INTERVIEW

LUKAS RUNGGER & STEFAN RIER | NOA* NETWORK OF ARCHITECTURE

“The architectural design borrowed the forms and spirit of the former large farmstead”. Lukas Rungger (1977) and Stefan Rier (1979) are he founders of noa* and run the network behind their studio. After travelling and experiencing many different countries, learning from stars like Matteo Thun, in 2012 they have won the “Europena Hotel Design Award” in London. >OH[ PZ [OL THPU PUÅ\LUJL VU `V\Y JYLH[P]L WYVJLZZ& Lukas Rungger: It’s definitely the so called “genius loci”, which we call the soul of a place. We are constantly searching for essentials, we reveal the dialogue between a location and its relation with nature and culture. We discover stories and continue to write them in our own language. Stefan Rier: We are inspired by stories, narrations, tales, legends and traditions. We don’t just try to understand space, but even more importantly our client: our buildings become a reflection of our client’s soul. ;V ^OH[ L_[LUK KVLZ `V\Y PU[LYUH[PVUHS L_WLYPLUJL PUÅ\LUJL [OL WSHUUPUN WYVJLZZ& Stefan: We have learned that the concept of an “archistar” doesn’t work. This is the reason why we are a collective, we are noa*, and we live noa* day to day. We are a network of many specialists, and not just a single persons trying to cover many operative fields from builder to philosopher. Lukas: We were lucky to get the

chance to learn from the best architects worldwide: from London to New York, Milan to Graz, Ferrara to Brussels. We have learned to act with a lot of courage: internationally we perceived much more willingness to take risks within projects. For example the highly intense and extremely detailled planning process within the studio of Matteo Thun has thaught us many lessons. In addition we conceived many projects miles away from where the studio was located, and learned to handle extremely challenging clients.

What are the challenges regarding a OV[LS ^P[O Z\JO H Z[YVUN WYVÄSL SPRL [OL Ulrichshof? Lukas: The temptation to produce and create stories that are authentic and sustainable for kids and parents together. We felt the absolute need to design processes that are very simple but at the same time they are safe, comfortable and caring. Stefan: The main challenge was to combine a playful world for children that relates to a very elegant world for their parents. We were very careful not

deliver typical aestehtics of fun parks, but focussed on authentic story telling.

>OH[ HYL [OL HK]HU[HNLZ VM `V\Y UL[^VYR ^P[O THU` JYLH[P]LZ& Stefan: We are creatives that operate collectively within diverse fields, we allow many points of view from the “outside” to improve our own vision of future buildings and projects. Lukas: Every single creative mind within our network aims to be a “true professional”. This results in unexpected synergies, and new views of innovative processes. They span from designing buildings, furniture and lighting objects.
