3 ethnic violence and “there are no tribals left in the Imphal valley”.

The MLAs further claimed that there were no (non-tribals) people

belonging to the Meitei community left in the hills while alleging that Manipur government and its police machinery were communalized and used in the pogrom against the Kuki tribalsin letter.

Talking to media, AZO Manipur Valley president Meibon Phaomei strongly refuted the claim while asserting that it was a totally wrong propaganda.

Tribal people living in the valley areas since time immemorial are still living in harmony with other communities, including the Meiteis.

“We the tribals who have been settling in Imphal valley since time immemorial are living peacefully in harmony without any problem,” he said.

The AZO president said that he was confused

as to what type of tribal they (the 10 MLAs) mentioned in the memorandum. There was no categorization or type of tribals in the Indian Constitution. But, in the memorandum, the 10 MLAs stated about having two categories or types of tribal.

“We are confused as to which type of tribal they (10 Kuki MLAs) are referring to in the memorandum. Their statement

Internet shutdown hits media in Manipur

Correspondent

IMPHAL, MAY 17: Journalist bodies in Manipur on Wednesday highlighted problems being faced by the print and electronic media houses in a memorandum submitted to the state IPR minister Dr Sapam Ranjan

Singh.

While the media houses, both print and electronic media, may cease publication or broadcasting of news over non availability of newsprint and printing materials and also due to the shutting down of internet service, the memorandum also aired the grievances being faced by the correspondents working for outside media houses.

Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) and All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) submitted the memorandum to the chief minister through the IPR minister Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh today evening.

While submitting the memorandum, representatives of the journalists’ body told the IPR minister that due to non-availability of news prints and other printing material the print media in the state were unable to render its service to the people during this crisis time.

They further aired the problems being faced by the

electronic media due to the prolonged shutting down of the internet services.

They said they were unable to update the software for broadcasting of the various channels.

Mention may be made that almost all print media houses in the state are running out of newsprint. Besides, almost all newspapers are reducing their pages currently.

After a patient hearing, the IPR minister assured to discuss the matter with the chief minister and try his best to resolve the problems.

The representatives of the EGM and AMWJU also met with the security advisor to the chief minister Kuldeip Singh and conveyed the message to him.

The advisor told the journalists’ body that the matter will be put up with the concerned authorities of the government.

He said that as the situation was tense in Kangpokpi district, the

government was arranging alternative routes through the Imphal-Jiribam route (NH-37).

The journalists’ team also met the commissioner (home) of the state government and apprised him of the problem being faced by the journalists of the state.

He assured the journalist team that the matter for internet connection will be discussed.

To mention here, after shutting down internet services , the state government made a special arrangement for media houses and journalists to access internet service at the DIPR.

However, the internet service at the DIPR did not work on Tuesday and the day before, making the media houses unable to access the internet.

Imphal based correspondents were also unable to file their daily reports. However, the internet service at DIPR resumed on Wednesday evening.

appeared that there are two different types of tribals,” he said.

The present conflict was between two ethnic communities and not between the tribal and the Meitei community. “Are they (the 10 MLAs) trying to present the conflict as between the tribals and Meitei,” he asked. He observed that the present issue in the fore of the state was not between tribal and non-tribal communities.

Zelianggrong communities, mainly Kabui and Rongmei, are settled in the Imphal valley of Manipur and they are also scheduled tribes.

If the Kuki MLAs claim that there are no tribals in the Imphal valley, it will create a great problem in future as it will go on the

SHILLONG, MAY 17

(PTI): Meghalaya, which is reeling under a power crisis for the past few days, may have to suffer more in the coming days as the water level at a key dam used in producing hydel electricity is at its lowest, Power Minister A T Mondal said.

The power generation may have to be shut down if the water level at Umiam Lake goes down by another foot, he said.

“The water level as of today is 3,165 feet. This is the lowest in the history of the lake. The lowest water level recorded was 3,170 feet a few years ago,” Mondal told PTI on Tuesday.

wrong side, he observed.

“Do say only the truth. There is a saying that truth always triumphs. We are not happy with the wrong statement,” the AZO Manipur Valley president said.

Meibon Phaomei further observed that a separate state or autonomy was usually demanded by a community having their own distinct land.

“A community having its own land usually raises the demand for a separate administration or autonomy. But, a community having no land of its own should not raise such a demand as it will be hard to achieve the goal,” he said.

The AZO Manipur Valley president, then, appealed to the Manipur government to work on strategies to restore peace in the state.

AR provides security to trucks carrying essentials supply in Manipur

IMPHAL, MAY 17 (IANS):

Amidst the crisis of essentials, medicines, and transport fuel in violence-hit Manipur, the Assam Rifles is providing security to the stranded goods trucks to enter the state and to go to various districts to ensure that people get uninterrupted supply of all important items.

In view of the ethnic violence and unprecedented clashes between the tribal Kukis and non-tribals Meiteis in Manipur since May 3, hundreds of goods trucks, various other vehicles, and oil tankers have been stranded on the National Highways and major highways to the state, causing a serious crisis of essentials, medicines, transport fuel and cooking gas. An official of Manipur Home Department on Wednesday

said that the Assam Rifles, in close coordination with the civil administration and state police of both Manipur and Assam, is providing security to the goods trucks.

The Assam Rifles officials assured the truck drivers to provide security as they feel seriously insecure to ply their vehicles in the strife-torn Manipur, which along with other northeastern states are heavily dependent on various states of the country in getting regular supply of essentials items, medicines and transport fuel.

The Assam Rifles officials, involving civil society and community leaders, also held peace talks regularly between Meiteis and Kukis in various districts. The paramilitary force also continues to render help to the affected people and arranges collec-

of Shillong. The maximum water level of the reservoir is 3,210 feet (978.41 metres).

A senior power department official said only 88 million units are available now in the state against a demand of 200 million units.

Another 35 million units from the Kopili stage I project are also not available due to a technical snag in the generation unit, and power supplies from two other plants in the state, have also been shut down due to low water levels, he said.

tion of LPG cylinders and other basic necessities.

Meanwhile, Manipur government’s Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh on Wednesday said that the situation in the state has improved a lot. “There are no incidents and the state government including security forces are putting in all efforts to check unfounded rumours,” he told the media.

He said that a toll free number for ‘Rumour Free Manipur’ has been introduced to enable the general public to check facts.

In view of the closure of Imphal-Dimapur National Highway, trucks ferrying essential commodities are coming through ImphalSilchar National Highway, he said, adding that around 94 trucks from Jiribam side were brought with the security escort to Imphal.

ing down continuously, the minister said, heavy rainfall is required to increase it and thus save the people from power cuts in the days to come.

The Meghalaya High Court recently slammed the state government for its inability to take measures to address the power crisis.

Any hydel power project needs a minimum water level for generating electricity. The minimum level of water required for power

generation at Umiam is 3,164 feet. Built in the early 1960s, the Umiam reservoir is located about 10 km north

Assam proactive to prevent crime against children: NCPCR

GUWAHATI, MAY 17

(PTI): The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on Wednesday said Assam was pro-actively working towards eliminating crime against children.

Addressing a press conference here, NCPCR member Divya Gupta said crimes by juveniles in Assam were also “very less” compared to some other states.

“The Assam government is very proactive in preventing crimes against children. It is taking serious actions against criminals of child abuse,” she said.

Without sharing data, Gupta claimed that crimes

against children were going down in the state. Talking about minors involved in crimes, she said that Assam is a “good state” with very few juvenile criminals lodged in correctional homes. “I visited one such home, which houses juveniles from 13 districts. The total number of children staying there is only 50,” Gupta said.

Referring to the two children allegedly abused physically and sexually by a doctor couple, the NCPCR member said she met them and they were recovering. “They are in a safe place and utmost care is being taken for their recovery.

MNF claims majority in CDAC after BJP, Cong members join

AIZAWL, MAY 17 (PTI):

The Mizo National Front (MNF) on Wednesday claimed to have secured majority in Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district after a total of five members from the BJP and Congress joined the ruling party of the state.

In the 20-member CADC, the magic number to form the board is 11 and the MNF’strength has now gone up to 15 following defection of three BJP members and two Congress members.

MNF Legislative Party leader Rasik Mohan Chak-

ma said, “The party staked claim to form the board in CADC before attaining the magic figure as it was the single largest party with 10 members.”

The May 9 elections to the CADC threw up a hung House as no party was able to secure the magic figure of 11. While the MNF won 10 out of 19 seats where elections were conducted, the BJP won five and the Congress four.

Chakma said three of the five elected BJP candidates defected to the MNF last week while two Congress members joined the party on Tuesday.

I cannot tell the kind of physical and sexual torture meted out to those two kids. There are injuries and burn marks on their private parts. Even animals do not behave like this,” she said.

Last month, the doctor couple was arrested in Guwahati for allegedly as-

saulting the two children whom they claimed to have adopted.

In total, three children -- a boy and a girl aged around three and another boy of about 11 years -- were rescued from their residence. The girl and the younger boy were allegedly assaulted.

PATNA, MAY 17 (PTI):

Political strategist-turnedactivist Prashant Kishor Wednesday cautioned the Congress against “mistaking” the victory in Karnataka assembly polls as a precursor to its performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

His statement shared by ‘Jan Suraaj’, a political campaign launched by the IPAC founder in his home state of Bihar, pointed out that despite the Congress winning the 2013 Karnataka elections it had gone on to lose to the BJP in 2014 Parliamentary elections as also that the grand old party had lost the 2019 Lok Sabha elections after winning in three major states a year before.

“I congratulate the Congress upon its success in Karnataka. But I would also like to caution leaders and workers of the party against mistaking the assembly poll outcome for a hint of what lies in store in Lok Sabha polls,” said Kishor, who stopped his statewide pada-yatra two days ago after a muscle tear in his leg. He has been convalescing at an undisclosed location since then.

Kishor, perceived to be ideologically agnostic and hence suspected by political players of all hues to be an “agent” of the rival, reeled out statistics to buttress his point on

Adani scam: SC grants SEBI time till Aug 14

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) time till August 14 to complete its probe into the allegations of stock price manipulation by the Adani group and asked the market regulator to place on record an updated status report of the probe.

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud also directed that copies of the report submitted before it by the apex courtappointed Justice (retd) A M Sapre expert committee be made available to the parties to enable them to assist it in further deliberations in the matter.

When Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for SEBI, requested the top court to consider extending the deadline till September end, the bench said, “We are not granting an indefinite extension of time. If there is some genuine difficulty, you let us know.”

The bench, also comprising Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala, was hearing the pleas filed

on the Adani-Hindenburg row. It was also considering the SEBI’s application seeking extension of time by six months to complete the probe into allegations of stock price manipulation by the Adani group.

“SEBI is granted an extension of time till August 14, 2023 to submit its report,” the bench said, adding, “SEBI shall place on record an updated status report with regard to the course of investigation.”

The remit of the Justice Sapre panel was to provide an overall assessment of the situation, including the relevant causal factors which have led to volatility in the securities market in the recent past.

The panel was asked to suggest measures to “(i) strengthen the statutory and/or regulatory framework; and (ii) secure compliance with the existing framework for the protection of investors”, the court had earlier said. At the outset on Wednesday, the CJI observed, “The committee has submitted its report. It is a tentative report and now SEBI has asked for an extension of time to complete their investigation.” Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for one of the petitioners, referred to a reply given by the minister of state for finance in Parliament in July 2021 about SEBI investigating some

2 Ex-Ministers blame Siddaramaiah for collapse of JD(S)-Cong govt in 2019

BENGALURU, MAY 17 (PTI): Two Ministers in the outgoing BJP government on Wednesday sought to blame senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah for the defection of a group of his party’s MLAs that led to the collapse of the H D Kumaraswamy-led coalition government in 2019 after being in power for 14 months.

K Sudhakar and S T Somashekar, who were Health and Cooperation Ministers respectively in the Basavaraj Bommai government, raised the issue at a time when Siddaramaiah is in a stiff competition with state Congress president D K Shivakumar to become the Chief Minister, after the Congress won the Assembly polls by securing 135 seats. Sudhakar and Somashekar were earlier with the Congress. They were among the 17 CongressJD(S) legislators who quit and defected to BJP that led to the collapse of the coalition government and paved the way for BJP to

come to power. “During the JDS-Congress coalition govt in 2018, whenever MLAs (Congress) went to the then Coordination Committee Chairman Siddaramaiah with their concerns, he used to express his helplessness and say that he has no say in the govt and his constituency/district works itself are stalled,” Sudhakar claimed.

Further, Siddaramaiah used to assure MLAs to wait till 2019 Lok Sabha polls and come what may he won’t allow the then coalition government to continue even for a single day after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Ultimately, some MLAs including him had

to inevitably quit Congress and go back to the people in bypolls, to protect the ‘karyakartas’ and supporters in their constituencies, he said, and asked “Can Shri Siddaramaiah deny the fact that he had no role, implicitly or explicitly, in this move by Congress MLAs?”

Somashekar said, despite being the Chairman of the Coordination Committee Siddaramaiah always expressed his helplessness to address the concerns of MLAs during the CongressJDS coalition government.

“No one can deny the truth that this pushed some of us to quit the party and go for bypolls,” he said.

Adani group companies with regard to compliance with SEBI regulations.

“What I am saying is they (SEBI) have to put on record as to what has happened to these investigations which they have been doing since at least 2016 ... They have to put this on record what has happened to those because otherwise what is happening is, that there is clearly, I mean one can see that so clearly, somehow an attempt to shield the Adani companies in recent years,” Bhushan said.

He argued in recent times, despite many complaints having been made to SEBI over the last six-seven years, it appeared that they are doing “absolutely nothing despite it being written on the wall”.

“You pick up something in 2016, something in 2020 and connect them with the present issue which is arising from the Hindenburg report,” Mehta said while responding to Bhushan.

“I want to just clear the air. 2016 is something totally different, distinct and completely separate. My friend

Cong slams govt over fall in LIC’s market capitalisation

now wants that whatever investigations or proceedings were taken against a particular company till now should be placed on record.

I don’t think that is the remit but I have no difficulty,” the top law officer said.

He said the minister of state for finance in his reply to Parliament on July 19, 2021 had confirmed that SEBI is investigating some Adani group companies with regard to compliance with regulations.

“It may be noted that the investigation referred to was in respect of possible non-compliance with Minimum Public Shareholding (MPS) norms, and consequential violations. This investigation had commenced in October 2020. It is hereby confirmed that the investigation referred to by the minister had not commenced in 2016,” Mehta said. He said SEBI has made a statement to the apex court that it is examining or investigating the allegations made in the Hindenburg report and one of these allegations was related to non-compliance with MPS norms.

Centre to boost communication ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha polls

NEW DELHI, MAY 17

(PTI): Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the government on Wednesday held a day-long brainstorming session on improving its public outreach, particularly to those who do not have access to television and newspapers.

Information and

Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur, addressing over 100 communication officers of the government, stressed on the importance of reaching out to all sections of the society, particularly the underprivileged.

He said a large part of India lives in a media shadow, bereft of facilities of television and newspapers, and it was the responsibility of the Indian Information Service (IIS) officers to reach out to that section of society.

He said the IIS is a vital part of the government and the Chintan Shivir provided the officials a unique opportunity to collaborate, self-introspect and timely course correct the work in the ministry.

NIA, Punjab, Haryana Police conduct raids at 324 locations

NEW DELHI, MAY 17

Congress’ prospects in Lok Sabha polls.

“It may be recalled that in 2012 the Samajwadi Party came to power in Uttar Pradesh with a clear majority. Two years later in the Lok Sabha poll BJP-led NDA swept the state, bagging 73 out of the 80 seats”, he pointed out.

He also recounted the 2013 Karnataka assembly poll when the Congress won a majority but lost out to BJP miserably in the Lok Sabha polls.

“The Congress would also do well to remember its success in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh in the 2018 assembly polls, which was followed by its miserable performance in these states just a few months later in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls,” Kishor said.

The 45-year-old political analyst has handled poll campaigns of leaders as diverse as Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar, Arvind Kejriwal, M K Stalin and Jaganmohan Reddy.

(IANS): The National Investigation Agency (NIA), in coordination with Punjab Police and Haryana Police, on Wednesday conducted raids at 324 locations across several states in connection with the terrorist-gangsterdrug smugglers nexus case, and seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition, besides other incriminating materials.

An NIA official said that the raids were conducted as part of ‘Operation Dhvast’ in eight states; Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chandigarh and Madhya Pradesh. The official said that several suspects were detained and questioned during the raids.

“The day-long searches were aimed at breaking the terror nexus of Arsh Dalla, a designated terrorist, apart from dreaded gangsters such as Lawrence Bishnoi, Chhenu Pehalwan, Deepak Teetar, Bhupi Rana, Vikash Lagarpuriya, Ashish Choudhary, Gurpreet Sekhon, Dilpreet Baba, Harsimrat Simma, Anuradha,” said the official.

The NIA said that the focus of Wednesday’s raids was on weapon suppliers, financiers, logistic providers and hawala operators associated with the hardcore

gangs working with drug smugglers and terrorists based out of other countries like Pakistan and Canada.

“The raiding parties seized 1 Pistol, assorted ammunition (both live and used cartridges), in addition to 60 mobile phones, five DVRs, twenty SIM cards, one hard disk, one pen drive, one dongle, one WiFi router, a digital watch, two memory cards, 75 documents and Rs 39,60,000 in cash,” the official said.

These were the sixth in the series of such crackdowns launched by the NIA following the registration of three cases since August 2022 of conspiracies related to targeted killings, terror funding of pro-Khalistan outfits, extortion.

Notable among these cases are the sensational killing of Maharashtra builder Sanjay Biyani and international Kabaddi player Sandeep Nangal Ambia in Punjab last year.

The NIA investigations have revealed that the conspiracies were being hatched in jails of different states and were being executed by an organised network of operatives based abroad. The spotlight on these gangs became sharper after reports of several prisons becoming havens of the deadly nexus and hubs of gang wars, which recently resulted in violence and

murder inside Goindwal Jail and Tihar Jail.

The NIA has further found that many criminals, who were leading the gangsters in India, had fled to countries like Pakistan, Canada, Malaysia and Australia, from where they were engaged in planning serious crimes in association with criminals lodged in jails across India. These groups were carrying out targeted killings and raising funds for their nefarious activities through smuggling of drugs and weapons, hawala and extortion.

Some of the locations where raids were conducted today included: Abohar, Moga, Fazilka , Ludhiana, Mohali, Ferozpur, Tarn Taran, Ludhiana , Faridkot, Roopnagar, Nawashahar, Ferozpur, Amritsar, Patiala, Bernala and Jalandhar districts of Punjab; Gurugram, Yamuna Nagar, Ambala, Rohtak, Sirsa, Kurukshetra and Jhajjar districts of Haryana; Sri Ganga Nagar, Churu, Bikaner and Jaipur districts of Rajasthan; Baghpat, Meerut and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh; Bhind and Barwani districts of Madhya Pradesh; besides Delhi-NCR.

The NIA had previously conducted searches at 231 locations and seized 38 arms, including 4 lethal weapons, along with 1129 rounds of ammunition.

NEW DELHI, MAY 17

(PTI): As the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) marked one year since listing its shares on the stock exchanges, the Congress on Wednesday attacked the Modi government over the fall in the firm’s market capitalisation.

The country’s largest insurer LIC had this day last year listed its shares on the NSE and the BSE and Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh sought to link the decline in the market cap of the firm to the investment in Adani companies, a charge rejected by the BJP which accused him of misleading people with “half information”.

In a tweet, Ramesh said, “Exactly a year ago today, LIC was listed in the stock market. Its market capitalisation then stood at Rs 5.48 lakh crore. Today, this is down to Rs 3.59 lakh crore a fall of a whopping 35%!” “There is only one reason for this steep fall Modani. In the process, lakhs and lakhs of policyholders have taken a serious

hit,” he said and tagged a screenshot of a media report which claimed that LIC share has wiped out Rs 1.9 lakh crore since listing.

The BJP hit back at Ramesh with the saffron party’s IT department head Amit Malviya saying that the LIC’s exposure in Adani Group is less than 1 per cent.

“LIC has bagged multicrore profit on Adani stocks. There is no risk to policyholders says LIC Chief.

“Jairam Ramesh, who is known for leaking privileged correspondence to media, to embarrass then PM Manmohan Singh, in whose cabinet he was a minister, is once again misleading people by peddling half information…,” Malviya said on Twitter and shared a media report that quoted the LIC chief.

The Congress has been attacking the government over the fall in the value of LIC’s holdings in the Adani Group and had asked who “forced” this pillar of India’s financial system to take such a risky exposure to the conglomerate.

PM Modi to go ahead with Australia visit

Thakur also noted that the media landscape and the way people consume information was changing fast, and there was a need to adapt methods of information dissemination to meet the needs of the 21st century. He asked the officers to work towards higher effectiveness through better utilisation of resources, coordination of efforts, sharing of information and working as a single team.

The minister said the clear priority for the target of communication for the government was oriented towards welfare of the underprivileged and the mantra of Antyodaya (reaching out to the last person) should guide the activities of the officers.

The officials held deliberations across five sessions, including participatory communication with citizens - Jan Bhagidari; adoption of emerging technologies in public communications to maximise reach; institutionalisation of quick response mechanisms.

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s engagements in Australia next week will remain unchanged except the summit of the Quad leaders in Sydney, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced cancelling the Quad summit after US President Joe Biden postponed his visit to Australia to focus on crucial debt-ceiling talks in Washington.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday announced Modi’s three-nation tour beginning Friday that included his visit to Australia from May 22 to 24.

In the first leg of his trip, Modi will visit the Japanese city of Hiroshima from May 19 to 21 for the annual summit of the G7 advanced economies.

From Japan, Modi will travel to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea where he will host the third summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) on May 22 jointly with Prime Minister James Marape.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, MAY 18, 2023 NATIONAL 5

K’taka win no guarantee Cong will perform well in 2024: PK

Unparliamentary democracy

In parliamentary democracy, the party having majority elects or selects a leader who is then invited to form the government and seek vote of confidence in the assembly. It has been three days since May 14 when results were declared with Congress inflicting a stunning defeat to the incumbent BJP by 135 to 66 seats. The overwhelming majority won by the Congress also and left no space for the imaginative expectation of the JDS, with only 19 seats, in playing any role as ‘kingmaker’. Congress has achieved a truly magnificent victory against the all-powerful BJP, unquestionably the most potent political party in Indian history. Despite BJP having used everything within its awesome reach– money, material, media, thousands of committed cadres, central probe agencies and ultimately the two champion campaign veterans- prime minister Narendra Modi and union home minister Amit Shah- Congress managed to inflict a crushing defeat. In a way, the Karnataka election exposed the crucial chink in the BJP’s seemingly impenetrable armour- nationalising local state politics by turning is as a referendum for Modi; creating fear psychosis among minorities and warning that if other parties come to power, then it will invite unwanted situations. BJP president J.P.Nadda spent months campaigning in the state, while Modi and Shah addressed no less than 30 mega rallies each. On the other hand, Congress focussed on local leaders- former chief minister Siddaramaiah and state unit president D.K.Shivkumar; targeted the ruling BJP for blatant extortion of 40%, attempt to divide people along communal lines, reservation issue and also the Amul(Gujarat) versus Bandani(Karnataka) or local versus non-local product . After the Karnataka win, which most pollsters predicted a hung house, Congress confirmed it is the only viable national alternative to BJP. That may be plausible but not necessarily conclusive. After a magnificent show and raising hopes of a likely reversal change in 2024, the Congress unfortunately self-inflicted itself with an old habit of ensuring that its high command have the final say in deciding everything. This is the reason for the delay in choosing the next Congress chief minister in Karnataka. The delay has disappointed those who voted the party and they are made to wonder whether the party has the ability to get going when needed. The race for the chief minister’s chair is being fiercely fought between state Congress chief D.K.Shivkumar(DKS) and former chief minister Siddaramaiah(Sidda).

DKS is the engine that drove the party with an effective poll strategy, personally overseeing distribution of tickets to winnable candidates; campaigning on a non-stop daily basis and also putting in a lot of money for the party’s election campaign. These contributions should have left no doubt that DKS should have been awarded with the post of chief minister. However, despite his massive contributions and unlike former chief minister Siddaramaiah, DKS does not appear to enjoy the same mass appeal as the former. The delay in choosing the next leader is due to the old and undemocratic political culture, where everything should be decided by party high commands. It is the same even with BJP. The Congress has to shed off this culture and allow elected members of states to choose their own leaders.

Karnataka will have a chief minister but the delay is going to cost the Congress dear in the days to come as delay has only exposed its indecision.

His Ascension and Our Access

It came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. —Luke 24:51

We have no experiences in our lives that correspond to the events in our Lord’s life after the transfiguration.

From that moment forward His life was altogether substitutionary. Up to the time of the transfiguration, He had exhibited the normal, perfect life of a man. But from the transfiguration forward— Gethsemane, the Cross, the resurrection— everything is unfamiliar to us. His Cross is the door by which every member of the human race can enter into the life of God; by His resurrection He has the right to give eternal life to anyone, and by His ascension our Lord entered heaven, keeping the door open for humanity.

The transfiguration was completed on the Mount of Ascension. If Jesus had gone to heaven directly from the Mount of Transfiguration, He would have gone alone. He would have been nothing more to us than a glorious Figure. But He turned His back on the glory, and came down from the mountain to identify Himself with fallen humanity.

The ascension is the complete fulfillment of the transfiguration. Our Lord returned to His original glory, but not simply as the Son of God— He returned to His father as the Son of Man as well. There is now freedom of access for anyone straight to the very throne of God because of the ascension of the Son of Man. As the Son of Man, Jesus Christ deliberately limited His omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. But now they are His in absolute, full power. As the Son of Man, Jesus Christ now has all the power at the throne of God. From His ascension forward He is the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Do you want a ‘New Nagaland’ ? Free Your ‘YOUTH’ First

“The so-called education that goes on in the world prepares you only to earn bread. And Jesus says, “Man cannot live by bread alone.” And that’s what your universities have been doing — they prepare you to earn bread in a better way, in an easier way, in a more comfortable way, with less effort, with less hardship. But all that they do is prepare you to earn your bread and butter. It is a very, very primitive kind of education: it does not prepare you for life.”

~

GOD has not only honored me with an opportunity to serve in Nagaland but also gifted me a huge number of friends of all ages and genders who became my guides, mentors and teachers throughout my adventurous life in Nagaland. It is a well acknowledged fact that most of the mainland Indians do not understand the soul of the Nagas, let alone the mysteries of Nagaland. There are a lot of misunderstandings, misconceptions, confusions exist about the Nagas and Nagaland due to lack of communication, preconceived notions and geographical distance. When I decided to settle here after accepting the ‘offer’ from Prof P.S. Lorin’s Tetso College I realized the huge weight of responsibility that I was to shoulder. It was never about becoming just a teacher of students, but was all about becoming their Companion, Friend, Brother, Mentor and Guru. I was to deal with those students who were from diverse and extremely complicated backgrounds. Even though I have always had powerful support from our society and leaders, especially my uncles, aunties, Bros and Sisters, I knew that the challenges and battles that I was going to face was to be a lonely struggle. However, my students

became my companions, my comrades and my soldiers. The responses that I received in my classes introduced me to ‘metal’ and ‘fire’ of my students. The decision to contribute something ‘constructive’ to the society was taken.

I was made to realize that I was not surrounded by ordinary kids but men and women of substance who were determined to take initiatives to ‘construct’ the “New Nagaland’’ with whatever little efforts they could make. In no time my existence at my workplace turned into a ‘progressive movement’ which started with a formation of ‘CRITICAL THEORISTS SOCIETY’ which was formed on 2nd October, 2018 in a running Car on “Dimapur- Kohima highway”. Mosa Sangtam, Putionen Jamir, Keneisediu Mezhu, Ghukha Chophy, Panglem Konyak, Vemudozo Tetseo, Kuku Yepthomi, Hipito Arkha Achumi, Holonto Zhimomi, Hika Yepthomi became the initiators of the great ‘Dream’ which later on carried forward by many more.

What did ‘Critical Theorists Society’ do? It produced thoughts, ideas, theories, views, opinions and fearlessly disseminated them primarily through “Degree of Thought Column”- an initiative of Morung Express-Tetso College collaboration, of which I was Co-Editor and continued to be one till August, 2022. Members of Critical Theorists Society produced a good amount of literature in the past four years in the public interest and also participated in debate competitions as well as national and international academic conferences while contributing their ‘research’ regularly to various newspapers in Nagaland, Assam and Manipur. The seeds that members of Critical Theorists Society sown in the

‘cultivated’ soil of Naga society and Tetso College will give fruits in future. The work that “Critical Theorists Society” stubbornly started was further continued by Tetso Motorcycle Club and Tetso Mountaineering Club.

Critical Theorists Society was a large group of silent, dedicated scholars whereas TMC 1 and TMC 2 is a large group of ‘action oriented’ individuals who believe in taking bold initiatives to give new dimensions to the conscience of modern day Naga society.

Tetso Motorcycle Club (TMC 1) and Tetso Mountaineering Club (TMC 2) have been formed to help their members to connect with society and become an engine for its change and transformation that leads to active contribution to the Nation building process. TMC 1 and TMC 2, despite challenges, odds and critical barriers continued to serve the society by generating a positive force in the state of Nagaland to build the bridges of love, compassion, justice, unity and nationalism. “We climb mountains, swim the rivers and brave the dark jungles for the bright future of our people and our country, we are one nation, one people and we shall always remain one” Keakong T (Alex) former Commander-in-Chief of Tetso Mountaineering Club quotes with pride.

“We do not just ride, but we ride for a social cause and we look for opportunities to carry the message of hope, justice and unity, Tetso Motorcycle Club is not just any other regular Biker’s club, but a group of socially awakened students who are ever ready to serve anywhere in our country wherever and whenever we are required. Tetso Motorcycle Club is a social movement”.

Hype about resurgence of Rahul is on falsehood

Much hype has been created over the mandate in Karnataka. The media including in the western countries are trying to drive home a signal that the Congress has emerged as a key victorious and our BJP has been vanquished. Of course, the Congress has won a massive mandate in Karnataka but in no way this poll outcome signals anything for the BJP Karyakartas to feel demoralised. Reasons are many and I will try to highlight a few.

In 2022, we had won massive victories in states such as Uttar Pradesh. In the process we returned to power in the most populous state in north India that sends 80 lawmakers to Lok Sabha. The power of PM Narendra Modi and Uttar Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was almost magical. The BJP also retained power in neighboring Uttarakhand, known as the Devbhumi or land of Gods and also in critical state of Manipur in the northeast and Goa on the west coast -- with both states having sizable Christian population.

It is true the Congress party has still to grapple on how to take on Prime Minister Modi’s mass popularity and the electoral might of the BJP built up by thousands of Karyakartas like us under the guidance of Shri Modi ji and also Home Minister Amit Shah ji, BJP president J P Nadda ji and BJP general secretary (Organisation) Shri B L Santhosh ji.

The media should not forget that between 2020 and 2022, Rahul Gandhi and Congress party – also supported by Priyanka Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi has ended up on the losing side

often expresses these sentiments through her writings and speeches about Tetso Motorcycle Club. TMC 1 has been heavily involved in social initiatives. Right from tackling Covid 19 to voicing for the rights of people, exploring new lands & cultures, connecting people-contributing to national integration and through which a nation building process- TMC 1 has always been at the service of the people, service of the nation. Tetso Motorcycle Club has also been felicitated by Assam Rifles, also appreciated by many other government agencies and civil society organizations.

TMC 1 and TMC

2-both the clubs have a close association with the Assam Rifles/Indian Army because of the common bonding of Adventure, sense of belongingness to the nation and common zeal & ‘Josh’ to serve India in whatever little capacity that the members of the club can. The Assam Rifles bestowed a great honour upon Tetso Motorcycle Club by permitting and granting an opportunity to receive and escort the Army Riders from Army Medical Corps who visited Nagaland-as a part of their Expedition, to their destination at the Army Base in Rangapahar, Dimapur. It was a lifetime moment to witness TMC (Tetso Motorcycle Club) and AMC (Army Medical Corps) riding together “Wheelto-Wheel”-an ideal example of how civilians and the forces can join hands together to achieve common goals- the adventure, brotherhood, peace and glory. Moreover, a recently concluded Mt. Khelia Expedition wrote an altogether new chapter in the history of Nagaland. It happened for the first time in the history of Nagaland that a civilian Mountaineering Squad

(Tetso Mountaineering Club) climbed a relatively unknown, dangerous mountain located deep in the jungles of Indo-Burma Border with Mountaineers of Assam Rifles.

What does it all indicate? The hundreds of students who contributed and continue to contribute to the Nagaland and the nation through Critical Theorists Society (CTS), Tetso Motorcycle Club (TMC 1) and Tetso Mountaineering Club (TMC 2) have derived an immense pride through their actions which have created a far fetching impact on Nagaland and the nation. These initiatives were not ordinary. Through thoughts and actions, my Naga students single handedly built bridges of humanity, truth and unbreakable unity-which founders of our great nation have envisaged.

My Riders and Mountaineers are the carriers and messengers of the pain and suffering of ‘invisible’ people living in remotest regions of Nagaland. They tell the stories of ‘those’ strange lands, mysterious mountains and Naga people of the East, who are ‘unknown’ not only to the people from mainland India but also ‘unknown’ to the Nagas of “mainland Nagaland”.

My Scholars, Riders and Mountaineers are carriers of message- a message of change, message of justice, they are carriers of “THE GOOD NEWS”- the news about a possibility of new world, a possibility of better Nagaland, a new Nagalandwhere there will be no or lesser corruption, where there will be Rule of Law, where there will be no exploitation of poor-helpless Nagas by the rich, educated, resourceful Nagas, where there will be selfrespect, where community will not imprison/control the ‘Independent, Free

will’ of an individual, where justice-equalityliberty and fraternity will prevail, where schools and colleges will align their vision, mission and functioning approach with the needs of Naga students and society without getting influenced by profit motivated Western Business models or mainland Indian Business models in education sector.

Students of Nagaland want to write their own story. Let them write the way they want. They want to shout from the top of the Mountain that “WE TOO EXIST”- let them shout and let their ‘voice’ reach to the ear of each and every citizen of this country. We need schools, colleges and teachers who are visionary and courageous enough to trust their own ‘students’. We need not make similar mistakes in the name of ‘education’ which have been made elsewhere in the world. In Tetso College, I think I was never a teacher, but I have always been a student and my students have been my ‘Teachers’ who unconditionally help me, support me, educate me, motivate me and transform me.

How many Teachers, Schools and Colleges/ educational institutions are willing to freely allow themselves to be changed, transformed by their students?

My own experience in Nagaland taught me that the Naga students’ needs help. They need help to be free from the prisons of their own world. Only a free, courageous man can construct a free, new world. Only free schools, free colleges and free teachers/educators can construct a free man of tomorrow.

Do you want a “New Nagaland” ? Free Your ‘YOUTH’ First. Dr. Aniruddha Babar, Tetso College, Nagaland

Message of Adinno Phizo, President, NNC on

the 72nd anniv of Naga Plebiscite

in nine of the 10 state assembly elections.

The Congress was reduced to ruling just two states Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan and now it has added Karnataka. The marginalisation of Congress needs deeper studies but the media seemed to have decided to make a mountain out of mole hill. The law of the average also does better.

Look how.

Since May 2019 when Narendra Modi returned to power for the second time, the Karnataka poll outcome was only the second victory for Rahul Gandhi and the Congress. The first was Himachal Pradesh in December 2022. Even Congres leaders have admitted that in both Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka, the Congress victories were largely attributed to local factors. So where is the Rahul Gandhi angle?

On our part, we, the BJP, could win 15 assembly polls out of 25 since 2019 and in West Bengal, we have emerged now as the second largest party and chief competitor to incompetent Mamata Banerjee regime. Moreover, the Congress and communists in 2021 assembly polls in TMC-ruled state were reduced to zero. It was truly historic. In 2019 Lok Sabha polls, we won 18 from West Bengal and this time we may do much better to increase our overall national tally.

During these years, we are now a serious contestant in Telangana as well and here our competitor will be BRS and Congress may end up in the third position. We have similar story from Andhra Pradesh. In other words, the BJP’s

continued electoral successes since 2014 have led to the increased marginalization of the Congress, which ruled India for about six decades since its independence in 1947. Even the communists are now in much weaker wicket though the Leftists could retain Kerala in 2021 denying Congress the usual chance (in five years) to come back.

From statistics and theoretical views, the Congress was expected to wrest power from the BJP in Manipur, Goa and Uttarakhand but it failed in 2022. Earlier this year, Congress tally was not encouraging in Meghalaya and it scored zero for two consecutive polls in Nagaland.

Till over a year and half back, Congress was considered with some base and strengths in Punjab; but it failed miserably again and ended up losing power in Punjab to Aam Aadmi Party.

Also, there is no need to link Lok Sabha elections of 2024 to Karnataka won by Congress. In 2013, the Congress did very well in Karnataka polls and we could win only 40; but some months there was the Modi phenomenon and the rest is history.

The BJP Karyakartas have a high level of motivation and tireless zeal to work at the booth level.

With the regional parties like Samajwadi Party and BSP of Ms Mayawati ji left high and dry, the Congress is pretty weak to take on the BJP and our ‘new face’ Narendra Modi for the battle of 2024. The ‘New India’ is here and poor people are liking it.

On this auspicious Naga Plebiscite day, the 16” May in 1951, we the Nagas as one body, mind and spirit under the Naga National Council (NNC) led by then NNC President A.Z.Phizo unanimously expressed our self-determination to continue to live as a free and an independent nation. This Naga Plebiscite of 16’ May, 1951 was not an event that happened out of the whims and fancies of the Nagas but is backed by legitimate historical facts since ancient times.

Even during the British period, the Nagas had made their stand crystal clear in the 1929 Memorandum to the Simon Commission. Following this, we declared our independence on the 14th of August 1947. To reinforce, affirm and clear any doubts and aspersions of our Declaration of Independence the Naga National Council conducted a national Plebiscite on the 16th of May 1951 with observers from our neighboring country, India. This Plebiscite decided our destiny to continue to live as a free and sovereign nation with the result of 99.9%.

However, in spite of the Plebiscite and historic legitimacy of Nagaland, India chose to invade Nagaland and the IndoNaga war ensued. Many Nagas have died in this defensive war against a mighty aggressor, professing to be the world’s largest democracy. To this day it baffles one to think that India, the largest democracy, would do such a thing that is completely antithetical to the democracy she professes. This antithetical action of India upon Nagaland belittles the very principles of democracy; it is the rape of the right of sovereign nations. India has legitimate rights to claim Pakistan and Bangladesh

which were historically, racially and culturally part of India but does not do so as they have legitimately become nations by their own right. However, to claim Nagaland which never had any political, cultural, racial or historical relation with India as part of India is a shameful act and an insult to logic and reason. It is comparable to a narcissistic delusional man claiming that all the islands in the ocean belongs to him and then throwing a party in one of the islands by inviting his acquaintances despite the protest of the inhabitants of the island. This is what exactly happened as recent as a few weeks ago with a chapter of the G20 summit being held at Kohima in Nagaland. India continues to illegally occupy our beloved country and toys and tests our peaceable patience while making Nagaland her geopolitical playground.

Today, if India in particular, and the world in general, cannot see the truth and take it for what it is, then the rights of all sovereign nations are at peril from the likes of bullying larger nations like India. We cannot afford to shy away even if we have to face a narcissistic juggernaut with all its perplexities. In situations and circumstances like these where we may have to stand alone for our sovereign nation that we hold dear. The Plebiscite of 1951 must be upheld even more strongly with an indomitable spirit of patriotism which we Nagas do not lack. The Naga Plebiscite of 1951 is not a mere expression of what the Nagas want. It is the sacrosanct covenant of what the Nagas were and are and will continue to be, and that is —

NAGALAND: A SOVEREIGN NATION.

May God Bless Nagaland. Urra Uvie

At least eight fire engines, seven water tankers and several other fire fighting equipment were rushed to the spot and the blaze was doused by 8 am, he said.

Two persons, aged 19 and 30, suffered from injuries in the fire. They were admitted to the civicrun Bhabha Hospital in Bandra and their condition was stable, the official said.

The cause of the fire was not yet known, he added.

“A large number of old books and textbooks are being deposited in the RRR centre. We are thinking of opening libraries in slums and keeping these books there,” said Indore Municipal Corporation Commissioner Harshika Singh.

LG never appoints aldermen in his own right: SC ED ‘Elimination Dept’ to do away with opponents: Cong

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): Giving the lieutenant governor the power to nominate aldermen to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will mean he can destabilise an elected civic body, the Supreme Court observed on Wednesday and wondered whether these nominations were of so much concern to the Centre.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala made this observation while reserving its verdict on the plea of the Delhi government challenging the LG’s power to nominate aldermen. The MCD has 250 elected and 10 nominated members.

In December last year, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) defeated the BJP in the civic elections, winning 134 wards and ending the saffron party’s 15-year run at the helm of the MCD. The BJP won 104 seats and the Congress finished a distant third with nine.

“Is the nomination of 12 specialised people in

MCD of that much concern to the Centre? Actually, giving this power to the LG would effectively mean that he can destabilise the democratically elected Municipal Committees because they (aldermen) will have voting powers also,” the bench said. Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain, appearing for the LG’s office said in the context of Delhi, it is pertinent to note that the 69th amendment came and GNCTD Act was notified, which collectively contain mechanism for governance of Delhi.

The 69th Amendment Act of 1991 accorded a special status to the Union Territory of Delhi by designing it as the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

The bench told Jain his submission means that MCD is an institution of self-governance and that the role of LG here is distinct from the role of administrator when he acts on the aid and advice of the Council of Ministers under Article 239AA.

Re ferring to the Act, Jain said there are some powers which are entrusted to administrators and some others are given to the government.

Justice Narasimha asked Jain whether he means the power conferred upon the administrator is independent of the state and cannot be given to the state government.

Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for the Delhi government, said no separate powers have been accorded to the state government to nominate people to the MCD, and for the past 30 years, the practice of the LG nominating aldermen on the aid and advice of the city govern-

country after the Karnataka elections was discussed. Organisational matters of NCP were also part of the deliberations,’ he told reporters.

MUMBAI, MAY 17 (PTI):

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Wednesday discussed the overall political situation post the BJP debacle in Karnataka elections at a core committee meeting chaired by party president Sharad Pawar here. The organisational matters of NCP were also discussed, party chief spokesperson

Mahesh Tapase said.

“The core committee of the NCP met under the chairmanship of Sharad Pawar in Mumbai. Affairs of the party organisation were extensively discussed and deliberated to prepare the NCP cadre for local and general elections. “The political situation prevailing in Maharashtra and the

Hinduja Group chairman SP

Hinduja passes away at 87

Srichand Hinduja was lovingly referred to as “SP” by his coworkers and friends. SP served as the chairman of the Hinduja Group, the Hinduja Family, and other charity foundations.

Tapase said internal organisational elections of NCP will be declared soon by senior leaders Jaiprakash Dandegaonkar and Dilip Walse Patil who have been appointed as returning officers for Maharashtra and Mumbai regions, respectively. This was the first meeting of NCP leaders after the Karnataka verdict and assumes significance given that “Karnataka-like anti-incumbency prevails against the Shinde-Fadnavis government in Maharashtra”, he said.

ment has been followed.

“LG never appoints aldermen in his own right,” he said, adding the nominations are always made by the President but on the aid and advice of the Union government. Referring to the provisions, Singhvi said where a file is marked to the state government, it stops at its door, but where it is marked to the LG, he has to act on the aid and advice of the state government.

Jain interjected saying just because a practice has been followed for 30 years does not mean it is correct.

Singhvi submitted if Jain’s argument is accepted, then LG after LG was wrong in following this practice.

The bench said giving the LG the power to nominate aldermen will effectively mean that he can destabilise a democratically elected MCD because these aldermen get appointed to the standing committees and have voting power.

Jain, however, contended these nominated aldermen do not have much

power. Singhvi contested jain’s claim and said aldermen have been appointed in ward committees and they have voting power in such committees.

The bench then asked both Singhvi and Jain to file their written submissions in two days and said it will pass an order on the plea.

On Tuesday, the top court had asked about the “source of power” of the LG under the Constitution and the law to nominate aldermen to the MCD without the aid and advice of the elected government.

It was hearing a petition filed by the AAP government challenging the nomination of aldermen by the LG.

Jain has referred to the reply filed by the office of the LG and the constitutional scheme to assert the concept of ‘aid and advice’, in the context of the administrator’s power to nominate members to the MCD, is different from the one which has been projected by the Delhi government here.

NEW DELHI, MAY 17

(PTI): The Congress on Wednesday attacked the Modi government over the Supreme Court telling the Enforcement Directorate not to create an “atmosphere of fear”, saying the Centre should pay heed to the court’s remarks and stop wasting resources to “harass political rivals on trumpedup charges”.

The Supreme Court had made the remark on Tuesday after the Chhattisgarh government alleged that the probe agency is “running amok” and is trying to implicate Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel in a money laundering case linked to an alleged Rs 2,000-crore liquor scam in the state. “ED is Enforcement Directorate. Not Elimination Department to do away with political opponents,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said.

“Modi government should pay heed to the Supreme Court’s remarks and stop wasting government

resources to harass political rivals on trumped-up charges,” he said.

Ramesh’s attack on the government came a day after the Chhattisgarh government alleged before a bench of justices S K Kaul and A Amanullah that several state excise department officials have complained that the ED is threatening them and their family members with arrest and is “trying to implicate the CM (chief minister)”. The officers, the state government claimed, have said they will not work in the department.

“The ED is running amok. They are threatening excise officers,” senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Chhattisgarh government, had told the bench.

“It is shocking state of affairs. Now elections are coming and that is why it is happening,” he said.

Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the ED, countered the allegations and said the agency is probing a scam in the state.

The CBI had taken over the probe from the Delhi Police Special Cell, which was on the trail of Raghuvanshi since September last year, after getting information that some Indian journalists were collecting and passing on such

information to foreign intelligence agencies having potential to disturb relations with friendly countries.

The information received by the Special Cell suggested that a journalist was illegally collecting “sensitive details” about “future procurement of armed forces which reveal the strategic preparedness of our country’s classified communications/information related to national security, and details of strategic and diplomatic talks of India with our friendly countries, which can spoil the bilateral relations of India with

them...” the FIR said. According to the Special Cell’s FIR, Raghuvanshi allegedly procured and supplied such information to intelligence agencies of foreign countries.

On directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the CBI took over the case on December 9 last year registering the FIR against Raghuvanshi, they said. After a detailed background work and maintaining surveillance, the CBI on Tuesday carried out a raid at 15 places in Delhi-NCR and Jaipur where Raghuvanshi apparently resides, they said.

Centre approves PLI scheme for IT

NEW DELHI, MAY 17

(IANS): The Centre on Wednesday approved an updated production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware, nearly doubling the overall outlay for the scheme to around Rs 17,000 crore.

The tenure of the programme will be applicable for six years and the government expects investments worth Rs 2,430 crore in the scheme.

“This move will help more Indian companies grow and they can combine design and manufacturing to become global brands. We believe that the final investment in the IT hardware PLI 2.0 will be more than what we expect, just like the telecom PLI scheme,” IT and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told repo rters here. In the telecom PLI scheme, the expected invest-

ment was Rs 900 crore for the first year, but it reached Rs 1,600 crore in just one year. The IT hardware PLI 2,0 will help push Rs 335,000 crore worth incremental production and is likely to generate 75,000 direct jobs.

“Overall, we expect more than 2 lakh direct and indirect jobs via IT hardware PLI 2.0 scheme,” said the IT Minister.

After the success of the PLI scheme in mobile phones manufacturing, the government has come out with PLI 2.0 scheme for the IT hardware sector that aims to boost domestic manufacturing and attract large investments and jobs over the coming years.

“PLI 2.0 for IT hardware will be a catalyst for India’s $300 billion electronics manufacturing mission, an important part of India’s

MUMBAI, MAY 17 (PTI):

NEW DELHI, MAY 17

(PTI): Gold prices plunged by Rs 500 to Rs 60,580 per 10 grams in the national capital on Wednesday amid weak global cues, according to HDFC Securities.

The precious metal had settled at Rs 61,080 per 10 grams in the previous trade. Silver also softened by Rs 450 to Rs 73,300 per kilogramme.

“Spot gold prices in the Delhi markets traded at Rs 60,580 per 10 grams, down Rs 500 per 10 grams,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst - Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

In the overseas market, both gold and silver were trading lower at USD 1,992 per ounce and USD 23.82 per ounce, respectively.

Comex gold prices traded weaker on Wednesday weighed down by the dollar’s strength, Sriram Iyer, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities, said.

The rupee fell 13 paise to close at 82.38 (provisional) against the US currency on Wednesday, weighed down by the strength of the American currency in the overseas market and a negative trend in domestic equities.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 82.29 against the dollar, also the intra-day high, and settled for the day at 82.38 (provisional), down 13 paise from its previous close.

During the day, the rupee touched a low of 82.45 against the greenback.

On Tuesday, the rupee settled at 82.25 against the dollar. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.34 per cent to 102.91.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.19 per cent to USD 75.05 per barrel.

“The Indian rupee depreciated on weak domestic

markets and a strong dollar. However, FII inflows and easing crude oil prices cushioned the downside,” said Anuj Choudhary - Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas.

The USD-INR pair is expected to trade between 82 to 83 in the near term.

“We expect the rupee to trade with a negative bias on risk-off sentiments in global markets on the back of the debt ceiling crisis and weaker than expected data from China,” Choudhary said.

On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex closed 371.83 points or 0.60 per cent lower at 61,560.64 points. The broader NSE Nifty declined 104.75 points or 0.57 per cent to 18,181.75 points.

The cabinet’s approval of IT hardware PLI 2.0 is focused on expanding India’s production and presence in the global value chains of IT hardware/servers/laptops.

It will create additional incentives for companies to invest and set up their manufacturing base in India and also the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that incorporate Indian-designed IP into their systems and their products.

“We are working hard to deliver on PM Narendra Modi’s vision to broaden and deepen the electronics manufacturing ecosystem to propel India to become a significant player in the Global Electronics Supply Chain and catalyze our Techade goals,” said Chandrasekhar.

Centre to put 7.5 cr people with diabetes...

(From p-1) Paul also mentioned that the battle against NCDs have to be fought through the primary healthcare level and pointed out that India has created a platform to fight the menace through the creation of more than 1.5 lakh HWCs and operationalisation of telemedicine and digital health services.

To accelerate the prevention and management of hypertension, Paul urged state teams to adhere to all SOPs, especially the screening SOPs correctly at the

grassroots since screening is the bedrock of successful management of any disease. However, he noted that only screening is not enough. “Detection should lead to outcomes,’’ he said urging all stakeholders to ensure that at least 80 per cent of the diagnosed people are under treatment. The need for private sector engagement in this effort and the contribution of academic and research sector in creating models and different building blocks for achieving the

ambitious targets were also emphasised. Paul also emphasised that greater effort should be put in prevention which includes lifestyle changes through eating good food, exercising and other wellness practices. He highlighted the need for a Jan Andolan to make this effort more visible through community participation; and on the need for countries to work together and share each other’s successes in the spirit of “One Earth, One Health”.

Sensex, Nifty drop for 2nd day on selling in IT, tech shares

MUMBAI, MAY 17 (PTI):

Benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty declined for a second straight day on Wednesday due to intense selling in IT, banking and tech stocks amid a mixed trend in global equities.

The 30-share BSE Sensex declined 371.83 points or 0.60 per cent to close at 61,560.64 after a flat start. During the day, it tumbled 592.37 points or 0.95 per cent to 61,340.10.

The NSE Nifty declined 104.75 points or 0.57 per cent to settle at 18,181.75.

“In response to weak global sentiments, domestic investors remained cautious as the US market grappled with recession concerns led by recent economic data indicating slowdown.

The US retail sales figures for April reflected a decrease in demand, and ongoing debt ceiling negotiations further dampened market sentiment,” Vinod Nair, Head of Research at

Geojit Financial Services, said. Among the Sensex firms, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Asian Paints, Tata Consultancy Services, HCL Technologies, Infosys, Tata Steel, Wipro, Bajaj Finance, Tata Motors, Titan and Bajaj Finserv were the major laggards. In contrast, IndusInd Bank, ITC, Bharti Airtel, Maruti, UltraTech Cement, Mahindra & Mahindra and State Bank of India were the gainers. “Markets lingered in negative territory as cautious investors continued to book profit after the recent spike. The subdued economic readings coming in from the US and China once again raise concerns of a slowing economy and hence recession fears, which is making investors jittery about the future,” said Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research (Retail), Kotak Securities Ltd.

In the broader market, the BSE smallcap gauge

climbed 0.25 per cent, while the midcap index dipped 0.16 per cent.

Among the indices, realty declined 1.29 per cent, teck fell by 0.89 per cent, utilities (0.82 per cent), IT (0.79 per cent), oil & gas (0.60 per cent) and telecommunication (0.57 per cent).

FMCG, industrials, auto, services were the gainers. In Asia, Seoul and Tokyo markets ended in the green, while Shanghai and Hong Kong settled lower. European markets were trading on a mixed note.

The US market ended lower on Tuesday. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were buyers on Tuesday as they bought equities worth Rs 1,406.86 crore, according to exchange data.

Meanwhile, global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.12 per cent to USD 74.82 per barrel.

On Tuesday, the 30-share BSE benchmark had declined 413.24 points or 0.66 per cent to settle at 61,932.47.

Credit Suisse dispute: SpiceJet gets relief from SC till July 18

NEW DELHI, MAY 17

(AGENCIES): Budget carrier SpiceJet on Wednesday got interim relief from Supreme Court in Credit Suisse’s contempt plea as the apex court adjourned it to July 18.

According to Business Today report, SpiceJet informed the court that it will be making payments of $500,000 to Credit Suisse on 15th of each month and urged the court to adjourn the case by two months.

The apex court has accordingly deferred the hearing without issuing any directions of notice to the airline to monitor the payments it makes.

The budget carrier assured the Supreme Court that it will pay a total of $1.5 million by August 15. Credit Suisse is claiming unpaid dues of $4.4 million as per settlement scheme.

The dispute rose over the non-payment of dues by SpiceJet to Switzerlandbased SR Technics, which maintains, repairs and overhauls aircraft for airlines. SpiceJet had defaulted on dues to the tune of $20 million.

In September 2012, SR Technics entered into a finance agreement with Credit Suisse, assigning the lender all of its current and future rights to receive payments under the agreement.

Taliban supreme leader appoints new Acting PM

KABUL, MAY 17

(IANS): Taliban’s Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada in a special decree has appointed Mawlawi Abdul Kabir as the new acting Prime Minister of Afghanistan. It is reported that acting Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund is unwell and until he recovers, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir will serve as the head of the Taliban government, TOLO News reported.

Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund has served as the Prime Minister of the Taliban government since the group’s return to power in 2021.

US wants to see a successful Pak

WASHINGTON, MAY 17 (PTI): Describing Islamabad as an important partner in the region, the White House on Tuesday said it wants to see a successful Pakistan. “We want to see Pakistan be a success. And we want to see the Pakistan government live up to the strongest aspirations of the Pakistani people,” John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, told reporters at the White House. “Pakistan is an important partner in the region. They are suffering from the threat of terrorism every single day. And we are mindful of the challenges that they are facing politically and economically as well. In the United States, they will continue to find a good friend,” Kirby said in response to a question.

Outlawed tribal outfit kills 2 soldiers in Bangladesh: Army

DHAKA, MAY 17 (PTI): Two Bangladeshi soldiers were killed while two others were injured when a newly-formed tribal outfit attacked a military team in the southeastern hills of the country, the Army said on Wednesday. The attack occurred late on Tuesday when security forces rushed to the Rumma region of t he Bandarban district after receiving intelligence about a makeshift “terrorist hideout” of the Kuki-Chin National Army (KNA) group, and the outfit’s armed operatives opened fire at them, the InterService Public Relations (ISPR) directorate of the defence ministry said.

MELBOURNE,

MAY

17 (PTI): Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Wednesday cancelled the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Sydney on May 24 after US President Joe Biden postponed his visit to Australia, and indicated the four leaders of the grouping, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will meet on the margins of the G7 meeting this weekend in Japan.

President Biden announced on Tuesday that he will postpone the Australia leg of his Asia trip, along with that of Papua New Guinea, given the uncertainty and intense negotiations with the opposition Republican party to ensure that America does not default on its debt for the first time in history.

“The Quad leaders’ meeting will not be going ahead in Sydney next week,”

Prime Minister Albanese said in Tweed Heads, a town in New South Wales.

Albanese said the lead-

ers of Australia, the US, India and Japan would now meet at the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan this weekend.

“We, though, will be having that discussion between Quad leaders in Japan. I thank Prime Minister (Fumio) Kishida for his invitation for me to attend the G7 and it is appropriate that we talk.

The Quad is an important body and we want to make sure that it occurs at the leadership level and we’ll be having that discussion over the weekend,” Albanese said. President Biden has been forced to turn his attention to domestic politics, as he works to hash out a deal with Republicans to prevent the US from defaulting on its debts at the end of

Pak court extends bar on Imran Khan’s arrest till May 31

ISLAMABAD, MAY 17 (PTI): A top Pakistani court here on Wednesday extended until May 31 its order to prevent the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan in any case filed against him after May 9. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) was hearing Khan’s plea seeking relief from the court over fear that the government may arrest the 70-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief again.

Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, after hearing arguments by lawyers, accepted Khan’s counsel Barrister Gohar Khan’s plea seeking an extension in the court order to stop police from arresting Khan.

Khan was not present in the court. The court was hearing PTI’s plea seeking details of all the cases filed against Khan. Khan’s party said the PTI chief was booked in over 100 cases across the country.

The court extended its order to bar Khan’s arrest until May 31 when the next hearing would be held.

Khan, the IHC on Friday granted him protective bail for two weeks in the AlQadir Trust corruption case and barred the authorities from arresting the former Pakistan prime minister in any case registered anywhere in the country until May 17. The IHC also asked to provide all details about such cases. The court verdict had come a day after the Supreme Court termed Khan’s dramatic arrest from the IHC premises on May 9 “invalid and unlawful”. A triumphant Khan returned to his Lahore home on Saturday after having locked himself in the IHC premises for hours for fear of rearrest despite being granted bail on Friday.

“Because that has to be solved prior to June 1 - otherwise there are quite drastic consequences for the US economy, which will flow on to the global economyhe understandably has had to make that decision,” Albanese said.

The Prime Minister also said Biden was “disappointed” as he was unable to come to Australia and that the Quad leaders would instead try to gather on the margins of the G7 leaders meeting in Hiroshima.

“All four leaders - President Biden, Prime Minister Kishida, Prime Minister Modi and myself - will be at the G7, held in Hiroshima on Saturday and Sunday. We are attempting to get together over that period of time [and] I’ll have a bilateral discussion with President Biden,” he said.

“At this stage, we haven’t got a time locked in for that arrangement.”

Prime Minister Albanese said that his Indian counterpart would still travel next week to Australia despite the cancellation of the Quad leaders’ meeting and he is looking forward to

The Australian premier was responding to a question on whether Prime Minister Modi will still come to Sydney after Albanese cancelled the Quad leaders’ meeting in Sydney on May 24 as President Biden postponed his visit to Australia.

“Prime Minister Modi will be here next week for a bilateral meeting with myself,” Albanese told ABC Radio in Brisbane.

Prime Minister Modi will also have business meetings and will hold a very public event at Homebush at the Olympic site in Sydney, he said.

“He will also be engaging with Australian-India business relations …I look forward to welcoming him to Sydney,” Albanese said. But he indicated Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida would cancel his visit in the wake of Biden’s announcement. “Prime Minister Kishida … was just coming for the Quad meeting. There wasn’t a separate bilateral programme,” Albanese said.

Albanese said he will attend the G20 meeting that will be held in New Delhi later this year.

(PTI): A top Pakistani minister said on Wednesday that those involved in attacks on army installations in the wake of former prime minister Imran Khan’s arrest would be tried under the stringent military laws, amid concerns expressed by the rights groups.

Addressing a press conference, information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said scores of people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in arson attacks and vandalism on May 9 following former premier Khan’s arrest from the Islamabad High Court premises.

The minister said it was the state’s responsibility to arrest and punish the culprits. “Attackers will be tried under the relevant civil and military laws,” she said, adding that the National Security Committee has also “categorically vowed to take strict action against them,” she said. She said that martyrs’ graveyards were attacked which was akin to showing enmity towards the country. “We have the video evidence and we will not spare anyone who did this,” she said. Former British PM Liz Truss warns of China threats during Taiwan visit

TAIPEI, MAY 17 (AP):

Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss warned of the economic and political threats to the West posed by China during a visit Wednesday to Beijing’s democratic rival Taiwan.

Truss is the first former British prime minister since Margaret Thatcher in the 1990s to visit the self-governing island republic that China claims as its own territory, to be conquered by force if necessary.

Still a sitting member of the House of Commons, Truss follows a growing list of elected representatives and former officials from the U.S., EU nations and elsewhere who have visited Taiwan to show their defiance of China’s threats and attempts to cut off the island and its high-tech economy from the international community. “There are those who say they don’t want another Cold War. But this is not a choice we are in a position to make. Because China has already embarked on a self-reliance drive, whether we want to

decouple from their economy or not,” Truss said in an address to the Prospect Foundation at a hotel in the Taiwanese capital, Taipei.

“China is growing its navy at an alarming rate and is undertaking the biggest military build-up in peacetime history,” she said.

“They have already formed alliances with other nations that want to see the free world in decline. They have already made a choice about their strategy. The only choice we have is whether we appease and accommodate — or we take action to prevent conflict,” Truss said. Elsewhere, Truss praised her successor, Rishi Sunak, for describing China

under the army law, she said he would be tried by the “relevant courts”.

As government officials press to use the Pakistan Army Act and the Official Secrets Act against those responsible for violence, local and international rights bodies have expressed concern.

Amnesty International and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan issued separate statements on Tuesday and raised an alarm at the possibility of trial under military rules. Dinushika Dissanayake, Amnesty’s deputy regional director for South Asia, said that trying civilians in military courts was contrary to international law. Dissanayake accused the Pakistani government of using military law as “an intimidation tactic, designed to crack down on dissent by exercising fear

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said civilians arrested should be tried in civil instead of military courts.

“While those responsible for arson and damaging public and private property during the recent protests should be held to account, they remain entitled to due process,” the group said in a statement.

Experts are divided over the trial of civilians under military regulation.

President Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Abid Zuberi said in an interview with Geo News that civilians who damage military installations can be tried under the army act.

“Civilians who damage military installations can be tried under the Army Act. In 2017,” the legal expert said. However, there are others who question the legality of such trials. Commenting on the development, Former SCBA president Kamran Murtaza said: “I was against the military courts earlier, and I am still against it today.”Pakistan has a history of using military courts for trials of civilians.

WHO calls for safe, ethical use of AI tools for health

GENEVA, MAY 17 (IANS): The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for caution when deploying large language model tools (LLMs) generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

In a statement, the WHO said it was imperative for the risks of LLMs to be carefully examined, reports Xinhua news agency. LLMs are used to improve access to health information, as decisionsupport tools, and to enhance diagnostic capacity in under-resourced settings.

The WHO has warned that the caution normally exercised for new technologies is not being consistently applied to LLMs.

The UN body notes that precipitous adoption of untested systems could lead to errors by healthcare workers, cause harm to patients, and erode trust in AI. This could undermine or delay the potential longterm benefits of such technologies. Therefore, it has called for rigorous over -

sight of LLMs, to ensure they are used in safe, effective, and ethical ways. As technology firms work to commercialize LLMs, policy-makers must ensure patient safety and protection, the WHO noted. Clear evidence of the benefits of LLMs must be measured before they can be used on a large scale in routine healthcare and medicine -- whether by individuals, care providers or health system administrators and policy-makers. The WHO’s guidance on the ethics and governance of AI for health, released in June 2021, emphasizes the importance of applying ethical principles and appropriate governance when designing, developing, and deploying AI for health.

REJOINDER TO MAOVA-KUKI GB AND VILLAGE COUNCIL’S PRESS RELEASE ON 9th APRIL 2023.

The Chathe Valley Landholders Union took much restraint to respond to the Maova Village Council and GB’s illogical and provocative Order published in print media on 9th April 2023 and 2nd June 2018 imposed upon the land owners whose lands fall within the periphery of Maova Village. We would remind Maova Village not to forget your history of arrival to this very place as outsiders from unknown land and how your ancestors were graciously accommodated/adopted by the neighboring Tenyimia villages and have continued to live together as brothers for generations since then. However, your “illegal diktats’ over the surrounding lands that are now mostly purchased and owned by the same tribesmen who once extended shelter to your wandering ancestors have compelled us to dwell on our history once again. Although we hate to point it out, the behavior of your village has reminded us of the story of “a sick snake that bit the master when it regained its strength”.

KHARTOUM, MAY 17

(IANS): The already dire humanitarian crisis in Khartoum is worsening as the violent armed clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have entered the second month.

According to the latest report by the Sudanese Doctors Union, at least 822 people have died since the clashes broke out on April 15, reports Xinhua news agency. Residents in the conflict zones are facing acute shortages of basic services, food, electricity, and water supply, while the situation has been exacerbated by air bombardments and looting of major local markets.

This has disrupted the supply of daily necessities, sent the prices of food commodities to skyrocket, and raised fears about an inflation surge that could push millions of Sudanese to the edge of starvation.

Mohamed Noureddine Hashim, a Sudanese economist, told Xinhua that “major food commodity factories and import companies of the country are in Khartoum, but most of those factories have now been vandalized to closure”.

He warned the number of citizens in need of urgent aid will likely increase “as millions of employees are currently unable to work because of the war.”

It is also for the record of the Naga public that there is no land dispute/ encroachment issue between the parties i.e. Maova Village and other Naga people who have purchased land from the former. However, the Maova Village Council’s attempt to impose an imported alien law upon the indigenous Naga Landholders in the ancestral homeland of the latter near its Village is very provocative and communal. The Village’s ridiculous Order prohibits the Naga land owners to take up developmental works in their own owned/purchased land, prohibits erection of any permanent structure and fence. The Naga land owners have been obstructed from developmental works, construction labourers threatened, physically assaulted, constructions damaged and construction materials seized.

Despite the Dobashi Court’s standing Order, the open defiance and arrogance shown towards the DB Court and the Naga customary laws have continued. Maova (Kuki) Village Council has issued such illegal restrictions after the land is sold off to the purchasers. We are all aware that even the Central or the state Govt. has no authority to obstruct the land owners from developing their land under Article 371(A) and that the landowner’s rights cannot be questioned by any court of law.

The leaders of Maova (Kuki) Village Council should not try to import the virus of communal hatred and conflicts to our ancestral land and Paoboi Changsan should keep in mind that regressive policies cannot take the place of progressive and pluralistic society of today bound by the legal rule of law. Our silence has been misread as weakness for a long time and therefore, before response is given in equal measures, let sanity prevail among the Maova Village leaders for the good and prosperity of all parties and people and for posterity!

Down’ hitmaker Rema: Thanks to social media, I knew I was popular in

Nigerian singing sensation Rema, whose hit song ‘Calm Down’ has made waves on the internet with over one million Reels made on it, says without social media, he wouldn’t have known how popular his music is in India.

Does he credit social media for the popularity of his song ‘Calm Down’?

In a conversation with IANS, he said: “Every song is meant to do what it is supposed to do and I feel like ‘Calm Down’ is just doing what it’s supposed to do and apparently this is the perfect time for Calm Down.”

He added: “When I posted my first freestyle on social media and that kind of got me the attention from my label and everything and social media then helped me reach a wider audience and engage with fans all across the world.”

The 23-year-old said that social media is a good

Ankylosing spondylitis can be a devastating disease. But the good news is that the future is brighter than ever before. The optimism for better life is mentioned below:

We Have Better Diagnosis Tools

Doctors -- including primary care physicians -- are now more educated about ankylosing spondylitis. So patients are getting diagnosed earlier, which improves their prognosis.

Oftentimes, patients in the initial stages of disease won’t have any signs of inflammation of the sacroiliac joints -- the joints that connect the spine to the pelvic bone -- on an X-ray.

But doctors can now test for the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) gene, HLA-B27, and do MRIs of the area to see if there’s inflammation. In the past, by the time we made a diagnosis and embarked on whatever minimal treatment options we had, the damage

tool.

“Without social media, I wouldn’t have even known how popular my music is in India. Social media is a very good tool to actually gauge your receptiveness and popularity.”

Afro beat is currently

the rage globally, how does Rema see the genre getting so much popularity? Calling it an evergrowing community, Rema said: “The only current trend in Afrobeats that I’ve observed is the new wave and the experimentation

India

and trying to do something fresh. There is now confidence to be creatively free.”

He added: “The new generation has more stance because everyone has brought their evolving ideas on the table of Afrobeats and it’s an evergrowing community.”

Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, is thankful to god for not facing challenges while trying to keep a balance between the blend of different genres in his music.

“I do not face any kind of challenges. It comes easy to me and I am grateful to God for the same. I pray a lot and am a very spiritual person, its never hard to me. I don’t write, I create.”

Rema was in the country for his ‘Rema Calm Down India Tour’ from May 12-14, during which he performed in cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Hopeful about Ankylosing Spondylitis treatment

was already done. We were chasing the disease and trying to clean up its effects, as opposed to being ahead of it and attempting to stop it in its tracks.

Treatments Have Advanced Biologics have revolutionized treatment of ankylosing spondylitis over the past 2 decades. These drugs slow certain cytokines, which are molecules that signal your cells to activate inflammation throughout your body. Cytokines play an important role in preventing disease, but when they’re overactivated, they can trigger inflammatory disease such as ankylosing spondylitis.

We’ve made an enormous difference in changing the face of this disease with these extraordinary tools at our finger tips. We’ve gone from barely scratching the surface of ankylosing spondylitis to people being able to achieve complete symptom relief and live normal

lives. There’s still a lot of work that needs to be done, but it’s so wonderful for me to be able to tell patients that they’re in remission. Medications currently available include:

Anti-tumor necrosis factor therapy (TNF inhibitors). These were the first biologics to be approved for ankylosing spondylitis in 2003. They treat not only joint arthritis, but gut and eye inflammation, as well as spinal arthritis. They do lower your immunity, so

you’re at increased risk of infection, including tuberculosis (a TB test is required before starting). But many of my patients see amazing results. If they don’t respond to one, they often will to another. There are currently five FDA-approved for ankylosing spondylitis: Enbrel, Humira, Remicade, Simponi, and Cimzia.

Anti-interleukin 17 therapy (IL-17 inhibitors). This is another class of biologic medications. There

are currently two approved by the FDA: secukinumab (Cosentyx) and ixekizumab (Taltz). Since IL-17 inhibitors target different cytokines than the TNF inhibitors, they’re a good option for patients who don’t respond to TNF inhibitors or aren’t able to tolerate them. There’s still no cure for ankylosing spondylitis, and there may never be one. But at least now, people with the condition can lead long, productive lives.

There Are Promising

Treatments in the Pipeline

While biologics are very successful, they don’t work for everyone. That’s why I’m so excited about Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, medications traditionally used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. They inhibit several cytokines key to the progression of ankylosing spondylitis. While there are three currently available in the

United States -- tofacitinib (Xeljanz), baricitinib (Olumiant), and upadacitinib (Rinvoq) -- none have been approved to treat ankylosing spondylitis. But that may soon change. A 2021 study published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases found that tofacitinib (Xeljanz) significantly improved symptoms such as fatigue, inflammation, and back pain in patients with ankylosing spondylitis compared to those who took a placebo.

Even better, JAK inhibitors are more convenient for people than biologics, since you can take them orally. Biologics have to be taken via an at-home injection or an IV in your doctor’s office.

Today, when I see people with ankylosing spondylitis, I stress to them that in just a matter of 2 decades, treatment -- and prognosis -- has changed dramatically. People are able to work, have families, and continue doing their favorite sports

and activities. Things that would have seemed unthinkable even just 15 years ago. There’s still no cure for ankylosing spondylitis, and there may never be one. But at least now, people with the condition can lead long, productive lives. I’m very hopeful that as we push our understanding of the disease and gain a better understanding of where it comes from, we’ll make progress in therapies.

In the meantime, I help

guide people to their best treatments, encourage them to exercise and participate in physical therapy, and suggest they eat an antiinflammatory diet rich in healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, and fatty fish. If they do all this, there’s a good chance they can control the course of their disease, rather than having their ankylosing spondylitis control them.

Inter Milan beat Milan to reach UCL final

MILAN, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): A secondhalf goal by forward Lautaro Martinez earned Inter Milan a 1-0 victory over rivals AC Milan in their Champions League semifinal second leg on Tuesday, sealing a 3-0 aggregate win to book their ticket to the showpiece in Istanbul.

Milan recovered some of the spark they lacked in the first leg but Inter’s Martinez put the tie to bed when he struck powerfully from close range in the 74th minute at the San Siro.

Inter went into the game holding a 2-0 advantage after Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan had struck early in a flying start to the first leg and never looked in serious danger of missing out on the final, where they will face Real Madrid or Manchester City on June 10.

Inter, who overcame Portuguese pair Porto and Benfica to reach the semis, will play in the final for the sixth time and first since lifting their third European

Cup in 2009-10 under Jose Mourinho.

Inter coach Simone

Inzaghi fielded an unchanged team from the first leg, with Martinez and Dzeko up front, having rested players in Serie A over the weekend.

Main forward Rafael

Leao returned for Milan after an adductor prob -

lem sidelined him in the first leg, with Junior Messias and Malick Thiaw starting in place of Alexis Saelemaekers and Simon Kjaer. A much more daring Milan side could have scored early but Inter keeper Andre Onana saved a low Brahim Diaz shot that was heading towards the

bottom-right corner.

Leao had a great chance to halve the deficit late in the first half but struck inches wide, before Milan keeper Mike Maignan superbly denied Dzeko who leaped high to meet a free kick.

While Stefano Pioli’s Milan kept probing for an opening to spark a come-

“Today marks the first day towards this extraordinary tournament with teams from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives, and Bhutan from South Asia, and also our two invitees Lebanon and Kuwait. Let’s all come together as a region united by the joy of football,” he added.

Meanwhile, AIFF Secretary General Prabhakaran said that the addition of Lebanon and Kuwait wll add to the competitiveness of the tournament.

back, Inter hinted in the first half that they would not be taking their foot of the gas. Martinez eventually proved Milan’s executioner, playing a one-two with substitute Romelu Lukaku before scoring his sixth goal in Inter’s last six games.

It is the first time Inter have progressed from a knockout tie against their city rivals in the competition, with Milan coming out on top both in the 2002-03 semi-finals and the 2004-05 quarters.

It is also the first time in almost 50 years that Milan have lost to Inter four times in a single campaign, the only other time being in 1973-74. And never before in their history had they gone four games in a row without finding the net against Inter.

Milan, who have won only two in their last seven Serie A games, risk dropping out of Europe’s elite club competition next season as they currently sit four points off the top four.

LONDON, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): Kenyan athlete and 10-km road race world record holder Rhonex Kipruto has been provisionally suspended for an anti-doping violation, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said on Wednesday.

Kipruto, who also won a 10,000m bronze medal in the 2019 world championships, broke the 10-km road race world re-

cord in 2020. The AIU said on Twitter that Kipruto had been suspended “for the use of a Prohibited Substance/Method (ABP)”.

ABP refers to the Athlete Biological Passport, which shows discrepancies that can reveal the effects of doping.

The AIU added that a notice of the charge has been issued to the 23-yearold runner.

DC hurt PBKS’ play-off chances with 15-run win

DHARAMSALA, MAY 17 (PTI): Beleaguered Delhi Capitals finally came out all guns blazing as they played party poopers to all but knock Punjab Kings out of play-off contention with a 15-run victory in the IPL, here on Wednesday. Already out of the playoff race, Delhi Capitals finally came to the party in their penultimate match of the season to post an imposing 213/2 after PBKS opted to bowl. Rilee Rossouw exhibited some exceptional strokeplay in a 37-ball 82 not out, while Prithvi Shaw (54; 38b) also slammed a fifty on his comeback after about a month as DC scored their first 200-plus total of this season. In response, PBKS managed just 198/8 in the stipulated 20 overs despite all the fielding harakiri committed by DC.

Englishman Liam Livingstone slammed a 48-ball 94, studded with five fours and as many as nine sixes, but it was not enough as the total proved too much.

While Delhi now are ninth on the table after a consolation win, Punjab Kings due to this heavy defeat stay put on 12 after 13 games and even a win in the last match and a 14-point finish might not be enough

as the net run-rate -0.308 only added insult to injury.

The Preity Zinta coowned side since their 2014 final appearance, have not even made it to last four stage for nine years in a row.

But DC’s fielding effort did give them enough chances. As many as three catches were dropped including Livingstone on three, and Taide on 35, both in the bowling of Kuldeep Yadav who returned with 0/21 from his three overs. PBKS took a tactical decision to retire out rookie Atharva Taide after his 42-ball 55 (5x4, 2x6) as he simply found it difficult

to get going after first part of the innings. Livingstone kept the PBKS run chase going racing to a 30-ball fifty, his sixth of the tournament as he brought the equation down to 38 from last two overs from being an near impossible 79 from four overs.

Three sixes off Mukesh Kumar in the next over put the equation on course for PBKS before Anrich Nortje, who had dropped Livingstone early on, redeemed himself with a perfect penultimate over. DC bowlers stifled PBKS’ tall chase early on with leftarm seamer Khaleel Ahmed starting off

Oversight panel is past, we expect justice from court: Vinesh Phogat

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 (PTI): The protesting wrestlers on Wednesday said that they are no longer concerned about the findings of the Oversight Committee constituted by the Sports Ministry and expect justice only from the court.

The Sports Ministry had constituted a six-member panel headed by legendary boxer MC Mary Kom on January 23 and asked it to submit its findings on the allegations of sexual harassment levelled by women grapplers against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The committee submitted its report in the first week of April but the ministry is yet to make the findings public. Asked whether she was aware of the findings of the Oversight Committee, 2018 Jakarta Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat, said, “That is past. We are not deliberating or thinking on what the committee has done or hasn’t. The duration of the the committee was three months...it’s over now and the fight has gone to court, so we will focus on

that,” said Vinesh.

The protest by India’s top wrestlers, including Vinesh, Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, who are demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan for allegedly sexually harassing seven women grapplers, entered its 25th day with no solution in sight.

On Wednesday, the grapplers and their supporters took out a procession from Jantar Mantar to Bangla Sahib Gurudwara and offered prayers there.

“We are confident, we will win the fight for justice. We will make our best effort that not just the global wrestling community gets to know about our plight

but we will also reach out to athletes in other disciplines. No country has remained untouched by incidents of sexual harassment in sport,” added Vinesh.

She added that the decision to be taken by the senior khap panchayat leaders on May 21 will be crucial in their fight against Brij Bhushan. “Whatever decision is taken by our elders on May 21 (the deadline set by the wrestlers for concrete action against Brij Bhushan) will be binding on us. They will chart our future course of action,” said Vinesh.

She also criticised those people who were trying to give the agitation of the wrestlers a political colour.

“This protest is not a platform for political parties. Every citizen of the country is free to visit Jantar Mantar.

We welcome everyone at protest site without discriminating on party, religion or caste lines,” she said.

The wrestlers had on Tuesday visited the Hanuman temple near Connaught Place accompanied by Bhim Army president Chandrashekhar Azad and hundreds of supporters.

with a maiden, while Ishant Sharma dismissing Dhawan off the first ball. From 10/1 in three overs, PBKS duo Prabhsimran and Atharva finally stepped it up with five boundaries (4x4, 1x6) in a row across two overs. Already out of playoff race, DC got off to a flying start with Prithvi Shaw smashing a 54 on his comeback after nearly a month. Shaw, who made his last appearance in this season’s IPL against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 20, returned to form to post a 35-ball 50, his first in 13 IPL innings. Shaw copped body

blows from Rabada en route his 38-ball knock (7x4, 1x6) as he along with his skipper David Warner (46 from 31b; 5x4, 2x6) gave their best start of the season. The duo put together a 94-run opening stand, their highest this season before Rossouw took charge of the proceedings with his maiden IPL fifty that came off 25 balls. From a sedate six for no loss in two overs, DC raced to 61 without losing a wicket in the powerplay with Warner and Shaw putting up their highest opening partnership this season after PBKS opted to bowl. This was the second instance when DC did not lose a wicket inside the powerplay this season. Nothing went in PBKS’ favour on Wednesday, with Rahul Chahar dropping a sitter to give Warner a reprieve on 39. The Aussie was done in by a spectacular catch by Shikhar Dhawan but by then DC were on course for their first 200-plus total this season.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 213/2 in 20 overs (Prithvi Shaw 54, Rilee Rossouw 82 not out, David Warner 46; Sam Curran 2/36). Punjab Kings 198/8 (Liam Livingstone 94; Anrich Nortje 2/36). DC win 15 runs.

Italian Open: Rune repeats Djokovic upset to storm into semi-finals

ROME, MAY 17 (AGENCIES): Holger Rune sent an off-colour Novak Djokovic tumbling out of the Italian Open on Wednesday as the young Dane prevailed 6-2 4-6 6-2 in an epic battle against the defending champion to secure his place in the semi-finals.

For the first time since 2004, neither Djokovic nor the injured Rafa Nadal will be in the Rome final.

Rune outlasted Djokovic in three sets in last year’s Paris Masters final and the 20-year-old made the perfect start in search of another upset by breaking the world number one in the opening game of the match.

The seventh seed showcased his aggressive style and mixed up his game with delicate drops to race ahead 4-1 as Djokovic looked uncomfortable in between points having admitted a day earlier that he was dealing with a physical issue.

Rune squandered a late breakpoint opportunity but the fast-fading Djokovic could not prevent him from closing out the first set as sections of the crowd ap-

NEW DELHI, MAY 17

(PTI): Fifteen wrestlers were on Wednesday picked to represent India in the upcoming U-17 and U-23 Asian Championships in Kyrgyzstan on the first day of the selection trials held in Patiala and Sonepat under the aegis of IOAconstituted ad hoc panel to run the national federation.

Three wrestlers each were named in the U-17 freestyle, greco-roman and women’s categories while two each were picked in the U-23 freestyle, grecoroman and women’s sections.

The four-day selection trials began on Wednesday at NIS Patiala and SAI Regional Centre in Sonepat under the chairmanship of ad hoc panel member Bhupinder Singh Bajwa.

SAI Sonepat Executive Director Lalita Sharma, Competition Director Gian Singh, Competition Manager Rajeev Tomar and chief coach Jagmander Singh were among those

who were present at the trials.

On Wednesday, a total of 170 wrestlers participated in the freestyle trials in Sonepat, while 94 in grecoroman and 89 in women’s wrestling took part at NIS, Patiala.

The selection of the remaining weight categories will be done in the remaining three days at the two centres.

The selection trials

had witnessed tremendous response with the IOAconstituted ad hoc committee receiving record 1704 entries. “The ad-hoc Committee received 1704 nos. record entries in U23 FS (free style): 393, GR (grecoroman): 220, WW (women wrestling): 151. peared to be in disbelief over the six-times champion’s struggles. Djokovic took a painkiller midway through the second set and the 35-yearold roared back to life to go up 5-2 following a break and a hold, as Rune completely lost his cool over a line call by the chair umpire.

Rune, who launched an expletive-laden rant while receiving treatment for a leg problem, responded with a break of his own but surrendered the set following a lengthy break in play due to rain.

Ferocious hitting from both players marked the start of the decider but a dominant Rune pounced on Djokovic’s serve en route to a 4-0 lead and completed a famous win in a rare spell of sunshine.

Djokovic will relinquish the top ranking to Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz before the May 28-June 11 French Open, where the Serbian will look to claim a men’s record 23rd Grand Slam title having gone level with Nadal by winning the Australian Open.
