Jared works hard to continuously improve and serve Oklahoma State’s campus. He often takes on more than is required to make sure everything gets done which can lead to many dishes being on his plate. This never seems to be an issue for Jared and his determination to improve OSU’s campus and Residential Life were brought on by a few life lessons he’s picked up. “Someone has to do it, so why not you?” and “Your talent is your essence, make sure to use it and changes will happen” are the mantras Jared uses to live and serve OSU. Jared is a third generation Cowboy and he wanted to leave his mark on this campus, so he picked Res Life to drive his focus. He mentioned that he has had major support from his cohorts and advisors. They have instilled values in Jared to help him pursue OSU’s mission of making every hall a home.

Jared serves his campus by working as the RHA Director of Administration and Finance (DAF). He manages RHA accounts and helps RHA Senate make informed choices when they grant money to Community Councils and other campus organizations. For this job, Jared also take the notes during Senate and Executive meetings and sends them out to everyone involved in RHA. Another part of his job is to write transfer memo’s, communicate between halls, readily be available for one on one’s with department heads, and keep an orderly list of all community council executives events and meeting times.

Jared was also put in charge of Staff to update them on RHA happenings. Jared, the Fall RHA/NRHH banquet, where he had to plan again, decided to plan the Spring RHA/NRHH all of the awards, food, and location of the Banquet, where he designed 23 awards and 18 banquet. Treasurer Meetings: Every Community Council officer besides the treasurers had a biweekly meeting with an RHA officer to discuss events and new happening on campus. Jared took it upon himself to create and host a treasurers meeting every other week to help the 15 community council treasurers learn to budget, work within the Reslife system, and hear news from all around campus. They became a little family and most went on to become Student Staff members or RHA Officers thanks to the advising and encouragement Jared gave them throughout the year. One treasurer even wrote an OTM about Jared and all he had done for them!

Constitution Committee Jared also serves on the RHA Constitution Committees where he heads the committee. It started off slow but Jared has taken the committee by storm. He has met with various department heads to decide the right course to amend the RHA Constitution, By-Laws and Election Board Rules. Jared wrote 7 pieces of legislation for the RHA to fix their election rules, judicial system, budget, fix problems from the new directorship change, and align the 3 documents

Jared is a large part of the Lynn and Frances Jackson Chapter at Oklahoma State University. He has taken part in bid writing, induction, and in selection committee. He played a major role in helping the president, Kaylee Boice, when she did not have an executive team. He was an unofficial executive. He is always willing to come early and stay late. He has also been on NRHH’s Constitution Committee for the past two semesters. The Lynn and Frances Jackson Chapter has been working to improve itself, and Jared has played a large part in that mission. Jared served as the head of Recognition Committee, and he has planned monthly writing parties to try and make the Oklahoma State campus more involved with OTMs. With his determination OSU had 78 OTM submission. He also met with the Director of Residential Life to add that every Hall staff must submit one OTM a month, making 21 more OTM submission per month, which was adopted and will be part of the curriculum this coming year. Jared ran for NRHH President and won with a 16 page bid with all of his ideas for the organization including: more chapter programs and retreats, more outreach, more chapter attendance at conference, and spread NRHH’s name across Residential Life. Jared was also NRHH’s biggest recruiter getting 18 people to apply and 14 becoming candidates! With this Jared was awarded the most active member both in the Fall and Spring semesters.

Jared Volunteered for many NRHH Programs including: Safe Trick or Treat, OTM Parties, Bid Writing Parties, NRHH flag football, Homecoming Sign Decoration, Random Act of Kindness Week, Johnny Appleseed Day, Stillwater Trash Off, Academic library study nights, Induction, Holiday Party, Traditions Night Spring 2016, Traditions Night Fall 2015, Donut’s for Desk clerks, Writing Valentine’s for the elderly, Spring Break Bash, Taco’bout Tutoring, Earth Day tabling, Shopping for many events, and recruitment.

Community Council Jared played an active role in his hall Booker-Stinchcomb’s community council. He attends every meeting and event the hall throws including a good chunk of the RA programs.

He helped the community Council executive team grow into their positions and plan their first few events.

Alternative Spring Break Jared spent his Spring Break in Atlanta, Georgia doing Community Service for a community center where he helped build homes, organize classrooms, rebuild a local art garden, tutor children, and landscape at an elementary school. They worked for 3 days that week. Jared continued to show his leadership and recognition by creating thank you cards for the 3 advisors on the trip and got everyone to sign them.

American Institute of Chemical Engineer’s Jared is an active member in OSU’s AIChE Chapter, where chemical engineer’s come together to create connections, learn more about their degree, and attend seminar’s presented by prospective companies. Jared is attends every meeting, volunteered at the career fair, and assisted in setting up many of their socials.

Society of Petroleum Engineers SPE is an organization on campus that allows students to attend meeting where Natural Gas companies come and teach about the oil business. Jared has been active in the society by helping set up meetings, attending their philanthropy golf tournament, and attending a conference April 2016.

Paddle People Jared is a member of OSU’s Paddle People, a spirit organization that rallies, chants, and stirs up the crowd at OSU football and basketball games.. Jared sports a Darth Vador themed costume during the football games wearing an orange Darth Vador helmet an OSU cape and cowboy boots and all black shirt and pants to frighten the enemy team. In early November, Jared was elected as treasurer of the paddle people and has already made a huge difference by making a new filing system and budgeting system for the group.

NACURH 2015 NACURH 2015 was Jared’s first conference experience and he went in full force. Jared managed to make many connections outside of the SWACURH region. He took tons of pictures and traded numerous spirit pins.

He stayed positive for the entire 14 hours of driving it required to get to NACURH at North Dakota State University. During the conference, Jared formed a bond with the delegation and a true passion for residential life leadership. Jared plans to submit programs for NACURH 2016, so he will be able to share things he has learned throughout his experiences in the halls. He also has helped edit the 3 bids OSU will be submitting to NACURH.

No-Frills 2016 Jared attended No-Frills 2016 as the NRHH-CC-IT. Jared wrote 3 bids for this conference: Advisor of the Year, NRHH Building Block, and NRHH President of the Year. He represented OSU well by attentively asking questions and providing great points of discussion. Jared tried to bring some frills to the conference by constantly trying to lighten the mood and cheering on anyone who won during the award ceremony. Jared assisted everyone in formatting and OSU won 3 awards.

OKRHA 2016 At SWACURH, OSU offered to host Oklahoma’s sub-regional conference OKRHA, Jared took lead on planning the conference by contacting schools to attend, assist in making the schedule, and gathered 9 people to present programs during the conference. Jared presented 2 programs, one on OTMs and another about Late Night Programming.

SWACURH 2015 Jared attended SWACURH 2015 and served as the delegations Spirit NCC, leading them in chants, making sure the delegates knew what to do, and upheld traditions. Jared also wrote and choreographed OSU’s rollcall, made their spirit duck, and designed their spirit pins. Jared also served as the NRHH proxy in joint boardroom. Jared also wrote the bid for Volunteer of the Year which made it to the top 2.

Next Year Jared is going to the NRHH President of the Lynn and Frances Jackson Chapter.

This year alone as President elect, Jared has already met with department heads to make OTMs a part of the new Student Staff curriculum, formed 4 committee’s, ran a selection committee, and held executive meetings to begin planning next year. Jared was hired on as a New Student Orientation Housing Staff member for the summer, where he will be introducing incoming freshmen to residential life.

Jared was also hired as an Academic Mentor for OSU’s Residential Life, where he will be providing programs to teach students about academic achievement, time management, and study skills. Jared shows his constant dedication to OSU residential life and the improvement of past standards RHA and NRHH have had.

To the NACURH Awards Selection Committee, It is my great honor to recommend Jared Kimbrell for Student of the Year. Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to work with Jared in a variety of different roles. Primarily, I have worked with Jared in his role as the RHA Director of Administration and Finance, but I have had the opportunity to see him interact with NRHH and Housing as a whole.

Focusing first on his role with RHA, I have been nothing but impressed with Jared and his dedication to the organization and the quality of work that he does. While many people would look at his position and expect him to take minutes and track financial exchanges, Jared has served as an incredible resource for the entire RHA team and even myself. His knowledge of RHA, NRHH, and how they function at OSU is unparallelled. His passion for leadership at OSU is what drives him to be successful in all the positions he holds.

While Jared’s primary role has been with RHA, he has dedicated an equal amount of time to NRHH and its success. At the beginning of last semester, Jared volunteered to serve as interim minute taker for the chapter, worked closely with the NRHH president to ensure marketing and general business was accomplished, and was instrumental in the success of planning events. This resulted in him receiving the most active member award at the end of the semester banquet. Even as other executives were added to the organization, Jared continued to have a high level of involvement by promoting OTM writing across campus, actively recruiting new members, and running for NRHH President. Recently, he served as one of the NRHH-CC-ITs at the No Frills conference. As well as participating in boardroom at the SWACURH conference earlier in the Fall semester.

While Jared has dedicated an incredible amount of time to Housing based leadership opportunities, Jared is a driven and determined student as well. Jared remains active in organizations close to his major like AIChE and the Petroleum Engineering Society. While his extracurricular activities are time consuming on their own, Jared also has a difficult course load of engineering classes. Even though engineering is a difficult major on its own, to balance the course work and Jared’s level of involvement is truly impressive.

It is for these reasons and many more that I support and recommend Jared Kimbrell for Student of the Year. I truly believe that Jared encompasses all of the attributes of a well involved and academically successful student. His commitment to RHA and NRHH on a campus, regional, and national level is inspiring, and his dedication to his academic success is equally as impressive. I cannot wait to see what he accomplishes next year while serving on staff as an Academic Mentor for Residential Life and serving as the National Residence Hall Honorary President. He embodies the ideals of authentic leadership and a true commitment to excellence in all areas of student engagement.

NACURH Awards Selection Committee: The Southwest Affiliate has many outstanding students that we would love to brag about.

However, for Student of the Year, we are only allowed one. At No Frills 2016 in February, our voting members selected that one student. It is an honor to present Jared Kimbrell from Oklahoma State University as the SWACURH Student of the Year.

Jared has shown an incredible commitment to his academics and his campus’ organizations. He has worked to create applications for awards to recognize outstanding members of OSU’s RHA and provided leadership to the in-hall treasurers through his position as the RHA Director of Administration and Finance. Jared has also played a large role in his campus’ NRHH chapter by leading the recognition committee and acting as the NRHH Representative In Training at SWACURH 2015 and No Frills 2016.

Jared’s involvement does not end with residence life. He is an active member of both OSU’s chapters for the Society of Petroleum Engineer’s and the American Institute of Chemical Engineer’s. Like many universities in the Southwest, Oklahoma State shares a love of football. Jared reflects this passion through his involvement in OSU’s “Paddle People”, a spirit organization present at every football game, wearing noticeable costumes and beating on the walls with wooden paddles.

Oklahoma State University has increased membership and involvement in their NRHH chapter, increased the number of bids submitted, and increased their presence at conferences. Overall, OSU has steadily become more involved with the region in this past year. This is, in part, due to the contributions of students like Jared. Jared committed his time and energy to encouraging others to become involved and recognizing every deserving person. Based on this involvement and dedication, our voting members saw SWACURH’s Student of the Year.
