ABOUT THE From its inception, the NAACP has been at the forefront of the struggle to ensure fair employment and positive images in the entertainment industry. In this tradition, the Beverly Hills/ Hollywood Branch of the NAACP was founded in 1962 and heralded as the first branch of the NAACP to deal specifically with the racism experienced by African Americans in the entertainment industry. On October 22, 1962, almost immediately after its establishment, the Beverly Hills/Hollywood Branch of the NAACP hosted a dinner in the Coconut Grove Ballroom of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. The evening was dedicated to honoring Sammy Davis Jr., who had loaned the Branch his Beverly Hills address, making it possible for them to get the Beverly Hills/Hollywood charter. Davis was also feted for his tireless work to obtain fair employment for African-American entertainers in Hollywood, and for his financial support in establishing the Beverly Hills/Hollywood Branch of the NAACP. Five years later, under the leadership of then-Branch President Don Lanclos, a committee of entertainment professionals conceptualized an awards show that would celebrate the achievements of African-American artists and professionals who were largely overlooked by mainstream Hollywood. The show would also honor those people who had worked to change African-American images in Hollywood. Toni Vaz motioned to call the show the Image Awards, and with Maggie Hathaway seconding the motion, the Beverly Hills/Hollywood Branch of the NAACP officially named the award the NAACP Image Awards. On February 4, 1967, 200 guests arrived at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to honor Sidney Poitier and nominees in two categories: Motion Picture and Television.

4 | 53rd NAACP I ma g e Award s

Now spanning 81 categories, the NAACP Image Awards celebrates outstanding achievements of people of color in the arts—television, podcasts, music, literature, and film— and honors individuals and groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors. Special honorary awards such as the Spingarn Medal, the Chairman’s Award, the President’s Award, the Vanguard Award, the Jackie Robinson Sports Award, the Key of Life Award, and the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame recognize exceptional individuals and organizations for distinguished public service. Prior Hall of Fame inductees include groundbreaking filmmakerphotographer Gordon Parks (1984) and trailblazing talk show host, actress and OWN network founder Oprah Winfrey (2005). Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder received the Chairman’s Award in 2015, renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg was honored with the Vanguard Award during the 31st ceremony in 2000, and esteemed actress and activist Kerry Washington was presented with the President’s Award during the 44th Awards ceremony in 2013. At the 36th NAACP Image Awards in 2005, beloved civil rights icon and former NAACP Chairman Julian Bond presented then-Senator Barack Obama with the Chairman’s Award. Media giants continue to beam powerful images throughout the world that shape our beliefs, opinions, and decisions. Social media empowers individuals to amplify Hollywood’s images and messages, and to create and distribute their own images and messages. Given these developments, the need has never been more urgent to spotlight works that foster greater collective empathy and heighten mutual awareness and understanding.

The NAACP’s Roots in Hollywood The organization has been vocal in addressing issues of race and representation in entertainment and media since 1915, when the NAACP launched a nationwide protest against D. W. Griffith’s brazenly racist film Birth of a Nation. Based on the novel The Clansman, the film glorified the Ku Klux Klan and portrayed Blacks as menaces. “The freed man was represented either as an ignorant fool, a vicious rapist, a venal or unscrupulous politician, or a faithful idiot,” civil rights leader W.E.B. DuBois said of Birth of a Nation. Many attributed a resurgence of lynchings and deadly race riots to viewings of the film, which—at the behest of the NAACP—led some cities to ban it. While Birth of a Nation remains one of the most controversial movies ever made (and other offensive works come and go), the voices of filmmakers from Oscar Micheaux to Spike Lee to Gina Prince-Bythewood to Ava DuVernay to Ryan Coogler and beyond continue to rise above with beautiful and varied depictions of people of color. Today’s media landscape offers consumers virtually unlimited content, but the early days of television were marked by limited numbers of channels and programs—some of which drew great concern from the NAACP over derogatory characterizations of African Americans. At its annual convention in July 1951, the NAACP passed a resolution critical of then-new television series Amos ‘N’ Andy and other shows that stressed negative stereotypes. The resolution maintained that such programs “depicted black people in a stereotypical and derogatory manner, and the practice of manufacturers, distributors, retailers, persons, or firms sponsoring or promoting this show, or other shows of this type are condemned.”

IMAGE AWARDS Issues surrounding minority representation in the film industry continued throughout the Civil Rights Movement, with a lack of employment opportunities also being questioned. Despite the monumental events that had taken place in the movements for equal education, voting rights, women’s rights, and employment laws, the entertainment industry would remain curiously intransigent in many ways for decades to come. The NAACP Hollywood Bureau When the television networks unveiled their 1999-2000 fall season lineup of 26 new shows with zero actors of color in starring or leading roles—a key moment in Hollywood history dubbed by some in the media as the great “whiteout” of 1999— the NAACP initiated an ongoing campaign not only to address the lack of minority representation on TV, but also the lack of employment opportunities for all people of color behind the scenes. As a result, in 1999, the networks signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the NAACP and its Coalition partners. The purpose of the Coalition is to advance the cause of diversity in the entertainment industry, and to create milestones by which future progress in Hollywood can be measured— milestones that are still used today. Additionally, this historic agreement focused on implementing initiatives across all areas of the networks’ operations. Members of the Coalition include the NAACP, Asian Pacific American Media Coalition, National Latino Media Coalition and American Indians in Film and Television. Soon after the signing of the MOU, then-President Mfume became convinced it was the right time to create an official NAACP Hollywood entity to better support and pursue a standing diversity initiative.

Established in 2002, the NAACP Hollywood Bureau is charged with holding the entertainment industry accountable for advancing diversity in front of and behind the camera. The office works to expand opportunities not only for African Americans, but also Asian Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and others.

programming for the audiences they serve each and every day.

The Bureau leads the way in the NAACP’s proud tradition of monitoring the media as a form of social advocacy. Aside from managing the NAACP Image Awards, the Bureau consistently meets with movie studios, networks, guilds, labor unions and others in pursuit of more diverse programming and greater employment opportunities for people of color across the entertainment industry.

In an effort for all of America to be educated on the diverse talents and contributions of African Americans in the industry and beyond, Willis Edwards, former president of the Beverly Hills/Hollywood Branch of the NAACP, persuaded thenNBC President Brandon Tartikoff to nationally broadcast the 19th NAACP Image Awards, which was held at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on December 14, 1986.

While progress has been made, there is still much to do. NAACP Image Awards recipient Kerry Washington communicated this sentiment beautifully as she accepted her President’s Award honor onstage at the 45th gala in 2014.

Originally, the Image Awards aired in a late night slot on NBC, but in subsequent years, audiences were able to view the show during primetime on FOX as well as on NBC. Then, from 2014 to 2019, the NAACP collaborated with TV One to air the Image Awards. This multi-layered relationship with the Black-owned network increased the visibility of the NAACP and brought more attention to its key message of promoting and protecting the political, educational, social, and economic equality of all citizens in this country.

“Just as we must ensure that ‘We, the people’ includes all Americans regardless of race, class, gender and sexual orientation,” Washington shared, “we must also work to ensure that the stories we tell, the movies we make, the television we produce, the theatre we stage, the novels we publish are inclusive in all those same ways.” Considering the diverse roots of the NAACP’s founders—a group of White, Jewish, and AfricanAmerican men and women who were inspired to action by the 1908 race riot in President Abraham Lincoln’s hometown of Springfield, Illinois— it is fitting that the NAACP Image Awards continues its work towards greater inclusion for all members of the creative communities, and better quality news and entertainment

The NAACP Image Awards Broadcast The NAACP Image Awards initially broadcasted locally in Los Angeles on KHJ-TV (currently known as KCAL-TV).

For the third consecutive year, the NAACP has partnered with BET Networks to broadcast the Image Awards, which will air live during a two-hour special on Saturday, February 26th, at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 Central. The virtual ceremony will recognize winners in selected categories and honor special award recipients for their activism.

MESSAGE FROM

DERRICK JOHNSON As President and CEO, I am honored to welcome you to this year’s 53rd NAACP Image Awards. As we look towards this year’s show, we stand at a critical moment in our country’s history. Not only are white supremacists groups actively fighting to keep institutional racism the status quo in America, but new threats to voting rights, healthcare, and the very fabric of our democracy emerge every day, all in the midst of a generational pandemic. Yet, as I also look towards the future of people of color in 2022; I see hope, courage, and an opportunity to inspire action. We must make the demands required for the future we want to see. We must also make sure our message is heard through every medium – from the silver screen, to the streets, to the voting booths in November. This year, countless Black visionaries, artists and creatives have made their voices heard, telling stories of empowerment and inspiration that have inspired millions around the world. Our 53rd year is just another reminder of how fortunate I am to serve an organization that has advocated for equal opportunity and Black empowerment for more than 100 years. I want to thank the NAACP members, staff, and organizers, who fight every day to dismantle system racism and build a more inclusive world. We couldn’t have done this work without all of you. Thank you, and we hope you enjoy this year’s SHOW!

Wells Fargo is proud to join with the NAACP in recognizing outstanding performances and positive Black and African American images in film, television, theater, music, and literature. For more than 20 years, Wells Fargo has collaborated with the NAACP to help build stronger communities. Together, we’ve designed programs to enable financial inclusion, providing resources, education, and other tools to meet this objective. In 2021, we joined with the NAACP and other community stakeholders to launch Wells Fargo’s Banking Inclusion Initiative, a 10-year commitment to help more individuals access affordable banking services, whether through Wells Fargo or another financial institution. This broad-based initiative is designed to bring more people into the mainstream banking system, and to increase access to affordable products, digital banking, and financial guidance. As a company, Wells Fargo has a commitment to make the communities where we operate stronger. We are focused on building a sustainable, inclusive future by supporting housing affordability, small business growth, financial health, and a lowcarbon economy. We are doing so both at a very local level in the communities we serve, and by taking on national initiatives. On behalf of Wells Fargo, I want to thank the NAACP for the important work it is doing. ABOUT THE NAACP HOLLYWOOD BUREAU

NAACP Hollywood Bureau

ACHIEVEMENT EXCELLENCE

AND

As we celebrate artistic achievement and excellence in the representation of our culture, we must also acknowledge the improbability of these endeavors. The tenacity required to reach the pinnacle of creative aspiration is worthy of added recognition. Artists must not only possess unique talents, but also overcome daunting adversity, waged by gatekeepers employing subjective bias. Those with the power to determine which stories are told, and by whom, wield tremendous influence in the perceptions that shape public policy and interaction. The images, music, and literature that paint pictures in our minds, also carve beliefs in our hearts. Global connectivity extends media impact to create universal impressions, necessitating a commitment from distributors to produce content reflecting historical accuracy and cultural authenticity.

1 9 | 53rd NAACP I m ag e Award s

The NAACP Image Awards is a spectacular showcase of talent, but also a high-profile forum for advocacy. With each trophy, we acknowledge the genius of our honorees and the incremental contribution they each make toward redefining the obscured legacy of our humanity. Our applause represents a deep appreciation for their sacrifice and a gesture of gratitude for their willingness to personify our pride. Congratulations to tonight’s nominees and winners. We wish you continued success and courage to compel a greater appreciation for our heritage.

NAACP HOLLYWOOD BUREAU

HOLLYWOOD BUREAU 20TH ANNIVERSARY As we begin this twentieth anniversay of the NAACP Hollywood Bureau, we are excited about our vitality and growth. The staff has been bolstered to include an ensemble of credentialed executives, qualified and prepared to maximize our impact on issues surrounding the nexus between entertainment and social justice advocacy. Our offices have also expanded to accommodate a rich slate of bold initiatives and dynamic activities. All of our focus and energy is dedicated to actualizing equitable results on behalf of the artistic community, the merchants that monetize their art, and the global audiences influenced by that commerce. The NAACP Hollywood Bureau was launched in 2001, in response to an obvious dearth of black representation in film and television content. In particular, amazing performances delivered by a small and select few black performers were glaringly omitted from the high profile showcase of industry awards. While the NAACP Image Awards is a necessary expression of intracultural appreciation for excellence in the arts, unbiased recognition of

2 0 | 5 3rd NAACP Im ag e A w ard s

our talents across the humanities is essential to fostering honest comprehension for history, identity, and purpose. The NAACP Hollywood Bureau approaches this mission with a specific emphasis on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. We align with all sectors of the entertainment and media industries to achieve meaningful and proactive measures aimed at addressing marginalized and disenfranchised voices and perspectives. We have partnered with an array of affinity advocates to encourage storytellers and their distributors to reimagine the depiction and memorialization of our realities, by broadening the field of creative and equity participants. We invite the community of imagemakers to engage with our team, utilize the insights we offer, and gain the value of our enhancements to your objectives.

MESSAGE FROM

EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS Here we are, in year two (or is it three) of a global pandemic that should be unifying us as all of humanity is affected by this disease. Instead, we continue to be torn apart by economic inequality as the threads of democracy unravel. Scary times for sure, but we’ve faced them before. What unifies the best of us is a moral compass, the drive to overcome obstacles, and our empathy with others. And that’s what the best of our entertainment has to offer. When we see those values expressed in our movies, television shows and music, we feel inspired to go on. And we need that inspiration more than ever this year. In the spirit of rising to the occasion, we are excited to build on the tour of Black America that we started in last year’s Image Award show. Last year we took you from the Apollo Theater to the Morehouse campus to the Watts Towers. Wait till you see where we go this time! As always, it’s an honor to produce the NAACP Image Awards. ROY WILKINS CIVIL RIGHTS AWARD

TEXAS DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS TEXAS LEGISLATIVE BLACK CAUCUS MEXICAN AMERICAN LEGISLATIVE CAUCUS

The NAACP Roy Wilkins Civil Rights Award is named in honor of a leader who spent more than four decades at the NAACP, including 22 years at the helm of the organization during the early, pivotal years of the modern Civil Rights Movement. Roy Wilkins helped organize the historic 1963 March on Washington; participated in the Selma-to-Montgomery marches in 1965 and the March Against Fear in Mississippi in 1966. This year marks the first time since 1993 that we present the Roy Wilkins Civil Rights Award to a group who will join the ranks of past recipients including United Farm Workers President Cesar Chavez (1989), Representative Ronald V. Dellums (1990), Attorney Conrad J. Lynn (1990), Justice Thurgood Marshall, and Reverend Jesse L. Jackson (1993). This year’s award is presented to those who individually and collectively exemplify the spirit of Roy Wilkins and embrace the NAACP’s work fighting for justice, protecting voting rights and encouraging full participation in the political process.

TEXAS DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS The sixty-five members of the Texas House Democratic Caucus fight for real solutions for all Texans. They are champions for working families, and are dedicated to increasing opportunity for those we represent. They are steadfast in their commitment to increase access to affordable health care, invest in public schools and protect the freedom to vote. Chaired by Rep. Chris Turner (HD 101 - Grand Prairie), the caucus supports Texas House Democrats in all matters related to their policy, communications and district efforts. TEXAS LEGISLATIVE BLACK CAUCUS The Texas Legislative Black Caucus was formed in 1973 and consisted of eight members. Those founding members were: Rep. Senfronia Thompson (Houston), currently the longest-serving woman in the history of the Texas state legislature; Rep. Anthony Hall (Houston); Rep. Mickey Leland (Houston); Rep. Craig Washington (Houston); Rep. Sam Hudson (Dallas); Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (Dallas); Rep. Paul Ragsdale (Dallas); and Rep. G.J.

Sutton (San Antonio). The TxLBC is currently composed of 17 members of the Texas House of Representatives and two Texas state senators. Chaired by Rep. Nicole Collier (HD 95 - Fort Worth), the caucus is committed to addressing the issues African Americans face across Texas. MEXICAN AMERICAN LEGISLATIVE CAUCUS The Mexican American Legislative Caucus was founded in 1973 in the Texas House of Representatives by a small group of lawmakers of Mexican American heritage for the purpose of strengthening their numbers and better representing a united Latino constituency across the state. MALC is the oldest and largest Latino legislative caucus in the United States with 41 members representing millions of Texans. Together, MALC works in matters of consequence to the state's large and growing Latino constituency and to raise the level of Latino engagement in Texas government. The current chair is Rep. Rafael Anchía (HD 103 - Dallas).

MESSAGE FROM

MELONIE PARKER On behalf of Google, I am proud to support the 53rd NAACP Image Awards and the incredible work NAACP has led for over 100 years! It’s an honor to take part in the tradition of recognizing inspiring nominees and award winners who are shaping our world for the better. Congratulations to all! Through this annual celebration of excellence, lifting up diverse voices and honoring artistry, the NAACP delivers insight and connection to the Black community that drives change. This is the kind of change that we know at Google we have a responsibility to co-create. We value our work with the NAACP on many of the Association’s programs, including the NAACP’s ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) program, an initiative that prepares, recognizes and rewards next generation African-American innovators, culture creators, makers, and influencers. With Google.org funding and volunteering support, the NAACP is working to double the program’s reach to almost 70,000 students by 2023. Efforts like these complement our own efforts to build sustainable equity. And just as Google has supported the NAACP, the Association has been an instrumental partner for Google. With the NAACPs’ support, we’ve seen critical progress since we announced our racial equity commitments in 2020. Our commitments included dedicated resources for Black job seekers and business owners, a sustained commitment to racial justice organizations, and creation of the #YouTubeBlack Voices Fund to directly support the vision of Black creators and artists on YouTube. This month, we will launch a series of music playlists in the YouTube Music app, further celebrating voices in Black culture and history. And on Google Arts & Culture, we will showcase new content from across the African diaspora, amplifying projects from the Black legends of Detroit’s rock and roll scene, to international artists from the Haiti Film Institute. We firmly believe the impact of our partnership reaches far beyond the tech industry, and inspires all to embrace what the NAACP Image Awards stand for—celebrating the achievements and contributions of creators, innovators and leaders across communities, while uplifting positive examples within our communities. Google is proud to stand beside the NAACP. Congratulations on celebrating 53 years of multicultural achievements at the NAACP Image Awards—here’s to many more!

ACTIVIST OF THE YEAR AWARD

SCOT X. ESDAILE SPONSORED BY

Born and raised in New Haven, CT, Scot X. Esdaile developed his passion for public service and civil rights at an early age. As a young activist, he worked on several national campaigns for such prominent change agents as Rev. Jesse Jackson, former Virginia Governor Doug Wilder, and former New Haven Mayor John Daniels. In 1992, his passion for

youth empowerment moved him to be the founder of Elm City Nation, an at-risk youth organization aimed at community development and combating gang violence. Mr. Esdaile’s commitment to uplifting youth and community has persisted through his work with the NAACP, where he served as President of the

Greater New Haven NAACP Branch for 7 years prior to his election as State NAACP President in 2004, the youngest State President in the country at the time. Under his leadership, the NAACP expanded its programming on a statewide and regional level, focused on education, health and criminal justice reform.

FASHION SHOW KEVAN HALL Detroit-born Kevan Hall knew by the age of seven that he wanted to be a fashion designer. He embraced haute couture as an interpretive art form, setting out to redefine glamour for a new generation. He stepped into role of Design and Creative Director at the hallowed house of Halston in the Fall of 1998 determined to revive the dormant brand. By Spring of 2000 he had dressed a distinguished coterie that included Celene Dion, Sharon Stone, Charlize Theron and Salma Hayek. He launched his signature Kevan Hall Collection in 2002, a reflection of a fashion philosophy that emphasizes purity of style, incomparable tailoring and sensuously draped silhouettes uncluttered by modern design. The industry felt an immediate impact as the accolades rolled in: 47th Annual Gold Coast Fashion “Designer of the Year” in Chicago 2002; Life and Style magazine “Stylemaker of the Year 2008”. His “drop-dead glamour” on the red carpet dressed Vanessa Williams, Virginia Madsen, Tina Fey, Debra Messing, Sandra Oh, Ms. Ruby Dee for her 2008 Oscar nomination and Gabourey Sidibe for her 2010 Golden Globe nod. Felicity Huffman wore his rouge silk gown with Swarovski crystal accents while winning the 2005 Emmy for “Best Actress in a Comedy Series”. In 2015 Mom’s Allison Janney wore his signature navy off-the-should sequin Jersey gown while winning the Critics’ Choice TV Award for “Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series”. European television shopping channels QVC and HSE24 Italy sell the exclusive Kevan Hall Inspiration collection of dresses and separates. He discusses current trends on and off the red carpet with guest appearances on numerous television shows such as Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane, Today Show with Kathie Lee and Hoda, Inside Edition and E! Fashion Police with Joan Rivers. Guest lectures at the Norman Lear Center at USC, the Costume Council at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Fashion Speak conference in Detroit reveal the inspiration and influences that shape his collection. The Novus Forum international collective trade show he founded to support womenswear and accessory designers has become a fashion destination for global buyers during the New York fashion market. As a founder of Black Design Collective he gathered support for young costume and fashion designers in the form of scholarships, education and business workshops and mentorships.

KIM KIMBLE In Kim Kimble’s world, it’s all about hair … gorgeous, vibrant and enviable hair that allows a woman to embrace her world with confidence and style. Kim believes a woman should never have to sacrifice the well-being of her hair for the versatility and multi-dimensional looks she desires. With Kim’s expertise and passion for both, great hair isan attainable luxury. Having started her journey as a shampoo girl in her mother’s salon at the age of 16, the path was set for Kim to pursue her mission of helping women achieve “hair they can wear” while building a beauty empire. After attending the Vidal Sassoon Academy and Dudley Cosmetology University in North Carolina, Kim opened her first salon in 1995. Since then, she’s become an acclaimed presence in the hair care industry and an in-demand celebrity stylist, specializing in hair for women of multi-cultural ethnicities. The natural exuberance and talent Kim brings to her clients and to her brand can be seen in numerous magazines, including Vanity Fair, Allure and Vogue, along with feature films and television shows. Kim’s work has been showcased in national campaigns such as Pepsi, Neutrogena, Nike, Cover Girl and Beyoncé’s award-winning project “Lemonade.” Her illustrious reputation and unwavering professionalism has propelled her to collaborate with photographers such as Patrick Demarchelier, David LaChapelle and Annie Leibovitz and garner a celebrity clientele which includes Beyoncé, Rihanna, Gabrielle Union, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, and Oprah Winfrey among others. Kim’s eponymous products line is currently being featured on the Home Shopping Network, making her professional hair care products and cutting-edge styling tools available to women around the globe. Kim’s philosophy is simple: Great hair equals confidence & Healthy hair with Essential style can be achieved. 1 52 | 5 3rd NAACP Im ag e A w ard s

EPPERSON Pulling inspiration from the past, touched by his surroundings, people, and everyday life – Epperson is a hard-working realist who allows himself indulgence in the fanciful. His collection concepts range from a homeless and tattered urban princess to the skirted gentleman, secure in himself and his place in the world. This translates into quirky, whimsical, thought-provoking yet functional clothing that allow the owner to “be who they are”. Epperson began his career in fashion by following a “crush” to a design class. His desire to be near a “beautiful girl” led him to his life’s work. That same passion is infused in every princess dress, patchwork skirt, or “rough ruffled” gown. After exploring the retail world in Brooklyn and SoHo, Epperson returned to his Harlem roots. He currently services a private clientele and operates a developing wholesale business. Epperson credits amongst his clients Alicia Keyes, Venus Williams, Erykah Badu, and Patti Labelle. Epperson was featured in the Museum of the City of New York’s’ Black Style NOW exhibit and was highlighted amongst a handful of designers for the fashion anthology American Beauty by Patricia Mears. He has been a longtime collaborator with the Complexions Dance Company and was commissioned to design costumes for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Julliard Dance Ensemble. Most recently, Epperson partnered with the Francesca Harper Project to design costumes for the Limon Dance Company.

ISAIAH HEMMINGWAY Isaiah Hemmingway is revolutionizing the way we define “bleisure” by marrying business wear with leisure. His collections reflect an appreciation of art, style, and bold color. Since moving from Detroit to NYC in 2005, he honed his technical design skills. Isaiah is a sought-after fit consultant for top brands. His keen eye to detail is reflected in the clothes he creates. His footwear line exudes comfort and is combined with expert craftsmanship. Discerning fashion mavens from the East to West coast and worldwide love wearing what can only be described as a work of art. His work has been showcased in GQ, WWD, Robb Report and Casey Kaplan gallery. He also partners with 5-star hotels to cater to their cultured clientele.

CARL JONES Trained at the Otis Parsons Art Institute, and 1992 winner of the WALTER P. CHRYSLER Award for Innovative Design, Jones founded Designers Screen Printing in 1982, providing T-shirt designs to companies such as Guess and Ocean Pacific. Jones sold the company in 1985 and founded Surf Fetish, a trendy beachwear concern. In 1989, he took inspiration from the emerging hip hop culture and started Cross Colours, the first apparel company that took urban style to the masses to the tune of $80 million in three years.

BYRON LARS Byron Lars started designing under his own label in 1991 with a small collection of sportswear focusing on what Lars refers to as “twisted American classics.” Transfixed with elevating pedestrian staples Byron concocted a distorted version of his Grandfather’s fishing jacket that took on “Dior New Look” proportions, resulting in a “Duchess of Windsor meets Field and Stream” hybrid kind of aesthetic. Style “mash-ups” are an integral part of Byron’s design DNA because he sees them as fashion icebreakers. “At the end of the day, my drapey twisty sarong rifts on a men’s button-down shirt are just that…button down shirts. Every woman knows and trusts a button-down shirt and even when she’s fashion-reluctant, she isn’t intimidated to wear a variation of one… even when that variation evokes a REAL FASHION MOMENT”, says Lars. Beyond the above examples, what distinguishes Byron’s clothes from others is their body enhancing fit, meticulous workmanship and obsessive attention to detail. “I want it to be more about the clothes endless about hype.” says Lars. “That’s why there’s even tireless focus given to the inside of the garment, because that’s what touches her skin and mischiefly responsible for the experience she has when wearing the clothes… AFTER that final mirror check to confirm she looks amazing.
