PORTUGAL WETSUIT GUIDE & WEATHER Surfing Portugal down South in the Algarve means lovely warm 21°C water in the summer, dropping to only 15°C in Winter. This allows for Shorts & Bikini or just a shortie wetsuit for July, August & September. For the rest of the year you just need a light 3/2 suit. The area gets very little rain, expect 30°C in the summer and t-shirt winters with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C. Central & Northern Portugal have amazing hot summers, 25°C to 32°C. It’s hard to do anything but surf and sit on the beach!. The evenings can drop to 15°C because of the proximity to the coastline and the Atlantic breeze. Winter can get surprisingly cold, with not as much cloud cover the nights can drop to 8°C in December/January. Water temperature is 18°C in the summer and drops to 14°C in winter. Up North towards Porto is 1°C or 2°C lower.

ALENTEJO Uncrowded Surf

If you are looking for a real escape, an adventure through local towns & villages, away from the tourism routes, then a Surf Holiday in the Alentejo is the one for you!

The Alentejo region is the South West/Central part of Portugal, above the Algarve and below Lisbon. It also spans the width of the country to Spain’s border but we don’t need to concern ourselves with the central part as there is no surf there!

The Alentejo remains largely undeveloped and far from the tourism mecca that is the Algarve or Lisbon. It is a world away from busy city life and home to some of Portugal’s most beautiful uncrowded beaches.

The name means “Beyond the Tagus”. The Tagus river runs from Spain across the centre of Portugal to its exit point at the Capital Lisbon. The main towns along the coastline are Comporta, Sines, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Zambujeira do Mar and Odeceixe. All delightful small traditional towns (Sines is a bit bigger and more industrial), and all surrounded by beautiful uncrowded beach breaks, bays and reefs.

AREA The Alentejo coastline from the northern town of Comporta to the Southern town of Aljezur is approximately 130 kms long and a 2 hour drive. So you can base yourself anywhere and be surfing a different beach every few hours! Without going into too much details here is a quick intro to some of the main towns...

Comporta - An hour from Lisbon. A small town known for its long white sandy beaches and surrounding rice fields. Has become a trendy spit lately with people from Lisbon escaping from the city for the weekend. Nice boutiques and tasty restaurants for when you are not surfing!

Sines- Historic old town with Nice old quarter. Head to the nearby village of Porto Covo for its beautiful beach and old architecture Vila Nova de Milfontes - Like white sandy beaches and clear blue water? Then this is your spot!

Zambujeira do Mar- Home to Portugal’s biggest summer music festival Festival Sudoeste, mid-August every year. A gorgeous picturesque beach town.

Odeceixe - Lovely village that sits on a hillside looking down onto the Odeceixe river and beach.

GETTING THERE The Alentejo region is 130 kms long so where you fly to depends on whether you are coming to surf the north or further south.

MARIA MAR SURF & GUEST HOUSE

The north part of the region starts with Comporta and the beautiful Carvalhal beach. A great beginners beach, which picks up nice swell for the more advanced in the autumn.

Further South past Sines is Sao Torpes, a long white sandy beach with a jetty at the north side which provides nice sheltered waves when the swell gets big. Further south is L-Point, one of the best waves in the region. Porto Covo is a lovely old town with Praia Grande and a few peaks that can provide a mix of beginners waves and awesome left- hand barrels.

The town of Vila Nova de Milfontes has plenty of waves to go around, including the long beach break Malhao, perfect for all levels. Congumelo is the most famous advanced wave in the town and can produce and excellent left hander.

Keep going south and you reach Zuambujeira do Mar, a beautiful sun drenched town and home to Portugal’s biggest music festival in the summer, it has a couple of hidden gems as well as a beginner/intermediate beach. Next stop is the hippy town of Odeceixe, and its surrounding empty beaches that include Carriagem, Amoreira and Monte Clerigo. Make sure to give the car a good wash after as you will be going through some good old dusty roads!

Cascais town is a lively mix of cafes, bars & restaurants. Its cobblestone streets open out onto a beautiful beach and marina - take in the sunshine by wandering around or just lounge in its beach front cafés admiring the views.

For those wanting to surf Cascais you will find a huge choice... the area has a mix of beach breaks, longboard breaks, point & reef breaks and both mellow & advanced surf breaks.

Travel west and you will find the beautiful Guincho beach, a fantastic surf beach with a great bar/restaurant - you may never leave this area. If you do then you will want to check out the beaches on the Lisbon side and discover all the breaks that make Cascais surfing such a great experience.

AREA The coastal town of Cascais (pronounced Cash-ki-sh) is considered the Monte Carlo of Portugal. It has a long history and enjoyed a particularly important development in the 14th century as it became an important stopping point for boats on their way to Lisbon.

Restaurants & Bars in Cascais - The centre of Cascais is made up of cobbelstone streets lined with shops, restaurants and bars. There is a large variety of restaurants to suit every taste (including 5 sushi restaurants!) and there are lots of bars that stay open till late.

Activities in Cascais - Apart from surfing the main sporting attraction is golf. Within a few minutes drive are 3 of Europes best golf courses: Quinta da Marinha, Oitavos & Penha Longa.

Surrounding towns - The most impressive tourist attraction nearby is the Sintra Palace. The area north west of Cascais is a protected National Park and contains the spectacular 19th century Palace. The park also contains an 8th century Moorish Castle and the Capuchos Convent, built in the 16th century.

Lisbon - You’ll arrive in Lisbon airport and drive 35 minutes south west to Cascais. However the city of seven hills is a city not to be missed. For sights and information log on to www.visitlisboa.com Football - Two massive local football teams divide the city – tickets for Sporting Lisboa or Benfica can usually be bought on the day at the stadiums.

WAVES Cascais is the perfect place to learn how to surf. The town is surrounded by many different types of beaches. The best beginners/intermediate surf beach is Guincho (pronounced Ginchu) 5 km’s north west of Cascias town. It’s a beautiful kilometre long stretch of beach.

Further north are two excellent beginners beaches Praia das Macas & Praia Grande. They are well worth the trip as they will take you past Cabo da Roca, mainland Europes most Western Point with a pretty impressive cliff top view.

Closer to Lisbon is Carcavelos beach - as the Stormriders surf guide call it: “the original and still one of the best Portuguese surf spots”. Its a very consistent beach break and home to some of Portugals best surfers.

Its also worth taking the trip across the river Tagus to Costa Caparica - driving over the spectacular Ponte 25 de Abril bridge leaving Lisbon behind you. Costa Caprica is a 30 km strip of coast with some of the most consistent surf in Portugal.

A few hundred metres East of Cascais is Monte Estoril beach which has a small righthand wave that breaks regularly. There is a car park at its base accessed from a slip road above.

Follow the road east of Cascais along the Tagus river (Tejo in Portuguese) towards Lisbon and you will come across beach after beach offering a vast amount of surf: Bica is a great longboarders break on Sao Pedro beach. The beach has a few surf bars and restaurants and is a great place to spend the day.

ERICEIRA

The Mecca of Portuguese Surf Ericeira (pronounced Eery-Say-Reh) is the surf capital of Portugal, often described as a ‘Surfing Mecca’. Situated only 40 minutes drive from Lisbon and 30 minutes from the airport , it’s a fantastic place to learn how to surf and for the more intermediate and advanced there is so much choice you’ll feel like a kid in a sweet shop!

Ericeira is a delightful picturesque village that sees an old traditional Portuguese way of life mixing with the new modern surfing culture. The area has 12 surf beaches within the 8km stretch of the town, which has led it to become the number one place to surf in Portugal & in Europe.

In February 2011 Ericeira was awarded the title of Europe´s first ‘World Surf Reserve’. It is a major achievement and a testament to the area (there are only 3 in the world, the other 2 are Manley Beach in Australia and Santa Cruz in the US).

AREA Its hard to capture the beauty of Ericeira in a few words. You have to come and see for yourself! The town is unlike any of the usual overpopulated tourist towns that can be found by the sea in Europe. Instead you will experience a beautiful traditional old Portuguese village, where fishing has been the main focus for centuries. The old town sits on top of huge magnificent cliffs that over look the Atlantic below. Below each cliff are stunning beaches each blessed with some of the best surf in Europe. A surf culture has grown as a result and infuses with the old traditional way of life to create a unique balance where old and new sit side by side perfectly.

Activities in Ericeira - The Tourist Office in the centre of town will be your best friend and has a list of all the surrounding Golf courses (including the PGA Championship course Penha Longa) - www.portugalgolf.pt Restaurants & Bars in Ericeira - Portugal is well known for it’s delicious seafood and Ericeira’s fishing traditions have spawned some great restaurants. Surrounding towns - Dont’ miss the monastery in Mafra on your way up from Lisbon, Sintra makes a great day trip, with its spectacular Pena Palace. 30 minute south of Ericeira are the coastal areas of Cascais & Estoril, the Monte Carlo of Portugal.

And for the more adventurous you have the world class Coxos. That’s just naming a few, there are too many surf breaks to mention here!

Don’t forget to explore further up the coast - 25 minutes away is Santa Cruz and an hour away is Peniche, home to the World renowned Supertubos and host of the Rip Curl Pro since 2009. 30 minutes south of Lisbon is the Cascais coast with the famous Praia do Guincho surf beach. And when north winds are blowing you can venture further south towards Carcevelos beach and the other surf spots along the Lisbon coast.

You will mostly surf along the West coast on the stunning surf beaches of the National Reserve parkland (protected from development). It is one of Europe’s best kept secrets. AREA If you have surfed all week and still have some time to explore then you have come to the right place. Lagos benefits from being a city despite its population of only 20,000. It is a beautiful charming place that has avoided the massive high rises that feature in many other coastal towns in the Algarve. An ancient maritime town with more than 2,000 years of history, Prince Henry the Navigator set Lagos up as Portugal’s capital in the 15th century and it was from here that Portugal began to explore and discover the rest of the world.

Activities in Lagos - Lagos has some beautiful cliff’s with coves at the base that are perfect for sunbathing and just general sun holiday relaxing. You can go snorkelling/diving in one of the main coves and underground caves. Going out in boats and Dolphin watching is also very popular. There are also 4 terrific golf courses within 18kms of Lagos. There are 2 water parks within 30 minutes drive of Lagos.

Surrounding Area - Nearby is Sagres, a small surf town, 25 minutes drive West and surrounded by many beaches worth discovering. The coastal area stretching 80 kms north from Sagres is protected parklands and so no high rise development will take place along this coast of the Algarve.

Restaurants and Bars in Lagos - Some of our favourite restautrants include the local and traditional Cozhna do Petisco, the cavernous and cool Mullens, O Cantinho Algarvio and O Galeao. Make sure to check out the Nah Nah Bah (which also serves great food), The Irish Rover, The Three Monkeys and Zanzibar.

THE SURF EXPERIENCE

WAVES Surf Lessons often occur at the areas best and most reliable surf beaches, Praia do Amado and Praia do Amoreira, 20-30 minutes from Lagos. Depending on conditions you may surf at any number of surf beaches nearby such as Maia Praia, Castalejo, Arrifana, Zavial, Cabanas and Porto de Mos. The beginner’s lessons are taught in waist deep water riding the white water only. If you are already experienced the instructors will take you further out and help you develop your technique on bigger waves.

Lagos is a year round surf destination thanks to its position at the corner of the Algarve. It has the warmest water in Portugal and the winter temperature is warm enough for t-shirts.

Within Lagos is the town’s long golden sandy beach that seems to go on forever, Meia Praia, a very safe beginners surf beach, but not always reliable.

Further Afield Head further West and after 20 minutes you arrive at a crossroad, take the turn South West and after a few minutes you reach the laid back surf town of Sagres where you will find breaks such as Tonel, Mareta, Beliche and Zavial.

Alternatively take the right turn and after 10 minutes you will reach a great beginners /intermediate surf beach Praia do Amado. Close by is one of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches Praia da Bordeira. Further North is the world class surf break in Arrifana and beginners beach Amoreira.

LISBON

Culture, History, the Age of Discovery & Surf Lisbon, or Lisboa, is the capital of Portugal and means “enchanted port”. Lisbon is surrounded by dozens of beaches that offer some of the best surf in Europe. Thanks to its position on the Atlantic Coast Lisbon gets some of the best swells in Europe making it a perfect surf holiday destination.

Lisbon’s most famous surf spot is Carcavelos, a very reliable beach break that suits all standards.

As they say the city was founded by the Phoenicians and grew in importance thanks to the River Tagus which flows across the country into Spain. It was also ruled by the Moors, the Arabs and eventually the Christians.

In the late 1400’s the city developed the Caravel ship that allowed it sail faster and carry more than its rivals. Vasco do Gama set off and discovered the sea route to India and so the Age of Discovery began.

The city was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1755 and rebuilt over time to become one of Europe’s most charming cities.

WAVES However, dozens of beautiful white sandy surf beaches are only a 5 minute car drive away. The surrounding beaches pick up all the swells the Atlantic have to offer making it one of the most consistent surf destinations in the World.

Closest to the city would be Caxias & Santo Amaro de Oeiras, a beautiful beach that on its day can produce perfect lefthander barrels.

Oeiras is more of a winter wave and is one of the best waves in Portugal. Next stop is Carcavelos, probably Portugal’s most famous wave, which regularly hosts National competitions and suits all standards, a perfect place to learn and a great place to score some fast beach barrels with multiple peaks along the 1km stretch of beach.

There are many other spots along the coastline that runs from Lisbon out to Estoril & Cascais. Long boarders will love Sao Pedro and short boarders will thrive on spots like Poca and Sao Joao. Then on the other side of Cascais there is the stunning long white sandy Guincho beach.

Home to Europe’s Best Beach Breaks Home to some of Portugal’s most consistent surf beaches, Peniche lies 90km’s north of Lisbon (1 hour’s drive from the airport). The town is know as being home to arguably Portugal’s most famous wave - Supertubos. On the other side of town is an area called Baleal and its beach Cantinho da Baia, one of Portugals best beginner and intermediate surf beaches - one of the main reasons people come to surf Peniche.

A surfing holiday in Peniche will be all about spending time surfing, relaxing on the beach and chilling out at Bruno’s beach bar amongst others. The accommodations are all generally a short stroll from any beach. Its an ideal surf holiday option for groups, couples or solo travellers.

The WSL Surf tour comes to Peniche every year in October for the Rip Curl Pro. It’s always a great week, watching the worlds best surfers such as Kelly Slater & Gabriel Medina battle it out to win the event. AREA Peniche is located in western Portugal, about 90 km north of Lisbon and is the largest fishing port in Portugal.

Activities - Besides the obvious activity of surfing, there are plenty of other interesting things to do. The town’s Fortress is a local and national landmark. The fortress is now a Museum dedicated to the memory of those that have been incarcerated during the time of political prisoners in Portugal before the 1974 revolution. One of the most interesting things to do is an afternoon boat trip to the beautiful Berlengas Islands - it’s also a great area to scuba diving and observe marine fauna as well as shipwrecks.

Surrounding Area - 20Kms away is Praia d’El Rey Golf and Beach Resort were you’ll find a world class 18 holes awarded golf course (Praia D’El Rey Marriott Hotel won “Portugal’s Leading Resort” at the 2008 World Travel Awards). In the village of Bombarral is one of the largest Asian Buddhist garden in Europe at Quinta dos Loridos. Also next to Bombarral village is a traditional Portuguese vineyard.

Restaurants and Bars - In Peniche just outside the city centre you’ll find the excellent restaurant Tasca do Joel. With it’s gourmet shop where a remarkable wine, Port and Portuguese and Spanish delicatessen can be found at a surprising price, this is definitely a place to visit - its address is 73 Rua do Lapaduço. Closer to Baleal you will find many delicious sea food restaurants including Amigos do Baleal, Baia Secreta and Baleal à Vista. There are numerous bars but the best one is Bar do Bruno right on Baleal beach.

The best thing about the Peniche & Baleal peninsula is that the beaches face both north and south.

The WSL World Tour comes to Peniche every year in October and is a great time to visit if you want to watch the worlds best surfers battle it out to win.

The areas main surf beach is called Cantinho da Baía . The spot is famous for its consistency and for being ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. The beach stretches 4kms further west with many spots to surf - a great place to get away from crowds.

On the other side of the Baleal headland is Prainha, another great protected surf spot for beginner and intermediate surfers. And next to this is Lagide , a reef break and one of the best surf spots in Portugal if you have big swell and southerly winds. It’s a long perfect left with a shallow reef at low tides great for intermediate/advanced surfers.

On the other side of Peniche (south) is the area’s and arguably Portugal’s most famous break Supertubos . It’s a powerful wave breaking in very shallow sand bar, advanced/pro surfers only! Other waves such as Molhe Leste, Consolação, Porto Batel and Almagreira are all close by giving every kind of alternative including many uncrowded areas; a great area to explore and Surf Portugal’s best waves!

And don’t forget you can head south and surf Ericeira - less than an hour’s drive away.
