Changing with the times by Jay Reese, CAFS

When I sat down to write this article, my first thought was, “Wow, this past year has been a blur, where has the time gone?” Then I remembered a quote from the motivational speaker and author of the book “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind.”, T. Harv Eker. “When you’re engaged in what you love to do, it’s like driving in the fast lane. Time flies by and more roads open up to you, alternate routes you may not have known existed.” I look back over this past year and all the things we’ve accomplished as an organization, changes we’ve made, new ideas we’ve implemented, and I have to say, it certainly hasn’t been boring! I think that the changes we’ve made in NAFA reflect the changes that are taking place in our industry. Recent mergers and acquisitions, proposed changes in global standards, developments in medias and manufacturing processes and changes in the way we go to business using technology as a part of our everyday life demonstrate but a small part of why we as an organization have needed to modify our approach to stay current with the times. Yes, we’ve taken some alternative routes, but they’ve brought us to some new and exciting destinations at the same time. Let’s keep the journey moving forward. In my last article, I referred to many of the things we’ve done to improve communications and to garner additional involvement in our organization. From the feedback we’ve received, we’re on the right track. Participation at the committee meetings at our Technical Conference was at an all time high and each of the 4 committees have a full agenda of projects they are working on, in addition to many new members. We plan to continue to hold those meetings in the mornings so that we can maintain our momentum and still provide everyone with free time to get together with each other. I’d be remiss if I didn’t use this moment for my usual plea to ask everyone to take the time to participate in one of the committee meetings that is of interest to you. You’ll find your time is worth it and will pay you back in many ways. Even though summer time usually means relaxing and a chance to take some time away from business, I’m pleased to report that the past several months has seen each of our committees conduct a conference call to continue working on their agendas. Additionally, we’ve had Board of Directors meetings with a full agenda and lots of output. We’ve completely updated the NAFA Policies & Procedures, nominated new Board members that you’ll be voting on soon, worked on additions to the NAFA website, started the

process for updating our Long Range Plan, completed the Spanish translation of the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration and most importantly, completed the agenda for our upcoming Annual Meeting. Speaking of the Annual Meeting, registration is open for our 2018 Annual Meeting, which will be held September 25-27 at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort in beautiful Lake Tahoe, Nevada. If you haven’t already signed up, please remember to do so, since we have a fantastic agenda and a great keynote speaker in Dan Barnett, who will speak on “Make or Break Execution”. Additionally, the other speakers will present a variety of topics of interest on filtration technology, standards, government regulations and improving business practices. This years’ golf tournament which supports the NAFA Scholarship Fund will be at the Incline Village Championship Golf Course and is expected to sell out early. Lastly, we will be having a Young Professionals Reception, which proved to be tremendously popular at the Technical Conference in April. We hope to see everyone at the meeting, and early registration numbers are looking like this could be one of the most well attended meetings we’ve had. As always, we must thank our Sponsors, who contribute so much to the success of the NAFA meetings and whose contributions allow us to schedule great speakers and events. Thanks to the 24 full sponsors we’ve had for 2018, the NAFA membership appreciates your commitment. Since this is my last article, I wish to take a moment to thank everyone for their support and cooperation in helping me to continue to guide NAFA to be the great organization that it is. ASHRAE 52.2 Update What is ASHRAE 52.2 up to? Will ISO 16890 change 52.2? Does 52.2 need PM efficiencies? Kathleen Owen, ASHRAE Fellow, ASHRAE 52.2 chair

ASHRAE 52.2 is always a busy committee dealing with items with potentially high impact to the filtration world and those with much lower influence. A small item from this spring is that the Public Review of our Addendum a received no comments. Thus, within a few weeks, the psychrometric chart in ASHRAE 52.2 will be replaced with equations to be used to determine the air density from the temperature and humidity. This will provide better guidance for the use of spreadsheets to do this important calculation. ASHRAE 52.2 vs. ISO 16890 The biggest issue that 52.2 has under consideration now is a request from ASHRAE to consider whether we, the ASHRAE 52.2 committee, want ASHRAE to adopt the ISO 16890 standard as the ASHRAE particle filtration test standard. If a vote is eventually called, we have the options to keep ASHRAE 52.2 as is, switch to ISO 16890 as written, or adopt ISO 16890 with minor changes. To prepare for this possible vote, the committee has had many lively discussions on the merits of ISO 16890, comparisons of the two methods, the flaws in both, and even the economics of changing to one method vs. keeping both. For the summer ASHRAE meeting this year, I called for input and presentations on the topic from all members and interested parties. Although we have members who are both for and against switching, all offered presentations were either simply informative or against the change. A round robin of ISO 16890 was conducted this spring by Christine Sun of Filtration Technologies International. The presentation to 52.2 in Chicago in January showed a significant amount of scatter in the efficiency data both before and after IPA conditioning. In June, I showed a breakout of efficiency data by particle counter type and discussed that neither the counter nor any other yet identified variable accounted for the difference. The data set shown in Houston included graphs of the efficiency changes in the filters tested due to

the IPA conditioning step. For example, for the electret filter, the efficiency drop varied from ~8 to 42 percentage points. For the mechanical filters, the drop varied from ~12 to 34 percentage points (note that no drop-off was expected for these filters). Not presented at the committee meeting but brought to my attention later is a round robin run by Eurovent that showed good correlation across the test labs. Neither data set is publicly available, but discussions are underway to allow us to share the data. We expect that these results will help us determine if we feel comfortable accepting ISO 16890 as a repeatable test method. Other issues in the ISO 16890 discussion at the Houston meeting of 52.2 were: • variations in particle size distributions (urban vs rural, changes over time, indoor vs. outdoor, and more) in the air to be filtered and what distributions should be used to calculate efficiencies to approximate PM (particulate matter) removal. • applicability of the IPA (isopropyl alcohol) vapor conditioning step specifically does using this step do a good job of estimating actual use performance? • degradation of filter fibers due to IPA exposure – does the IPA cause changes that lead to misrepresenting the efficiency changes especially in mechanical filters? Data on this will be presented at the next meeting. • differences in gradations shown by methods – where 52.2 has 16 MERV levels, ISO has dozens of possibilities. One interesting comparison was noted: filters in the MERV ~6-9 range would all be ISO Coarse filters and their efficiencies would only be reported based on their arrestance values. Since the US uses many filters in this range, this could be a concern.

• the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) position against switching to ISO 16890. In a letter to me, as chair, AHRI presented their position including their main reasons for opposing the switch: the IPA conditioning step, the need for the US to have a standard influenced by the US and applicable to our market, and that, while knowing PM removal efficiency is useful, there is no accepted standard way to measure this value at this time. This letter is included in the 52.2 minutes and will be available on the 52.2 website through ashrae. org shortly.

ASHRAE 52.2 Round Robin A planned ASHRAE-sponsored round robin on 52.2 will look at the improvements in repeatability and reproducibility due to the most recent changes to 52.2. Since ISO 16890 incorporated these same requirements, this work will shed light on how well both tests work. The project should go out for bid in the fall.

62.1 strongly wants to be able to meet the current trend in air quality discussions to use PM as a measure of contamination and in the naming of contaminant removal effectiveness. Specifically, they plan to use an efficiency rating or value with the letters PM in it whether it comes from ISO, ASHRAE or some other recognized test. They recognize our expertise in the filter testing area, but they must have an ePM (ISO 16890’s rating) or similar rating with PM in the name to use for specifications to meet the needs of their communities. 52.2 has formed a committee to discuss this issue and work on a solution so that 52.2 can meet this need and stay a cited test standard in the 62.1 standard. This group hopes to have their suggestions ready to unveil before the January 2109 meeting. I’d like to have input from as many interested people as possible; plus, I can give you input as to whether we have already discussed your topic or answered your questions. ■

Kathleen Owen is an Air Pollution Control Engineer for Owen Air Filtration Consulting. She was involved in the development of ASHRAE 52.2, 145.1& .2 (for gas-phase air cleaners), and 185.1 & .2 (UV/ bioaerosol). She was the PI for ASHRAE 1360-RP, a study on dust collected by HVAC filters and the influence on filter performance and will be the PI on ASHRAE 1720 which will start in September.

PM (particulate matter) Removal Efficiency ASHRAE 62.1 and 62.2 currently specify allowed filters using minimum MERV levels. Both committees have recently put forth addendum to add ePM ratings based on ISO 16890 testing as alternatives. ASHRAE 52.2 members have responded with various objections. While allowing ISO 16890 as an option in these methods is likely to go forward, 52.2 is working with these committees to try to address their needs. Several 52.2 members attended the 62.1 meeting in Houston to meet their request for an in-person discussion. What we learned was that

In a letter to Kathleen Owen (see page 4 for Owen’s update on ASHRAE Standard 52.2), SSPC 52.2 Chairman, AHRI details their position on ASHRAE’s discussion to withdraw ASHRAE Standard 52.2 and adopt ISO Standard 16890. Dear SSPC 52.2 Chairman, I am writing on behalf of the Air-Filtration and Ultraviolet Light Treatment (AFUVLT) Product Section of the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) regarding ASHRAE Standard 52.2, Method of Testing General Ventilation Air-Cleaning Devices for Removal Efficiency by Particle Size. As you are aware, AHRI is the trade association representing manufacturers of heating, cooling, water heating, and commercial refrigeration equipment. The manufacturers, distributors and retailers of air filtration and ultraviolet light products constitute a vital segment of the HVACR industry. The AFUVLT Product Section understands that ASHRAE’s Standing Standards Project Committee (SSPC) 52.2 has discussed withdrawing ASHRAE Standard 52.2, adopting International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 16890, Air filters for general ventilation, in its place, and will likely vote on this topic in the near future. The AHRI AFUVLT Section would like to respectfully submit comments in support of retaining the ASHRAE [ASHRAE] 52.2 Standard and recommends not to adopt ISO 16890. The section believes that such action would not be in the best interests of the United States air filter industry or consumers. AHRI has incorporated the ASHRAE Standard 52.2 method of test in the AHRI Standard 680, Performance Rating of Residential Air Filter Equipment, as well as AHRI Standard 850, Performance Rating of Commercial and Industrial Air Filter Equipment. As a result of the benefits of testing per these standards, a great deal of industry expense and effort has been invested to both test air filters to these standards as well as communicate the benefits of using these standards to US residential and commercial consumers. Both ASHRAE

52.2 and AHRI 680 are legislated into air filter requirements for the State of California Appliance Efficiency Regulations Title 20, and Building Energy Efficiency Standards Title 24. AHRI is actively responding to proposed air filter legislative updates for Title 20 and Title 24. The three most pertinent reasons to not withdraw ASHRAE 52.2 are as follows: 1.

ISO 16890 mandates an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) vapor conditioning step which completely neutralizes charged filters of their particle-attracting treatment. The conditioning requirement would significantly under-report the performance of many types of filter media and make it impossible to compare air filter product performance. For critical applications, where the removal of media charge is appropriate, Standard 52.2 already allows for testing and reporting using a conditioning step (Appendix J). AHRI Standard 680 does not require a conditioning step. There is also no significant research or a consensus that media charge removal is appropriate for residential and commercial applications.

The US market needs an air filter standard that reflects domestic needs. Replacing 52.2 with ISO 16890 would cause the US to lose control of appropriate test method standards. The ASHRAE committees responsible for 52.2 contains members representing a cross-section of the US, while the US has just one vote and significantly less influence in ISO. The US building stock has the majority of forced air recirculation systems, and ventilation air is only a small fraction of the total air flow. This is significantly different

than European buildings. Adopting 16890 would likely negatively impact filter efficiency and energy usage for domestic residential systems, which have a limited space for filtration equipment. 3.

Standard 52.2 reports the actual filter performance efficiency in removing particles of sizes from 0.3-10 microns in diameter. Unlike the ASHRAE Standard, the ISO standard assigns four ratings or classifications to filters and measures the equivalent fractional efficiency of ePM1, ePM2.5, or ePM10, depending on the filter’s performance. PM was created as an outdoor measure for air quality. The AHRI product section strongly supports additional indoor air quality research and improvements to air filtration standards. Research shows that lowering PM levels has a direct impact on health. However more ASHRAE research and industry discussion, as well as consensus, is necessary to determine the appropriate way to create an indoor equivalent PM efficiency before the ePM approach is adopted.

In summary, withdrawing ASHRAE 52.2 would result in significant industry disruption and expenses. The AHRI Product section affirms its support for retaining ASHRAE 52.2. AHRI appreciates the opportunity to provide these comments and the AFUVLT Section would be glad to discuss or elaborate on any of these comments further should you wish. Darrel Robert Sutton, owner of the Filter Shop in Edmonton, passed away at 71 Darrel Robert Sutton (1947 -2018) of Sherwood Park, born in Lac La Biche, Alberta, Canada passed away Thursday, August 2, 2018 at the age of 71. Darrel loved God, family, life, curling, Floating Stone Lake, sailing, The Filter Shop, and all the many people and pets that journeyed with him in this lifetime. More about NAFA Certification programs The Certified Air Filter Specialis (CAFS) program distinguishes those professionals who have demonstrated a thorough, up-to-date understanding of air filtration technology and high level of professionalism. In order to become certified, air filtration professionals must pass an extensive examination on the principles, methods and applications of air filtration. When purchasing products or services from a Certified Air Filter Specialist, customers are assured that their particular requirements and needs will be addressed by a knowledgeable professional. The NAFA Certified Technician (NCT) Program was first introduced to NAFA members in January 1999 as an effort to add more credibility and professionalism to the air filtration industry. Since its introduction, nearly 300 air filter service technicians have taken the exam based on the NAFA Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of Air Filtration Systems manual. Interest started growing to make this program available to a much wider audience than just the NAFA membership. NAFA members saw the NCT program as an opportunity to spread knowledge and professionalism to technicians they encountered in the workplace who might not otherwise be involved in NAFA. The NAFA Certified Technician (NCT II) program is an accreditation provided for learning the correct and safe protocol for changing of Bag in/Bag out (BIBO) hazardous air filter housings. BIBO housings are becoming more commonplace at hospital and healthcare institutions, pharmaceutical facilities, and biopharma research operations. The need for properly trained personnel for this hazardous protocol has prompted the National Air Filtration Association to launch the NAFA Certified Technician Level II accreditation program.

Kelsey, an incoming freshman at Central Methodist University has cared for children throughout high school. The opportunity to work with children with special medical needs has led her to the medical profession. She has worked with animals, as a camp counselor and has volunteered her time with mission trips to Haiti, at the Crisis Nursery and her church, allowing her to help others. Being accepted at Ignite! Healthcare Academy solidified her decision to continue her education and pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Kelsey is very excited for her future to begin and cannot wait to help others as a nurse.

Alexis credits her interest in public policy to her decision to enroll in American Politics at Georgetown University. Since then, her interest in the United States government has only increased, leading to her first job as a poll worker in 2016. Her experiences provided the opportunity to intern for a U.S. Senator in Washington, D.C., where she even helped draft a bill! Community service has long been a part of Alexisâ€™ life, allowing her to meet interesting people from many cultures. Her service has allowed her to visit Cuba and a Native American Reservation. An education from Cornell University will help equip her with a diverse intellectual background in many subjects and a future in public service.

Penn State has long been a dream for Robert, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Robert joined the Boy Scouts of America at age 11 and has steadily advanced through the ranks, achieving the position of Eagle Scout. Throughout his life, he has pushed himself to undertake tasks to challenge and grow. He attended National Youth Leadership Training where he learned crucial leadership tools and skills. He is always mindful that he cannot do this alone, and it would not be possible without the help and support of his friends and family. Cleaner is Smarter: Simply Save Time, Money & HVAC Equipment Many building managers don’t realize the importance of air flow to an HVAC system, and the substantial cost of ignoring it. Fortunately improper air flow, and other HVAC issues, can be greatly reduced with the use of air intake filter screens to provide reliable yet relatively inexpensive air flow protection. But before we delve into air intake screens, let’s see why clean air flow, particularly as it relates to the cooling elements of an HVAC system, in commercial facilities is so important. Keeping HVAC Systems Running HVAC machines are complex machines, but the jobs they do are fairly simple. They draw in air, condition it, and then redistribute it into the building. This all works quite nicely, assuming the air flow isn’t blocked. That’s when problems can start.

Depending on the business, there are a variety of needs for cooling. Building environments for occupant comfort, critical environments utilizing sensitive electronics, production equipment, industrial processes that produce heat or perishables that require temperature control to name a few. What they all have in common is that none of these things can be cooled without air flow. Whether the air is moving by natural forces such as outside air, or by mechanical power such as a motorized fan, it has to move to allow the system to work. To maintain proper air flow HVAC units need to be kept clean and free from damage. That may seem obvious, but remember that critical components of the HVAC system are typically outdoors on the roof, where they are out of sight and “out of mind.” Sitting up there, leaves them vulnerable to hail, as well as high winds and storms, pests and environmental airborne debris. With outside elements creating potential obstacles, it’s quite a marvel that these units work as well as they do! Here are the main threats that restrict HVAC air flow, resulting in higher energy costs, equipment breakdown, and reduced equipment longevity: • Airborne debris clogging air intake fins • Fin damage—outside fins can become dented and pressed against each other

• Condenser coil damage and fouling—needed to facilitate the transfer of heat from the refrigerant to the air • Dirty or moisture damaged interior air filters—force equipment to work harder, run longer or are unable to capture contaminates before they load up a downstream coil The High Cost of HVAC Cleaning If only upkeep was simple and inexpensive. Unfortunately, it is often neither. One problem is access: rooftop equipment can be inconvenient to reach or lack a convenient water supply. Typical coil cleanings can use 90 gallons of water to adequately flush out the chemicals—so the lack of hoses and water makes cleaning challenging (and that’s assuming they aren’t in an area with water shortages). The cost of water can be high—in some areas water costs are higher than that of electricity. Also, some regions must adhere to strict EPA guidelines on chemical runoff. This makes rinsing a bit more complicated than merely aiming a hose. To make things even more challenging, high-pressure cleaning can damage the aluminum fins, especially if using untrained labor. With all these obstacles, HVAC system cleaning, can take hours. Prevent Problems with PreVent® The PreVent® system provides a simple and effective option. NAFA announces 32 Clean Air Award recipients for 2018 The National Air Filtration Association has announced its recipients of the Clean Air Awards for 2018. The Clean Air Award is presented each year to the building owners and managers who take steps to significantly improve the quality of their indoor air by increasing the level or efficiency of their HVAC air filtration system in 10 specific categories. Candidates are nominated for the award by both NAFA members and members of the facility management community, and must submit detailed and specific steps taken toward cleaning the indoor environment through “best air filtration practices” and system hygiene. A NAFA Certified Air Filter Specialist confirms these improvements. Nominees are judged by the NAFA Clean Air Award Committee and each recipient receives a custom-designed award, building signage and recognition for their efforts. Director of Sales, Wallner Expac, Engineers  Innovators  Manufacturers How do you motivate your employees? I like to lead and motivate by example. I was never one to sit behind a desk– if needed, I would rather get out and work alongside the employees. It helps you to get to know them, share knowledge, and learn how to improve operations. From staying in the plant, loading trucks, working on equipment, or packaging finished product, no job is too small.

After graduating from high school, Timbs started to work for a filter company in Memphis, he worked his way up through the company– from equipment maintenance, to purchasing, and eventually being named plant manager. Those experiences have given Timbs many opportunities to share his knowledge with others, including Wallner Expac, where he has been the Director of Sales for eight years.

Did you have a business mentor and if so, who is/was it? For me, I can’t limit to one person, rather I’ve learned more from talking with many industry professionals and customers over the years. What’s the best piece of business advice anyone ever gave you? Use common sense, respect people and treat them as you would want to be treated. What is the most challenging aspect n the running your company? We serve filter companies by providing them with expanded metal and other solutions for their products. And that’s a challenge onto itself. With many different products and the specialized requirements for each customer, we must be flexible and innovative. We do so by actively listening to what our customers are asking of us, keeping a pulse on the changing industry requirements and trends, and offering unique solutions to help them address their needs. What do you think is the biggest challenge the air filtration industry currently faces? I think it has to be keeping up with the incredible growth of the filtration market. There are a lot of opportunities out there, but with more interest being put on cleaner air, the demand for filtration products will continue to increase.

Do you have any words of wisdom for up and coming filter professionals? Keeping up with the changes in the industry is easier when you’re associated with organizations such as NAFA. If you are learning the basics of filtration or need advice, you will be able to get that knowledge through this group. How has your company benefited from NAFA membership? Being associated with NAFA allows Wallner Expac to see and spend time with some of our customers at industry events and learn about new and emerging filtration technologies. ■

With Fall officially under way and another NAFA Annual Convention in the books, it’s time to look forward to 2019 and a new membership year. When you receive your dues renewal, I hope you’ll take a moment to reflect on what you’ve received from your membership in NAFA, as well as what you’ve given back. Following are a few new things that have come your way in 2018: • The NAFA Guidelines are now available to be branded with your organization’s logo. • A Young Professionals reception was offered as part of both the Technical Seminar and Annual Convention. • Expanded company listings on the website are available at no extra charge (see below).

• The CAFS program has expanded to include more opportunities to take the exam. And, keep in mind, webinar recordings are now available for members preparing to take the CAFS exam. • Products with the NAFA logo on them are now available on Lands’ End®. And, you can look for more news in 2019 on the following in progress projects: • The fourth edition of the Installation Operation and Maintenance of Air Filtration Systems (IOM) will be released.
