The prime minister cautioned the countrymen against complacency over the country’s achieve-ments in the last 75 years, and said it has to now focus its strength on fulfilling the “Panch Pran” in the next 25 years in the run up to the centenary of its independence. He spelt out the five pledges as a resolve for a developed India; removing any trace of the colonial mindset; taking pride in our legacy; our strength

“We have to move forward with these five resolves in mind and take up the responsibility to fulfil the dreams of our freedom fighters in the next 25 years when we attain 100 years of inde-pendence.”

A thick security cover was thrown at the main Independence event in the national capital and also in several parts of the country. The Red Fort was also decked up in tricolours, flowers and murals depicting key events that led up to India’s freedom. At the start of his address, he paid tributes to freedom fighters and leaders from across the polit-ical spectrum for their contributions to the independence struggle and nation-building.

KO H I M A , AU G 1 5 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio has urged upon the people to remain patient and accommodative vis-à-vis a final solution to the protracted Naga political issue.

Speaking after unfurling the national flag to mark India’s 76th Independence Day at Secretariat Plaza here on Monday, Rio also appealed to all political groups to heed to the voice of the people and “rise above all differences” for an immediate solution.

Rio said as Naga people have been expecting early solution that was early inclusive, honourable and acceptable solution, all legislators representing people had come together and stated in clear terms that they were willing to pave way once the solution was achieved.

Rio also claimed that all elected members have been actively facilitating solution by urging the negotiating parties to realise the long-standing dream of the people without any delay.

Rio expressed the hope that the “negotiating” parties would continue their hard work till all issues were resolved. Extending greetings on the occasion of the Independence Day, Rio said India achieved independence after a long struggle.

He paid tributes to the freedom fighters who gave their all to free their motherland.

Rio said after the British left India weak and debilitated in 1947, the nation had overcome all the challenges and grown from strength to strength to become a proud, strong and confident nation.

He said the dream of the founding fathers of India will be achieved with determination and hard work by the people of the great nation. He urged upon every citizen of Nagaland to rededicate themselves to continue working for making their State one of the

most developed and progressive States in the country.

The chief minister said Nagaland has made good progress along with the rest of the country since 1963 and lauded successive governments for their contributions towards the development of Nagaland. He said the successive governments had redoubled efforts to harness the talents of people by providing them a supportive and a facilitative environment by way of better infrastructure and services. Resultantly, he mentioned that there had been a significant improvement in the lives of people.

Rio also highlighted various progress made by government departments and assured that his government will continue to make efforts so that the fruits of development and progress reached everyone, particularly “the last man in the line”.

State JD(U) to protest demanding early ULB polls

JDU unit general secretary Kitoho S Rotokha stated that since the assembly elections was due by February 2023, it was “very exigent” that ULB polls are held within this year. However, since the government

was unmoved, JD(U) state unit said it has decided to launch phase-wise agitation.

As part of phase-I, party would launch a poster campaign from August 16, 2022. In this regard, the JD(U) Nagaland has appealed to “all conscious citizens” to extend cooperation.

‘Look inward’: Oppn slams PM over I-Day speech

NEW DELHI, AUG 15 (AGENCIES): Moments after Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech urged people to fight “parivarvad”, the opposition parties including Congress reacted very sharply saying the BJP, too, has many dynasts and that nepotism is not possible in electoral politics as the leaders will have to secure the mandate of the people.

“Dynasty has now become the BJP’s internal problem,” said Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera.

“Is Modi’s attack against his own ministers and their

children,” he asked, referring to Modi’s speech. In his address, the PM said the two big challenges before the country were nepotism and dynasty, and corruption, asserting that “we have to fight” against these together.

Khera said that August 15 was not the day to talk about politics, but blamed the Prime Minister for making changes in the established norms.

Congress leader Alka Lamba hit out at the Centre for fighting the “one family”. In a tweet, she said the central government was fighting only one family,

which is fighting against inflation and unemployment.

TMC MP Saugata Roy also responded to PM Modi’s nepotism charge saying the BJP has leaders like Jyotiraditya Scindia who comes from a political family, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s son is an MLA. He also said Home Minister Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah is in a powerful position.

“His talk on dynasty politics sounds hollow as there is a long list of dynasties within the BJP and others that the BJP has imported from other parties. When he talks about dynastic politics

why does he forget about it’s own dynasties like Piyush Goyal, Anurag Thakur and even those like Suvendu Adhikari, who joined from other parties,” questioned Congress national spokesperson, Shama Mohamed.

The opposition also pointed out leaders who come from political families like former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje’s son, Dushyant Singh, a BJP MP. Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai son of former CM, BR Bommai; Punjab leader Sunil Jakhar and former minister of state for home, R.P.N. Singh.

D I M A P U R , AU G 1 5 (NPN): Along with the entire country, Dimapur celebrated the 76th Independence Day with patriotic fervour at Dimapur District Sport Complex (DDSC) Stadium on Monday.

Delivering speech on the occasion, advisor for power, H Tovihoto Ayemi, stated 75 years in the history of a nation was an important milestone, adding that Nagaland has also, along with rest of the country, made progress.

Ever since the State was inaugurated in 1963, the advisor said successive governments have contrib-

uted towards development efforts. Resultantly, he said there was a significant improvement in lives of Nagas, but Nagas remained mindful of the unresolved issues.

Speaking on the ongoing Naga political issue, Ayemi said that Nagas have been waiting patiently and expectantly for a final solution to the Naga Political Issue.

He said that Naga people wanted early, inclusive, honourable and acceptable solution.

Speaking on the achievements of power department, the advisor noted that the state was consistently moving towards ensuring stable power supply throughout the State with the power department taking up and completing construction of several sub-

stations.

He informed that department of power was taking up three hydro projects—Lower Tizu Hydro Electricity Project (42 MW), Zungki Hydro Electricity Project (24 MW) and Tizu Valley (24 MW)— as part of Externally Aided Projects through Asian Development Bank.

Advisor said that issues connected with 186 MW Hydro Electricity Project at Dikhu were also getting resolved.

D I M A P U R , AU G 1 5 (NPN): As part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mohatsav’ celebration to commemorate 75 years of India’s Independence, Rs. 1.31 crores loan from Nagaland Rural Bank was awarded to 75 Self Help Groups (SHGs) under Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission.

The cheque was handed over to NSRLM-SHGs by chief minister Neiphiu Rio during the Independence Day celebration at the Secretariat Plaza, Kohima on August 15.

The bank credit will support SHGs and their households in taking up income generating activities covering Farm Livelihoods, (Cont’d on p-8) Non-Farm livelihoods and

in the State. Further, Ayemi informed that presently work was in progress for small Hydro project at Diliumroi (2.4 MW) while the Ponglefo project would be commissioned very soon.

He said that the department was also aiming for reduction of AT&C losses and increase in revenue collection by installation of prepaid meters in Dimapur and Kohima.

Advisor informed that the first major solar power plant with a capacity of 5 MW was coming up at Hovukhu Village under Niuland, which was expected to be completed within this financial year.

Non-Timber Forest Produce (NTFP) Micro-enterprises. This will also foster the national goal of creating “Lakhpati SHG Women” to enable SHG women to earn at least Rs. 1 lakh per annum.

According to DIPR, the credit linkage will continue to become an annual event, thereby enhancing the State Rural Livelihoods Mission’s effort towards building the credit¬worthiness of rural women in Nagaland.

It may be mentioned that the State Mission has also created an SHG corpus of more than Rs. 160 crore, which remains as a collective fund at the community level, and had also accessed Rs. 28.41 crore through bank credit till date.

Mhathung inaugurates SDH office at Sanis

DIMAPUR: Advisor for Horticulture & Border Affairs, Mhathung Yanthan on Monday, inaugurated the sub-division horticulture (SDH) office at Sanis under Wokha district.

At the programme, Mhathung urged upon the department to let the people enjoy the fruit and to let the aspirations of the people to be fulfilled through the dedication of the department’s officials.

He said the government was dedicated under the vision and determination of chief minister Neiphiu Rio to build the economy of the society through various agricultural and farming programmes, however, he said less could be achieved due to the pandemic.

56 under trial prisoners released in Nagaland DIMAPUR: A total of 56 under trial prisoners (UTPs) from Central Jail and 10 district jails in Nagaland were released under the “campaign for the release of prisoners” by Under Trial Review Committees (UTRCs) to commemorate Indian Independence Day. In a press release, PRA, Nagaland State Legal Services Auhtority (NSLSA), Ketholeno Neihu informed that the district level UTRC committees headed by district & sessions judge, with district magistrate, superintendent of police, secretary, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and officer in charge of prisons as members conducted 35 UTRC meetings during the period of July 16 to August 13.

Through this campaign, the National Legal Services Authority (NLSA) along with the NSLSA and DLSAs identified prisoners eligible to be considered by UTRC and reviewed all eligible cases of prisoners during a series of meetings and recommended for release of such cases that the UTRC took up for consideration.

The DLSAs were directed to urgently file bail or appropriate applications through panel lawyers for all prisoners recommended for release by UTRC. During the exercise, 147 UTPs in the state were recommended for release on bail by the committee and 56 UTPs were released on the recommendation of the UTRCs from the 11 prisons (1 Central Jail 10 district jails excluding Longleng).

Out of the UTPs released, 20 were from Mon district Jail, nine from Dimapur Central and district jail, seven from Wokha district Jail, five each from Kohima district jail and Longleng district (under Mokokchung district Jail, Longleng jail yet to function), four from Zunheboto, three Kiphire, two Tuensang and one from Mokokchung. No UTPs were discharged from Phek and Peren district jail after recommendation.

The campaign was launched on July 16 with formal launch of NALSA’s campaign release UTRC@75.

The UTRCs were released under 13 categories of cases which included UTPs/convicts falling covered under Section 436A CrPC; UTPs released on bail by the court, but have not been able to furnish sureties; UTPs accused of compoundable offences; UTPs eligible under Section 436 of CrPC; UTPs who may be covered under Section 3 of the Probation of Offenders Act, namely accused of offence under Sections 379, 380, 381, 404, 420 IPC or alleged to be an offence not more than 2 years imprisonment.

UTPs who have become eligible to be released on bail under some sections; UTPs who are imprisoned for offences which carry a maximum punishment of 2 years; UTPs who are detained under Chapter VIII of the CrPC 107, I 08.

109 and 151; sick or infirmed UTPs and require specialized medical treatment; women offenders; first time offenders between the ages 19-21 years and in custody with less than seven years of imprisonment; unsound mind and must be dealt with Chapter XXV of the code.

NGTC condemns Aug 9 hit-and-run incident DIMAPUR: Nagaland Garo Tribal Council (NGTC) has strongly condemned the hit and run incident, which occurred at 3rd mile, Chümoukedima on August 9, where late Leya Engtipi Sangma succumbed on the spot.

In a condemnation note, NGTC joint secretary Cliff Sangma appealed to the responsible authorities to give the culprit befitting punishment as per the law for his “inhumane behaviour”.

The culprit instead of having any remorse for his misdeeds fled from the scene without giving any help, according to the eye witness, NGTC stated.

Further, the council expressed its gratitude to Vika Yeptho of Eralibill village for his quick presence of mind and bravery in chasing and nabbing the culprit. It also conveyed condolences to the bereaved family members and payed that God would grant them strength to bear with the loss.

A veterinar y team from the hospital has been conducting free anti-rabies vaccination drives at various part of Kohima since the past few months.

On Monday, the veterinary team led by vet-

erinary surgeon, Dr. Elizabeth Yhome organised a free vaccination drive at the hospital premises during which, people from all parts of the city brought their pets to be administered with the vaccination.

Vaccination cards were issued to dogs that were vaccinated while free treatment on other health issues was also carried out.

The team informed that such drives would be organised in parts of the city which were yet to be

covered.

The drive has been organised to prevent rabies transmission among dogs and also from dog to human as people rear dogs and keep them in close proximity, which, if not vaccinated, may cause health issues.

Although there has been no record of a rabies outbreak in recent times, the quest to keep humans, pet dogs and cats safe and secure has been a continued effort.

He pointed out that Nagas must come as one on the original principle of 1929 memorandum and 1951 plebiscite, a political referendum for permanent solution.

Further, he said under the leadership of acting president Yilow, vice president Zihongba Yimchunger and general secretary V. Nagi, NNC hoped and requested that all the factions of Naga “national” groups would reconcile and unitedly create one political platform of which the government of India cannot deny but grant Nagas their “national” rights.

M o yo n S t u d e n t s ’ Union Shillong (MSUS) president, Nonwarngam Chisi said the Naga vision was “to live in a united Naga nation”, which has been “denied by the oppressors”.

He reminded the youth to be prepared for the fulfilment of Naga vision, which was the “birth right” of Nagas.

“The unique history,

culture and world views of the Nagas is what fuels the journey to freedom, although it may be currently separated by political boundaries and united by blood and boundaries which is beyond boundaries” he stated.

Earlier, the celebration was hosted by Teranshel Tontang from Uipo (Khoibu) Students’ Union Shillong and was attended

by Khasi Students’ Union

(KSU) and Naga Post Graduate Students Council Committee.

At the programme, short speeches were delivered by Zeliangrong Students’ Union Shillong, president Ab. Dizinbou and Khasi Students’ Union general secretary Bah Donald. Poumai Christian Fellowship, Shillong, chaplain Rokheda Mahraomai offered invocation, the flag was hoisted by chief guest

along with NSUS president Imeka Zhehoto Awomi accompanied by Naga national anthem led by the Chakhesang Students Union, Shillong and a minute of silence was paid to Naga martyrs.

NSUS encourages youth to realise ‘common Naga destiny’: Naga Students’ Union Shillong (NSUS) celebrated “Naga Independence Day” on the theme, “Unite et Regnabit” (Unite and Reign) at Don Bosco Technical Institute, Shillong with Naga Hoho (NH) president H.K. Zhimomi as chief guest.

In a press release, NSUS informed that during the programme, H.K Zhimomi narrated the historic events of Naga

struggle in order to educate the Naga youth in Shillong so that they would not “get confused by divisive policies employed to divide the Naga nation.”

Zhimomi said Nagas have embraced Christianity as a collective religion and must embody the virtues of a Christian.

He said Nagas were called to be free but were “forcefully captured by the Indian forces”.

Mokokchung: The 76th Independence Day concluded in Mokokchung at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex with minister for Rural Development & SIRD, Metsübo Jamir unfurling the national flag.

Upon his arrival, the minister unfurled the tricolour and inspected the parade.

Before delivering the Independence Day message, he took rashtriya salute from the parade contingents. He also handed over district awards to the recipients.

The programme was followed by cultural presentations that included Cultural Club, Khensa, pipe band display by 23 Assam rifles and an exhibition tug of war between All Ward Union Mokokchung vs Mokokchung Town GB Union.

Metsübo also inaugurated the exhibition stalls set up by ATMA and Agri & Allied departments and district administration. He also inaugurated the basketball court at Imkongmeren Sports Complex.

Theunuo said after inception of Smart cities mission, the ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs launched several initiatives for smart cities in India to take part in the form of challenges and competitions, among which the India Cycle for Change (C4C) and the Streets for People (S4P) challenges were launched in the month of June and September, 2020 respectively.

He said that C4C was an initiative to inspire and support cities to implement cycling friendly initiative, to encourage cities to experiment cycling and build confidence for city-level scale-up with the goal to learn, rather than to perfection.

The main objective of Kohima smart city participating in C4C was to introduce friendly non-motorised vehicles in the city while also encouraging the public to take up cycling as an alternate mode of transportation.

Kohima Smart City was selected as one of the top 11 cities and bagged Rs.100 lakh cash award in this challenge.

Streets for People (S4P) was picked to share space especially for under-utilized spaces on the streets including planning and paradigm shift of planning not for cars but for people, where Kohima bagged Rs.50 lakh cash award and secured the first position among the top 11 cities.

Nurturing Neighbourhood challenge (NNC) also another Smart city challenge where activities such as place making and pop-ups for children were identified at bus stoppage, schools, parks and available space in few municipal wards in Kohima.

In this challenge, Kohima secured the top 11 position.

n the occasion of the 76th Independence Day, chief secretary of Nagaland, J Alam and agriculture production commissioner (APC), Kikheto Sema handed over Integrated Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd Registration Certificates to Sechuma Village Integrated Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd and Sakhabama Village Integrated Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd at the Secretariat Plaza on Monday.

According to a DIPR report, the main activities of the societies includes agri & allied activities, including agri credit facilities and marketing of their produces.

The chief secretary called on the department of Cooperation to go online, be citizen friendly, facilitate cashless transaction, reduce waiting period and create a robust system to deliver

better and efficient governance without compromising on any regulatory requirements. He said this would also ease the process of office functioning and bring transparency.

The department of Cooperation informed that in pursuance to the recommendations of the Study Committee on NCDC Sponsored Schemes and with the approval of the State Cabinet one Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society for each village has been implemented which will act as a Model Cooperative Society for others to emulate.

The department also stated that “Formation of One Village - One Cooperative Society” is being undertaken to de-clutter, streamline and provide a robust membership, against small membership and limited objectives.

This step is envisioned

to provide a reliable medium for implementation of various projects, CSS in the rural areas. This One Village, One Cooperative Society, christened as Integrated Village Multipurpose Cooperative Society, will act as One Stop Avenue for implementation of all developmental activities, implemented through various departments and agencies.

Usually, in an Integrated Village Multipurpose Cooperative Society, at least one member from each household is a member and a potential share holder.

The authenticity of all the members are authenticated and verified through their Aadhar number. All the members will have their bank account linked to the Cooperative Society’s account.

As per Nagaland Cooperative Societies Act 2017 and as per the Bye-Laws, the Board of Directors/ Managing Committee will be elected democratically.

Till date, 132 Integrated Village Multipurpose Cooperative Societies have been registered.

The plan is to reach all producing villages in the next decade and the aim is to groom these cooperatives into producing units/ companies, generating employment and income for each member of the village, DIPR report stated.

DIMAPUR: District-level exhibition stalls and sale were inaugurated in various districts as part of the 76th Independence Day celebration in Nagaland.

The stalls were inaugurated under the initiative of Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA).

Zunheboto: ATMA Zunheboto district organised a district level exhibition stall cum sale on Independence Day at local ground, Zunheboto.

According to a DIPR report, the exhibition stall was inaugurated by the chief guest, minister for Agriculture & Cooperation, G. Kaito Aye. A total of three Self Help Groups (SHGs) representing three ATMA blocks—Akuhaito, Akuluto, Satakha, one ATMA progressive farmer and allied departments—department of Soil & Water Conservation, Land Resource, Horticulture, Agriculture and Veterinary & A.H Departments showcased different activities and produce of the district.

Peren: In Peren, four exhibition stalls run by four prog ressive SHG farmers of Peren district were opened at the exhibition & sale at GHSS Jalukie, Peren.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who hoisted the tricolor in Guwahati, announced that his government will withdraw one lakh ‘minor cases’, including some involving social media posts, to reduce burden on lower courts.

He also declared a slew of measures to strengthen education, healthcare, agriculture and other sectors in the state.

He said there are about four lakh cases pending in the state’s lower courts.

The government has decided that one lakh minor cases registered before the midnight of August 14, 2022, will be withdrawn, he said.

“This will enable the judiciary to focus on more heinous crimes such as rape and murder,” he stated.

The chief minister also said if any innocent person is languishing in jail due to lack of access to lawyers, prompt release of such individuals will be ensured.

Asserting that Assam is an integral part of India,

Sarma said that those who are still dreaming of “sovereignty” should return to the discussion table.

“Sovereignty is nonnegotiable and Assam will never leave India,” he said, in an apparent message to militant groups ULFA(I) and NSCN who have called for a “boycott” of Independence Day celebrations and “total shutdown” in five northeastern states, including Assam.

The mass participation in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ programme in the state since Saturday has “brought to fore the patriotic feelings that is inherent in each person’s heart”, the chief minister said.

“The love people displayed for the Tricolour over the last three days proves Assam is always with India,” Sarma said.

“Hope those who are still dreaming of sovereignty will return to the discussion table and work together for the development of the state,” he said, affirming that “people of Assam do not support terrorism”.

Elaborating on the measures taken by his government in the last one year, the chief minister said thrust will be given on sectors such as connectivity, healthcare, education and agriculture.

Poppy plantations of around 14,000 acres had also been destroyed.

While, 256 cases had been registered arresting 432 persons, seizure of drugs amounting to Rs 818 crore and poppy plantation of 531 acres had been destroyed under

the War on Drugs 2.0, he added.

He informed that the state government was in process of setting up 34 police outposts at all districts located along the international border and also along the Imphal-Jiribam section of National Highway.

Singh further hailed the Agnipath Scheme of the Central government.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said the state would soon recruit Special Executives to strengthen the police force in the North-eastern state.

The government will appoint Special Executives to give more teeth to the police force apart from filling up posts in the state security forces, he said during his maiden Independence Day speech at the Assam Rifles ground here.

The chief minister also said that the government has already decided to instal 400 CCTV surveillance systems in Agartala and its outskirts.

The Special Executives will be like Special Police Officers (SPOs) who were recruited during the Left rule to assist the state police when insurgency was at its peak in the state in the late 90s, a senior officer said.

Outlining the government’s focus areas, the chief minister said various welfare schemes and development projects have been initiated to ensure the overall development of the state and its people.

“Tripura is among the frontrunner states when it comes to the successful

implementation of central and state government sponsored schemes as per the Niti Aayog report”, he said.

Social pension for the poor will be enhanced to Rs. 2,000 per month from October this year, the chief minister said.

At present, 3.89 lakh selected beneficiaries receive social pension in the state.

As many as 100 government-run schools have been brought under ‘Vidyajyoti’ scheme in which Rs. 500 crore will be invested to create more facilities within next five years”, he said.

The Project ‘Mission 100’ of Vidyajyoti schools was launched to improve the quality of school education in the state by converting 100 existing high and higher secondary schools into state-of-the-art facilities. The project stands on three main pillars: augmenting infrastructure, igniting minds, and blooming children. The chief minister also said, “The Agartala-Gangasagar (Bangladesh) railway construction work has been making good progress and it is expected to be completed on the Indian side by June next year”.

Noting that seven out of ten Meghalayans are less than 35 years old, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday said that he wanted to transform Meghalaya into a vibrant, globally recognized region by 2032.

“I want to transform Meghalaya into a vibrant, globally recognized region that we all can be proud of. A Meghalaya that combines the best of our traditional ethos, contemporary values, and technology. This is what I want to achieve, together with each one of you, in the next 10 years as we move from golden jubilee to diamond jubilee of statehood in 2032,” he said in the course of his Independence Day speech after hoisting the national tri-colour at the Polo Grounds, Shillong.

“We are a young State. Seven out of ten Meghalayans are less than 35 years old. The youth have the responsibility of transforming the economy, preserving the heritage and bringing laurels to the State,” he said, adding that his government has undertaken many youthcentered initiatives over

the last four and a half years.

Stating that a key priority for youth is employment, the Chief Minister said, “Entrepreneurship is the route through which our youth can become job creators. We have been handholding these entrepreneurs in making business plan, applying for loans, getting certifications, and exploring new markets.”

He said the PRIME (Promotion and Incubation of Market Driven Enterprises), a flagship program of the government, has benefitted 1,300 entrepreneurs over the last three years.

“I am optimistic that with support from the PRIME program, we will have many more such startups that will not just create employment but also make Meghalaya an ideal destination to invest in,” the Chief Minister said.

Sangma said that his government has also launched the ASPIRE program to unlock the confidence, talent and potential of tribal youth across the State through a combination of soft skills programmes and talent identification intervention.

Steps to strengthen internal security in Mizoram Schemes for women’s welfare in Sikkim

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said his government has been taking concrete steps to strengthen the internal security of the state.

Addressing the people on the occasion of 76th Independence Day in Aizawl, the chief minister said there has been no major law and order problem in the state due to the “proactive measures taken by the police in the past one year”.

Of the 1,633 criminal cases registered, 676 have been successfully investigated, while 12 arms smuggling cases have been recorded and 20 illegal dealers arrested, he said.

The law enforcement agencies have arrested 2,425 people for violation of the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Act since its implementation in May 2019,

and 517 drug traffickers were apprehended and prosecuted during the last one year, the CM said. He urged the people to make Mizoram a land of peace and prosperity.

“Let us join hands to face the challenges of tomorrow through a common commitment towards peace, prosperity and social justice.

“Our present times demand that we remain strong and confident in order to be able to pursue our dreams of realising newer heights in the future,” the chief minister said.

Independence Day was celebrated across Mizoram on Monday with several functions held in all the district capitals and important towns of the state.

The grand event was held at Assam Rifles ground in Aizawl.

Zoramthanga also claimed that the state achieved significant progress in various sectors in the last 12 months despite several hurdles triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the chief minister, the state public works department has completed several projects across the state during the past 12 months despite the pandemic. Under the Centre’s Jal Jeevan Mission, the state has so far provided tap connections to 85,231 families in 177 rural villages and 1,13,800 households in urban areas.

Altogether, 2,08,829 households have been issued job cards and all of them were provided employment during the 2021-22 fiscal. The rural development department is aiming at providing 100 days of employment to

active job card holders by the end of the current fiscal, he said.

Zoramthanga said the state has been making constant efforts for the development of tourism.

It has received a sanction of Rs 800 lakh from the Centre for the development of villagebased eco-tourism in Khamrang near Aizawl.

An International Tourism Mart to be held in Mizoram in early November is expected to give a major boost to tourism promotion in the state, he said.

Recently, the Centre has approved a proposal for tourism infrastructure development for Mizoram under the “Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive Scheme” at various locations in the state, the chief minister added.

Sikkim Chief Minister P S Tamang Monday hoisted the national flag at Bhaichung Stadium in Namchi on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the country’s Independence and announced schemes for the welfare of women in the mountain state.

The state-level programme was held outside capital Gangtok for the first time since Sikkim merged with the Indian Union in 1975 as Paljor Stadium, where it is held, is being renovated.

Speaking after hoisting the Tricolour, Tamang announced the launch of ‘Aama Yojana’ and ‘Vatsalya Yojana’ and said the Sikkim government is working continuously for the welfare of women.

Under Aama Yojana all unemployed mothers in the state will recieve Rs 20,000 an-

nually which will be deposited in their bank accounts. Under the Vatsalya Yojana an aid of Rs three lakh will be provided to childless women for in vitro fertilization treatment, he said.

Expressing concern over the declining fertility in Sikkim, Tamang said that Vatsalya Yojana will cover women in government jobs through the health department and others through Chief Minister’s Medical Assistance.

The financial assistance of Rs three lakh for IVF treatment will be given in two phases - Rs one lakh in the first and Rs two lakh in the second and last phase.

The chief minister also announced year-long maternity leave for women employees of the state beginning today in

place of the six month leave which was the practice so far.

He launched the mobile village clinic programme to provide accessible medical facilities to people in remote areas in all the six districts.

The mobile clinics will be manned by trained medical staff and will provide quality health care facilities to villagers at their doorsteps. The clinics will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and villagers will no longer require to travel long distances for treatment or to get their medical test reports.

“Our government is dedicated to providing excellent health care facilities for the people. Health related initiatives and schemes have to be top notch if our society is to progress,” Tamang said.

ITANAGAR, AUG 15 (PTI): A trial to use drones to provide superior healthcare services to tribal and rural communities in Seppa, a town in East Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh, was launched on the 76th Independence Day. Redwing Labs, a startup, would provide made in India hybrid Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) drones and run end-to-end operations for the project.

The healthcare drone pilots in Arunachal Pradesh are an outcome of the state’s partnership with the World Economic Forum’s Medicines From the Sky (MFTS) initiative. “ I n m i d - 2 0 2 1 , we undertook a field study in Arunachal Pradesh to learn more about the local health distribution system, disease profile and nature of the terrain. Traversing the Seppa-Bameng belt by road in particular made it

evident that drones were an absolute necessity,” said Vignesh Santhanam, lead for aerospace and drones at the World Economic Forum.

“Through our learnings in Telangana, we are looking to stress test our systems in Arunachal Pradesh under the liberalised drone regime while factoring in economic principles right from the point of initiation,” he added.

The drone network is being set up on a limited experimental basis to pilot aerial healthcare deliveries in the state. The network would enable diagnostics and emergency treatments in the local health centres.

By enabling care at the local level, the drone network aims to reduce out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) for patients, increase immunisation rates and improve welfare gains.

This experimental network would be accompanied by

an impact evaluation study to understand the costbenefit and health impact of using drones in India’s public health system.

Pravimal Abhishek, Deputy Commissioner, East Kameng District, said, “The district has a very hilly terrain which makes it difficult to access interior areas, particularly during monsoons.

I am sure drone-based drug delivery will be a game changer in strengthening access to healthcare in such remote areas. Hoping that this pilot project would give us the answers and clarity for the future.”

The pilot project in East Kameng is made possible by the financial and technical support from SAMRIDH Healthcare Blended Financing Facility – an initiative supported

AIZAWL, AUG 15 (PTI): The African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in Mizoram has begun to subside, an official said on Monday.

The number of piggery deaths has significantly declined over the last few days, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department Joint Director (Livestock Health) Lalhmingthanga said. However, the situation is not predictable as the outbreak could surge at any time because almost the entire state has been affected by ASF, he said.

Last month, carcasses of wild boars were found in jungles near the Myanmar border, and the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal recently confirmed that they died of ASF. Lalhmingthanga said that the state government is yet to inform the Centre about the detection of the highly contagious pig disease in wild boards. He said that the government would also write to the Centre, urging it to import vaccines for ASF from Vietnam.

The state police was included in two editions of the World Book of Records for carrying out disposal of narcotics substances worth over Rs 2,362.9 crore on June 24 this year and for the seizure of 468 species of exotic animals near the Myanmar border in Champhai district in May, the officer said.

As per reports, the scuffle began after some people were having alcohol and making comments on the other group. The police said that both groups are very familiar with each other and they often fight over property issues.

43% of legislators have criminal antecedents: SCBA prez Vikas Singh

NEW DELHI, AUG 15 (PTI): Supreme Cour t Bar Association (SCBA) President Vikas Singh on Monday said 43 per cent of lawmakers have criminal antecedents and the country needs a course correction by enacting a law to prevent such persons from getting elected.

Singh, addressing a function at the Supreme Court on the 75th anniversar y of India’s independence, also urged the Collegium to elevate people from the lower judiciary to the Supreme Court “only on the basis of the disposals they do rather than on the seniority”.

He said these were the two areas with regard to the justice delivery -quality of legislators and appointment of judges -where serious reforms and serious introspection were needed. “Today, after 75 years if we see 43 per cent of our legislators having criminal antecedents, I think we need a course correction.

I think we need to amend (law) because no individual political party can take the initiative of ensuring that people with criminal antecedents are not elected.

Because if a party does not give a ticket to somebody who has been winning, the other party will,” he said.

Deflection of purpose

peeches by leaders of various Naga political groups on the occasion of the 76th ‘Naga Independence Day’ on August 14 had more or less the same message of appealing to Nagas for unity.

Though the word may have been used in common but yet they meant differently. Naga leaders have been appealing to the people to ‘come together’ to unite for the common goal. This goes the same for state political leaders, who just don’t seem to have gotten away from using the same message. The message of uniting for the common goal would obviously mean different things. For the NPGs coming together is like a willful thinking because factionalism had taken deep roots since the first major split in the NNC after the Revolutionary Government of Nagaland (RGN) was formed. Since 1968 the NNC has further split into factions and the factions them-selves got split down the line that today there are at least nine NPGs and counting. Therefore, in Naga political lexicon ‘unity’ is merely a politically correct word that has been pursued on many occasions and during different periods. Political leaders sought to bring unity among all NPGs through deliberations with sections of tribe hohos, CSOs. This led formation of the Joint Legisla-tors Forum (JLF) in 2012. By the 2020 those who attempted to bring unity among all NPGs split when NPF walked out of JLF and formed its own Political Affairs Mission (PAM) on August 28, 2020. Nevertheless, the legislators re-united and formed the Parliamentary Core Committee on Naga Political Issue in June 2021. Added to this charade of pursuing solution as ac-tive/proactive facilitator which has given the excuse of the second ‘opposition-less government’ in the state’s political history when opposition NPF with 26 MLAs joined the government and renamed the PDA (NDPP-BJP-Ind) as United Democratic Alliance (UDA). This brilliant piece of inspiration was meant to bring all legislators together for pursuing solution to the Naga politi-cal issue. Earlier also on May 10, 2015 eight Congress MLAs joined the ruling DAN coalition with BJP as one of the constituents.

AICC was livid with rage but the Congress MLAs justified that they joined the government for Naga political issue. Eventually on November 25, 2015 the eight Congress MLAs merged enbloc with NPF. The plea of doing such thing under the specious plea of Naga unity for Naga political solution has not brought unity or solution anywhere near in 2015 and today under the UDA. To further bring the plea of unity and solution closer, the oppo-sition Congress has attacked the UDA government for virtually playing a double role- running with the hare and hunting with the hounds. Despite talks between the government of India and the NPGs having officially concluded on October 31, 2019 and later despite the Centre’s official Interlocutor R.N. Ravi having resigned and the Centre appointing a Representative and not an Interlocutor, the state government had consistently referred to A.K. Mishra as Interlocutor and not Representative. It was only on July 16, 2022 at one of the many consultative meetings in the past, did the UDA eventually acknowledge that talks had concluded on October 31, 2019. In-stead of talking in the air, perhaps the elected members could promote unity if they heeded to the cries of people who are groaning against multiple taxations and act in unity under UDA to stop such unwanted activities that has destroyed society and economy.

The Bible never asks, “Should a Christian sin?” The Bible emphatically states that a Christian must not sin. The work of the new birth is being effective in us when we do not commit sin. It is not merely that we have the power not to sin, but that we have actually stopped sinning. Yet 1 John 3:9 does not mean that we cannot sin— it simply means that if we will obey the life of God in us, that we do not have to sin.

India, being a superpower in the making can be defined as the extensive ability to exert influence on an global scale.

Unfortunately, conflicts, divisions and violence is a huge issue in Nagaland today.

Why should there be so many underground Factions, Associations, Unions and why Naga civil society is so segmented on Community, Region and tribal lines?

Do the Nagas really have Religious, cultural or’ ideological differences amongst us?

There have been many pointless conflicts, divisions and act of violence that have killed thousands of our own fellow brothers and sisters in the name of the Naga’s freedom movement.

As a result, today, Nagas are completely engulfed by uncertainty and are at the cross road politically, Socially and Religiously.

Nagas are in a highly tricky situation inundated by uncertain future.

If the causes of these divisions are due to certain misunderstandings on community stratification amongst the inherent classless Naga society, there’s always dignified way of dismantling the tribal or community stratification

through socio-political processes unitedly by the Naga ourselves to eradicate the virus.

Nevertheless, as of today’s situation, there’s a clear sign of dangerous disunity winning over the Nagas.

And consequently, we seem to have surrendered our destiny to be determined by certain people who does not understand the basic history of the Nagas.

Figure out what is most important for survival of the Nagas with our inherent culture, ideology and Faith in this challenging situation.

When someone else, no matter how well placed politically or’ economically, tells us what they think we should be doing, for our future generations, we must remind ourselves that no one else but, we are the master for determining our own destiny.

It is time for Nagas to look up to people of Mizoram and Meghalaya how they skillfully managed their situation so efficiently in safeguarding the interest of their respective state.

So far, we’ve never heared or seen their leaders bowing down before anybody to govern their states.

Naga intellectuals, Politicians, underground leaders, church leaders and leaders of various civil society organizations need to debate over why this abrupt nonlinearities signs. why are we Nagas being so divisive?

HALDWANI (U’KHAND), AUG 15 (PTI): The body of an army jawan was found in an old bunker in Siachen, 38 years after he went missing in an avalanche while on patrol. The Sainik Group Centre in Ranikhet on Sunday identified the body as that of Chandrashekhar Harbola of 19 Kumaon Regiment.

Harbola was part of a 20-member troop that was dispatched to the world’s highest battlefield for ‘Operation Meghdoot’ to fight Pakistan in 1984.

During patrolling, they came in the grip of an ice storm. While the bodies of 15 soldiers were recovered, those of the other five could not be found and Harbola was one among them. His wife Shanti Devi, originally from Almora, currently lives in Saraswati Vihar Colony here. His body is expected to reach here late on Monday.

Haldwani sub-collector Manish Kumar and tehsildar Sanjay Kumar, who reached Harbola’s house, said his last rites will be performed with full military honours. Shanti Devi said at the time, they were married for nine years and that she was 28. Their elder daughter at the time was four and the younger one was one and a half years old.

NEW DELHI, AUG 15 (PTI): Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s daughter Anita Bose Pfaff has said time has come to bring back his remains to India and suggested that DNA testing can provide answers to those still having doubts about his death on August 18, 1945.

HYDERABAD, AUG 15 (PTI): Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) on Monday said its COVID-19 intranasal vaccine (BBV154) has proven to be safe, well-tolerated, and immunogenic in subjects in controlled clinical trials phase III. The vaccine candidate was evaluated earlier in phase I and II clinical trials with successful results.

BBV154 has been specifically formulated to allow intranasal delivery. In addition, the nasal delivery system has been designed and developed to be costeffective in low and middleincome countries, a press release from the vaccine maker said.

BBV154 was developed in partnership with Washington University St Louis, which had designed and developed the recombinant adenoviral vectored constructs and evaluated them in preclinical studies for efficacy.

D I M A P U R , AU G 1 5 (NPN): Nagaland Zeliang Peoples’ Organization and the Peren civils society organizations have issued a rejoinder to statement made by Western Sumi Hoho (WSH).

In a statement, the CSOs said that since time immemorial, the Naga tribes have existed side by side abiding by set codes of honour and respect for each other.

It said each village and tribe knew and knows as to with which village/villages or tribe/tribes their land has traditional boundary, adding that every inch of land within Nagaland was deemed as having an owner.

With regard to Peren district, CSOs said all Naga tribes recognised it as the land of the Zeliang tribe with historical borders with Chakro Angami land and no other tribe. Citing Naga custom of seeking adoption and

rating of IGST (integrated goods and services tax) on domestic procurement by a unit in an SEZ; continuation of indirect tax benefits to developers of these zones; and allowing depreciation on sale of used capital goods cleared to domestic tariff areas.

There is also a plan to extend the corporate tax rate to 15 per cent without any exemptions for units undertaking authorised operations in these development hubs.

States can also provide support measures to these zones to boost manufacturing and job creation. The existing SEZ Act was enacted in 2006 with an aim to create export hubs and boost manufacturing in the country. However, these zones started losing their sheen after imposition of minimum alternate tax and introduction of sunset clause for removal of tax incentives.

does not change the status of ownership of the land, as the land would still belong to the original landowner.

The creation of areas of jurisdiction for administrative convenience has no effect upon the landownership, it added. It also narrated how Kiyevi, in 1939, migrated from Zunheboto and established a village after following the Naga customary procedure of seeking permission and adoption as the son of Lamhai village. Later in 1979-80, CSOs said that the erstwhile Kiyevi village was relocated to the Dhansiripar sub-division with the permission of the state government and subsequently was renamed as Kiyeto village and recognized as such on February 3, 1993. Therefore, it said that Kiyevi village no longer existed. However, after the entire village shifted to the new site, it claimed that “late Yesheto, Moho-

While asserting that the people of eastern Nagaland needed development instead of arm conflicts, ENPO warned that their land should not be targeted for firing or use it as a battle field.

It said that public of Eastern Nagaland would not tolerate violation of the popular Tuensang Summit Resolution or any kind violence, activities that would hamper peace in the area.

ENPO, therefore, once again appealed to all concerned to honour the sentiments of public for peace and tranquillity in the region.

To sustain loan growth of 15 pc in current fiscal, says SBI chairman

NEW DELHI, AUG 15 (PTI): State Bank of India (SBI) has said it expects to sustain credit growth of about 15 per cent in the current fiscal with rising demand from retail and corporate borrowers despite hardening of lending rate.

The country’s largest lender reported a 14.93 per cent rise in advances to Rs 29,00,636 crore in the first quarter ended June 30, 2022 as compared to Rs 25,23,793 crore during the same period a year ago. Of this, retail loan registered a growth rate of 18.58 per cent while corporate advances improved by 10.57 per cent year-on-year at the end of June quarter.

SBI chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara also said that the bank will soon come out with only YONO which is YONO 2.0 with many more advanced features and functionalities. “The digital leadership journey of the bank is continuing. More than 96.6 per cent of the transactions are now routed through alternate channels. The registered users on YONO have already crossed 5.25 crore, a big milestone and which has created a significant value for the bank. Sixty-five per

cent of the new savings accounts are opened through YONO,” he said at an analyst call recently. On maintaining 15 per cent credit growth, he said, “I am quite hopeful the reason behind is kind of a term loan and also the underutilisation of the working capital, which is all aggregating to almost Rs 5 lakh crore, and the pipeline is almost Rs 1.2 lakh crore.

NEW DELHI, AUG 15 (PTI): The commerce ministry is proposing a host of direct and indirect incentives such as deferral of import duties and exemption from export taxes to revamp Special Economic Zones through a new legislation, an official said.

In the Union Budget this year, the government proposed to replace the existing law governing Special Economic Zones (SEZs) with a new legislation to enable states to become partners in ‘Development of Enterprise and Service Hubs’ (DESH). The official said the commerce ministry has sought views of different ministries, including finance, on the new bill.

China conducts another military drills near Taiwan

BEIJING/TAIPEI, AUG 15 (PTI): China resorted to more high-intensity military drills around Taiwan on Monday as one more American Congressional delegation visited the selfruled Island claimed by Beijing, challenging its ‘one China’ policy.

The new drills come less than a fortnight after Beijing launched unprecedented war games in retaliation to US House Speaker Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, sparking fears of a Chinese invasion of the breakaway island. The US Congressional delegation led by Massachusetts Democratic Senator Ed Markey arrived in Taipei on an unannounced two-day visit on Sunday, close on the heels of Pelosi’s visit on August 2, the highest-level visit

The Taiwanese foreign ministry added that it sincerely welcomed the del-

Iran rejects involvement in attack on Rushdie T E H R A N, AU G 1 5 (IANS): Iran has denied any involvement in the attack on Indian-born writer Salman Rushdie in the US last week.

“There is no connection between Iran and the perpetrator,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said on Monday.

“Rushdie himself is responsible for the attack,” dpa news agency quoted Kanaani as saying, noting that the author’s work not only offended Iran, but Muslims worldwide.

Rushdie was stabbed onstage as he was about to deliver a lecture in New York State on August 12.

The writer is recovering in hospital and a 24-year-old suspect is in custody.

The US offer to sell Boeing CH-47 Chinooks was discussed as early as last year by former Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and his American counterpart, Lloyd Austin, in Washington even before Duterte was persuaded by key Cabinet members to cancel the deal, Romualdez said. Cabinet members, Finance Secretary Sonny Dominguez, warned Duterte then that Western countries may withhold assistance that could help the Philippines deal with and recover from coronavirus outbreaks, two Philippine officials told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of a lack of authority to discuss the issue publicly.

Lorenzana first confirmed the cancellation of the contract to secure Russia’s helicopters in an interview with AP last month.

After serving as defence chief under Duterte, Lorenzana has been appointed by new President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to head a government agency in charge of transforming former military bases into business hubs. Romualdez said the Philippine government under Duterte made

Court convicts Suu Kyi on more corruption charges

BANGKOK, AUG 15 (AP): A court in militaryruled Myanmar convicted the country’s ousted leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, on more corruption charges on Monday, adding six years to her earlier 11-year prison sentence, a legal official said.

The trial was held behind closed doors, with no access for media or the public, and her lawyers were forbidden by a gag order from revealing information about the proceedings.

In the four corruption cases decided Monday, Suu Kyi was alleged to have abused her position to rent public land at below market prices and to have built a residence with donations meant for charitable purposes. She received sentences of three years

Philippines eyes US helicopters after scrapping Russian deal MANILA, AUG 15 (AP): Philippine officials are considering a US offer to provide heavy-lift helicopters like its widely used Chinooks after Manila scrapped a deal to buy military choppers from Russia due to fears of Western sanctions, the Philippine ambassador to Washington said on Monday. ThenPresident Rodrigo Duterte approved the cancellation of the signed deal to buy 16 Russian Mi-17 helicopters due to concerns over possible Western sanctions, which could hamper fast bank transfers of the income Filipino workers send home from the US and other Western countries, Ambassador Jose Romualdez said.

Romualdez said Washington did not pressure the Philippines to drop the 12.7-billion-peso (USD 227 million) deal with the Russians. But following Russia’s

ment, which was signed in November, the first batch of the multi-purpose helicopters would have been scheduled for delivery by Russia’s Sovtechnoexport in about two years. Aside from the 16 helicopters, one unit should have been given for free to the Philippines, defence officials said.

The Russian-made helicopters could have been used for combat, search and rescue operations, and medical evacuations in the Southeast Asian archipelago, which is often lashed by typhoons and other natural disasters, Philippine officials said.

Putin sent his greetings to Kim as Monday marks the day of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, writing that the two nations share a tradition of bilateral friendship and cooperation, dpa news agency quoted the state media report as saying.

It is in the interest of the people of both countries to expand relations, which would also help “strengthen security and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the whole Northeast Asian region”, Putin was reported as saying.

Adults suggests nixing naps, striving for 7-9 hours a night

apping, as well as sleeping too much or too little or having poor sleep patterns, appears to increase the risk for cardiovascular disease in older adults, new research shows. The study, published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Heart Association, adds to a growing body of evidence supporting sleep’s importance to good health. The American Heart Association recently added sleep duration to its checklist of health and lifestyle factors for cardiovascular health, known as Life’s Essential 8.

It says adults should average seven to nine hours of sleep a night. “Good sleep behavior is essential to preserve cardiovascular health in middleaged and older adults,” said lead author Weili Xu, a senior researcher at the Aging Research Center in the department of neurobiology, care sciences and society at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. “We encourage people to keep nighttime sleeping between seven to nine hours and to avoid frequent or excessive napping.”

Prior research has shown poor sleep may put people at higher risk for a range of chronic illnesses and conditions affecting heart and brain health.

These include cardiovascular disease, dementia, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention, nearly 35% of U.S. adults say they get less than seven hours of sleep, while 3.6% say they get 10 or more hours.

Previous sleep duration studies show that sleeping too much or too little both may raise the risk for cardiovascular disease. But whether napping is good or bad has been unclear.

In the new study, researchers analyzed sleep patterns for 12,268 adults in the Swedish Twin Registry.

Participants were an average of 70 years old at the start of the study, with no history of major cardiovascular events.

A questionnaire was used to collect data on nighttime sleep duration; daytime napping; daytime sleepiness; the degree to which they considered themselves a night person or morning person, based on the time of day they considered themselves most alert; and symptoms of sleep disorders, such as snoring and insomnia.

Participants were followed for up to 18 years to track whether they developed any major cardiovascular

problems, including heart disease and stroke.

People who reported sleeping between seven and nine hours each night were least likely to develop cardiovascular disease, a finding in keeping with prior research.

Compared with that group, those who reported less than seven hours were 14% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease, and those who reported more than 10 hours were 10% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease.

Compared with people who said they never napped, those who reported napping up to 30 minutes were 11% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease. The risk increased by 23% if naps lasted longer than 30 minutes. Overall, those who reported poor sleep patterns or other sleep issues – including insomnia, heavy snoring, getting too much or too little sleep, frequent daytime sleepiness and considering themselves a night person – had a 22% higher risk Study participants who reported less than seven hours of sleep at night and napping

more than 30 minutes each day had the highest risk for cardiovascular disease – 47% higher than those reporting the optimal amount of sleep and no naps.

The jury is still out on whether naps affect cardiovascular risk across the lifespan, said Marie-Pierre StOnge, center director for the Sleep Center of Excellence and an associate professor at Columbia University in New York City. Book on Dzüleke released

book titled “Dzüleke Phese Mu Kelhoudze” chronicling the foundation of Dzüleke village was formally released by 90-yearold Vinyühu Meyase and 87-year-old Jieviu Sophi during a gathering of village elders and personalities on Saturday.

The book was an initiative of the Dzüleke Village Council, written

by Letso Meyase, Bunyü Sophi, Meto Khate, Megotsolie Chase and Rokovotso Meyase and published

by PenThrill Publication House. Speaking on behalf of the authors, Rokovotso Meyase said the book was conceptualized in 2010, however, the project took off only in 2021.

He disclosed that it took 532 days to complete the book which involved meeting a lot of people from Dzüleke, Khonoma, Kohima, Dimapur, Punglwa, Choumukedima, and interviewing about 18-20 people.

He cited that other sources include primary and secondary sources, library and phone conversations, classroom lectures, unpublished documents etc. He highlighted that the book contained centuryold stories spanning across 13 generations, which were acquired from the wisdom of the elderly and further

asserted on preserving the history of “our” place. “If we don’t document them now, we won’t have records of our past and history”, he said.

Meyase also read out the publisher’s note by Vishü Rita Krocha, who expressed regret for her inability to be there for the launch of the 61st publication of PenThrill and the second book in Tenyidie.

Pointing to one of the global threats we were facing today, which was the disappearance of languages at an alarming rate, she commended the Dzüleke Village Council for taking up this wonderful initiative in documenting the history and origin of this beautiful place in Tenyidie.

She further remarked that Dzüleke, as a place was known and loved by many people while expressing

confidence that anyone who had been to this place would be interested to learn more about it.

She pointed out that translation sometimes could not fully capture the nuances conveyed in a different language, however, perhaps, having this book translated into English would enable a lot more people to learn about the rich history of Dzüleke.

Also stating appreciation for the authors for their painstaking research in making the book - Dzüleke Phese mu Kelhoudze, a reality, she hoped that Dzüleke would continue to

be a place that brings joy and happiness to all those who come visiting.

N E W D E L H I , AU G 15 (PTI): World football gover ning body FIFA has informed the Sports Ministry that it remains firm in its opposition to individual members’ inclusion in the electoral college for the upcoming All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) elections.

Seeking clarity on FIFA’s demands and the sports ministry’s stand on the Indian football imbroglio, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) on Monday received a communication from the ministry, sources in the know of things said.

“In the letter, the union sports ministry has mentioned ever ything about the suggestions given by FIFA during their meeting with the ministry,” a source said.

FIFA wants individual members of electoral college to come from the state associations and other entities.

The letter from the ministry was received a day after the CoA wrote to them asking for concrete advice based on FIFA’s requirements and the ministry’s stand on the same.

“We have given our stand on AIFF in a written

reply to CoA which will be put before the court in the next hearing,” a ministry official said without elaborating.

Everything will be placed in front of the Supreme Court on August 17 -- Wednesday -- which is also the last date of filing nomination for the post of AIFF president, left vacant since Praful Patel’s ouster by the top court.

FIFA had also earlier said that it was “not a pr udent idea” to have equal number of eminent players alongside the state association representatives.

However, the world body is okay with the executive committee having 25 per cent former players as Coopted members.

The elections to the executive committee of the AIFF will be held on August 28 and the poll process had started following the notification
