NEW DELHI, MAY 15 (AGENCIES): Union Home Minister Amit Shah has given clear instructions to Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh to spare no one responsible for violence in state which has left 73 people dead, an official in the ministry has said.

The Centre has also asked the state government to begin mega outreach programmes with all ethnic communities, he added.

Biren Singh was in Delhi on Sunday and briefed the Union minister on the situation in Manipur, where violence broke out 10 days ago.

focus on connecting people from both ethnic communities and restore peace at the earliest,” the official said.

Shah has stressed that perpetrators of violence need to be dealt with a firm hand even if they have political affiliations.

“The Home Minister directed strict action against the perpetrators of violence and assured complete support and help of the Central government to ensure lasting peace,” he said.

Shah also held series of meetings with the representatives of the Meitei and Kuki communities and other stakeholders to review the measures being taken for restoring peace in the state.

“It was a complete review done on various law and order issues and also Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA),” another official said, referring to the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, a law that gives sweeping powers to the military and protects soldiers from legal prosecution.

Shah, he said, met the Meitei delegation on Sunday and representatives from Kuki community from Manipur and a group of Civil Society Organisation from Mizoram on Monday.

Shah assured that the government would take all measures to protect various

communities in the state and urged discussion with all factions and spread the message of peace and assured that justice would be done.

It may be recalled that violent clashes took place in Manipur on May 3 during a “tribal solidarity march” in protest against Meiteis’ demand for Scheduled Tribes status.

The clashes were preceded by tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, which led to a series of smaller agitations.

Though Meities comprise 64 per cent of the state’s population, they occupy 10 per cent of the state’s territory as non-tribals are not allowed to buy land in notified hill areas.

Their inclusion in the ST category will enable them to purchase land and the possibility has unleashed tribal emotions.

Biren Singh on Monday rejected the demand raised by 10 Kuki MLAs for a “separate administration”, equivalent to a separate state, comprising the Kuki tribal-dominated districts of Manipur, the 10 legislators in a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated their demand.

The 10 MLAs, seven of them are ruling BJP, in their letter to Shah said “that Manipur is now partitioned, is the ground reality”. “(After the May 3 ethnic violence), there are no tribals left in the Imphal valley. There are no (nontribals) people belonging to the Meitei community left in the hills. The government of Manipur and its police machinery were communalised and used in the pogrom against the Kuki

tribals,” the signed 3-page letter noted.

The letter, available with IANS, to Amit Shah said that “the recent institutionalised ethnic cleansing and atrocities committed by majority Meitei community against the ethnic KukiChin-Mizo-Zomi-Hmar minority community has left everyone aghast”.

“Huge population transfers between the valley and the hills inhabited by the Kuki-Chin-Mizo- ZomiHmar had occurred. Kuki colonies and houses were marked and attacked with precision in Imphal city.”

“The spark was ignited in the afternoon of May 3 when Meitei miscreants set fire to the Anglo-Kuki war memorial gate at Leisang in Churachandpur district.”

Agencies: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh Monday rejected a demand made by 10 tribal MLAs of the state for a separate administration for Kuki-dominated districts. “There is no threat to the integrity of Manipur,” the CM told the media when asked about the MLAs’ letter.

Singh also said the priority of his government is to restore peace and normalcy in the state. He also asked DCs and SPs of various districts to ensure that the properties of those who fled homes due to the violence are not looted.

Active Covid cases decline to 14,493

(IANS): The US State Department outlined in great detail “numerous reports during the year of violence by law enforcement authorities against members of religious minorities in multiple states” in India in its 2022 annual report on the state of freedom of religion around the world.

NEW DELHI, MAY 15 (PTI): India has logged 801 new Covid-19 infections, while active cases dipped to 14,493 from 15,515, the Health Ministry said on Monday. The death toll increased to 5,31,778 with eight deaths which includes four reconciled by Kerala. The Covid case tally was recorded at 4.49 crore (4,49,81,475).

The active cases now comprise 0.03 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has been recorded at 98.78 per cent, the ministry said. These chats can be locked using several security options like passcode, fingerprint, or Face ID authentication. The Chat Lock feature is available on both WhatsApp for Android and iOS. To get the feature, users will need to download the latest version of WhatsApp available on App Store, or Google Play Store.

The feature is available with WhatsApp for Android version 2.23.10.71

and WhatsApp for iOS in version 2.23.9.77.

To move any conversation in the locked folder, one needs to simply tap on the thread and click on Chat Lock feature. As stated in the blog, Meta is working to introduce several new updates to the feature, such as creating customised passwords which are different from already existing passwords for unlocking the phone.

The social media company is also working to make the Chat Lock feature work across all companion devices in which a WhatsApp account is active.

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 5 (NPN): Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has declared as cancelled/invalid with effect from May 16, 2023 all the existing registered trade licence under DMC, who have not renewed their trade licence and defaulted.

In an office notification, DMC administrator W Manpai Phom stated that henceforth all unregistered/ defaulters of trade licence would apply under the new trade licence management system with payment of one-time registration fee and security deposit equivalent to one year trade licence & sanitary services fees as per

the new terms and condition laid down for issuance of trade licence under DMC. Further, DMC also notified that it would be undertaking physical verification and mapping of all shops/business establishment location under DMC jurisdiction and defaulters would be penalized.

DMC has, therefore, directed all the unregistered/defaulters of trade licence to immediately apply for registration under the new trade licence management system to avoid initiation of action and penalties as per provision of terms and condition laid down by DMC. K Y M C

DIMAPUR: Advisor of Land Resources, G. Ikuto G. Zhimomi on Monday said that Nagaland has a huge potential to generate and earn more than Rs. 2000 crore annually through cash crop plantations such as arecanut, coffee and rubber if 10 percent of potential area was brought under these crops.

He said this during his visit to Razaphe Resource Center, Chumoukedima.

Ikuto said that agro– climatic conditions suitable for these crops as per the GIS-based survey by the department of Land Resources, was 4,62,500 ha covering all the foothills of the state out of which only 0.23% has been developed fetching an annual income of Rs. 70.75 crore as of 2021 – 22.

He said that arecanut being an eco-friendly crop, the plantation on a commercial scale in the state would benefit the society in the context of challenging issues of climate change.

The advisor said that use of arecanut were manifold and besides nuts, the leaves could replace plastics, and being a shallow-rooted crop, inter-cropping could be suitably done with Coffee where farmers can have two harvests from a plot of land and could fetch double income for the famers.

Cong questions silence of Gov, Speaker on 10 Kuki MLAs demand

IMPHAL, MAY 15: Opposition Congress in Manipur on Monday questioned the reason behind state Governor and Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly remaining silent even as 10 sitting MLAs openly challenge the territorial integrity of Manipur.

Addressing a news conference in Imphal’s C o n g r e s s B h ava n t o day, MPCC president K Meghachandra said that the Congress party was against the joint statement of the 10 MLAs of the ruling parties including two ministers from the BJP demanding a separate administration for the Kukis in Manipur.

The joint statement amounted to disintegrate the territorial integrity of Manipur.

It was not a right step on the part of the Governor and Speaker of Manipur Assembly Speaker

K Meghachandra to remain silent. A suomotu case should be lodged against them and punish them as their acts were unethical.

Meghachandra said that as per the rules and conduct of business of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, the Speaker must take action against these 10 MLAs. He also questioned how the MLAs of the ruling BJP, the party that always shouted for safeguarding and protecting the integrity of the state and its alliance can voice against the party’s commitment.

The MPCC president further expressed the party’s displeasure over the failure to safeguard the life and property of the people by the incumbent government even after 12 days since the violence erupted on May 3 and deployment of thousands of paramilitary forces and army.

“Is the government’s efforts to curb the present conflict with responsibility,” he asked.

Meghachandra further said that the party was displeased with the response of the leaders of BJP government at the Centre to the spate of violence in the state.

Attending the news conference, senior Congress leader and former chief minister OkramI bobi said that the Centre as well as the state government should not take the issue lightly and deal with seriousness.

“Otherwise, things will become worse. All issues can be settled through

dialogue,” he said, while asserting that The Centre has an important role while dealing with the issue of the illegal immigrant in the state.

The former three time chief minister suggested that the government should act as there is still a government instead of handing over the government to the security advisor to the state government.

The leader of the Congress legislator wing also urged the government to deploy an adequate number of Central security forces in the sensitive areas, particularly in the periphery of the valley and hills so that people feel secure.

He also criticized the incumbent government for unable to protect the goods ferrying trucks plying on the national highways even as the Centre had sent more than enough numbers of paramilitary and Army in deal with the prevailing situation in the state.

Two people have been arrested in connection with it. Superintendent of Police in Cachar district, Numal Mahatta, said, “Based on a secret tip-off, we conducted an operation on Sunday and recovered 40,000 Yaba tablets. The operation lasted for more than 12 hours.”

The two arrested were identified as Saharul Islam Mazumder (31) and Samir Hussain Laskar, alias Babul (45). They are residents of the Berenga area in the Cachar district.

Mahatta said, “Mazumder and Laskar were kingpins of drug peddling in urban areas. We are interrogating them to get further details on the network.”

It has been alleged that the southern Assam area is used as a hub for illegal drugs that come from Myanmar via Mizoram.

SHILLONG, MAY 15: Meghalaya’s opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Monday announced its first phase of agitation to mount pressure on the Conrad Sangmaled government to halt the recruitment processes until issues regarding the state job reservation and roster system are resolved.

VPP Spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said the party would stage a sit-in demonstration at the parking lot near the Additional Secretariat on May 17 from 10 am to 4 pm. Myrboh said in view of the adamant attitude and lack of response of the NPP- led MDA 2.0 government to the demand of the party on the need to put on hold all the recruitment process in the state till the state job reservation policy and the implementation of the roster system is reviewed by an expert committee, “The party workers and the public are urged to participate in the protest to put pressure on the NPP-

AIZAWL, MAY 15 (PTI): A 25-year-old man who took 17 bullets during ethnic clashes in Manipur is currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital in neighbouring Mizoram, an official said on Monday.

The victim, identified as Pauginmuan, was brought to Aizawl Civil Hospital from Churachandpur district in the neighbouring state for better medical facilities on Sunday. He took at least 17 bullets fired from a locally made gun when a violent clash occurred at a village on May 3, the official said.

The bullets hit him on the back and neck. Four of these, however, were removed in the Churachandpur district hospital.

Pauginmuan was taken to Aizawl as doctors in Churachandpur said they did not have the required equipment to extract the bullets embedded close to the spinal cord and vascular veins, he said. Efforts are being made to extricate the bullets on Monday, the official said. Pauginmuan, who belonged to the ChinKuki-Mizo tribe, claimed that he and his friends were protecting their village when some armed miscreants attacked them after the Tribal Solidarity March’ ended on May 3.

In a video message, VHP national secretary general Milind Parande said not only churches but temples too have been “destroyed” during the violent clashes between two communities in the state. “The violence in Manipur is deplorable. VHP appeals for peace,” Parande said, adding, “This violence must stop immediately”.

Parande said a “wrong impression” has been created that only churches were damaged in the violence. “Over 40 temples of the Meitei community have also been destroyed in the violence,” he said and cautioned against the spread of “false narrative

NTPC to start study for floating solar plant in Tripura AGARTALA, MAY 15 (PTI): The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ltd will begin a feasibility study for a 130MW floating solar power plant on Dumbur Lake in Tripura’s Gomati district, an official said on Monday.

In the past five years, the northeastern state has increased solar power energy from 4.07 MW to 7.21 MW with the government trying hard to increase renewable energy in a big way.

Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NTPC to carry out the feasibility study for the floating power plant. NTPC operates

a 100-MW floating solar power project at Ramagundam in Telangana.

Under the study, the NTPC will examine the area of the waterbody required to be taken up for the plant, identification of local transfer stations and forest clearance for setting up the state’s first renewable energy plant, TREDA Joint Director Debabrata Sukladas said.

He said the NTPC is expected to complete the feasibility study which will cost Rs 450 crore in a couple of months.

“The proposed 130MW floating power plant is important for the state’s aim of producing 200 MW solar energy by 2030. The state’s average solar power energy’s potentiality stands at 2080 MW. The TREDA,

Tripura State Electricity Corporation (TSECL) and the Tripura Power Generation Company - all are trying hard to tap the solar power energy potential of the state,” Sukladas said.

TREDA has also initiated a process to provide solar power to the interior tribal habitations where conventional power supply is not profitable. “The installation of the solar microgrid has been completed in 17 tribal habitations while work is in progress for 50 more habitations with a cost of Rs 5.70 crore”, he said adding that the Centre has approved a Rs 80 crore project in principle which will cover as many as 274 habitations with solar power.

JAIPUR, MAY 15 (PTI): Flanked by at least 14 other Congress MLAs at a rally here on Monday, dissident leader Sachin Pilot served notice on Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot -– agree to their demands by the month-end or face a statewide agitation.

A case was registered with the cyber police station on Sunday. The complainant, Kuldeep Singh of Madiaon, got a message on his WhatsApp in which the fraudster, posing as the staff of a company offering online jobs of rating movies, asked him to register on a Telegram user ID. The conman then sent photos of the movie and names and asked Singh to give ratings to movies for which he promised to give money.

NEW DELHI, MAY 15 (PTI): The now-scrapped Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was meant to be a “temporary” provision since the beginning and the framers of the Constitution had put it there “intelligently”, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Monday.

Inaugurating a training programme on legislative drafting, Shah also said that if a legislation is drafted well, there is “no need for any court to give any explanation to any law”.

Where no rule is rule

ny government that sincerely believes it has the mandate of the people will not shirk its responsibility to respond to the cry for justice and rule of law heard since the past decades the writ of the legally constituted government has ceased to be effective and instead a world of parallel authorities have exerted their writ through fear and intimidation of unarmed and unorganised people.

Regional political parties in Nagaland beginning with the NpF and later its offshoot, the Ndpp, have been ruling the state since 2003 and during which, the writ of the constitutionally elected government has been greatly compromised as corruption and extortion became the order of the day. The resentment against unabated and illegal taxations were reflected through massive public rallies across Nagaland since 2012. Echoing the same concern of the past decades, the confederation of Nagaland chamber of commerce and Industry(cNccI) has said the business community in dimapur is on the verge of “breakdown” due to unabated and multiple taxations imposed by 18 factions on trade and business. At the press conference at dimapur on May 12, cNccI also demanded to know from the ‘oppo sition-less government’ as to whether these multiple taxations on business are legal or not. It may be recalled that the state government had issued notifications twice –on June 22,2009 and reaffirmed on June 12,2012-banning collections in any form at check gates and highways. The Gauhati High court Kohima Bench had in a landmark judgment on June 3,2014 had banned all collections in any form by cSOs. In 2012 AcAUT Nagaland had organised a rally calling on the government to implement the ban orders by the state government besides a massive rally was organised in 2013 against all forms of collection. confirming the worst that the ruling party /alliance governments are not inclined to act on facts, even the report of the three-member High power committee (Hpc) set up by the government in 2014 to look into illegal collections submitted its report in 2015 has been kept under wraps. These have added to the woes of the citizens besides hampering the economic growth of the state which directly and adversely affect people. It would seem that factions, some of who have “resurrected” in the post-1997 period, have made taxations as the main purpose of their existence. Over and above all illegal taxes, remains another serious issue of monumental corruption in the government. No project in Nagaland can be completed within the budgeted amount since there are many demanding their share of taxes. projects meant to benefit people have been turned into ATMs by corrupt government system as thousands of crore rupees are siphoned off by cost overruns. Blatant corruption has benefitted those in power while extortion has been a boon for parallel authorities. corruption has eroded the principles of governance and in turn severely compromised the writ of the constitutionally mandated government.

When legally constituted governments offer passive resistance on challenges on their authority, it only encourages self-styled authorities to believe they have legitimacy to enforce their writ through threat and use of force. Rampant corruption at government levels, bogus employees, backdoor appointments, siphoning of money, anti-social syndrome and criminal syndicates is the sum total of lack of governance in Nagaland.

God is the Master Designer, and He allows adversities into your life to see if you can jump over them properly— “By my God I can leap over a wall” (Psalm 18:29). God will never shield you from the requirements of being His son or daughter. First Peter 4:12 says, “Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you….”

Rise to the occasion— do what the trial demands of you. It does not matter how much it hurts as long as it gives God the opportunity to manifest the life of Jesus in your body.

May God not find complaints in us anymore, but spiritual vitality— a readiness to face anything He brings our way. The only proper goal of life is that we manifest the Son of God; and when this occurs, all of our dictating of our demands to God disappears. Our Lord never dictated demands to His Father, and neither are we to make demands on God. We are here to submit to His will so that He may work through us what He wants. Once we realize this, He will make us broken bread and poured-out wine with which to feed and nourish others.

Speeches on 72nd anniversary of the Naga Plebiscite Day

Message by (Retd) Gen. Thinoselie M Keyho, President NNC, Kohima My dear citizens of Nagaland, Today, we have stepped into the 73rd year since the Naga people put their thumb impressions in favour of Naga Sovereignty in that historic Voluntary Plebiscite Day on 16th May, 1951. On the occasion of celebrating the 73rd Naga Plebiscite Day today, I convey my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all our Naga people wherever they may be. Let us give thanks to God, the Almighty for piloting us throughout to come this far.

On this auspicious occasion, I am appealing to the conscience of all the Naga people, particularly the elite group to look back with seriousness that we have come this far due to the National Movement under the Naga National Political Institution of ‘Naga National Council’ (NNC) which was formed in 1946 based on the commitment made in the Memorandum to the Simon Commission in 1929 which recorded the truth that Nagas are not Indians and the Naga area is not within the Indian Union.

Let us refresh our mind with what Jawaharlal Nerhu, the first Prime Minister of India said on 19th August, 1946 in connection with the proposal of Robert Reid for creation of Crown Colony, “the tribal areas are defined as being those long frontiers of India which are neither part of India nor Burma, nor Indian States nor of any foreign power. “ This statement itself has confirmed that Nagas are not Indians and their land is not within the Indian Union.

Why a Voluntary Plebiscite was called for?

When the British Government was about to leave this part of the Globe, Nagas have declared their Independence on 14th August, 1947, one day ahead of Indian Independence, and cabled it to the UN which

UN acknowledged and filed it.

But Indian Government without least regards to the historical facts forcefully occupied the areas which were earlier under the then British Government including Nagaland. Therefore, the Naga National Council, under the leadership of the Father of the Nation, A.Z Phizo, in order to demonstrate their stand clear to the Indian people and to the world, decided to conduct a voluntary Plebiscite. And in this Voluntary Plebiscite, Nagas have proved their stand to the world beyond doubt by voting 99.9% in favour of Naga Sovereignty.

And through this Plebiscite, Naga people had given their mandate to the Naga National Council which remains the cornerstone of the National Movement.

On that Plebiscite Day itself, NNC declared that ‘Naga people want peace, Naga people do not want war and they do not want their children to live in battlefields. ‘ They have also made it clear to the Indian brothers and sisters that ‘Nagas are not their enemy. ‘ They were only putting across their right democratically that they are not Indians.

In spite of repeatedly proving our stand as free people beyond doubt, the Indian Government again imposed their first Parliamentary General Elections of 1952 in Nagaland but that was totally rejected by the Naga people on the ground that Nagas are not Indians. In fact, India should feel ashamed for their act of moral violation of conscience.

We all know that 16 Point Agreement was a mischievous deed which was done by deception because the so called agreement was done without the NNC/FGN with absolute mandate for whom the agreement was proposed. Therefore, the agreement brought more bloodshed to the Nagas. Should the Indian

Government takes this as an agreement, why entered into so many agreements again like the Ceasefire Agreement of 1964, the infamous ‘Shillong Accord’ of 1975, the ‘Framework Agreement’ of 2015 and the ‘Agreed Position’ of 2017? How many agreements Indian Government will propose to enter into for solving just one political problem?

Nagas are one nation and people but why we have too many factions today. In a way Nagas have to blame ourselves to some extent but for the real reason behind the screen is we are fragmented into many factions and still some of such talk going on is due to the ‘divide and rule’ policy of the Government of India. It will be our ill luck if Nagas do not realise this play. The Indian leaders bitterly criticised the British Government Policy of ‘divide and rule’ during their pre- Independence period, but today, the Indian secret agencies are playing the same game with the Nagas which they have copied from the Britishers.

It is high time for the Naga leaders to retrospect and reason together and rally under the banner of NNC again to salute the past glories of our patriots and warriors and move forward together for the fulfillment of our aspiration for Naga Sovereignty.

Let me conclude by reminding our people with what NNC President, A. Z. Phizo says in his Plebiscite Day speech at Kohima on 16th May 1951- “We want to make our country a place of happiness, of security and of rest. We hope and we cherish that we can make our country a meeting place of the East and an understanding centre of the world. Above anything else, we want to be free as a distinct nation and we shall be free.”

Dear Naga people, On this occasion of Naga National Plebiscite Day, I on behalf of the NNC (Parent Body) wish all the Naga people and the national workers in particular. Seventy-two years ago on this day, the Naga people conducted a National Plebiscite (referendum) in the presence of the Government of India, to demonstrate and put forth the fate of the Nagas to be a free and sovereign people and nation, for peace and development.

Today as a sovereign people and nation we celebrate this historic National Day. And we call for the Government of India to officially recognise this democratic right of freedom, As this sovereign right is renowned by the world at large and particularly the Government of India. After more than 7 decades of fighting with blood, sweat, tears and immense suffering the Nagas at this point ought to be recognised as a sovereign nation, and therefore we urge all the friendly countries near and far to officially recognise Nagaland as a democratic nation.

We also remember and honour our national workers who sacrificed their lives for the purpose of Nagaland to be a free and independent nation.

History is certain that Nagas are not Indians and Nagaland as a whole was never politically a part of India. It is very apparent even to outsiders that Nagas are distinct and different from India, and many leaders, officials and tourists who visit Nagaland also recognise and acknowledge this fact.

The Naga people cannot continue to stay under the forceful occupation of India and Myanmar (Burma) as we are historically and rightfully a sovereign people and nation.

Today, we are witnessing communal violence and chaos designed by the imperialist political agents in the North-east region to self-destruct so as to occupy and dominate the

region entirely, as we can see through the events taking place in Manipur.

The raging and flaming situation in Manipur is an eye-opener and an actual example for all the people in the region and the world at large. All these are the outcome of the crafty agenda of ethnic cleansing by the imperialist and it is a huge threat and danger to the indigenous people in the North-east region.

The unimaginable and unforgettable communal havoc is created based on the religious agenda of the extremists, Therefore, the North-East people must comprehend this clearly to save ourselves and the region.

The political parties of India will come and go, a party will rule for a period of time and go, and a particular party cannot permanently rule in this contemporary world, therefore, the political party of any colour must not fool the North-east people as we have seen through and enough in the past. And we the North-East Indigenous people must stand united to fight and overcome the imperialist policy and agenda, and to protect our political rights of freedom to rule ourselves for the betterment and development of our region and also for peace and tranquillity to prevail in the entire North-east region.

As for the Nagas in the Homeland, we need to be cautious and aware of all these ethnic cleansing pursuits happening around us, and we must be united to confront all political, religious and land domination agendas of the imperialist so as to overcome all challenges in the days to come for freedom of our Homeland.

In conclusion, I must say that those factions who have already compromised the Naga People’s sovereign rights of Freedom as a people and Nation must step down voluntarily and stop being a hindrance to the freedom that our leaders and people stood for. Praise the Lord- Nagaland for Christ.

Message by Senka Ao, President, NNC My dear Naga brothers and sisters, I greet you all in the name of our Almighty God. It gives me immense pleasure and pride to address you all on this historic day of the Nagas. It was on this day in 1951 that the Nagas under the aegis of the Naga National Council boldly stated, openly expressed and exhibited to the world the desire and aspiration of the Naga people to live as a free and sovereign nation; made a solemn and irrevocable pledge of the desire and the right to determine our own future, popularly known as the PLEBISCITE of May 16, 1951. A remarkable feature of the PLEBISCITE was the overwhelming 99.9% in favour of Naga Independence which today stands as a testimony of the unity of the Nagas and the Nagas’ affirmation of the Memorandum to the Simon Commission of 1929 as well as the declaration of Naga Independence on 14th August, 1947.

It conveys a strong twin-message: the spirit and aspirations of the Naga people and the resentment against the forceful occupation by India and the territorial division of the Naga inhabited areas without the knowledge and consent of our people. We celebrate this historic day to contemplate as to why we have a sense of pride and think ourselves fortunate to be Nagas and also to rededicate ourselves to

pursue the Naga National Cause with renewed vigour and vitality.

Nagas from the very beginning have always been fierce lovers of equality and freedom. Our ancestors believed that equality and freedom are unquestionable values and principles by which people should live by and live for. Each village was a sovereign republic and enjoyed unquestionable freedom and no matter how powerful a village was, it did not have the intention or desire to conquer other villages, threaten other villages into submission or to rule or dominate over other villages. We lack even the colonial-imperial vocabularies like “submission” or “surrender”.

It is no doubt true that powerful or mother villages were recognised in terms of certain nominal tax or tribute, however, the practice was more of recognition either of their political leadership or for customary roles rather than surrender of their autonomy. The autonomy and freedom of any Naga village was non-negotiable and inalienable.

The NNC was democratically formed by the Naga representatives on 2nd February 1946, based on clear identity of God’s creation of the Naga race, history, tradition and culture; as a Political Institution on the Principle of Non-Violence and has always sought to resolve all issues through democratic

and constitutional means. The Plebiscite was conducted under the leadership of the fourth President of NNC, A. Z. Phizo, the Father of the Naga Nation. In his Plebiscite Speech the policy of non-violence is explicitly outlined by the Father of the Nation, when he says: “Most of the histories of human freedom were recorded in human blood. Most of the foundations of free nations were built on human bones and crushed skulls. But we want our national independence to be holy and pure. We do not want to mix our freedom, and our independence with human blood.

We are determined to extricate ourselves clear with understanding, by goodwill and through reason, so that we may continue to live in freedom and enjoy national independence.”

The Naga Plebiscite of 1951 expresses the Naga aspiration in the clearest term, it was a political statement and declaration of our aspiration and that the Naga National Movement is a peoples’ movement for liberation. The Plebiscite was more than a declaration, it was an oath. Some gave their thump impression with blood.

This was to show their utmost seriousness, that it is a matter of life and death. It may be recalled that oath is the final judgment in our traditional context. The Plebiscite

was necessitated in the first place due to the nature and failure of Nagas’ relationship with India.

Our ancestors were honorable people and their word was their law. The British recognized this custom and treated the Nagas as honorable people. Despite several conflicts and agreements between the two, no written document was necessitated. But when the Indian leaders made the first agreement with the Nagas, they neither honored our customs nor their promises. We had to make a written agreement - the 9 point agreement (Hydari agreement).

Even after getting written assurance from the representatives of the Government of India, a letter signed by Bordoloi and Hydari themselves, the agreement never saw the light of day. Moreover, successive Indian leaders failed to uphold even the promises made to the Nagas by their most venerated leaders like Gandhi and Rajagopalachari.

These were extremely valuable lessons for the Nagas. It made us to wonder what we are up against, a people whose honor is questionable. In short, the Naga experiences of betrayal and treachery by the Indian leaders was educative; the NNC had to recourse to extreme measures, we had to mobilize ourselves for a political action, to empower ourselves; this realization

necessitated the plebiscite.

The commemoration of the Plebiscite Day gives us an opportunity to ponder on our foundational and fundamental beliefs and principles, the legitimate right of the Nagas to choose our own destiny and also bring to the attention of the world that the Nagas still continue to suffer against her will in the imperialistic hands of occupational forces, viz., India and Myanmar. Modern civilization with its values, including democratic values have unfortunately till date failed to truly educate these occupational forces that no people group, big or small, can be forced to live under the domination of another against his/her desire. In spite of our unfulfilled dream and aspiration to live as a free nation, we still remain proud and continue to live with dignity because on this day, more than Seven Decades ago, the Naga people boldly stood up to express our resentment against the dehumanizing practice of imperialism.

May the Almighty God who guided our people in the past and gave us courage to so boldly declare to the world continue to guide our path and instil the same desire in each one of us today as we celebrate and commemorate the Naga Plebiscite Day. KUKNALIM

Is loneliness really as damaging to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day?

ivek Murthy, the US surgeon general, recently warned that “being socially disconnected” has a similar effect on mortality as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. This statement was widely reported in the media, including in the Washington Post, the Times and the Daily Mail. But where does this “15 cigarettes a day” figure come from?

Dr Murthy is referring to a study published in 2010 that explored social relationships and mortality rates. The researchers combined the data from 148 studies on the topic, in what is known as a “meta-analysis”, to arrive at a more robust statistical answer to their questions.

The meta-analysis contained data on 300,000 par-

ticipants who were studied for an average of seven and a half years. The researchers explored the extent to which social relationships can influence the risk of premature death, the aspects of social relationships that are most likely to predict an early death, and any factors that mitigate the risk.

They concluded that lonely people are 50% more likely to die prematurely than people with strong social relationships. They then used a statistical tool called “random effects models” to compute that the influence of social relationships on the risk of death is comparable to well-established risk factors for death, such as smoking cigarettes.

Although the method-

ology the researchers used was sound – and loneliness is certainly damaging for health – it could be argued that the “equivalent to 15 cigarettes a day” analogy is sensationalist.

The researchers also pointed out that the health risks of loneliness are similar to alcohol consumption (more than six drinks a day) and exceed other risk factors, such as physical inactivity and obesity. Yet these comparisons are rarely mentioned in the media or keynote speeches as they don’t have the same impact as smoking.

The smoking comparison also has the potential to add to the burden of people who feel lonely and exacerbate the stigma associated with loneliness. However, the

effectiveness of the analogy cannot be underestimated.

Thirteen years on, the paper continues to raise awareness about loneliness and the associated damaging health consequences.

Studies that didn’t grab the headlines Other studies that are just as robust, but perhaps fail to grab the headlines in the same way, have likewise shown a range of health conditions associated with loneliness and social isolation, including heart disease and stroke, type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. Even recovery following heart surgery can be compromised by isolation.

Mental health conditions can also be triggered by loneliness, including loss of

hope, depression, problems with sleep, alcohol abuse and other psychiatric disorders. Lonely people also have heightened sensitivity to social threat. It is believed loneliness has an evolutionary function that is felt in a similar way to hunger or thirst and is a signal to people to change their lifestyle and social connections. However, when loneliness becomes chronic it can be different to break out of and for people to know how to overcome the negative feelings they are experiencing.

Loneliness is also associated with an increased risk of developing dementia.

The number of people experiencing loneliness increased sharply during

the pandemic, including among young adults. The pandemic also accelerated societal transformations, such as remote working and online shopping, that have exacerbated the loneliness epidemic.

The need to address loneliness is further heightened by its costs to health services, businesses and economies. The annual cost of loneliness to the UK economy and UK private sector employers could be as high as £32 billion and £2.5 billion respectively.

So, while Dr Murthy is correct – loneliness can harm your health as much as smoking – there are also many other ways of measuring its harmful impacts.

“I don’t have any MLAs, I don’t know what MLAs opinion is...I have 135 MLAs and one associate member, so we have totally 136 MLAs now, they are Congress party MLAs... we have passed a resolution that we have authorised the high command. The high command will take the decision,” he said.

T H I RU VA N A N T H A PURAM, MAY 15 (PTI): The ruling CPI(M) in Kerala on Monday took a veiled dig at the Congress by asking it to safeguard its newly elected Karnataka MLAs from being poached by the BJP as was allegedly done by the saffron party in Goa amidst the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Terming the Congress as being weak and incapable of taking on the BJP on its own, the CPI(M) batted for a state-wise alliance to defeat the saffron party in the 2024 general elections.

“A national-level alliance will not be helpful. We need to unite all the antiBJP groups at the state-level and defeat the BJP in each state. That is the only way forward,” CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan said.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had suggested a similar strategy a day ago.

Govindan said the contention that Congress was the only party capable of taking on the BJP was “only

an argument”.

“Everyone who knows Congress, knows that Karnataka was the only state where they could contest polls effectively. The other states where they can are Gujarat, Rajasthan and some similar states.

“But there too, the Congress is in a weak position. Even now, they have internal conflicts,” he contended.

The CPI(M) state secretary said the Congress should focus on deciding a Chief Minister and cabinet ministers for Karnataka while remaining careful and vigilant against any alleged attempts by the BJP to poach their MLAs. “Everyone knows that the BJP has the wherewithal to buy MLAs. It happened in Goa amidst the then ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra,” he said.

The CPI(M) leader was referring to the crossing over of eight of the 11 Congress MLAs in Goa in September last year to the ruling BJP in the western state just months after the Assembly elections were held there.

Govindan asser ted that the BJP was the biggest threat and the people want to defeat it. Therefore, all anti-BJP groups should come together to defeat it as one, he said.

CHITRADURGA (KARNATAKA), MAY 15 (PTI): A video of a group of villagers in this district on Monday allegedly refusing to pay their electricity bill citing the pre-poll promise of the Congress to give 200 units for free has gone viral. Among the five ‘guarantees’ that the party announced is the offer of 200 units of power a month to every household.

During campaigning for the May 10 Assembly elections in Karnataka, the Congress repeatedly said it would give a stamp of approval for these ‘guarantees’ in the maiden cabinet meeting on the first day of it assuming power in the State.

“We won’t pay,” a villager was heard telling electricity bill collector Gopi in the purported video where people are seen sitting on a platform under a peepal tree.

The bill collector then tells them, “You have to pay the bill this month. Let’s see what the government says,” to which the villagers respond, “What can the government say?”

Gopi tells them if the government says it will give free power, then the electricity department will follow suit. “We will not pay.

They (Congress) have said electricity is free, it will be free only,” another villager replies.

SIKAR (RAJ), MAY 15 (PTI): Senior BJP leader and Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday asserted that votes are won on the basis of “politics of service” rather than on “posters and banners”.

He said he has now decided that he will not put up any posters or offer tea to people in his constituency in the next election as “those who have to vote will vote and those who do not will not”.

At the same time, he exuded confidence in increasing his winning margin in the next poll.

Gadkari was addressing a programme on the death anniversary of former vice president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat at Khachariyawas village in Sikar district of Rajasthan.

“I have fought the election in a very tough constituency. Everyone had asked me not to contest from there, but I fought with determination. Now I have decided that in the next election, I will not put up posters or banners, will not give tea or do anything else. Those who have to vote will vote and those who do not will not,” he said.

The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways said the concept of “politics of service” was brought in by RSS ideologue Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, and that he defined his politics on this concept.

“The biggest problem of politics is the emptiness of ideas. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat stayed with principles and never compromised with his ideology.

Politics for Shekhawat was a medium to serve people and an instrument for socioeconomic reform,” he said.

Gadkari, who represents Nagpur constituency, said the ‘politics of service’ does not come with talks, books or research, but with actions and deeds.

He said the work on the Delhi-Jaipur electric highway is on and when electric buses will run, the ticket cost will be Rs 30 lesser to the (present) fare.

Stands by 2021 Parl reply that SEBI probing Adani cos: FinMin

NEW DELHI, MAY 15 (PTI): As a political row erupted over SEBI telling Supreme Court that it has not been probing the Adani group since 2016, the Finance Ministry on Monday said it stands by its July 2021 written reply in Parliament that had stated that the stock market regulator was investigating some Adani group companies.

Court to strengthen its case for a six-month extension of the deadline to complete the probing allegations of fraud and money laundering against Adani Group, Congress and other opposition parties cited the finance ministry’s July 2021 replies in Parliament to ask who was misleading. “The government stands by its reply in Lok Sabha on 19th July 2021 to Q. No. 72, which was based on due

diligence and inputs from all concerned agencies,” the Finance Ministry tweeted.

This was in response to Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh posting a screenshot of the written reply made by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary on July 19, 2021.

In the reply, the Minister stated that “SEBI is investigating some Adani Group companies with re-

gard to compliance with SEBI regulations. Further, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) is investigating certain entities belonging to the Adani Group of companies under laws administered by it. He had gone on to state that Enforcement Directorate was not carrying out any investigation and that “SEBI had vide order dated January 16, 2016, directed depositories to freeze particular ben-

Exports fall for 3rd consecutive month by 12.7 pc

NEW DELHI, MAY 15 (PTI): India’s exports contracted by 12.7 per cent, third month in a row, to USD 34.66 billion in April even as the trade deficit reduced to a 20-month low of USD 15.24 billion, the government data showed on Monday.

The decline in exports is mainly on account of poor demand in India’s key destinations -- the Europe and the US -- and it may take some more months for the situation to improve.

Rising for the second straight day, the 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 317.81 points or 0.51 per cent to settle at 62,345.71, the highest closing level since December 14. During the day, it rallied 534.77 points or 0.86 per cent to 62,562.67.

The broader NSE Nifty gained 84.05 points or 0.46 per cent to end at 18,398.85 points, a level not seen since December 20, 2022.

NEW DELHI, MAY 15 (PTI): Wholesale prices in India fell for the first time in almost three years in April, as softening global commodity prices brought down food, fuel, and other input costs for producers.

WPI inflation has been on a declining trend for the last 11 months and came in at (-) 0.92 per cent in April.

This is the lowest level of wholesale price index (WPI) since June 2020, when inflation was at (-) 1.81 per cent. A negative WPI inflation, technically termed as deflation, means that overall wholesale prices have been falling year-onyear. S A N A A , M AY 1 5 (IANS): A total of 392 Yemeni citizens were evacuated from Sudan and have safely returned home in the past 24 hours, state media reported on Monday. The country’s national carrier, Yemenia, operated two flights to facilitate the citizens’ repatriation, reports Xinhua news agency. The first flight, carrying 197 citizens, arrived in the southern port city of Aden on Sunday. TORONTO, MAY 15 (PTI): A Canadian man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for the 2021 killing of a 23-year-old Sikh from India in the country’s Nova Scotia province, media reports said. Prabhjot Singh Katri was stabbed to death by 21-year-old Cameron James Prosper in an unprovoked attack outside an apartment building in Truro town of the province in September 2021. A Nova Scotia judge on Friday sentenced Prosper to nine years in jail for manslaughter, The Global News reported on Saturday.

DIMAPUR: Deputy commissioner, Tuensang, Nokchasashi inaugurated the two-day Tribal Artisans Mela on May 15 at Town Hall Tuensang. The mela was organized by Tribal Co-operative Marketing Development of India Ltd (TRIFED) in collaboration with district administration of Tuensang.

In his inaugural

speech, DC Tuensang thanked the ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India for organizing the event the first of its kind in the district. He said handicrafts and handlooms were mainly based at the Village level in Nagaland, and therefore expressed hope that the mela will brings opportunities to the local artisan not only to

showcase their work but also to open a window of opportunity to sell their products worldwide.

CHANDIGARH, MAY 15 (IANS): The traditional martial art of Punjab, Gatka is poised to get a significant boost nationwide as the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially included this sport in the 37th National Games 2023, scheduled to be held in Goa in October, the game promoters said on Monday.

Gatka as a modern sporting discipline is a standardised style of stick fighting between two or more opponents.

AHMEDABAD, MAY 15 (PTI): Shubman Gill hit his maiden IPL century as Gujarat Titans became the first team to seal a place in the play-offs of the ongoing edition with a convincing 34-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad here on Monday.

Gill slammed 101 off just 58 balls with the help of 13 fours and one six, and added 147 runs for the second wicket with Sai Sudharsan (47 off 36 balls), to power GT to 188 for nine despite a late comeback by Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar (5/30).

With the bat, SRH were never in the hunt as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals to be restricted to 154 for nine.

Heinrich Klaasen (66 off 44) played a lone hand for SRH, while Mohammed Shami (4/21) and Mohit Sharma (4/28) picked up four wickets apiece to shine with the ball for GT. SRH were off to a disastrous start, losing the wickets of Anmolpreet Singh, Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi inside the third over, with the scoreboard reading just 12.

ROME, MAY 15 (IANS): After battling his way into the last 16 of the Italian Open, Novak Djokovic said that rivalries with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray have made him stronger in the face of difficult circumstances.

Djokovic, the top seed and defending champion, moved into the last 16 of the Italian Open but had to work hard, winning against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 on Sunday.

“Luckily for me in my career, I managed to win more matches than those that I lost when I was facing difficult circumstances.

NEW DELHI, MAY 15 (PTI): The protesting wrestlers on Monday decided to make their “agitation global” by approaching Olympic medallists and athletes from other countries and warned that if their demand for the arrest of former national federation (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is not heeded to, a “big call” will be taken after May 21.

She alleged that some elements tried to tarnish their protest on Sunday night and also said that the wrestlers were being stalked

at the protest site. “Some people tried to disrupt our protest. People make recording and click photos... and when we tell them (to stop), they do not listen. Some unknown people (women) also tried to sleep here (inside the tent put up by wrestlers),” Vinesh said.

“Women, whom we don’t know are being sent inside at night... things are being done, which we do not want should happen at the protest site... which bring a bad name and tarnish our fight for truth and justice.”

She also said the wrestlers will not just confine themselves to the protest site but also try to make every citizen in the country aware of their plight.

“We are getting a feeling at Jantar Mantar that we are being restricted and pushed into a corner.

So the more we agitate at other places and let the people elsewhere also know, the better.

Italian Open: Alcaraz stunned by Hungarian qualifier Marozsan

ROME, MAY 15 (AP): Carlo Alcaraz’s 12-match winning streak came to an unexpected end when he was beaten by 135th-ranked Hungarian qualifier Fabian Marozsan 6-3, 7-6 (4) Monday in the third round of the Italian Open.

Alcaraz had won consecutive clay-court titles in Barcelona and Madrid and secured a return to the No. 1 ranking by winning the opening match of his Rome debut. But the 20-year-old Spaniard appeared surprised by how Marozsan dictated with spectacular play all over the court, including a series of drop shots that Alcaraz had no answer for.

The result means that Alcaraz will go into the French Open — which starts in less than two weeks and where he will be the top seed — coming off a dispiriting defeat.

It was only the second

loss on clay for Alcaraz this year after getting beaten by Cameron Norrie in the Rio de Janeiro final in February.

Making matters even more surprising was that this is the first time Marozsan is playing in the main draw of an ATP tournament — and the match took place before a full stadium on Campo Centrale. Alcaraz established a 4-1 lead in the tiebreaker but then Marozsan won six straight points to close it out.

Late in the second set, Alcaraz started yelling “Vamos” every time he won a significant point. But Marozsan just kept coming, unleashing an 82 mph (132 kph) backhand winner up the line to conclude one point and winning several close exchanges at the net.

By the end, Marozan had compiled twice as many winners as Alcaraz, 24 to 12, and far fewer unforced errors, 13 to 24. Marozsan will next face Borna Coric, who continued his solid form on clay by beating Roberto Carballes Baena 7-6 (3), 6-1. At the Madrid Open last week, Coric reached the semifinals before losing to Alcaraz.
