PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Dear Heads, Deans and Residential Coordinators, I am delighted to be able to welcome you to the 49th Annual NAAUC National Conference, to be held at Mannix College within Monash University. Since our foundation in 1968, NAAUC has always been run on the belief that our greatest opportunities to better ourselves and our communities come from students sharing their experiences and learning from others. By fostering goodwill and understanding between residences, it is hoped that we allow for students and their residences to learn from one another, and take these experiences to put into practical use. Simultaneously, we strive to engage with Heads of College, Deans and Residential Coordinators in this process to provide the richest possible collaborative learning experience. Our National Conference has always been shaped by the challenges being faced by students and residences at the time, and though our industry faces many challenges, we believe this provides an equal number of incredible opportunities to be at the forefront of social and cultural change for the better. We are proud to boast an unparalleled academic and social program which we believe gives students the knowledge and tools to embrace these opportunities, whilst empowering them with the confidence to stride into the next stage of their development as leaders. It is our hope that by including you, the staff of residences, in this process will not only further enrich the experience the students are exposed to, but give you a unique glimpse at raw student passion and ideas from around the country to take back to your own residences. We are confident that our tagline for Conference 2017 “Stand Up, Step Forward� will be on show more than ever before, as we continue to refine our academic and social programs to give students not only the knowledge and confidence, but practical skills to work collaboratively with you to leave a lasting, positive legacy on your communities. CONFERENCE DIRECTORS’ WELCOME To our Heads and Residential Coordinators, The 2017 National Conference is fast approaching and the NAAUC team has been working hard to ensure that we produce an engaging and dynamic program for you all to enjoy. The theme of this year’s conference is “Stand up, Step Forward”. We aim to equip attendees with the tools and skills they need to “stand up” and take on positions of leadership and responsibility, then “step forward” and instigate positive and innovative change in their residential community. At NAAUC we know that Heads and Residential Coordinators are essential in making sure such changes and innovations are sustainable and continue into the future. Therefore, over the previous nine months of planning and development the NAAUC team has endeavored to construct a program that will enable both HRC and delegates to “stand up” and “step forward” together. While there will still be old favorites such as Parliamentary Debating, Conference this year will also encompass a number of new exciting activities for you to enjoy such as our “Night at the Theater” event. Not to mention an excitable academic program and guest speaker series, including the likes of Christen Nixon and Andy Gourley. HOST UNIVERSITY Monash University
Established in 1958, Monash University has grown by embracing a culture of creativity and innovation. The Clayton campus (where the conference will be held) is the central hub of Monash University life, offering high quality education beyond the confines of the city. As an active member of the Group of Eight Universities and with over 60,000 students currently studying across multiple campuses, it has grown to become one of Australia’s largest educational institutions.

HOST RESIDENCE
Mannix College
Situated at Monash University’s Clayton campus, Mannix College accepted its first intake in 1969 and became co-educational in 1974. With a rejuvenated alumni program, as well as recent renovations to include a state-of-the-art academic and spiritual centre, Mannix College is at the forefront of providing quality pastoral, academic and social services to its residents. In 2017, HRC Conference will be hosted by Mannix College within Monash University, Melbourne from the 2nd-5th of July.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM
At NAAUC, we pride ourselves on providing a tangible link between collegiate administration and their student bodies. The Academic Program for our Heads & Residential Coordinators (HRC) Conference aims to explore both cutting edge and perennial issues facing Australian colleges, striving to ensure these communities remain progressive and relevant in the wider context of Australian higher education. In 2017, the structure of our Academic Program has undergone some significant and exciting changes. Under the new structure, delegates can expect to see more refined and revised editions of the best content offered at previous conferences, as well as a number of formats which are new to NAAUC this year. The HRC Program will include some sessions alongside student delegates, some sessions which facilitate discussion between HRC delegates and senior student leaders, as well as discussions between HRC delegates from across the country. The breakdown of this structure will be explained below, but all in all expect the Academic program of the 2017 NAAUC National Conference to be bigger and better than ever!

FOCUS SESSIONS
DISCUSSION GROUPS
Focus Sessions will bring experienced, outside expertise into Conference to engage with the topics that affect residences the most. Small groups of delegates will be able to interact with panels of guests; getting the opportunity to learn about the subject areas, ask specific questions, and build connections outside the NAAUC community.
These sessions will be facilitated by the NAAUC Executive Team. They will generate openended discussion of a number of issues within the Australian collegiate sphere that pertain specifically to College Administrations. Some of these sessions will also involve discussion between HRC and college student leaders to encourage idea sharing and new perspectives.

HRC will have the opportunity to attend two focus sessions of their choice on Monday and Wednesday mornings.
SEMINARS Seminars provide an in-depth look at topics relating to life as a student leader, providing delegates with the knowledge and inspiration they need to be effective operators and agents of change. Presented by members of our NAAUC leadership team, the seminars are well researched and represent our understanding of best practice in their subject areas. Many of our seminars have been running for over five years, and have been tried and tested against thousands of students in residences across Australia. HRC will attend two seminars across the course of their conference. Topics we recommend for HRC include: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

To ensure these discussions are as useful as possible, the final list of topics covered in these discussions will be decided upon as a group at the beginning of the HRC Conference. If you have any topic suggestions you would like to add to our list for consideration, please email them to vp@naauc.edu.au. Monday afternoon discussion group will run slightly differently, being set aside for discussion on promoting a safe residential culture surrounding sex, sexuality and gender, and respectful relationships. Leading these discussions will be an expert from the field (TBA), who will guide the group through the upcoming survey results release from the AHRC on sexual assault on campus and recommendations for universities and residences that will spring from this.
BRIGGS COMMUNICATION SESSION NAAUC is thrilled to welcome Briggs Communication founder and CEO Allan Briggs and NAAUC alumnus James Fitzpatrick to the conference. As a premier service for media crisis management, Briggs Communication is an expert in working with residential communities. These sessions will enable you to work directly with brains behind the business and the chance to work alongside them to discuss the pertinent issues affecting our collegiate community.
SOCIAL PROGRAM
NAAUC’s HRC Conference isn’t merely an opportunity to further academic and professional development, it’s an opportunity to meet fellow staff members from residences across Australia. We strive to facilitate these networking opportunity through exciting social events. The program also provides the opportunity for HRC delegates to interact with student delegates, offering alternative perspectives and promoting a healthy student/staff relationship.

OPENING DINNER To kick off the social program for NAAUC, students and HRC will be attending Opening Dinner on the first night of conference in the Mannix Dining Hall. Over a delicious buffet meal, delegates, heads of residential communities and the NAAUC leadership team will be welcomed to the conference by our esteemed guest speaker, Mr. David Copolov, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Monash University. HRC delegates will also have the opportunity to mingle at a post-dinner drinks function with Mannix College staff, Mr. David Copolov, and NAAUC Executive.
PROGRESSIVE DINNER AT UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE COLLEGES The Progressive Dinner gives the Heads and Residential Coordinators the opportunity to sit down and have a multi-course meal together whilst experiencing the hospitality of residences at the The University of Melbourne and discussing topics surrounding the Australian tertiary residential community system.
A NIGHT AT THE THEATRE (*OPTIONAL) HRC will have the opportunity to join students at their Monday night event “A Night at the Theatre”. Featuring some of the most talented Melbourne comedians, as well as a number of interactive theatre sports for the crowd, the night is a great chance to kick back, mingle with students, and enjoy the hilarity that is sure to ensue! *HRC are welcome and encouraged to attend this event, however not obliged. Please note no event will run concurrently on Monday night for HRC, so you are welcome to take the night off if you wish.
PARLIAMENTARY DEBATING A staple of the NAAUC social calendar, students and HRC alike will take their seats in Victorian Parliament house to engage in a night of debate and banter. Those who dare approach the front bench will take centre stage as they fight for the approval of the crowd as the finer points of residential life are debated. Here’s hoping you get a “here here” rather than a “shame”!

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
NAAUC’s keynote speaker series brings in highly renowned presenters from diverse backgrounds to inspire and challenge delegates on a number of topical issues. Along with the student delegates, you will have the chance to hear from these speakers and engage with them following their talks in a special 1-on-1 Q&A session with the HRC group.
MONDAY: TIM COPE Tim Cope (National Geographic Adventure Honoree 2007, Australian Adventurer of the year 2006) is a 35 year old from Gippsland, Victoria (Australia), pursuing a life of adventure, writing, and film. Tim (pictured right), who speaks fluent Russian, and guides in Siberia and Mongolia, has spent the best part of a decade travelling Russia, Mongolia, and Central Asia by bicycle, row boat, skis, horse, camel and many other means. Most of all Tim enjoys coming to know people in their home environments by traveling in traditional and local ways. Utilizing film and images, Tim tells an engaging story that brings to life his passion for adventure, people, and the road less traveled. He challenges the audience to reflect on powerful issues in life such as pursuing a dream, goal setting, resilience and determination, acting outside one’s comfort zone, developing a sense of integrity, and looking outwards.
TUESDAY: ANDY GOURLEY
From an accountant by day and skateboarding youth worker at night, Andy Gourley (pictured left) saw a need for young people to be safeguarded and in his own words “just did something” to meet that need. Andy Gourley is the founder and director of Red Frogs Australia. Red Frogs are responsible for recruiting 2000 volunteers nationally and internationally each year to provide support and a positive peer presence in large gatherings of young people. The modelling of culture and of behaviour is very much a part of Andy’s personal approach to interacting with young people and Andy readily shares his stories and principles on culture change with audiences nationally and internationally. Andy’s approach is raw and real, he provides realistic strategies on “Becoming the answer you want to see around you.” Andy Gourley will challenge the way you think about young people today and how you can influence their culture.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS CONT. WEDNESDAY: CHRISTINE NIXON Christine Nixon (pictured below) is an Australian former police officer who was the first female chief commissioner of Victoria Police, serving from 2001 to 2009. In her time in the spotlight, Christine has been a huge advocate for Women in Leadership and being a force for change, the LGBTIQ community, Christine speaks about succeeding in a man’s world, leadership, teamwork, resilience, and women in business are some of the themes of Christine Nixon’s public speaking engagements. She has experienced the best and worst of human behaviour. She has been highly praised and highly criticised, but never ignored.
FRIDAY: BENNETT MERRIMAN Bennett Merriman (pictured left) is the co founder of Event Workforce Group. He founded the company with Shannan Gove in their Deakin res room many years ago. The company staffs various sporting, music and other events across Australia and now internationally. University students can work with EWG to gain placement hours and much needed experience in a very busy and fast paced industry. Bennett will join NAAUC as our final speaker headlining our new Friday concept of “The Pitch”. He will provide insight into how to go about taking an idea and turning it into a real and impressive event. Working through the ups and downs of creating a business from scratch will also inspire the budding entrepreneurs in the room.

CONFERENCE LOGISTICS In 2017, HRC Conference will be hosted at Monash University, Melbourne from the 2nd-5th of July.
ARRANGING TRAVEL
For your travel requirements to and from the conference the NAAUC team recommend booking flight into the Melbourne-Tullamarine domestic terminal. If you require special arrangements regarding your travel please contact the NAAUC team as soon as possible. NAAUC is not responsible for your accommodation if you choose to extend your trip either before or after the conference week. The 2017 NAAUC HRC conference fees offer accommodation from Sunday the 2nd July through until midday Wednesday the 5th July.

2018 CONFERENCE BID Every year the NAAUC Conference is made possible by the hard work of the NAAUC Executive, State Representatives and Conference Working Party. But the NAAUC Conference is nothing without a home. Every year during the NAAUC AGM, held at the end of conference week on Saturday, colleges present competing bids to host the following year’s Annual National Conference. But this year, the Conference bidding process is a little different. To ensure that potential hosts can put together their strongest possible bid, in 2017 NAAUC is requesting all bidding residences to complete the application form found on our website. The form includes such questions as: • Can you guarantee approximately 250 beds for a one-week period in the June-July university break in 2018? • Do you have two experienced residents in mind to take on the role of Conference Directors? • Are you prepared to share hosting duties with a fellow residence? • What sets your residence aside from other potential host residences?
When we have received your applications, we will personally review each bid and contact the nominated person to discuss your application. We want to work with you to ensure that you have everything you need for your bid before NAAUC members have the opportunity to vote upon the host venue at the AGM on Saturday 8th July. Nothing compares to the feeling of seeing 200 faces speechless from an inspiring guest speaker, or a room full of delegates having the time of their life at an event, all the while knowing you help make it possible. You are given the opportunity to educate, enlighten and support young leaders around Australia. Ultimately you might only directly empower a few hundred, but the follow on effects of this guidance will impact thousands. Preparation is the key. In past, the winning residences have not be chosen based on their exotic location or exciting social calendar, but demonstrated their exceptional organisational skills by presenting a well laid out, informative and concise presentation. If you’re thinking of bidding your preparation should start now!
