Growth rate of active cases
NEW DELHI, JUL 11 (PTI/AGENCIES): Giving rise to fresh worries about the COVID-19 pandemic rearing its head again, the R-factor, which indicates the speed at which the infection is spreading in the country, has risen recently leading to a sluggish pace in the decline of active cases while Kerala and North East states have emerged as regions of concern. The R-number, or the effective transmission rate, has rapidly increased for the first time since the peak of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India, leaving medical professionals in worry. The transmissibility rate that was steadily dropping until the last week of June has seen a sudden spike between June 20 and July 7 as the country witnesses massive crowds at multiple tourist and religious places. This is despite the nationwide tally of new cases remaining low, revealed an analysis by researchers at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Chennai. The R-factor has increased slightly to 0.88 in June-end after being at its lowest-ever value of 0.78 from mid-May till late last month, it showed. Sitabhra Sinha, who led the team of researchers, said the ‘R’ for India is still below one, so the number of active cases is decreasing at a much slower rate. The same trend of slowing

down in the rate of decline in active cases is also seen in many states. What is R-Number The R number is a way of rating coronavirus or any transmissible disease’s ability to spread. It is the number of people that one infected person will pass on a virus to, on average. In case the R-value is higher than one, then the number of cases keeps increasing. However, if it is lower the disease will eventually stop spreading, because not enough new people are being infected to sustain the outbreak. “India’s R has increased a bit to 0.88 from June-end after being at the lowest ever value of 0.78 (since the pandemic began in March last year) from mid-May till late last month,” Sinha said. This means, every 100 infected people on average pass on the infection to 88 other individuals. If R is lesser than 1, it means the number of newly infected people is lower than the

number of infected people in the preceding period which means the disease incidence is going down, the lead researcher said. “The smaller the value of R is, the faster the disease is on decline. Conversely, if R is greater than 1, the number of infected people is increasing in each round -- technically, this is what we call the epidemic phase. The bigger the number is than 1, the faster the rate of spreading of the disease in the population,” Sinha added. “Kerala showed a brief spike in cases and its R continues to hover close to 1. The North East region is of great concern. Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and possibly Tripura are showing a rise in the number of cases,” Sinha pointed out. Of the top 10 states that recorded the highest positivity rates in India between 23 June and 7 July, seven were from the Northeast, with Sikkim registering the highest figures. When the second wave of the CO-
VID-19 infection was at its peak, the overall R-value in the country was estimated to be 1.37 between March 9 to April 21. It declined to 1.18 between April 24 to May 1 and then to 1.10 between April 29 to May 7, according to the analysis. Between May 9 and 11, the R-value was estimated to be around 0.98. It then to 0.82 from May 14 to May 30. The R-value was 0.78 from May 15 to June 26 and 0.88 from June 20 to July 7. In Kerala, the R-value is estimated to be around 1.10. As for the North Eastern states, the R for Manipur is 1.07, Meghalaya 0.92, Tripura 1.15, Mizoram 0.86, Arunachal Pradesh 1.14, Sikkim 0.88, Assam 0.86. R i s i n g C OV I D - 1 9 cases in Kerala, coupled with the recent outbreak of the Zika virus, is a matter of concern for the health authorities as the southern state battles to bring down daily new infections. Earlier this month, Manindra Agarwal, a scientist of a government panel tasked with modelling of COVID-19 cases, said the third wave of coronavirus could hit the peak between October-November if Covid appropriate behaviour is not followed, but may see half the daily cases recorded during the second surge. Agarwal also said the third wave could spread faster if any new virulent variant emerges.
S H I L LO N G, J U L 1 1 (AGENCIES): Assam’s proposed Cow Protection Bill, which aims to stop transportation or use the state for transporting cattle, has now posed a problem for its Christian-majority neighbouring states. Beef is popular in Christian-majority states like Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram. Cattle from different parts of the country reaches the states through Assam. While Christian-majority states like Nagaland and Mizoram are yet to react to the proposed bill, Meghalaya has said they would seek the Centre’s intervention if Assam’s Cow Protection Bill hampers the people and economy of Meghalaya. Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma said if there is an issue that will hamper the people and the economy of Meghalaya, then the matter would be taken up not only with the Assam government but the Centre as well. He said all steps would be taken to ensure that the transit of the cattle meant for Meghalaya should not be hampered because of the law that’s being passed by Assam. “But we have not seen the copy of the law what it says, we will need to examine what the terms and conditions are and how they plan to do it,” Sangma said.

on school fee waiver
DIMAPUR, JUL 11 (NPN): Reacting to the ongoing clamour for waiving school fee, All Nagaland Private Schools’ Association (ANPSA) has clarified that as it was organisation of different private schools that were run individually or by bodies with their own rules and regulations, it could not ask them to give concession, other than requesting. Mentioning that the association fully understood and sympathised with the public over the current situation, ANPSA president Dr Andrew Ahoto in a press release said, “We as an organisation are here for one another to help and supplement rather than to draft decrees and accords.” To make matters worse, he said private schools suffered from non-payment of fees by many parents, sometimes up to couple
of years, even as different schools had different fee structures depending on the kinds of facilities and faculty provided. Therefore, Ahoto said critics must know fully-well that it was the sheer discretion of an individual to choose a school according to one’s educational needs and a polished upbringing. He also urged those who blindly criticised private schools to look into facts and make a thorough analysis before making wild assumptions or accusations. Nonetheless, he claimed that the schools were also trying to ease the situation for the affected parents, adding that many were even making various cuts in schools fees and monthly instalments in order to help the parents as well as the students. Challenge of bio-diversity in Nagaland Tsüngrochetla Walling
DIMAPUR, JUL 11 (NPN): Decades of wanton plunder of forest in Nagaland has caused immense damage to the ecology and environment and extinction of rare flora and fauna. The loss of verdant forests such as the erstwhile Rangapahar Reserve Sanctuary to constant illegal felling of valuable trees and successive encroachments has reduced the once lush and natural forest from around 21,000 Acres to hardly 300 Acres today. Article 371A that guarantees the ownership of land on the people and not to the government, is an issue that has not facilitated protection and promotion of biodiversity. In the midst of all, there are several communities have come up to promote Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) to respond to the need for sustainability. Success stories of Lemsachenlok in Longleng district, a nature biodiversity group formed by churchman Y. Nuklu Phom is a notable example of persistence against all odds. Phom had won two Awards – the prestigious Whitley Award in May this year for his work for Amur Falcons and earlier India Biodiversity Award in 2018. The other notable success story of conservation has been the The Khonoma Nature Conservation & Tragopan Sanctuary (KNCTS) which was awarded the prestigious India Biodiver-
Over 200 delta variant cases in Manipur Correspondent
IMPHAL, JUL 11: Amid the surge in Covid-19 cases, Manipur has reported over 200 Delta variant positive cases in the state. Informing that 205 Covid-19 variant (B.1.617.2 strain) have been confirmed till date Integrate Disease Surveillance Programme Manipur Sunday urged the public to use face mask even in family settings. IDSP had confirmed the spread of the Delta variant for the first time when 18 of 20 Nasopharyngeal swabs were tested in a laboratory outside the state on June 18 last. Later, 69 more cases of the variant were detected on July 2 last. Meanwhile, the state recorded 911 fresh positive cases, the second highest single-day spike since the first COVID-19 case was registered in March last year.
Suspended over 22,500 accounts: Twitter in 1st compliance report NEW DELHI, JULy 11 (IANS): Micro-blogging platform Twitter filed its first grievance redressal report as required under India’s new IT norms, wherein the company said that it has suspended 22,564 accounts for “child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity” and “promotion of terrorism”. It also said that it has acted against 133 posts over several reasons including harassment and privacy infringement. The data pertains to the period of May 26, 2021 to June 25, 2021 that included content on Twitter. This includes complaints received from individual users with accom-
panying court orders, it said. “We receive complaints in our Grievance Officer - India channel that relate to account verification, account access, or seeking assistance or information regarding an account or Twitter’s enforcement actions that are not included in
the data below. The majority of complaints received in this channel during this reporting period fell into these categories,” the report said. “In addition to the above data, we processed 56 grievances which were appealing Twitter account suspensions. These were all resolved and the appropriate responses were sent. We overturned 7 of the account suspensions based on the specifics of the situation, but the other accounts remain suspended.” Further, Twitter has also appointed Vinay Prakash as its Resident Grievance Officer (RGO) for the country. The micro-blogging site had
informed the Delhi High Court last week that it will take eight weeks to appoint a resident grievance officer in compliance with the new IT rules. Prakash comes with a public policy background and will work towards easing off the ongoing tensions between Twitter and the IT ministry, which now has a new minister in Ashwini Vaishnaw who made it clear on day one that Twitter has to follow the law of the land. On its portal, Twitter has updated the grievance officer contact information for users in India, naming Prakash as its RGO and providing an email contact ID.

sity Awards 2021 under the category “Sustainable Use of Biological Resources.” KNCTS had also won the award in 2018. Traditional wildlife hunting is the bane of protection of wildlife in Nagaland: State’s Chief Wildlife Warden, Vedpal Singh told Nagaland Post that traditional practice of hunting wild life remains a big hurdle towards promoting biodiversity. He believes that Wildlife Laws have made hunting illegal to benefit people but it needs to be followed up with community participation. When it was pointed out that hunting was a traditional activity as source of food, Singh said this can be substituted by promoting piggery, poultry etc. M e a n w h i l e, w h e n asked to comment on issues concerning biodiversity in Nagaland, Siddharth Edake, a Fellow and area convenor of the Centre for Biodiversity and Ecosystems Services (CBES) at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi, said that when the
Nagaland forest department invited TERI to do a state wide survey of CCAs in the state, the team found that Nagaland had 407 CCAs and that almost one third of them were active. It may be mentioned here that many more CCAs may have been established today, as the study was conducted in 2014 to 2015. During this documentation, Siddharth learnt that the major challenge was that the CCAs were not recognised by the central and state government and because of this they had “no financial support or legal recognition”. He said that the people were conserving good patches of land that they could otherwise use for timber purpose as and get joint financial benefits but they had chosen not to and instead conserve the lands. “We prepared a policy to recognise these CCAs and tried to push it so that the government of India recognises them but somehow it did not move forward which was very unfortunate”, he lamented. UPRF c-in-c shot dead; police point to infighting DIPHU, JUL 11 (PTI) Selfstyled commander-in- chief of insurgent group United People’’s Revolutionary Front (UPRF) was killed on Sunday by his colleagues in Karbi Anglong district of Assam, police said. Manggin Kholhou alias Veerappan was killed when an argument broke out among the cadres in Kheng-
pibung area in the remote district, they said. “They had a bitter squabble over some issues and it led to firing at each other. Veerappan was killed in the incident,” a police officer said. The body of the insurgent has been sent for post- mortem at Diphu Medical College and Hospital, he added.
RPP seeks age relaxation for civil service aspirants DIMAPUR, JUL 11 (NPN): Newly floated Rising People’s Party (RPP) has requested the state cabinet consider age relaxation for Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) and Nagaland Staff Selection Board on humanitarian grounds since the exams could not be conducted due to the Covid pandemic. RPP president Joel Naga and general secretary Amai Chingkhu pointed out that the last NPSC exam was conducted in 2019 and examination for NPSC combined civil services exam and combined technical services examination for 2020 was yet to be conducted. While admitting that the Covid-19 pandemic had thrown normal life out of gear, RPP however emphasised that the State government should ensure that no section of people was victimised. For instance, if a candidate had had his last chance of appearance in 2020, then his/her case should be con-
sidered and relaxation in age given whenever NPSC decides to conduct the exams, they pointed out. Recalling that the State government had announced setting up of Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) exactly a year back and formulated the NSSB Regulations, 2020 subsequently, Naga and Chingkhu said they therefore expected the government would desist from conducting departmental exams henceforth. However, they said it had come to their notice that some departments conducted departmental exams in 2020 even after NSSB was set up on the ground that the board was yet to be operational. Hence, they wanted to know if NPSC exams in 2020 were cancelled due to the pandemic, why departmental exams were conducted in the same year. They requested chief secretary to issue a clarification since this was a very serious allegation. K Y M C

NVCO recalled that during the later part of 2020 when the State government had imposed Covid cess on fuel and motor spirits, it had called for its rollback as the common people were suffering due to skyrocketing of prices as the government lacked an effective mecha-

Assam-Mizoram border: 2 blasts inside Mizoram
GUWAHATI, JUL 11 (PTI): Aday after a suspected IED blast was carried out inside Cachar district of Assam allegedly by miscreants from Mizoram during an eviction drive, two back to back explosions took place on Sunday along the interstate border on the side of the neighbouring state, a police source said. Tension is running high in Khulicherra area of the district, where people from Mizoram have reportedly entered upto 6.5 kilometres inside Assam land a few days ago, following which the Assam Police along with civil administration carried out an eviction drive. “Two blast sounds were heard coming from the Mizoram side at 2.40 am and 2.43 am. The CRPF, which is a neutralforce deployed at Khulicherra Point-II, has been asked to enquire into the suspected blasts on the Mizoram side,” an Assam Police source told PTI. The situation is at present normal although ten-

sion still prevails and Assam Police personnel are in alert position in the entire border area, he added. On Saturday, an explosion took place targeting a delegation of Assam government officials, including senior police officials, who were on a visit to oversee the construction of a road along the border, but no casualty was reported in the incident. Initially it was believed to be a grenade attack but the police later suspected that the miscreants used an IED, the source said. Additional Director
General of Police (Border) Harmeet Singh is camping at the spot and monitoring the situation. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he has written to his Mizoram counterpart Zoramthanga to settle the border dispute by using satellite mapping of the actual border locations. “For complete peace, we should hand over the inter-state border to central police forces after we fix the border issue. We are building roads within the Constitutional boundary

Earlier, after taking charge of the Ministry of DoNER, Reddy had said the kind of transformation that has taken place in the northeast in the last seven years in all spheres of life under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is both incredible and unprecedented. He had said under Modi’s guidance, he will try to complete all the pending projects in the region within the stipulated timeframes. Meanwhile, in a tweet, Reddy said the construction of the Jiribum-Imphal railway line over the Barak river will ensure fast and safe mobility of passengers as well as goods.
of Assam. We will not take an inch of land from Mizoram,” he added. There has been a long border dispute between Assam and Mizoram in that area along with other locations in Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts of the Barak valley. The latest tussle started on Saturday when around 25-30 people from Mizoram came up to 25 metres ahead of Khulicherra CRPF camp and tried to encroach the land inside Assam, attempting to stop the forest track clearing work and prevent PWD
officials from constructing a road, a senior police official said. “On receiving the information, the police rushed to the spot and observed that Mizo people, including women, obstructed the route at Khulicherra leading towards Upper Painom LP school which is around 6.5 kilometres inside AssamMizoram border. “The crowd swelled up to 50-60 civilians. Around the same time, one Additional SP rank officer of the Mizoram Police arrived at the spot and he was asked to remove the illegal encroachment by Mizo people. However, the obstruction was not removed,” the official told PTI. Assam Police officers then announced over loudspeakers that their congregation inside Assam territory is illegal and they should disperse peacefully, but they continued their aggressive and abusive behaviour towards government officials on duty and kept threatening them with sharp weapons, he claimed.

No total lockdown in Itanagar for now I TA NAG A R , J U L 1 1 (PTI): The Ar unachal Pradesh government has turned down the request for a week-long total lockdown in the state capital from July 12 but suggested aslew of measures to check the spike in COVID-19 cases. In a letter to Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, Capital Deputy Commissioner Talo Potom on Saturday sought approval for a total lockdown for a week from Monday, citing the rise inCOVID-19 cases. He said that in view of the rise in the cases in the Capital region, the administration convened a meeting on Friday with all the stakeholders, who recommended
patients testedpositive for the infection. It also recorded 426 cases on July6, State Surveillance Officer Dr LobsangJampa said. The Capital Complex region registered the highestnumber of new cases at 131, followed by Lohit (54) and WestKameng (48). The fresh fatalities were recorded in the CapitalComplex region and Anjaw district. The state now has 3,741 active cases,
we invite beneficiaries for some government schemes, we always take pride. But for today’s event, we are neither proud nor happy,” he said. In Assam, 6,159 coronavirus-positive people have died, including 1,347 due to comorbidities, he said. “ T h o u g h we h ave identified 873 widows, we expect that2,000-2,500 will be there. The enrolment process is going on in districts,” the chief minister said. The Assam government has already launched a scheme to provide Rs 3,500 per month to children, who lost their parents due to COVID-19. “I have requested the finance minister to provide some funds to give something to other COVID-19 affected families. Assam has done something before other states have taken su-
chinitiatives,” Sarma said. The state Budget for 2021-22 will be presented on July16 by Finance Minister Ajanta Neog. The Budget Session of the assembly will begin on Monday. The beneficiaries of ‘Orunodoi’ and ‘Widow Pension’ programmes are also eligible for the onetime financial assistance under the ‘Chief Minister’s COVID-19 Widows Support Scheme’. As per the scheme, the beneficiary’s husband should be a COVID-19 positive patient at the time of death, and it should be certified by the StateLevel COVID Death Audit Board. “A beneficiary must belong to a low-income family having an annual income less than Rs 5 lakh,” the scheme details mentioned.
GANGTOK, JUL 11 (PTI): A major traffic jam was witnessed on NH 10 on Sunday as several landslides blocked Sikkim’s arterial highway that connects the Himalayan state with the rest of India, BRO sources said. However, many light vehicles were seen taking a detour via Darjeeling in West Bengal to reach their destinations, they said. Heavy rain triggered a series of small landslides since Saturday night and a major one on Sunday morning in the29th Mile area between Teesta and Rambi in West Bengal, completely blocking the highway. Serpentine queues of vehicles were witnessed for more than 1 km on both sides of the landslide spot, the sources said.

SMC delay: Government may go for project retendering Correspondent SHILLONG, JUL 11: Unlike the Tura Medical College, the construction of the much-hyped Shillong Medical College (SMC) in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong is still a far cry. A controversial firm, Kali Pradip Chaudhuri (KPC) that signed an agreement with the state government nine years ago has not started the construction of the much-awaited Shillong Medical College till date, citing changing of site as the reason. Moreover, the firm had asked the Meghalaya government to increase the rate. “The project has been delayed because the location was not feasible. There are also some land issues which are almost resolved,” chief minister, Conrad K Sangma said. When asked if the state government would like to cancel the agreement with the firm as the construction of the Shillong Medical College did not start for almost nine years since 2012, Sangma’ said, “We cannot simply say that we will cancel it (agreement), as it may entail legal complications. Things are not that simple since there are legal issues involved here.” The chief minister said the state government will have to explore the possibility of retendering the proposed Shillong Medical College as the firm that had signed an agreement, had requested for increased rates due to the price escalation. “We may have to go for retendering since we cannot
just comply with the request of the firm to increase the rates. It will not be possible to give the firm a new rate without calling for tenders,” he said. On the signing of an agreement with a controversial firm KPC which has to allegedly deal with lawsuits in the United States of America, the Chief Minister said the firm was selected and the agreement was signed by the previous government. The KPC, reportedly has to deal with some lawsuits in the United States where it was alleges that Dr Kali P Chaudhuri, a controversial doctor turned medical businessman, engaged in a fraud, racketeering and corruption with respect to a number of inter related medical companies. “We did not sign with the firm this agreement because it was signed by the previous government in 2012,” Sangma said. On the status of the Tura Medical College, he said that construction of the medical college is going on at a fast pace. In fact, the foundation stone for the Shillong Medical College had been laid by former chief minister Mukul Sangma who is now the leader of Opposition after an agreement with the KPC was signed in November, 2012. Though the KPC is yet to build the medical college, but the firm had already proposed to hike the fee structure from Rs 3.5 lakh for full medical course to Rs 10 lakh, but the state government has not taken a call on this.

Fuel circle
E
ven as the Congress is on its 10-day nationwide agitation against daily fuel hikes by the government, which began on July 7 till July 17, Congress leader in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, on July 10, claimed that the Centre has earned Rs 4.91 lakh crore revenue as petrol and diesel prices have been hiked 69 times since January 1 this year. If true, then it is a huge profiteering by the government while vehicle owners across the country are groaning due to the upward spiral in prices of both petrol and diesel. The Modi government has reaped a huge bonus through taxes on oil and related sectors which have been a major source of revenue for both central and state government governments since crude oil prices began falling in 2015. As per official statement, the central government has collected Rs 6.85 lakh crore from the motorists among others towards tax levied on petrol and diesel in the last three financial years from 2018-19 to 2020-21. It was Rs 2.13 lakh crore in 2018-19, Rs 1.78 lakh crore in 2019-20 and Rs 2.94 lakh in 2020-21. In contrast, tax collections from petrol and diesel in 2013 during the UPA-II was about Rs 52,537 crore. Estimated total excise duty collections on petrol and diesel stand at Rs 3.9 lakh crore in 2021, a 77% jump from the previous year’s Rs 2.2 lakh crore. This, even as total petrol and diesel consumption during the year contracted by 10.6%, impacted as they were by lockdowns enforced to contain the pandemic. The extra revenue comes from excise duty hikes the Centre made between March and May 2020, siphoning off to the exchequer the benefits of the summer’s record fall in crude oil prices. The increases (Rs 13 per litre for petrol and Rs 16 per litre for diesel) have helped offset the fall in other sources of tax revenue, but at the cost of keeping retail fuel prices high. Unlike retail fuel prices, which have steadily risen by 32% for petrol and 36% for diesel between March 16, 2020 (when the first set of hikes were imposed) to now, crude oil prices plunged from $68 in January 2020, to a low of below $20 in April 2020, before slowly climbing back to breach January levels in December 2020. The increased levies on petrol and diesel per litre respectively is just the latest in a long series of fuel tax hikes since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This has made India now ranked among the world’s most taxed consumers of transport fuel. Central and state taxes accounted for over 69% of retail fuel prices in the national capital on May 6, handily beating even highly-taxed European economies; indeed an achievement of sorts. Tax-starved states have sharply hiked Value Added Taxes (VAT) on fuel to mop up revenue collections. All these increases have been passed on to consumers by Centre-run oil marketing firms (OMC). States can afford to reduce VAT to mitigate the suffering of the people while the Centre can help by providing added grants to states from the profit earned from daily price hikes. This way, the end users will be benefitted and in turn the country also benefits.
DailyDevotion The Spiritually Vigorous Saint …that I may know Him… —Philippians 3:10 A saint is not to take the initiative toward self-realization, but toward knowing Jesus Christ. A spiritually vigorous saint never believes that his circumstances simply happen at random, nor does he ever think of his life as being divided into the secular and the sacred. He sees every situation in which he finds himself as the means of obtaining a greater knowledge of Jesus Christ, and he has an attitude of unrestrained abandon and total surrender about him. The Holy Spirit is determined that we will have the realization of Jesus Christ in every area of our lives, and He will bring us back to the same point over and over again until we do. Self-realization only leads to the glorification of good works, whereas a saint of God glorifies Jesus Christ through his good works. Whatever we may be doing— even eating, drinking, or washing disciples’ feet— we have to take the initiative of realizing and recognizing Jesus Christ in it. Every phase of our life has its counterpart in the life of Jesus. Our Lord realized His relationship to the Father even in the most menial task. “Jesus, knowing…that He had come from God and was going to God,…took a towel…and began to wash the disciples’ feet…” (John 13:3-5). The aim of a spiritually vigorous saint is “that I may know Him…” Do I know Him where I am today? If not, I am failing Him. I am not here for self-realization, but to know Jesus Christ. In Christian work our initiative and motivation are too often simply the result of realizing that there is work to be done and that we must do it. Yet that is never the attitude of a spiritually vigorous saint. His aim is to achieve the realization of Jesus Christ in every set of circumstances.

O
ne of the greatest privileges we as humans beings have today is the privilege every society has to correct and educate ourselves by looking at how we have behaved ourselves that appeared in the instant electronic Social medias or in the daily news papers, just like we look at ourselves in the mirror and correct what we appear lacking. If my perceptions are right, today, the Naga Society often behaves similar to how the generally peace loving Jews of Jerusalem behaved like a mob at the incitement a few from outside some 62 years after the death of Jesus Christ in the city. ACTS. 21:27-30 records: “when….some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul at the temple. They stirred up the whole crowd and seized him, shouting, ‘Men of Israel help us! This is the man who teaches all men everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holly place.’ (They had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with Paul and assumed Paul had brought him into the temple area.) ” Luke wrote in just one sentence and aptly: “the whole city was ‘roused’ and ‘in uproar’, and the people came running to [the Temple Area] from all directions.” The people believed what a few in a religious group, intolerant, racial and prone to violence, publicly and loudly shouted to others the assumed allegations against their opponents; in this case against Paul and the Way People, the Pioneers of
The Naga in the 21st century
Christian Religion. The mob was about to kill Paul when the overlord Roman Army Officer of the city, hearing the commotion, went and snatched Paul out of the mob, and took him to the Army Camp. How the normal crowd went insane, unreasonable and unconscionable only on the incitement of a few, is a poignant question: (There was no social-media, cell phones or daily news papers at that time!) Acts 16: 16-24 also records that at Philippi, the principal city of 2500 years old Greek civilization at the time of Jesus, the usual law abiding crowd about the town behaved in the same manner as those at Jerusalem at the stirring up of a few selfinterests: There was a slave girl in the city, a fortune Teller; “She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.” For many days she followed Paul and his companions in the city and continuously shouted: “these men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” The unauthorised preacher disturbed Paul’s message of profound Gospel of Jesus Christ to the people. And Paul told her: “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her. At the moment spirit left her.” “When the owners of the slave girl realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities. They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar by
advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.” “The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the Magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten. After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison.” The irresponsible market-crowd, including the crowd-influenced Magistrates, without any investigation of the case of the allegations of the slave Owner, indicates the servile society of the day. The Naga today, in towns and cities in particular, imitate mob culture; act false, imbalanced, irrational, artificial, impatiently reactive and violent. Some years ago in Dimapur, at the allegation of a certain unmarried young local girl crying wolf against her non-local male companion in an arranged hotel room on complained of breaking a personal private promise by her outsider companion, the tribal crowd swiftly went irrational. The Naga crowd, quickly roused into mob frenzy, sided the local girl. It seized the man, did him violence and firstly threw him into the Jail. The allegation of the local girl against the so-called ‘illegal Muslim immigrant Trader’ swiftly went round Dimapur, the commercial centre of Nagaland. The man was accused allegedly of forced sexual act. The unbalanced, furious crowd rushed to the state central Jail, over-powered the small Jail guards, forced open the gate, pulled the man out, stripped him, bound his hands at his back and pulled him along the road on ground to the city tower and hung his now
dead body there. The mob did insane, inhuman acts on the dead person! At Ephesus, [Acts. 19:23-29]: the crowd behaved the same manner as like in Nagaland naïve, racial, prone to violence, easily excited and spiritually bankrupt. Paul preached a spiritual living God, the most high; not made with human hands. Many were attracted to the Idea, but the teachings adversely affected the business interest of Demetrius the Silver Smith, and Craftsmen of the image of Roman Goddess Artemis; fertility Diana of the Greeks. “About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way. Demetrius called all the Craftsmen and said, ‘Men, you know we receive a good income from this business. And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced that led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited, and the goddess herself, who is worship throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.” “Soon the whole city was in uproar. The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there.” Luke has apt description of the quality of behaviour of the crowd of the Times. The Naga society on the whole today appears: lost of its composure, the educated is perplexed for the morrow;
the uneducated ignorance has blissful majority for the future; and as for the democratic leaders of the people; most sit on the wall for the chance of ‘Aya Ram today: Gaya Ram for tomorrow.’ No Revolution anywhere in the world succeeds without the majority support of the people: the Naga Revolutions today runs on a force of the minority factory of its force; they wait like Ulysses in the island of Cerci not knowing the times of the Naga people. T h e e l e c t e d Representatives with plenipotentiary powers use NGOs in paid political consultations for governance of the land. Beginning with foreign trained one-man FNR, the Global foreign educated NGOs with many home grown NGOs based on State, Race, Tribe, Village, Gender and every tradition and cultural divisions of the people, claim every rights to every say, on every matter of the Naga; all of them however know, the exact respectful distance with the best armed. M o s t N G O s h ave names known to its core members that quietly select each other and formalises the selection in a system of General Meetings where any suggested nomination is rarely rejected. Most NGOs have no Membership Register or Membership Fee and a constitution drafted and managed for the convenience of a few. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the King’s Horses, And all the king’s men, Couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again.
A g rea t num ber of Organizations once suddenly formed a Joint Forum and issued an Ultimatum to the Chief Minister to immediately abdicate the Office for alleged reason of having lost the confidence of the Forum, presumptuously formed just a few days before. The Chief Minister held he can’t resign because two third of the Assembly openly supports him from the floor of the August House. Great god! Even the Churches supported the Joint Forum’s demand, citing the decision of the Forum is the will of all the people; the will of the People is the Will from Above! T h e r e wa s a g r e a t agitation against the Chief Minister and Kohima was burned as has never ever been seen before against the objection of the Kohima Village! Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall, All the king’s Horses, And all the king’s men, Couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again. The Naga must make all areas of our lives into the Democratic System, Peace and Non-violence if we like to enjoy a sovereign progressive democratic open state of peaceful life. It is time the Naga Society owns the Responsibility of their actions, on their own will decide themselves and develop a civil democratic System of Society in Peace and Non-violence; everyone of us has a responsibility, not just the leaders or others only. I hope the Naga Society have the Ear to hear and see us ourselves in our own mirror. Thepfulhouvi Solo
All Nagaland Private Schools’ Association shares it’s genuine concern
E
ven during Pandemic crisis, Private Schools have been working beyond the call of duty to make sure that education does not fail. The very moment lockdown started clamping in our State, almost all Private Schools had to take up new extraordinar y challenges never imagined off and that is in creating a conducive learning environment for the students. As such many challenging steps had to be taken to counter this new uncharted and unexplored phenomenon with many creative ideas. This new normal indeed brought about several adaptive challenges for all Mentors who have been working selflessly, but sadly there was hardly anyone to cheer for the Private Schools. Although in Private Schools, Students enjoy all the necessary facilities with minimal fees, as compared to schools outside the State. In recent times there has been much criticism from various quarters about the fees collected by Private S c h o o l s. B u t w h e n we make a logical analysis, how will the managements o f P r iva t e S c h o o l s p ay reasonable salaries to the private teachers as compared to the government teachers. Regardless, of the occurring criticisms the truth remains that they are surviving not because of the fees alone, but due to the fact that the pr o pr i e t o r s o r m i ss io naided societies either have supplementary businesses, ventures, missionary funds and various other assistances which aids in the development of the private schools. Some of the private schools have been forced to shut down while many are on the verge of being closed because of no alternative source to keep the schools up and running (Just imagine what will happen if all Private Schools in Nagaland had to shut down completely, what will be the consequence of the State?). The Private Schools, should in fact receive true patronage and recognition as they have put in many of their own resources and effort in bringing about educational benefits to so many students from varied backgrounds. It
must be seriously noted that since Pandemic started there has been a sharp decline of approximate 20% students and above in almost all Private Schools. Who will rescue the Children of tomorrow? While, ANPSA thoroughly understands and sympathizes with the public in pertinence to the current situation and the troubles we have all experienced, however, it is significant that we first of all understand that ANPSA is an organisation made of different Private schools who run individually or by various organisation with a set of their own governing rules and regulations, as such no one individual or a single institution can dictate the other to give out concession on the will of the organisation, other than requesting. We as an organisation are here for one another to help and supplement rather than to draft decrees and accords. Besides, it is not that the schools on their own stand are not doing anything to help improve the effected conditions of the parents. In fact, there are many private schools that are actually making various cuts in schools fees and monthly instalments in order to help the parents as well as the students. In this regard, it is essential to take note of the fact that many private schools in Nagaland offer unsolicited fee-concessions and special benefits and scholarships to many deserving students and students from marginalized families, not forgetting the benefits that go into educating the wards of the school staff members, in terms of 50% or even 100% concessions in fees. To make matters worse, private schools suffer from non-payment of fees by many defaulting parents in some cases even amounting up to couple of years. Again, the Private Schools have different fee structures depending on the kinds of facilities and faculty provided. Therefore, critics must know fully-well that it is at the sheer discretion of an individual to choose any school according to one’s educational needs and a polished up-bringing. Thus, it is pertinent that those who blindly criticize the private schools should look into
facts and make a thorough analysis before making wild assumptions or accusations. That said, there are also other major aspects which we cannot overlook as each and every private schools have to pay their employees from the teachers and administration to the staff members, drivers, security, housekeeping etc even if Schools are closed. H oweve r, m a n y f a i l t o acknowledge the compromises the schools have to put up in order to meet the demands of different factors. Some organizations are prying to get cheap leverage by showing concerns in the public eye by manipulating public emotions in the form of fake empathy to gain their own alternative motives and to tur n the situation into a platform to spring their own success. Such organisations should first of all see and understand both sides of the coin before jumping to conclusions. If an organisation were wise enough and truly want to help and solve the plight of the public, wouldn’t it be more sensible to first of all check the proper source of funds that has been provided by the centre along with its usage? Is it not wiser to know how central funds are being mismanaged and wasted on insignificant areas before going against private schools who are functioning without any aid or funds from the government? In addition to which, many individuals immensely fail to be grateful that their children are receiving quality educational facilities in the private schools in Nagaland itself without having much tension for their children’s welfare and without spending undue extravagant money for sending them to private schools outside the State. The educational facilities provided by some of the Private Schools in Nagaland are at par with some of the best schools outside the State. Also making the children pursue their studies in Nagaland saves them from undue harassment and dangers that they might be exposed to while pursuing their studies away from their home state in hostile conditions while also giving the parents ample opportunity
of monitoring their children’s performance and upbringing without any fear, stress and tensions about their children’s whereabouts. When it comes to Board examinations, each year, the private schools have always proven better in almost all area and this is made possible due to the dedicated efforts of the private schools. But then the sad reality is that all the credit of Private Schools’ hard work and sacrifices and is fully forgotten and neglected. In spite of the State’s Literacy Rate being raised by us at the National level the State gets all the credit of the literacy rates. Sadly, though the contribution of private schools has been immense in development of education sector in Nagaland and has also brought Nagaland in the map of education in India and in the International sphere, and also the Private Schools which is catering to approximate 75% or more of students in the State, is always side-lined. It is high time that the conscious citizens of the Naga society, various organisation, civil societies etc take up the challenge of recognizing the efforts of the Private Schools in the betterment and development of the State. There is no denying the fact that the Private Schools have given their best in ensuring that the quality of education reaches the expectations of the State Board as well as the society at large. We must also be aware that the private schools across Nagaland are the highest job providers, second only to the State Government. But, after moulding and shaping
the students right from their nursery level to their higher secondary level, by putting all resources to use including the hard labour and pain that goes with it for their holistic upbringing of creating a vast quality human resource for the State and the Nation, the entire credit for the human resource development is left disregarded. Well, it is easier to pick up a diamond and polish it and sell it however, it is a challenge to turn coal into diamonds and this responsibility is selflessly performed mostly by the Private Schools. The narrow attitude and sheer negligence have surely dampened the morale and spirit of many credible and good private schools in our State. Logically, to be fair and square the Central Government must make a policy whereby State Gover nment star t receiving educational funds and distributing the same according to performances of each schools regardless of private or governmental rather than confining funds only to government schools. As such, the Government of Nagaland should come up with a positive step to put into action, a plan whereby the public funds are put to more judicious use. Instead of pouring all the public money in government schools which are non-productive, it should rather provide grants in aid to all Private Schools like paying off at least 50% of the schools fees whereby reducing the burden of the Parents/Guardians at large. It is worth mentioning that in other States huge percentage of Private Schools Teachers
salaries are born by their respective State Government. Why not in Nagaland? Besides the above mentioned, there are also other existing major crisis which need our undivided attention, the biggest being the price hike of various commodities and fuels. Why is no one concerned about this and why is no one questioning about it? This hike in price in all the essential commodities is draining our hard-earned money especially when the public are at their most vulnerable stage. We as consumer and responsible citizens should come together to raise our voices against this unfair price rise which is affecting the condition of all our day to day lives. Nonetheless, we completely understand that the events that have unfolded upon us has left us all bruised and in need of consideration from all grounds, nevertheless despite all these hardships we are undergoing, we still humbly request each private schools to help in their own capacity in whatever ways they can to all deserving students besides the existing ones. In conclusion, let’s all open our eyes to the fact that no person was ever honoured for what he received; honour has always been the reward for what one gave, therefore let us all learn to help one another and grow in unity as one entity for the larger interest of our next generation. Learning to dispose your face masks correctly
Sir,
A lot of face masks, gloves and protective equipment are now showing up on the streets owing to people not disposing them correctly. Most of the gears are bio degradable and not environment friendly. So, the authorities need to stress the need to the public to ensure that they are disposing their masks and gloves responsibly. This is also paramount to contain the spread as it is unhygienic to have used masks or gloves lying around.Different teams around the world are trying to develop more sustainable protective equipment but until then, the onus is on us to act consciously. Till we are all able to use masks that are entirely sustainable, let’s remind each other and ourselves to be mindful when we throw away our masks and gloves. Senchumbeni Kikon, Middle PWD, Kohima

Challenge of bio-diversity in Nagaland (From p-1) He disclosed that the forest department also tried its best to push this policy which was cleared by the state government. However, he said it “got stuck” at the MoEFCC. (Ministr y of Environment Forest and Climate Change) During the documentation at Sukhai, Ghukhuyi and Kivikhu under Zunheboto district as pilot sites Siddharth said after intense engagement with communities, the three villages formally declared a total of 939 hectares of biodiversity rich forest as CCAs in respective villages. He said that there were no problem educating villagers on the importance of conservation but that during the last elections, hunting activity became active at that time. He said poachers were mainly from the rich and affluent sections from Dimapur, Kohima and other big towns. Siddar th felt that ecotourism was the only genuine potential for eco-
nomic transformation in Nagaland. “The only area where we struggle is the condition of roads and if this issue is resolved then I feel ecotourism will be harnessed” he said. He also shared that during documentation in Zunheboto, what was found was that Nagaland needed more “green champions or green warriors”. He also said despite all the talks of conservation, what was lacking is political will to carry forward the plans. “It’s a green state and there is amazing biodiversity but a lot of people have not recognised it at the highest level,” he said. Siddarth said he also found that in Nagaland, communities in general, took huge pride when their efforts were recognised. “Once the government recognises the works and start giving some financial help to the locals, it would really help to push the movement in the right direction”, Siddharth stated. Meanwhile, speak-

ing to Nagaland Post, Y. Nuklu Phom, who was among the six the winners for the prestigious “Whitley Awards 2021” and known as the Amur falcon man of Nagaland said that the government should be sensitive to issues pertaining to the biodiversity and must ensure that the funds are not lacking. “Whatever agendas and projects the responsible department brings, the government must do all it can to execute them and generously support the plans,” he said. He opined that rural communities were more informed than urban dwellers about how use of pesticides for crops had caused water bodies dry up and plant species dying and leading to deforestation. In order to provide sustenance for food, Nuklu said communities require support in various forms such as ecotourism, livelihoods, etc, from the government. He said there was need to recognise these efforts to ensure sustain-
ability. It may be mentioned that Nuklu founded Lemsachenlok, an initiative to protect the biodiversity of his ancestral village, Yaongyimchen. Lemsachenlok has been conserving the forests since 2007. Ever since this mission, roosting Amur Falcons have increased from 50, 000 to one million, making it one of the most successful conservation projects in the North East. Today, Nuklu is working on creating a network of community reserves to form a biodiversity peace corridor uniting 16 villages. Many of these stories involve cooperation and by working together, we make real progress towards a more sustainable future because there may not be much time, but there is hope. It remains to be seen whether the state government would reinforce stringent measures to protect the biodiversity or watch the state’s biodiversity slowly decline.
‘Bulky Cabinet of no use if public investments not higher’ NEW DELHI, JUL 11 (PTI): The CPI(M) on Sunday hit out at the government over reports of a steep fall in infrastructure expenditure and a dip in vaccination rates, saying that a “bulky Cabinet” is of no use if public investments are not higher. In a series of tweets, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said that the Narendra Modi government must spend more to build infrastructure generating jobs and demand. “Change of faces and a bulky cabinet is of no use: stop the ‘thank you’ ad-gimmicks and spend allocated money on vaccines. This is disastrous. When higher public investments are needed to revive the economy and secure livelihoods, government expenditures fall sharply by 41.6 per cent,” he said. He further asked the gover nment to explain where the money is being spent. “Where is the money from ongoing loot of national assets and monstrous petrol hike excise? To feed

‘We need help’: Haiti’s leader requests US troops
PORT-AU-PRINCE (HAITI), JUL 11 (AP): Haiti’s interim government has asked the US and UN to deploy troops to protect key infrastructure as it tries to stabilise the country and prepare for elections in the aftermath of President Jovenel Moise’s assassination. The stunning request for U.S. military support recalled the tumult following Haiti’s last presidential assassination, in 1915, when an angry mob dragged President Vilbrun Guillaume Sam out of the French Embassy and beat him to death. In response, President Woodrow Wilson sent the Marines into Haiti, justifying the American military occupation — which lasted nearly two decades — as a way to avert anarchy. Mathias Pierre, Haiti’s elections minister, defended the government’s request for military assistance, saying in an interview Saturday with The Associated Press that the local police force is weak

and lacks resources. “What do we do? Do we let the country fall into chaos? Private properties destroyed? People killed after the assassination of the president? Or, as a government, do we prevent?” he said. ”We’re not asking for the occupation of the country. We’re asking for small troops to assist and help us. ... As long as we are weak,
I think we will need our neighbours.” On Saturday, a senior Biden administration official said the U.S. has no plans to provide military assistance at this time. The administration will send senior FBI and Department of Homeland Security officials to Port-au-Prince on Sunday to assess the situation and how the U.S. may be able to assist, said the official, who wasn’t autho-
rised to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Haiti also sent a letter to the United Nations requesting assistance, U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said Saturday. The letter asked for troops and security at key installations, according to a U.N. source speaking on condition of anonymity because details of the letter are private. “We definitely need assistance and we’ve asked our international partners for help,” Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph told the AP in a phone interview late Friday. “We believe our partners can assist the national police in resolving the situation.” On Friday, a group of lawmakers announced they had recognized Joseph Lambert, the head of Haiti’s dismantled Senate, as provisional president in a direct challenge to the interim government’s authority. They also recognised as prime minister Ariel
Henry, whom Moïse had selected to replace Joseph a day before he was killed but who had not yet taken office or formed a government. One of those lawmakers, Rosemond Pradel, told the AP that Joseph “is neither qualified nor has the legal right” to lead the country. Joseph, who assumed leadership with the backing of police and the military, said he was “not interested in a power struggle.” “There’s only one way people can become president in Haiti. And that’s through elections,” he said Among the arrested are two Haitian Americans, including one who worked alongside Sean Penn following the nation’s devastating 2010 earthquake. Police have also detained or killed more than a dozen former members of Colombia’s military. Some of the suspects were seized in a raid on Taiwan’s Embassy where they are believed to have sought refuge.

Argentina beat Brazil to win Copa America McGregor breaks leg in loss to Poirier
RIO DE JANEIRO, JUL 11 (AGENCIES): Argentina won their first major title in 28 years on Saturday and Lionel Messi finally won his first medal in a blueand-white shirt when an Angel Di Maria goal gave them a 1-0 win over Brazil and a record-equalling 15th Copa America. Di Maria, starting for just the second time in the Copa, justified his selection by scoring the opener midway through the first half. Renan Lodi failed to cut out a long ball forward from Rodrigo De Paul and Di Maria lobbed the stranded Ederson with aplomb. Brazil piled on the pressure in an exciting second half but even with five strikers on the field they could not get an equaliser against an Argentine defence protected by the outstanding Rodrigo De Paul. “First we have to congratulate our opponents especially for the first half when they neutralised us,” said Brazilian defender Thiago Silva. “In the second half there was no contest - only one team tried to play foot-

ball, the other just wasted time as we knew they would. It’s not an excuse, we didn’t do what we had to, principally in the first half.” Argentina’s win was a particular triumph for Barcelona striker Messi, who picked up his first ever title in a blue-and-white shirt after more than a decade of club and individual honours. The Argentine players surrounded their captain at the final whistle. Goalkeeper Emilian Martinez
celebrated what he called a Maracanazo, a remarkable win at the famous Rio stadium. “I’m speechless,” he said. “I knew my dream would come tr ue, and where better than the Maracanazo and giving the title to the best in the world and fulfilling his dream.” Messi finished the tournament’s joint top goal scorer with four goals and was elected joint best player along with Neymar. But he was quiet throughout the game at
the Maracana stadium and uncharacteristically missed a golden opportunity to wrap the game up with two minutes remaining. When the final whistle went, Argentina TV declared “Argentina Champions, Lionel Messi Champion!” The match itself was a disappointing one, with Argentina the better side in a cagey first half that featured 21 fouls. However, Brazil came out more aggressively in the second period and as
the time ticked on they threw more people forward - and at one point having five recognised strikers on the field. Richarlison had a goal chalked off for offside seven minutes into the second half and then forced Emiliano Martinez into a good stop two minutes later. But as Brazil poured forward gaps, opened up and Argentina missed two clear chances to score in the dying moments of the match. The victory was Argentina’s 15th Copa America triumph and means they draw level with Uruguay as the all-time leading winners. “This is a very big title,” said Argentine coach Lionel Scaloni. “I hope that Argentines can enjoy it. The fans love the team unconditionally and I think they identify with this side that never drops its guard.” Their win extended their sequence of undefeated matches to 20 under Scaloni and handed Brazil their first competitive defeat since they lost to Belgium in the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup.
Conor McGregor holds his leg after suffering an injury against Dustin Poirier during UFC 264 in Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS (NEVADA), JUL 11 (AGENCIES): Conor McGregor suffered a broken leg in another crushing defeat to Dustin Poirier at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, with the fight stopped by doctors at the end of the first round. As a thrilling first fiveminute frame drew to a close, both fighters were still trying to land as McGregor stumbled backwards, trapping his foot under himself and breaking his leg. Medics were immediately called into the octagon and it was clear that McGregor could not continue, prompting referee Herb Dean to declare a stop to the bout on the instructions
of the doctor. Interviewed in the octagon with his leg in a cast, McGregor raged about his misfortune. “I was boxing the head off him, kicking the leg off him, (he was doing) the usual, diving to close the distance. This is not over - if I have to take this outside with him, it’s on outside,” he roared. With McGregor having won at featherweight in 2014 and Poirier extracting revenge at lightweight in Abu Dhabi in January, the run-up to the third fight was punctuated by bad blood between the pair, in marked contrast to a face-off earlier this year where the pair paid each other compliments. Though American
Poirier was fighting on home turf, his entrance to “The Boss” by James Brown was greeted with boos from the sizeable portion of the crowd that was there to support McGregor, and there was no friendly touch of gloves before the fight began. McGregor came out fast, switching between high and low kicks and dancing in and out of range as both fighters maintained a furious pace. The Irish fighter tried a guillotine choke as the fight went to the mat with Poirier in top position, and when he had escaped the choke he rained down thunderous punches and elbows on McGregor. Though McGregor str uck back, Poirier looked set to finish the fight before abruptly breaking off his attack in the final seconds of the round to complain to referee Dean that the Irishman was grabbing at his gloves. As McGregor swung and tried to back away, his footwork let him down, snapping his leg. “He fractured it in one of the checks at the beginning of the fight and he broke it on a punch, for sure ... I felt something, he was kicking me hard,” Poirier said in a post-fight interview.

All-rounder Gregory, who took 3-44, earlier scored 40 in a crucial eighth-wicket stand of 69 with Brydon Carse. It resulted in another impressive win for this inexperienced England side, who lead the series 2-0 going into the final match in Edgbaston on Tuesday. This was also the first cricket match in England to be allowed a capacity crowd since the start of the pandemic, although the attendance was 22,704 - around 75% full.
PM to interact with Oly athletes on Jul 13
NEW DELHI, JUL 11 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with the Indian athletes’ contingent for the Tokyo Olympics on July 13 via video conferencing. The PMO said the interaction by Modi is an endeavour to motivate the athletes ahead of their participation at the games. He had recently reviewed the preparations for the facilitation of the Indian contingent at Tokyo-2020. He had also discussed the in-
spirational journeys of some of the athletes on his Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast, besides urging the nation to come forward and wholeheartedly support them, the PMO noted. A total of 126 athletes across 18 sports disciplines from India will be heading to Tokyo. This is the biggest-ever contingent India is sending to any Olympics, the PMO said, noting that the 69 cumulative events across 18 sport disciplines that India will participate in is also the
highest ever for the country. Highlighting the “notable” firsts in terms of participation, it said for the first time a fencer from India (Bhavani Devi) has qualified for the Olympic games. Nethra Kumanan is the first-ever female sailor from India to qualify for the Olympics, while Sajan Prakash and Srihari Nataraj are the first swimmers from India to qualify for Olympic games by achieving the ‘A’ qualification standard in swimming, it added.

The 34-year-old Serb won 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-4 6-3 in front of a passionate and vocal 15,000 crowd on Centre Court. Seventh seed Berrettini, 25, received loud backing but could not maintain his advantage in his first major final. Top seed Djokovic has now won all three Grand Slam men’s titles in 2021. era after Rod Laver in 1969 - to win the first three majors of the season. And with Djokovic retaining his crown at the All England Club, he has moved
a step closer to becoming the second player to achieve a ‘Golden Slam’. Only Germany’s Steffi Graf in 1988 has ever won all four majors and the
Olympics in a calendar year. Berrettini saved two match points at 5-3 in the fourth set with a controlled volley and a 101mph forehand winner down the line. But the Italian could not fight off the third as he sliced a backhand into the net. Djokovic fell flat on his back with his arms outstretched after sealing a hard-fought victory, while Berrettini’s contrasting emotions on the opposite baseline - bending over double with his hands on his knees - illustrated the effort he had expended in defeat. After taking the acclaim of a rapturous Centre Court crowd, Djokovic climbed up to his support team to celebrate before finding a few spare seconds to have a selfie with one young fan.

Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei claimed her third Wimbledon doubles title with a third different partner as she and Elise Mertens hung on to claim victory in a marathon final against Russian duo Veronika Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina on Saturday. The Taiwanese-Belgian duo saved match points on the way to claiming a 3-6 7-5
9-7 win on Centre Court. It was the second successive Wimbledon doubles crown for Hsieh who joined forces with recently-retired Barbora Strycova to win the title in 2019. She also won the title in 2013 with Peng Shuai. This time it was Mertens, the newly-installed No.1 ranked women’s doubles player.
Top seeds Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic became the first all-Croatian pair to capture a Grand Slam men’s doubles title when they outclassed Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 6-4 7-6(5) 2-6 7-5 at Wimbledon on Saturday. On their 2nd championship point, Mektic and Pavic made 3 unsuccessful attempts to smash the ball away for a winner before a running forehand long from the SpanishArgentine duo handed the Croatians victory on a floodlit Centre Court. 20 years after Goran Ivanisevic hoisted the Challenge Cup at All England Club after winning men’s title in a rain-delayed final, his compatriots claimed the doubles trophy at the grasscourt major.
