here’s no question that September leads all months as my favorite time of the year, with the possible exception of the winter holidays. We leave the 100-plus-degree days and hot nights when North Texans hibernate , and enjoy the beautiful, enriching freedoms granted by milder weather.

One telltale sign that our best outdoor season has arrived is that many festivals are filling up the community calendars around town. Natural Awakenings will be attending no fewer than six inspiring community events during the months of September and October, including the granddaddy of them all, the State Fair of Texas.

We love the fun of both traditional and nontraditional celebratory events and look forward to expanding and enlightening our perspective on life at the same time. Fall brings fresh adventures with a new academic year for our youth; a new Bible study year for me; and new opportunities for us all to launch projects based on our latest insights and ideas. Something in the air just stimulates a new lease on life.

During this time, I often reconnect to old school-day sentiments, excited about registering, preparing for and attending workshops, programs and classes. I am filled with optimism and keen anticipation of the endless possibilities.

How wondrous that day-by-day, God gives each of us original manna, the ideas we need to help bring something wonderful into existence. It may be as simple as cooking a homemade meal, fashioning an outfit or expressing ourself in a letter to a friend. Whenever I hear people state that they are just not creative, I think, “Sure you are. You just don’t see it yet.”

Children innately understand the buzz of ongoing creativity, but as adults, we often neglect to acknowledge the infinite ways we creatively stretch ourselves, beginning with the ways we manage everyday life. Exercising our God-given imagination and inventiveness throughout life is vital to our health and well-being. In this month’s feature article, “Exploring Our Creative Side,” Judith Fertig explores just some of the myriad options we have for realizing the ongoing joys of our own creativity in this community.

This issue also brings insight into the newest approach to holistic health. In “Functional Medicine: Taking a Whole Toolbox Approach,” health writer Kathleen Barnes shares experts’ perspective on the importance of determining the root causes of disease, instead of just treating symptoms.

I’m also excited about the growing popularity of electric cars in North Texas; local writer Julie Thibodeaux talked with Neale Ferris, of the North Texas Electric Car Association, about the benefits. He also cites his top pick among the electric vehicles meeting family needs for cost-efficient and sustainable transportation.

Zipcars Now Available Through SMU Program

S

outhern Methodist University (SMU) has launched a new partnership with Zipcar, Inc., the world’s leading self-service car-sharing network, to offer a Zipcar program on campus that’s available to all residents of the Metroplex. The convenient transportation option is available at an affordable rate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for students, faculty and staff ages 18 and older, as well as members of the local community ages 21 and over.

Two vehicles are available, the Ford Focus and Honda Insight models, located in campus lots near Binkley Avenue at Ownby Drive. SMU members can join for a $25 annual membership fee, with rates on campus Zipcar vehicles starting as low as $7.50 per hour or $69 per day.

Gas, insurance, reserved parking spots, up to 180 miles of driving per day and roadside assistance are included in Zipcar rates. Cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days.

Participating members with smartphones may download the Zipcar mobile application to make reservations, lock and unlock the vehicles and honk the horn to help locate the vehicle. Members can also use Zipcar’s “Reserve a Zipcar” app on Facebook to view available Zipcars and make, extend or cancel a reservation all from their Facebook account.

National Black Marathoners Association Joins Dallas Marathon

he 43rd MetroPCS Dallas Marathon, to be held December 9, will see the addition of the National Black Marathoners Association (NBMA) Southwest Marathon. NBMA members of all athletic abilities plan to participate in each of the Dallas Marathon races. The NBMA serves as a vehicle for black Americans to meet in mass at a single race each year and provides scholarships to deserving high school distance runners.

Dallas Marathon weekend includes a marathon, half marathon, fiveperson relay race, the Mayor’s Race 5K, Presented by Cigna and Oncor, and the Southwest’s largest two-day health and fitness expo.

“This year’s course, with a start and finish downtown and stretching all the way to White Rock Lake, will give our visiting runners a true taste of Dallas,” says Kevin Snyder, chairman of the Dallas Marathon Board of Trustees. “We are honored to be selected by the members of the National Black Marathoners Association as their regional marathon of choice for 2012 and look forward to their participation in our event.”

Electric Car Company Works to Replenish Texas Forests ccording to the Texas Forest Service, recent tornados and drought have destroyed more than 500 million trees statewide, or 10 percent of the state’s total. In response, eVgo, a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc., has launched a program, EVs for Trees, to raise funds for planting and maintaining trees in Texas. eVgo has partnered with local tree planting organizations, retail energy providers and auto dealerships to provide drivers with an added incentive to test drive an electric vehicle (EV) through the EVs for Trees program. When customers test drive a 100 percent electric Mitsubishi “i” or Nissan LEAF before December 1 at a participating EVs for Trees dealership, the dealer will donate $25 to the Texas Tree Foundation in North Texas or Trees for Houston. Shark Expert McGuire to Speak in Dallas

Nothing Can Replace Pure Water, So Conserve It

D

allas-based EarthPeople and Shark Stewards, a San Franciscobased nonprofit that helps conserve our oceans through the protection of sharks, to host a talk by Shark Stewards Executive Director David McGuire, an awardwinning shark conservationist, marine biologist and documentary filmmaker, at 2 p.m., September 16, at the Museum of Nature and Science at The Science Place. This family-friendly event is great for kids.

Shark Stewards is also hosting a Party for the Sharks, from 5 to 7 p.m., September 15, at The People’s Last Stand, in Mockingbird Station. Shark-inspired drink specials, shark trivia, a sustainable/local menu and a discussion with McGuire at 6 p.m. about hammerhead and great white shark conservation are all on the menu.

Today, sharks face many challenges to their survival. As human greed drives them toward extinction, we must wonder if 25 years from now, Shark Week will run on The History Channel instead of The Discovery Channel. After more than 400 million years on planet Earth, sharks are being decimated by overfishing and the lucrative trade in shark fins. Shark fin soup, a delicacy symbolizing wealth and status in China, now sells for as much as $100 a bowl in that country. Fishermen cut off the fins, and then toss sharks back into the ocean, where they bleed to death.

Humans take the lives of approximately 73 million sharks a year and threaten one-third of shark species with extinction.

Brutal reports of thousands of lifeless, finless sharks found on the ocean floor reveal the recklessness of turning nature into a commodity. Because sharks mature late and produce few young, they cannot possibly reproduce at the same rate at which we kill them. By contrast, shark attacks only lead to between six and to 12 reported deaths of humans per year globally.

According to a Shark Stewards spokesperson, “There are many reasons why protecting sharks is not the cause of choice for the average Westerner. For one thing, sharks are scary. And the centuries-old practice of eating them, part cultural tradition, part big business, is mostly happening on the other side of the world. Most Americans don’t eat shark fin soup, so why should they feel responsible for the slaughter that makes it possible?

“Besides, with crises such as hunger threatening nearly 1 billion people worldwide and the dark economic cloud looming over the rest of us, we have more pressing concerns. Those are all the excuses many of us use. But we can no longer afford to make excuses. More than half of the world’s people depend on the oceans to provide their primary protein sources. If hunger is a global crisis now, imagine what will happen when those food sources disappear as the marine food chain is drastically altered.”

ith the turn of a handle, we get as much as we want, whenever we want it. So it’s easy to take clean water for granted and forget it is a carefully prepared product that must be purchased like any other product. Whether it’s used or wasted, we pay for every drop of water that flows through the meter.

Water is poised to become a more precious commodity in the near future, and although we may not be able to change the amount of water we truly need, we can easily control the amount of water we waste. There are many ways to reduce water waste (and money) by making a few simple changes in our lifestyle. Use the water you need, but please use it efficiently.

Practice water-wise landscaping and start with a plan.

Consider soil type, drainage, water availability and views.

Assess how the space will be used—for play, entertaining, gardening or storage. Plan areas for different amounts of watering—hand watering, frequent watering, occasional watering and natural rainfall. Develop a plan that can be installed in phases as budget and time permit.

Water efficiently to make every drop count. Watch for signs that plants need water, and then water only when necessary. When you do water, water deeply. This will save water and help plants develop healthier root systems, making them more likely to survive hot summers and cold winters. Water early in the morning when the sun is low and the wind is calmer.

For addresses ending an even number or having no number, water on Sundays and Thursdays; and for addresses ending in an odd number, water on Saturdays and Wednesdays.

Toilets older than 1992 use between three and five gallons per flush. Some very old commodes use up to seven gallons per flush. Installing a new high-efficiency toilet can save more than 4,000 gallons per person per year.

Check toilets for leaks, and repair them promptly. They frequently leak around the flapper valve, wasting 200 gallons or more per day Take shorter showers and install a low-flow showerhead that dispenses less than three gallons per minute.

Farmers’ Market Shopping Tips

W

hile many people are already experienced farmers’ market shoppers, some find the whole idea a little intimidating. Here are some “best practices” for how to get the most out of a trip to DFW farmers’ markets and enjoy the natural goodness of local produce.

Go prepared.

Before going to the market, look ahead at what’s coming up for supper. Take a list of needed ingredients, but keep an eye out for anything that looks particularly good, whether or not it’s on the list. It is easy enough to change the menu if something unexpected and great shows up at the market. If it needs to be cooked, make sure to make a plan for when to serve it, so it won’t get forgotten in the fridge.

Other things to bring include a handful of the plastic bags lying around the kitchen and a shopping bag. Bring a cooler so that heat-sensitive veggies do not wilt on the ride home.

Talk to the farmers.

The experience of shopping at a farmers’ market is enriched when you begin talking with the people that make the food. Some good topics are: what to look for when choosing a particular kind of vegetable; the farmer’s favorite ways of preparing a particular vegetable; when the (fill in the blank) might be ready for harvest; and the impact of the recent weather on the crops.

Don’t be shy, but don’t monopolize the farmer’s time, either.

Other aspects of etiquette include remembering that this produce (or meat, flowers, honey, etc.) represents the fruit of many hours of labor, most likely performed by the person standing before you. The utmost respect for their handiwork is required, even if the quality is not pristine. You don’t have to

buy it, but don’t make faces or negative comments.

If you are looking for organic produce but don’t see a sign saying that something is certified organic, ask whether it is conventionally raised or what they use for fertility and pest control. It can be a sensitive topic, so tread lightly.

Usually, the price is the price, but in some places haggling is acceptable. If you want to try it, ask first, “Are you open to talking about the price on those?”

For a large quantity of an item, arrange ahead of time for the farmer to bring you a lug of say, apples that have imperfections you may not mind cutting away if you are making sauce.

Pick a strategy.

Some people like to walk through the whole market looking at everything before deciding what to buy. Others hunt and gather their way through the market, buying as they go. Some like to buy most of their produce from one vendor, while others like to buy a little here and a little there. At a new market, it may prove most comfortable to plan ahead.

Become a familiar face.

Being a “regular” at a farmers’ market is fun. You’ll feel like you belong there and get to know the farmers and other regulars a little bit, and you’ll be known as a loyal customer—all nice things.

Talk it up.

It’s your community farmers’ market.

The more you and your neighbors go— and spend money—the stronger and more diverse the market will become. If your town gets a reputation as a place that supports local food, more new farmers will want to try farming there.

recent American Heart Association (AHA) survey reports that only 12 percent of American adults regularly practice the healthy-life trifecta of good nutrition, exercise and oral care. The most common excuse is a lack of time.

Of those surveyed, 80 percent said that eating at least nine servings of fruit and vegetables daily is a struggle. About 60 percent find it difficult to log the association’s recommended 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. At least 25 percent don’t brush and rinse twice daily and floss at least once daily.

Yet, 90 percent of Americans like the idea of improving their health. The AHA “My Heart. My Life.” initiative offers a straightforward set of solutions to help families understand how to make incremental changes that have long-term health impact (MyLifeCheck.Heart.org).

“Whether it is simply adding a 30-minute brisk walk to your day, eating a few more fruits and vegetables with meals, balancing your calories and physical activity to achieve a healthy body weight or creating routine oral care habits—it all contributes to an overall healthier lifestyle,” says Cardiologist Tracy Stevens, a professor of medicine with Saint Luke’s Cardiovascular Consultants, in Kansas City, Missouri.

Why Laptops Should be Renamed... and Relocated

T

he portable computers that serve as our business and communication “lifelines” may actually be thwarting unborn lives. Researchers suggest that laptop computer (LTC) users should avoid putting the devices directly on their laps, especially for extended periods of time.

Recent research reported in the journal Fertility and Sterility examined semen samples from 29 healthy male donors that used an LTC on their laps, near their testes. The scientists found that LTCs connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi resulted in decreased sperm motility and increased sperm DNA fragmentation.

A separate study, published in the journal Archives of Environmental and Occupational Health, noted that electromagnetic fields produced by LTCs likely induce currents within the body and can expose developing fetuses in pregnant women to unsafe levels. The researchers concluded that, “[An individual’s] ‘laptop’ is paradoxically an improper site for the use of an LTC, which consequently should be renamed to not induce customers towards an improper use.”

20-Second Trust Factor

F

irst impressions not only count—they are surprisingly accurate, at least when it comes to detecting whether a stranger is “made” to be compassionate, trustworthy or kind. New research by the University of California, Berkeley suggests that it can take just 20 seconds to recognize who is genetically so inclined.

Two dozen couples participated in the study and provided DNA samples. Researchers documented them as they talked about times when they had suffered. A separate group of observers that did not know the couples were shown 20-second video segments of only the listeners and asked to rate which participants seemed most compassionate, based on facial expressions and body language.

The listeners that received the highest ratings for empathy turned out to possess a particular variation of the oxytocin receptor gene known as the GG genotype.

Dubbed the “love hormone”, oxytocin is naturally secreted into the bloodstream and the brain, where it promotes social interaction, bonding and romantic love.

“People can’t see genes, so there has to be something going on that is signaling these genetic differences to the strangers,” says Aleksandr Kogan, lead author of the study. “What we found is that the people that had two copies of the G version displayed more trustworthy behaviors: more head nods, eye contact, smiling and open body posture. These behaviors signaled kindness to the strangers.”

Can Parents Teach Peace?

A

recent study suggests they can. Researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, and the University of Illinois system studied more than 5,500 students at 37 middle schools, focusing on this age group because aggressive behavior tends to escalate during the transition from childhood to adolescence. The researchers found that violent behavior in general increased throughout the three years of middle school, especially among girls.

The good news is that children whose parents actively advocate peaceful conflict resolution acted less aggressively, even if they attended more violent schools.

Creativity is often perceived as an unpredictable event, the product of an unexpected “Aha!” moment. But a pair of Michigan psychologists, Mareike Wieth, of Albion College, and Rose Zacks, of Michigan State University, decided to research the concept. They discovered that problems requiring a flash of illumination to solve are best approached during the time of day when thinkers are not actually at what they feel is their peak.

Reporting their findings in the journal Thinking and Reasoning, they assigned 428 students to fill out a questionnaire with 19 questions, including, “What time would you get up if you were entirely free to plan your day?” and “How much do you depend upon an alarm clock?”

Participants were categorized as morning, evening or neutral types and randomly assigned to a morning or afternoon testing session. Some problems were analytic in nature, others were inspiration-based. While the more logical type of problem solving showed no statistical difference, morning people scored higher on the insight-demanding challenges in the late afternoon, and vice versa.

Wieth and Zacks believe the results depend upon an inhibitory process that suppresses distracting information. It is thought that this system performs less efficiently when individuals are less alert, allowing random thoughts to enter the decision-making process, resulting in more creative thinking.

Robust RecordBreaking Centenarian In October 2011, a 100-yearold Briton, Fauja Singh, became the world’s oldest marathon runner, finishing the Toronto Waterfront Marathon, in Canada, in eight hours and 25 minutes. Last April, Singh went on to complete the London Marathon in seven hours and 49 minutes before announcing that he’ll continue running, but only in races from 5K up to half-marathons, and maybe even a vertical run up skyscraper steps.

Born in India, Singh moved to the UK in the 1960s, becoming the world’s oldest half-marathoner in 2010 at the age of 99, via the Inter-Faith Marathon, in Luxembourg. He has participated in the Olympic Torch Relay twice, in Athens in 2004 and London in 2012.

The London resident credits ginger curry, tea and being happy for his endurance. The multiple Guinness World Record-holder says, “The secret to a long and healthy life is to be stress-free. Be grateful for everything you have, stay away from people that are negative, stay smiling and keep running.”

hree years ago, Janine Joslin, a savvy business executive, set her sights on becoming a Dazzler, and today is a proud member of the Leawood, Kansas, chapter of community tap-dancing troupes. “I love to dance and perform, and I felt that had been missing from my own life,” she says. After a friend suggested it, Joslin showed up for her first practice ready to go, wearing tights and tap shoes.

Potential Dazzlers must prove they’ve learned the routines before being selected to perform for the public. Luckily, says Joslin, “I’m a quick study,” and soon took her place in this 50-and-up women’s group that likes to routinely Shuffle Off to Buffalo at area retirement facilities, church halls and special events.

Learning the stopand-go, Broadwaystyle routines such as Steppin’ Out and Millie is more of a mental challenge than aerobic exercise, comments Joslin. “The main thing is it exercises your brain.”

Performing for appreciative groups is a great feeling, she notes, and helps make the twice-weekly practices worthwhile. Just being around inspiring women has helped Joslin look at aging differently. She’s now applying her business skills to set up her troupe’s first website.

Joslin’s experience proves what many dancers, artists, writers, actors and musicians know: Active, hands-on, group participation in the arts is beneficial on many levels.

National Trend

In a recent study commissioned by the Wallace Foundation, Gifts of the Muse: Reframing the Debate About the Benefits of the Arts, the researchers found that, “People that engage in arts in a

group setting develop a sense of community as they exchange favors (such as meeting to learn lines or loaning painting supplies); identify themselves with a cast, music ensemble or choral group; and develop a sense of trust and expectations of reciprocity.”

It also noted, “Through the arts of ethnic traditions—such as classical Indian dance, Jamaican steel drums or Japanese raku ceramics—participants develop and maintain their cultural heritage and communicate their cultural identity to outsiders.”

Gateway Experiences

Most art disciplines can be experienced at any age. No previous training or ability is required, just a curious spirit and willingness to participate and learn.

Fun options range from a painting party, in which participants set up an easel and paint a canvas at Uncork’d Art, in Washington, D.C. (UncorkdArt. com), to African drumming at DrumRise, in Decatur, Georgia (DrumRise. net). “A drumming class is a great way to reduce stress, have fun, relax and reenergize, all at the same time; it has even been shown to positively affect your immune system,” say co-founders Amy Jackson and Colleen Caffrey.

Such activities allow us to dabble and explore amidst the power of a group and maximize the joy of artful endeavors, which many prefer to the cost of individual lessons.

One of the most accessible community arts is choral music, as it requires no special equipment. Singing in a group can also become a community tradition that gathers people of all ages and lifestyles in fellowship and celebration.

Since 1882, singing Handel’s Messiah has become an annual highlight for a Swedish wheat-farming community in South-Central Kansas.

For three months before Palm Sunday, 200 farmers, homemakers, college students and business owners from the Lindsborg area gather twice weekly to rehearse the three-hour piece (Bethanylb.edu/Oratorio_History.html).

Becky Anderson, the owner of Lindsborg’s Swedish Country Inn, who has sung for 41 years, points to a particularly thrilling moment during each performance. “There is just this exhilaration as the audience jumps to their feet yelling, ‘Brava, Brava.’ Golly, that’s fun.”

Chicagoans maintain a similar holiday tradition. For 35 years, free Do-It-Yourself Messiah concerts have provided a community-funded uplift (imfChicago.org). Thousands of audience members lend their voices to thrilling performances of this masterpiece, led by a world-class conductor and soloists and backed by an all-volunteer orchestra of local professionals and amateur musicians.

Storytelling is yet another community performing art that requires no special equipment. The National Storytelling Network (StoryNet.org) advances the art of storytelling through a national conference and local storytelling guilds.

The Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild, in Pennsylvania, meets once a month

at a local coffee house (LVStorytellers. org). Members include professional and amateur storytellers, poets, actors and newcomers that love to practice—or just listen to—this ancient art.

Strong community and cultural identity is forged on other stages, as well. The Community Actors Theatre, in San Diego, California’s, Oak Park, performs many plays written by local playwrights exploring themes in black culture (CommunityActorsTheatre.com).

For Calvin Manson, a local poet and playwright who teaches acting workshops, the nonprofit venue feels like a mom-and-pop outfit. “They have the raw talent that could be developed into something wonderful. People don’t

just learn to be actors and playwrights.

They learn to work together, to commit to a common struggle. When they leave, they know how to work with people, to be team players.”

Sometimes, a life change can open the door to a creative outlet. As a newly single 30-something, photographer Doug Plummer says that when he fell in with the Seattle contra dance scene in the mid-1980s, “It became my primary social life.” Derived from New England folk dance, two lines of dancers face each other and move to the rhythms of fiddle music.

The next level of volunteer arts participation may involve an audition and a greater commitment. At the same time, these pursuits offer prime opportunities to expand artistic skills and join in something bigger than one’s self.

Since 1873, the Cincinnati, Ohio, May Festival has served as a shining example of community showmanship (MayFestival.com). Chorus auditions are held in September, rehearsals begin in January and concerts routinely sell out by May. Music critic Nancy Malitz comments, “It’s that special, tiny sliver of the year when everybody stretches.

When hundreds of amateur singers accelerate the tempo by devoting every night to rehearsal and every day to thoughts of the concerts to come… when audiences look their finest, clap their loudest.”

Lawrence Coleman, a chorus member for 15 years, has found that singing and networking with other May Festival vocalists has paid off in surprising ways. “I’ve recorded and

Coleman also sings with the rhythm and blues gospel group Fo Mo Brothers, performing at area churches and the Midwest Regional Black Family Reunion.

Coleman remarks, “I have friends in the chorus from very different walks of life. We come together for the single purpose of making great music. People of differing backgrounds and schools of thought can do more than coexist. It’s confirmed for me that we can learn to celebrate our differences when we have a common goal.”

Even those that don’t feel inher-

ently artistic can find venturing into an art form unexpectedly rewarding.

Channeling an inner Elizabeth Bennett or Mr. Darcy is commonplace in Bay Area English Regency Society waltzes and “longways” dances, in Palo Alto, California (baers.org). Alan Winston, a computer systems administrator and veteran dance caller, observes that these patterned dances appeal to mathscience-logic-computer types. “It’s a great place for people that live in their heads to get out and be social,” he says.

Appropriately, the dances all feature choreography from Jane Austen’s era.

Depending on the theme of the dance— like the sophisticated Cyprians Ball or spirited Return of the Regiments Ball— the ambience may be elegant or rowdy, explains Winston. Dances are taught beforehand to music such as George Washington’s Favourite Cotillion, an 1808 tune performed by musicians playing a clarinet, piano and recorder. Many wear period costumes, while others come in jeans. Winston is usually bedecked in a wine-colored waistcoat with tails that he found on eBay. Plein air painters forsake the indoors to take their paints, easels and canvases outside. Plein-Air Painters of America regularly paint in groups in the fresh air and then hold an exhibition; annual workshops help teach techniques (p-a-p-a.com). At the recent seventh annual Florida’s Forgotten Coast event, in the state’s Panhandle, billed as America’s Great Plein Air Paint-Out, featured artists set up alongside amateurs eager to learn more (PleinAirfl.com).

Whatever one’s newly discovered or longtime treasure, individuals engaging in a group arts activity forge strong social bonds, keep ethnic arts traditions alive, learn new things in new ways and experience joyous personal growth. … All while creating something wonderful.

Telephone Play Date Can Be a Creative Experience

hose that find it challenging to make time for personal creative outlets such as writing, gardening, painting, scrapbooking, photography, playing music or cooking might want to try getting by with a little help from their friends. It could be just the trick to help make time for creative fulfillment. Scheduling a creative, virtual play date on the telephone with a friend provides gentle accountability and adds a dash of camaraderie to the creative process. Here’s how. n Set the date. You and a friend decide on the day, time and length of your creative play date. It can be as short as 10 minutes or as a long as an hour.

Spending as little as a few minutes immersed in the creative flow can add hours of happiness to the day. n Make the call. At the appointed day and time, one of you calls the other, and then you each very briefly share what creative project you will work on during your date. This should take no more than a minute or two. There’s no need to go into great detail. Sharing that you’ll be writing or making a collage or planting some flowers is plenty of information. This is about actually doing a creative activity, rather than just talking about it. n Take the pledge. The vow you make to yourself and each other is that when you hang up the phone, you’ll immerse yourselves in the creative process. That means no checking email, no doing laundry, no making phone calls, no hopping up to let the dog in or out and no suddenly giving in to a strange urge to clean out your fridge—no procrastinating at all. You simply assure each other that this next chunk of time is yours to truly enjoy by diving into the creative flow. n Set the timer. You may be surprised by how quickly time flies when you have no distractions and have given each other permission to just focus on and enjoy the creative activity of your choosing. Setting a timer allows you to fully engage without checking the clock to see when your time is up. n End the date. When the agreed upon time is up, the other person calls back for a check-in. This is a good time to quickly report how it went for you and set your next date. After you hang up the choice is yours. If you have more time and are enjoying the creative flow by all means keep going! If not, you can feel good about the fact that you and your friend helped each other to enjoy some dedicated creative time. It’s easy, effective and fun.

Functional Medicine Taking the Whole Toolbox Approach by kathleen barnes

Once called “alternative” medicine, then “holistic” or “complementary” and later “integrative”, the newest evolution is “functional” medicine, designed to search out the underlying causes of illnesses in order to carry out effective treatment.

“C

onventional medicine is like a carpenter that only has a hammer to work with, while functional medicine doctors are working with a full toolkit,” says the author of From Fatigued to Fantastic, National Medical Director of Fibromyalgia & Fatigue Centers, Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, of Kona, Hawaii.

Conventional medicine addresses symptoms instead of diseases, explains Los Angeles functional medicine practitioner Dr. Hyla Cass, author of 8 Weeks to Vibrant Health: A Take Charge Plan for Women. “It tends to treat the symptoms with more and more medications that cause a host of other side effects that also need to be treated and can result in declining health, rather than increased vitality.”

“Functional medicine, rather than simply ‘chasing symptoms’ while ignoring the causes, searches for and addresses environmental factors, nutritional deficiencies, genetic tendencies, biochemical dysfunctions and emotional and social stressors that can together

cause the development of symptoms,” adds Dr. Adiel Tel-Oren. He operates Eco-Health Clinics internationally (the U.S. site is in Minneapolis, Minnesota) and serves as president emeritus and professor of nutrition and functional medicine with the California-based University of Natural Medicine.

In every case, it takes some investigation to get to the heart of the problems, and the solutions can take many forms. “For example, depression, insomnia and obesity aren’t diseases; they are symptoms,” says Cass. “If we can find the underlying cause of these symptoms, we can address the problem permanently.”

An allopathic approach, on the other hand, would routinely recommend a pill to lower temperature for high fever, prescribe a synthetic pill to elevate mood in treating depression, or look to pharmacological anti-inflammatory drugs for simple immune reactions.

Tel-Oren is among those that link a vast number of illnesses to stress: “Diverse conditions such as fibromy-

algia, irritable bowel syndrome, heart disease, diabetes, mood and cognitive disorders, various autoimmune disorders, premenstrual syndrome, temporomandibular joint issues, chronic pelvic pain, interstitial cystitis, chronic low back pain, chemical and food sensitivities, allergies, asthma and cancer all seem to share common courses of formation. The common denominator for these disturbances appears to be chronic stress.”

Dr. Mark Hyman, chair of the Institute for Functional Medicine, in Lenox, Massachusetts, elaborates: “Functional medicine seeks to create balance in the body by looking at seven keys to achieving wellness: nutrition, hormones, inflammation, digestion, detoxification, energy metabolism and a calm mind. We work through the entire system, help people identify patterns and return the body to balance.”

Hyman is a strong advocate of nutrition as the basis for restoring balance to the body. “Food is the most powerful medicine we have, more powerful than any drug, more powerful than anything you’ll ever find in a pill bottle,” he says.

Teitelbaum notes, “Conventional medicine is basically run on economics, so doctors are too often influenced by drug company marketing messages masquerading as science that encourage expensive treatments, regardless of their toxicity.” In stark contrast, “Functional medicine instead looks for the lowest cost treatment that is supported by medical evidence.”

Conventional Medicine Case in Point

Fibromyalgia, for example, encompasses a basket of symptoms, usually beginning with overall body pain with specific pain points. Other common symptoms can include extreme fatigue, facial pain, irritable bowel syndrome, memory loss and brain fog, depression, numbness and tingling, palpitations, insomnia and headaches, including migraines.

“Until a few years ago, conventional medicine decided you were crazy if you complained of these symptoms,” advises Teitelbaum. “Then some expensive medications came out— promoted by $210 million a year in

advertising; so now, patients are instead being told to take medications with lots of side effects.”

The most common conventionally prescribed drugs for fibromyalgia target symptoms of insomnia, depression, nerve pain and inflammation. According to Teitelbaum, the vast majority of people treating with these medications continue to experience the same symptoms over a five-year period; only 25 to 35 percent report some improvement.

It’s difficult to determine how many Americans suffer from fibromyalgia because many go undiagnosed (the average time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis is five years).

Cure4Fibromyalgia.com estimates that 5 million Americans, or approximately 2 percent of the population, suffer from this disease.

Functional Medicine Alternative

“Functional medicine practitioners recognize that fibromyalgia represents an energy crisis in the body and use simple, appropriate and effective treatments with no harmful side effects,” says Teitelbaum. “Most often I use a SHINE protocol that I developed, based on 30 years of treating patients with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, with a 90 percent success rate.”

His is just one example of the way functional medicine would treat a difficult-to-diagnose and to treat disease. Cass uses functional medicine very effectively against depression, addiction and a host of women’s health issues. Hyman specializes in managing diabetes and obesity with the tools of functional medicine.

“If other medicines worked as well as treatments used in functional medicine, I’d use them, but they don’t,” concludes Hyman. “My Hippocratic Oath says I must help relieve suffering.

I can do that with the tools that functional medicine gives me.”

Banishing Wheat Belly The Drawbacks of a WheatDominated Diet by lee Walker

D

r. Wi l l i a m Davis, author of Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health, is a preventive cardiologist who has gone against the grain to expose yet another genetically engineered monstrosity, shedding light on the dark side of today’s commercial wheat crops.

What made you suspect that wheat might be behind numerous health problems?

When I recognized that 80 percent of the people that came to see me had diabetes or pre-diabetes, I began asking patients to consider removing all wheat from their diets. This made sense to me due to wheat’s high glycemic index. Foods made from this grain raise blood sugar higher than nearly all other foods, including table sugar. The next logical step was to reduce blood sugar by eliminating wheat—organic, multigrain, whole grain and sprouted—from anyone’s diet.

Patients that followed my simple directives and replaced the lost calories with healthy foods such as vegetables, raw nuts, meats, eggs, avocados, olives and olive oil returned three months later with lower fasting blood sugars and lower glycohemoglobin levels, which tests how well diabetes is being controlled.

Some diabetics became non-diabetics and pre-diabetics became non-pre-diabetic. On average, these people each lost about 30 pounds and experienced relief from arthritis and joint pains, acid reflux, migraine headaches, edema and irritable bowel syndrome, as well as other conditions. Some even reported that they no longer needed inhalers for asthma.

Initially, it seemed like these positive results were just odd coincidences.

However, based on the overwhelming number of incidences, I clearly saw that it was a real and repeatable phenomenon. I began systematically removing wheat from all my patients’ diets and continued to witness similar turnarounds in health.

Research related to agricultural genetics, an area largely ignored by medical doctors, and my own interviews with U.S. Department of Agriculture experts substantiated what my own anecdotal evidence has revealed.

Why has wheat suddenly become such a health threat?

The wheat we eat today is not the same wheat our grandmothers used for baking. In the 1970s, in anticipation of a global population explosion and world hunger issues, a well-meaning University of Minnesota-trained geneticist developed a hybridized strain of high-yielding dwarf wheat. By 1985, all wheat products were made from the altered dwarf strain, which now comprises 99 percent of all wheat grown worldwide.

By weight, this modern wheat is approximately 70 percent carbohydrate, in a highly digestible form of a starch known as amylopectin A, which converts more easily to blood sugar than nearly all other simple or complex food carbohydrates. Gramfor-gram, wheat increases blood sugar and causes insulin problems to a greater degree than even potato chips or table sugar.

Wheat, which now typically comprises 20 percent of all the calories we consume, is in hundreds of prepared foods such as instant soups, salad dressings, candy and granola. In 1970, this wasn’t true. Wheat was only in such foods as bread, rolls, cookies and cake, and it was in a natural form.

How does a wheat-dominated diet compromise health?

Eating a wheat-based cereal for breakfast, wheat crackers and pretzels for snacks, two slices of whole wheat bread for lunch and whole wheat pasta for dinner results in too much exposure to amylopectin A, and repeated spikes in blood sugar

levels. This leads to insulin resistance and cultivates the growth of visceral fat in the abdomen, which tends toward diabetes and other inflammatory responses.

Even worse, the gliadin protein in wheat is an opiate that stimulates appetite and addictive eating behavior (it does not relieve pain). All this plus the direct intestinal toxic effects of the wheat germ agglutinin protein in wheat add up to a destructive ingredient that spurs acid reflux, bowel urgency and irritable bowel syndrome, and leads to inflammation in various organs.

Describe how eliminating wheat has affected you.

Thirty pounds ago, I was an enthusiastic consumer of “healthy whole grains,” who relied on pots of coffee or walking and other exercise to maintain focus and energy. My cholesterol values reflected my wheat-consuming habits: HDL 27 mg/dl [milligrams per deciliter of good cholesterol] (very low), triglycerides 350 mg/dl (very high), and blood sugars in the diabetic range (161 mg/ dl). I had high blood pressure of 150/90 and excess weight around my middle.

Eliminating wheat from my diet reversed all of these conditions without drugs, including the struggle to maintain attention and focus. Overall, I feel better today at 54 than I felt at 30.

Are gluten-free foods the answer?

Commercially produced gluten-free foods made with tapioca, cornstarch or rice starch—all poor replacements for wheat—are destructive to the body.

Homemade or locally made gluten-free foods absent such ingredients are better, as are the free recipes available via WheatBellyBlog.com.

Millet, quinoa and amaranth, whole grains that lack most of the undesirable properties of modern wheat, are better but not necessarily safe in unlimited quantities because most people today have spent their lives overexposed to carbohydrates. Eating only small portions of these non-wheat grains is key.

Tips for Going Wheat- or Gluten-Free by betty murray or those that want to rid their diet of wheat and/or gluten for allergic or any other reason, here are a few tips to get started.

Gluten is almost always found in the low-nutrient, processed junk food available today. When done right, going gluten-free may result in a healthier diet if you stay away from gluten-free processed foods.

Gluten and gluten-containing grains do not possess nutrients that you cannot get from other food sources, such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds, meat, Betty Murray fish and fowl, as well as the other non-gluten grains such as rice, corn, millet, quinoa, amaranth and buckwheat.

Keep in mind that if you are not diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, in most cases, you will need to be eating gluten to obtain an accurate test.

Start slowly, removing gluten-containing foods over weeks, not hours. It will make the lifestyle change process easier if you think of it as a marathon and not a sprint.

Most of the grocery store is gluten-free if you shop the perimeter of the store, where the vegetables, fruits and meats are located.

Remove foods that are white or can be white: baked goods, crackers, pasta, bread, cookies, pastries, cereal and breaded foods. If you buy any of these, make sure that is says gluten-free on the label.

Get adventurous and try new foods and recipes. Healthy foods and glutenfree foods are tasty but you have to try them to find out.

Get help! If you have digestive, autoimmune, neurological or behavioral symptoms, testing is a good idea to rule out celiac and other, more serious diseases.

t’s easy for a dog or cat to slip out an unlatched door, open gate or even a window. Three million lost pets are picked up by animal control agencies each year, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The National Council on Pet Population Study & Policy estimates fewer than 2 percent of wayward cats and only 15 to 20 percent of wandering dogs find their way home again. Most of those that make it back have been identified and reunited through tags, tattoos or microchips.

About the size of a grain of rice (12 millimeters), a microchip is injected under the skin into the shoulder area of a dog or cat as a form of permanent identification. The chip itself has no internal energy source, so it will never wear out or run down.

Microchips work on a radio frequency identification system (RFIS) that operates on two main frequencies—125 kilohertz (in this country) or 134.2 kilohertz (internationally). A handheld scanner powers a low radio frequency

Because of our recent mild winter, we experienced an explosion in the bug population, including mosquitos. The biggest problem with mosquitoes is the egg. Nothing affects the eggs. It is only after they hatch that something can be done. Unfortunately, that something has turned out to be a very unpopular campaign of aerial spraying of toxic pesticide that has many residents up in arms.

There is a big window of time to go out and take preventive measures to make sure those eggs never hatch or get laid in the first place, because your yard has been mosquito-proofed. Mosquitoes bite in the early morning and early evening mostly, because they can’t take the heat. During the hottest part of the day, they are hiding in yards, waiting to come out when the sun is going down.

Here’s what to do.

Clean out gutters regularly. Mosquitoes live and breed in the debris, especially if wet. Clean bird baths regu-

larly. Cover firewood. Companies make special covers, but a tarp or large piece of plastic works just as well.

Trim bushes six inches up from the ground, six inches from the house and keep them as small as possible.

Trimming keeps sunlight coming through so it is too hot for them to live there. Trim all trees. Small lower branches provide a great canopy for mosquitoes. Trim the whole tree, so that sunlight comes through. Pick up all loose leaves, grass and organic debris on the ground, and don’t pile them up. That just creates a home for mosquitoes out of the sun.

Water between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Evening watering provides a breeding ground for the creatures. Twice-weekly watering is more than enough. Watering more than that may create standing water in which mosquitoes can breed.

Don’t pile up old wood or pots or any junk in general outdoors. It’s the

Also, keep fans outside and turn them on when for sitting outside enjoying the yard. Have one up high and one low around your feet. Remember that a mosquito must have a blood meal to lay viable eggs.

perfect place to get out of the sun and something is usually holding water in there as well. Don’t keep drain pots under your potted plants outside.

Make sure nothing around the house is holding any water. Dump it and turn it upside-down. Cutting down on irrigation won’t help if there is standing water. If there is a bowl of water outside for a pet, dump it every night. A pet needs fresh water every day, anyway.

Have a professional treat your yard with a garlic spray or the new IC3, from Essentria. Or, you can do a regular yard treatment using EcoSmart WP X. This should be done starting in April and last almost four weeks, depending on which one you choose. Spray regularly.

Don’t skip a spray because of a vacation. Mosquitoes don’t take vacations. If you have a mosquito spray system, switch over to the botanical version made by Essentria.

There are the Mosquito Motel (outside) and Fly Web (inside) that works with a light to emit carbon monoxide, like we humans do, that attracts mosquitoes. It runs 24 hours (it is electric and needs a plug) and continuously traps mosquitoes, as well as other unwanted bugs.

Landscaping can make a big difference. Plant garlic; it puts out a beautiful flower and you can eat it, too. Plant mint in pots, or they will take over a flowerbed. Geraniums and marigolds cut down on the mosquito population, as well. So does lavender.

Bamboo, English ivy and jasmine are beautiful, but are also very mosquito-friendly. I cringe when I have a yard like this. Keep the bamboo thinned out and ivy and jasmine trimmed. Don’t let them grow on the surface of the house.

It makes them difficult to treat and it destroys the mortar of the home.

Even doing all of this, you will never completely get rid of all of the mosquitoes. All these preparations just helps control them. So, use a personal mosquito repellant outdoors. Here is a homemade recipe from the makers of the garlic spray, Mosquito Barrier.

Early Convert is Sold On Electric Cars

A

few years ago, Neal Farris was looking for an old car to fix up as a fun project. However, as he was researching, the Dallas native learned that new fuel mixtures weren’t always compatible with old engines. That’s when a light bulb went on. Why not update a vintage model to the latest technology?

He researched the mechanics of converting an older model to electric. As a commercial photographer, he was comfortable with tinkering with equipment and grasped the instructions. Then he discovered a resource even better than an online manual; the North Texas Electric Auto Association.

“If I wanted to build an electric car, here’s a dozen guys I could ask for help,” says Farris.

He began attending meetings, where he met electric car enthusiasts from all walks of life. Members had converted everything from a 1964 Chevy Malibu to a John Deere tractor to electric power. As a result, today Farris is an electric car convert who commutes to work in a 1999 Volkswagen Golf that he brought back to life as an e-car.

“If you knew how simple it was to convert a car to electric, you’d be mad that there weren’t more electric cars on the road,” he says. As much as he loves his home-built electric vehicle (EV), he plans to upgrade and is on the waiting list for a Mitsubishi i-MiEV. Touted as a breakthrough in affordability, the allelectric i-MiEV starts at $29,000, and for a limited time, buyers are eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit.

Farris said he likes the i-MiEV because it’s distinctive. Many of the hybrids and EVs on the market look like every other compact car on the road, he said. The i-MiEV is built to stand out.

Sherri Herring, of Don Herring Mitsubishi, says they jumped at the chance to start selling the sporty EVs at their Irving and Plano dealerships in April. The cars, which come in colors like raspberry and

two-tone blue and white, can be detailed with custom decals such as e-symbols and stripes. So far, Herring said the cars have appealed to a younger generation that’s environmentally conscious, as well as middle-aged drivers wanting to reduce their gas bills.

The i-MiEV was rated as the Greenest Car of 2012 by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, because of its zero on-road emissions, light weight and high miles per kilowatt-hour rating.

According to Mitsubishi, power for the i-MiEV costs about $3.60 for every 100 miles traveled. That equates to about 112 combined miles per gallon (of gasoline) equivalent.

Electric cars are growing in popularity in North Texas. According to the North Texas Central Council of Governments, there are more than 400 electric or hybrid vehicles owners in the North Texas 16-county region and already more than 100 public charging stations operating across the Metroplex.

Farris, whose wife drives a hybrid, says many people hesitate to purchase electric cars because they want to be able to drive long distances. While he noted most electric cars are suitable for people that drive fewer than 60 miles a day, he advises pairing it with a hybrid or a gas-powered car for out-of-town driving. “Most people have two cars, there’s no reason one of them shouldn’t be an electric car.”

By driving an electric car, Farris says he saves money, reduces maintenance (no more oil changes) and helps the environment. He’s also hooked on how quiet they run. “Electric vehicles are the cars my kids are going to drive,” he says.

“It makes so much common sense.”

Dynamic Yoga and Fitness Studio by Yoga 4 Love was born from a long and fruitful yoga practice and whirlwind of a yoga teaching career from the owner and founder Lisa Ware, Registered Yoga Teacher. She and her Dynamic Team Staff along with her husband and co owner Richard Ware, decided that Red Oak was ready for something totally fresh and new. Most of our yoga classes are HOT yoga, and if you have yet to experience this wonderful practice you are in for a treat. Certified instructors will motivate you and help you set your sights high to achieve your goals, both in and out of the studio. We are Mind, Body Spirit based to nurture the whole you. We are not a gym. We are unique studio where you can commune with like- minded individuals.
