Thank you to those NAFA members who traveled to Scottsdale for our very successful Technical Seminar in April. Tech was a milestone in NAFA’s history. For the first time, members could attend both in person and live virtually. This was especially beneficial for those members who were restricted from travel due to the pandemic, but also our international members who could enable more participation from their organizations without the limiting travel cost needed to attend in person. The seminar was a success by every measure, and I foresee the hybrid conference model becoming standard for the future.

Feedback from members who attended the event was very positive in terms of the valuable, relevant, educational and industry specific information presented through an impressive speaker lineup. Our presenters covered a variety of topics ranging from sales training, the future of healthy indoor environments, current Covid-19 updates from the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force, to a panel discussion that communicated the myriad of struggles and factors affecting the industry supply chain in terms of both raw materials and finished goods.

For those that participated, either in person or virtually, the information presented, and the knowledge gained will be valuable to our individual businesses and the diverse facilities and industries we serve.

I again would like to thank our attendees, but also our speakers, our board of directors, our event planning committee, and especially our NAFA staff team that went above and beyond ensuring the event was a tremendous success.

As we look to the future, it is a very exciting time to be part of this industry. NAFA members have the ability to greatly impact the lives and success of the people and facilities we serve.

We have seen much change over the past year

in the way that society views the quality of the air and environment we live in. The public interest in improving the conditions of the air we breathe is at an all time high. I am proud that our organization continues to provide the expertise and guidance that facilities rely on to respond to the many concerns raised as students, coworkers, and family members return to workplaces worldwide. NAFA is the leader in advocating improvements and solutions involving clean air that make people’s lives better. Through our NAFA Foundation funded research studies, relevant guidelines, and publications, organizations globally rely on the information the experts within the NAFA membership provide to make good decisions regarding facility air quality improvements.

Improvements in air quality, through the utilization of higher performing filtration products, greatly impact everyone in a positive way.

As always, the core value of NAFA is its membership. I encourage you to seek out opportunities to become more involved in the organization. Your experiences and application knowledge will benefit other NAFA members, but also those we serve. I hope everyone has an enjoyable summer and I look forward to your continued and future participation in our valuable organization.

Update to the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration, 6th Edition Author; Jay Reese, CAFS, J & BR Associates, LLC.

new information in Chapter 9: Controlled Environments which covers new standards and updated language relative to the various industries covered. Chapter 12: Indoor Air Quality contains new terminology and a updates of 62.1 – 2019, which covers Classes 1-4. One of the most significant updates has come in Chapter 14: Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation, Photocatalytic Oxidation. This is a subject that has become extremely important since our last update and the chapter now contains substantially more information and charts/ graphs/tables explaining how this technology is being implemented in the industry. Be sure to review this information to increase your knowledge of the subject.

Background When I started the project of overseeing the updating to the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration, I was overwhelmed with not knowing where or how to start on this monumental task. After reviewing what had been done in the past, I had a better idea of what was needed. Lots of help from others!

I would be remiss if I didn’t call out all the NAFA members who helped to contribute to the 2021 update. From Past Presidents, whom I nominated to take chapters to review, to past contributors, industry consultants and experts and in general, anyone who I could convince to lend their knowledge and expertise. To each of you who contributed, on behalf of NAFA and our members, I thank and salute you.

What's new The 2021 update contains many new materials, charts, graphs, pictures and tables, updates on material that is still relevant, corrections to old materials and just about anything that we found that needed freshening up. With that said, just like any document that you produce, I’m sure some intrepid reader of the Guide will find an error or omission. In advance, if you do, please make a note of it and let NAFA Staff know, so that when we do the next update, we can include your wisdom In reading the updated guide, you’ll find that we’ve included new standards, such as the ISO 16890 section, which was important enough that we’ve created a new addendum just on that topic. We’ve also included a table in Chapter 7: HVAC Filter Testing, that compares ASHRAE 52.2-2017, EN779 and the new ISO 16890 test criteria. Also included are discussion and tables covering the new ISO 29463 standard which replaced EN 1822:2009 for HEPA/ULPA filter testing. There’s

ISO 16890 addendum On the following pages, you will find an excerpt from the new Guide, Addendum 7.2 A Brief Description of ISO 16890, which, "...establishes an efficiency classification system of air filters for general ventilation based upon particulate matter (PM). It also provides an overview of the test procedures, and specifies general requirements for assessing and marking the filters, as well as for documenting the test results. It is intended for use in conjunction with ISO 16890‑2, ISO 16890‑3 and ISO 16890‑4."1 Last words If you’re like me, you probably have a copy of the Third, Fourth, or maybe even the Fifth Edition of the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration sitting on your shelf as a reference. With all the changes in technology and updates to standards, in order to be fully knowledgeable and best positioned to assist your customers, you’ll want to order the new Sixth Edition as soon as possible so that you can read and review everything that I’ve mentioned and much more that I’ve not even touched upon. Be sure to call or email NAFA HQ and place your order for the new edition as soon as it’s available in print. You won’t be sorry.

Addendum 7.2 A Brief Description of ISO 16890

Excerpted from the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration, 6th edition

ISO 168901-4 determines the ability of an air cleaner (air filter) to remove particles of a specific size from an air stream. This test method is very similar, but not identical, to ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 52.2. ISO 16890 tests filter efficiency for clean and conditioned efficiency, pressure drop and test dust capacity. For smaller particle sizes, the aerosol is DEHS, an oil. For larger sizes the aerosol is the same KCl aerosol, a dry salt, as for 52.2.

An air filter’s performance is determined by measuring the particle counts upstream and downstream and comparing them. Particle counts are measured over the range of particle sizes from 0.3 - 10 um in 12 size channels beginning with a clean filter and, then, after an IPA (isopropyl alcohol) conditioning test.

A laboratory aerosol generator is used to create a challenge aerosol covering the required particle sizes.

The challenge aerosol is injected into the test duct and particle counts are taken for each of the size ranges.

Particle counts are measured in particle size ranges defined by the test. The recommended, but not required ranges are the same as those of ASHRAE 52.2 (See Figure 7.2.1).

Since the IPA conditioning step is expected to overpredict the loss in efficiency in real use for charged filters, the average of the two values in each size range is then calculated as representative of the filter’s efficiency in use.

In ISO 16890 the amount of particulate matter a filter will be exposed to in situ is represented by two different particle size distributions (psd) called rural and urban. The rural psd is used for calculating the mass removal efficiency for the ePM10 rated filters while the urban psd is used for the ePM2.5 and ePM1 rated filters. To calculate the mass removal efficiency for each particle size, the efficiency of the filter at that size is weighted by the amount of mass of that size in the psd. In practice, this means that a larger particle’s removal counts for more mass removal in the PM efficiency than a smaller, less massive, particle.

To determine the PM removal efficiency for particles smaller than 10 µm, the entire data set of weighted mass removal values from 0.3-10 µm (channels 1-12) are summed up to give the ePM10 value. The ePM2.5 value covers the sizes from 0.3-3 µm, and the ePM1 value covers the sizes from 0.3-1.0 µm. Dust holding data does not enter the PM efficiency calculations nor is that part of the test required.

ISO Coarse are rated based only on the initial gravimetric arrestance, so the particle size dependent efficiency test data is not used.

Filters are placed into Groups based on their efficiencies. Each group consists of the acronym ISO followed by the type of class reporting value. Thus, the groups are ISO Coarse, ISO ePM10, ISO ePM2.5, and ISO ePM1.

The group is determined through the rules shown in Figure 7.2.1. ISO Coarse filters are rated using only the initial gravimetric arrestance. The other groups are rated based on the efficiency testing without including the dust-loading data. Filters should only be compared using values in the same group.

General Description There is strong emphasis on the standardization and calibration of components. The apparatus must undergo qualification tests very similar to those of 52.2 before filter testing begins. Theoretically, a filter tested by ISO 16890 in one laboratory should have the same performance values when tested in any other correctly-operating laboratory.

Test Equipment Components of the ISO 16890 test duct are shown in Figure 7.2.2. More complete details of all the components will be found in the ISO 16890 Standard Documents.

IPA Conditioning After a filter is tested for clean filter efficiency, it is placed in a special chamber and exposed to isopropyl alcohol vapor (IPA) for 24 hours.

This exposure is designed to completely remove the electrostatic charge on filters to show how the filter would perform with only its mechanical filtration. This charging increases the removal efficiency of filters above that provided by mechanical means.

In real use, as small particles are captured, the charge is partially masked, and filters often have reduced efficiency. Conditioning with IPA, then taking the average of the clean and conditioned efficiencies, is intended to give a useful approximation of actual filter performance. IPA conditioning, rather than a particle/dust exposure, is used as the exposure is straightforward and simple to perform.

Particle Size Distributions Two psd were selected by the ISO committee based on published atmospheric aerosol distributions from around the world for use in the calculations of mass removal efficiency.

The rural distribution has more of the mass located in larger size particles; whereas, the urban distribution has more of the mass in the smaller particles. These distributions are not intended to represent a specific location or to match anyone’s actual use but are used as the standard distributions to allow for test to test (filter to filter) comparisons.

Arrestance And Test Dust Capacity Dust loading is optional except for ISO Coarse filters. If done, it is run after the clean and conditioned efficiency tests. The dust loading is done in increments with ISO 15957 L2 dust (i.e., ISO Fine). The filter arrestance is determined by comparing fed and captured dust weights. The test dust capacity is the amount of dust captured by the filter.

This capacity is intended for comparison across filters and not to determine the lifetime of a filter in a specific location.

Test Procedure The test procedure (after the system has met all qualification requirements) consists of the following steps:

1. Determine the pressure drop of the filter under test at 50%, 75%, 100% and 125% of the test airflow rate.

2. Determine particle size efficiency (PSE) of the filter at the required airflow rate.

At least 5 runs are made for each PSE curve More may be required to achieve statistical accuracy. The particle size ranges of 52.2 are the standard ones for ISO 16890 although others are acceptable.

Filter Test Report Form ISO 16890 does not require any specific report format. The efficiency tests and optional dust loading tests may be reported separately or together. Overall the whole 4-part test procedure requires the following information:

NAFA 2021 Technical Seminar Over 200 people participated in the 2021 Technical Seminar when we were able to reunite in person on May 11 - 13 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Our attendees were comprised of those who were able to join us at the Embassy Suites in Scottsdale along with virtual attendees in our first offering of this kind. Virtual attendees had a chance to participate in the educational portions of the event while in person attendees had extra opportunities to network with their peers, visit vendors at their tabletop exhibits and get in a very hot round of golf to support the NAFA Foundation.

A variety of educational sessions were presented including Healthy Building as the first line of defense against infectious disease transmission: Covid-19 and beyond, Selling in the Post-Pandemic Era, UVGI’s Role in the Pandemic: From Niche to Mainstream, an overview of NAFA’s Commercial Offices Best Practice and Guidelines for Air Filtration and Meeting the Challenge of Air Filter Supplies which was a panel discussion on a very hot topic. NAFA Position Statement on ASHRAE's Epidemic Task Force (ETF) Core Recommendations for Reducing Infectious Aerosol Exposure The National Air Filtration Association (NAFA) is pleased to offer its’ support and feedback to ASHRAE’s Epidemic Task Force (ETF) for the outstanding document “Core Recommendations for Reducing Airborne Infectious Aerosol Exposure”. To complete this document in such a short period of time, and for it to be so universally accepted and referenced by the HVAC industry, governments, and all the major health agencies, such as, WHO, CDC, and EPA, is an extraordinary feat.

Much of the guidance offered in the document follows existing ASHRAE guidelines and standards such as 62.1-2019 “Ventilation for acceptable Indoor Air Quality”. NAFA endorses the ETF’s recommendation for the significant increase in filter efficiency from a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) 8 to a MERV 13 or higher. NAFA is cognizant of the increased pathogen capture performance features of MERV 13 and higher filters and the ETF’s recommendation is consistent with NAFA’s “Guidelines for Commercial Office Spaces” published in 2012.

NAFA’s focus is Education, Expertise, and Certification in the field of air filtration. The following are key factors that should be considered when upgrading filter efficiency from MERV 8 to MERV 13 as we believe they will complement the overall ASHRAE document.

•

Filter system efficiency is not the same as filter efficiency. The two equally important elements in filter performance are the filter itself and the holding apparatus/framework that the filter sits in. As you increase in filter efficiency the importance of a properly sealed filter and holding apparatus/framework is critical and must be addressed. High efficiency filters will not perform as intended if they are not sealed properly and air allowed to bypass them. Dr. Jeffrey Siegel’s 2005 research revealed that a 1 mm gap can lower the MERV rating on a high efficiency filter by one point and a larger 10 mm gap can reduce a MERV 15 filter to a MERV 8.1 The goal must be filter system efficiency not just the filter’s MERV rated efficiency. We recommend having a trained certified air filtration specialist/IAQ technician verify that your filter efficiency and filter system efficiency are one and the same.

•

Filter service must be handled with care and attention. Selection and servicing high efficiency HVAC filters is a specialty task that should only be performed by industry trained technicians. Filter service technicians should have extensive knowledge of all safety protocols, especially the use of the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as well as the understanding of filter disposal in a safe manner. Since it is accepted that the SARS CoV-2 virus is airborne, and published studies have shown that air filters can capture this virus, we can rationally assume that the filters may be contaminated with viable SARS CoV-2 virus. Having a NAFA certified technician, or industry trained in-house staff, reduces potential risk and liability.

NAFA offers the NAFA Certified Technician (NCT) program to educate your service personnel. NAFA has also published The Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of Air Filtration Systems as a guide for filter servicing protocols. Lessons learned not to be repeated. The Covid-19 pandemic has made us aware of the critical importance of mechanical systems in providing healthy air in our most vulnerable facilities, such as, Schools and Continuing Care. Capital Infrastructure improvements are planning the upgrading and replacement of an unprecedented number of HVAC equipment for these and other facilities. Merely replacing these systems with newer versions is not enough. During this crisis there have been concerns about upgrading to a higher MERV filter due to an increase in pressure drop, an increase in energy, and reduced airflow. At NAFA we understand these concerns and recognize that it is not always possible to upgrade filters in existing systems. Addressing these concerns in new systems requires a conscious effort to improve air filtration specifications at the design stage. New air filter technologies, oversizing filter banks, and increasing the available depth of filter banks can safely address these concerns. Adding a second filter bank that can be mobilized for an extraordinary incident enables a facility to be proactively prepared for the next pandemic or wildfire smoke event. If we start today, we will not be having this same conversation 20 years from now.

•

Supplemental Air Cleaning Technologies. The SARS CoVid-19 pandemic has increased the number of companies selling “new technology” air cleaning products that purport to remove, destroy, or inactivate the SARS CoV-2 virus. It is NAFA’s position that any technology making such claims be supported by third party, peer reviewed, performance documentation. If the decision is made to purchase one of these technologies be confident that you understand the benefits, potential risks, and impact on building occupants of any new air cleaning technology. A NAFA Certified Air Filtration Specialist (CAFS) can assist you with your options and help you make an informed decision based on your budget and goals.

Ventilation, Filtration, and Indoor Air Quality have been three of the most important organizational health and safety issues discussed since the pandemic began. This heightened awareness will not diminish but will become the new benchmark for indoor environments. Some of these strategies discussed may increase energy consumption and capital spending, however, the benefits will be a healthier and more productive environment for all who live, visit, work, and play in these facilities.

Testing, Adjusting and Balancing Bureau only ANSI-accredited program in study The University of California, Davis Western Cooling Efficiency Center released a study, “Testing, Adjusting and Balancing HVAC Systems: An Overview of Certification Agencies,” favorably positioning the Testing, Adjusting and Balancing Bureau (TABB) as a certifying agency for testing, adjusting and balancing (TAB). The study, written by Fredrick Meyers and Theresa Pistochini, stated, “Competence in the subject matter is demonstrated through the ANSI-accredited certification process.”

Conducting proper TAB as part of the commissioning process benefits the building owner and occupants by ensuring the criteria specified in the building design are met. Beyond comfort, a balanced HVAC system will use less energy and provide better indoor air quality and enhanced ventilation rates, particularly important in helping to keep occupants healthy and productive in today’s COVID-19 environment.

The International Certification Bureau/Testing, Adjusting and Balancing Bureau (ICB/TABB), a program of the National Energy Management Institute Committee (NEMIC), is the first of its kind to gain ANSI accreditation for certification in testing, adjusting and balancing and the HVAC fire life safety industry. Clearwater was incorporated in 1891, and its popularity as a vacation destination grew after railroad magnate Henry B. Plant built a sprawling Victorian resort in 1897. During World War II, Clearwater became a major training base for US troops destined for Europe and the Pacific.

While the COVID-19 pandemic caught many by surprise, commercial real estate professionals are on track to emerge more informed and better prepared for the inevitable next time. Of course, we have traveled that path from unknowing before, awakened, as it were, from blissful ignorance.

In the weeks and months following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, for instance, the business community and the United States populace in general remained on high alert. Security screening appeared in lobbies and National Guard professionals began protecting transit hubs. Today, such measures, once so strikingly out of the norm, are now much like white noise. We have all grown used to taking our shoes off as we board airplanes or flashing our photo IDs in building lobbies.

Now, with the end of the COVID-19 pandemic in sight, the same dynamic is likely to take place with the protections we have put in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. But how exactly will this next New Normal take shape? Will we be social distancing in our offices this time next year? Elbow-bumping rather than shaking hands? And, even if conference rooms are sanitized between each use, how many of us will be comfortable using them? We know now that there is a direct, if hidden, interplay between place, culture and well-being, a relationship thoroughly probed in Deep Dive No. 2: Tenant Culture and the Psychology of the Return.

In addition, more than ever, it is clear that the topic of wellness cannot be fully addressed without also discussing sustainability. The intersection between the two had been considered long before we upgraded our minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) filtration to COVID-resistant levels.

Now, the concepts are undeniably forged together. Likewise, responsible investing was already an attractive strategy for commercial building owners and— therefore—corporate tenants trying to prove their mission statements prior to the pandemic. And as Deep Dive No. 2 outlined, corporate responsibility translates into hiring and retention— so you can bet that idea is a late-stage pandemic favorite, too.

Needless to say, at this early stage of recovery in the United States— before most of the world has been fully vaccinated, with countries still fighting to contain new outbreaks and while we ponder the potential impacts of variant strains of the virus—some speculation (albeit educated speculation) is due to enter the conversation.

The Cicadas Are Coming Install the PreVent® System for Ultimate HVAC Equipment Protection BACKGROUND

Since 2004, The Great Eastern Brood of periodic cicadas has been maturing underground. Also known as Brood X, these 17-year insects are emerging by the billions—or tens of billions—across a broad range of northeastern states in 2021. Marina Centeno-Cassin US Representative, ADS Laminaire/Flow Air Filters How did you get your start in the filter industry?

I was hired by ADS to start the business in the USA. I moved in the USA in 2009 and started with analyzing the market for our products.

We concluded after finding our 1st client in 2009 that there was a market for us. Since, I have been working for ADS and managing our US office.

Marina Centeno-Cassin, is the US manager of ADS Air Filters, distribution branch of the French-Israeli companies ADS Laminaire and Flow Air Filters. She grew up in France and received a Master degree in International business at INSEEC in Paris. She moved to the USA in 2009 to establish ADS business in the United States and Canada.

She has been married with Luis Centeno since 2014 and cofounded with him two gyms in Chicago “Fit-Results”. Luis and Marina have two little girls : Margot, 4 and Louanne, 2.

How do you motivate your employees?

Today I am working alone but have daily interaction with our French and Israeli staff. ADS is a family-oriented company which is making it a very friendly working environment. Because of the structure, our staff is free to take initiatives and talk freely with all managers whatever their position is.

We give opportunities to all employees to grow in the company.

Did you have a business mentor and if so, who is/was it?

I work hand to hand with Bernard Bijaoui who is one of the owners of the company. He passed on a large part of his experience to me, leaving me the choice of personal initiatives.

In the last 10 years, I have met a lot of inspiring people in our industry who thought me a lot too.

What’s the best piece of business advice anyone ever gave you?

One of the best advices was “to not be shy”.

Finding the confidence when I started at first in the USA wasn’t easy. The company I represented was unknown in the US and I was starting in this business. Finding my voice and being proud to represent my company, enable me to put my print in this industry. I think this advice is important for any type of industry. Being humble is necessary but not shy is the key for success.

What is the most challenging aspect in the running your company?

The most challenging aspect is to establish a real partnership with our distributors, based on full confidence.

Our partners must be sure of the quality of our products and technical support.

What do you think is the biggest challenge the air filtration industry currently faces?

The many competitors who will sell filters on price and not on quality. When you produce quality product by are smaller to the biggest actor so you can’t sell your product for the same price but due to the work in term of quality, you can’t produce for a very low, low price.

Finding the balance is not always easy.

Do you have any words of wisdom for up and coming filter professionals?

Professional groups like NAFA are really important to create your network.

Try to be part of many of those groups as possible.

How has your company benefited from NAFA membership?

Thanks to NAFA we were able to meet the right actors of the filter industry in the USA when we started in 2009. We build a strong network thanks to the association. We did it! We held our first live meeting since the beginning of the pandemic, and it was wonderful to see everyone in person again!

In addition to the over 130 people that made the trip to Scottsdale, we also had 80 people that were able to join us virtually in our firsttime hybrid meeting offering. While we know most people would have preferred to be at the meeting in person, it was exciting to be able to provide an option for those unable to join us so they could take part in the high-quality educational content provided at the meeting.

For those that joined us live, thank you for following the guidelines we had in place to ensure that we were able to make the meeting safe for all attendees. I feel confident in saying that everyone was thrilled to spend time with their friends and peers in a live meeting setting again.

By the time Air Media hits your desks, another offering of the NAFA’s NCT (NAFA Certified Technician) Level II (BIBO) training and certification will have taken place in the Chicago area. Thanks to Filter Services, Inc. for hosting us again, to Glen Moore, NCT II, Containment Nuclear Segment Manager, Camfil USA, Inc for instructing and to AAF Flanders for providing the Band-It Tool Kits.

Let’s talk about what’s on the horizon for NAFA. Plans are underway for the 2021 Annual Convention being held November 2-4 at the Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach. Florida will be the perfect backdrop as we gather again for education, networking, the opportunity to learn from each other and, of course, a little golf to benefit the NAFA Foundation.

When the ability to meet in person was paused, NAFA started offering webinars to keep members engaged and informed. We will continue to offer these periodically throughout the year and encourage you to not only attend, but to let us know if there is a topic you want to hear about or would be interested in presenting.

I also encourage you to contact me or Terry Driscoll if you have an interest in contributing educational content to Air Media. It’s a great way to share your knowledge, earn credits towards your certification, and make your mark in the NAFA community.

Also on the horizon is the 2022 AHR Expo is scheduled for January 31 – February 2 in Las Vegas, Nevada. We will again be exhibiting, offering a session, and running certification exams.
