Scope of Work: 3D Schematic Design

The tower stands out elegantly through the city’s skyline as the epitome of futurism and development. Starting with a welcoming commercial base that activates the plaza, the building is gracefully staggered upwards into more calm office spaces, with green, social terraces. Smooth lines trace the path of the users entering the building through the landscape, which are then transformed into a series of louvres that elegantly encompass the building into unique comfortable, transparent spaces.

These louvers open upwards to more iconic offices, surrounded by a unique façade treatment.Thus, the tower welcomes its users through a lively plaza, into a hub of diversity, overlooking different views through different lenses, and allowing for unique experiences.

Commercial Project

Location: New Administrative Capital, Egypt | Area: 1000 m2

Scope of Work: 3D Schematic Design

Avalon’s landmark in the New Capital welcomes its visitors into an enriching experience through its new mixed use development. From a vast lively plaza, through several terraces, leading up to a serene roof with views of the new city skyline, the project provides an interesting journey for its users that maximizes the use of exciting outdoor space. To highlight this experience, the form utilizes a cubist design approach, where several intersecting cubes are stacked together to create self shaded terraces, which are connected by a solid plane that twists upwards, raising the building’s perceived height. Avalon utilizes vegetation, water features, and horizontal and vertical shading devices to maintain maximum comfort for both the indoor and outdoor areas.

SOW: 3D Schematic Design and Floor Plans

Al Araby’s latest showroom flows from the waves of the Mediteranian into a an attractive and welcoming building in the New Alamein City.

From the street approach, visitors are introduced to the company’s brand through an abstracted interpretation of the company logo that perforates the main facade of the building. With the waves pushing the entrance upwards, the visitor enters the showroom into an aesthetic that reminds them of the vast and exciting sea.They are then welcomed into a open showroom area that then extends onto four connected floors. A lush outdoor plaza provides a temporary break from the commercial shopping experience, while also maximising daylight throughout all floors of the showroom.

SOW: 3D Design Development and Floor Plans Villa Hilal explores a modern adaptation of traditional Arabian houses in Oman. With a floor plan that adopts the privacy and spacious needs of the user, the villa stands with a modern facade that reflects its owner’s modernist ideals. By utilizing self shading elements, the facade opens up to provide an abundance of daylighting and open views, while maintaining an adequate comfort level in the indoor spaces. By providing various gathering spaces in the indoor and outdoor spaces, Villa Hilal allows its inhabitants to form social bonds with eachother, as well as external visitors, while maintaining private living spaces for the rest of the family. The villa thus acts as a statement of the bridge between modern design and traditional architectural requirements.

The Akam Mosque rises as an abstraction of Prophet Muhammed’s Mi’raj Journey. As the prophet rose through the seven heavens, so does the Muslim worshipper aim to find itself. It seeks to rise through this holy journey, to finally find connection to its creator. As the worshipper approaches the mosque, they see its planes rising smoothly along seven stages, ending at a clear opening to the skies, to the heavens, to its creator.And just as the Muslim religion defines the bases for this journey on five main pillars, so does our Mosque’s journey rise from five clear edges, through 5 rising minarets, to the open skies. Accordingly, for five times a day, the Muslim soul escapes the materiality of this Earthen life, and finds an unbroken connection to the Almighty.

The building aims to facilitate a generative labyrinth that draws on the assets of Fuwwah and creates a catalyst node of continuous influence, by bridging the gap between heritage as a physical object and heritage as a social event. The building draws on Cedric Price’s idea of living heritage: mutability, functional multiplicity, temporality and situationism. It also borrows from the Rab’-Madrasa Islamic typology to provide a local application methodology. It aims to create a space that both carves temporal movement and is in turn carved by it. It looks at the community’s de-centralized network of contextualized spaces, and then tries to create in-between spaces that facilitate new patterns of encounter.

Fuwwatona is a Social Laboratory that attempts to bring together all the different stakeholders of the community, into a very generative environment, where they can redefine what Fuwwah is and what it can be. This is done through a participatory and grass-roots process of revitalizing local artisan skills, with the help of the outside futuristic support.This process of redefinition is facilitated through an abundance of open spaces that stimulate growth according to the organization logic of a local labyrinth.Thus, the social laboratory becomes a complex of three main components, a hotel, a skill school, and a recreational centre, with the skill school bring the core.

The Building tectonics involve an intricate interaction between a load-bearing brick core and surrounding post and beam steel structure.The brick is utilized as an indigenous material that is rooted in the soul of Fuwwah.

It is reminiscent of its physical heritage that involves mangour brickwork, while utilizing the skilfulness of its local masons and abundance of surrounding brick factories. The steel structure signifies the growth and development potential of Fuwwah.

The brick structure is composed of a series of brick columns, that carry brick vaults, with carry the above path or riwaq.

The building is defined by a fluid labyrinth that grows from a main structured path. It starts with a series of four “conduits”, hosting the four components of the skill school, and acting as “temporal thresholds” that shift the frame of reference of the user into a generative environment. A functional structured “transitional spine” connects these conduits.As each spine meets a conduit, it pushes a fluid path on the opposite side.

From this path, grows a series of “riwaqs” that act as introverted communal space, facilitating the growth of generative supporting activities around them. Thus, the building becomes a labyrinth of communal spaces that trigger functional spaces, maintaining fluid interaction and subtle privacy levels throughout.

Location:Tawfikeya, Cairo | Area: 700 m2

In an attempt to bring back art to an industrialized neighbourhood, this piece of architecture attempts to bridge the gap between the culture-oriented residents and the business-orientaed market arena. It is hypothesised that the prevalent boundary between these two main user groups, is at the core of all of Tawfikeya’s problems. Hence, an artspace that utilizes urban timeshare and walkability fundamentals, is created.

The site had a higher ratio of male to female density. Cars dominated a huge part of the street, and interfered with pedestrian traffic. There was high interplay between the tangible and intangible. The tangible, the high street vendor domination, interlocked with the industrial and territorial aura of the neighbourhood, vs. its surrounding downtown aesthetic. The site had both formal and informal vending outposts, yet there was an informal law outlining the dimensions of each vending space, and working hours.

The peripheral experience of Tawfikeya highly overshadowed the conventional architectural façades. There were very few trees on the sidewalks.

Location: Mokattam, Cairo | Area: 2,000 m2

During the past two decades, the Egyptian society has witnessed a rise in substance abuse, along with a catastrophic exclusion of its victims. Most Egyptians do not know how to deal with this illness, or even acknowledge that it is a disease. The topic of substance abuse, or addiction, is considered a “taboo,” leaving its “criminals” completely stigmatized. Thus, those who get out of rehab are usually filled with energy, because their addiction is reflected as a yearning for giving back to the community, yet their society is unable to process their situation correctly. Shutting them down leads to their relapse, and ignoring the situation only fuels the curiosity of the younger generation. This design aims to break that stigma, by bringing the community together.

Internal Communal Court The Curio Community Library intends to create a lively, serene and calm atmosphere where people with a drug problem or those interested in the subject, can delve into books, get together, share their experiences, escape their problems and learn something that could eventually make their lives better.

SOW: Sections, Elevations, Concept and Floor Plans

In order to break the Egyptians’ general fear towards hospital facilities, we designed a metropolitan hospital that would create a warm environment for the community of Korba. After conducting a thorough site analysis, we reached a conclusion that Korba goes through a Continuous Cycle of Rebirth, between Nostalgia and Futurism. Accordingly, our design borrowed elements of memory and monumentality from the site, and modern elements of form generation. The result is a building that accommodates for the needs of Egyptian families, such as large waiting areas, constantly connected to the outdoors. It also draws in the vendors around the site to integrate the whole community. Finally, it abstracts and redefines the Architectural language of Korba.

The area of Nazlet El-Semman has a history that dates back thousands of years. Its inhabitants have changed throughout the ages, with the latest mostly working in the industry around the Great Pyramids of Giza. In recent decades, the area and the living standards of its inhabitants have slowly deteriorated Hence, the project attempts to re-generate the image of Nazlet El Semman as a multi-functional touristic village of endless opportunities for its inhabitants. It aims to improve relationships among the locals and tourists, narrowing the gap of segregation between them, thus improving the overall economic state. This is achieved through the revival of the contextual landscape and roofscape as well as turning barriers into potentials of interaction.

This project involved the abstraction of Crystallization, as a natural phenomenon that has behavioural patterns which can be transformed into design parameters. By replicating the behaviour of crystallizing particles into that of humans, an innovative design was conceived, transforming the rigid crystals into a dynamic, organic forms. Entrances to the site are conceived as points of high density, thus attracting particle (user) flow. There, the stickiness coefficient is at its highest, thus the form starts to create a defined area. Highest density occurs at the intersection between the circulation paths, resulting in main activity nodes.

By exploring the phenomenon, I found that the crystalline shape is determined by the possibility of the particles to reach the cluster via Brownian Motion; arms of the cluster catch similar particles, so they cannot get to the inner parts, thus growth happens one particle at a time.

Mobility stops when particles are used up, temperature warms up, or pressure decreases.

Alteration parameters included the stickiness coefficient of particle, geometric environment, and number of initial clusters.

The design involved a process of connecting lines between the intersection points, and exploding them at the attractors.
