NRHH National Board Aaron Ringsby, IACURH Associate Director for NRHH NRHH Member of the Year Nominee May 12, 2016

Dear NRHH National Board, Monica Maly is an NRHH Superstar. She is an ambitious and creative member of the Golden Buffalo Chapter at CU-Boulder. For the 2015-2016 affiliation year, Monica has served the chapter as the Vice-President of OTMs and technology. Within this role, Monica has created several new initiatives to better the OTMs process within the chapter and to encourage more people to write OTMs. However, Monica takes the values of NRHH beyond her role as an executive of an NRHH Chapter. She truly embodies the values of NRHH by incorporating everything that NRHH stands for into her daily life, passions, and other student involvement. Within her Vice-President role, Monica has started new initiatives that have greatly impacted the Chapter of the Golden Buffalo’s OTM process. Monica created an excel spreadsheet that tracks OTMs, the campus winners, and feedback for the chapter. The feedback section has greatly increased the submissions and quality of the OTMs for the chapter. Monica reads every OTM that is submitted to the campus level and records feedback for writers. At the close of the cycle, Monica e-mails this feedback to writers. This has allowed CU’s OTM writers to understand OTMs more. Additionally, Monica created a new template for announcing OTMs on the CU NRHH Facebook page. She has continued this recognition for OTM writers by recognizing the Campus Winners through a recognition newsletter, which is sent out to the Department of Residence Life and the Resident Advisors. Additionally, she works with the Department of Residence Life to send personalized cards to the campus winners every month. All of these initiatives have allowed for CU’s OTM submissions to almost double. Monica brings the values of NRHH to her every day life which, in my opinion, is the mark of a true NRHH Member of the Year. Much of Monica’s involvement outside of NRHH is working as the Director of Williams Village Programming and as a Stampede Mentor. Within both of these roles, Monica serves as a mentor for other students. Monica brought her passions for recognition and service to her mentees. Apart from talking about the importance of both of these aspects, Monica modeled the way by doing various recognition and service activities as well as putting on largescale recognition and service programs for all of Williams Village, which holds 1/3 of CU’s on campus population. Through her other roles, Monica is spreading the importance of the values on her surrounding community. Lastly, Monica’s passion for IACURH and NACURH is unfounded. I have not met many people that believe in the mission of this corporation as much as Monica does. This passion is infectious, so much so that when I was compiling the bid feedback after bid review, my NRHH Presidents commented on how Monica stuck out to them at IACURH 2015, out of everyone within the IACURH region, with how much passion she has for this corporation. Monica is focused on giving back to IACURH and NACURH through presenting various programs, including a Top Program at IACURH 2015, writing award bids, and she volunteered for the three-day IACURH No Frills Conference at CU-Boulder this year. Monica is the ideal NRHH Member. Not only does she go above and beyond for her chapter, but she embodies and spreads the values of NRHH to everyone around her. On Behalf of the Intermountain,

I. Increase OTM submissions by 50%. II. Increase of regional and NACURH winners by 50%. III.Create a document that shows the winners. IV. Create an NRHH website. Co/Wy 2016 Monica serves on both the NRHH and RHA Executive Boards. In NRHH, she is the Vice President of OTMs and Technology. In that VP role she is in charge of the campus OTM process, as well as the NRHH website and Facebook page. In RHA, she is the Director of Williams Village Programming. In that Director role she is tasked with putting on large scale programs for the entirety of Williams Village. At fall training for both organizations she created these to-do list. “NRHH used to have pillars but instead of the dated distinct pillars that used to be, the Golden Buffaloes have Monica. She brings organization and stability to everything. She is the pillar of support in which we lay the foundation of our success. I don’t know what I would do without her. ”

I. OTM submission has skyrocketed this year! Due to Monica’s diligent work in connecting with all those that write OTMs the rate has almost doubled. She connects regularly with the RHA Director of Leadership Development, who supervises the Hall Council VPs of Recognition and Service, and all the Resident Advisor Recognition Leads who are required to write OTMs, as well as the NRHH membership. II. Monica’s background in writing OTMs has allowed her to create a handful of useful resources, while her position on the IACURH OTM Selection Committee has given her exposure to exceptional OTMs. These experiences are what enable her to repeatedly send high caliber OTMs to the region, which is how the rate of winning OTMs has almost tripled! III. Monica’s multi-page spreadsheet creation helps the Golden Buffalo Chapter accomplish many of their recognition initiatives. IV. This to do is still a work in progress. However, all of Monica’s research about NRHH websites will be passed to her successor for continued pursuit.

Monica strives to put on unique programs that reach a variety of residents. With the combination of her new program ideas and the traditional Williams Village Programs, like Haunted Halls, Monica has the perfect formula to build community! II. The attendance at each of Monica’s programs are always in the hundreds range! She achieves this through innovative advertising of print and social media. III.Often times, people overlook Williams Village because it is a residential community disconnected from main campus. Throughout this year Monica has been a strong advocate for the Williams Village area through programming and legislation.

“I’ve loved working with Monica the past few months. She's a huge role model to me. Specifically, she’s been an amazing big. She’s supported me not only in my NRHH endeavors, but also outside the organization. I’ve grown as a person and a leader under her leadership. I can’t wait to work with her in the future!”

3 Monica has been a great addition to the Golden Buffalo Chapter executive board because of her commitment to the betterment of NRHH for the future. She has taken steps such as researching about websites to enable the Chapter to have a sustainable and distinct mode of communication with its membership. Additionally, while she has done an outstanding job in her VP role, she’s also been an integral piece to the restructuring of next year’s executive board. At each executive training and executive meeting, Monica has never been afraid to voice her opinions. During key conversations between the executive board Monica ensures that each idea is thoroughly challenged and revised before implementation to make sure that the best is being brought upon the general body members. Her work this year, both within the executive board and her leadership roles, will surely have lasting and positive effects with the organization for years to come.

The NRHH 2015-2016 Exec Board.

at the Big/Little Reveal.

Monica is always eager to share her wealth of knowledge. Her dual role on the boards made her the perfect choice to present about programming during the NRHH spring executive training. She came prepared with a detailed PowerPoint, handouts of her previous schedules and shopping list, and examples of prior advertisements. The other executives valued her presentation greatly! They valued her standardized model of programming which made the process much smoother, and the VP of Service has even included her presentation to his transition report to help his successor as it had helped him.

Monica has gone through great lengths to redefine her role as the VP of OTMs and Technology. In this VP role she is in charge of the technological aspects of the organization. This includes the campus OTM website, the NRHH website, and the NRHH Facebook page. Lastly, Monica is in charge of taking minutes during Executive meetings and general body meetings. OTM management can be a befuddling process, but Monica has figured out how to untangle the proverbial recognition knots through intentional organization strategies. Towards the end of the month she begins contacting her committee to remind them to vote for OTMs that month. Next, while she is not required to, Monica reads through every OTM. She does this each month so that she can follow up with the OTM writer to offer helpful suggestions for improvement. This process occurs in collaboration with the RHA Director of Leadership Development and the NRHH Advisor—they both advise students who are required to write OTMs each month. She emails the feedback to them so that they can connect with the writer for growth and development. Additionally, Monica communicates with the Residence Life Department so that they can send out personalized cards that include quotes to the monthly winners. Lastly, she posts the monthly winners on the Facebook page. As a social media guru, Monica knows how to handle this aspect of her job superbly! This is the reason why she has been challenged to create a separate NRHH website which is currently a tab under the RHA website. The process is still in the works, but her abundant research will surely lead her in the best direction. In the long run, she is helping to develop NRHH through this branding effort.

p Around the time of Thanksgiving, Monica realized that in the season of thanks, some people were being forgotten. She saw the need to recognize the hard work of the Williams Village dining team, janitorial team, and Residence Life team so she put on a program called “Reasons for the Season”. During the program she laid out cards for every single employee that worked in Williams Village. Students were able to recognize the employees, and they were able to do the same for their friends and families at a separate station for general card making. Through a low maintenance program such as this, Monica was able to strengthen her community at a critical recognition point in the year.

“Monica helped me a great deal while I was transitioning into my role. She was extremely knowledgeable, and I’m confident that I’ll have someone to go to if I have any questions or difficulties in my new role. In my time working with Monica, I never felt like was involved with the position to build her resume or for any selfish reasons at all. I truly believe that her sole intention for joining the organization was to improve NRHH. I’ve interacted with many leaders in my life but I believe that Monica's professionalism as well as her personal drive are unique.”

A new initiative this year was to give candy puns to all the OTM writers. The hopes for this new initiative was to motivate the OTMs writers to continue writing OTMs. Although the candy pun program, would not be possible without Monica’s work. In her handy OTM spreadsheet, she keeps track of all the writers and their residence halls. This expedites the process of giving out OTM puns because they can be bulk delivered to each residence hall lobby. Monica was integral in the execution of the traditional OTM recognition program called OTMmy’s. This program aims to recognize all the hard work that writers have put into OTMs as well as the hard work that the nominees have contributed to the community and the school. In preparation for the program, Monica handled the invitation list and the printing of the OTM certificates. During the program, she helped to explain the importance of the regional and NACURH winners. People’s attentions are drawn to easy to read diagrams. Thus, Monica created a new template to announce our monthly campus OTM winners. She was inspired by the IACURH OTM announcement, but created it with the Golden Buffalo touches in mind.

“Having Monica as a mentor was advantageous because she illustrates commitment towards the success of her peers. As always, she acts with enthusiasm, initiative, and professionalism. I owe a large part of my own success to Monica selflessly guiding me through my first year at CU Boulder.”

5 Monica’s commitment to the NRHH core values meant that her original program ideas always included service and recognition. During the fall semester holiday season, she put on a community service program called “Make a Wish with RHA”. Monica set up a brightly lit tent with tables filled with hot chocolate, candy canes, markers, and colorful paper. She and her board members encouraged the residents of Williams Village to write a letter for Macy’s Letters to Santa which benefitted the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Each letter written equaled a dollar donated to make an ill child’s wish come true, but since Monica planned for the program to occur on Believe Day the donations were doubled. In total they raised $500. In great attunement to the needs of her fellow residents and as an incentive to write more letters, Monica provided stress relief items for certain numbers of letters written. The residents were able to get tea, hot chocolate, playdoh, pens, highlighters, and more. This small program executed by Monica was promoted service while also including a small touch of scholastics which NRHH both greatly value.

%

Before the school year began, Monica mentored a group of 7 first year students as they transitioned through their first week on campus. Each Stampede group participated in a service opportunity called Hillanthropy. The group was able to help the city of Boulder with the beautification and clean up efforts of a nearby campus area called ‘The Hill’. Monica led her team through the direct service of Hillanthropy as well as the reflection portion of the service to help them understand the true impact of their actions. Monica’s exceptional mentoring has lead to the largest recruitment of Stampeders to both RHA and NRHH because of her infectious excitement for recognition and service.

Monica is an active participant in NRHH service programs. She was in attendance for Soaring Superheroes, Pumpkins and Project Linus, Holiday Mail for Heroes, the creation of the social justice campaign posters, Relay for Life, Better Boulder, and more. In each activity, Monica stayed engaged during each step of the service triangle— education, direct service, and reflection. She asked insightful questions during the education portion, enthusiastically participated in the service work, and provided thorough insights during the reflection. By attending programs, Monica not only supports the Chapter and her fellow executives, but she also arrives early to each program to help with the set up and stays late to help with the clean up.

Relay for Life

The Stampede Herd

Due to unfortunate timing and previous leadership, the residence life involvement with Relay for Life was a very rushed process. Instead of being worried about the unfortunate timeline, Monica worked diligently with the NRHH VP of Service, in her role as a RHA programmer to make sure that Relay for Life happened. Through innovative ways she was able to wave the participation fees for any residence hall student. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event!

Monica has a deep adoration for the region, which is why she is excited to be the RHA Director of NACURH Communications (DNC) for the 20162017 year! As the DNC In-Training (IT), she has already begun to participate in important conversations about the relationship between NRHH and RHA in regards to conferencing. While her term as a NRHH executive has come to an end, she will continue to be an advocate for NRHH because of the insight and passion that being a leader within the organization has instilled in her.

“Monica is an exemplary student leader. She is especially eligible for this award due to her success with the Haunted Halls program this year. She rocked it! She and her board had record numbers of students attend, due in part, to the exemplary marketing and branding campaign she organized. Moreover, Haunted Halls was also very successful because she was very on top of all the planning she had to do.”

Monica is the RHA Williams Village Programming Director, and as such, she leads a group of 4 students who are passionate about large scale programming. The Board of Activities and Events (BAE) meets weekly to discuss upcoming programs as well as to brainstorm ideas for new programs. Monica showed incredibly flexibility this spring when she had to take over the Central Campus BAE after the Central Campus Director stepped down from her role. She welcomed the prospect of becoming a mentor more students, despite the spring time being the season of transitions.

Monica advocates for Williams Village during each RHA Senate Meeting with fervor. With any legislation in respect to Williams Village, she is surely the first to have her placard raised to ensure that the needs of her fellow residents are being met. She was especially passionate about the legislation changes about water bottle fill up stations (seeing as the ones in Will Vill are sparse), the bus route legislation (seeing as this is Will Vill’s main mode of transportation), and the legislation to switch to programming directors centered on program types rather than locations. Even with all of the legislation changes, where Monica’s voice carried great strength, she still had time to be an advocate to Williams Village in other ways. Concerning her to-do item about original program ideas, for Monica, this meant bringing new programs but also ensuring that the Will Vill residents had ample opportunity to engage in recognition and service.

7 In collaboration with her sister, Monica presented a program at IACURH called “Love Your Self (ie)”. The program was centered around self-love to promote more awareness of self-beauty. It won a Top 12 Program distinction at the conference. This top program has been presented multiple times and at multiple locations because its message is something that has been able to resonate with multiple communities. It was presented by Monica and Rachel at the Stampede Leadership Camp, at the RHA fall retreat, and at CO/WY 2016—and additionally by others at Kittredge West Hall Council, the University of Arizona, and the University of Northern Colorado.

As the VP of OTM and Technology, Monica is not required to write OTMs because she is so closely tied to the voting process. She’s opted to mainly focus on bids as her tool for recognition. Monica’s first experience in bid writing was the nomination of Jessica Zhivotovsky for the RA of the Year Award at IACURH 2015. Although the bid did not win, the experience broadened Monica’s interest in regional activities. Her second experience in bid writing was the nomination of Jesus Ramos for the First year Experience Award at No Frills 2016. The award received regional support and will be in the running for NACURH 2016.

The IACURH No Frills 2016 conference occurred soon after the RHA elections. Therefore, all individuals running for one of the big three positions were encouraged to volunteer to be able to attend boardroom. Since Monica knew that she would be running for the NCC position she participated in this unique opportunity. At the conference she volunteered at registration and boardroom. The experience in boardroom combined with her previous conference and bid writing experience solidified Monica’s desire to become the NCC.

&

&

Monica is on her way to completing all the NACURH links! She believes in the purpose of the program to promote wellrounded student leaders, which is why she is already working on her third link. This year and next year, she hopes to encourage as many people to complete their links.

Spirit Captain

Top Program win

Monica is highly involved in the region. She jumps at the chance to attends conferences, and even before she was elected into a formal regional representative, she was joining committees to gain insight into regional activities and to network with individuals from other institutions. Monica is a member of the IACURH OTM Selection Committee as well as the NRHH Values Taskforce. Furthermore, she is consistently an IACURH spirit captain because she has an uncontainable and an infectious spirit for her region.

To the NACURH Board of Directors:

It is my honor to be ale to recognize Monica Maly’s outstanding membership to the NRHH Golden Buffalo Chapter at the University of Colorado Boulder through her bid for Outstanding NRHH Member of the Year. Through my work with Monica as the advisor of NRHH, I have come to know Monica as an exceedingly hard-working student leader who is committed to serving and supporting Residence Life involvement through her visionary leadership and extremely high task-oriented accomplishments in both NRHH and RHA. Because of these qualities, among other admirable characteristics that contribute to her accomplishments, I feel as though Monica is an excellent candidate for Outstanding NRHH Member of the Year. Within her role as the Vice President of OTMs and Technology in NRHH, Monica has made a significant impact within the realm of her constitutional duties and as a contributing member to the organization. Monica has significantly increased the number and quality of OTM submissions, through increased collaboration with entities on campus who are required to write OTMs (such as the Resident Advisor Recognition Leads and leadership within Hall Council). Through increased education and outreach, not only has submission reached a higher rate, but so has campus, regional, and NACURH OTM winning (some of which she wrote herself). Monica also is intentional in recognizing writers and winners through co-hosting OTMmys, an OTM celebration, with the Vice President of Recognition, and through monthly newsletters sent through Residence Life. The newsletters discusses things such as winners and OTM writing tips. In part, Monica is able to succeed in this role due to her work with the IACURH OTM Committee, as she has regional context that enables her success on a campus level. Monica has also been part of NRHH’s intentional movement to be independent yet still collaborative with RHA through her role of maintaining the NRHH website. Monica was curious if a separate website, rather than a tab on the RHA website would lend towards NRHH being recognized as a distinct entity. As part of this process, Monica did research and sough input from other NRHH Chapters at the 2015 IACURH conference as well as exploring their own websites. Her needs-based approach, both to serve the membership and the Chapter, has led Monica to make a significant impact and meet the needs of the Golden Buffalo Chapter. Monica has also excelled as a highly proficient programmer, both through her work in NRHH and RHA. Programming is an area of expertise for Monica, and one that she has gladly shared with and used to mentor other NRHH executives. This is evident through the quantity of high-caliber programs Monica has implemented during her time with RHA where she oversaw the Williams Village programming, and through Monica’s (nearly) patented “Love Your Selfie” program which ahs been presented regionally several times and ahs been awarded the distinction as a “Top Program”. Monica also represents the values of NRHH in her programing, such as raising $500 for Make a Wish through a letter writing program and mentoring students during Stampede Leadership Camp’s service opportunity, Hillanthropy. Through her skill sets and leadership positions, Monica is able to bring the NRHH values of service and recognition to life on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. Because of these admirable leadership skills and traits and her esteemed passion for service and recognition, I believe that Monica Maly is an ideal candidate for Outstanding NRHH Member of the Year. Beyond meeting the criteria of being a student in good standing, her drive and passion lend toward fostering renewed commitment to service and recognition within our campus community through all aspects of her involvement in Residence Life at the University of Colorado Boulder. Coordinator for Service-Learning, Residence Life Housing and Dining Services, University of Colorado Boulder 154 UCB Boulder, CO 80309 E: Heidi.Vielhaber@colorado.edu T: 303-492-9176 M: 303-815-8714
