Rahul Bajaj, exchairman of Bajaj Auto passes away

Late Rahul Bajaj

PUNE, FEB 12 (PTI): Eminent industrialist and former chairman of the Bajaj group, Rahul Bajaj, who put Indian industry on the world map and was known for his outspokenness, died on Saturday due to age-related illness, according to a group official. provisions. He said this was because in the north east, there were many schemes that were not part of the union budget mainly since there were several problems in implementing projects/ schemes which were not funded by any programmes, policy or by any ministry. Rijiju said PM-DevINE would be implemented by North East Council, chaired by Union Home Minister, with an initial allocation of Rs 1,500 crore. He said that for the first time, a provision has been inserted in the budget, taking note of the unique issues faced by the North Eastern states. Rijiju termed the Union Budget 2022-2023 as “self-reliant” and claimed that all sectors across the country had wholeheartedly appreciated and welcomed the budget, including the business community and stock market traders. He said people in remote areas too felt that the budget had included many things for every sector of the country. Speaking on the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflected in the budget,

for NER in the 2021-22 budget was Rs 68,020 crore and despite the difficulties of Covid-10 pandemic, the total allocation for the region increased by over Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 78,040 crore in the latest budget. Speaking on PM Gati Shakti plan, he explained how it could benefit the Northeast immensely. Under this, he said the region could greatly benefit in terms of better telecom communication, especially in far-flung areas, as the plan would focus on erecting telecom towers at strategic locations, minimising the problem of cables, hence providing better connectivity. Rijiju remarked that the NE States could not utilise budgetary allocation under Congress regimes in the past. However, he claimed that ever since the BJP and its coalition partners came to power, things were changing for the better as they were trying to enhance the capacities of the States. In order to increase the capacities of the States to utilise the budgetary allocation, the minister em-

the minister said normally when budgets were presented in Parliament, very few people connected and realised its importance or its aims. However, he claimed that ever since Modi took over as Prime Minister, budget began to be keenly followed both by the corporates and common man alike as it began to have something for everyone, including those living in remotest parts of the country. Rijiju asserted that the budget would ensure selfsufficiency, whereby the country would not rely on imports from other countries, adding that every State and every sector would benefit. According to the union minister, the total allocation

phasised that the States of region needed to take care of many things. “Once we as a State take care of our capacity, we will be able to utilise efficiently all the budgetary allocation made by the Centre. It will only increase the revenue and help us become self-sufficient,” he added. Rijiju further claimed that whenever there was any review or Union Cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister would always enquire on the success of a particular scheme or programme in NER. “According to Modi, a scheme could not be considered successful unless it was successful in the Northeast,” he added. “If you leave aside politics, nobody can match the amount of love and affection Narendra Modiji has for NER,” he remarked. AFSPA: Meanwhile, when asked if he, as the minister for Law and Justice, planned to bring a Bill in Parliament to amend the contentious Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, Rijiju clarified that the Union Home Ministry was taking necessary measures to ensure

NEW DELHI, FEB 12 (PTI): A parliamentary panel has observed that the number of women in police forces is “abysmally” low, constituting just 10.3 per cent, and suggested at least one all-women police station be established in each district in the country. The Parliamentar y Standing Committee on Ministry of Home Affairs, headed by Congress leader Anand Sharma, also said that a roadmap should be laid out to increase their representation in the police force to 33 per cent. “The committee is an-

guished to note that women are abysmally under-represented in the police force as they constitute only 10.3 percent of the police force,” it said in its report submitted to Parliament this week. The panel recommended that the MHA should advise states to establish at least one all-women police station in each district. Further, the panel said, the appointment of women in police may be done by creating additional posts rather than converting vacant posts of male constables as it will also help in improving the police-population ratio.

“Besides increasing the percentage of women in police, taking a cue from the defence forces where women are being assigned combative roles, the MHA may also advise the states and UTs to give them important challenging duties central to the police, and not just duties of inconsequence,” it said. The committee noted that the MHA has advised the states and UTs that each police station should have at least three women subinspectors and 10 women constables so that a women’s help desk is manned round the clock.

GANDHINAGAR, FEB 12 (AGENCIES): Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday said that Covid-19 vaccination for children in the age group of 5 to 15 years would be administered as soon as it receives recommendation to that effect from a group of experts. He said the group of experts has so far not made any recommendation on the vaccination of this category. “When to vaccinate and to which age group is decided on the basis of recommendation of a group

of scientists. We had implemented its recommendation for the precaution group within one week. We will surely implement its recommendation (for 5 to 15 age group) as and when we receive it,” he said in a press conference. The country-wide Covid-19 vaccination of children in 15-18 age group began last month. “Today, vaccination is not an issue. We have enough vaccines, there is no shortage of doses. We will definitely follow the recommendation of the scientific

community,” Mandaviya added. The government has so far not received any such recommendation, and a decision in this regard will be taken in the coming days on that basis. It is not a political decision. Sero survey and sero prevalence survey in July-August last year showed that 67 per cent children also developed anti-bodies, and children remained asymptomatic, he said. “Ultimately, these are biological things. Therefore, scientists study before making recommendations.

Earlier we used to follow the world (for recommendations regarding vaccination). Today, our scientists conduct their own analysis, they have their own study, and make opinions based on this,” he said. He also said that India used vaccination very effectively to fight the pandemic during its third wave. The minister said 75 per cent of children (15-18 age group) have received their COVID-19 vaccination doses and 96 per cent adults have received the first dose, while 77 per cent have got both the doses.

Modi asks U’khand not to let Cong’s agenda of appeasement to succeed DEHRADUN, FEB 12 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday appealed to the people in Uttarakhand not to let the Congress’s “agenda of appeasement” succeed when the state goes to polls on February 14. Addressing a rally in poll-bound Uttarakhand at Rudrapur on the last day of campaigning in the state, he asked voters to see these elections as an opportunity to wipe out the Congress which, he said, has already been rejected in a majority of states in the country. Terming Congress’s plans to establish a Muslim university in Devbhoomi a part of its agenda of appeasement, he asked people if they will tolerate this insult to the land of gods. He said the Congress has no understanding of the country’s cultural legacy and is disrespectful towards the armed forces. Reiterating the charge that the Congress had even called Uttarakhand’s pride and the country’s first CDS Gen Bipin Rawat a “streetside hooligan”, the prime minister called upon the people to avenge this insult in the coming polls. Modi said the Con-

Narendra Modi

gress does not even look upon this country as one “unified nation”. “If India was not a unified one nation, the brave sons of Uttarakhand hills would not have been found guarding the country’s maritime boundaries at the Kerala coast,” he said. Describing the Covid pandemic as the worst crisis in 100 years to hit mankind, he said the BJP government carried out development works undeterred and served the poor and needy wholeheartedly. “People in Uttarakhand have realised that succour to the poor during the crisis like free rations under the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana would not have reached them as smoothly as it did if any other party was in power,” Modi said. “We did not let a single poor

person go to sleep on an empty stomach during the pandemic,” he said. The BJP is leaving no stone unturned for the development of Uttarakhand, he said and cited the big road, rail, air and ropeway connectivity projects underway in the state. Accusing the Congress of spreading rumours about the anti-Covid vaccines, he said the party did it for politics because it thought if things got back on track it will not have anything to speak against the government. Earlier, addressing the rally, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said if re-elected, the BJP government will constitute a committee soon after being sworn-in to prepare

the draft of a Uniform Civil Code for Uttarakhand. The committee to draft a Uniform Civil Code for the state will consist of legal experts, retired people, intellectuals and other stakeholders, he said. The ambit of the committee will cover issues related to marriage, divorce, landed property and succession, he said. “It will be a significant step towards fulfilling the dreams of India’s Constitution makers and will realise the spirit of the Constitution. It will also be an effective step towards Article 44 of the Constitution which presents the concept of equitable law for all citizens of society regardless of their religion,” Dhami said.

KANNAUJ (UP), FEB 12 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took a swipe at opposition parties, saying after the first round of voting in Uttar Pradesh their dynasts are sleepless and unable to dream anymore. Addressing a rally in Kannauj, he said for such leaders the ‘mantra’ of democracy is “govern-

ment of the family, by the family and for the family”. Prime Minister Modi said the people of the state have realised that only the BJP government has the antidote for rioters and mafias. Kannauj, Farrukhabad and Auraiya for which Modi was addressing the rally would go to polls in the third phase on February 20.

Without BJP govt in Uttarakhand, criminals chased out of UP will take shelter here: Adityanath NEW TEHRI, FEB 12 (PTI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday appealed to people in Uttarakhand not to commit any mistake in these elections as a minor slip here may endanger national security. “If a BJP government is not in Uttarakhand, all criminals chased out of Uttar Pradesh will take shelter here and create trouble,” he said, addressing a rally in Tehri. “Uttarakhand is not just my birthplace, it is also a border state. We are working with a zero-tolerance policy towards crime, and Uttar Pradesh has become safe as a result of that. All

EC allows yatras, 4 more hours of campaigning NEW DELHI, FEB 12 (PTI): The Election Commission on Saturday further relaxed COVID-19-induced restrictions on the assembly poll campaign in five states, allowing padayatras with a limited number of people and increasing the number of hours campaigning can take place in a day. According to the poll panel, election campaign can now be conducted between 6 am and 10 pm instead of earlier 8 am to 8 pm. This will give candidates and parties four more hours to campaign in a day. Citing the rise in COVID-19 cases, the poll panel had imposed a ban on physical rallies, roadshows and padayatras when it announced the assembly poll schedule for Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab and Manipur on January 8. The commission has been reviewing the pandemic situation periodically and allowing some relaxations. According to an EC statement, political parties and candidates can campaign outdoor with a maximum of 50 per cent of the capacity of the designated open spaces or the limit prescribed by state disaster management authorities, whichever is less. So far the limit for such outdoor events such as meetings and rallies was 30 per cent of the open space or ground capacity. On padayatra, the EC said such a gathering cannot consist of more people than the number permitted by state disaster management authorities.

surveys indicate that we are all set to come back in Uttar Pradesh,” Adityanath added. “However, a minor mistake on your part in the coming polls may put you in trouble. Don’t let criminals being chased out of Uttar Pradesh take refuge in your state,” he said. Accusing the Congress

of trying to make dents in an “impenetrable fortress of national security” like Uttarakhand, he said the party must be stopped. Uttarakhand is moving in the right direction, and it should continue to tread that path, Adityanath said. Targeting the Congress for talking about establishing a Muslim university in Uttarakhand, he said the party has no leadership. “Swami Vivekananda taught us to say with pride that we are Hindus. Now Rahul Gandhi, whose forebears called themselves accidental Hindus, is trying to redefine Hinduism,” Adityanath claimed.

Sena to contest all polls in Goa: Aaditya Thackeray PANAJI, FEB 12 (PTI): Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray on Saturday said his party could not focus on Goa earlier due to its friendship with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but after the latter “back-stabbed”, the Sena has now decided to contest all future polls in the coastal state - right from panchayat level to general elections. He said Goa needs the Sena, because despite being in power at the Centre and in the state, the BJP has failed to bring any sustainable development. The Shiv Sena fell out with BJP after the 2019 Maharashtra polls and tied up with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress to form Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the neighbouring state. The Sena is contesting the February 14 Goa Assembly elections in alliance with the NCP. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena has fielded 10 candidates in Goa this time. The party has withdrawn its candidate Shailendra Velingkar from the Panaji seat after Utpal Parrikar, son of late Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, decided to contest as an independent candidate after being denied ticket by the BJP from the constituency.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami promises a uniform civil code of its own DEHRADUN, FEB 12 (AGENCIES): On the last day of election campaigning in Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the BJP government, if re-elected, would constitute a committee to draft a uniform civil code (UCC), given that the “security” of the cultural and religious heritage as well as borders of the state was important for the whole country, reports The New Indian Express. “The security of cultural and religious heritage of Uttarakhand, its environment and borders is important not just for the state, but for the entire country. With that, soon after our oath-taking ceremony, the upcoming BJP government will form a committee of those with knowledge of the legal system, retired employees, prominent people from so-

ciety and other stakeholders. This committee will prepare a draft of the uniform civil code for the people of Uttarakhand. This UCC will be for equal laws on subjects like marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance for people of all religions,” Dhami told a news agency on Saturday. Uttarakhand will vote on February 14 to elect its next Assembly. “The UCC will be an important step towards fulfilling the dream of our the Constitution’s creators, and

will solidify the spirit of the Constitution. This will also be an effective step towards Article 44 of the Constitution, which talks about securing a UCC for every citizen of the country. The apex court too has from time to time not only laid emphasis on its implementation, but has expressed dissatisfaction over steps not being taken in this direction,” the BJP chief minister added. “Along with this, the immense spiritual and cultural recognition of devbhoomi will also be increased while keeping the environment secured. The UCC of Uttarakhand will also act as an example for other states,” he said. Reacting to the announcement, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that Dhami should “understand that ‘uniform’ doesn’t mean common”.

Shows your party is losing: Sibal slams Dhami

NEW DELHI, FEB 12 (PTI): Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Saturday attacked Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami over his remarks that the BJP will constitute a committee to prepare a draft Uniform Civil Code if re-elected, saying this shows the BJP is losing the polls in the hill state and he needs some legal advice. Sibal asked Dhami not to “embarrass” his party and himself by making such announcements.

In a video statement, Dhami said the BJP, if re-elected to power in Uttarakhand, will constitute a committee to prepare a draft Uniform Civil Code soon after its new government is sworn in. The panel will comprise legal experts, retired people, intellectuals and other stakeholders, the chief minister announced on the last day of campaigning for the 70 assembly seats in the state going to polls on February 14.

Bengal: Polling for 4 municipal corporations’ elections peaceful KOLKATA, FEB 12 (PTI): Elections to municipal corporations of Bidhannagar, Asansol, Siliguri and Chandernagore in West Bengal were on Saturday peaceful, barring a few incidents of skirmishes, with around 72 per cent of electors exercising their franchise till 5 PM, an SEC official said. The voting began at 7 AM. “Polling has been peaceful so far. We have taken a note of some disturbances from these municipal corporation areas where outsiders were found standing in voters’ queue,” the senior official of the West Bengal State Election Commission said. A voter turnout of 72.02 per cent was registered

in Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation till 5 PM, while the polling percentage in Siliguri, Asansol and Chandernagore were 71.87,

71.67 and 71.49 respectively, he said. As per the SEC, the final percentage figure will be available on Sunday as

people still stood in queues outside polling booths at 5 PM, the scheduled time for the closure of voting. “BJP candidates Subhasish Das and Biswajit Mondal in Siliguri have been detained by the police for their alleged involvement in creating problems outside polling booths,” the SEC official said. The police made elaborate security arrangements in all the four municipal areas situated in different parts of the state for the peaceful conduct of the polls, he said. He also stated that outsiders were detected in voters’ lines in two wards of Bidhannagar and one in Siliguri. Asked about a firing incident in Asansol civic

body area, the official said the commission is looking into the complaint. BJP leader Jitendra Tiwari accused miscreants affiliated to the TMC of opening fire in ward-27 of Asansol, following which a huge police contingent was deployed there, the official said. The ruling party termed the allegation as baseless. Tiwari, a former TMC legislator, was mayor of Asansol before he switched over to the saffron camp ahead of the assembly polls last year. He also claimed that his election agent was stopped from entering a booth by the TMC workers, though the Mamata Banerjee party denied the allegation.

Mamata dissolves all existing AAP’s Mann promises to eradicate mafia rule in Punjab posts in Trinamool Congress KO L K ATA , F E B 1 2 (IANS): In a significant development, Trinamool Congress Chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday dissolved all the existing posts in the party and formed a 20-member national working committee after holding a meeting with some senior party leaders at her Kalighat residence. The name of the new office-bearers will later be announced by Banerjee herself. The significant announcement came at a time when there were rumours that the party’s All-India General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, is likely to step down from all organisational responsibilities allegedly because of differences with some senior party leaders. “Mamata Baner jee was re-elected as the Chairperson of the party recently where she announced a small committee to look after party affairs. Today (Saturday), a meeting of that committee was held where she announced our new national working committee,” said senior Trinamool leader Partha Chatterjee. He added that Banerjee will later appoint the new office-bearers and accordingly it would be sent to the Election Commission of India. Among the leaders who found a place in the national working committee are Amit Mitra, Partha

Chatterjee, Subrata Bakshi, Sudip Bandopadhyay, Abhishek Banerjee, Anubrata Mondal, Aroop Biswas, Firhad Hakim, Yashwant Sinha, Asima Patra, Chandrima Bhattacharjee, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Moloy Ghatak, Jyotipriya Mallick, Goutam Deb, Buluchik Baraik and Rajesh Tripathi. Interestingly, most of the members of the national working committee belong to Mamata camp, indicative enough that the Chief Minister is keen to establish her control over the party. Only two leaders from other states -- Yashwant Sinha and Rajesh Tripathi -- are part of the national working committee of Trinamool. “Till our Chairperson does not announce the new list of office-bearers, all the other posts of the last committee cease to exist,” a senior Trinamool leader pointed out. “The Chief Minister wants to control the party herself. A lot of versions were put forward by different leaders which were creating confusion among the people and the com-

mon workers of the party. In this situation, strong control over the party was essential,” a senior party leader said. When asked whether this is an effort to clip Abhishek Banerjee’s wings, the leader said, “The Chief Minister wants to establish direct control because people only give votes in her name.” The differences came to the fore during the publication of the list of candidates for the municipal polls by the party, when two lists surfaced - one signed by party Secretary General Partha Chatterjee and state Secretary Subrata Bakshi, and another prepared by I-PAC that had the support and patronage of Abhishek Banerjee. Though Mamata Banerjee said that the list prepared by Chatterjee and Bakshi was the official list, in many municipalities, Abhishek Banerjee overruled the Chief Minister’s decision and gave nominations to the candidates approved by Prashant Kishor and I-PAC. The situation went to an extent when both Chatterjee and Bakshi told the Chief Minister that it would be better for them to get distanced from active politics than taking instructions from Camac Street (the office of Abhishek Banerjee). Mamata Banerjee was also unhappy with the situation and gave indications to terminate ties with I-PAC.

DHURI (PUNJAB), FEB 12 (IANS): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann on Saturday campaigned in the villages of his constituency Dhuri, promising to eradicate mafia rule in the state and people’s money would be refunded from chit fund companies. Mann appealed to the people to bring a new light in Punjab by electing the AAP government on March 10. “Young people are dying due to drugs and unemployment, we have to save these youngsters and Punjab. Ukraine flashpoint

W

ith the United States warning of a likely possibility of war between Russia and Ukraine and sounding an alert to its NATO allies to be prepared for any such eventuality; the world has every reason to be concerned. The US says Russia has all the forces in place to launch military action, but Russia has repeatedly said it has no such plans. What happens next could jeopardise Europe’s entire security structure. The Americans and their close NATO allies like the UK, Germany and Poland have cautioned Russia against any move to invade Ukraine. While the world media would want people to believe that Russia is up to no good in Ukraine, there is more to it than meets the eye. Russia and Ukraine were one and even today, their cultures are very similar. Russia continues to hold fast to the concept that Ukraine should not have seceded. When Ukrainians deposed their proRussian president in early 2014, Russia annexed Ukraine’s southern Crimean peninsula and backed separatists who captured large swathes of eastern Ukraine. The rebels have fought the Ukrainian military ever since in a conflict that has claimed more than 14,000 lives. The Washington Post has been cautiously critical of the alarm bells being rung by US president Joe Biden and his administration. The newspaper said that since U.S. officials first bannered the gathering strength of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces at the border more than three months ago, they’ve repeated the threat with escalating alarm. Last week, new U.S. assessments emerged that Russian combat firepower had reached 70 percent of the gale force needed for a full-scale Category 5 assault. The Russian storm, the United States concluded, could overwhelm Kyiv, Ukraine, within two days, leaving as many as 50,000 civilians dead or wounded. The Biden administration has also been increasingly clear about what it doesn’t know: Whether Putin has made the critical decision to actually invade. That finer point came into focus after an exasperated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky decried Washington’s breathless warnings for causing “panic.” Last week, the White House backtracked on using the word “imminent” to describe the prospect of a Russian attack. Russia’s renewed bullying of Ukraine can be traced back to the Crimea annexation and Western inaction. President Vladimir Putin has known for years that Russian aggression would be met with a lot of discussion and a great deal of public handwringing. These stern warnings and sanctions would not actually hamper his movements, however. Examining Russia’s newly aggressive actions this week through the lens of history provides one explanation as to exactly why the Kremlin now believes it can put the international community on mute and go about its business unmolested. We can start with the 2014 annexation of Crimea. Former president Barack Obama’s administration reacted to the Russian invasion with impassioned words and a stream of economic sanctions but no counter that counted - at least in Russia’s eyes — which did much to bolster Putin’s confidence. It is clear that the Russia-Ukraine crisis could reach a flashpoint unless the parties involved show restrain. Putin should stop playing with fire and leave the Ukrainians alone. At such a time, the US and its allies should also restraint from crying wolf but remain ever vigilant against Russia’s intention.

DailyDevotion Are You Listening to God?

They said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.” —Exodus 20:19 We don’t consciously and deliberately disobey God— we simply don’t listen to Him. God has given His commands to us, but we pay no attention to them— not because of willful disobedience, but because we do not truly love and respect Him. “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15). Once we realize we have constantly been showing disrespect to God, we will be filled with shame and humiliation for ignoring Him. “You speak with us,…but let not God speak with us….” We show how little love we have for God by preferring to listen to His servants rather than to Him. We like to listen to personal testimonies, but we don’t want God Himself to speak to us. Why are we so terrified for God to speak to us? It is because we know that when God speaks we must either do what He asks or tell Him we will not obey. But if it is simply one of God’s servants speaking to us, we feel obedience is optional, not imperative. We respond by saying, “Well, that’s only your own idea, even though I don’t deny that what you said is probably God’s truth.” Am I constantly humiliating God by ignoring Him, while He lovingly continues to treat me as His child? Once I finally do hear Him, the humiliation I have heaped on Him returns to me. My response then becomes, “Lord, why was I so insensitive and obstinate?” This is always the result once we hear God. But our real delight in finally hearing Him is tempered with the shame we feel for having taken so long to do so.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2022

I

What will be India’s GDP in 2022-’23?

ndians have enjoyed an ever-expanding array of choices for consumer goods over the past couple of decades. In this season of cheer and goodwill, they now have the pleasure of even selecting a version of India’s growth perspectives, depending on the risks playing out. Three versions are on offer. Over the past 10 days, the Indian public has been furnished with separate estimates of India’s expected gross domestic product for next year, 2022-’23. First, on January 31, the finance ministry presented the government’s economic survey for the current year, 2021-’22, which also provided a line of sight to next year’s GDP. The estimate from the office of the chief economic adviser: 8%-8.5% real growth, that is growth adjusted for inflation, over 2021-’22. Next day, February 1, came the government’s Budget for next year, an annual exercise in estimating how much it will earn through different revenue streams (through taxes or selling off governmentowned companies, like Air India) and how much it will spend on salaries or roads and bridges. The government’s Budget pencils in the year’s tax collection projections on the basis of a rough estimate of how the economy will grow. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in an unusual display of conservatism, expects India’s nominal GDP to grow by 11.1% during 2022-’23. Then on February 10, the Reserve Bank of India presented its last bi-monthly monetary policy for 2021’22. The central bank has estimated that India’s real GDP will grow by 7.8%

W

during 2022-’23, with consumer inflation averaging 4.5%, yielding a nominal GDP growth of 12.3%. A quick point here. If we juxtapose the survey’s and Budget’s GDP estimates, since both the exercises were conducted in the finance ministry, it seems the expected growth rate is 3.1%-2.6% for the forthcoming financial year (Sitharaman’s 11.1% minus the survey’s 8%-8.5%). But, since RBI has already provided a feel for next year’s consumer inflation, the Budget’s projection of real GDP works out to 6.6%. So, there you have it, three different versions of India’s future GDP, all presented within a span of 11 days: 8%-8.5%, 6.6% and 7.8%. Take your pick, depending on your personal fancy. But, if you look closely, these numbers are also telling us something. Circumspection in air For one, if we leave aside the Economic Survey forecast, both Sitharaman and RBI governor Shaktikanta Das seem to be erring on the side of caution. Both have dialled down their usual penchant for bold and ambitious growth targets. Last year, around this time, RBI’s Das was slightly more bullish and had forecast a growth rate of 10.5%. Using his inflation estimates, Sitharaman’s forecast was 9.9%. The first advance estimate shows that the year might end with a 9.2% growth. So, why have both Sitharaman and Das backpedalled on growth? Two things stand out. The first is circumspection. All it takes is a virus to upend the well-laid plans and aspirations of economic planners. The

devastating second wave of April 2021-May 2021, made deadlier by sub-optimal vaccination and a severe deficit in healthcare infrastructure, upset all plans and projections by a mile. The Delta variant resulted in a large number of deaths and pushed back nascent recovery by a few weeks. And then, just when things seemed to be getting back on an even keel, another variant called Omicron threw sand in the wheels of recovery. Who knows whether another variant will turn spoilsport next year. There is no telling with this shapeshifting virus. It irrupts and disrupts, and could once again end a recovery party even before it begins. The lessons from last year’s stumbles seem to have informed the conservative growth approximations. This is why the RBI’s monetary policy committee also probably feels it is too early to start normalising policy. The RBI’s monetary policy has continued with its accommodative stance and eschewed any rate hikes, which is at odds with bond market expectations. This brings us to the second factor. Even if we are willing to forget the virus for a moment, the RBI’s call has also been informed by the burden of risks weighing down on the horizon. The central bank’s policy statement of February 10 spelt out some of its worries: “The global macroeconomic environment is, however, characterised by a deceleration in global demand in 2022, with increasing headwinds from financial market volatility induced by monetary policy normalisation in the systemic advanced economies

Budget buzz on the street

and inflationary pressures from persisting supply chain disruptions. Accordingly, the Monetary Policy Committee judges that the ongoing domestic recovery is still incomplete and needs continued policy support.” Das actually provides a more specific matrix by stretching the envelope of risks: “In a global environment rendered highly volatile and uncertain by diverging monetary policy stances, geo-political tensions, elevated crude oil prices and persistent supply bottlenecks, emerging economies are vulnerable to destabilising global spillovers on an ongoing basis. Thus, policymakers face daunting challenges even as recovery from the pandemic remains incomplete.” Unpeeling his statement, four risks stand out. Four risks The first is central banks moving in different orbits, what Das calls “diverging monetary policy stances”. While some central banks are continuing with their accommodative policies, some other central banks have been tightening by reducing liquidity and increasing interest rates. This is a step-change in the global financial system. Most central banks across the globe, following the 2008 financial crash, had started coordinating their actions and policy frameworks, barring the odd or temporary deviation (such as the US Federal Reserve’s 2013 taper tantrum). The pandemic has rent asunder that global compact – this is a major risk because the global economy is still inter-connected and financial ripples that begin in one corner of the world can turn into tsunamis in

another, including in India. The second risk stems from the Russia-Ukraine standoff. Russia’s unrelenting stand of not allowing North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces in its bordering countries or for them to deploy nuclear warheads has clashed with the security anxieties of the US and its European allies. Consequently, in a situation poised at cliff ’s edge, both Russia and Ukraine have been staring down the barrel of a gun. China is the other joker in the pack. Both Russia and China sense a vacuum developing in the global power sweepstakes and both have been flexing their muscles to test the US’ resolve to stick to its principles. India’s ability to balance its geopolitical partners, or its security concerns, with its trade or business imperatives will require delicate footwork. These face-offs have led to collateral damage, and a third risk: fossil fuel prices have been shooting up and are currently hovering close to $90 a barrel, give or take. As the impasse continues unabated, blowing hot one day and cold the other, crude oil prices seem on way to keep their date with $100 per barrel. As a net importer of crude oil, petro-products accounting for 60%-70% of the import bill, fuel price volatility has serious inflationary implications for India. And so do broken supply chains, which is the fourth risk. The impact for India works on two fronts. Shortage of semiconductor chips is holding back the delivery of a wide variety of products, including passenger cars, thereby driving up prices. Second, the global shortage of containers hampers export efforts, which in-

hibits growth. The high cost of containers, conversely, pushes up import costs, thereby further fuelling the inflationary impulses. The bruising experience of the Delta variant, with even the relatively harmless Omicron displaying its disruptive sinews, might have given both the government and the RBI reason to pause and reflect. India’s output levels are barely above the prepandemic level, leave alone the historic levels of the past two decades. Private consumption has been lagging and, given the rising unemployment numbers, it could be a while before it stabilises at earlier levels. No wonder then that Nirmala Sitharaman has pushed down on the fiscal pedal, but incorporated a structural change in the nature of spending: capital expenditure (like roads and bridges) instead of redistributive policies which supplant lost income and help restore basic consumption. Capital expenditure is expected to not only generate demand in downstream industries (such as cement and steel) but also get the private sector to start spending on upgrading their factories or expanding their capacities. Even Das and his merry band at the monetary policy committee do not wish to destabilise this slow walk back towards recovery by raising interest rates or squeezing liquidity. There is only one catch here: this chosen path to recovery is a long and winding road. There is always a chance that some other, unexpected risk will appear mid-way. the merits and demerits of selling their votes. After all the role or duty to give such awareness belongs to which organization? In a country like China which follows single party system, the party educates the people on its political beliefs and system. Whereas India follows multi party system, so no political party will dare to give real political education to the mass another reason why elections across India are still mostly fought on the line of caste, religion and language. So now discussing on Nagaland, one does not see any political party starting a campaign on clean election. But what if particular party dares to undertake such project and succeed in creating a new breed of voters, I believe real change will come through such effort. While discussing on clean election I once held the view that if clan body, village /town council tribe apex body pass resolution on clean election warning with severe penalty to those violators, the matter will end there but I was so wrong. Such organizations can come together and cooperate on any matter except on clean election campaign. Younger generation often discuss on new breed of politicians coming into power but what the younger population never discuss enough is what type the new breed should be. As time passed by old generation politicians will be replaced by new generation politicians, but what if young politician copy and follow the same method of their predecessors. Such actions will put us back to square one, where corruption in government will exist for infinity. Again people will say you can never win election in Nagaland without spending crore of rupees. Well, contemporary history says, once upon a time in Nagaland, candidates won election without spending such huge amount of money, younger generation can make that reality again by building a new breed of voters at the same time utilizing our state literacy rates to its real use, building a new breed of voters on the foundation of political ideology alone not on clan, village or tribe entity. Only through this way, government run by a transparent new breed of politicians could bring real development in the state. If such thing did never happen in the near future, inequality in resources distribution, absence of transparency in the government will heap more misery on the shoulder of the common people. institutions which have prescribed a student dress code or uniform. It is scheduled to resume hearing on February 14. The fresh PIL , which has been filed by Nikhil Upadhyay through lawyers Ashwini Upadhyay and Ashwani Dubey in the apex court, also sought a direction to the Centre to set up a judicial commission or an expert panel to suggest steps for inculcating values of “social and economic justice, socialism secularism and democracy and to promote fraternity dignity unity and national integration among the students”.

“Alternatively, being custodian of the Constitution and protector of fundamental rights, direct the Law Commission of India to prepare a report suggesting steps to secure social equality and to promote fraternity dignity unity and national integration within three months,” it said. Besides the Centre, states and the union territories, the PIL has made the Law Commission a party and sought a direction to respondent authorities “to strictly implement a Common Dress Code for staff and students in all the registered and recognized educational institutions in

order to secure equality of status and social equality and to promote fraternity dignity unity national integration”. It referred to certain protests held in the national capital on February 10 against the ‘hijab’ curbs in Karnataka. “Educational institutions are secular public places and are meant to impart knowledge and wisdom employment, good health and contribute to nation building, not to follow essential and non-essential religious practices,” the PIL said. “It is very essential to introduce a Common Dress Code in all schoolscolleges to preserve the secular character of educational institutions, otherwise tomorrow Naga Sadhus may take admission in colleges and attend the class without clothes citing essential religious practice,” it said. The common dress code is not only necessary to maintain uniformity but also to instil a sense of ca-

maraderie among students from different caste, creed, faith, religion, culture and place, the plea said. It referred to the dress code in countries like the US, the UK, France, Singapore and China and said, “according to a survey, around 2,50,000 guns were brought in schools and colleges in 2018. So, having a Common Dress Code that requires a student’s beltline exposed reduces the fear of a concealed weapon.” The controversy started towards the end of December when a few women students in hijabs were denied entry into a government pre-university college in Udupi. As a counter, some Hindu students turned up wearing saffron scarves. The row spread to other educational institutions in different parts of the state, and the protests took a violent turn at some places earlier this week, prompting the government on Tuesday to declare a three-day holiday for the institutions.

India to showcase Tejas light combat CBI searches 12 premises linked to CAs of Deshmukh aircraft at Singapore airshow NEW DELHI, FEB 12 (PTI): India will showcase its indigenously developed Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA) at the four-day Singapore Air Show next week. The defence ministry said a 44-member contingent of the Indian Air Force (IAF) reached Singapore on Saturday to participate in the air show to be held from February 15 to 18. Manufactured by state-run aerospace behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, the Tejas aircraft is a potent platform for air combat and offensive air support missions while reconnaissance and anti-ship operations are its secondary roles. Singapore Air Show is a biennial event that provides a platform for the global aviation industry to

showcase its products. The ministry said the IAF will be pitching the indigenous Tejas MK-I aircraft alongside participants from across the world. “The Tejas aircraft will be enthralling the audience with its display of lowlevel aerobatics displaying its superior handling characteristics and manoeuvrability,” it said in a statement. “The participation of Indian Air Force in the air

show provides India with the opportunity to showcase the Tejas aircraft and to interact with counterparts from Royal Singapore Air Force and other participating contingents,” it said. In the past, the IAF participated in similar air shows like LIMA-2019 in Malaysia and Dubai air show last year to exhibit indigenous aircraft and formation aerobatic teams.

NAGPUR, FEB 12 (PTI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is conducting searches on Saturday at 12 locations in Nagpur linked to the chartered accountants (CAs) of former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh in connection with a money laundering case registered against him, officials said. The CBI teams from Delhi and Mumbai arrived in Nagpur on Friday night and began the searches on Saturday morning, they said. “These 12 locations are either residences or office premises of the chartered accountants of Deshmukh,” an official said. Deshmukh, who hails from Nagpur, had stepped down as state home minister in April last year following allegations of corruption levelled against him by former Police Commis-

sioner of Mumbai Param Bir Singh. Deshmukh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on November 1 last year and is currently in judicial custody. The agency had launched a probe against Deshmukh after the CBI filed an FIR against the NCP leader on April 21, 2021, for alleged corruption. The ED’s case is that while serving as state home minister, Deshmukh, through then-assistant police inspector Sachin Waze (who was dismissed from service after arrest in the ‘Antilia’ bomb scare case last year), collected Rs 4.70 crore from various bars and restaurants in Mumbai. The money was then laundered and routed to the Nagpur-based Shri Sai Shikshan Sansthan, an educational trust controlled by the Deshmukh family, the ED has claimed.

NEW DELHI, FEB 12 (IANS): Twitter has received request by Indian law enforcement agencies to shut down newly formed Tehreek-e-Taliban India (TTI). “ T h e Te h r e e k - e Taliban India (#TTI) announced its official activities today, Thursday, following a meeting of its leaders in India”, It said in a tweet. “ T h e I n d i a n g ov ernment has no choice. Without war or peace with Tehreek-e-Taliban India”, it said in another tweet. “Tehreek-e-Taliban India. Taliban is a common name. And it has nothing to do with the Taliban in Afghanistan or Pakistan. The Indian Taliban is made up of Muslim scholars. And created for peace in India and Kashmir. And so far thousands of Indian and Kashmiri Muslims have joined it”, it clarified on the Taliban name and also because it sounds a lookalike of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) which is at war against the Pakistan government. TTI also put out a notification saying that Twitter has received a request from Indian law enforcement that the content violates the laws of India. The announcement to establish the TTI was carried out via a Tweet from an undisclosed location after a meeting.

(PTI): India on Saturday rejected criticism by some countries over the simmering dress code row in certain educational institutions in Karnataka and said that “motivated comments” on the country’s internal issues are not welcomed. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that those who know India well would have a proper appreciation of the realities. “A matter regarding dress code in some educational institutions in the State of Karnataka is under judicial examination by the High Court of Karnataka,” he said. “Our constitutional framework and mechanisms, as well as our democratic ethos and polity, are the context in which issues are considered and resolved. Those who know India well would have a proper appreciation of these realities. Motivated comments on our internal issues are not welcome,” he said. Bagchi’s response came when asked by the media about comments by some countries on dress code in some educational institutions in Karnataka. US Ambassador-atlarge for International Religious Freedom (IRF) Rashad Hussain on Friday said that hijab bans in schools “violate religious”

“Religious freedom includes the ability to choose one’s religious attire. The Indian state of Karnataka should not determine permissibility of religious clothing. Hijab bans in schools violate religious freedom and stigmatize and marginalize women and girls,” he tweeted. Pakistan on Wednesday summoned India’s Charge d’Affaires in Islamabad and conveyed its concern on the restrictions on Muslim girl students from wearing hijab or wearing headscarves in Karnataka. The Pakistan Foreign Office said that the Indian diplomat was conveyed its deep concern over what it alleged as religious intolerance and discrimination against Muslims in India. The Hijab row started a few weeks back after a few girl students in hijabs were denied entry into a government pre-university college in Udupi. Following the incident, protests erupted against the hijab ban in various parts of the state. The Karnataka High Court has restrained all students from wearing any sort of religious dress within the classroom in the state, regardless of their religion or faith, until further orders on pleas challenging the ban in educational institutions with a dress code.

In most of the cases, the parents or other family members of those involved did not get a wink of what was going on. “Names of known courier services were being misused to send narcotics in neatly packed boxes that contained items like toys, stationery items or goods of daily use,” the officer said. The federal anti-narcotics agency said the accused were adept at using the ‘darknet’ and its applications for narcotics transactions. Also, apps like Wickr, Tor browser, Telegram, Instagram were being used by them. “Some phones were customised to allow a user to hide the internet protocol (IP) address,” Singh said, adding payments were being made via Paytm wallet, cryptocurrency, UPI transfer and some other modes.

Lockdown parties: UK prime minister contacted by police

Paris police thwart advance of virus protesters

LONDON, FEB 12 (AP): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has received a questionnaire from London’s Metropolitan Police as part of the investigation into parties in Downing Street during COVID lockdowns, his office said Saturday. If he is found to have broken his government’s own COVID rules, the embattled prime minister could be fined and will face even more pressure to stand down from fellow lawmakers already furious at his proximity to the “partygate” affair. A growing number of lawmakers from his own party are calling for his ouster, and even former leaders have lined up to warn him against attempting to cling to power if he is found to have broken rules. Fo r m e r C o n s e r va tive leader Iain Duncan Smith said it would be “very tough” to hang on if the police find that Johnson broke the law, while former Prime Minister John Major accused Johnson and his government of treating the truth as optional and “shredding” the UK’s global reputation. The prime minister’s office confirmed in a statement that he had been contacted by police. It comes

with tensions boiling in Ukraine, and UK nationals warned to evacuate the country over the possibility of a Russian invasion. Johnson has denied any wrongdoing, but he is alleged to have been at up to six of the 12 events in his 10 Downing St office and other government buildings that are being investigated by the police. He has acknowledged attending a “bring your own booze” party in the No 10 garden in May 2020 during the first lockdown, but insisted he believed it would be a work event. He also allegedly attended a gathering organised by his wife, Carrie, in the official Downing Street residence, during which ABBA songs were reportedly heard. The police force has written to about 50 people, including the prime minister and his wife, asking for them to account for their activities on the dates under investigation. The force said questionnaires must be responded to within seven days. They have the same status as information given in an interview under police caution.

Myanmar’s military ruler appeals to restive minorities

Norway lifts almost all COVID curbs

BANGKOK, FEB 12 (AP): The head of Myanmar’s military government appealed Saturday for national unity among the country’s restive ethnic minorities as he presided over a parade marking the 75th anniversary of a historic agreement that has failed to ensure harmony. Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, head of the military council that seized power last year from Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government, praised the minorities for signing the 1947 Panglong Agreement, which was supposed to unify ethnic groups following decades of British colonial rule. But the army’s seizure of power last year has added to the decades of nearly constant conflict after an insurgency erupted in opposition to military rule. Protesters initially staged peaceful demonstrations but armed resistance grew after they were put down with lethal force. About 1,500 civilians have been killed but the govern-

Min Aung Hlaing in a prepared statement released Saturday acknowledged that the conflicts with the minorities have yet to be resolved, saying that had slowed the country’s development. He later oversaw the parade in the capital Naypyitaw with members of the armed forces and government ministries marching past. It also included dozens

HELSINKI, FEB 12 (AP): Norway says it is lifting almost all remaining COVID restrictions as it doesn’t see a major health threat to citizens any more, even though the omicron variant is still spreading in the Nordic nation. “This is the day we have been waiting for,” said Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere during a news conference in Oslo on Saturday. “We are removing almost all coronavirus measures.” He justified the move by saying that Norwegians are well protected by vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic and the proportion of citizens who end in up in hospital has remained low despite the spread of the omicron variant. As of Saturday, Norwegians are no longer required to wear masks in crowded places and the one-metre (3-foot) distancing rule is abolished. In addition, self-isolation requirements are lifted and replaced with a recommendation that infected adults stay at home for four days.

Opponents of military rule urged a virtual boycott of the anniversary ceremony, which they described as wasteful, especially with the country still facing a significant challenge from the coronavirus pandemic. They told people not to turn on their televisions while the parade was being broadcast and not to circulate photos of the ceremony on social media, claiming it would only serve to boost Min Aung Hlaing’s image.

PARIS, FEB 12 (AP): Paris police intercepted at least 500 vehicles attempting to enter the French capital Saturday, in defiance of a police order, to take part in protests against virus restrictions inspired by Canada’s horn-honking “Freedom Convoy”. The police said on Twitter that several convoys were stopped from entering at key city arteries and over 200 motorists were handed tickets. Elsewhere, at least two protesters were detained amid a seizure of knives, hammers and other objects in one central Parisian square. Police have created checkpoints, deployed armoured personnel carriers and set up water cannons to brace the city for the protests. So far, the police blockade action has seemed effective. Railing against the vaccination pass that France requires to enter restaurants and many other venues, protesters have tried to weave toward Paris from north, south, east and west, waving and honking at onlookers from their car windows. Some convoys sought to avoid police detection Friday by travelling local roads instead of the major highways leading into the capital. Waving French flags and shouting “freedom,” the protesters organised online, galvanised in part by truckers who have blockaded Canada’s capital and blocked border crossings.

round 90 minutes of mild- to moderateintensity exercise directly after the flu or the Covid-19 vaccine may provide an extra immune boost, suggests a new study. The study showed that participants who cycled on a stationary bike or took a brisk walk for an hour-anda-half after getting a jab produced more antibodies in the following four weeks compared to participants who sat or continued with their daily routine postimmunization. The researchers, including lead author Marian Kohut from Iowa State University, found similar results when they ran an experiment with mice and treadmills. “Our preliminary results are the first to demonstrate a specific amount of time can enhance the body’s antibody response to the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine and two vaccines for influenza,” said Kohut. The researchers said the study’s findings could directly benefit people with a range of fitness levels. Nearly half of the participants in the study, published in the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity, had a BMI in the overweight or obese category. The studies also showed that when given a cognitive task, older adults rely more heavily on previous knowledge than younger adults do. While the researchers focus primarily on the difficulties that these cluttered memories may pose, they also highlight a few situations in which these crowded memoryscapes may be useful. smallpox and rinderpest (a virus that mainly infected cattle and buffalo) as the only diseases to have been purposefully eradicated in human history. This progress is “remarkable”, says Julie Swann, a disease modeller at North Carolina State University in Raleigh — especially given that there is no recognized treatment or vaccine for the parasite. Instead, eradication campaigns have focused on preventing transmission, she says. People and some animals, including cats, dogs and baboons, become infected with Guinea worm by drinking water that is contaminated with its larvae. After spending a year growing inside the host, the parasite — which can be up to one metre long — pushes through the skin of its host and waits to come into contact with water to release its larvae. The worm’s escape

is painful and can last for up to six weeks, sometimes preventing people from working or even walking. But the recognizable nature of Guinea worm disease also makes the parasite easy to detect. In Chad, where 7 of the 14 cases were reported last year, field agents create a network to track contaminated water sources, says Philippe Tchindebet Ouakou, the coordinator of the nation’s Guinea Worm Eradication Program, who is based in N’Djamena. They then prevent people from drinking the contaminated water and use pesticides to disinfect it. Similar approaches have been used in countries such as South Sudan, Mali and Ethiopia, where the remaining 7 detected cases in 2021 occurred. These methods are what have kept case numbers low, says Ouakou, and could be used to tackle other endemic diseases.

In a review publishing in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences today (February 11, 2022), researchers propose an explanation for why this might be happening: the brains of older adults allocate more space to accumulated knowledge and have more material to navigate when attempting to access memories. hile the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage around the world, another disease could be on its way out. Only 14 cases of infection with Guinea worm — a parasite that causes painful skin lesions — were reported in humans in 2021. This is the lowest tally ever for an infection that, as recently as the 1980s, was found in more than 20 countries and infected 3.5 million people a year (see ‘On the way out’) — however, a remaining reservoir for the parasite in animals means eradication could be a while off, if indeed it is possible, say some scientists. “It’s pretty amazing,” says Adam Weiss, director of the Guinea Worm Eradication Program of the Carter Center, which is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The centre announced the numbers in late January. “Fourteen people on a planet of almost eight billion. It’s mind-bending to think about.” The reduction — nearly a 50% drop compared with the 27 cases reported in 2020 — is the result of a near 40-year effort by international organizations and national governments to rid the world of Guinea worm, says Weiss. Man Utd held by Southampton 1-1

MANCHESTER, FEB 12 (AGENCIES): Manchester United’s frustrating season continued when they were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday. United started brightly, creating several early openings before Jadon Sancho got on the end of Marcus Rashford’s low cross to fire the hosts in front in the 21st minute -- the England forward’s first goal at Old Trafford. However, United, just as they did against Burnley in midweek, dropped off after scoring and again conceded early in the second half, when Scotland international Che Adams slotted home in the 48th minute to equalise. Saints wasted two great chances to complete the turnaround as the Old Trafford fans grew more and more frustrated about another game that was slipping out of their team’s hands. Cristiano Ronaldo thought he had scored a late winner for United, only for his close-range strike to be ruled out for offside. Veteran forward Ronaldo has now failed to score in any of his last six appearances in all competitions. The last time he had a longer run without a goal at club level was a run of seven games in December 2008 and January 2009. The draw means United remain fifth in the standings on 40 points from 24

The chances kept coming, with Sancho making one count at the far post after Bruno Fernandes had set Rashford free down the right. The England forward picked out Sancho at the back post, and he could not miss. From there on, until the interval, it was all Saints, with Stuart Armstrong twice going close before Perraud was denied by a fine save by United goalkeeper David de Gea. After conceding two minutes after halftime at Burnley, it was déjà vu for United fans as Adams slotted home his sixth league goal of the season to level. ISL: ATKMB move to second spot

MAGAO, FEB 12 (PTI): ATK Mohun Bagan rode on Liston Colaco’s brilliant show to climb to the second spot after they beat wooden spooners NorthEast United FC 3-1 in the Indian Super League here on Saturday. Suhair Vadakkepeedika (17th) gave NEUFC the lead early on before Joni Kauko (22nd) drew level only for Liston (45th) to make it 2-1 just before half time. Liston was all over NEUFC in the second half as he fed Manvir Singh (52nd) for the team’s third goal before making way for Kiyan Nassiri in the 66th minute to cap off another brilliant night. The result means ATKMB are now on 26 points from 14 games, two adrift of leaders Hyderabad FC who have played two matches more. NEUFC remained rock-bottom with 10 points from 17 games. ATKMB extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches. ATKMB missed the services of key players Hugo Boumous and Carl

McHugh as both picked up injuries in the last game. As expected, the Mariners started on the front foot with Liston Colaco’s early corner posing little threat and Manvir Singh’s effort saved by Subhasish Roy Choudhury. Against the run of play, NEUFC took the lead. Marcelinho got a loose ball in the middle of the park and ran at the ATKMB defence to then find Suhair who rifled home from the edge of the box

to beat Amrinder Singh in goal. ATKMB got back in the game soon after cutting short NEUFC’s joy as Kauko fired home from outside the area after being set up by Colaco with no NorthEast United shirt closing the Finland international down. Suhair tried to double his lead but shot over before Pritam Kotal drilled a free header wide from a corner. Just before halftime, the Mariners took the lead

riding a Colaco strike to make it his seventh goal of the season. Kauko turned provider this time, laying the ball up for Colaco after an incisive run for the latter to slam the ball into the bottom right corner. ATKMB moved up a gear in the second period, Manvir finding the back of the net as early as the 52nd minute after the exceptional Colaco snatched possession to send Manvir in the clear as the latter cut back to beat his marker and slot home past Subhashish. Head coach Juan Ferrando also replaced Prabir Das with Sandesh Jhingan at half time, the star defender playing for the first time this season since returning from Croatian club HNK Šibenik. NEUFC created a host of chances after falling behind with Imran Khan, Hernan Santana and Marco Sahanek coming close to scoring. In the end, the green and maroon shirts held on to their lead and made it two wins in two games to exert their authority.
