Wokingham woman becomes first female behind the wheel of gritter

A

woman from Wokingham has just achieved her HGV licence to become the area’s first female road gritter.

Becky Barnes, aged 24, grew up in Charvil, going to Sonning C of E and Piggott School and sixth form before moving to Earley with her boyfriend.

She said: “I always wanted to do my HGV licence as I thought it was so different. I did enjoy doing it even though it was quite tough at some stages, but I managed to keep going.

“Within the highway industry, operations is largely male dominated, which drives me (pun intended) to challenge the status quo and make it more accepting. I want women to be inspired that they are capable of this type of role.”

Becky added that she enjoys challenging herself. “It’s what gets me out of bed every day! My family are super proud of me and tell me that daily. They have been very supportive of all that I

do. And in my current line of work, I am out in the network and wear hi-vis so I have the public commenting and they applaud me for doing so.

“Honestly, it doesn’t feel any different to driving a car, you are just higher up.

Becky started work in the industry at the age of 18 but before that she worked part-time at Wyevale Garden Centre and was a swimming instructor at Swim Kidz while she was still at school.

But today, she admits to getting excited when the temperature drops, and she knows she is going to be behind the wheel of her gritter.

Post Office scandal comes close to home

racknell and Wokingham have been in the news in recent weeks after the Post Office scandal was laid bare in a televised ITV serial Mr Bates V The Post Office.

The programme featured Pam Stubbs who ran the Barkham Post Office, played by Lesley Nicol. Pam was one of more than 700 branch managers wrongly accused between 1999 and 2015.

It told of the harrowing tale of Post Office submasters wrongly accused of theft and fraud when in fact the discrepancies were due to its own computing system called Horizon. This was developed by Fujitsu who has its UK base in Lovelace Road in Bracknell.

Now one man has called for the company to take full responsibility after setting up a petition. Grant Johnson set up the petition on change.org and within a week he already had over 93,000 signatures with the next goal set at 150,000.

The petition reads: “The Horizon computer system, developed by Fujitsu, has caused significant harm to numerous Post Office employees. This faulty system led to false accusations of fraud against many innocent workers, causing untold stress and financial hardship. Furthermore, the government has spent a substantial amount on this contract with the Post Office that ultimately proved detrimental.

“The Horizon scandal is one of the most significant miscarriages of jus-

tice in UK history. Between 2000 and 2014, over 900 subpostmasters were prosecuted based on information from this flawed software (source: House of Commons Library). Many lives were ruined as they were wrongly accused of theft or false accounting due to discrepancies created by software errors.

“This petition calls for Fujitsu to take full responsibility for their role in this scandal. They must compensate all affected Post Office employees for their suffering and financial losses. In addition, they should reimburse the government for all funds spent on this failed contract.

“It’s time for justice to be served sign this petition now to demand accountability from Fujitsu.”

Comments from people when sign-

ing included: ‘It’s an outrage Fujitsu need to pay up and be awarded no more government contracts’ and ‘the treatment of these sub-postmasters was appalling. Fujitsu are culpable and must not be allowed to get away from their full responsibility of their flawed software’.

In late 2019, the Post Office agreed to settle claims made by 555 sub-postmasters. However, many of the victims found the amount paid in compensation was outweighed by legal fees.

The scandal saw some post masters go to prison or declared bankrupt, marriages were ruined, and some died before their names could be cleared. Still, many postmasters are yet to receive compensation or have their convictions quashed.

The Post Office Horizon scandal is a miscarriage of justice

T

he Post Office Horizon scandal is an appalling miscarriage of justice, one of the biggest in British history.

From the year 2000, hundreds of sub postmasters across the country were wrongly convicted because of faults in the Horizon IT system. It was covered up for years by senior executives of the Post Office which included not telling the truth to the victims, to the courts, and to ministers from all three of the main political parties. This was an unacceptable conspiracy on a grand scale.

In 2019 the truth came out, thanks to the battles of some postmasters and crucial evidence from a whistleblower.

An independent, statutory inquiry

into the scandal is underway, and the Metropolitan Police are now investigating potential criminality at the Post Office. There must be questions as to why it’s taking so long to pay compensation payments and clear the names of the sub postmasters who have been wrongly prosecuted. For five years very little has happened until the ITV series was aired at Christmas. This is also a scandal and failure of government.

The very serious question that needs to be answered now is what have the ministers responsible for postal services been doing for the last five years since we have known the truth. And why haven't they tried to speed up the process to clear the names of these wrongly convicted sub postmasters

who have suffered this appalling miscarriage of justice?

Conservatives Ministers Paul Scully, Jane Hunt and Dean Russell should answer this question: "What have they been doing for the last five years?" I haven’t included the current postal services minister because he appears to be trying to move things along quickly.

Why didn’t these recent ministers meet with the wrongly convicted sub postmasters? I understand the only ministers who did meet with them have been Lib Dems Sir Ed Davey and Norman Lamb who were ministers from 2010-12.

Parliament must now put in place legislation so this kind miscarriage of justice can’t happen again.

A

landlord in Finchampstead is dreading the forthcoming redevelopment of California Crossroads which he says has ‘the potential to be catastrophic’ for his business.

The work, which Wokingham Borough Council believes will improve the junction, is due to start on February 12th and they say will bring a sense of community to the centre of the village. The improvements, which were funded by developers and chosen following public consultation, prioritise pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorists, as well as improve the look of the area.

But Paul Brotherton, landlord of The Queen’s Oak, a destination pub in Church Lane, Finchampstead, believes that road closures will leave him with no customers for up to nine months.

Paul and a representative of Brakspear Brewery had a meeting with developers and the council some four weeks ago to discuss options, but they have heard nothing since then.

Paul said: “We have experience of previous road closures just before Covid for six or seven months while work was carried out on Nine Mile Ride. I was losing thousands of pounds a month, topping things up from my personal money. If that happens again, I wouldn’t be able to sustain it.”

He added that having spoken to a number of his regulars and locals in the community, nobody wants or actually needs the work done.

In the spirit of unity that carried us through challenging times like we had during the pandemic, we’re counting on each and every one of you to help keep The Queen’s Oak at the heart of our community, and together ensure its resilience during these changes.”

Paul has been at the pub for five years, turning around its fortunes to make it a successful, food-led destination pub. But he fears that if another pub is forced to close, it will stay closed.

“There are a handful of houses around us but limited footfall. Good quality food is our core business and people travel to us because of our reputation or from recommendations.”

And he added that although he may be able to claim compensation afterwards, that could be too little too late.

“I could potentially claim something afterwards, but I would have to prove my earnings showing the last four- or five-years’ takings. With two of those years including Covid and also previous road closures, that just won’t satisfy the need.”

Huge Carp caught at Dinton Pastures

N

earing UK record: Weighing just over 3lbs shy of the British record (68lb 1oz), this colossal fish, introduced to Dinton's fishing lake in 1991, currently holds the title as the largest of its species in the UK. Impressively, it has exhibited a growth rate of four to five pounds annually over the past six years. A spokesperson expressed optimism, stating, "The fish has been released back into the lake, and we anticipate it could potentially set a new record later this year."

Breathe new life into items There are two repair cafés held in Spencers Wood every month, where you can have your broken items fixed for free. The next one is on Sunday 21st January, from 10am to 1pm at Lambs Lane Primary School. Both sessions are run by groups of friendly volunteers, who take pride in restoring items to their former glory.

The purpose of the cafés is to reduce household items going to landfill when they can be refurbished. Although there is no charge, donations are always gratefully received, and you don’t need to book.

Virtual presentation on the dressmakers of Auschwitz

Historian Lucy Adlington from The History Wardrobe is giving a virtual talk to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. At the height of the Holocaust, 25 young Jewish inmates of Auschwitz-Birkenau were selected to create beautiful fashions for elite Nazi women in a dedicated salon established by the camp commandant’s wife. Lucy Adlington has researched their lives and fates to write a powerful chronicle ‘The Dressmakers of Auschwitz’, which is now a New York Times bestseller. New Year message

H

The government has not been very helpful, to put it mildly. Inflation and growth in demand for services, especially in complex and expensive cases in chidren’s and adult social care, will cost the council about £24 million in 2024-5. The government has given us a paltry £0.67 million of to meet these service pressures. We have been allowed another £1 million from local business rates (the government keeps the vast majority). The rest - well over £20 million - we have to find from our own resources.

Nor has the government done us any favours in its changes to the planning system. We are the process of completing our new local plan, which will come into effect in 2026. The government had proposed last year to allow the building of more housing than required in one local plan period to be taken into account in the number of new dwellings to be approved in the next local plan period. Allowance for past ‘over-delivery’, as it’s known, is relevant to Wokingham, as nearly 2,000 more new homes have been

provided in the current plan period than that plan required.

But the government told us just before Christmas that it was not going to permit any allowance for past over-delivery, which means we are obliged to deliver nearly 2,000 more homes than we would have done if they had accepted a discount on the number required in the emerging local plan to reflect over-delivery in the existing one.

Undeterred, we will press on with our determination to bring the new local plan to completion as soon as possible. We are striving to improve on the draft new local plan that we inherited from the previous Conservative administration. We are working on bold new environmental standards for new buildings, to make them more energy efficient and therefore cheaper to live in, and we are designating significant areas of the borough as of ‘landscape value’, which will offer them protection against inappropriate development.

We are also seeking to increase the proportion of genuinely affordable housing in the overall housing stock, by stipulating a higher percentage of discounted market, shared ownership and social rental housing in new market housing schemes.

024 is the year to put behind us the Covid lockdowns and the soaring energy prices that followed from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The government’s main task is to complete the job of getting inflation down. With tax cuts to assist we can help people earn more and keep more of what they earn so we can enjoy rising living standards. I have been leading the arguments to promote growth and advance prosperity, as set out on my website www.johnredwood.com.

I look forward to seeing the benefits of the additional money for new schools and school places in Wokingham, to increase choice, offer better special educational provision and underwrite the good standards our schools achieve.

I was pleased with like-minded MPs to secure the promise from the Secretary

of State for Levelling Up that in future Wokingham will not face top down targets requiring more houses to be built.

We have experienced a great deal of new building which imposes stresses on residents and our local infrastructure. It is crucial that the council now sets out a new local plan with sensible targets for development, to protect our green spaces and landscapes. This is the way to give us better ways of resisting the grant of more development in unsuitable places on appeal.

I want to see Wokingham Borough Council take more pride in place. They should do a better job maintaining hedgerows, cleaning gutters and unblocking drains, removing litter, providing plenty of litter bins and keeping weeds and briar away from pavements and paths. We need a weekly good quality

After a welcome break over Christmas, I have returned to my task of leading Wokingham Borough Council through one of the toughest periods in its history.

All around us councils of all political persuasions are experiencing unprecedented financial pressure, as they try to navigate their way through stormy waters created by inflation and growth in demand for services at a time when central government is doing little to help. The Local Government Association reckons that about a fifth of councils could effectively go bankrupt in the coming year. When that happens, the government sends in commissioners to run the council. To bring the council’s finances back into balance, commissioners usually inflict deep cuts in services (even removing all non-statutory provision) and raise the council tax to around double the rate of the government’s cap.

We are determined that Wokingham will not suffer this fate. We are working hard to produce a balanced budget next month, and are confident that we will do so. Our confidence is based partly on the willingness of the current administration to take tough decisions in the public interest; we have taken the view that getting the council’s finances in good order is vital if we are to do anything else. A big factor in our favour is that our experienced chief finance has accumulated various reserves to guard against risk in various council projects, and as that risk diminishes, we are able to release some of these reserves to enable us to weather the current storm.

Wokingham is a great place to live in. Our businesses create many good jobs, we are well served by so many people and there is a good choice of housing for those who can afford it. We need to do more to help young people get on the property ladder, and more to help those who would like a ,job gain the skills and the opportunities they need. This year should be a good year, a year of recovery from past shocks to the international system. I wish you and yours every happiness and success for 2024.

We will begin work on our first council-owned solar farm; start planting the new Covid Memorial Wood; prepare the ground for two new special educational needs schools in the borough; negotiate with academy trusts to ensure that there are places for all local children in the borough’s schools; and develop partnership working with the charitable and voluntary sector, businesses, educators, health providers, the emergency services, town and parish councils, the Youth Council, and the other Berkshire unitary councils. On top of all this, we will bring to completion the community vision, a jontly-authored document, drawn up in association with our partners, and the public, which will set the course for the council in the years to come.

Local councils can play a positive role in the life of the community. In everything we do, we will do our best to serve the people of Wokingham and strive to make the borough a better place to live and work.

‘Gritting’ her teeth and breaking down gender stereotypes

olkerHighways is celebrating after Becky Barnes, Customer Service Officer, achieved her HGV license – VolkerHighways’ first female HGV driver. My Wokingham’s Jacky Hayler recently caught up with Becky, who works on the Wokingham highway term maintenance contract, as she shares some insight into her extra responsibilities and what this new qualification means to her.

When did you join VolkerHighways and what are your responsibilities as a Customer Service Officer?

I started my career with the business after being transferred across from another main contractor in April 2019, as an office administrator. In 2021, I became a Customer Service Officer. My duties include managing customer enquiries through a digital platform, working closely with the operations team in dealing with two-hour emergency callouts and assisting with the highway safety inspections, in which I have Lantra Highways Safety Inspection City and Guilds qualification. I also deal with the public face to face, to manage their expectations and listen to their concerns relating to the safety of the highway.

In addition, I design repairs to ensure that the network is safe for longer periods of time, rather than just temporary repairs. I also undertake network stewardship for our client, where I report issues and the condition of their assets such as street lighting, across the highway.

Please tell us about your new role as an HGV driver…

While my role as a Customer Service Officer hasn’t changed, my qualification and training in HGV driving means I will be an integral part of our client’s winter services, including gritting and snow clearance.

Why did you decide to take on this additional responsibility?

Operations has always fascinated me, especially because on the Wokingham highway term maintenance contract, the winter service takes priority over anything else. In my role as a Customer Service Officer, the resident’s safety is a key priority of mine, and I see this new role as an extension to this. I will be ensuring Wokingham residents are safe by making sure the network is free from snow, ice, or frost hazards.

How did you find the training?

My experience of the training programme was quite positive. Initially, I found the theory aspects to be the most challenging part of the training process.

However, as I progressed and had the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios, I noticed a significant improvement in my understanding and overall performance.

The hands-on experience helped me bridge the gap between theory and practice, making the learning process more intuitive and enjoyable.

What support did VolkerHighways give you?

VolkerHighways provided me with valuable support throughout my training journey. Their support was instrumental in enabling me to focus on both

the theory aspects of the training and the practical aspects related to driving.

This support included allowing me the time and resources to study the theory aspects. They were accommodating in providing the necessary materials and access to training resources.

Why should other women consider becoming HGV drivers?

Becoming an HGV driver is not just a viable option for women; it’s an opportunity to challenge stereotypes and contribute to a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Women can excel in this field just as much as men. So, to any woman considering it, the answer is a resounding “Yes, you should and can!” I’m really proud to say that I am the first female winter gritter driver at VolkerHighways!

Fly-tipper includes vehicle registration plates!

S

uspected fly-tipping is under investigation in Park Lane, Finchampstead, as part of a wider crackdown by Wokingham Borough Council. Images depict dumped rubbish, including a pair of registration plates with index W004 VLB. The council has marked the site with stickers, signalling an ongoing investigation.

Fly-tipping is a criminal offence, falling under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.

Penalties can reach £50,000 in magistrates’ courts and are unlimited in higher courts, accompanied by up to five years of imprisonment. The Environment Agency collaborates with local authorities to investigate and prosecute offenders on public land.

Householders face a £400 fine or prosecution if traced waste is flytipped. Failure to comply can lead to a £50,000 fine in magistrates’ courts or an unlimited fine in crown courts.

Responsibility for proper waste removal rests with householders, busi-

nesses, and landowners, including waste handled by contractors. Offences related to fly-tipping, such as permitting or causing it, are subject to investigation and prosecution. Vehicle controllers, often registered keepers,

may be prosecuted even if only the vehicle, not the driver, is identifiable.

Wokingham Borough Council’s enforcement officers inspect premises for compliance with Commercial Waste Contracts and Duty of Care

Agreements. Not having valid documentation for commercial waste incurs a £300 fixed penalty.

Tribute to John McCardle: A family man and master Stone Mason

A

family man who was described as ‘the foundation of his family’ has been remembered following his passing before Christmas.

Born in South Ayrshire, Scotland and moving down south at the age of five, John McCardle was well known in the Finchampstead area having lived there for more than 40 years.

Becoming a master stone mason, he was described as a real gentleman at his funeral and the kind of man whose glass was always half full.

He met his wife at the age of 20 in Henley and they were married at Caversham Church in 1983. They had two sons, Adam and Paul who he was so proud of, and he was a familiar sight in the village driving his Landrover caked in mud and wearing his flat cap.

The Mallet, Chisel, dummy, scriber and cox comb are just some of the 100+ tools which go to make up the kit of a stone mason. John was one of those few people to take up the trade.

Back in the 1970s he saw an advert in the local paper and started on a four-year apprenticeship to learn this trade at AF Jones in Reading where he worked for several years.

John then decided to venture out on his own and built up a successful business which he ran for more than 40 years. In the 1980s he decided to take on his own apprentice, Steven Rumble of Tilehurst, who was trained under John’s watchful eye to become a fully qualified stone mason too and they worked together for nearly 20 years.

In the early years John concentrated on restoration projects. He worked on many of his local churches of Finchampstead, Barkham, Arborfield and further afield too.

At Highclere Castle he carried out hand-carvings and mouldings to the new pinnacles that he replaced. At the BBC in Caversham he replaced many of the old crumbling balustrades. At All Saints Church, Wokingham, he rebuilt the gable end of the church, hand carved new copings and made the new cross all with the help of Steven. Other projects includ-

ed Royal Berkshire Hospital, Wellington College and Heckfield House.

During his memorial, his son spoke about how he had a head for heights, taking down and rebuilding a church steeple, working in all weathers.

Opting for what was quite an unusual career, it utilised a unique set of skills including imagination, creativity, physical strength and patience.

“He was always chiselling and grinding to make masterpieces, emerging from his workshop in clouds of dust.”

John also specialised in bespoke stone fireplaces that were hand-

carved with intricate fine detailing to his customers’ requirements. But it was his later years where most people will probably remember him.

He was always there to help bereaved families make the difficult decision regarding a memorial for their loved one. It was John’s empathy, compassion, patience and understanding that gave him his reputation throughout his local community and beyond.

shooting before joining the Royal Berkshire Shooting School as a parttime instructor for many years.

He loved reading, cooking, and travelling, taking inspiration from his travels to experiment in the kitchen. The couple ventured to many countries including Alaska, the Caribbean and Egypt – a destination that proved to be heaven for a stone mason as well as seeing Tutankhamun’s tomb. But it was South Africa that stole his heart.

He will be forever in his family’s memories and sadly missed by so many, but his lifetime’s work will continue to live on for generations to appreciate in the future.

I

t’s a new year. Christmas seems a long time ago and we are all back to our normal, busy lives.

In 2024 we will certainly face challenges and but there will be opportunities too.

Sadly, conflict continues in Ukraine and Gaza, with tragic consequences for many innocent civilians.

War has impacted the global economy, but inflation continues to fall. It is now 3.9%, having come down from its peak above 10% last year.

The Government recently announced Wokingham Borough’s core spending power is going up by 7%, more than the average for England and more than any other council in Berkshire.

Core spending power includes a number of Government grants, retained business rates and Council tax.

Within this our Social Care Grant will increase by nearly 17% to £6.3 million.

Unusually for Wokingham, this May the whole Council will be up for election in one go on new ward boundaries.

Conservative councillors are working hard to show that we’re ready to form the next administration – one that listens to you, manages the Council responsibly and delivers your priorities.

2024 will probably also be a General Election year. Boundary changes mean constituencies will be different going forward and I’m standing as the Parliamentary candidate in the new

seat of Earley and Woodley as the Conservative candidate. I’ve been enjoying speaking with residents, and I will continue to work hard to meet as many as possible across the whole constituency in the coming weeks and months.

I’ll continue to hold the Liberal Democrat Council to account: fighting for better value for money for taxpayers, campaign for a crossing on Shinfield Road following an accident involving a child last year, and working with the Police and Crime Commissioner to make sure the police support shopkeepers and tackle shoplifting.

Every new year is an unknown, but I hope that 2024 brings health and happiness to you.

We are living in a very unsettled world with conflict in Ukraine, Gaza and Yemen. These conflicts will remain difficult to resolve and I’m sure that my Liberal Democrat colleagues in Westminster will have resolving these conflicts as a high priority.

2024 is almost certain to be a General Election year and many people that I speak to from Remenham and Wargrave to Wokingham Without and

Finchampstead and everywhere in between are telling me that our country needs a change of direction.

Lifelong Conservatives say to me they cannot support the Conservatives again and Labour supporters are telling me they will support the Lib Dems because we are the best opportunity for change and hope here in Wokingham.

We need to fix our national health service which continues to struggle due to a chronic lack of funding from

new year is always a time for hope and optimism that this year will be a good one for all- valuing good health, friendship, successfully achieving our goals.

For many this is also a time of great concern- another year to face.

Councillors have put themselves forward and been elected to be the signposts for support for residents. We are here if you need advice, support or even just someone to air your concerns with.

I promised this administration would take the Council to the residents, to consult with them and listen to them.

I have started 2024 by attending organised sessions to give residents the opportunity to discuss the Bracknell Forest Budget as part of the budget consultation process; explaining what decisions are proposed and why. This is the first time this has every happened and the reception has been very posi-

tive. Even after the budget consultation ends, similar opportunities will be organised as they are obviously valued.

I have lived in Bracknell Forest for over 50 years and really love living here.

Each area has very strong communities and we need to encourage all to get involved and help make our borough an even better place to live. With the shortage of funds, some areas will need attention from local groups to ensure that any litter gets collected, fly tipping is reported, or better stopped, potholes are reported. If we all do our bit, it will make such a difference.

Whilst inflation and interest rates may

be easing slightly, the economy still has many risks and hardly any costs will go down. Those who need to renew a mortgage may still see increases in interest payments of £500 a month or more. The government is ending some of the support it has been giving, even though the pressures are continuing.

I will be spending much of my time in 2024 talking with local people on the doorstep. I want to hear from you, your hopes and fears and what you want from the next MP in Wokingham and the next government. I look forward to talking with as many of you as possible.

With My Wokingham selected as media partner for the David Cliff Wokingham Half Marathon, we focus on some of the stories of those taking part in this year’s event.

Sharon’s journey to a marathon runner

haron Webster started running (again) in September and the Wokingham Half Marathon is helping with her training for the London Marathon.

Sharon, aged 40, said: “I’ve run a few 10k races over the years but never really fell in love with the sport.

However, this time I have a clear goal run the marathon to finish the London Classics within 12 months.

“I’m excited to run the Wokingham half, it’ll be my first half marathon and a huge milestone in my journey to becoming a marathon runner.”

Sharon has had type one diabetes for over 30 years and likes to take on a sporting challenge to show diabetes

doesn’t have to stop you. As well as raising funds and awareness for Diabetes UK, it is also a way of keeping herself fit and healthy.

Married with two children, aged nine and seven, her family are an integral part of her training regime. “They’re very proud of my efforts and are helping me fundraise. They’ve also taken part in some races and triathlons and are hoping to take part in the Wokingham Mini Mile.”

Before having children, Sharon tried to get into running and took part in a couple of 10k events, but she struggled to love it and sustained a couple of injuries. Now though, she appears to have been bitten by the running bug.

“I run locally, and take my shoes on holidays to train wherever I am. I used Garmin Coach to start with and have now moved to Coopah for their full marathon training plan. I’d love to join a running club, but it’s taken me a little while to get to a pace where I’d feel comfortable joining.

Sharon, from Mortimer, is a UX consultant, helping companies improve their digital products and services by carrying out research and designing solutions.

She is looking forward to the atmosphere of the half marathon, and to achieving her goals. “The most challenging parts for me are fundraising and managing my diabetes. It’s been a steep learning curve as running affects

my control differently to other sports, but I’m getting there.

“Exercise helps me stay healthy, especially with my diabetes, so that’s a big motivator. Fundraising for Diabetes UK is also really important to me. I’ve raised money for them and JDRF (the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) over the years so they can continue their great work in improving treatments, campaigning for awareness, and researching for a cure to this lifelong condition.”

Sharon’s aim is to raise £2,100 and she’s currently about halfway there thanks to generous donations and selling her crafts made from recycled bike parts.

Runner hopes half marathon will be a family affair

athryn Le Coz lives in Charvil and is an accounting director for Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) in London. She is hoping the David Cliff Wokingham Half Marathon will be a real family affair.

She grew up and went to school in her hometown of Ballymena, Northern Ireland. This year is 30 years since she left school and she has a reunion at Easter so she is going back home for that where she will also do some fundraising and training with her relay team for the Belfast City Marathon two weeks after London She has two boys William (almost 13) and Patrick (11). William is in Year 8 at the Piggott School and Patrick is Year 6 at Charvil Piggott primary. They both play hockey with Reading, football for Twyford Comets, AFC Charvil and play trumpet with Berkshire Maestros and violin respectively.

Kathryn said: “We regularly do local park runs together and they have been to support me at previous races including my first half back in 2018 at the London Landmarks Half Marathon.

My husband Yann is also running Wokingham Half and will also do his first full marathon at Belfast City. I hope to sign the boys up for the mini mile if we can work out the logistics as we are running the half marathon at the same time. It would be lovely to have all of us running that day if we can make it work. They are also helping with fundraising selling their toys at a nearly new sale this month.”

Kathryn runs to help with her physical and mental wellbeing as well as weight management, but she says when she fundraises for certain races there is a huge emotional element too.

“For my first half marathon I raised

almost £4k for Kidney Research UK. My mum had polycystic kidney but died of bowel cancer before she could get a transplant. I donated a kidney to my brother who also has the disease, and my other brother got a kidney donor. This fundraising/race campaign will lead up to the 40th anniversary of my mum’s death so it will be another emotional one!”

Kathryn, aged 47, is not a member of a running club as she finds it hard to fit in with commuting to London and her children’s activities. She is also involved with a number of choirs.

“I am a member of the Twyford Singers and PwC Choir and have just finished a very busy Christmas season including carol services and I arranged and sung/played piano for a number of carol-singing sessions in local old people’s homes around Twyford and Wargrave.”

Kathryn uses the Nike run club app which features a marathon plan which has guided audio runs with her chosen routes taking her all around the area locally including Charvil, Wargrave, Twyford, Woodley, Hurst and Reading.

“I will also be training on some of the roads that are part of the Wokingham Half course.”

She also belongs to the David Lloyd gym at Thames Valley Park and takes part in other cross training activities like swimming, weights and pilates classes there.

“My training is a mix of one long run and one speed run once a week and as many recovery runs as I can fit in as well as a weekly park run.”

As well as trying to improve her park run times and reaching her target of 50 park runs (she is currently on number 44), this will be her seventh half and

her first full marathon in London on 21st April with a team relay at Belfast City Marathon two weeks after that. “I used to be a keen hockey player, but an anterior cruciate ligament rupture ended that. I did have a reconstruction in 2002 and it was physio/recovery from that that got me into running.”

Her current fundraising target is £2,000 for Hospice UK (including £500 matched funding from PwC). Anything over that is going to be split 50/50 with Cancer Research UK. Hospice UK champions and supports over 200 UK hospices to care for 200,000 adults, children and babies with life-limiting and terminal illnesses every year, as well as supporting their families with emotional and bereavement support. They believe that everyone should receive the best end of life care. Your support boosted by the PwC Foundation with up to £500

matched funding will help Hospice UK provide expert information, advice and support when people need it most.

And what time is she aiming for?

“My best half marathon time is two hours six minutes, but I have had a lot of injuries recently and don’t want to get injured ahead of the London Marathon, so I am aiming for a safer sub two hours 30!

Fitness, weight loss, mental wellbeing and fundraising are all key aspects of why I am doing it as well as having fun - Wokingham sounds like a fantastic race!”

She will be running with her husband and another friend who are both also doing marathons this year (London and Belfast) so hope to bring along lots of local support from Charvil and the surrounding area.

Wokingham aerobathon in aid of MND

N

early 100 women had a joyful aerobic New Year celebration in Wokingham, all while raising funds to support families affected by Motor Neurone Disease. The successful two-hour charity aerobathon took place at the FBC Centre on Saturday (January 13th), benefiting the MND Association’s Reading and West Berkshire Branch.

The organiser, Melissa Buckle of SimplyFit, shared at the event’s conclusion that an impressive £1,700 had been raised, with some collection buckets yet to be counted. Linda Green, a charity volunteer who participated, expressed her gratitude, saying, “What a great day! This was so much fun and enjoyed by all. Huge thanks to everyone who attended.”

Melissa selected the Association as the beneficiary due to the support SimplyFit members had received from the local branch over the years.

Friends Jacqui Warbey from Woodley and Julie Young happily completed the aerobic challenge, fueled by uplifting music. Their thoughts were with Jacqui’s late husband Richard, who succumbed to MND at the age of 56 in 2017, and their friend Deborah, who, after doing Zumba together, is now living with MND. Jane Gilbert, spokesperson for the Association’s Reading and West Berkshire branch, expressed gratitude, stating, “We are very thankful to Melissa for organising this amazing fundraiser and to all the ladies who made it so much fun. Their generous donations will significantly contribute to improving the quality of life for local families affected by MND and advancing

research toward finding a treatment and eventual cure.”

Centuries-old oak at churchyard gets major pruning

A

majestic oak tree that has stood

by St Paul’s Church for over 300 years recently underwent significant pruning after a large branch fell a few months ago. The operation, expected to cost around £17,000, was made possible with nearly half the funds raised through donations and grants.

The trimming began on December 27th, reducing the oak tree to a 4m monolith. Reading Road was tempo-

rarily closed from Station Approach to Holt Lane to facilitate the operation. A large crane delicately lowered branches, while a ground crew processed smaller branches through a chipper and cut the rest into suitable lengths, depositing them in a skip.

A team member climbed the tree, attached chains to the crane, and cut off the branches. Despite ‘Road Ahead Closed’ signs, some cars ended up at Holt Lane

but, by the end of the first day, most of the large limbs had been trimmed.

After completing the work on the second day, the oak tree now stands in a safe condition, though a bit more of it remains than originally planned. The church’s view has changed, and signs of new growth are visible on the remaining stumps. Notably, a small holly bush has rooted itself on the remains of a limb on the east side.

Lexicon and college join forces for Mannequin project

racknell and Wokingham College and The Lexicon are excited to announce that they are working together on an amazing project entitled ‘Mannequins Upcycled’.

‘Mannequins Upcycled’ began when The Lexicon, as part of its focus on sustainability, gifted 12 mannequins to the college on Church Road, which would have otherwise gone to landfill.

Following an ideas session, students studying the Creative Practice: Art, Design and Communication Level 3 Extended Diploma at the college worked in groups to come up with and create a design for two of the mannequins, based on the month of the year that each mannequin has been selected as.

The students aim to incorporate upcycled donated materials, clothing and fabric into their finished designs.

This valuable work experience opportunity teaches the students what it is like to work with a client and to a brief. As part of the design process, each group presented their initial designs to Sue Boor, Head of Marketing at The Lexicon.

Once complete, the mannequins will feature in an exhibition in The Lexicon, from 8th to 19th February. As part of the exhibition, attendees will be able to vote for their favourite design. The winning group will receive a prize.

Keira Wheeler, Jasmine Elgohary, Katie Rivington and Paige Simpson are all studying a Creative Practice: Art Design and Communication Level 3 Extended Diploma at Bracknell and

Wokingham College, and they’ve been working on designs for the March and April mannequins.

The mannequin for March will wear a green dress trimmed with origami flowers around the hem of the skirt and on the shoulders. The students will also decorate the mannequin’s legs with leaves. The mannequin for April is an androgenous design, where the mannequin wears a pair of jeans, which the students plan to appliqué with flower and leaf designs and embellish with beads. The students also plan to paint the mannequin’s torso with a vine and flower bud design.

Keira said: “The designs for the mannequins for March and April are both flowery, as they both represent Spring.

We’re still deciding whether to make or buy the dress for March, which is a bit

frightening as I haven’t made a dress before, but it will be fun too.

“It’s much easier to work with other people on the designs as it makes it more fun, reduces stress, solves problems and merges ideas. We will be able to include this in our portfolios to use in job or apprenticeship applications and interviews.”

Sue Dew-Gosling, Creative Arts Lecturer at Activate Learning, said: “Students working on live projects for the community with real clients is an invaluable example of work experience and any future career or further study opportunities. It also boosts their confidence and helps them to develop professional skills, which will benefit them in the future.

Lifetime achievement award for cycle trainer who went that extra mile

A

much-loved instructor who revolutionised cycle training in Wokingham Borough and taught thousands of local children to ride has been honoured by a national charity.

Jill Bissell, who retired from the council’s My Journey Wokingham team last August after 15 years’ service, has won the Lifetime Achievement title in the latest Celebration of Bikeability awards.

The Bikeability Trust, which still enjoys a close and long-standing relationship with the council thanks to her efforts, will present her with a plaque in the New Year.

Jill, who lives locally with her husband and recently became a grandmother, said she was shocked but thrilled to have won and proud to have helped so many young residents to ride safely.

Changing our teaching for the better Jill and her family moved to the area from Kent in 1989 and she became a volunteer cycle trainer at Oaklands Junior School in Crowthorne, which their two children attended, in 1997.

She initially taught pupils to pass the Cycling Proficiency Test, which Bikeability would eventually replace, before working casually as a test examiner.

Jill, a former Jobcentre manager and keen cyclist, trained as a Bikeability instructor in 2005 and wanted to get the council involved after joining its road safety team in 2008. Back then, schools could only teach cycling proficiency if parents volunteered, which meant less affluent areas lost out and Jill felt every child deserved the opportunity.

Leading the way in cycle training Jill said: “In 2010, the Department for Transport introduced grants for schoolchildren to be taught by paid Bikeability instructors - so we absolutely went for it as we knew we could get the funding. Our schools were great at taking it up when we offered it and we’ve been pleased at how popular it’s been ever since.”

Thanks to Jill’s early successes, the council was among just seven local authorities that were asked to pilot the enhanced Bikeability Plus scheme in 2016 and present the findings at a national conference.

This involved offering extra activities and was funded by a large grant, allowing the council to buy its first ever balance bikes, helmets and more. A year later, Jill was named 16th on Cycling UK’s list of the 100 most inspirational women in cycling.

“The council are working hard to make school routes safer and I hope in future we’ll see more children walking and cycling. It’s healthy and a valuable learning experience compared to being driven and it helps them become more independent.”

Every child can learn to ride “The Bikeability Plus trial took over my life for a year,” said Jill, “but it was absolutely worth it and we were so pleased with how we performed – it was great to be recognised alongside six much larger councils.”

All primary-aged pupils in Wokingham Borough now have the chance to learn to maintain and control their bikes, as well as riding safely alongside others on the roads, as part of Bikeability.

It is taught in three levels, starting on quiet roads and building up to roads with more traffic and more complex junctions as well as route planning and handling challenging situations.

In 2020, the council was named Bikeability’s Local Authority Partner of the Year with 100 per cent of primary schools offering Bikeability training and 80 per cent of Year 6 children taking part.

A familiar face in our community Jill said: “I was chuffed and honoured just to be nominated for the Lifetime Achievement award by my lovely colleagues and certainly didn’t expect to win as there were so many other nominees. I had a really enjoyable ca-

reer at the council and loved working with both the community and my team.

I particularly liked doing so much work face-to-face rather than in an office.

“I loved teaching children of all ages and still have young people coming up to me in the street and saying ‘you taught me to ride’. My colleagues were amazed that I remembered all their names.Learning to ride is such an important life skill, not just in terms of controlling a bike but also understanding the rules of the road and how to keep yourself safe.”

Tackling the bigger issues My Journey Wokingham’s work is part of the council’s efforts to encourage walking, cycling and taking public transport, in turn helping its wider goals of tackling the climate emergency, improving air quality and helping people to be physically and mentally healthier.

It also offers Learn to Ride children’s sessions and runs a weekly balance bike club for two- to four-year-olds, as well as supporting events like the annual Wokingham Bikeathon and organising an annual Summer Bike Bonanza.

A well-earned but active retirement Jill continues to serve as a Champion for British Cycling’s Breeze women’s riding scheme and has helped many local women into the sport since 2015.

A few weeks ago, she celebrated her 200th ride with an extra-long trip to Windsor Great Park and back via Ascot. She has completed several more Breeze rides since then.

Positive growth in UK housing market: Increased buyer demand sets an optimistic tone

n the early days of January, the UK housing market witnessed a notable surge, with the number of buyers experiencing a remarkable 14 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. This surge has contributed to a palpable boost in overall market activity, signalling positive momentum.

Encouragingly, the latest data from Zoopla reveals that buyer demand in 2024 is tracking an impressive 14 per cent ahead of early 2023. Additionally, the number of new sales agreed has risen by a substantial 16 per cent in comparison to the first week of 2023.

Vendor leads have also shown a remarkable uptick, soaring by 128 per cent since Christmas Eve and maintaining a significant 175 per cent increase two weeks after Zoopla's major marketing campaign launch on Christmas Day. Notably, over 11,500 properties were listed on Zoopla on 26th December, reflecting heightened market interest.

This positive trend is expected to persist into the Spring, buoyed by ongoing improvements in mortgage rates, which continue to attract new buyers into the market, according to insights from the property portal.

Tim Bannister, a property expert from Rightmove, acknowledges the upbeat market activity, stating, "It’s likely to be another muted year for the market; however, the better-than-anticipated activity this year has shown that many buyers are still getting on with satisfying their housing needs." Bannister predicts a modest average 1 per cent fall in new seller asking prices in 2024

Key Facts and Figures Halifax data reveals that the average UK house price is currently £283,615, slightly down from £286,328 a year ago.

Annual house price growth stands at -1.0 per cent (year to November), with a variation between +2.1 per cent (January and February) and -4.5 per cent (August and September) in 2023. Despite the fluctuations, average property prices are £44,439 higher than at the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, reflecting an 18.6 per cent increase.

Notably, property prices for homes bought by first-time buyers recorded slight growth (+0.5 per cent) over the last year, while the amount paid by home-movers fell by -1.7 per cent. Northern Ireland saw the highest rate of annual property price inflation at +2.3 per cent, while the South East of England recorded a decrease of -5.7 per cent. The all-time record high UK average property price was set in August 2022 at £293,025, showcasing the resilience and growth of the housing market.

The typical UK house price has increased by +59 per cent over the last decade, rising by £105,114 from £178,501 in November 2013.

Friday fun day

I

f waiting for Christmas was too much to bear, families had something to keep them occupied on the Friday before Christmas.

Shinfield Parish Council invited residents to join their Friday Fun Day at Shinfield Green Centre on December 22nd. There was a pop-up soft play and other activities available for free though voluntary contributions were

welcome. And they held another session on Friday 29th December.

The event was supported by Artist’s Harvest, a Wokingham based company offering soft play and bouncy castle hire, face painting and much more.

Carers and parents needed to supervise children at all times but the activites available were great fun for all concerned.

Dance school has a trio of reasons to celebrate

A

Wokingham dance school as a triple reason to celebrate this New Year – one of their student’s has just finished performing in the West End and they have been nominated for four awards. Not only that but their principal is also getting married later this year!

Oliver Benson, aged nine, from Lower Early trains at the prestigious Steppin Out Stars of tomorrow theatre school for children In Wokingham.

Back in October Oliver was lucky enough to be selected to play the little boy in the West End production of The Snowman. He went through a vigorous audition process and the role was shared with two other boys.

The production was sold out and resided at the Peacock Theatre in the West End for two months running up to December 29th.

Oliver said: “Being in the show was an amazing experience. The cast and crew were so friendly. My favourite part was learning to fly! And one of my highlights was when all my friends from Steppin Out came on my final performance.”

MumLouise said: “It has been incredible watching our son in the West End. None of this would have been possible without the five years of training he has had at Steppin Out. The variety of performances he has had at the school during this period has been invaluable and certainly helped him develop his confidence to perform on a big stage!”

Oliver is now busy auditioning for his next big role but it has to be kept a secret for now! So watch this space.

Shelley Otway, Steppin Out’s CEO and Principal said: “Oliver deserves all

the success he has. He is extremely hard working and dedicated and has a natural talent. I cried my eyes out

watching him in The Snowman. It is such a lovely show anyway but seeing one of our students up there on that huge stage and playing such a big part was incredibly emotional! I was so very proud!”

Shelley has run her incredibly successful theatre school for children Steppin Out Stars of Tomorrow in Wokingham for 15 years and Woodley for 14 years. She worked professionally as a singer, dancer and actress before setting up her school at Emmbrook in Wokingham and Bulmershe in Woodley back in 2009.

“I cannot believe we will be celebrating 15years of running classes in the area this year,” she said. “There isn’t much we have not come across - venues flooding, having to use the zoom platform for over 60 classes a week during Covid, children being sick and having to train others at short notice for shows. This just scratches the service of just some of the challenges I have faced!

“I love my job she says, it’s my passion so I never feel like I am going to work. My dad always said do something you love and you will never work a day In your life and I so feel like that.

Back in February 2023 Shelley met a business coach at a networking event.

Since then she saysshe has never looked back.

The coach, Sarah Grimsdick from My Profit Team, put Shelley up for several awards. She believed in her and said her business should be celebrated. “Shelley is a dream client. She is passionate about her business and is open to new ideas. When Shelley puts her mind tosomething she gets it done

and some! I am delighted for her that her hard work and dedication have been recognised.”

Shelley went on to win Best Businesswoman working with children and families in 2023 at The Best Businesswoman awards in London’s West End and Theatre School of the year 2023/24 at The Prestige Awards.

“Collecting the award at The Hilton in London was incredible and so exciting.

Being up on stage with so many other successful businesses was so rewarding and I never for one second thought we would win!”

Shelley has done it again and this time has been shortlisted for not one but four awards at The Thames Valley Business awards 2024 at The Hilton in Reading on 25th Januarypresented by Sports Olympian Fatima Whitbread.

The categories Shelley has been nominated for are Best Business, Best Business leader, Best Female Entrepreneur and The Lifetime Achievement award (The latter only being open to businesses who have run for 10 years or more!”

Shelley said “It is so amazing to celebrate not just the success of the school but it’s lovely for my students as well. I also ensure they all get a treat as well!”

Shelley lives in Shinfield with her fiancé Rob and her daughter Aiyana.

Rob and Shelley are due to get married in May this year! “2024 has a lot to be celebrated,” she laughed!

Jobs for January

Pruning and maintenance Fruit trees January is an excellent time to prune apple and pear trees. Remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches to encourage healthy growth and better fruit production in the coming year.

Residents dress to impress to see in the New Year in style

here were plenty of options for residents in Wokingham and Bracknell to see in the New

Year.

Arborfield British Legion held their usual annual gathering with this year’s theme being a masquerade ball.

The event was well attended with tickets sold in advance. They had a live singer for the entertainment, Adam Toomey who is well known on the Wokingham entertainment scene. He performed a selection of classic covers including big band and swing songs. And there was a light buffet which was so plentiful there was some left over for the next day.

Club chairman Kevin Brooker said: “The evening was a huge success. It was very impressive how everyone made an effort. There were some very good costumes with a nice selection of masks. It really elevated the evening to something special.”

The event, which was open to the entire community, saw families joining together to see in the New Year with a sparkling toast provided at midnight.

The Broad Street Tavern held a New Year’s Eve party with Release Radio DJ Clint Tee with guests encouraged to dress to impress.

The Bier Keller at Coppid Beech Hotel also held a party.

And Chalk in Wokingham welcomed the new year in style with an evening inspired by the iconic British secret agent James Bond 007. Their ‘No Time to Dine’ party took over the entire restaurant and offered an action-packed night with a line-up of live entertainment from dancers and musicians to Blackjack, Roulette and magicians.

Guests were encouraged to dress to kill with black tie glamour and with martini cocktails on arrival, they were sure to be shaken not stirred!

Local resident shortlisted for two awards

rowthorne resident, Nikita Thakrar has kickstarted the New Year by becoming a finalist for two prestigious awards; the Thames Valley Business and Community Awards and the Southwest Business Awards.

These awards celebrate the achievements and contributions of entrepreneurs and businesses in the region. The competition is fierce, as the quality and quantity of entries has this year been higher than ever with more people becoming self-employed since the pandemic. The winners will be selected by a panel of distinguished judges who will evaluate the finalists based on their nominations and customer reviews.

Nikita, aged 38 has been shortlisted for the 'female entrepreneur of the year' category for both awards. She is the founder and director of two successful businesses: DNC dance and yoga studio in Slough and Journey with Nikita in Crowthorne and online.

She supports people going through challenging periods of changes and transitions, through her holistic approach and compassionate guidance.

She has nurtured a team who combine their skills and passion to support people of all ages improve their physical, mental and emotional well-being. The book is illustrated by her daughter Rhiann, and they are giving a presentation on Moon’s story using puppets, video, and toy farm animals aimed at children aged five to 10 at Bracknell library on Thursday 15th February from 2.30pm to 3.30pm in the I.T room on the lower ground floor.

real Wokingham lady through and through, Winnie Rockett celebrated her 100th birthday last week with family and friends.

Now living at Wild Acres Care Home in Finchampstead, she enjoyed a family buffet and special cake, as well as a visit from Wokingham’s Mayor. She also received her birthday card from King Charles.

Having always been passionate about dance, she tripped the light fantastic as far afield as Scotland, London and even the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool. As a result, staff at Wild Acres arranged for two dance troupes, an adult group and Joanna, an adult group called Miles School of Dancing, a children’s group to visit the home and perform for Winnie on her special day.

Winnie was born in Finchampstead and lived for most of her life in the family home. The youngest of three sisters, she attended the local C of E school before starting her first job at the Waterloo Hotel in Crowthorne at a

time when the hotel also housed penguins as well as guests!

Spokesman for Wild Acres, Cathi Foales picked up the story. “It turned out that Winnie was quite unconventional for the times and not very domesticated, so she didn’t last long at the hotel. She was very gregarious, ahead of her time and learnt to drive at an early age.”

It was while working in the office at the Ford garage in Wokingham, then called Frank Cadby’s, that she met Reg, a mechanic and the man who was to become her husband. Reg was said to worship the ground she walked on and as feisty as ever, she enjoyed describing him as her toyboy as he was two years younger than her.

They married in 1950 and moved into her family home but sadly her parents died in their 50s just six weeks apart.

The couple went on to have two children, Trevor and Marilyn, and were a close family, taking trips to the coast every Sunday for picnics. Winnie worked

at the Thatched Cottage Stores then behind the bar at the Finchampstead Park sports club where Reg was the groundsman. Reg was a keen gardener while Winnie was involved with lots of local clubs including the Mother’s Union and Women’s Institute.

Winnie battled and overcame cancer at the age of 86 and despite his age, it came as a shock when Reg passed away at the age of 93. She stayed in the family home before living with her daughter Marilyn in Finchampstead for six months, prior to moving to Wild Acres. Winnie also has two grandchil-

dren and two great grandchildren.

Cathi added: “She has a cheeky character and loves being the centre of attention. After Reg died her daughter gave her a teddy bear who she is now inseparable from. She whispers to him and he has his own set of clothes.

“She has settled in well here and is part of the Wild Acres family.”

First event of Wokingham Lion’s anniversary year

elebrating their 50th anniversary this year, Wokingham Lions Club have announced that their latest #Woky Quiz will be on Friday 16th February at 7.30pm (doors open 19:00). So, get your team together and book your tickets for a great night of Quizzing!

Changes to elections and voting for 2024 Big changes are being made to the way elections are run. It is important you understand these new rules and are prepared so that you can make your vote count.

In May, there will be all-out borough elections, meaning all 54 seats are up for contention on Wokingham Borough Council. There is also a Police and Crime Commissioner election for Thames Valley, with the possibility of parish council elections if there are any contested seats.

The date of the next general election has not yet been announced. It must be held by 28th January 2025, but it could be called sooner. Don’t delay, ensure you are registered to vote and read the information on your poll card carefully when it arrives.

With all of these elections on the horizon, the borough council is keen to help you navigate the changes that have been brought in as a result of the Elections Act 2022. If you want to have your say at elections happening in May and at the next general election, you need to be aware of these changes and how they impact you. We’d urge you to prepare now and not to leave it to the last minute.

What can you be thinking about or prepare for now?

Photo ID Some of the effects of this legislation have already been felt, with 2023 being the first time voters were required to bring photographic ID with them to vote at a polling station. This will continue to be the case for all future elections.

Not everyone will need to apply for this, as they will already have an accepted form of ID. These include: ∙Passport ∙Full or provisional driving licence ∙Blue badge ∙Certain concessionary travel cards, such as an older person’s bus pass or Oyster 60+ card

∙Identity card with Proof of Age Standards Scheme (Pass) mark ∙Biometric Immigration document ∙Certain national identity cards Expired ID is also accepted, as long as you still resemble a likeness to your photo.

If you do not have suitable ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate online at: www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate Changes to postal and proxy voting These types of voting, also known as absent voting, saw changes introduced in October 2023. If you want to vote by post, or have someone you trust to vote on your behalf, the system has changed and you should take action now.

Postal vote applications will now be valid for three years – previously five years – and after this time will have to

be renewed. If you already have one, you don’t need to do anything for the time being.

Electors wishing to vote this way can now apply online through a new central government portal, with both digital and paper applications requiring you to provide proof of identity. You will therefore have to provide a signature, date of birth and national insurance number.

Postal vote applications can be made at: www.gov.uk/apply-postal-voteand proxy vote applications can be made at: www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote.

If you want someone to vote for you, you need to apply. All electors with a permanent proxy vote for all elections in England will need to reapply for their proxy vote by 31 January 2024.

You can ask anyone to act as your proxy, as long as they are registered to vote, and it is for a type of election that are allowed to vote in. Electors who currently vote by proxy will be contacted to request that they reapply.

The sooner you apply, the less likely there is to be a delay for your postal or proxy vote application.

Changes to ward boundaries Significant changes will be in place for Wokingham Borough elections when the polls open in May 2024.

Major changes have been made to the electoral ward boundaries, following a review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE). Details can be found at: www.lgbce.org.uk This means that some residents will be voting in a different ward to the one they last cast their vote in. Read your polling card carefully when it arrives, as it will let you know which polling station you can vote at. Any new polling stations will be confirmed at the end of January. You can find the information

Changes to parliamentary boundaries There are also new parliamentary boundaries to elect Members of Parliament. There are two constituencies in the borough: Wokingham and Earley & Woodley. Out of Africa…

A

few years ago we were lucky enough to be able to go to South Africa. My husband had family living in Fish Hoek in Cape Town and it was a dream to be able to spend a week there with them.

After the flight, which really makes you appreciate how big Africa is, we settled in before going to explore this vibrant city. First stop was Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated.

Mandela spent 27 years in prison, from November 1962 until February 1990. He was on Robben Island for 18 of his 27 years in prison. During this time, he contracted tuberculosis and, as a black political prisoner, received the lowest level of treatment from prison workers. However, while there he was able to earn a Bachelor of Law degree through a University of London correspondence programme.

The tour gave us a fascinating insight into all he went through and will stay with our girls forever, not least because we discovered he was born on July 18th, the same birth date as our eldest daughter.

Next on our must-do list was Table Mountain, a flat-topped sandstone mountain, that graces the cityscape of Cape Town with its imposing presence.

Rising approximately 1,085 metres above sea level, it is a remarkable geological masterpiece formed over millions of years. The mountain’s unique plateau, stretching approximately three km from end to end, is a testament to the forces of nature that have shaped this awe-inspiring landmark.

While some choose to climb the

mountain, we opted to ride the cable car to the top and were rewarded with some stunning views with all of Cape Town laid out before us.

Wildlife is another draw of South Africa with their many national parks and safaris. While we didn’t have time to see the ‘Big Five’, we did manage to tick off some impressive firsts. We went to Cape Point, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Indian Ocean and enjoyed a picnic lunch with the baboons.

Having become used to living alongside man, they have now mastered the baboon-proof litter bins, retrieving leftovers for their lunch while one cheeky baboon even climbed into the driver’s seat of a van left with its door open.

After the heights of Table Mountain and Cape Point, we then went to Boulders Beach, famous for their penguins.

Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is known for the ancient granite boulders that protect it from the wind and large waves. But the soft white sand

and warm waters are not the only reasons why 60,000 visitors go there every year – it’s the local inhabitants – African penguins in their thousands.

Seeing them in their natural habitat was one of the highlights of our trip.

For my husband, another highlight was joining the wine route. We managed to pop in to a number of vineyards including Constantia and Stellenbosch, sampling their wines as well as the goat’s cheese. And he also managed to take in a cricket match at the famous Newlands Cricket Ground, enjoying a match between England and South Africa – a must for sports fans.

The V&A Waterfront is another mustsee as one of Africa’s most visited cultural and historical hubs. Set on the edge of a natural, historic working harbour with the iconic Table Mountain as its backdrop, it offers local and international visitors a cosmopolitan mix of experiences ranging from leisure,

Infamous for apartheid s recently as the 1990s, today it is still recommended not to venture into the city’s township areas. For us, having locals as guides, we rarely felt unsafe. The only indication that the area was not safe was when we had visited some relatives one evening. On our drive back home, we came to a set of traffic lights that were red and we were urged to drive straight through the red light and not stop for fear of being broken into.

Our trip to South Africa was before schools fined parents for taking their children out during term time. Our girls missed a week of school but kept a diary of their trip and reported back to their class on their return. Their teachers said they would learn far more in a week travelling than in the classroom – we all learn far more than we ever dreamed – and made memories that will last a lifetime.

Wedding Fair at South Hill Park Arts Centre

n Sunday, 14th January 2024, South Hill Park Arts Centre in Bracknell hosted a captivating wedding fair from 12 pm to 3 pm. The free-entry event featured around 20 local wedding suppliers, showcasing services from photographers and entertainers to florists and wedding couture.

Live music by Emily Spink, Bryan

Edery, and Je’Zell added to the festive atmosphere. SHP registrars and wedding coordinators provided guided tours, helping couples visualise their dream day.

Situated in a Grade II listed Georgian mansion with Italian gardens, a lake, and elegant rooms, South Hill Park offered a picturesque setting. Couples interested in celebrating their wed-

dings at South Hill Park were invited to contact the Events team.

New Repair Café in Woodley proves popular

T

he first Woodley Repair Café was a great success recently with 35 people bringing their items along for repair and a much-loved teddy bear getting a new lease of life!

The fixers were kept busy with a wide variety of repairs including electrical items, bikes, tool sharpening and toy repairs.

A Repair Café contributes to a sustainable, thriving community, where repair expertise is valued and passed on, where raw materials are used in a responsible way and where people can meet and get to know one another. The aim is to reduce what goes into landfill and help the planet as well as saving you money. Their motto is ‘Don’t bin it, repair it!’.

Mike Buckland said: “My thanks to

Martin for fixing my head torch, to Gavin for advice on a ceramic repair, and to the excellent organisers and helpers.

The service was indeed popular!”

There was also tea, coffee and juice plus biscuits available for sale in the kitchen area just outside the ‘fixers’ room.

The next Repair Café will be on Sunday 4th February between 2pm and 4pm. They will take place the first Sunday on each month at Christ Church in Crockhamwell Road, Woodley.

Wokingham racing driver reflects on an epic season, ending with a championship win

W

okingham racing driver Bobby Trundley has finished 2023 with a championship win, returning to his karting roots.

Bobby, aged 24, who was diagnosed with severe autism as a child, is a driver for Team BRIT, which is the world’s only competitive team of all-disabled racing drivers.

When he was growing up, Bobby attended Westende Primary which he loved, before moving to Maiden Erlegh which was not so great as he suffered bullying because of his autism. It was when he went to a party at Premier Karting in Woodey that he discovered racing. He walked out of the centre at first because of sensory overload from the noise of the go-karts but the manager talked him back in. “They were brilliant,” he said. “I got behind the wheel of a go-kart and loved it then progressed from there,” said Bobby.

He began his love of motorsport in karting at the age of 10, after he found it to have a profound impact on the way he manages the challenges of autism. He was a five-time national karting champion before joining Team BRIT in 2019 and has finished 2023 with a return to his karting roots, winning the Daytona Motorsport Superchamps Championship held at Sandown Park in Surrey.

For the rest of this year, Bobby has driven for Team BRIT in a McLaren 570S GT4, pairing up with his teammate Aaron Morgan, who is a paraplegic following a motocross accident.

Bobby and Aaron’s Mclaren is fitted with the team’s world-leading hand controls which enable Aaron to drive with Bobby and on equal terms with his competitors.

The pair began the season competing in the British GT Championship, before moving over to the inaugural

McLaren Trophy Series Europe, racing at iconic circuits across Europe.

Highlights of Bobby’s year include taking a class win at Nurburgring in Germany, competing at Spa Francorchamps as part of the 24 hour race weekend, which involved taking part in the parade through the town, and putting the pair on pole with a five-second gap when qualifying. He also received the ’driver of the day’ award when driving in the Britcar

Championship in a special six-hour race with other Team BRIT teammates, in which they finished P2 overall and P2 in class.

Next year, Bobby and Aaron will once again be in the McLaren, this time competing in the British Endurance Championship where they will be fighting for an all-out championship win.

Bobby said: “It’s been an incredible year with some amazing highs and some challenging lows. When I look

back at where we’ve been and what we’ve achieved, I just can’t believe it.

Growing up, my autism was always something that made life so difficult, and of course it still can, but it has opened this amazing door for me into a dream I didn’t ever think I’d be able to follow.”

Bobby said his parents have always been very supportive of his love of motorsport. “At first it started as a hobby but it quickly moved up to the next level and they were great.”

Bobby enjoys the travelling that has come with his success having not only been to Germany but Nice and Belgium and is hoping to do pre-season testing in the Algarve in Portugal in February before the start of the new season at the end of March.

“I cannot wait to get back on the track later this year. The off-season is always frustrating as all we want to do is start racing again. Aaron and I are so looking forward to being back racing in the UK for the British Endurance Championship and will be giving it everything for a championship podium.”

Bobby, who also works for BT, still lives I the family home in Easthampstead Road in Wokingham but is also now supported by his girlfriend of seven months, Carys Bailey, who he met through racing.

And he added: “A huge thank you to my friends, family and sponsors for helping me have such a brilliant year.”

Festival of Inclusivity brings community together

S

port Together is about the community and sports clubs working together to increase the opportunity for people who face barriers to participate in physical activity. The group formed due to like-minded clubs in Berkshire understanding how powerful clubs are when working together.

As a group they work together to plan and deliver multi-sport festivals

for people with additional needs across Berkshire. Their Palmer Park Easter event was the first festival the group have run with a second at Cantley Park in Wokingham last October.

The Sport Together group want each of their festivals to be free for all attendees and to be able to offer a range of sporting opportunities which can lead to local pathways to continue involve-

ment. The group are looking for local businesses to come onboard and support the work they do to ensure they can continue to offer these great festivals in the future.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ The next is at the Madejski Training Academy, Boot End, Reading, on Friday 16th February from 10am to 4pm.

Death of John McCardle The funeral service for John McCardle took place at St James Church, Finchampstead on Friday 22nd December 2023.

Having lived in Finchampstead for more than 40 years, John was well known for his work as a stone mason. A true family man, he had a love for shooting, reading, travel and cooking.

He will be forever in his family’s memories and sadly missed by so many, but his lifetime’s work will continue to live on for generations to appreciate in the future.

New beginnings for South Berkshire Hockey in the New Year

he South Berkshire hockey teams kicked off the new year with renewed vigor, resuming action post the festive break. The first week of January featured a busy schedule of five fixtures, followed by a complete programme of matches the subsequent week.

Men’s First Team: A Thrilling Start The Men’s First Team commenced the year with a friendly against Basingstoke, engaging in a seven-goal thriller that ended in a 3-4 loss. Undeterred, they returned to league action against Trojans of Southampton the following week.

Josh Cowell’s goal after 15 minutes secured an early lead, but it wasn’t until the second half that Trojans leveled the score. Despite a hard-fought effort, the match concluded in a 2-2 draw, leaving South Berks in the 10th spot.

Men’s Second Team: Mixed Results The second team faced Marlow and Oxford, suffering a 4-2 loss and then earning a valuable point with a 1-1 draw the next week. The team currently holds the 8th position in their division.

Men’s Third Team: Ups and Downs The Men’s third team experienced mixed fortunes, securing a 3-1 win over Oxford but succumbing to a 2-4 defeat at the hands of league leaders Newbury. They maintain their fourth position in the league.

Men’s Fourth Team: Goal-Scoring Brilliance The Men’s fourth team showcased their goal-scoring prowess with a double-header against Yateley and Berkhamsted. The first match ended 6-5 in favour of Berks, followed by a dominating 6-0 victory. These impressive results propelled Berkshire to the top spot in the league.

Men’s Fifth Team: A Rollercoaster Ride The Men’s fifth team celebrated a 3-1 win over Amersham at home but faced disappointment the following week with a 2-4 loss to Henley. They currently hold the 8th position in their league.

Men’s Sixth Team: Awaiting Resumption The Men’s sixth team is yet to recommence the second half of their league campaign, currently sitting comfortably in 4th place.

Ladies Section: Making Strides In the Ladies section, the First team secured four points from two games, with a 1-1 draw away at Chichester and a narrow 0-1 win away at Banbury.

This performance moved Berkshire up to the 3rd spot in the division.

The Ladies Second Team overcame third-placed Oxford 3-2 at home in the second week, elevating them to the 7th place in their league.

The Ladies Third Team experienced a 1-0 victory at home over Henley but faced a setback with a 2-0 loss away at Wycombe. They currently occupy the 10th position in the league.

The Ladies Fourth Team battled to a 0-0 draw at home against ninth-placed

Harlow, maintaining their top spot by two points in the league.

The Ladies Fifth Team secured a 0-2 away win at Newbury, preserving their top position by two points from Wycombe.

Looking ahead, the Ladies first team is set to face New Forest at home, while the Men’s First Team is gearing up for a clash with Oxford on the upcoming weekend.

Finchampstead Ladies claim victory in football match against Caversham Finchampstead Ladies secured a 2-1 victory against Caversham Ladies in a women's football match. The game took place at Finchampstead ground on a cold Sunday afternoon, with the winter sunshine providing some relief. Finchampstead Ladies, wearing light blue, played a fair but fast game on the semi-hard ground. However, there was an incident where one of the Caversham players pulled down a Finchampstead player.

The final score was 2-1 in favor of Finchampstead Ladies.

Arborfield Women's football team makes a strong comeback in first post-Christmas game

n their first game back after the Christmas break, Arborfield Women’s Football Team showcased resilience, determination, and skill, setting a positive tone for the remainder of the season. “Today’s game was the first game back after the Christmas break.

It was a tough game as the pitch was soft and not much exercise happened over Christmas,” noted Sara Brown, the team’s manager. Despite the challenges posed by a soft pitch and the holiday break’s impact on fitness, the team delivered an impressive performance that left spectators in awe.

Marlow took an early lead, scoring two goals within the first couple of minutes. However, Arborfield quickly regrouped, demonstrating excellent football techniques, creating remarkable passes, and executing crucial saves.

By halftime, Marlow led 4-0, but Arborfield was far from discouraged.

A strategic halftime team talk and a change in formation set the stage for

a remarkable second half. Jess, who transitioned from defense to midfield, scored Arborfield’s first goal, injecting a renewed sense of energy into the

team. Shortly after, Su added a second goal, narrowing the gap. Marlow retaliated with two more goals, but Arborfield’s players of the match, Ash and Jess, continued to shine.

Despite the ultimate 2-6 defeat, Arborfield’s performance in the first game after the Christmas break displayed a commendable comeback spirit. The team’s ability to adapt, make strategic changes, and secure goals in the second half speaks volumes about their commitment to improvement.
