MD ADDRESS SIKA BEAT APRIL 2019 What a start to 2019! An unbelievable sales conference, with many saying that it was one of the best that we have had in years. And then sadly, the devastating news of the loss of three of our dear colleagues in a horrific car accident en route back home from the conference that left us all shocked and grief-stricken. Mark Wilson, Ian Snyman and Johan Van Wyk will forever be remembered as close friends and will remain in our thoughts and prayers for many years to come. As anticipated, 2019 is proving to be an interesting year for our country as a whole. We have started experiencing some of the worst "blackouts" due to load shedding by Eskom, which is a direct result of the consequences of state capture and money being stolen from our SOE's. Our general elections are only a month away and the various political parties are making huge promises as to what they can deliver. Whatever those promises may be, we sincerely hope that they will help to stimulate our already struggling economy.

LEAD STORY: SIKA HEAD OFFICE REVAMP
A WELCOMING NEW RECEPTION AT SIKA HEAD OFFICE HUGE THANKS TO BOTH MARK GRIESEL AND MARK DUCKHAM FOR THE EFFORT THEY PUT IN TO ENSURE THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROJECT
In order to maintain its professional corporate image, Sika South Africa undertook a refurbishment project in the company’s head office reception area, which included structural and aesthetic upgrades to the walls and flooring. Sika South Africa’s head office is located in Westmead, Pinetown, and is renowned for supplying specialty chemicals to the building and automotive industries. Since flooring is one of Sika’s areas of expertise, they were in the perfect position to use their very own acclaimed flooring solutions and skilled in-house technical experts for the upgrade of the head office reception area. A challenge that was easily overcome with careful thought and preparation, was the high volume of foot traffic that would still need to pass through the central reception area to access their respective offices whilst the renovation process was underway. The initial phase of the project began in October 2018, when Sika’s specialised flooring products were specified by Sika’s very own floor expert, Mark Griesel. The overall goal was for the floor to have an attractive and clean decorative finish, which is precisely what was accomplished. In preparation, the existing tiles had to be removed, at which point it was noted how much the screed beneath had deteriorated, with major cracks running through. The cracks were subsequently filled with Sikadur®-52 ZA, a two-part, solvent-free, low viscosity injection-liquid based on high strength epoxy resins. The expertise of Concrete Laser Flooring (CLF) was called on to provide a top quality finish with their dedicated team and equipment. CLF assisted with the preparation of the floor to achieve the perfect finish to the substrate, whereafter the final decorative system was applied. The methodology was priming the existing concrete surface with Sikafloor®-161 Primer followed by a scraper coat of Sikafloor®-161 Primer filled with Sika Extender T to avoid any outgassing that could cause pin-holing. The top coat was applied with a combination of Sikafloor® DecoFiller and Sikafloor®-304W clear matte. Sikafloor® DecoFiller is a combination of Sikafloor®-169 clear epoxy resin and Sikafloor® DecoFiller certified synthetic fine filler that provides a highly aesthetic and decorative yet durable flooring system. CLF again provided support for the priming and laying of the SikaFloor® Decofiller system. Together, Sika and CLF provided a finish of truly international standards for decorative flooring. The stair risers and walls were primed with Sikafloor®-161, binded with Sikadur®-932 coarse silica sand. All vertical surfaces were covered with Sikafloor® DecoFiller and thereafter sealed with two coats of Sikafloor®-304 W, a clear, two-part, water-based polyurethane matte coat. Whilst renovations were on the go, and as part of the reception revamp, Sika took the opportunity to create a green garden from an old existing pond feature. The chosen waterproofing system was the trusted Sikalastic® MTC green roof system that has root-resistant properties. The system comprised Sikalastic®-601BC, a cold-applied, seamless, highly elastic, root-resistant, polyurethane base coat, reinforced with Sika Reemat Premium Glass Fibre. Sikalastic®-621 TC was finally used as a top coat to create a tough, highly durable waterproofing system that is seamless and root-resistant. Despite minor challenges, Sika’s high quality products enabled this project to be a showpiece for their special range of decorative flooring systems.

A NEW RESERVOIR FOR THE EAST RAND
A high performance joint sealing system supplied by Sika was used in the development of a new reservoir in Kempton Park, Gauteng, as a means of supplementing the region‘s current water supply infrastructure as there is a continuous increase in demand. The twenty-five megalitre reservoir is just one of dozens of reservoirs supplying potable water to the people on the East Rand. Full on-site support was undertaken by Sika Technical Sales Consultant, Jaun-Roe van Wyk, and the main contractor, WK Construction, was advised about product performance, correct application methods, and technical data. The development of the new reservoir was approved by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and the project scope included considerable work to the walls and columns for both construction and expansion joints, as well as strengthening of the reservoir floor joints. The internal joints of the reservoir also underwent a waterproofing exercise to prevent the unit from leaking. Con-Solve Civils was the Sub-Contractor and applicator of our Combiflex System who specified Sika’s acclaimed Sikadur-Combiflex® SG Bandage System to seal the wall and floor joints in the final stages of the project. This is a high performance joint sealing system consisting of a flexible Polyolefin waterproofing tape and Sikadur® epoxy adhesive, which was Sikadur®-31 DW in this case. The Sikadur-Combiflex® SG bandage System is employed primarily in the construction of water-retaining structures and reservoirs. As a highly specialised waterproofing system, it is used for expansion and connection joints, as well as for cracks. When fixed to the joint, it allows for irregular and significant movement in more than one direction, whilst maintaining a high quality seal. This system is prescribed where the use of conventional sealing techniques is not possible. Additionally, the bandage system was covered with steel plates, which were laser-cut to follow the circular shape of the structure. On-site challenges included time constraints as a result of usual construction related pressures in urban environments. Nonetheless, the installation went smoothly and the project was completed in September 2018.

KZN ROADSHOW Sika’s KZN sales team hosted a fantastic roadshow in Newcastle at the Matuba Lodge on the 9th of April 2019. Sika is well known in the greater Durban area and other major centres, however there are some outlying areas that we want to focus on. Sika’s Mervyn Naidoo, KZN Branch Manager, decided on Newcastle to create Sika brand awareness and expand our footprint. Despite the fact that Newcastle is a relatively small town, the turnout was impressive, especially considering that it was an evening event, and most attendees had just finished their day at work. Contractors, block manufacturers, hardware store members and individuals from the automotive industry were some of the people in attendance. The evening started with an introduction of what Sika is about, and the various applications where Sika products can be used. The visitors then networked along the 4 tables set up per application field to allow them to ask questions, learn about new products, and to handle and use the products themselves. The evening was an all-round hit with our visitors, who were also treated to snack platters, a lucky draw and giveaways. The interest shown in our range of solutions was excellent, with attendees paying particular attention to the demonstrations. The networking opportunity benefitted all who attended and the overall opinion of the event was that it was exceptionally successful and worthwhile. Thank you, Newcastle!

SIKA IN ACTION BUCO BERGVLIET CONTRACTORS EVENING - CAPE TOWN DISTRIBUTION TEAM Buco Bergvliet’s Annual Contractors evening was held on Wednesday 27th February 2019, with good turnout of about 15 different suppliers to their business, including Sika. This event takes place every year to say thanks to their contractors and give us as suppliers the chance to rub shoulders with the contractors, which is very important in building relationships with the stores and end-users. Here we displayed a variety of products, all stocked by the store, but also took the opportunity to showcase our new Everbuild Range. Drinks and snacks were served, ending with some traditional Boerewors rolls.
BUCO CLAREMONT CONTRACTORS EVENING Buco Claremont training was held on Thursday 7th March 2019. This is an annual event where a small number of selected suppliers are invited to spend the evening with the contractors of the store. Random chairs had lucky numbers beneath them, giving the contractors a chance to win a hamper from suppliers. Here is a photo of the lucky winner of the Sika hamper handed over by the store manager, Greg. The event started at 17h30 and lasted until 21h00. Customers were treated with drinks, snacks and a spit-braai for supper. The event was well supported by +- 50 contractors that I got to network with. This store has been one of my top clients for years, stocking a good variety of distribution products, as well as some construction products. BUCO RUSTENBURG TRAINING - GAUTENG DISTRIBUTION TEAM Buco Rustenburg training was held on 26th February 2019. Eighty people attended the evening event held at the Buco premises. Training was done on Sika’s most renowned DIY products. Every contractor received a Sika bag with Sika leaflets, dry samples and Sika goodies. There was a lucky draw for a Sika hamper, which was won by Corne Lubbe, head of a Health and Safety training centre on a platinum mine. The evening ended off with a braai and drinks to mingle and network with the contractors and staff. This event was a huge success as the next morning we visited two sites to give advice and more on-site training.
DURBANVILLE PLAASFEES Sika’s Phillip Boshoff, Erica van Heerden and David van der Ross attended the annual Plaasfees, which took place on 8th and 9th March at the Diemersdal Wine Farm. The two-day event started early on the Friday, and attendance was exclusively for customers of Builders Warehouse, BTD and BEX. Builders Warehouse invited their top contractor customers, as well as engineers and architects, many of whom specify Sika products. We had set up a Sika stand and demonstrated some of our products, in particular, our new Everbuild range. The main event opened up for the public on Saturday and we were off to another early start. A marching band and a reptile show were a couple of the entertainment features. The main marquee was split, with one half occupied by suppliers, and the other half made available to customers, who could sit and enjoy all sorts of delicious food, as well as Diemersdal wine. An estimated 7000 people passed through the gates, providing Sika with many interested onlookers and visitors at our stand. We did demos of various products for the public, focusing mostly on DIY products. We interacted with many customers, from builders/contractors to endusers, to engineers and architects. Saturday proved to be the busier of the two days and was most productive and beneficial.

PROUDLY SUPPORTING THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED IN PMB Sika’s Distribution Sales Representative, Heidi Nel, in partnership with Plumblink’s Regional Manager, Peter Wilson, facilitated a donation of Sika products for the refurbishment of the bathroom facilities of the residential accommodation section of The Association for the Physically Challenged, Pietermaritzburg branch. The Association for the Physically Challenged is an NPO which provides essential services to the physically challenged and adults who are unable to be cared for at home, and since the organisation is dependent on government funding, donations from the public, as well as companies, is crucial to ensuring that their doors remain open. As part of their corporate and social investment strategy, Plumblink approached Sika to assist with the donation of Cemflex® for the waterproofing of the 30m² space at the Scottsville facility, and the project is currently in progress.

CHANGE OF ISO CERTIFICATION BODY The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) has been in the spotlight in recent months, with numerous complaints about the level of service and management of the company. A combined decision was made to terminate our contract with SABS. Sika South Africa has now joined the international Sika AG multi-site certification, which is certified by SGS - Société Générale de Surveillance (the New Certification Body). To explain how this certification works, a group of sites within the Sika Group will be sampled and selected to be audited by SGS according to the applicable schemes (9001/14001/18001). Once the audits are complete and all findings have been closed, SGS will issue certificates where Sika South Africa will be listed as an ‘’additional facility’’ of the Sika AG Group.
