PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Dear Delegates, Thank you so much for your continued interest and enthusiasm for NAAUC! We truly appreciate it, and are incredibly excited to bring you the 49th Annual NAAUC Conference this year at Mannix College, Monash University. Since our humble beginnings way back in 1968, NAAUC has always been run on the belief that our greatest opportunities to better ourselves and our communities come from sharing our experiences and learning from others. By fostering goodwill and understanding between residences, it is hoped that we allow for you to learn from one another, and become leaders in an industry facing many challenges, but equally one with many opportunities to be at the forefront of social and cultural change for the better. Though NAAUC and our National Conference has changed throughout the years, what always remains is passion with which our team tackles each year, to match the enthusiasm the delegates from around the country have for participating and engaging with the program throughout the week. This passion is what drives our desire to improve our residences, and is reflected in the many achievements we see in social, cultural, and personal development that students are responsible for. The opportunity to share your story, learn from others, and gain skills to give your passion a purpose is one we pride ourselves on being able to provide each and every one of our delegates. CONFERENCE DIRECTORS’ WELCOME Hello Delegates! Can you believe we’re nearly ready for this year’s Conference? Time has flown by at NAAUC HQ and we are super excited to unveil the 49th Annual National Conference to you all! Our Conference theme this year is “Stand Up, Step Forward” and we are hoping that, as young leaders in our residential communities, delegates will embrace this idea of taking responsibility and then moving forward with instigating positive change. Whether it be standing up to previous standards or taking a chance to create a new event or program at your residence, we want delegates to know there is always support and guidance available and that no one should be a sheep in their community and simply follow what went before. We have now been working on the Conference for nine months and it’s shaping up to be another jam-packed week. We have just finished catching up with all the NAAUC Executive, Working Party and State Representatives at our April Meeting where we have fast tracked the development of our social and academic programs and we cannot wait to present it to you. The highlight for many Delegates is the Conference’s Social Program. Conference would not be Conference without events like Merch Swap, Parliamentary Debating and our huge Charity Auction raising funds for the Red Frogs, but we are working hard to introduce crazy, new and innovative events to kick start your creative juices and generate new ideas to bring back to your community. Specifically, this year will see four new events added to our schedule in the forms of NAAUCathlon, A Night at the Theatre, ParaNAAUCtal Activity and the hugely anticipated Flight Night. New to the 2017 Conference is “The Pitch,” which involves delegates reviewing the week and their experiences and then spending the afternoon together in their residences to create an event or program ready to take back. Acting on previous feedback, by running this segment, we aspire to help Delegates filter all that they have learnt during the week and turn it into something tangible that they are able to introduce to their residence. HOST UNIVERSITY Monash University
Established in 1958, Monash University has grown by embracing a culture of creativity and innovation. The Clayton campus (where the conference will be held) is the central hub of Monash University life, offering high quality education beyond the confines of the city. As an active member of the Group of Eight Universities and with over 60,000 students currently studying across multiple campuses, it has grown to become one of Australia’s largest educational institutions.

Mannix College
Situated at Monash University’s Clayton campus, Mannix College accepted its first intake in 1969 and became co-educational in 1974. With a rejuvenated alumni program, as well as recent renovations to include a state-of-the-art academic and spiritual centre, Mannix College is at the forefront of providing quality pastoral, academic and social services to its residents. In 2017, Mannix College will host the NAAUC National Conference from the 2nd-9th of July.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM
The academic program of our National Conference is designed help delegates gain the ideas and understanding they need to tackle the challenges and embrace the opportunities of student leadership. We will be running four types of academic presentation this year, Focus Session Panels, Seminars, Workshops and Role Development Seminars.

FOCUS SESSIONS
ROLE DEVELOPMENT SEMINARS
Focus Sessions will bring experienced, outside expertise into Conference to engage with the topics that affect residences the most. Small groups of delegates will be able to interact with panels of guests; getting the opportunity to learn about the subject areas, ask specific questions, and build connections outside the NAAUC community.
Role Development Seminars provide a chance for delegates to learn about and share ideas for the residential leadership positions they occupy or aspire to. Roles will be described in depth and delegates will be taught how to work effectively and achieve within their positions. For those already in senior roles or in their final year on campus, the Current sessions provide a chance to share ideas with others in the same situation.

Unlike the other presentations that are attended at will, all delegates will have the opportunity to attend each of the four focus sessions.
SEMINARS Seminars provide an in-depth look at topics relating to life as a student leader, providing delegates with the knowledge and inspiration they need to be effective operators and agents of change. Presented by members of our NAAUC leadership team, the seminars are well researched and represent our understanding of best practice in their subject areas. Many of our seminars have been running for over five years, and have been tried and tested against thousands of students in residences across Australia. WORKSHOPS Workshops turn the focus to the ideas and skills delegates will be taking back to their residential communities. Through hands on activities and discussion with experienced facilitators, the workshops aim to start an in depth conversation about the subjects at hand. Developing ideas for change is hard, and the workshops prepare delegates to deal with the challenges and difference of opinion leaders face. The topics included are: • • • • • •

DEBRIEF GROUPS Conference has a lot of delegates and it’s important to have a few familiar faces to ask questions and bounce ideas off. Delegates are randomly assigned debrief groups made up of a member of the NAAUC leadership team and about a dozen other delegates from different residences around Australia. Groups will team up to participate in many of our social events. Every night there will be a chance to debrief the day’s events and activities, as well as ask questions about the program and receive any news. Delegates get to know each other and a member of our leadership team, creating friendships and contacts that extend beyond state boundaries and beyond Conference.
INTRODUCING: ‘THE PITCH’! Get ready for NAAUC’s new academic initiative ‘The Pitch’! This exciting new event will allow delegates to come away with a practical change or new idea for their residence. Delegates will be separated into their residences and must use the knowledge they have obtained throughout Conference to develop a new idea or event that could be introduced into their residence. After developing their idea through a structured planning forum, each residence will present their new idea or initiative to NAAUC’s facilitators. Constructive and collaborative feedback will be provided to ensure the new idea is as practical and interesting as possible. This opportunity provides delegates with the opportunity to apply their new knowledge in a conference context, to be better equipped for demonstrating leadership and introducing new ideas within their residences.

SOCIAL PROGRAM
NAAUC’s National Conference isn’t merely an opportunity to further your academic and professional development, it is an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. NAAUC was founded with the intention of fostering strong and lasting relationships between residents from across Australia and our social program continues to work to this end. At the 2017 Conference, we’re creating social events that reinforce the messages emphasised in each of our daily themes. It is an aim of our social program to inspire delegates to take a similar approach and create a holistic approach to overcoming the challenges faced by contemporary residences and create truly inclusive communities.

OPENING DINNER To kick off their incredible week at NAAUC, delegates will be attending Opening Dinner on the first night of conference in the Mannix Dining Hall. Over a delicious buffet meal, Delegates, heads of residential communities and the NAAUC leadership team will be welcomed to the conference by our esteemed guest speaker, David Copolov, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Monash University.

SELECTING DELEGATES
Selecting suitable delegates is of utmost importance for your residence to gain the most from the conference. Not only will the chosen delegates represent your residence at Conference, they will also be responsible for returning a wealth of valuable knowledge and resources that could benefit your residence immensely. It is suggested that a minimum of two delegates represent your residence. The benefit of having more delegates attend the conference is a greater exposure to the academic content as there are multiple academic session occurring simultaneously every day. Furthermore, upon return to their residence, delegates will have more of a support network when initiating new events or changes at their residence. At past conferences, some residences have sent up to 12 delegates. Deciding on how many delegates to send is only the first step, next you’ll need to decide on the type of people you would like to represent your residence.

SELECTION TIPS TYPES OF DELEGATES TO CONSIDER
STUDENT CLUB/COMMITTEE PRESIDENT (OR EQUIVALENT) Presidents are experienced residents and generally have a good awareness of the issues facing both students and the administration. They are also in an excellent position to implement change at the residence standing as a representative for their students whilst also holding a relationship with administration. CURRENT LEADER An active and hardworking member in a leadership position returning to residence next year. For example, this could be a member of the Student Club, a Senior Tutor or Resident Advisor. FUTURE LEADER An outgoing and active first or second year student who is likely to return to residence the following year. Sending a first or second year student is an investment for the future of your residence. The student should be a promising candidate for future leadership positions within the residence. PREVIOUS NAAUC DELEGATE A student who has already attended a NAAUC conference and has been effective at utilising their previous NAAUC experience and knowledge at your residence. These delegates could act as a team leader for your delegates. They can coordinate your team of delegates to get the most out of the conference. They can host team meetings, ensure your delegates attend the most suitable sessions and are reporting their progress at these team meetings. The returning delegate can report back to administration at your residence during the week and coordinate a Conference Report to be submitted to the administration. (Particularly if administration has paid for their attendance!). This delegate may also be utilised to help select the team of delegates that will attend the conference.
The idea of choosing the right number of delegates and the right people is to maximise the return on the investment made. Sending great people is likely to yield great results, so choose wisely! CONFERENCE LOGISTICS In 2017, Conference will be hosted by Mannix College at Monash University, Melbourne from the 2nd-9th of July.
ARRANGING TRAVEL Delegates should fly into the Melbourne-Tullamarine Domestic Terminal. From the Domestic Terminal take the SkyBus to Southern Cross Station. From Southern Cross Station take either the Cranbourne or Pakenham line to Huntingdale Station. From Huntingdale Station Red Frogs will transport Delegates to Mannix College for registration.

Official identification including: • Australian Drivers Licence, • Passport, or • Victorian Proof of Age Card. (Do not expect to be able to use an international driver’s license, or student card)

Registration is a TWO stage process: 1. The individual paying for the ticket must purchase through QPAY, which can be accessed via our ‘National Conference’ page or directly (http://2017nationalconferen.getqpay.com/). Details regarding who is attending will be required. Please note those paying for tickets can purchase multiple tickets during the one transaction. 2. Each individual delegate will be emailed the Delegate Form to provide NAAUC with some of their personal information required for the conference.

CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIPS One of the biggest assets of each National Conference is the diverse knowledge and experiences of our delegates. To ensure we have as many voices as possible engaged in the conversation, NAAUC offers several scholarships to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to attend the conference. Our scholarships are also designed to maximise personal and professional gain from attending the conference. Furthermore, NAAUC views the contribution of delegates as a critical means of staying relevant to the ever changing residential community culture. The following scholarship will be offered in 2017 with the eligibility of applicants, the number and level of bursary to be decided by the executive.
Merit Scholarship To be awarded to a student holding or looking to hold a position of leadership at a tertiary college or hall of residence in Australia. The Merit Scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who shows the greatest propensity to contribute back to NAAUC. The purpose of the Merit Scholarship is to give a student the chance to engage in the study of a trend of phenomenon in Australian university residential communities and distill the findings of this study to a summary that can be utilised by NAAUC and its member residences – to add to NAAUC’s accessible knowledge base. The Merit Scholarship is to the value of the full delegate fee. Equity Scholarship To be awarded to an outstanding tertiary student living at a residential community in Australia for the duration of 2017, who due to financial circumstances, personal hardship or remote/rural location relative to 2017 conference, may find it difficult in fully finance their attendance at the 2017 conference. Qualifying areas include areas outside the CBD of capital, all of Tasmania and Northern Territory. Ideally we would expect the recipient to hold or be looking to hold a position of leadership within their respective residence. New Member Delegate Scholarship To be awarded to a student holding or intending to hold a position of leadership at a tertiary residential community in Australia for the duration of 2017. This scholarship is only available to students whose residence is in its first year of membership in 2017. There are two scholarships available. New Member Residence Scholarship Complimentary membership for a residence that is looking to become involved in the larger NAAUC community. This scholarship is only available to residences that have not been NAAUC members in the past five years. Indigenous Scholarship To be awarded to a student living at a residential community in Australia for the duration of 2017 who identifies as an Indigenous Australian or Torres Strait Islander. NAAUC prefers that the recipient is holding or be looking to hold a position of leadership within their respective residence.

APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS Applicants must submit an electronic word processed application to the NAAUC Secretary at secretary@naauc.edu.au by 5.00pm 11 June 2017.
MERIT SCHOLARSHIP Applicants need to include the following in their application: •
Submit a 1-2 page proposal on the chosen topic of study about residential life which you wish to investigate and report on during the NAAUC conference.
•
Explain your personal suitability for the scholarship; and
•
A reference from your President or Head of Residence/Dean, whichever is most relevant to your current role.
The selection criteria for the scholarship are as follows: •
Personal interest in improving the residential experience nationally.
•
Demonstrated ability to conduct research and effectively communicate findings.
•
Proven commitment to improving the residential community environment through their achievements thus far at their own residence.
The successful applicant will be required to: •
Give a short (10 minute) presentation at the AGM summarizing their findings on the proposed topic of study.
•
Submit a 2000 word report on the topic of study to be included in the post conference kit.
•
Exhibit behaviours during the conference that exemplify NAAUC’s values.
•
Be willing to participate in discussion with Heads of Residences and other administration delegates on the topic of their research.

EQUITY SCHOLARSHIP Applicants need to include the following in their application (to be no more than 1 page): •
Explain your personal suitability for the scholarship.
•
Explain what you want to get out of the conference and what you hope to take back to your residence.
•
A reference from your current President or Head of Hall, whichever is most relevant to your current role.
The selection criteria for the scholarship are as follows: •
Level of hardship faced in terms of financing and attending the conference.
•
Personal interest in improving the residential community experience nationally.
•
Proven commitment to improving the residential community environment, demonstrated through their achievements thus far at their own residence.
The successful applicant will be required to: •
Be willing to share your residential community experiences with the NAAUC Alumni if asked upon by the Executive Committee.
•
Exhibit behaviours during the conference that exemplify NAAUC’s values.
•
Be willing to participate in discussion with Heads of Colleges and other administration delegates in approached by the NAAUC team.
NEW MEMBER DELEGATE SCHOLARSHIP Applicants need to include the following in their application (to be no more than 1 page): •
Explain what you hope to gain from attending the National Conference.
•
Indicate any current issues within your residence and why you want to address them.
•
A reference from your President or Head of Hall, whichever is most relevant to your current role.
The selection criteria for the scholarship are as follows: •
Proven commitment to improving the residential community environment through their achievements thus far at their own residence.
•
Be holding a current leadership position within their respective residence.
The successful applicant will be required to: •
Submit a critique of the National Conference week to the NAAUC Executive Committee.

Explain why your residence wishes to be a NAAUC member.

Indicate any current issues within your residence and why you want to address them.

The selection criteria for the scholarship are as follows: •
Proven commitment to improving the residential experience through the utilisation of NAAUC’s resources.
The successful residence will be required to: •
Explain how the complimentary membership assisted their residence in 2017.
INDIGENOUS SCHOLARSHIP Applicants need to include the following in their application (to be no more than 1 page): •
Explain your personal suitability for the scholarship.

Explain what you want to get out of the conference and what you hope to take back to your residential community.
•
A reference from your current President or Head of Hall, whichever is most relevant to your current role.
The selection criteria for the scholarship are as follows: •
Identifies as an Indigenous Australian.
•
Personal interest in improving the residential community experience nationally
•
Proven commitment to improving the residential community environment through their achievements thus far at their own residence.
The successful applicant will be required to: •
Be willing to share your residential community experiences with the NAAUC Alumni if asked upon by the NAAUC Executive Committee.
•
Exhibit behaviours during the conference that exemplify NAAUC’s values.
•
Be willing to share their reflections on personal experiences with the NAAUC Executive or at the AGM.
•
Be willing to participate in discussion with Heads of Residential Communities and other administrative delegates if approached by the NAAUC team.
•
Recipients of a NAAUC scholarship will not be eligible or any other conference discount of subsidy from NAAUC. Please note that the NAAUC conference scholarships do not cover the cost of personal travel arrangements.

2018 CONFERENCE BID Every year the NAAUC Conference is made possible by the hard work of the NAAUC Executive, State Representatives and Conference Working Party. But the NAAUC Conference is nothing without a home. Every year during the NAAUC AGM, held at the end of conference week on Saturday, residences present competing bids to host the following year’s Annual National Conference. But this year, the Conference bidding process is a little different. To ensure that potential hosts can put together their strongest possible bid, in 2017 NAAUC is requesting all bidding residences to complete the application form found on our website. The form includes such questions as: • Can you guarantee approximately 250 beds for a one-week period in the June-July university break in 2018? • Do you have two experienced residents in mind to take on the role of Conference Directors? • Are you prepared to share hosting duties with a fellow residence? • What sets your residence aside from other potential host residences?
When we have received your applications, we will personally review each bid and contact the nominated person to discuss your application. We want to work with you to ensure that you have everything you need for your bid before NAAUC members have the opportunity to vote upon the host venue at the AGM. Nothing compares to the feeling of seeing 200 faces speechless from an inspiring guest speaker, or a room full of delegates having the time of their life at an event, all the while knowing you help make it possible. You are given the opportunity to educate, enlighten and support young leaders around Australia. Ultimately, you might only directly empower a few hundred, but the follow on effects of this guidance will impact thousands. Preparation is the key. In past, the winning residences have not be chosen based on their exotic location or exciting social calendar, but demonstrated their exceptional organisational skills by presenting a well laid out, informative and concise presentation. If you’re thinking of bidding your preparation should start now!

BIDDING TO DO LIST 1. Find the Conference Directors You may not want to be a Conference Director yourself, instead approach those who you think would represent your residence well. If you want to be a Conference Director find someone who you would like to be Co-Director with you. 2. Rally the troops NAAUC conferences would not function without our awesome Working Party! Think of the people you want to be on your Working Party or people who can help you with preparing the ideas behind the bid. These people do not necessarily have to come from the host residences, but it’s often beneficial to engage nearby residences and their students in the conference. Two minds are better than one but having ten is even better!
3. Brainstorm By now you and your Co-Director-to-be have hopefully put some thought into the content of the conference. This is where extra minds come in handy. Create a file on your computer or phone or carry a notebook and write down any ideas that come to mind. Ideas always come to you in the strangest of places or situations, make sure you type or write them all down to refer to later. Have a brainstorming session about the speaker, sponsors, locations, events, theme and so on that you want at your conference. Who are some famous or successful Alumni from your residence or university? What makes your residence, university or state unique? 4. Approach your residence Some would say this is the first step, however, you need evidence that this is not just a spur of the moment decision. Not only do you have to sell your bid to delegates, but you also need to sell your bid to your residences. The more you show your administration that you are serious, have the support of other residents and committees and have thought of how a NAAUC Conference would work within your residence, the more chance you have of winning their support! Be sure to discuss the accommodation and dining costs, logistics and any other matters you feel would be raised from an administration point of view. If your residence alone is too small to host the conference, you may need to approach a partner residence to host the conference.

5. The next step Either your Head has rejected or agreed to your plan to bid. If at first you don’t succeed, try again! Ask what needs to be improved to have their support. Rework your bid. If you do succeed – fantastic! You must have the support of the residence’s administration bidding for next year’s NAAUC Conference – and get written support if possible. Check with your Head if you can proceed to contact potential guest speakers and sponsors. Your Head will have plenty of contacts, make use of them. 6. Time to put it together Contact potential guest speakers, venues and sponsors. If you can present a bid showing you already have financial support, guest speakers and venues you are firstly going to have one impressive bid and secondly going to save yourself a huge amount of time if your bid is successful! This is also when you should have your theme set in stone. 7. Selling your bid To ensure that you have the strongest bid possible, you will need to convince NAAUC why your bid should win. Unfortunately, if your bid has insufficient preparation, it may not be allowed to proceed to an AGM vote.
