President’s Message

Communication is not a one-way street by Jay Reese, CAFS

Wow! I can’t believe how long it’s been since my last article. It’s been a busy 4 months and so much has happened since our last communication. As everyone emerges from our long winter, I want to take a moment and remind everyone of all that has happened since our last communication. The 2018 AHR Conference was again held in Chicago, IL and as usual, attendance was a record both for the number of exhibitors as well as the number of attendees. NAFA was present with our booth, where we had great participation from our members who volunteered to staff the booth on the 3 days of the trade show. Also, we were able to present hospital guidelines in both English and Spanish to the conference attendees. My thanks to everyone who presented, helped and who volunteered on behalf of NAFA. Remember, volunteering to staff the NAFA booth at AHR helps you to attain your CEU’s for maintaining CAFS and/or NCT accreditation. What a terrific way to benefit both yourself and NAFA! There were a lot of great Technical Presentations, Seminars, and Workshops presented and attended by our members, including the ongoing meetings of SSPC 52.2, for which NAFA has a vote. If you haven’t been to an AHR Annual Meeting, be sure to put it on your list of to-dos’, since it’s a valuable way to stay up to date on new products and programs in the industry. Of course, the feature program of the spring was the 2018 Technical Seminar, which was held at the Westin Crown Center in Kansas City, MO on April 4-6. This was a fantastic venue for our meeting, with great attendance by NAFA members and record tying level of sponsorship. As always, we can’t thank our sponsors enough for their generosity, which allows us to bring in great speakers and present the strong programs

that we have. This year, we tried several new ways of running our meeting, which based on early feedback, was well received. From setting up the meeting room in crescent rounds, which helped to promote interaction between attendees, to longer breaks in a separate room, which allowed greater interaction with the members and our sponsors, we listened to what you communicated to us. Our opening Keynote Speaker, Mr. Jim Pancero, spoke about how “We need Arsonists…Not Firefighters!” This was a great presentation that I think touched on a lot of points for all of us. Additionally, Jim conducted an optional sales training program titled “You Can Always Sell More – Are You Ready to Get Even Better?” We had about 60 people pre-register for the optional sales training, but had over 100 people attend, which is a testament to the value that was delivered. The conference was a mix of presenters who spoke on topics including Energy Efficiency and Air Filtration, The IOT (Internet of Things) for IAQ, and Filtration Metrics. We also had two excellent panel discussions on Filter Distribution and Service and one on Indoor Air Quality Procedures, as well as a presentation on how to make the most of your NAFA membership using the NAFA Guidelines. This year, for the first time we moved our committee meetings to coincide with the breakfast buffet on Wednesday and Thursday. While some folks who attended chose to come directly to the meetings from their late-night adventures, overall attendance and participation in the committees was significantly higher than in the past, and was well received. The 4 committees all have full agendas and continue to accomplish a lot of great things for the organization. If you haven’t signed up Continued on page 24

TM

The core of success by Dan Barnett CEO/Owner, The Primavera Company

Two thousand years ago, a famous Chinese general wrote a book on strategy call the Art of War. To this day it is considered to be one of the greatest books ever written on strategy. And this is what Sun Tzu said “Weak leadership will destroy the finest strategy – while forceful execution of even a poor strategy can often bring victory.” So you have the guru of strategy saying – it is execution that trumps! I agree. I am all about strategic planning but I am also about strategic doing. How do we get ourselves and our organization to do the things that matter most – week in and week out in our business. This is a huge challenge we all face as leaders. Here is what happens. You show up for work on a Monday morning all intent on working on some very important project. By 9 am you are “up to your ears” in alligators. And you work on those alligators all day long. This can go on for days, weeks or months and one day you look back on that important project and realize you never made much progress on it. Make or BreakTM Execution is about making sure you and your people are doing those things that matter most – and not spending so much time dealing with alligators. The best leaders I have worked with have both a clear vision and also an eye for the operating detail that will “Make or Break” their vision. A company with no vision will spin its wheels. And yet even the best vision will go nowhere in the face of poor execution. The big struggle for most leaders is how to do both. How do you actively lead your organization to insure superb execution without being consumed by the details and the urgent “alligators” you face daily? Some leaders can do both. It is what I call, “No vision too distant – No detail too small”. It is powerful combination in a leader. Make or Break Execution helps you bring that combination to your organization.

4

Vision is important. One of the most fundamental things we do as leaders is to “describe the future.” People look to leaders to learn where the business is going. What are we trying to accomplish? How are we making the world a better place? Some leaders are really good at doing this. They can describe the future in a way that is clear and compelling. Their people say “that is cool”. I’d like to be a part of that. I think a lot of leaders are pretty good at vision. What you rarely see in the same person is someone who can also say “this is what we have to do to get there”. When you see that combination in a leader – clarity of where you are going and also clarity on what needs to get done to get there – it raises the “energy level” and the “level of play” for several reasons. First, people like to know where they are going. And when you make that clear to them, it raises the energy level. But they also figure that if you know what needs to get done to get there, you are going to make some pretty good decisions – about resources. You will also recognize when a good job is done. And that tends to raise the level of play in an organization. Make or Break Execution is about bringing that combination to your organization: clarity of where you are going (your vision) and also clarity about what needs to get done to get there (your Make or Break). I think all good performance starts with clear direction. I make the argument that every company (and every department of a company) has a Make or Break. The Make or Break is “the one thing that must be done extraordinarily well throughout your organization for you to achieve your vision”. You have to do many things well in a company but what is the one thing that will most cause you to get to your vision (your Make or Break). If you can figure that out and then make sure that is happening at the pace it needs to every week in your organization, it will drive you toward your vision.

NAFA Air Media

A good example of the concept is Apple®. They are arguably the most successful company of the last decade. Steve Jobs made it very clear what mattered most in that company. He said at Apple it was “design”. He personally led “design” himself. There are some interesting stories about his leadership of design. For example he believed that buttons are a clunky design element, that they dehumanized technology. He always tried to eliminate buttons from Apple products. Jobs made sure design infused everything at Apple Look at the design of Apple stores – completely different than any other store. They operate differently – no cash registers. The design of the IPod® changed the personal entertainment industry forever. In fact it transformed the music industry, the video industry and the game industry. An IPod holds thousands of songs and you can find the one song you are looking for in a nanosecond – and it has almost no buttons. The IPhone® was designed to turn cell phones into complete computers. You can do more on an IPhone these days than on most computers – there are over 650,000 apps for IPhones. And some can do amazing things. My Tom-Tom® app gives better “turn by turn” GPS directions than the GPS built into my 2012 car. The IPhone has changed the world we live in (almost everybody on this planet has a cell phone – as cell phones become complete computers which is rapidly happening – it changes the world in amazing ways). The packing at Apple is amazing the way it is designed. People will save their original packing forever. Even the design of the bags they put you purchase in is cool. Ever see kids with Apple backpacks. That was the bag they put their purchase in. What has happened at Apple is that design infuses everything. The reason for this is because Steve Jobs made it very clear that design is what matters most at Apple. So he had thousands of people in every part of that company working hard to do great design. He led it himself. And he literally changed the world by doing this. I encourage you to bring you Make or Break to your organization and make it clear that this is the thing that matters most. You will be amazed by what your team will do.

www.nafahq.org

How do you figure out what your Make or Break is? It starts with your vision. Remember your Make or Break is the one thing that will most cause your vision to happen. So start by creating a clear vision. The key question in developing you vision is to ask “what do you want your company (or your department) to look like a few years down the road?” I encourage you to involve your people in coming up with both your vision and your Make or Break. It will be easier to implement them if your people had a role their development. It is your people who create your success. So the more clear and specific you make your vision for them, the better. I encourage you to make your vision measurable. If you can measure it, you can show progress toward it. It is a great way to build energy and confidence with you team. Ask yourself if your vision would make you happy if you achieved it. If the answer is yes you will be committed to it. And your people will know it – it will show through. Also keep your vision short. If it is short, people can remember what it is. I see many paragraph long visions but invariably nobody in those companies knows what the vision is. If your vision is short people will remember what it is. Once your vision is clear you can go to work on your Make or Break. I encourage you to work with your people to develop your Make or Break. First look at your vision and ask the question, “What is the one thing that must be done extraordinarily well to achieve this”. Ask a series of questions to identify whether it is a weakness you must fix or a strength you can leverage. In the case of Steve Jobs and Apple, in 1983 Jobs had been forced out of the company (fired) by his board. They brought in new management. The new CEO was John Sculley who was recognized as a marketing genius. He did a tremendous amount of marketing while he was CEO and it was great marketing. But it was not what Apple needed. After 10 years, Jobs was rehired because Apple was on the verge of bankruptcy. Jobs came back and said to his team that Apple had lost their way. What mattered most was design. And he refocused the team on design.

5

Soon came the new IMac® which turned around their computer business, then the IPod, the IPhone, and the IPad. By focusing on design, Apple became the most successful company of its day. Apple illustrates the power of identifying what matters most and then getting your team to focus on getting that done all the time. Once we know what our Make or Break is, how do we get our team to focus on it. How do we get extraordinary execution? I want to talk about four concepts for getting powerful execution. First is your role as a leader. Bring your Make or Make to your organization with clarity and passion. Roll up your sleeves and be a part of it in your organization. I am not talking about micromanaging your people in this area. I am talking about holding people accountable for getting this done. Let them do it, and be sure they know how important it is. Second, build a Value Chain for your Make or Break. A Value Chain is defined as a series of actions that create value. When you put activities into a Value Chain, they become leading indicators of that result. That is because activities always look forward. Your do an activity today, you get a result tomorrow. Figure out which activities cause your Make or Break to happen. Then you can hold people accountable for doing those activities. This actually gets you “facing forward”. The activities you are doing today will cause your Make or Break to happen in the future. Third, hold weekly meetings to be sure everyone is doing the activities that cause your Make or Break to happen. This combination of identifying a clear vision, figuring out what matters most (your Make or Break) and then making sure the activities are happening every week will bring “No vision too distant and no Detail too small” to your company or department. And you will be in the middle of it all - actively linking together people, strategy, and operating detail - doing the real job of an effective leader. You will have the Core of Success. ■

Assessing potential new hires in real life situations by Jeff Van Sant, Franchisee Christian Brothers Automotive

I have been lucky in that I have not had to hire many people in the last several years. My team at the auto repair shop, that I had owned and operated, had tenures ranging from 6 to 13 years. So, as I started a new venture as a franchisee with Christian Brothers Automotive, I prepared by reviewing materials from past training. I compiled my favorite interview questions, including the “Tell me about a time” questions which often proved to be very revealing. I started the hiring process for Service Manager with one of the franchise’s recruiters. Brian explained that the process would be an online video conference with each candidate followed by an Escape Room Event. I didn’t really know what an “escape room” was except for the little I had heard from my daughter and son-in-law who had been to one. Brian said that he had participated in about 5-6 of these to date and that the experience reveals more about the candidates in an hour than asking all of the best behavioral interview questions. I responded with some comment about how it sounded “crazy” but was willing to trust his experience in this. So, after the video conference interviews, we chose the top 4 candidates which were then invited to the escape room event on a Tuesday evening at Escape This! in downtown Madison, Wisconsin. I personally invited each candidate by phone and all accepted. However, the next day one of them withdrew from the process. (He probably thought we were crazy.)

14

On the day of the event, Brian flew into town to participate in person along with me and the 3 remaining job candidates. The plan was that he would be involved but mostly observe and that I should interact with everyone. We all arrived early and met each other for the first time. It seemed rather strange that all the candidates who were seeking the position were visiting casually together. Already personalities were coming out. During the event some things quickly became evident. One candidate was assertive and became somewhat of a leader in the process. Another was fairly quiet and hung back yet still solving important parts of the puzzle. And the third showed that he was a team player by working diligently with the leader. All three had unique behaviors which seemed to reveal their personality strengths. The candidates had all mentioned finding the right fit for them during previous conversations and this event made it easy for me to choose the person that I will be working closest with in my business. I wanted someone with strengths that would complement mine, not be the same as mine and I believe that I found that. Another phone conversation included the next step which was a spousal dinner invitation where an offer was presented and quickly accepted. ■

Jeff and Pam Van Sant are franchise owners of the Christian Brothers Automotive location in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. The Van Sants bring extensive industry experience to Christian Brothers, as they owned and operated a 10-bay full service auto repair business for 24 years in Pella, Iowa. They were drawn to the Madison area for the chance to be near their adult children and families, as well as inspired by the faith-based business model. Christian Brothers Automotive seeks to glorify God by providing ethical and excellent automotive repair service to customers while being a light in the community.

Featured Member Benefit NAFA Guidelines - branded logo product, a new opportunity

As an addition to our already robust list of member benefits, NAFA now offers branded best practice guidelines. This is our way of allowing our members to show their employees and clients that they belong to the industry's leading association and follow the industry's best practices while conducting their work. "We are really excited about the opportunity to be able to add our brand to NAFA's Best Practice Guidelines. To us, the benefits of the NAFA Guidelines are two-fold. Education for our customers and education for our employees. With this increased knowledge we are more equipped to provide the right clean air solution for the end user, which is always of utmost importance to any organization in the air filtration industry," said Roberta MacGillivray, President at B.G.E. Service & Supply Ltd. If you are interested in placing your organization’s logo on the NAFA Guidelines, please visit: www.bit.ly/NAFABestPracticeGuidelines. The cost to participate is $100 and you can choose just one or all nine guidelines. A secured pdf will be delivered to you to distribute to your customers and employees.

Front and back of sample guideline with logo

NAFA publishes this series of air filtration guidelines based on standards that international HVAC/R organizations promote and typically become part of a national building code, but we take it one step further. We also recommend and incorporate the highest level of air filtration standards for specific applications.

President’s Message Continued from page 2 or participated in a committee, be sure to do so, I know you’ll find it valuable for both yourself and your customers. This year, rather than hold our NAFA Foundation Golf event at a local golf course, we elected to have it at Topgolf TM, which if you haven’t been before, I highly recommend. We had over 100 people participate in the event, which helped to raise money for our scholarship program and research platforms in the industry. Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a new program, which was our Young Professionals Reception, hosted by Trey Fly. The reception, which had over 50 Young NAFA Professionals attend, provided an opportunity for our next generation of NAFA leaders to mix and become more familiar with how to become more involved in our organization. It was so popular that I even saw attendees who were “young at heart”, if not actually still considered young! In my previous President’s Message from the Winter 2018 Air Media, I spoke about the general theme of Participation and Communication for 2018. The idea of generating a constant stream of communication within our organization is critical to the success and growth of NAFA. However, it’s not a one-way street. We look for and expect feedback from everyone on what is needed to help this organization and industry to be successful. That’s why we ended this years meeting with an open session, hosted by our President Elect, Trey Fly, discussing the biggest takeaways and upcoming opportunities for future Seminars. The session generated a lot of great feedback and ideas, which we

hope to be able to implement in future meetings. On behalf of our membership, thank you for your involvement and feedback, we listen and will work to improve what we deliver to you. Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t remember to thank our Executive Officers, Board of Directors, Committee Chairs, members and everyone else who gets involved in making NAFA the great organization that it is today. Thank you for your participation. Also, there are several industry events coming up including the ASHRAE Summer Meeting in Houston, TX June 23-27, BOMA Conference in San Antonio, TX June 23-26, ASHE Conference in Seattle, WA on July 15-18, and the ISIAQ Conference at Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA on July 22-27. It’s going to be a busy summer! Remember to mark your calendar for the Annual Convention to be held September 25-27 at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino in Lake Tahoe, NV. We already have most of the presenters signed up and based on the early feedback, looks like it’s going to be an outstanding program. In the meantime, have a great summer and I look forward to hearing from everyone. ■

Jay Reese NAFA President

NAFA Clean Air Award program is open The Clean Air Award is presented each year to the building owners and managers who take steps to significantly improve the quality of their indoor air by increasing the level or efficiency of their HVAC air filtration system in 10 specific categories. Candidates are nominated for the award by both NAFA members and members of the facility management community, and must submit detailed and specific steps taken toward cleaning the indoor environment through “best air filtration practices” and system hygiene. A NAFA Certified Air Filter Specialist confirms these improvements. Nominees are judged

by the NAFA Clean Air Award Committee and each recipient receives a custom-designed award, building signage and recognition for their efforts. Award-winning buildings must maintain IAQ diligence and submit inspection data each year in order to maintain the NAFA Clean Air Award. To download the Clean Air Award nomination form, visit the NAFA website at: https://www.nafahq.org/nafa-programs/nafaclean-air-award-program/. ■

NAFA Scholarship program is open Each year, NAFA awards three $1,000 scholarships to deserving college attendees. The scholarships, which will be presented at the Annual Convention, honor students who demonstrate outstanding personal and academic characteristics. The scholarship competition is only open to immediate family members of NAFA Active, Associate, Supplemental and Affiliate members in good standing, or family members of an employee of a NAFA member firm.

24

The NAFA Scholarships help make the dream of a college education a reality for their winners. We encourage all NAFA members to make this employee benefit available to your company people and become involved in this worthwhile effort. To download the scholarship application, visit the NAFA website at: https://www.nafahq.org/nafa-programs/nafa-scholarshipprogram/. ■

Four tips for controlling your inbound freight costs by Chelsea Mitchell, Senior Manager – Brand Marketing & Corporate Communications Roadrunner Transportation Systems

It’s 2018 and we are in the middle of a capacity crunch. With more loads than drivers currently on the road, now is the time to examine your inbound freight management and assess whether you are effectively managing your supply chain. To help you re-evaluate your supply chain activities, here are four tips to help you manage your inbound freight costs:

Tip One: Clearly understand shipping instructions and payment responsibility prior to submitting a purchase order

Make sure all instructions and payment responsibility have been properly negotiated and submitted before creating your purchase order. By clearly communicating all agreedupon information up front, you and your team will be able to avoid excessive costs and inefficiencies that occur due to miscommunication.

28

Tip Two: Take control of your inbound freight charges

Because the party responsible for freight charges has control over your shipment’s route, you typically want control over shipping, handling and processing fees. There are some vendors that use freight control as an added revenue stream, meaning that you could be paying above fair market rate for that service. Partnering with a 3PL (third party logistics) like Ascent Global Logistics helps you take control of your inbound freight by implementing vendor compliance programs and providing technology to ensure visibility to the best rate, route and mode.

Tip Three: Avoid using “best way” as a shipping instruction Shipping freight requires several complexities such as economy, delivery time and risk of damage. The “best way” usually is the most inexpensive, which does not necessarily mean greatest value when it comes to delivery of your freight on time and intact.

Tip Four: Place shipments with your vendor with plenty of load time

Planning ahead will allow you to save time and money on your shipments. High traffic, weather and breakdowns can wreak havoc on your shipments and your wallet, particularly when everyone is trying to ship at the end of the month.

How can I use these tips to improve my supply chain?

Ascent Global Logistics is always here to answer any further questions you may have about effectively managing your inbound freight costs. Please contact us today or speak directly to your Ascent Global Logistics representative. Also, if you have not done so already, please feel free to subscribe to our weekly external newsletter, CLIFF NOTES by visiting Ascent Global Logistics at www.ascentgl.com. ■

Keeping It Cool: Why Proper Air Intake Is Crucial for Data Centers Everyone knows data centers are massive—the biggest ones cover more than a million square feet. In the U.S. alone, data centers use more energy than 6.4 million average American homes do. And half of all that data center electricity goes toward cooling their IT equipment. In other words, keeping data centers cool is a lot of work, and can cost a lot of money. It’s vitally important, however, because hotter temperatures reduce computer life and hamper performance. But just as crucial as having cool air, is having clean air. Dirty air means dirty equipment—the machines have to then work harder, they break down faster and they require increased maintenance costs. Let’s take a look at how proper air temperature and quality can be maintained, and the challenges data centers must rise above

Keeping It Cool Not only can computer equipment heat up in a hurry, but most of the largest data centers are located in hot or temperate climates. So vast amounts of energy are needed to keep them cool. Unfortunately, many centers set a thermostat, occasionally change the HVAC filters, and call it a day. They don’t pay attention to the proper dispersion of the cooling air. This can leave machinecrippling hot spots in the facility. Adding additional cooling equipment or vents can eliminate these troubling areas, but that isn’t always practical or cost-effective. Other strategies include adding blanking panels to cover unused spaces and thus redirecting the air flow, repositioning racks and equipment that may be inhibiting air flow and creating the hot spots, and redistributing highdensity servers so they are spread out and not congregated in one area.

concern in areas with high pollution levels, both indoor and outdoor. Such contaminants cause corrosion on circuitry including circuit boards, especially in older machines, as well as in solder joints and conductive passageways. According to a report published on the collaborative research site ResearchGate, contaminants can include “sulfur and nitrogen oxides (SOx, NOx), hydrogen sulfide (HS), ozone (O), chlorine (Cl), diesel particulate matter (DPM), and fine and ultrafine particulate matter (PM, PM) generated from motor vehicle exhaust.” Impure air quality also can be detrimental to the health of the data center’s staff. High quality, commercial air filters for particulate matter and gaseous contaminant removal can make a world of difference.

Outside In One area that is often ignored with air intake management is the environmental damage that can face outside systems, such as rooftop cooling towers and air handling units. Outdoor elements, like dust, hail, and cottonwood seeds cause airflow obstructions in the fins and coils that lead to reduced cooling and costly damage repairs. Cottonwood getting sucked into 800-ton cooling towers may need costly cleaning, chemicals and system downtime. Airborne hail bending and denting delicate fins and coils lead to increased run time and shortened equipment lifespan.

Proper Air Intake Matters The total cost of dirty and hot air is unpredictable, and potentially high. But maintaining a clean, cool environment pays for itself with equipment longevity, reduced maintenance costs and better computer performance. Fortunately, Permatron can help you meet the air quality and air intake needs of your customers, from commercial panel air filters to our proprietary PreVent® System or HailStop® hail guard. Keep it clean—and cool—with Permatron.

… And Keeping It Clean Equipment in a well-cooled data center may still be at risk from inadequate air quality. This is a particular

Did you have a business mentor and if so, who is/was it? I have had many mentors along the way, including my dad and the senior management team that came before me. I also benefit from connecting with peers in the NAFA membership to share ideas. I belong to Young President’s Organization which creates a non-competitive forum for entrepreneurs and business executives to share best practices and challenges in their businesses. I seek, whenever possible, to reach out to business leaders in my community to engage and have them challenge me on my business. I also benefit by being a mentor. I provide mentorship through my alumni at the University of Alberta to start-up entrepreneurs. It’s amazing how much I get in return from working with fresh entrepreneurs. What’s the best piece of business advice anyone ever gave you? “It’s a marathon not a sprint.” You need to be focused on the end in mind but nothing is quick. Patience and perseverance will prevail. What is the most challenging aspect of running a filter company? We talked about this at the last NAFA Technical Seminar. The most challenging aspect about the filter company and also the most rewarding

aspect is people. It’s all about the people. They are the essence of everything we do and if you talk to our customers it’s the aspect that they value the most. Providing a clear direction for full alignment is imperative. What do you think is the biggest challenge the air filtration industry currently faces? Competition is fierce. It’s important that the industry doesn’t lose sight of what is really important; making sure our customers have clean air to meet their ever changing needs. Do you have any words of wisdom for up and coming filter professionals? Get involved. NAFA is a great place to start. There is so much knowledge and experience in this industry and NAFA members are always welcoming and willing to provide advice or a helping hand. Get involved in your local associations as well. Associations are always looking for volunteers and you learn so much and make so many strong connections by getting involved. How has your company benefited from NAFA membership? We’ve been involved in NAFA since the 1970’s. We’ve integrated the CAFS, NCT, NCT II, Clean Air Award, NAFA Guide to Air Filtration, IOM Manual, Guidelines and the Technical Seminar and Annual Convention into our regular business processes which has made us a stronger, more informed company for our employees and our customers. ■ B.G.E. Service & Supply (The Filter Shop) is celebrating its 50th year in business later this fall. We are a distributor, manufacturer and service provider of indoor air quality filtration products. We have seven fully stocked, customer service locations across the four Western Canadian provinces and around 200 employees. In the next five years we see a lot of growth in our business and a real focus on helping our customers develop the healthiest indoor environments to meet their needs be it for people, places, processes or equipment.

From the Executive Director by Michelle Czosek, CAE

I’ve read several articles lately that discuss the challenges that employers are facing so far in 2018 and they lead me to think about how associations, especially NAFA, can assist in some of these areas. The challenges I find most interesting and applicable are those related to professional development opportunities for employees and employee engagement. Two things that I feel go hand in hand. As an association professional that touches educational programming every day, I’m a huge proponent of the importance of continuing education for employees at every level and in every industry. I’ve seen employees, provided with an opportunity to learn and grow, flourish as they gain new skills and confidence. Some employers fear that enhancing an individual’s skills, especially in a time when competition for the right people is fierce, will allow them to be more marketable to other employers and they’ll see the worker with enhanced skills walk away to another company. While this is certainly sometimes the case, this can happen at any time – whether professional development opportunities are offered or not. I would argue that, for the most part, employees appreciate when you invest in them and feel more loyalty towards your organization. This assumes that other pieces, such as company culture, pay and chances for advancement are in place as well. Why is this important? All of the impacts of investing in your employees – increased employee engagement and retention, enhanced skills, enthusiasm and company loyalty – can help lead to a stronger bottom line.

In association management circles, we talk about how offering ongoing professional education opportunities is one way to really make a difference for our members. When considering how NAFA provides professional development for members, I see areas where we do well, along with areas for potential future growth. Our Annual Convention and Technical Seminar are our signature in-person events each year and provide a variety of educational sessions from professional presenters and industry experts. Learning comes not only in the form of formal sessions, but learning from peers as we network and share ideas at these face-to-face events. These ideas can then be taken back to the company, shared with others and applied. NAFA’s certification program offers the chance to earn the CAFS, NCT or NCT II designation. In an effort to better serve members, we started an official program for bringing CAFS testing to member locations if you have 5 or more employees interested in taking the exam. We also added a CAFS tutorial via webinar series and will be running the NCT II Bag In/Bag Out training and practical exam as a separate event in the Chicago area this Fall. Our logistics program partner, Ascent Global Logistics, recently provided a complimentary educational webinar, Ship Like a Pro, to help educate members on how to optimize your team’s shipping practices. The NAFA staff and board are always on the look-out for low- and nocost ways to provide information to our members and their staff.

I encourage you to take advantage of the opportunities that NAFA provides to enhance your skills and build your industry knowledge. If you supervise others, let them know that their continued development is important to you, and make sure they know what educational opportunities are available to them. Do you want to read more about how investing in employee professional development and training can pay off for your company? Search in your Internet browser for “investment in employee education pays off” and you’ll see over 26,000,00 results. I didn’t read all of them, but I glanced through a few and not one of them said that continuing education had a single negative impact. Are there additional educational opportunities that NAFA can provide to enhance your membership? Do you have suggestions for educational sessions at the Annual Convention or Technical Seminar? If so, please feel free to contact me. I’d love to discuss what we can do to provide professional development opportunities for you and your organization. I look forward to seeing everyone in Lake Tahoe on September 25-27 for NAFA’s 2018 Annual Convention. ■

Warm regards,
