All NPGs should come together for solution: Niki
Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, APR 9 (NPN): Amidst clamour for securing solution to the Naga political issue spanning over several decades that has gained momentum following clear signals from Delhi that the government of India is serious about concluding an agreement, NSCN/GPRNK president ‘gen.’ (retd) Niki Sumi on Saturday categorically asserted that solution is possible if all Naga Political Groups (NPGs) could come together with a “common draft” for all Nagas. Niki said this at an exclusive interview to Nagaland Post at his residence here Saturday. Niki said early solution depended on whether it would be based on Framework Agreement or Agreed Position. He reiterated that the desired solution could be possible if all three entitiesNSCN (I-M), WC, NNPGs including his group- come together and come up with a common draft for solution that would be inclusive.

Legislators to meet Shah, others in Delhi

KOHIMA, APR 9 (NPN): Parliamentary Core Committee on Naga Political Issue (PCCoNPI) delegation led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio will be leaving for Delhi by Monday to meet Union Home minister Amit Shah and other Central leaders to apprise them of the Naga political issue. The decision was made during the committee meeting held here at the CM’s residential complex, PCCoNPI member secretary and planning and parliamentary affairs minister Neiba Kronu informed media persons after the meeting. He said the delegation led by Rio including UDA chairman TR Zeliang and deputy CM Y. Patton – who is already in Delhi, would be meeting Amit Shah and other leaders in national capital. Kronu said that the members also deliberated about the recent meetings held with the Working Committee of the NNPGs and the NSCN (I-M). He also said that the members, ahead of their meeting with the Central leaders, deliberated on issues to be discussed with them (Central leaders). Kronu said that the committee was likely to have more of sittings with the WC, NNPGs and the NSCN (I-M).

Niki said if all the entities were “really fighting for the betterment of Nagas” then they should come together with a common draft to usher the required solution for Nagas, be it small or big. He also asserted that unless Nagas’ voice out their desire for all entities to come together, the government of India was unlikely to take steps in this regard. He also opined that if some sections do not accept solution there was likely to be a return to uncertainty and conflict as happened when Nagaland was created as a state or the signing of the Shillong Accord. Niki also said Naga tribal leaders were ignoring certain aspects of unifying all sections. He said, instead of trying to unify Framework Agreement and Agreed Position, the leaders neglected the agreements half way, without taking into consideration the opinions, demands and favour of general Nagas. Asked if he felt the

government of India was sincere, Niki said he did not wish to comment on it as his group was focussed on finalising the “cease fire mechanism” signed with the government of India on September 8,2021. He said sincerity of government of India would only be known after the finalizing the cease fire mechanism. When asked if his group was also involved in negotiation with the government of India, Niki reiterated that this will come up only after completion of the cease fire mechanism. It may be recalled that the Government of India
and NSCN (K) led by Niki Sumi signed a ceasefire agreement on September 8, 2021 for a period of one year. Among other clauses, the agreement stated that during the course of ceasefire, all weapons and ammunition of armed cadres of NSCN (K) Niki, except those permitted for camp security and those in possession of the special ceasefire ID card will be kept under the joint supervision of chairman CFSB and NSCN(K) Nikki. The agreement further stated that during the ceasefire period, the group will keep its cadres confined to the designated camps. The modalities of monitoring and locating the camps would be the same as being presently followed and shall be strictly adhered to. Further speaking on the charter of demands by his group, Niki said he met Government of India’s representative for Naga talks AK Mishra last October, whereby the latter informed him to submit the group’s
Charter of Demand (CoD) at the earliest. He noted that NSCN (K)’s CoD was ready, asserting that the interest of peoples demands which were not included either in Framework Agreement or Agreed Position, would be added in his demands. When asked on his views on Naga nationalism in general, Niki said that during the initial stage, Naga movement began in Naga inhabited areas. Citing the example of Nagas in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, and even including Nagas in Myanmar, who he said, were treated as second class citizens, Niki said Naga Political issue is for the benefit of Nagas in all areas and this should not be ignored. He also said even if sovereignty could not be achieved for Nagas in Myanmar due to international border, Niki claimed that “We should not leave them behind. Naga nationalism should be for Nagas of all areas”. (Cont’d on p-8)

Hindi row: TN police on high alert over possible violence CHENNAI, APR 9 (IANS): Tamil Nadu police have been put on high alert following intelligence inputs of a possible violence in the state over Union Minister Amit Shah’s statement regarding Hindi to be made the communicative medium. Political leaders, including chief minister M.K. Stalin and Congress state president M.K. Alagiri, had come out against Shah’s statement. Security has been beefed up in several pockets of the state where the possibilities of eruption of violence are on the high. The preventive measure, according to a senior intelligence officer with the state police, comes after Dalit outfit Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) based on the ideals of Tamil social reformer EV Ramaswami Periyar, called for protests across the state against the minister’s statement. Founder leader of VCK
and Member of Parliament, Thol Thirumavalavan while speaking to IANS said: “The statement of Union Home Minister Amit Shah is part of the fascist designs of the BJP and the people of Tamil Nadu will reject and defeat the imposition of Hindi language in the state.” He said that the party would conduct protest marches across the state against this highly provocative statement from the Union Home minister. Thol said that the party executive committee has chalked out the protest programmes against the statement of the Union Home minister. Thol said: “Amit Shah and the BJP do not know the history of Tamil Nadu and the protests that had emanated in the state against imposing Hindi language. The imposition of a link language would create a wedge and divide the people of the country and BJP should refrain from doing this.” He, however, did not elaborate
on the protest march plans and the date of conducting the marches. Sources in the state intelligence told IANS that the state police are prepared for any spontaneous protests in certain pockets where the party is strong. Dravidar Kazhagam leader K. Veeramani also said that the organisation will conduct protest marches across Tamil Nadu against the arbitrary move of the Centre to impose Hindi on the people of Tamil Nadu. “The people of Tamil Nadu are already agitated over the Union Home minister’s statement on imposing Hindi on our people. There will be stiff resistance from Tamil Nadu and we will line up the people of Tamil Nadu against this unilateral move of the Union government and Amit Shah,” Veeramani said. He said that the protest marches will be conducted on Monday in various parts of Tamil Nadu against this move of the Union government.
Pakistan crisis: Imran Khan’s exit imminent Hindi imposition row: RPP asks govt to clarify ISLAMABAD, APR 9 (AGENCIES): Ending a 13hour impasse, the no-trust vote against Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was underway after the National Assembly re-assembled post-midnight. According to reports in Pakistan media, Imran khan has left his official residence amid the no-trust vote. Pakistan National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser and Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri resigned on Saturday night minutes after the crucial session of the house resumed for after a break of over three hours. The crucial session of the house began at 10:30 am (11:00 IST) with Speaker
Imran Khan (File)
Qaiser, a senior member of Imran Khan’s party, in chair. Since then, the session was adjourned thrice for one reason or another. After announcing resignation, he asked Ayaz Sadiq of PML-N to chair the proceedings, who is now conducting the proceedings. Earlier, Pakistan Prime
Minister Imran Khan held an emergency meeting of his Cabinet on Saturday night as he vowed not to resign and “fight till the last ball”, even though his government is expected to lose a no-confidence motion in the National Assembly. Khan chaired the emergency Cabinet meeting where it was decided that he should not resign, sources said. The emergency Cabinet meeting has taken many by surprise as Khan has little chance of surviving the no confidence motion against him. Later, Khan met with a group of his favourite journalists, who are known for defending him in the talkshows, and rejected rumours
about making any change in the army leadership. The cricketer-turned-politician also announced that he will not resign and “fight till the last ball”. He said that he was not interfering in the process of implementation of the orders of the Supreme Court to hold a no-confidence vote. The joint Opposition needed 172 members in the 342-member house to oust Prime Minister Khan. They have garnered the support of more than the needed strength with the help of some allies of the ruling coalition and rebels from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf (PTI) party.
DIMAPUR, APR 9 (NPN): Describing the statement of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah that all the eight North East states have agreed to make Hindi compulsory up to class X, as “a very serious issue” Rising People’s party (RPP) Saturday has demanded that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) clarify on the issue. RPP in a statement affirmed it will oppose such policies “tooth and nail” and demanded that the CM, deputy CM, state BJP president and advisor school education immediately clarify. RPP also asserted that it stood for unity in diversity and that any attempt to impose Hindi in the state/
country was “crass chauvinism and majoritarianism at play”. Further, RPP pointed out that the state educational policy was under the prerogative of the state governments and any diktats by the central government on the issue, was violative of the federal structure of the country and thus unacceptable. It also claimed that there was “a lingering suspicion” that state politicians “may have given their personal assurance/s” to the union home minister for making Hindi compulsory up to class X. RPP said any personal nod given by the state politicians may cannot be ruled out. RPP based this to a decision made two years
back by the state government on banning sale of dog meat on the ‘advisory note’ of a central leader seated in Delhi, having no respect for our Naga sentiments or culture. RPP said that the state politicians, eager to please Delhi, was “not only utterly disgusting but shameless too.” It said, unlike the South Indian politicians, who fiercely guard their regional and linguistic identity, “Nagaland being helmed by spineless leaders, and of late rank sycophants, it’s absolutely possible that UHM Amit Shah indeed extracted the nod from our politicians to go ahead with his controversial statement.”
NSSB issue: ENSF to proceed No reason to panic, INSACOG keeping Voters to decide if freebies offered with ‘further course of action’ watch on XE Covid variant cases: Sources by political party are viable, says EC
DIMAPUR, APR 9 (NPN): Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF), which held a crucial meeting with its seven federating units, Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation, Eastern Nagaland Women Organization, ENSF advisors, legal advisors and Eastern intellectuals, in Kohima on April 8, has unanimously resolved to proceed with “further course of action”. The meeting was held after the federation received a “stone cold response” from Personnel & Administrative Reforms (P&AR) department in response to
its 30-day ultimatum on the state government to fulfil its charter of demands, which included inclusion of exempted departments and posts under Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) Regulation, 2020. In a press release, ENSF president Chingmak Chang and general secretary Khomo P stated that the house, after threadbare discussion on the present content of NSSB Regulation, unanimously resolved to proceed with “further course of action until such exempted departments and posts are incorporated.”

We will have to wait to know whether it is different or not,” sources told ANI. “We are in touch with the Governments of Maharashtra and Gujarat. NEW DELHI, APR 9 (PTI): Election Commission has told the Supreme Court that offering or distribution of any freebies either before or after an election is a policy decision of the party concerned and whether such policies are financially viable or have adverse effect, has to be decided by the voters of that state. In its affidavit, EC said, “The Election Commission of India cannot regulate state policies and decisions which may be taken by the winning party when they form the government. Such an action, without enabling
provisions in the law, would be an overreach of powers.” The poll panel said, “... It is also stated that offering/distribution of any freebies either before or after the election is a policy decision of the party concerned and whether such policies are financially viable or its adverse effect on the economic health of the State is a question that has to be considered and decided by the voters of the state.” It said that in December 2016, a set of 47 proposals on electoral reforms has been sent to the Centre in respect (Cont’d on p-8)
Pro tem team to restructure LBCA

Residents and shopkeepers of the colony listening to an open-air talk on clean environment. (NP)
Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, APR 9 (NPN): With an aim to encourage community participation in maintenance of hygiene at their vicinity for a cleaner environment, an open air programme on cleanliness awareness was held at Zakiesatuo colony, here on Saturday. Speaking at the programme, chief manager of Waste Management, Amos Ezung said although certain measures have been taken up to keep the city

of the Central government” and any decision to make Hindi mandatory will place people from states like in the North East in a disadvantageous position vis-à-vis those whose mother tongue is Hindi in terms of education or job prospects. Traffic on NH-102 in Manipur resumes after three days
Correspondent
IMPHAL, APR 9: Normal traffic on Imphal-Moreh section of NH-102 in Manipur resumed on Saturday as agitating villagers held talks with officials of the Manipur government. Normal traffic on the highway remained disturbed in the last three days due to blockade imposed by the agitating villagers. Villagers of Sora and its adjoining villages were agitating against the state government’s fresh attempt to demarcate the lands acquired for construction of the permanent campus of the National Sport University at Yaithibi Loukol. The latest attempt of the government was at a time while villagers, particularly land owners were pressing the government to return their lands after the campus of the National Sport University was shifted to Imphal West district. Even as the site for the university shifted, the state government was planning to set up a mega food park on the land earlier acquired by the government. The villagers reignited their agitation when concerned officials of the state government backed by a large contingent of armed police personnel tried to conduct a land survey for demarcation of the lands that had been acquired by the government on Thursday morning. In the clash that broke, at least three police per-
sonnel including the additional SP of Kakching district and four villagers were wounded. Alleging the state government of attempting to conduct the survey using security forces without addressing their demands, villagers imposed a total blockade on the NH-102 since Thursday afternoon. On day two of the blockade, agitating villagers also set afire a police booth and a motorcycle suspected to belong to the police on Friday. The police had to resorted to firing tear gas shells and mock bombs to open the highway for normal traffic. However, the villagers opened the highway today in the afternoon after an understanding was reached in a talk with the concerned government officials. The villagers have however warned to resume the blockade from tomorrow at 6 pm if the state government continues land survey and demarcation without the consent of the villagers. The lands at the Yaithibi Loukol were acquired by the state government for development of the permanent campus of the National Sports University. After the site for National Sports University was shifted to Imphal West district, villagers, particularly land owners, have been pressing the state government to return their lands and have raised strong objections to the setting up of a mega food park in the acquired land.
“Education is a state subject. The Centre has no business interfering in it. It goes against our federal spirit... We condemn it and want the decision to be withdrawn. Our Constitution does not allow favouring of one region or language at the expense of another,” he said. Saikia pointed out that the Central Education Advisory Board had in 2019 favoured a tri-language formula and assured that the Centre will not impose any language on any state. Hindi was not made mandatory even in the New Education Policy following objection from different states, he added.
Tripura CM criticizes communists
Biplab Kumar Deb
AG A RTA L A , A P R 9 (PTI): Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb Saturday termed Leftists as “political traders” and said they have very little knowledge of organisation though they ruled the north eastern state for 35 years. Speaking at a programme here, Deb said that Communists choose politics as a profession and claimed that the erstwhile Left Front government in the state had surpassed the atrocities of the British rule as they used to exploit the people. “If the Communists had organizational knowledge or skill, the Left Front would not have been dethroned by BJP. They have literally surrendered to BJP’s organizational strategy of appointing booth-wise ‘pristha pramukhs’ at the grass root level to look after the voters,” he said. The LF had been in power in Tripura from 1978 to 1988 and again from 1998 to 2018, when it was defeated by the saffron party. The next Assembly poll in the state is due in March 2023.
Referring to Assam, where many languages are spoken, Saikia said students will now have to learn Assamese, Hindi and their mother tongue under the trilanguage formula and will be deprived of the chance to learn English. “The lack of knowledge of English will make them face problems later in education and their career,” he claimed. Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi too condemned the Centre’s move. “It is a reflection of the Centre’s dictatorial attitude. It is a step towards cultural imperialism through language ... We respect Hindi, but we have our own mother tongues and we have to concentrate on their development also,” he said in a statement. The AJP chief also said the state governments should decide which languages are to be taught in schools under it. He also urged the chief ministers of the North East states, civil society organisations and general people to pressurize the Centre against this move.

The Zonal meeting in Guwahati is the third in the series. The first such meeting was held in Chandigarh on April 2 and the second in Bengaluru on April 4, 2022. To achieve this objective, Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently approved three important Umbrella Schemes of the Ministry to be implemented in mission mode, viz., Mission Poshan 2.0, Mission Shakti and Mission Vatsalya. These 3 Missions will be implemented during the 15th
Finance Commission period,2021-22 to 2025-26. The Schemes under the Umbrella Missions are Centrally Sponsored Schemes that are implemented by the State Governments/UT Administrations on cost-sharing basis as per cost sharing norms. BJP using electoral victory as license to loot nation: Khurshid
Salman Khurshid
G U WA H AT I , A P R 9 (PTI): Former Union minister Salman Khurshid on Saturday came down heavily on the Narendra Modi-led central government over the price rise of essential commodities, claiming that the party was using its “electoral victory as a license to loot the nation and its people”. Addressing a press meet here as part of his party’s nationwide campaign against price rise, the senior Congress leader alleged that the Centre was not taking any step to check the spiralling rates. The government gives “price rise in petrol and diesel as gift” to people every morning, he quipped. Prices of petrol and diesel have gone up by Rs 10 per litre across India in 16 days. The veteran leader also stated that “There has been a 531 per cent excise duty
hike on diesel and 203 per cent on petrol since the BJPled NDA assumed power in 2014.” “The Modi government has accrued Rs 26 lakh crore in eight years by increasing excise duty on petrol and diesel alone,” he claimed. The increase in the price of cooking gas and hike in toll tax on national highways were burning a hole in people’s pockets, he maintained. “The Modi government has not spared patients too. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has announced a hike of 10.76 per cent in prices of around 800 essential drugs from April 1,” he pointed out. Khurshid also noted that housing prices and construction costs have gone up, while additional tax deduction on home loan for first-time buyers has been abolished. “There is no sphere where prices have not increased. The Modi government remains responsible for this theft. The party has used its electoral victory as a license to loot the nation and its people,” the senior Congress leader added.

MUMBAI, APRIL 9 (IANS): In a direct charge, Maharashtra’s ruling Shiv Sena on Saturday accused opposition Bharatiya Janata Party of masterminding the conspiracy of the attack on Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar’s home on Friday evening, while a Minister said it was a sinister plan to cause physical harm to the senior leader and his family, and Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari condemned the incident. Housing Minister Dr Jitendra Awhad made a startling claim that the whole purpose of the assault was to cause “bodily harm” to Pawar, his wife and other family members present at that time in their Silver Oaks bungalow. “Fortunately, with the blessings of millions of people of the state, nothing untoward happened to Pawar Saheb or his family members,” he added. and shoes? BJP leaders like Anil Bonde and others are misguiding the employees which is very regrettable,” he said. Talking to the media after meeting Pawar, Sena MP and chief spokesperson Sanjay Raut said that the transport workers’ stir on Friday was not an agitation,
but “a brutal, pre-planned attack” on the NCP leader’s residence at Silver Oaks bungalow in south Mumbai. “It is regretful that the Opposition (BJP) is supporting such acts... They are stooping to the lowest level of politics to target the MVA government and create a law-and-order situation in
the state,” he said. Training guns on the leader and lawyer of the agitating Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) staffers, Gunratan Sadavarte, Raut demanded to know the people “behind” him, at whose house he lives, and who is supporting him financially. Even when scores of MSRTC employees rushed to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), they all had platform tickets and Raut asked how they could all buy the entry tickets simultaneously and who had provided the money for it. Raut alleged that Sadavarte has been “propped up” by the BJP under the garb of a labour agitation with the sinister aims of toppling the MVA government but they would not succeed. Meanwhile, Sadavarte and around 100-plus who were arrested late last night in connection with the attacks, will be produced before a Mumbai Magistrate Court.
South leaders oppose Shah’s ‘Hindi as alternative to English’ remark
C H E N NA I / H Y D E R ABAD/KANNUR, APR 9 (PTI): Opposing voices from prominent southern political parties, including BJP ally AIADMK, continued on Saturday against Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on Hindi, with former Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam insisting the language cannot be foisted. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the move to impose Hindi cannot be accepted, while senior Telangana Minister K T Rama Rao said “language chauvinism and hegemony” in the country will boomerang, responding to Shah’s comments that Hindi can be an alternative to English. Addressing a seminar on Centre-State relations, organised by the CPI(M) as part of its 23rd Party Congress, also attended by his Tamil Nadu counterpart M K Stalin, Vijayan said India is a country known for its unity in diversity and the Sangh Parivar’s agenda was not to recognise this
diversity. “India is a country which is known for its unity in diversity. The idea itself means accepting diversity. Our Constitution has also given importance to many languages in India. Most of the states were formed on the basis of language after a long struggle. The Sangh Parivar agenda is not to recognise diversity and federalism of our country. It’s part of their agenda to weaken the regional languages,” Vijayan said. He said languages are the basis of culture and life of each society and this diversity will be destroyed if a language is killed. Panneerselvam, coordinator of main opposition AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, said people may learn Hindi on their own volition but imposition of the language is unacceptable. Quoting Dravidian icon, the late C N Annadurai, he said if needed, people willing to learn Hindi may do so voluntarily. However, foisting Hindi on people is
never acceptable, the former CM tweeted. He said his party stood firm on the twolanguage policy of Tamil and English in keeping with the ideology of Annadurai. “#StopHindiImposition,” Panneerselvam tweeted. Rama Rao, President of the ruling TRS and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s son, said it would be a “great disservice to impose Hindi” on the nation’s youngsters who have global aspirations. “Unity in diversity is our strength dear @AmitShahJi. India is a union of states & a true ‘Vasudhaika Kutumbam’. Why don’t we let people of our great nation decide what to eat, what to wear, who to pray to and what language to speak!,” Rao tweeted with the hashtag #stopHindiImposition. “Language chauvinism/hegemony will boomerang,” he added. “To impose Hindi & diss English will be a great disservice to the youngsters of this nation who have global aspirations,” said Rama Rao.
BJP scared, inducting Modi has changed ‘culture of politics’ with his work: Nadda Rajnath embarks on US visit ‘tainted’ leaders in HP: AAP
NEW DELHI, APR 9 (PTI): The BJP has resorted to bring “tainted” leaders into its fold fearing the AAP’s expansion in Himachal Pradesh, the Arvind Kejriwal-led party said on Saturday, after three of its members, including its state chief, defected. AAP Himachal Pradesh president Anup Kesari, general secretary (organisation) Satish Thakur and Una district chief Iqbal Singh joined the BJP in the presence of its president JP Nadda, and Union Minister and Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur here. However, AAP said it was anyways going to sack them. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said in a tweet that the party was set to sack one of these
three leaders following an allegation of his indecent behaviour with women. “It’s the BJP top leadership’s great fear of Kejriwal ji. BJP president Nadda and new chief ministerial face Anurag Thakur rushed to HP (Himachal Pradesh) and inducted an AAP official (into their party) at 12 o’clock in the night. The AAP was going to remove him today on the allegation of his dirty acts against women,” Sisodia in a tweet in Hindi. Replying to Sisodia’s tweet, Kejriwal, who is the chief minister of Delhi, said the BJP is not afraid of him but of the people of the state, and asserted that the defection of “tainted” functionaries of his party would not affect the AAP’s poll prospects in the hill state.
SHIMLA, APR 9 (PTI): BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nadda on Saturday credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with changing the ‘culture of politics’ by being proactive at implementing various social service initiatives. Nadda was here to address a public meeting as part of his three-day visit to his home state Himachal Pradesh. He also participated in a road show from the state assembly to Peterhoff on the first day of his visit on Saturday. He said be it 185 crore double dose vaccination, surgical or air strikes in Pakistan, or safe evacuation of 23,000 Indians from war-torn Ukraine, the Modi government worked with determination in every field. Nadda, who is also a Rajya Sabha member, claimed the BJP governments had tried to ‘give’ to

the hill state, while the previous Congress governments always looked at ‘snatching’ from the state. Elaborating further, he said the then Manmohan Singh government had with-
drawn the special category of Himachal Pradesh, forcing the state to pay 40 per cent share and the Centre 60 per cent for carrying out development work in the state. When Modi became
the prime minister in 2014, he restored the state’s status, paving way for only 10 per cent contribution from the state and 90 per cent from the Centre for various development work, Nadda added. “Whatever we said, we did. Whatever we will say, we will do (Jo kaha tha kiya hai, Jo kahenge vo karenge),” he asserted. The BJP chief said the party had gone to the electors in the states, where assembly polls were held recently, with its report card, and the people re-elected the party in four states, adding that the trend will continue in the hill state as well where elections are scheduled later this year. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and Union minister Anurag Thakur also underlined the good work done by the BJP dispensation at the Centre and the state.
Rajnath Singh
NEW DELHI, APR 9 (PTI): As he embarks on a six-day visit to the US, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said he was looking forward to “fruitful” interactions during the trip. Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar are travelling to the US to hold the fourth edition of the ‘2+2’ dialogue with US Defence Secretary Llyod Austin and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on April 11 in Washington. The defence minister
said he would also be visiting the headquarters of the US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) in Hawai. “I would be leaving New Delhi tonight for a visit to the United States from April 10 to April 15. I look forward to attend the Fourth India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in Washington DC. Also, I shall be visiting INDOPACOM headquarters in Hawai, during this visit,” Singh tweeted. The INDOPACOM is the oldest and largest combatant command of the US that is responsible for American military activities in the Indo-Pacific. “The visit to the United States will give me an opportunity to hold talks with @SecDef and @SecBlinken alongside @DrSJaishankar on ways to deepen the India-US strategic partnership. Looking forward to fruitful interactions during the visit,” Singh said.
Need to recognise unsung heroes, their BJP leadership asks K’taka unit to highlight development agenda sacrifice and contribution: V-P Naidu NEW DELHI, APR 9 (PTI): Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday pitched for recognising the unsung heroes of the country, saying art forms such as cinema and music should be used to highlight their sacrifices. He lamented that people know about Robert Clive, but little was known about freedom fighters and historical figures such as Maharana Pratap, Chhatrapati Shivaji, Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitaram Raju. Speaking at the Sangeet Natak Akademi and Lalit Kala Akademi awards ceremony here, the Vice President also emphasised that due importance should
Twitter handle of UP CM’s office hacked
L U C K N OW, A P R 9 (PTI): The official Twitter handle of the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office was hacked briefly in the early hours of Saturday, a senior officer said, asserting that strictest action will be taken against those responsible. A case was registered in this connection at the Cyber Crime police station in Lucknow. “The account was hacked for around 29 minutes at night. The hackers posted around 400-500 tweets, and the account was suspended on grounds of unnatural activity,” the senior official told PTI. The Twitter handle @ CMOfficeUP has over 40 lakh followers.

be given to mother tongues at all levels, be it at government functions, in teaching or in courts. Many unsung heroes made sacrifices but their stories remain largely unknown to the masses as they did not get enough attention in history books, Naidu said. “Recognising the un-
recognised is our duty. Our cinema, other art forms, music and literature should pay enough attention to this aspect. It is very much important to rejuvenate our great cultural past and the sacrifices made,” he said. “We were told about the history of Robert Clive but not about Rana Pratap, Shivaji, Alluri Sitaram Raju, Komaram Bheem etc. It is time that we correct this fault and restore the honour of our glorious past. “It is time to recognise them and I am happy that the new education policy is focusing in that direction,” he added, calling for correcting such “distortions”, Naidu said
BENGALURU, APR 9 (PTI): Amid the recent communal issues in Karnataka, the BJP central leadership has asked leaders of its state unit and ministers to bring the development agenda to the fore and showcase the achievements of the government, in the wake of assembly polls next year. Several ministers are holding press conferences at the party office to list out their achievements. Holding one such press meet on Saturday, senior minister K S Eshwarappa, who is in-charge of Rural Development & Panchayat Raj (RDPR) department, accepted that it is being done as per the directions of the party leadership.
“Yes... (there is a direction from the high command),” he said in response to a question on ministers presenting their progress report to people through the media. Speaking to reporters here, he said, “When I go to my village or constituency, I have to tell people what was promised and what was delivered. Similarly, we are telling the people about our achievements, and asking them to give us their votes.” Accusing the opposition of trying to create a rift between Hindus and Muslims and only trying to create a propaganda out of it, the minister said, “Even AlQaeda got involved now...” in reference to the video
K S Eshwarappa
in which the terror group chief Ayman Al-Zawahiri praised a Karnataka college student for confronting a group of students opposing hijab in her college. He said the BJP is now using the media to showcase the government’s achievements known to the people of the state. Asked, amid commu-
nal issues, whether the focus has shifted to development after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state in the run-up to 2023 assembly polls, Eshwarappa said, “I have openly accepted...we are purposely placing development works before the people as elections are coming.” On the Congress accusing the BJP government of bringing out communal issues, as the ruling party has nothing to speak about development, he said, “Take down, we are listing out (our achievements). We are placing it department wise... we are not ‘mouni babas’ to keep quiet. When Congress raises communal issues like hijab, we will
respond to them.” Shah, who was recently in the city, had set a target of winning 150 seats to Karnataka BJP leaders for the 2023 assembly elections in the state, where BJP is eyeing a successive term. The state has been witnessing a series of communal issues from hijab issue to a call for banning loudspeakers at mosques for the last couple of months. Amid such developments in the state, the central leadership has asked Karnataka leaders and ministers to also showcase developmental works and achievements, while responding to opposition’s allegations on communal issues, a senior BJP functionary said.
Had offered CM’s post to Mayawati : Rahul Gandhi MP Cong burns effigies of Amitabh, Akshay;
NEW DELHI, APR 9 (PTI): Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said the Congress had offered to form an alliance with BSP chief Mayawati in the recent Uttar Pradesh assembly election and make her the chief ministerial candidate but “she did not even talk to us”. Lashing out at the BSP supremo, the former Congress president alleged that Mayawati gave a clear passage to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state because of “the CBI, the ED and Pegasus”. The Congress won only two seats out of 403 and got a vote share of less than 2.5 percent in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP retained power. As many as 97 percent of Congress candidates lost their security deposit. The BSP won just one
Rahul Gandhi
seat and a vote share of around 13 per cent. Nearly 72 per cent of its candidates also lost their deposit in the election, which turned out to be a bipolar contest between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party. Releasing a book, “The Dalit Truth”, Rahul Gandhi said the Constitution is a weapon but it is meaningless without institutions which, he alleged, have been ‘’captured by the RSS’’.
Noting that if institutions are not controlled by people, neither is the country, the Congress leader said, “This is not a new assault. It started the day when Mahatma Gandhi was killed with bullets.” Gandhi said he would not have been able to speak up against the government had he taken any money and alleged that the CBI and the ED control the political system. Taking on Mayawati, he said, “We gave a message to Mayawati to form an alliance and asked her to become the chief minister. She did not even talk to us.” Gandhi said he has respect for BSP patriarch Kanshi Ram for articulating the Dalit voice of Uttar Pradesh, even though the Congress had suffered during that phase. “But Mayawatiji is say-
ing that I will not fight for it .. she gave a clear passage to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Why? (because of ) CBI, the ED and Pegasus”. The former Congress chief said people need to speak up or else institutions will continue to be controlled and the Constitution will not be followed. “This is the reality of India. And when the Constitution becomes defunct, the weak are the worst affected -- Dalits, minorities, tribals, unemployed, small farmers and the poor,” he said. He exhorted Dalits to fight for their rights by treading the path shown by B R Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. He said Ambedkar and Gandhi had shown that “there is a path, but you need to tread on it. There is a way, but you need to tread that path”.
attacks actors for being selective in price rise
BHOPAL, APR 9 (PTI): The Madhya Pradesh Congress burnt the effigies of film actors Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar for allegedly being selective in their criticism of fuel price hikes and inflation, with the party highlighting some of their tweets when the UPA was in power. The ruling BJP, meanwhile, called the Congress’ move to burn effigies of the two actors on Friday as an act of frustration. “In 2012, these actors used to tweet against fuel price hikes and inflation by writing that vehicles can be purchased but one would need loans to buy petrol, diesel. At that time, an LPG cylinder used to cost Rs 300400, while petrol and diesel was around Rs 60 per litre,” Congress MLA PC Sharma,
Congress workers burning the effigies of Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar.
who organised this protest, told PTI on Saturday. These actors are now silent under the BJP dispensation despite LPG cylinders costing over Rs 1,000 and petrol-diesel retailing in the Rs 100-120 range, Sharma said. “They have no con-
cern for the common man,” the Congress leader alleged. Hitting back, MP Medical Education Vishwas Sarang called the move unfortunate and said the Congress used to praise Bachchan when he was a Lok Sabha MP from that party.

Russia gets UN boot
n a big blow to Russia, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on April 7, voted to suspend Moscow from the world organisation’s leading human rights body, the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), over allegations that its soldiers in Ukraine engaged in rights violations. In the 193-member UNGA, 93 nations voted in favour of the resolution, while 24 were against it. Russia, China, Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Syria, Vietnam, were among those who voted against. Fifty-eight, including India, abstained from the process. The world watched in horror as videos and photos showed streets in the town of Bucha on the outskirts of the capital, Kyiv, strewn with the bodies of civilians after Russian soldiers retreated. The deaths have sparked global revulsion and calls for tougher sanctions on Russia, which has vehemently denied its troops were responsible. More towns that had been under Russian occupation are expected to throw up more human rights abuses. Since January this year, India has abstained on at least eight occasions on procedural votes and draft resolutions in the UN Security Council, the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council that deplored Russian aggression against Ukraine. As a point of comparison, in the first UNGA vote condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, on March 2, 141 countries voted in favor, just five voted against, and 35 abstained. The vote on Russia’s UNHRC membership, then, saw a sharp increase in outright “no” votes and a rise in abstentions as well, alongside a 34 percent drop in countries voting to support the resolution. The government of India however condemned the alleged gross human rights violation in Ukraine and supported the call for an independent investigation, as it underlined that when innocent human lives are at stake, diplomacy must prevail as the only viable option. The UNHRC is defined as an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system, which is responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. The Council also investigates allegations of breaches of human rights in United Nations member states and addresses thematic human rights issues. The Council was established by the United Nations General Assembly on March 15,2006to replace the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. As per the rules, the UNGA can suspend the rights and privileges of any Council member that it decides has persistently committed gross and systematic violations of human rights during its term of membership. To suspend a member, one needs a two-thirds majority vote by the General Assembly. Russia isn’t the only country that has been suspended from the UN Human Rights Council. In March 2011, the UN General Assembly suspended Libya from the Human Rights Council using the provisions of resolution 60/251. The move was in response to the crackdown on anti-government protests by the Muammar Gaddafi government. For Russia, its invasion of Ukraine has backfired and instead, atrocities in Ukraine have exposed Russian forces as brutes, murderers, rapists and pillagers. The thin veneer of awesomeness as a giant economic and military super power has fallen apart as Russia is economically checkmated and its soldiers acting like street thugs of rogue nation and military prowess floored by the doughty Ukrainians. The world must ensure that Putin and his circle are brought to justice and held accountable for their crimes.
DailyDevotion Have You Seen Jesus?
After that, He appeared in another form to two of them… —Mark 16:12
Being saved and seeing Jesus are not the same thing. Many people who have never seen Jesus have received and share in God’s grace. But once you have seen Him, you can never be the same. Other things will not have the appeal they did before. You should always recognize the difference between what you see Jesus to be and what He has done for you. If you see only what He has done for you, your God is not big enough. But if you have had a vision, seeing Jesus as He really is, experiences can come and go, yet you will endure “as seeing Him who is invisible” (Hebrews 11:27). The man who was blind from birth did not know who Jesus was until Christ appeared and revealed Himself to him (see John 9). Jesus appears to those for whom He has done something, but we cannot order or predict when He will come. He may appear suddenly, at any turn. Then you can exclaim, “Now I see Him!” (see John 9:25). Jesus must appear to you and to your friend individually; no one can see Jesus with your eyes. And division takes place when one has seen Him and the other has not. You cannot bring your friend to the point of seeing; God must do it. Have you seen Jesus? If so, you will want others to see Him too. “And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either” (Mark 16:13). When you see Him, you must tell, even if they don’t believe. O could I tell, you surely would believe it! O could I only say what I have seen! How should I tell or how can you receive it, How, till He bringeth you where I have been?

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, APRIL 10, 2022
F
orceful imposition of any language is against the spirit of plurality, diversity, secularity and democracy The statement of Union Home Minister, Shri. Amit Shah, during the 37th meeting of the Parliamentar y Official Language Committee in New Delhi, on 7th April that “all eight states of the Northeast region have ag reed to make Hindi compulsory subject till class 10” certainly raised some eyebrows in the region. The issue, of course, is nothing new, as several attempts have been made in the past to make Hindi a compulsory subject across India. However, the very fact that eight north-eastern states has been pinpointed out of the 28 Indian states is something serious to ponder upon. I m m e d i a t e ly a f t e r Amit Shan made his statement, there has been a series of response and objections from various states and political leaders, but so far, prominent leaders from the north east have not raised any objections. The silence is deafening, but understandable, considering

that most of the north east states are revenue deficit states. Coincidentally, all north eastern states are either ruled by the BJP or are in alliance with the BJP. Of course, there is nothing wrong in learning Hindi as a language. Rather, it is a rich and beautiful language and can benefit anyone who can read, write and speak the language. But forceful imposition of any language should be opposed as it is against the spirit of plurality, diversity, secularity and democracy. It is a fact that there is no national language in India. The Constitution of India recognised both Hindi and English as the official language. This constitutional provision has been affirmed by the Official Languages Act of 1963. According to the Census of India of 2001, India has 122 major languages and 1599 other languages. However, figures vary primarily due to differences in definition of the terms “language” and “dialect”. As per the Census of India 2011, there are a total of 121 languages and 270 mother tongues with a speaker strength of ten thousand and above.
Among these languages, Hindi is spoken by some 52-crore people out of the 125 crore Indians. That is roughly only 42 percent of the total population. This is one of the reasons why forceful imposition of Hindi will not work in India. In recent years, there has been an increasing trend of enforcing the might of the majority over the rest. Some groups openly pursue to Indianize the country thorough language and religion. The current dispensation has named almost all government schemes in H i n d i . Fo r e x a m p l e, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Swamitva Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Antyodaya Yojana, Swaach Bharat and what not. NonHindi speaking people do not even know how to pronounce them, forget about their meaning and purpose. But who cares? So long as you live in India, someone thinks you should read and speak in Hindi. This is the idea of India to some people. The north east region in India is one of the most culturally and linguistically
“Us against them”
emory has not yet lapsed when a representative addressed the august house of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in Hindi language. His maiden address in Hindi had evoked applause as well as public backlash, although the debate that ensued thereafter never reached a logical conclusion. After a short spell of stillness, the central government chose to tread on a hitherto sacred path of stealthily imposing Hindi language on the Northeasterners. After experimenting with Hijabban in Karnataka and armed with a court’s judgment in their favour, the current dispensation at the Centre ambitiously ventured into the realm of the Notheast’s most diverse and resourceful asset, its language. What is more distasteful is the apparent spineless and passive acceptance of the imposition by the toothless governments across the region. What oftentimes strikes our conscience is the recklessness of the current dispensation at the Centre who seems to derive hedonistic pleasure in stirring up controversy by stepping onto such grey areas, even when the government instead could well better spend its energy and time (and even resource) in other welfare and research projects. The trajectory projects towards an authoritarian mode of government even though they themselves are well aware that authoritarianism and dictatorship do not last long. The central government reorganized the former state of Jammu & Kashmir mainly to prevent terrorism, to complete integration and to uplift its people. However, the empirical reality of dissecting the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir projects a sheer contrast to what the Central government had primordially objectified. Community was segregated along the lines of religion, and kept the perceived advanced community checked for the rest to catch up. “There were no strikes, hardly any stone pelting, schools were running, shops were open and tourist inflow had increased. Everyone was happy. Then, in one stroke they have antagonised every Kashmiri who was with them” lamented a resident of Srinagar to a correspondent of The Indian Express for the news article ‘In silent Srinagar, the echo: Delhi wants Kashmir, not Kashmiris?’ on the scrapping of Article 370. What is common to Jammu & Kashmir and the restive India’s Northeast is the homogeneity of means and laws of the central government to keep the two regions under continued suppression, but not liberating them. Imposition of AFSPA, 1958, for instance. Hence, it remains apprehensive that the recent Reader’s note: Articles
diverse region in the whole of India. The region is inhabited by speakers of over 220 languages, out of which many languages are slipping into the endangered category. According to a recent study conducted by People’s Linguistic Survey of India, there are five tribal languages that are moving towards extinction in India. Linguist experts believe that the most threatened language is Majhi in Sikkim, with just four people who currently speak Majhi and all of them belong to the same family. The latest National Policy on Education (NEP 2020) is very clear on the three-language formula. It states “the three-language formula will continue to be implemented while keeping in mind the Constitutional provisions, aspirations of the people, regions, and the Union, and the need to promote multilingualism as well as promote national unity. However, there will be a greater flexibility in the three-language formula, and no language will be imposed on any State. The three languages learned by children will be the choices of States, regions,
and of course the students themselves, so long as at least two of the three languages are native to India.” This clearly implies that Hindi or any other Indian language do not have to be compulsory. It’s up to the states or the students to decide any language combination that they feel is ideal for them. The challenge for the north eastern states is to preserve and promote their language, culture and identity in this age of ethnocentrism, monoculturalism and globalisation. Proponents of ethnocentrism and monoculturalism believes in the process of assimilation whereby other minority ethnic groups are expected to adopt the culture and practices of the dominant ethnic group. Such tenets are against the spirit of Indian democracy which believes in the spirit of ‘unity in diversity’ and in multiculturalism. On the contrary, this is the time to promote multilingualism and multiculturalism which seeks the inclusion of the views and contributions of diverse members of society and, at the same
time, withholding the idea for their assimilation into the dominant culture. The NEP asserts that “children learn and grasp nontrivial concepts more quickly in their home language/ mother tongue. Wherever possible, the medium of instruction until at least Grade 5, but preferably till Grade 8 and beyond, will be the home language/mother tongue/ local language/regional language.” Therefore, in a state like Nagaland, which is inhabited by different tribes and ethnic communities, speaking different language, it is important to give emphasis in the development of our own languages for our own benefit, for our posterity and to save our language from the brink of extinction. In view of the provisions as envisaged in the NEP 2020, State should also endeavour to allocate more resources t owa r d s t r a i n i n g a n d recruiting Naga language teachers and developing text books and literatures in Naga languages. BA.2 strains of Omicron, and is considered more transmissible than other strains. The health department said in its release that frequent changes in genomic structure are part of the natural life course of viruses, and there is no need for fear but precaution should be taken. According to local authorities, the patient in Gujarat had tested positive for COVID-19 on March 12 during his visit to Vadodara. He had however returned to Mumbai the next day without informing the local authorities. He was later found infected with the XE variant as per a report given by a Gandhinagar-based lab, which was cross-checked
and confirmed by a facility in Kolkata on Friday. The man is currently in Mumbai and his health condition is stable. Maharashtra on Saturday recorded 132 new coronavirus cases and six pandemic-related deaths, bringing the cumulative infection tally to 78,75,080, while the death toll reached 1,47,816. 135 patients have recovered in the past 24 hours and the recovery rate now stands at 98.11%. There are currently 803 active cases in Maharashtra. Sindhudurg, Sangli, Nandurbar, Latur, Hingoli, Nanded, Washim, Yavatmal and Bhandara districts reported zero active cases on Saturday.
60-feet-long steel bridge stolen in Bihar’s Sasaram
Vikrant ‘scam’: BJP leader, son seek pre-arrest bail
MUMBAI, APR 9 (AGENCIES): A second COVID-19 case belonging to the XE recombinant COVID-19 strain had been detected in Mumbai. This comes mere hours after Gujarat reported its first case - a 67-year old Mumbai resident who had travelled to Vadodara last month, reports Times Now. Earlier this week officials in Mumbai had indicated the detection of India’s first XE case in a South African woman who had tested positive in early March. Central officials however have said that the case detected in the city on did not belong to the XE variant. The XE variant is a combination of BA.1 and

SASARAM, APR 9 (PTI): A 60-feet-long steel bridge was dismantled and stolen by a group of men posing as government officers in Bihar’s Sasaram district, police said on Saturday. The bridge, weighing 500 tons, was built over the Arrah canal in Amiyawar village in Nasriganj police station area in 1972, they said. A group of men, posing as officers of the Irrigation Department, dismantled the defunct bridge with the help of gas-cutters and earthmovers over three days, police said. By the time the locals realised what was happening and informed the police, they had fled with the scrap, said Subhash Kumar, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Nasriganj police station. “It appears that the whole operation was executed with the help of unwitting local officials of the
Irrigation Department,” he said. A case was registered and a hunt was on to nab those behind the incident, Kumar said. Scrap dealers in the district have been alerted about the incident, he said. “The bridge was too old and declared dangerous some time back. A new concrete bridge was constructed adjacent to the old one, and that is currently used by the locals,” said Mantu Singh, a resident of the Amiyawar village. Taking a dig at the government over the incident, Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav said the thieves were inspired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and BJP leaders. “If BJP and Nitish Kumar can steal the government of Bihar, then what is a bridge?” he said, apparently referring to Kumar’s JD(U) severing ties with the RJD to form a government with BJP in the state in 2017.
MUMBAI, APR 9 (PTI): BJP leader Kirit Somaiya and his son Neil Somaiya on Saturday filed an anticipatory bail application before a sessions court here in a case pertaining to alleged misappropriation of over Rs 57 crore collected to save the decommissioned aircraft carrier Vikrant. Earlier this week, a case was registered against them at Trombay police station in the city on the basis of a complaint lodged by a retired Army personnel. The pre-arrest bail plea of the Somaiyas, filed through their lawyer Hrishikesh Mundargi, is likely to come up for hearing on Monday. Commissioned in 1961, INS Vikrant, a Majestic-class aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy, had played a key role in enforcing naval blockade of East Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. It was decommissioned in 1997. In January 2014, the ship was sold through an online auction and scrapped in November that year. The complainant alleged that the Somaiyas had started a campaign to raise funds for saving the aircraft carrier from being scrapped and collected more than Rs 57 crore. He had donated some amount for this fund, the complainant said.
Make progressive films benefitting society: TN CM
M K Stalin
CHENNAI, APR 9 (PTI): Considering that many youngsters are influenced by watching movies, film makers should make films that are progressive in nature and benefit the society, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said on Saturday. The film industry should not only provide entertainment but also raise the bar and qualify themselves by promoting ‘food for thought’ among the people, Stalin said after inaugurating the Dakshin South Media and Entertainment Summit -- organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here. “Movies should be identified based on their quality content. The conduct of film festivals enhances the entertainment industry as an art and encourages business promotion. By holding awards ceremonies, film personalities are honoured and skilled people are respected,” he said. Appealing to the people gathered to consider him as one among them, the chief minister said his association with the film industry
CJI Ramana advocates alternative dispute resolution
KEVADIA (GUJ), APR 9 (PTI): The concept of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) has the potential to transform the Indian legal landscape by providing a platform for millions of people to settle their grievances, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana said here on Saturday. With adequate cooperation from all stakeholders, ADR can emerge as a tool of social justice in India, he said. Speaking at the inaugural event of a two-day national conference on mediation and information technology organised near the Statue of Unity here, the CJI asked courts to take an active effort to make negotiation and mediation mandatory as part of case management. He also said those engaged in the justice delivery mechanism need to have a thorough understanding of new technologies, which have the potential to sim-

plify the process. “The concept of ADR, through Lok Adalats, Gram Nyayalayas, mediation and arbitration centres, has the potential to transform the legal landscape of India by providing millions of people a platform to settle their grievances,” the CJI said. It can reduce pendency, save judicial resources and time, and allow litigants “a degree of control over the dispute resolution process and its outcome”, he said, adding that it is “one of the most empowering methods of resolving disputes as they maximise the participation of stakeholders”.
Justice Ramana also said that while conflicts are inevitable aspects of our lives, they can be resolved through understanding. “Conflicts have a human face. One must have the foresight to look beyond the conflict. A dispute should not spoil your relationship. Prolonged litigation can drain resources and cause animosity, and conflicts can be resolved in a neutral environment, where both parties are in a win-win situation. After all, life is a balancing act,” the CJI said. Justice Ramana asked the courts to take an active effort to make negotiation and mediation mandatory as a part of case management and said lawyers must try their best for pre-litigation settlement and advise clients to approach Lok Adalats for the greater benefit of parties. He asked the parties to not use dispute resolution forums as a mere delaying tactic.
Further, judicial officers must understand the parties and their economic conditions without bringing any adjudicatory flavour to the proceedings, he said. The Chief Justice of India also underlined the need for skilled mediators to decide on issues like whether the settlement being reached is patently unjust to the weaker party, and whether he should be a silent spectator during such negotiations. “The ideals of substantive equality must be reflected in the resolution process as well...With adequate cooperation from all stakeholders, it has the ability to emerge as a tool of social justice in India,” Justice Ramana said. The CJI said several states were working to build a robust ADR-friendly environment, adding that new-age lawyers and law students should be equipped with the developing expertise in negotiation and mediation.
dates back to when he was one of the film producers. “Even I had acted in quite a few films by doing small roles. I have come here to take part as one among you. Even in my autobiography ‘Ungalil Oruvan’, I have mentioned that DMK and the film industry cannot be separated and in the same way my family and tinsel town cannot be separated,” he said. “This tradition has been dating back from my (late) father’s (M Karunanidhi) days and even now it continues with my son Udhayanidhi (who is an actorturned-politician),” he said. With COVID-19 pandemic easing out, all the industries are resuming operations and it is happy to note that the film industry too is bouncing back, he said. The CM also pointed out that the conduct of such an event in Chennai was ‘apt’ as the metro city holds a significant place in the Indian film industry. “Southern film industry has been a major contributor to the Indian cinema and film technicians from the city are respected across the country,” he said. Film makers should create films in such a way that the story, dialogue, direction are in sync based on the current trends, only then the film industry can continue to be a popular entertainment destination, he said.
‘All booths in Asansol to be manned by CRPF’
ASANSOL (WB), APR 9 (PTI): Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday demanded that all polling booths in Asansol Lok Sabha constituency, where bypolls will be held on April 12, be manned by CRPF personnel to ensure free and fair elections. The Lok Sabha MP alleged that an atmosphere of fear has engulfed Trinamool Congress-ruled West Bengal. “I will appeal to the EC to deploy CRPF in large numbers in Asansol,” he told reporters here. Referring to Shatrughan Sinha, whom TMC has fielded in Asansol, Prasad said, “The by-poll is being held in a unique situation wherein the man whom I had defeated in Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency, has come to contest here.” Noting that Sinha has changed three political parties, Prasad questioned whether there is any guarantee that he will remain with the TMC till 2024, when the next LS elections will be held.
Hafiz Talha Saeed
who has been declared a terrorist by the government. He was born on October 25, 1975, and is a resident of Lahore in Pakistan. Hafiz Talha Saeed is a senior leader of the LeT and is the head of the cleric wing of the terrorist organisation. Hafiz Saeed, founder of the LeT, was the brain behind the Mumbai terror attacks of November 26, 2008, in which 166 people were killed. He had been declared a terrorist under the same law a few years ago and is currently serving a jail term in Pakistan on terror charges. India has been consistently seeking Hafiz Saeed’s custody but Pakistan has refused to do so. Apart from the 26/11 attacks, the LeT has been responsible for a
series of deadly attacks in India, mostly in Jammu and Kashmir, in which scores of civilians and security personnel have been killed over the years. Hafiz Saeed and the LeT ‘operational commander’ Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi are among the most wanted terrorists in India for their involvement in numerous terrorist acts. The LeT is listed as a terrorist organisation under the First Schedule of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The UAPA has been enacted to provide for more effective prevention of certain unlawful activities of associations and individuals and for dealing with terrorist activities and for matters connected therewith.
UP Police book seer who issued ‘rape threat’
Bajrang Muni Das
SITAPUR (UP), APR 9 (PTI): An Uttar Pradesh seer, who allegedly delivered a hate speech against a community and made a rape threat, has been booked, police here said on Saturday. Bajrang Muni Das, the mahant of the Maharshi Shri Lakshman Das Udasin Ashram in Khairabad town, allegedly made the speech and threat on April 2 and the video of it surfaced on social media platforms on Thursday. “A case has been registered against Mahant Bajrang Muni Das over his hate speech in Khairabad. After collection of evidence and inquiry, police will initiate action accordingly,”
Additional Superintendent of Police Sitapur, Rajiv Dikshit, said. Das has been booked under Indian Penal Code sections related to making hate speech and derogatory statements. Hours after the case was registered against Das on Friday, a video surfaced online, in which he apologises and says his statement was presented in a “wrong way”. “My statement has been presented in a wrong way. I seek unconditional apology for the same,” he said. The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Friday sought Das’ arrest and reprimanded police saying it cannot be a mute spectator and should take appropriate measures to curb such incidents. In a two-minute video containing the hate speech, which is said to have been recorded on April 2, Das can be heard saying if any Hindu girl is teased by a man belonging to a particular community, he would himself rape a woman of that community.

The Centre on Saturday told the states that the precaution dose will be of the same COVID-19 vaccine as the one used for the administration of the first two doses and that private vaccination centres can charge up to a maximum of Rs 150 per dose as service charge over and above the cost of the vaccine. The Centre announced on Friday that the precaution dose of Covid vaccines will be available to everyone aged above 18 years at the private vaccination centres from April 10. All those above the age of 18, who have completed nine months after the administration of the second dose, will be eligible for the precaution dose. Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, who held an orientation meeting of the health secretaries of all the states and Union territories on Saturday, also informed that no fresh registration would be required for the precaution dose as all due beneficiaries are already registered on the CoWIN platform. It was emphasised that all vaccinations must mandatorily be recorded on CoWIN and both the options of “online appointment” and “walk-in” registration and vaccination will be available at the private Covid vaccination centres (CVCs). The private CVCs will maintain the vaccination sites in accordance with the guidelines issued earlier by the Union health ministry. “They can charge up to a maximum of Rs 150 per dose as service charge for vaccination over and above the cost of the vaccine,” Bhushan said. “Administration of precaution dose will be homologous -- same vaccine type will be used for precaution dose which was used for vaccination of first and second dose,” he stated. Healthcare workers (HCWs), frontline workers (FLWs) and citizens aged 60 years and above shall continue to receive the precaution dose at the vaccination centres, including free vaccination at the government vaccination centres, Bhushan underlined.
NEW DELHI, APR 9 (PTI): Hafiz Talha Saeed, a key leader of the dreaded terrorist group LeT and the son of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed, has been declared a terrorist by the government. In a notification, the Union home ministry said that Hafiz Talha Saeed, 46, has been actively involved in recruitment, fund collection, and planning and executing attacks by the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in India and Indian interests in Afghanistan. He has also been actively visiting various LeT centres across Pakistan, and during his sermons propagating for jihad against India, Israel, the United States of America and Indian interests in other western countries, it stated. The central government believes that Hafiz Talha Saeed is involved in terrorism and he should be notified as a terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, the notification said. Accordingly, he has been designated as an individual terrorist under the stringent Act. Hafiz Talha Saeed is now the 32nd individual

which suggests the scheme stands for social justice as well, the minister said. The scheme was launched by the Prime Minister on April 8, 2015. Although the pandemic has hit the pace of growth of Mudra loans, the disbursement has still remained well above the annual average of Rs 2.66 trillion until FY20. In FY21, such loan dis-
bursements stood at Rs 3.12 trillion and in FY22, these touched Rs 3.03 trillion. Given that most of the Mudra loans are collateralfree, experts have warned of growing risks of deterioration of asset quality, although they also concede that the scheme has improved access to credit of people belonging to vulnerable sections. Mudra loans are extended to three categories of borrowers — Sishu, Kishore and Tarun. Customers seeking loans up to Rs 50,000 come under the Sishu category; the Kishore category covers credit above Rs 50,000 and up to Rs 5 lakh; and the Traun category covers loan above Rs 5 lakh and up to Rs 10 lakh.

‘US afraid that ties among China, Russia & India may develop further’ BEIJING, APR 9 (IANS): The US is afraid that ties among China, Russia, and India may further develop due to the Ukraine crisis, Chinese state media has said. As White House top economic adviser Brian Deese claimed that the consequences of New Delhi’s “more explicit strategic alignment” with Moscow would be “significant and longterm”, Global Times termed this an open threat by the US toward India on the latter’s own business. “When it comes to the Ukraine crisis, the US is blatantly displaying its hegemonic mentality either you are with the US, or against the US. This echoes exactly the same slogan of George W. Bush, made in the wake of the 9/11 attacks,” said Zhao Gancheng, a research fellow at the Shanghai Institute for International Studies. The US is again telling the world: As a superpower, it has the right to define who you are. Even if India has not “aligned” with Russia, and has kept a relatively balanced position during
the Russia-Ukraine conf lict, the US does not buy it, Global Times reported. “Remaining neutral makes no sense to the US. What Washington wants from New Delhi is completely standing by the side of the US,” Zhao said, the report said. Before Deese’s r e m a r k s, t h e U S h a s already war ned India more than once against constr ucting alter nate payment mechanisms with Russia or buying more oil from Russia. Yet the threats turned out to be in vain, as India benefits from its ties with Russia, which can’t be substituted by the US, Global Times reported. Also, India’s response mirrors an increasingly obvious trend - the US has underestimated the antipathy the rest of the world holds for it. Not only India, but the majority of the general public in China and Latin American countries and other developing world have not taken sides with the US in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, even if the US believes it is standing on the moral high ground, it added.

affected ever since the demonstrations.” Sabry said he will lead a delegation of Sri Lankan officials to Washington to start talks with the IMF on April 18 and that financial and legal advisers would be selected within 21 days to help the government restructure its international debt. “Once we go to them, first thing is there is a sense of confidence in the entire international monetary community that we are serious,” he said. “We are transparent, we are willing to engage.” On Friday, a new central bank governor raised interest rates by an unprecedented 700 basis points in a bid to tame rocketing inflation and stabilise the economy. Sri Lankan authorities will also reach out to rating agencies, Sabry said, as the country looks to regain access to international financial markets after being locked out due to multiple ratings downgrades since 2020. Sabry said the government will hike taxes and fuel prices within six months and seek to reform loss-making state-owned enterprises, in an effort to fix public finances.
described the attack as a “bloody provocation” by Ukraine. In Washington, a senior defence official said the United States did not accept the Russian denial and believed Russian forces had fired a short-range ballistic missile in the attack. Reuters was unable to verify the details of attack. Honcharenko said he expected just 50,000-60,000 of Kramatorsk’s population of 220,000 population to remain within a week or two as people flee the violence. EU rallies support European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Saturday Russian forces appeared to have committed war crimes by targeting civilians in Ukraine, but she said lawyers must investigate the alleged incidents. Leaving Ukraine after a visit, von der Leyen said she had seen with her own eyes on Friday the destruction in the town of Bucha near Kyiv. A forensics team began exhuming a mass grave on Friday containing the bodies of civilians who local officials say were killed while Russians occupied the town. “My instinct says:

Shanghai hospital pays the price for China’s COVID response BEIJING, APR 9 (AP): A series of deaths at a hospital for elderly patients in Shanghai is underscoring the dangerous consequences of China’s stubborn pursuit of a zero-COVID approach amid an escalating outbreak in the city of 26 million people. Multiple patients have died at the Shanghai Donghai Elderly Care hospital, relatives of patients told The Associated Press. They say their loved ones weren’t properly cared for after caretakers who came into contact with the virus were taken away to be quarantined, in adherence to the strict pandemic regulations, depleting the hospital of staff. Family members have taken to social media to plea for help and answers and are demanding to see surveillance video from inside the facility after getting little to no information from the hospital. The conditions and deaths at the hospital are a sharp rebuke of China’s strategy of sticking to a zero-COVID policy as it deals with the outbreak in
Putin may cite Ukraine war to meddle in US politics: Intel WASHINGTON, APR 9 (AP): Russian President Vladimir Putin may use the Biden administration’s support for Ukraine as a pretext to order a new campaign to interfere in American politics, US intelligence officials have assessed. Low salt diet and heart failure: Surprising findings on life quality, hospitalization
S
hare on PinterestEating less salt may improve heart failure symptoms, a new study finds. Pargpoom Puapansawad/EyeEm/Getty Images • It is unclear what the full benefits of maintaining a low salt diet are for people with heart failure. • A new study has found that low salt diets may improve the quality of life and some symptoms in people with heart failure. • However, the research also suggests that low salt diets might not reduce hospitalizations related to cardiovascular problems. Doctors have long recommended decreased salt intake for heart failure or other cardiac problems. However, research is still ongoing about how effective low sodium intake is in reducing events of hospitalization or emergency room visits. A recent studyTrusted Source published in The Lancet found that while low sodium diets might help improve the quality of life for people with heart failure, they did not reduce clinical events like hospitalization or emergency room visits. Heart failure and low salt diet recommendations Heart failureTrusted Source is when the heart cannot effectively pump blood to meet the body’s demands. As a result, the body cannot get the nutrients and oxygen it needs. Heart failure is chronic. People with heart failure can experience a variety of symptomsTrusted Source, including the following: • Shortness of breath, persistent coughing or wheezing • Swelling because of the buildup of excess fluid • Feeling tired or fatigued • Increased heart rate, feeling heart palpitations The New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional ClassificationTrusted Source is one standard used to classify heart failure. This system places people in one of four categories based on how much their heart failure interferes with their ability to do things and their symptoms brought on by activity. Many organizations and doctors encourage people who have heart failure to reduce the amount of salt in their diets. In theory, reducing the amount of sodium Trusted Sourcehelps to prevent fluid overload in people with heart failure. Dr. Edo Paz, cardiologist and vice president of Medical at K Health, who wasn’t involved in the study, explained to Medical News Today: “We have long instructed patients with congestive heart failure to limit consumption of sodium, as sodium can lead to fluid retention, which can result in heart failure exacerbations.” Researchers in the current study found that reducing sodium intake can benefit people with heart failure. However, they found it might not help prevent hospitalizations and other adverse clinical outcomes. Their findings offer more insight into the recommendation for sodium intake for people with heart failure. High blood pressure: Sodium may not be the culprit Salt has long been vilified as the harbinger of hypertension. However, as research into the condition has delved deeper, it is becoming clear that the story is more complex. The latest study in this arena goes some way toward absolving sodium. Is salt as bad for our health as we thought? Following a raft of large-scale studies showing that a high salt intake leads to high blood pressureTrusted Source, the Dietary Guidelines for AmericansTrusted Source set the recommended sodium intake at 2,300 milligrams per day. However, a new batch of studies are bringing this guideline into question, and researchers are now asking whether the relationship between hypertension and salt is so clear cut. The latest research to probe sodium’s role in hyperK Y M C
tension is presented today at the Experimental Biology 2017 meeting, taking place in Chicago, IL. Researcher Lynn L. Moore, an associate professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine in Massachusetts, completed the study with her team. A new look at sodium and blood pressure Moore and her team took data from 2,632 men and women aged between 30 and 64 years, who were part of the Framingham Offspring Study – an offshoot of the Framingham Heart Study. All participants had normal blood pressure at the start of the trial. Over the 16-year follow-up period, the researchers observed that the participants who consumed under 2,500 milligrams of sodium each day had higher blood pressure than those who consumed higher quantities of sodium. The results seem counterintuitive. As the authors write: “While we expected dietary sodium intake to be positively associated with both SBP [systolic blood pressure] and DBP [diastolic blood pressure], the opposite was found.” Although the findings appear to kick against the status quo, they are in line with other recent studies asking similar questions. Research has shown that there is a “J-shaped relationship” between cardiovascular risk and sodium. This means that low-sodium diets and very high-sodium diets both carry a higher risk of heart disease. Many people in the United States sit in the middle of this curve, where the cardiovascular risk is at its lowest. “We saw no evidence that a diet lower in sodium had any long-term beneficial effects on blood pressure. Our findings add to growing evidence that current recommendations for sodium intake may be misguided.” Potassium as important as sodium The importance of dietary potassium is also underlined in this study. The team found that individuals with the lowest blood pressure were those who had the highest intake of sodium and potassium. Conversely, those with the highest blood pressure had the lowest intake of sodium and potassium. Moore says: “This study and others point to the importance of higher potassium intakes, in particular, on blood pressure and probably cardiovascular outcomes as well.” Similar effects were also seen when magnesium and calcium intakes were analysed; higher levels were linked to lower blood pressure, and vice versa. The authors conclude that: “These long-term data from the Framingham Study provide no support for lowering sodium intakes among healthy adults to below 2.3 grams per day as recommended. This study does support the finding of a clear inverse association between potassium, magnesium, and calcium and blood pressure change over time.” Moore wants her study to play a part in shifting dietary decisions throughout the U.S. She says: “I hope that this research will help refocus the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans on the importance of increasing intakes of foods rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium for the purpose of maintaining a healthy blood pressure.” Moore also makes it clear that there may be certain people who are particularly sensitive to sodium and who might, therefore, benefit from reducing salt in their diet. Perhaps in the future, methods of screening for salt sensitivity might help to establish which individuals need to be more careful. As more studies conclude that sodium’s role in hypertension is less vital than once thought, dietary recommendations are sure to change in line with the findings. This changing field of nutrition science is one to watch. (Written by Jessica Norris Fact checked by Alexandra Sanfins, Ph.D.)

Thank you to the dedicated teams at NASA who have worked tirelessly to make this mission a reality,” NASA chief Bill Nelson said. He added: “Congratulations to Axiom, SpaceX, and the Axiom-1 crew for making this first private mission to the International Space Station a reality.” According to the space agency, the astronaut team will spend more than a week on the ISS carrying out scientific research, outreach, and commercial activities. NASA will broadcast the docking of the SpaceX capsule, hatch opening, and welcome ceremony live starting at 5:45 a.m. EDT Saturday, via this
In the most recent update of the mission, Axiom Space tweeted early Saturday: “The #Ax1 astronauts (and Caramel the dog) just checked in as they pass over the southern tip of South America. They are preparing to dock to the @Space_Station.” Axiom Space is due to launch a second commercial mission to the International Space Station between fall 2022 and late spring 2023. The ban means Smith will not be presenting one of the major awards at next year’s Oscars, as is tradition for the best actor winner. The academy in its Friday statement also expressed “deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances.” The academy has not revoked Oscars from expelled members Harvey Weinstein or Roman Polanski. With his resignation last week, Smith lost the ability to vote for nominees and winners. Smith has been nominated for four Oscars, winning once. At the March 27 Academy Awards, Rock came out to present the best documentary award and made jokes about several attendees, including Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. “Jada, I love you. ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it,” Rock said. Pinkett Smith, who has spoken publicly about her hair loss condition, alopecia, had a closely shaved head similar to that of Demi Moore in the 1997 movie. Smith strode from his front-row seat on to the stage and smacked Rock, stunning the comedian, the theater crowd and viewers at home. Many thought it was a planned gag set up by the show or the men themselves, but the seriousness of the situation set in after Smith returned to his seat and angrily twice shouted at Rock to “keep my wife’s name out your (expletive) mouth.” (AP)

The actor believes the traumatic experiences of the war will forever be etched into the memories of many youths. “None of these children will ever be the same again after what they have seen and what they have experienced,” she said. “So the leaders of the UK, Germany, Japan, Norway, and Australia, when you meet to decide how much funding you will give to support humanitarian aid, will you stand up for refugees everywhere? Will you contribute the billions they need,” she added. On a concluding note, Chopra asked her fans and followers to support the cause. “I’m asking everyone who sees this video to please amplify this call. Post yourself, share a video from an activist or share this video, so that our leaders know we need the world to stand up and support refugees. This is the largest refugee crisis we have seen as human beings,” she said. them. The academy also apologized for its handling of the situation and allowing Smith to stay and accept his best actor award for “King Richard.” “During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry,” the academy said. “This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented.” In a statement in the days following the Oscars, the academy said Smith was asked to leave the ceremony but refused. But it’s not clear how the message was delivered to Smith or what form it took, and several media outlets reported that he was never formally told to leave the Dolby Theatre. The Los Angeles Times reported in a story Thursday that Oscars producer Will Packer told Smith: “Officially, we don’t want you to leave. We want you to stay.”
to help the displaced people from Ukraine. “World leaders, this is a direct appeal to you. We need you to answer the call from activists and advocates working to support the humanitarian and refugee crisis that we are watching unfold every day in Eastern Europe. We need you to take immediate action to help the displaced people from Ukraine, and all around the world,” she said. Chopra stated that more than two million children have been forced to leave everything behind in search of safety in the neighbouring countries. “Together with 2.5 million children internally displaced inside Ukraine, it’s one of the fastest, largest large-

He pre-emptively resigned from the academy last week during the run-up to the meeting, calling his actions “shocking, painful, and inexcusable.” Smith will keep the Oscar he won after the slap, and he will remain eligible to be nominated for and to win more of them in the 10-year period, though he can’t show up to accept

Dipika wins 2 gold at Squash C’ship NEW DELHI, APR 9 (PTI): Less than six months after giving birth to twins, Dipika Pallikal made the mother of all comebacks on Saturday when she teamed up with Saurav Ghosal and longtime teammate Joshna Chinappa to win the mixed doubles and women’s doubles title at World Doubles Championships. Dipika, playing her first competitive event since October 2018, first clinched the mixed doubles title with Ghosal with a 11-6, 11-8 win over England’s Adrian Waller and Alison Waters. An hour and a half later, Dipika and Joshna triumphed in the women’s doubles final after a hard fought 11-9, 4-11, 11-8 win over England’s Sarah Jane Perry and Waters. In the year of Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, the tournament was a perfect preparation for the seasoned trio of Dipika, Joshna and Ghosal who continue to bring laurels to the country even after more than 15 years of competing at the highest level. They are hoping their performance in the World Doubles gets noticed and they are back in the government’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). I was quite edgy at the start of the tournament but got better as I played more matches. “It is a good preparation for us for CWG which is the main target. The competition is more or less the same (here and CWG) and we know more about our opponents and we know where we need to improve,” the 30-year-old Dipika told PTI. After giving birth to twins in October, Dipika had begun training in December at the ISA in Chennai with Joshna and Ghosal. “It is also a relief to be

La Liga: Sevilla beat Granada 4-2; reclaims 2nd spot MADRID, APR 9 (AP): Sevilla scored twice in second-half stoppage time to beat Granada 4-2 and reclaim second place in the Spanish league. Sevilla’s first win in five rounds lifted it three points clear of Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, which both have games over the weekend. Runaway leader Real Madrid was nine points clear before hosting Getafe on Saturday. Sevilla was staring at another costly stumble after Víctor Díaz equalized by heading home a corner kick with just two minutes remaining in regulation time to make it 2-2. But the hosts pressed for the winner which came when striker Rafa Mir steered in a superb headed pass by Ivan Rakitic after Papu Gómez found him in the area with a lob. Gómez, who entered the game with Mir with around 20 minutes left, capped the victor y by scoring after Oliver Torres squared the ball into the heart of the box in the ninth and final minute of injury time. “We showed our character,” said Mir after recording his ninth league goal of the campaign.
honest that I can still perform. Training is one thing but to be able to do that in a match is another. Never thought we would get this result in my first event in more than three years but so glad that we were able to tick all the boxes. “There were people who felt I won’t be able to do this (after motherhood) but I was never in doubt. The bigger goal remains CWG and Asian Games, so looking forward to that,” said Dipika. Dipika and Joshna made history in 2014 when they won the women’s doubles gold at the CWG. Compared to Asian Games, the competition in CWG is
much tougher with all top nations competing, barring Egypt. Save the Egyptians, players from all top squash playing countries took part here too. Joshna played a brilliant final alongside Dipika and the duo hung in there after losing the second game. “The job gets easier when you have a strong partner like Dipika. We have got confidence from this result but we need to work harder,” said Joshna after the final. Dipika and Joshna had won a bronze in World Doubles back in 2017. India’s highest ranked player Ghosal said it was a crucial preparatory event.

SUNCHEON (SOUTH KOREA), APR 9 (PTI): P V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth’s impressive run ended in the semifinals after they went down in straight games at the Korea Open Super 500 badminton tournament here on Saturday. Former world champion Sindhu, who came into the tournament after claiming the Swiss Open, suffered her fourth successive defeat to 20-year-old An Seyoung, losing 14-21 17-21 in 48 minutes. For world championships silver medallist Srikanth, it ended in yet another semifinal finish as he came up short against Asian Games champion Jonatan Christie, going down 19-21 16-21 in 50 minutes. Sindhu, seeded third, tried everything at her disposal but couldn’t find a way to get past the world number four An Seyoung, who gave ample display of her athleticism and precision, leaving the Indian to do the catch-up job from the start. The second seeded Korean rode on her superb
retrieving skills to gallop to a 6-1 lead early on. Next she dived twice in quick succession on both flanks to blunt Sindhu’s attack and sealed it with a delightful drop. Two powerful returns took Sindhu to 4-7 but An Seyoung came up with two precise returns, a body blow and then produced another over-the-head return to gain a healthy 11-6 lead at the break. Sindhu tried to step up the pace but An Seyoung displayed a wide array of shots to always stay a step ahead. The Indian got a few points with her smashes but she couldn’t put pressure on the Korean. An Seyoung disposed off two weak lifts from Sindhu and then grabbed eight game points, two of which were saved by the Indian before the Korean unleashed a lightening straight smash to seal it comfortably. Sindhu was off to a good 3-0 start after the change of ends but An Seyoung soon surged ahead to 5-3.

Indian women’s football team before the friendly match. NEW DELHI, APR 9 (PTI): The Indian women’s football team earned its second straight victory in Jordan, beating the hosts 1-0 in a friendly after a strike by forward Manisha Kalyan in Zarqa. Manisha netted the game’s only goal in the second half (48th minute) on Friday night to help the Blue Tigresses get their second victory on the trot at the Prince Mohammed Stadium. Earlier this week, India had defeated Egypt by the same margin at the same venue. Both the sides looked to get on the front foot from the start, creating chances near the opposition area.

Golovkin stops Murata to win unified middleweight title
LONDON, APR 9 (AGENCIES): Gennady Golovkin is the unified middleweight champion again after stopping Ryota Murata in nine rounds in Saitama in Japan. The 40-year-old Kazakh added the WBA (Super) belt to his IBF title, reclaiming the belt he lost to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in their 2018 rematch. Golovkin recovered from a slow start to stop Murata in his tracks with a counter right hand and the win puts ‘Triple G’ in pole position to fight Alvarez in a trilogy fight later this year. Alvarez and Golovkin are yet to sign a deal for their highly anticipated third fight and the Mexican is due to move up to light-heavyweight to challenge WBA (Super) champion Dmitry Bivol on May 7. Murata, who won gold at the London 2012 Olympics, had success in the early rounds with some punishing body shots that appeared to knock the wind out of Golovkin.
Everton beat Man Utd; Chelsea thrash Southampton 6-0 LONDON, APR 9 (AFP): Relegation-threatened Everton earned a priceless win against misfiring Manchester United on Saturday as Chelsea hammered Southampton 6-0 on a potentially decisive day in the race for the Premier League top four. Arsenal stumbled again, losing 2-1 against Brighton while Leeds pulled further away from the drop zone with an emphatic 3-0 win against struggling Watford. Frank Lampard has struggled to inspire Everton since taking over from the sacked Rafael Benitez in late January, winning just two of his nine league games before United’s visit. A 3-2 defeat in midweek against Burnley left the club just one point above their relegation rivals and desperately short of confidence. But goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made two fine saves to deny Marcus Rashford in the early stages in the spring sunshine at Goodison Park. The decisive moment in the 1-0 win came mid-
India got the first corner of the match, which was sent in by Ratanbala Devi, and was headed goalwards by Manisha. However, the chance was cleared and Jordan set on their own attack at the other end. India goalkeeper Aditi Chauhan, however, was up to the task as she made the save, keeping the scores level. Chauhan was again called into action a few minutes later, when she calmly collected a shot off a Jordan free-kick. As the game progressed, the Blue Tigresses started gaining more control in the middle. A couple of efforts by Anju Tamang and Manisha to open up
rassing rout. Arsenal are having a wobble at the wrong time after putting themselves in a strong position to qualify to play in the Champions League for the first time since 2016/17. The home defeat against Brighton means Mikel Arteta’s men have now lost three of their past four league games and they are now level with fierce rivals Tottenham, having played the same number of games. Brighton took the lead at the Emirates Stadium when Leandro Trossard turned home a low cross from Enock Mwepu while the Zambian midfielder himself added a second. Martin Odegaard scored a late consolation. Raphinha, Rodrigo and Jack Harrison all found the net to give Leeds a third win in four matches and take them nine points clear of the relegation zone. Manchester City and Liverpool go head to head at the Etihad on Sunday in a top-of-the-table clash that could decide the outcome of the Premier League.
Gennady Golovkin won the WBA (Super) belt. But he remained patient, falling back on his famously stiff jab, and was able to snap back the head of Murata on a few occasions. Murata was unable to build on his success to the body, allowing Golovkin to eventually take over in round five, when he was finally able to put combinations together. A hard right hand from Golovkin in round six sent Murata’s mouthpiece flying, although the Japanese fighter was able to stay on his feet. Golovkin continued to try and punch through Mu-
rata’s guard and was now in full flow, showing flashes of the fighter who had steamrollered most of his opponents down the years. He stunned Murata in round nine, backing him on to the ropes before his visibly hurt opponent decided to push forward in a desperate attempt to turn the tide. Bu Golovkin was able to read Murata’s advances, step back and fire off a devastating right counter that finally put Murata down. The towel from Murata’s corner came in, giving Golovkin the 42nd win of his illustrious career.

Abhishek guides SRH to easy win over CSK
NAVI MUMBAI, APR 9 (PTI): Indian Premier League’s sentimental favourites Chennai Super Kings slumped to their fourth successive defeat with young Abhishek Sharma’s 50-ball75 guiding Sunrisers Hyderabad to their maiden eightwicket win in this edition of the tournament. The 21-year-old Sharma took the attack to the opposition with a blistering first IPL half-century which was studded with five fours and three sixes, to help Sunrisers easily chased down the target of 155 with 14 balls to spare. CSK now has to win at least eight out of their remaining 10 games in order to reach the magic figure of 16 points which during past few years is the cut-off for play-off qualifications. It was Sunrisers first win of this IPL, having lost to Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants in their earlier matches. CSK have already lost to Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings in earlier games. On a sluggish pitch, Sharma took the pressure off his captain Kane Williamson (32 off 40 balls) who played second fiddle to the youngster who was in top form after failing to

Williamson was out in the 13th over off the bowling of left-arm seamer Mukesh Choudhary (1/30) after sharing 89-run opening stand with Sharma, who also fell in the 18th to Dwayne Bravo (1/29) with Sunrisers needing just 10 runs. Rahul Tripathi (39 not out off 15 balls) then ensured that there was no hiccups in the run chase. He glanced Bravo for a boundary to finish the chase in
style. Sharma was dropped when on 62 by Ravindra Jadeja off the bowling of Bravo but by then CSK have already lost the plot. The Sunrisers needed 47 runs from six overs with nine wickets in hand. Sharma struck Mukesh Choudhary for a six in the next over and Tripathi then joined the party with a maximum and a four off Chris Jordan in the 17th over to make it a no contest. Earlier, Moeen Ali top-scored with a 35-ball
48 to guide CSK to 154 for seven after being asked to bat first. S k i p p e r R av i n d r a Jadeja (23 off 15 balls) played a little cameo towards the end to prop up CSK after they lost a few wickets in a heap. Robin Uthappa (15) was dismissed by Washington Sundar (2/21) in the off-spinner’s very first ball, when the batter ended up skying a catch while going for a slog-sweep. Having conceded 25
runs in the first three overs, SRH were back in the game and it got better for them with the introduction of T Natarajan (2/30) into the attack as the left-arm pacer bowled Ruturaj Gaikwad (16). Nearing 100 and with some more batting to come on a pitch where the ball seemed to stop, CSK were well-placed when Rayudu departed after playing a part in rebuilding the innings. However, Williamson’s gamble to bring in Markram worked as CSK lost their fourth wicket at 108 in the 15th over. In a soft dismissal, Natarajan accounted for Shivam Dube as the defending champions lost three wickets in quick succession. Two overs later, even the great Mahendra Singh Dhoni (3) was walking back to the dugout, with CSK struggling at 122 for six with 15 balls left to add to their total. BRIEF SCORES: Chennai Super Kings: 154 for 7 in 20 overs (Moeen Ali 48, Ambati Rayudu 27, Washington Sundar 2/21, T Natarajan 2/30). Sunrisers Hyderabad: 155 for 2 in 17.4 overs (Abhishek Sharma 75, Rahul Tripathi 39 not out; Mukesh Choudhary 1/30).

NEW DELHI, APR 9 (PTI): Indian boxers Govind Sahani (48kg), Ananta Pralhad Chopde (54kg) and Sumit (75kg) struck gold at the Thailand Open in Phuket, notching up comprehensive wins in their respective bouts on Saturday. Sahani and Sumit, the reigning national champion, dominated their bouts from start to finish and won with identical 5-0 margins against local pugilists Natthaphon Thuamcharoen and Peetapat Yeasungnoen
respectively. Ananta, on the other hand, displayed a good mix of aggression and defense to topple Thai boxer Ritthiamon Saengsawang by unanimous decision. However, Amit Panghal (52kg) and Monika (48kg), Varinder Singh (60kg) and Ashish Kumar (81kg), could not go the distance and ended their campaigns with a silver each. Panghal, the 2019 world championship silver medallist, lost a closely-
fought bout to Rogen Ladon of Phillipines via a 2-3 split decision. With little separating the two boxers through the course of the bout, the 26-year-old Indian managed to edge past the Filipino in the first round. But Laden made a comeback to take the following two rounds. In the men’s 81kg summit clash, Ashish, last edition’s 75kg gold medallist, toiled hard but couldn’t find a way to stop Kazakhstan’s Nurbek Oralbay, succumbing to a 0-5 loss. The 26-year-old Monika, on the other hand, put up a spirited performance but went down to local boxer Chutamas Raksa 0-5 to settle for the silver medal. Varinder also went down by a 0-5 margin to local boxer Khunatip Pidnuch. The Indian contingent bettered its last edition’s haul of eight medals — one gold, four silver and three bronze. Indian boxers bring home 10 medals, including three golds, four silvers, and three bronze with three boxers yet to fight in their final bouts. Manisha (57kg), Pooja (69kg) and Bhagyabati Kachari (75kg) had signed off with bronze medals on Friday.
