The Pandemic in Perspective As the COVID-19 pandemic approaches the end of its second year, a number of important lessons are coming into focus. Some are the result of successes and others the consequence of failures. If fully learned, they may help to shape a better future for humanity but the path to a different and better world is fraught with obstacles. This presentation is a personal view of the events of the past two years and their possible impact on the post-pandemic world. The primary focus is the role of indoor environments in transmission of COVID-19 and the part played by science and technology in shaping efforts to mitigate risk. However, the pandemic has social, economic, and political dimensions coupled with issues of science and technology, so these, too, are addressed. A new paradigm for indoor air quality is proposed that integrates sustainability goals for good health and well-being with protection of the environment and recognizes the need for indoor environments that are resilient in response to infectious disease outbreaks and natural disasters.

The History of ASHRAE Standard 52.2 and NAFA By Thomas C. Ottney, CAFS
"The driving force behind this new international MERV test protocol...was NAFA. A group that started out as a small meeting of concerned air filter professionals was able to make a critically impactful mark in an enduring way."
10
Tom Ottney may be an unfamiliar name to some of you, but I was the NAFA President from 1996-1997. While in Toledo to represent Cambridge Air Filter Company I took the opportunity to join ASHRAE to find out how air filter testing standards were managed. One thing I discovered was that the “test dirt” used in the Standard 52-76 was just the dust in the ambient air around the testing lab. The ASHRAE Standard for testing air cleaning devices was in use since 1976.A group of air filter distributors formally met in 1980, determined to join together and solve our mutual complaints against loopholes in the ASHRAE filter test standard. This marked the beginning of the National Air Filtration Association (NAFA). At that first NAFA meeting, most of the filter distributors wanted to write our own, more accurate method of testing filters under the planned NAFA organization. However, since ASHRAE runs on volunteerism, NAFA members could simply join the ASHRAE committees responsible for updating standards. We saw that it was possible to influence the changes NAFA wanted by working within existing ASHRAE procedures and promote a new test standard that better reflected the needs of NAFA members. In 1980, the Board of Directors asked me to represent NAFA on the ASHRAE Technical Committee 2.4 (TC 2.4), as well as the subcommittee for the proposed ASHRAE revision of filter testing Standard 52-1976. Every six months for the next seven years, NAFA was represented at those meetings without fail. I was appointed Chairman of the 47-member committee for the term from 1985-1987. Finally, in 1999, NAFA got the particle size efficiency test standard that we had been fighting for since 1980, ASHRAE introduced Standard 52.2-1999, Method Of Testing General Ventilation Air-Cleaning Devices For Removal Efficiency By Particle Size. This standard established a test procedure for evaluating the performance of air-cleaning devices as a function of particle size and described a method of laboratory testing to measure the performance of general ventilation air cleaning devices.
NAFA Air Media
Today, ASHRAE receives the credit for development of Standard 52.2-1999 method of testing - its name is on the cover of the document, and it provided the funds to have a firm in Research Triangle Park develop the new test standard. The driving force behind this new international MERV test protocol, though, was NAFA. A group that started out as a small meeting of concerned air filter professionals was able to make a critically impactful mark in an enduring way. ASHRAE Standards are reaffirmed or updated on a five-year cycle. NAFA can continue to be the leader for their continuous improvement. Very likely, the 52.2 document will need to be updated and the leadership required to pioneer a future 52.3 document that will certainly come from a NAFA member. ■
In 2008, Tom was inducted into the NAFA Hall of Fame. Unable to attend in person, he sent a letter of acceptance, which you can read below: I am honored that NAFA has chosen me to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Please accept my sincere apology for not being able to attend in person to accept this award. The 1980s were years when NAFA worked to bring the air filter distribution industry together into a cohesive group. A great group of entrepreneurs made NAFA a significant factor to be dealt with. I am proud to have been a part of those times. To all the NAFA members who supported me during those exciting times in the 1980s and 1990s, please accept my belated sincere thanks for making me look good. My special thanks go to the people who were fellow members on the committees involved with the First Edition of the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration, as well as the Certified Air Filtration Specialist program and the Clean Air Award program. Although I had joined ASHRAE in 1963, I did not become active on ASHRAE Air Filter Technical Committees or ASHRAE Air Filter Testing Standards Committees until after NAFA was founded. ASHRAE recognized the importance of our Trade Association by granting us voting membership on these important committees. NAFA's involvement on ASHRAE committees was a major influence on the continuous updating of the Air Filter Test Standards. I was the NAFA representative on ASHRAE committees for 19 years. It took that long to update ASHRAE from Standard 52-76 in 1981 to Standard to 52.1 in 1992, and finally 52.2 in 1999. The updating of standards is a never-ending process. I hope NAFA will continue to be a leader in that effort.
Thomas C. Ottney, CAFS, NAFA PastPresident, graduated in 1954 from General Motors Institute, Flint, Michigan (now known as Kettering University), with a diploma in dealer management. He marred in 1955 and has three girls with medical careers and a son who continues the rep business as Ohio Air Pro. He lives in Oakleaf Village Sylvania Ohio in an independent living apartment, with his wife of 67 years. He was a Manufacturer's Representative with Ottney & Associates, Toledo, Ohio, he started Ohio Air Filter in 1974. As a member and Past President of NAFA, Tom helped create the original NAFA Guide to Air Filtration, now in its 6th edition. In 2008, he was the recipient of the Hall of Fame Award and is a Lifetime Member of NAFA. He was President of Toledo Chapter of ASHRAE in 1970-1971. In retirement he hopes to continue writing opinion articles about the air filtration industry with a historical perspective.

ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force Vice-Chair Delivers “Back to School” Presentation By Healthy Indoors®
On August 12, the Healthy Schools Network hosted a “Back to School” webinar on Energy Savings and Healthy Indoor Air. Dennis Knight, Vice-Chair of ASHRAE’s Epidemic Task Force, and Tracy Washington, Program Manager at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency served as panelists. The webinar was moderated by Pamela Pugh, Vice President of the Michigan State Board of Education. The webinar explored how schools can achieve both energy savings and healthy indoor air. If you were not able to attend the live event, you can view the recording here: https://global.healthyindoors.com/c/school-iaq/ schools-energy-savings-and-healthy-indoors-air Back to school day of action: clean air in every school as COVID resurges As the new school year draws near, and COVID infections are rising in children and young adults, new reports of “longCOVID” in children and youth are posing urgent questions for schools and child care facilities, and for the 20% of the US population using schools every day: parents, students, faculty, and staff nationwide. Questions abound, in part due to a lack of clear and actionable information and support from congress and from health and government leaders at federal, state, and local levels. The White House is leading nationwide efforts to increase COVID vaccination rates; CDC is pushing masking. But when CDC finally acknowledged the virus was airborne in May 2021 a month after the relief bills had passed, a new critical priority emerged that has not been addressed: Clean Indoor Air in Schools and the funding to address it. The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) offers some support but falls far short of what schools and child care facilities need to address decades of poor indoor air. The pending infrastructure bill provides no funding for the US Environmental Protection
16
Agency (EPA) to address indoor air despite EPA’s 25-year history of successes with schools and communities on the topic. Further, the bill has no funds to rebuild schools and no priority on ensuring healthy indoor air/ventilation amid an array of school energy retrofit projects. Indoor Air and Energy Savings do work together, but the protocols must be deliberate, not left to chance. Thus, as the new school year starts, the national Coalition for Healthier Schools, coordinated by Healthy Schools Network, is calling for critical and immediate actions and $75 Million in funding to rapidly expand EPA’s capacity to mount education and technical assistance campaigns on clean indoor environments in the nation’s schools: Clean Air, Clean Water, and Clean and Healthy Products. “Clean air in every school should be a national priority for all k-12 schools and childcare facilities,” says Claire Barnett, executive of the Healthy Schools Network. “No child should suffer a full day of polluted and or cold and flu virus-filled indoor air. Teaching suffers; learning suffers; absences and asthma rise. Children are denied the future they and the nation need.” In the face of COVID’s 4th Wave, and reports of rising COVID cases and long-COVID among children, it is increasingly clear that renewed caution and a back-to-basicsapproach can help reduce the resurgent pandemic. There is nothing more basic to the primary prevention of infections than clean air, clean water, and clean, safe products and places. Children returning to school should always have healthy indoor environments in which to learn. “The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has championed clean air in schools for decades, long before the current pandemic. There is strong evidence that indoor environmental exposure to poor air quality in schools plays a substantial role in triggering allergies and asthma symptoms. Nearly 1 in 13 school-age children has asthma and is a leading
NAFA Air Media
cause of missed school days. We must invest in our schools now. Schools should upgrade ventilation and HVAC systems to both improve the environment for children and teachers with asthma and allergies and reduce the spread of coronavirus. Inadequate ventilation also results in high levels of harmful airborne particulates and carbon dioxide levels. Repairing and refreshing aging buildings should be another top priority for investment,” commented Kenneth Mendez, President and CEO, Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Elisabeth Krautscheid, Managing Director of the national Collaborative for High Performance Schools, agrees about the need to focus on clean indoor air for children at school. “While masks and distancing are important, improving ventilation and airflow in schools is a critical defense against COVID-19. It’s more critical than ever that schools have a plan, and federal/local financial support, to provide clean healthy air for students and staff.” Unfortunately, upgrading school Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems is not getting the support and attention that is needed. Data provided by the federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) in 2020 reported on the national need to update or replace school heating, ventilating, and cooling (HVAC) systems. Research reported last month by Education Week notes that half the nation’s schools have urgent concerns for air conditioning and ventilation. The worst situations are in the poorest communities hardest hit by COVID, and now suffering in high heat. For decades they have had the poorest schools with no ventilation and no resources to repair facilities or provide internet access. “Students and staff deserve to learn and teach in healthy schools with adequate ventilation systems. Proper ventilation is important when it comes to good indoor air quality and reducing the spread of COVID-19. Funding must be authorized at the state and federal level to help achieve these goals.” Heather L. Sorge, Organizer, Healthy Schools Now, NJ Work Environment Council (WEC). Not only are schools not getting the priority recognition and support they need, but unhealthy products and equipment are being sold to desperate
www.nafahq.org
schools in the absence of EPA’s outreach and action. “Parents are concerned about indoor air quality related to what is being introduced into their children’s school buildings to control the virus. We have specific concerns over the use of foggers and electrostatic sprayers which aerosolize disinfectants,” says Veronika Carella, Maryland Children’s Environmental Health Coalition Legislative Director. The applications mist into the air or cover every surface and migrate into the HVAC systems where they are heated and cooled and can contaminate indoor air. Children thus have increased risk of exposures to disinfectants which are EPA registered as anti-microbial pesticides. For example, Maryland and New York laws on safer pest control and on green cleaning do not address disinfectants, putting children and staff at greater risk. Indoor air is not the only issue where the nation is falling short when it comes to protecting school environments. “Every child deserves to have a safe, clean ride to school. However, twenty-five million students in the US are breathing in harmful exhaust each school day while riding on a dirty school bus,” says Jamie Wetz, of Generation 180. “Electric school buses protect children’s health by eliminating tailpipe emissions, and they can also help school districts save an estimated $170,000 in lifetime fuel and maintenance costs per vehicle. We need to provide clean air in every school bus by transitioning the nation’s 480,000 school buses to electric.” US EPA: $75 million clean air in schools needed Time is short to make better decisions for children going to school. With some schools already open and more reopening in the days and weeks ahead, congress and states must do more to invest in children’s safety and future. “We need to make sure schools and communities have the information and assistance they need to improve indoor air and ventilation and to find and use safe products and equipment to clean and disinfect” Barnett adds, “This includes $75 Million in annual funding: $65M for the EPA to conduct national outreach, education, and training on improving Indoor Environmental Quality in Schools and $10M to expand children’s environmental health protections.”
“Over 150 years ago, Horace Mann noted that students would stay away from ‘repulsive, unhealthful schoolhouses,’” reminds Brent Ibata, PhD, JD, MPH, of Florida, a long-time champion for healthy places for all children. “This fall, unless schools can guarantee clean air free of COVID when the school year begins, parents and students will likely stay away in large numbers rather than risk exposure to unhealthy schools that could send home a deadly virus.” Commented indoor air scholar Paula Olsiewski, PhD, Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security/ Bloomberg School of Public Health, “In addition to masks and vaccinations, we can do more to protect our children by improving indoor ventilation.” Funding US EPA to address Indoor Environments and children’s health in the nation’s schools, is championed by US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and a score of other Senators to whom Healthy Schools Network and our many partners are deeply grateful. In a new effort, the Network is thrilled to support a new back to school bill introduced by US Ed Senator Markey (D-MA) and Representatives Bowman (NY-16) and Levin (MI-9) to remediate Toxics in Schools, including PCBs and stores of old, outdated hazardous chemicals in chemistry closets and cabinets. “This is heroic work,” said Barnett. “Schools are filled with unsung heroes from the pandemic year. It is wonderful to see more heroes among elected officials championing the tough work of ensuring healthful learning places for all children.”

2021 NAFA Annual Convention | Clearwater, Florida | November 2 - 4
Join us in Clearwater, Florida! Registration is now open for the 2021 Annual Convention Join us to learn about advanced topics in air filtration and business oriented subjects. Take a break, reconnect and recharge with industry professionals at our annual banquet and reception.
See page 4 for an overview of the program. Go to www.nafahq.org to register. With 35 miles of white-sugar sands, foodie-approved dining options, a world-class arts scene and endless family-friendly fun, there's much to discover along the Gulf Coast. History of Clearwater, Florida Located in Pinellas County, Florida, on Tampa Bay, Clearwater has a long and interesting history going back thousands of years to its original inhabitants, the Tocobaga Indians. Spanish explorers were attracted to the area by the natural mineral springs. In 1528 Panfilo de Narvaez, a Spanish explorer, landed in the area. Hernando de Soto followed in 1539, though de Soto is often credited with the “discovery” of the area. De Soto’s and his men were fascinated by the unspoiled beauty of the area and the mineral springs that the Tocobaga Indians used. Around 1835 the US Army built Fort Harrison to be used as an outpost during the Seminole Wars and during the American Civil War, Union gunboats repeatedly raided the city’s supplies. Clearwater was incorporated in 1891, and its popularity as a vacation destination grew after railroad magnate Henry B. Plant built a sprawling Victorian resort in 1897. During World War II, Clearwater became a major training base for US troops destined for Europe and the Pacific.

NAFA News Case Study: The Mighty Squirrel Brewery
Odor control problem analysis and solution: The steam vent odor control system
The problem The Mighty Squirrel Brewery in Waltham, Massachusetts is in a strip mall. The landlord has asked them to control the odors that come from brewing beer, specifically, the odors coming from the kettle vents when the wort is boiling and the whirlpool vent when it is in operation. The landlords’ biggest complaint is the smell of rotting vegetables. The odors are noticeable up to ¼ mile away. The investigation There is little information that can be found on eliminating the odors caused during beer brewing, but as home brewing and microbrew houses continue to expand in popularity the complaints of odors are easily found online. Industrial Odor Control’s first step was to gather information needed to design a system to solve the customers problem. Next was to determine what the main compounds causing the unpleasant odors are during the boil and whirlpool stages of beer brewing and what we found was that there are two main compounds, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS). H2S has an odor like rotten eggs and DMS has an odor like that of rotting vegetables. DMS and H2S are mixed with steam and water vapors as it exits the kettle vent and the whirlpool vent. Though whirlpooling the wort does not boil the wort, the wort is put into the whirlpool once the boil is completed so its temperature is above
the boiling temperature of both H2S and DMS during much of the process. Both elements have a boiling point of approximately 140° F. The second step was to determine how many gallons per minute is exiting the kettle vent stacks during the boil process. It was found that the air stream is super saturated with water and both kettles combined lost .7 gallons per minute through the vent stacks in the form of steam. Measuring the kettle vent stacks H2S and DMS concentrations, it was found that the H2S level at the kettle vents outlet was found to be between 15 PPM and 22.5 PPM depending on the stage of the boil. The DMS level was found to be more than 15 PPM at both the kettle vents and the whirlpool vent (15 PPM was the maximum concentration our Draeger tubes could read.) The whirlpool kettle vent was also found to have up to 22 PPM of H2S and more than 15 PPM of DMS while it was in use. The biggest challenge was to design a system that can capture the exhaust from the kettles and whirlpool vent stacks, separate enough water so that the relative humidity is less than 99% so that the exhaust can be run through a vapor scrubber. This must be done without creating a vacuum in their vessels. Creating a vacuum will change the amount of water boiled out of the wort which will change their recipe and if the vacuum is large enough it can cause a vessel to collapse inward. Neither of these two scenarios is acceptable. The solution Industrial Odor Control developed a unique vapor scrubber system that required the design of an air admittance tee (patent pending) and an air admittance lateral (patent pending). Both components were integral in achieving the goal of this project. The steam vent extraction and odor control system uses a pressure blower
to move the air through the system. The size of the blower will vary depending on the brewery it is used on. The steam vent odor control system utilizes an air admittance tee on top of each vent stack. The air admittance tee is where the exhaust from the kettle and whirlpool stacks is captured, and outside air is introduced to begin the process lowering the exhaust stream temperature down below the dew point. The dew point is where water vapors can condense allowing the water to be separated from the air stream. The exhaust stream is then brought through our patent pending air admittance lateral where once again outside air can be metered into the stream prior to it entering a cyclonic demister. The cyclonic demister will separate any water that has dropped out of gas phase by getting the exhaust streams temperature below the dew point. The water that has been removed from the exhaust stream is captured and piped to a drain for safe disposal. The exhaust stream leaving the demister was measured at 94% RH, well below the point needed to run it through our vapor scrubber. The exhaust streams next stop is another air admittance lateral, a pressure blower and then a high flow radial scrubber filled with a blended media tailored specifically for high RH air streams of H2S and DMS. If the media has become saturated the air admittance tee located in front of the pressure blower is used to bypass the rest of the system and bring 100% outside air to the vessel which will rapidly purge the water from the filter. The results Measuring the outlet stream of the radial scrubber for H2S and DMS it was found that there is 0 PPM H2S and 0 PPM DMS during the boil and whirlpool stage of the beer brewing process. ■

THE IMPORTANCE OF AIR FILTRATION IN COLD STORAGE FACILITIES BACKGROUND Consumers, and in particular urban millennials and Gen-Xers, are demanding food that is more fresh, local, organic, and convenient. This is not only reflected in the foods found in grocery store aisles, but in those available with online grocery shopping—a rapidly growing market that some research suggests will exceed $100 billion per year in spending by 2022. Delivering fresher groceries takes an intricate logistics model combining inventory, speed and freshness, and which includes a tremendous need for more cold storage facilities. In fact, a recent report estimates cold storage facilities will increase by 50% over the next five years. Cold storage facilities are, essentially, refrigerated warehouses that store items at carefully-controlled cold temperatures. They are most commonly found in states with large populations and strong agriculture. For example, there is nearly 400 million square feet of cold storage in California alone. Cold storage facilities house: • • • • • • • • • •
Perishable food (vegetables, fruit, meat and seafood, dairy products) Flowers and plants Candles Pharmaceuticals/medicine Petro-chemicals Artwork Film Lipstick Cologne High-tech electronics
CHALLENGES While cold storage facilities have been around for a long time, today’s buildings are bigger, and have higher ceilings—up from an average height of 22 feet in the 1960s to 38 feet high in cold storage facilities built today. The larger spaces in cold storage facilities demand greater efficiency in circulating cold air to keep them profitable. Energy costs typically account for at least 15% of cold storage facilities’ operating budgets, so even a small decrease in efficiency can greatly impact costs. Additionally, different products require different storage temperatures. For example, vegetables should be stored at 55°F, dairy products need to be stored just above freezing at 34°F, while meat is stored just below freezing at 28°F. This means cold storage facilities must carefully monitor temperatures throughout the facility, and keep them consistent despite the temperature variances, moisture accumulation, outside temperature changes and unit malfunctions.
Air quality is also important, especially when storing pharmaceuticals or other items faced with stringent regulatory requirements. Keeping HVAC units in prime working condition is the key to cold, clean air in cold storage facilities. Unfortunately, cooling towers, air-cooled chillers, condenser units and HVAC systems are exposed outside and on rooftops where they are constantly at risk from insects, cottonwood, leaves, pollen and even garbage. These particles can build up and settle within the cooling systems, marring cooling performance and greatly reducing the longevity of heat exchangers and coils. For example, the EPA reports that as little as 0.042″ of dirt on condensing coils reduces their efficiency by 21%, and can increase refrigeration energy use by 35%. Cleaning these units regularly is necessary, but can be a challenge due to their difficulty to reach, a lack of convenient water access, employees untrained in HVAC care, and high chemical costs. RESULTS An alternative to nearly constant rooftop unit cleaning at cold storage facilities is the use of air-intake filters, such as high-quality PreVent screens from Permatron. PreVent screens are installed on the outside of cooling equipment where fresh air enters into the system. This keeps debris from reaching the delicate fins, coils and high-efficiency interior filter banks. Also, PreVent screens are custom made to accommodate pipes or electrical cutouts, and fit any shape and frame size. They can be secured simply and quickly with our patented MagnaMount® earth magnets. Plus, Permatron delivers fast turnaround and a five-year warranty on all PreVent filter screens. How much your customers might save by using PreVent air intake screens will depend on the size of their cooling units and how many units there are, but a handy calculator tool, located on our website, can help add up the savings. Whether you service cold storage facilities or anywhere temperature and air quality is important, rely on PreVent to prevent problems.
SIMPLY calculate your savings. Control costs and airborne debris with the PreVent system. To add up your savings, visit permatron.com/calculator

Executive Profile
Lawrence J. Clark, CIAQP, CAFS President, Clark Air Systems, Inc. How do you motivate your employees? We regularly allow our employees to participate in the financial success of our business. We just celebrated Susan Stiffler’s 25th year with the company with a company-family picnic. Beyond that, we operate as a results-based work environment with flexible hours, and a healthy benefits package. Finally, we educate that a happy customer is at the basis of our success, and in our small business, every employee has a hand in customer satisfaction. What’s the best piece of business advice anyone ever gave you? “Mr. Clark: You are not a basketball player. Get your butt out of that gym and report to wrestling practice” - Coach Richard Dechowitz – 1975. Larry grew up in Elma, New York (near Buffalo – go Bills!) and received is BA in Engineering at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. He served in the U.S. Navy as Naval Flight Officer in the E-2C Aircraft from 1984-92. Larry just celebrated 37 years of marriage with his wife, Shelly and they have one daughter Lauren and one son Andrew. In his free time, Larry still runs 3-4 miles, 3 days a week, kayaks and is dog daddy to Henry and dog grandpa to Jerry, Bowie, and Golf.
“I gained a lot of knowledge from my counterparts in NAFA, and from Air Media Magazine and the Conferences. Clark Air continues to network with like-minded filter people across the country, mostly met through NAFA resources. We also got several of our salespeople CAFS certified which helps us serve our customer better..”
34
“You can accomplish anything you set your mind to…” - Donald L. Clark – repeatedly over the years. What is the most challenging aspect in the running your company? Those challenges have changed over time, depending on the year -- in 2001 it was: Maintaining our customers in light of sweltering competitive heat, in 2011 it was: Holding the family together in order to weather internal struggles, and in 2021 it is: Holding our supplier base accountable to getting back to a product delivery routine that our customers have grown accustomed to. Did you have a business mentor and if so, who is/was it? Paul Wood or Camillus, NY, was my first District Manager at Ashland Chemical. From the first day in technical sales, he put a lot of energy into training me and motivating me. Several of the daily habits and disciplines I still use today, such as the Franklin Planner, strategic selling, and begin with the end in mind. What do you think is the biggest challenge the air filtration industry currently faces? I think the industry has a real opportunity to start walking away from air filters that really do not work well in many situations. The customer base is, right now, sitting up and listening to us. We can squander that attention by trying to sell a product that is, for example ‘One MERV Higher than the other guy’ or we can realize that cardboard-framed two-inch filters really don’t serve everybody well and drive our customers to set new standards.
Maybe they need deeper filters, fail-proof filters, filters that meet higher operational goals, or filters that cost less because of their long operational life and low energy cost. Maybe the air handler manufacturers need to put more attention to the filter rack choices, so when the next airborne pandemic hits, the units are easily upgraded to higher and higher efficiencies. Do you have any words of wisdom for up and coming filter professionals? The world of quality air is your oyster. Study filtration and air quality from multiple different sources – Like NAFA, ASHRAE Studies, use several different manufacturers for information, and don’t swallow the sales pitches yourselves. Understand the truth behind the marketing. And, finally, open the filter service door at the END-OF-LIFE and see what the filter you sold looks like and how it is performing. Use a trained eye to really evaluate what is happening. ■ Clark Air Systems was founded by Donald L. Clark in 1975 as Clark Air Conditioning Systems, Inc. The Company is located in Buffalo/ Rochester/Syracuse New York area and is currently owned by brothers Christopher, David, and Lawrence Clark. From the Executive Director by Michelle Czosek, CAE
It’s hard to believe that at this time last year the NAFA Board of Directors had made the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 Annual Convention in Clearwater Beach. Now here we are gearing up for our first in-person annual convention since 2019 – time flies! And, what an event it will be. We have a great line-up of presenters, and we’re looking forward to welcoming our opening keynote presenter Bill Bahnfleth, Ph.D., P.E., Professor of Architectural Engineering at Pennsylvania State University and chair of ASHRAE’s Epidemic Task Force. Highlights of the program are available at the beginning of this issue with registration and full program available on our website at www.nafahq. org/2021-annual-convention. The Annual Convention also offers testing for both the Certified Air Filter Specialist (CAFS) and NAFA Certified Technician Level I (NCT) designations. The NAFA Certified Technician Level II designation training and testing is offered at least once a year and is taken in person only. The training was offered this summer in the Chicago area, and we are currently looking to offer an option on the east coast in 2022. We are pleased to offer a virtual alternative for those who choose not to travel to Clearwater Beach. We feel it’s important to bring education to you at a time when some cannot travel or do not feel comfortable being in larger groups of people.

Turning to the NAFA Foundation, three $1,000 scholarships have been awarded to deserving students that are in the NAFA family. They will be officially recognized at the annual convention. The Foundation is pleased to be able to provide these scholarships annually, supported by donations, golf tournaments or other social outings that are held in conjunction with the NAFA Annual Convention and Technical Seminar. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the sponsors that have supported NAFA this year. Your involvement is very much appreciated. I hope you’ll continue your sponsorship in 2022! Please let us know if there’s something we can do to even more value to you as we move into the new year. Membership dues renewal season is almost upon us, so please keep an eye out for notices. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any board member if you have questions, ideas for resources that we can provide to our community or to share issues and challenges that NAFA may be able to help address. I look forward to seeing everyone soon! ■ Take care,
