Background The Sheila Ryan Chapter of NRHH was founded by Windi Sasaki, our current NRHH advisor in 1996, when she was a student at University of California, San Diego, (UCSD).

UCSD is a quarter system school and is divided up into Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters.

UCSD currently has 10,650 total undergraduates living on-campus and they are divided up into seven different undergraduate residential areas including Eleanor Roosevelt College (ERC), Marshall College, Muir College, Revelle College, Sixth College, Warren College, and The Village. All of the residential areas have residence halls and apartments, except for The Village. The Village consists of all apartments meant for mostly transfer and upper-class undergraduate residents.

Each residential area has their own specific structure, professional staff of Directors and Assistant Directors of Residential Life, and student staff of Resident Advisors (RAs) or House Advisors (HAs). The residential areas also have their own residence hall council and some even have multiple councils. NRHH is an all-campus organizations that embodies student leaders from all of the different residential areas.

Training

Purpose The purpose of the Sheila Ryan Chapter is to recognize outstanding contributions within the UCSD University housing systems and its community, to promote leadership and pride among campus residents, and to enhance the residential atmosphere at UCSD. The Chapter recognizes outstanding contributions within the UCSD University housing systems and its community by quarterly recognition projects, nominating and presenting OTMs, and hosting the annual Rezzies Awards Ceremony. The Chapter promotes leadership through chairing a committee for the Rezzies Planning committees, attending professional development workshops, and attending or presenting at the SURFS leadership series. With these many opportunities provided by our Chapter, the members become role models for recognition and leadership for the rest of the residents on campus to take pride in. The residents become more aware of the outstanding contributions within the UCSD University housing systems and its community through our recognition and appreciate the residential atmosphere at UCSD. The members enhance UCSD residential atmosphere by bringing new ideas for their residential areas through the leadership skills they learned through our Chapter.

The executive board training lasted 4 weeks on campus where all of the executive board members lived together.

This was the first year that the Chapter’s executive board had training before the academic year and it also included joint sessions with ICRA, retreat with a residential staff, Equity- Minded Education training, and all-campus training. During the Equity-Minded Education session, all of the residential life leaders came together and learned about inclusivity and diversity. At the allcampus training, both ICRA and NRHH prepared a presentation. The Chapter discussed the purpose of NRHH, promoted membership, Rezzies, and OTMs. The training sessions usually started from 8AM to 6PM. The majority of the training consisted of learning more about the executive board members positions, preparations for the academic year, and working as a team. The members grew together stronger after the socials put on during the weekends.

The NRHH executive board members continued to strengthen their bonds together after their quarterly executive board socials. The socials served also as appreciation to the executive board members and the socials consisted of mostly going to different food places.

Structure The executive board members are elected by the majority vote of the active NRHH members in the chapter. In order to apply for an executive board member position, the member must have active membership status and have held it for a minimum of 2 quarters. They must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, in good standing with the university, and live on-campus housing throughout the academic year of their term.

The candidates have to fill out a different online application based on the position, give a two minute speech to the members, and answer any follow-up questions. Each executive board share same responsibilities in regards to:

General Body Meetings One of the goals this academic year for the Chapter was to have at least 15 members attend the general body meetings. The year started off with an average of 12 members attending meetings for the first 3 weeks. However, the average number of members jumped up to 20 members ever since then. The members stay active in the Sheila Ryan Chapter through the following:

Announcement & Committees

Do Good

The general body meetings start off with an ice breaker, which is usually stating the member’s names, residential areas, and answering a question. Then, the meeting moves on to announce the Do-Good member of the week.

The Do-Good is a Frog-shaped bag named Patrick and is received by a member who have positively contributed to the Chapter during the past week. The member then keeps Patrick for the week and puts an item inside him. Then, in the next week’s meeting, the member presents to everyone the item that they put in and passes Patrick to the next member. The Do-Good is a tradition in the Sheila Ryan Chapter that promotes internal recognition to our members.

After announcing the Do Good, the meeting continues with the announcements from the Executive Board Members and then committee times. The Chapter consists of two committees throughout the year and they include the Values committee and the Alumni Mixer committee. The Values committee is led by the Values Coordinator, Christy and it plans the quarterly recognition and service projects. The Alumni Mixer committee is led by the Membership Development Coordinator elect, Michael, and it plans a Sheila Ryan Chapter alumni reunion with the current members for the Chapter’s 20th anniversary. In both of the committees, there are about equal number of executive board members and active members participating and planning.

Communication At each of the meetings, descriptive notes are recorded and then sent out through email within twenty-four hours of the meeting to all NRHH members regardless of active membership status. In addition to the link of the meeting notes, emails also include a short list of important announcements to its members. The executive board members also prepare the meetings through a google document for the agenda of the meetings. Sometimes, there are google surveys that the members receive for messages like availability for socials, and member appreciation Pot-luck sign-ups.

Another form of communication utilized by the Sheila Ryan Chapter is done through social media, specifically Facebook. The Chapter has its own Facebook profile which posts updates and is friends with NRHH members (both current and alums), residence life student leaders, as well as residence life professional staff. There is also a Facebook group which is used by the Chapter’s Facebook profile as well as NRHH’s executive board members to post important updates to everyone.

Office Hours The executive board members each hold at least two office hours every week. Office hours are a time for members to come and talk about writing OTMs, learning more about the chapter, providing ideas for upcoming projects and events, and getting to know the executive board better.

During both Fall and Spring Quarter inductions, students who are interested in NRHH can also ask questions and get feedback on their applications from the executive board members. Office hours are also a time for the executive board to work on their NRHH-related projects and talk to their advisor if she is available. Office hour times are mentioned in general body meetings and posted on the chapter’s Facebook page as well as on the office door.

During an exec board member’s office hours, an A-frame is placed outside the office with the executive board member’s name and office hour times to let people know to come and visit.

Inductions The Sheila Ryan Chapter inducts new members only in the Fall and Spring Quarters and there are currently holds 61 members and 47 active members. The Chapter inducts new members by an online application that includes information about the Chapter as well as testimonies by the current and past members. There is also a section on Frequently Asked Questions and contact information about the Chair to answer any questions.

The eligibility for a membership in the Sheila Ryan Chapter are:

 Must be a current UCSD undergraduate student  Must have lived in on-campus housing for a minimum of 2 quarters  Must currently reside in on-campus housing (exceptions cad be made on a case by case basis)  Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5  Must have exhibited outstanding leadership and service to the UCSD Residence Life System  Must have an endorsement by one of the Directors/Assistant Directors of Residence Life, Advisors to any residence hall-related organization, Chair of any residential committee equivalent, or any current NRHH member The application includes the main questions such as: 1. Please list your on-campus involvement at UCSD, including membership in organizations, officer positions held, conferences attended, work experience, etc.

Focus on involvement that relates to NRHH’s mission (residential student leadership) and please include the dates of your involvement with each activity.

2. How has your involvement in the activities mentioned above impacted residents and residential life in a way that goes above and beyond the expectations of the position? This may include describing innovation, impact, responsibility, and/or community building that you have participated in.

3. On the previous pages, you got to read what NRHH does as a Chapter. Please explain how you intend to actively engage other active members in at least one of these activities, and provide an example of something you would like to work on to further the efforts of the Chapter.

The average word count of each of these responses are about 200 words for the members who get inducted into the Chapter.

A group of current members read through the applications and vote on which members to induct to the Chapter. Over the Fall and Spring inductions, the Chapter received 34 applications and has inducted 21 new members in 7 of the 7 residential areas, which was 3 more than from the previous years. The Sheila Ryan Chapter improved overall the representation of all residential areas as an allcampus group. The new members received an informal induction at their first meeting and get formally recognized in front of all the students and staff in residential life at the end of the year Rezzies Award Ceremonies. In their informal induction, the new members received a membership certificate, NRHH pin, Sheila Ryan Chapter’s color changing cup and apple cider, and an information pamphlet on the chapter.

In this information pamphlet, the new members are introduced to the active membership requirements, Chapter initiatives and traditions, OTM voting, and contact information of the executive board members.

The Sheila Ryan Chapter retains member involvement by enforcing the active membership requirements and pinpoints. In order to be an active NRHH member, the members must complete at least five out of nine of the requirements. Earning active membership give the members the ability to vote in meetings, run for executive board member positions, and earn graduation benefits. The senior active members will be invited to attend a senior NRHH dinner sponsored and hosted by the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Housing Dining Hospitality, Mark Cunningham, will be recognized at the Rezzies Award Ceremonies, and will receive NRHH graduation cords

Senior Dinner The senior dinner of Spring of 2015 was planned by a small group of active members of only 3 or 4 and the Advisor. The group met throughout the Spring quarter to discuss ideas and order the senior presents such as the senior sweaters, blow-up animals, and personalized cards for their involvement in the Chapter. The committee also came up with invitations to hand out to the seniors at the Rezzies awards ceremony. Finally, the committee members joined the seniors in their dinner, along with the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Housing Dining Hospitality, and the Advisor, Windi. The planning for the senior dinner of this year has already begun for the graduating class of 2016.

Honorary Members The current student members nominated and voted to induct 11 new honorary members who are not current UCSD students and who have also had a significant and positive impact on residential student leaders on our campus. The honorary members we inducted this year came from variety of different offices such as professional staff from dining halls, markets, community centers, residential security officers, and even students from different schools. Two of the honorary members have served on the regional board and are students from different schools in the PACURH region. The Chapter’s members were very inclusive about the people that they wanted to recognize on both the campus and the regional level.

Activities

Pin Points Pin points are this year’s new incentives for the already active members to get more involved.

The members are given a certain number of pinpoints when they wear their pins or NRHH swag on the 7th of the month to promote OTM writing, go on NRHH dates with another member to get to know each other better or visit the executive board member’s office hours. When they reach a certain amount of points, they will receive prizes including a pen with the Sheila Ryan Chapter logo or a pad folio with the Chapter logo embossed on it.

Building Community The chapter’s members are encouraged to be involved by participating in internal socials. Some socials the Chapter already had were Back to School Art Day, where the members got to bring out their creative side and paint, ice skating, and laser tagging. After some of the socials, the members also have additional opportunities to connect with each other by grabbing food together. There are also study socials that provide members with a designated study area to study together.

These socials, in turn, help to build interpersonal connections between the members of the chapter, as well as a greater network of residential leaders within the community.

The impact of the socials were shown when an active member wanted to create impromptu socials every week for the members to hang out together.

NRHH Dates More intimately, the chapter has developed a tradition known as NRHH Dates, where members are paired with one another every couple weeks based on interests and are able to spend time one on one time with one another. These dates give members the opportunity to learn more about each other as well as each residential community. This tradition has become very popular amongst members, as they look forward to getting to know each other with each round of dates. The goal of the executive board members from the beginning of the year was to have at least 12 pairs go on their NRHH dates each quarter. Through the incentive of pinpoints, the Chapter averaged about 18 pairs per quarter. This year, the Vice Chair, Karmah created a survey that the members fill out to help assign them with members who share similar interests. The survey help start the two members’ conversation when they meet for their date.

There were also some new challenges created for the NRHH Dates to keep them more interesting throughout the year. One of the challenges was to go on the NRHH Date and take a picture greeting one another in any way and the other was to go on a double NRHH date with 3 other people. Many of the members took on these challenges for fun and additional pinpoints! These challenges not only spiked more interest in the NRHH dates, but also created an exciting method to get to know the other members better!

Membership Development The membership development series, which focuses on personalized attention in career preparation, features workshops such as resume critiques and mock interviews. The purpose of this series is to provide membership benefits to the active members for their service in planning and coordinating the different recognition and service projects. The membership development gives the members specialized workshops that focuses on their concerns in their professional development. These workshops contained either survey for the members to fill out beforehand to gauge the experience levels of the members or a one-on-one interaction with a professional staff.

Workshops Resume Workshop In Fall Quarter, a resume workshop was facilitated by an Honorary member of the chapter. The workshop was specifically constructed on resumebuilding skills for student leaders. Before the workshop, the members were given a survey that identified with different levels of knowledge on resumes to personalize the workshop. The results of the survey allowed the Honorary member to plan a workshop that tailored to the member’s resume-building skills and help them at their appropriate levels of knowledge. Thus, the members got an opportunity to learn about improving their resumes instead of learning again on h In Fall Quarter, a resume workshop was facilitated by an Honorary member of the chapter. The workshop was specifically constructed on resume-building skills for student leaders.

Before the workshop, the members were given a survey that identified with different levels of knowledge on resumes to personalize the workshop. The results of the survey allowed the Honorary member to plan a workshop that tailored to the member’s resume-building skills and help them at their appropriate levels of knowledge. Thus, the members got an opportunity to learn about improving their resumes instead of learning again on how to start one. ow to start one.

1:1 Resume Review In the Winter quarter, the members had an opportunity to get a one-onone resume review by a professional staff member in residential life. This resume review built up from the workshop from the previous quarter to check on the members’ revised resumes. The members got individual feedback based on the job that the members wanted to apply in, such as a lab or a new job. The professional staff spent 30 minutes with the members thoroughly, giving them tips on even the details of the format, phrasing, and its content.

Mock Interview For the Spring quarter, the members experienced a mock interview where they sent in a completed resume and a cover letter with a potential job or position they were interested in. The honorary members interview the members based on their resume and cover letter and went over the interview afterwards in an hour. The honorary members gave important feedback on both the answers the body language the members gave during the interview. The Chapter got in communication with 6 different honorary members who were interested in facilitating the mock interview even though most of them were not actively involved with the Chapter. These professional development series not only builds up on each other, but also teaches our members valuable real life experiences to help them in their path after their undergraduate studies as well as interact with the Chapter’s honorary members

Alumni One of the recent efforts of the chapter was to compile a database of all alumni members-- spanning across the chapter’s 20 years in existence. The information collected through this initiative, in turn, is used to give alumni members an opportunity to become involved in the chapter, post-graduation.

This includes the opportunity to submit a profile for an “Alumni Spotlight” section in the chapter’s monthly newsletter, in which they are able to speak of their current profession and their past experiences with NRHH. The alumni can also show interest to be invited to the alumni mixer that is being planned for the end of Spring Quarter. The alumni database project also acts as a stepping stone onto yet another initiative founded this year: an intra-chapter mentorship program amongst both alumni and current members. Although the program is still in its beginning stages, its primary goal is to connect past members of the Sheila Ryan Chapter with active members, based on a personal, academic, and professional level.

One of the first steps to getting the alumni database program under way is to create two separate questionnaires: one for alumni members, the mentors, and one for active members, the mentees. The questions were sent to the alumni members through a google survey and posted on the Sheila Ryan Chapter Alumni Facebook group page. The questions include: Majors and Minors at UCSD Leadership Experiences Hobbies and personal interests Organizations involved in at UCSD Degrees obtained past undergraduate (if any) • Interest in reviewing resumes or mock interviews • Current profession • • • • •

The Chapter already has received numerous responses from alumni members about their interest in both the mentor program and the alumni mixer for the 20th anniversary of the Chapter. There are currently 45 alumni members on the Facebook group and about 22 members showed interest in mentoring current NRHH members. The invitation to the alumni mixers were sent out and the Chapter plans on hosting it on June 4th during the UCSD Alumni Week. This event will consist of both the current NRHH members and the alumni to meet and network with each other.

There will be finger foods and a slideshow highlighting the pictures of NRHH present and past years.

SURFS

Leadership

ICRA provides a leadership series known as Students at UCSD Reaching For Success (SURFS) for almost all of week of the quarter. The purpose of SURFS is to educate and expose residents about numerous topics ranging from learning about diversity with playdoh to learning how to finance and budget.

NRHH members are encouraged to attend these sessions to fulfill an active membership requirement as well as gain new insights. Additionally, NRHH members are able to submit a program proposal and present their own session to students while increasing their leadership experience and going above and beyond with fulfilling an active membership requirement. As great leaders, the Chapter’s members consists of about 65% of the presenters of SURFS and have done 17 out of 26 SURFS series out of the entire year. Some examples of these sessions were about learning personal wellness through yoga, diversity through making bracelets, and how to dress for interviews. The members have the opportunity to lead both by teaching others and also by learning from others and passing on their knowledge to their own residential areas.

Leadership Conference

Even at ICRA’s annual leadership conference, many NRHH members attended and presented 9 out of 12 sessions during the conference. The members presented sessions on learning leadership through video games, campus resources through a game, and dealing with hostile campus environments. One of the presenters were one of our honorary members that presented on practice on allyship. They presented in front of the residents at UCSD as well as delegates from University of California, Riverside, Santa Barbara, Irvine, and California Polytechnic Pomona, Although most of our Chapter’s members cannot attend regional and international conferences such as PACURH and NACURH, they got to present and teach students from different schools. The impact the members have on leadership in students are more than just campus wide.

Recognition Project The chapter provides recognition for groups who have made a positive contribution to the residential communities at UCSD through quarterly recognition projects. The members vote on which groups that help the residents they want to recognize each quarter. Each one of these projects used to have all of the members help plan and participate. But this year, it is planned out by the Values Committee.

Resource Centers Chefs in Dining Halls The Fall Quarter recognition project was to recognize the chefs at the 9 different dining halls on campus.

The members wanted to recognize the hard work the chefs in dining halls put in to provide healthy and nutritious options for the residents. The members signed their cards during one of the meetings and volunteered to deliver the presents to the chefs during their work hours. The chefs were greeted by one of our members with a bright balloon and an envelop with a card, spatula-shaped pin, and gift card to a local restaurant. Not only were the chefs receiving gifts of appreciation, but also they were being recognized in person by a member.

The Winter recognition project focused on recognizing the efforts of professional staff in our campus’ student resource centers. Each staff member was gifted with a small potted plant in a pot customized by the chapter’s members. The plants symbolized the staff members’ efforts in nurturing and providing for underprivileged communities on campus. Each individual gift is personalized for each particular staff member to recognize the specific resource center they are a part of, such as the LGBT center, the Women’s center, and the Black Resource Center The members volunteered to show their appreciation during one of their meetings and interact with the staff members who has contributed in cultivating a safe environment at UCSD.

The recognition project for Spring quarter will honor the efforts and contributions of the professional staff at the Office of Student Conduct. The Office of Student Conduct deals with students who has violated University policy and educate them on the policies and the consequences of breaking those policies. Recently, there were over 300 cases of student misconduct at UCSD for the Spring quarter. There are only 4 professional staff members and the members wanted to thank them for keeping the campus safe through their jobs. Staff members will receive personalized DIY mugs, an assorted tea bag collection and other small stationary as gifts. The staff members are usually negatively viewed by students so the members especially wanted to show them the appreciation that they deserve.

The Rezzies The Sheila Ryan Chapter of NRHH puts on an annual campus-wide celebration of residential life called Rezzies Awards Ceremony at the end of May. The Rezzies is often referred to as the “Oscars of Residence Life” and is a celebration of over 300 hard working people in residential system at the University of California, San Diego. The night is spent giving out awards in each of the OTMs categories as well as awards specific to UCSD like Spotlight Awards, the OTMmy, the Distinguished Service Awards, and the Bronze Pin to recognize those who have been of outstanding service throughout the year.

A Rezzies award functions similarly to an OTM but on a yearly scale. There are several awards and honors given out to the individuals and programs that the voters believe made the biggest impact on residential life based upon the nominations submitted online. The program nominations from throughout the year are transferred over from the OTM system to the Rezzies nominations. The nominations are sent to the professional staff of the corresponding residential areas and the finalists are selected to be voted on by others. This year, the Chapter received 342 nominations in 18 different categories which was much more than the 318 nominations from last year.

Each of UCSD’s residential areas is asked to select a designated number of voters and the Sheila Ryan Chapter of NRHH asks NRHH members from other colleges and universities to vote as well. There are also voters from UCSD that is not affiliated with any residential areas. This year, there were 96 voters and each voter has to complete voter training prior and pass above 85% to vote on their assigned categories. Each voter has about 2 categories to vote on and the votes are totaled and averaged to select the recipients.

About 24 voters were either professional staff or students from 16 different outside schools, closest one being from San Diego State University, to the furthest voter being in New York University. There were 4 PACURH Regional Board of Directors that voted as well as the PACURH Advisor and the SACURH NRHH Advisor.

The Rezzies Planning Committee spends eighteen weeks preparing for the ceremony is comprised of both NRHH members and campus liaisons. The committee is a spectacular opportunity to work with a team of motivated leaders from across UCSD’s campus. The Rezzies Planning Committee is spearheaded the Rezzies Coordinator, Samantha.

One of the Rezzies Coordinator’s responsibilities is to act as a liaison between the planning committee’s three subcommittees during planning meetings. Each subcommittee is led by an NRHH member. The Sheila Ryan Chapter’s Rezzies Chairs are in charge of the Awards, Ceremonies, and Decorations committees, and each committee is responsible for a different aspect of the annual Rezzies Awards Ceremony. Being the Rezzies Coordinator or a Rezzies Chair provides this chapter’s members with the opportunity to lead a group of people dedicated to recognizing the wonderful work done in residence life throughout the year. The committee also helps to forge lasting intercollege bonds between UCSD’s seven residential areas.

In regards to the Rezzies, the Sheila Ryan Chapter of NRHH communicates with it members through the chapter’s Facebook page, emails to both the committee and the Directors and Assistant Directors of Residence Life, announcements in the general body meetings, and conversations during the Rezzies Coordinator’s office hours! The Directors of Residence Life and the Assistant Directors of Residence Life receive emails with updates about the Rezzies and its planning process, and each staff has an RA or an HA assigned to the Rezzies Planning Committee. These RA liaisons share information about the Rezzies with their respective colleges and bring their residential area’s voice to the planning process. Residence councils receive information about the Rezzies through their council chairs or their advisors who attend Residence Council Chair meetings that the Rezzies Coordinator makes announcements at or receive emails about respectively. Residence councils also learn about the Rezzies planning process through their ICRA buddies!

Rezzies 2016!

The Rezzies theme for this year is under the sea and there has been a new initiative to make information graphics on the Facebook event page before the ceremony to get the attendees excited and inform them about where to sit and what the dress code will be. These graphics were useful in making sure that everyone was on the same page and the ceremony to go more smoothly without confusions.

OTMs

The Sheila Ryan Chapter of NRHH is an active community for OTMs every month. Currently ranked number 1 in the NACURH Traveling OTM Award, UCSD makes active efforts in recognizing all the amazing residential life contributions on campus. Since NACURH 2016 and up until April 2016, UCSD has had 53 PACURH-winning OTMs and 14 NACURH-winning OTMs. While UCSD may not submit as many nominations as other campuses, the nominations that are submitted are of high-quality and detail the impact these programs and individuals have had on their communities.

Voting

Every month, submissions are made from each residential community whether it be from the residence life paraprofessional staff, the residence hall associations, or even the staff of housing and dining, the Sheila Ryan Chapter recognizes the hard work of each facets of residence life. Then, all of the currently active members of the Chapter votes on the best nominations. The members of the chapter are trained on how to vote without bias and to select what they believe is the best nomination for recognition and to representing UCSD for sharing with other campuses.

Incentives

The Chapter provides prizes to the recipients and of the OTMs. The prizes vary on whether the OTM has won on the campus, PACURH, or NACURH level as well as the type of OTM. This academic year, the OTMs Coordinator, Josephine, designed more Sheila Ryan Chapter branded prizes, such as the playing cards and Kudos pads. These branded and specific prizes were creative and thoughtful, particularly as it relates to how individuals or groups might interact with their different awards. An example is that The group and program prizes, like the playing cards, promote even more programs and interaction within the groups. The nominators are also incentivized to write OTMs through the OTM Nominator Raffle. At the end of each academic quarter, the chapter places all nominators of the quarter into a raffle and selects two people as recipients of a gift card to the UCSD bookstore. This is simply a small way for our chapter to thank the nominators for recognizing and appreciating the hard work in their residential communities.

Impact

With the OTM system in place at the UCSD campus, the Sheila Ryan Chapter encourages residents to be excellent role models and one of to do so is through recognition. Because UCSD is a large campus that includes seven residential areas, there are many events, individuals, groups, programs, and so much more with the residential communities that often go unnoticed and underappreciated. The chapter relies on and encourages NRHH members from all parts of campus to nominate these contributions. By recognizing these wonderful contributions to residence life, the Sheila Ryan Chapter is presented with a whole catalogue of various programs and residential leaders. In addition, by being members who actively recognize the UCSD residential communities, the chapter hopes to serve as role models to other residential leaders so that they can also appreciate their communities by writing nominations as well. The Chapter has proven its impact by winning 19 Chapter related OTMs that include organizations, advisor, community service, passive programs, and executive board members on both PACURH and NACURH levels this year.

Service Project

The chapter provides worthwhile service to the on-campus and surrounding community by hosting a large-scale service project every quarter.

Each service project targets a specific type of people and focuses on connecting both those on-campus and those off-campus in the immediate San Diego region.

For the Fall Quarter service project, the Sheila Ryan Chapter collaborated with ICRA to put on an event called “May Your Cans Be Ever in the Food Pantry”. This was a two-day event which focused on the screening of all of the Hunger Games movies prior to the release of the most recent film, Mockingjay Part 2. Attendees were automatically entered in a raffle to win prizes, and were able to enjoy concessions such as cotton candy and popcorn in exchange for non perishable food items. These canned food items were then donated to the on campus food pantry for students, the Triton Food Pantry. Upon working with ICRA, the chapter agreed that it would take on the service project component of the two-day event. In doing so, the chapter created educational posters to display at the event which explained the purpose and goals of the Triton Food Pantry. The Triton Food Pantry is an organization that gives food to the students that cannot afford their own food. The Chapter’s members volunteered for shifts when putting on the event. This collaboration with ICRA was considered to be a successful event as the chapter raised awareness for a cause on campus.

Random Acts of Kindness The service project for Winter Quarter was based on the Random Acts of Kindness billboard projects. The purpose was to raise awareness and to encourage positive interactions between students on campus. For this project, we placed 3 white boards in the university’s center and provided sharpie markers for people to anonymously write compliments or words or encouragement for their peers on said billboards. Random Acts of Kindness gave students to physical opportunity to reach out and connect positively with their own community. In doing so, all students who participate serviced those who need kindness or hope in our immediate community.

The chapter believed that service is not just limited to community service. The true purpose of service is develop a community that supports and leans on each other by committing specific actions for others.

Feeding America San Diego The service project for the Spring Quarter will be a volunteer event through a third party organization in the hopes of connecting our members with the greater San Diego area. Since the previous service project focused on the students at UCSD, the members wanted to broaden their fields by helping the local San Diego community. The Chapter wanted to help out San Diego to give back to its own community. The members realized the challenges of obtaining food for many people at UCSD as well as in the greater San Diego area. This quarter, the members will be collaborating with Feeding America San Diego, a local food bank, by helping them pass out resources and food to those who need but cannot afford it.

Challenges This year the structure of the Sheila Ryan Chapter changed it’s positions, job responsibilities, and compensation. The executive board positions were compensated from this academic year on wards, so the positions were changed and more responsibilities were added on. Another challenge with the new structure was electing new executive board members. Since the Sheila Ryan Chapter requires its members to have made positive contributions to their residential communities, most of the members inducted are either RAs or HAs. The RAs and HAs are also compensated through Housing and Dining and have summer training at the same time as the NRHH. Thus, only the members who are not already RAs or HAs can run for positions. Only a small pool of the Chapter's members are inducted for their contributions to their residential communities by their residence council involvement.

In order to overcome the challenge of not having executive board members, the Chapter elected executive board members who were mostly new inducted members from the Spring Quarter of 2015. The only executive member who was not newly inducted was the Chair, Hee Yeon.

The transition was very challenging to the rest of the executive board members because the executive members only had 4 weeks of experience in the Chapter before the summer training. It became more confusing to the new executive board members because since the transition, the positions they saw in the previous executive board were different than the ones they were in now. However, through the 4 week training before the academic year, the executive board members got time to fully understand their duties and the new structure of the Sheila Ryan Chapter. Although the executive board members were not confident in their roles in the beginning of the year, they earned confidence throughout the fall quarter after trial and error.

The next challenge was that the Chapter did not even have a full executive board throughout all of Fall Quarter and the Spring Quarter. The Values Coordinator position was empty until after our fall induction of this academic year. Christy was elected into the Values Coordinator position at the end of Fall Quarter and began her position at the start of the Winter Quarter. Before she was elected, all of the executive board members helped plan the service project for the Fall Quarter. We even had the help of the ICRA executive board members because we collaborated with them. For the fall recognition project, Hee Yeon led the planning but the members helped volunteer to distribute the rest of the recognition gifts.

As for the Spring Quarter, unfortunately the Membership Development Coordinator became ineligible for the position. Thus, at the beginning of the quarter, there were appointments to 2 or 3 members to fulfill the position. Only these small number of people were eligible for the position because of the amount of compensation for the positions as stated before. However, these members already had too many commitments to accept the position. In order to fulfill the Membership Development Coordinator position, the Advisor and the Chair thought it was best to ask the position’s elected member for next year to complete some of the responsibilities to ease the transition. The responsibilities were split between the elected member, Chair, and the Advisor. With the delegation of these tasks, the

Budget The budget for the Sheila Ryan Chapter is given by the Inter-College Residents’ Association (ICRA) and ICRA receives their funding from the activities fees that residents pay for. ICRA gives the Chapter $6,000 for the entire year and most of the funding is spent on the OTM prizes that are personalized through the Chapter’s logo. Other parts of the budget is spent on the recognition and service projects, socials, and appreciation. NRHH also shares many materials with ICRA since they share the same office and are funded by ICRA. The budget for the Rezzies Awards Ceremony is separate from the budget for the Chapter since it receives its funding from the seven different residential life offices, the Director of Housing and Dining, and ICRA. Each residential area contributes $350 and the catering is covered by the Director of Housing and Dining for $5,000. The rest of the funding comes from ICRA which is $3,000. In total the budget is $12,000

PACURH

The Sheila Ryan Chapter had representation at PACURH 2015 in both in and out of the boardrooms. The Chair, Hee Yeon, participated in both the joint and NRHH boardrooms while the Vice Chair, Karmah, was an active participant in the programming sessions. Hee Yeon and Karmah were not the only NRHH members at the conference. The ICRA President, Will, and the NCC liaison, Amber, were also members from the Sheila Ryan Chapter that attended PACURH 2015. Not only were the members attending the programming sessions, Hee Yeon, Karmah, and Will all also presented their own programs.

During No Frills 2016 at California State University, Monterey Bay, the Chapter submitted 3 regional bids in the NRHH Outstanding Chapter of the Year, RA of the Year, and Community of the year. The RA of the Year nominee is a current active NRHH member, Michael Bracamontes, and he also submitted the community of the year bid. The Chapter received 2 awards of the NRHH Outstanding Chapter of the Year and the RA of the Year. In total, Brian and Will submitted 5 new legislations that all passed. Will was also awarded with the silver pin, which is the highest recognition given by the director of the region. Overall, the Chapter’s members were recognized on the region for their outstanding work.

Committees

The Chapter has three members that are actively involved in the regional committees. Karmah was involved in the PACURH Swag task force where she helped create new designs for PACURH merchandise, such as the PACURH mugs. Karmah is currently part of the PACURH NRHH Newsletter task force and helps with creating the first NRHH newsletter in the region. So far, Karmah has created a form for member spotlight and recruited various NRHH members in the region to contribute to the newsletters. Josephine was involved in the RA OTM Category Committee to clarify the description of the OTM and to decide whether or not to create a separate OTM category for the other student staff positions. Tyan is also on the Spirit and Bidding PACURH task force committee and plans the regional spirit for the NACURH 2016 conference. Lastly, Will is on the Regional OTM Committee, where he reads and votes on regional level OTMs.

RBD

Another member of the Sheila Ryan Chapter that is dedicated to the region is Brian Loh, the Coordinating Officer of Southern Relations for PACURH. Brian is an active member in the Chapter and is currently also involved in the Rezzies Planning Committee as the Chair for the Ceremonies Committee. Brian’s strong involvement in the Chapter brings the Sheila Ryan Chapter and PACURH good communications.

The Sheila Ryan Chapter has communicated with the University of California, Riverside (UCR)’s Highlander Chapter through Facebook messages and emails. The Highlander Chapter has asked for resources from the Sheila Ryan Chapter for OTM writing guidelines. The OTM Coordinator Josephine, sent the President of the Highlander Chapter the OTM workshop slide shows.

The Chapter also continued on the good relationship with the Highlander Chapter by exchanging the Highlander NRHH bags for the Sheila Ryan Chapter’s Rezzies color-changing cups during ICRA’s annual Leadership conference. Many different schools came such as California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (CPP), University of California, Santa Barbra (UCSB), and University of California, Irvine (UCI). The Chapter keeps and remains good communication with the other PACURH schools through other efforts such as going to conferences hosted by neighboring schools.

Few of the Chapter members even attended CPP’s annual NRHH Inspire to Aspire conference in April. The 4 delegates got to learn various leadership skills by attending sessions throughout the conference as well as present the sessions. The Char, Hee Yeon, and the OTMs Coordinator, Josephine, presented on how to write effective OTMs, and Will, a NRHH member, taught about how to navigate campus issues such as binge drinking, cultural insensitivity, during times of conflict.

Overall, the Sheila Ryan Chapter got to connect with CPP’s NRHH chapter through presenting sessions and learning different skills through attending their conference.

As with communicating the Chapter’s resources to the region, the NRHH representatives from University of Southern California (USC) and University of Oregon contacted the Chair in regards to the information about different topics such as promoting OTMs, having good relationship with the all campus residence council, and active membership requirements. Through these interactions via email and Facebook messengers, the Chapter built up relationships with different school’s representatives to recruit most of the outside Rezzies voters. These NRHH representatives took the voter training and helped the Chapter have more fair votes from an outside perspective.

Hee Yeon also participates in the regional NRHH chats frequently and communicates with the AD-NRHH, Katie, to get the meeting minutes of the chats if she had missed them. Hee Yeon has also participated in a one-on-one with Katie over the summer and participated in boardroom buddies during PACURH. The chapter is in good communications with the region and UCSD is number one on the Ribbit Points, which is a PACURH incentive to keep the schools in active at the PACURH level!

NACURH

The Chair, Hee Yeon, participated in the boardroom and the members Cynthia and Amber participated in programming sessions at NACURH 2015. Hee Yeon, Cynthia, and the ICRA President, Will, who also is a member in the Chapter presented a program session. Hee Yeon presented a NACURH U programming track received a certificate and a NACURH U pin. The chapter members who were not participating in boardroom got to work on the philanthropy project and helped make dog toys for Project Linus. Although some of the delegations were not inducted into NRHH at the time of the conference, all of them were inducted in by the Fall Quarter inductions for this academic year. Both Hee Yeon and Will are part of the NACURH OTM Committee and vote on the NACURH level OTMs that have won on the regional levels. The Chapter also has communicated with the NSRO by ordering NRHH pins and graduation cords.

Will also wrote a NACURH level NRHH legislation with the NRHH Chair from University of Oregon to allow quarter schools to induct NRHH members after only their 1 academic term living in residence halls as determined by the host institution. This legislation passed and allowed quarter schools to induct members after their first quarter living on campus. Not only does the Sheila Ryan Chapter have an impact on the region, but also on the NACURH level.

For NACURH 2016, 2 of the NRHH executive board members for next year are going to attend, both the Chair and Vice Chair. Last year, only the Chair of NRHH went to NACURH so this year the active involvement in the Chapter motivated our Vice Chair – elect, Sarah, to apply to be in the delegation. The ICRA President –elect, Tyan, is another NRHH member. Also this year, in addition to our NRHH advisor, an honorary NRHH member will join as our second advisor to the conference. Tia is an Assistant Residence Director that advised the Decorations Committee for the Rezzies Awards Ceremony. The Chapter is excited to bring these NRHH members to the NACURH 2016 conference!

Publications The Sheila Ryan Chapter of NRHH has consistently released monthly newsletters every year since 2012. The chapter is currently on their fourth volume of the newsletter. At the end of each month, the Sheila Ryan Chapter releases their monthly newsletter via email to its members, student leaders, and residential life staff. The newsletter’s primary goal is to inform NRHH members as well as all of residence life about the accomplishments, events, happenings, and involvement NRHH does as a chapter. Through the newsletter, our chapter has managed to win Of the Month Awards for the Passive Program Category on the campus level in September and November.

Another method the Chapter has become more visible in membership and OTMs are the bulletin boards that are posted in each residential areas. The bulletin boards were new initiative for this year to make the residents more aware of both NRHH and ICRA in each residential area. So far, there are 5 out of the 7 bulletin boards posted and the NRHH side is filled with information about what NRHH is, the application link, OTM winners, and the executive board member’s office hours. The bulletin boards serve as physical newsletters that get updated every month that even residents can readily see and get involved in NRHH. Additionally, the newsletter and the bulletin boards has served as a successful tool in gaining the interest of residential life staff. This interest has allowed for our chapter to speak to residential life members about Of the Month Awards as well as the induction process. Because of this, there has been an increase in Of the Month Award submissions as well as an increase in membership applications during induction.
