Caring for a loved one is both rewarding and demanding. Yet one of the most common anxieties carers face is simple: “What happens to the person I care for if something happens to me?”
This is where the Warrington Carers Hub Emergency Card and a well-prepared contingency plan become invaluable tools for carers across the borough. The Carers Emergency Card is designed to provide immediate, practical support if a carer becomes unexpectedly unable to fulfil their caring role, for example, due to an accident, sudden illness, or another emergency. The card links directly to your contingency plan or registered details, allowing professionals to contact the right services or individuals without delay. This reduces the risk of the cared for person being left without essential support. Having a Warrington Carers Hub Emergency Card and a contingency plan is not simply advisable, it is essential. For more information visit: Warrington Carers’ Hub - N-Compass telephone 0300 303 0623 or email enquiries@warringtoncareshub.org.uk

A Young Carers Practitioner is someone who helps children and young people who look after someone at home. This might be a parent, brother, sister, or another family member who needs extra support because they are unwell, have a disability, or struggle with their mental health.
Their job is to make sure young carers don’t have to cope with everything on their own. They take time to get to know each young carer, listen to what life is like for them, and find out what help they might need. This could be support with school, someone to talk to, or chances to have fun and take a break.
Young Carers Practitioners also run groups, activities, and days out, giving young carers the chance to relax, make friends, and try new things. They’re always there to offer a friendly chat, celebrate achievements, and help young carers feel confident and proud of what they do.
They work with schools and other adults too, making sure everyone understands how to support young carers in the best possible way.
Most importantly, a Young Carers Practitioner is someone young carers can trust, someone who listens, understands, and helps them enjoy being a child while still caring for the people they love.
y Help carers and families think about what would make a difference to their lives.
y Provide peer support with other young carers.
y Help young carers have a voice.
y Access support in school and college.
y Help young carers to take a break from their caring role.

HMRC (HMRC stands for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs –they are part of the UK government that looks after money for the country) is reminding young people to check if they have money waiting for them in a Child Trust Fund. There are lots of accounts that haven’t been claimed yet, and many have over £2,000 saved in them! A Child Trust Fund is a special savings account that the government set up for every child born in the UK between 1st September 2002 and 2nd January 2011. Parents didn’t have to open it themselves—one was created automatically. Even though the scheme has now ended and been replaced by Junior ISAs, the money in a Child Trust Fund still belongs to the young person.
Some people don’t realise they have one because:
y their parents lost the paperwork
y they forgot about it
y they turned 18 and didn’t know money was waiting for them

If you’re 16 or older, you can use the government’s free “Find a Child Trust Fund” tool to see if you have an account. Parents or guardians can also search for children under 18.
For more information visit www.gov.uk/child-trust-funds/find-a-child-trust-fund
Once you find the account, you can see how much money is saved and decide what to do with it. You can:
y take the money
y move it into an ISA
y or, if you’re under 18, transfer it into a Junior ISA

A Junior ISA is a special type of savings account for children. It’s a safe place for grown ups to save money for you until you turn 18. Here’s how it works in simple terms:
y grown ups can put money in to save for your future
y you can’t spend the money yet – it gets kept safe until you are 18
y when you turn 18, the money becomes yours to use

y it’s a good way to save for things like driving lessons, college or something special you want in the future
A Junior ISA is like a money treasure chest that unlocks when you become an adult!
If you need to speak with one of our Young Carers Practitioners about this, do reach out to them on 0300 303 0623 or email them at enquiries@warringtoncarershub.org.uk
Chocolate is one of the world’s favourite treats, but it hasn’t always been the sweet snack we know today!
Chocolate comes from a tree called the cacao tree, which grows in warm, tropical places. Inside the tree’s big pods are cacao beans, the beginning of chocolate! Thousands of years ago, people called the Maya and the Aztecs, who lived in Central America, were the first to use these beans. But they didn’t eat chocolate bars! Instead, they made a bitter, frothy drink from the beans. They believed this drink was special and even magical.

For the Maya and Aztecs, chocolate was so important that only kings, leaders and warriors got to drink it. They sometimes mixed it with spices like chilli, so it tasted very different from the chocolate we have today!
In the 1500s, explorers brought cacao beans to Europe, where people added sugar and milk to make the drink sweeter. Soon, chocolate became very popular with kings and queens across Europe.

In the 1800s, people in factories learned how to turn the cacao beans into solid chocolate bars. This was the beginning of the chocolate we eat today! Companies invented milk chocolate, dark chocolate and all sorts of flavours.
Now chocolate is enjoyed all around the world in many different forms—bars, hot chocolate, cakes, eggs, and more. But it all started with a small bean growing on a tree in the rainforest!

Easter eggs are a fun and colourful part of spring that many children look forward to every year! But where did the idea come from?

Long ago, people used eggs to celebrate spring because eggs stand for new life. Spring is the season when flowers bloom, baby animals are born, and the world starts to feel bright and new again. Eggs were a perfect symbol for this!

In the 1500s, explorers brought cacao beans to Europe, where people added sugar and milk to make the drink sweeter. Soon, chocolate became very popular with kings and queens across Europe.

A few hundred years ago, chocolate makers started making chocolate Easter eggs. At first they were very hard and not very sweet. But as time went on, chocolate eggs became smoother, sweeter and much more delicious, just like the ones we enjoy today!
Today, many children take part in Easter egg hunts, searching for hidden eggs in gardens, parks or even inside the house. Some eggs are chocolate, and some are colourful plastic eggs with little surprises inside.

Now Easter eggs come in all shapes and sizes—tiny ones, giant ones, chocolate ones, and even ones filled with toys. No matter what they look like, Easter eggs are all about fun, family, and celebrating the joy of spring.
Chocolate can make you feel happy
Chocolate can give your brain a little boost, helping you feel cheerful. It’s a yummy treat that lots of people enjoy!
Dark chocolate has some good stuff inside
Dark chocolate (the slightly bitter kind) has things called antioxidants, which can help keep your body healthy.
But Remember… Don’t Eat Too Much!
Too much chocolate can make your stomach hurt

Chocolate gives you energy
Because chocolate has sugar, it can give you a quick burst of energy, great for a busy day!

Eating lots of chocolate in one go can make you feel sick or give you a stomach ache.
Chocolate has lots of sugar
Sugar tastes great, but too much isn’t good for your teeth . It can cause tooth decay if you don’t brush well.
Chocolate is a “sometimes treat”
Chocolate is meant to be enjoyed once in a while, not all the time. It’s special because it’s not an everyday snack.

Bake cookies, decorate cupcakes, or help prepare a festive treat. Both fun and delicious.
Balance is Best
A little chocolate + healthy foods + plenty of water = a happy, healthy you!
What do antioxidants do in the body?

You can find antioxidants in foods such blueberries, strawberries carrots, spinich, broccoli, nuts and dark chocolate (in small amounts). Antioxidants help:
• Protect Your Cells - Inside your body are tiny things called cells that help you grow, heal and stay healthy.
• Keep You Healthy - By protecting your cells, antioxidants can help your body fight off illnesses, stay strong and heal more easily.
• Your Brain - Some antioxidants support your brain, helping you stay focused, learn and think clearly.
• Your Body Work Better - When antioxidants stop free radicals from causing too much damage, your body can work the way it’s supposed to.

Moving your body helps you feel stronger and gives you more energy. You don’t have to do a long workout, little things count! You can dance to your favourite song, do some stretches, walk to the shop, or go outdoors. Exercise helps your brain release “feel good” chemicals that make you feel happier and less stressed.

Sleep is important because it helps your body grow and helps your brain rest. When you’re tired, everything feels harder. Try to make your room cosy at night, avoid screens before bed, and keep a bedtime routine like reading or listening to calm music. Good sleep helps you feel ready for the day ahead.
Your body needs water to work properly, just like a plant needs water to stay alive! Drinking water helps you concentrate, gives you energy and stops headaches. Try to sip water throughout the day or carry a small bottle with you.

Food is fuel for your body and brain. Healthy snacks like fruit, yoghurt, wholegrain crackers or sandwiches help you stay strong and focused. Eating regularly helps you feel better, especially on busy days when you’re helping someone at home.
Everyone needs breaks, even superheroes! A short break helps your mind stay calm and stops you from feeling overwhelmed. You could take deep breaths, stretch your arms, sit quietly, or step outside for fresh air. Just a few minutes can make a big difference.

6. Do things that make you smile
Doing something fun helps your brain relax and feel happier. You might enjoy drawing, reading, playing with a pet, watching something funny, or listening to music. Having “you time” is important and helps balance the responsibilities you carry.

7. Talk to someone you trust
Talking about your feelings can make you feel lighter and less alone. You might talk to a friend, teacher, support worker or family member. It’s okay to say when you’re sad, tired or worried; sharing helps people understand how to support you.
8. Ask for help when you need it
You don’t have to cope with everything on your own. Sometimes tasks feel too big or too hard, and it’s okay to ask for help. Asking doesn’t mean you’ve failed – it means you’re being smart and taking care of yourself.

9. Spend time with friends or people you enjoy
Friends can make you laugh, help you relax and remind you that you’re not alone. Spending time with people you like, even for a short chat or a game, keeps you feeling connected and happy. Friends help your emotional wellbeing stay strong.
10. Be kind to yourself
You do so much, and sometimes things might feel tough. Remember to treat yourself with kindness, just like you would treat a friend. When things go wrong, remind yourself that nobody is perfect. Celebrate your achievements, big and small, and give yourself credit for the amazing role you play at home.

Everyone feels worried, stressed or overwhelmed sometimes, even adults! When you’re a young carer, you may have a lot to think about, and that can make your feelings feel even bigger. This article is here to help you understand those feelings and give you simple ways to feel calmer and happier

Stress can show up in lots of different ways. You might feel:
• a tight or wiggly feeling in your tummy
• like your thoughts are going too fast
• extra tired or worn out
• grumpy or annoyed more easily
• like you want to cry
• unable to concentrate on things
Stress can show up in lots of different ways. You might feel:
• a trusted adult
• a teacher or school counsellor
• a Young Carers Practitioner
• a friend or sibling
• someone from the young carers group
These feelings are normal. They don’t mean anything is wrong with you, it just means you’ve been trying really hard for a long time. Talking to someone doesn’t make you a burden, it shows you’re strong and brave enough to ask for support.
Quick

Breathe in like you’re smelling a flower… Breathe out like you’re blowing out a candle.
Fresh air and a change of scenery can help clear your mind
Write or draw your feelings
Putting your thoughts on paper helps your brain feel less crowded.
Reach your hands up, wiggle your fingers, roll your shoulders. This helps your body relax.
Listen to something calming
Music, nature sounds or a favourite song can help you feel safer and more settled.
Hug something soft
A pillow, blanket or plush toy can help your body feel comforted.
Being a young carer can be tough, but it also means you are kind, strong and caring. Remember - you deserve breaks, you deserve support and you deserve to feel happy. Big feelings don’t last forever, and you’re never alone. Reaching out for help is one of the bravest things you can do.
