President’s Message Dear Heads, Dean’s and Residential Coordinators, Our Conference is fast approaching and we are incredibly excited to see you and your students once again this year!

Last month our Executive and Working Party team came together in Melbourne at International House to further prepare for our conference program. It’s always an electrifying time when the team is in the same room, generating ideas and pushing their limits. Everyday I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be working alongside such a fine group of individuals. They truly care about your students. They are devoted to the idea that young leaders, given the tools and ideas, can build and improve their own communities.

If you are thinking about joining us this year, please take that last step and purchase a ticket to either our National Conference or our HRC Conference, or both!

There is no other opportunity in Australia for student leaders living on campus to come together to discuss how they might make their communities even better. This is further bolstered by the staff leaders who also attend our HRC Conference and share their vast experience.

Together, we create a space for unparalleled dialogue, idea generation, and enthusiasm for what can be created and improved.

Over the course of a week, students and staff can come across ideas and strategies that can brighten students' lives in both small and large ways.

We are so incredibly proud to play a role in the creation of those moments.

With the National Conference being held at the end of the year, it is particularly geared towards preparing your new leaders for their roles in 2020!

The NAAUC HRC conference is unique as it facilitates dialogue between staff and students, with both groups working collaboratively to consider how best to foster healthy communities.

Thank yoU t o H ay d e n G l a s s CELEBRATING 11 YEARS WITH NAAUC!

For the past 18 years Hayden Glass has been serving young people and his community as the Western Australian Coordinator of Red Frogs. Last year he spoke to 15,000 school leavers about making healthy life choices. The work that Hayden does, along with all the Red Frogs team, safeguards another generation of young people as they enter and navigate young adulthood.

In recognition of his efforts, this month, Hayden was the deserving winner of the Westfield Local Hero Award and received $10,000 to be put towards the great work that he does.

Every year, Hayden, and Boss Frog (Andy Gourley) join us with a team of ‘Froggers’ at our National Conference. The Froggers play an important part in the conversations that are had at the conference, not only in the academic space, but also in the social space during the evening. It is their example, along with the NAAUC team, that show what a healthy social event can look like. Creative, fun, healthy and engaging!

Last month, NAAUC President Jonty Boshier met with Hayden Glass and Alex Wilson (Red Frog coordinator for the 2019 NAAUC Conference) to discuss some of their experiences at NAAUC’s National Conferences.

This year will be Hayden’s 11th NAAUC conference. His first NAAUC conference was in 2008, at Trinity College, University of Western Australia. Hayden says that after his first conference Hayden says he saw how the Red Frogs could do more in the university space.

“I think I caught what you guys were really trying to do for students living on campus. And I guess, each year that I’ve been involved, I’ve seen such a massive shift in how you’ve actually run your conferences,” Hayden says.

“There is such a focus on wellness, student life, community and pastoral care, that the party thing is kind of not even warranted,” he says.

“There is the reputation out there that NAAUC is just a party every night with a little bit of academic material...but actually you are a group of people who have said, “You know what?, is that what we really want to be known for?”.

“NAAUC has been able to make the tough decisions to say, “We’re going to cut the bar tab. You know what, we’re actually not going to do that event.

You know what we’re actually going to keep it in house and do it like this”.

“So you’ve been able to make those shifts, and it’s been amazing to watch that, and see you guys, in the face of criticism, turn that around and actually do it, because at the end of the day, this is our future.”

The NAAUC team and the Red Frogs have worked in collaboration for many years, with both groups aptly focused on supporting and improving residential communities.

“We see it as an opportunity to bring talent from our team, from all round the country to your conference. What that means, is that we’ve been able to learn from each other, about what happens in different states and what they do at different events,” he says.

“We’ve built some life-long friendships and relationships with delegates, and the Executive...and those relationships are priceless.”

“We want to be able to help more people navigate through this season of their life. Especially when they are trying to do it while at University, and living on residence...so we want to just come in there and support these people as much as possible”.

“So NAAUC definitely gives us the opportunity to do that. Because they see Red Frogs and go, oh, we could have them back at our college,” he says.

Alex Wilson, the Red Frog Coordinator of the 2019 NAAUC Conference says that one of the most rewarding parts of the NAAUC conference is seeing the impact of both organisations.

Alex says that a personal highlight was “...seeing everyone so inspired and wanting to work together and wanting to collaborate - and not just between those living on res - but also collaborating with the Red Frogs as well.”

“For example, there were discussions that would happen in the State Rep meetings where we would be sitting at the table speaking with each of the delegates and be able to ask questions and talk about what changes we want to bring back to our states.”

“That the passion that is in that place is just ridiculous – I just haven’t seen anything like it. I just haven’t seen so many people who are actually willing to be the change they want to see!”

The whole team NAAUC team would like to thank Hayden Glass and the RedFrogs for their ongoing support with our association. NAAUC continues to support student leaders in creating strong and healthy communities, where students can truly flourish.
