Congress stuns BJP to regain power in Karnataka

B E N G A L U RU / N E W DELHI, MAY 13 (PTI): The Congress on Saturday made a stunning comeback in Karnataka ousting the BJP from its lone southern citadel with a comfortable majority (135 seats) in a morale booster win that will be key for reviving its electoral fortunes ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The Congress’ decisive victory in the Assembly elections after an aggressive pro-poor campaign spearheaded by mass leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC president D K Shivakumar also saw Karnataka continuing with a 38-year-old anti-incumbency trend. The state has never voted an incumbent party to power since 1985.

front runners for the chief minister’s post. The Congress has returned to power on its own in Karnataka after 10 years. Siddaramaiah was the chief minister from 2013 to 2018.

The first meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will be held at 5.30 p.m. on Sunday, according to AICC in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Surjewala.

The meeting is likely to decide the name of the new chief minister.

Helped by a nearly five per cent vote swing in its favour, the Congress with a vote share of 42.88 per cent bagged 136 out of the 224 seats at stake and was leading in one, according to Election Commission data at 9 pm.

The magic mark is 113.

It was also the Congress’ best-ever performance in Karnataka since 1999 when the party won 132 seats.

The party bagged 80 seats in the 2018 elections with

a vote share of 38 per cent.

Of the six regions in the state, the Congress swept the Old Mysuru, Mumbai Karnataka, Hyderabad Karnataka and Central Karnataka regions.

The BJP managed to retain its hold only in Coastal Karnataka while it was a mixed bag in Bengaluru.

Though its vote share decreased only marginally from 36.2 per cent to 36 per cent, the BJP’s seat tally slumped to 65 from 104 in

2018. It was the second loss for the BJP after Himachal Pradesh in December last year.

As BJP leaders were contemplative in defeat, chief minister Basavaraj Bommai said the party could not make the mark “in spite of a lot of effort put in by everyone, including the prime minister and workers of the party”.

Singrauli SP Yusuf Kureshi told the press that raids were conducted on the basis of complaints received from various people.

As many as three teams of district police raided six spa centres simultaneously.

Women were trafficked from Odisha, Kolkata, Assam and Nagaland

“During the raids, sex rackets being operated inside these spa centers were exposed. Over a dozen women were rescued who have been taken into police custody for further investigation,” Kureshi said.

Kureshi further said the owners of two spa centers - “Sudhanshu Spa Centre” and “777” have been arrested and booked under ‘Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act’.

Kureshi said that women were trafficked from Odisha, Kolkata, Assam and Nagaland.

“A total of 13 women, including minors were rescued from two spa centers.

We are trying to find out the link of nexus trafficking girls from other states. We have learned that a strong nexus is involved in trafficking girls and operating sex rackets here. Investigation is still underway,” he added.

(NPN): Working Committee (WC), Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) convenor N. Kitovi Zhimomi has appealed to the Centre to fully implement Article 371(A) so that the state could fully utilize its powers and functions under the said Article.

Speaking at the official induction programme of S Kiviho Zhimomi as president of UNPG-NNC here on Saturday, Kitovi said that even though Art 371(A) has special provision, it has not been fully utilized and kept in cold storage.

DIMAPUR: A two-day Tr i b a l A r t i s a n s M e l a (TAM) organised by Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Ltd (TRIFED) under government of India, Tribal Affair Ministry flagship programme “Marketing and logistic

development for promoting tribal products from North Eastern Region (PTRNER)” in collaboration with state implementing agency MARCOFED commenced on May 12 at Mokokchung Town Hall.

According to a DIPR report, inaugurating the

mela as special guest, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mokokchung, Shashank Pratap Singh proposed regular interaction between the implementing agencies and the local artisans to bring about better marketing strategy.

Highlighting some

concerns of the local artisans, he said due to lack of proper marketing linkages and awareness of products demand in the market, the artisans were not able to expand their marketing beyond the state. He therefore advised the concerned agencies to explore and create awareness for better opportunities. The DC also emphasized on the need to promote specific products which were peculiar in the region.

While delivering a short speech, GM, TRIFED Head Office, Col. M.Mehra said TRIFED objective was to identify local products which could be promoted by expanding their marketing scope through better platform and to provide assistance to enhance the values of their products.

Lok Adalat settles 177 cases

DIMAPUR: As many as 177 cases out of 198 listed were settled and Rs. 2,89,07,043 total settlement involved in the cases were disposed at the National Lok Adalat sitting conducted across districts by the District Legal Services Authorities (DALSA) under the aegis of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authorities (NSLSA).

putes/matters/cases listed for compromise settlement included cases in pending stage as well as in prelitigation stage mostly in the category of bank Recovery, Criminal Compoundable cases & Motor Accident Cases Tribunal (MACT) and other cases viz. public utility.

The sittings held across the district headquarters were headed by the district judges, chief judicial magistrate and

civil judges.

They were assisted by the panel lawyers serving along with the para legal volunteers, who acted as members and facilitators.

DIMAPUR: Nagaland Police on May 12 launched “Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) Tech Refresh 2023” at the short programme held at the Conference Hall of PHQ Kohima.

According to a DIPR report, CCTNS, a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Home Affairs, government of India, for computerization of police processes, and sharing of crime and criminal data through integrated framework, was launched

by ADGP (Admn) and state nodal officer CCTNS, Renchamo P. Kikon.

It may be noted that CCTNS has been in use

in Nagaland since 2012 and at present all has been implemented in 83 police stations. The purpose of the “CCTNS Tech Refresh 2023” was to upgrade the existing hardware and software to the latest platforms for improving the capabilities and efficiency of CCTNS usage primarily at the police stations.

The scope of TechRefresh 2023 covers all 83 police stations implemented with CCTNS and applicable higher offices in the State, which is being carried out in district-wise batches. After the brief inaugural program on May 12, a total of 100 workstations and accesso-

ries for CCTNS usage were issued to the first batch of offices which includes, 11 police stations under Kohima, Tseminyu and State Level Police Stations at PHQ, two District Crime Records Bureau under Kohima and Tseminyu, and two SP Offices under Kohima and Tseminyu districts. A total of 779 workstations/ accessories were under process to be delivered in the subsequent batches covering the remaining 72 police stations, 12 DCRBs, and 12 SP Offices. In addition, workstations and accessories have also been procured for augmenting the existing CCTNS training infrastructure.

Woman arrested with drugs in Kohima

DIMAPUR: A woman was arrested in possession of drugs “sunflower” worth Rs. 1.25 lakh at Mohon Khola, Kohima on May 11.

According to Assam Rifles, the

drugs was found concealed in five soap cases by Kohima battalion of Assam Rifles along with Nagaland police during anti-drugs operation.

The woman was travelling in a

Winger Bus from Senapati, Manipur to Dimapur. AR informed that the recovered drugs along with the woman were handed over to South Police Station, Kohima.

He explained about the three different species commonly found in India, out of which aquilaria crassna was the best species in Nagaland.

Samalemzung also encouraged the participants to make agar wood farming a profession.

IMPHAL, MAY 13: Opposition Communist Party of India (CPI) Manipur State Council on Saturday hit out the Centre alleging that the ‘double engine’ government remained a silent spectator even as Manipur is burning.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah had not made any statement regarding the violence in Manipur till date. Why do they remain silent? CPI strongly condemns such attitude of the Centre,” CPI

Manipur State Council secretary L Thoiren lamented.

Addressing a news conference at the party office in Imphal, Thoiren said the chain of violence have claimed many lives and injured hundreds besides rendering homeless to thousands after their houses were torched. Such a deadly crisis was never seen in the history of Manipur. However, neither the Prime Minister nor the Union home minister made any statement which would calm down the people of the state till date, he alleged. “What is behind

them remaining silent is very doubtful,” he added.

The CPI leader said that a meeting of the executive committee of the state unit of the party has thoroughly deliberated on the prevailing situation in the state. The meeting also minutely discussed the latest political development after 10 sitting Kuki MLAs openly demanded a separate administration for the Kuki in the state. The party considered the stance of the MLAs as a part of some vested interest persons to break Manipur.

The CPI took the issue very seriously. The party is always ready to fight any forces attempting to disintegrate Manipur with the people of the state, the state secretary said.

“The CPI condemns the stance of the 10 MLAs. It is a move to disintegrate Manipur. The CPI is against the stance of the MLAs,” Thoiren said.

TURA, MAY 13 (AGENCIES): An internal memo by a DSP-ranked police officer in West Garo Hills leaked online has caused panic in the Garo Hills region, reports East Mojo The internal memo, only meant for circulation among the police force, claimed that the dreaded Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was regrouping and was on a recruitment drive in the region to once become a force to reckon with.

The memo, dated May 11, was meant for circulation in all police stations of the district with officers being asked to check on the authenticity of the ‘source information’ provided by one of the former members of the outfit.

Victory, defeat part of democracy: Tripura CM on K’taka poll AGARTALA, MAY 13 (PTI): With the Congress returning to power in Karnataka after defeating the BJP, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday said victory and defeat are part of a democratic process.

TEZPUR/GUWAHATI, MAY 13 (PTI): Senior BJP leader in the Northeast and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Saturday said that Congress’ win in Karnataka assembly polls will in no way affect BJP from returning to power for the third successive term at the Centre in 2024.

There is nothing new in Congress’ win in Karnataka as it had been in power in the southern state before the 2014 general election when BJP came to power under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said.

Sarma, who had campaigned extensively in Karnataka before the election, said that he had realised that BJP will not perform well in the state but its performance will in no way affect the party from returning to power at the Centre for the third successive term.

“The opposition is taking this win as a straw to hold on to in the ocean, but it will have no impact in the future,” he said at the sidelines of a function at Bihaguri in Assam’s Sonitpur district.

The Congress headquarters in Guwahati erupted in celebration as news of the party’s win poured in and party workers burst crackers and distributed sweets.

There was, however, a scuffle with the police and a group of Congress workers outside the party headquarters when they tried to break a barricade to celebrate on the streets.

The situation was soon brought under control, a police official said.

The memo added that as many as 500 youths from the various districts of Garo Hills had joined the outfit and had been sent to Myanmar and Nagaland for basic training. It also claimed that various big businessmen, who were close associates of the GNLA earlier, were aiding the outfit to regroup.

Further, the memo requested all police stations to verify the authenticity of the information provided by the source while asking the police and intelligence to closely monitor the movement of surrendered cadres, known business associates, overground workers of the outfit as well as sympathizers to see if the inputs held any water.

All PS’ have also been asked to intensify operations, raids, mobile patrolling, area domination, and foot patrolling regularly to

deny the GNLA any chance of becoming a force in the region again.

Even as people panicked and raised questions at the authorities, a highlyplaced police source had a different take on the matter and felt that an internal inquiry on who leaked the memo needed to be undertaken.

“Our officers or whoever leaked this memo needs to be questioned.

This is an internal memo meant to check the authenticity of the source information that has been provided.

It is a claim that has been made and is a reality until it can be proven otherwise.

The situation that has now been created is one of panic which can be used by criminal elements to extort in the name of the outfit. These kinds of leaks need to stop.

It is a given that we need to be vigilant and ensure the dark days for Garo Hills remain behind us,” the highly-placed source said.

UDP wins elections Sohiong assembly seat

SHILLONG, MAY 13: The United Democratic Party (UDP), a key constituent of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), defeated its ruling ally, the National People’s Party in the adjourned Sohïong assembly election.

Synshar Roy Kupar Lyngdoh Thabah of the United Democratic Party defeated the National People’s Party candidate and former cabinet minister Samlin Malngiang by a margin of 3,422 votes.

While Thabah secured 16,679 votes, Malngiang gar nered 13,257 votes.

Thabah managed to secure 51.86 per cent of the total votes polled.

Polls were held on May 10 while the result was declared on Saturday following the counting of votes at the State Central Library, Shillong.

With the win, UDP’s strength in the 60-member House increased to 12, while NPP has 28 members.

Congress candidate S Osborne Kharjana came a distant third by securing 1,762 votes.

It began in the United States in the early 20th century at the initiative of Anna Jarvis a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War. Anna created Mother’s day Work Clubs to address public health issues. In 1914, the 28th president of the United States, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honour mothers. The dictionary explains the word ‘mother’ as one who has given birth. All the pains of childbirth that a mother undergoes is forgotten when she holds the child with immense joy. A mother will go to any length to feed and fend her child. This biological process results in a psychological bond between the mother and child. Attributes of a good mother are –godliness, compassion, patience, thrift, loyalty and the list goes on. As a teacher, a mother is considered as the first teacher of the child in the world. As a servant, she is the very embodiment of love, of sacrifice, or selfless service to her children and of forbearance. As a companion, she is a friend and companion. Motherhood presents us with a model of loyalty and dedication. She is faithful to her husband and children because she is faithful to God. She also reaches out to help those in need. Her inward adorning of character and integrity of heart is what makes her most attractive because inward beauty never fades but becomes more precious with time. The biblical command, to train up a child in the way he or she should go(prov.22:6)is a call to create a strong foundation of God consciousness-personality that will stand in good stead in times of trouble. To do this, the bible also calls on mothers to be virtuous and to pattern their character after God’s design (prov.31:1-10).

A woman who adopts and raises a child can be as much as any mother or even more. There are many examples in contemporary world-Mother Teresa of Calcutta and several in Nagaland, among which the most well know was late Zaputüo who ran the Kohima Orphanage since the 70s. Ungodliness in contemporary society has created rebelliousness and destroyed family values. Though both fathers and mothers equally share the responsibility of making a home, mothers play a prominent role in the development of spiritual values in the family. It may be loosely explained that a mother who is involved in mothering is a good mother while a mother is not mothering is a bad mother. besides caring, nurturing and protecting her children, a good mother is an exemplary wife. She brings all the family together.

The opposite is true of a bad mother who neglects her responsibility in the upbringing of her children and her husband. being virtuous also means being wise in being a good mother, wife, housekeeper and handling finances. It is true that a virtuous mother inspires her family to love and honour God. On Mother’s day, children can consider few ways through which they can honour them. First, honor them with obedience and secondly, show love by deeds and not by the presents.

It is the eye of the soul which looks out either toward God or toward what we regard as the highest standard. This explains why conscience is different in different people. If I am in the habit of continually holding God’s standard in front of me, my conscience will always direct me to God’s perfect law and indicate what I should do. The question is, will I obey? I have to make an effort to keep my conscience so sensitive that I can live without any offense toward anyone. I should be living in such perfect harmony with God’s Son that the spirit of my mind is being renewed through every circumstance of life, and that I may be able to quickly “prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2 ; also see Ephesians 4:23).

God always instructs us down to the last detail. Is my ear sensitive enough to hear even the softest whisper of the Spirit, so that I know what I should do? “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God…” (Ephesians 4:30). He does not speak with a voice like thunder— His voice is so gentle that it is easy for us to ignore. And the only thing that keeps our conscience sensitive to Him is the habit of being open to God on the inside. When you begin to debate, stop immediately. Don’t ask, “Why can’t I do this?” You are on the wrong track. There is no debating possible once your conscience speaks. Whatever it is— drop it, and see that you keep your inner vision clear.

In the current scenario, Mother’s Day has become quite a big Celebration. After all, mom is the source of life. This day is celebrated to honour the mother of the family, motherhood in general, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in our society. A mother feeds us, cares for our needs and makes us a good human being. She helps us in our studies and also encourages our talents. Her whole life revolves around her children.

She undergoes immense pain while delivering a child. Yet, she can never see her child in pain or any problem. She is the protective shield and safeguards her child in all situations. She spends sleepless nights while raising her child but never complains.

Her feelings, emotions, love, care, and affection are completely incomparable and selfless.

Mother as Teacher: A mother is our first teacher.

She teaches us to walk, to talk and to eat. She teaches us the basic manners and etiquettes. A mother feeds us, cares for our needs and makes us good human being.

A Jewish proverb rightly affirms what most of us have experienced: “A mother understands what a child does not say.” Indeed there exist a dynamic between mother and children. Mothers can

hear sentences in the silences of their children. God has given mothers the special gift of intuition because it gives her a strong sense of what is right for her children, what they are good at, how they may excel in the future what gifts and abilities she needs to make sure are developed in their lives as God intended.

Conclusion: After having said about mother, I would like to conclude by saying that words always fall short when you talk about the sacrifice and love of a mother. A mother is definitely next to god or rather above god as she is the one who teaches us to believe in God and have faith in him.

Is Pakistan deading for greater civil unrest?

T

he dramatic arrest of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan inside a courthouse in the capital Islamabad by security forces has escalated political tensions in the country to new heights.

The chain of events that followed this arrest was somewhat hard to imagine in Pakistan. Mr Khan’s arrest triggered rare pushback against the military, the country’s most powerful institution. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters held demonstrations across the country.

Vandalising the residences of the Corps Commander in Lahore, attacking General Headquarters (GHQ) of the Army in Rawalpindi, and setting ablaze military installations at various other places.

This kind of anti-army posturing is unprecedented and unheard of in Pakistan. These are the same people, who, in the past, being sick of corrupt politicians, used to welcome the army’s martial law. But time has changed now the army is witnessing its lowest popularity among the masses. The former Prime Minister’s arrest is seen as an action not by the civilian government of Shehbaz Sharif but of the Pakistan Army and this has enraged the people against the

establishment. Presently, anti-army sentiments are rapidly spreading in Pakistani society. People continue to voice their opinion against the military on social media. Credit goes to Khan for weaving a successful narrative through numerous social media platforms against the Pakistan army and how it was keeping a corrupt government in power. All efforts by the army to neutralize this onslaught against it have proved futile. Khan has been successful in even passing the blame for the failed assassination attempt on him on Major General Faisal Naseer of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

This public naming of a senior serving officer outraged the army leadership and it evoked a harsh reaction from the InterServices Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the military. The arrest of Imran Khan is also viewed in connection with this blaming as many political analysts believe that Khan has crossed the army’s “red line”. This is an alarming situation for the army. Because Pakistan is a praetorian state and the army has performed a praetorian rule type role during most of its existence.

This is evident from the fact that

since Pakistan’s inception in 1947, no prime minister has ever completed an entire five-year parliamentary term, and generals have directly ruled the country on several occasions. The biggest political achievement of Imran Khan since now is that he is able to showcase the top leadership of the army as the power-hungry generals among the masses. Pakistan’s deep state has always pushed the narrative that most of the political leaders are corrupt and are solely responsible for all hardships faced by the country.

And the army is the only organization that can bring order and can ensure stability and security. But the matter of fact is that long military rule has left intractable and spillover impacts on the politics, economy, and foreign policy of Pakistan. The most enduring repercussion of the long military rules in Pakistan is its diminished state constitution.

With this much charged-up environment with so many prevalent antiestablishment feelings. It seems that common Pakistanis are losing faith in the Army and considering it just as another political organization.

With the ongoing political confrontation and increasing polarization in the country, the

balance of power still remains with the military but it is coming under immense pressure. In the past, the army has gone away with any experiment they did with democracy like- direct martial law, the guided democracy concept of Field Marshal Ayub Khan, and General Bajwa’s hybrid form of government. But now common people’s patience is running out because of various reasons like- anger with the political elite, rising inflation, misgovernance, and current political instability. And people are in no mood to tolerate any kind of political arrangement which doesn’t take into account people’s will. The victories of Khan’s party PTI in local elections in the financial capital Karachi and the most populous province of Punjab have been seen as a litmus test for the national mood. This has emboldened Imran Khan who is insisting on general elections as he knows that he will secure a sweeping victory.

Also, all the pressure tactics used by the establishment on Imran Khan until now have made him more popular rather than deterring him. Also, it should be noted that Mr. Khan’s large support base comes from Punjab which is also

the core of the Pakistan Army. It is one thing for the army to massacre other ethnic groups like-Baloch, Bengalis, Sindhis, and Pashtuns but quite another to do the same in Punjab. This makes it very difficult for the army to use a massive crackdown on the PTI chief and his supporters. But with so much blood already spilled the army will lose face if it can’t now keep Khan in jail for some good time by getting him a prison sentence through a judicial process. It’s a hard reality that any strict action against Imran Khan will only increase his support base and showcase the army in a bad light. This only adds to the dilemma of the establishment as they don’t want to meet with the same fate as the military junta of Myanmar where the Junta is witnessing a civil war against its rule. But if any reconciliation is not done between Pak Army and Imran Khan then this confrontation will only intensify and may turn into a major civil unrest.

VIP Security Cover : A symbol of supremacy

IP culture has been prevalent since ancient times in India as well as in other parts of the world. Such people have always dominated the administration. These include the ruler to the lower level personnel. This culture has continued to flourish even after the end of the monarchy and the establishment of a democratic system, and has expanded extensively in recent decades.

A fixed number of security personnel are deployed by the government for the security of declared as well as unannounced VVIPs and high-risk individuals. From the Prime Minister’s SPG security cover to Z-plus, Z, Y-plus, Y, X category security, there is a provision of one or two security personnel in the name of VIP security as prescribed by the Central and State Governments.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) have been entrusted with the duty of protection to VIPs. According to the Bu-

reau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D), over 60,000 security personnel were deployed in India for the protection of more than 19,000 current and former ministers, MPs, MLAs, judges, bureaucrats and some other VIPs in the year 2019. This number has considerably increased significantly in recent years.

Along with this, the facility of more than 30000 vehicles is being made available in this work, on which more than 12000 crore rupees of public’s hard earned money are being spent. Thousands of crores of rupees are being spent separately on these security personnel for their accommodation, food, transport, health, etc.

Interestingly, states like West Bengal, Bihar, Punjab, which are witnessing minor incidents of insurgency or disturbance, have the highest number of protected dignitaries; while states like Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Manipur and Chhattisgarh, which are most affected by militancy and terrorism, have lower number of important people get-

ting the facility of security personnel.

In fact, on the basis of the report of Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) at the Central level, there is a provision of providing security to a person by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Similarly, on the basis of the report of agencies like the State Intelligence Department, there is a provision of providing security to a person by the State Governments. But it is a general perception that the related reports are motivated by manipulation and political interference.

The inputs generated by the vigilance agencies are neither put in the public domain nor open to scrutiny through any other agency.

Accordingly, the criteria other than the actual situation are set by the Central and State Administrations.

In most of the states, some politicians, actors and bureaucrats are carrying heavy security personnel just to prove themselves different from common people.

According to the gov-

ernment provision, around 55 security personnel are deployed in Z-plus, 22 in Z, 11 in Y-plus, 8 in Y and 2 - 3 in X category security cover. The Z-Plus security cover has a provision of 55 security personnel including 10 commandos and five bulletproof vehicles. Z Cover has a provision of 22 security personnel including National Security Guard (NSG) Commandos. Y-plus has 11 security personnel, in which one CRPF commander and 4 constables are stationed at the residence and 6 personal security officers are deployed in three shifts with VIPs concerned. There are 8 security personnel in Y cover, in which a commander and 4 constables are deployed at the residence and 3 PSOs are deployed with the concerned VIPs in three shifts.

In X Cover, 3 PSOs are posted in three shifts with the respective VIPs. After independence, Home Minister Sardar Patel had suggested to the Prime Minister that apart from a few policemen, there was no need to deploy more

than two security personnel in the houses of ministers from the point of view of security. But after his death there was no one to pay attention to these sensitive issues. Now the designation of a person as VIP is on the rise just because of his/ her political and official position.

Apart from the financial implications, VIP movement causes physical inconvenience and discomfort to the common motorists and people. Ordinary people faces a lot of problem due to unending VIP movements on the streets, roads and highways and people are virtually stranded without any fault of their own. VIP movement abandons the flow of vehicles on the busy roads, halts the movement of the pedestrians, hinders the movement of serious patients to the hospitals, causes mental depression to those who are already disturbed due to their hectic work and daily routine.

The behavior of the escort police is very rude. These VIPs are not above the

law and hence, they have no right to make others life miserable just for their own sake.

Last year, a positive initiative has been taken by the Punjab government by withdrawing the security of 429 alleged VIPs and the amount saved from this can be spent in public welfare works. Central and other state governments should also take this initiative.

There is no doubt that the present day security cordon given to the so-called VIPs in the name of their security are nothing but a show of supremacy. This highly expensive system is being implemented at the cost of public welfare of the people living below the poverty line. This monarchical as well as the unproductive system must be scrapped and if a person demands security cover, he should bear the entire cost.

Assam-M’laya border tensions erupt again

D I P H U, M AY 1 3 (AGENCIES): The Assam-Meghalaya border continues to remain restive, with tensions reported in the Tadolangso region of West Karbi Anglong, according to media reports.

On May 10, miscreants from Meghalaya allegedly attacked locals of the Am-ih village and burnt a hut on agricultural land.

The Karbi Students Association (KSA) of the Hamren regional committee and the central executive committee also visited the Am-ih to take note of the situation.

The MLA of Baithalangson, Rupsing Teron, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council EM Rina Terangpi, Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) Headsing Rongphar also visited the site to take stock of the situation.

angso, Am-ih, Langkeroi, Tahpat, Rongkhelan, Mujong, Umpu, Umcherra, Rongpangbong, Umbaso and Arting will meet Chief Executive Member (CEM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Tuliram Ronghang to apprise him of the inter-state border problems and continuous attack to villagers of border areas by people from Meghalaya and to provide security.

Speaking before the media, Mirjeng Kro, vice president, Karbi Students Association (KSA) said, “We want to request the government of Meghalaya to stop instigating their people to attack our people living in border areas. We have seen that miscreants from Meghalaya are backed by the authority. In yesterday’s incident, one of our brothers was brutally attacked.”

“We are not cowards.

We can retaliate, but we are still maintaining peace so that the situation doesn’t get worse,” Kro added.

Miscreants hurl petrol bomb at Karbi Bhawan in Shillong

SHILLONG, MAY 13 (AGENCIES): In another untoward development regarding the recent incident on the Assam - Meghalaya border, unknown miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the Karbi Bhawan located in the capital city of Meghalaya in the night, according to media reports.

This is believed to be a repercussion of the incident that took place on the border of the Karbi Anglong district of Assam and the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya earlier during the day.

The incident was confirmed by the Superintendent of Police for the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. He also mentioned that an investigation has been initiated to nab the miscreants involved in the act of arson, but no FIR was registered in this regard.

They also set fire to an outpost and injured two locals who had to be shifted to a hospital for proper treatment. The locals from the Meghalaya side alleged that miscreants from

the Assam side entered the Khanduli village and pelted stones along with setting fire to two huts. This incident comes at a time when the two state governments are working actively to solve the problems regarding the interstate border. A discussion has been initiated at the highest levels of police and administration of both states regarding how to defuse the situation.

The Superintendents of Police from both districts visited the locations and took stock of the situation while appealing to the people to maintain peace.

RBI Guv says ‘monetary policy on right track’

M U M B A I , M AY 1 3 (IANS): With the latest official data indicating a cooling off in the headline inflation to 4.7 per cent in April, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said that it proves the monetary policy is on the right track, here on Friday.

Terming the official data as a very satisfying development, Das refused to comment if the release of the numbers would lead to change of the policy stance or the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) becoming less hawkish.

He preferred to say that all this would be clear on June 8 when the next policy review will come up.

NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (AGENCIES): The Securities and exchange Board of India has come out with a consultation paper to regulate platforms offering fractional ownership of real estate assets. Such fractional ownership of real estate assets is proposed to be brought as MSM REITs under Sebi (Real Estate Investment Trusts) Regulations, 2014.

The regulator has invited comments by May 27.

The previous two-three years have seen mushrooming of web based platforms offering fractional ownership of real estate assets.

These platforms provide investors an option to invest in buildings and office spaces, including warehouses, shopping centres and conference centres. The minimum investment in these fractional ownership platforms (FOPs) ranges from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh. The underlying real estate assets offered on FOPs are similar to the real estate or property defined under the REIT regulations.

The proposals say that any person or entity (including

FOPs) which facilitate or have facilitated fractional investment in real estate by any structure will have to register with Sebi for operating as MSM REIT. Entities which do not meet the eligibility criteria or do not register within the given timelines shall be required to wind-up operations and cease to operate.

MSM REIT will be set up as a trust and have parties such as trustee, sponsor and investment manager. Through FOPs, the cost of acquisition of real estate is split among several investors, who invest in securities issued by a special purpose vehicle (SPV) established by the FOP. Such SPV purchases the real estate asset. Some of the FOPs are operated by real estate agents or brokers (before the property is purchased) and as property managers thereafter. For the former, some FOPs may have registered themselves as real estate agents under the provisions of the state-level Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016 (RERA) if any, as applicable.

SAN FRANCISCO, MAY 13 (IANS): Elon Musk-run Tesla has recalled over 1.1 million electric vehicles (EVs), or nearly all the vehicles it has sold in China, in response to a braking problem. According to Engadget, the lack of an option to set regenerative braking intensity and receive notifications with a sustained accelerator pedal press could lead to owners misusing the pedals (as they can’t hear a revving engine) and crashing.

Tesla said it will fix the issue through a software update that both tweaks the default regenerative braking level and lets users customise the system’s strength.

Tesla will also notify drivers who press the accelerator for a long time.

The recall applies to Model 3 and Model Y vehicles manufactured in China between January 2019 and April this year, as well as some imported Model 3, Model S, and Model X vehicles, the report said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (AGENCIES): Shares of companies that were reblanaced, added and deleted to the MSCI India indexes, including the Small Cap index, were in focus in trade on Friday.

Among the prominent stocks to be dropped by the global index provider Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) - Adani Transmission and Adani Total Gas hit their respective 5 per cent lower limits at Rs 871 and Rs 812, respctively on the BSE. At 11:00 am, Adani Transmission was down 3.5 per cent at Rs 885. Nearly 69,000 shares had been traded on the BSE till then.

Adani Total Gas, on the other hand, remained locked at the 5 per cent lower limit on trades of around 3.66-lakh shares, with pending selling orders of another 6.5 lakh shares, data shows. Meanwhile, the S&P BSE Sensex had recouped from a low of 61,578, and was down 70odd points at 61,835.

The deletion from the MSCI India index is likely

to result in selling worth Rs 3,200 crore ($390 million) in these two counters by passive sellers. The changes to the index constituents will be effective as per the closing price on May 31, MSCI said in its release.

MSCI has said if these two Adani group stocks get locked in their lower trading limit for a cumulative 5 minutes on May 31, the deletion will take place at zero value. If not, the index provider will use the official closing price.

Further, reports suggested that Kotak Bank is likely to be the biggest beneficiary of the MSCI India Index rejig. The shares of private lender could see inflows up to $810 million.

The stock, however, traded flat around at Rs 1,956 on the BSE on Friday.

Max Healthcare is the other major beneficiary, according to reports, which can see infows to the tune of $295 million as per Nuvama Research, soared 6 per cent to a high of Rs 513. Nearly 6.3-lakh shares were traded till late morning deals.

BENGALURU, MAY 13 (PTI): Making an emotional appeal to voters in his home turf on the last day of campaigning, Mallikarjun Kharge had asked them to take pride in the fact that he as a “bhoomi putra” of Karnataka had been made AICC president, and sought a win for the Congress in that name.

It looks like he struck an instant chord with the people, with the voters rewarding the Congress with a comfortable majority of 136 seats in the 224 member Karnataka Legislative Assembly for which elections were held on May 10, and the votes counted on Saturday.

Many party leaders credit Khage for the win mainly for camping in the state and mentoring the party at every level in the run up to polls.

Lot seemed to be riding on the octogenarian leader, who extensively travelled across the state addressing rallies and campaigning for Congress candidates. In all he addressed 24 public meetings and held one road show.

Kharge is only the second leader, after Jagjivan Ram, to be the Congress President from the Dalit community, which constitutes about 24 per cent of the population across more than 100 caste groups in the state.

STOCKHOLM, MAY 13 (PTI): The Indo-Pacific is a complex and differentiated landscape that is best understood through more intensive engagement, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said here on Saturday.

Jaishankar arrived in Stockholm on Saturday on his first visit as the External Affairs Minister to Sweden to participate in the second EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum (EIPMF).

Addressing the EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial meeting, he said a generous and strategic approach that

caters to economic asymmetries will surely enhance the appeal of the strategically important region. The meeting is taking place at a time when the Indo-Pacific region has seen aggressive actions by China’s military in the South China and the East China Sea. “IndoPacific itself is increasingly central to the direction of global politics. Among the issues that it throws up are the problems inherent in the established model of globalisation,” he said.

“The more European Union and Indo-Pacific deal

with each other the stronger will be the respective appreciation of multipolarity,” he said. Jaishankar said a multipolar world, which the EU prefers, is feasible only by a multipolar Asia.

“In such an engagement with the Indo-Pacific, the EU will naturally seek like-minded partners. India is certainly among them,” he said.

“The Indo-Pacific is a complex and differentiated landscape that is best understood through more intensive engagement,” he said.

Indo-Pacific and India and the European Union need a regular, comprehensive and candid dialogue, not just limited to the crisis of the day, Jaishankar said.

He said few Indian governments have invested as much energy and effort in engaging the European Union and its member states as the current one.

He said de-risking the global economy now involves both more reliable and resilient supply chains, as well as promoting trust and transparency in the digital domain.

NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (PTI): The Congress’ victory in the Karnataka assembly polls is likely to help the party get its candidates elected in three of the four Rajya Sabha seats from the state falling vacant next year.

The tenure of four Rajya Sabha members from the state -- Syed Nasir Hussain, G C Chandrashekhar and L Hanumanthaiah of the Congress and Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar of the BJP -- ends in 2024.

The BJP, which won 65 of the 224 assembly seats in the state on Saturday, will be able to get its one nominee elected to the Rajya Sabha next year.

The BJP currently has six Rajya Sabha members from Karnataka, including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Of the 12 Rajya Sabha seats from the state, the Congress has five members and the Janata Dal (Secular) one.

Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda is the lone JDS member in the Rajya Sabha.

JAIPUR, MAY 13 (PTI): Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said on Saturday that he would have spoken to BJP leader and his predecessor Vasundhara Raje hardly 15 times in the past 15 years as he sought to dismiss the allegation of collusion with her.

He also said that people misinterpreted his statement made in Dholpur that BJP leaders Vasundhara Raje and Kailash Meghwal had helped him survive the 2020 revolt by his then deputy Sachin Pilot and some Congress MLAs, saying that it was something that he had heard.

Gehlot said that his gover nment follows a policy of “zero tolerance’ against corruption.

The chief minister’s remarks came amid Sachin Pilot’s ongoing “Jan Sangharsh Padayatra” from Ajmer to Jaipur which he had announced on Tuesday on the is-

sues of corruption and recruitment exam paper leak cases. Pilot started the 125-km yatra from Ajmer on Thursday and it will conclude in Jaipur on Monday.

The move of Pilot to take out the five-day yatra came after Gehlot’s allegations made in Dholpur on Sunday that the rebel Congress MLAs had taken money from the BJP to topple his government.

Reacting to Gehlot’s statement that Raje had helped in saving his government, Pilot had even went on to say in a press conference in Jaipur on Tuesday that “it appeared from Gehlot’s statement that his leader is Vasundhara Raje, and not Sonia Gandhi.”

Today Gehlot said in a public function in Nagaur that there is a vast difference in his thinking and that of Raje and that they would have talked hardly 15 times in the last 15 years.

Mothers with ‘special touch’

DIMAPUR: Cambridge academic content dictionary defines Mother as, “to treat someone with kindness and affection and try to protect that person from danger or difficulty”.

Mothers are instinctively the first person that a child feel safe and connected. Researchers say that when the foetus is inside the stomach of the mother the umbilical relays all the information from the mother to the foetus and vice versa.

To mark Mother’s Day 2023, Nagaland Post spoke with a mother with special needs child.

1. What was your first reaction when you discovered that your child is special?

Ans: For someone, who was raised sheltered, provided and protected with little knowledge of suffering, worry and problems, to realized that her child is a special need, was a moment of jolt.

But it taught me that life was unpredictable and that it can turn the oblivion into awareness.

2. How was your journey from the time your child was born?

Ans: Motherhood is

not easy but to be a mother to a special child is another journey. I am compelled to take those extra miles and efforts so that I don’t fail or lag behind in the race of motherhood. Sometimes it was exhausting not just physically but emotionally too. But at the end of the day the reward is the pride and solace I get of being able to use the overall strength.

3. Did you get support from anyone while raising a special child?

Ans: I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by a family that never shies away when it comes to extend a helping hand. I am blessed with a supportive husband who equally contributes in taking care of our child. My in laws and a family never refuses whenever I reach out to them.

4. Was there a time when you felt like giving up?

Ans: I would be lying if I said NO. Sometimes when it gets hard, I questioned myself “why Me” and “what If “. Many unhealthy thoughts randomly come into my mind but I realized that all these did not change or take away my

circumstances.

Eventually, it taught me a very important life lesson. Somewhere I am grateful that I am a mother to a special need not because I enjoy the journey and that what made me who I am today.

5. What do you look forward to in life?

Ans: My child and I have come a long way and we have fallen into a very comfortable routine. I am hoping and striving to make his life more comfortable.

The challenges will never cease but my positive attitude and outlook have never changed and has been constant and consistent.

6. What message do you have for mothers with special children?

Ans: To all the mothers of special needs, consider yourselves as strong warriors. We have been hardened by time, pain, helplessness, despair and struggle. Yet today we are still standing stronger in mind and faith. It is not an easy journey there will be days where we will doubt whether we will see a day of comfort and rest but remember only resilience will prevail.

Above all else, armour

yourself with prayer and cover your struggle with faith.

Remember we are not alone, but blessed and lovingly watched over by a higher being with a higher purpose.

In conversation with founder ‘Moms We Care’ Kikruseno Kimho Khuvung 1. What is Moms We Care and how did it started?

Kikruseno: “Moms We Care” is a small support group for community mothers formed in 2021.

It started with my motherhood journey that is after the birth of my baby. It was about creating awareness, informing the different stages of emotions one experience like PPD and vice - versa giving support.

We have now pregnant ladies and women of different identities where Moms We Care extend support and if professional help arises, arranged accordingly.

2. Why do you think that there is a need for a society or organization like this?

Kikruseno: I believe in order to have a holistic society; every foundation starts from family- home-

caregivers. A healthy parent is equivalent to a healthy family.

Therefore, as caregiver ought to be mentally sound, intellectual equipped and spiritually this kind of organisation was needed to create awareness.

3. What are the activities of Moms We Care?

Kikruseno: Moms We Care have activities that touch areas of spiritual responsibilities as caregivers. Play-dates with family, mothers one-on-one time etc. and we plan to induct more programmes depending on the needs.

4. How can one get involved, is there any criteria?

Kikruseno: There is no criteria, one can follow our page on Instagram for timely updates and thanks to Nagaland Post for giving a platform to us. I prayerfully wish that every district in Nagaland must have this kind of a support group for mothers.

Workshop on NAS 2021 & FLS 2022

KO H I M A , M AY 1 3 ( N P N ) : A o n e - d ay workshop for post National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2021 and Foundational Learning Study 2022 (FLS) was conducted by conducted by Nagaland Education Mission Society (NEMS), Samagra Shiksha Nagaland at Capital Convention Hall on May 11.

Speaking at the workshop, commissioner and secretary, School Education, SCERT and vice chairman NEMS, Kevileno, informed the NAS was an assessment to the health of the education system in the country, and in Nagaland, the assessment has been carried out in 910 schools, involving 507 teachers and 28,995 students.

Kevileno also emphasized on the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN) which focused on the improving foundational

years of schooling where by the time a child reaches grade 3, they would be competent enough to read, solve simple maths and gain the grade level competencies. In that context, she informed that the FLS was carried out to assess the learning outcome of the grade 3, in 75 schools, involving 146 teachers and 669 children.

She emphasized that the teachers and administrators were the custodians of the children placed under their care and encouraged them to perform the role while guiding the future nation builders.

Director, SCERT, Keviraleu Kerhuo while delivering the welcome address said that as per NAS 2021, decline of students percentage of class 3 declined by 10% to 49% in class 5. It further declined to 41.9% in class 8 and 37.8% in class 10 and the Social-Group Wise Performance of ST/SC and OBC categories remained lower than that of students from

the general category.

Kerhuo also informed that there was a decline in almost all subjects.

Therefore, as a crucial step towards strengthening efforts for Foundational Literacy ad Numeracy (FLN), a large-scale Foundational Learning Study (FLS) was undertaken by NCERT in March 2022, Kerhuo said.

She also highlighted that the NAS 2021 was conducted on November 12, 2021 by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) as Assessment administrator for Grade 3, 5, 8 & 10 students of state Government schools, Government aided schools, private unaided recognised schools and central government schools, while at the State level, NAS 2021 was initiated by the Directorate of School Education (DoSE) with Timothy Thong, then Joint Director, DoSE as the Nodal Officer, and the selection of sampled schools were based on UDISE+2019-20 data.

Drugs worth Rs 12K cr seized

NEW DELHI/KOCHI, MAY 13 (IANS): In a major haul, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Saturday said it has seized around 2,500 kg high purity methamphetamine valued at Rs 12,000 crore in the Indian water, and detained a suspected Pakistani national in this connection. It was a joint operation between the Indian Navy and the NCB officials. According to the NCB, the Indian authorities were on alert after receiving a tip-off, and based on that input, a vessel was identified and was intercepted by the Indian Navy. The suspected Pakistani national was nabbed after intercepting a “mother ship” transporting drugs, as part of “Operation Samudragupt” which aims to combat maritime trafficking of drugs originating from Afghanistan.

Sex rackets busted at spa centres in MP

B H O PA L , M A Y 1 3 (IANS): Madhya Pradesh police on Saturday claimed to have busted sex rackets being run at several spa centres in Singrauli district and rescued over a dozen women, including minors. Singrauli SP Yusuf Kureshi told the press that raids were conducted on the basis of complaints received from various people. Kureshi said that women were trafficked from Odisha, Kolkata, Assam and Nagaland.

CBI arrests railway officer in bribe case

NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (IANS): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested a Senior Instructor of Western Railway, Ahmedabad (Gujarat) for demanding and accepting bribe from a man. A senior CBI official said that a case was registered against T.R. Meena, a Senior Instructor, Diesel Shed, Sabarmati, Western Railway, Ahmedabad for demanding a bribe from a man for forwarding his Mutual Transfer Application to the DRM. The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe from the complainant.

Army foils infiltration bid in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, MAY 13 (IANS): A junior commissioned officer (JCO) was injured on Saturday as the Army foiled an infiltration bid on the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector.

Defence sources said that the JCO received minor injuries when alert troops of the Army foiled the infiltration bid on the LoC in Uri sector of Baramulla district. Earlier, a defence spokesman said, “There was an exchange of fire between militants and own troops. The Pakistan side tried to fly a quadcopter over the incident site, but on being fired at by the Indian side it quickly withdrew. A search operation is underway in the area”.

HYDERABAD, MAY 13 (IANS): A police constable murdered his wife by slitting her throat after a quarrel over some family issues. Constable K. Rajkumar chased his wife Shoba (40) and slit her throat with a knife at their residence at Gautami Nagar in Hyderabad on Friday. The shocking incident occurred under the limits of the Vanasthalipuram police station. The couple’s elder son Swatik (15) got injured while trying to stop his father. On a complaint filed by Swatik, the police have registered a case and launched a hunt for the constable, who escaped after the killing.

BJP sweeps municipal polls in UP L u c k n o w, M AY 1 3 (AGENCIES): The ruling BJP swept the mayoral elections in Uttar Pradesh winning the posts in 16 of the 17 municipal corporations on Saturday. Official results for the Varanasi mayoral election are expected later on Saturday.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who claimed victory in all the 17 municipal corporations, thanked the people of Uttar Pradesh and congratulated BJP workers for forming a “triple-engine government” in the state after the party’s “biggest victory” in the urban local body polls.

The party’s candidates won in Lucknow, Ayodhya, Jhansi, Bareilly, MathuraVrindavan, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Prayagraj, Aligarh, Shahjahanpur, Ghaziabad, Agra, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Firozabad and Meerut.

The urban local body polls were held in two phases -- on May 4 and May 11 -- to elect 17 mayors and 1,401 corporators.

Nineteen corporators were elected unopposed, according to the State Election Commission.

Adityanath had led the campaign for the urban local body polls, holding several election meetings across the state. During the campaign, he had repeatedly urged voters to add a third wheel or third engine to the “doubleengine” government in Uttar Pradesh.

In the Lucknow Municipal Corporation, the BJP’s Sushma Kharkwal won the mayoral election. According to the State Election Commission, Kharkwal bagged 5,02,660 votes while Vandana Mishra of the Samajwadi Party got 298519 votes.

In the temple town of Ayodhya, BJP candidate Girish Pati Tripathi won the mayoral election, defeating his nearest rival Ashish of the Samajwadi Party by a margin of 35,638 votes.

In Jhansi, the BJP’s Bihari Lal Arya bagged 1,23,503 votes and defeated his nearest rival Arvind Kumar of the Congress by a margin of 83,587 votes.

The Bahujan Samaj Par ty candidate came third, while the Samajwadi Party secured the fourth position.

AAP wrests Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat from Congress CHANDIGARH, MAY 13 (PTI): The AAP on Saturday breached the Congress stronghold in Punjab as its candidate Sushil Rinku defeated his nearestrival and the grand old party’s nominee Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll by a margin of 58,691 votes. Losing its citadel has come as a big setback for the Congress which was hoping to retain the seat.

The win gives the ruling AAP in Punjab and Delhi its only member in the Lok Sabha.

“I thank voters of Jalandhar for giving a huge mandate to AAP,” he said.

“Not for 11 months, we will go ahead with a vision for the next five years,” Rinku said in Jalandhar.

Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi, who was also backed by the Mayawatiled BSP, was at the third spot while BJP nominee Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal was at the fourth spot.

Sukhi polled 1,58,445 while Atwal, who failed to save his security deposit,

got 1,34,800 votes. Gurjant Singh, the candidate of the Simranjit Singh Mannled Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), which won the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat last year, secured just 20,366 votes.

In the bypoll, the AAP got a vote share of 34.05 per cent, Congress 27.44 per cent, SAD 17.85 per cent and the BJP 15.19 per cent. Counting of votes for the seat, the polling for which was held on May 10, began at 8 am amid tight security arrangements.

AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal hailed the victory as “historic” and said it is people’s recognition of the good work done by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his government in Punjab.

High-level meeting shortlists three candidates for CBI Director’s post

by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in Odisha is back on a winning streak ahead of the assembly and Lok Sabha polls next year.

Backed by the popularity of the chief minister and sympathy wave, the BJD’s rookie candidate Dipali Das defeated her nearest BJP rival Tankadhar Tripathy by 48,721 votes, securing nearly 3,000 more votes than what her father, health minister Naba Kisore Das, did in 2019. His assassination necessitated the by-election in Jharsuguda. The regional party has won six of the seven by-polls held in the state after the 2019 elections.

The only defeat it suffered was in Dhamnagar when the BJP retained the seat in November last year.

In Jharsuguda, Dipali Das secured a total of 1,07,198 votes receiving 60.93 per cent of the votes polled, while Tripathy bagged 58,477 votes (33.24 per cent). Congress candidate Tarun Pandey came third with 4,496 votes

In the statement released on Friday by the ministry, which is run by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), two Palestinian men were killed and five civilians were injured in the attacks on the Al-Nasser neighbourhood, Xinhua news agency reported.

Cyclone Mocha, one of the most powerful cyclones seen in Bangladesh in nearly two decades, is predicted to barrel towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar border on Sunday.

“Cyclone ‘Mocha’ is coming. We have kept the cyclone centres and taken all types of preparations to tackle it,” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said.

Bangladeshi authorities have set up 55 shelters at Bhasan Char offshore island, where nearly 30,000 of the Rohingya refugees have been relocated from the mainland.

Bangladesh exclusively dedicated the Bhasan Char to the Rohingyas though most of them live in the mainland of Cox’s Bazar adjacent to Myanmar borders. Most of them fled to neighbouring Bangladesh after a military-led crackdown in Myanmar in 2017.

“The district administration has turned social, educational, and religious institutions as makeshift shelters alongside 576 des-

ignated cyclone shelters in Cox’s Bazar to accommodate over half a million people, deputy commissioner or administrative chief of the coastal district Muhammad Shahin Imran told reporters.

Imran said around 8,600 Red Crescent volunteers have joined a campaign asking people to relocate even as the district administration has mobilised transports to carry them to shelters.

“This cyclone (Mocha) is the most powerful storm since Cyclone Sidr of 2007,” chief meteorologist Azizur Rahman said.

WARSAW, MAY 13 (AP): Poland’s Defense Ministry said Saturday that it has detected an object in Polish airspace that flew in from the direction of Belarus, and that it’s probably an observation balloon. The ministry tweeted that radar contact with the object was lost near Rypin, a town in central Poland 143 kilometers (89) northwest of the capital, Warsaw. A search was launched in the vicinity of Rypin involving a helicopter, a drone and ground

groups from the Territorial Defense Forces, a press officer with the Operational Command of the Armed Forces, Capt. Ewa Zlotnicka, told the television broadcaster TVN24.

The object was spotted Friday around 8:30 p.m. local time near Bialowieza, which is near Poland’s border with Belarus. Radar monitoring was carried out, but at around 12:30 a.m.

Saturday, the object ceased to be visible, Zlotnicka said in a phone interview with

the private TV station.

The development reported Saturday follows two other known incursions into Poland’s airspace since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which lies on Poland’s eastern border. In November, two Polish men were killed when a missile landed in eastern Poland. constant prayer, paid witness to by his many public appeals and by his continued invoking of the Lord for peace, since February of last year,” the Vatican said, a reference to the invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, by Russia’s military.

“Both agreed on the need to continue humanitarian efforts” to help the population, the Holy See’s statement added. “The pope underlined in particular the urgent need for ‘humanitarian gestures’ toward the most fragile persons, innocent victims of the conflict,” the statement said.

The findings suggest that individuals should have their vitamin D levels checked after Covid infection.

“The study shows that Covid-19 patients with low vitamin D levels are more likely to develop long Covid but it is not yet known whether vitamin D supplements could improve the symptoms or reduce this risk altogether,” said lead investigator professor Andrea Giustina from Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan, Italy.

Long Covid is a condition in which the effects of Covid-19 last for more than 12 weeks after contracting the initial infection.

Studies have shown that it affects 50-70 per cent of patients previously hospitalised for Covid-19, yet very little is known about the condition.

For this study, published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology

& Metabolism and supported by Abiogen Pharma Spa, researchers from the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan examined 100 patients aged 51-70 years, with and without long Covid.

They measured their vitamin D levels when first admitted to hospital for Covid-19 and six months after being discharged, and found lower vitamin D levels in patients with long Covid compared to those without.

This result was more evident in patients who experienced ‘brain fog’

symptoms, such as confusion, forgetfulness and poor concentration, at the six-month follow-up.

The researchers included patients without any bone conditions and only those who went to hospital for Covid-19, without ending up in the intensive care units (ICUs). “ T h e h i g h ly - c o n trolled nature of our study helps us better understand the role of vitamin D deficiency in long Covid, and establish that there is likely a link between vitamin D deficiency and long Covid,” said Giustina.

NEW DELHI, MAY 13 (PTI): The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has asked the secretary general of WFI to hand over the official documents including financial instruments to its ad-hoc panel, making it clear the outgoing office bearers shall have no role in the running of the federation. The WFI said it has no issues in obeying the IOA order since they were already co-operating with the authorities.

The IOA had formed an ad-hoc committee to manage the day-to-day affairs of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and also conduct due polls of the NSF. The ad-hoc committee was formed by the IOA at the behest of the Sports Ministry after several top wrestlers returned to the protest site at Jantar Mantar here last month, demanding the arrest of WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for allegedly sexually harassing women grapplers.

The IOA issued on Friday issued a letter saying that all administrative, financial and regulatory roles will now be performed by the ad-hoc committee.

“In pursuance of the above (order of the IOA dated May 12, 2023), it is hereby

clarified that the Ad Hoc Committee appointed by the IOA for the discipline of Wrestling shall carry out all the duties and responsibilities of the National Sports Federation (WFI) as enunciated in the Sports Code.

“With the Ad hoc Committee being in existence, the outgoing office bearers of the WFI shall have no role with respect to the exercise of any function of the NSF for discipline of Wrestling and shall not perform any administrative, financial, regulatory or any other role,” said the IOA letter, which has also been marked to the ministry and the WFI secretary general.

It said that outgoing office bearers should immediately hand over all necessary documents, including website login and participation details of Indian wrestlers, among others to the ad-hoc

committee.

“The outgoing office bearers of the WFI are directed to hand over all official documents, including website management, financial instruments, login details for making entries for the participation of Indian sportspersons in international events, etc., to the Ad hoc Committee, forthwith,” the IOA letter added.

WFI secretary general V N Prasood said they have no issues in sharing all the relevant documents with the IOA panel.

“It’s normal procedure.

When the oversight committee was formed, then also we had given them all the necessary filed through our staff. Now this ad hoc panel is there and we can give them whatever documents they need to manage WFI,” Prasood told PTI. “It’s not an issue. Our term is already over and the IOA and the government is managing, it’s normal procedure to ask for these documents.” The ad-hoc committee has already finalised the rules and regulations related to conduct the selection trials for picking the Indian teams for the 2023 U-17 and U-23 Asian Wrestling Championships.

Pooran, Krunal keep Lucknow Punjab Kings’ 31-run win knock out DC Super Giants in play-off hunt HYDERABAD, MAY 13 (PTI): Nicholas Pooran justified his Rs 16 crore billing, pulling off what looked like a difficult chase on a tacky track as Lucknow Super Giants were back in play-off hunt with a sevenwicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in an Indian Premier League match here on Saturday.

A target of 183 was certainly not an easy proposition on a track that got slower as the match progressed.

However, Pooran (44 not out off 13 balls), with assistance from domestic bulwark Prerak Mankad (64 not out, 45 balls) and Marcus Stoinis (40 off 25 balls), helped LSG get past the target with four balls to spare.

LSG now have 13 points from 12 games and are now in fourth spot behind Gujarat Titans (16 points), CSK (15 points) and Mumbai Indians (14 points).

However, they will have to win their next two games to have an assured berth in the last four stage.

ROME, MAY 13 (AP): Novak Djokovic was tested by 61st-ranked Tomas Martin Etcheverry in a 7-6 (5), 6-2 opening win at the Italian Open.

Aiming for a seventh title on the red clay of the Foro Italico as he prepares for the French Open, Djokovic twice had to recover from deficits during a tight first set on Friday.

Djokovic was returning after three weeks off due to a lingering issue with his surgically repaired right elbow. In his previous two tournaments on red clay, Djokovic had consecutive early exits. He lost in the round of 16 at Monte Carlo to Lorenzo Musetti. Then Dusan Lajovic beat him in the quarterfinals of the Srpska Open in Bosnia and Herzegovina, dealing him his first loss to a fellow Serbian in 11 years.

BAKU, MAY 13 (PTI): Indian shooter Rhythm Sangwan smashed a 29-year-old world record in the qualification round and later missed out on a medal as she finished eighth in the women’s 25m pistol event at the ISSF World Cup Rifle/ Pistol here.

It had been equalled twice thereafter, most recently by German Doreen Vennekamp at the Bhopal World Cup in March this year. Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar shot 586 for a 10th place finish while Akhil Sheoran was 13th with 585 and Swapnil Kusale further back in 22nd with a score of 583. Pankaj Mukheja, shooting for ranking points, only shot 581.

Carlos Vinicius opened the scoring at St Mary’s Stadium three minutes after halftime, with Aleksandar Mitrovic, who came off the bench for Vinicius, doubling their advantage to seal Southampton’s fate.

Southampton, which had needed a win to stave off relegation, can no longer reel in 17th-placed Everton and Ruben Selles’s side is bottom of the league on 24 points from 36 games. New-look India eye elusive medal at Sudirman Cup SUZHOU (CHINA), MAY 13 (PTI): Star shuttlers PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy will look to hit top gear as the Indian badminton team begins its campaign at the BWF Sudirman Cup with a blockbuster clash against a formidable Chinese Taipei here on Sunday.

India have always depended on their singles stars to deliver at the team championships and a lot will again ride on them as the country aim to clinch a first-ever medal in the World mixed team championships.

Bolstered by the epic Thomas Cup win, India will now hope to display their might in the mixed team event with men’s pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, and women’s combination of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand set to play pivotal roles in the campaign.

India have been placed along with Malaysia, Chinese Taipei and Australia in Group C with the two top teams qualifying for the knockout stage.

The Indian team, which qualified for the prestigious event after claiming bronze at the Asian Badminton Championships in Dubai last month, will have their task cut out when they face a strong Chinese Taipei team, led by Olympic silver medallist Tai Tzu Ying.

A lot will depend on Sindhu as she is expected to face former world no. 1 Tai Tzu, who has proved to be a nemesis for her, having lost 17 times in 22 meetings so far.

In fact, the last time Sindhu had defeated the world number 3 was on way to her world championships title in 2019.

World number 9 Prannoy too will face a tough battle as he is likely to be pitted against world number 5 Chou Tien Chen, considered one of the most consistent player in the men’s singles competition.

The two has played eight times so far with Chou winning five times. However, Prannoy had success against the Taipei player, having beaten him twice in last three meetings, all in 2022.

India will also look up to Satwik and Chirag to give them a valuable point, though it is easier said than done as they face Taipei’s first Olympic gold medallist in badminton, world number 12 Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin. The two pairs faced off recently at the Asia Championships but the clash ended with the Taipei pair retiring midway due to an injury.

In women’s doubles, world number 17 Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will hope to get across the world number 24 pairing of Lee Chia Hsin and Teng Chun Hsun if they cross swords.

For India, mixed doubles is likely to be the weakest link as Ashwini Ponnappa and K Sai Prateek would be looking to punch above their weight if they come across world number 23 Ye Hong Wei and Lee Chia Hsin.

On Monday, India will clash against Malaysia and it will be a fascinating battle with the likes of world number 8 Lee Zii Jia, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan, Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai and Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing standing on the way.
