Week of italian gastronomy The Italian Food Festival Group is pleased to present its 2016 event. The project is part of a broader initiative promoted by the Italian Government worldwide - the “Week of Italian Gastronomy –Settimana della Cucina Italiana nel mondo”- and is set out along the footsteps of the past successful initiatives held, since 2001, by Italian restaurants and food companies in Hanoi to promote the authentic Italian cuisine, products and culture and to increase awareness over quality and safety. THE BROADER FRAMEWORK: THE WEEK OF THE ITALIAN GASTRONOMY The year 2016 marks the kick-off of an initiative promoted by the Italian government with the involvement of the major institutional actors (Ministries of Foreign Affairs, of Agricoltural Policies, of Education and University, of the Economic Development, ICE) and relevant players in the food sector (Chamber of Commerce, Italian Federation of Chefs, Academy of Gastronomy). The “Week of Italian Gastronomy –Settimana della Cucina Italiana nel mondo”-is meant to engage Italian Embassies, chambers of commerce, culture institutes, communities and businesses in a massive and strategic promotional campaign worldwide to celebrate the Italian food excellence through a 360 degrees perspective. Get ready to have tradition, innovation, culture, quality, safety, sustainability explored in tastings, cultural events, movies, seminars, entertainments. the italian Food FestiVal groUp eVents Against this backdrop, the Italian Food Festival Group has joined hands with the Embassy of Italy and the Italian Chamber of Commerce (ICHAM) in order to coordinate the respective efforts and optimize visibility, media, contact and resources. The “Italian Food Festival” will open the Week of the Italian Gastronomy with two days of Italian food wine, music and wine on 19 and 20 November, move on along a week-long (20th to 25th November) program of Italian style entertainment, culture and gastronomy in the original Italian restaurants and shops around Hanoi, eventually closing the week with a special cozy and tasty evening “Italian do eat better” at Casa Italia in Le Phung Hieu on the 26th of November. a Close Up on the italian Food FestiVal on 19-20 noVemBer

The Italian Food Festival will be held in Tay Ho Water Park, featuring two days of pure Italian food, wine, music, culture and entertainment experience. The large area of the water park (normally closed at that time of the year) offers an ideal venue to host a significant number of participants. A wide covered area includes a huge equipped stage perfect for our entertainment program including live music, lucky draws, cooking competitions and more activities. All the facilities and staff of the water park are in an enclosed, safe and well equipped area, with a trained team, children playground and wide space for sponsor activities and vendor’s stalls. The water park can be easily reached from any neighborhood in Hanoi, is connected through several bus stops and taxi stands in the surrounding area and offers wide parking spaces.

Hanoi’s Old Quarter symbolizes the soul of this beautiful city. It is the oldest continuously developed area of the entire country and has a history that spans across 2,000 years. The area was crafted between the Lake of Restored Swords, the Long Bien Bridge, which structure characterizes French construction in Indochina, and a citadel wall. It later grew and evolved into a collection of communities made up of stilt houses. The Old Quarter began to acquire its reputation as an area dedicated to specific crafts in the 11th century. By the early 13th century, the communities had developed into craft guilds surrounding the palace walls. This resulted in skilled craftsmen migrating to the Quarter. Craftsmen with similar skills formed artisan guilds. Keeping with the strong community spirit, which Hanoian’s do so well, members of the same guild worked and lived together, creating a cooperative system for transporting materials to the business quarter. Due to inhabitants of each street coming from the same village, each street developed a homogenous look. Homes grew out of market stalls before streets were formed and stores were taxed according to the width of the storefront resulting in long and narrow buildings known as ‘tube houses’. The Old Quarter has a magnificent religious past. Craftsmen who moved to the Old Quarter from nearby villages brought their religious practices. This resulted in temples, pagodas and communal houses being transported to their new location. Each individual guild has one or two religious structures honouring their own patron saint and founder. Due to this, on veach street in the Old Quarter there is at least one temple on it. You may have to look hard to spot an ancient temple because many have been converted to shops and living quarters. Although this corner of Hanoi has been referred to by many as ‘36 Old Streets’, there are more than 36 actually streets. Many believe that the number 36 relates back to the 15th century when there might have been 36 guild locations where workshops would have been based. Others believe the 36 to a more abstract concept. The number nine in Asia represents the concept of ‘plenty.’ Nine times the four directions makes 36, which simply means “many.” There are now more than 70 streets in The Old Quarter (and counting). A majority of the street names in the Old Quarter start with the word ‘hang’, which translates to merchandise or shop. Hang Bac is one of the oldest streets in Vietnam and dates from the 13th century. ‘Bac’ means silver and this particular street started a silver factory under the reign of Le Thanh Tong (14691497). At the turn of the 18th century, the street attracted jewellers and money exchanges. Money exchangers prospered because currency at the time consisted of bronze and zinc coins. Streets have become extremely well known for their crafts. Hang Gai Street provides plentiful silk clothing, tailored embroidery and stunning silver products. Hang Quat stuns visitors with their colorful festival flags and religious objects. To Thinh, the street that connects the two, continues to sell pretty wood turners. Hang Dao Street, also one of Vietnam’s oldest streets, serves as a main axis running from north to south of the city. It splits the Old Quarter in two. ‘Dao’, the name of the street, refers to the pink of apricot blossoms, which are symbolic of the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. The Old Quarter is rapidly evolving but it continues to hold a precious legacy in Hanoi’s ancient past. Increases in restaurants, living space and schools have meant that craft workers now constitute nine percent of the area. However, local, national and international organizations continue to formulate plans in order to preserve the historic ambiance that is truly the heart of Hanoi’s character.
