President’s Message

A Time to Give Back

It is without question, a great time to be in the filter business! Driven by a strong economy and an increased awareness in the need for improved air quality, many distributors and manufacturers are looking at a record 2019. Demand for air filters is up almost 17% over the past 18 months for the combined North American and European markets. Granted, while the increase in demand can be seen at the order entry level, not all this increase is being reflected in output due to labor shortages at both the manufacturing and service levels but still with double digit increases in output, who’s complaining?

These numbers seem to fall in line with record US total exports YTD and are indicative of a demand being driven from the commercial segment in particular the foremarket where the average cost per filter is higher. And much of this spike in demand can be attributed to repatriated corporate earnings, which is being spent on expansion and cost reductions.

Compared to the filter industry’s 2% to 3% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of the past two decades this has been a welcome although unexpected shift.

Last month several NAFA members were seen at FILTECH in Cologne Germany, an impressive event first established in 1965 and now without question the largest filter show worldwide with over 200 technical presentations at the conference and roughly 450 exhibitors at the show. The number of exhibitors was estimated to be up 20% over 2018 and attendance would have seen a similar increase. When I ran into Ray Riopel on the show floor, I was greeted with his usual big smile and the announcement that “This is great, I have found so many things that I have been looking for.” This year in particular we seemed to receive an insight into how rapidly our market is changing and what solutions we will see in the future.

Amid all this good news, we reflect on what was one of my favorite gatherings of NAFA folks, the annual meeting in

Montreal. A big thanks goes to Roberta and her committee for bringing together such a great program. It was fitting coincidence that our Canadian colleague was program chair for the event. I also want to thank Michelle, Terry, Jenny and Tony who have an unmatched talent for finding quality keynote speakers, for locating such great meeting venues and for always being on top of things. So please make a point to go out of your way and let them know that you appreciate their work here at NAFA. I want to thank Trey again for his leadership over the past year. Trey is the third generation from his family to make his career in the industry. I knew Trey’s dad as do most of us and also his grandfather. In case you didn’t notice, Trey stuck steadfastly to his agenda this year, completing a new Strategic Plan for our organization but also renewing our focus on membership and certifications.

It was during his tenure and with a new perspective that we saw the beginning of a well received Young Professionals group and launched the NAFA podcast.

He continued the tradition of service for which the Fly family has always been known and for which we are all very grateful. And a personal thanks to Trey for leaving me with such a strong Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

These are all individuals with extremely full plates, yet still willing to give back to an organization in which they believe.

Finally, there is another group of people that I want to thank and that is all the past presidents and as well as the general membership of years past. When I first became involved with NAFA in the 80’s, it seemed that at those early meetings the discussion always came back around to “what is our purpose?” There was a feeling among those early members that something good could come out of such an organization as this. I thank these individuals for their vision and also the membership for trusting that vision and then rolling up their sleeves to write manuals such as the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration, to establish certification programs as well as continuing education programs, to raise money for NAFA funded research and NAFA scholarships.

From this point in time it is difficult to imagine a world without NAFA. There can be no doubt in anyone’s mind that we will look back in 30 years and say that these were the good old days.

Have you looked at the stock market recently? What is there not to like? Yet the industry is challenged more than ever with the need for new solutions. It seems that the more we learn from research, the more we realize that there is still much to be done. It all makes selling people on NAFA a welcome challenge. This year I am asking each member to consider making a commitment to give back in three ways. First, make a commitment to bring in one new member. Second, get connected and get engaged in NAFA. Last, make a conscientious effort to mentor someone this year and leave your own personal legacy.

If you are uncertain as to how to sell someone on our organization ask Steve Griffiths from Victoria, Australia why he travels the distance to attend meetings, to become CAFS certified, and to agree to serve on our Board. In my mind it comes down to three things: Community, Education and Networking. Community, because you can’t spend three days with folks like Jeff Holt, Tom Ryan or Chris Zaker and not leave excited.

Education because for us to succeed, it is important that our customer be successful first. That means becoming intimate with the technical side of our business and providing the customer with best products and services available. One of my favorite quotes is one with which each of us is familiar; “a rising tide lifts all boats.” While John F. Kennedy didn’t coin the phrase, he certainly provided it the current notoriety. In the same vein, a stronger NAFA will lift the entire industry through increased knowledge and a commitment to integrity. And each of us will be the better for it. Networking because as an organization, we network not twice a year but year-round.

I close with a thanks to each of you for allowing me the opportunity to give back to an organization which has meant so much to me over the years.

Preventative maintenance The implementation of a preventative maintenance program including proper belt drive installation, tensioning procedures and best practices will increase productivity, reduce downtime and yield the additional benefit of improved workplace safety.

The majority of power transmission drive problems are attributed to improper installation and maintenance.

This article is intended to provide guidance in avoiding drive problems, extending drive life and maximizing performance while maintaining a safe working environment.

When compared to the cost of production downtime and the labor costs associated with a belt failure, the cost of a belt is relatively insignificant. Generally speaking, at any given production facility, 80% of the downtime related to power transmission belts can be found on 20% of the drives in the plant. In other words, 80% of the drives are

fine. The remaining 20% are “problem drives� requiring frequent attention and replacement. Additionally, it’s not uncommon for a large industrial facility to spend thousands of dollars annually to determine what type of replacement belt is needed for a particular drive. Worn belts are often difficult to identify as their part numbers sometimes become impossible to read after lengthy service.

Safety Power transmission products are potentially dangerous. Failing to follow recommended application information and procedures for installation, and maintenance of products may result in serious bodily injury or death.

Make sure that product selected for any application is recommended for that service. Always follow the recommendations of the original equipment manufacturer. Contact Megadyne for specific information.

• Before doing any maintenance work on power drives, always switch off the power and lockout the drive. A tag should be attached stating, "Danger - do not operate."

• Always use static dissipating belts in conjunction with industry approved methods to dissipate electrical charges on drives used in hazardous atmospheres.

• One should always try to operate the equipment after shutdown to make sure you have locked-out the proper switchbox, ensuring that the switchbox is operating properly and also to release any stored energy.

• Never use Megadyne belts for aircraft applications. Megadyne belts are not designed for or intended for use on aircraft propellers, rotors or accessory drives. Do not use on helicopters or private, commercial, ultralight or any other airborne aircraft application.

• Use belt guards to provide protection for personnel from contact with drive components.

Never test or operate belt drives without guards in place.

• Always wear gloves to protect from sharp edges and hot surfaces.

• Never wear loose or bulky clothing in close proximity to an unguarded drive where it could become entangled in the drive and cause injury to personnel.

• Always be aware of pinch points where hands and fingers can be injured, especially where the belt enters the sheave or sprocket.

• Lower maintenance costs

• Always keep the area around the drive free of clutter and debris.

• Energy savings

• Never re-use damaged pulleys. They should be replaced if not repairable.

• Increased productivity

• Longer drive component life • More efficient drive systems • Safe operation • Reduced downtime

Belt installation After correct installment and alignment of pulleys you can install the belts. Always move the drive unit, usually an electric motor mounted on an adjustable base, to decrease the drive center distance and create slack so you can easily slip the belts onto the pulleys without force. Never force belts onto a drive with a tool such as a screwdriver or a pry bar. Doing so will rupture the fabric cover or break the load-carrying cords inside the belt.

Proper belt tension Proper belt tension is essential for maximum belt life and efficiency.

Improper belt tension is the leading cause of premature belt failure and increased costs. Under-tensioned belts lead to slippage, overheating, excessive pulley wear, rollover and noise, all of which lead to higher maintenance costs and inefficient power transmission. Also, over-tensioning belts leads to premature wear of bearings, shafts and pulleys. The result is more frequent replacement of drive components and costly downtime.

Proper tension is the lowest tension at which the belt won’t slip or jump teeth under peak conditions.

V-Belt belt tensioning V-belt tensioning can be performed using a tension tester gauge using the procedure in Figure 2. After seating the belts in the sheave groove and adjusting center distance to take up slack in the belts, further increase the tension until only a slight bow on the slack side is apparent while the drive is operating under load. Stop the drive and use the gauge to measure the necessary force to depress the belt and deflect 1/64-inch for every inch of belt span (use center belt on multiple belt drives).

For example, a deflection for a 50-inch belt span is 50/64ths, or 25/32-inch.

The amount of force required to deflect the belt should compare with the deflection forces noted in Megadyne technical manuals.

Best practices • Matching V-Belts. When using multiple grooved sheaves, be sure that all of the belts are the same brand. Always replace complete sets of v-belts even if only one is worn or damaged.

• Proper alignment is essential for long belt life. Check belt alignment whenever you maintain or replace belts or whenever you remove or install pulleys.

• Select Correct V-Belts to match Sheave Grooves • Don’t mix belt brands; stick with one manufacturer • Don’t mix new & used belts • Replace worn pulleys after 3 belt replacements • To check for loose belts, put your fingertips in a sheave groove (after drive shutdown). If sheave is so hot you cannot comfortably keep them there, the belts have probably been slipping.

Bob Dante submitted the Verizon Branchburg, New Jersey site for the 2019 NAFA Clean Air Award. The Verizon NEC has a multitude of chilled water equipment fed from its Air and Water Cooled Chiller Plants. The air filtration practices adhered to are commensurate with a facility that is mission critical to a multibillion dollar industry.

The site utilizes 11 Air Handling Units, 5 Fan Coil Units, and 136 Computer Room Air Handlers and supporting equipment to facilitate the cooling needs of a critical data center clean room environment.

A large portion of this equipment is fed from the facilities 3 MUA's Outside Air make up units. These units initiate the first level of filtration with its MERV 8 Purolator Defiant Mark 80 pleated filters that prep the air before it reaches the first prefilter of any piece of air handling equipment.

The 24/7 Building Operations team at the site is dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of air is delivered to not only every server rack but office cubicle as well. Because of this they employ Air Handler MERV 8 final filters in all equipment serving these critical spaces.

Cleaning of the HVAC equipment is also a priority at the NEC since so much fresh air is used. Due to the criticality of this equipment we utilize the around the clock Operations Team and our Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to facilitate the service requirements that exceeds industry standard. Each unit is inspected in depth Monthly, SemiAnnually, and Annually in addition to Building tours of every critical and mechanical space three times a day. These filters are only as good as the air that flows through them so every unit has been sealed and gasketed to ensure air leaks do not thwart our efforts by allowing unfiltered air to pass.

The Verizon engineering team is dedicated to ensuring that the NEC in Branchburg is compliant to the latest of ASHRAE standards and recommendations. Given the massive cooling needs required by a Data Center and the abundance of free cooling available via fresh air economizer, the NEC needs and uses an enormous amount of air filters. Air filtration is a key element to ensuring the continued success of the NEC, which is the life blood of the company.

An Example of a Pufferfish It is no secret that the airline industry has been in flux for decades.

In 2014, Frontier Airlines® decided to launch its new marketing plan that included making the animals printed on the tail of their planes larger and more prominent. In an article by Denver’s local 9News, one of the reasons cited for doing this included recognizing how important animals were to people and wanting to connect more with their client base. In fact, in 2016, Frontier® yielded to a year’s worth of requests from 3rd and 4th grade students in the Denver area and put Marty the Marmot on one of their planes.

This was a huge public relations event that involved the community while also promoting the refreshed brand of the company. The school principal said it was a great lesson for the kids in hard work, advocacy, and activism and thanked Frontier Airlines for helping them make an unforgettable memory.

In this example, Frontier Airlines used public involvement in a simple way to self-promote and participate in the community in a meaningful way. However, by also putting animals on the tail of their planes, they (purposefully or not) made themselves look bigger and more visible, just like a pufferfish.

Do you remember the last time you were on a plane? How about the last two times? Did you fly with the same carrier? I’m sure you didn’t even think about which specific plane you were on, just what type of plane. By putting animal images on the planes, Frontier is drawing attention to the size of their fleet, rather than letting it be obscure. Do you know how many planes any carrier has? Do you care? Probably not, but if you fly Frontier, you will likely remember which animal was on your plane. You may even go look up, just like I did, how many planes they have and what animals adorn them. The animals have nothing to do with flight. In fact, they are only there for customer enjoyment. It is a simple, yet easy way to be seen, which is what their marketing department was going for. This is exactly what I want for you in your business.

They sound simple, and they are. However, most people think they are doing these things, when they either aren’t doing them or aren’t doing them effectively. We know they are effective when reality shows us they are. This means we are setting goals, tracking, and observing the results! Too often, business owners say they are doing something, but without tracking the results it’s just action.

They think they know what is happening, but they aren’t tracking it to determine whether it is true and effective.

Don’t get me wrong, you do have an idea of what your business is doing, but without proper tracking, you don’t really know. It’s like trying to get somewhere based on the general direction, rather than the specific address.

Even in subjective fields like therapy, we are asked to quantify our results in order to show us our progress.

We need to say something to the effect of: “I think I’m about a four on a scale of 10, and I’ll know I’m successful when I’m at a seven.” Why do therapists do that? They are helping you to quantify your results so you can determine if you’ve achieved them. Key Performance Indicators, or KPIs, need to be part of your everyday life, because while these six steps seem really simple, you will never know if they are effective, or if you have achieved them, if you don’t have a way to measure the results.

Improving Indoor Air Quality During Wildfires

In California and other U.S. western states, wildfires have become more frequent and intense, adversely impacting air quality and human health. Smoke from wildfires contains many toxins and irritants, including particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter, which, due to their size, penetrate deep into the lungs and contribute to cardiopulmonary and respiratory illness. Many health agencies and departments suggest people stay indoors during wildfires to limit their exposure to these particles. But how healthy is the air indoors during a wildfire, and can it be improved?

Brett Singer and Rengie Chan1 are leaders of Berkeley Lab’s Indoor Environment Group. The Indoor Environment Group, which is supported by the Department of Energy, is one of the nation's leading research groups seeking to advance the health, productivity, and energy efficiency of the built environment.

Singer and Chan have worked with California homes, schools, and offices to improve air quality by ensuring adequate ventilation during normal operation and use of high-efficiency filters to reduce particles in indoor air, both during normal air pollution and especially during wildfires.

Schools are a particular concern because rates of asthma are higher in children than in adults, and the particles can trigger asthma attacks.

What are the most important factors affecting indoor air quality during wildfires?

Singer: A lot of factors are involved, but the main ones are how the building is ventilated, whether there is any filtration and how effective the filtration system is. During smoke events, most people now know that they should keep windows closed, and that helps. But outdoor air may be coming in through mechanical systems – which occurs in most commercial buildings and some homes – and through uncontrolled air movement through cracks and openings in the building shell. Filtration can be used to remove particles as air is brought into the building by a mechanical system or by recirculating air already inside the building.

By how much do these factors affect the amount of these tiny particles indoors?

Singer: An older home or commercial building that has not been upgraded and doesn’t have high performance filters can have indoor particle levels that are 70% to 80% of outdoor levels even when all the windows are closed. Homes built in the last 10 to 20 years and older homes that have had very good air sealing upgrades can have indoor particle levels that are only 50% or less of those outdoors, when windows are closed. And particle levels can be reduced to

less than 20% of outdoor levels with good filtration. Airtight homes or office buildings with high performance filtration can reduce exposures to outdoor particles to less than 5%.

A really good filter has a MERV rating of 12 or better.

“MERV” is the minimum efficiency reporting value, one standard way of grading filters. Other common ratings you can find on air filters are MPR (microparticle performance rating) and FPR (filter performance rating); look for MPR of rating 1900 or higher and FPR of rating 9 or higher for good filtration.

What special challenges do schools face during wildfires?

Chan: The occupancy is much higher in a school than in an office environment or home. A typical classroom can have 30 students plus the teacher in roughly 1,000 square feet.

We do not advise stopping outdoor air ventilation entirely because it can degrade the indoor air quality and interfere with learning. The solution is to have very good filters installed in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system and reduce ventilation to the minimum needed to avoid stuffy conditions. In addition to the exposure to wildfire smoke inside classrooms, schools also face additional concerns of exposing students to high levels of wildfire smoke in the ambient air as they travel from home to school.

What are simple ways to improve indoor air quality during wildfires?

Singer: Keep windows and doors closed. If you are in a house with a mechanical ventilation system, turn it off during the fire. And remember to turn it back on after the fire! If you have access to the building’s HVAC system, install the highest-efficiency air filter that’s compatible with the system. Most systems can handle a MERV 13 filter that has been designed for efficient airflow. And of course, the HVAC system must be operating for the filters to be effective.

Most homes have a “forced air” heating or heating and cooling system and all of these have a filter that can be upgraded for whole-house air cleaning. And modern systems have a “circulation” model that will recirculate house air through the system continuously even if no heating or cooling is needed. This type of operation can be controlled through the thermostat, using a “fan on” or similar setting. If you don’t have access to the HVAC system, get a portable air cleaner designed for the size of the room, or get two if necessary.

Chan: Be prepared before wildfires start.

Have these higher efficiency air filters on hand and confirm ahead of time that the HVAC system can handle that kind of air filter. Whenever there are extreme events it’s pretty hard to buy filters, but filters make a significant difference. In a study with California schools, we found just replacing MERV 8 filters with MERV 13 filters reduced the amount of these fine particles in school classrooms by 40%. Having indoor air quality monitoring in place before the wildfires start will give you time to know how to read and interpret the information from your air quality monitors.

Singer: If fitted and worn correctly, respirators can reduce exposure for people who can't avoid being outdoors for extended periods.

Guidance is provided in the resources linked above. Using a properly fitted respirator can also carry risks for anyone who already has trouble breathing; so it is important for people to consult with their physicians. ■

Clearing the Air: Cannabis Indoor Grow Rooms Recreational cannabis use is now legal in 11 states, an additional 23 states allow cannabis only for medicinal purposes. The U.S. cannabis industry, exceeding $9 billion in sales in 2017, is predicted to approach $50 billion over the next decade. Canadian sales are expected to exceed $5 billion a year within five years. This growth has led to an increasing number of large-scale cannabis growers, facing unique air filtration challenges to maintain their indoor grow rooms.

Indoor Grow Rooms Most cannabis is grown indoors where climate can be carefully controlled—the crop grows best between 70˚F-75˚F, with relative humidity between 50%-60%. In addition, indoor air quality provides as much value as any other technique in the growing process. A large number of contaminants can damage and wipe out an entire crop. An efficient and hardworking HVAC system is necessary for both temperature and air quality control, but the cost of maintaining those units can be expensive, cleaning them can be laborious, and malfunctions can impact productivity.

PreVent Air Intake Screens Cannabis indoor grow rooms are usually located in rural areas.

Their chillers are outside, where they are constantly bombarded by inclement and unpredictable weather, insects, leaves, dust, cottonwood, hail and whatever else is blowing in the wind. These blow into air intake openings, block the air flow, and damage the fins and coils. That’s where PreVent air intake screens come in—reducing the need for cleaning, plus optimizing equipment energy efficiency and longevity by running a clean system.

There’s one more challenge facing operators of indoor grow rooms, too. After all, we can’t discuss cannabis air quality without mentioning its odor...

Energy Control Another HVAC-related concern in maintaining indoor grow rooms is the cost of energy. A typical grow operation uses up to 20X more energy per square foot as the typical office building. In Denver, one of the first cities to legalize marijuana, nearly 4% of the city’s power is used to grow marijuana. Dirty HVAC coils leads to HVAC inefficiency and higher energy costs: an EPA study showed that as little as 0.042in of dirt on condensing coils can cause a 21% drop in efficiency, and can increase refrigeration energy use by 35%.

The Aurora Sun Aurora Cannabis, one of the largest cultivators, is keeping pace with expanding demand by building a new 1.6 million sq. ft. facility in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. Production capacity in excess of 230,000 kilograms of high-quality cannabis a year requires more than 50 – 350-500 ton Trane chillers for temperature control, integrated with free cooling coils to reduce energy use, environmental impact and operating expenses. Maintaining clean fins and coils can be a Herculean task, which is why Aurora Cannabis has teamed with Permatron’s PreVent® and HailStop® to protect their equipment.

That Stinks Due to its strong musky skunk smell, cannabis odor elimination is also a problem for indoor grow rooms.

Almost all cites and areas have strict regulations regarding cannabis odors. In Denver, for example, the regulation is 1 part cannabis odor per 7 parts filtered air. Fortunately, adding activated carbon filters to a ventilation and exhaust system is an effective way to ensure the removal of cannabis odor, as carbon can adsorb 1/3 of its own weight in odors.

Membership Plus One

A colleague managing another trade association recently recommended a book, 212°, The Extra Degree, Extraordinary Results Begin With One Small Change (by Sam Parker), that she said helped motivate herself, the association staff, the board and her members. Based on her recommendation, and after reading a sample of the book, I ordered it, and should have it in my hands soon. The best part, the website promises it’s only a 20-minute read which means I’ll find the time to get through it. The premise is "At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water, comes steam. And with steam, you can power a train. Just one extra degree makes all the difference."

When you take time to consider what could be achieved by applying that to all areas of our lives, it’s a very powerful idea.

What if we applied that principal to NAFA? What if everyone did as Tom suggested in his President’s Message and not only renewed their membership (you should have your renewal notice in your hands already) but also made a commitment

to give back to the organization in at least one way. If everyone committed to their “membership plus one” and brought in one new member, supported one new CAFS, NCT or NCT II or brought one extra person to Annual or TECH - imagine what NAFA would look like at the end of 2020!

More people involved means more networking opportunities, more budget dollars allocated to continue to bring top-notch education to meetings, more member resources (think recent podcasts, guidelines, plans for webinars, our Chicago NCT II offering) and continued growth and advancement for the organization. All things that will take us to the next level.

In addition to what we could do for NAFA by kicking the temperature up a notch, think about what we could accomplish in our own personal lives.

Imagine the impact we could have on our families, friends or a stranger that may need a simple smile or a helping hand.

As Executive Director, I’ll be working closely with Tom Justice as he leads the NAFA Board of Directors through 2020. The Board will continue to work towards the goals in the strategic plan developed during Trey’s tenure as President. As you plan for 2020, I encourage you to consider all the ways in which you can turn it up a degree in ways that will benefit you both professionally and personally.

I know many of you will be in Orlando for the AHR Expo and I encourage you to stop by and see me, Terry and Tony in the NAFA booth (#4849).
