Sadly, as I put pen to paper, we once again find ourselves in a situation of despair. South Africa saw the start of Covid-19 in 2020, the violent looting that ensued in KZN and Gauteng in 2021 and more recently the flooding that has just devastated parts of KZN. The relentless rains in April led to the country’s worst floods in recent times. The destruction shared amongst us colleagues, varied from mild flooding to the loss of property, belongings and homes. To boot, many of us were left with no electricity and/or water for the few weeks that ensued. Over 400 people lost their lives in these floods. I am relieved and thankful that we, at Sika, did not lose any staff members – yet our hearts go out to those who did. I was fortunate enough to have a dinner with the Swiss Ambassador, Nicholas Bruhl, in April where he made mention of the incredible resilience of South Africans, noting that despite the difficulties and setbacks of the last two years, coupled with the ongoing rampant corruption, we still manage a national smile, laugh and positivity. Sika SA recently embarked on a campaign: ‘Waterproofing Specialists for Over 110 Years’. It was about PAUL ADAMS highlighting our strength and versatility in the complete range of our trusted waterproofing products. MD, Sika South Africa Adorned in fully branded vehicles, our distribution teams visited local stores across the country, providing training for staff and customers alike. On a parallel, our industry team conducted a webinar showcasing our wall cladding adhesive business. In terms of relevance and progression in a modern market, digital continues to be a major focus at Sika, encompassing various forms from digital marketing platforms to online e-commerce channels. Collectively, we look forward to the day we finally merge with MBCC, to become one large successful company. Both companies will benefit from the synergies of our unified brands and services, making us a strong entity in the local markets. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks, once again, to all staff members for your commitment and determination in these turbulent times. NATIONAL WATERPROOFING Sika team leaving their mark ROADSHOW wherever they go Sika took to the road with their latest campaign of WATERPROOFING SPECIALISTS FOR OVER 110 YEARS, over the month of April. The passionate Sika distribution team conducted roadshows hitting as many stores as possible covering all their areas. This initiative was done to increase the awareness of Sika’s tried and trusted complete range of waterproofing solutions by educating the clients and customers with conducting live demonstrations. This team have put in a fantastic effort and the sales prove this!

New durable floor for Peter Baxter Panel Beaters Trust is the foundation of all Sika’s partnerships and collaborations. This was clearly achieved several years ago with Peter Baxter Panel Beaters, based in Pietermaritzburg. The beginning of our partnership started in 2013 when their workshop floor was in much need of an upgrade, and when they recently decided to extend their workshop area, they contacted their trusted partner for assistance with the extended workshop floor. Our KZN Regional Branch Manager, Mervyn Naidoo went to inspect the workshop area. Firstly, Sikadur® AP was recommended to patchup some of the blemishes on the current concrete floors that occurred due to the excessive vehicular movement and heavy equipment that passes over the floor every day, due to the nature of the business. Sikadur® AP is an all-purpose, two component, epoxy adhesive for general bonding and patching of various building materials, including concrete.
Westside Trading, the same applicator that laid the Sikafloor®-261 system several years ago was also onboard with the current workshop extension. Westside Trading prepared the 1300m2 floor by diamond grinding the surface in preparation for the coating. Sikafloor®-161, a twocomponent, low viscosity epoxy resin was applied to prime the concrete substrate, followed by a first coat of Sikafloor®-264 in light grey. Blemishes in the first coat was smoothed off with a very light diamond grind, before the final coat of Sikafloor®-264 was applied. Sikafloor®-264 provides a smooth, easy to clean finish for concrete and cementitious screeds on medium to heavy wear floors, when applied at the recommended film thickness. It’s durable, seamless and where required, slip resistant finish makes it a perfect fit for the panel beater’s workshop floor.
Sikalastic®-560 does it again Wanting to transform their newly built flat roof, homeowners from Secunda, Gauteng, knew that their new roof needed to be seamlessly waterproofed first before undertaking the look of their dreams. Fastner & Fluid contacted Raj Naidoo, to assist GSA Development contractors on site to specify the correct products, ensuring that the newly built flat roof is sealed precisely with trusted quality waterproofing systems. Upon inspection, our dedicated distribution sales representatives, Raj Naidoo and Louisa Steenkamp, noticed the expansion joints of the flat roof needed attending to before waterproofing the entire roof. Twenty 10mm expansion joints needed to be sealed before the elastomeric waterproofing system could be applied. It was recommended that the all the joints, be sealed with Sikaflex®-11 FC+. Sikaflex®-11 FC+ was developed by Sika over 50 years ago and is a fast curing, elastic joint sealant. Sikalastic®-560 was the chosen waterproofing solutions due to the fantastic properties of the product. Sikalastic®-560 is a one-component, premium elastomeric waterproofing liquid membrane for both new construction and refurbishment projects. Along with its UV resistant and UV stable qualities, it creates a seamless, durable waterproofing membrane with its fantastic crack-bridging properties. To prepare the roof for the waterproofing system, the newly sealed joints needed to be sanded down and smoothed before the first coat of Sikalastic®-560, was applied on the 300m2 roof. Following the first coat of Sikalastic®-560, Sika® Reemat Premium, was applied to the roof. Sika® Reemat Premium is a glass fibre-mat reinforcement for the liquid applied membrane, making the system stronger and more durable without significantly changing its conductive capabilities. It is recommended to be used on roofs with many details and complex geometry even when accessibility is limited. Once the reinforcement membrane was dry enough to walk on the roof was sealed with a second coat of Sikalastic®-560. The residential home now has a seamless, leak-proof flat roof thanks to Sika’s durable, liquidapplied membrane.

SEDIBELO PLATINUM MINES LIMITED Fully integrated Sedibelo Platinum Mines Limited (SPM), is involved in the exploration, development, operation, and processing of Platinum Group Metals (PGM) mineral deposits in the Bushveld Complex (BC), South Africa - one of the richest ore deposits in the world. SPM are the owners of the Pilanesberg Platinum Mine (PPM) in the North-West Province, some 200km west of Johannesburg. Due to major water losses, the 60m diameter tailings thickener at PPM required resealing, after which it had to be deemed watertight. Sika were contacted by LEOKA Project Management, the main contractors, for a solution. In turn, ConSolve were asked by Sika to assist LEOKA as sub-contractors. Sedibelo Platinum had urged a very quick turnaround time on this project as the thickener is the “heartbeat” of the mine and production losses were substantial. While conscious of the production constraints facing the client, Sika’s approved contractor, Con-Solve Civils, assessed the repair requirements and proposed a workable solution to the client by recommending that the old bandages and joint sealant be removed and totally replaced. The LEOKA engineering team supported the proposed solution and Sedibelo instructed Con-Solve Civils to proceed with the necessary repairs. Under normal circumstances this would have been an approximate six-to-eight-week project, but by working twelve-hour day and night shifts, Con-Solve Civils completed it in just 2.5 weeks. In terms of product diversity, and volume, a wide range of Sika products were specified and used. Sikaflex®-11 FC, a multipurpose elastic adhesive and joint sealant, was applied to all construction joints as the secondary seal, before installing the Sikadur-Combiflex® SG, as the primary joint seal. Forty-seven 6.6lt Sikadur®-31 DW kits were used as the bedding mortar for the bandage system. Sikadur®-31 DW is a 2-part epoxy structural adhesive that has been specially formulated to meet the requirements for use in contact with drinking water. It was best suited to this time sensitive project as it is easy to mix and apply, has high mechanical strengths and good abrasion & chemical resistance qualities.
Twenty-five kits of Sikalastic®-152, a highly elastic cement-based coating, was applied on the wall joints incorporating a 5 x 5mm plastic-lined glass fibre mesh, as well as next to the Sikadur-Combiflex® SG on the floor joints for additional waterproofing due to small surface cracks that formed on the concrete. Its purpose, an additional waterproofing and concrete protection due to hairline cracks. It was also applied over wall construction joints with applicable plastic-lined glass fibre matt for additional reinforcement. Sika SA are proud to have had their products recognised, by the engineers and contractors, as part of the solution to this project. Sika SA assisted Con-Solve with dedicated technical back-up service and on constant stand-by for stock requirements, meetings, and general client queries. Con-Solve Civils are to be applauded for their inputs. Despite being 250kms from Midrand, Con-Solve staff were on site to inspect the thickener, only 4.5 hours after receiving the call from Sika and LEOKA. The subsequent quotation and proposal were submitted to LEOKA five (5) hours after the inspection; and the Con-Solve production team were on site within 24 hours of receiving an order. As with any project, this one was not without its challenges. The supply, organising and transport of materials was a constant stress for all parties; though through a collective understanding of the products and the nature of the project, success prevailed. One month after the thickener was filled, the structure was certified watertight. To do a job correctly, first time around, requires the teamwork and support of a multitude of other divisions and external parties. Sedibelo are positive towards future projects involving Sika and Con-Solve Civils.
As part of the Sikadur Combiflex® SG System, 188m of Sikadur-Combiflex® SG-20 P - 2mmx 250mm was used to waterproof the wall to floor joint, while 848m of Sikadur-Combiflex® SG 20P - 2mmx 200mm was used to waterproof floor joints. Sikadur-Combiflex® SG-20 P is a flexible waterproofing tape based on modified flexible / thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), with advanced adhesion properties. Other advantages in the use of this product include not requiring site activation, high flexibility – a useful property for crack & joint bridging - good resistance to chemicals and UV exposure, and it performs in a broad range of temperatures.

MARK GRIESEL CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF SERVICE 25 years ago, our valued colleague , Mark Griesel, started his career at Sika. Mark with a strong construction background started his journey in 1997 at the Sika Richards Bay branch as a sales representatives where he was later promoted to Richards Bay Branch Manager and an added responsibility as KZN Sales Manager for Construction. Mark has made sure the Sika footprint has grown in the region, during his tenure we’ve seen the Richards Bay branch relocate twice to larger premises, the last time being April 2021. Mark has been given the title as our local flooring guru and true to his name is our RAIN (Regional Applicator Instruction Network) man for the Sika SADEC region. Thank you Mark for taking all the challenges in your stride and for all your passion and dedication to Sika!
