FAREWELL

From stage to screen, politics to sports, we lost some of our finest this year. Barry White gave us the gift of orchestration with "Love's Theme," Althea Gibson's triumph at Wimbledon made her the first African American to win the title, and Maynard Jackson's tireless efforts created today's Atlanta. Lynne Thigpen (Dec.22, 1948-March 12,2003) wowed us on Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Howard "Sandman" Sims (Jan. 24, 1917-M ay 20, 2003) teased and entertained on Showtime at the Apol/o. And USAF Lt. Col. Michael Anderson (Dec. 25, 1959-Feb. 1, 2003) devoted his life to science before perishing on the Space Shuttle Columbia. These are the people and events that defined our times. sAvoy salutes them.
